Reviews (page 7 of 13)

Bowie in top form. Great one

Great album.

Today's album is the second of a trilogy of albums recorded in Berlin and known as the Berlin Trilogy. In the late 70's, Bowie and Iggy Pop spent a few years in Berlin, trying to get clean of drugs and alcohol, and that time turned out to be a super productive couple of years for both of them. After he released his first of the three albums titled Low earlier in 1977, Bowie toured with Iggy Pop, playing keyboard for his band. When the tour ended, he assisted in the recording of Iggy's second solo album Lust for Life, then regrouped at the recording studio with Brian Eno to record this album that same year. Most of the tracks on this record were composed on the spot in the studio, with lyrics not being written until Bowie stood in front of the mic! What a busy year, and it goes to show how much of a stellar musician Bowie was. The second half of the album, starting at the song V-2 Schneider is a huge instrumental number. It reminds me of outer space quite a bit, and is quite relaxing. I feel like it would be good music to meditate or do yoga to. Overall, a great, typical quirky Bowie album. Not my favourite album of his, but definately a gem! Favourite songs: Heroes, Beauty and the Beast, the whole instrumental second half (V-2 Schneider, Sense of Doubt, Moss Garden, & Neukoln) Least favourite songs: Joe the Lion, Sons of the Silent Age, The Secret Life of 4/5

Never been much of a Bowie fan, I think because his voice is quite different and music is not ur typical pop fare. Taking the time to go through Heroes has definitely expanded my appreciation and knowledge.

Probably one of his weakest.

muy buen álbum, no me esperaba tres canciones sin vocales in a row

very very very nice. first half is great and the direction change for the back half was unexpected but very very welcome. Bowie is phenomenal on this one and the mix and arrangement is excellent. best tracks: heroes, joe the lion, sense of doubt

As usual, this list is teaching me that I don't *love* David Bowie. I love the title track on this album, "Heroes" is honestly one of my favorite songs ever. Cheesy as it may be, I first heard it in that cathartic scene in Perks of Being a Wallflower. Basically a child's way of being introduced to it, but I don't care because it struck me immediately and I've played it incessantly since. I was hoping this album would have a lot like that, but there's not much else with that level of emotion and unforgettable melody. There's some sauce in that track that is impossible to replicate. Like "Low," I found myself enjoying the instrumental tracks on here more than those with Bowie on vocals. I don't know what to say, a lot of his stuff just feels generic-rocky. But there's enough on here for me that I'd say this is a great album. Hard to say which I've liked the most now, but the strength of "Heroes" elevates this one a lot. Favorite tracks: Heroes, Moss Garden, Sense of Doubt, Neukoln, Blackout. Album art: Quirky lad behavior. Bowie mid-voguing or something, I don't know. Not very heroic, but it's a cool shot. 4/5

First half was excellent then v2 Schneider was alright for atmosphere, sense of doubt was good moss garden and neukoln were so boring the the closer was a bit naf. It’s still mostly good though I just don’t like that kind of music much. 4/5

I prefer the early 70s albums, but this is very good. Like all the more experimental instrumental tracks.

Grew on me a lot as the day went on. Strong David Byrne vibes. Instrumentals drag on a bit too long for me though. Strong 3 to a light 4 on this one

It’s Bowie after all. Not my fav. Heroes and Sons Of The Silent Age are amazing 3.5/5

Not the best Bowie, in my opinion

The title track of this album is the song I listened to over and over when I first heard that David Bowie died. An awful day for the world. But yes, while it may not be his greatest ever, it’s still excellent piece of work from David. Definitely an album you have to listen to in one go to fully appreciate.

Jebeni Bowie. Pogotovo stvar "Moss Garden".

Not my favourite Bowie album (Bowie albums I love more: Low, Young Americans, Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Station, Aladdin) though it indisputably contains one of if not his greatest ever songs. In terms of the Bowie albums with two halves of pop songs and instrumentals, Low is lightyears apart for me on both fronts. That said, it's a peak Bowie album, and is spectacular in its own right. I just have to leave myself somewhere to go. Favourites - Heroes, Neukoln, V-2 Schneider.

Heroes is the first Bowie song I fell in love with and for that this this album will always have a special place. The first half is an absolute masterpiece but unfortunately, I don’t love the second half quite as much.

This instantly clicked for me. Contains the iconic song Heroes, as well as other standouts such as Beauty and The Beast, Blackout and Joe The Lion. I don't often listen to instrumental tracks, but I was able to immerse myself with the four ones present on this album (V-2 Schneider, Sense of Doubt, Moss Garden and Neuköln). They transition very nicely into one another and offer a unique ambient journey for the listener.

I love hero’s the song my fav

Bowie is always a fascinating artist to listen to because of how he reinvents himself. Not my favourite Bowie but I’ll probably listen again anyway

"Heroes" gets downright funky, to my inebriated delight. The less poppy sections are less well-developed, but I'm actually happy to see flaws in this case, the Trilogy reacting to form a compound of perfectly imperfect Bowie weirdness. This remains the easiest Bowie project to be fooled by with the title track. Anyway, "Heroes": glorious.

Classic

it’s not Low

Second album by David Bowie on this list and also second of the, so-called "Berlin Trilogy", after "Low". And while I think that "Low" was one of the best records I have listened to, out of almost 150 albums, "Heroes" was quite underwhelming and didn't offer the same mix of emotions. The concept of the record is similar - few positive and high energy songs, followed by more atmospheric and electronic-filled tracks. But last time we had many hits, songs that are great on their own, plus sounded great in the context of album. Here I can point out only the self-titled track "Heroes", which is a great single and somehow continues the road of the album trilogy. This time the instrumental songs didn't hook me in, they felt like a slog, even though there were nice moments with small guitar solos and melodies. Bowie's vocal is great as always, so no complaints there. Some people treat it as the best album in Bowie's career, for me it's a step back after wonderful "Low".

It's a magnificent mess. Sound and experience and the genius of Fripp in the background. But it's not complete.

