Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Apart from the peerless title track there is an awful lot of silliness on this record. Innovative Bowie was but sometimes you just want the tunes and the words to mean more. Its ok but there are other way better bowie albums than this mish mash
Great side 1. Not so great side 2.
Kyllä tämän ihan mielellään kuunteli, mutta Bowielta on parempaakin musaa olemassa.
Ei parasta Bowieta
Tasaista ⭐️⭐️⭐️. Bowien ääni on aina ollut karismaattinen.
It was pretty good in parts, but otherwise just alright
I've never listened to a Bowie record from start to finish other than Blackstar. Heroes could be one of my all time favourite songs. As a whole album does nothing for me though. Some pretty interesting recording techniques were used and it's pretty innovative but that doesn't translate to an enjoyable listen. My feeling is people are seeing Bowie and some sort of bias sets in. No way this is a 5* album. 2.5/5. Raising to a 3.
Wait, David Bowie?! Oh, wait, Brain Eno…
I want to give this a 4 but it's the instrumentals that drags it down. They are wonderful atmospheric songs that sounds like a score for an unproduced Horror movie with Bowie but they don't fit the rest of the album. The rest of album great I really dug it.
Not my favorite Bowie album
I’m not a Bowie fan so I have nothing to compare it to but the Bowie album I listened to yesterday and I liked yesterday’s record better. It was fine. Or more to accurately to say between the first half of pretty neat rock songs that I liked more than average and the rather slow instruments that I couldn’t really get into it averaged out to fine.
Not my favorite Bowie album, the first too songs are too dense to be enjoyable. V.2 and Sense of Doubt however are instrumental favorites.
the normal songs were alright. the instrumentals were strange. i don’t feel great about this one.
Loved the ambient tracks!
After listening to the opening track, 'Beauty and the Beast' I was hopeful it would live up to the standards of the titular track. Unfortunately it seemed to just fall a bit flat after that, it picked back up again towards the end but the middle of the album was a bit of a let down to be honest.
Robert Fripp and Brian Eno really bring it together to paint a gorgeous masterpiece for David Bowie. 3.5⭐️
Meh. Kind of bland outside of the popular songs. And even those are a little bland. 3 stars.
Ставлю традиційні 3 для Боуі.
I'm a Bowie fan, but I struggle with this era. This album feels so underdeveloped. After one go, I feel like it's a 2 but am willing to give DB the benefit of the doubt for a 2.5 since I believe it could possibly grow on me with repeated listens. And I'll round that to 3 stars (since fractions aren't allowed). 2.5/5 #159
What a strangely mediocre album
Some boring Bowie on this along with the obvious classic title track. V2-Schneider is great and the rest of the Eno stuff is cool as dark foreboding ambient goes. Doesn't need to be on the list
Was alright. Listened while mowing lawn so didn’t see all songs so don’t remember which ones, but a few good ones. Liked the instrumentals at the end. But definitely not my favorite Bowie album
First full album i listened to by Bowie, i can appreciate it for what it is just not my style
Heroes impecable.
This is some weird Bowie! There's some synth in this album that will make you question decisions that were made. Heroes is just a different style than you'd expect. There's a very 80s almost industrial sound even though this came a few years before. There were even some kinda cool ambient noise tracks. Standouts were the title track "Heroes," I kinda liked "V-2 Schneider" and "Moss Garden" was nice and contemplative and had an old school sci-fi vibe to it. I didn't love Heroes, but I didn't hate any of it, which puts it squarely in the 3 star realm. I appreciate Bowie trying something a little different here and it was probably pretty out there for the times, but this is not my favorite Bowie by any means.
One of the things I love about David Bowie is how much he changed up what he was doing. The downside of this, for me at least, is that when I'm listening to anything beside Ziggy Stardust, I kinda just want to be listening to that. Still, fucking legend.
i like bowie most when he doesn‘t sing and this had lots of that but it also seems really disjointed and nothing really sticks
Y’all, I struggle with Bowie. He’s got a great voice, the art is insanely interesting, the production is top notch. Why do I not love it? I want to love it, but it’s just ok for me and gets tedious after while. I don’t even know how to rate this very sane insanity.
Man, I'm torn on this one. I had some high hopes going into this, because I know and enjoy a number of Bowie songs already. For the first half of this album, it was a pretty good, synth-heavy experience. However, from "Sense of Doubt" through "Neuköln", it was purely instrumental experimental soundscapes. Now, instrumentals aren't inherently bad by any means. These tracks, however, just stripped all the energy that the first half of the album had. Some of that energy returned in the last song, "Secret Life of Arabia," but the previous three tracks really killed the flow for me.
3.5 stars First half is classic Bowie, second half experimental. This was released after Low in the same year - I think Low is the better and more interesting album. I actually really enjoyed this but “for Bowie” I think this is a weaker album. Heroes is great - as a kid who grew up in the 90s, I heard The Wallflowers’ version off the Godzilla soundtrack first. They cleaned it up and re-established a more traditional song structure. I like both the Wallflowers’ pop-ified radio-friendly version and Bowie’s rougher-around-the-edges original. Oh and it’s part of the Elephant Love Medley in Moulin Rouge so of course I love it!
