Reviews (page 4 of 13)

Jimi is more than just his greatest hits. Took a couple of tracks to get into his style, and then it was classic Hendrix groove. Loved this one.

One of the greatest to ever pick up a guitar. This album is a mixture of rock, jazz, and blues. It's a fun journey. Listened on vinyl*

Reminds me of steppenwolf and cream

Yes! “Little Wing” under appreciated because ubiquitous! “Wait for Tomorrow” is one of my favorites and the two “castle” songs! Classic!

What an amazing talent and presence

Just a monumental album. Every song is good. It’s melodic and light hearted. Poetic. Love his way of expressing emotion through sonic quality.

I like it more than the last Hendrix album and that album was bangin’.

Wonderful album from start to finish. A fantastic psychedelic rock album from a legend.

Been a fan of Jimi’s for decades, so this is a must-listen.

there are some seriously sweet riffing on this one. i could spin this anytime. in his four years, he released so much great music, which is a blessing. but you can’t help but think of what could’ve come next. this and electric ladyland were phenomenal but i don’t think this would’ve been his peak. rip king

I should own this

Absolutely love this whole album...Hendrix pop is the best pop

One of the greatest and most influential musicians in history - sounds very 60s but simultaneously so ahead of its time

Gold - Not my first Jimi , but first time listening to this album. Every track showcases his immense talent.

My husband loved it!

Great album

Absolutely loved it

The first cd I bought. And still a very good record. So much hits and energy combined.

Bloody awesome. Couldn’t help but dance

WOOOHOOO!!!

I had never actually listened to any Jimi Hendrix albums in their entirety until now, although I have heard lots of his songs. As a guitar player myself, the guitar parts alone in this album is already a lot of unpack, but the couple of songs with experimentations with stereo panning adds so much more.

Amazing guitar tracks, obviously. Jimi was special. Not sure if anyone else agrees but he was like really good at playing the guitar. I've never listened to this album front to back before but am glad I did. Little Wing is absolutely beautiful, lyrically and musically.

Good album

It's Hendrix. Do I really need to say anything else?

Psychedelic, Bluesy, Weird. Hendrix Cool

One word-brilliance.

Literally nothing I can say about this album other than it's completely timeless and a display of sheer brilliance and masterty of a tool. Jimi was something else

Never heard this full album before, only the hits from it on The Ultimate Experience greatest hits. Some of the tracks on here seem kind of random, but the rest are 🔥🔥

Sensational. Intensely psychedelic, Hendrix was channelling the true nature of the mind for sure

What a great album. Jimmy slays. Listened 3x and some 👍s.

Not his best but still a classic.

Fantastic album! I knew Jimi was good but mostly only heard the radio hits. This is getting added to the rotation!

you got me floatin, castles made of sand every song rocks “there’s only one thing i need to really get me there, is to hear you laugh without a care”

Perfect album

Classic

What a great album by a great artist. The music we could have had if he had lived-

This one is a classic, already in my library. A favorite

Glorious

Exceptional, an album of a generation where guitar was first sand foremost and was a pioneer of fuzz and all things different. Fuck yeah Jimi.

One of the joys of this experiment has been rediscovering how much I love Jimi and his band. This second album didn't strike me as being as consistent as his first one, but the highs are higher. It's also a lot of fun. Once again on this album, I'm struck by the fact that for a guy who is famous for his guitar skills, he hardly ever solos. All of the best guitar work here is in his rhythm playing, which is consistently inspiring and creative. This album is also a real showcase for Mitch Mitchell on drums. What a great jazzy feel he had. Love it. Side two isn't quite as brilliant as side one, but the less-than-amazing songs don't overstay their welcome. More of a 4.5 than a true 5, but I'll round up because Jimi.

One of my all-time faves. Little Wing is everything.

GUITAR ASIASIDIW GUITAR SHSHSSHSUDUSU GUITAR GSIASHAUSSUHSHSSHSHSHSHSHHS GUITAR DUDUUDDUDUSDNS THEN BOLD AS LOVE

It's Jimi Hendrix of course five stars. Exceptional guitar player and a great psychedelic experience

Perfection. I’m going right back to track one right now and listening to it again. These songs could be 2-3 times as long and the world would be a better place.

1. Weird opened about UFOs and then junk does this crazy shit with his guitar that sounds like a plane 2. Solid work from everyone here 3. Classic track - great groove and the riff is money 4. Man the melody on this riff is majestic. The bass is butter and the percussion is perfect 5. Fire 🔥🔥🔥 6. Little Wing is an all timer 7. Man this is ignorant af 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 8. No misses so far. Shit got me floating 9. Classic Hendrix 10. Ooooo Noel do your thang playboy. The Hendrix bridge on this is nuts 11. Man these arpeggios are hitttttiiing 12. Impeccable groove. Is this the greatest rock trio of all time? 13. Fantastic closer This album is no misses. I can only imagine what people were thinking when this came out in 67. It’s madness 10/10 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾

being on psychedelics in the 60s and hearing this would have been crazyy

this is gonna be long and rambly bc i typed this up in a fervor at 2am. also this was my first time listening to jimi hendrix. will be checking out more albums :) theres minimal lyrical analysis/overall song content review bc my wannabe music producer brain turned on and only zeroed in on every production technique and sonic element on this album. also bc i know nothing abt how music production works w/o digital shit so the fact they used analogue and tape to make this is crazy to me u can really hear the beginnings of a lot of guitar techniques + recording techniques that would change how guitar arrangements were recorded. origin of a certain sound that many modern plugins and vst in music production try to replicate shoutout to the mixing engineer, the master and whoever did the arrangements for this album bc its fucking crazy. Shout Out to: Chas Chandler, Eddie Kramer, George Chkiantz 🫡🫡🫡 if 6 was 9 gave me asmr head tingles. this is an album u can listen for 1000 hrs and find something new to analyze from harmony arrangement recording etc. i rated green day too high srry it shouldve been a 3/5 this is like a 6/5 for me rlly liked it. Faves: up from the skies, castles made of sand, spanish castle magic, one rainy wish, bold as love

Old is gold.

