Love me some David Bowie. Not my favorite of his albums but great nonetheless

Some classic Bowie

It was a nice album but I often fail to see the appeal with alot of Bowie's music, I don't know. Love the song "Heroes", though. Biggest hit on the album. But I don't get the nature or "peaceful" music in the second half of the album as it takes alot away from the album. 7/10.

Awful album. Not a good track on it. Most of the 2nd half of the record was just noises not music. Would not listen again.

Favourite!

My first introduction to Bowie. Enjoyable. Very British, artsy.

It was fine. Not as bad as some of the other Bowie albums. Still just don't understand the hype.

I was enjoying this ok until the weird synth stuff at the end. I didn’t think it went with the album at all. When I hear “Heroes” I always think of the end of The Replacements. That movie is 5 stars. This album is not.

Just don't like his style. As he says in sons of the silent age "can't stand another sound".

Didn't really find this album from Bowie particularly inspiring... it's one of those I wanted to like more than I actually did. Still, Heroes itself is a great song even if a little overplayed and for that this album gets a solid 3/5 from me

Started off strong. First few tracks were very groovy, layered, emotive. The back half of the album kind of killed the momentum that the first half had. The spacey soundscape tracks weren't bad in their own right, but they just went on for way too long. Definitely would be a 4 if the balance between conventional and instrumental tracks was a little better.

Brilliant. Yet another album on Bowie's practically perfect 70s run. The title track is one of the greatest songs of all time. 9/10

Just don’t get Bowie. Have tried and tried to listen to him but it’s just not as good as everyone thinks it is IMO. Some alright tracks but uninspiring stuff tbh.

A great album, especially the title track. Not sure what else to say. Really enjoyed the flow of the second side on this listen. Not Bowie’s best, but close.

worth the 5 stars for the title track alone

Having not been much of a Bowie fan, this one caught me off guard. I enjoyed it. The balance of vocals and instrumental tracks are sonically smooth and enjoyable to me - unlike David's Ziggy period. 4/5.

Hmmm... Not sure this was my favorite David Bowie. I enjoyed all the instrumental elements but that vocals were not there.

I've listened to enough David Bowie to know he'll never be my favourite artist, but I respect him. Hunky Dory is my favourite.

Eight Bowie records is entirely too many for this list and this is one that could be easily cut. TIile cut is fine of course but the gloomy instrumentals on side 2 are extremely tedious and pointless -- even for Eno fans – and sound dated besides. This is replacement-level at best, with only the rarest bits of intrigue.

Definitely another hidden gem. Some of the sounds reminded me of prog rock, but also jazz sound. Overall enjoyed and will like to listen more.

With a couple Bowies under my belt by this point, he’s kind of a mixed bag for me; there’s usually a couple songs per album I’ll like a lot, and the rest leaves me really cold. That said, I still haven’t heard anything from ziggy stardust era, so there might be missing context or something still.

Loved the ambient synth tracks on the back half of the album.

David Bowie is a good compositor and a referent singer.

I know a few of his biggest hits but I am mostly unfamiliar with David Bowie's work. I am definitely interested in checking out some of his other albums. This one, however, did not retain my interest. The only song I recognized was "Heroes" but only because of the Rammstein cover. The music was ok, and the vocal style/recording on this one made it tough to understand him.

Honestly another mediocre Bowie album on this list. Might be one of the few people who absolutely detests the title track, the rest of the album is fairly boring. Should have been much more interesting having Robert Fripp onboard but it wasn't.

With the exceptions of the title track and the instrumental Moss Garden, the rest of the album doesn’t impress. Maybe it was exciting in 1977, but the music feels rather generic. In the other hand, Heroes is such a brilliant song, it bumps it up a star in my rating.

Really lost me with those last 3 or 4 instrumentals. The single is great and the first half the album is good.

Really interesting album - I hadn't heard the second side before & it's very atmospheric.

I don't always love Bowie's voice, but this was mostly pretty great. The trio of instrumentals were interesting, especially Sense of Doubt.

Listened while riding bike so may not have got the full effect. But aside from the title track there seemed to be a lot of weird instrumental sound that didn’t do much for me.

I listened while on a run and although it was enjoyable to start, the group of instrumental songs toward the end were kind of a drag.

Not Bowie's best. I do enjoy the song Heroes a lot, and some of the instrumentals were kinda fun.

Ok....its not as good as Low. .but its still great. Its an uneven experience but Bowie can do that. Is Joe the Lion a decent song. No. Does some of side 2 wash over you.? Yes. Fripp on guitar is brilliant. Title track is a colossus...most of side one is epic in its angular awkwardness...lots of side 2 give me "feels". Easy 4

Compulsory Bowie listening? All for it. On this occasion I worked out that Adam Buxton's Bowie impression is based entirely on the vocal mannerisms in Sons of the Silent Age.