Before I start this review, I want it on the record that I love David Bowie. I'm a huge fan. He's amazing. He's influential. He's iconic. I fucking love the Ziggy Stardust record. A one of a kind artist. But... I have really mixed feelings about this album. I know it's one of his most revered albums. This and Low are always held up as these monumental achievements. I honestly have mixed feelings about both of them, but I'll save the Low thoughts for when it inevitably is picked as part of this 1001 review extravaganza. Listening to Heroes is a bit like going to watch the 1992 Chicago Bulls. In the first half it all makes sense, it's magical even. Jordan is out there, doing iconic basketball shit. It's what you came to see. Then you go get a snack at half time, hit the bathroom, you're having a great time. But when you go back to your seat for the second half, you realize they're sitting Jordan. He's just chilling on the bench, casually shouting plays to Scotty Pippin and all those other players history forget. And sure Scotty Pippin and the rest of the 1992 Bulls are great at basketball and they're enjoyable to watch... but they're not Jordan. And things continue like this until the last 3 minutes and 46 seconds when Jordan hops back on the court, does some magic and they win the game. Sure it was still a good experience, but you kinda wish Jordan played all 60 minutes. Just like how I wish there weren't 4 instrumental songs on this album (4 out of 10), where Bowie doesn't say a word. He is an iconic vocalist and lyricist. Having him not sing on a track is kind of insane. And sure, those instrumentals are very good... but I still wish he was there singing on top of them. There's just something missing without him there. You could slap a different artist name on those tracks and I wouldn't be able to say, "NOO those are clearly Bowie instrumentals, how dare you". Because Bowie's musical style shifts constantly throughout his career, he's a bit of a chameleon, jumping between characters and musical sub-genres. But the thing that holds his whole cannon together is his unmistakable voice. He can sing on anything, any genre of instrumental and make it his own. And if you get rid of that, all your left with is some cool instrumental psychedelic rock... that doesn't feel like a Bowie track to me. Now the songs where he does sing, are very good... but not my favourite Bowie songs. Heroes is truly incredible of course. I'm not a contrarian on that. It gave me chills the first time listening through the album for this review. The more i listened to it, the more i felt it was an odd song, yet somehow it works as this huge pop anthem. When he starts to scream the lyrics in the second half, it's incredible. His performance blows me away. i've tried to do this song at karaoke and it's so hard to make it compelling for 5 minutes. It seems like an easy to song to sing, but what he brings to it is so incredible and magical. It's so hard to recreate at all. The rest of the album is hard to compare to the song Heroes. Nothing gets near the heights of that track. Weirdly, on some of the other tracks it feels like he's slacking a bit on the lyrics/melodies. There are just some clunky phrases that even David Bowie has trouble selling like "The secret life of arabia" orrr "sons of the silent age." Joe the Lion has this weird vocal section about greasy pipes where the melody has this goofy improvised jazz vibe to it that throws me off every time. The verses of Sons of the Silent Age are underwhelming, which is frustrating because i love the chorus so much (baby i'll never let you go...), it gives Hunky Dory vibes which is my other favourite bowie album. Blackout is a bit of mess vocally... sort of all over the place. Buttt the instrumentals for all of these tracks are incredible, just so groovy and cool. I just kinda wish David honed the lyrics and melodies more. I realize i spent the first half of the reviewing complaining that he wasn't singing and then I spent the back half saying he needed to put more effort into these tracks. I stand by it. Even a half baked Bowie vocal performance is better than no Bowie at all. And even though some of these tracks have some weak vocal moments, they also have incredibly strong moments that makes it all worth it. Ultimately... this is a 3.5 for me. Even a frustrating David Bowie album is better than most other albums. I'm going to round down though because he didn't sing on 4 god damn tracks. Side note (and another hot take): I do kind of see Bowie as more of a singles artist than an albums artist. Yes, he has Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust... but the rest of this albums are a bit of a mixed bag for me. The singles though are so fucking incredible. Some of the greatest songs ever written. I could listen to Modern Love every day of my life. But i couldn't put on the Let's Dance album every day...
Title track (as great as it is) is the only notable track
Average Bowie. Not great Bowie, not terrible Bowie.
I get why this album is considered one of the top 1001 albums but when you dig into it and listen to it, there aren’t that many strong songs. I almost feel like it’s 50% music and 50% filler
Dominated by the title song. Can't hear what's so good about the album tracks. You can smell the heroin, though!
I thought the variety was better than some other Bowie albums that we have had.
Not my choice of music but it was ok
Another day, another Bowie album I don’t get.
another Bowie album & I still don't get the appeal
Not like I'm discovering this for the first time, but it's Bowie, obviously I like it. I like the last part especially for the instrumentals, that's what sticks out to me. But other than that, his music isn't for me unless I listen to it a lot, which I haven't with this album. It's alright.
Heroes es basicamente el unico tema, pero que temazo hermano
3.0 - Ok
What is the point to these instrumentals? Half of them album is 20 minutes straight of these. Makes it worse when they sound like utter gross The actual songs are pretty good, with my favourites being the opening and ending tracks. So why you gotta ruin it David?
The instrumentals felt out of place and unnecessary
What's with the last half of this album? (43 known/91 new)
A bit of a weak start, but really strong middle and end.
Bom álbum, as duas instrumentais no fim são bem legais
There's some good bops here but also some weird stuff which I guess is to be expected from Bowie. The more I listen to Bowie the more polarizing I find his music, is it good or is it just the Bowie effect?
I've always been fairly indifferent to Bowie, cherry picking some songs here and there. I was pretty indifferent to this album too.
The song is good but I don't see what the fuss is about. Perhaps I just didn't get it.
Started and ended very strong but a lot of the middle section was a bit too abstract for me to fully connect with it. I appreciated the experimental elements, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations overall.
hm ye
Want to love this more, but to my ears it’s not something I want to listen to.
I enjoyed the part where he stopped singing (not joking)
Need to listen to more Bowie to gain a better appreciation. Nothing boring about this album, but didn’t move me. Probably need to listen again and more intently. I know Bowie and this album was groundbreaking, but, with some exceptions, I don’t love this record. Recognize the great musicianship though.
Very hood but not his best
Bowie was obviously a genius but this is a pretty weird album. And that's speaking as somebody who has given five stars to Can and Zappa so far during this challenge.
A solid Bowie construction. Complete with some of excellent composition, witty hooks, and distracting instrumentals. Overall, solid and interesting.
The second half of this album gave me anxiety but that was probably a combination of my own headspace and walking at dusk while listening. Solid album!
I found this to be kind of a lackluster Bowie album. Didn't feel particularly inspired and the tracks blend together. I was enjoying a track at the end until I found out that the album had ended and autoplay had queued up a track from Hunky Dorey.
Not a big Bowie fan.
