Reviews (page 7 of 8)

I like some of the bands they clearly later inspired, but it's a bit raw and samey for me. 2/5

This one wasn't nearly as bad as I'd expected. I usually hate punk rock, hardcore even more so. But this was at least listenable without skipping more than two or three tracks. That's quite something! I guess it's because the guitars are actually quite good. Not good enough to enjoy the music, but good enough to not hate it. That's something.

2.5/5. Difficult one for me to enjoy. I think if I was in the mood, this would be great, but after listening to it all day - nothing stood out to me. Maybe another day, it will be awesome.

Not my type of music.

It might be an important artifact, but overall just didn’t age well and didn’t connect with me

A little too manic for me, needed a bit more of a hook

I don't think I've ever heard a full track from Black Flag. I was interested in finally hearing something from this band just because they are Black Flag, but after listening I'm confident in why I haven't listened to the band before. The guitars are grinding noise, and the vocals are raspy shouts. I don't know when you would decide to listen to this music. I could skip it.

rise above rise above

At least it was quick.

Loud and obnoxious 2 🌟

No thank you

The more albums I listen to, the more I realize I like what I like already. Old grump I guess.

Not a fan of punk music. It was OK.

Loud and obnoxious 2 🌟

Punk that seemed slightly less aggravating than some others before however it's still a genre and album that I cannot ensure for longer than 10 minutes

Eh. Its super punk or whatever. I was never as enamored with punk as my peers were. Super basic and boring music, wouldnt listen to it again.

eh, not for me

Fast and furious, 15 short metal punk songs in just over half an hour. Making rock achievable again.

I gave this a shot, but I didn’t enjoy it. I don’t think punk is really for me.

It's...I don't know, fine? I don't despise it enough to brand it with a 1 and seemed OK with a few songs. I guess there's a place for it on the list, but just barely. It's in the lower 2's. I'm probably being generous because I like Henry Rollins, maybe more as a screen presence than a singer. The TV Party song that gives SNL a shout out saves it from being a 1.

Was interesting listening to Black Flag (1981) next to The Cure's Pornography (1982). I hear where a lot of bands drew inspiration from these guys, perhaps even The Beastie Boys. Fond of "TV Party" and "Rise Above" otherwise exhausting to listen to the whole album in one sitting. Giving it a 2.5

Don’t like live recordings

Wasn’t a huge fan of this project. When I saw the cover I was prepared for some heavy music, but was taken back by how punk it sounded. Not horrible, but not for me.

Didn’t like punk in the 70s, still don’t ! **

Punk's not really my thing...

tara liked it less than me but i didnt really care. i'd rather listen to it than some of the others.

Ok if you like that kinda thing

When they sent us Guided by Voices a couple of weeks ago I felt the songs were too short – they were catchy but ended just as they got going. These songs are short too, but most can’t end fast enough for me. There’s some humor in TV Party and Six Pack but it’s pretty juvenile.

Just not for me

Best listened to while violently slamming into others in a mosh pit. First few songs are ok but it gets boring fast due to lack of variety

I appreciate hardcore punk but it makes my ears sad

I could not enjoy this album at all. To my ears, it's an album of discordant guitars and whiny Californians screaming about how miserable their lives are. I know that this album is supposed to be one of the best punk albums ever, but I guess I'm not punk enough to understand it.

Not really my kind of music.

Goodness. What noise.

was ok - would fit a skateboarding video soundtrack but wouldn't listen to it normally

Hardcore just isnt my thing.

I’m not young and I’m not angry… this album wasn’t recorded for me!

I listened to part of two songs. Too angry, not for me.

didn’t care for this :/

Noted for being key in the development of Hardcore punk once Henry Rollins became the lead singer. He's quite a good contributor to programmes on punk and the rise of grunge and the visceral nature of the music is undoubted. That's where the positives run out - the music is diabolical and to my ears is not a fusion of the Ramones and Johnny Thunders atonal guitar solos. I hear a recording of a band sounding like a live Iggy Pop bootleg at best. I've heard it now and I hope I die after hearing some better albums.......

