Reviews (page 5 of 13)

Definitely thought I’d heard this before - and at the beginning was like yeah, ok, this is p good - but if I have, then I definitely didn’t remember the ambient turn this takes at the end. Very nice, I like it!

i mean... its just like me bait honestly. I do think "heroes" is potentially the best song of all time and its really to cool to me that brian eno... my hero had such direction on this album and the two before it. anyways i sometimes think bowie sucks cuz he was a genre hopper but he had really obscure taste to be honest... making a krautrock album in berlin in the 70s is just like the coolest thing anyone could ever do... and he got to do it with brian eno... come on... my only issue tho is a lot of bowie music is samey to me and i get a lil bored ..

Front-loaded but still great.

David Bowie is really bad, technically at singing. I don't really understand why Bob Dylan is the poster child for classic artists with bad voices. His is at least on key, Bowie is perpetually flat, that's almost his brand. People try to pretend it's just his accent, but you aren't really doing a good Bowie unless you're half a semitone flat on every note. Anyway, it was good.

Starting off strong. 3.5/5

The man himself. I love Bowie. Classics all around. I also really enjoyed the instrumental tracks.

Low better but much better than lodger. I love Heroes the song and also the the instrumental on the backend is v solid.

Always iconic, pushing boundaries, surprising that there was so much instrumental on the album!

Great album, obviously, but its second half was a bit weaker than its first. Favourite song was Sons of the Silent Age, despite Heroes being in the album.

Another banger from bowie

Heroes might not be David Bowie's best work but i still enjoyed it quite a fair bit. This one really finds it's mix between being both a typical rock out album from Bowie and leaning way hard into the art rock style especially with the last 3 songs. For the most part, this album was a really enjoyable ride. The guitars are distinctly as Bowie as i would ever want them to be and all the other elements of this album had that style too. I even enjoyed the more artsy songs on the album even if they were just 4-5 minutes of the same thing. I still think that Bowie has done better but this is still a really good album that is a very worthy addition to his lineup. Best Song: The Secret Life of Arabia Worst Song: Sons of the Silent Age

Not my favourite Bowie-album, but it is still very strong. More disco/synth-influence than I had expected.

This album deserves its place on the list. The title track is overrated, to be frank. "Heroes" was played a bit too much. I enjoyed the instrumental second half, which feels almost like a different record. The second song is a hidden gem. 4 stars for "Heroes".

8/10 Favourite: Heroes Least Favourite: Sense of Doubt

Another great Bowie album. A little darker and more industrial than previous Bowie albums. The long instrumental interlude of "Moss Garden" always throws me off a bit, but he more than makes up for it with "Heroes" Highlights: "Heroes" and "Blackout"

Yep, it was alright

This was my first experience listening to a full David Bowie album. I'm familiar with his hits, but didn't really know what to expect from the deep tracks. And man, is it weird in the best possible way. This album goes from Bowie rock (for lack of a better descriptor) and does a 90 degree turn into soundscapes. I thought I was listening to Blade Runner background music. And yet it didn't bother me for some reason. It's weird and out of place, but also not. And then he presumably said, "maybe I'll throw this Secret Life of Arabia track in here at the end just cause." I actually listened to this twice to make sure I did actually enjoy it, and yes, yes I did. 4/5

Not his best but some great songs. Gets a bit weird at end

What a wonderfully weird time

It's probably not Bowie's best album. But it is still great. The title track alone is probably worth 3 stars, and the rest of the album features some great instrumentals and production work from Brian Eno.

Underrated

Ganske bra, spesielt B-siden

Having the song of the same name pretty much guaranteed it 3. Just about enough other stuff I liked to make it a 4

Used to be my overall favorite Bowie album but over time it's slipped to being my least preferred of Bowie's late 70s output. The thing holding this back, if anything actually holds it back, is that V-2 Schneider is a wildly good instrumental track that perfectly synthesized the mood of the album but after its conclusion, the listener sits with some nice, appreciable soundscapes. This isn't so bad but on the whole, the Brian Eno compositions were more consistent and/or abrasive on Low.

Much more avant garde than I was expecting. Lush and full of adventure. I was reading up on this album and didn’t know how much Bowie had an appreciation for and friendship with Syd Barrett, but totally makes sense and I can hear that inspiration here.

Had a lousy start to the day, so it was nice getting something good and moody and evocative. I love his lyrics/vocals on this, and I wish the instrumentals took up less of the run time. It is pretty good ambient music even though that's not my thing. Hard to rate, ultimately a strong four point something. This is a good era but it's sandwiched between Station To Station Bowie and Let's Dance Bowie, which are my two favorite Bowies.

The second installment in David Bowie's Berlin trilogy is definitely worth checking out. 'Heroes', the title track is of course an all time favorite and the rest is at least interesting, with some phenomenal moments all throughout. Heroes is almost as good as Low.

loses a point because it's not Low

Has one of my absolute favorite songs of all time on it but didn’t enjoy the whole album as much as ziggy stardust which is a high high bar. Still a great album

Pretty good but not his best by a long way! The song Heroes is a masterpiece however and gets the album an extra star.

Classic album with relaxing vibes. I can find the good quality in production for this album but I didn't feel like it blow my mind.

An excellent album, really a work of art.

nice vibes, warm tones, I will listen again

I prefer Low I think but this album is great. Still think this list has too much David Bowie

There is a song or two that aren't my cup of tea, and that's the only thing that is keeping this from 5 stars.

This is literally Low but like 75% as good. Still a damn good album though. Heroes is probably one of the 50 greatest songs ever made that song makes me emotional every time I hear it.