Should have ditched the instrumentals and combined this with Low.
cute David <3
This was his TWELFTH album? Jeeze. The title track is the best track on the album and was my fave Bowie track for a long time. Sense of Doubt through Neukoln almost sound like they could have been included in a Daft Punk or ambient lyric-less Radiohead album.
Heroes the song is amazing, the album was good but the instrumentals on the back half were a bit wierd and boring. I’ll try it again later, but I still love the production of Bowie.
this is the first of the berlin trilogy that i’ve heard, the intro was great and the title track is obviously amazing, the disc 2 instrumentals didn’t really seem to fit in with the vibe and just felt a little bit in the way, it takes a lot away from the value of the album i found, i enjoyed a lot of the songs but as a whole album i wouldn’t say its bowie’s best, cover is beautiful 3.5/5
I'm really sorry, but I don't really like this album. Yes, the title track is one of Bowie's best songs. But the rest.... No, I kind of like the experimental Eno-tracks but I can's stand the opening dup 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Joe the lion'. My god, who thought these ugly choruses were a good idea? And Robert Fripp's guitar sound - mangled through a synthesizer, I think - is ugly as hell.
Title track is one of my favorite songs of all time. So, so, so good. The rest of the album is a bit of a shrug. Liked the instrumental songs on the second side. A bit hard to remember what 1977 and a divided Berlin felt like.
Good
I almost wrote this album off until the instrumental tracks. Still not my favorite Bowie album, but can’t say it’s not interesting.
Get rid of tracks 6-9 and replace with something more worthwhile (ie the rest of the album) and then you get 4 stars.
wow a bowie album i don’t immediately hate
When I was in college, I got wine drunk, blacked out, and my only memory was sitting on the couch and crying while Heroes played in the background. David Bowie had only died a few months prior, and the song was enough to move me to tears. The song will forever hold a meaningful place in my life, however, ranking the album anything higher than a 3 would be blatant Bowie bias.
Mostly good.
Ainda não chegou o disco da música dele que amo, rs! Mas falando propriamente desse disco, é inegável a capacidade deste homem.
Couldn't connect all that much with the sung songs however I really enjoyed the purely instrumental or snythetic songs!
I’m not the biggest Bowie fan but I can enjoy this album from time to time.
Interesting album, good instrumental tracks at the end. Definitely a vibe
Blind album? I dont think I've listened to the whole thing before but know the hits. The back half seemed to drag for me but decent.
Kinda boring at start. Last 3 tunes were pre good thi
It’s not bad, but this is not my favorite work from Bowie. Parts of it feel a little sluggish, but there are definitely some enjoyable moments too. 2.5 rounded up to 3 stars.
Good album, I enjoyed it. Love the music for the song Heroes too.
Nothing wrong with the album just not too much that was compelling either!
Well that's not what I expected. It's such a bizarre album that feels like a mix between Lou Reed and maybe Kate bush? Listening to the title track I don't think I ever realized how weird that song was either. Is it interesting? Sure. Would I have been pissed off if I bought it only hearing the single? Definitely. Drugs make you do some wild shit.
Okay, not the best David Bowie, but still a heroic album that got me into the grooves.
I didn't realize how much Preoccupations singer is biting Bowie until now. All the poppy songs I like on this are rendered redundant by the existence of Talking Heads. When it becomes a spacey freak jazz album I love it
Not my favourite Bowie album. Overhyped due to Heroes.
I think my 16-17 year old self would've really fucked with the song "Heroes". I still think it's quite alright now... because Brian Eno co-wrote it HAHAHA Second half of this is basically and Eno ambient album?
Probably his best album so far
I bought this album on cassette in the early 80's and probably got it in the bargain bin. As with many of the pre-recorded cassettes at the time (I have several Bowie tapes), the tape has tightened and only plays if you shake it and even then it warbles. I was hoping it for a more enjoyable experience, but at the time I felt it had only one good song and a lot of uninteresting and boring filler. Of Bowie's mid-late 70's albums this has aged well. Listening now, there are multiple songs I enjoy and recognize and though it loses steam towards the end, it has a sonic energy and mature songwriting I may have overlooked before. It resonates for me more now and though I don't consider this a must-hear, it is worthwhile and the title track alone is one of his best.
Really great songs, but the instrumental tracks felt a bit weird. Close to 4!
2.6 Never been a huge Bowie fan
Cover: 3 Good experimental chill album. Not spectacular, at least on first listen.
One thing I’ve learned from doing this is I’m not as into Bowie’s Berlin trilogy as I thought I was. Heroes is a cracking song, and I really like the instrumentals that close out the album, but otherwise I found the rest of it quite lacking. Not bad by any means, but merely okay.
Really like the second half of the album and the ambient/experimental stuff. First half is great too. But I’d never heard that part of Bowie’s work before and glad I did.
Great listen. The second half is so good with experimental/avant-garde stuff that I never knew Bowie had made.
Class
Love Bowie, but not my fave
It wasn’t too bad
I love the title track of course, but hadn’t heard the rest of this album surprisingly. The instrumental tracks near the end were a vibe, but this one was a little inconsistent for me.
Interesting album that took a more ambient turn at the end. It was a solid album though, especially the first half
The song "Heroes" itself is a masterpiece, obviously. But the rest of the album I could do without... especially the last 4 songs.
ok fun but the back half is entirely like, instrumental meditation music of sorts, and that one doesn't really hit
Classic stuff, some real “weird” songs thou!!!
Pretty experimental.
some decent tunes but bowie has much better albums
3/5 one or two good songs there were some instrumentals that I didn’t love
This really did grow on me. The instrumentals were my favorite. The full songs less so as they were a bit too wanky for my taste. With more listening this may have gone up to a 4 start - but going with three for now
Started off and ended strong, but got kind of weird in the middle. 3*
Good album, it flows together, it has a track that was a hit. But it also has some moments that kind of take you out of the album such as in Neukoln. It made it hard to come back in on The Secret Life of Arabia. Heroes and Sons of the Silent Age though are awesome.