When you google this album the first suggested question is “Why is Heroes so good?” which just about sums it up

Bowie basically always gets a 5 from me. This is my 4th of his albums on this list. Interesting, but not surprised that the list author likes his Berlin trilogy so much. I think this is probably my favorite of the Berlin albums. Moss Garden is just about the most brilliant thing he and Eno ever did. Then Heroes is also awesome. Almost halfway through the list and still happy I'm doing it!

Very innovative. Plenty of experimentation with different sounds. There is a timeless quality to it. The song "Moss Garden" is particularly interesting.

Not the best Bowie but still some great sounds

Another interesting Bowie album that I probably need to spend more time with. Faves: Beauty and the Beast, Heroes.

There really isn't anything new to say about this album. I prefer Low personally, but this is damn close, an absolute masterpiece.

4/25/2022 Today's Album: "Heroes" by David Bowie - With every Bowie album I listen to for the first time, I feel like I gain a new respect for him. The way how he displays his ability to make pop hits and then throws all of it to the wayside to make some crazy psychedelic shit is done seamlessly and is always so impressive. In this album, there is definitely a different vibe than on Aladdin Sane. With the first half of the album, it's your standard Bowie experience with a ton of strange production thrown into what are generally common and poppy genres. The opener Beauty and the Beast has a great chaotic energy and does a good job of welcoming you into the track list, Sons of the Silent Age is a really epic, yet sweet track where Bowie is singing very well and the effect on his voice adds to the performance a lot. The track Black Out is a great way for this first half to end. It's a really great track on it's own and the title hold significance as it becomes a literal black out for the album. This is because the next 4 tracks act as an extended experimental ambient sonic journey. Each track gives a different side to this sort of droning and isolating environment with squeaky saxophones and pianos with an effect to give it this booming and resonant quality. I really like the way all of it is presented and all of the tracks together serve as a nice break from Bowie's eccentric vocals. It puts on display his amazing production skills and experiments with a lot of sonic ideas without being unlistenable. The closing track The Secret of Arabia breaks the tension built from the last tracks with a really fun and groovy dance track. The vocals are nice and the band is playing really straight in comparison to much of this record. It feels fun, fresh, and is a great way to end the album off on a positive and groovy note. Despite some of the tracks near the beginning being a little too much and feeling a little claustrophobic, this album overall has an awesome sound and aesthetic to it. I love the way Bowie is posed on the album art and one of his eyes being dilated while the other isn't is a great symbol for the strange nature of the track list on this album. Listen to this track if you like ambient music or have like Bowie's work on other albums. Score: 8.5/10 Experimental, yet palatable Highlights: Beauty and the Beast, Sons of the Silent Age, Black Out, V-2 Schneider, Sense of Doubt, Moss Garden, Neukoln, The Secret Life of Arabia.

Oh boy. Not a fan of David Bowie, was a hater a few years ago. Now, listening to this album it changed my outlook on him. I still think that his pop tunes are not that great, but on the second side of this album there are some great instrumental tracks. All in all, it's surprisingly an enjoyable listen. The second side really saves it for me tho. 3/5

The title track is phenomenal, but I could live the rest of my life without hearing any of the other tracks and I'd be just fine. Huge Bowie fan too.

Stellar. Improves if such a thing were possible by listening to the second side first, which contains more of the ambient tracks. The more uptempo krautrock tracks are just unbelievably good.

Generally when someone gets labeled a "musical genius" it becomes a turn-off to me. I'm thinking of David Bowie, Prince, and Beck. It usually means only people with superior musical taste can truly appreciate them, and the unsophisticated masses just don't get it. Despite being part of those unsophisticated masses, I do appreciate David Bowie's unique creative vision, even if I've never been a dedicated fan. He was never boring and never rested on his laurels. This album is really interesting. Artsy and experimental yet unpretentious. 4 stars.

Great record. If this album just had Heroes and the rest was junk, this would still be 3 stars. The fact that it's got a bunch of other great tracks on it makes it a classic.

I thought this was pretty good. As expected, Robert fripp provides some great guitar work here, with a trademark tumbling-down-the-stairs solo being heard. The instrumentation is somewhat difficult to penetrate, do to the dominance of the vocals in the mix and the dense nature of the instrumentation, but it’s good. Side a contains some pretty solid Bowie songs, while side b is comprised primarily of ambient pieces, which were nice, and reminded me of German bands such as popol vuh (particularly moss garden) or tangerine dream (Neuköln) I feel like this is an album which would benefit from being churned around in my mind for a few days. Overall I’d give it a 3.5 to 4 stars. Generally strong, but not my favourite Bowie work.

