Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Could tell the ol' sourpuss parts without really knowing he was part of this album! Great listen.

Intriguing potential grower. Signs off with a banger!

This is close to Discipline by Kc, had no idea Robert Fripp is the guitarist in Heroes. The B-Side is not as strong as the A-Side, he is doing like Low, but the ambient tracks aren't as good here. It's not as good as Low, but almost as good and one of the best rock albums. A

My first Bowie rating! Not my top rated among his albums apart from the classic title track and Sons of the Silent Age, the Berlin period has never been my favourite and the Low-style electronica of side 2 is a bit forgettable.

Really good stuff, I've never actually listened to the whole thing before. Some nice variety too. I'm sure that I will listen to this again.

I love Bowie! I like this album and especially the instrumental songs. This album is like a journey between “2 bowies”. Or the whole trio loft does of Low, Heroes and Lodger. Heavy influenced by Berlin and ambient sounds. It’s playful and fun to listen too. Sounds like he was very inspired while creating this album

Heroes is one of the best songs ever, but also just about all I knew from this album going in. The rest of the album has some down moments but also some weird and wonderful instrumental moments that I really liked. I also really like how Bowie experimented with vocal effects. Quirky breaks are then pulled back around into some cool tracks too. :)

This was an interesting one. I like David Bowie a lot. Some of his stuff can be a little difficult to digest at first, including this album, but that adds depth and intrigue. This album felt rewarding to listen to multiple times. After listening 3 or 4 times I’m still not sure how to rate this. Initially it felt too experimental, but I grew to really like the first half of the record - particularly Heroes and Sons of the Silent Age. I’m not really sure about the ambient tracks. 3.5/5, rounding up, but I reckon with more time it could easily become a strong 4.

Had a handful of incredible tracks. Bowie is an exceptional musician and producer but not everything on this one resonated with me

Another great Bowie album, with a few bangers and very little chaff.

Excellent Bowie sound. Rest in Peace Duke.

Heroes probably tips this enough to get to four. Very solid.

Not sure this is quite a 5 for me. Title track is phenomenal Ofc and some other tracks stand out to me like the secret life of Arabia (which is great at the end of the instrumentals) and sons of the silent age but apart from that it just doesn’t quite do it for me. 9/10

Not as good as Ziggy. Bit too experimental.

The album is really enriching and I already enjoyed Bowie from best off but had not explored his individual albums. This is the best of Bowie.

4 sterren, sommige nummers te weinig tekst

Was completely unaware of the instrumental cuts on this until listening. Moss Garden is such a tender and beautiful well after the drones of Sense of Doubt. Plus, The Secret Life of Arabia slaps.

Oh wow, I had no idea Bowie worked with Fripp and Eno. This is what wet dreams are made of. Heroes is such a low-key, effortless jam. Wandering and skittering synths underpinned by a straightforward marching drum beat. Reverberations of this song can be felt all over the work of LCD Soundsystem (particularly on This Is Happening and American Dream). Not sure I would call this "dream pop," but there is an ascendant atmospheric quality at work. Sons of the Silent Age stretches into a psychedelic realm with lopsided melodies, droning saxophone, and dripping (almost Floydian) guitar noodling. Never seen this side of Bowie before. The intro on Sense of Doubt is ominous as hell. Feels like soundtrack music for some medieval dragon-slayer movie where they are ascending a mountain pass in the fog. Love how this bleeds over directly into Moss Garden, which spreads itself out and melts all the fog and bad feels away into some koto play with nature sounds in the background. Highlights were Heroes, Sons of the Silent Age, and the instrumental detour of Sense of Doubt through Neukoln. I'll be honest, I was hoping to get a bit more Fripp action on here, but I can't complain. At its core, this is a Bowie record, and just like any other Bowie, it is well-produced, well-sequenced, and unique from all of its surrounding bodies of work. Love the synth tones and atmospheric effects that Eno brings to bear throughout. This was solid, but by no means my favorite from Bowie. High 4 / 5.

I can't believe the actor from Zoolander has had so many albums on this list. Moss Garden was a brilliant change of pace. Was this my favorite Bowie album? Probably. Is it because it was the album I was most focused for? Probably.

First half was pretty standard Bowie, which I am not complaining about. Heroes the song was really good. Got spooky with V-2 Schneider and Sense of Doubt. Then got super mysterious with Moss Garden and Neukoln. I really liked the back half of this album.

Second time rating this one, and it's an easy 4. Heroes is one of my favorite Bowie songs ever. Love the rockier songs but second half is straight chillinnnnn. Moss Garden makes me want to do shrooms outside.

I've given it four stars because it's a Bowie album. imnsvho he made at least six better albums during the miraculous period that began with The Man Who Sold The World and ended with this album. But it's still brilliant. If almost any other act had made this it would be a towering career highlight.

Wow, great groovy album with some fun weirdness in Neukoln. Ends very strong with The Secret Life of Arabia. Title track is an all time banger. This was a very enjoyable listen and could be thrown on any time.

Absolute journey of an album but fun to listen to 7/10

Worth 4 stars for Heroes alone.

