Reviews (page 5 of 13)
Jimi Hendrix yhtyeineen ehti julkaista toisen albuminsa vielä samana vuonna kuin debyyttinsä. Axis: Bold as Love on erittäin onnistunut seuraaja, ja vieläkin psykedeelisempi. Kuitenkaan ihan kaikki biisit eivät ole ikimuistoisia, mutta monta hienoa klassikkoa tältäkin levyltä löytyy. Myös basisti Noel Redding pääsee laulamaan yhden kappaleen.
Essential Hendrix! Such a cool trippy vibe seemingly effortlessly cool even without any really big hits.
Alternations in rhythm and overall song.
Panning is sick Spanish castle magic rocks Every songs fading is kinda lame Better listening to songs individually rather than all through at once
I greatly enjoy this album but I always forget about it until a random thought pops it back into my head. The guitar playing skills are on display and make Hendrix sound amazing.
A pretty good album, a few song were just not my type of sound that's it. Rst of the songs total bangers
Muy bueno!
Hendrix is the GOAT and this album is great. Just knocking it a star because it's not Hendrix's best album and it's a little quirky not perfectly consistent....also like are these songs? Or maybe just guitar noises/jams. Idk. Still loved it. Album art is incredible too
stærkt album lyttede til det første gang da det blev anbefalet af SEb. Synes bare jimi hendrix er en af de kunstnere hvor man ikke kan gå galt i byen.
This shit good as hell. Not sure how to rank albums like this, because there are two albums that have done this sound better than this album, but they're the ones that overlap it in the artist's discography. If I didn't have Experienced or Ladyland to listen to, I would be spinning this shit constantly. Honestly, over the course of this review, I have talked myself into giving it a 4. Finished it and went, that shit good as hell. When I finished Exodus and Paranoid the past two days, I immediately had to relisten to them both. Standout Tracks: Wait Until Tomorrow, Little Wing, whatever the drums are doing in She's So Fine 4
Trippy and fun. Hendrix is a fiend on that guitar and wholly deserves that reputation as one of the greatest. Never been a huge fan of his singing, but he definitely belongs on this list.
Funky upbeat and cool typical classic Hendrix
NOooooooo I just wrote all my notes in the last box and it didn't save
re bacano, parchado el álbum. me gustó pero no me encantó
Awesome album. Gotta listen to more of Jimi Hendrix, didnt realise the impact he had in such a short time
Jimi's sophomore album is arguably his weirdest album of the 3 it has some of these noise interludes and some pretty eclectic songs. In general I would have to say this is probably my least favourite Hendrix album but it's still really good and definitely fits into his discography. 8/10 Favourite: Spanish Castle Magic Least Favourite: If 6 Was 9
I had Pink Floyd the day before yesterday. Both 1967. Both classified as 'Psychadelic Rock' on the 'must pigeonhole everything' chart. Absolute fucking chalk and cheese. No - not chalk and cheese, more like shit and gold. This album is everything the Pink Floyd offering is not. It's a masterpiece of the genre. Of course the guitar speaks for itself. But a word about the drumming. Fabulous. A guy called Mitch Mitchell. Reminded me a little of Keith Moon. That good. Am I so green that I'd never heard of him? Wow. As an album It's not perfect (a couple of tracks I found a little lazy and boring You Got Me Floating. If 6 were 9) But it's pretty damn good.
Standard Hendrix stuff. Loses a star for the opening track
Really thought I wasn’t going to enjoy this much after the first two songs. Pleased to say things improved a lot after that and I ended up having a good time. Hearing this was a rushed release as well lmao nobody was doing it like this guy.
I’ve only recently listened to Jimi Hendrix, starting with his Are You Experienced? album, one that I quite enjoyed. Unfortunately, the panning on Exp was headache-inducing, and I overall prefer Are You Experienced? It’s still a very solid listen, still psychedelic and electrifying. My favorite tracks were Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, and She’s So Fine.
A strong sophomore effort by The Experience. Some really good rhythm and blues numbers. A space song opener. Great playing and engineering by all.
4.75
Solid. Low slung bluesy rock from the master.
Fuck yes Jimi this is so in its own world in the best way possible and has so much versatility to offer with such cool themes and sounds through every song. It’s not exactly my style but some of these songs hit so hard and are truly gas. The ones that I enjoy less are still objectively very well made and the artistic journey is so evident. It is a beautiful thing to listen through.
Raw, exciting, different.
Funky Gives you the same sensations as being on hallucinogenics
I found myself in a bit of a Jimi Hendrix dive these past few days, after only having heard Are You Experienced a couple years ago, and this might be a hot take, but I'm taking Axis: Bold as Love over the debut. Are You Experienced is an achievement and a masterclass in guitar work, with the highlights to back it up. However, I feel like Jimi and the band took their craft and novelty even further with Axis: Bold as Love, making it more concise, structured, and mature. Despite not having the same immediate impact, the tracklist is incredibly consistent, with highs that easily match its predecessor curiously, before listening to the full thing, I recently discovered and have been bumping Little Wing, which is easily one of Jimi's greatest songs. It's one of his shortest tracks, but also arguably the most human moment in his entire discography, as he moves away from the bravado of the debut into something much more fragile. I love the band’s soulful take on psychedelia here and on Castles Made of Sand, but I also dig their exploration of harder rock. The progressions on Spanish Castle Magic almost feel like a precursor to heavy metal. Then there's the title track, which ends the record on a gorgeous climax, with Jimi Hendrix simply giving one of the best guitar solos I've ever heard while I often say this early psychedelic rock/funk has a "ceiling" for me, where the songs can sometimes blend together a little too much, Axis: Bold as Love is an album I see myself returning to often. The tracklist just flows incredibly well, and there's rarely a section where I find myself wandering or getting lost in its psychedelic layers. Considering this record was famously rushed to capitalize on the success of the debut, the fact that it came out arguably better just goes to show the raw talent these men possessed
4/5. This is probably the most overlooked of the three Jimi Hendrix Experience albums. Which is no fault of its own, it’s sandwiched in-between “are you experienced” and “electric ladyland” which are two monumental albums. But this one is still extremely good as well. Some of the best psych rock you could ask for in the ‘60s.
Jimalaya Jim
A master at his craft.
HA what is this intro. Sir! Thrilled for a second Jimi album after he kicked off the project for me. Did I know Jimi existed before across the universe? I hope so. Spanish Castle Magic! Traveling by his dragonfly! WAIT WHAT THE FUCK it’s about a club in DesMoines?! Where he played in high school. Wait wtf is he from Seattle?? How. Did I not know this. Little Wing! If 6 was 9… badass behavior. I wish I understood more to really grasp his impact on guitar. Loved overall. Will never get over how tragically short his career was fuck.
Listened to on my 2.1 channel stereo set up. I was very familiar with Little Wing, one of my fav songs which appears on this album, but I've only ever gave this album a shake one time, years ago. Upon relisten, it really cements what a great piece of work this is. Not to discredit the rhythm section here, especially with Mitch Mitchell on drums, but Jimi's playing and singing really carries this album to soaring heights. Although I didn't find myself attaching to much of the lyrical content, he has such a smooth voice that pairs excellently with his playing, which is just endlessly inventive. Beyond just his knack to rip into licks and solos like second nature, the riffs that carry these tracks are unique and fun, like one of my favorites from this listen "Wait Until Tomorrow". There are some tracks on here that I didn't really grip me, like "She's So Fine" and "Little Miss Lover", but there is an overflowing amount of goodness laid in these tracks, and it's snappy as hell too, most tracks lasting at or just under 3 minutes. Great stuff! Oh yeah, and one of my favorite album covers ever.
