Just an ok listen for me. Lots of Bowie in this vocalist. I feel like this is a "you had to be there" album.

Ok but ultimately forgettable Brit pop
This one took a bit to grow on me, but once I got into it, I started really enjoying it. Live Bed Show came out of nowhere and hit me like a brick, and others I particularly enjoyed were Common People, Something Changed, Sorted for E’s and Wizz, and Bar Italia. With a little research I also found out that the lead singer Jarvis Cocker (awesome name) played the lead singer of the Weird Sisters, the band that appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire movie, which is pretty neat.

I already know and like Common People, interesting to hear the rest of the album. I fuck with it tbh, fun songwriting and great sound. Paints a really vivid picture of a moment in life and time. I can see everything happening like a movie when I listen to these songs.
First time listening to this album, having been about 20 when it first came out. Its okay wouldnt' go back to it in a hurry.
Did not like it at first, but it grew on me towards the end.
"Common People" has been a favourite of mine for years, but I never listened to the rest of the album, and I liked the overall vibe it had. I'm happy that "Different Class" isn't one of those albums with one or two great songs alongside boring or otherwise unremarkable songs, the rest of the album is genuinely good.

Like the vibe overall. There's some 60s-70s feelings in this music. I liked Disco 2000 a lot. Obvious why it's the most popular song on the album in Spotify. Also a big fan of Sorted for E's & Wizz. Not a giant fan of Underwear - I know it's the 90s, but come on. Monday Morning and Bar Italia were pretty good. Overall, 3.5 to 4/5 for me.

leads off with a song that made me think this might be good, but no such luck. ranges from numbers for a musical I'd never want to see to songs that were somehow written with the hope they'd eventually be included in an awful indie movie from 2005. none of the instruments are played with any recognizable emotion, and cocker's voice is better suited to hosting a children's tv show. hard pass

Pretty enjoyable not a big fan of the songwritting its sounds a little basic but the instrumental is very good. I wouldnt be surprise to learn that they were a big inspiration to Black Country, New Roads. This album sounds like them but in a more cheerful tone. Solid Project.
Really liked this one, surprised it came out in the mid 90s, sounds more like the 80s. Really reminded me of Aztec Camera. Really cool album
Just an album full of really enjoyable britpop tunes
Pulp has an interesting style of music. It almost reminds me of theatre with its dramatic scores but it is enjoyable.

I listened. Don’t remember other than thinking ‘this is just ok’
not bad but not great. We've had a bit of british new-wave-y stuff lately and I was maybe a bit burnt out on it? Nonetheless there was some good stuff in here. From a 'cultural context' perspective none of it felt as important as anything Oasis was doing in this same time period. Maybe this was the 'intellectuals' choice but IMHO it didn't hold up over time as well as Oasis did.
Alles ziemlich underwhelming. Der schlechte Gesang nervt die meiste Zeit einfach nur, musikalisch auch überwiegend unkreativ. Ab und an werden die Songs mal interessant, aber imm nur stellenweise. Die Instrumente in "live bed show" haben einen coolen vibe und bei "sorted for e's and Wizz" kommt mal ein cooler Chord-Wechsel. Joa das war's dann aber. Die Dynamik kickt in den meisten Tracks schon. Ist okay. Lyrisch hätte ich bei einem Album mit dem Titel "different class" was anderes erwartet. Spannend ist aber, dass Metronomy in "the look" das synth Riff im Chorus von F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. ganz deutlich geklaut hat. Tjaaaa Metronomy! Anzeige is raus!

Common People war ja eigentlich ganz witzig, wenn man nichts genau hingehört hat, aber die restlichen tracks waren so repetetiv und teilweise Borderline eklig einem ins Ohr gestöhnt, dass ich schnell die Lust daran verloren habe.
1,5/5 Unangenehm Fühlt sich an als ob ein ekliger Typ dir seine Machtfantasien ins Ohr flüstert und es geil findet. Musikalisch mid Bäh

After the first half of the album, I wasn’t sure if this one was going to be for me. Even though I was a fan of Jarvis Cocker’s voice, the music and melodies weren’t grasping me enough. Hits like Common People and Disco 2000 are obviously great tracks but some of the other cuts on the first half just weren’t doing it for me. Some great tracks on Side B such as the catchy “Sorted for E’s & Wizz” and the build up and eventual climax on “F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.” made the slowish start of the record for me worth it. I still didn’t love this album as much as many britpop and UK indie fans do as many think it’s one of the best ever. Still a very good album that is definitely worth a listen if you haven’t already. RATING: 7.5/10