Genius.

Heroes is a great song, and most of the album is good. I can’t think of a single song I disliked, and I know I’ll relisten to this album. It just falls this side of a rounding error short of being a five star.

Fav: Beauty And The Beast Least Fav: Neuköln Was not expecting that second half of the album, but it pleasantly surprised me

Yeah it's great. The ambient songs I was less enthused about but playing them while I'm doing something else isn't bad. Other tracks like Blackout are fantastic though. Ironically enough the one song I don't like is Heroes funnily enough. Regardless the album is pleasant to the ear.

pretty weird and nifty listen, banger hit too

Very funky. Bowie's odd way of singing is great. The last song is underappreciated I think.

One of the Berlin trilogy albums. This one more ambient and Brian Eno was involved in the production. Do like the more rock-style songs in the album, the ambient tracks are also relaxing but maybe the shift between the two style of songs is slightly big. Nonetheless more accessible as an album compared to Low.

title track is awesome but the rest is just ok I guess? do we really need 3 tracks of ambient instrumentals?

okay i actually really like this

No, really guys, I'm pretty sure this dude is gay or something...

Heroes is such a damn good song. Pretty solid album throughout.

The ambient stuff wasn't bad and gave the album an interesting feel but meant I'll probably not listen to it back to front again

listened to again very artful and the instrumental stuff is so texturally fascinating

This album was interesting, the first part, the singing and everything was great, and then a shift happens until the last song, and the shift made me listen more closely. Im not sure I would recommend this album as a whole, just because of the shift that happens from the number Sense of doubt, this song was weirdly haunting for me, but I did enjoy it, last part felt like I was told a story, but not knowing why it was told to me.

First half was pretty good. Not Bowie's best, but still Bowie. Other than Heroes, I don't know that there were a lot of standout tracks. A lot of the B side was instrumental-only stuff that was probably really cool in 1977 but sounds like a track off the Subnautica soundtrack in 2024. Really good for 70s/80s electronic music, but of its era

It's pretty good, with some standout tracks but I'm not sure it holds up with the best of Bowie. 02/07/24

Solid album with a number of recognizable tracks I didn’t realize were on it. Ends a little weird, but I’m still for it.

Fantastic 4 star album, but not 5 stars, because you also have Low, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Station To Station and each one of them are better as an album and more coherently.

OK. But was expecting more

Heroes is good then the rest of the album goes into the weirdo zone.

Some absolute belters

okay berlin diva

My first Bowie album! Heroes is clearly the best song on the album, but I listened twice and enjoyed all of it.

Sounds just as fresh and weird as ever

I heard this Eno guy he worked with is ok too. Clasic goodness

The second part of Bowie's "Berlin Trilogy" finds him still experimenting with soundscapes while combining them with krautrock and pop. The title track is still brilliant as mostly everything else here - the only issue is one could argue that the instrumental tracks aren't quite as good as those on his previous album 'Low'. Best Tracks: Beauty and the Beast; Heroes; V2-Schneider

Now that I’ve heard all three of the Berlin Trilogy, I’d rank them Station to Station, Heroes, then Low…

Good but not the best Bowie album. I'm not a massive fan of ambient / electronic type music but I found it a bit more tolerable as an interlude and can see the interest as it demonstrated Bowie's continuing evolution as a songwriter. I found it quite nice to listen to the second side on the train just watching the countryside go by. I will still dock a point for it because I was a little bored but there's plenty of decent songs on here so still 4*

a different side to bowie. I LOVE IT

If it is nice. Play it twice.

I don’t like it as much as I “should”, and I seem to be in the minority in thinking that “Beauty and the Beast” is lame as hell. However, the title track is an all-timer, and I actually quite like a lot of the ambient stuff. 3.5/5

Weird, but not bad... Heroes is really good, towards the end the album becomes quite psychedelic...

cool album. i like the instrumentals

The more I dive into Bowie's deeper discography, the more I realize that fair chunk of his music is not something you listen to when you just want to vibe to some tunes. He has stuff that demands intent listening, the kind where you sit down with your best speakers or headphones to get a fuller experience. But then again, he also has stuff that's so easy to dance or sing along to. I suppose it's a good thing to have the best of both worlds in one album, it's just a bit jarring to have two contrasting sounds when you're only in the mood for one and not the other. Dampens the enjoyment a little bit, even when you know that the music is good. And it is good. Standouts are Heroes and Joe the Lion.

A slow burner, aside from the instantly recognisable and fantastic title track. The album has a bleak, dystopian feel with, title track aside, the best numbers being the three instrumentals on side two.

This album has the peculiar handicap of containing one of the greatest songs of all time, so the others tracks tend to fade into the background. Still, a great, if uneven, record.

The album is hard to sum up. There is the song "Heroes" which is a very good song, then there are a few average songs and then there is an instrumental part which is not too bad. Overall I would say it is a good album.

Another really cool album from Bowie's Berlin period. I don't like this album as much as Low, which I think is my favorite Bowie album, but many of the features that make that album great are still here 4/5

Bowie strikes again.