Wow. That's all guitar?!? Incredible.

Listen to this one with headphones!!! It made the experience much better. This is some slutttty rock and roll baby!

Glorious sounds

Amazing!

Demands attention

It’s five stars for Little Wing alone. I’ve always been surprised that this is considered the weakest of the Experience albums. Maybe it’s just that I listened to Are You Experienced as the ungodly mix of the British and American albums that is the CD release before listening to either version as they were originally released. Are You Experienced probably had the biggest impact of Hendrix’s albums, Electric Ladyland probably has the best songs, and that leaves Axis: Bold as Love by the wayside a bit. What I do think Axis has going for it though is that it’s probably Jimi Hendrix’s most perfect piece of art. It’s a natural progression from the heavy psychedelia of the first album, features a good mix of heavy rock riffs early funk rock and delicate, lyrical rhythm playing. It’s also probably Hendrix’s best written album, the lyrics are fun and often funny, but also sweet, touching and occasionally heartbreaking (I’m looking at you, Castles Made of Sand)

Great album for guitarists

Despite Are You Experienced being considered more ground-breaking for its time and Electric Ladyland taking on a more experimental approach and greatly succeeding, I feel like Axis still manages to stand out on its own as being the band’s most accessible album while still holding Hendrix’s expert songwriting and guitar-playing within Favourite tracks: Spanish Castle Magic, Ain't No Telling, Little Wing, If 6 Was 9, You Got Me Floatin’, Castles Made of Sand

the best pump up blues, some weird things thrown in

Favourite songs: Spanish Castle Magic, Wait Until Tomorrow, Little Wing, Ain't No Telling, Bold as Love Least favourite songs: Exp (fuck skits) 5/5

jimi hendrix made three masterpieces and then died. I wonder how many perfect albums he had in him

Classic great album

Not as great as the first album, though this one was sent out only 7 months after Hendrix's debut. I had never heard this one and I have to say, I may be a Hendrix fan now. I really like the Noel Redding song as well. Hendrix is an excellent guitar player, but doesn't take the time on this album to show off or stretch any songs longer than they need to be.

A work of art.

The best Hendrix album. Used channels to surround you, and that was pretty alien at the time. No one really gives credit to some amazing drumming on some of the pieces. This was some pretty nuanced music..

There is guitar players and then you have way above Hendrix (and Rory Gallagher) i.m.o.

Hendrix: Good As Fuck

Did not like EXP. The rest of the songs were excellent for coding.

Brilliant

santo cualitativo alucinante respecto al anterior.

Despite Dewey Finn/Ned Scheebly's proclamation on the mind-blowing benefits of Axis: Bold as Love, I highly doubt anyone actually had the time to dive into it. Especially considering that it is sandwiched between two of the most influential and popular albums of the Jimi Hendrix Experience's discography. No wonder it is consistently cast aside and looked at with curious intrigue rather than genuine appreciation, which is what I've got along with all the understanding as to why Axis: Bold as Love is portrayed as it is. Surely the fact it came not long after Are You Experienced? didn't help, neither did losing the master tape to side one in a taxi cab (makes one wonder what the original side would have sounded like) nor the album cover which Jimi was said to have heavily disliked. Regardless of all that, Axis: Bold as Love is a pretty good record. Obviously, the least regarded of the Experience albums yet the least regarded is still amongst the best that the late 60s was offered in regards to psychedelia, blues and rock and roll. If this is what sustaining momentum looked and sounded like after the single greatest demonstration of talent showcased in a music festival at the time, I would hate to see what wasn't.

EXCELENTEEE

Slightly slow to start, but sensational tracks back-to-back after that. It’s legendary for a reason.

This is the first full Jimi Hendrix album I've heard in my life. Incredible! He was truly on another level and immensely talented. Can't wait to hear the rest of his discography.

just amazing. he really is one of the greatest guitarists ever

Amazing album! No bad tracks at all (though some stood out more than others). :) :)

I *hate* joining the general rabble here, but this album is pretty A+. Love that slightly broken up, strat on the neck pickup tone. Every song is (in the best way) just a jam in Em, really easy to just get lost in it all. Shame about she's so fine - really out of place and annoyingly "Englishy" pop style - but otherwise this is a 4-5/5.

Listened Before? N Brilliant! This one shines over a lot of the other 60's rock on the list so far. Hendrix was truly talented and truly unafraid to speak his mind as the front man of the Experience. I LOVED this album. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand

Nice :)

So cool

Rock psicodélico de Hendrix. Vinilo.

he made that guitar TALK good lawd 95/100

Oh this is THE fucking shit

Jimi Hendrix is one of those artists I hoped to get to know better through this project. Although this wasn't the album that came to mind first, I certainly got to experience some great music today. Although I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said, I got to really feel his absolutely distinctive and remarkable guitar work. This in the midst of some really groovy, psychedelic, and soulful songs.