Then suddenly Nick cave. Some great lyrics that made me want to go back and listen more closely. Only reason not 4 is cos I’m feeling too music slutty giving them out too freely. Probably coz I’m 🗿
heard before: oh yeah The only people who like this album more than me are the drunk geezers I used to play this album for in the pub. Jarvis Cocker has one of the silliest names in music, and Pulp is one of the most slept-on band names imho. Musically, there's nothing really revolutionary happening in this album, but you can't deny that it's filled with bangers from top to bottom. I do sometimes get a bit bored after the Common People - Live Bed Show run, but this time around I've decided that it's just because those four songs are so good, I want to go back and listen to them again. All around solid album. fave song: I Spy honorable mention: Disco 2000, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E
Heard before: yes I wish it weren't such a normo take, but Common People is one of the best songs ever written, despite the over-exposure and mediocre covers; I mean, he even says "whilst" in the middle. What needs to be acknowledged is that, toes to tits, this is also the best Britpop album. Hilarious, deadly, cocky, smarmy; there's a moment in every song that's a gem. "I've kissed your mother twice, and now I'm working on your dad." Ahahaha! Oh Jarv! This record wants to fuck you and kill you at the same time, if it can be bothered to do either. One of my favourite albums as a teenager and it still is.
Only listened to this album for the first time in the last couple of years. It's a brilliant brilliant record. Something Changed is the best track on this.
Opposite to This Is Hardcore which was solid throughout but with no stand outs.. .this has 4 great tunes and then a load of naff nonsense

Common People is one of the best British pop songs of all time and the other singles aren’t too far behind it. Some cracking album tracks too. Possibly the best Britpop album

This was just fine. Not very interesting musically and very British. It shouldn't be on the list but i'm not surprised at this point.
A lot of these Mercury Music winners ending up on this list… I feel like for a lot of them, you had to be there. This one seems to have stood the test of time so I'm giving it a real shot. I kind of like the Bowie-esque vocals. Lyrics on Mis-Shapes hitting pretty good. Honestly kind of a 90's Bowie / Costello type of thing. A bit obnoxious but it works. I Spy sounds a little like a Jermaine Clement doing Bowie for a movie soundtrack... Disco 2000 is really catchy... Kind of love Underwear too. Not sure if this is suppose to be funny or not but I’m giving it a 3.5.

# 53 : British Pop of the nineties. Pretty ordinary for the genre. Still good rhythm and melody with some good tracks and other fillers. 2 1/2 to 3 stars. Disco 2000

I'd never even heard of this band, but I really liked it. Incredibly British. Great voice, dude's almost in my ear a few times. Something about this era of rock is really connecting with me.

Really good 4 first songs, I like the "eat the rich" narrative, esp on "Common People." Like the pro-drug "Sorted for E's and Wizz" The album has some nice closers with "Monday Morning" and "bar Italia" I like how these songs address the monotony of life in the 90's and even now, it goes to show how well this album has aged 4/5

oH mY. carefree, songs that make me long for my party friends. TWO HAPPY ALBUMS IN A ROW. WELL DONE 1001! This is class stuff. Classy. classic. and even has sing along and dancable stuff. old favourites - so yeah a sentimental choice. Summary: 1. Belongs on a list of 1001 - no idea... It's interesting. But how unique or influential, I don't know OK. 2. Do I like it? Yes. One if albums to own. 4-5. yes.
This has been a real eye(or ear)-opener. I have never found Jarvis Cocker’s voice at all enjoyable. Not that I’ve ever heard a lot of it. Until this weekend, I really was only familiar with the song Common People. I’d never heard this, or any other Pulp albums. But I noticed one of the you-tube comments attached to Common People claimed it to be the best song ever written about the working class. So I immediately googled the lyrics & I have to say they’re pretty bloody good. Which led me to look up more lyrics from this album. He’s a good writer. I love Sorted For E’s & Wizz. I’ve played the album so many times now that I’m used to his voice. He’s not Caruso, but it reminds me of other ordinary voices that I do like - Syd Barrett for instance. Of all the so-called 90’s Britpop bands, Pulp sound more like a 60’s British Invasion band than any of the others. Did not think this would happen, but I really like this album, almost against my better judgement.
I was not a huge fan of Britpop. It was often Anglocentric to the point of disappearing up its own backside, and not nearly as good as the cocaine led them to believe. There were, to be fair, some really great singles that came out of it, but the albums often left me unimpressed, especially given the hype they received from the UK music press. This album, however, I really enjoyed at the time, and it holds up pretty well. It's clearly an album about Britain, but is far less celebratory than, say, Oasis or Blur. The deftly drawn vignettes of grimy bedsits, bad drugs and worse sex have a universality to them, and are presented with wit, charm and a dramatic flair. That's the word that I feel summarizes this album best; drama. Jarvis Cocker understands the drama in the songs, and sings with a dynamic range that really heightens the drama of his stories (as opposed to many Britpop singers, who sing with a bored and flat affect that gives me the shits). The arrangements aren't anything to too unusual, but they are well matched to the dynamic range of Cocker's vocals. The avoidance of trendy production techniques means that this album still holds up well 25 years later. The singles are cracking (especially Common People), but there are a bunch of songs that really grew on me over a few listens. 3.5 stars, rounding up. Would buy (at a reasonable price)

