4 stars for common people, disco 2000 and the one about pants ONLY
Generally catchy, unremarkable pop, but with some of the horniest lyrics and vocal performances. Songs range from angst-washed to sultry.
I've always been a fan of Pulp, but rarely ventured into their albums as a whole. Clearly, I'm an idiot. This album is brilliant, and plays so well front to back, especially as so many of the songs tie into one whole, throwing up themes of class, resentment, and general depravity. I love the cover with this in mind. I also didn't realise how brilliant the lyrics were on some of these songs. Kicking off right away with Mis-shapes, it's superb, and really pointed. Jarvis Cocker is such a brilliant front-man. I really wish I were rich enough to hire him to just follow me around and read things for me in his overtly sexual perv-voice. Imagine him listing off a recipe while you cook.. "Add in two grams of... salted butter... and stir... vigorously... while you ladle over... ladle over the beef dripping, and STIR" So many big, sing-along classics here. And even if you didn't have the rest, this album has Common People on.... I mean come on... it's an absolute stone-cold classic. What a song. It's a big five from me.
Please write a song about something other than self-loathing or fucking. I'm begging. Creepy and insufferably smug. "Underwear" made me want to throw up a little

Classic, literate and quintessentially British. There is a sarcastic cynicism that runs through this album but when you scratch the surface, there's also a lot of heart. Best Tracks: Common People; Disco 2000; Sorted for E's and Wizz

Seems like a record that was important at the time but is far too sleazy and melodramatic for me today.

While Albarn and Gallagher were battling it out as pretty boys on the cover of magazines, Jarvis Cocker was out there writing songs for the working class while banging high-class girls. Well done lad. And similar to what those girls told Cocker afterwards, the whole thing was quite enjoyable but a bit too long.
There’s no denying that Pulp was the grown-up in the room regarding 90’s britpop. There are more Oasis and Blur albums that I listen to a couple of times a year, but there’s a certain charm, confidence and (the keyword here) ability to convey social stigma in Cocker that neither Gallagher nor Albarn possess. Different Class is unfortunately too long - I think maybe cutting it a full 10 minutes would have done wonders. But it’s nevertheless one of the quintessential British 90’s records.
Excellent Britpop album, really a high watermark for this genre. Strong pop sensibility, lovely arrangements, and incisive lyrics. A pretty good album. I was more Oasis and Blur than pulp back in the day. Common People and Disco 2000 are rippers and some of the other tracks are quality. A few tracks I would skip. Will definitely give this another run.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to. Aside from "Common People," which I knew already, the other songs were very well-crafted. Very catchy. (I do keep coming back to "Common People," only because I knew it from the William Shatner cover (don't laugh, but it's really good.).) The other songs have a sardonic wit about them, which you just don't hear in a lot of pop songs in the 90s, and I kind of appreciated that. So yeah, big thumbs up from me.
Jarvis Cocker's vocals are so polarizing. So often he sounds like a condescending twat (to use a British word) with his half whisper and part speaking style. But other times it sounds energetic and perfectly cheeky, like on Common People (a quintessential Brit Pop tune and a classic with its combo of rock/pop/synth and witty lyrics). Other songs that bring that nicely blend Pulp's sound with Cocker's vocals and lyrics are Disco 2000 and Mis-Shapes, maybe Monday Morning too. But I do find it a bit creepy how much an early 30's guy is singing about sex where the protagonists are seemingly teenagers. Ultimately, while this album has its highs, it also feels boring or repetitive. A little too uneven for me.
A lot of fun, a little too long.
I know people love this record but I just find it creepy. So much is devoted to weird revenge fantasies with a not-so-secret core of misogyny. If that’s what you think of people, Jarvis, you’re a miserable bastard. And if these are just characters I can’t imagine a situation where I’d want to spend any time with them. I was not blown away by the musicianship. The singing was off putting and also unskilled. I didn’t think there was a lot of great song craft here. I’m glad I didn’t waste any time on it when it came out.