Nice
i feel like im in a movie with low stakes but the music makes it more intimadating than it actually is.
some guy on here said slimmy jimi lol
8/10
Este me gustó más que el anterior. Qué álbum. Qué buenos temas, qué bien suena y lo que transmite Jimi. Buenísimo. 8/10
I really like this, it's good some really chill groves and great songwriting. It's a pretty easy going trip into the world of Jimi that is still being replicated today.
Two types of songs- melodic and cacophonic. Listened in the car with goon!
Not really my thing but its hard to deny this is an objectively good album.
Góð, passandi psykadelisk
Three member band of bass, electric guitar and drums. Little Wing and Castles made of Sand stand out. Mitch Mitchell ranked 8 out of 100 best drummers, no doubt. Noel Redding on bass, impressive. Hendrix, well, Hendrix had a style like no other, though I liked Are You Experienced way better. Still remember the day he died, driving around on a Sunday, so high, so sad.
The Little Wing riff may be my favourite guitar riff of all time
second jimi album and he is going up in my vocalist rankings everything i can say feel really redundant, great drums that give a racing track for the supercar that is jimis guitar sound, tape reversed guitar tracks > every other sound the whole album felt like a blink of an eye
classic. growth. experiment. rock.
Nice
gotta love Hendrix’s guitar solos, wish this album included more of those
As I was saying in the review for Electric Ladyland, I am a fan of Hendrix, I am also a guitar player and also born on 27th of November like him. I like this album more than Electric Ladyland. I like that this one is bluesy, groovy, fun and not too long like Electric. Very good songs and great album experience. However, I don't like it as much as Are You Experienced. That one is the best. So this is a 4 for me.
What could he have achieved if he hadn't had to fit all this into 4 short years? Some great songwriting that's surprisingly funky and tender by turns. Before it's time - you can hear how it influenced bands well into the early 70s. Only docked a star for the EXP nonsense. 4*
I like it but not as much as either of his other albums
Just one of the best guitarists ever and one of the best songwriters of his time. Very good. 4/5
Some of psych-rocks first and best right here, and he just didn’t miss. Close to a 5 but not quite, i’d probably give a 5 to electric ladyland though. My standouts are little wing, one rainy wish and bold as love.
Toyed between 4 and a 5. Some great songs but other parts of the album didn't bowl me over
A good listen on the commute. So big hits in terms of Little Wing and Spanish Castle Magic. The rest of the album was good but only for a 4.
With ballad soulful songs like "little wing" to energetic guitar solos in "bold as love" this album has an interesting concept, production ahead of its time and an outstanding vocal performance.
You can never go wrong with a Hendrix Album on your auditory experiences to have before you die and this album does not disappoint on all expected levels. So while this is not the best Hendrix album nor the one I might select it still has much classic Hendrix work like if 6 was 9 and castles made of sand. As with many of the true geniuses you have to wonder did he die leaving everything he had (avoiding the old age tour for money racket) or would there have been so much more Hendrix for all to enjoy? Don't miss this one and listen to the entire collection if you are somehow not familiar with Mr. Jimi Hendrix.
Fantastic album from the master
A lot of great songs
The Experience were always better as a legendary live act than as an album band, but this might have the best hit rate of their short career. Jimi has infused his songwriting with more funk and soul, Mitch Mitchell is let off the leash to power away, and Noel Redding writes a perfect psych pop song for his band mates to groove to. Some of Jimi's most beautiful work is here as well, including "Little Wing", "Castles Made of Sand" and "One Rainy Day". It's not the best picture of Jimi's ferocity but it's the best total picture of his talent he ever put together.
Great album, I think it might actually be better than electric ladyland due its conciseness. Also little wing is a contender for greatest song ever.
Lacks the hits that Jimi is known for but Jimi still melts your face off nonetheless. Bow down 4
Very groovey
Not as many big hits but a cracking selection of tracks on Axis with JH experimenting a bit more with the production. This album is a real grower too.
Best hendrix album probably
Stabilt
Love this album plain and simple
medio psicodélico. Bastante cool. El final de la última canción cine.
Peripherals in Exp go crazy Up From the Skies - Groovy baby Spanish Castle Magic - Guitar, the winds just righttt
Album to get ready to go out on a Friday night to, as well as album to spend a nice Saturday morning to. FUN
Great album, great guitarwork by the legend, sometimes I miss a bit of simple softer melodies on some songs. Overall fantastic. 1. Little Wing 2. Castles Made of Sand 3. Bold as Love
funky balls
Really good album. All 3 of his albums are very good. I think Electric Ladyland is my favorite though.
Peak Hendrix. Really good listen all the way through
Really enjoyed this all the way through since I didn’t know most of it but it was all enjoyable.
I prefer Are You Experienced but this does have some classic songs on it.
The classic rock continues with an early Jimi Hendrix album. This one is more experimental than his others; lots of noise rock and reverb, and he even lets someone else handle the vocals on a song! Little Wing is the only hit on here, if you could call it that, but every song is solid outside of the intro track. Is this album as good as Are You Experienced? Not at all, but it's still good, and you know the guitar is going to be world-class because c'mon, it's fucking Hendrix. 4/5
Discazo, aunque tampoco para un 5, pero casi
Very awesome guy
4/5 damn this shit is crazy
After having visited the castle made of sand that Hendrix was supposedly referring to, it's fitting that I listened to this album. It is groovy, funky with some great melodies and lyrics. Hendrix has got it all. Favourites: Spanish Castle Magic Wait Until Tomorrow If 6 Was 9 Castles Made of Sand
I always thought that Jimi Hendrix might be too hippie or the sound would be too distorted, but I think it’s a really well balanced and implemented distortion. It’s enough to give you that spacey feeling but not so much you can’t even connect to it. All the instrumental elements come together well with some quality soulful vocals. Not really a bad song on here (I’m not counting Exp), maybe some do sound a bit samey but think still good enough on their own, particular songs that did stand out to me were ‘Spanish castle magic’, ‘Little Wing’ and ‘Bold as love’. Overall, I just found the album to be a pretty enjoyable listen and made me want to check out more of Hendrix’s stuff. I feel as though Hendrix’s influence is something of notability and having an album of his on the list is very deserving.
the drums are the best fucking part
Man, it's pretty amazing how full of a sound Jimi was getting back during a time when a lot of psychedelic music was thin and tinny as hell. I normally rail against psychedelic rock, but here it works because of the great production and the general energy he has going here. Also helps the song writing is top notch and Mitch Mitchell's amazing drumming. Entire album of great songs. Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, If 6 Was 9, Castles Made of Sand, Bold as Love, etc. etc. etc. Classic.
The good stuff Best Song: Wings Rating: 8.5/10 Stars: 4
Some absolutely great song here, and a fun and varied album start to finish. Maybe a little over rated to me, but solid none the less.
Jimi, indeed. Wave your freak flag high!
Good…not the best.
Very good once it gets going. Unpolished.
Hendrix was unavoidable for me as a subscriber of multiple guitar magazines in the early 90s - which I must say those magazines were huge in developing my guitar playing. I had a dubbed cassette of Are You Experienced from the public library which I listened to a ton, and which also sort of doubles as a Jimi Greatest Hits album. Never listened to this, but it's great even if it doesn't have the hits of the first album.
Not sure if it's just my imagination, but I feel like people don't really talk about Jimi Hendrix very much these days. I used to listen to him a fair amount in my teen years, but I probably haven't done so for a few decades. He still sounds great...amazing voice, amazing sound. I don't expect a sudden renewed interest in listening to Jimi, but I enjoyed this.