I did not expect the back half of this album to be mostly ambient-type instrumentals and that did not bode well as the soundtrack to my fatigued commute home

When Bowie is good, he's good. When he's bad, he's schizophrenic and decides to end an album with instrumental music when it started with rock. But if I'm honest, there's nothing else I'd want or expect from him.

grading this one on a curve a bit - it's great but it's nowhere near as good as Low so I gotta dock marks a bit

Heroes follows a similar structure as it's predecessor, and my unpopular opinion has always been that this is a better album than Low. Both sides are better on this. The rock side contains some of Bowie's most sonically interesting material, with rhythmic songs that grind away and so many cool things going on at once. That includes his best song, the title track; that piercing synth that permeates the whole song and those beautiful lyrics ("cuz we're lovers, and that is that") build to an amazing climax. The second side is mostly ambient-adjacent electronic, bookended by a Kraftwerk-sounding song and a rocker to close things out. I like that ending - it makes the album sound more like a rock album with an ambient interlude and less like two albums smushed together. Overall it's not one of Bowie's very best, but the highlights are enough to push it to a 4.

From the first note, it's very clearly Ahead Of Its Time. Or maybe it's out of time - a mix of everything from the past, present, and future of 1977. That doesn't make it good, but does make it prescient and sprawling. Of course, Heroes is a GREAT song and it settles nicely into this album. The closer I listen, the less I like it, but the more barely tuned in I am, the more I like it. Weird one. I was prepared for Eno's bullshit at the end, pretty good. I think I was too harsh on Low, but it was early in my 1001 albums career. Like it, I think this album might be more than the sum of its parts.

Really good songs. Weird sequencing.

I enjoyed this album! Lots of elements that made this sound pretty ahead of its time. Sounds more 80s than 70s for sure. Pretty solid.

Heard it before. This album really takes you to Berlin in the 70s (I say although it's something I've never experienced). Call me weird but Sense of Doubt is one of my favourites from the album 4/5

It's Bowie. What more is there to say?

It's funky, in a fun 80s kind of way. David Bowie will always have a special place in my heart and this album surely set me on a fun journey. We started off a little disoriented with Beauty and the Beast (was thinking Disney after reading an article), so had to listen to it twice to properly enjoy it. My favorites are 3 out of the last 4 songs of the album. I love instrumentals and those three songs were such a fun ride to keep me focused on my work.

Is it weird that the synth-instrumentals on the back half of this album might be my favorite part of it? Of course the title track, Heroes, is iconic and a great song. But the things that made me sit up and take notice were Sense of Doubt going into Moss Garden. Ah, and Neukoln continues it. I'm sure these are not the most popular tracks, but I'm really enjoying the the soundscapes they're creating. I also enjoyed The Secret Life of Arabia.

The surprise here is that it's the instrumentals that I really like, which is the opposite to what I expected. Apart from the title track I am not fond of his vocals, he has that lack of discipline whine and the recording of them has too much echo and effects, it's just unbelievably pretentious and annoying, stopping me really here any song or tune, like vocal masturbation. What I like is very good and it would be churlish to give it 3 given how amazing the song Heroes is and how much I like the instrumentals, so 4 it is.

I enjoyed this Album especially the song Heroes

Bowie does so many small things so well. There’s so much going on that you have to listen hard for but the little things are what make the songs. The Berlin trilogy is some of the coolest rock music I’ve ever heard.

Iconic and a bunch of fire songs like Heroes

So good, not nearly his best, still 4 stars

Weird, fun, into it

Bowie never misses.

Great album. Love the “Berlin trilogy”.

yeah, Heroes is good, but have you heard that Weird Shit at the end of the album????????

I only knew the title song so this was much ODDER than I was expecting, but cool! I especially liked "Beauty and the Beast" and "Blackout." Probably would have been a 4.5 if not for the streak of spacy noodly instrumentals. Even those I liked better than *most* spacy noodly instrumentals, but lord they did go ON.

He was so good he released two great albums in a single year. While this one is usually considered the less acclaimed one, it still produced one of his most famous hits in Heroes. While I have listened to Bowie's Berlin period of music, I have not heard this album, and I enjoyed the ambient tracks at the end. He simply made all kinds of great music in the span of a decade.

Weird weird album. Lots of experimental things all throughout, the banger that is the title track, and then 3 instrumentals all in a row at the end. But I guess that’s to be expected for Bowie. And also, just like Bowie, this is another one of those albums that the more times you listen the more it grows on you. I really wonder at times how this man was the cultural phenomenon that he was because his albums are not very accessible haha. Like most of his stuff that at least I have experienced is just plain strange. Good of course, but strange.

The trick of Low that manages to shock repeatedly is the omissions, the caesuras, the moments of unexpected less. In comparison, the songs of "Heroes" are much fuller. More complete and, in that way, conventional. Whereas Low shuddered into instrumental abstraction, the collection of wordless tracks on Side 2 of this album suggests an absence of ideas: failure to complete an album of more conventional songwriting and repeating the model of the previous record. Absence of ideas is the enemy of absence as idea: when you have no ideas, you throw everything at the problem. Bowie, Eno, Fripp, Visconti, Alomar, Davis, Murray, and Maass are massively talented and a lot of what they throw sticks. It is still, after all, an incredible record. But is also after Low. And, after hundreds of listens, the only thing that still surprises me every time is the second iteration of "Get me to the doctor!" on Blackout. The first iteration is followed by a slew of verbiage, but, after the second... nothing, no vocal, just forgotten rhythm section. Unexpected less. Four stars. One star absent. 4 No matter how familiar this album has become over the years it is difficult to judge “Heroes” without thinking ‘Low’. “Heroes” side 1 songs are musically leering and thick with lyrics - grand, only that Low’s side 1 seems to achieve more impact with less. Sound and Vision is a masterpiece of concision - a paragon of pop music; the title track of “Heroes” has its bloviation fatally underlined by the release of a single edit which is not only entirely sufficient at almost half the length but is on a par with Sound and Vision in its sublimity. Then “Heroes” ambient side actually has less musical detail than Low’s and yet feels heavier. Moss Garden’s 5 minutes go on far longer than Warsawa’s 6 1/2. With all that podium-placing out of the way - the conceit of a ‘pop’ side 1 and an ‘ambient’ side 2 aside, these albums really aren’t alike. And, by any other standards, “Heroes” is really very good. I’d like to praise it in more detail but I have to go listen to Low now. 3.5/5

Yeahhhhhhhgh. I had only heard Heroes before, the rest of this was moodier than I was expecting but real good.