Of course we're all familiar with Bowie, but there are only a small handful of records that I am intimately familiar with and "Heroes" isn't one of them. This album is big and ambitious, late 70s Bowie was really something. I find it a bit disjointed, but feel less so about that the more I listen to it. It's a really great album.

8/10, one of my favorite Bowie albums

As cliché as it sounds, everything he touches turn to gold. The charismatic and glamorous personality is more evident here than on "Young Americans". Whether it's good old rock, or Brian Eno's ambience and slick electronica, or even that weird oriental rock tune, it's packed with such tight stellar-ness that I enjoyed a lot. Quite ahead of its time for a 1977 album.

Paranoid pop with the wild likes of Bowie, Eno, and Fripp.

I don’t think it’s Bowie’s best album, but I like the chill vibe it has. Not a standout for Bowie but it’s good.

Been loving David Bowie lately, and this just made my love stronger

I think this is the album when Bowie said - Fuck, I can do anything, I can be anything. What an artist

Sounds like Brian eno took over on the second half of this album

Pretty good

David Bowie is so awesome dude. The first four songs of this album are just unbelievably good. Of course everyone knows 'Heroes', the first track 'Beauty and the Beast' is a very strong album opener. But for me, my favorite song is 'Sons of the Silent Age'. Just a magnificent melody and one of the best chord progression harmony combinations I've ever heard. The second half of the album is a lot different as Bowie transitions the album into a medley of instrumentals. I feel this half of the album is not nearly as strong but a special shout out to 'Moss Garden' as one of the most chill tracks I've heard. The album concludes with 'The Secret Life of Arabia' which brings back vocals and is a fine ending. I recommend this album, if only for the first half, it is worth it. 4.25/5

Proper relic of its time where tracks were intended to be listened to in order. Side 2 sort of slides off its chair with little instrumental vignettes and minimal, ambient atmospheric codas presumably to be enjoyed when whacked out on smack in a Berlin basement. Very good.

Having only ever heard the Heroes single, the whole album is not what I expected at all. 'Sense of Doubt' and 'Moss Garden' are so different to the Bowie I knew.

A proper successor to Low, except louder and catchier with a greater R&B and gospel influence. It's much more refined and confident, and the songs are fantastic: energetic, cold, and industrial with a strained voice filter. Excellent synth work by Eno, distinctive and on point with Bowie's style. First half is nearly perfect, although I had a couple complaints about "Joe the Lion" and "Sons of the Silent Age" (love the Beatlesesque vocals and cymbal crashes). Just like with Low, the second half is characterized by mostly instrumentals, but the ambient tracks don't match the energy and stick out poorly, especially coming back to the disco "Secret Life of Arabia." My favorite was the Blackstar-esque horns in "Neukoln", but yeah they didn't impress me as much as the Low instrumentals.

Listened

Mother killed this album

Fun, but not reaally my cup of tea.

david bowie

Brilliant, but knocked a star off for the instrumentals which I don't get

The instrumentals towards the end of the album really stand out. The difference between pop single Bowie and these album oriented tracks is unexpected for me as a casual fan. I love them.

Heroes Sons of the silent age Beauty and the beast

First review and listen to a full David Bowie album. Now as previously mentioned i am not much of a reviewer for albums so bear with me on that part.Previously i have listened to a few songs by Bowie with Heroes being one of them but never have gotten around to listen to a full length album of his. The album starts off strong with Beauty and the Beat down to Sons of the Silent Age. Tracks such as V-2 Schneider weren’t appealing to me so maybe a re listen could bring me around. the next two instrumental tracks, Sense of Doubt and Moss Garden change the style of the album with Moss Garden having a more tranquil feel to the album. Then tying into the next track Neuköln with has some solid guitar playing mixed with a futuristic background which i really enjoyed. The final track of this album, The Secret Life of Arabia, really changes the mood from the last three tracks with Bowie singing on the track and giving a catchy chorus. Overall i really enjoyed listening to this album and makes me want to explore Bowie more with other well known albums such as ZiggyStardust. 4/5

Glam, Pop, Rock, Metallic, Catchy, Anthemic, Experimental, Grand, Ambient, Electronic, Industrial, Art Rock

Can't resist me some David Bowie. Never listened to this one the whole way through before. The instrumental stuff was interesting but not really my thing.

Amazing album by one of the best artists of all time. I wish more songs were on the level of the title track, but that is an impossible goal to achieve any way.

Berlin-triologien, halv danse-rock, halv ambient instrumentalt,

Great voice

Thanks for Bowie

Love Brian Eno as a producer of ambient, less so for pop music. Bowie is doing his thing and I feel the ambient side comes out the better here. Of traditional Bowie songs Heroes is of course a classic and really saves Side-A for me. Patchy but the highs are very high - 3.5/5

Highlights: Beauty and the Beast.

Heroes is the 12th album by David Bowie and its an experimental art rock album. It expanded on the electronic, ambient sounds introduced on his previous album Low, and followed a similar structure as well of more traditional rock songs on the first half and the second half featuring mostly instrumental tracks. This album signified a period of growth for Bowie as a musician, but the reviews for Heroes were mixed. Some liked the continuation of ambient art rock, while others would've liked more traditional rock elements to have been used. Everyone agrees that the guitar work - performed by Robert Fripp - was top notch though. Additionally the title track has gone on to be one of Bowie's most popular songs. I think it was a beautiful album that showcased Bowie trying out new things and still being able to make something most people would love.

Favorite songs: Heroes, Moss Garden.

Perhaps the most iconic album from Bowie's Berlin Trilogy. It's great!

