Reviews (page 13 of 13)

Music is underwhelming. Voice is not great. No thanks.

ja nee niets dat me opviel

Not bad, not bad.

I don't want to put more thought into this review than the band put into making this album, so I will just note that I do not think that it is very good. I look forward to next week when I will forget about its existence 2/5

Bästa låt: F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.

Bit miserable

I thought I might like it but I really don't. It's just annoying but also weirdly popular

Some reasonable songs - Pulp were a sort of modern day Kinks, but (surprise!) I don't like them.

A lot of the lyrics and the whispery voice kinda creeped me out. Definitely not my favourite.

With the exception of “Common People”, a thoroughly unremarkable album. I thought I liked Britpop when I lived through it in the ‘90s, but it’s been 25 years and Times and tastes change.

Didn’t listen to it all just cus I hadn’t got the time, wasn’t a huge fan of the small amount I heard tho. Pretty sure a 2 is what I would have given it anyway so I’ll just stick with that

Easy listening, enjoyable if not memorable. It got progressively worse though

Boooo!

Best lekker

thought I would like it more. kind of boring

Classic Meh

I'm learning that Pulp is pretty hot and miss with me. Mostly misses here. I liked "Something Changed", felt that it brought together their unique cocktail of cynicism & earnestness nicely.

Not offensive, but very forgettable.

Kind of a lame British punk rock band. Nothing too extraordinary here. Highlights: -Common People -Monday Morning

There was an overindulgence in the mid 90s from British bands that never really spoke to me. Not horrible but I feel like this album is such a strong response to the pop of the early 90s that it feels a bit silly.

Bowie Esk

Didn't do a lot for me, unfortunately. It's a fine album, I just found myself relatively uninterested. Jarvis Cocker's delivery ranges from fine, to weirdly seductive to me. Songs are fine. Guess I'm more of a Blur fan. Favorite track: "Disco 2000"

Awful. Might be the worst I've heard yet.

Very weird and rapey would not recommend.

Lyrics are creepy af

wow nope

I actually can’t stand pulp no matter how hard I try his voice puts me off so much. It kind of gave me a lot of nothing. Pencil Skirt actually hurt me to listen to, why is he singing like that I can’t. Only Chino Moreno can moan/whisper in my ear like that.

Rape album???

No more Britpop please.

Song writing is not interesting. I don’t think I will ever put this on again. Creepy lyrics. I’m not sure why it’s on this jawn.

This is not my thing. Even if the guy was not a pervert and the lyrics were not offensive, I still would not like it. The best song is Feeling Called Love (I refuse to use all the periods). If you insist on listening start there.

Never been a Pulp fan... Growing up British I heard Common People like almost everyday unwillingly... One listen through this album was enough for me!

Didn’t like it

I am only 4 tracks in and I am already begging for this to be over. God I hate this. Common People so bad, the vocals here are like nails on a chalkboard.

This is the kind of pretentious nonsense where the singer thinks his words look so good on the page that he doesn't bother writing decent melodies; he just talk-sings his way through the tracks. The rest of band matches that lack of effort by providing bland chords and lifeless arrangements - it's the perfect marriage of dull and duller. (And regarding the ridiculous narrative of "Common People", I'll take "Things That Never Happened" for $500, Alex.)

This is just…. Not good

Boring voice…not my ting.

Not for me

Did not like

Singing was ok, lyrics gave me the creeps at times which ruined the other songs too much

Didn't listen

really serious boring

Bad, bad album. Creepy lyrics, boring instrumentals, and a half-assed attempt at being Bowie and The Smiths, the latter of which is also quite bad. Nothing I enjoyed about this album whatsoever. Favorite track: none

It’s music I guess. Not my kind. Sounds like lyrics written by a high school boy.

Not for me

i don't like pulp

Sounds like a bad 80's movie soundtrack to me. I really didn't like this at all. I have no idea how this is supposed to be such an acclaimed Britpop album.

Not my vibe.

Didnt listen

Not the most wholesome

Not for me!

I really truly hate this and wish I hadn't listened to it

398/1089 - I knew Common People before listening to this which I don't really care for, it's repetitive and annoying. It doesn't matter to me if the lyrics or message are good. If the music is bad, the song is bad. Overall, the lip smacks, dull nursery-rhyme music, and cheating lyrics really bring this down. I'm convinced Blur is the only good Britpop group.

We're almost up to when you guys were born, lol. But, unfortunately (for me, anyway): pompous/pretentious, stressful/histrionic, unmusical/untuneful noise; no, thanks! Music by people who love theater (but not music)? I listened, dutifully (but with increasing dread) to all 12 tracks. I didn't like (hated, basically) all of them. It's difficult (impossible?) for me to like a band when I don't like the singer. And I don't like this "singer." Won't be (voluntarily) listening to any of this again. 1 star.