Outside of the stand out title track, there is much to love on this record from the experimentation and gorgeous guitar work by Fripp.

Oikein kivaa musaa!

Not my favourite of the Berlin albums but still a very enjoyable album.

Pretty phenomenal! The weirdness of the second half was fuckin awesome!

Theatrical and effervescent. Big The Wall/Shine on You Crazy Diamond vibes mixed with The Phantom of the Opera.

Judging only by side A, this would've been another 5/5 for Bowie. However, the instrumental tracks on side B are hit and miss for me. They're good, but they really break the flow of the album. This is still a really strong 4/5. Bowie was incredible!

I love getting the chance to revisit David Bowie. I have no idea what he was thinking on those first two tracks, but the rest of the album is a tour-de-force. High Point: Most of the album Low point: "Beauty and the Beast", "Joe the Lion"

Creative guy

It's Bowie. It's awesome! Not much to say. I'v listened to this album many times before, but didn't think much about the instrumental tracks. Very cool.

**** It‘s Bowie! Like it

Bowie rules, everyone knows its true. This is a great record. Heroes is an iconic song and the highlight of Side 1 - although Sons of the Silent Age harkens back to classic era sounds in an enjoyable way. Side 2 is where I think this thing really starts to sing. You get some lovely ripoff Kraftwork, a modern-ish German Expressionist soundtrack, pan-Asian sounds and a moody track reflecting urban unrest before an anthemic closer. Big ups to Eno as well!

It’s typical bowie for the most part, maybe less iconic than ziggy stardust, but the ~3 song stretch of atmosphere was really captivating for me in my opinion. And all that into secret life of arabia makes it click SO much more

Probably the more accessible of Bowie's Berlin Trilogy, mainly because Side A has more of what you'd expect in a pop song structure. Not all of Side A works for me (Joe The Lion is maybe the weakest track here) but you get some real winners in Heroes and Blackout. However, Side B is the stuff that really elevates the record. Some fantastic instrumentals, and maybe a bit more cohesive than Low (though that remains my favourite of the Berlin Trilogy)

Really cool, although I don’t love the title track. Not the greatest Bowie, but it’s still Bowie.

David Bowie: Had sex with two underage girls. Accused of sexual assault. Made comments lauding Hitler and fascism.

Berliini-trilogian mielestäni se eniten luukutettu levy! Tykkään muistakin mutta Low ehkä oma suosikki. Tyhmähän sitä olis jos ei tästä tykkäisi. Neljä bongoo selkeesti. Hienostuneempaa Bowie-osastoa. 4/5

Erinomainen platta taas Bowielta!

Like any good Davie Bowie album, it's got some strangeness tangled in with the rest of his more "tame" music. Once again I'm surprised that this is the Bowie album selected out of all his other albums. Personally I think Ziggy Stardust or Spiders from Mars are better albums. A great listen nonetheless!

fun and super funky. didn't love the instrumentals. opening track is a certified banger.

this might be one of my favorite bowie albums on this list (though it's no ziggy stardust). heroes is a massive tune, the opener is great, and for once i actually enjoyed david's weird genre explorations toward the end. favorites: beauty and the beast, heroes, sense of doubt, neukoln, the secret life of arabia

An awesome album. With songs that still fresh to this day and a experimental part to the end. 9/10

Day 5 Bowie a big gap in my knowledge, only knew the title track, listened to it several times today, liked it more every time, a great sign. 8/10 Highlights Heroes Blackout Secret Life of Arabia

Quite good - I feel like smarter people than me have probably written loads on Bowie's orientalism and while I have some thoughts and feelings I'll let it slide given the time frame and the technical skill in his music.

Would be a 9 if allowed! Heroes is one of the greatest songs ever written, especially the 6 minute album version which allows the tension to build and build. The rest of the album is some of the most experimental in Bowie's discography, heavily influenced by Kraftwerk, krautrock and avant-garde jazz. Beauty and The Beast, V2-Schniederand sons of the Silent Age are wonderful tracks. Gets very out there towards the end with the experimental and dark Moss Garden and Neukoln.

It wasn’t really my thing

Solid album. Some experimental tracks that I didn’t need.

Great album

I wish Wallflowers hadn’t been my first exposure to “Heroes”. I enjoy the entire Berlin Trilogy. Almost a 5 for me.

Kinda liked this, classic Bowie at the start then into the Eno synth mode by the end.

Sitting right in the middle of the two best albums from the Berlin Trilogy it's like most middle children not as good as the other two but still unique in its own right.

Half rock album, half art project. All excellent

Love it! Own It.

So-so start gets better towards the end, the instrumental songs make it on the upper end of a 3.5 so its a 4 but a very low 4

Haven’t heard almost any of the songs on the album, surprisingly, they weren’t what i expected, many of them where just musical with no singing. It made them very interesting, a bit uncomfortable and unsettling but I did enjoy them!

Do you think shagging Mick Jagger gave this guy magical powers

This was better than Low. I’m still not a fan of the instrumental stuff but overall a much better album!

I really really didn’t like the start of the album at all… though it definitely made up for it in the end! I can’t tell you if I absolutely love or hate this album… all I know is Moss Garden is absolutely amazing! I do not understand how a song like that with no words can be conveyed into so many! But then again the start didn’t have me! I don’t think I would relisten to this album but I will be relistening to Moss Garden!!

pretty good album. feels similar to 'low' in the sense that there is a more rock-ish half and then a more ambient half. the title track is great, and there are some other great tracks - really i like the entire first side of this one. the second side can be a bit dull in comparison. still interesting in its own right, but not something i would go out of my way for, unlike the first side. because of this dichotomy, it feels like it lives somewhere in-between a great first side and an alright second side.

