Reviews (page 12 of 13)
A good sounding album but some very odd lyrics.
I think this band heard all the sexy R&B coming out of North America at the time and thought "we can do that too but in British pop rock". Nope. Also it just has a very generic Brit pop sound, long slow strums, monotone voices that sound disinterested. lame!
Enjoyed Common People… the rest was ho hum creepy perv pop. This is a one and done for me
Indifferent
NOT MY FAVORITE
I shed a tear every time I have to listen to britpop again.
Definitely a one-hit-wonder artist. I thoroughly enjoyed Common People. His horny whisper voice made me laugh a few times. Legendary line: "I've kissed your mother twice and now I'm working on your dad." I liked the orchestral sound in a couple of the songs, added some depth. If this was released in the 80s it would get 3 stars.
Completely forgettable brit-pop.
Meh, this was average at best. Better than a 2 but closer to a 2 than 3. 2.5/5
Truly annoying Brit pervert vocals. Would be a 1 star except that I think Common People is almost good, a deserved rip on hedonist dilettantes. Music has a lot of 'people! they're so dull!', good to have a bit of 'people are exhausted all the time' counterpoint. music: appreciated. (⌐■_■)
An actual magazine called this the sixth greatest album of all time. That is truly incredible. It tells a guy a lot about the English mind. A weird, horny, semi-concept album about class? Songs that sound lifted directly from past British artists? There was a song that sounded just like Bowie right? And it’s the sixth greatest album of all time!? What on earth.
Really didn't like it.
This wasn’t unlistenable but it just sounded like someone that only ever listened to Bowie
I thought this was ass
Different than I would normally used to but fun, hippy folk rock, not bad.
Not as good as I thought it would be. Two classic songs but the rest didn't really stand out at all, and some of it made my toes curl
Meh. They sound like they want to be The Cure. But not as good.
british nonsense
Quite boring, I might‘ve been too stupid to understand it though
Not sure why this highly rated. Oasis and Blur are much better. 2 stars.
Not nearly as clever as they think they are.
Meh. A more enjoyable Morrisey...
This sounds far older than 30 years old, doesn't help it's boring either. A feeling caller love was good though.
Don’t have much impression on it
Track 2, I love when you tell me to stop, its turning me on, really killed the mood for me. Only knocking it to a 2 since I suspect its meant to be first person antagonist, not just voice of the artist, but I don't want to listen to that.
So overrated ugh
It made me feel nothing.
This guy was just creepy sounding
The lyrics are sometimes clever and fun but then get a bit rapey, so that's not great. Some of the music is alright, most of its a bit tedious. The vocals are pretty annoying.
This album is interesting. It's well put together, aurally interesting, and clever album. It has catchy hooks, and complexity. But somehow I hate it, not sure why exactly it just puts me on edge. 2/10.
Not my genre of music but I liked it for what it is. Probably a one and done listen. I can’t pinpoint any exact criticisms but I can’t see how this could be named the 6th greatest album of all time.
Common People. Yawn.
The music never got particularly interesting for me and it felt like every song is about the same thing. Common people tho
Nett, knapp an 3 vorbei.
2/5
I only listened to the first two or three songs and it was weird vibes
Nope
Songs have a cool vibe that reminds me of The Cure, but most of them are too long and boring. The constant talking on tracks really bothers me for some reason.
Not good not bad. Didn't need to skip any songs, but wouldn't probably listen again.
Some British dudes kinds soft jammin in the 90s
Don’t know why, but I can’t take the lyrics serious or meant to be honest.
First listen. Not my cup of tea.
I had trouble taking this album seriously. The songs needed more edge. "Sorted For E's & Wizz" is good, but "F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E" just didn't work for me. And pay attention to the lyrics - the singer seems to have a high opinion of himself.