David Bowie is one of my favorites, Heroes is one my all time favorite songs. I had forgotten about most of the other songs on this record. It was nice and nostalgic to listen to them again.

The more it’s on the better it gets. Can’t really expect a ton of “hooks” like the track “Heroes” it’s mainly expansive and orchestral, exploding a lot with Bowie’s energy, the classic vocal talking / singing.

This is one of those albums that manages to sound very much like a product of its time without sounding dated. The lyrics, rather than sounding improvised, come across as thoughtful commentary on contemporary events. The instrumental tracks are interesting in a way few rock instrumentals are.

More ambient and instrumental music than I expected based on the hit single. Not bad, but it didn't feel like a complete Bowie album.

7/10 Bowie=good, Heroes the single = good, Heroes the album = fine enough 5-13-2024

This was never one of my favorite Bowie albums so it's probably been decades since I last heard it, if ever. I liked the funky, muddy Beauty and the Beast and Heroes is awesome, naturally, though sounds a little wheezy. Not much else grabs except for V-2 Schneider, though in general all of side two is fine as ambient music. Entire album feels like a transition for a great artist: new sounds & instruments and sometimes it works and sometimes, well, sometimes you get "Secret Life of Arabia." Have to give it a 4 just for Heroes though.

LISTENED TO 100 TIMES!

One extra for the title track

Bowie is an artist that was generally always ahead of time and this album is no different since by this point he was starting to experiment with "electronic" music which would go on to influence countless artists. The first half of this album is mostly similar to his prior albums and delivers some of the albums highlights in "Joe the Lion", the title track and "Blackout". The second half is mostly instrumental tracks where the experimentation with electronic music is really pushed to the forefront, and while this is a less interesting listen in 2024, I imagine that this must have been quite a unique experience way back in the 70s. The album then ends with "The Secret Life of Arabia" which is another highlight from this album. All in all, a solid jam.

Was surprised by the melancholic shift but I still enjoyed it. -8/10

Did NOT enjoy the moss garden and neukoln bullshit, other than that pretty good. For some reason Bowies stuff isn’t super exciting to me but it’s still good. 7/10

I like David Bowie but his stuff never really blows my mind. 7/10

7/10 - Better than the other Bowie album. There were a few songs I enjoyed quite a bit. There was a major mood and style shift that caught me off guard but Moss garden was quite good. However, i was even more surprised on the switch back for secret life of arabia

Was gonna comment on how similar this sounded to a talking heads album, but I guess eno helped produce it so that makes sense. I liked this more than the last Bowie album; the sound was a little strange overall but my issue with Bowie is typically that he just kinda bores me, and this was pretty entertaining. 7/10

Obviously some legendary tunes and recordings but the production always sounded too cacophonic for me

I have an original pressing of this, but it's not my favorite Bowie.

I really enjoy this album. Another classic by Bowie.

Though it doesn't hit the highs of "Low," "Heroes" still soars as the second act of Bowie's ambient, experimental Berlin Trilogy, introducing one of its strongest characters in Robert Fripp's atmospheric guitar work.

I love Bowie. I've listened to his entire discography all the way through at least once before, so, Songs already saved to playlist, just Heroes and Moss Garden, But it's been a while, and I was young. I dunno what I'm saying, lol, anyways...I don't have a lot of time for this, so I at least want to say that I'm a weirdo and I'm a fan of the dramatic, synth-y, instrumentals, especially with an upbeat, poppy song at the end to sign off with. I know a lot of people won't agree with me, but still. So, I added Beauty and the Beast, Joe the Lion, Blackout, Sense of Doubt (I love the way it leads into Moss Garden), and The Secret Life of Arabia. Not the best Bowie album to me, but I'm happy I'm doing this and gave this a re-listen as a fan. :) Non-listeners, listen with an open mind and ear, it may not be your cup of tea but I and many others have certainly enjoyed the depth and strangeness that comes along with Bowie.

Very good. My second Bowie album so far

Awesome , I love it but not all of them , very addictive and experimental

Creative master, uses some pop songs to bring in weirder stuff (last few songs)

Though not as monumental as Ziggy, I enjoyed this almost as much. I’ve quickly become a Bowie fan

One of the rare albums of which I find the second half stronger than the first half. I love the more experimental and ambient songs (The Secret Life of Arabia, Sense of Doubt, Moss Garden, Neuköln) than most of the first half, except Heroes which is a brilliant song. Overall I think 'Heroes' is a great album which was really forward thinking at the time it was released, but it is only the second best Bowie album in his Berlin trilogy because 'Low' is better than this one. A strong 4.

One of the Berlin Trilogy albums, Heroes displays a Bowie doing what he does best, experimenting. The titular song of the album is the most well known and arguably the best, but that shouldn't discount the creativity on display throughout the rest of the tracks. While the first half of songs are more typical to what you might expect from Bowie in this era, the second half opens up to some atmospheric instrumental tracks that I really enjoy. All in all, a solid listen.