So weird, so good. I love it. Those few instrumental tracks near the end were *chefs kiss* Fave song: Heroes Honorable Mentions: Joe the Lion, Blackout, V-2 Schneider, Moss Garden

David Bowie is insane, the instrumentals are great and the vocals mix so well. Favourite Song: Heroes Honourable: V-2 Schneider

Endless soundscapes don’t interest me at all. Good for studying I suppose. The rest of the album took me a minute to get into but on the second listen I really enjoyed it.

Nothing bad. Everything felt good, but nothing really called to me (except title track)

I enjoyed this thoroughly as there was just enough fun weird Bowie stuff in the beginning before becoming a great Brian Eno album at the end. And Heroes, the single, is a great song anyway.

Bowie is a weird dude who makes weird music. Solid album of spacey tunes. Rounding up a whole ⭐️ because Heroes is a fantastic tune.

Yea it's pretty fucking weird....but quite normal for a Bowie album. "Heroes" (the track) is an all-timer, for sure. Love the last 3 ambient songs with Brian Eno's fingerprints on them, but feel like they don't totally fit? Still about a 3.5 or 3.75 in my book.

So much cocaine went into the making of this album. I love him, but this is not my fave. Still fun.

Beauty and the Beast - Great disco feel. Joe the Lion - Love the backing vocals, cool beat. "Heroes" - Reminds me of Oasis in a way, Synth ties it together. Sons of the Silent Age - His accent fits in well, Good for a psychedelic ish tune. Blackout - Creative drums, my personal favourite song on here. V-2 Schneider - Solid song, sax kind of carried. Sense of Doubt - Ominous, the deep and heavy piano helped but it isn't the best of songs. Moss Garden - These instrumentals are starting to bore me, it is relaxing though. Neuköln - Sax is nice, I miss vocals. The Secret Life of Arabia - Finally vocals!!, I enjoyed the bass in this one. Great for my first impression of David Bowie.

Heroes, the title track is just an amazing song. I've always loved that song from Bowie. I'd never heard a lot of these tracks, Black Out is also good. I love Brian Eno as well and I can hear his influences for sure on Moss Garden and Neokoln. Definitely a strong 4 for me.

Title track is a classic. The rest of the album isn't as memorable, but it's really strong proto-New Wave. I tend to run hot and cold with Bowie's music, but this was solid throughout. 4 stars.

I was gonna give it a 3 but the song heroes is so good it bumped up to a 4.

first 3 songs are incredible then it goes a bit weird but it's all still great

A remarkable record, Bowie displays his creativity and musicality throughout this record. It's ambitious, innovative yet cohesive. Musically it's excellent, full of ambitious compositions and bold ideas, the instrumental run from "V-2 Schneider" to "Neuköln" is Bowie and company at their boldest, building atmospheric and very expressive landscapes. Fripps' guitar playing is excellent, Eno's synths are super rich and the rest of the band are on point too. Bowie is of course the most remarkable here, his vocal quality and delivery are as great and excentric as ever, and he's also the driving force musically, with great sax lines, keys and other instruments, including a koto. Lyrically it's very diverse and quite ambiguous, but Bowie still delivers powerful and alive vocals. In terms of songs, it's difficult to pick because they're all excellent in their own way. "Heroes" is the obvious standout as it's by now one of Bowie's most renowned songs. "Beauty And The Beast" is super catchy and fun too, and a great opener. From the instrumentals, "Moss Garden" was the most remarkable for me, the koto that Bowie plays along with the synths make it such an eerie and atmospherically rich track. Finally, "The Secret Life of Arabia" is a superb closer, more rock oriented and more lively. Overall, it's a superb album. While it takes some processing mostly due to how innovative it is, and it's certainly not your average Pop album, it's a very rewarding project after a couple of listens, and showcases Bowie's talents, particularly his creativity.

Timeless.

Bowie at his artsiest, not my favourite, but still great

Good album, Heroes is the standout track here with Robert Fripps iconic riff

A bit confusing but beautiful. I’m not sure why so many songs were instrumentals but I enjoyed them. More unique and inspired music from Bowie. Most of them were totally new to me and I was grooving.

Not the best Bowie, but...interesting.

The unusual instrumental tracks were a welcome addition to this album, including electronic sounds and some unexpected instrumental choices. His songs are always creative and have unexpected twists. This album was definitely way ahead of its time.

Finally! My first Bowie album of the challenge! Heroes (the song) is my favorite Bowie song and one of my favorite songs of all time. The album itself is very good too, but man that song is something special .

ja conhecia

My hot take is that this is by far the worst of the Station to Station/Low/This trilogy. I can't get myself to care about the Eno noodling back half when I could literally just listen to Eno do it 10x better on his own albums. The two singles and closer are peak Bowie, though - Heroes is a top 5 song OAT on every single day of the week. 8.5/10

I thought of this as a slightly more mainstream counterpart to Low, with the art rock first half and ambient second half Here the second half is a bit less eery than Low. I like it more than I remember (haven't listened to the album in a few years), I especially liked Moss Garden. The koto backed up by swirling synths and the occasional rocket sound (?) is nice and calming, the Japanese sound probably appeals to me as a dumb weeb as well Of course everybody knows the title track I like that they album ends on a bit of a more energetic note with Secret Life of Arabia, it kind of helps tie everything together a bit more than Low, where both halves feel very clearly segmented Probably battling with Station to Station for my favourite Bowie albums cover

On the strength of the title track ALONE, this is one of Bowie's better albums. I get the idea of the instrumentals, and putting them one after another gives the sense of a unified thing. But I always felt of them as filler, a little noodle-y. Even so, this is definitely one of Bowie's best albums although not my favorite, that would probably go to "Hunky Dory." That's the beauty of Bowie: EVERYONE has a different favorite album. Top tracks: "Heroes," "Beauty & The Beast,"

Not my favorite Bowie album, that's for sure. Still solid, but it felt a little manic. Beauty and the Beast and Joe the Lion were both energetic but a bit all over the place. The title track is the crown jewel for sure, though it seems different from those two tracks that come before it and the other two after it on side one - Sons of the Silent Age and Blackout. Now, those two have a more consistent style within the song, which is a plus. And then side two goes mostly instrumental, which I wasn't always sure what to do with. I think V-2 Schneider is really strong, probably the second best song on the album. It starts of spacey but then gets funky. Sense of Doubt to Moss Garden to Newkoln are spacey throughout. Not bad, and he segues pretty nicely from one to the other but I felt like I was looking for something more. And the last one in that sequence started to feel overdone. The middle one was the best. And then he finishes with The Secret Life of Arabia, which felt like a better fit for side one. Like I said, it felt a bit manic, or maybe disjointed, though there were a lot of strong individual moments.