Yup
A part le premier son excellent
d e ju Hendrix föfan
Stop romanticizing people who squander otherworldly talent on drugs!
чувственная качественная музыка с приятным инструменталом, немного не мое, но сомнений нет, что это хорошо.
This was excellent! Groovy and psychedelic. The hard panning was a little obnoxious in headphones, but I’m not docking any stars for that. 8/10 Most Excellent
Goooood grooves! Interesting sounds, I liked the album a whole lot. I like the weird interview thing at the beginning. I’d totally listen to this again I really liked it
I really liked this album. There’s a reason Jimi Hendrix is a classic
Electric Ladyland is the better album, but this is still great
Great guitar skills and music
When radio stations play classic rock, why cant they play actually interesting stuff like this
Bold as Love, Bold as Ever I've always been a big fan of Hendrix, and this wasn't my first time listening to this album, with some of my favourites on this one in particular. The production sounds great, especially considering when it came out. The drums are clean, the band sounds tight, and nothing feels messy. It’s psychedelic, but it never turns into a jam that loses you halfway through. It’s colourful without being chaotic. It’s just a really solid psychedelic rock album. One I’ve gone back to before, and one I’ll keep going back to. That probably says more than anything else. 4.35/5
Axis: Bold As Love (1967) is the second studio album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Last week I reviewed their third album, Electric Ladyland. I’m rating both four out of five stars, but I enjoyed Axis: Bold As Love more as I thought it was more consistent with less extended noodling, but also without the standout five star tracks like ‘All Along the Watchtower’. Apparently they began recording Axis in May 1967, the same month as they released their debut album. They followed up with Electric Ladyland the next year. Jimi was still only 25 at that point and had he not sadly passed away a couple of short years later, these albums would have been considered his early career offerings instead of his legacy. When I think of myself at that age, struggling to cope with the basics of life, it seems meaningless for me to put a star rating on these albums at all, but there you go, that’s what I’ve signed up to. I’d happily listen to this album again and again, and maybe over time the four star will become the five it probably deserves. Side A: 1. EXP - -/5 2. Up From the Skies - 3/5 3. Spanish Castle Magic - 4/5; 4. Wait Until Tomorrow - 3/5 5. Ain’t No Telling - 4/5; 6. Little Wing - 4/5 7. If Six Was Nine - 3/5 Side B: 1. You’ve Got Me Floating - 4/5 2. Castles Made of Sand - 5/5 3. She’s So Fine- 3/5; 4. One Rainy Wish - 4/5; 5. Little Miss Lover - 3/5 6. Bold As Love - 4/5
Tasty nuggets of psychedelia baked to sonic perfection. The shredding is vintage Hendrix, of course, but I was especially knocked out by the drums which are very Keith Moon-like and fit the songs perfectly. The first song, "EXP," was fairly annoying with its in and out, left and right thing but, after that, I loved it. These guys were tight and may have been the best band of the psychedelic era.
Super loose and breezy psych fun. While Hendrix absolutely shreds like always, the star of the show for me has to be Mitch Mitchell on drums on this one. Almost Ringo-like fills, but plays like Ringo with zero inhibitions and inevitably way more talent. A fun dip into some chaotic 60s rock
Interesting!!!
Had to listen to it a second time. Was better for some reason. Jimi was a shredder.
A lungo il mio album preferito tra tutti, ha ancora parte del suo gran fascino <3
4 - One of the greatest of all time and I do adore Jimi and love him as a person (from what I know) almost more than his music. Fav songs: Up From The Skies // Little Wing // Castles Made of Sand // One Rainy Wish
Faves: . Wait Until Tomorrow (love) . Little Wing (love) . If 6 Was 9 . You Got Me Floatin' (love) . Castles Made of Sand (love) . She's So Fine (using different vocals changed everything) . One Rainy Wish . Bold As Love 8/10
Not bad, but not as iconic as "Are You Experienced". Still... Hendricks.
Not his best album but still really good. 8/10
Она трется об моего джимми
Listened to in half in the am. Mimi was a freak. Amazing that he was able to become a pop artist with such a shocking new sound. Amazing he was able to find musicians to keep up. Worst voice and phrasing.
Way trippier than I expected somehow, but still coherent. Had a few skippable tracks, but the album was absolutely made as a whole piece, instead of smashing in a few tracks around the radio singles
It's a little difficult to give this album a fair shake. Are You Experienced, its predecessor, is one of the greatest albums of all time. Axis is by no means bad, but... really, how can you possibly follow that debut? Even if you make something really good, the distinction will seem huge. And this album is actually really good. All of the songs showcase Jimi's talent in different ways, plus there's one written by another of the band's members (and I do love a collaborative effort). Little Wing is somehow beautiful and tragic sounding, yet I wish it were longer each time I hear it. I wasn't as familiar with many of the other tracks, except Bold As Love. What a way to end it, going on an interesting (introspective?) journey of emotions. Really, Jimi, you are the rainbow. I also like that they changed things up a bit from Experienced. It had an alien-contact intro, it had funky moments, it had some deep themes all in it. It still had the bluesy rock sound and guitar-driven feel from the band, but it took them to different places and used them in different ways. While I didn't love them all, each track had a lot to like. Unfortunately, Axis really just isn't as good as AYE to me. As much as I enjoyed this one, it still felt like a step down. I think I need to listen to it again and separate the two better in order to be more objective. As it stands now, I appreciate it for being a really good album even if it's not up to the level of greatness as their debut. Overall: 4.1/5
I often forget how much I appreciate Jimi Hendrix's work. I always refer to Axis: Bold As Love with fondness but over the years I've overlooked how solid of an album it is. Castles Made Of Sand has long been a personal Hendrix favorite, and I've always loved Little Wing and Sand Castle Magic. I expected these would have been singles as they are a couple of the tracks that I've heard outside of the album but was surprised this wasn't the case. The rest of the album features some really pleasant deeper cuts that hold up far better than I remembered. I feel like the other albums get more attention but I think Axis: Bold As Love might be when Jimi was at his peak as it featured a more balanced attack where he was still exploring different areas but not getting too far down experimental hole. The songwriting is tight, clean and effective pretty much from start to finish. I love some of the long-form Jimi Hendrix jams that are missing on this album, but I know they aren't for everyone, and Axis really just brings 40 minutes of solid tracks in a nice package. I've said it before but Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding are slept on as backing musicians. Jimi has always been lauded for his guitar work and gets all the attention but the other 2 are no slouches being carried. Despite some of the shorter track lengths Jimi's signature guitar work is sprinkled throughout the songs. The tone on his guitar is really clean on this one and cuts so nicely when he decides to ramp it up at times. To echo prior reviews, something about Jimi's vocals are so endearing. They have a softness to the melody that almost act as another instrument intertwined with the band. Jimi's vocals really elevate the music which is most clearly evident on She's So Fine featuring Redding on vocals. It's not a bad song on its own merit, but pales compared to the rest of the album due to its lack of Jimi on the mic. He's a gypsy poet and his signature/style has always resonated with me. Even as a known Hendrix fan, I was genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed this listen to Axis: Bold As Love. 3.58 stars
I’m sure this was revolutionary when it came out.