Pulp, together with Suede and The Auteurs: the top 3 "britpop" bands from the mid-90s. His N Hers, Different Class and This Is Hardcore are all 5 star albums, but their music from 83-93 is not even *that* different in form and quality.. ..some of their old work is actually pretty great too (just wildly inconsistent). Anyways, Different Class was the best albums of the 90s and it aged pretty well. I am listening to some remastered version and every song sounds as great as ever. It is also an album where the order of the songs is perfect.
One of my favourite albums of all time.

Además, ha envejecido muy bien, no se siente viejo y se puede escuchar de cabo a rabo.
La verdad es que no sé la historia de cómo Pulp llegó tarde a la batalla del Brit-Pop y quedó detrás de Blur y Oasis, porque la verdad es que, al menos con este disco, se me hace que tiene el nivel de los otros. Tal vez el problema es que es nada más este disco el que llega a ese nivel. Mi favorita, por mucho, es Disco 2000 que tiene una gran letra y ese riff de guitarra de la entrada con un destiempo ahí muy jiribilloso.
I don't know anything about Pulp and I refuse to look at the Wikipedia entry before writing this review. This records sounds like some kind of 90s Brit-Pop band. Not as snotty-forward as Oasis and maybe a little less obvious than Blur, but definitely more mainstream sounding than bands from the shoegaze scene. But this record also feels like it's pointing ahead — showing the way for bands from elsewhere (geographically) and elsewhen (the future). Like reverse resonances or pre-echos of The Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, The National, and that one that neither of us can think of the name of right now but is on the tip of our tongues...you know, they were big in the aughts.

Love this. It's like David Bowie at his best. The only song I was previously familiar with is Common People. I have to admit I'm still partial to William Shatner's and Joe Jackson's version of it, but the original is pretty good too :-) 4 stars.

One of the most outstanding albums of all time. They could have released every track as a single and they'd all have been hits.

I want to like this a lot more than I do, which is a weird thing to want. I guess it's because it has all the trappings of something I would love, but somehow it never gets all the way there. 'Common People' is a great song, but I first heard William Shatner's version. Maybe that's the problem right there. I like this more than just as a background record and I'll keep trying with this one, so maybe that makes it a 4. Yeah, I guess it's a four then. Okay.
I'm probably more in the 2 and 1/2 range here, but it's Halloween so they're getting the extra half star. Just like I'm gonna get an extra half of a Reese's cup, baby! I don't think any of the other songs come close to touching "Common People" with a ten meter (because it's the UK) pole. But I liked having this on in the background. "F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E." made me perk up, despite how annoying it was to type out that song title just now.
So sharp, so good. "Common People" and "Disco 2000" and "Something Changed" are droll and excellent in their own way. "Pencil Skirt" and "Underwear" are also delightful. One misses the golden age of such listenable fin de siecle snark.
I felt this album had weird sensual energy. Maybe it would work for me on a different day, but it was an odd listen in the middle of my work day that's for sure.
Thought I would like this album more based off of 'Common People' All-in-all, not bad not great

It's got classwarfare against the upper classes, catchy indie rock riffs, witty lyrics, a 90s culture and drugs vibe: basically everything I love. Very little I dislike here, in comparison to the album that follows this. Compared to This is Hardcore, this is cooler, catchier, more meaningful and more enjoyable by a long way.

This is a pretty iconic album in 90s music, I can certainly place Common People, Disco 2000 and Something Changed to particular points in my teenage life. Probably Pulp's most solid offering.