Ganske bra, spesielt B-siden

I haven't listened to much Bowie in the past - definitely not a full album from start to finish. This was vibey and fun. There was stuff on here that I definitely liked better than the main song "Heroes." Would listen again - and will try out some more Bowie. 4/5

Finally a Bowie album I can get behind. Most songs on this were great, and I really liked the more experimental second half of this project. Fave songs: Heroes, Beauty and the Beast, and Moss Garden.

Alright, let's talk about David Bowie's Heroes. For me, this one's a solid 4 stars. Because, come on, it's Bowie. I definitely like this album a lot. It's got that classic Bowie weirdness and brilliance all over it. The title track, "Heroes," is an absolute masterpiece – a truly great song that still gives me chills. But here's the thing: while I appreciate it, this isn't my go-to Bowie album. When I'm looking for a deep dive into his catalog, I usually land on something else first. It's not that it's bad, not at all, it's just that his discography is so vast and amazing, and some others just resonate a bit more with me personally. Still, it's a monumental album from an iconic artist. It showcases his daring spirit and willingness to push boundaries. Even if it's not my absolute top pick, it's still a fantastic listen and an essential part of his legacy.

Loved it. Never given this album a listen before. Always Ziggy stardust and that era of Bowie. Loved from the song Sense of Doubt onwards. Will be adding this to a more regular listen

We can be heroes if we PrEP

Title track is legendary. The long instrumental interlude towards the end is also pretty cool

It's pretty average but Heroes is so good that it gets an extra point.

4 Stars. It plays better as a full album than single. I’m starting to appreciate his Berlin albums. A couple of good instrumentals.

No comment needed. Hero.

Solid album Standout songs: Beauty and the Beast Black out The Secret Life of Arabia

i liked the ambient part best i’ll say it. thank you brian eno

👍👍

It’s probably impossible to judge this album solely on its own merits given that it produced one of the greatest songs ever written in recorded history. The rest of the album is on par with Low, though perhaps a little less cohesive. The ambient section flowing from “Sense of Doubt” to “Moss Garden” and “Neuköln” is a totally new step for its time, and Fripp’s guitar is a breath of life to the work Bowie and Visconti had been up to prior. It’s an odd duck but it grows on you, even if it’s not my favorite Bowie.

alltime great song followed by some brian eno trolling what could be better

Classic album, and a great one to start this challenge. This was my introduction to David Bowie.

I think my fave Bowie album.

Classic but not perfect. I love instrumental music, and these are good instrumentals. But it’s so strangely weighted by sides. That's not what I want in an album.

Impressively innovative

It’s a David Bowie classic. I’m probably most into the instrumental part of the album. But the title track is hard to ignore. David Bowie is a great artist who has evolved and pushed boundaries throughout his entire musical career. Personally, I prefer his more recent albums.

More albums where the first half is songs and the second half is ambient, please!

I really like Bowie but I don't have a very deep knowledge of his catalog. One thing I've been surprised to discover lately, first through Low and again here, is how much I enjoy his instrumental pieces. Like "Neuköln" - a great track. I'm hoping there's at least a little more like this out there waiting in the parts of his discography I've yet to explore.

Shockingly contemporary in sound, with some tracks fitting in just as well if you told me they were 2025 releases (guess that's why he's considered timeless). The back half of the album felt more like a score to a film I wasn't watching, but I can appreciate the experimentation and artistry. With that, there was a bit less to sink my teeth into -- BUT there was no formulaic nature to the songs a la Hunky Dory. This is a bit more of a 3.5 (and the first Bowie album was really a 2.5), but a notable step up from the other Bowie albums reviewed so far so I'll round up.

A lot of experimental sounds that are purposefully off-putting. Good tunes lurking underneath it all though, dragged down by "joe the lion" and similar silliness

While there are some incredible songs on this project, the contrast of the first half of the album having vocals versus the latter half having no singing threw it off for me. The closer, while it is great, does not close the album very well. That being said, some of the instrumentals are great and the first half is amazing.

Solid 4

damn i was JUMPSCARED by this album cover HE FINE HE FINEEEE other than that it's good-beauty and the beast and heroes SLAPPED but i didn't rly like the experimental stuff 3.5 stars but he's hot so 4

I'm not a fan of Bowie and at first this album did little to dissuade that despite it's lofty reputation, but as it went on I got drawn into it's varied range of tracks and the level of innovation and experimentation. It probably helps that I am a fan of Eno and some of these tracks just sound like they are by him, but overall this was a pleasant surprise.

I love any 70's Bowie. 'Heroes' is the clear standout song that slightly overshadows the rest, but I enjoy everything here. While I like the Eno soundscapes in the back half of the Berlin trilogy albums, on this one I do wish it blended together with the rock songs.. Often I'll only want to listen to one half or the other.

Lovely classic

The title track does a lot of heavy lifting. But still a solid Bowie album. 3.5 stars. I’ll give it a 4.

It was fascinating to get this in the same week I had two Brian Eno albums (Here Come the Warm Jets and Before & After Science) – it's striking how much this sounds like them. But then Bowie's openness to new influences and collaborators is part of what kept him interesting - even Black Star is clearly the work of a man who has heard To Pimp a Butterfly.

Bowie was the closest of what we get to a musical god. This album is great, but he has many better ones.

As always with Bowie ... pop-art in musical form.

Good intro to David Bowie, could have went without the instrumentals towards the end though.