This album was released in October 1977. The title track was impossible to dislike and has over time become one of Bowie’s most popular songs. It’s one of 4 tracks on the album co-written with Eno & features Fripp on guitar. Six tracks feature vocals and four (most of Side 2) are instrumentals. For me, “Heroes”, Beauty And The Beast and Blackout are the standouts. These 3 & Sense of Doubt are the 4 tracks from this album included on the live double album Stage, which was released in September 1978 to coincide with Bowie’s 9 month world tour. I saw his first Sydney concert at the old Showground in November. He was in great voice. It was the music event of the year & felt a bit like the gathering of the tribes. This isn’t an album I’ve ever played a lot and having given it several spins in the last few days, I don’t know why. The production (Bowie & Visconti) is terrific. And it ‘s never boring - even the 4 consecutive instrumentals are full of surprises. I loved it.

I really love the Berlin-era Bowie albums, with their mix of krautrock, ambiance, new wave. Aspects of these records have inspired whole genres of subsequent music. I love the 'proper' songs on the first side (plus Secret Life of Arabia), all of which have Bowie in great voice. An old friend, Dave Chisholm, was a big fan of this ear of Bowie, and used to play this record obsessively. Joe the Lion was a particular favourite in that house. Is it sacrilegious to say that the instrumental tracks on side two are... a little weak? They feel like filler on a very quickly recorded album during a prolific period? While undoubtedly ground-breaking at the time, others have much more successfully followed the ambient/post-rock genre into much more itneresting places. These are ur-texts, but sktech-luike compared to what follows. Bowie has (successfully) distanced himself from his LA-based cocaine habit by re-locating the Europe, and in 1978 alone the had released 'Low', produced an album for Iggy ('The Idiot', also a classic), toured that record, recorded and released 'Heroes', then went back on tour again. Eno's influence is strongly seen on those instrumentals, plus the more experimental production choices, often as a result of using his Oblique Strategies cards. Robert Fripp, guitarist extraordinaire (who turned up for duty, claiming that he hadn't played in three years) played all his parts in three days, on songs he had never heard before. His distinctive playing is especially notable on the title track. I think he is the secret weapon that really lifts this album into something special. I am big fan of his work on 'Scary Monsters', which also shows how well his style suits Bowie's vocals and song-writing. I love and regularly play this album, although I confess I usually only play side 1.

Bowie a legend

The title track sure has legs. Too bad one can't say the same for the instrumental tracks that conclude the album. My hot take is that "Let's Dance" is a better Bowie album and this one is only here because of that aforementioned title track. But this is the album that finally made me Google "Did David Bowie really have different colored eyes". There appears to be some sort of consensus that Bowie had something called anisocoria, which means he didn't have different colored eyes, but instead had different sized pupils. You can clearly see that here on the album cover, but that doesn't mean Bowie didn't also have different colored eyes. It certainly seems like an idea he'd embrace to the point that it wouldn't have surprised me to learn he went out of his way to wear different colored contact lenses. That doesn't make Bowie a hero as much as it just adds to his continuous mystique.

the title track is amazing the first few other songs are good the end REALLY meanders

A tremendous title track and a bunch of spacey instrumentals. Interesting.

While not my favorite Bowie album, this one is still high on the list. It's such a departure from the earlier work of Ziggy. Great sound and rocking grooves drive this record.

Not my favorite Bowie album but still pretty good.

Must use headphones

Geweldig album, klassieker

Bowie is always good, and I like this Eno stuff at the B-side, but I think Low is better album. Okay, this one have Heroes, but it is only one song.

Great stuff. A little uninspired, but thats in comparison to ziggy stardust and the like so... 8.9/10

Love me some David Bowie. Not my favorite of his albums but great nonetheless

It was a nice album but I often fail to see the appeal with alot of Bowie's music, I don't know. Love the song "Heroes", though. Biggest hit on the album. But I don't get the nature or "peaceful" music in the second half of the album as it takes alot away from the album. 7/10.

Brilliant. Yet another album on Bowie's practically perfect 70s run. The title track is one of the greatest songs of all time. 9/10

A great album, especially the title track. Not sure what else to say. Really enjoyed the flow of the second side on this listen. Not Bowie’s best, but close.

He was a unique talent.

It never fails to amaze me how that second half is so damn good it's over before you know it. 4.5/5

Having not been much of a Bowie fan, this one caught me off guard. I enjoyed it. The balance of vocals and instrumental tracks are sonically smooth and enjoyable to me - unlike David's Ziggy period. 4/5.

Definitely another hidden gem. Some of the sounds reminded me of prog rock, but also jazz sound. Overall enjoyed and will like to listen more.

Really interesting album - I hadn't heard the second side before & it's very atmospheric.

I don't always love Bowie's voice, but this was mostly pretty great. The trio of instrumentals were interesting, especially Sense of Doubt.

Not Bowie at his absolute best, but still lots of good stuff on here.

Ok....its not as good as Low. .but its still great. Its an uneven experience but Bowie can do that. Is Joe the Lion a decent song. No. Does some of side 2 wash over you.? Yes. Fripp on guitar is brilliant. Title track is a colossus...most of side one is epic in its angular awkwardness...lots of side 2 give me "feels". Easy 4

Another interesting Bowie album that I probably need to spend more time with. Faves: Beauty and the Beast, Heroes.