There's not many bands that have produced multiple anthems that have stood the test of time and are still in the popular consciousness; this album produced not only Common People but also Disco 2000. Which is to say there is certainly no lack of songwriting or production on show. Bar Itallia has to be up there with the all time great album closers as well. Jarvis Cocker always brings a lot of personality to everything he does but I tend to find his melodies and lyrical content a bit samey, his enthusiasm more than makes up for it though. All in all a brilliant album but not one thats in my regular rotation 4/5

Conoscevo solo la canzone common people. Non proprio il mio genere (troppi suoni pop) ma i testi molto belli. Comunque sono molto bravi anche a suonare.
Spiky and tart. "Common People" and "Disco 2000" and "Something Changed" are sharply observed and delightful. Funny thing, for all Cocker's reputation for snark and irony, one believes every word he sings – and believes he believes them, too (which is perhaps more to the point). The playing and tones are ideally suited to his style as well.
I thought the album was mildly interesting but for the most part I found it a bit tame or bland. Not my style personally but not a bad album altogether 5/10.

Entirely forgetable pop music, probably dear to those who grew up with it, but rather boring for someone who did not. I can appreciate post-punk and brit-pop, but I don't see what is there to like about this album. The melodies are primitive and boring, the lyrics are terrible, the vocals are nothing special and the mix did not age well at all. I don't think I'll ever listen to it again.

A lot of this reminded me of Roger Waters/the wall(forget which song but had Waiting for the Worms vibes). This was solid I enjoyed listening to this throughout, I thought the beginning was very strong and I really liked Live Bed Show

In the US during 90s Pulp kind of got buried by Oasis, Blur and other likeminded bland Britpop groups because other than the few standouts, they all sound the same. Pulp's Different Class falls into that line and extends into the 'If David Bowie first came to fame in the 90s this is what he'd sound like' sound. It's not bad, it's not groundbreaking, it's just okay and thats not too bad. P.S. the William Shatner version of Common People is the best version. 3/5.

• I had already heard Common People • The vocalist shines when he sings loudly, in the higher register, rather than the low whisper he tends to use • I Spy’s slow beginning isn’t my favourite but when it picks up it gets a lot better • Disco 2000 is also very good • A lot of the (non love-related) lyrics remind me of Gorillaz • Many songs on the album don’t particularly stand out on a first listen, though I can see them becoming easier to recognise on further listens. Favourite song: Common People

Le chanteur du groupe Pulp a parfaitement réussi à s'émanciper de l'âme d'Elvis Costello, et en fait toute la démonstration ici. Un énorme album qui vient se placer en révélation des Generator Awards du mois d'août.

Despite being a child of the 90s, I had never heard of this band or album. It was fine, but didn't particularly stand out for me. I'm not super well educated in Brit Pop but I can think of a lot of albums from that era that I did enjoy more than this one. Almost certainly a case if I had heard this 25 years ago I'd feel differently.
Pleasant but unremarkable to me. Honestly that's how I feel about almost all britpop. It's so... inoffensive. Wish it had some more bite. The lyricism has some solid highlights though.
A pretty good album. "Common People" was certainly the highlight of the album. It is a really good song that is pretty much my idea of good Britpop. I would listen to this entire album again.
My immediate knee-jerk reaction was "meh, another so-so '90s Brit rock group." Thankfully, that first impression was incorrect. There's some quality music on here, much of it pointedly aimed at the frivolous and out of touch upper class. "Common People" was the first song to get my attention (and is probably my favorite song on the album). The line "I took her to a supermarket" was what tipped me off to Pulp's sense of humor. They're theatrical and the album tackles a key inequity in the modern world, but they're not taking themselves too seriously, either. That's a combination I respect. Sonically, they sound like sort of a precursor to The Killers, but they're not afraid to dip into whatever genre suits them. "Disco 2000" was obviously inspired by Laura Branigan's "Gloria"--it's not every band that says "Hey, let's do a disco track." But it fits the album and their self-aware sense of humor. Not sure how many of these tracks will end up in my rotation, but this was a surprisingly solid album.
Common People & Disco 2000 are my favorite Pulp songs, so it's nice to see they're on the same album. I especially like the lyrics to Common People, and I've read it's autobiographical. Pulp (and Blur) are quintessential 90s Britpop, so next time I'm feeling nostalgic for that era, I'm putting on this album.
I've only really ever heard Common People and Year 2000 from Pulp, so I was definitely interested in hearing more and overall I liked what I heard.