HL: "Common People", "Mis-Shapes", "Disco 2000", "Bar Italia" The jubilant, bittersweet energy from the big single "Common People" is evident throughout the whole album. Somehow doubt that "Funeral" by Arcade Fire would have been made without this album. Maybe a 5 down the road. I haven't had a Britpop album that took me there just yet, now I must decide at some point which album tickled me the most: this, "What's the Story Morning Glory" or Blur's self-titled. July 25, 2023
Enjoyed this, but apart from the hits, some of the songs are a bit same-y and over long. I think I would have had to be in my teens/early 20s to truly appreciate Pulp.

Amazingly, I never had this record until a year or two ago. I only knew the hits, which I liked a lot. And until today, I had not listened to the record closely. I like the other songs. Yet I need more time. Ask me in a year if I want to upgrade this measly 4.
With the list so heavily Brit-biased, I can at least get on board with this one. Finest Britpop-era band by a country mile, and a great album that has kept its thrills over the decades. Common People is such a brilliant song, never stops building momentum. Can still recall the fun of hearing this album for the first time at college, interchangeable sleeve photos and all. I Spy, Disco 2000, Live Bed Show; friends all seeming quite into the mild perviness within, heady times. The year 2000 was a long way away! Funnily enough, I'd seen Pulp live a few times several years prior and thought nothing much of them. Caught them once or twice again in this period and they were majestic. Still think His'n'Hers is even better tho'

Was not super thrilled to get a Britpop album on this. But as far as Britpop goes, this seems like one of the better ones. Just fine to listen to.

The lyrics are a bit cringey at times, otherwise an okay album.
Striking the perfect balance between the party’s highs at 10:30 pm and the ominous stumble home at 4 am, Cocker and company explore status and sameness on and around the dancefloor. Jarvis sounds like the sleaziest lounge crooner ever, but as he goes on you get the sense he may be the only friend you’ve got.
Goddammit Britpop, decide if you're gonna be ass and one of the worst genres I've heard or producing some of the best albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to, like this album is. Every song on here is a masterpiece in music, I'm not joking. The singer's voice is a perfect blend of the Bowie voice so many Britpop singers try to emulate and someone like Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy, and the understanding of making a good chord progression is unmatched as an album, with nearly every movement here so satisfying and enjoyable. It may be a little long, but I was never waiting for it to end like most albums, and stuff I actually knew before like Common People are suddenly extremely good even though I didn't think too much beforehand. I'm just utterly impressed by this gorgeous, whitty and frankly awe inspiring album.

Ughhh... ugh.. aghh... This sucks. But it's infinitely better than the first Pulp album I got, which is a testament to how bad the music they make can actually be. When they do hit upon a good melody, they drag it out for way longer than it deserves. The most recluctant two I've given yet. 😣😣

There wasn't a single track on this album that wasn't bland and unimaginative. I'm surprised that these guys didn't die of boredom while playing these songs.
I was never into Pulp, obviously heard some of their stuff on the radio etc, but I was very pleasantly surprised! Such a unique sound, and lyrics to match.

Reading the reviews this album seems solidly split between 5* this was my era my album this was me Brits and utterly befuddled Americans. Well this was era and I fly back to mid 90's from the opening service. Yeh my mates went to St Martin's. Yeh I was sorted out for e's and whizz (standout track) but there's still something about Jarvis that makes me... well, mildly revulsed. More about certain people of the era really. Yeh it's a classic, but it's not my classic.