Punk is down there with rap

Hardcore punk built from distorted guitars, pounding drums, abrasive vocals, and relentless energy feels like being shoved into a cramped room where everyone is shouting at once and the amplifiers leave no space to breathe. The rawness and aggression are unmistakably, simply too much noise competing for attention, leaving me more overwhelmed than engaged.

Idk man sounded like shit to me

Not one of my favs I actually think I found something I don't really like that much, nothing about this was appealing at all would not recommend

just bad music man, every song is exactly the same and boring, cant understand how this is on the list, saved 0/15

Man, I am just not the right target audience for this. This was a dreadful listening experience for me.

Sounds like the singer is about to puke the whole time. Hate the way that sounds.

Where have I heard "TV Party" before? I wanna say Futurama?? Yup confirmed. That was the only slightly lit spot. Wow this album was unbearable.

no thanks. did-not-finish

Banal, talentless trash. (Unless I’m really missing something…?)

The TV Party they mock so ruthlessly sounds absolutely off the chain compared to anything that I have attended in the past couple of decades...

Tv song is great but other than that I was booed

Punk Rock, 1981 -> 1

I’ve learnt my lesson with hardcore punk, it’s a no from me

This kind of rock is too aggressive for me.

Ahh. Punk rock at its punkiest. I remember “TV Party” was played on Dr Demento back in the 80s, but didn’t know anything else…

never again. noise pollution

It’s a thin line between hardcore punk and heavy metal.

Not my jam.

They're like Rage Against the Machine, if Rage was a high school garage band, Zack hadn't yet had his voice change from puberty, and they sucked.

just sounds like yelling to bizarre sounds.

I am definitely not drunk/angry enough to enjoy this.

Not my cup of tea

Now more than just a reference in the updated Boys of Summer song. Not in a good way

Damaged is definitely the word. Crap.

Demasiado dark, no me gusto

This was horrendous. I did not have to listen to this before I die.

Infantiler Lärm

This was an album of all albums

Don’t know about a black flag. This album is definitely a red flag to keep away from. 1/5 17/3/26

Confirms I am not a hardcore punk fan. A redeeming quality, however, I could understand the lyrics through all the anger, screaming & noise guised as music.

Overall, not a very enjoyable album. I played it in the background, but at some point it just got a bit too much, so I had to move on to something else while I was working. This album made things seem a lot more intense than they really were, so I didn't really have too much fun.

It’s rare I don’t get through an album, but Damaged was one of them. I’m confident the last two songs were not better than the previous mess of yelling, thrashing, and pretending these dorks were doing.

Still not quite my tempo.

Not for me. I like quite a little of punk but this too much hardcore punk for my liking. The only redeeming feature was my minds attempts to convince me they were singing Judy Love in Room 13

I genuinely don’t want to talk about it.

I get that in context, these albums have some sort of importance or reason to listen to, but man, the songs just suck.

This album sounded like the fake punk band a teenager in a movie would be in. Just not good, a lot of noise and angst.

Did not enjoy this. Never been a huge fan of punk, particularly US punk.

A very long 34 minutes, and that run time is probably the most positive thing about the album for me. It's a genre of music i just don't get, and am never likely to try

Bit screamy ain't it? It's an album where you don't get much more on the second, third or subsequent listens than you do from the first. Because it's all short, snappy, shriek-punk. It doesn't have the sophisticated menace of the Dead Kennedys, and rarely their thought-provoking messaging. This focuses instead on screaming about being sad, and not on any form of melody at all. For a couple of the positives, 'TV Party' well reflects the desperate ennui of early 80s life in the US, awash with capitalist entertainment to keep the populace numb. 'Life of Pain' has an intro that feels structured and with octave guitars that hark back to Sabbath. Before conceding to the hardcore chug once again. And that, I find, is the problem with hardcore punk, Circle Jerks and The Germs included. It's makes no lasting impression, and it always seems these albums are made for a good dust-up in the mosh and not to listen to. A short-sharp, amelodic punch, but not enduring. Monotonous, aside from that album cover which is sick (in the Gen Alpha sense).