That first track had me VERY concerned. The rest of the album was quite a treat, though!

Wow. Phenomenal. Groovy, psychedelic, and fun.

I like the hit Jimi Hendrix songs I’ve heard before but wasn’t sure about an album filled with songs I haven’t heard before. The first time through I think I had to acclimatize to some of the creative liberties taken in the construction of many of these songs. The second time through I really loved this.

Can't wait for this one. Probably my favourite Jimi Hendrix album, at the very least is has Bold As Love, which has been my favourite Hendrix song for a long time. AND I'm about to fly to Seattle, home of Jimi himself. Good timing. Better than I remembered it. Bold as Love, Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, If 6 Was 9... great album. Gonna be the first 5/5 I think.

Down the street you can hear her scream you're a disgrace As she slams the door in his drunken face And now he stands outside And all the neighbors start to gossip and drool He cries oh girl, you must be mad What happened to the sweet love you and me had Against the door he leans and starts a scene And his tears fall and burn the garden green Absolutely amazing album. Hendrix is a transcendent guitarist, thats a given - But this album goes beyond his skill as a guitarist and shows what a great songwriter and overall musician he was. 5/5

Thick, chunky riffs, swooping solos, and excellent vibes throughout. I can even forgive the goofy skit and weird messy feedback sections - lotta drugs about those days. Superb.

This guy is pretty good. Each new listen gets better and better and better

Classic Jimi. The guitar, the voice, everything about it.

2 Hendrix albums in the same week! Sweet! Like I mentioned in my Electric Ladyland review, everything Hendrix touched was gold. This is the second of two albums released in 1967. This record features some heavy psychedelic sounds, with highlights such as “Little Wing” and “Castles Made of Sand”. Can’t go wrong with this one.

The well known hits (Little Wing, Spanish Castle Magic) are still so good. But some of the lesser known tracks stand up just fine to these tracks also. “She’s So Fine” is jarring at first due to Jimi not singing, but it grew on me after a repeat listen, reminds me of lost Beatles track. The final 3 song stretch of the album is very strong and I just absolutely love “Bold as Love” as a closer.

Very very good album

4.5/5 A timeless classic, nothing else to say.

It is amazing that this album is from 1967. What a sound! The arrangements, the production, Jimi's skills, the songwriting are all so good. A truly psychedelic masterpiece.

I mean, it's great! "Up from the Skies" is just such a nice little funky track, "Spanish Castle Magic" is great, and most of the others are bangers on their own. The guitar of course is the main star here, but Jimi Hendrix's vocals are also quite great!

Wonderful

Little Wing on it's own makes this a 5-star album, and then there are all the other songs. Jimi, Mitch and Noel knew what was up

Truly one of the greatest ever.

perfection.

Huzzah! Our cold streak is over! I don't know how many Hendrix albums we're going to get here. But might be 4 I would give a 5. This is one of them.

Wow, I really loved this, it was riding a 4 and then Castles Made of Sand hit, and it was 5 then on, baby.

Nice one Jimmy

I would be very surprised to see folks not rate this album a perfect 5/5. It's hard to imagine anyone coming along and doing more for guitar than Jimi and I just don't think it will ever happen. This takes me back to learning guitar for the first time and visiting his tombstone many years ago. Fantastic tone, sound, everything. Just an amazing piece of art.

Own on Vinyl

All time great, stands the test of time, amazing riffs throughout the album, psychedelic blues rock fusion at its best, solos, rhythm, it's got it all (97%)

Amazing. The instrumentals were so so good.

this album is a fucking gem

Just brilliant. Never sat down to listen to his albums, just the ones still in common rotation today. This is brilliant all the way through. (prior listen)

Quite a pleasant surprise

A great Jimi Hendrix album. The second one generated by the list generator so far. A timeless classic. Very well known, so not much to add, except that it must be the album with the best closing song ever: Bold As Love.

The album could have done without the first track, and I found the fade out on Little Wing a bit annoying, especially since it is my favourite song, but otherwise this was just great.

Wow. Every track is a classic. Jimi at his greatest, Little Wing, Spanish Castle Magic, Castles made of sand, wait until tomorrow, and the title track Bold as Love. Just great 60s rock.

This is so good I can't believe I haven't properly listened before. Listened to it again straight away. The energy is really good. All the instruments sound fantastic, and have a consistent sound throughout but none of the songs blend together. I listened to it three times and I'll be checking out other Hendrix albums.

It would be misleading to call this album ahead of its time. This album is so integral that the face of rock music would be unrecognizable without it. You can’t be ahead of your time if you bend the times to your whim.

sounds like he is singing through a tin can

That classic Hendrix sound, however I'm surprised how much funk and soul was in the tracks. The image of Hendrix is the screaming guitars, but this album has some serious grooves in it, both heavy and slow.

Jimi Hendrix does not disappoint and this album is no exception. Just really good chill vibes, amazing guitar, and we'll put together song list.

Love this record so much.

This man and his guitar.. ♥️

somehow the best musician ever from seattle. somehow

What if the hippies, cut off all their hair Cracker. What’s not to love here. jimi in generational genius flow.

