Reviews (page 5 of 13)

A welcome and necessary change for Blur, but I do wonder if this album is notable and innovative enough to be in the 1001. Some great tracks, and a few filler tracks, so only a 4 from me.

This sounds like a lot of modern grunge in a great way. Pretty much every song on here was delightful.

Great album. Didn’t really appreciate how good it is.

4.5 out of 5. Really enjoyed this! Death of a party prolly my favorite. I already have liked a few blur songs so I expected to really like this album also.

Disc 2 was niet echt nodig geweest. Begon wel erg sterk

Zeer nice, lekker veelzijdig.

A lot of fun. Nice shift in Brit pop

Solid 90's rock

sounded modern, unique, enjoyable

Would that they could go back to rocking this hard. M.o.r. Sounds an awful lot like a green day cut

Really enjoyed this. familiar with a few songs and surprises I didn’t know the band.

Great! Already knew and liked beetlebum and song 2, the other songs were good too but less memorable

Would inappropriately mosh pit on this, 4/5

Though I think Pulp’s This Is Hardcore is the better - in fact the *best* - Britpop is dead album, between that album and Blur you have a pretty definitive statement of intent from two bands who benefited from that label and also were determined not to get trapped by it. “Beetlebum” sets the stage immediately with its woozy, burned out on excess tone and lyrics, signaling a break with their previous sound and a more personal lyrical style. The nods to Pavement and similar American acts abound, but on this listen I was struck by just how much of Bowie is laced throughout this, most obvious on M.O.R. which is a deliberate homage to him and Brian Eno, but also on “Strange News from Another Star”, which from the title on down sounds like something Bowie would have recorded circa his time in Berlin. A thrilling record, both within the context of Blur’s discography, which it represents such a sharp break from, and as a record in isolation. “Song 2” may have been overplayed to the point of cliche, but that first blast of distortion still hits like a freight train.

This album rules. Blur rules. Fun and cool and rock and roll.

An interesting blend of alt pop, sensibilities, and unconventional creativity. I pressed play expecting to hear just another bland Offspring type of band. Instead, I heard elements of the Kinks, Bowie, and the Velvet Underground. A pleasant surprise.

Bloated, but there is a lot of good alt rock here. Too bad they didn’t know what to cut.

I unironically love albums that can't decide what genre they are.

Great album. If you don't like it, maybe you should get your head checked

Great album. A definite insight to the world of albarn.

This is a great album. Heavier Blur, a grungy feel, great songwriting. The guitar playing is brilliant, with some trippy sounds that punctuate the songs perfectlly, making this arty as well as poppy and grungy. This is the sound of a successful band pushing the envelope in a new direction and sounding even better for it. The first 'side' is better than the second, ie. up to and including Death of a Party is all excellent. After that, it gets a bit flabby (Their subsequent album, '13', is more complete and has no flab at all.) Nonetheless, it's a great album, the first bunch of songs. (It might just be the order of the songs that makes it feel like it loses the plot a bit. Essex Dogs is an excellent way to finish, but the ones before drag a little.)

Ihan jees, mutta Gorillaz on parempi

Good album, enjoyed listening to it.

I enjoyed this, fun guitar pop. Could trim three songs tho for runtime.

Brit pop? Yay. Switched up stretched Britpop? Yep. I’m in.

hai okay ending my day with this album i guess... two songs in i'm enjoying it so far. but those are also the most popular songs on the album so i'm not sure how good the others are. i don't know how to feel about this album. i feel like it could be better but it could also be way way worse. stand out song: death of a party & strange news from another star. deep fucking lyrics. and i like the chords on strange news from another star its really good. actually i like strange news from another star a million times more. very good song. anyways i don't like the vocals but i like the music. thank you!

Song 2. Reat of music. I like both versions of Blur.

It's okay. I liked their Brit pop better but I'm old.

Not my favorite blur album, but there's a couple of gems.

Interesting, not fully convincing. I like some of the songs very much tho

Super, vor allem der Beginn!

- Great bright guitar tone, catchy riffs - Distinct vocals - Good lyricism, even if it can become simple at times - Amazing opening track, followed by iconic lead single 'Song 2' - Strongly emotional ballads - Good variety of upbeat to mellow tracks - Lots of replay value, really fun to listen to - Great drums and bass instrumentation - Upbeat Brit-pop, 'summer' feeling - Iconic singles - Can be very experimental at times, not as poppy as some of their other work - I found myself not paying attention to the individual instruments, instead enjoying the track as a whole - This album already has a legacy which speaks for its greatness, containing Blur's most popular song and serving as one of the defining albums of the Brit-pop genre, making Blur a household name, partly because of their rivalry with the other mainstream Brit-pop band Oasis. However, I found myself enjoying this album much more than any of Oasis'. The upbeat guitar style, combined with Damon's iconic vocal style and lyricism, mixed with just enough experimental work to make this album really stand out in its space creates a truly enjoyable listening experience, something which I found myself replaying not just for the review - but out of enjoyment.

It was interesting. The lead singer has a very distinct voice. All in all not a bad album.

Classique de Blur, excellent album.

I enjoyed the music and was glad to familiarize myself with some Blur songs other than Song 2, the only one that got any airplay

Too front loaded There is a 5 version of this album hidden within this. Too long, middle sucks but On Your Own is soo good Scrapes a 4

In view of the current post-punk revival, this album sounds surprisingly modern

Moments of brilliance but nothing too special. Really liked the heaviness and interesting sonic quality splattered across the album. Didn't so much love the insincerity in the lyrics. Self-pitying super-successful rock stars has always been a sore spot for me and I think there is a bit of that here, albeit more abstract than Bon Jovi, Metallica or Bob Seger. All in all though an enjoyable listen if not slightly contrived, like most of Blur's stuff, but well executed.