Ohh my god. Awful. Kind of maybe liked the very last song - Damaged I.

Too Loud™️ 😩😩😩

Could hardly finish. Punk is not ded (unfortunetly)

Punk. 2.3/10

Okay so this sucked.

Niet goed, weeral heavy rock/metal. Alle liedjes leken wat op elkaar

Dit deed pijn

Punkigt och hårt, men inte roligt.

I clearly don't like Punk

Got annoying after the second song. This is like the old people version of soundcloud rap. low effort, edgy and pretty uninteresting. I get that this had a impact on the early skate scene but musically it's worse than other punk music. No one can sing and they barely can play.

Nope. Started ... stopped. A quick listen to a few more, and it's a no from me.

I tried! But it’s not my jam. My brain doesn’t like this yelling hard stuff. I lik Henry Rollins as a person - he’s a smart, interesting guy - but the music just ain’t it. 02-05-2026

OG punk. Grimy and gritty. Great basslines. Lowkey didn’t like any of the songs enough to add them to my playlist. Fav song is ‘Six Pack.’

* new music here, just noise, banging instruments, and screaming vocals.

I like a lot of punk music but not this hardcore punk with lyrics that I don't understand, mindless screaming and trash one-note music. Nope. At least the songs and the whole album is short. Still, a 1 star album.

One of the worst yet! Howling and screaming to boring pounding guitar playing!

Not good. Usually, I can be positive about some element of a US hardcore punk album, even though it's not my thing - maybe the drumming, the energy, an interesting chord progression. But here, it was all just a big load of meh noise. When I realised the same guy was responsible for Circle Jerks, I emitted a hollow laugh, because I hated their album on here as well. I wonder if Black Flag got better after Henry Rollins joined? He's supposed to be cool. Perhaps I'll find out.

big no from me!!!

I never really liked Black Flag. Listening to this it’s not as bad as I remembered but still pretty bad. The production is just awful and Rollins vocals are plain bad. I understand this has a central role in the development of hardcore punk but honestly I don’t really get why. There were other hardcore punk bands which were much better. You don’t have to hear this before you die. One star. Also I have to say this list really over represents punk. I mean I love punk music, it’s great, but there’s not so much of it which is a must. This is particularly glaring considering the severe under representation of metal music. I guess music critics always found punk to be more deeply artistic than metal.

absolutely no, it's just noise

just noise for noise sake

yeah this album made waves for the genre, but the genre sucks. hardcore is bad

My ears are Damaged.

Not my thing, never been sure about Henry Rollins, that was a hard listen tbh

Sem comentários!

This is absolutely not my type of music. I think I have to give it a 1. I did like the TV watching track.

This is a no for me. I don’t like a single song on this album. Granted, I’m also not a rock fan, so this isn’t appeasing to me either. I firmly believe that quite a few of these suggested albums on the 1001 albums list are neither influential to mainstream media nor worth going out of one’s way to listen to them. It feels a bit nichey right now.

Punky, raw, chaotic

Hard core punk. Yuck. 1

Æi, ég er of gamall fyrir þetta. Sit undir þessu í 34 mínútur og skelli ás á þetta með góðri samvisku.

Not for me. Some great riffs and music spoilt by vocals that just seemed unnecessarily aggressive in an unpleasant way.

Look, for punk rock to work there has to be some rock to go with the punk. You can't just shout into a microphone for 35 minutes and say you've made an album.

Rough, and not in a good way.

Yet another, does what ot says on the tin band. The names of both band and album let you know exactly what you are in for. And in this case it's not much. TV Party being the only track worthy of comment as it did make me smile. Unfortunately good as it was even it couldn't drag the album above a 1.

Oh wow. So bad. One dimensional. My ears are bleeding.

No, just no.

Nope. 1

Ništa niščim.

This kind of hard core punk is just not for me. Indistinct screaming. You know that crowd is annoying and pushing people. The bar is filled with smoke and everyone has horrendous BO. Kasey described the exact bar scene this fits and it’s just not for me.

Sounds like this dude is just dry heaving

1 - Puro ruido

Whole lotta screamo that I can’t be loving

That's never a good thing.