4/25/2022 Today's Album: "Heroes" by David Bowie - With every Bowie album I listen to for the first time, I feel like I gain a new respect for him. The way how he displays his ability to make pop hits and then throws all of it to the wayside to make some crazy psychedelic shit is done seamlessly and is always so impressive. In this album, there is definitely a different vibe than on Aladdin Sane. With the first half of the album, it's your standard Bowie experience with a ton of strange production thrown into what are generally common and poppy genres. The opener Beauty and the Beast has a great chaotic energy and does a good job of welcoming you into the track list, Sons of the Silent Age is a really epic, yet sweet track where Bowie is singing very well and the effect on his voice adds to the performance a lot. The track Black Out is a great way for this first half to end. It's a really great track on it's own and the title hold significance as it becomes a literal black out for the album. This is because the next 4 tracks act as an extended experimental ambient sonic journey. Each track gives a different side to this sort of droning and isolating environment with squeaky saxophones and pianos with an effect to give it this booming and resonant quality. I really like the way all of it is presented and all of the tracks together serve as a nice break from Bowie's eccentric vocals. It puts on display his amazing production skills and experiments with a lot of sonic ideas without being unlistenable. The closing track The Secret of Arabia breaks the tension built from the last tracks with a really fun and groovy dance track. The vocals are nice and the band is playing really straight in comparison to much of this record. It feels fun, fresh, and is a great way to end the album off on a positive and groovy note. Despite some of the tracks near the beginning being a little too much and feeling a little claustrophobic, this album overall has an awesome sound and aesthetic to it. I love the way Bowie is posed on the album art and one of his eyes being dilated while the other isn't is a great symbol for the strange nature of the track list on this album. Listen to this track if you like ambient music or have like Bowie's work on other albums. Score: 8.5/10 Experimental, yet palatable Highlights: Beauty and the Beast, Sons of the Silent Age, Black Out, V-2 Schneider, Sense of Doubt, Moss Garden, Neukoln, The Secret Life of Arabia.

4.5/5 This one’s a grower for me. Bowie really gives you a lil taste of everything with this one, and I’m all for it 👍

It's Bowie. It's great. But it's also not my favorite.

Generally when someone gets labeled a "musical genius" it becomes a turn-off to me. I'm thinking of David Bowie, Prince, and Beck. It usually means only people with superior musical taste can truly appreciate them, and the unsophisticated masses just don't get it. Despite being part of those unsophisticated masses, I do appreciate David Bowie's unique creative vision, even if I've never been a dedicated fan. He was never boring and never rested on his laurels. This album is really interesting. Artsy and experimental yet unpretentious. 4 stars.

Pretty good esoteric and sparse tracks that I quite liked.

Not as great as Low, still great.

I thought this was pretty good. As expected, Robert fripp provides some great guitar work here, with a trademark tumbling-down-the-stairs solo being heard. The instrumentation is somewhat difficult to penetrate, do to the dominance of the vocals in the mix and the dense nature of the instrumentation, but it’s good. Side a contains some pretty solid Bowie songs, while side b is comprised primarily of ambient pieces, which were nice, and reminded me of German bands such as popol vuh (particularly moss garden) or tangerine dream (Neuköln) I feel like this is an album which would benefit from being churned around in my mind for a few days. Overall I’d give it a 3.5 to 4 stars. Generally strong, but not my favourite Bowie work.

This was good, and I expected that. It doesn't beat Ziggy Stardust (nothing will), but it is definitely better than most music.

It's Bowie, it's awesome

It’s a good album crowned with Heroes, one of the best songs he did. But the second half of the record is a bit odd with long ambient instrumental tracks.

very cooooool

spiky, optimistic through the gloom

Still a classic for a reason.

"Boy Thanks for hesitating" (Joe the lion) "Sons of the silent age Listen to tracks by Sam Therapy and King Dice Sons of the silent age Pick up in bars and cry only once Sons of the silent age Make love only once but dream and dream They don't walk, they just glide in and out of life They never die, they just go to sleep one day" (Sons of the silent age)

Beauty and the Beast is a killer start to this album. You’re immediately thrust into the eye of Bowie and Eno’s ambient creative art rock typhoon. You just know you’re in for an unforgettable ride. It’s weird, it’s passionate, it’s aggressive, it’s energetic but it’s ominous and foreboding at times too. Quite a ride, but it’s a solid album. I know there are a lot of Bowie entries on the list, he had his most prolific output in the 70’s, but this on earns its spot. I love Heroes, can never tire of that song. This isn’t my favourite iteration of Bowie, but it’s a damn good one.

The Secret Life of Arabia zuende geht. Eventuell bisschen zu all over the place, aber ich fands spaßig. 8/10

Will raus rennen und laut, voller Ekstase, rumschreien. (me and who??)

> Bowie used to tell everyone that we were his favourite group, and in the midseventies the rock press used to hang on every word from his mouth like tablets of stone. We met him when he played Düsseldorf on one of his first European tours. He was travelling by Mercedes, listening to nothing but Autobahn all the time. He's just like me frfr.

Great Bowie album. Mix between classic Bowie and experimental Bowie.

I already heard this album, it has one of a my favorites musics sang by one of my favorites artists ever <3

Heroes has just 1 song really

Other than the brilliant title track, I found that the 3rd of the Berlin trilogy doesn't have the same punch as Low and Lodger. Similar mix of pop singles and ambient pieces.

Super bon album, la deuxième moitié m'a agréablement surpris. Définitivement à réécouter.

Heroes isn't my favorite but I wouldn't turn it off if it came on.

Great Bowie, but uneven.

I’d actually never heard this album all the way through before. Really had me in the first half but almost put me to sleep after that

Not a Bowie fan in the slightest, but this slaps, not gonna lie. Better than Ziggy Stardust, the only other full album of his that I've heard. I would imagine that the more experimental instrumental break during tracks 7, 8 and 9 is a bit controversial, but I personally enjoyed it.

Bowie being Bowie, man

Half an album of grim impressionistic instrumentals, half an album of of-the-cuff vocals, unplanned until record was pressed. It shouldn't work but fuck me, it does.

a classic

Interesting to read how polarised the reviews are of this album. Personally, I love it - so evocative of an amazing period

I know the  Berlin trilogy has many die hard fans and Heroes is my favourite of the Berlin trilogy. Truth be told: I'm a bigger fan of the cocaine trilogy (Ziggy, Aladdin and Station to Station).  The sound in Beauty and the Beast is stylistically similar to what he did for a few albums to come. For example, it's similar to Scary Monsters. Bowie was looking for a certain sound from his lead guitarist. It wouldn't be accurate to say his guitarists all sounded the same but there are certainly some stylistic similarities between Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew and Earl Slick. They all had an avant-garde style to their solos and they all like to use the vibrato arm to make their long notes sing.  Side 1 is fabulous and is in the same neighbourhood as  the cocaine trilogy. Side 2 is a lot more instrumental. V-2 works for me but I get lost with Sense of Doubt,  Moss Garden and Neukoin. Are we sure he wasn't doing drugs in Berlin?