Not really my cup of tea but respect the hustle
ik kende niks buiten Common People... album uitgeluisterd... ken nog steeds niks buiten Common People... zegt genoeg
Brit pop con voce anni 80
This felt like I was being seduced. A little slow most of the album and I can't say there were any songs I liked in particular. Kind of a fever dream this one
A few songs were catchy, but overall, a bit boring
++: Mis-Shapes, I Spy +: Pencil Skirts, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E, Monday Morning, Bar Italia +-: Something Changed, Sorted for E's & Wizz, Underwear -: Disco 2000, Live Bed Show --: Common People 5,0/10
Had no clue Pulp sang Common People. That was a pleasant surprise. Otherwise, the other songs are fine, but sorta just blended together.
Really didnt vibe with this album
Telling myself that English britpop/rock isn’t derivative and mundane for the millionth time while wearing a clinically insane smile on my face and manically clawing at the walls that surround me
A worse the cure
interesting, and might have been good at the time, but I'm not going to invest any more time with this one.
very slow and boring feels like artic monkeys discovered this album and that was the turning point in their career would rather listen to the smiths
Quirky brit pop that is a bit shoe gazer like at times. Sometimes the singer's voice during the more hushed singing reminds me a bit of Michael Hutchence. Not bad at what they do, but this stuff doesn't really grab me.
Wow, what a bunch of weirdos! Would have thought that this album had come from the 80s. I just didn't love it. Sorry, guys.
I only liked one song... Pencil Skirt
Horny british guy sings pretty decent but then starts talking and things get weird. Good instrumentation, I understand why people may enjoy this not for me personally.
Didn't like this at all. Sorry everyone!
Not my jam.
Eh. Some of it is reminiscent of Velvet Underground. Pretty bland brit-pop all said.
I liked this is hardcore more. Really dont got really interesting or special at any given point to be honest
Not my favorite, good sounding, but so self absorbed that it is off-putting
50 minutes of this guy muttering nonsense while sucking air through his teeth, with inconsequential pop musical writing. Nothing noteworthy.
Reminded me of Bowie minus the good music. Idk boring cracker shit, reminds me of xtc
Different class? More like different album, please!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing bad here really, just sounds unoriginal and at this point, with the amount of albums on here that shouldn’t be that I’ve heard, I’m getting pretty tired of these “must hear albums”
If no one in the world hates British pop after the late 1970’s, then I am dead. Probably killed by a Smiths fan
Not a fan, but mildly amusing.
Genuinely love this whole endeavor but sometimes I wish someone other than a biritish baby boomer made this list.
Familiarity breeds contempt.
Seems like it was meant to be satirical or make a point but it was a little erotic for my taste… some good tunes here and there though. Probably 2.5 stars
I only had time to listen to the first few songs. It was ok
Not my thing. One Hit with Common People but the rest is boring.
Not a album a knew well. Even the singles have not aged well. Part of the BritPop thing - Cockers lyrics now seem weird and kinda pervy in places.
Hmm. I should have liked this, but I didn’t. I just feel like there’s already a lot of other 90s Britpop I prefer over this. I’m actually surprised this came out in the 90s; I just assumed this was from the 80s.
Impossible to truly love a British person’s voice, but quite fun otherwise
Not that bad but fuck all the britpop on here
Just bad British music
Nothing special. I listened to it but nothing got stuck in my head.
That’s rapist!
some fun, but mostly meh. 2.5 stars. Britpop...
Ehhhh. 2 stars
This Common People song has been on a playlist of mine for probably 10 years. Always odd to hear songs like that in the wild. Other than that song this album didn't really feel like much. The only song that made me perk up was the first song that autoplayed after the album ended.
brit pop but without the Oasis or Blur color
Not for me 2.5/5
This became incredibly grating
Sonically overall it's fine but kind of becomes a grey blob. Common People is some how catchy. The vocal stylings do the same thing too much and made me ignore the lyrics.