Definitional Britpop. Has a fairly 80's feel but matures out of it well enough. It's lyrics center around sex, social class, nostalgia, and regret. Standouts are "Common People" and "Disco 2000."
Before today, the only Pulp song I'd heard was "Common People," courtesy of 60 Songs That Explain the 90's. I held off on listening to Different Class because I knew it was on this list, but I was probably only going to hold off until 200 albums into this project, at the latest. Thankfully, it was well the worth the wait to listen to this album, because I absolutely loved it. From the opening words and guitar riff of "Mis-Shapes," to the slower "Bar Italia," I loved every track on this album. I loved that the theme of class struggle managed to permeate the whole album; even the songs where Jarvis Cocker was lusting after some married woman were oozing with disdain for the social hierarchy. The instrumentation on this album was great too; the faster tracks are insanely fun and catchy, and the slower tracks add a tone that prevents the album from feeling tongue-in-cheek. Jarvis's vocals are great too, and he sings his best on "Feeling Called Love." I was thankfully able to listen to this album twice, and the second listen just solidified that I found a new album to add to my regular rotation. "Common People" is my favorite track, but "Disco 2000" is a close second. I may not wait to be assigned another Pulp album before checking out the rest of their discography.

I loved this album: Before listening I only knew two of the songs but what bangers they were. I was sitting there waiting for the tracks with all the other songs placed around them feeling mid at best but then I hit the end of the album. Something must've clicked bc I was loving ever last second of it from there on out. Kind of wish it was longer bc it absolutely slapped.

The first two songs were alright then it turned into pretty much indie music that I didn't care for.
The singer from ImaRobot must have been heavily inspired by the singer of Pulp.

To write anything suggesting I enjoyed, so much as tolerated, this record would be a work of Pulp Fiction.
Sometimes it lags, particularly in the second half, but it's top tier britpop because of its incredibly glam sound and Jarvis Cocker's unique persona.
Apart from "Common People" the album is pretty average.

Looked to see how high the score for this is and shouldn't have done, some dinosaur gave it one star and wrote a conceited tome about how it's not the blues, and how it doesn't offer anything positive as a solution to all of the negativity. Who fucking cares?! Maybe there is no hope. When there's no hope, at least we can listen to Different Class, and that's fine with me. Every track is immense. If it's a one star album to you, either you haven't heard it enough, or your stereo wasn't loud enough.

It was fine, I liked the beginning of the album more than the later songs.
It's a really good album with some excellent tracks (Common People, I Spy, Underwear). The production is mostly strong, but errs on the side of too much at times. As much as it is lumped in with the Britpop that was so dominant at the time, this album feels more like T. Rex or 70s era Bowie to me. Close to 5 stars, but there are too many "fillers" in here to detract from the more stellar tracks.
I spent a lot of time in the early 90s out with a friend, attending different Pulp gigs around London, even before they became mega. She had a massive crush on Russell, the violin player. I loved Jarvis Cocker’s style and swagger. The songs are witty and clever and great social commentary, which still resonates today. Some of these songs were part of the Set List even before the album was released so they already felt familiar. Pulp were to the young British disaffected chattering class what Bruce Springsteen was to NJ blue collar workers. Their voice - their call to arms! It oozes brilliance! I still have the old Pulp CDs knocking around and they hold up. And Bar Italia is still a permanent fixture in Soho. This album is pre-Jarvis’s fantastic ‘mooning Michael Jackson at the Brits’ moment but I knew he was cool way before then. Most definitely in a different class!
I don’t think I ever knew Pulp, but they sound so familiar and I enjoyed this album thoroughly.
I wish I had more time with this one. I enjoyed everything about it, from the classist affectation and the ponderings on love and relationships to the angular musicality and bouncy melodies. I missed so many of the details, this being the first (and only) listen, but something tells me the deeper I dig the more I'll like it, so this gets the 4 with authority. I know nothing about this band, though "Common People" sounded familiar, so I guess I'd heard that before. Thumbs up.
I definitely enjoyed this more this time around than when it was brand new. This was hyped as one of the best Britpop albums, but it sounded and felt like something out of the '80s to me, which was a turn off at the time. I still don't love that aspect of it now, but Jarvis is an interesting singer and songwriter. I could see this returning to this to dive in deeper at some point.
A Lesson on the Impact of Time and Place on One's Daily Album It's been a week and it's only Tuesday. I was driving home from another day sitting in the hospital all day with my ailing, elderly mother who needs to learn how to walk again. I hit play on Pulp and felt transported back to those halcyon mid 90s days that I didn't realize were a real dream at the time. I love his sultry, English voice. Common People was a funny journey and I let myself fantasize about seeing this band in the mid 90s in Philly with Jen at the Trocadero. Afterwards we would head to Bar Italia. I really loved this album. I know nothing about Pulp except I'm going to explore more.
As a whole has a ton of songs that feels very interesting and keep you listening, not one on here is a miss but overall can loose the vibe overall, Bar Italia is a great and amazing closing track though
Had a little bit of a Bowie vibe I thought. A fun little upbeat listen without anything that really made me excited either. 4.5