Not my favorite kind of music but Bowie has an undeniable voice. I prefer the second half of the album when it transitions to something much more experimental in nature and tone. Some of the tracks there are downright haunting.
It’s Bowie so it’s definitely not bad but it’s not that memorable either. Except for the title track. The instrumentals are good and interesting but I generally gravitate towards songs with words and on a lot of those, Bowie sounds a bit tired. I prefer Low or Lodger as far as the Berlin trilogy is concerned.
It's a decent album where he starts to experiment. Heros is good and secret life of Arabia is decent
not sure if this would even make my Top 10 Bowie albums. That being said, that's pretty stiff competition.
Good tunes, great artist, good album.
This was less bad than other Bowie albums that have come up, but didn't really resonate with me. I think in the right context I might have enjoyed it more though, so I'll give it a 3
Gear: Grado Hemp Artwork: 🫱✋📸 Production (1999 Remaster): 🎧😘🤌 Music: 🦸♂️🧱🇩🇪 Rating: 🧑🎤👨🎤👩🎤/5
Ok album but totally morphed into something at the end. Kind of odd to do such a radical change.
also mid
J'ai moins aimé que ce que je pensais, plutot cool quand meme
The Eno influence is definitely apparent toward the end of the album. The front half hits like a giant wall of sound - very busy. This juxtaposition helps the album feel like a journey of listened straight through but it's also... Like why does the sound completely change?
Dark and dangerous, but also too theatrical. I just don't LOVE Bowie.
3.5- enjoyable parts, needed multiple listens to really get it. Enjoyed the instrumentals
Halfway thru album is just a instrumental
Like a 7/10 Three songs were fire but too many instrumentals 1) Sons of the Silent Age 2) Heroes 3) Blackout
This one didn't quite land for me, both halves of the album sound nice enough but I don't find myself wanting to listen again. On side one I like Beauty and the Beast and Heroes but the rest are forgettable, and on side two I think the ambient soundscape thing is interesting but not really for me.
How many Bowie albums are on this list?!?!
Way better than expected - actually nice to listen to during work aswell. Couple of vibes!! 3/5 - some weird nothing songs in the middle
Solid, but his best work is yet to come.
bowie doing his best bowie impression
I remember getting a bunch of Bowie on vinyl, and this was the first one I listened to and realized that maybe I didn’t like ALL of David Bowie’s discography. There’s some good stuff on here and some definitely throwaway stuff (meandering ambient noise tracks). Better than some of the other stuff on this list though. It’s probably worth a relisten, so I’ll bump it up to 3?
No one really likes David Bowie the jazzy ambient artist, dont they? Probably decades before his time, though, and Heroes is one of the greatest songs ever written.
I like bowie most of the time and that's here along with all this ambient stuff. Mostly ambient bullshit. That I'm not into. But the albums namesake is good classic bowie. Just feels like he wrote 4 and a half songs and made it work for a whole album. Not my favorite but still has some good
Not as good as I had hoped. Hopefully his most underwhelming release.
It gets 3 stars for “Heroes” alone. Quite liked “The Secret Life of Arabia” too. The rest was utter nonsense.
Really do not enjoy listening to David Bowie. Not saying that it's objectively bad, but that kind of 70s pop rock is really not for me. But the second half of the record was a nice surprise-- the ambient / instrumental tracks (I guess the parts of the album that Brian Eno did) are great. If I was rating them separately, the first half would be 2 stars and the second half 4.
Did not listen to most, but I liked it in general. Havent listened to much Bowie before. There are some songs on here that are surprisingly experimentalish?
I wasn't blown away by this. I liked some of the theatrics in the first half and some of the bold instrumentation on the back half of the record but I didn't feel like there was anything here that really hooked me
I've never sat down and listened to this record, despite recognising what is (probably) Bowie's most iconic album cover. Of course, I'd heard Heroes before. Honestly, I think this record is really overrated. "Low" shits all over this thing. For all the high points of this record - like Heroes, Sense of Doubt/Moss Garden, etc. - there's an equal amount of lows. I'm mainly concerning the start of this record, which gets off to a less than great start. Joe the Lion was a bad song. Not going to sugarcoat that. Taking the above into consideration, did I still enjoy myself nevertheless? Absolutely. I think it's a very nice piece of art. It's wild to me that there's only one 'hit' on this thing, since Bowie is a hits guy. That's nice though, I don't often want to sit down and listen to an entire Bowie album in one sitting. I definitely don't see myself hurrying back to listen to this one though. I'm probably looking at a 3 here. Sorry mate.
I honestly think David Bowie is more widely appreciated as a pop culture phenomenon and all round odd bloke than he is a musician. 3 obvious dickprints in a kids movie out of 5
Some fun Bowie. The classic Heroes is on the album and it's hard to deny. A few instrumentals towards the end that kind of felt out of place, but good album overall
I like some of it but its not my favourite. Feels like I need to love it when I don't
22/04/2025 Not a fan of the Bowie, this was okay.
93/1089 - Pretty boring, but I'm used to his voice now which will make listening to 7 more Bowie albums more bearable.
Heroes is good
Meditativt. Inte mycket bra förutom Heroes?
Good album. Definitely see it's worth but I think he has better
I expected something better...
He was cookin' and then he went off the rails a little bit and somewhat saved it with the last song. Less Ambient Jazz, more Heroes.
I liked probably a solid 40% of this album and would listen again, but would have no problem skipping some songs
Maybe I don’t like early David Bowie?
Man, he really was so ahead of the curve. Not expecting the back half of this to just be ambient instrumental.
I love Bowie so much but this is definitely not my favourite of his records. I find quite a bit of it drones on and while interesting doesn’t particularly work for me. Still certainly well worth listening to though! (3.5 stars)
Liked the style and vocals
first somg is cool
Great front half with iconic songs, and an okay-ish back half.
point2.