Gross lyrics, mid musically. Somewhere between 1 and 2. I guess since I felt icky for most of my listening experience I’ll give it a 1.

Over the top theatrical. Boring. Boo.

Sleek, mid-tempo grooves built from chiming guitars, supple bass lines, discreet synth textures, and Jarvis Cocker’s dry, observant vocals move this Britpop album like riding the top deck of a city bus at night—gliding past lit windows full of other people’s lives, sharp and fascinating to watch, yet never being able to watch as the bus moves.

Another slog through boring britpop. This album seems to have a particularly strong influence from Lou Reed, which really makes it that much worse. The lyricism, the vocal style and timbre, it’s all so grossly Lou Reed, and for that reason I really struggled to sit through this one. I’ll take just about any other boring britpop over this one, thanks.

Nah, real whiney bitch

Schlimm

Couldn't get through it

They said a LOT of weird stuff about women....

Lyrics are awkward. So violent and abusive.

Yikes to Pencil Skirt so I'll give this a miss.

I wish I would have clicked the 'Did Not Listen' button. But I did listen. And it sucked. I just wished I didn't.

Che lagna

Eh, not my jam.

Ummm...just not really my thing. I feel like that's really all there is to say about this album.

Tfw I am an awesome cool rockstar and I have le epic (and sometimes even consensual) sex. Britpop? More like SHITpop amirite?

unlistenable

Listen to the song Common People and skip the rest. The singer tries to sound sexy but comes across as an out-of-breath incel creep. And the lyrics really reinforce this point. I try to be fairly sex positive and I’m positive no one should have sex with anyone in this band. Do not recommend.

Im confused. It's like the Clash listened to Bowie and Leonard Cohen, but more perverted? 1/5

If I wanted to hear a brit moan I'd fuck one

Music wasn't terrible. Lyrics were

My shit isn't as shitty as this shit is.

Pedophile music

All the songs sound the same.

Very forgettable. Nothing stood out. Not sure why this was included in the list.

Boring dad rock, ofc common people is a bop but William shatner did a better cover lol

This is a no for me, did not like it

More like Poop- Different Ass

Sounds like someone wanted to imitate flight of the concords, but took themselves too seriously. Unlistenable in parts, unless i imagined Brett doing that whisper singing to be funny.

I guess I just never connected with this band. It's not that I don't like Britpop, or dour indie guitar pop in general, I do. It's not that I don't respect Jarvis and his sexy takes on modern misery, it's just that none of this moves me, particularly, and I find the general tenor, vibe and flavor a little tiresome, a little... flaccid? Maybe if I were a Brit, I dunno. I grew up in the right time period, I like Blur, and I guess Suede is probably fine? Somehow I'm able to tolerate Morrissey, who is a monster, while Jarvis, who seems like a decent bloke, just sort of ruins the whole thing for me with his whispery come-ons? Maybe it's more of my inherent prejudice against music by, for and about beautiful people? It's a mystery, but Pulp does nothing for me.

Pulp was well under my radar through the 80s and 90s. Although I became something of a Jarvis Cocker fan from his solo work in the early 2000s, I can't say I'm impressed by this album. Familiar with Common People, but that's it.

Gefällt mir auch überhaupt nicht. 1 Stern.

I found the vocal mix extremely harsh to my ears and It made it rather unbearable to complete the album.

Ugh. Not today, Pulp. Not today.

I just don’t like the Brit Pop sound. This band sounds pretty self-absorbed, which is par for the genre. This is a 1, for me.

Not my barrel of beer

Amazing... just speechless really

The poster child for bands championed by the British music press on the basis of politics and class prejudices. Unbearable Brit Pop cringe.

Britpop

if i could give this a 0 it would still be too generous. i hate this album so much. stop whispering you loser, this is just brit pop maroon 5. except at least maroon 5 doesn't put on airs. oh yeah we're so smart we dont need guns to change the world we'll use our minds isn't that cool anyways let me see your tits

no. not interested.

Can't stand the singers style. Overly whiney and pretentious. Instruments are overly saturated making them difficult to distinguish from one another. Thankfully not every song is like that, and some are very clear, but the ones that aren't are jarring. Idk, maybe I just need to be more depressed to enjoy this band. I have trouble believing this ranks 6th of all-time in the NME rankings. Maybe Brit-pop just isn't my thing. Since I have to add at least one song to my 1001 songs playlist, I guess I'll pick "Common People" but even that one is little annoying. ~ 1 Star

I don’t care

Not my jam. Just mid - at best. Something about his voice is unpleasant to me.

britpop isnt for me

Musically pretty good. Head nodding stuff. Lyrically and vocally though? Rough is a small understatement. Dude is trying really hard to sound sexy and it is hard not to cringe. He's way too horny and sounds like he's touching himself half the time. The lyrics are just as bad. Guy needs to talk it out in therapy.