Bowie is great, but I don’t enjoy or get it all. I quite like side 1, but Blackout is a bit messy. I like Arabian (very Chic), but none of the instrumentals on side 2.

I don't even remotely understand the appeal of Bowie. This album was somewhere between garbage and a waste of my time.

This an exceptional album. The first half has a dense orchestrated feel that feels expansive in a way that Phil Spector’s ‘wall of sound’ feels. The latter half is primarily experimental instrumental driven by Brian Eno. The album communicates a sense of Cold War uncertainty yet stands on its own.

It has that one good track on it I guess. Rest of it seems kinda bland

A couple of great songs, but I've discovered I rarely like instrumentals. I've never taken to the Berlin trilogy and time hasn't changed my opinion.

It’s a good album crowned with Heroes, one of the best songs he did. But the second half of the record is a bit odd with long ambient instrumental tracks.

Nonsense, drivel lyrics, devoid of meaning and passed off as art. Self indulgent crap. Heroes is the only island of sanity on thus album. The rest are a parody of irself.

The sanmisen in Moss Garden was a pleasant surprise...

Beauty and the Beast is a killer start to this album. You’re immediately thrust into the eye of Bowie and Eno’s ambient creative art rock typhoon. You just know you’re in for an unforgettable ride. It’s weird, it’s passionate, it’s aggressive, it’s energetic but it’s ominous and foreboding at times too. Quite a ride, but it’s a solid album. I know there are a lot of Bowie entries on the list, he had his most prolific output in the 70’s, but this on earns its spot. I love Heroes, can never tire of that song. This isn’t my favourite iteration of Bowie, but it’s a damn good one.

Ich denke über das Lied Heroes braucht man wirklich nichts zu sagen, aber auch die anderen Songs hier drauf gehen gut ab und sind dann doch eigentlich genau das was man erwartet, sehr schrill und tanzbar. Ein wenig fällt Heroes dann eigentlich doch aus der Rolle, wie hymnenartig das wegkommt. In einer ganz anderen Welt sind aber Songs 7 bis 9, die komplett ambient sind, bevor es mit dem HIT The Secret Life of Arabia zuende geht. Eventuell bisschen zu all over the place, aber ich fands spaßig. 8/10

Da ist es, das erste David Bowie Album (von der liste). Heroes ist definitiv ein gutes Album. Jeder kennt natürlich den Titeltrack und alles andere wäre auch falsch, glaube ich. Es ist einfach ein sehr guter song, für mich vielleicht knapp in den top 10 von David Bowie. das instrumental, die lyrics (mal abgesehen von der sache mit der mauer) und die performance von bowie selbst sind perfekt. die anderen tracks in der ersten hälfte müssen sich aber auch nicht verstecken: vom ersten track bis "blackout" kann ich nichts finden, dass mir nicht gefällt. Wenn dann die ambient tracks kommen finde ich die nicht schlecht, aber sie passen einfach nicht zum rest des albums: es fühlt sich an, als ob hier zwei alben in eines gequetscht wurden und so kein teil mehr richtig atmen kann. alleinstehend wären beide teile noch viel besser. die tatsache, dass hier kein schlechter track drauf ist, hat damit nichts zu tun.

Kann irgendwie nicht allzu viel sagen, war sehr unterhaltsam und würde das definitiv nochmal hören, also hat mir gut gefallen. Das ruhige Ende war echt schön und hat mich stellenweise an so George Clanton Kram erinnert und der Anfang war simpel aber effektiv. Zwischendrin war ich nicht so aufmerksam wie ich vermutlich hätte sein sollen

Popmusik kann so gut sein, warum muss es so eine Scheisse wie Coldplay geben? Wahnsinnig gut produziert und ich liebe das Konzept A Seite Popmusik B Seite richtig schräger, experimenteller, ambientiger Kram, das kommt auf Low auch so gut oder auf Hounds Of Love von Kate Bush. Dickes Shoutout auch an Brian Eno und Robert Fripp, ich glaube die beiden und vor allem auch Iggy Pop haben Bowie musikalisch soo extrem gepusht, sonst hätte der bestimmt weiterhin so boring ass Glamrock oder 60er Jahre Pop gemacht, diese Sachen kann ich gar nich leiden von Ihm. 100% meins ist es musikalisch zwar nicht (zumindest die poppige erste Seite), aber für das was es ist, ist es quasi perfekt deshalb stronk 4