I absolutely love Jimi Hendrix and how this perfectly complemented his other 2 studio albums...in a 'Holy Hendrix Trinity', if you will. I think Little Wing is one of his best tracks, which I assume is why guitar-god Stevie Ray Vaughan chose to cover. Castles Made of Sand & bunch of other top-notch songs here reminded me how consistently prolific he was and how tragic his early death was for fans (or music at large)...'and the wind...cries...Jimi' (doo doo doo) *sheds single teardrop*.

Yea classic

The only thing keeping this from being a perfect record is the stupid alien bit at the beginning. I mean it was probably cool the first time you heard it, but that's it. Then it starts with Up From The Skies, which I always thought is a very underrated song in the Experience catalogue. It just keeps getting better from there. I've always loved this album and it shows Jimi's versatility as a guitarist. The Experience is in top form as well

Hard rock with a hippie spirit. Bluesy, psychedelic and just impossibly cool. I don't give enough credit to the Jimi Hendrix Experience for being one of the greatest rock bands of all time. They're fantastic. There are some production effects that are a little dated on here -- quick panning from left to right, a rough filter on his voice or guitar -- but I kind of like them. They achieve the effect of snapping me into the present moment and making me listen to the song a little more closely. The production could be cleaner but would the music still have that loose, wild spirit? "Little Wing" is a great psychedelic jam. I also really like “She’s So Fine” - great drumming and cool to have one of the other guys sing lead on one song. And "Bold as Love" is a fantastic bluesy closer. Honestly, I’ve listened to this a few times over the weekend and keep finding songs I love. Great album.

My preferred jimi

My favorite Hendrix album

Radio EXP comin' at you in 2023! Just as magical as when I first discovered this record in the 80s. An album to make life worth living that never gets old. 5/5

Fantastisch album.

Ironically this is one of my top 5 favourite albums, so much for broadening my horizons! Total work of genius.

Best of the Hendrix studio albums in my opinion. A solid 5 star record.

Rock, Jazz, Blues, Ballads, psychodelia, a brilliant usage of chord progressions, rifts and secondary elements such as synthetizers to picture an alien or out of body experience.

Lowkey might be my favorite Jimi album? Virtuosic but fragile, Jimi delivers here some of his most memorable licks.

Just allround a showcase of Jimi's brilliance on the guitar. It definitely falls in the category you can give any 3 musicians the same gear and everything but it will never sound like it does when Jimi plays it (even though some people have gotten dangerously close)

Bold as love is my favorite Hendrix song. I cannot believe he can play that song and sing at the same time. Fantastic album from front to back.

Struggled with what to rate this. Was going to go with 4, but listened to it again and can't really find anything wrong with it. Solid album. 4.5 and I'll round up.

I'm guessing all three Jimi Hendrix albums will be on this 1001 list. Axis: Bold As Love is the first that's come up for me. Amazing what the man did in three short albums. Axis: Bold as Love is highlighted by If 6 Was 9, Spanish Castle Magic and the incomparable Castles Made of Sand, Little Wing (what a guitar riff) and Bold As Love. Those three songs alone earn this album 5 stars from me.

Un de mes albums preferés tout court. 5*

Super album, i have the remastered version on cd

Well, it' s Jimi Hendrix. He was an amazing musician and will always get 5/5 out of me. And this is just the most iconic, era-defining Hendrix album. One amazing song after another. Irreverant, challenging, beautiful lyrics, amazing musicianship, and beautifully and minimally produced. I wouldn't want to listen to it every day, but there's no question that it deserves its place on this list. An important and striking piece of art.

Little Wing is always one of my favorites- this whole album showcases the Hendrix signature. Top tier.

Tremendous, the GOAT

Even 55 years later, his guitar work seems wildly inventive, in a way this album seems ageless, full of fun songs that still amaze.

So good.

Incredible sound and great songs to match. The definitive psychedelic Hendrix album

Crisp production and catchy, tight songs. Castles Made of Sand, Wait Until Tomorrow and Little Wing are almost pop songs.

Don’t think it’s the best Hendrix record, but it’s probably his most overtly psychedelic and damn if it doesn’t have some of his best songs: Spanish Castle Magic Wait Until Tomorrow Little Wing If 6 was 9 Castles Made of Sand Bold As Love Giving this a 5, anyway, with the outro of Bold as Love pushing it over the edge. I believe that its credited as being the first usage of flange on record.

Little wing is a supreme guitar song. Nothing can ever top it for me. It’s just pure bliss. And I love that it’s so short too. I mean SRV elaborates on the subject and it’s great I like it. But Jimi just goes straight to the point and it cuts short before the melody flies away. Perfection. How can I rate an album with Little wing on it anything lower than 5/5? And there’s more to it too: Bold as Love, Spanish Castle Magic, Castles Made of Sand, Wait Until Tomorrow, One Rainy Wish - they’re all beautiful songs. And how about the tone of Jimis guitar on this entire album? then you have the rest of the band which is so easy to overlook but they’re there and they are doing great work to showcase Jimi’s magic. Last but not least - I think with Hendrix it’s so easy to focus solely on the guitar but please take a closer look at the lyrics: Castles Made of sand, Bold as Love and of course Little Wing - Jimi is very underrated as a writer. 5/5 perfect guitar album with the greatest electric guitar tune in rock and roll history.

This album is in my blood.

Great!!!