Different Class is the fifth album by English rock band Pulp. Released during the height of Britpop popularity, this album was a critical and commercial success - winning the 1996 Mercury Music Prize, and being certified 4 times platinum. It is rightfully considered a classic of British pop, as it still sounds great to this day, but can also transport a listener back to 90's England. The album's Britpop/rock music deserves a listener's undivided attention while it blasts them with deft, energetic, catchy melodies & hooks, that can also slow down to something almost tranquil and atmospheric. The synth-spiked pop music is undeniably danceable and makes even the rhythm-averse people nod their head to the beat. I went into this album not expecting much, but was greatly surprised by how good the music was. I may have to check out more albums from Pulp now!

The melodies of a lot of the songs didn’t grab me enough to want to pay attention to the lyrics and themes, which made me tune out as the album progressed. I also struggled with Jarvis Cocker’s vocal delivery. I like that he channels David Bowie and Bryan Ferry, but he doesn’t always sound like he is in tune; and his whispered, spoken vocals are particularly grating. This is a shame, because I really liked ‘This Is Hardcore’ and was hoping for a similar experience. A mixed bag then, not without merit, just probably not for me. Still better by anything than Blur though.
Easily forgettable album with all the other new wave on the list. Other than Common People, the rest of the songs get annoying and the vocals became a bit irritating. I hesitate to give it a 2, but it is definitely a lower 3.
Britpop never fails to deliver. This one is a nice, although bit too long, mix of entertaining Britpop songs with a focus on the acoustic guitar

Never heard of this group before. I found them utterly dull, bland, and unremarkable. The singer's voice was monotone and without much emotion. Did not enjoy this album at all.
I've heard a lot of people talk about Pulp but never really listened to them much. I enjoyed the songs "Common People", "Disco 2000" "Something Changed" and "Underwear" Good to listen to while I tried to eradicate an ant infestation.
"Different Class" is the fifth studio album from Pulp. It was released in 1995 pretty much at the height of Britpop. I know people may disagree with me but I think this is the best album of that genre. The title refers to a club night at Eve's Club and also to the British social class system. A double meaning, I like it. This is very polished and well-produced music. In a lot of songs, the music tends to build as the songs progresses. Their lead singer, Jarvis Cocker, has a great emotional delivery; he sings, he whispers, he screams. The lyrical themes are social class and relationships often intertwining the two. The first song on the album is "Mis-Shapes" which starts things off with spiraling keyboards and piano. The song is an ode to outcasts who were targets at clubs. The song was the second single released and was coupled as a double-single with "Sorted for E's & Wizz" which is sort of a happy-poppy-sounding song about the artificial nature of the drug culture. The first single and their most popular song is "Common People." This is a tremendous song which builds as the song progresses. A great keyboard (I think) intro and catchy chorus (both keyboards and vocals). About a rich girl wanting to live like common people and narrator saying that could never completely happen. Initially, I thought was listening to Laura Branigan's "Gloria" in their third single "Disco 2000," a very polished song with great keyboards and guitar. I know I'm repeating myself in some of these album reviews but not a bad song here (Well, they should be since they are supposedly the best albums). A album in the height of Britpop and may be the best one. By the way, I never heard of this album up until probably 10 to 15 years ago. Not big in the States in the 90's and never made it to my ears. Probably, since it was also released at the height of grunge.