If I could rate this zero, I would.

This was pretty friggen bad it’s like heavy metal with mad instrumentals and lyrics. TV Party was kinda good tho but damn that was brutal…

Horrible

I like punk in general, and i get that this album was significant in the development of punk, ... but i just didn't enjoy it.

1/10…punk

Absolute crap. Sounds like someone dropping tools on a concrete floor for 40 minutes. Why is this sort of shit included on a list like this??

Music without melody does nothing for me. At least it was short.

This was a steaming pile of trash. I believe I have heard part/all of "TV Party" before. I would literally be that mother asking their kids, "What in the world is that noise you're listening to?" if my kids dared to listen to it. (Not their taste either.) I just don't get the entire punk thing. I have never wanted to rebel in that sense. I was and will forever be human and need to be loved, just like everybody else does.

Kidzbop punk. As if drinking a six-pack - not shooting heroin, not even smashing a 40 - is worth making a song about. The final word of this album is 'Noone comes in!!! Stay out!!!'. It conjures the image of a pimply teenager slamming the door on mom.

I'm sure I could vibe with some things they're singing about but I'd really much rather just listen to Henry Rollins speaking softly, thanks. TV Party is kinda funny. Once. 3/10 1 star.

Why am I only getting punk albums 😩

Annoying music mixed with brutally bad vocals is a good recipe for 1 star or F-.

I don't care for this genre

I think my copy must be damaged as it only has one track of horribleness repeated over and over. But each to their own.

Couldn't finish this one. I got the vibe after 3 songs

Don't like punk, didn't bother

Can’t be doing this personally but I respect this as a genre of music for other people

point9.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a banal punk album.

This lands among the worst music I've ever heard (if it can even be called music).

Could not make it through this album. Not my type of music.

I like the instruments but this is way too hardcore for me, just sounds like shouting

So bad, hate these punk albums

This was horrible when it started and then continued being horrible, not for me

Represents the dyeing pains of punk to my ears.

Horrible

Harsh vocals, poor singing, a dearth of melody - I just don't like punk music. I suppose it's better experienced live than on a recording. I can imagine being in a crowd that's very energised by the music, and having the amps dialled up to a volume level that I'd be uncomfortable listening to on my headphones would intensify the experience. But if you need all that to enjoy it fully, is the music itself actually any good?

Volim pank i volim HC, ali oni mi nikad nisu legli, naporni su mi. 1/5, 2/10

I can appreciate some punk, but I typically don't listen for the music but rather the message and the message here is way too on the nose. Yes we get that you're damaged and depressed. If your going to scream about something over mediocre guitar and drums at least make it have some nuance.

respectfully, i hate 1/5

Listening to this makes me anxious. Yuck, not for me.

I was never in the punk scene. But I'm sure if I heard this when I was 16 when it came out - I would have liked the speed and anger. But at 59 I was just glad it was only 34 minutes.

This one was pretty hard to consume. A lot of yelling and I couldn’t find the actual musical innovation.

The Good: We’ve got pirates! The Bad: They forgot to add some skull ’n bones… The Ugly: missing the flesh too… Two days in a row I am being presented with punk-esque music, and though I can stomach me some, I believe that I have reached my fill with punk and will need to place it close on the list to rap… So yeah… but I will give it 2* as it isn’t as bad as The Fall…

Werde in diesem Leben wohl kein Punk-Fan - Fand es furchtbar

Rise Above is decent. The rest sounds identical and I just can't deal with those shitty vocals.

Upon listening to Black Flag’s *Damaged* (1981), the extreme vocal delivery makes it genuinely difficult to classify, as Henry Rollins' unintelligible screaming and guttural shouts blur the line between rock aggression and a highly abrasive form of rap, given that I could barely decipher a single lyric. Furthermore, beneath the chaotic presentation and historical hype, the album's foundational punk and thrash elements ultimately fail to offer any structural or thematic innovations that hadn't already been explored by other bands within the burgeoning hardcore genre.

Just not for me.