Sublime beauty infused with raw power.

Guitar genious

The underrated record of Hendrix trio. The most diverse in styles, we get a mix of jazz, R&B, folk, proto-metal, and a whole load of psychedelia. Despite all this, it's a really coherent record, with successive tracks flowing well between each other. It has its hard and rough moments, but for the most part it's a groovy and jamming experience. It's very accessible and never drags on. I looked through for any weak tracks, and really there's something unique and special about each one. Each track gets straight to the point, and it's quickly obvious why each one was included, forming a complete experience. Regarding the nature of the music itself, it's obvious even in this record why Jimi Hendrix is considered one of the greatest musicians of all time. A versatile guitar player with impressive and memorable riffs, simple instrumentation that takes each player to their limits, a passionate and powerful vocalist, hard-hitting and imaginative lyrics, and a crisp production style full of cool tricks that make for a strange and interesting listen, whether sober or not. Favorites: Up From the Skies, Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, If 6 was 9, Bold as Love

Oh wow Ok. thought it would be too jammy and trippy especially after the opening track however really loved this. Wasn't high when listening but could have easily been a 5 if I was. In fact just great headphone music listening to the layers it stands out much more than other Hendrix I've listened to.

Amazing from beginning to end, a jazzy psychedelic experience everyone should appreciate

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Axis: Bold as Love keeps what worked about Are You Experienced? and somehow is even denser, even more psychedelic, even more beautiful.

so so good

Really good

Just incredible music in this album. I think like this even better than Are You Experienced. Favorite track: If 6 was 9

Unbelievable album, a really enjoyable listen. Favourite track: Spanish Castle Magic

Fantastic album. Loved it.

This album could stop wars

Jimi always top notch

I have a small problem with reviewing this album. I can listen to Jimi, but I can't hear him. There's a difference. Just because I'm listening to him, it doesn't mean I'm hearing him. I also cannot jump.

Never listened to it before, now already listened to it three times

All time classic, some of the best guitar playing ever and revolutionary band.

Awesome!

This album is brilliant, first time listening to it, more familiar with Hendrix debut, really enjoyed the experimental tracks. A real 60’s rock masterpiece.

one rainy wish

Love the guitar riffs

Jimi is one of the greatest of all time. But considering they only had three albums, this feels a little lacking in 💥Killer Hits💥. It’s not an issue of the quality of the tracks though, it’s the fact I’ve not listened to this album enough and am not familiar with all of the intricacies. In need to listen to most Hendrix.

Much better than I remember

Only really knew little wing. What's to say, it's hendrix man! Fuckin rules

Really aweomse rock. He dives into some more experimental stuff here which I also enjoy

It's fabulous

The goat 🐐

Cool groovy stuff

Um ótimo álbum! Clássico.

The artistry really goes beyond Hendrix's guitar licks—what stands out to me now is the arrangement of the songs, the way he builds sonic structures out of noise and the basic instrumentation of rock with some surprises here and there of orchestral additions.

He's my dad

classic

banger of destiny

4/13/2022 Today's Album: "Axis: Bold As Love" by Jimi Hendrix - Crisp, warm, soulful, trippy, soulful, groovy, perfect. This record is so beyond reviewing and I think because of that I am just going to spend this time explaining why it's so amazing. From the very start, you have one of the best pieces of noise music I have ever heard in Exp. It is so abrasive and off-putting and I feel like it's the perfect test for the listener, as if it's saying, "There's a ton of cool shit that's coming up, but if this is too much for you, turn back now." The next few tracks are an immaculate display of Hendrix's expert level production, beyond-comparison guitar work, and just overall what he is capable as a single musician. The track Spanish Castle Magic reminds me of much of what I've heard from Electric Ladyland and in the best ways. The track Little Wing is just perfect in so many ways and is truly a standout performance amongst standout performances on this record. It's psychedelic and lovely and just feels like there isn't a single piece out of place. If 6 Was 9 is absolutely stunning, from it's invasive production to the cutting lyrics and vocal performance. This song gets in your face and shows you some of the most insane noise music you've likely ever heard. A clopping sound effect echoes above and just creates this absolutely crushing atmosphere for this noisy, distorted guitar to go berserk over. Castles Made of Sand has one of the sweetest choruses on the record and generally just has a really digestible and cozy vibe to it. There's also some really great sounding guitar work isolated to the left channel every so often and it really spices things up when Hendrix does that. One Rainy Wish has some really cool guitar work with these stuttering riffs and descending arpeggios and generally has this really dreamy, swaying feel to it. The closer of the album and title track, Bold as Love is a really endearing and poetic song with an absolutely killer guitar solo that ends by cranking up a really treble-heavy guitar and just going to town for a minute. It's super distorted and sort of trails off in a really pleasing way sonically to end the record. The whole album is somewhat difficult to listen to at moments with some really overbearing production and frankly horrific noises, but when you give this record the time to show you what's great about it, it really does not disappoint. It feels like one of those album that needs no alterations and is just perfect as it is. If I am not liking a part of it, it feels like it's because my musical palette cannot handle it yet and I just need to give it another try. If you enjoy well produced and densely packed psychedelic music, do yourself a favor and listen to this absolutely amazing classic record. You are bound to have a strong reaction to it one way or another because it just has so many ear-gasmic and/or productionally impressive moments. Bravo. Score: 10/10 Will blow your entire mind. Highlights: Up From The Skies, Spanish Castle Magic, Wait Until Tomorrow, Ain't No Telling, Little Wing, If 6 Was 9, You Got Me Floatin', Castles Made of Sand, One Rainy Wish, Bold As Love

I love this album. Little Wing, Spanish Castle Magic and Bold As Love already make the album worth 5 stars. Favorite tracks: The ones I mentioned.

