Reviews (page 8 of 8)

Heard nothing that The Cure weren't doing 10 times better at the time. The Seven Mary Three of 80s gothiness

Decent enough

One good song

Self important drivel. The music video for Seven Seas is extra bad.

First listening fell short for me, to be honest. The album sounded two-dimensional, which is super odd given the arrangements seemed pretty elaborate, and the lyrics landed as either rambling or senselessly disjointed (I'm looking at you 'Thorn of Crowns'). And yet, while I listened to the album, I couldn't hear it and not think of Frightened Rabbit; I had to give it another chance. Yeah, nope. Still not into it. At least I'm listening to 'The Midnight Organ Fight' now, so I've got that going for me.

It's alright, but it's a little bland and forgettable.

extremely mid, even bad. not really my taste, but I get the 80s sound they were going for and were a part of.

Pop tranquilo y melódico, sin destacar especialmente. Un tanto plano. Ningún corte de renombre. Voz sin muchas estridencias.

Okay. It's fine. I don't really care. Cool name though.

Not terrible, but very British and very 80s.

New wave really isn’t for me. The 80s sucked.

on the cover you can see the band trapped in the special circle of dante's hell reserved for eighties cult bands. they are condemned to sail round in circles eternally fishing for melodies. they will catch none. only dead bunnies well, okay, the killing moon is good. but the rests of this album is joyless in execution with no melodies and annoying pretentious lyrics nocturnal me i find very creepy lyrically echo and the boo-nymen

Some nice orchestration with upbeat songwriting, but nothing overly special to me

Neopsicodelia. Bastante rollo. Un 2.

Didnt offer much to me

The Killing Moon is great track, the rest of the album was largely forgettable

It was alright and wasn't my genre

Really just not my jam... 2/5 I did finish the album for the most part

If 1001 albums was a genre this would be it, this checks all the boxes. This is the most 1001 sounding album. It’s alright I guess but I don’t really feel anything from it . I’m sure it was probably influential on 80’s/ 90’s alternative but maybe it is one of those had to have been there things. 2.5

Forgetful

Dramatic wavy guitar pop with wimpy vocals. Greek, mediterranen, arabic licks on some of the songs cannot hide the fact that this kind of music has been outdated. Nothing personal but compared to „musical milestones“ this sounds pretty ordinary to my snotty and spoiled ears.

Wasn't a big fan.

Thorn of Crowns made me uncomfortable. Music was alright.

I'll swear by The Killing Moon and title track all day long and twice on Sunday. The rest of this just comes across as overlay pretentious. For those who look down upon The Cure and Joy Division.

Progenitors of Emo show their chops on this mostly mellow, moody outing.

"The Yo Yo Man" had a nice hook. But the best that can be said for the rest of the album is that it is doesn't suck.

I hear a lot of David Bowie in this album, specifically in nocturnal me. Also definitely some Smiths influence. Weird that the band tried to market the album as greatest ever made. Not a huge fan but also not atrocious.

Another album that I never got round to buying back in the day. Record shop decisions on a Saturday afternoon were random. Different factors could influence your choice. The common theme was usually girls and how my latest purchase may - or may not - impress them. I didn't do too badly by turning down Macca and Co. This album is dramatic in places, but equally lame in others. The singles stand out with Silver in particular punching strong. The rest of the record sounds like dodgy Doors demos. My memories of Echo & The Bunnymen are of losers wearing long coats, lurching around at Youth Club discos. I was having all the fun with my Streetsounds compilations and snogs.

Amazing how all 80s-era Britpop albums manage to sound exactly the same across the vox, instrumentals, and general melodic feel. This was a pleasant listen but lacks any distinguishing features to make me feel it warrants inclusion here.

Just listened and cannot remember a thing about it. I don’t even think it was bad, I just can’t remember. Album cover: 3/5 I like all the blue

Didn’t listen

Just alright

Eurythmics had me in a mid 80s frame of mind but Echo and the B could not keep me there. I sensed struggling in the vocals perhaps due to trying to figure out how to make the vocals work with the new found orchestration. The music wasn’t interesting enough to save the vocals.

Killing Moon is nice but I was a bit disappointed by the rest

Not really a fan.

No real stand out songs, all songs kinda just flowed by without any real good ones sticking out to me

that one song was really good

Trying to hard to be edgy but just coming across as pretentious instead. Very disappointing.

It's OK, I don't hate it at all but its not for me.