Ich bin ein Berliner. This is the pinnacle of Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy. It was a master stroke to have Fripp and Eno collaborate on this album. It starts off with a few weak songs but the title track is perhaps the best song of his stellar career, and surpassed only by the alt version sung in German. The 2nd side is very Eno influenced and the sense of Cold War angst and foreboding is palpable. In my view A sign of a true genius is an artist that can radically change their style over time to reflect or even lead the zeitgeist of the times. Bowie is one such chameleon, others that come to mind are Miles Davis and Neil Young.

Having just played Low, thought I'd play part 2 of the so called "Berlin Trilogy". Obviously the title track is the standout, commercial track but there is plenty to enjoy in the deeper cuts. Bowie was indeed a fascinating artist in every sense of the word.

Classic, but I don't think it lays a glove on a lot of top tier Bowie

Not as good as I thought, some weird stuff, very atmospheric. Brian Eno I assume

Excellent, classic album

Really good album overall. The 20 minutes of instrumental at the end wears on you a little but each of the instrumental tracks is individually good and the songs at the start of the album are all solid gold.

4.4 + The title track remains the closest example of a perfect rock song, with a vocal performance that's transcendent. There's also an Eno-driven stretch of instrumental songs during the second half that's on par with some of the greatest moments of "Low." If I'm being honest, I like but don't love a couple of the other tracks (e.g. "Sons of the Silent Age") but they certainly don't detract from the overall flow.

Aber jedenfall, Die Bowie-Stücke natürlich interessant produziert, fast schon wall (no pun intended!) of sound-mäßig, mit immer wieder interessanten/überraschenden Effekten etc.

David Bowie is fascinating and wonderful in so many ways, which of course includes his music. I love it when a musician or band continues to evolve and experiment throughout their life, and in very rare cases that musician still somehow sounds very much like, well, that musician. Bowie is one of those rare treasures. Regarding this album in particular, I had heard some but not all tracks before, and I enjoyed listening to them. Some of the songs made my brain go, "hey, I know that tune," then realize I don't recognize a song but rather as style or sound. For example, 'The Secret Life Of Arabia' reminds me of Talking Heads, a little bit of Blondie, and I'm sure countless other bands with which I am not familiar. This is not a knock on anyone; I don't get hung up on who did it first. I just think it's cool. Transports me to late 70s music and art and culture, or at least my fantasy of it. I don't care how far off I am in my imagining what it was like, I just enjoy it -- and I really have no idea as I was a suburban kid in elementary school when this music was made. Some of the tracks also sound like they could've been made this year. Almost futuristic, maybe? Like it could be a score for a Kubrick film. A few are a little too dissonant for me, but I can sometimes feel like that upon first listen of music that is a bit outside the "norm" or expectation I had.

It was pretty good look into history

A few tracks in and this sounds like a Talking Heads album with louder mixing. UPDATE: This was a great album, loved it!

Quite liked this. Some good bangers and not too much weirdness.

Really groovy songs, the Eno hijack on the second side is good too

I don't know what I just listened to but I think I liked it.

Loved the instrumentals.

Medio experimental

A classic Bowie album in my opinion, a lot like Low which is my favourite. Guitars sound amazing

Not my favourite Bowie album, but still good

Title track is almost too amazing for the album's good. It's a tale of two sides of the album, and I can appreciate it but I can only pay so much attention to it. But the experience was nice.

The end of the album was much more avant garde than expected. Love me some Bowie.

Heroes is obviously an absolute classic banger, the rest of the songs were good, but the instrumental stuff lost me entirely.

While I only really enjoyed Beauty and the Beast and Heroes from the first half, all the instrumental, ambient stuff in the second half was great! I've never delved that deeply into Bowie's albums before so this was a nice surprise.

All over the place, but pretty well done. 0RS

Feels weird not giving Bowie a 5 but I've never been a huge fan of this. 3.5 rounded up.

Rating: 8/10 Best Songs: Beauty and the beast, Heroes, Blackout

Very modern sound with urban and country parts. Generally optimistic feeling and upbeat. Timeless.

A great Bowie album, but unfortunately the genius of "Heroes" overshadows all other tracks. 8.2/10 Best Track: "Heroes"

Moss Garden - i think it brought my heart rate down 20 bpm The Secret Life of Arabia - sick bassline

Heroes is probably one of the best songs ever. Never fails to make me feel good. The rest of this album is broadly a disappointment though imo. Sad, could easily be a 5 star but not this time

Suprisingly radical

Another Bowie album of which I'm note quite sure why they chose this one. So far I only knew the title track though, so it was nice to hear some new (for me) Bowie. The first half is very rocky in a ahead-of-it's-time manner typical for Bowie. The synth-ambient tracks on the second half really caught me by surprise though. I really enjoyed Moss Garden on the ambient side, but still, the combination of a couple ambient tracks on a rock album doesn't really work for me. That and the lack of a brilliant, stand-out Bowie hit on this album makes it a 4 and not a 5 for me.

finally a good album chile

is it good - yes - do i like it - well not massively!

Intriguing album. The first half I enjoyed just slightly, (a few songs, and Heroes of course), but the second ambient part was very encompassing. I also liked the final song - Secret life of Arabia

Beauty and the beast Heroes Joe the lion Secret life of arabia Très bon

Great first half of the album but 2nd half not so good

A close second to the more experimental "Low" IMO, but still a rich and rewarding listen. Even Walmart's disgusting co-opting of the title track couldn't spoil this one.

Examples of heroes are:- Our Lord Jesus Christ, Kris Akabusi, Jade Goody, Michael Barrymore, Purple Aki, Captain Sir Tom, Jesse Lingard, SHACK, Rosie from Rosie and Jim, Jo Wiley's sister, Harvey Price and Sunshine.