Plenty of saliva, blood, sex in this album. Musically tight and appealing

4.5/5. Fire 🔥😎🤘

Loved it

Finally got to listen to an album I own on vinyl. Really like this album and it's psychadelic soundscapes. Good stuff!

So, the greatest, most visionary, most talented, most virtuosic, most charismatic musician of the sixies releases a second album. And of course it's wonderful. What did you expect? That Hendrix would make bad songs? In his pomp, he simply didn't have the capacity to offer substandard material. The Noel Redding song is a duffer, but in no way does it, or can it, diminish from the sheer wizardry of Hendrix, The album starts with a radio interview asking if Hendrix descended from a UFO. That's as good an explanation as any. And I have Electric Ladyland to come. What delights will come. I was listening to this on Spotify, and the album was interrupted by an ad for the 20th anniversary of a Travis album. What a fucking pollutant.

Rock psicodélico de Hendrix.

Intro spaziale! Spanish Castle Magic <3 Una chicca dopo l'altra, una bomba direi. Dove ho vissuto fino ad ora?! Little Wing è meravigliosa. Tutto l'album è su questa falsariga: fantastico.

great album, some hit songs on there. finishing on bold as love is superb

This is the album I'd bring if I was stranded on a desert island with an everlasting supply of reefer and Choco Tacos.

Discazo. Rock del sabroso

Non chitarracentrico come mi aspettavo! Godibile dall'inizio alla fine. Da riascoltare!

Classic

Fantastic album, lots of great songs. In the opening track you canhear them struggling with pan effects, is it genuinely disorienting with headphones on. Great lyrics and Hendrix guitar playing.

Awesome

ABSURDAMENTE FODA PERFEITO EM TODOS OS ASPECTOS HENDRIX É UM DEUS

Just an amazing album that showcases all of the band members talents in really tight compositions

Very comfortable and easy to listen to.

terrific album. everything song a classic. Stereo effects are outstanding.

It’s Hendrix so of course it’s a 5-star album. Some great songs on here including ‘Little Wing’ and ‘Bold as Love’. It’s crazy how many innovative guitar techniques Hendrix showcases on this album.

One of the greatest albums ever made. Hendrix's guitar work is phenomenal and still amazes me to this day. So many other musicians cannot come anywhere close to the level of this album.

Incredible production, listening on good headphones reveals so many awesome psychedelic layers to this and it has some of the most famous and best songs of this era of rock.

Amazing

jimi. hendrix.

A complete masterpiece

excelente

Me gustaron mucho “Little Wing”, “Castles Made of Sand” y “Little Miss Lover”.

Yes Jimi!

All in all, a fantastic album. Are You Experienced is the quintessential Hendrix album, but I’ll be dammed if Axis isn’t just as good. Always liked this one when I was younger, and that opinion has not changed.

Menciones especiales al build up de 'if 6 was 9', me resulta emocionante y satisfactorio, y a 'She's so fine', que es una canción rápida y pegajosa. Mood: frito

Not for me. Talented musicians. Just not talented enough to shut the fuck up

mt bom queria em vinil

Stylistically a bit all over the map. Songs range from the sublime “Little Wing” to the fairly stupid “EXP”. Playing of course great because it’s Jimi. Overall slight sophomore slump.

Imagine you know nothing and you look at this album cover... What a great album, I dont know if I heard it properly before.

This hits different Wait Until Tomorrow Little Wing Bold as Love (Can you tell I'm a fan of John Mayer?) Overall really entertaining by the GOAT of guitar 3.9

Hendrix is always a solid choice

Are You Experienced has more hits but this album could be the dictionary definition of psychedelic rock.

Amazing

Nice tunes

Solid stuff

I may be a loony but this feels like a more consistent and consistently interesting album than Are You Experienced. Many bangers Highlights: "Wait Until Tomorrow", "If 6 Was 9", "One Rainy Wish"

Standouts Spanish Castle Magic Little Wing If 6 Was 9 You Got Me Floating Castles Made of Sand One Rainy Wish Bold As Love

Groovy stuff, a real step up from Experienced. A cool unified psychedelic experience for the most part, but She's So Fine (a good song) doesn't belong here. This is an album you feel like you should play on a loop forever.

Little Wing is fabulous, however, beyond that, most of the songs tend to blend together a bit and nothing stood out. The guitar tone is beautiful and the whole ensemble is fantastic but the songs are not the greatest vehicle to show this. I still enjoyed it though.

This isn’t his strongest work but I could listen to ‘little wing’ and ‘castles made of sand’ many times over without getting too bored of them (was surprised at such a short track length for both!). At his best when playing those little intricate runs in between chords and playing the jazzier, more melodic songs to my ear. That said, the songs here that were of lesser quality weren’t too bad either and enjoyed the album nonetheless.

Was prepared to not like this, based on the jazzy sound of the first track, but ended up really liking it. Jumps around in style, but not in a bad way.