Bowies zweiter Teil der Berlin Trilogy macht im Grunde da weiter wo Low aufgehört hat, tolle Mische von Rock und Ambient, diesmal mit noch mehr Eno! Im Vergleich zu Low aber von der Stimmung deutlich mehr upbeat, was mir auch richtig gut gefällt. Man sollte auch eigentlich meinen der Titeltrack sollte irgendwann mal totgehört sein, aber nö. Der macht immer noch mega viel Spaß, bewirkt belebende Emotionen, so richtig Sturm und Drang. Will raus rennen und laut, voller Ekstase, rumschreien. (me and who??) Zweite Hälfte des Albums ist dann wirklich ziemlich purer Ambient, dafür aber sau sau gut. Zum Abschluss nochmal ein rockpoppiger Track, mit einer dicken Note Orientalismus ;) Fav tracks: Beauty and the Beast, Heroes, V-2 Schneider, Moss Garden und Neuköln (dummer typo Bowie, schäm dich, ist ja fast als hättest du nur einen Song von diesem Album TATSÄCHLICH in Berlin aufgenommen)

An und für sich schon cooles Ding aber Heroes ist vielleicht zu GUT haha der Rest stinkt ab auf Seite A. Die Ambient Sachen auf Seite B aber auch spaßig, genau wie der Closer! So ganz bekommen mich Bowie Alben nur meist dann doch nicht. 3,51

Richtig solides Album auf dem eigentlich nur gute Tracks sind, aber irgendwie zieht es mich nicht so rein, wenn ich es nebenbei höre, was sicherlich an der introspektiveren zweiten Hälfte liegt. Man muss Bowie auf jeden Fall dafür zu lieben, dass er quasi 4 Instrumental Tracks mit den allergrößten Bops einrahmt. Denke das Album könnte noch mehr on me growen!

Not as good as the other bowie album

It's not trippy prog-rock storyteller Bowie, and therefore it's not my favourite Bowie. All Bowie is decent Bowie though. ...Bowie.

I feel very much that I need to be listening to this on vinyl while high to fully appreciate this album. Heroes is best known but Sons of the Silent Age felt like classic Bowie to me. The discordant Sense of Doubt following the upbeat V-2 Schneider would just be cruel in that scenario though!

This is somewhere between a 2 and a 3, Heroes is objectively a great track but the rest is just kind of okay. I can't, in good conscience, give Bowie a 2 so it gets 3.

I love Bowie, and thought I loved this album. But other than Heroes, I thought the album was lacking...

Got quite excited seeing this album cover but to be completely honest, the only song on here I enjoyed was heroes. It's better than most of the 2s I've handed out here and worse than most of the 3s but just because of his legacy I'll have to round up. Not his best.

Esse aqui já caminha comigo a um bom tempo, sou muito fã do Bowie e cada pedacinho do que esse homem fez pro mundo. Esse é um bom álbum, longe de ser o melhor dele e de ser meu favorito mas tem sua importância, a parte instrumental do disco é incrivelmente boa, principalmente a música Moss Garden. Great Bowie album. Mix between classic Bowie and experimental Bowie.

I already heard this album, it has one of a my favorites musics sang by one of my favorites artists ever <3

It’s Bowie, so I expect it to be a bit weird. Heroes is brilliant. Even when it gets a bit experimental, you kind of give him the benefit of the doubt of his artistry. I feel like there’s better Bowie to come, so as a newbie to his oeuvre I remain sway-able in either direction after this listening experience.

He has better albums than this. Was a little disappointed by it.

As the advertising/marketing slogan from 1977 for the ‘Heroes’ album states: “There's Old Wave, there's New Wave, and there's David Bowie."

Other than the brilliant title track, I found that the 3rd of the Berlin trilogy doesn't have the same punch as Low and Lodger. Similar mix of pop singles and ambient pieces.

This is the first DB album I've listened to and it will certainly be the last. Disliked every minute of it. The youtube adverts were the best part. I realise he has huge following, I just can't hear why.

Gloriously experimental yet accessible and even dancey. The soundtrack to a movie you have to imagine and looks amazing.

So. Not my favorite. I really loved the song Heroes. But the entire tone felt too aggressive for me. It for sure felt like Art and Pop, which is an interesting intersection. It's definitely an album I may revisit down the line, but it felt at odds with what my nervous system needed today.

Heroes isn't my favorite but I wouldn't turn it off if it came on.

I have to say that this album I did not like as much as the last bowie one. Not as memorable and there was not a song that stood out to me. Still had that classic sound of his but not my favorite.

Heroes but then kinda boring with everything else

I’d actually never heard this album all the way through before. Really had me in the first half but almost put me to sleep after that

Not a Bowie fan in the slightest, but this slaps, not gonna lie. Better than Ziggy Stardust, the only other full album of his that I've heard. I would imagine that the more experimental instrumental break during tracks 7, 8 and 9 is a bit controversial, but I personally enjoyed it.