Really enjoying catching up with Bowie

I suspect this won’t be the most popular opinion, but the instrumental-heavy second half is what really elevated this album for me. Although I didn’t enjoy it as much as Ziggy Stardust and Blackstar, it’s still a solid and interesting album. 3.5 rounded up

very good album, great vocals, great sounds favourite song is nuekoln due to its psychedelic feel

Very good

I liked that the second half of this album is less pop and more free form. Haven't actually listened to this album front to back before so it was a pleasant surprise.

I wasn’t expecting such a long series of instrumentals, but a David Bowie string of no-word songs is definitely on the higher end of enjoyable. Seen as sort of a one-song album, which is understandable given it's one of his biggest hits, but still an overall nice, cozy, complete-sounding project from start to finish.

I was surprised by the amount of instrumental music on this album. I liked it a lot. I give it 4 stars.

A sublime record that is built around the title track - and while there are no particular stand out singles beside it - all the songs complement each other. Another record’s record - all strewn with David Bowie’s essential cool.

Good Bowie album

Classic Bowie

I want to give it 5 starts because its Bowie. But of all the Bowie albums its not my favorite album as a whole.

Too bad Hollywood got stuck on ONE song.

3.9 Nothing beats Low. but it's better than lodger, faves: beauty and the beast, heroes

My favourite album of the Berlin trilogy. Best track is the title track "Heroes", but I also like "V-2 Schneider".

jep, klassinen bowie produktio. eli paska produktio.. vitsi vitsi. maailmanluokkaahan se oli.. silloin 70-luvulla heh.. ei tiannut olla teknologia yhtä kehittynyt kun nykyään.. mukava ambienttti loppualbumista joten annetaan vähän boonusta. perkele kyllä pelasti albumain b-osio nyt oiken olan takaa sense of doubt

Not my favorite Bowie album, but very good.

As expected with Bowie, it’s a very good album. Don’t think it’s a great one though.

Lost a point for self-indulgence. The fan is always right.

favourite song: joe the lion the first half was so good that i can forgive the second half

Interesting, several songs with no lyrics, experimental

Klasik bir albüm.

Goods: heroes, v2 schneider

Heroes takes you through an audio journey of music so varied, it feels like the songs could be considered different genres. This makes for an interesting listen instead of the boring every song sounds the same albums.

The second half of the album takes a turn, but, there's some really interesting beats there.

Not my favourite album from him, jut still a great achievement!!

well it gets weird in the second half but its Bowie so its ok. glorious record again. I, as everyone love Heroes the song but I've always really liked the Oasis version as it is quite powerful

Was not expecting the second half to be mostly instrumental but I was pleasantly surprised.

I enjoyed Heros.

Great atmosphere. Really good songwriting. Second half is getting weirder and weirder yet even more atmospheric. Definitely need to be in the mood.

Nice album, I really like the voice on beauty and the beast. But the two halves of the album don't seem to match, they're so different. Now I understand why Christiane F. Once said, that a Bowie concert had something to do with her heroin addiction. Kind of weird but I would listen again.

Nice, more disco than remember but great ref for Avante garde pop of the day

It’s an entertaining listen. I’ve never loved Bowie but think he’s done a cool job of constructing his albums. I enjoyed listening to it but it may not make it into the rotation.

It was good. Not anything special, but good music and a great song.

I struggled with this one a bit. I think I mentioned in the Low review that it’s only in the last few years that I’ve started to appreciate the Berlin era stuff more. It always felt a bit too cold and disengaged, but Low in particular has grown on me. This one, not so much. It’s interesting doing it after Thriller. We talked about that album feeling like the honing of one particular idea or formula, whereas this feels like someone trying lots of different ideas. As a result it’s one I admire rather than love. The exception is the title track, perhaps because it’s the one song with genuine emotion to it, whereas the others have a detached quality. That said, Joe the Lion, Beauty and The Beast and Neukoln are all interesting. It would be a three, but Heroes is wonderful and bumps it up.

I initially was unimpressed by how all over the place this album was compared to Ziggy, however after looking it's recording process up it makes sense. David Bowie constructed lyrics for most of the songs on the fly in a studio just meters from the Berlin wall. Robert Fripp apparently finished all of the guitar work for this album in 3 days. Now that I have that context I'll need to register. I'm glad that I listened to this and that I took the time to review it's history. Still not my favorite Bowie record but I'm excited to revisit soon. 4/5.

1. 3.5 2. 4.2 3. 4.1 4. 3.7 5. 3.8 6. 4 7. 3.8 8. 4.2 9. 4.4 10. 4

'Are you going to tell him the mike wasn't plugged in?' 'Nope.' 'Hopefully no one will notice.'

moss is a hero to me, and not just for one day

Somewhere between ambient and nervous

Bowie is a legend, and every album that he did has at least one hit on it, for me, Heroes (that is a classic) and Beauty and The Beast are the good ones here, even tho the other songs are really cool. I'm only giving this 4 stars because of the extensive instrumentals in the end, not saying that they aré bad because they have a unique style and they're not repetitive, but it's not exactly my thing

I love bowie but not my fav album

The front half of the album was awesome. I truly have not enjoyed enough David Bowie in my lifetime. I was definitely thrown by how interlude-heavy the back half of the album was. For that reason, I am docking a point.