Listened to 1.5 songs. Couldn’t do it.
This album was not very good, I only made it through about 7 songs. Common People feels like it could kick ass live, but it was a little horny (but not in a good way) for my taste and I didn’t love the mix. It didn’t quite have _it_ to really be a class anthem that I want. Overall, meh. Not the worst I’ve ever heard but I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen. I would rate it 5 but some of the songs have real weird lyrics so it’s a 4 for me.
By the fall of 1995, the smoke of the Battle of Britpop had yet to fade out properly and there was plenty more where that came from on the Blur and Oasis sides. But if you were tired of it all and were looking for something a little more stimulating, then Pulp were ready to sweep you away. They'd always been ready, they were looking for the proper time to strike and 1995 was that time. First with Common People, the Britpop anthem and Pulp's brightest moment and then Different Class, Pulp's finest hour. Horny escapades, kitchen sink tales of moments and memories past and present, the possibilities that come from connections. They're all laid out here. The minds were definitely at work here and millions were blown away by the suave swagger of Jarvis and Co. They just wanted a right to be different and, for fifty-one minutes, they showed us how.
If you ignore Suede (who aren't really Britpop) this is pretty inarguably the best, most consistent Britpop album. The absolute peak, and a lovely old evisceration of the somewhat vacuous culture that surrounded it. That the 90s are now looked upon by many as the good old days, tells you everything you need to know about the absolute state we are in now, in 2022.
Quite simply, this is not to my taste! Whilst it's not bad pop rock there is nothing on this album that isn't overly forgettable. As harsh as it may sound, I feel this is for people who don't really have an understanding, or real care, for music and are happy for the odd repeatable lyric they can sing along to in a drunken stupor.

I found out about Pulp several years after Brit Pop was over. I really like this album. Common People is an awesome song.

This album surprised me. I liked it a lot more than expected. Side 1 stronger than Side 2 but overall really good 90s Brit-pop rock. I even thought about checking Discogs for the vinyl - high praise for a band I had mostly ignored when this was released.

I only had a chance to listen to this once. As far as hits go Common People is quite good. I also like FEELINGCALLEDLOVE. The rest I'd have to listen to again. Jarvis Cocker writes clever lyrics.
Best Song: Sorted for E's and Wizz. Nothing more to say than that I really just enjoyed the melody of the chorus. Worst Song: F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. What is it with every disco-rock male artist from the 80s that requires them to produce at least one song that makes them sound like a serial killer. Every one of them is at least 1% Buffalo Bill. Who thought this husky whispering was the sexy vibe of the decade? Overall: More Brit male mediocrity. Nothing particularly exciting here, nothing weird, nothing musically interesting. Much ado about nothing.

It's so good, and gets you in different ways each listen.
One of the few albums on this list that I have listened to the whole way through a load of times before. This is proper nostalgia for me - I would've only been 5 when this came out, but my dad loved it so it was on in the car all the time. In retrospect, the lyrics are really inappropriate for a five year old to be listening to, but I don't think it's messed me up too badly! I can't give it anything other than a 5, the combination of some proper singalongs (Common People & Disco 2000 the most obvious) with a few of their hallmark album tracks (the slightly creepy, slower songs like I Spy and Live Bed Show) with a proper ballad (Something Changed) and some really clever social/political commentary. Fits together really well as an album, and closes nicely with the energy in Monday Morning into the drunken ramble of Bar Italia. Mile End (which is only on the Deluxe Edition) is also well worth a listen (and not just because I live just round the corner from there).
For now, this app says I don't like britpop. Wrong. I love it when it's well-written, topical as f*ck, smart and irreverent, nor to mention rich on a musical standpoint. Exactly what Pulp's magnum opus provides here. Oh, I almost forgot. And you can shake your rump on a dancefloor to a large chunk of those tracks, too. A huge plus that very few other britpop masterpieces can boast about. What more can you ask, really, eh? I thought it was nostalgia - but there’s isn’t a single song that does not pull at my heart strings when I listen to this album. Jarvis Cocker and lurid and lucid take on a Brit’s coming of age - is executed with panache and sardonic wit. A perfect album through and through - the best album from the whole Britpop era.
The music is pretty good, although not very original. The lyrics are really uninspiring.