One of my favorite Bowie albums. The title track is among his best songs and the rest of the songs are quite strong as well. 5 🌟

Bowie being Bowie, man

Only heard the eponymous track before, liked the instrumentals but the vocals were a bit out there (as Bowie usually does). Solid

84. Heroes - David Bowie 10 tracks I'm not a huge Bowie fan so I was interested to listen to a full album. After listening to this I think I'm even less of a fan. It's just not an enjoyable listen. 2/5

I massively respect everything he does, but this album was just a bit unorganized. Begins with classic Bowie style of rock and his definitive vocal display, but the sudden transition to ambience, while enjoyable, makes the album seem like it lost track of where it wanted to go and what it wanted to be. I cannot give it more than a 3, as it would be unfair to other 3s from unknown artists who wouldn’t get the brand bias.

Unfortunately below expectations, Heroes as a lead single isn't even that good, the rest of the songs fail to coming close to anything remarkable and the instrumental/ambience B Side was redundant

Normally a Bowie fan, but this one kind of missed for me. Side 1 was pretty good, then side 2 was flat. Maybe not in the mood for instrumentals today. Just a 3.

Interesting to read how polarised the reviews are of this album. Personally, I love it - so evocative of an amazing period

5 all the way. It gets a little odd at the end, but I'm totally fine with that. Knock out some rock hits first and then have some fun with it. Obviously it's covered a lot but check out Motorhead's cover of Heroes, it's so good

So nice to have this album come up the day after Iggy Pop's The Idiot. Because where that was the prologue to the "Berlin Trilogy", this is the middle act. So I had already listened to it in the morning before it came up on here. It is one of the many highlights of Bowie's career and agreeably his greatest album. This is another one of those template albums that broke/enhanced new ground which led later musicians to follow. You will find me giving most Bowie albums 5 stars, this I want to give at least 6 to

I know the  Berlin trilogy has many die hard fans and Heroes is my favourite of the Berlin trilogy. Truth be told: I'm a bigger fan of the cocaine trilogy (Ziggy, Aladdin and Station to Station).  The sound in Beauty and the Beast is stylistically similar to what he did for a few albums to come. For example, it's similar to Scary Monsters. Bowie was looking for a certain sound from his lead guitarist. It wouldn't be accurate to say his guitarists all sounded the same but there are certainly some stylistic similarities between Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew and Earl Slick. They all had an avant-garde style to their solos and they all like to use the vibrato arm to make their long notes sing.  Side 1 is fabulous and is in the same neighbourhood as  the cocaine trilogy. Side 2 is a lot more instrumental. V-2 works for me but I get lost with Sense of Doubt,  Moss Garden and Neukoin. Are we sure he wasn't doing drugs in Berlin? 

I first heard some of these songs on the 1978 live album, Stage. When I bought this LP a few years later I remember thinking the production was a bit weird and sludgy. After watching a documentary on Brian Eno this week, I now realize it was Eno’s touch (not to mention his hijacking of side 2). I didn’t realize Bowie played sax on this but he seems to channeling Ornette Coleman with his squawking at the end of Neukoln. Tony Visconti said that once the instrumental tracks got recorded Bowie sent everyone home and would improvise the lyrics over top of the tracks without notes until he got them right. That’s pretty cool and also explains the cryptic nature of his lyrics. Anyway, the songs I thought were "meh" in the 70, I think are great now, even before I heard Odessa.

Ich bin ein Berliner. This is the pinnacle of Bowie’s Berlin Trilogy. It was a master stroke to have Fripp and Eno collaborate on this album. It starts off with a few weak songs but the title track is perhaps the best song of his stellar career, and surpassed only by the alt version sung in German. The 2nd side is very Eno influenced and the sense of Cold War angst and foreboding is palpable. In my view A sign of a true genius is an artist that can radically change their style over time to reflect or even lead the zeitgeist of the times. Bowie is one such chameleon, others that come to mind are Miles Davis and Neil Young.

Having just played Low, thought I'd play part 2 of the so called "Berlin Trilogy". Obviously the title track is the standout, commercial track but there is plenty to enjoy in the deeper cuts. Bowie was indeed a fascinating artist in every sense of the word.

It would be better if the style was more consistent throughout the album.

What more could you ask for from an album, a hit song about the essence of love and a song that brings deep seated dread.

Really good album overall. The 20 minutes of instrumental at the end wears on you a little but each of the instrumental tracks is individually good and the songs at the start of the album are all solid gold.

Nothing much caught my attention

Interesting album particularly liked the instrumentals towards the end. Wouldn't mind listening to again.