I didn't know this band, but I recognized Common People, and I do like that song. However, though the actual music was agreeable enough, there were too many times where the lyrics just killed it for me. For example, Disco 2000 (which sounds like Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) mixed with Bruce Springstein, but not really anything unique itself) has a good pop rock song structure. But the lyrics make me cringe, and I can't get past it, especially when the music itself isn't anything groundbreaking. Like yeah, this guy would definitely be on r/theredpill. I didn't feel this way with every song. I really like the lyrics for Sorted for E's & Wizz, actually. But overall, it's not a high ranking album for me.
Great voice with not much to say.
Not for your boy
I kept getting confused the this album was from sometime in the 70s/80s rather than 1995 because it was so New Wavey and not Blur/Oasis brit pop. Pleasant listening though
1.MIs-Shapes: very British would call it perhaps a British Smash Mouth but so far alright. Political 👍 +1 2.Pencil Skirt: THIS SONG IS FUCKIN SO WEIRD -5 3.Common People: most popular song but another weird trippy 90s synth fuck music . Maybe I’m not hearing the music and just listening. Could see this in a movie. David Bowie influenced??? 4.
ok
Meh. Fine. Not 1000 albums before I die great.
band kid type beat. mis shapes- 5 or 6 pencil skirt- oh. 3 or 4. or 2..... common people- 4. too long i spy- 4 disco 2000- 2 or 3 live bed show- stop. 3 something changed- 3 im not doing this gang this shit is ass
Ew British
Not terrible, but uninspiring altish rock. Meh.
Waaaaaaaay too horny and kinda rapey. Seriously, bro needs a cold shower and a re-think of his life choices.
brit rock, some catchy songs, kind of annoying at the same time, not my cup of tea. some bowie progressions, space oddity in first track
It's alright, the band is good at music.
Not for me. However i find it interesting that this was a 5th album by Pulp. Right now artists are forced to succeed with their first efforts.
Average British pop. Not much to note and didn't want to finish the album. 5/10 (2.5/5)
Pencil Skirt is echt verschrikkelijk. 2/5 too edgy 4 me FAVO: Common People, Disco 2000
Rating: 6,5/10 Highlights: Common People, Underwear
meh
Wow. I just... really did not like this. Made me feel not good.
Very annoying vocals, mediocre lyrics
My first thought was "David Bowie fronts the Pixies" but after a few songs I was surprised. This album is all over the place. By the time "Underwear" started I realized I should have paid closer attention to the lyrics. It could grow on me, possibly...
God. I think Pulp are sadly one of the most overrated British bands. This is their pinnacle and it's still pretty shite. Take away Common People and Disco 2000 and it's a horrible album seemingly written by a perv. How the hell these headlined Glasto is beyond me. 2* for the aforementioned two songs.
Favourite songs: Disco 2000, Common People, Sorted for E's & Wizz Least favourite songs: I Spy, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. 2/5
Not my taste. Theme seemed to be seductive breathy rock. I enjoyed Common People but the other tracks melded together for me.
nice
My poor ears
Didn’t really care for it tbh
Something about Jarvis's writing and delivery really irks me, especially the little bursts of desperate faux-sincerity he throws out to justice an awkward rhyme or give some life to the monotony. Its over-identification with the working class underdog to the point of phoniness, even smug superiority. But there are definitely some nostalgic tunes here, I just hate having to listen to more than ten minutes of it.