Great BritPop, the originators. 4 stars.

Definitely prefer their Britpop sound but this is a worthwhile listen. I recognize Song 2 from Lego Rock Band lmao

Purty good.

This was pretty good and it has the woohoo song. Still, there’s something about it that kept me from fully getting into it. Maybe I’m just exhausted from all the Brit pop so I’m not going to hold that against it too much. Also really liked You’re So Great. Torn but I’ll go with a light 4.

Had vaguely heard of them but never listened before. Solid rock album I’d probably listen to again

Better than I expected. Had no idea that the name of the second song (which I knew) was Song #2. Still think Oasis is the much better band of these 2!

I get why Blur was considered more tenintellectual/sophisticated than Oasis after listening to this album. However, there were very few memorable Melodie’s. It’s clearly based in rock tradition but brings in more contemporary sounds (like in “Death of A Party”). I Loved the beginning of “On Your Own”. “Theme From Retro” reminds me of “I want you (she’s so heavy)”. The final track was a slog to get through.

Not reaching the heights of Parklife, but even heroin-infused versions Albarn and Coxon are pretty damn good.

Prior to today, I think the only Blur song I had heard before was Song 2. There has been quite a few Gorillaz songs that I really like, so I was pretty excited to finally check out Blur's music. Overall I quite enjoyed this, and I will probably check out some more of Blur's music after this.

Ah Damon thanks!

This album surprised me! I think one of Blur's strengths are that they're great at drawing clear inspiration from other artists and still maintaining a clear voice. Half the songs on this album made me think, "Oh hold on, this sounds just like _____", but those songs were still very strong on their own. I think that's hard to do! A lot of surprising influences in this one but man, I don't think a single song fell flat! I already really like Blur on a song-by-song basis but I was expecting to only like about half of these (including the ones I already knew and love, Beetlebum and Song 2). But yeah, I'll definitely continue spending time with this album in the future. Some of these really blew me away, like "Theme From Retro" (which really sounded like something off of Blondie's Automerican). A strong 4 for me!

Awesome 90s alternative rock. This flew under my radar but there are a handful of songs I recognized. Just a good combination of angst and rock.

It gets 4 for Song 2, the rest is decent but not that noteworthy.

This is a fantastic album for the first eight tracks! But I don't really care for the last six tracks apart from "Movin On". Some Killer, some filler, then! Full disclosure: I've listened to this plenty before so just skimmed through the tracks. The best Blur album, if anyone is interested, is "Modern Life is Rubbish" which is ALL killer and, if you include "Pop Scene" on the extended version, some extra killer too.

Still listen to a couple of these today - but the rest of it does feel a bit dated to be fair. Perfect time capsule of that era though.

I have always been a fan of this record, but it has been a long time and it was nice to spend some time with an old friend.

Good stuff, love to hear that 2nd song and learn where it comes from

Better than I thought!

Super interesting. I’ve never really checked Blur out, but now I feel compelled to dig deeper.

1. She's a guuuun 2. Iconic 3. Troche nudniejsza, ale fajna zabawa z wokalem. Koncowka dojebana :) 4. Ta mi sie nie podoba, troche taka sweet usa rockowa 5. Nie dla mnie 6. Intro swietne, spoookyyy ❤️ podoba mi sie klimat, organy? 7.

Really good wtf lol. Tapers off at the end tho

Go figure, another britpop album that I love. It's funny, I had been listening to Muswell Hillbillies and laughing at how the Kinks made a country album that was the most British thing in the world. Then I get fed this album. Hadn't really considered Blur, sure, they and this album are responsible for the most played song ever in garage and basement teenage bands worldwide of all time, but what else? Well, I still don't know what else but what I do know that this venture into Indie emo alt industrial noise rock was a successful one

Enjoyed it

Good album. I had no idea "Song 2" was by Blur or even on this album.

Pretty good album. Didn't feel like there was a consistent "theme" or maybe I wasn't listening close enough. I have a lot of Nostalgia with Song2 because I was 3 or 4 when I first heard it and it blew my mind at the time. It was in the Fifa: Road to World Cup 98 game and my brother and I played it a bunch! ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2igfndqKnmk )It gave me one of my intros to stuff with distortion and that classic RAT pedal sound! Standouts: * Song 2 * You're so great * Strange News from Another Star (Got some Gorillaz vibes with this one) The opposite of a standout and a song that gave me weird vibes: Essex Dogs 3.5/5 but rounding up to a 4

Great Listen. Essex Dogs was the breakout track for this one. 4/5

Verry old school my parents would listen to that but nice gitaar and drums

Song 2 makes the album great but it starts to fall off for me later down the track list

7.5/10

El classico

Really nice blocked guitar play. Texts get repetitive from time to time. Overall music with thought and heart, not much to complain about. Even the long-ish instrumentals keep a good variety.

Having only known 'song 2', this very long album was also surprisingly wide ranging as well, spanning quite the variety of sonic textures. Most often though, I got hints of Gorillaz

Good album. Started off strong.

Good solid album - first half is excellent but it kind of tapers in interest towards the end but still overall fun.

This is the album I think of when I think of Blur, but not because of Song 2. I really enjoy the more serious/intense and less playful energy on this album than on their earlier releases. Beetlebum is an iconic song and a great start to the album. I can't not play along to the guitar riff in my head when the chorus kicks in. The last two songs are a little slow, though, and lead me to take off one star.