4.4 + The title track remains the closest example of a perfect rock song, with a vocal performance that's transcendent. There's also an Eno-driven stretch of instrumental songs during the second half that's on par with some of the greatest moments of "Low." If I'm being honest, I like but don't love a couple of the other tracks (e.g. "Sons of the Silent Age") but they certainly don't detract from the overall flow.

2nd of the Berlin Triology and hot off recording Lust for Life by Iggy Pop. Opening track is synth to the face, but that inescapable rock groove makes for a weird space age dance club. Heroes the single nails this sounds, creating a sonic horizon forever wide. The back half is a wild, Eno filled miasma. Secret Life of Arabia is a final french kiss dance hall ender for the album.

Fucking classic - no question.

Maybe I was expecting too much, but this album was very middle-of-the-road for me. I felt ambivalent about nearly every track here, despite the fact that I could tell there was effort going into constructing this record.

Ah, das Zentralwerk der Berlintrilogie. Ach, hätte man doch nur mehr Zeit, sich dem ausführlicher zu widmen ... es gibt natürlich so viel zu holen und zu reflektieren! Aber jedenfall, Die Bowie-Stücke natürlich interessant produziert, fast schon wall (no pun intended!) of sound-mäßig, mit immer wieder interessanten/überraschenden Effekten etc. Danke auch an Tony Visconti. Die Eno-Stücke brauchen bei mir immer, Moss Garden ist natürlich noch am eingängigsten, aber z.B. Neuköln - da würde ich jetzt nicht unbedingt leben wollen nach dem Stück; und erst recht nicht in einem verregneten Herbst 1977. Respekt insofern auch für diese Soundscapes. Und danke natürlich auch den Oblique Strategies. Der Popper in mir macht natürlich jetzt trotzdem erst mal wieder Heroes an.

Only the second-best of the Berlin trilogy... but that's sort of academic when it's only the second best of one of the greatest trilogies of albums ever recorded... I want to stand in a lonely desert with Sense of Doubt playing on the soundtrack...

David Bowie is fascinating and wonderful in so many ways, which of course includes his music. I love it when a musician or band continues to evolve and experiment throughout their life, and in very rare cases that musician still somehow sounds very much like, well, that musician. Bowie is one of those rare treasures. Regarding this album in particular, I had heard some but not all tracks before, and I enjoyed listening to them. Some of the songs made my brain go, "hey, I know that tune," then realize I don't recognize a song but rather as style or sound. For example, 'The Secret Life Of Arabia' reminds me of Talking Heads, a little bit of Blondie, and I'm sure countless other bands with which I am not familiar. This is not a knock on anyone; I don't get hung up on who did it first. I just think it's cool. Transports me to late 70s music and art and culture, or at least my fantasy of it. I don't care how far off I am in my imagining what it was like, I just enjoy it -- and I really have no idea as I was a suburban kid in elementary school when this music was made. Some of the tracks also sound like they could've been made this year. Almost futuristic, maybe? Like it could be a score for a Kubrick film. A few are a little too dissonant for me, but I can sometimes feel like that upon first listen of music that is a bit outside the "norm" or expectation I had.

Every aspect of this album grates on me. Heroes is an excellent track but the only track on the album worth mentioning. The album feels disjointed and despite being a remastered version, it actually sounds terrible. Its just not for me.

An outstanding album from an amazing artist. Moves like a living, breathing creature and leaves you astounded.

So the total track is one of his finest moments, otherwise I enjoyed the instrumentals and the second half of the album far more than the first half. Closing track is great too ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I didn't like it. Aside from Heroes - which I still like, despite it being overplayed by the media over the past 18 months - the rest of the album felt too self-indulgent. Maybe it's a better album when listening late at night, after a few glasses of wine.