Like musical theater, Carol King, or Bob Dylan, these songs clearly started with lyrics and had melody and musical structure built up, almost as an afterthought, to deliver them. The problem is these lyrics are neither clever, interesting, nor witty. This poor guy developed one hell of an inferiority complex at prep school. He’s just too simple and conceited to say anything interesting about it.

Britpop is garbage.

Not for me. 1/5

Im just not a fan of pulp

1, generic brit pop rock

Didn't pique my interest at all.

The band name, cover art, and album title are all bland and forgettable. The topics of the songs and the delivery of the vocals are very off-putting. It's an entire album of a skeezy man in plaid bragging about affairs with married women while trying to sound sultry over some really primitive beats and contrived melodies. It's like a comical version of The Cure meets Elvis Costello. I can see people liking this if they grew up on it, but it's otherwise lost on me. "Common People" has the elements to be a decent song, but aside from that one, I loathed everything about this. 1.35 for the seductive vampire impersonator.

Sooo self indulgent. Soporific as well

One of those albums you keep listening to because you're convinced there will be at least one good tracj. There's not.

Boring. I get it. It's English and sexual and alluring...The Smiths did it better. At one point I actually asked myself, out loud, "people enjoy this?" I can see where there would be appeal, but It's truly. not for me. "F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E." was the best track because it sounds the least like the rest of the album. That was actually interesting. The rest is trash.

Did not find anything to grab me. This is definitely one of those culture things.

Brit rock from the 1990s really was among the most boring music coming out in the world. Dreadfully bad retreading of terrible Elvis Costello stuff. Not the first time I'd heard stuff from this album. My first contact was the track "I Spy" from this album when it appeared on the Mission Impossible soundtrack. Was one of the weakest tracks on that soundtrack. Best British album that came out in 1995? Not this one. It was David Bowie's OUTSIDE. While bands like Pulp were trying to make albums that sounded like David Bowie from the 1960s and 1970s, David himself had moved on and was making challenging records in new genres. Just like Blur, London Suede, and Oasis, Pulp managed to make another album of boring ass indie rock that is bereft of actual emotion and relies entirely too much on turn of phrase lyrics and not enough on sonically interesting music with good hooks.

Much like the last pulp album, This is hardcore, I really cant stand this brand of brit pop.

A couple ok songs, but Pencil Skirt was creepy and left a bad taste in my mouth. Back half of the album is better, but still just super creepy.

No. Terrible pop music sung by someone who can’t sing. I’ve never heard this before and think there is a reason. Yuck

Not great

Not for me.

Not my style

Third album in a row that sounds the same as the last one.

Yet more Britpop. One of the trash genres from the 90s along with New Jack Swing.

The most drab, boring and tasteless bits of Bowie, Arcade Fire and Coldplay combined. This album was a slog and I couldn't wait for it to be over. No distinct style or personality of its own. 1/5

Skipping this!

breathy class consciousness with The Misogynist Bryan

With every listen, I am less likely to read this book.

Flight of the conchords?

i couldn't make it through the first song of this whiney, jangly mess.

it's like a nightmare, you're hanging from the gallows, struggling for air and the hangman is laughing at you and then you grow up. You think oh shit and ask yourself what was that, then you hear it in the background, that nasal voice of Jarvis Cocker. I can't eat enough, I want to puke like crazy. Minus one star!!!

With all the truly great albums made by truly talented musicians, how the hell does some of this crap make it to this list?

Creepy AF.

This was ass. It sounds like an 80s pop rock album, but it came out 10 years too late. Not a single thing memorable about this.

#6 greatest album of all time????????? This was very hard to listen too. It sucked.

Dollar store Davie Bowie

How is another Pulp album on this list? This lead singer is awful. His lyrics are awful. Everything is hypersexualized. This was true in Pulp's last record... So this dude didn't progress and wrote the same shit. Not only that but I'm starting to think this dude is just a pervert. I really think he burdens the band. Sure he could be involved in other aspects to why this band has positives. But just his vocal and lyrical approach burdens this band. If I was in a band, and my lead singer approached our music with what this dude does... I would kick him out. In fact... I don't think this band deserves me to pick out the good vs the bad. Two albums of the same perverted, predator shit.... I would pay someone to not put this record or band on. It's a shame because there is good stuff going on musically but the lead singer ruins everything for me. The first album, I tried my best to enjoy the process of listening and rating the album by pointing out all of the shitty lyrics but I just can't do that for a second time. I just don't care. This was a tough listen for someone who appreciates good lyricsm. I'm trying my hard not to be biased as I confidently say that I hate this band... There's some cool musical ideas. But I don't need to get into which.