Doesn't sound like the blur I know. In a good way though. Fun rock album that can be left on loop. 3.75/4

I've never listened to this album (except the one song. You know the one.) I was pleasantly surprised. I assumed it was going to be a brit pop slog like a lot of the other albums on this list, but it's just the slightest hint edgier than some. Like when your white girlfriend says the carbonara you made was spicy because it has black pepper in it. Favorite tracks: M.O.R., Death of a Party, Movin' On

Happy acoustic, Beatles-esque beetle bum, 90s cool.

1. Album Title and Cover Art: The album's self-titled nature and the stark, minimalist cover art, featuring just the band's name in bold letters, reflects the band's desire to present a more mature and stripped-down version of themselves compared to their previous albums. 2. Musical Diversity: "Blur" is a testament to the band's willingness to evolve and explore new musical territories. While their previous albums, such as "Parklife" and "Modern Life Is Rubbish," had a distinctly Britpop sound, this album showcases a wide range of influences, including elements of art rock, electronic, and American indie rock. The album marks the band's departure from their purely Britpop identity, embracing a more global and alternative sound. 3. Songwriting and Lyrics: Damon Albarn's songwriting on this album is top-notch. The lyrics delve into themes of disillusionment, urban life, and personal introspection. "Beetlebum" explores addiction, "Death of a Party" reflects on the disillusionment of youth, and "Strange News from Another Star" is hauntingly beautiful. Albarn's ability to write evocative and thought-provoking lyrics is a standout feature of this album. 4. Standout Tracks: "Song 2": Arguably the most well-known song on the album, it's a high-energy rock anthem with infectious "woo-hoo" chants that became an anthem of the era. "Beetlebum": A melancholic and introspective track that kicks off the album with a slow, almost dream-like quality. "The Universal": A beautiful and grandiose song that captures the essence of the album with its orchestral arrangement and reflective lyrics. 5. Production: The album was produced by Stephen Street, who had previously worked with the band on their earlier albums. His production on "Blur" is exceptional, helping the band experiment with a variety of instruments and sounds while maintaining a cohesive sound. 6. Impact and Legacy: "Blur" was a critical and commercial success and solidified the band's place in music history. It showcased their artistic growth and willingness to take risks, which was appreciated by both fans and critics. It also set the stage for their later work, like "13" and "Think Tank," where they continued to push musical boundaries. In conclusion, "Blur" is a seminal album in the band's discography and a key moment in the 1990s Britpop movement. Its musical diversity, introspective lyrics, and willingness to break free from the constraints of a genre make it a classic that still resonates with audiences today. It's an album that showcases the band's artistic evolution and willingness to experiment, making it a must-listen for any music enthusiast.

Lovely stuff

Liked it a lot. Will listen again

Song 2 is great!

It's got that one on it.

Great album that Ive heard before many times!

Amazing album ! Wow

A great album. Melodic, quirky and not trying to be anything other than itself. Makes me wanna deep dive their other albums.

Decent

A little uneven, but at its best it is excellent.

I always preferred Blur over Oasis (who are dreadful) and this album cements that preference; showing progression and a range of musical ideas (something Oasis have never had). There are half a dozen standout tracks; Beetlebum, Song 2 (with Albarn's best John Lydon impression) Country Sad Ballad Man... and that's just the first three tracks.

Blur > Oasis

Sitting in my best friend's bedroom in 1997 feelings.

уфф

Had Modern Life is Rubbish only two albums ago. This is just so much better in my opinion. Interesting and still achieving the energy Blur puts out without being a 2+ hour slog of noise for noise's sake to be challenging.

Decent fun with some cool experimental aspects. Rating: 3.9

loved it blur are great

Beetlebum: Really good- 9/10 Song 2: Great groove, lyrics are kinda eh, very catchy- 8/10 Country Sad Ballad Man: Perfect- 10/10 M.O.R: Lyrics are pretty bad, sounds like a normal britpop song to be honest- 5/10 On your Own: Fun song, grew on me as the song went on- 8/10 Theme from Retro: Fantastic Instrumental- 9/10 You're so Great: Great textures, nice to have a more acoustic song- 8/10 Death of a Party: Best song on the album- 10/10 Chinese Bombs: Good song- 9/10 I'm Just a Killer for your Love: Carries on the vibe of the last song, one of my favorite on the album- 10/10 Look Inside America: I know the singer went on to make Gorillaz, but this sounds like if Gorillaz did a 90's alt rock song- 9/10 Strange News from Another Star: One of my favorites on the album- 10/10 Movin' On: The lyrics are very Beck-esk, not as good as some of the other tracks on the album- 7/10 Essex Dogs: Dude really thought he was Jim Morrison, good song though- 8/10 Not a crazy amount of variation in the songs. Overall score (based on average)- 8.6

Yeah, we've had a lot from Blur already, and I like it. First time spinning all this stuff, though I went through this album twice. I appreciate the adventurous attitude and songwriting, influences are dripping off them and they still sound wholly original, aiming straight for a Brit-pop thing while straining the conventional. I'm all in.

worse then oasis but still pretty good

Genuinely enjoyed it! It wasn’t the perfect album, but it was a good time!

This has a video game song I love! Good album overall.

This album looks familiar. Came out the year I graduated from high school. This first one sounds like the Beetles funny because the song is called Beetlebum. Pretty good. I'll give it 4 stars

i prefer gorillaz. fav songs: beetlebum, youre so great, death of a party, strange news from another star.

Damn, another great album. Everything lately has been either four stars or two. I think we've had a couple from Blur, but this one is the strongest so far. And of course I actually know "Song 2," that's been everywhere for decades. "You're So Great" is such a good love song too, very nonchalant expression of love. The closer was also excellent. Solid '90s rock album, they did a lot right on here. Favorite tracks: You're So Great, Essex Dogs, Song 2, Beetlebum, On Your Own. Album art: Surprise surprise, it's all a blur. Looks to be someone frantically rushing a stretcher through a hospital. Not too memorable, but I like it. 4/5

Yet another great album!