7/10
There's just so much raw talent in these songs. Not only in the guitar playing (which, of course, is amazing), but in the other instruments, the production, the lyrics, the melodies... Everything just complements one another so well. I love the effect of the reversed guitar solos on songs like "Castles Made Of Sand" and the crazy panning and bass lines on "If 6 Was 9" too. Anyways, what a great record! I have to listen to more Hendrix now. Favorites: Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, If 6 Was 9, You Got Me Floatin', One Rainy Wish, Bold As Love
Uneven, probably because they were pumping out jams literally 6 months after their last release, but man, Jimi's playing is inimitable and still sounds so fresh. Probably their weakest release, but still a nice, groovy listen.
This has been one of the hardest albums for me to give a rating the highes in this album in more way than one are the story of this album. The first track is a travesty to music and the second is only a little better, but man Spanish castle magic, wait until tomorrow, little wing, you got me floating, castles made of sand and one rainy wish are ineradicable. You can see what this transition is and that it helps change music, but I still come away feeling its just slightly short of 5 stars.
I hadn't listened to this one before - it's exactly what I thought it would be (in a good way). Loads of creative playing and some trippy studio trickery too. Good fun. None of JH's most recognisable tracks and nothing to surpass them but sounds great nonetheless.
sounds way ahead of its time. Clearly influential record. I hear some Jack Johnson in 'Castles made of sand'
Jimi Hendrix is obviously a GOAT. this album is chocked full of great songs too, if 6 was 9, little wing, castles made of sand, bold as love, spanish castle magic. stellar album all around.
Damn! Jimi Hendrix Rocks! Never really listened to him before, but I get the hype now.
4/5 Expoente de uma era e altamente influente.
3.92 Castles Made Of Sand & Spanish Castle Magic
I mean, it's Jimi. Love.
Produced with a lot of depth to the sound. Definitely enjoyable but somehow didn't knock my socks off like I expected from such a vaunted album.
Jimi my shaylah why tf would they recommend your worst album for the first day (I may be traumatised from trying to learn Little Wing)
While not quite as innovative as some of Hendrix's other material, Axis is a stellar example of boundary-breaking guitar. It's easy to hear the seeds that were planted for so many guitarists and songwriters in the decades to come. Favorite tracks: "Little Wing", "If 6 Was 9", "Castles Made of Sand"
Intriguing second effort from Hendrix. Features him moving more into the psychedelic realm with some of his efforts and embracing a little more funk, but not quite ready to give up the all-out rock that first gave him success. The album has to grow on you, but it's worth the effort.
The intro was a bit pretentious, but after that it’s just lovely psychedelic wavey guitars, fantastic drumming and laid back melodies. Lovely to listen to after a few beers, I imagine. Please, give me another good one tomorrow as a birthday treat… 8.5/10
I've never been the biggest fan of Hendrix' work, but this album is stunning, I really enjoyed it. 'Castles Made Of Glass' and 'Little Wing' are stunning!
EXP - A very brash opening track, immediately captures the listeners attention with very strange voices and heavy distortion and panning. Up From The Skies - Heavy wah-wah emphasized on a funky, grooving beat, early frontrunner for best song? Spanish Castle Magic - A harsh switch from the funk of the previous track, this track blasts you with the hard rock blues one would expect from one of the most iconic guitarists of all time. Wait Until Tomorrow - This track brings the album back to the funk side of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, with an infectious guitar riff and a beat absolutely carried along by Mitch Mitchell's drumming ability. Ain't No Telling - Just before you can settle back into the more relaxed grooves, this quick track hits with pure electricity. Very fun lyrics going along with a snappy instrumental. Little Wing - From the use of the glockenspiel, to Hendrix's singing, this rock ballad manages to both fly by and keep listeners hooked onto every last note. If 6 Was 9 - The final track of Side One, longest track of the album and one of the most iconic tracks from the Jimi Hendrix experience. This powerful, politically charged track is a perfect product of its time with its references to the "hippies" and "white-collared conservatives" of the 60s. In the wake of Hendrix's unfortunate passing in 1970, the line "I'm the one that's gonna have to die when it's time for me to die, So let me live my life the way I want to" is both ominous and freeing, a perfect final line before the brilliant instrumental ending to cap off the first side of the album. You Got Me Floatin' - This track is unfortunately sandwiched between the powerful If 6 Was 9 and the fantastic Castles Made of Sand. As a result, it's possibly one of the more forgotten and skippable tracks of the album. Castles Made of Sand - One of the best songs of the album from a lyrical standpoint, Hendrix takes the audience on a journey through a remarkable and at times dark story with an underlying message about nothing lasting forever, life being just one big castle made of sand that eventually gets washed away. She's So Fine - Possible frontrunner for best guitar solo of the album. Carries an otherwise so-so song in its lyrical writing. One Rainy Wish - Absolute beauty in the form of music. A song that starts slow, soulful and dreamlike before hitting with the exact hard rock contrast that this album has provided alongside it's soft grooves. The song ends up having a surprisingly experimental breakdown during its ending, which benefits the overall dreamlike wonderment presented from the beginning. Little Miss Lover - Another by the numbers Jimi Hendrix Experience track, but one that manages to fit in better than You Got Me Floatin' could. Overall enjoyable, but not one to write much on. Bold as Love - The final track and part title track, it emphasizes all the strengths previously heard in the entire album. Rocking riffs and powerful drums contrasted with slow, methodical spaces to let each note hang and breathe, before a hard switch into a beautiful psychedelic solo sees the album out in a way that mirrors the opening track. Overall thoughts - This album is without a doubt a must listen to and a quick one as well. Listeners will get lost in the masterful grooves and lyrical whimsy of one of the greatest musicians taken from us way too soon. Of course, this album would not be complete without the contributions of Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell who helped fill in instrumentally where Hendrix may not have been able to lyrically, helping complete the album to be the psychedelic wonder it has no doubt been recognized as. Fly high, James.
Un classique
B+
Such a timeless sound, really great listen :)
so much fun!!! i loved it a lot. something like a 4.5. groovy
really liked this
7.5/10 - A really strong psych rock record. He is one of the earliest in the genre and there is a good reason he is still the poster child for it.
It's not my favorite Jimi Hendrix album, but it's still one of the strongest in the genre. 8/10
Sloppy, sweet, varied, unique.
Bra, men bråkete, må være i eget humør for det!
The Monica album of Jimi Hendrix's 1967--'Are You Experienced' is the Rachel, apologies to Courtney Cox--'Axis: Bold as Love,' starts odd but picks up towards the middle. This doesn't have the singles/big hits but it's Hendrix, so it's still good to listen to. Top tracks: "Castles Made of Sand," "Little Wing," "Spanish Castle Magic," "You've Got Me Floating"
--EXP...60s sci-fi intro. we were so optimistic. we were all going to space, man! What happened? --Up from the Skies...funky but a little boring --Spanish Castle Magic...magical --Wait Until Tomorrow...funky and exciting! --Ain't No Telling...eat your heart out, Ginger Baker! Mitch Mitchell is here --Little Wing...don't know he can create something sound so fat but ethereal at the same time. great work --If Six Was Nine...more of a poem on top of a jam than a song. gets annoying by the end --You've Got Me Floating...another solid groove with a fat low end --Castles Made of Sand...preach, Jimi/Ozymandias --She's So Fine...Noel Redding's time to shine. I don't hate it but it doesn't fit. this is very "flower child" optimism while preceding tracks have a little more darkness to them --One Rainy Wish...the arpeggiated guitar pattern sounds like rain. well done --Little Miss Lover...this hits real hard. Almost feels like an 80s/90s east coast rap beat. I imagine this has been sampled --Bold as Love...decent closer. perhaps a little cheesy
Jimi’s second album might not be his best compared to Are You Experienced?, but it’s the tightest of them, jamming 13 songs in under 40 minutes. It feels like he might have pushed himself to that deadline; songs just abruptly fade out with no warning. Or maybe he just had the motor revving, and it was go, go to the next track. Axis flows from psychedelia to rock to blues, often in the same song. He was at peak power now. Favorites: Exp, Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, If 6 was 9
Surprising - seemed much more modern sounding
Psychedelic rock, pop rock, funk rock.