I said on my other Pulp review that I hadn't explored much Pulp beyond Different Class. I really enjoy this album despite all the things I dislike about 90s music: too long albums and Britpop. Yet this album works for me. Maybe it's because it is anchored by the banger of a song with Common People.
while this album had a few good selections near the tail end, the beginning was tragic to say the least and made it hard to even think about finishing it. between the horrendous vocal performance, where they were pitchy more than they were on top of the notes, and the random points where they would just talk in a mildly sensual way for no apparent reason, it wasn’t a great showing either lyrically or vocally for the band. it seemed to stay topically focused on sex or sexual themes, only deviating a few times. the good selections mentioned above were bar italia, a song that was sonically pleasing, even if the lyrics were repetitive and one dimensional, a story about wanting to go to a bar, where other broken people stay. the other good song was Common People, although i mightve only liked it because of its refreshing theme of wanting to be like “Common People” opposed to wanting to live like a rockstar. It also had a very catchy melody, one vaguely similar to the vocals of “kids in the USA”. if you like pitchy brit pop, you might like this.. this was certainly not for me though…
Obsessed with the melodrama of I-Spy OBVIOUSLY Common People and Disco 2000 are absolute classics I didn't love all of it but also I feel like this is one that will grow on me
I've always liked their hits but never clicked with Pulp beyond that. Really enjoyed listening to the whole album tho, plenty of bops and some moody stuff too, excellent album high 4.

Probably the best Britpop album? It's just a perfect mix of the fun anthemic bops and the darker, introspective stuff that Pulp excelled at (and explored even more for their next album, This Is Hardcore)

If 1995 were to be summed up in an album it would be this one. Forget Blur or Oasis, Pulp were always the clear winners of the Britpop wars. I hadn't listened to this in years, as I had overplayed it and felt it was maybe dated. Hearing it with fresh ears it is a such am amazing album. Toliko sam puta pokušao slušati, stvarno jesam, negdje 10 puta maltene, ali ne ide. Dakle ovaj album nije ni četvorka nažalost za mene, a tako sam htio da bude. Jebem ti to romantično/drkavajuće šaputanje na albumu, da ti jebem. Kolko serem po ovom albumu, ispast će da mislim da je dvojka ili trojka, malo je jače od trojke, al kužiš, Blurov najgori album je u rangu sa ovim.

I always sort of liked Pulp, they were a fun pop band. I didn't appreciate quite how good they were though, until listening to this now. What a great album! There's so much to like here, fun tunes, great production, interestingn lyrics, all kinds of moods. I really rather love it!
I was unfortunately not impressed with this album. I had never heard of Pulp before, and I was surprised that this came out in the mid-1990's as this album cover as it gives off early 70's vibes. The music itself also did not end up feeling like it came from the 90's as it felt more geared towards the 1980's brit-pop scene. I'm not a big fan of this genre in general, but I do think something great will come along that might change my feelings towards it. As far as 'Different Class' goes, I don't feel that this record did anything new or exciting that would make it stand out especially in the year that it came out. The singer gave me strong Bowie vibes with a bit of Robert Smith as well. It was never bad and felt like it fit the music well, but I didn't get much out of it. If anything, I noticed that the vocals were mixed in a way that allowed some poor/generic lyrics to shine (this was especially apparent on 'Something Changed' and the closer, 'Bar Italia'). The only tracks I can say that I enjoyed were the opener and 'Monday Morning', but the project as a whole just came across as sort of lame. I attribute this more towards my feelings to this type of music as a whole, but this album did no favors to it. 2/5. NOTE: I just noticed that a lot of my lower ranked albums are from the early 1990's which I find very strange as a lot of my favorite albums/artists came from this time period. I'm not sure when this list was created initially, but I wonder if some of these albums were included on the very first iteration when they might have been considered more revolutionary/groundbreaking at that moment in time. A few of these albums, including this one, just feel outdated at this point.