Drugi mi je zanimiv, ker mi je to čist zame nova verzija Jimija, taka mal jazzovska ("Up from the Skies"). Kdo poje na "She's So Fine"? Ker to ni Jimi. A, Noel Redding, basist. Fajn album. Druga polovica mi je bla bolj všeč.

I had already listened to this album, although I'm not a huge Hendrix fan (at least, not until now). I think "Spanish Castle Magic", "Castles Made of Sand" and, especially, "Little Wing" (greatest guitar intro ever?) are very good. I also enjoyed "Up From The Skies" (especially the lyrics), "Wait Until Tomorrow", "One Rainy Wish", or "Bold as Love". This is a solid 4 star album for me. Actually, 5 stars are not completely out of the conversation.

It was suprising, I thought that it would be more crazy energetic.

Love you, Jimi. Really underrated in terms of delivering a consistent and beautifully written and performed album.

Jeg kan godt li' Jimi

Not my thing but undeniably whips ass

Most of this review could be filled with what makes Jimi Hendrix rock’s most amazing guitar player, despite this album falling short compared to the other two records released in his lifetime. Are You Experienced? and Electric Ladyland belong to the highest pantheon, so if Axis: Bold As Love does not quite measure up, it is no crime. The songs lack the charge of the best of Hendrix on both of those classics, and the spacier tracks cannot possibly top Side Three of Electric Ladyland, which I consider the greatest stretch of guitar on record. However, one still listens with mouth open to many songs on the album. “Spanish Castle Magic” and “If 6 Was 9” feature slamming power chords, while many songs, such as “Up From the Skies” contain a loose jazzier style of playing. The tender and restrained guitar work of “The Wind Cries Mary” surfaced several times, most famously on “Little Wing”, and the exquisite “Castles Made of Sand.” The title track follows the same path before exploding into some of Hendrix’s best soaring guitar work. Hendrix is unique in that his songs do not fit neatly into hard rock, blues, funk, garage or heavy metal. He foreshadows many of those styles, but he possesses a control and inventiveness that escaped other guitar players. His sonic presentation, some credit has to go to engineer Eddie Kramer, sets him apart. Most importantly, while flashy, Hendrix had an undefinable tone that injected emotion into even the most spacey and power chord tracks. The album filler of “Wait Until Tomorrow”, “Little Miss Lover” and Noel Redding’s “She’s So Fine” are perfectly acceptable 1960s psychedelic pop, but similar songs on Are You Experienced? and Electric Ladyland present better versions of these deep cuts.

A letra é ok, Bateria é ok, Baixo é ok, Guitarra é LENDÁRIA. Dificil avaliar.

I really love this record, what surprised me so much about this was how psyche it was which I mean look at the cover and you would say duh, but my experience with Jimi before this was more in a hard rock context than psyche so it was a pleasant surprise. The album as a whole is very solid but the standout tracks for me little wing and castles made of sand really elevate this to being one of my favorites from the period. Jimi has this great voice to him that is perfect for the style he is playing and the band together just meshes so well which I feel is really evident on she's so fine. Great LP!!! Fav tracks: Spanish castle music, Little wing, Castles made of sand, She's so fine, and bold as love

Opened super strong and remained consistent the whole way through. Standout tracks were Little Wing and If 6 was 9. Despite being next to each other on the album they had totally different vibes. The shifting of the sounds around the listener in Castles Made of Sand was sick

I wish I could give this a 4.5. Thought so much about giving it a 5. The track Bold as Love deserves the 5 starts just by itself. Castles made of sand and if 6 was 9 were also favorites but by a long shot my favorite is Bold as Love.

Axis: Bold As Love is just an incredibly colorful, fully realised psychedelic trip. It feels like such a huge step up in songwriting and studio experimentation from his debut. Some people might say it gets overshadowed by his other big records or that the jams get a bit self-indulgent, but I honestly think this is his most melodic and balanced album. The versatility here is just mind-blowing. It swings effortlessly from the heavy, proto-metal riffs of "Spanish Castle Magic" and the funky chaos of "If 6 Was 9" right into the beautiful, soulful vibes of "Little Wing" and "Castles Made of Sand". Sure, some might see the weird "EXP" intro or Noel Redding’s vocal track as a bit of filler, but that barely touches the overall magic. It’s a perfect 40-minute masterclass that shows Hendrix wasn't just a guitar god, but a straight-up visionary artist.

Genre defining album, minimal filler, and at least 3 absolute classics. Pushed from 4 to 4.5 because this album was on my weekly rotation in high school, but rounding down all the same.

I revisited this album months ago and it really hit for me, and this time around it kinda didn't. Hendrix is in his own category...genius visionary and not always the most listenable or tuneful artist. I'll go 3.5 and round up because "Little Wing" is one of the best songs ever, and somehow "If 6 Was 9" is 60 years old and STILL sounds like the future

guitar good

There's not a lot I can add to the discourse on Hendrix. I've listened to this a fair few times over the years and it remains my least fave of his three albums. That's not so say that it's by any means bad, it perhaps lacks some of the stand out moments of his other two and has never grabbed me in the same way, but there remains a lot of quality here.

Agora estamos conversando.

Hendrix voice for some reason is so soothing… And the guitar carries on the soothing sound with it. Amazing!

He was so effortless, how did he do it?! 4.5/5

An album that drives home the point that he wasn't just a great musician, he also had a stellar band. I'm not sure we really need this many Hendrix albums here, but this is great nevertheless.