What else can you really say about Jimi Hendrix? He was simply the best to ever touch a guitar, and 𝘈𝘹𝘪𝘴: 𝘉𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘴 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 is another reminder of how effortlessly he could bend sound into something expressive, fluid, and otherworldly. The songs here are warmer and more melodic than you might expect, but the playing remains unreal — full of color, imagination, and emotional precision. Even when the album drifts into its quieter or stranger corners, Hendrix’s presence holds everything together. It may not redefine him, but it absolutely reinforces why he stands alone.

Solid Jimi
Well man he can play
vive jimi hendrix
Still sounds fresh and exciting

Nice, very talented
Fun vibes, good stuff in general.
Solid. I love Little Wing. Hendrix is of course truly exceptional with that guitar. Nothing really rivals that solo in the same way. I did enjoy the album as a whole. Nothing as iconic but very solid all the way through, and the guitar is consistently a standout instrument.
This album is a masterpiece, especially considering it came out in 1967. The writing here is top-notch and the phased drums sound phenomenal and were unheard of at the time. I still believe that this is not Hendrix' best work, Electric Ladyland is even stronger.
Generational talent
Bluesy, yet trippy at the same time. Terrific, eclectic blend of the two. At first I thought Jimi wasn't a good vocalist, but he proved me wrong QUICK. Lyrics are, much like poetry, indifferent yet passionate. What goes crazy is production. Those drums make you wanna run like a rabbit from a wolf, but the wicked guitar effects make you one with the universe at the same time. Although impressive, the music didn't do all that much for me. It's my taste, but it's still a factor. Unfortunately, docking a star. This album was very good, but the quality of the music itself and the legendary legacy of Jimi isn't what impacted me the most; it's the way that it challenges all of your perceptions of music. It makes you reconsider what your tastes are and what the music you listen to says about your place in the universe. Axis: Bold As Love is profound, regardless of whether it tickles your fancy.
not bad)
Intro was so fucking weird that I had to try a different YouTube video for this album to be sure some cunt wasn’t having a piss. Pretty good once it got going. 3.5⭐️
Psychedelic classic for sure. 4.5 stars.
Borderline excellent album, is fucking insane what he can do with a guitar and plus he’s singing at the same time which is just stupid how difficult it is. The sounds for 67 are heavy and tight. Unbelievable how he change music. A little but to stale and repetitive at times. But overall a great record that needs to be relisten
It’s Jimi. Not the best of his albums, but still a great record. 4.5/5
Different in the best way, hard not to move when listening.
Funky, ambitious, close to great but not quite there yet.
Love Jimi and I know this is only his second album but it's got a little bit of a flavour of "can't tell me a damn thing."
I don’t like the panning that was going on in the 60’s but the songwriting and performances more than make up for it!
Great album
It's a pretty good album, with some memorable songs. The instrumentals are well-received and fit the atmosphere. Rate 7/10
Exp - 2.5/5 Up From The Skies - 4/5 Spanish Castle Magic - 5/5 Wait Until Tomorrow - 4/5 Ain't No Telling - 4.5/5 Little Wing - 4/5 If 6 Was 9 - 4/5 You Got Me Floatin' - 4/5 Castles Made of Sand - 4.5/5 She's So Fine - 3.5/5 One Rainy Wish - 4.5/5 Little Miss Lover - 3.5/5 Bold as Love - 3.5/5
i’ve listened to this before
Way more songs on here than I thought I’d recognize! Side note- check out John mayer’s cover of bold as love
A nice sonic journey.
JQ: More avant-garde than I expected. Will definitely revisit more.
Great album but not my favourite Jimi
This album was psychedelic grooviness - fun and chaotic and weird but with moments of quiet reflection thrown in (really enjoyed the softer slower songs). Everything a good trip should be. I like that this album isn’t ALL guitar centric. It seems to be more about the songs and how the guitar fits into them rather than just showing off his incredible skills. And I learned something new. We all know and love Jimi for his electric guitar playing, but had no clue he played the glockenspiel and harpsichord, with a recorder thrown in to boot! There’s really not enough people talking about his recorder skills. All the songs are short so if you aren’t feeling a particular one it’s quickly on to the next but I thought all the songs were well worth the listen.
Jimi Hendrix is a bad muthafuckah. He is one of the best guitarists to ever play and his calm tone against the screaming guitar riffs and intentional drum beats is as cool as the other side of the pillow. Hendrix is one of those unique artists that you can throw on and everyone (age appropriate) will know who it is and enjoy the fact that it’s playing. Doesn’t matter which album you select. All good stuff.
Jimi Hendrix is one of a very elite few that is without argument one of the greatest. There is no such thing as a conversation about THE greatest where he isn't included, period. A few tracks at the very start took me by surprise, but I had complete faith in the man driving this bus and settled in for a ride. I was not disappointed. There is absolute magic on this album. Soulful, jazzy, smooth/rich vocals, just beautifully written songs.
It continues be a lovely journey to go back in time and try to connect the dots for who is a precursor to whom. In this album is the best of the grunge I remember and enjoyed ('Spanish Castle Magic'); the wonderful balance of instruments all doing their part (drum solos that elevate); and above all: what a guitar sound! Some ear worms here to return to.
It’s a good album, not earth shattering though.
Axis: Bold As Love is the Hendrix album showcasing a succinct sound. Are You Experienced has songs that felt a little rough. He also doesn't terrorize the listener with his guitars like he will on the following album Electric Ladyland. This album there's a nice mix of elements from different genres and it's comprised of straight forward songs. These aspects are both a good thing and a bad thing. I consider Electric Ladyland his best studio album (but my favorite is his live album Band of Gypsys), but Electric Ladyland is tedious for me because of it's length and constant display of chaotic egotism in the form of Hendrix's guitar playing. However, this album suffers (if only ever so slightly) for that reason, it's a little bit _too_ concise with Hendrix exercising some restraint and not being able to show off his technical prowess. But some songs are enjoyable standouts when it feels he perfectly hits his stride (the guitars on Spanish Castle Magic, for example, or Little Wing's composition in general). Overall, though, the low points are a little boring and don't feel as engaging as the highs. The highs carry this album to a 4.
Just so good. There's something about Jimi's guitar work that is beyond just guitar sounds. How does he do that?
While the album as a whole doesn't have too many weaknesses other than a subpar intro, the album doesn't really kick into gear until Little Wing, If 6 was 9, and the rest. The strangest takeaway each time I listen to this is that Bold As Love is a John Mayer song to me, not Jimi. I wonder how Jimi would feel about that.
Groovy
Feels somewhere between blues and rock, liked the slower stuff a little more. Little Wing and One Rainy Wish really good
Feel like I'm stuck in a rut of giving everything a 4 lately, but I just can't justify giving Hendrix less than that. A true guitar visionary and innovator and some great things going on here. Little Wing is the "hit" and speaks for itself, but hadn't heard a lot of other songs here. Spanish Castle Magic was my other favorite, just a ripping groove. Mitch Mitchell was a a beast of a drummer and has plenty of room to show off throughout. Very psychedelic in parts and some cool stereo panning effects. Good stuff and wouldn't have expected any less from one of the best to ever do it.