I *just* had my 8th Bowie album and now... my NINTH?! Jesus, what the fuck? Did Bowie really record 1% of all the albums you must listen to before you die? He's good. I love some much of his work, including much of this album. But he's not THAT good.
including David-Bowie-bonus
5/10
Zavid, he's one of my faves, massively influenced my musical interests. However, haven't ever been drawn to this album and it's not my favourite iteration of Bowie. Listening again confirms this, some lovely ones on there but not a no-skips album for me
Previously rated: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (4/5) Aladdin Sane (3/5) The Next Day (3/5) Young Americans (3/5) Station to Station (3/5) Hunky Dory (4/5) Low (3/5) ************************************************************************ Eighth Bowie album. Another half-good one. The mostly ambient soundscape of side two did nothing for me.
legalzinho, mas depois de ouvir ziggy stardust, esse ficou um pouco abaixo
David Bowie albums are such vibes. You always know you're going to get some eclectic wild different stuff, and you're going to hear 20 albums influences in it. This is much the same, just wasn't my favorite bowie album. But heroes is a banger.
It is hard not to compare an artist to their best when they are so prolific. The album is good but not great. David Bowie is great not good.
Second half of this went a bit on the bizarre side of things but it was a reasonable record. Hunky Dory is still the best one I've had from Bowie on this list though
Love Bowie, but aside from the title track, this isn't my favorite album.
Klassiker
Some great stuff on this. It's let down by the instrumentals, which don't do it for me at all. So even though it's Bowie, that brings it down to 3 stars.
6/10 Favorites: Heroes, Sons of the Silent Age, V-2 Schneider Least Favorite: Sense of Doubt, Blackout, Moss Garden
It might be fatigue from all of the relatively similar albums, but this one was less fun than the ones that came before. As I've familiarized myself with this period of the 70s, the sounds are similar, always fun and exciting. Still an enjoyable album to listen to, but with a bit of a lower grade. 3/5
Good
Certainly interesting. Heroes is great but the rest, not my favorite. And musical experience to say the least. He experimented with sound…sometimes bordering on cacophony. Wouldn’t come back to.
haven't finished listening yet but I don't love this album and am going with a 3 so far bc it's DB
This album covers some ground from Krautrock "Moss Garden" to "Heroes," a classic. While it doesn't feel like the Bowie experience I'm used to, I did start to get into it after a couple of listens. Especially the songs that were pure ambiance.
Well, here’s the thing… First listen, something grabbed me and made me think “hey! is this great? I need to re-listen, but much louder, and in a much smaller space.” So I did, and then I did again, but that same thing never came back to grab me. BUT, I feel like I finally actually HEARD the title track for the first time in my life, and that was pretty incredible. It’s not David Bowie’s fault that I don’t like this more (yet).
I've never been a fan of David Bowie's music, and while I enjoyed Station to Station when I heard it a few months back, this album mostly left me cold. There was a couple of tracks that I quite enjoyed, so I'll give it three stars rather than two.
Heros was a good song. Good drums throughout. Rest is alright.
Being Bowie, I wish I'd liked this more. There's a couple of great songs, but the rest was just kinda "meh".
Favorites: - Moss Garden Leuk! Vond de liedjes zonder tekst wel het leukst.
Om eerlijk te zijn vond ik het soms een beetje intens en chaotisch. Maar ik heb het gevoel dat het minder wordt wanneer je het meer luisterd.
Enjoyable but more experimental than I thought it would be. It kind of went along peacefully and I listened to it as background.
Wasn’t sold from the first half but the instrumental journey the second half took me on made it worthwhile for me. Really glad I listened to this album. Perfection from “Sense of Doubt” onwards. Did like some of the lyrical songs as well such as “Heroes”
The first half is a better then average Bowie album. The second half is just wtf. 5/10
Sometimes I use the word 'experimental' to describe music that's new or strange to me, but in actuality, a lot of the time, that music is pretty polished and refined. It's just a little out there and weird. On the other hand, certain David Bowie albums feel truly experimental. This album and "Low" (both released in 1977) have songs that sound as if Bowie and company genuinely didn't know what sounds they were going to make before they made them. There are lots of unusual effects in the music, and sometimes your brain needs a moment to adjust to them. There are a bunch of songs where the beat is crunchy and sounds like it was made by a machine. Paradoxically, a lot of those songs also have a funky style to them. And there's a big, cavernous sound in the production that makes me wonder if a lot of post-punk bands looked to these albums for inspiration. Near the end of the album, there are a few ambient tracks, which feel very exploratory and experimental. The title track is the clear standout. Great song with a beautiful, big sound. I also really enjoyed "V-2 Schneider" and "The Secret Life of Arabia."
Nice album, it's Bowie so you know you're going to get quality tunes with interesting ideas and special moments. My gripe at times with his sound is that sometimes it feels a bit zany for the sake of being zany. Almost like what we saw and heard a lot in the late 1970's where electronic instruments were becoming popular / mass produced and because of it there emerged so many artists that felt compelled to add them to their sound for what seemed like the sole reason of embracing this new shiny thing. I get that vibe sometimes from Bowie where he can have a song that is fundamentally great but then at the production stage a little too much gets added. This album for example, the first song "Beauty and the Beast" really lets you on to thinking that there's going to be some jam packed songs with a ton of ideas, layers, and sound elements... and the song is just OK in my opinion. But then three minutes later you get the title track "Heroes" and it's so simply beautiful. It's his voice, a simple drumbeat, a block-chord piano part, and a wonderful optimistically sad spacey guitar part in the distance. There's not so many things going on to take your attention away from the song itself, or from his voice.. and the outcome is a song that is one of Bowie's best. It's unfortunate in my opinion that the rest of the album didn't stick with this kind of vibe. A high 3/5 for me, like just enough for it to not be able to round up to a 4. "Heroes" is a really great song, but the others don't do enough for me to be blown away, and honestly I've heard several covers of the song that I think are better than the original.
Underwhelming
Some good songs and some creepy instrumental songs.