Full of team gb spirit. Not shack. He's full of New Zealand lamb chops. Hates the Welsh, loves a kiwi

dying saxophone

a bit too chaotic, but I liked the style for a background while I work

Me gusta, pero sin tanto flipe

Wowed the back half. The first half was a tad boring, but I loved everything from Sense of Doubt on.

Really cool, full of tones and sounds that sound odd even today. Marked down for being a little meandering in places, but very strong overall

I really thought that my Bowie knowledge ran deep. And it does, but this is an album that I don't know well. No Bowie is bad, and all Bowie is better than most, but I don't connect with this one in the same way.

Mostly good, years without hearing it full throtle

David Bowie does ambient!? I've definitely listened to this album before, but somehow it escaped me that side B is just straight up Eno-style ambient instrumental loveliness. I actually like side B more than I like side A, even though "Heroes" is an absolute tune. (And weird to think that it wasn't that popular when first released!) Fave track - "Sense of Doubt" - pure mood! "Moss Garden" is gorgeous, though, too...

Really cool highs. Kinda boring lows. Overall, I’ll be listening again.

I mean the dude can write a song

Is it elevated or marred by its very odd ending? I wonder if I'd esteem it quite as much were it not for Howie's sainthood, though I definitely like it.

Thought it would be better

Great songs, but the song heroes is a masterpiece

1. Absolute banger song. Great start into the album. Lots of energy. 2. Loved it. 3. Amazing riff, love the subtle synth in the background. 4. Really nice, kind of psychedelic. 5. Dual vocals nice, instrumentation is strong. Guitar goes ham. 6. Amazing sounding piano, horns fit nice in the song. 7. Strange, but interesting!!!!! 8. Beautiful and really peaceful. 9. Sinister and chilling. Eerie horns amplify the effect. 10. Really groovy and chill. Best song on the album.

Classic Bowie.

Not my jam but I get it

A truly great musician-- a truly great (and weird) album.

<3 Bowie, an incredible release

Strong opening to the album including the legendary title track 'Heroes'. Tracks 7-9 ('Sense of Doubt', 'Moss Garden' and 'Neuköln') all went a bit weird before finishing on a high. Would listen again but might skip the typically odd Bowie experimental tracks.

I like David Bowie, some songs on this were good but it's not pure gold.

Funny thoughtful lyrics, little to no “music”

There's some killer tracks on this thing (Heroes, Blackout, Secret Life...), and some great ambient music on it too, but I'm not sure they work best all on the same album. I dig the sound of it, just not sure it all comes together the best.

9/10, better than Low. Iconic, great sounds, his best.

Bowie is a god

I rarely listen to full Bowie albums, and I don't think I'll return to this one any time soon

Good songs but they felt same-y

A fun product of the 1970s Berlin and Japan fever. Loved--conceptually--the V2-Schneider diss track. The whole album feels less revolutionary these days, though, and I had to remind myself the whole time how novel this was because I wasn't super stoked by the music itself. Favorites: Sons of the Silent Age, "Heroes," Moss Garden, Neuköln

It's okay. The first song and Heroes are incredibly good, but the other non-ambient tracks are a bit throwaway. The ambient tracks are okay, but I have to be in the right mood for them, otherwise I find them tedious.

We could be heroes, but just for one day. Like this album. Onto the next.

Another 3 star Bowie album. The title track is one of the best pop songs ever written, but the remainder is a mixed bag.

Not his best but still it’s Bowie

overrrated

Pretty good - not in the same class a Hunky Dory for me though - was torn between 3 and 4

Love Bowie, I don't know that all of his albums need to be on this list. This feels like an easy cut

One great song on a mediocre album.

Not my favorite Bowie album. Got kind of boring

WOOOW. JEEE! 4/5 D: I början typ nån high-tech Elvis som äntligen har hittat andra instrument än sina fingrar. Mot slutet började det hända allt möjligt. Mina över blev dock inte stimulerade tillräckligt. Rock and spin. 3/5.

If only the whole album matched the quality of Heroes. I was kinda disappointed by the first half (except for the title track), but I ended up enjoying the ambient soundscapes on Side 2... some of them almost sound like they belong in a video game. Pretty cool, but not what I was expecting from this album. Favorites: Heroes, V-2 Schneider, Moss Garden

Heroes is one of the greatest songs ever made. The rest is alright. That guitar solo in Blackout is pretty sweet. In fact, all of Fripp's guitar work in this is very good. But side two doesn't do much for me, even though I'm an Eno fan. There are nice sounds (especially in Moss Garden), but it's just not what I want from a Bowie record.

One of my all time favourite songs by my all time favourite and this only gets a three. It would be an easy 4 but it is really only half an album. I appreciate where it stands in the discography and why, but I would never just listen to side b

I can absolutely hear Fripp's exploratory chops. He brings a heavy, rock and roll feel to Bowie I hadn't paid attention to before. Track four, Sons of the Silent Age, brings the more traditional Bowie sound I expect when a Bowie track is put on. Great use of intergalactic, stellar saxophone. The heavy synths are interesting, and weave with the heavily effected guitar. V-2 Schneider is not the song I expected it to be. It's a weird one, but catchy. Definitely ominous. Second half of the album and holy mother of God, Byrne's influence is worn on the sleeve. Green Moss' orientalism aside, it's more listenable for me than the rest of the album. Sense of Doubt is the song to trigger the most emotional response on the album. It is overwhelming, consuming, and radiantly depressing. Nailed it. The closer of the album, secret life of Arabia or whatever is a swingy, Bowie filled tune. Fun, but just another Bowie song. Heroes the song is catchy, and I have a new appreciation for it contextually. Heroes the album is fun but definitely not groundbreaking. I'm glad I listened.

Some albums are all over the place stylistically but this one takes a HARD turn before coming back. This sounds super influential to modern music.

Not my favorite Bowie album.