This was a strange album - it started out as kinda standard 90s UK pub rock, then around the second half it became this real Gen X 80s pop rock stuff, still pretty pub-bound I guess but was weird. I did mostly enjoy it though. 55min is too long, but hey. Still a solid 3/5.
A cheerful and great album all the way through, although the sexual theme can get a bit much at times. I particularly enjoyed "I spy".
I enjoyed his as I remember the singles from this album from when it was released. I wasn't blown away by the other tracks on the album but it was pleasant to listen to.
Kind of creepy with the whispering at some points... but it's not a bad album. Some enjoyable artrock or whatever genre you'd put this in. I never got tired of listening to it, which is more than I can say for some of the albums on here. Dude's got sex on his mind all the time though, and it becomes a little comical by the end of the album.

Aw bloody crumpets, god save the queen. Some of the lyrics aren't really winners. Too much pervy stalky sex stuff. It was pretty good overall, but this must be the most uncomfortable album to play on your speakers around other people. When "Feeling Called Love" ended, I was like "Well that was pretty uncomfortable. Surely the next song won't be that creepy!" And then I saw the next song was titled "Underwear".
I've pretty much enjoyed every single album that Pulp has dropped. This one especially.

I have complex feelings on this album. Some songs I hated, like Pencil Skirt (kinda misogynistic/not respecting consent, am I right?) or found depressing, like Live Bed Show (maybe that’s the vibe they were going for with that one?) but other songs I liked. Those include Mis-Shapes, Common People, and Disco 2000. A complicated 2.5
It's fine for what it is. It could've used a little shorter of a runtime in my opinion, but I did like it, even though I didn't completely like every single song, it is a complete and digestive project that's enjoyable if you already like the genre. 3.5/5

I gave it a try, listened to the album, but overall never felt that connected with it or engaged. It's not at all bad in any way, and they are excellent musicians, but as a matter of personal taste, I don't like the overall sound or style of this album.

I didn't really want to like this album as I was kinda anti-Britpop in my teens, but it was actually pretty good. I doubt I'll ever listen to it again but it was nice to realise that my teenage prejudices were unfounded.
I love the cover art, and there are a couple of classics on there. Disco 2000 and Common People are great tracks, but so over-played for me as to have become wallpaper. The themes are more interesting than many of their Britpop contemporaries. Sorted for E's and Wizz is a standout track for me. I love the melody and the lyrics describe the late 80's/early 90's rave/ecstasy revolution that I was too young to get into at the time, but have researched with interest since. Pulp to me sound like art college. In a good way.

love a bit of brit-pop
Hadn't heard this one before but I went out and bought it. Has a very Kinks kind of vibe.
A glorious celebration of life with a twist of curtain twitching suburban kink. If Oasis were all cocaine arrogance and Blur were introverted heroin, Pulp were Ecstasy and love, reaching out to the misfits and the mis-shapes saying ‘don’t worry, it’s alright, there’s thousands of us who feel like you, fancy a brew?’ Unashamedly making pogo on the dance floor singalong hits and with the peerless Jarvis Cocker, all angles and oddness, yet perhaps the most charismatic front man of the era, Pulp just made you feel loved. The stories on these tracks are fun and absorbing, the music is layered and energetic, never afraid of adding more strings or synths, and the overall effect is a classic album that never loses its lustre with each repeat play and most likely the highlight of the BritPop era.