There are classics but I can never get into the deeper cuts in Bowie records. My only standout from him is Ziggy as I love every track on that.

Really liked this. I haven't listened to much Bowie. This is an interesting little album. He does write catchy tunes but I have to admit I need some more time to warm up to him as a singer. I also really enjoyed the instrumental tracks here. A great range. Looking forward to going through more albums which I assume will pop up. Standout Track: Moss Garden

Interesting Sings for a few songs then it's instrumentals. Liked hearing "heroes"

4 stars

a few gems on here 3.7/5 listened 2x

very strange but very good listen. the begging of the album is very fun to listen to yet then it switches to psychedelic and instrumentals as the last half of the album. although it was still relaxing to listen to.

Man, I have always struggled to get into Bowie, in part because I really don't enjoy art rock, and I'm really glad this was my first introduction to him on this list. As others have said, this may actually be a low point compared to other albums of his, but I think it's also a bit of an easier entry point for someone who's been on the edge. It still keeps to the art rock vibes, but really helps me understand why David Bowie has such an incredible following. This is full of incredible tracks from Heroes, to Beauty and the Beast, and the experimental and jazzy instrumentals at the end, especially Moss Garden.

Not my favourite Bowie album, but still a banger

I really enjoyed this album! Particularly enjoyed the instrumental songs toward the end “Sense of Doubt”, “Moss Garden,” and “Neukoln.” Other notable songs for me were “Blackout” and “The Songs of Arabia.” Only reason I take a star away is because, while I could easily listen to the whole album again, there’s nothing about it that would make me REACH for it.

I already had Heroes on my liked songs list but don't know the other songs. I'm enjoying this album.

A pleasant listen, slightly above average

Great songs.

Bien 1 cara, segunda instrumental

Listening to music while stoned will sometimes make sober you question why you added bad songs to the playlist. Is this album one of them? I'm not sure. I liked the ambient stuff on my first listen, but nothing else. But now, I like almost all of this, some I didn't like before even becoming new favorites. Do I finally "get" David Bowie? Right now, I think I do. This was great

4.5 stars

Lesser golden age Bowie, but the title track is an all timer. 4/5 "Oh my god. It's Monday."

Cool spacey sound. The title track is a timeless classic!

Needs a relisten. Opens very strong, but a lot of ambient frippertronic tracks to the end that need time to digest.

Early synth and interesting use of saxophone create some haunting sounds. Great rhythm throughout. Vocals and harmonies shine as well.

I had heard of Bowie’s Berlin trilogy, I know it’s legendary, I just never got around to listening to it. I guess I thought I’d be disappointed. I always assumed it’d be very melancholy slow music. Boy was I wrong! This album was wild! A lot of fun and I will definitely be returning to it in the future.

Great songwriting, production (sounds like it was made 5 years after it came out), and singing all through out. The first half of this one is AMAZING. It’s banger after banger from Bowie. However, the ambient works on Side 2 are rather self indulgent and uninteresting. It never really picks itself up again after Sons of the Stone Age. Still amazing just for the first half ALONE.

I cannot believe I had never heard the whole album before! Very Berlin.

Heroes is David Bowies' best song. The rest of side A is kind of forgettable. Side B is good, but it doesn't make sense listening to it on it's own. The comparison to Low is inevitable, and "Heroes" doesn't quite stand up. Conclusion: It's good but I kind of expect it to be better 3.6

Nice older album from Bowie. forgot he did instrumental music

For real?! Jo. Rating: 4,25/5

Not impressed by the regular songs, because probably my expectations were raised to high. But the ambient part was unexpected and awesome!

Do not care for the opening track but it recovers on track 2. Heroes such a solid song. I like the mix of his voice on Sons of the Silent Age. Sense of Doubt is a cool track to build up the album with some variation that is no jarring. Into the meditative Moss Garden. Some stand out tracks but also a solid construction as an album.

I really like it. Dreamy vibes. Totally Bowie.

Instrumentals were dull, but Heroes and the last track really stood out

Berlin, 2nd album from trilogy. Bowie and Iggy. Iconic Heroes

Interesting to hear it again.

crazy how this is like half normal good Bowie stuff and half super cool weird ambient music

Heroes is a five star song (hat tip to Godzilla). The rest of the album is pretty good. About 20 or so years ago I went through a phase where I listened to this album pretty regularly.

One of 3 Eno/Bowie collabs, this is one of my favorite Bowie albums, along with Low (another Eno album) and Ziggy Stardust. This one integrates the synthy instrumentals a little better than Low, though I think I like that one better.

Very nice. A solid Bowie. I liked the first half with vocal more than the instrumental songs, but I enjoyed it all.