What a nice album, what a melody.... no I'm kidding, absolutely not my taste. No interest at all

Not fun

I dunno, this was just a mess to me. Maybe there's something I'm just not getting. Best I can say is I'm glad they're having fun and that all the songs were short.

I am going to be honest, I did not care for this album. Most of the songs just didn't do anything for me. The background instrumentals just sounded very repetitive, and not in a catchy way. I don't automatically think repetitive is bad, but it's gotta be catchy or something. I also did not care for the lyrics in most of these songs. It's all the same thing. "WE GOTTA FIGHT THE GUY FIGHT THE WAR DRINK BEER GRRRRR I AM SO TOUGH"

35 minutes of maybe even too intense punk music with miserable vocals. 1,5

I'm RED flagging this album as something I never want to hear again.

Not for me

OTT heavy metal. I didn’t last long!

Typical punk album (yawn) 1001 album worthy: No - 52/100

2/10. Oh God this is really not my genre I guess. Was trying to work out if I liked this more or less than Peggy Suicide and genuinely I think less. It just really hard on the ears, I didn't like the vocals and the guitar playing isn't even interesting it's just the same boring power chords. I think the angry vibes is not why I listen to music and this is becoming more evident from my scores.

nix für mich!

Cant stand this sort of thing.

Didn't like

Repetitive and boring. Really hated, DNF.

It’s damaged, alright. I hated this shit when I was 20 and I hate it more now.

Boy this was a tough listen, and the closest I came to stopping an album part way through. Too bleak and despairing for me. Though I can say, I did get a small chuckle out of TV Party.

I couldn't listen to this.

Rubbish drivel

Way to much for me, very heavy rock.

Nah bruh

Didn’t resonate at all. Songs felt cheesy and forced

Not into it

Give a few preteens enough instruction to hack out a crude melody and keep time. Then have them come up with lyrics about drinking and partying. Plug them into a PA and turn up the volume. This is what you get. It’s the first thing a garage band knocks out for a cover because it takes minimal talent and musicianship. This has no place on a best-of list.

Ingratiatingly painful to listen to.

Not really into this style of punk but I can generally listen to it without hating my life too much thanks to my girlfriend being into punk. It was all just a bit too tuneless and thrashy for me.

Not my type

Really not for me

Did not like a single song on this album. Maybe this genre of music is not for me

Really not my thing at all. Every word is spat out rather painfully. It doesn't sound as much like the vocal control you normally hear in metal (I dont listen to metal much...), as it does someone with a bad cough going onto stage anyways. They are probably skilled on their instruments, but everything sounds the same, and when I skimmed through the album before writing this, I had a very hard time finding anything to like at all. Best Song: No More Worst Song: TV Party

Unlistenable, it's chatoic with harsh vocals and rough production. All the songs sound the same and it's hard for someone outside the hardcore punk circle to enjoy any of this. Best song: Rise Above Worst song: Damaged II

Sjonge jonge. Mijn 'Life of pain' raakte hier behoorlijk 'damaged' van. 'No more', riep ik al snel, ik raak in een 'Depression', ik ben nu al 'Thirsty and miserable', 'Gimmie gimmie gimmie' alsjeblieft een 'Six pack', het is tijd voor een 'TV party' in 'Room 13' of in een 'Padded cell' om enigzins bij te kunnen komen van deze achterlijke bagger...

Too angsty for my liking.

I can't discern one song from another, what the heck is this dude yelling about

And that sucked, even for Punk Rock it was bad.

Just kept getting worse and worse.

Damaged and Life of Pain. Great titles for my experience listening to this album. Not my genre, for sure.

Horrible punk album. Just horrible to listen to. Damaged...yes I am. 1.5 stars

Bad, boring album. TV Party was funny! Glad this was a shorter album and had one good song.

Hardcore Punk is my least favorite kind of punk. And I already do not like punk

Please... no more punk... I can't take anymore...

🤮 I don’t like punk

This album was crazy, I wanted to like it but just could not believe a band put this out

The only thing damaged was my ears

unbearable tbh.. lyrics and music sound like a 13 yr old rock band

At least the songs were short

Still don't like punk.