The stereo panning is awesome in Castles Made of Sand. Not sure I've felt that way about a lot of songs before. Guitar is iconic. Little Wing is an all-timer.
Genuinely enjoyed this album!
el mejor guitarrista de la historia
I must confess I didnt love the Electric Ladyland, my only experience with a Jimi Hendrix’s album in full, so I was surprised I actually liked this one!
Rough around the edges in parts, but my god the guitar work here is incredible.
That Jimi Hendrix has great albums shouldn't be a surprise but it was to me. I'd never liked a lot of the big Hendrix songs I'd heard, aside from All Along the Watchtower, so I thought he was a virtuoso guitarist who didn't do it for me. But I loved this album. The songs were really good, not just a showcase for guitar playing. I'll definitely come back to this and I'm glad the project has exposed me to something I never would have discovered on my own
I've listened to this about five times and I really like it. I am not quite sure why as its a bit of mess but it has a vibe that has worked for me today. I'm not quite sure its a 5 - but its a solid 4 and added to my saved list.
Partly unimpeachably incredible, partly weirdly overcome with ennui. Overall, excellent.
Loved this album, so much to unpack with each track and its so clear the influence this album had on music as a whole. Favorites are (castles made of sand, little wing, and Spanish castle magic).
Amazing guitar work and tone. Very psychedelic, too. Pure vibes. Faves: Spanish Castle Magic, Little Wing, You Got Me Floatin', Bold As Love
7/10
funky bass & percussion!
Inte så förtjust i den överdrivna panoreringen men annars är det fett!
The arrangements and the virtuoso level playing on his record are impressive on any day.
could listen to jimi hendrix all day- easy and interesting listen.
5 stars if it weren't for that absolutely obnoxious first track. We get it JH, you can make your guitar sound like traffic.
Listened: walking home and on the way to squash Castles made of sand
Really good but not quite my style
1/1001 When I say I want to experience new music, this album did. It's funky, groovy, almost euphoric. Jimi Hendrix was ahead of his time and is a pioneer of his genre. It almost gives off a Tame Impala vibe to how each song feels. The instrumentations are also great the bass, guitar riffs and the drums. It is a well produced album and a fresh experience for me. 4.2/5
Amazing album, can definitely tell it created a lot of different music influences. Main thing holding this album back from being a 5 is too much noise/too many instances of nonsense
WoOWoo ¡whoes! put this album here, that's a crazy masterpiece, well really no but i like too much this album i think that help too much the sub-genre of pshycodelic to improve
Before listening: Never listened to Jimi Hendrix (this is what’s wrong with my generation) if it’s as psychedelic and chill as the album cover I think I might enjoy it. During Listening: an interesting intro for a first timer but it’s real groovy when you get going. At some points it sounds a bit “noisy” but you can catch a vibe most of the time. Before Listening: 0/13 songs After Listening: 3/13 songs
Ballt
Lyssnar ju dock mycket hellre på Odyssey and Oracle. Lyssnade en gång till. Det är en fyra. Sjukt bra haha
Trea? Fyra? Trea? Fyra! Bold as Love fäller avgörandet.
Really solid psychedelic album, didn’t know any tracks but enjoyed it
I almost turned off this album because the opening skit was a little grating on me. I’m glad I didn’t though. It feels like this album was probably important in the context of the time it was released. It also feels like the band was on a lot of drugs. I was most surprised by how this album also felt a bit romantic and I'm a sucker for that.
This album is cool but due to the type of guitar or the way it was configured (I have no idea how that works) I kept hearing Edgar Winter's Free Ride especially on Wait Until Tomorrow and it distracted me. You Got Me Floatin' sounded like it in reverse. Not a lot that was extremely memorable in isolation but I enjoyed it as a whole. Favorite Songs: One Rainy Wish, Little Wing.
Hendrix is a brilliant guitarist and a very good vocalist and when he hits, it's fire and when he misses he misses big. Only a couple hits on this. I think I like his first album better. Still, just for uniqueness and creativity I have to give this a four.
Ok
this is so phenomenal i love the sound i love the vibes i must listen to more of his music and im shocked i haven’t already. i am also genuinely shocked that it’s from the 60s?!?!
It sounded pretty good I think… I didn’t listen to all but hope to at some point.
One thing Ive never really considered is how rugged and rough Hendrix vocals are in a stark comparrisson to the virtuosity of his guitar playing. But I guess you dont listen to an Experience album for the vocal quality and even Hendrix had his own reservation about his vocal ability. That being said, the way I choose to enjoy this album is as a storybook and the vocals are a naration from song to song. Id also like to reiterate i think the contrast between vocals and guitar work is such a and underrsted element of Jimi Hendrix. Way before it's time.
Nicht schlecht
yesssssss jimi 9,5/10 manu: 8/10
Crazy Jimi did it again!
Undeniable acid/psychedelic rock classic by the master Jimi Hendrix.
Idk how I've never listened to much Jimi Hendrix. I can see why he's regarded as one of the greatest guitarists of all time now! Still though, it's not perfect in my opinion so 4/5
This is #day502 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's my first of three Jimi Hendrix (or The Jimi Hendrix Experience) albums represented on the list. Funky, psychedelic/blues/hard rock, and whatnot by some of the greatest to ever do it. What else is there to add when it's just that good? This is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day503.
He really was before his time
I love the funkiness
Talented, but not necessarily my jam. Bold as Love is fantastic.
Quite nice, although I had to take off the headphones for the first track((
good vibe
It's Hendrix man
The highs are super high, incredible. There’s a lot of so-so filler material though. Notable tracks include Wait Until Tomorrow, Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, One Rainy Wish, Bold As Love.
This album contains at least 3 of the greatest tracks of all time.
Solid
7/10
made in 1967 btw
Well that is quite Jimi Hendrix. The guitars are impressive and the songs are good, you can tell that this influenced lots of people. 4/5
Track 1: Exp - Interesting and very experimental opener, not much to mention beyond that Track 2: Up From The Skies - Groovy sophomore track. Gets the listener in the mood of the album nicely Track 3: Spanish Castle Magic - The slightly drastic change in genre might throw you off at first, but still a nicely executed track. Sick guitar riff near the end Track 4: Wait Until Tomorrow - Wait Until Tomorrow carries through the vibe of the album, also confirming some common themes around the tracks Track 5: Ain't No Telling - Quick and fun track, shortest on the album Track 6: Little Wing - Like the slower tempo, makes it more clear what each instrument is doing, great composition, just feels a little too short for what it has to offer Track 7: If 6 Was 9 - Very impressive entry, just 5 minutes of music in its purest form Track 8: You Got Me Floatin' - Heading back into a more upbeat tempo, en repeating riffs and progression to get really stuck in your head Track 9: Castles Made of Sand - Yet another piece of psych-rock ear candy, great track Track 10: She's So Fine - A track that felt like it was over so soon, but in it's runtime atleast it once again shows off Jimi's musical talent Track 11: One Rainy Wish - There is something cold but also comfortable chill about this song, I like the vibes the verses give, very enjoyable, near the end however it takes a more interestingly unsettling tone Track 12: Little Miss Lover - A pretty punchy and exciting track there isn't much to say Track 13: Bold as Love - A decent closer to this great album. With Bold as Love the Jimi Hendrix experience comes to a close for today, with more of the same we've seen in the other tracks. Great album overall, consistent in quality, If I had to pick a favourite it would be If 6 Was 9. I wouldn't say anything in particular completely blew me away on the spot, but it sounds like returning to the album a couple times could make it a mainstay.