Rating: 4/5 | Favorite Track: "Heroes" --- I want so badly to rate this higher -- the title track is by far my favorite song of all time -- but I don't like the more electronic ambient side of this album as much as the album before this, Low. Still, the front half is amazing.

A hallmark of Bowie's career was his ability to keep reinventing himself. This album falls pretty much in the middle between those early harder rock hits that I still like the best and his later, more commercial pop-synth mega-hits that took him to a whole new level of superstardom and brought him an entirely new generation of fans. But even in leaving one phase behind on his journey to a new, he was writing classics like "Beauty and the Beast" and "Heroes." Just a truly singular talent.

Some sonic diversity but a surprising lack of radio singles

Lots of good songs, then it got really spacey.

so peak?

Þetta er Bowie svo auðvitað erum við að ræða snilld. Fannst fyrstu 4 lögin fyrir utan Heroes svo busy eitthvað. Gat ekki komið mér almennilega í gírinn. Soundscapið í seinni hálfleik snilld.

I liked this more than other David bowie. Honestly if this album were the full instrumental songs it would be a 5 for me.

Classic album from his most iconic era. You can really hear Brian Eno at work here if you listen to this after listening to any album he produced from the time. I like the touches by Eno and Bowie's own more conventional songs here. The two don't really mix, but they intertwine and keep the album fun to listen to. I really like this one, although I think there are a few better Bowie albums than this. It doesn't have as many stand out moments as Low and Station to Station.

I like David Bowie a lot. This isn’t my favorite album of his, but it’s still full of forward thinking (1977!) and range.

Classic Bowie. I love this guy.

As a whole yeah, it's not as good as Low. But god damn I love the titular song, I think it may be my most listened to song on Spotify. I don't think the rest of the album is bad but Heroes is definitely doing a lot of heavy lifting here

The first half of the album is honestly iconic, and I really enjoyed it. The second half was less pleasant to listen to. I can see why it is considered so highly influential.

3.5 not of the best from Bowie, despite the amazing "Heroes" song

Banger

Love this Bowie Album. Not the essential but up there.

Not my favorite Bowie but still Bowie

I bought this album on the strength of the single Heroes. Loved side A immediately but it took me a while to warm to the mostly instrumental 2nd side. Its on regular rotation from my vinyl collection now. The lack of lyrics on most tracks on side B threw me. I associate Bowie with his lyrics but after I listened to them as tracks in their own right rather than Bowie Tracks, I came to enjoy them.

Obviously great, but I’ve never really got into his style.

I’ve sold a lot of stock in David Bowie over the years. I still like a lot of what he did, but not nearly as enthusiastically as I once did. I know there’s like a million more of his records to come on this list, and I anticipate this one being the high water mark to me. I like the synth stuff, and there’s some deep cuts that stand out. A bit of a rounding up here, but I’m setting the bar with Heroes. Will there be a surprise 5⭐️ that I’m sleeping on? Maybe. A side note: whenever I hear Heroes it makes me think of the forgotten Wallflowers cover. It is not forgotten to me, because it was in the intro video for NHL 99, which I played the hell out of as a kid.

Well this was a bit of a strange one. I listened to the album, noted the one track I already knew, got to halfway through side B, and quite liked an instrumental piece, but the next thing I knew it was over. I played the album a second time, and it was pretty much the same as the first time; the album was playing and then it was suddenly over without any sense of time passing. I didn't feel any particular strong connection to the music I was hearing, but I played it twice, and I'm giving it 4 stars based on, well I don't know what to be honest. Maybe I need to try one last time?

A solid record

Bro it's Heroes everyone has heard this album

Pretty cool music but does change a bit nearer the end.

Solid Bowie album. Definitely like it better than hunky dory and somewhat less than 1. Outside.

I know this one. Its good.

I own this album on vinyl! We CAN be heroes.

Ok - I actually dig it. I’ve really only heard the absolute most popular of Bowies songs and I can’t say I was excited to get this to start with but I actually so appreciate that a lot of the music I like today clearly was influenced by these sounds. (I’m 32 years old so while I do listen to a lot of music before my time, Bowie wasn’t really on my list for some reason) Sonically, this is an enjoyable album, I could put it on in the background while cleaning especially the beginning tracks and vibe with it, and the ending instrumental tracks were so chill and relaxing, and interesting. Favorites were Heroes, of course, Moss Garden, Secret Life of Arabia, I’d probably listen again!

Not his best album. Maybe his best song.

Enjoyed this to a lovely sunny springtime lunchtime walk along a river. Quality

An album that balances between the 4 & 5.

Favourites: Joe the Lion, Heroes, Sons of the Silent Age, Moss Garden, Neukölln

I've never listened to a Bowie album from start to finish so I didn't know what to expect but this album took some really interesting turns. I especially loved the Ambient tracks on the back end.

A-Side: 3/5, B-Side 5/5

Love Bowie, I thought the album was really interesting and inventive, I just really really love Spiders from Mars

"We're nothing, and nothing can help us," Bowie strains, at what should be the height of triumph, as he reaches the climax of what might be the greatest song ever written. "Maybe we're lying." That song's one thing, six minutes of unexplainable alchemy. But then you get Blackout, V2-Schneider, The Secret Life of Arabia. How do you explain that? Not my favourite of the Berlin trilogy (that'd be Low, buoyed by Sound and Vision, which, despite what I said above about Heroes, is without question my favourite Bowie.) Still a monument.

Intriguing

I listened to it and wasn’t quite sure about this one, so I gave it a second listen, and then started to get it and appreciate it. By the third time through I really liked it.

Moss Garden hypnotized me

Uplifting beautiful and fun. Not a daily vibe I can get behind but immensely influential.

I recently listened to "Low" for the first time as well, so I'll bring it up since it is sort of tied to this album. I enjoyed the vocals on this album a lot more than "Low", and generally found this one more fun at least on the surface. Clearly both albums were revolutionary, but I didn't necessarily get that perspective when listening to them now. It's a great album, but it doesn't personally really hit a home run with me. As such, Bowie will stay a "once in a while" artist.