Про него интересно говорить, на него интересно смотреть, его интересно слушать в версиях других исполнителей, но непосредственно его песни как будто включать и необязательно - его так называемый "штик" понятен и без этого. Есть и годнота, конечно, но попробуйте насрать 26-ю студийными альбомами - даже просто случайно что-то да получится. Но давайте объясню немного. Beauty and the Beast и Joe the Lion - не худшие песни на альбоме, но сама концепция напрягает - непонятно, затянуто, невесело. Очень не нравится звук, я не понимаю, как альбом 77 года может звучать хуже, чем его же работы 70-го. Иногда просто как по жестянке зубами скребут, такой звук( Heroes - пиздец какая затянутая и унылая хуйня, просто антоним слову удовольствие. Всё идёт и идёт, продолжается и продолжается, и всё более невыносимой становится. Слышал её в версии Nico - было гораздо приятнее, но всё равно требует сокращения в два раза. Sons of the Silent Age - поинтереснее, один из немногих хайлайтов пластинки, трубы нормец влетают. Проблема в том, что это похоже на песню времен зигги стардаста. А че а где новое видение-то... Blackout - вступление качает, збс, уже подумал, что щас хорошо будет. Но сведение голоса опять всю атмосферу убило - ну скребёт по ушам просто, пиздец. Впрочем, после вступления больше ничего особо интересного в песне не было. Далее начинается вторая сторона альбома с охуенными ЭКСПЕРИМЕНТАМИ этого великого визионера, ну и там слушать вообще нехуй, честно говоря. V-2 Schneider - просто ужасающий звук, кто блять это продюссировал? пиздец а не музыка, просто звуковой понос какой-то. Sense of Doubt - малоинтересный звуковой коллаж, но хотя бы звучит адекватно, есть прям вибрация на низах ощутимая. Я могу понять, что по тому времени, наверное, это считалось за что-то необычное, на сегодняшний день звучит несколько потеряно и затерто. И в целом всё то же самое относится и к последующим звуковым паллетам - это очень слабые по сегодняшним меркам саундколлажи, которым место в массажках или плейлистах для сна. опять же - наверное по времени было чем-то необычным, но даже если не брать в расчёт массовость такой музыки - сделана она топорно и без вкуса, эффекты примитивные какие-то, как будто первую попавшуюся педаль нажали и такие оо фейзер ну пусть будет, ооо че тут шум ветра заебись сойдёт. ничего интересного вторая часть альбома не представляет, это просто слепые тычки в разные стили и жанры, в надежде, что хоть что-то сработает. Ну последняя песня The Secret Life of Arabia - сойдёт, нормально. Один из немногих светлых моментов на релизе. Но и здесь тоже как будто к более старому творчеству отсылка идёт) А таким образом получается, что все, относящееся к вот этой новой готишной эстетике - это какой-то кал жуткий и профанация. Чувствую здесь 3/10

I have only heard Heroes before this. Not fond of the first few songs. Love Sense of Doubt, very ominous. Moss Garden too. Really love all the instrumental tracks. Conclusion: I might not be a fan of David Bowie's voice.

It's okay. The only song that really stands out to me is Heroes, though.

Sons of the Silent Age rider vidare på Heroes-vågen, lite mer experimentellt, lite mer blås. Helt ok. Blackout tar oss tyvärr tillbaks till inledningen, en rocklåt som med fördel glöms bort. B-sidan är mer intressant. V-2 Schneider är en hyllning till Florian Schneider från Kraftwerk. En bra, lite krautig, låt som bleknar i efterhand, med tanke på vilka låtar som följer. Låtföljden Sense of Doubt -> Moss Garden -> Neuköln är briljant. Bowie och Brian Eno har här komponerat tre atmosfäriska instrumentella stycken. Sense of Doubt är ambivalent, ibland hoppfulla vågor och stråkar, för att sedan tas ned av pianotoner i moll. Moss Garden är viloplatsen, en blomdoftande oas innan... Neuköln, som tar en åter ner i mörkret, denna gång lite klokare, med lite mer information om världen. Avslutningslåten The Secret Life of Arabia är en väg tillbaks till verkligheten, till rocken. En ganska vanlig låt, men ändå bättre sound än A-sidan. Topparna på albumet är 5/5, men det finns för många tråkiga spår för att kunna klassa det högre än 3/5. Bästa låt: Heroes

Great album. One of the few albums that gets better as it progresses. Wasn't a big fan of the first track but it gets good when it gets to the title track. I was surprised I liked the instrumental tracks so much. Probably give it a 4.5 due to some so so tracks.

Title track is almost too amazing for the album's good. It's a tale of two sides of the album, and I can appreciate it but I can only pay so much attention to it. But the experience was nice.

While I only really enjoyed Beauty and the Beast and Heroes from the first half, all the instrumental, ambient stuff in the second half was great! I've never delved that deeply into Bowie's albums before so this was a nice surprise.

I'd give it 3.5 stars. +1 in there for Heroes, and I liked the oppressive trance of Sense of Doubt + Moss Garden + Neukoln leading into upbeat exotic The Secret Life of Arabia. Overall, though, I was underwhelmed.

Starting off as a typical Bowie rock album, I did not expect the later instrumentals at all. The slow transition from rock to Japanese-influenced melodies was an amazing experience. Only downside is the songs are a bit stretched out and repetitive.

Really didn’t do anything for me. Most of the songs felt either too busy and badly mixed or too empty. No memorable tunes.

Enjoyable in bits, felt very pedestrian in other places. Maybe because I do not have enough context to appreciate it in 2021. Wanted to give it a 2.5, need decimals.