As always with Britpop albums, there’s some pretty solid Britpop songs on this. Some of them are even arguably great, or at least I imagine they’d feel epic when used in a music soundtrack or something. In theory, I like this record’s concept critiquing posh culture and bourgeois/upper crust snobbery. There’s a handful of songs I’d add to a playlist or two. But a lot of this just feels too British for my tastes, and also a bit too forced. The hooks feel forced, the insights feel forced, the playing feels forced. Maybe I wouldn’t add them to a playlist, but they wouldn’t kill my vibe if they were on my friend’s playlist. Then again, some songs are also obnoxious, and overly British, and overly snarky in a way that annoys me, like a drunk self-proclaimed Communist who corners you at a dinner party to talk about theory. I wouldn’t buy this album for myself, but I also wouldn’t tolerate a friend playing it at a dinner party, either. Maybe I’m just exhausted with Britpop at this point, maybe I just don’t like this particular album, but I’m never going to revisit this for a full listen ever again. One time was a chore in itself. I think this is just not to my taste, even if it seems like it would be on paper (see, Commie, praxis v. theory). But I’m also not stupid. “Common People” is one of the greatest songs ever written. That alone warrants this album’s praise. And the rest of it, while lesser, is certainly good enough to argue some level of essential listening.
sucked
I have zero recollection of this album from 1995. After listening to it I can’t say I will have a lot of recollection in 2025. I enjoyed the listen. It reminded of post-Labyrinth Bowie meets OMD. Key songs were I Spy and Common People. I’m not sure I would look for this again though.
Meh. I know I'm supposed to be intrigued by Jarvis slumming it with the Common People. Maybe I'm too basic to get this class exploration. Maybe I'm too American. Anyway, Common People is a fun song but the rest I could do without.
There's something about this that just washes over me. Maybe the production needs more bite to it, but the songs aren't very interesting either. Multiple 6-minute songs that don't need to be that long either. If I'm being honest, I don't want to listen to this again. Common People is pretty good, though.
2.25 per track. Good god, stop with this type of album!!
hard pass-the vocals are awful. do not understand the hype with them. yes, frontman sounds bit like Bowie, but the droning/talking/mumbling are boring & so is the overly stylized music. no thanks at all. 1.5 stars
Drowning, mishmash of the same sounding songs over again. Feel like Jarvis cocker trying so hard to be Morrissey it hurts. Not for me. 2/5
Even the good songs would have been much better if they were sung by someone else. Incessant droning.
I don't get the fuss about this album.
Another album that proves this album was compiled by people with bland tastes... Good lord how can these UK acts be so bad all the time.
joa
Better than most of the britpop on this list
I’d never heard of them before. Not sure I’d listen to them again.
Zzz zzz 2/5
A little too pervy at times for me. This didn't age well, if it was even good at one point. 2/5
Blind album and artist. Not enjoying this one and I don't know why... just not my thing...
Mis-Shapes: ‘’The future’s owned by you and me’’ très britpop Common People: ‘’I said, in that case I’ll have rum and Coca-Cola’’ I like the beat of this one (synth) chansons que t’écoutent en voiture la fenêtre ouverte I Spy: l’histoire lol j’aime le beat par contre, mystérieux et puis il crie presque c’est bien parfois je trouve que les paroles se chantent bien
made me want to listen to bowie. some songs were fine. overall it just felt really basic, nothing interesting or unique
I like Disco 2000 and I expected something less mellow based on that. Left me cold.
Just ok
4/10 didn't leave an impression
No. At first it sounded ok, but then the songs started to all sound the same. The tracks don’t feel all that special. The singing is terrible as well. It tries to be weird with its lyrics and vocals, but it just doesn’t work. Other people might like this, but I don’t.
#166. This was painfully British. Yikes, dude. The only good part of it is the knowing that since I've never once heard or even heard of this is the past 29 years, it's unlikely I'll ever have to hear it again. 2/5: terrible
Pulp Too much low creepy singing/ whispering in my ears. I am really tired of this style of singing.I don’t really get the Brit pop thing. Sounds just like the 80’s English rock but it’s 1995? Best songs: common people
Weird, intense and creepy. One point for really leaning into it but once is enough for me.
Some decent songs but couldn’t really get into it.
Escuchable.
…so uh yeah
Not the worst, but not great
Quirky
The British are interesting people - most folks would be a bit appalled to hear a man who can’t sing be horny on main while chintzy pop instrumentals drone on in the background, but apparently that’s a chart topper across the pond.