Hell yeah. It's been a long time since I listened to this album straight through (I had a Bowie deep dive moment some years back). Looking forward to this album today. Half of this album is the Brain Eno show (Ol' Sourpuss as the Scotts would say). Like "Low" before it or, for example, Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love", it uses the a-side b-side record format to put two separate projects on one piece of wax. Side 1 is Bowie flexing funky new wave tinged muscle into his signature Bowie-isms and side 2 is Brian Eno weaving together beautiful, avant garde sound scapes that vary from Japanese folk inspired, to jazz sax funk, to ambient terror. This is a certified cool one.

<3 david bowie. always. he is such an amazing artist. heroes is a classic and already in my daily playlist. i love the instrumentals in this album. moss garden is probably a new fav. it would make a great song for meditation.

Even with some experimental songs, “Heroes” makes up for it. It’s probably one of the greatest songs ever.

Not one of the best Bowie albums, but still pretty good.

I think people either love Bowie or don't get it. I get it. This is awesome, including the more ambient soundscape stuff. Very 70s Bowie

In Heroes, David Bowie was clearly inspired by the artist David Bowie and his album Low. David Bowie pays homage to David Bowie’s album Low and its formula of having a broadly instrumental B side, very unlike the more rock-orientated A side. While Heroes is an excellent emulation by David Bowie, David Bowie’s album is certainly a more rounded and more enjoyable album all in all. Side A becomes so much more when I start paying attention to Robert Fripp’s guitar. Blackout is thrilling, Joe the Lion is such electric. Sons of the Silent Age is like if the middle of Court of the Crimson King was more lively. Also love that so many of the songs fade out. Adds to the chaos - a constant sprawl of Krautrock-y mayhem. And god I love some piano in a rock song. Ben Folds Five will always astonish me. Be My Wife is my favourite Low track and there’s so much to love on Heroes with that dirty piano energy. Beauty and the Beast the most obvious to me.

Known before: Artist Standouts: 05.Blackout Rating: 7.0

So 70s

Very good album, some songs I sleep, most songs I bop. Will I listen to again: 80%

Blackout bra groove. Moss garden otroligt vacker. Fantastiskta instrumentala låtar.

Bowie is always good. The man knows how to roll

4 stars only because the Heroes song

Classic

Although I really liked the ambient music of the second half, I just feel like they don't really fit together with the more rock/pop songs of the first half, and I think it might have been better as 2 separate releases.

4.3 bangers men litt spess slutt

Well, well, well. If it isn't the first artist to give me a 5/5 for the project. My hopes for this one were quite high given Mr. Bowie's track record for me so far. Did he give me another 5/5? Well, I think Heroes barely misses the mark. This is still a pretty good album. It goes in some interesting directions, the instrumentation is great, and the singing, while not quite as consistently good as it was in Ziggy Stardust, is still pretty good. Speaking of instrumentation, Robert Fripp's guitar work is great, and the talent that went into this album is insane. The title track is really good, and some of the other tracks are quite good as well. I think my big complaint is that it just feels more confused than Ziggy Stardust. That album had a concept and it ran with it. Heroes doesn't really seem to have any major goals in mind. It starts with some pretty standard rock tracks before going into a more avant-garde set of instrumentals in the second half. I can appreciate the willingness to do more than the basics, but I don't really know if that switch worked for me as much as it could have. The instrumentals did make my math homework quite a bit more bearable though. Overall, Heroes is a pretty good album, but I definitely wouldn't call it my favorite of David Bowie's catalog. 4/5.

Bowie’s music always defies categorisation, especially his earlier work.

The song Heros I think is my favorite Bowie song, overall.

first I wanted to give it 3.5 stars but the last few trcks from the album really excited me for one more time! really unexpected and im here for that!!!

I was glad to get this album as more of a historical listen than something I fully enjoyed from start to finish. This and the Berlin trilogy more broadly are more interesting to me as cultural touchstones of both the revolutions beginning to happen in the ussr at the time and the entrance of electronica into the mainstream than as music to listen to without context. That’s not to say there aren’t bangers, mostly heroes, that make it a fun listen but a lot of the songs aren’t super memorable other than the fact that they helped electronica music become the major genre it is today. I definitely liked Low more than this but I’ll probably still give it the same rating because it doesn’t deserve a 3 if only because heroes is one of the most inspirational songs ever.

kinda weird at the end. and the middle. and the start.

Hell. Yes.

Heroes, Blackout

Grrrreat

First time listener to this album - only track I've heard (obviously) is Heroes, but the whole thing feels like a cohesive work. Possibly a bit of a grower, but you can't deny the genius here. Favourite tracks: Beauty and the Beast, Sons of the Silent Age, Sense of Doubt, Moss Garden.

This didn’t grab me as much as some of his other stuff but it’s still getting 4 stars because it’s Bowie and ‘Heroes’ the song is a banger

Bowie has a sound like no other - a great album with a few classic tracks.

Top 3: #5 #6 #8

Listened to this while playing Nemesis? Bowie seems like appropriate alien music. Another album where I know the title track and nothing more. Enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting. I could absolutely tell where the A-side ended and the B-side began. The first half was what I would expect when I think of DB, but the second half was largely instrumental ambient acid music. My partner also really enjoyed this album, and the way it influenced Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Very classic Bowie

Embarrassed to say I didn’t love the first half. The second half picked up though. Needs another listen.