I actually enjoyed this album even though I’m not a fan of their hit song.

I think this is the third Blur album that I've gotten on this list, which didn't have me super excited when I got it this morning, but I think this is the best one that I've heard so far. This one feels a little grittier than the others, and has the obvious benefit of having their most well-known song. Overall I thought it was a really good listen 4/5

when they changed

Was expecting to be a bit more blown away but 👍

1997 - Indie rock; lo-fi; alternative rock; art rock; experimental rock

I liked the majority of the tracks, a few less interesting ones. Cool

p good. lob damon albarn.

amazingly wonderful. Love the sounds and the vocals sounds a lot like ok computer from what ive heard of it but less dark. I enjoy the fun and more sadder songs on this album. Amazing

Whoehoe!!

Well this was Brit pop bliss. A seminal album I believe but I was unfamiliar. So no real nostalgia for me but I think it's stand up great music

Yeah it's preeeeeetty good.

3.9 Not one of my fave from Blur but still a great listen every time. Fave songs: Beetlebum, Chinese bombs, i'm just a killer for your love

Very 90s rock, felt super nostalgic listening to this album even though Song 2 is the only song I’ve heard before

Song 2 is a slapper from my youth. Sounds nothing like the rest of the album which is excellent.

this album feels like the best of britpop — blur incorporating some alternative sound into it, and while the two don’t mesh perfectly, it generally works. i tried to ignore how overplayed song 2 is, and it was pretty good. there were some boring moments, but overall a quite good album.

Good album, but outside of the first two songs, I feel like this isn’t their best material. ‘Beetlebum’ and ‘Song 2’ are great, though. The other twelve songs are still good, but they don’t reach those heights. I’d say that although those gripes are there, it’s an enjoyable Britpop album, and it deserves a 4.

A good album, the start of them moving out from under the britpop banner into something more interesting.

- "At least Song 2 isn't on this album" he said 2 days before getting the album with Song 2 on it - Which, to be fair, isn't a bad song at all I've just heard it wayyyyyy too much in my life - Actually really good alt rock, enjoyed this a lot more than the other one

Beetlebum is great. I've always hated Song 2 -- even if it's supposed to be ironic, I can't listen to it. Because of that, I haven't listened to this album as much as their first three. It’s a departure from the early albums, but doesn’t sound totally different. I really liked it and probably should have given it more time back in the day.

Classic. Truly brilliant album full of gems! Not a duff track on the album and that’s coming from a massive Oasis fan! Loved this!

Better than I remember, fuck oasis

Holy 90's.

Good for the most part. The sound is pretty diverse, so it doesn't get boring. Sometimes it has the feel of weird to be weird, but mostly it's interesting. Essex Dogs sucks ass. I had to skip it.

Although Song 2 is overexposed, it is still a fantastic song which I'm happy to hear. And I didn't realise how good the rest of the album is. A mix of sharp songwriting and experimenting with textures.

I thought this album was really weird but well put together for being so out there.

Very 90s! Much nostalgia.

If there are no second acts in American lives, in great bands perhaps a second life is what makes them great. The Stone Roses, producers of one and a half great albums, could not for the life of them produce a second act. Neither could Britpop premier leaguers Pulp or Suede, the latter refining their sound over the coming decades rather than ever escaping it. Oasis bless them would never admit such a thing was even possible. So it's Blur who produced on this album an act of escapology - adding grunge, lo-fi, even psychedelia to the Britpop template that in the previous album had both peaked and exhausted itself. A fantastic album, one that showed the band could absorb almost any influence and use it to go to new places.

beetlebum is such a good opener - a little downhill from there - 13 is better end to end so not quite there yet

Woo hoo! I knew someone who created Song 2 from scratch. A fine album

Better than I expected. Some solid hits, especially the first half. 3.75/5

Goed album! Favoriete nr.: Look inside America

I always thought this was a very solid album, but a bit forced. I like the previous typical britpop albums more. But their next album 13 is quite a bit better, and sounds like a more natural deviation from their initial style. In any case this album is still much better than the Oasis albums on the list, but not as good as the Pulp / The Auteurs / Suede albums from that period.

I quite liked this album, finding it much better than Modern Life is Rubbish and Park Life we were served before.

Very entertaining album, a bit inconsistent perhaps but certainly the best Blur effort.

Brought me back to some good years

Very good album. Too long, same as many albums of that time. Many very memorable songs. Diverse in styles.

Great album really enjoyed revisiting this

It is a more lo-fi oriented album than their previous two, more pop-rock records, they showed their versatility here. There are some great classics on it (Beetlebum, Song 2), but overall I prefer some of their other works.

More appealing to 2023 me than 1997 me. Almost perfect but Albarn’s mockney accent just grates on me.

woohoo

Besser als erwartet, Shoegaze ist zu hören.

I'm going to tell on myself a bit here. I always told people I was a big Blur fan but secretly had only ever listened to their greatest hits album. But, after hearing a full-length studio album of theirs for the first time, I'm proud to say I wasn't as big of a poser as I thought I was. I really am a big fan of Blur. This did not disappoint. They combine so many genres into one unique sound. It's rock, punk, techno, and new wave all rolled in to one. It's Beatles-esque in a lot of ways but also the foundation of a lot of music that came after. Solid work gentlemen.