I have to admit that I am a little sad about this album. It’s one of those that I know I should have listened to already but I never have. So I was quite excited when it came up. The reason I am a bit sad about the album? I just didn’t click with it and therefore I didn’t really enjoy it and I feel a bit bad about that cause it’s held in such high regard.
Probably my least favourite of the Berlin trilogy, but "Hero's" is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Not David's best. CBA with Eno's bullshit
I enjoyed this and thought it was tastefully psychedelic
Had listened to the album before on vinyl. Torn. First side is great, David Bowie normally is. The B side can bite me.
Heroes is a ripper. The rest aight.
Was super excited to get this when I saw it last night, but unfortunately was a lot different from what I was expecting. I will give it praise, for an album that was composed on the spot in the studio, and lyrics being written as he was in front of the microphone, the album sounds insanely cohesive with a flow between the songs, to the point where halfway through I was curious if it was a concept/rock opera with a ton of time and thought put behind it. That said, the biggest issue I have with this record is the production. It's a lot, raw, and its loud. I'm not a big fan of electronics that sound raw and grating, I prefer electronics to be a little more produced in sound (but not so much that it becomes soulless). The first two tracks were the ones most heavily affected by that, so I didn't care much for them. The next 3 tracks were solid, with Heroes (classic song) and Blackout being my favorites. Then the next couple tracks felt kinda like nothing tracks. Honestly wasn't huge on the instrumentals either. They didn't feel fully fleshed out, but the detraction isn't necessarily from that fact as I don't think there was more to be done, it goes back to the album feeling like a rock opera. What the instrumentals are missing is a movie/story to be set to them. Overall, solid record, just not really for me unfortunately, which is a bummer because I love Bowie and Heroes is a classic song.
A side amazing, B side not
Not his best but it's still Bowie.
Classic album. I met a super fan once who completely put me off Bowie however sadly.
Least favourite of the Berlin trilogy. Back half is mostly noise and then a song about Arabia...which kind of slaps to be fair
This is like modern art. I’m sure it’s good and groundbreaking, but I just don’t get most of it.
I don't see the genius tbh
Another heavy hitter - this time 13 albums after the last one. According to my analysis of the 1001albumsgenerator.com economy, the popular, innovative albums that really earn their spots on this list appear once every 15 - 20 albums. That's not me complaining, as I like the slowburn journey and the opportunity to listen to albums that I would never listen to in a million, billion years across all alternate timelines and parallel universes. I've listened to Bowie years ago - specifically Ziggy, though I didn't like it. I've become more favourable to the album in the years since. I think this list is a good opportunity for me to re-evaluate my opinion on David Bowie. What better way to start than with what is one of his most acclaimed albums? "Heroes" is very competent on the whole. A lot of unusual melodies and an effective use of guitars. It's difficult for me to isolate specific aspects of this album that I like as all of the instruments work together like clockwork. However, I'm not yet sold on Bowie as a vocalist. His performances are certainly iconic, though something about his voice is uniquely off-putting to me. I wasn't interested in listening to the lyrics at all as a consequence. The second half of this album was a very big surprise. I don't have an exact hold on who David Bowie is as an artist or character, though I was expecting the album to be a purely pop rock affair. "Sense of Doubt" comes out of nowhere with an ominous, perturbed sound and "Moss Garden" takes the concept further with a stab at an ambient, atmospheric song. I really like the latter track for it's "cosmic" sound, which is an interest of mine that has been spurred on entirely by this list. I liked this album, but I'm not crazy enough about it to where I'd consider giving this a 4. I am also writing these words in public, where I don't have a coin of indecision to do the heavy lifting for me. I'm going to resort to dangerous, life-threatening measures that I may never recover from: racking my brain. 3. This is one of the most consistent albums that I've listened to through this site, but I'm undecided on whether this album will stick with me in the long run. I am favourable to giving this a relisten a little later down the line. Maybe when I'm recommended the next Bowie album through this site.
obvi a classic, but the one song is far better than the sum of the album
It was great when he wasn't singing. Although the last track SLAPPED.
I expected to like this more
David Bowie is always a pleasure, but this album was just kinda meh for me. Don't get me wrong -- it's well above most of albums from most other artists, but for a Bowie album, it's a little weak. Some of the tracks were absolutely awesome (eg. Heroes, Beauty and the Beast, Sons of the Silent Age), but others just felt like a lot of noise and could have used some serious editing before release. The balance between the awesome tracks and the cruft yields three stars in my book.
For it being such a classic, I certainly expected to like it more. Can only say I loved the title track and the others... not so much
79% Best: Beauty and the Beast; Heroes; The Secret Life of Arabia Must-Hear? Almost
Iconic cover and title Track. I like the atmospheric songs in the latter half which are an extention of the Low album that I cherish. I find many songs on this album to be a mixed bag and feel a bit rough or directionless. Heroes and Blackout are my favorites though but this is an album I seldom revisit despite being a huge Bowie fan.
The first track sounded a bit like Talking Heads. The next sounded like "Metal Bowie" so... like Tin Machine. "Heroes," the song, is glorious - lovely guitar from Robert Fripp. The other songs are okay. There is a long instrumental bit which has three titles but feels like one piece - a bit like on Low which we had on here before, I think. Yeah. It's okay.
Fan of Bowie but not this album.
Was expecting more TBH. It's still Bowie, though, so how bad could it be?
This was a stereotypical Bowie album - experimental, unique, soulful and true to form. I didn't expect the album to have so much instrumental songs on the track list, which sounded quite ethereal. At times, it felt as though I was listening to an ambient album, especially with the third and second last tracks. It sounds Arabian inspired, I wonder if it was. Obviously Heroes is a stomper tune, one of his best. Beauty and the Beast was good too and I liked the piano motifs that tie the album together. However, I don't know if maybe I just wasn't in the mood for the sound this album gives but it just didn't do much for me, compared to his other stuff. I felt a bit restless half way through but again, I am a bit agitated today so maybe that's why. The album started out strong but kind of withered for me a little towards the end. Still though, it's David Bowie so even when he's not at his best, he's still pretty good.