Sounds like the kind of music Toby Maguire's Peter Parker would dance to in Spider-Man 3. Nothing to get that excited about.
Seems like every British alternative band just sucks in my opinion Top tracks: Disco 2000
Definitely was underwhelmed with this one. I read that this was #5 album on albums of all-time in NME in 2013. I don't get it. I guess I'm not british enough. 2/5
Nothing special, but Feeling Called Love is a Standout.
Creepy David Bowie want-to-be.
Radio Brit rock Safely unadventurous Boldly quite boring
Way too kitsch for me.
This really must be a band only the British care about. I remember Common People from William Shatner's cover of it. I found the album kinda boring.
Totally fine, but I listened to it 3 days ago and haven’t thought about it once since.
Forgettable slop.
I'm fine with it, can't remember much about it now. Will I listen to again: 10%
Kind of creepy.
A couple of songs that everyone know, and a bunch of poo
Eh
Didn’t love it.
Hm. Okay
pop and synth sounds are solid and unapologetically British, but the singer is absolutely terrible and ruins most of the album
I am tired of the British bias of this project. Wow, this album was a big hit in England. And Scotland. And no where else. If it's so great, why didn't it catch on else where? In the future, it's tempting to check the charts before listening, and if I see that the album was only big in England, I should just go ahead and give an automatic 3 stars. Max! This one gets 2 for being so mediocre. In the real world, on a scale of 1-10, I might give this 6. Maybe. But I also might just do 5. It's fine, but it's just nothing special, and it irks me that it's on this list, so I'm going with 5 (out of 10), converting to a 5 star scale, and rounding down.
Pretty good music as long as you don't listen to the words
It's fine (shrug) for the era it's from. Though it feels more 80's than a mid-90's record. Some good songs on the backend: FEELINGCALLEDLOVE, Underwear, Bar Italia. But not a style I'm into that much. Probably won't revisit.
Britpop. Not all that interesting. A lot of lyrics about sleeping with other men's wives.
I had never heard of Pulp until this came up on my daily album. I really really tried to like it, I listen to it twice. About 3 songs appealed to me, the rest were just not anything special and while I’m not a prude the lyrics were just awful. I’m giving it two stars because I did enjoy some of the songs, but just not enough to make it listenable again.
Saai, veel van hetzelfde. Common People kan het verschil niet maken
Not a fan, accent and delivery feel a bit like Super Hans having a go at fronting a Britpop group
Not bad but whatever. Maybe a different day it'll hit harder. First track is definitely fun and an interesting chamber pop rock kind of thing if that seems fair to assess.
Didn't hate it, but maybe didn't 'get it'. Liked a lot of the music itself (sans lyrics), however the singer gave me serious Aldous Snow vibes.
First half was interesting, second half average. Stand out songs: Pencil Skirt, I Spy
Sub par not my style. Kinda techno vibes sometimes
A lot to say about nothing; halfway enjoyable until you realize this is nothing more than one of David Bowie’s worst albums.
I'm pretty tired of boring forgettable brit pop dominating the list. Nothing makes the album special.
Don’t really like the vocalist/talk singing. Sounds 80s. Instrumentals are deece though
Not my style
Not feeling it
Weird haphazard collection of mediocre and sometimes creepy songs. Not my bag
Disco 2000 bekannt, schlüpfrige Texte (Vorbild Bloodhound Gang?), interessanter Synthy Gitarren Mix
Just meh.
Best Songs: Underwear Listen Again: No
Already like Common People. First song made my teeth hurt. Second is boring. Oy. Turns out I don’t really like this. It’s trying too hard to be cute. Lots of posing. But the quality just isn’t there. It’s on par with Oasis or Coldplay. Ordinary. Not special or inventive. Like, they want to be Blur, but it’s not even close. Disappointed with this one. Expected better. So much hype for this band. This was boring.
Fantastic, more Pulp! Did anyone say ever? Not me!