Muy básico

firttsbke lobby music f

Make a,note to save and listen

I fail to see what makes this stand out over anything else. It could’ve been somebody just banging out the same note on a piano the entire album and I would not have noticed the difference.

Not my cup of tea, surprisingly. I love 90s era music but this just felt like they were trying hard to be Bowie with poor lyrics. Bummer.

Didn’t like the lyrics didn’t finish

Very forgetful. Not a single song stood out. Not my type of jams.

this list has been a bit "brit" heavy so far.

Gefällt mir nicht

¡Hombre, la boda de mi cuñado! Con zombis.

Da fuck is this? Painful.

Normally I like these kinds of bands, not this one though

I think this one made me quit the project for a while. I did not like Pulp at all and did not want to listen to this. I really like Britpop, but this is not my thing. It is very bland overall, very few tracks stand out to me, and many gave me an icky feeling. I might be biased because Pulp bored the hell out of me in the past, so I may not be open to liking this album, but I think I'm alright not giving them any more of a chance. Favorite song: Something Changed (Despite everything I do actually like this song a fair bit) Just realized this was for my birthday in 2023! What a terrible gift.

Dreadful.

I don’t like the singers voice, so it made it tough to listen to the whole album. Listen again: Purchase for my collection: Favourite Song:

Yikessss it felt v bowie and then got weird. The lyrics didn't have much substance.

I really hate this sort of music, almost nothing gets me there

leads off with a song that made me think this might be good, but no such luck. ranges from numbers for a musical I'd never want to see to songs that were somehow written with the hope they'd eventually be included in an awful indie movie from 2005. none of the instruments are played with any recognizable emotion, and cocker's voice is better suited to hosting a children's tv show. hard pass

The whisper vocals are annoying at best. The vocals make this unlistenable.

Lyrics aren’t interesting and delivered in a strange unsatisfying way. Musically nothing special. Overall not very good, trying too hard and not doing it successfully. 1/5 Won’t listen again

didn’t like it but proud that i recognised jarvis cocker’s voice since i listed to the french dispatch songs so much after it came out.

terrible

generally boring album with 1/2 decent songs

Trying to be early cool punk but missed.

There wasn't a single track on this album that wasn't bland and unimaginative. I'm surprised that these guys didn't die of boredom while playing these songs.

Not a fan of the sound unfortunately.

Not enduring any more of these mediocre britpop albums for the sake of this project.

Cheating

Please write a song about something other than self-loathing or fucking. I'm begging. Creepy and insufferably smug. "Underwear" made me want to throw up a little

Juvenile

i didn’t like this

This is pitchfork bs they are trying way too hard to be bowie, lyrics are cringe af

Quite simply, this is not to my taste! Whilst it's not bad pop rock there is nothing on this album that isn't overly forgettable. As harsh as it may sound, I feel this is for people who don't really have an understanding, or real care, for music and are happy for the odd repeatable lyric they can sing along to in a drunken stupor.

while this album had a few good selections near the tail end, the beginning was tragic to say the least and made it hard to even think about finishing it. between the horrendous vocal performance, where they were pitchy more than they were on top of the notes, and the random points where they would just talk in a mildly sensual way for no apparent reason, it wasn’t a great showing either lyrically or vocally for the band. it seemed to stay topically focused on sex or sexual themes, only deviating a few times. the good selections mentioned above were bar italia, a song that was sonically pleasing, even if the lyrics were repetitive and one dimensional, a story about wanting to go to a bar, where other broken people stay. the other good song was Common People, although i mightve only liked it because of its refreshing theme of wanting to be like “Common People” opposed to wanting to live like a rockstar. It also had a very catchy melody, one vaguely similar to the vocals of “kids in the USA”. if you like pitchy brit pop, you might like this.. this was certainly not for me though…

I gave it a try, listened to the album, but overall never felt that connected with it or engaged. It's not at all bad in any way, and they are excellent musicians, but as a matter of personal taste, I don't like the overall sound or style of this album.

Creepy. Should be playing in the background of a porn video.

It's safe to say I didn't enjoy this album. Apart from the song Common People. 1/5 stars.

I guess the only thing worse than American pop is British pop?

ahahah this band sucks

1/5 I don't think its their best work. I was physically in pain.

Anstrengend. Ich mag das nicht. Musste nach dem 4. Song ausmachen.

did not like it

Nice gentle Beatles album. Not too pop.

Just can't get into this