Has a great start with a bad ending. The first half of the album felt like it was typical Bowie and included heroes! The second half was a lot of instrumentals and was not as interesting (also felt a bit empty). Don't know if this one needed to be on the list.
So I love David Bowie. But this album just didn’t really catch me - too 70s?? To much synth?? It’s hard to say.
Honestly I had such high expectations for this but it fell kinda flat for me, I was expecting Heroes level beauty and it just never reached that outside of that one song.
3.5 It’s not my favorite Bowie, and it’s kind of a one song album, but that song is fucking “Heroes” so that gets you pretty far. Also I enjoyed the ambient stuff on side 2! Also also I say side 2 because I actually got to listen to this one on vinyl! Always nice when I can do that!
sonic journey i wasn't expecting, kind of trancey at times! fun vibe for night shift but kind of got a little too trancey. I'll have to re-listen in a diff environment.
Love the title track, otherwise meh.
I like all of Bowie's albums. Don't have this one in my library. Listening to it on Spotify, I can see why. Not one of my favorites. Not bad, just not melodic and kind of loud.
Interesting how I don’t really know this record other than the single “Heroes “ considering how well I know his other work. Hearing a lot of timbres from Eno’s Another Green World. Sons of the Silent Age kind of reminds me of early Bowie, unadorned vocals and narrative. Interesting layered vocal harmonies throughout.
Uneven. Didn’t love the ambient stuff other than Moss Garden. Title track is a banger.
I tried so hard to like this album but I failed. I love the title track though.
Has it's moments, but it lack energy, in my opinion. The opening song is really fun, and I wish all the others were like it. I also wasn't a huge fan of the ambient part in the second half. 7/10
Boring.
I liked it? I’m confused a little bit, but overall I enjoyed this album. The first two songs weren’t my favorite, but they did come across like Bowie songs without a doubt. Obviously “Heroes” being the single here is a given, and it’s a beautiful song. I do think “Blackout” is the sleeper pick here. I loved everything about that track.. the background vocals, Bowie’s inflection changes, the guitar and electronic sound. Then we get into the random instrumentals. I felt they started off with the highest of highs with “V-2”(I loved this so much) and then after that I was just kinda questioning what was going on. Had to keep checking to see if more was coming on the album. Overall, classic David Bowie and a good album.
hm… i like this album less than i remember. Low is definitely the highlight of the Berlin Trilogy for me.
I like the song heroes and the song number 6 to nine
2.5ish.
This is like the 75th Bowie album I've rated on this list and they are all basically the same: very impressive, but not for me.
I enjoyed the second half more than the first half I think. Singles on this album are really good, but it is the second section that stood out to me. Moss Garden an outlier.
Very much enjoyed title track, everything else not terrible but rather meh too.
Not my type
Disco medio raro, tiene canciones "normales" al principio, después salta a un par muy experimentales y termina con otra canción más clásica.
A mix of enjoyable and less enjoyable songs. The title track ‘heroes’ is one that I would listen to again. The instrumental/ ambient musics were a welcome surprise following some of the eerie and somewhat overwhelming songs. There were some intriguing features such as talking with little musicality I.e. not singing, over the rich layers of instrument playing, as well as some synthetic sound effects. The lyrics felt a bit cryptic. There were probably a lot of culture references that the lyrics alluded to but I did not understand; nothing in the music was helping me to understand them either.
One Banger, couple of fine songs, and a few shit filler songs.
Like the electronic half better that the standard rock half. It was not my favorite Bowie
Some great songs but overall I'm a bit less impressed
Heroes stands out, but the rest was not particularly impressive
Heroes is a great song but rest of the album was kind of meh
I didnt like the first half and almost gave up on it, but the 2nd half of the album was some really prime concept stuff. Simply fantastic. Averages out to a solid 3 stars
I know this is a classic and I should love it, and I am sure it blew peoples minds at the time but for me it has a couple of good tunes on and some others which are interesting but its not going to the top of my list I am afraid.
Perfectly decent album
Second of Bowie’s Berlin series and my first listen through. Didn’t know what to expect and ran along with on the treadmill. Title track is still iconic and stands out as the albums main single. Side B is all instrumental except for the final song which wasn’t necessarily my jam for the time listening but had I listened as a brooding teen or in a remote listening experience instead of on a treadmill, it may have struck more of a chord. Fun fact: Robert Fripp, lead guitarist from King Crimson is on guitar for this album.
I know this album is a big deal but it just seems disjointed on first listen. Going to have to try it a few more times and try and figure out what Bowie was thinking
Its cool, although a little disjointed. Very heavy on the instrumental songs towards the end of the album, when they could perhaps been a bit more spread out. Still Bowie though, so it's still cool, and it gives you some songs that you couldn't possibly hear from another artist. Best: Heroes Worst: Blackout
definitely liked the first half way more than the second. The songs were more straightforward.
Surprisingly haven’t actually listened to this one all the way through before! The second half is almost entirely instrumental which I was really not expecting. Definitely preferred the first half. Standout songs include: Beauty and the Beast, Heroes, Blackout, The Secret Life of Arabia
Not all things can be winners. A couple great songs, but nothing earth shattering.
Fun, some great stuff, weird instrumental section
No private session needed here. I am a big fan of Bowie, but I don't think this one is in my top five Bowie albums. Not an insult to Bowie, but praising his other albums and productivity. "Heroes" is the stand out in the album and the album was graced with that title, otherwise meh, not his best.
Second half all but the last song is ambient tracks which is pretty cool and unexpected, Kraftwerk inspiration on V2 as well, first half is also good, follows very classic 40 minute rock album standard with 5 songs a side but the actual content is unique
Okay — his voice kinda bugs me but some good songs and riffs
title track is amazing and the first half is good, but the instrumental tracks on the second half are boring
I think I have to re listen later. some really fun songs (Heroes, Beauty and the Beast) but mostly mid
This is really a tale of two albums. Side one being more conventional Bowie, complete with the usual art/experimental rock from the time. Side two shifts into ambient mode, full of mostly dark and gloomy instrumentals. You can hear Brian Eno's presence here (whether you like his work or not). This album seems to be the second release in Bowie's "Berlin Trilogy", but I'm not familiar with the others at the moment. Perhaps those follow a similar theme as heard here, but I just found side two to be a bit tedious.