It's Pulp, what's not to like
Enjoyable, although not quite as enjoyable as 'This Is Hardcore' for me.
Pulp was not a favorite. Dude sings an awful lot about sex and he looks like that mostly would have occurred alone in his basement if he hadn't become a "rock star".

I had a feeling that this was going to be British rock based on the cover. Sounds like music that would be in the background of that one Teen Titans villain who I only remember for the hypnotism and being very British. It's not awful but man is it pretty generic. There are a few songs that stand out above the rest, but overall it isn't really capturing me. Honestly, it's probably closer to a strong 2/5, but for the sake of it not being super off-putting it's a low 3/5 This is why having a 5-star system is a detriment in this regard. Some of my 3s are a lot better than others. Though most people don't use the 10 point system well so I see the merit of the 5 star system.

This is some great britpop. To the extent that it mixes all the good parts of what bands like Oasis and Blur we’re doing with the subtle cockiness the band got known for.

Nineties rebellion, but make it sophisticated. I loved this! For the songs to be as simple and minimalist as they were but still have a lot of spunk - amazing. Before this record the only thing that I knew about Pulp was that they sang Common People, but now I'm about to explore their entire discography. Standouts are Monday Morning, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E, Pencil Skirt, and Sorted for E's & Wizz.
It was fine. Certainly more enjoyable that This is Hardcore, which I hated. Just another so-so, questionable addition to the list but definitely not offensive to the ears.

Being a 6 Music listener, I know some of the tracks on this album all too well. "Sick To Death Of" might be a bit harsh, but I had to fast forward through a couple. I did quite enjoy the tracks I hadn't heard before though. Like it, don't love it 😊

A Brit pop masterpiece up there with the best albums of the 90’s.
Unexpectedly a good album, this was like my old boss’s favorite band and I didn’t expect them to sound this way. It sounds like it came out in 1995 and I mean that in a positive way.
Very nice sounding album. I knew one or two before this listen but this was my first time all the way through. Very good front to back, all great and at sometimes soothing songs that I really enjoyed! The sound was very very different and hard to describe, in you face and then sometimes very soft and to the heart. Love the Album cover too! Nothing too crazy but just really different and retro looking which I like. Whole album sounds way older than it is, giving off similar vibes to The Magnetic Fields and even some Joy Division! Really liked the songs I Spy, Sorted For E’s & Wizz, FEELINGCALLEDLOVE, and of course Common People! But all around I really liked the whole thing and will listen to the full thing again in the future!

I like the poppy sounds. This was another album I was able to put on and let it take me through some work. In fact, it had started over and I didn't notice for a few minutes. I find this kind of music to be fine, but not memorable. 20/20 bananas, 3 stars.
Pulp - Different Class - 1995 Holy shit. I didn’t know that William Shatner’s album “Has Been” was based on a cover from this Pulp album. To be fair, I had never heard of this band until today. I only knew about the Shatner album because Henry Rollins is featured on a track. It is a funny album. I might like it more than this album. It’s not that this isn’t a good album, but more that it just reminds me of the Shatner album and now that is all I want to listen to. Apple Music’s Editors’ Notes include “…”Common People” is probably the greatest U.K. No. 2 single since Strawberry Fields Forever.” The UK in the 90’s must have been insufferably boring. Lots of fun in my headphones! The hard pans were really well done, sparingly but noticeable. Stayed just the right side of 80s goofy to be taken seriously (at least by me). I wish I could conjure up what song "F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E." reminds me of.