I hate the singer - he's like offbranf David Bowie. It actually reminds me of the British album I listened to recently which was also horrible lmao. Reminds me of some song from Rick and Morty that I thought sounded bad on purpose. The band and surrounding music is pretty good. Sort of a classic case of me hating the song or band because the singer is unlistenable. There's some story telling in the lyrics, and I have never really liked that much. Still don't like it here. Yeah I just don't like story telling songs. I don't listen to lyrics, and the music that goes along is not interesting enough. Disco 2000 was actually kinda fun - it was upbeat and no story telling. F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. - "Why are they spelling" Overall pretty not good for me. Didn't like the singer too much.
Listened up until "Common People".
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: it’s ok, feel the hype is a bit too much on this one for me personally Favourite song: Track 3 - Common People
I can see it's broad appeal & appreciate the musicianship of the group, but definitely not for me.
Just didn't like it that much tbh. Maybe in a different mood.
eh, not a fan of this band
Not bad.
"Common people" is good, the rest not so much
Never heard of this album or this band before. First of all the vocals sound excaly like David Bowie, just leave it there. At the hight of BritPop this album fit in perfection with other bands like Oasis or Blur, i don't think this album is better that Moring glory for example. But there are some good songs like: Mis-Shapes, Monday Morning or Common Peoples. Overall is more pop than rock, with a little bit of experimental, not bad but not a masterpiece i think
Chill Classic Rock from the 90's. Worrying lyrics and a bit repetitive.
Not riffy enough for me, and Jarvis was too snarky when he wasn't being dirty - the big hits were odious compared to the better bands. Musically this stuff is dreadful
I have never heard of Pulp before this generator. They sound like the precursor to bands such as The Strokes and Artic Monkeys. While easy to listen to, Britpop isn't often my jam.
Pencil Skirt is dark. Throwback to the sounds of Velvet Underground. Bar Italia is a like a drunken dream song.

Better, but not great
So English. Listen with a pint of bitter in your hand. How is this not Damon Albarn?
It was not my favourite album but I could absolutely see it growing on me after a re-listen or two. It’s very complex and layered with all kinds of different sounds and is really well produced. Many moments remind me a bit of David Bowie because of the use of many abstract themes and sounds, and the voice is similar as well. There’s lots of songs that are gloomy yet whimsical and fun making it very weird and contradictory at many points. I loved Disco 2000 and Bar Italia. Feeling Called Love is incredibly strange yet awesome. Definitely deserves a place on the list and has opened my eyes to more great britpop apart from just Blur and Oasis. Album art is 5 stars. Overall, not my favourite because some of it was a bit too out there making for some challenging listening moments, but it’s so unique and creative. I want to say 2.5 but because I don’t have that option I’m rounding down to 2, however it could easily go up in my books after some more listens
not my style
Horny and heteronormative with a splash of incel. Not really my thing. It does get a bonus stat for being a 90s British album that doesn’t sound exactly like oasis.
Blah and meh. Didn't do anything for me.
Not my fav, it was ok, listened to it twice
weird speaksinging and yelling
Ok but ultimately forgettable Brit pop
Meh.
Not really my style but I didn’t hate it.
Thought I'd enjoy it more, but other than the couple of classic hits it was incredibly dull
wow this is off to a boring start. The middle is pretty mid. and the end just sort of happened. Whatever.
Boring, couldnt get into it
Decently made but nothing here worth committing to memory
Not my thing.
Pulp has an interesting style of music. It almost reminds me of theatre with its dramatic scores but it is enjoyable.
I listened. Don’t remember other than thinking ‘this is just ok’
Alles ziemlich underwhelming. Tjaaaa Metronomy! Anzeige is raus!
Didn’t feel like anything I would’ve missed out on had I not listened
4/10 forgettable brit pop
Found it inoffensive, but it wasn't really my vibe
I can't get into this. Absolutely hated everything about the lyrics to Pencil Skirt and nothing about this album made me excited in any way. Not sure why this made the cut.