A great album throughout, some of the best of the Berlin trilogy

I have heard this album once, before, the first half comprises on Bowie's lyrical songs, where you could meet known structures and sounds up until now on his discography, memorable and enjoyable and, of course, not forgetting his signature "Heroes". Now the second half shows the experimental, instrumental and inspired side, where we meet the introspective mind. This side takes us on a ride where you need to he present in his mind, and acceptance of this change of pace on the album. Be prepared for what the record shows you, you won't expect it. 100% recommended.

Enjoyed this, but not really sure the amount of praise it gets is truly justified….

Thoughts before listening: There sure is a lot of Bowie on this list. That makes sense I guess since he appeals to both fans of classic rock and more avant garde alternative styles. This album is from his very strong late 70s period and the title track is a favorite. Review: Perhaps Bowie was inspired by the punk rock movement going on at the same time, but there is more of a hard rock sound on this album than I was expecting. Thats a good thing for me. I love most of Bowie's music, but his late 70s Berlin trio of albums can be a bit much. This does have the weird mostly instrumental second half that seems unnecessary, but the rock songs on here are great. 4-stars

Chilly

Bowie rules

What an extraordinary man, that David. Side one slaps hard with a banging opener. Rolls into a pretty song and then into one Bowie’s greatest achievements. ““Heroes”” is one of the best songs ever written. Just the right amount of experimental mixed with fun. The next two are great as well, but I take issue with side two. There’s two lines across four out of fives songs. Closer is great, but that ambient music detour did not do it for me. I know, for me, instrumentals are a personal gripe of mine, but as far as they were on this particular album, I’ll take it. Overall, very enjoyable, Mr. Bowie. Thanks. 4/5

Pretty good, Heroes is a good song but overall not my favorite of Bowies.

Good album, but not his best. Lacking the cohesion (and weirdness) of some of his other works.

Bowie. 4

Really good, listened to the 2017 remaster. Definitely could have benefitted modern production tools.

Probably not my favorite of his but still very good

I prefer Low, but Low doesn't have one of the greatest songs ever in "Heroes". It's anthemic. Bowie greatly supported by Eno and Fripp. Side 2 is enjoyable enough, but if I wanted ambient wanderings I'd just listen to Eno.

One of Bowie's most experimental albums, but the iconic title track draws them in. Enjoy!

First time I listened through the whole album. Lots of cool audio landscape. Reminds me of pink Floyd as well.

Just like Low before it, I'm 100% sure I'll consider this one of Bowie's best in a year or so.

This album for the first half was about exactly what I expected. I've never been a huge Bowie fan, although always appreciated his creativity. So I got through about half of it and then it was like oh wtf just happened...2-3 instrumentals in a row and they all totally blew me away. I loved them. Heard Eastern flavors and Indian/oriental sounds, etc. It was really cool. Very well produced and pretty awesome. Then it went back I think and maybe there was 1-2 vocal songs at end that were ok. I think the only one I recognized was Heroes which has been covered recently I think by Dylan's son's band (I think?? - Wallflowers or something)? Most the songs were incredibly creative and interesting and not at all 'normal' 70s type rock I'd expect. I guess I expected that from Bowie. Always very unique. While I didn't get overly excited about a lot of the songs on this album, I did enjoy them and the few instrumentals were just awesome.

Completely digging the whole fuzzy guitar- almost proto-grunge thing he is doing.

pretty interesting

Really appreciate the change of the style in the first part of the album with a more rock and punk approach beyond the usual glam-rock. The third instrumental track was unnecessary and the outro was weak. But the rest is incredible. 8-9/10

It has hit songs and instrumental songs what else does it need

Coolt, komplett album.

David Bowie really was ahead of his time huh? Some really interesting soundscapes here, as well as just some solid great tracks.

My least favourite of the Berlin trilogy, but still some real solid stuff! Curious what other Bowie albums are on here... Hoping there might be some of the weird later stuff too.

This one is a mixed bag. No doubting Bowie’s massive influence on other musicians

It was above average.

Banger, through and through

Tye David Bowie I wanted, but maybe not the David Bowie I needed 🧐

I like this album a lot and I listen to it a lot but the Eno side gets a little long.

Moss Garden is an amazing Eno track. On a Bowie album of course, why the eff not.

Not my favorite David Bowie album, but still a great album! Obviously Heroes is a classic banger.

Despite this being one of many Bowie albums we’ve had, I think I like this one the most. A majority of albums we’ve had I’ve been unimpressed, but this one definitely stood out to me the most. I could see its uniqueness and influence on so much, and it was very interesting overall.

good shit

A very good album, after all I don’t think there is such a thing as a bad David Bowie album. In saying that it isn’t in that upper tier with the likes of Low or Ziggy Stardust but still brilliant.

When I started this journey more than 1000 albums ago I didn’t really get Bowie. As time has gone on I appreciate him more and more.

love david bowie, don’t love the instrumentals

David Bowie really is amazing as an Artist

I'm not in a position to criticize this album. However, listening to this album after "The Next day" and "Blackstar" is a bad choice. I liked it a lot, but given that I enjoyed much more the final albums from Bowie, I can't give it a 5-star.

This is everything Low isn’t, it feels more focused and alive. The vocals are more expressionate and not as distanced as on Low. The highs are so much higher with Heroes and Blackout, and Fripp's guitar work is amazing and gives this project a sharper edge. I didn't care too much for the ambient parts and is definitely the weakest part. Best song: Heroes / Blackout Worst song: Sense of Doubt Cover check: Pretentious but still iconic

I enioyed this one a bit more than the previous one I listened to, though it wasn't enough to make me a Bowie fan. Good instrumentals and decent vocal work. 'Moss Garden' was my fave.

I've heard this one before. Not a huge Bowie fan. But who doesn't love Heroes? Great album.