I listened to this album twice just to make sure I was hearing right and believable. So far no album apart from Bad Company has disappointed me so sharply after Heroes. It's like there's a sharp drop in quality. Someday with more patience I'll understand this album a lot more. The songs that I really love I will rate a solid 4-5. Heroes is an anthem to me. But maybe because of the generation I grew up in, and that these are ALBUMS to listen to, I expect something as an album. It's so disappointing, with this voice and solid songs, the album is a drop in quality. So disappointing. ((I went back and read the history of the album, maybe someday I will look at this album differently, but I personally did not enjoy it. I'm listening to Ziggy Stardust and with every song the groove helps me forget Heroes)) 2/5

Bowie's voice is certainly charming, but I didn't like the execution on several of the cuts on this project. I suspect his more popular records will be more appealing, and I'm sure we're gonna see a few of them at least so I'm looking forward to that. // Favs: Beauty And The Beast Score: Light 3

I just don't get Bowie. Not for me.

Bowie takes you on a journey from upbeat and relatively radio friendly electro-rock tunes, right through to quite experimental instrumentals in the latter portion of the album. I quite enjoyed the ambient relaxing sounds of Moss Garden which transported me to another place. Amazingly, most of the tracks on the album were created in one take both instrumentals and lyrics. Best: Beauty and the Beast; Heroes; Moss Garden Worst: V-2 Schneider

Very modern sound with urban and country parts. Generally optimistic feeling and upbeat. Timeless.

Yes, I'm very familiar with the title track, but everything else was new to me. "V-2 Schneider" is the track I'll most likely listen to again. "Sons of the Silent Age" was the only track that I was tempted to skip. Overall the album was good. One of the surprises for me was the number of instrumental tracks. Bowie’s voice is so recognizable, and it was surprising to hear that it was absent from a string of tracks. "Sense of Doubt", "Moss Garden", and "Neuköln" had a hint of progressive rock to them, while still sounding like they belonged on the same album as "Heroes". I might not listen to the whole album again, so I'll settle with 3 stars.

This album took a mad turn that I did not expect and I absolutely loved it. I really thought I had my head around what was going on. David flicks a switch and I’m floundering and all the happier for it. After the few songs instrumental interlude, The Secret Life of Arabia (what the hell is that??) sounds so punchy. The bass is luscious. So much prowess and confidence. And THEN, the song just fades out. All too quickly. As if it’s the most normal thing in the world. As if he hasn’t just blown my world apart. Why does it fade out like that??! I didn’t enjoy the first half of the album enough to give it a 5 but it’s great. I’ll state for the record that that Rise and Fall of Ziggy and Young Americans are stone cold 5ers for my money.

It feels almost sacrilegious to admit, but I don’t think I've ever listened to a full Bowie album. Put him up there in TBTLT (Too Big To Listen To) with Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones et al. There is clearly a lot to like. The title track is an all time great, and well worth the full length listen. I found it odd that for a man with so much to express, he gave over two and a half of ten to weird, kind of directionless atmospheric noodling. I did like Moss Garden, that said. I’m not convinced it was pulling its weight. All told, I liked it - plenty of pep, and clearly excellent songwriting chops. But I come away wanting more.

First album I’ve listened to on this challenge that I loved.

At his best, Bowie's formidable talent for hooks and especially bridges can defibrillate songs back to life following the frequently enjoyable detours his eccentric vocals take them on in the verses. But Heroes ain't his best--that includes the title track, which has an exulted status I've never understood--and I'm not sure even his best hook work could rescues the flat-on-its-ass teutonic ambience attempted in the second half. A lot of time on scenery and not enough on plot.

Boring

First 5 good, next 5 songs kind of experimental instrumentals which I'm not a huge fan of, but I did like Sense of Doubt out of them.

Another Bowie album of which I'm note quite sure why they chose this one. So far I only knew the title track though, so it was nice to hear some new (for me) Bowie. The first half is very rocky in a ahead-of-it's-time manner typical for Bowie. The synth-ambient tracks on the second half really caught me by surprise though. I really enjoyed Moss Garden on the ambient side, but still, the combination of a couple ambient tracks on a rock album doesn't really work for me. That and the lack of a brilliant, stand-out Bowie hit on this album makes it a 4 and not a 5 for me.

I guess I’m a Bowie fan now! Half existential bops to dance to, half eerie and gorgeous soundscape. Robert Fripp and Brian Eno really bring it together to paint a gorgeous masterpiece for David Bowie to launch himself off of. Beautiful!

at risk of causing gammon nigel to boil himself for daring to diss a national treasure, i've always considered Duncan to be all about the singles and the albums full of filler. this does not change my opinion. strongest part of the album is the bits he didn't sing on. sounds like i don't like bowie but i don't have no beef with him.