Never heard of these guys, another British band. Perfectly inoffensive '80s alt rocky stuff, which means we'll probably get another few albums from them too. I liked a couple songs, "The Killing Moon" even sounded familiar. But yeah, it's one of those that I will forget very quickly. Indistinct. Favorite tracks: The Killing Moon, Crystal Days. Album art: Looks like these guys are boating in some deep cave? I don't know what the surrounding sky or scene is supposed to be. It looks pretty cool, but hard to decipher. 2.5/5

The first time I heard the band name 'Echo & The Bunnymen', I thought it was a novelty group, like Weird Al. And since I already loved Weird Al, my first thought was the Echo were a copycat and I never gave them a listen. Having listened now, 'The Killing Moon' is the only real standout for me. The rest of it just never gets there, wherever there is. It's not here, though, I know that. What do I want - more Cure? More Erasure? More Depeche Mode? Yeah, probably something like that. This one never broke through.

meh. not overly impressed. not my first bunnymen rodeo. still remained uninspired by them in general. i'm sure they have a niche, kind of like how crocs have a niche in footwear world.

It's more than a little overblown is my first impression. Did they really need the symphonic orchestra on every track? It's a bit like if the Smiths of The Bad Seeds were fronted by Liam Gallagher or Mary Whitehouse (or even post 2005 Morrissey). All the drama, none of the humour or beauty. Killing Moon is a good song though. That's about as good as I can do. Other than that, this was a slog.

On first listen I was going to give this a 2 because I was largely bored out of my mind by it. Then I heard the last/title track and loved it, so I thought I might have missed something on the rest of the album so I listened to it all the way through again but no turns out it’s mostly just boring

I was in a bit of a bad mood, so that didn’t help but I couldn’t get into it and it felt a bit repetitive

Didn’t know what to expect going into it. It was okay, wouldn’t search it out.

Killing Time is a stunning tune... the rest (apart from Silver & Seven Seas) are absolute garbage.

i know a few songs by echo and the bunnymen, which i really enjoy, but i was expecting to enjoy this album more than i did. the album left me disappointed, but it did include their biggest hit! "the killing moon" was the standout, easily. the choice to include a backing orchestra makes for some gorgeous sounds, especially on "nocturnal me." but still, most songs were forgettable and a little too weird sounding for me.

Now I know what all the fuss is about... not much.

Best Song: Seven Seas. Somewhat energetic, liked the gang vocals. Worst Song: The Yo-Yo Man. Really just sounds like a budget version of The Doors here. Overall: Put another one on the growing pile of English mediocrity. Is this "1001 Albums to Hear before you Die" or "1001 Albums One Man Heard On His Local Radio"?

Boring British garb.

not my sorta music but it sounded good but I'm also never gonna listen to it again probably

Wasn’t a fan of the sound of the lead’s voice.

This was hilariously bad. Horrid singing, no songs worth enjoying, just boring. Somehow "The Killing Moon" has 117m plays on Spotify. 3/10.

More 80s Curish/Smithsish stuff that felt fairly generic to me. Recognized The Killing Moon and I don't know why.

I hate new wave.

Not my taste in 80s rock

The Killing Moon is a great song. The rest of the album seems pretty good. I'd enjoy hearing this one again. 2/5 for now.

Ihan kivaa poppista, mut erityisesti Thorn of Crownsista fiilis on "huonompi Talking Heads".

an awesome The Killing Moon and a bunch of crap

The first five tracks or so were so bland. Kicked up a bit later and I actually saved Seven Seas for permanent rotation. Must be influential or something, because standing alone it’s not terribly worth the time.

Strange music. Not really interesting

not bad but really not my deal. I really like the tile track though.

Weird album, goes from kind of generic british chill rock to punk and back to rock again. An album with no particular songs that are real good, but instead a few songs that I would certainly not place in this album.

Sin mucho que decir

Killing Moon is a great track, but I prefer the Cutter. A whole album of those vocals was a little hard for me to stomach.

Mostly absolute pants

Not that impressed....some decent tracks later on tho

This album just isn't very musical and so it doesn't do anything much for me. The Killing Moon is good but I wouldn't like to hear any of this stuff in more than small quantities.

meh 2 stars

I tried, but I just couldn’t get into it. It feels like it has potential, but it just doesn’t with me.

This was fine, I don’t see myself returning to it again and again though.

Recognise The Killing Moon. I know these guys are highly rated, don't know anything about them though. They sound British and a bit ahead of their time for 80s. Can see how they're popular and can hear how much they've influenced modern music. But hard to love it after one listen, so 2/5

Ugh. Yet another weird ass boring British band. Production value is all over the place, and the songs are boring. I’m sure it fills a space in the narrative linking punk to new wave or something, but no.