You could get pretty much the same thing from an earlier album.
Vibes are rapey
Ughhh... ugh.. aghh... This sucks. But it's infinitely better than the first Pulp album I got, which is a testament to how bad the music they make can actually be. When they do hit upon a good melody, they drag it out for way longer than it deserves. The most recluctant two I've given yet. 😣😣
Ok - not really my thing
Dramatic
The first two songs were alright then it turned into pretty much indie music that I didn't care for.
I want to go higher than a 2 but it's pretty forgettable. Single in a banger though.
I know it’s a classic and I should like it, but something about this sort of music annoys me. The vocals? Not sure. It’s not you it’s me.
There are several songs here I would swear are parodies by Flight of the concords
Very sexual, a lot of themes of the rush of cheating, or being the secret lover to a married woman. Feels very 90's. Overall ok, but not something I want to listen to again. 4/10
To write anything suggesting I enjoyed, so much as tolerated, this record would be a work of Pulp Fiction.
Pulp was not a favorite. Dude sings an awful lot about sex and he looks like that mostly would have occurred alone in his basement if he hadn't become a "rock star".
Dorky.
Pretty good. Sounds loke David Bowie most of the time. 2.5
I liked it some of the songs I didn't like ..
This album isn't bad musically, but I think it's the horniest album I've heard in my life. Favorite track: Common People
Not my cup of Tea at all
I've never really got on with Pulp. While I think most Britpop is alright, this just isn't enjoyable to me. That weird seductive whispery voice that Cocker does gives me chills, and not in a good way. It really doesn't strike me as a 90s album either - the cheesy sex-driven lyrics seem 10 years older than they actually are. The music and the instrumentation itself was good, but the vocals were just creepy. No wonder Britpop gets such a bad name outside of the UK. Favourite: Common People
Mis-Shapes: 3/5. It's alright, nothing to note. Pencil Skirt: 1/5. You're horny, we get it. Common People: 2/5. Good message but the plot and music are lacking! I Spy: 3/5. Mediocre, but it's picking up good rhythm. Disco 2000: 2/5. I don't know, I'm just not vibing with this one. Live Bed Show: 3/5. Good plot. Something Changed: 2/5. I'm yawning, but good for you & your love story. Sorted For E's & Wizz: 2/5. Uh-huh. Underwear: 1/5. Weirdo. Monday Morning: 4/5. Truly captures what Mondays feel like. Good pace. Bar Italia: 2/5. Uh-huh.
2/5
2.5/5
Uhhhh Brit pop is not for me I guess
Listening to this with cruddy headphones on the bus so it sounds a little more lo fi than it probably should. Two songs in and it sounds like pavement had a baby w itith orange juice. Common people feels like it's meant to be an anthem. Never heard it before though. I spy... "Have you heard of this nine inch nails band? Let's try that but less of a bummer"
Hmmm well I appreciate the subversion
very 90's. reminds me of Ric's at 3am. Lyrics were pretty creepy in a few songs.
Sounds 20 years older than it is. So mixed between genres. Too stuck in the 70s and 80s for my liking.
When he's singing at a higher register he sounds like Bowie or Elvis Costello and I start to get hooked...but then he puts out that smarmy creeper affect (I Spy is particularly uncomfortable) and it just kills an otherwise listenable (though mostly forgettable) album. Sounds good enough...but other than Common People there's just nothing hooky or compelling or interesting here to bring me back for future listens. Best tracks: Common People Sorted for E's & Wizz Monday Morning
2. Okay but not my thing. Would not listen again.
Seems like a record that was important at the time but is far too sleazy and melodramatic for me today.
Whiny post new wave bullshit
Not a huge fan. Very repetitive.