Well, this is the fifth album Blur released but it is far from the best. Saying that, Beetlebum is brilliant, Song 2 was ubiquitous in the 1990s and there's probably not many people who've never heard it even now. The stand-out, hands-down track of the album though is On Your Own. I'd forgotten it, but it just slams. Synth, bass, drums (machine?) and different work on the lead guitar adds into some almost spot-on perfect, archetypal Blue vocals. Shows that Blur could hurl out some cracking stuff. There's some dross in here too - country sad ballad man was painful in the 1990s and still is now. Theme from Retro wants to be a blur-ish take on the circus-y bits of Sgt Pepper, but it just comes off as cack-handed. Overall, I'd say this would be a 5 star album from someone who wasn't blur. But because it is blur, four..

The Britpoppers can keep “Parklife” or “Modern Life is Rubbish”. To me, this is Blur’s finest hour, as their music crystallises into a perfect blend of wry character studies and compact, hooky pop. They also find the right balance of honouring their musical heritage without slipping too much into pastiche… mostly. The fourteen songs here reveal a more mature side to Damon Albarn’s songwriting: no less witty, slightly more introspective, a little more tender. “Beetlebum” is a strong start and worthy single, while “On Your Own” and “Movin’ On” are irrepressible pop-rock anthems. Catchy, direct and anthemic, they are both vastly under-appreciated entries in Blur’s catalogue. Elsewhere, “MOR”, a brilliant propulsive rock song, just about gets away with lifting David Bowie’s “Boys Keep Swinging”, and “Strange News from Another Star” barely escapes Hunky Dory’s shadow. When the mood drops to a chilling temperature, it doesn’t feel too distracting or indulgent: I can mostly appreciate the change in direction and the sophistication in some of the arrangements. “Theme from Retro”, “Death of a Party” and “I’m Just a Killer for Your Love” all convey a dark alienation not a million miles from various new-wave artists of the late 70s and early 80s. “Essex Dogs” is the only one which risks going a little too far astray with its irritating CD-ROM/whirling disc drive sound effects. Theres a very satisfying balance between murky synth lines and crunchy guitar riffs, streamlining the band’s sound very well. The lo-fi production (read: liberal distortion and filtering on vocals) really gives the record some character and helps elevate the songs beyond their bare bones. Take Graham Coxon’s charming solo turn: “You’re So Great”. The recording crackles and hisses away like a weathered analogue tape, and the vocals are so fragile they could shatter on any line, but it wouldn’t work any other way. So in summary, a very solid album. Music shouldn’t be all about rivalries, but it is worth noting that this album veers left of the field in a way Oasis never quite managed. With this release, Blur put an end to the debate of which of the two bands were more versatile, long-lasting and- arguably- talented.

Blur is band I never will turn off but yet I hardly ever think to listen to. I owned this and Park life and they never got heavy rotation for me. It's good pop rock without going too pop, glad I re-listened to it after many years.

I do not apologize for still loving Song 2, and it’s ubiquity doesn’t diminish my need to listen to it at maximum volume. There are so many good songs here: the stomp of On Your Own, the lo-fi strum You’re So Great, punk rock Chinese Bombs,… I don’t love all of Blur’s output, but this album is full of good tunes. Graham Coxon has some good solo records, too.

Favorites - Song 2, Movin’ On. Album is a solid 3.5 or 4.

Not really a twang fan

Close to a 5

Not blur’s best but a good listen

I have listened to a lot of Blur, but never to this album all the way through. It's a very good album and I think it deserves a place in the book because it shows a change in their sound from the previous work. Especially notable for the change in lyrical style that is full fleshed out with "13."

I don't like these guys because the drummer was rude to Nardwuar once.

- fun - 7.5/10

Blur ditched their Britpop roots for some indie rock.

Eclectic brit pop. Beatles, bowie

Back in like, ‘95 I would have identified as the world’s biggest Blur fan, but by ‘97 - after The Great Escape and getting a flat and some decks, I lost all interest in Indie and was all about trying to mix Trip Hop. Shame, it seems like this might have been one of Blur’s best albums but I was busy elsewhere at the time. His voice kind of goes through me now though, so can’t go higher that a 4 without the emotional weight attached to their earlier stuff.

Skemmtilegt og skrýtið á köflum. Indíið alveg að gera sig.

I didn’t give this one enough time but I liked what I heard.

Lots of fun to already hear Gorillaz in the mix

Blur makes an indie rock record. Specifically, a Pavement record—there are moments on this that sound like all kinds of 1995’s Wowee Zowee (I see now, reading the album’s wikipedia page, that this influence has been confirmed by the band). I think this is the moment Blur distinguishes itself from that whole Brit Pop scene (much the same way Radiohead did this very same year.) It’s the first time I can hear hints of Gorillaz in Damon Albarn’s songwriting choices; he (and the band) is (are) experimenting more with non-rock, instruments and production choices here. For instance, “Theme From Retro” and “Strange News from Another Star” sound very much like they could have been on a Gorillaz concept album (the latter even would be quite at home on a Bowie album!). It’s a long record. It kind of passes in a blur. Which I like. I bought it used on CD from Amoeba years and years ago but never really listened to it. The liner notes reveal almost nothing about the piece. There are no album credits or lyrics. Even the song titles on the backside are easily missed. The backside features an image of the band amongst sulfur fields in Iceland; but it’s all clouded by a thick bank of haze. The rest is an orange blur left in the wake of some hospital patient being rushed down a hallway and out of sight. I’ve read Albarn’s lyrics are especially potent on this record, but I didn’t necessarily pay them close attention (in part because I couldn’t read along in the liner notes.) I expect I might like this album more over time. For certain, the influences they draw from and direction they take with this album are more in line with my tastes, traditionally. But for whatever reason, at this moment, I much prefer Parklife.

Not as good as the other album

Surprises in here

Very cool, like the variation of energy, style, instrumentation etc, yet consistency and edginess throughout. was thinking hmm this sounds familiar OH WAIT gorillaz…. 8/10

Better than Oasis...