Pretty good listen until we get to the experimental atmospheric instrumentals starting with Sense of Doubt. Heroes is a classic.
7/10
Some songs I liked, but a lot that just passed me by.
To veldig distinkte sider av albumet her. Side 1 er skikkelig Bowie, men med unntak av tittelsporet (som er kult) preller det raskt av for min del. Side 2 er for det meste instrumental, var nais å jobbe til!
Not my favorite Bowie that this list has given me. Some songs are good, like Joe the Lion and I kind of like The Secret Life of Arabia even though it's probably the most simple here. I feel like he is flexing his artistic side with the Eno instromentals here, and I don't think they fit the album super well. But artist is gonna art.
Heroes 4/5 but I never cared for his musical style, too much talking. But his style was his own and also ever changing. Still to my taste 3/5 only
This album was fine. It's the 2nd Bowie album I've gotten , with Station to Station being the first. I didn't care for Bowie then, and I still don't now. I think his music just isn't my thing, and this album didn't sway me one way or another. Favorite track: Sons of the Silent Age
"Heroes" is the 12th studio album by David Bowie, originally released in 1977. This record came out during a great period of creativity from Bowie, also known as the "Berlin Trilogy". I believe this is the second in that trilogy of records. I have not yet listened to all of them, but this one stands out amongst other Bowie albums I've heard. The production places fairly heavy emphasis on electronics and has and overall "new wave" feel, something that wouldn't become popular until the 80s. Side two of the record is also comprised of almost all instrumental tracks, which I don't think Bowie had done prior to this. I feel as though the songwriting was a bit lacking. Apparently a lot of the lyrics weren't penned until Bowie was in front of the mic, and it kinda shows. Overall, cool production, lackluster lyrics. Heroes is a great track though
Experimental instrumentals are one thing, but when they involve a saxophone - I’m out! Disappointing album and surely not his finest by a long way. Top track: Heroes
Obviously Heroes the track is fantastic, but the rest really isn’t that interesting. Having listened to ‘Low’, which is much better, did we really need this in the list as well? Come on list, let’s just finish this up with Ziggy and Hunky Dory, we’ll all be happy, and we can let some other bands have a turn.
Some good songs but overall not amazing
Heroes is a fantastic song, but the rest of the album is just fine.
80s stuff, just not my jam
It was fine. This has been our 3rd Bowie album and I have yet to hear one to make me understand all the hype around him. Here's to hoping one of his other albums is in the project and knocks it out of the park.
The title track is an all-time Bowie classic. That aside, some of my favourite tracks are the instrumentals. Otherwise, not my favourite effort from Bowie. 3/5.
Such an odd mixture of parts, which come together to form an abstract experience.
One listen probably doesn't do it justice - quite arty, somewhat obscure, very Bowie
Better than Black Star, less good than Ziggy Stardust
Standout classics are found on this album but it's far from his best. It's the kind of Bowie album that makes me scared of listening to full Bowie albums. Best of Bowie is the best way to listen to Bowie.
The beginning was good, but you lost me at the end. 3.3.
I'll be honest, I didn't listen because I've heard it quite a lot before and I'm just not that into Bowie, although I appreciate it's an important and decent album
I like individual songs but as a whole its alright
Heros is a 5 star song. I also really liked the instrumental/soundscape half of this album. The boppy songs are kinda meh.
Slightly disappointed from this record. The instrumentals on the backside are probably the highlights from it, while the first half doesn't do much for me. 6/10
First half is amazing and threatening to be one of bowies best ever. but then Brian eno comes crashing in like a freight train with the double threat of moss garden and neukoln to totally ruin side 2. Secret life of Arabia is ok though.
50/50, on this one
Certainly not the best Bowie has in offer but still a solid album and the best of the Berlin era. I know this album is recorded in Hansa Studios in Berlin and they hold a special place in my heart.
A few great songs but did not love the whole album.
what jake said minus the meh
Aside from the iconic title track, there isn't much to bother about with Heroes. It's fine, especially the first half, but the second half is a bit of a twist into ambient that I'm not fussed about. I like ambient music at times, but I can't say it's what I'd want to hear or even expect when listening to Bowie.
Bland
Sida A = Bra Sida B = Inte för mig, inte igår iaf.
I generally dont consider myself a david bowie fan- i enjoy some of his hits. I actually found myself enjoying this one. The album has an almost ethereal, otherwordly sound (dream-like?). Bowie's voice is a powerhouse as always and filled with drama. It did start to lose me at the end though- it felt a little too experimental and unfocused for me. Overall- solid album
This is like the fourth David Bowie album that has been on this list. It’s fine, but I’m getting tired of David Bowie.
This was a relisten for me but I kind of forgot it existed before the generator picked it. It’s enjoyable to listen to with standouts such as “Heroes”, “Sons of the silent age” and “V-2 Schneider” but not something I’d necessarily put on again. While I like the ambience of this I think there are probably Bowie albums out there that I’d enjoy more.
The album contains some absolutely great tracks - of course the title song - but also less satisfying material, and the long ambient excursions in the second half make it overall too incoherent.
This is quite a surprise. On different fronts. It doesn't sound particularly seventies. The sort of synth-y funkiness it has, I associate much more with the early 80ies. I knew that bands like Duran Duran were inspired by Bowie but I hadn't really realized that Bowie sounded like this that early. Other thing is that as someone who doesn't really like Bowie's voice (too performative) it does actually work in this context. The music is quite dramatic and staged and the result is that voice and songs and production actually match in terms of atmosphere and intensity. The ambient tracks on side 2 are a bit dull.
It’s grand, but I’ve never been a massive Bowie fan.
One of the many Bowie albums you wished was actually good.