Songs with such cringe lyrics, time locked music. Then shifts direction with Sense of Doubt and then Moss Garden sounding like Brian Eno took over. I liked the second half so I guess 50-50

This is just not the best Bowie album, the title track is good but some of the soundscapes going on elsewhere are borderline annoying. I like the direction it goes but it never arrives, in my opinion.

I enjoyed it. Maybe not as good as he others.

Ummm, what was the last half of this album? Moss Garden? I really liked the other David Bowie stuff. But I'm not jammin' to this one. But I'll give it a 5/10

Good, just not as good as I was expecting.

Outside of the title song and the closer, mother too great by Bowie standards.

Bowie has never been a favorite of mine but the songs I like are some of the greatest there are. Heroes might be one of those. This album as a whole is very meh to me. Most songs are okay and that's about it. But that single song brings this album up a whole lot to me. It might not get the highest score over all from me but I could listen to that one song over and over and give it 5 stars instead.

A couple decent singles, but for the most part I could take it or leave it.

Credit to Bowie for challenging conventional music, while still sounding interesting. I’ll choose several other albums over this one, but it’s worth listening to.

Yeah it was alright

Wanted to like this more.

There are some really good, classic songs on this album, but Bowie feels like a really iconic and important artist that I don't necessarily connect with on all levels. Some songs, yes, I love, but not all of them. I really need to be in the mood. Good album, but not my favorite.

I am only familiar with Bowie's singles and have never listened to an entire album until today. I think this is good, but pretty underwhelming for my first Bowie experience. Of course I'm basing that opinion off of the fact I've heard nothing less than how brilliant Bowie is for the past 48 years of my life. I know there are more of his albums on this list, so I haven't lost hope yet. I know there's a 5 star out there. The song "Heroes" is phenomenal, though, and gets all the stars.

Classic album. Low is the one for me in this Berlin trilogy.

Love Bowie. Not my favorite, but a good album

Beauty and the beast - 3 Joe the lion - 3 "Heroes" - 5 Sons of the silent age - 3 Blackout - 2 V-2 schneider - 3 Sense of doubt - 4 Moss garden - 2 Neukoln - 2 The secret life of arabia - 3

There's nothing I dislike about this album, but not much really makes me want to listen to it again. "Heroes" is pretty good. Moss Garden and Neukoln are unexpected and also pretty good.

A great beginning, but the back half is just too weird for my tastes.

Outside of “Heroes”, this was pretty subpar

This was really dissapointing. Maybe my expectations were too high, Heroes is a great song but the rest of the album felt so so dry.

Much more esoteric than I was expecting. This was my first ever Bowie album, so I didn't know what to expect. I thought it was pretty good.

Bowieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! This guy is cool as fuck. Heroes is great, Moss Garden is a random unreal deep cut that really stuck out to me idk why. Rest of the album is good.

Some of these felt like they were more meant to be enjoyed only while under the influence of certain psychedelics. I do like Bowie though and Heroes is one of my favorite tracks.

I liked it; it was pretty nice

it’s aight not my cup of tea

Pretty good, but it feels like 2 half albums jammed together. The first half is solid, and the ambient music in the second half is interesting, but it doesn’t really work together for me as an album experience.

Not my favorite Bowie album, still great.

Good but my all time favourite is Hunky Dory, this is a bit harsh

If it was all Heroes, it would be five stars, but it’s not.

Not my favourite Bowie album, but still enough within to keep me engaged. Much preferred side two to one, and obviously the title track is timeless.

I don't love this. The first half really works, lots of great songs and obviously the title track is just great. But once we move into the non-vocal tracks I start to question what this album is actually aiming for. Nothing here is particularly bad, I just find at points it's almost unfocused. 'Heroes' does take me back to the GOAT finale episode of TV, real ones know what I'm talking about. Fav Track: Heroes

Sympa!

It’s Bowie so I have to love it, right? I don’t mind it. I’m more of an 80’s Bowie fan. Never got the hype that places him on an u touchable pedestal. It’s aight.

Back in September 2025 I got my first Bowie album, Hunky Dory. At the time I proclaimed my confusion over why I'm not a fan of his music, as by all accounts I should be. I gave that album a 3, but expressed the hope that I'll find an album or two that I really like given how many there are on the list. So this is Bowie album number 2 (#341). It has my already favorite song of his in Heroes. It's a period of his music that I have never listened to. I like a lot of Brian Eno's other production work, so maybe this time... Not to be a contrarian, but aside from Heroes (still love it) and liking The Secret Life of Arabia, I totally preferred the instrumentals of side two to the rest of side one. As has been the case with his music overall, it just doesn't grab me emotionally and I've found it all very cold and uninteresting. I liked it better than Hunky Dory at least.

I liked the title song. But just based off of this, I guess I'm not a big Bowie fan.

It’s alright. One of those albums that makes a good listening experience, but individual tracks don’t have much replay value. Not Bowie’s best for sure.

Another Bowie album. Another chance for me to say that, although I appreciate the man, I do not love the music.

Another great Bowie album, huge massive hit songs on it, no surprise there. The highlights are “beauty and the beast”, “heroes”, and “the secret life of Arabia”. The only disconnect for me with this album is the atmospheric explorational songs that make up most of the album. It’s fun, I like the idea of just making something atmospheric and “vibey”, it just didn’t click with me, like it was pleasant I just didn’t adore it. Still a solid album.

Great to get to another Bowie album. This one has a lot of great experimentation on it and definitely sounds distinct compared to other albums I’ve heard so far. It’s certainly in a pop rock format but it does sound unique with a mostly cinematic second side. I’m looking forward to one day figuring out how tjis album fits in the “Berlin trilogy”.

Good but nowhere near his best.

Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Pretty familiar, I know maybe half the songs and I know the background of his Berlin recordings. The cover is iconic. How do I feel about this artist? Hello Bowie, I’m more familiar with his glam stuff than the Berlin trilogy but I don’t think there’s any Bowie that I dislike. First impressions before listening: This is so funny, I bought a Bowie T-shirt yesterday and this was one of the pictures on it. I actually said out loud “ it would be cool if I got Bowie tomorrow because then I could wear my new shirt while I listen” and of all the albums I got the one that matches the shirt! I think it’s gonna be a good day. Favorite track(s): Heroes Overall Thoughts: The first part of this album is great. I’m not a huge fan of the instrumentals, they kind of killed the vibe but that doesn’t mean it was bad music I just feel like I enjoy Bowie’s glam era a lot more.

I knew Heroes only going in. The rest was ok. The instrumental ones were unexpected but nice.

Listened to this as a teen, didn't like it so much. Definitely enjoy it now, especially the last few ambient tracks. What the hell was going on there? I demand more of it. 3.5 rounded down to 3.

LOVE "KEROES"! The album in its entirety... meh. But, I have never been a huge Bowie fan. Just not my taste, but I certainly appreciate his style and musical artistry.

I was surprisingly underwhelmed by this. I love Bowie, but a lot of the abstract, sound-scape-y stuff in the back half just sort of washed over me. I didn't dislike it by any means, and I'm not opposed to ambient music as a genre. In fact I find it can be soothing and nice to have on in the background if, say, I'm writing. It's just very hard for me to blown away by it. Given the immense reputation of this record, I sort of expected more. I felt this way listening to Low as well, so maybe I'm just not a Berlin Period guy?

Bowie is very hit or miss for me - mostly miss. This album stays true to that trend. Still, his misses aren't terrible. Side note: Why am I just noticing that "Heros" is in quotations? This feels like it might be a Mandela effect thing.

I like Low a lot, so I was surprised that this didn’t do more for me. I would rank at least 4 or 5 Bowie albums above this.

3/5 - I'm not deep into Bowie's catalog, and this didn't change that. I listened twice, and aside from Heroes, which I've heard a thousand times, only the V-2 song really caught my ear.

Thought I would love this album but it was a bit disappointing. The best tracks have strong tunes but other tracks meander and become unmemorable. There are far stronger Bowie albums.

Pretty good

Feels weird re-starting this journey with a very mixed album. Everyone knows Bowie and I was excited to see a familiar album title too. There is some interesting stuff here. The title track, Joe the Lion, and the instrumentals on Side 2 took me by surprise as I previously found them boring. Moss Garden in particular was dreamy. Weirdly, a lot of Side 1 was tough to listen. Really great guitar parts that I should like, but the production was shite. I get that maybe it's what the intention was meant to be, but it made a rough listen. Overall I can see why others may like this album, but I bet this is not the best of 8 albums of Bowie's on here.

Shermz - Yay this is more pop-y. I didn’t know that this guy sang Starman! 3/5

For me Bowie's music is still overshadowed by the pop culture icon that Bowie himself was. I guess you just had to be there to get it.

I found the first half almost impenetrable on first listen, with the exception of "Heroes" which is great. The ambient second half was cool and spooky.

I'm finding it difficult to rate this one. It's interesting, but almost a bit too diverse a selection of tracks. Some are fantastic, some I could really give a fuck about. I enjoy this album for the most part, but I feel like I don't quite get why it's so appreciated. After 2 listens, I'm going with a 3.5/5.

Some great some not so good.

It start very disruptive . A salad of rhythms. Lisergic. Canciones flasheras: Sense of doubt, Moss garden, Neuköln.

Cool Album!

Another Bowie album... And I’m still surprised by how often his records feel loaded with mostly average material surrounding one or two great tracks. This one follows that same pattern of front-loaded with more straightforward ’70s rock before shifting into more experimental territory that’s interesting, but not something you'd casually throw on. The highlights are obviously “Heroes,” and I also enjoyed the spa music of “Moss Garden.”

As a fan, I thought I'd never give one of his album fewer than 4 stars. Alas, Bowie is greater than the sum of his parts and this part, for us less artistic plebes, is too artsy fartsy for me. The instrumental track that is just... sound (?) lost me. "Heroes" is one of my all-time fave songs, but it's not enough to save this album. For me. A low-brow NPC.

Bowie, that's all. Again.

Could’ve been higher. Heroes is great. You may instrumentals.

Bowie <3

A challenging though interesting listen. It’s fairly inaccessible on a first listen - the single “Heroes” and “The Secret Life of Arabia” were the most easily digested. I also liked the experimental and noise poem of “Neukoln.” The rest was a little tough, and due to probably not wanting that much to listen to it again, im afraid I have to give the Duke a 3.

Other than heroes (all time classic), a bit bland. Enjoyed the instrumental pieces though!

Ultimately a few duds on here unfortunately Amazing artwork though

Heresy #503: I don't believe that a sizeable proportion of the people who claim to revere this record have ever actually listened right through it, let alone fallen in love with it. It does get interesting of course, and quite avant garde in places. Some Eno ambience, some Kraftwerkian electronics - but overall it might be one of my least-favourite incarnations of Bowie. Even the title track for me, although it's gigantic, somehow doesn't feel quite the peak of Bowie's artistic potential.

Heroes obviously a banger. Gets delightfully weird for the latter half, atmospheric, eerie. Good album.

Had some good Bowie rock n roll mixed in with some experimental stuff. Also a cut that presaged the early 80s synth pop with drum machines. Never was my thing but this was as interesting listen that deserves some further time. The title track "Heros" will always be one of his best.

Best Songs: Blackout Sense of Doubt

Bowie always takes you on a journey. Not sure how much I like the glam rock opening, but a few of the songs (blackout, moss garden) really hit. Neukoln was a weird one.

I LOVE early Bowie and glam rock Bowie. This album is neither and I’m sorry, I just don’t like it. Honestly, it’s a 2 in terms of enjoyment but rounding up cuz it’s Bowie.

Difficult to review from the perspective of 2026. I wasn’t born when it came out. Some interesting sounds and the obvious hit of the title track, but I doubt I’ll listen to this again therefore I can’t give it a high score. 2.5.