Simply Lively Good ol' Blur

Excellent experience. "Song 2" is a modern classic. It's catchy and raucously fun and so memorable. If you were alive in the 1990's or ever watched atleast 5 movies from the 90's (because I wager that 1 in every 5 had this song in it) then you heard this song and thought it was sick. Unfortunately I don't think any other song on the record comes even close to it. "Beetlebum", the opener, is funny and definitely interesting and is the second-most played song on the album, but doesn't capture that magic that "Song 2" does. "Theme from Retro" is trippy in both writing and production. It sounds cool and is a nice contrast from the first 4 tracks as it sounds nothing like them while also remaining consistent inside their overall sound. "Death of a Party" is also similar- as it stands out with some sounds that are foreign to the rest of the record but not so far that it is an unwelcome contrast. Overall I enjoyed it. 4/5 I think? Maybe like a 3.9. It sounds great and is dynamic, but man am I just constantly reminded that nothing on the record comes close to one single song. Is that a bad thing? That a solid band happened to write an incredible song? That sounds like a good thing right?

4 stars. I would like this album on vinyl. Surprising amount of good songs

Yet another band I hadn't heard much from, except for the radio hit "Song 2". I liked it - solid 4/5.

It is a great shame that Song 2 has been added to every sports broadcast in the world ever because it's a great song that's been ruined by overplaying. That said I love Blur and pretty much everything they've done. This album was a bit of a shift from the previous 3 and shows a little more maturity which I like. Solid effort 4 stars.

Song 2 Beetlebum, country sad ballad man, on your own, death of a party, Essex dog MOR, theme from retro, strange news from another You're so great, Chinese bombs , movin on I'm just a killer for your love La guitarra y los recursos sonoros son impresionantes

Damon Albarn is still a fave

bien! te amo damon 8/10

I like Blur. This is more of the same however more mature and perhaps with half an eye on the Gorillaz? What else is there to say.

This apparently marks a departure from Britpop into a more alternative/indie rock influence. I like it better than the Britpop I’ve heard, so I’d say that change was a good move. Good variety, from Beatles influenced Beetlebum to the harder hitting, almost grungy Song 2, to the weirdness that Albarn would later take into Gorillaz. Great balance of experimentation while maintaining good songwriting. However, the second half of the album does slip quite a bit. Ultimately, the weaker second half knocks it down to a 4/5. Top Tracks: - Beetlebum – Chill and interesting track. - Song 2 – Highest energy and rockiness from the album. - Theme From Retro – Interesting space/psychedelic rock almost instrumental. - You’re So Great – Nice acoustic love song. - Death of a Party – Spacy track about the damage done by partying lifestyle.

Loved the album! Surprisingly, haha. I have somehow missed out on the entire second wave of brittish invasion. Only associated it with oasis, a band I can't stand unfortunately (or not). Had heard of song 2 of course but the entire album I'd actually good. Didn't care too much for Chinese bombs though.

Much less cheeky-chappie than their other albums, and better for it, even if it's not quite as catchy.

Good tunes, stagnated a bit towards the end

It was the first time my daughter heard this album. She really dug Song #2.

Like it

I was more drawn to the earlier tracks than the later, in general. Even so, it held on for a four.

I like this album a lot. I can hear the old school influences like David Bowie and The Beatles and more contemporary bands like Pavement. But I'm also getting a stronger, more specific POV from this band than on Modern Life is Rubbish, which I liked but couldn't love. After yesterday's Aretha, I'm feeling stingy with my 5s but I'd give this a solid 4.5 if I could.

I like the new direction Blur went on this record. This along with Parklife are probably their best albums. I would say something like 3.7 but gonna round up because Blur is awesome. 4/5

Simple, really: This is Blur's best album. And, by extension, I'd argue this is the all time winner of the Britpop battle. P.S. The joy that Song 2 used to bring me back when I played FIFA 98 - Road to World Cup!

First time I’ve heard anything besides song 2. Always been a Damon Albarn and this was more of what I like

It's a good Blur album. Much more of a logical progression than the radical departure I remembered at the time. A move towards more lo-fi sounds, and a rejection of britpop for sure, but some songs would still have fit the Great Escape or Parklife. Still, as a thirteen year old, I remember the guy in my record shop convincing me to get Brighten The Corners by Pavement instead - he said it was the album Blur had failed to make with this, and he's probably right - it is the better album.

Really enjoyed this one.

Loving brit pop at the moment and this is another classic

Lyssnade i Gif-Sur-Yvette.

A classic, but not all of it holds up. The singles still carry the whole thing though

I’m usually an Albarn hater but I have to give this one to him

woo hoo

Not my favourite Blur album but still lots to enjoy, and a key change in direction in their career. On paper this is one of their more stylistically uniform collections - an American-style guitar album without the lavish Britpop arrangements. But the variety of weird sounds and styles Graham Coxon coaxes from his guitar is impressive (see Essex Dogs and Death of a Party for two great examples). There's scuzzy lo-fi blues, punk, melodic balladry, singalong pop and two classic singles in Beetlebum and Song 2. Lovely stuff.

Probably my favourite Blur album, love song 2 since the days I used to play FIFA 98 Road to the World Cup.

You're So Great, Death of a Party, Essex Dogs är briljanta. Chinese Bombs, Strange News from Another Star är bra. Beetlebum är MYCKET bra. Bästa låt: BESLUTSÅNGEST men väljer ändå den morbida alkoholkärleksförklaringen You're So Great. Delad andraplats till Death of a Party och Essex Dogs.