Wonderful guitar, good singing, classic Jimi Hendrix. Up From The Skies started it off nicely, chill and smooth. Spanish Castle Magic had great guitar work. Little Wing was really nice. Castles Made Of Sand was great. The rest of the album was solid. Love Jimi's guitar work, really enjoyed this album. Best song: Castles Made Of Sand
Not my favorite Hendrix album but monumental nonetheless.
Absolute classic! It actually starts a touch slow for me but by the end, I just want it to keep going!
One of my favorites from childhood! A fun re-listen.
Wouldn't go to put it on but overall did enjoy. Did not realize Castles in the Sand is Jimi, amazing song.
159/1001 Jimi Hendrix - Axis: Bold As Love Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ Soulful, bluesy and psychedelic, yeah I really enjoy this, though not an artist I regularly find myself listening to.
Well, this is a classic album, of course, and it feels a bit short, to be honest. I could have listened to a bit more Jimi.
I should probably listen to more Hendrix
3.75
Pretty good, though the last two minutes of If 6 Was 9 got a bit annoying. 4/5
It's not the best Hendrix but it's still pretty great! I enjoy him just getting weird with it! There is some active work to not hear this and think of it as cliche, because this is actually where all those cliches come from. I can't really imagine what it would have been like to hear this at the time, but now, it's nice to go back to some of this work and just enjoy it. The cover is also great! Iconic, love the colors and the style, it's a 4/5.
This album rocks, even if I didn’t get to dig much deeper than that with 1-2 listens through.
Awkward middle child of the Experience’s trilogy of rock classics. Still very very awesome.
I did not expect to like this album because sometime Hendrix is too much guitar squiggle but it was really good!
Electric Ladyland was a big letdown to me, so I came into this hoping this album was a hell of a lot shorter and really showcased Hendrix raw skill across the whole album, instead of just a few select songs like on Electric Ladyland. Anyways, despite really enjoying Jimi Hendrix I do think he's super overrated. This was an enjoyable album, sure, but there wasn't much on here that stood out to me. There's no real huge solos, the singing is fairly average, and the instrumentals on the side of bland. I enjoyed the drumming a lot, though. I do appreciate that this record isn't a ridiculous fucking slog of an album like Electric Ladyland where you have to sit through over an hour of slop to even get to the good songs, although this thing is still backloaded as all fuck. My ears only really started perking up and jamming/grooving along once I got to Castles Made of Sand.
Not as good as Electric Ladyland, but also not as long. I don't have a lot to say about it other than it's thoroughly soulful, very groovy and has some lesser-recognised (undeservedly so) hits on here. Highlights: Little Wing, If Six Was Nine, Castles Made of Sand, Bold as Love
Really cool Rock'n'Roll. Some weird sounds. 4, it is very good.
Great guitar
Brilliant Jimi. I think I'd like a playlist of my Jimi favorites as this album got old from all the Jimi tropes. But still brilliant. 4/5
Have always enjoyed Jimi but never really explored his work, glad this came up.
Good stuff!! Really enjoyed this album but not quite full marks for me. Enjoyed this much more than the other Hendrix album I had. Something about this just popped 4 ⭐️
This was like listening in on a jam sesh...highly enjoyable, even if I didn't know what was going on half the time.
This one feels a little repetitive but I'd lie if I didn't say I've listened to some of this songs more times than I can count
„Axis: Bold As Love“ wurde 1967 größtenteils in den Olympic Studios in London aufgenommen. The Jimi Hendrix Experience war ein US-britisches Trio: Hendrix aus den USA, Noel Redding und Mitch Mitchell aus Großbritannien. Musikalisch bewegt sich das Album im psychedelischen Rock, erweitert um farbige Gitarrenlayer und experimentelle Studiotricks. Zu den bekannten Stücken gehören „Little Wing“, „If 6 Was 9“, „Castles Made of Sand“ und der Titelsong „Bold As Love“. Die Stücke wirken kompakter und differenzierter als auf dem Debüt, ohne an Energie zu verlieren. Für mich zeigt das Album ein ausgewogeneres Zusammenspiel der drei Musiker und eine deutlich verfeinerte klangliche Handschrift. Abschließende Bewertung: Ein vielseitiges und stimmiges Werk, das die Band auf ihrem kreativen Höhepunkt zeigt.
Love the guitar technique of Jimi. Great songs. Fantastic album.
The first album I've been given that I have heard before! It's a great one, I'd say probably just shy of the debut but still shows everything you need to see from Hendrix. One of my favourite songs is "Castles Made of Sand". There's such a vibe on this song, and a huge reason I like Hendrix is his riffs not just the flashier lead stuff. "If 6 was 9" is full of psychedelic weirdness and I'll give props to the drummer too who really lends into this sound and can have flurries of franticness where needed.
It's Jimmi Hendrix. Little Wing is a certified all-time classic. This album has some of his best ballads, but overall not his best work.
Great album. A couple of familiar hits, and some lesser known stuff that were a pleasant surprise.
Lyrically it's all a little silly as writers were in that hippie dippie period, but damn, the playing here is 10-stars! And I loved all the wild stereophonic, Left-Right channel he was exploring with in this record. This is a great listen with a good set of headphones.
It’s amazing how this influenced so much of my favorite music. Honestly still sounds good.
Got some classics and even the less known songs have some astonishing guitar
No es el mejor álbum de Hendrix, pero es bastante disfrutable. Tiene una vibra bastante peculiar y agradable.
A great album with a couple of standout tracks. Does so much to showcase Hendrix’s genius
Loved how the first song made you feel like you were on a spaceship. Glad I was wearing headphones!
Some killer songs and a few that are ok. Nothing bad
Axis is a fantastic and classic record, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's Jimi's masterpiece. Still, this record is packed with some of my all time favorite songs.
It has some of his best work, but also sounds disjointed at times. Favorite song: she's so fine.
exp, up from the skies, little wing, if 6 was 9, castles made of sand, bold as love
This album has huge vibes and perfectly encompasses the spirit of the 60's counterculture. Loud, ambitious and confrontational to the idea of anything mainstream. That being said, I actually feel like based on pure listening enjoyment it feels a bit messy and lacking clear vision. I know that people don't listen to Hendrix for his songwriting but it feels left out on Axis: Bold as Love compared to Are You Experienced? Lyrics singing and song structure definitely take a back seat to guitar shredding on this album. Which is top notch but not quite enough to keep me fully engaged in the whole album.
I knew Hendrix was coming along from the generator eventually and I’ve honestly been a bit wary of this day. Not that I dislike Hendrix; quite the opposite actually. In high school my three favourite artists were Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Jimi Hendrix. They were pretty much all I listened to other than a few other classic rock staples, but since then I’ve become completely burnt out on classic rock and guitar heavy music in particular. Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd have returned to my listening rotation, but I haven’t listened to Jimi Hendrix in roughly 20 years now, so I was worried it wouldn’t hold up. There’s definitely a ton of nostalgia listening to this album again, and fortunately, it mostly holds up in my books. I don’t think I’m ready to bring it back into my regular listening rotation, but it’s still a great album and I enjoyed listening to it again. I don’t think this is my favourite Hendrix album, but some of my favourite Hendrix tracks are on her like Little Wing, If 6 was 9, and Spanish Castle Magic.