"Heroes" is one of my favorite Bowie songs! The rest of this album is not hitting the same, but I'm giving it a chance. The rest isn't really clicking. The Sense of Doubt -> Neuköln I dig a lot in a different way. More in line with the ambient stuff I've been enjoying lately. That's Eno for you. Probably still a 4 from me overall. About half the songs don't really do that much for me. "Heroes" is solid, and Side B is pretty nice and inventive.

I was born in the 80s but I've never gone out of my way to listen to Bowie. Sure I watched him in Labyrinth and enjoyed the movie and music and probably heard his songs on the radio throughout my life but that's about the extent of my knowledge and listening experience with him. That being said I really did enjoy this album. I was surprised by the number of instrumentals to be completely honest. I mean that in a good way because I enjoyed them all, which speaks volumes of the quality of music if there isn't a need for singing or lyrics. As my first David Bowie listening experience I enjoyed this and would listen again. I probably won't go out of my way to buy the album or search it out for another listen because I get a song in my head but it was still a pleasant listen. 4 out 5.

live laugh love bowie 7, 8, 9??? érdekes

Very good, will likely give Bowie more of chance.

very 80s experimental; I love the song heroes!

Fascinating album. Takes a hard left turn halfway through that makes for an interesting journey into sound and theme

Favourite tracks: beauty and the beast; heroes; secret life of arabia

So so so good. I can see why people lauded David Bowie. I feel like even today the sound on this album feels innovative and unique. Since I never grew up listening to Bowie, I hear snippets of other bands in this album instead of labeling it all as quintessentially Bowie. For example, Joe the Lion has a clear Beatles feel to it, especially with the banging pianos in the back, Heros has calls to Joshua Tree era U2, and V2 Schneider give me Peter Gabriel (ugh) vibes. Of course two of these three references post date this album, so the relationship is likely reversed (if at all extant). It took me getting to the middle section of the album before I hit the songs that felt uniquely Bowie, such as Sons of the Silent Age and Blackout. I think what I liked was that it felt so distinct from other classic rock from that age (which I have heard much of), so finding a unique vibe from an era that I've largely explored is super cool! I also really liked the last three songs which felt like an art-house movie in its presentations of motifs and vibes over concrete settings and lyrics! Overall very enjoyable and a surprise find!

Very Bowie. Interesting and daring.

Bowie is always good

Not his best work, but it's David Bowie, so I'm going to be a little biased and inflate the rating. I love him in general, but this misses the mark.

I may get hate for this but Bowie is overrated. Don’t get me wrong, I love him, but much of his catalog doesn’t do that much for me, and this isn’t his best album. A couple of great songs and then some fairly interesting stuff. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

Heroes starts as chaotic rock and somehow transitions to a movie soundtrack without you even noticing. Normally the 2nd half wouldn’t hold my attention, but Bowie is able to. It’s ambient but dramatic. Requires more listens 8.6/10

david bowie had such an impressive career. and the fact that I'm not really familiar w his albums is quite embarrassing

Favorite song was definitely Blackout. I like how his songs sound cold and hollow

I love the guitar in all of the songs. There’s also a lot of cool synth and sound design stuff. I think V-2 Schneider and Sense of Doubt (oh my god SoD is so good) are my favorite songs on the album. The entire second half of the album where it gets all instrumental is AMAZING! I looked it up it’s in collaboration with Brian Eno so that makes a lot of sense. Closing track is perfect.

The ambient second half was a major surprise, and a good one at that. Definitely has led me to listen the album again.

Back to back black and white album⁉️⁉️Fuck yeah

Several songs like Heroes carry the album, but wasn't a fan of all the sax.

Nice 80's

Consistently good with one standout track (see album title)

Chill, interesting.

1st half is good, funky sounds. Heroes overplayed so skipped. Last few songs instrumental..not so keen

I did not know that so much of this album was instrumental. Whoa.

It's not Bowie's best album. The second half is incredible, the first half... Mostly just goodish. Bit too much stodgy AOR rock, and honestly... Heroes (the song) is a teeny bit overrated. Probably in his best 20, but it's not even the best track on the album (it's V2 Schneider... Yes it is, you rockist bore, you). It's still a great song.

Not entirely what I look for, but I can't deny that it is good.

I'm a big Bowie fan and this album is really good but also a little uneven. It can feel disjointed to me because the second half gets much more experimental ambient and instrumental. This can work for me really well (Moss Garden) or not as much (Neuköln). The title track is one of my favorite songs ever though, so it's real difficult to give dock this one but I think as an overall album I'd go with 4/5 just because Bowie has so many albums I consider stronger as a whole piece. So, I've got to leave room for those. Standout Tracks: Joe the Lion, "Heroes", Sons of the Silent Age, Blackout, V-2 Schneider, Moss Garden, The Secret Life of Arabia

Pretty good

I had already heard this album (and liked it), but hadn't ever revisited the ambient tracks before. After re-listening to the full project once more, I think my rating now is still the same one I would have given it when I first heard it. Overall a great album! The title track is beautiful :')

Absolute classic. The instrumentals aren't as strong here as on Low, but the monumental production and legendary title track make this a more than worthy follow up.