Absolutely not.

this was terrible

Yeah, nah. I'm not going to go through this again. Survived 10 minutes, probably world record.

Just noise and screaming

mucho ruido

I don’t like this kind of music

not mine, to damaged

Such a unique sound

SIX PACK!

A rare DNF

The usual useless screaming.

I almost couldn’t get through this one.

This feels harsh but I just couldn't. I don't think I would've been into this even during my "punk phase"

Not my thing

Should be called red flag. Not my jam

No. Depressing guitar grind, AGAIN.

Another day, another Punk album I hate. Compared to Junkyard, Damaged sees a bit more of goodness; I could actually bear a full listen. That being said, I didn’t; enjoy it. The quality quite literally dropped immediately, with the only semi-enjoyable track being Rise Above. All in all, Damaged is a trash album. Best Song: Rise Above

Not for me

Not my music

Thought the first song was fun punk metal but utterly hated the rest.

Well...I tried...

unlistenable to me

made it halfway through the first song before giving up on the album

No thanks

Couldn't stand listening to "screaming".

They probably have a strong urge to punch something. At least it sounds like it

not enjoyable

Hardcore Punk ist nicht so meins.

Terrible death metal type stuff.

The t-shirts and logo are cool. The music utterly worthless. It's as if they wanted to create the most idiotic and ugliest music possible. One recommends the chapter in Michael Azerrad's excellent book to listening to this toxic noise.

Sub par punk from the guy who sued Negativland.

0.5 - the reason this isn’t 0 is because they played some instruments

There will be an end of the spectrum for punk, metal, and possibly some other genres that is gonna be unappreciate-able for me, and this Black Flag album is at that end of the punk spectrum. Six Pack is slightly more engaging than the first two tracks. But barely. Oh my days the vocals are so bad, the mixing is so bad. Its not even loud and punky enough. TV Party is an embarrassment. This is really hard to listen to. Its so difficult to relate to this noisy angst in 2023, it just gives me angry irrational white man vibes. Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie maybe the least bad song so far. My favourite moment of the album was the abrupt stop at the end of Life of Pain. If you separate context and influence from the music, there is as close to zero redeeming quality to this as is conceivably possible. 0.6/5

Awful. Zero stars.

Nah, not one for the top 1,001. Didn't find a single track I liked. Unfortunately, it's a 1 from me

Jag är skraj för Henry Rollins.

Not a punk person, either

This is definitely a punk album. Short songs, fast paced, heavy sounds, lots of talking about just wanting to have beers with friends. Did not do it for me, would not want to listen again. No songs that stick out positively. 1/5

pas ma came du tout

Teveel teringherrie

Punk...loud noises!!!

Has some feel of something like Ramones in the tone, but very annoying to listen to overall. Creaky music and scream-y. Just not my jam at all. 1.5

Kept the Spotify station after listening and discovered it’s not just Black Flag. this is not the genre for me. Very muddy and difficult to hear the lyrics which surprises me as I am aware of Henry Rollins’ spoken word stuff. Best enjoyed by sweaty men colliding with each other violently in a mosh pit, which is something I have never understood the appeal of

kuivakausi...kuivaa kautta.... 8 vuotta ei mitalia mm kisoista...paitsi tänään...PRONSSIA!!!!! wuolma murto.... rikkoi sen kaudenm.. .mutta albumeissa jatkuu.. paskaa albumia jällleen kerran kuka osasu odottaa, minä. minä osasin odottaa rise above

The people who "largely ignored" this album on it's release most certainly made the correct choice.

Even when I was young, angry, and listening to skater punk, this would’ve been too hard.

Three 1's on the bounce. Hardcore punk is also not my thing

hated it

A huge success if they wanted to create the most idiotic and ugliest music possible. One wonders how many of the people who wear the t-shirts (with the admittedly cool logo) actually have heard the record.

I can see whey this album was largely ignored by critics and the public at the time of its release - the big mystery is how it got on this list.

It's not that i don't like metal/heavier music, it's just that this ain't it for me

One of the songs has the lyric “depression will kill me”, this cured my depression as this album is now what will kill me

Ya, I can't do that.