I liked this album, they really nailed their choruses and it feels like one of those albums I could sing along with. However, they only talked about sex in this album and that was the theme it stuck with. So that's alright, the lyrics made it interesting enough. There were also some weird vocals they did at the beginning of songs that made it a little hard to decide if it was worth adding since the rest/chunks of the songs were good. So for those reasons it knocks it down from a 5 to a 4. I will likely listen to this again.

Classic 90s reminded me of the Cure and David Bowie
It's giving me Rocky Horror Picture Show vibes. I'd describe it as emo glam. Very theatric. Makes me want to put a cigarette in one of those long holders, sip some absinthe, and lounge around on my velvet furniture.
Common People is the stand out hit for a reason. I enjoyed the album but I'm not sure I'd add it into regular rotation.
I liked some of it, but most of it was too theatrical for my taste. It could have been my mood though.

I've never really got on with Pulp. While I think most Britpop is alright, this just isn't enjoyable to me. That weird seductive whispery voice that Cocker does gives me chills, and not in a good way. It really doesn't strike me as a 90s album either - the cheesy sex-driven lyrics seem 10 years older than they actually are. The music and the instrumentation itself was good, but the vocals were just creepy. No wonder Britpop gets such a bad name outside of the UK. Favourite: Common People

This is one of those 1995 albums I wish I had known about in 1995! I would have really loved this mix of Brit pop and early Indie with some great, catchy tracks. That said, it is not the sort of thing I'm drawn to these days for whatever reason. I liked it, at times liked it a lot, but did not love it. 3.5 rounded down because I don't see myself listening to this one again.

3/5, an incredibly mixed album for me. I really liked Sorted for E's and Whizz, Something Changed, Bar Italia, and Disco 2000, but the rest of the album wasn't my thing. I don't think I'm a fan of the synth sounds of the era, and the lead singer was WAYYYY too horny for an entirely comfortable listen.

Narrative voice so strong. Still parsing the relationship between the lyrics and the music. Message as a collection of songs is united, curious if an order change would be significant (in terms of listening as an album).
Bloody heck if half of this community didn’t partake in “britpop bashing” this would be one of the top rated albums for sure, it’s fairly unique, there’s not a bad song on here and the sequencing isn’t utterly botched either. And to those who call this creepy well Michael Jackson is a certified nonce (and we all know that Jarvis Cocker didn’t like Michael). And even for artists not in the top rated artists have creepier albums like that french nonce album (I can’t remember it’s name and while I like it violent femme’s debut is as creepy as this all your really gonna get here is a few uh’s. Also while I’m on this album what is it with the britpop hate on this website perfectly great bands like pulp or suede or oasis will get a ton of reviews right at the top moaning about how boring britpop is (have you actually fucking listened to these albums). Yeah I love this shit!!! 5/5 all the way maybe my all time favourite aswell.
Genres: Britpop Formed: 1978 in Sheffield, England. It wasn’t until the release of the 1994 His 'n' Hers album, that they made it big. I wasn’t a Pulp fan back in the day; however, they have grown on me over the years. I enjoy the social commentary present in the song lyrics.

Listening to this with cruddy headphones on the bus so it sounds a little more lo fi than it probably should. Two songs in and it sounds like pavement had a baby w itith orange juice. Common people feels like it's meant to be an anthem. Never heard it before though. I spy... "Have you heard of this nine inch nails band? Let's try that but less of a bummer"
I struggled to process this one. It grew on me a bit after repeated listens. They had moments of NIN, The Cure, Suede - all bands I like - but I couldn't quite get into this. It was all decent to good. Very consistent. But there was something missing for me. Maybe they were just too British. The longer spoken word stuff was really the only thing I can point to that I didn't like, but even that was still tolerable. 6/10 for me.

Genius. Anyone who doesn't like this was not in Britain in the 90s! When the question "Blur or Oasis?" was asked, Pulp was the secret right answer. Every track makes you feel something, whether that is 'kill the rich' or 'Jarvis is a sleaze'. A flawless album, literally couldn't be improved in any way.