Wasn’t real big on this.
generic
Got more and more disinterested as the album went on
Pleasant but unremarkable to me. Honestly that's how I feel about almost all britpop. It's so... inoffensive. Wish it had some more bite. The lyricism has some solid highlights though.
Track One kinda sucks
Never heard of this group before. I found them utterly dull, bland, and unremarkable. The singer's voice was monotone and without much emotion. Did not enjoy this album at all.
Not a fan. Just not my bag really. To much like Smyiths/Morrissey. Also not my bag.
Listened to 1.5 songs. Couldn’t do it.
This album was not very good, I only made it through about 7 songs. Common People feels like it could kick ass live, but it was a little horny (but not in a good way) for my taste and I didn’t love the mix. It didn’t quite have _it_ to really be a class anthem that I want. Overall, meh. Not the worst I’ve ever heard but I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen. Best Song: Disco 2000 Worst Song: Pencil Skirt
read a while about britPop because songs are quite boring https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Britpop
Was ok at the time, but sounds really dated now, particularly lyrically.
mediocre brit pop rock.
Common People was a decent song but overall I found this album lame.
Best Song: Sorted for E's and Wizz. Nothing more to say than that I really just enjoyed the melody of the chorus. Worst Song: F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. What is it with every disco-rock male artist from the 80s that requires them to produce at least one song that makes them sound like a serial killer. Every one of them is at least 1% Buffalo Bill. Who thought this husky whispering was the sexy vibe of the decade? Overall: More Brit male mediocrity. Nothing particularly exciting here, nothing weird, nothing musically interesting. Much ado about nothing.
90’er britpop, blanding af new wave, pop, rock
meh
Listened Before? N Annnd even MORE britpop. I cant roll my eyes any more than I already am. Apparently the person who compiled this list is a gen-x British guy. Its the only excuse I can think of for all the late-70's thru early 90's brit stuff. Anyway, this album sounds like all the rest of them. The title track was okay. Other than that, a solid MEH. Added to Library? N Songs added to Playlist: Different Class
Common People is a jam... Nothing wrong with this album. Just okay-ish.
I have complex feelings on this album. Some songs I hated, like Pencil Skirt (kinda misogynistic/not respecting consent, am I right?) or found depressing, like Live Bed Show (maybe that’s the vibe they were going for with that one?) but other songs I liked. Those include Mis-Shapes, Common People, and Disco 2000. A complicated 2.5
Songs were pretty creepy and rapey
I didn't really want to like this album as I was kinda anti-Britpop in my teens, but it was actually pretty good. I doubt I'll ever listen to it again but it was nice to realise that my teenage prejudices were unfounded.
Mixed bag. Some good tunes and some weird
Meh. I didn't like it a first although it did grow on me a little.
Decent
A high 2. But I wouldn’t listen again.
“Still obviously a product of its time, a snapshot of mid-'90s life in the UK.”
TIL that Pulp and Oasis are two different bands.
Not my thing. If I’m looking for Brit pop, I prefer Radiohead, maybe an occasional Blur.
Interesting group…. Was ok
I liked bits of Disco 2000 but everything else was more British rock I don’t think should be on this list.
Throw away Brit Pop
Not really my thing. The lyrics sounded like they could have been from Flight of the Conchords
Can you imagine how crappy it must feel to have a song that was covered by William Shatner and have that cover be like 900x better than your original?
I tend to believe that the late 1980s phase was a transition period of music and most of the music that comes out of it is a slog. But by the time you get to the 90s there's a rebirth of exceptional music similar to the late 60s and 70's with layers of emotion and sounds. Whereas most of the artists emerging in the mid and late 80's were aware the just needed to embrace the suck, there were artists that were influenced by this 80's suck, stacked with nylon synth and syrup-y self-indulgent love ballads. Every Pulp album I've listened to leads me to believe that they were one of those bands and this album 'Different Class' indicates they are trying to revive the dregs of the 80's. Clearly, everyone has moved on except for Pulp, clearly, they are a different class.