Round three of David Bowie for me. I think this might be one of the better ones I done so far. For 1977, these songs sound close to what 80’s music would sound like. The electronic elements really work well for Bowie, as these are probably the most fun I had listening to Bowie. Having the second side of the album be mostly a long instrumental was… a choice. It wasn’t too bad, though. It didn’t feel too much out of place. I thought Moss Garden was the best part of it, since it felt so mellow to listen to. I still trying to expand my palette for David Bowie. I’ve never really hear a lot from him, outside the obvious hits like Space Oddity and Changes. So far, this was my favorite, though I’ll see how long that last. Favorite track: Heroes Other hits: Beauty and the Beast, Moss Garden, The Secret Life of Arabia, Blackout

A very strange album. The 5 rock songs on the first half are mostly good with Heroes being an obvious standout. Then the second half is 4 moody ambient tracks with a random funky rock song at the end (which is admittedly pretty good). Overall a pretty fun listen though.

The song Heroes is a 5/5, the album lost a little steam towards the end with the instrumental tracks

Legendary singer, amazing production, and the fact most of it was improvised on the day of recording is impressive. Some of it ain't quite my vibe so I'm feelin a strong 4 to a light 4.5.

After the succession of Young Americans, Station to Station and Low, followed by the detour of Aladdin Sane, I am chronologically back on track with Bowie. "Heroes" is the second of the Berlin trilogy, and the only one of the three to be completely recorded in Berlin. The title track is already a classic in my book, but how does the rest stack up? I like it, though it has some notable ups and downs compared to the preceding Low. Both albums are structurally similar in that the first half included more conventional songs while the second half included more synth-driven instrumentals that Bowie composed with Brian Eno. The songs in the first half are generally fun, such as the abrasive "Beauty and the Beast" and "Joe the Lion" with the swampy bass grooves and heavy guitars, and the space-age sounding "Sons of the Silent Age" with the ethereal atmosphere created from Bowie's wistful singing of psychotic withdrawals and spare saxophone play. But then the second half instrumentals don't feel as engaging as the ones on Low. There are a few good ideas like the use of koto on "Moss Garden" and the driving groove of "V-2 Schneider", yet those moments are counterbalanced by the nothingness of "Sense of Doubt" with the repeated piano motif and whooshing synths, and the elongated drone of "Neuköln". Bowie's vocals come back at the end on "The Secret Life of Arabia" to end on a nice, funky note. It helped that I understood Low before going into "Heroes," as the two go hand in hand concerning album structure and delivery. It's certainly an intriguing continuation of Bowie's work with Eno and producer Tony Visconti, and as a result, it comes with a solid recommendation.

classic

Great!!!

Just for one day

Like sitting in a Moss Garden, I had no Sense of Doubt listening to this.

Very good album - maybe 6th on my list though of Bowie best...

In modern parlance, Heroes was a mixtape that Bowie dropped right after a career high album that marked him entering his sober Berlin era.

An album never heard before, you can hear the 1970s with a rusty sound a not streamlined music style. I like it.

Heroes, this song, is probably my favorite David Bowie song. I think it’s one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Its structure, buildup, and sound are timeless and unlike much else in terms of massive hits. Heroes the album has never lived quite up to the expectations I have for it and that its reputation insists on. I like it, it’s an easy 4 stars album, but take away the title track and it’s just an okay album in my opinion. I always enjoy it, but after Heroes is finished it doesn’t grab me like I want an undisputed masterpiece to. Overall I’d rank at least 5 Bowie albums in front of it, maybe more. This of course says more about Bowie’s ridiculously good career than it does anything negative about Heroes. I just have Heroes as less than a masterpiece.

I really liked it some cool and weird vibes about the songs, but it all tied itself together. My favourite song without of a doubt is "The secret life of Arabia". I'll have to rate this a solid 7/10 for me.

clicked for me in a way a lot of other bowie records haven’t for whatever reason. it’s not labryinth but still….

I enjoyed it, but I really think there are better Bowie albums

3 -4 estrelas.

I waited a bit too late in the day to give this a fair shake. I’ve never been a massive Bowie fan, but this was enjoyable enough. ‘Heroes’ was my favorite track, song wise, but I enjoyed getting lost in the ambiance of the B-side, especially ‘Moss Garden’ and ‘Neukoln’. 3.5/5

Ein paar Ohrwürmer

Great selection of music

Bowie, Eno, and Visconti are the Kareem, Magic, and Worthy of art rock. No, I will not elaborate.

It was pretty good!

Another David Bowie album. Good stuff overall. A little strange to have the three instrumental tracks back to back in the second half of the album, but they sounded nice and blended into each other. Standouts: Heroes, Sons of the Silent Age, Black Out, and Moss Garden.

Really enjoyed the record, never knew that most of the second half was instrumental, found the music very atmospheric

Different, as always. 3.5

easy listening classic rock with a wide variety of sounds and musical creativity that oscillates from arena rock to almost psychedelic to new age.

I'm actually glad that I heard 'Low' before this album. I think it's huge step up in his style and huge improvement. Could this be peak Bowie? I was thinking about 5 but 'Secrets of Arabia' exists on this album and for me this song is a joke.

Some decent Bowie bops and a bunch of intriguing instrumentals

mjög gott. poppaður fyrri helmingur og tilraunakenndari síðari helmingur. þarf líklega fleiri hlustanir og fær því: 4,5.

classic Bowie I guess

Great title track

While most of the album is fairly forgettable, this does contain the title track, which is one of the most haunting and moving songs ever uttered.

3.5 rounded up quite good but like what’s up with the ambient section highlights: joe the lion, heroes, sons of the silent age (nov 26 2024)

A great album. As many have noted, not as breathtaking overall as the cream of the crop in Bowie’s discography, but there are a few standouts. And ‘Heroes’ is a song for the ages.

Some serious solid Bowie.

Legendary record from one of Bowie’s most prominent eras. The title track is one of the greatest songs ever written - and I feel like it’s doing its fair share of lifting on this album. I’m not calling the rest of ‘Heroes’ bad; that would be downright blasphemy. I just don’t think it’s as strong as what he presented on Low. Especially the instrumentals of side 2 doesn’t leave me moved in the same way as Low does.

Pretty good, sounds ahead of it's time in spots, dated in others.