A passable update on glam rock for the 90s. The overwrought emotion of Jarvis Cocker's delivery and lyrics gets a little tiresome but most of the songs are pretty good. 3 stars
Classic pop. Funny, sad and uplifting in equal measure. A few of the tracks I didn't know (and let's face it, most of this was played a LOT when it first came out) I wasn't so keen on, but maybe it's the lack of familiarity. I can see what they were trying to do with I-Spy, but it isn't as pithy as, say, Disco 2000. Some amazing slice-of-life observations, and you mostly feel like Jarvis is on your side in all of this. Stands the test of time, even if the nostalgia and yearning brought a little lump to my throat in a couple of places.
I don't think I'm quite ready for a Pulp reappraisal. Yes, it's a great album, but it's also still incredibly over familiar for me. I tried to listen out for anything new. The production has a lot more to offer than I first thought. The focus on Jarvis and the lyrics can lead you to oversee some interesting twists and turns in the music. Pencil Skirt in particular was pretty trippy for the music alone. It gets a little deep with I Spy. I thought 4 stars initially. But Sorted for E's made me smile and tipped me towards 5 stars.

This album is full of social commentary with a specific concentration on class differences in the UK. The music itself is dark, brooding, and often symphonic with a strong sense of melody. It was realized during the apex of Britpop and as such shows some of its hallmarks with its distinctly British outlook and sound. However, there is quite a strong new wave/post-punk influence here, and its more experimental moments shift the record into what would we better labeled as art pop. I liked this album a lot and need to give it another listen to gather my full thoughts.

I was introduced to "Common People" by William Shatner, which then led me to the original version by Pulp. The song is an all-time favorite in both versions. It's absolutely brilliant in so many ways. The more I listened to this album today, the more I loved it. It has such great storytelling with such a great sound. Such images and emotions!
This album grabbed me from the start, but then kind started letting me down as it progressed. So, I didn't love it throughout, but it was good overall.
Am I the only one that's confused by the fact that there is Pulp but then there is also Blur? Those are pretty much the same word, right? I love Common People (Shatner's cover with Joe Jackson is one of my favorite things on earth) and I got excited about I Spy and Disco 2000 the first time through. But then I was kind of bored by the rest of the album and, listening again, even Spy and Disco'd lost some of their luster.
In the late 1990s I discovered the songs “Common People” and “Disco 2000” and loved them. Fantastic songs that I put on many a mix tape. Fast-forward to today, and this album appears and I suddenly realize that somehow I never explored Pulp’s music any further. Absolutely wonderful. So much other goodness here! “I Spy” “Live Bed Show” “Something Changed” “F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.” “Underwear” were some new favorites but I loved the whole album.

Sounds 20 years older than it is. So mixed between genres. Too stuck in the 70s and 80s for my liking.
These disaffected youths grew up to be disaffected middle agers.
When he's singing at a higher register he sounds like Bowie or Elvis Costello and I start to get hooked...but then he puts out that smarmy creeper affect (I Spy is particularly uncomfortable) and it just kills an otherwise listenable (though mostly forgettable) album. Sounds good enough...but other than Common People there's just nothing hooky or compelling or interesting here to bring me back for future listens. I think "Sorted for Es and Whizz" was the first cassette single I bought. I remember listening to it with my Dad at the Barnstaple tip. I don't think either of us really understood what it was about, but I do now! I'm not sure time has been kind to this album as a whole. Lyrically it's great, but the music sucks.
Liked this one a lot few years ago, but somewhat disappointing to hear it again. So how should this be rated....

Good but a bit slow sometimes
Because Cocker remains a public image, one can't but wonder what he'd make of this album today. For what it is, and when it was, it is what theorists would describe as social observation. And for that, it is very good. The recurrence of key themes – lust, longing, betrayal – does make one wonder about the lives of others (the singer/songwriter other). In the UK, the working class narrative is under constant threat from the imperative to social advancement – an aspiration that sort of elides the uncomfortable that that this kind of hierarchy is relative, rather than absolute. If we could all become middle class, then we'd be living in a class-inflected Ponzi scheme. As it is, Cocker's biography strongly suggests that he has leapfrogged (by way of talent, and positioning, aided by that impenetrable variable which is public taste) to a point that (thanks to the surrounding eco-system, not by way of conscious intent on his part) would frame him something close to a class traitor. This is rubbish, of course. But this album does seem firmly bedded in a tribal understanding of social interaction. I ramble. This is still worth listening to, even if the Brit Pop context and the social critique are somewhat worn now...

I found myself enjoying this more than I thought I would. But, their version of Common People pales in comparison to the brilliance that is the William Shatner / Ben Folds version.
Common People feels like “Honey” on Psychocandy in that one song alone makes it at least a four star album. Really enjoyed variety. Again another album that has some pop while still being guitar heavy which seems to be my sweetspot