Is this a flawless album? Well how about this. I listened to the album without Common People, Sorted for Es and Whizz, Disco 2000 and Mis-Shapes. And you know what? It is - Feeling Called Love, Bar Italia and Underwear would be the singles in any other album. Every track has its own story and sound while also sounding part of a coherent whole.
This and Blur's Great Escape wrap up the 90s half way through the decade. Jarvis and the band is on point; lyrics, themes, melodies and riffs, whispers and croons and yelps. It's in a class on its own.
Britpop is not my thing, but this album has a lot of fun songs, specially Mis-Shapes and Common People. I guess people who enjoy Oasis and Blur will also enjoy this. Favorite tracks: * Mis-Shapes * Dance 2000 * Common People

Different. Class.
I admire Pulp's ability to juxtapose the highly consumable fuzzed brit-pop sound with novelesque narratives of tortured characters in a broken world. You can hear this in the first 4 tracks, which are kind of like couplets of alternating themes. The title track 'Mis-Shapes' is a perfect summary of the struggle of a younger generation coming up against the adversely challenging realities that their elder generations set before them. The story carries on in 'Common People', where two people explore (and ultimately become disillusioned with) just what it would mean to be common. Both tracks have this bubbly pop beat, which make it easy to overlook just how downtrodden these stories really are. Sandwiched between those two tracks is 'Pencil Skirt', which tells the story of a depraved would-be suitor who is stalking someone, persisting past all objections, and content only in the acquisition or torment of the object of their obsession. If you don't like that, then you'll want to steer clear of this character's escalating fantasies in the track "I Spy". And it carries on from there. Each song, something you can easily bop along with as it plays along in the background. Then a lyric grabs your attention, and you find that the stories are increasingly demanding your attention. Somewhere along the way, the pop tunes fall away entirely and you're struggling with the dilemmas of these characters.

I've never really listened to Pulp before (outside of that one song that was on the Venture Bros. - which I liked a lot), but this is pretty good. Better than Blur and significantly better than Oasis. I was starting to think there was no hope for Britpop.

I had never heard of this band, but had heard Common People. This may be the only Britpop I can stand. Really well done. Could be mixed better, as some instruments are too quiet in the background, but it's a really enjoyable 90s British time capsule.

Blur and Oasis are certainly the most popular acts in britpop, but Pulp is the most britpop act in britpop. They're also VERY horny, which I don't like. Otherwise, the songs are alright and serve the genre pretty well.

A very average album. Some highs, some lows, and lots of in between. Nothing particularly bad, but nothing particularly good either.
A great album that was part of the Brit Pop explosion. Lyrics that reminded us of the struggle of everyday people
The blues, as best I can understand it as a 62 year old American, middle class, white guy, is the music of the oppressed, voices that refuse to be silent. There is an underlying hope in the blues, an inner freedom and joy not contingent upon external circumstances. The book of Acts in the Bible witnesses to some of Jesus’ earliest disciples, beaten and imprisoned, singing joyful hymns! Different Class ain’t that. It’s just the bruises and the bondage, as an end to themselves, including desires to fuck everybody else’s wives and mothers, as well as fucking up one’s enemies. Don’t get fooled by the opening track- a call for the marginalized to use their minds rather than fists. The next song (and the rest of the recording) betray the lyricist’s true intentions, and ends with the final track, an invitation to meet at a bar in Soho ‘where other broken people go.’ And that’s that. No direction, purpose, understanding, wisdom, redemption, forgiveness, love, etc. Just brokenness for brokenness' sake. Thank God the music sucked too so I won’t be tempted to give it another listen. I didn’t even enjoy writing the review! Alexa, please put on some Albert King. 1/5 (Because I can’t give it a zero.)

'When you raise your pencil skirt, like a veil before my eyes' fucking love that lyric. Common People is obviously an absolute jam, big fan of that song so was awesome to listen to on a Monday morning, Disco 2000 comes second to that. Really didn't like the song I Spy. F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E is a sensual song, tense af. Now, the album cover, I'm not sure how I feel about it, I love a wedding so that's plus points I guess but the white border on the background is not a vibe and is quite dated (i mean it is for 1995 so I'll let it slide). 6/10
Can't really get the greatness in it, but at least it's not bad.
This was the first album I ever bought. So part of this is nostalgia, but it still holds up incredibly well. Much less “of its time” than the big Britpop albums of the era, this has genuinely interesting, clever songwriting coupled with absolutely banging singalong choruses. What’s not to like!