Favourite track: Little Wing
7/10 Fantastic guitar but production didnt do it for me Favourite song=Castles made of sand
This was the second time I've got around to listening to this album in full. The last time was a couple of years ago when I was in the middle of the music-making journey. At the time, it wasn't as impressive to me as Are You Experienced? However, now that I've put some distance between the two, I have much more appreciation for what's going on here. This may be a hot take, but really and truly Axis in my mind listens better and makes more sense to me as one hell of a B-side to Are You Experienced? I mean just think about it - Both were released in the same year. Both share similar melodic motifs both in the vocal and the guitar. It just tells me that Jimi was very much in the same-ish headspace, and that makes sense given that they were churned out in the same year. Specifically I felt this way as we crested into the back half of the album - the First half, all the way through to "If 6 was 9." This was driven home for me when I heard One Rainy Wish come on, and I realized it has the same opening sequence as "May This Be Love" but in the exact same starting key and embellishment as "Wind Cries Mary". Whereas the first half felt distinct with a far more percussive use of the guitar, the second half was characterized by a more legato, silky tone, that really is like trademark Psychedelic Hendrix. And for me, the magic of this album is really in its first half. The second half is still good. Lots of masterful instrumentation and all-around fun production work, throughout, but the first half makes the album. I appreciate the vision of the first two tracks - there was a clear evocation and a through line that It felt like Hendrix wanted to make. To UFOs and the Gods of Hindu mythology, like the flying vimanas of the Bhagavad Gita and the Castles in the Sky not directly mentioned but alluded to in the transition from "Up In the Skies" to "Spanish Castle Magic" and ending with "Castles Made of Sand" The whole thesis feels like a question, something to make you question. What exactly? Reality, meaning, purpose, bullshit, y'know. The usual. Regardless, the imagery is cascaded well until its main statement piece: Little Wing. And my god is it a statement. I remember listening to the short documentary thing at the end of the remaster that first time 3 years ago and the producer said something to the tune of: "Yeah I think we'll still be listening to Little Wing well into the 20th century". Yknow just to insinuate its timelessness. And it is. Its easily in my top 25, maybe my honest to god top 10 favorite songs of all time. And it shows why. Such a fun structure. So much room to settle into. The guitar is so stanky. The drums are so in the pocket, and the damn triangle(?) in the background to carry the esoteric mood through. The Phaser on the vocal mid-way through?! Two choruses and a breakdown and fucking out- mic-drop. My wife always says when judging music: "You've got 3-4 minutes of my time. What are you going to show me?" And Little Wing says "bet. here's 2 and half, baby". And capstoned with If 6 was 9. Never been my favorite piece, to be fair, but I do appreciate the composition and structure of it. Peak percussive guitar here. AND Its got one of the more influential opening lines in Rock N Roll history. "If the mountains crumbled to the Sea, there would still be you and me" I first heard that line in "Thank You" from the Zeppelin II. Plant always admitted that he had ripped it from Hendrix and its honestly what made me listen to Axis in the first place. Look out for it in other songs too, because I assure you, it is out there. Great f***ing album. 9.3/10. which turns into 4.6/5, but we got no decimals on here so unfortunately it does get turned into a 4, but its a helluva 4 that I may look back on in a few months and regret not giving a 5. C'est la vie.
God this is just such a funky album in such a fun way. Obviously the guitar steals the show here it’s fucking Hendrix, but I just love the sound of the drums across this album. The first part of this album feels like a jam session to me in such a fun way like they were just playing around and came out with this masterpiece somehow. Those little riffs on wait until tomorrow get a rewind from me every time so I can listen to them again because it’s just such a satisfying sound, then you jump straight into ain’t no telling with its big loud in your face drums the whole song feels like a drum solo. It’s such a fun album and then… Then we get to little wing, one of my favorite songs ever written. It’s in such a good spot on this funky and fun album it just resets and punches you in the face, that’s the only way I have to describe it every time I hear this song the opening 40 seconds of it punch me in the face, and then I restart the song and let it hit me again, and maybe a 3rd time. I’m not going to go through each individual track, but the other standout song castles made of sand has that same punch you in the face effect on me I love those 2 tracks on this album that just contrast the pace of the majority of the album and that change of pace just works for me. God Hendrix can fucking shred a guitar I love listening to that. Not Hendrix best album, probably not second best either but still a great album. 4.3
Really excited for this, I'll admit my Jimi knowledge is nearly non-existent so I'm hoping for this to be a strong introduction. EXP is a really interesting intro, jarring in many ways with the volume shifting up and down, sounds moving from left to right, and screeching sounds coming in and out. And now we're getting funky, Up From the Skies is a cool laid back jam sesh. Jimi sounds casual in the best way, like he was built for this. He sings in a way that feels like it comes as naturally to him as breathing. Strong start. Immediate strong energy shift into Spanish Castle Magic, hard guitars telling you that this as much rock as it is funk. Don't get too comfortable. Loving this track, the guitars are hypnotizing. The solo at the end of the song is just a display of mastery. And then fuck it let's get a lil funky again. The bass line on Wait Until Tomorrow is so crisp and satisfying to the ears. Ain't No Telling has a jumping energy to it, with the guitar guiding your head up down and side to side as the pace continually shifts in a really captivating way. A short but sweet transition into Little Wing. Which is of course a standout track. So smooth, relaxing, yet still engaging. The filter on Jimi's vocals is perfect for the the accompanying instrumental. If 6 Was 9 is probably my first potential skip - it's a good song, but I feel it goes on longer than is necessary, and the flute outro just felt a bit grating. You Got Me Floatin' is a good bounce back. Solid, catchy guitars and strong backing vocals. Castles Made of Sand is an absolute beauty, love the way the guitar slides on this one at various points, and the instrumental comes in and out in perfect timing. Gorgeous song. Really enjoy the Noel Redding vocals on She's So Fine. Breaks up the album very nicely heading into the last handful of tracks. Love the repeating guitar riff on One Rainy Wish, I'm trying to take notes on every song but it's hard to do that and work at the same time unfortunately. Little Miss Lover rocks. Deep, heavy guitars and another wonky filter on Jimi's voice that compliments it very well. Bold As Love ends on a really strong solo that closes the album out on a very, very high note. I really enjoyed this listen. I'm tempted to give it a 5, but I felt that I got less engaged as the album went on, and as unique as Jimi's sound is it started to feel a bit samey to me at some point. That being said, it's a really beautiful piece of art, and to give it anything less than a 4 would be criminal in my eyes. So that's what I'll be giving it.
Little Wing is a favorite of mine. There were some other good tracks on there too, but overall these are some of the less exciting tracks from Hendrix. Was going to give this album a 3.5, but Bold as Love is one of Hendrix's best performances. Bold as Love is a song that I never wanted to end. 4/5
Listened on a flight yesterday. Idk if I’ve ever actually listened to this one fully through. Banger. Obviously it’s Jimi. I like Jimi. Little wing will always be my favorite Hendrix song, makes me feel like I’m floating and eating the best slice of pizza and also having an orgasm all at the same time. That song alone got this review from me.
Sweet n savory mix of groove and psych. Really liked this top to bottom and having Little Wing you can’t go wrong
Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Little Wing, Castles Made of Sand, Bold as Love With the exception of Exp, this album is awesome. Not as awesome as Are You Experienced, mind you, but still awesome. Exp is interesting for its use of what is effectively spatial sound, which might have been new or novel? at the time, but the track is basically just highly distorted guitar noise with a weird intro. It doesn't seem to contribute to the rest of the album. There's no further reference to UFOs or aliens... As for the rest of the album, Jimi slays it. I personally think the album cover is cool, even if Jimi didn't like it. Hindu iconography (which seems pretty innocuous overall) aside, its pretty trippy, which may very well have been the point, to really drive home the psychedelic rock genre present throughout the album.