This album starts out like an all time classic. Side 1 is non stop excellence...with some of the best power pop mixed with some stellar psychedelica. Side 2 is less successful as the songs are just not as memorable. All in all an excellent album 4 🌟

My favorite Blur album, some good memories with this one although it gets weird towards the end. Beetlebum and Song 2 are songs for the ages

It's good

Worth it for Song 2 alone

Blur is on top of very interesting sounds here, and there are some fun memorable moments

WUHOOOOO

WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOO goes the sound of 25% of Europe's post covid football stadiums when a goal is scored. at least it isn't the fucking can can, ay Bayern you bunch of lederhosen bumming cunts. It's going the same way as 7 nation army though, hard to listen to as a song thanks to football getting it's soulless mits on it. The album drops off a bit of a cliff after a very strong start. Thank God it's not the cor blimey cheeky cockney chappy allbran on this one.

A slow motion plane crash that should have been prevented before the inevitable 9/11 tragedy...

Really enjoyed this, song 2 brought me back to fifa 98 days

7/10 liked this way more than i've liked any other britpop album thus far. it had good energy and leaned a lot more into classic alt rock sounds, with interesting lyrics

always a favorite

I had Blur up against Oasis in my head early on, before I understood anything about the Britpop thing in the 90s. And I always dug this sound a little more. Whereas Definitely Maybe loses me after a couple songs, this one carries me all the way through. Very different sounds, but this is the one I gravitate to more. In this case, the most known song on this album - Song 2 - is maybe my least favorite. And I like it a lot. Mostly I like the mixtape feel of it - how different each song is from the others. They all have their own little personalities. Love it.

This album is better than it should be

Amazing musicianship and very coherent throughout. I do however find the lyrics and vocals a bit lackluster. Raw and dirty guitar-riffs, basslines and electronics with the occasional slower acoustic break makes this a definite staple of the genre.

Good album, def a few songs that I didn’t realize blur did! Smooth rock I guess, with some upbeat tracks

I just love blur. And I've always loved Damon albarn. The story of how song 2 came about is very funny. Really their most breakthrough stuff in the us market at least. But this album is delightfully weird.

This is an incredible album. Song 2? I had no idea!

Blur finally react to rather than against American indie rock and move on from Britpop. Not all the experimenting works, but the result is still pretty great on the whole.

Great album. Blur's struggle with genre and identity resulted in a sprawling album that goes beyond Britpop. Though the Britpop style still shines through at various points, this album is more fluid and incorporate more aggression and emotion than their previous work. The punk influence and emerging indie rock influence can be clearly heard.

Nisu Oasis.

Izbacio bih čak 3 pjesme i bilob puno bolje. Parklife > 13 > Modern Life is Rubbish > *Blur s/t* > The Great Escape > Leisure > itd.

Enjoyed this immensely - was hoping Song 2 wouldn't be one of the best songs on the album though, but it was. Death Of A Party the highlight. Some late Beatles vibes too. Can hear where The Vines got it.

It was all a blur

Varied and interesting, exploring way outside the box i'd put them in.

Woooohooo

Uneven in places, but some excellent tracks and overall a very good album!

90s nostalgia

WOO HOO

A classic

This thing is paced…horribly? Song 2 is good enough to carry this further than it deserves but whew this felt interminable

It was hard to not get the idea of "proto-gorillaz" out of my head in the first few listens. Some tracks just felt like stuff Damon would go on to tackle later under the moniker. However this album and Blur are far from what we would come to know. Tight grooves and riffs spice up the album in between the main chunk of the tracks. It's very easy listening with more to appreciate on each listen.

Surprised by this one. If you can look past the FM rock snore fest singles there’s a lot of experimentation on this album, particularly towards the latter half.

Sulky from losing the Britpop wars but making tons of cash in the process, they embraced American alt-rock. And heroin. But mostly alt-rock and came up smelling of roses. The uni-browed Mancs looked on. Best Tracks: Beetlebum; Song 2; You're So Great

Probably my favorite Blur album so far. Can't go wrong with Song 2. Couple other bangers. A couple "experimental" which were eh

Britpop was huge in the mid-90s and you even though the big bands all had their own distinctive sound, you could tell they were all Britpop. But something changed just a few years later with Pulp's This Is Hardcore and Blur's self-titled. It suddenly took a much darker, less optimistic turn, taking inspiration from not only the alternative music of the 90s, but also still the 60s they already tried to emulate, and the 80s use of synths and electronic. Blur's self-titled is changes its style to something interesting yet melodic, if perhaps a bit abrasive. Starts off with the Beatlesesque psychedelic "Beetlebum," then onto the parodic "Song 2". I was shocked when I heard "Song 2"; I grew up with the song and had no idea Blur wrote this until yesterday, but I did find the punk chorus, grungy guitar, and nonsensical self-deprecating lyrics pretty funny. As a general theme, I love the lofi sound, complemented by static vocals and distorted bass. I heard "On Your Own" with the synths and back vocals is like the predecessor to Gorillaz... I didn't even know Gorillaz is by the same lead vocalist. I give points to innovation, but I wasn't a big fan of a lot of the songs, especially in the latter half. The only thing I like about "Chinese Bombs" is the title reference to London Calling... too much distortion. My least favorite on the first side is "M.O.R." which sounds a lot like their former music, but also it's pretty generic. Another weakness is that it's not terribly coherent, switching between all sorts of styles that it's a bit difficult to keep up with. If you're into a lofi mood or want to pick out some great tracks, this album will do it. Otherwise, it's outstanding in songwriting, production, and innovation. Favorite Tracks: Beetlebum, Death of a Party

amazing production

Did not know blur was so deep. Of course song 2 was the highlight.