Heel mooi.

me gusta

I enjoy this album a lot, but not nearly as much as Low. The first two songs and the last one don't do much for me, but the title track and the ambient pieces on the second side are fantastic.

Alltaf gott. Allt gott. Gott gott.

I'd argue "Low" is the better of these two albums, and I mention it only because of their obvious kinship in when, where, and who was involved in the release. But listening to this with a "critical" ear, it's fantastic. While I don't gravitate toward the instrumental second half, it merits recognition for its creativity and innovative spirit — not to mention its musical merit. It makes me so sad that Bowie's not around to keep making music and pushing boundaries. If you haven't checked out Blackstar, the album released as he was dying, give it a listen. It's a testament to his restless artistry to the very last breath.

Casi perfecto 9/10

The title track is easily one of the greatest songs ever written/recorded. Rest of the album is pretty great too

Album overall is ok, gets weird in the 2nd half. Heroes is such a good song, though, that I gotta give it 4 stars. Those loopy guitar chords, the steady rhythm, and Bowie's lyrics match perfectly and vividly capture the profound significance that the little moments of everyday life can have on us. It might be in my top 10 favorite songs of all time.

I love Bowie, and this album had some good stuff, and a couple absolute all time great songs. It's mid for 70's Bowie, although it would be spectacular did almost anyone else.

Art rock that is just enough experimental in a good way. Mood of the album swings back between gloomy and upbeat. Occasional guitar riffs and synths throughout. Album ends with 4 pleasant instrumental tracks. Standout is the title track which is 80's ballad-y in a good way.

Bizarre album. A few concepts within there which allows it to stand out.

I still just don't like Bowie that much... But this album surprised me. The instrumental tracks were awesome and with those this one is his best I've heard so far.

Classic landmark album

The title track alone is gold 4 stars right there. The rest of it is not so memorable. Gun to my head I couldn't name another one of the songs on this album I've had for nearly 40 years.

Secret Life of Arabia is banging

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Heroes (3) 2 - Blackout (5) 3 - Moss Garden (8)

7/10. Another good, but not great Bowie album. I could see this album growing on me, or starting to irritate me on a relisten. Moss garden was very pleasant.

Some good Bowie with a long stretch of ambient noise. 7/10

I find it funny that I rated the Eno album so low early on, but really dig the Eno / Bowie Trilogy. 4/5 for Heroes, Joe The Lion, Blackout, V2 Schneider.

An uneven album by one of the all time greats.

the more i listen, the less i like. patchy but heroes is one of the best written songs of all time, so there's that

Bowie mysteerinen ääni joutuna julkijumalaton julkisuus.. ihmiset kärsivät ja juotuvat kuuntelemana.. pakko ymmärtänä... Musiikista.. uniikkia.. hankala kuvitella musiikki sana ilman että bowie pötkykkää.. Tässä antana kaikkensa...

somewhat disappointed. the title track is one of my favorites, and i had hoped for more out of this album. still good, but not _all time_ good

Berlin Bowie is best Bowie. I think Low is the whole package and this one mostly peaks with the title track, but it’s still a great time. The man sounds as good as ever and I love the influences he balances here, especially the touches of jazz. A-

Fav track: V-2 Schneider 4/5

What a great album. I wasn't that familiar with this one, other than the obvious songs. But it came together so well. Some really punchy bops in there I didn't know so well and WHY because they're just so good. Just such an exceptional song writer

This particular Eno/Bowie collab might be my favorite. Great hooks and experimental arrangements: what more can you ask for? Apparently this is a controversial opinion, though, since hard core Bowie fans like others better and Bowie haters hate this album most? Who knew? I enjoy this take on layered, complex, synth pop. 4/5

Better than I expected. I had only heard Heroes the single. The only not so good part we’re the instrumentals in the back half.

strange but good

baita som

ethereal and sublime. bowie is his typical unique self with interesting lyrics and haunting vocal delivery. three instrumentals (in a row) is a bit much. overall, however, an enjoyable experience.

Challenging to score this. Heroes is so so good as a song. I like the instrumental tracks at the end even if they’re an odd fit. I guess I’m here for it all.

The Brian Eno second half got me, like, bleah, but the rest of those songs….*chef’s kiss* This meme-filled review has been brought to you by the letter $ and the number ¥.

Not gonna lie, the first couple of tracks are a little too cacophonous for me. Can't quite parse a lot of elements, and I'd have to be in a very specific mood to revisit them. However, the whole experience when coupled with the moody instrumentals later on brought more cohesion than I was initially expecting. A very light four. Fave tracks: Sons of the Silent Age

Fun and space-y. Not really my vibe.

Great hits and cool instrumentals but needs direction in later tracks

I really just haven't listened to enough Bowie

Really want to give it a 5 but it falls flat toward the end

Love the ambient sounds from Ziggy himself