Coming into this I definitely don't know the music of Jimi Hendrix as much as I should -- just familiar with some of his big songs like Hey Joe and Purple Haze. And after listening to this I can see why he is considered a legend. In high school I went through a Led Zeppelin phase in which I got really into them and bought all of their music on CDs. The thing that made Zeppelin special to me was how Jimmy Page was able to use the guitar as a true vehicle of expression and do it in many different ways. Listening to this, Hendrix was clearly an inspiration. The way that he is able to evoke so many different sounds and express different ideas and emotions is really incredible. Speaking of Zeppelin, I noticed that the lyrics of If 6 was 9 are REALLY similar to Thank You off the Led Zeppelin 2 album that will come a few years later. The other thing that struck me is the diversity of styles Hendrix is able to create seemingly effortlessly. Almost nothing on this album sounds like the Hendrix songs that I usually think of. One Rainy Wish is one such song that I really enjoy. Little Wing is another highlight along with Spanish Castle Magic and Castles Made of Sand. This is easily a high 4 pushing 5, and I'm sure that I will be listening to this more in the future.

The album between the ones which I expected to be my introduction to Jimi, but I can’t complain about this one. So much talent oozing out of every aspect, from the guitar, of course, but also the voice, diverisity of sounds, and lyrics. So well done all-around, so many enjoyable, groovy tracks, great stuff. 1 listen Favorite Tracks: Little Wing, Spanish Castle Magic

After listening: -> What a talented musician and iconic voice. Some of that guitar is so so good. I have my favorites songs but this is solid from top to bottom. Won't likely reach for this album but I'd never complain if somebody had this playing. Bumped this up from 3 to 4 by midday and secured that with one final Friday night run through. Did not expect to enjoy this so much. Track ranking: Bold Wish Wait Sand Spanish Little 6-9 Floatin Telling Fine Wing Skies Exp

This isn't quite peak Jimi for me but still really good

I'm not a big fan of Jimi Hendrix. I hear the enormous talent, but I don't love how music usually. This album really threw me for a loop. It was a really good listen. I really enjoyed the presentation. The songs are short, so the album doesn't feel like a slog to get through. And I enjoyed the studio effects of hard panning Jimi's vocals to one side on a few tracks.

Fuck yeahh

funkyyyy jimi hendrix s wel echt goed

Classic shredding.

This would benefit from being remastered!

Has my favorite 2 Jimi songs on it and really not much weak stuff. 4.5/5

Det va helt ok, men æ blir nok aldri Jimi Hendrix’ største fan.

Funny that I get 2 out of 3 Hendrix albums in this project so close together. Wonder if I’ll get the third one within the next week or so. Strangely, I think I liked the overall vibe of this one more than Are You Experienced

Not Jimi's best album, but still outstanding all around. 4/5.

See Jimi, immediately get excited. Listen to EPX and wonder what people must have thought when they first got the album in 1967. Rock out to the rest. Great album.

a little unkempt but banger alert

Complex but not inaccessible. A fun time.

It was pretty fun I enjoyed it

really good, but 'are you experienced?' is miiiiles better, sorry. luv jimi hendrix tho

Excellent album with some lesser known but still great songs. His guitar work is outstanding of course but his vocals are also very good on this album. It's amazing and very innovative for the time it came out. Interesting to compare to other works from this year, It clearly stands out as unique and brilliant.

4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/the-jimi-hendrix-experience/axis-bold-as-love/ The guitar playing is obviously amazing, but most of the songs themselves are not super interesting to me. Not bad at all, just not as cool as I expected.

Great Songs: Wait Until Tomorrow, Ain't No Telling, Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand Good Songs: EXP, Up from the Skies, If 6 Was 9, YOu Got Me Floatin', She's So Fine, One Rainy Wish, Bold As Love Mid Songs: Spanish Castle Magic, Little Miss Lover Bad Songs:

My first Jimi Hendrix! Clearly made with a lot of love and undeniable talent, Axis was a strong album with bit hits, but also a few songs that dragged. Still- great album overall.

My POP had all the Hendrix vinyl an ex-hippie rocker could buy throughout the 1960s and 1970s as well as many CD versions in the 80s and 90s, but he slowed down as the re-issues and "new discoveries" got more niche. All of that is to say that when I started picking through his record collection for things to try, I had my choice of Jimi albums. The records on the 1001 are the standard — Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love, and Electric Ladyland. And, maybe this is all that we need on a list like this, but my favorite album is still Band of Gypsys. Maybe that name hasn't aged so well, but the infusion of more funk and R&B rhythms Jimi's guitar wails over suits me better. Not that I don't like the jazzy pitter-pat that is Mitchell's tendency. But I used to play that first side of POP's Band of Gypsys record repeatedly — the politically crisp, D-tuned Machine Gun slays. And, what does that say about Axis: Bold as Love? It's my least favorite Hendrix record and that's okay. It's a heap of psychedelic guitar wizardry and songcraft that's both earthy and spacey, with Jimi's casual baritone guiding you on your journey through the album. Little Wing, If 6 Was 9, Castles Made of Sand and more are classics for a reason.

I mean, he's incredible. I'm really surprised it took almost 200 days to get a Hendrix album. This has a few iconic songs, a few I hadn't heard but really love, and a few where it's clear he's just noodling. Love it

It’s Jimi.