This is the breakup album, right? Not that it should be anthropomorphised to one person's unhappiness, obvs. (Later) No it isn’t. Apropos of nothing, time for a self-clarification of this wretched star system. Five stars. Indispensable. It is a privilege to be (re)acquainted with this masterpiece. Will be downloaded onto my device and listened to regularly. Four Star. A fine album. My impressions may be tainted by subjective memory muscle responses (on the whole, albums released between 1985 and 1999). At the least, a prompt to explore the artist/band’s back catalogue, get a sense of context. Or an excuse to wallow in nostalgia for a bit. Three Star. Serviceable. At the worst inoffensive, at the best well made but ephemeral. Every so often, a song or two give cause for closer consideration, but on the whole nothing here that will change any aspect of my life. Two Star. Poor/cynical/unformed. Like most music, it will mean something g to someone somewhere. I’m not that person One Star. Mum got her church group to buy a copy each. You know the Brian Eno anecdote about the Velvet Underground? Well, whoever made this album went to a Kenny G concert and was similarly moved. Poor us. Blur is a four star, even though objectively I think it might be a three. It was a big break from Britpop. In retrospect, they did a Radiohead before Radiohead. (Alburn, who is one of the most curious people in pop - a compliment) was all over Pavement and Dinosaur Jr. at the time.) Aside from the radio ‘friendly’ unit shifters here, some underrated classics (Strange News from Another Star - Bowie for the 21st cen., anyone?) Blur don’t deserve the opprobrium heaped on them. Yes, they were (are) precious. But never opportunistic.

Didn't realize that blur had more than "song 2" lost me a bit at the end, but overall a good experience

Damon building up to his creative peak but already at his prettiness peak.

(4.5) Blur have been one of my favourite bands since I was a teenager, so this album was always going to rank highly. Despite containing some of my favourite Blur songs on the tracklisting (Beetlebum, You're So Great), it's one of those albums I've revisited less than others. This has meant that I'm less familiar with its second half especially, missing gems like Look Inside America and Movin' On, so I'm thrilled to have rediscovered them with fresh ears today. Not for the first time, and far from the last time I'm sure, I find myself weak at the knees for Damon.

This album is great. Beetlebum and Song 2 are absolute fire. Also great hits like M.O.R. and Chinese Bombs. Looking at some of my other ratings, I don't think this reaches "perfect album" levels of greatness, but I do love this album a lot and probably listen to it just as much if not more than albums I consider "perfect."

Better than Definitely Maybe

In the middle of all the industrial noise, there is music that is actually quite good. It will be a four.

4/5 - couple of bangers but suffers from 90's cliche production

3.5/5. Good, unexpected. Usually, with this genre I feel it's hard to listen to, however, this album was rather enjoyable. 'Song 2' is definitly the most popular off this album.

A cool and mellow sound with notes of punk and darker energy. This was a good album.

Pretty damn good, but not completely captivating. Favorite track might be "You're So Great".

Woo-hoo!

I prefer Parklife. But Beetlebum is great.

Kind of surprised their 1997 album is on here. To me, if there is an absolute must Blur album to listen to it's 1994's Parklife or 1995's The Great Escape. Still, it's Blur's last great album. Beetlebum is a good opener despite being a little unusual in its sound and mixes. Song 2 obviously brings down the house every time but it's pretty unique for Blur. I guess they have some other pounding rock songs like MOR and Chinese Bombs, but more typical of their style are tracks 3, 5, 6, 11. And no Blur album would be complete without something like Essex Dogs (featuring more Damon Albarn speak than singing) - although I could do without it. You're so Great (track 7) feels more like one the Gallagher brothers would've recorded - but still a good tune.

Bit of nostalgia talking here, because I was super hyped for this album at the time. In retrospect some of - including the lead single - is kinda dull, but the good bits are still good enough.

Blur's eponymous record starts off very well with Beetlebum, an emotional and blisfully sexy tune filled with catchy guitar riffs, which is one of Blur's absolute best. The second track, Song 2, carries just the right amount of edge and raunchy vocals to make it a staple in the genre. However, the rest of the album can only disappoint after these 2. Disappointment is at its peak when I consider the awkward sound effects and distorted vocals on Country Sad, the annoying On Your Own, the seemingly unfinished Theme from Retro and the almost voiceless vocals on I'm Just a Killer. The distorted guitars on M.O.R, the ascending chorus on You're So Great, the ghostly piano's and guitar riffs on Death of Party are terrific though, so a 4/5 is definitely a fitting score.

Nie durchgehört. Gefällt mir gut, 'Essex Dogs' ist großartig. Eine englische Band.

Glad I finally listened to this.

Incredible record, a great band in a great moment

til blur is really fun

Great album

some version of britpop, i like the style and there are some good songs, and some classics (song 2) i really like the band and the distortion style

headbanging

Good stuff. Felt like the 90s again

More abstract than I expected. Song 2 is obviously a classic, but the rest of the album is definitely underrated. Not quite my cup the whole way through, and a little too punky/indie. But still solid overall. 3.5/5

Energetic retro FIFA music

Solid 90s rock.

Top top top! A réécouter

Gutes Alternative-Album. 4. Stern für das legendäre Song 2

A solid recommendation. This album is loud, gritty, and high energy. I loved the roaring guitar melodies and Damon Albarns vocals fit in with this band just as well as in Gorillaz. Top notch. Favorite song: Chinese Bombs

Beetle bum and Song 2 are both classics

Exciting, rock and still very blur

Britpop goes Rock.

It was pretty good. I’ll have to give it another listen when I can focus on it more and am not too focused on judging a speech and debate tournament. Favorite songs: Beetlebum, Song 2, M.O.R, On Your Own, Death of a Party, Look Inside America, Strange News from Another Star Strong 7/10

I could have been into this back in '97. Standout track is "Strange News From Another Star"