Nothing I was necessarily familiar with but the album was fairly consistent. No real standouts aside from maybe The Killing Moon.

sinmas

Meh, relatively boring. Some high points, the killing moon reminded me a little of machine punch through by moist.

First 2 songs, I did not like at all, but got through them. 3& 4 were good but then 5 was a hard listen. 6,7,8 & 9 were ok. I find it hard to beleive that there isnt better albums that didnt make the 1001 list. I gave it 2 Stars - listened to it but not again.

Let's try to sound like REM

Not really feeling this.

Apathetic to the majority of the tracks. If this album was only The Killing Moon it would be awesome.

Sounded more Jangle Pop than Post-Punk, which is a shame because I like Post-Punk but not Jangle Pop. The edgier songs were highlights (Thorn of Crowns), but those were rare. Found myself mostly bored throughout.

Mwah, kon hier niet zoveel mee.

1st song baited me into thinking it would be a fun album

More like 2.5. It's fine to listen to but does get a bit boring after a while.

Overrated. Still 1 classic song

The Killing Moon feels like it was recorded by a different band. Which is unfortunate as it is the best song by quite a margin.

Hmmm, what would make this a must listen album? Not terrible, but not much else going on for me. I listened twice but it just missed the mark. Would prefer an album I hated so I least I would have something to say.

Fine. Not for me.

Hey it has those songs I recognize from a movie or something. Not bad.

It didn’t catch my attention enough to remember the next day. Genetic 80s music.

Standard 80s

Don‘t like his voice

I must be a tough, one man crowd. This didn't grab me at all. Except for Killing Moon, which is such an ace track, the rest failed to inspire any foot tapping and have since been forgotten. 2.7/5, probably would have been a 1 if not for Killing Moon.

I'm aware of this artist, and I recognize one track by name on this album. I don't get the obsession with this band. At times, I was tempted to give this a 2, but in the end it doesn't deserve it. The track "Thorn of Crowns" is one such example that forced this decision for me. I really hated that one.

Nothing but Video not available. Unable to listen to it.

Just a pretty generic album that sounds like nothing

Such a disappointing album. Every song seemed to have so much potential to begin with. But the way they used each track made it a pretty hard listen. Songs I liked: 1/5

Genuinely not great.

this is ass 1/10 Will I add this album to my library? no

Tvö lög ágæt, hitt óspennandi.

Despite my appreciation for Killing Moon, I did not enjoy this album.

Not my thing

Oh I really don't like it. Maybe the guy's voice?

Vocals are like nails on a chalkboard

nada que decir. Muy lejos de ser de mi agrado. No le encuentro gracia

Nocturnal me is familiar but else wise…1

the killing moon és la bso de donnie darko!! prou sin más m'he avorrit un poc

Fuck this is rough.

Did not like one second of this. Cannot understand the appeal.

it wasn't acceptable in the 80s

Meandering and boring. Has no discernible direction other than being uninteresting. Decent opening track then devolves into an entirely skippable album. Hard pass

Dagge får sitt new wave lystmäte tillfredsställt igen....

Self- important claptrap.

Strange band from the 80’s and 90’s. No big hits. Think they tried to copy other bands of the time. (INXS, The Cure, etc.)

I can’t listen to any more bad British music from the 80s. Please make it stop.

BRUTAL LISTEN. WANNABE JEFFERSON AIRPLANE. SOUNDS SO MUCH LIKE BLEACHERS, WHO I ALSO HATE LOL 80'S POP IS VERY HIT OR MISS FOR ME, ESPECIALLY SOFT POP LIKE THIS. BOOOOO

Really weird and bad, somewhat laughable in fact

Found this quite dull, my only recollection being thinking thst if they stuck on Editors’ weird effects peddle it’d be infinitely better. But as I’m not musical myself I have no idea if that peddle exists or if they even sound like a stripped back Editors

1. zilver - 1 2. me - 1.5 3. cryztal - 1.5 4. yo yo - 1.5 5. crouunz - 1 6. moon - 1.5 7. zeven - 1 8. kindom - 1.5 9. rain - 1.5

What was the point of this, it was awful at the time and age has withered it more.

Echo and the bunnymen suck. Period. Who put them/this album on the list. Jesus, this is a suckfest 1001 album worthy: No - 49/87

A very talented lead singer. The vocal mix is too loud and the underlying music is too boring.

I cant put my thoughts on this album to words without using derogatory slurs so I'll stay quiet

Completely unremarkable until that all you need is love/Dylan cover came on. That was trash

Not for me

I don't get it at all.

OK, I can tolerate it. \"Yo Yo Man\" Very computerized.

Yes, drama-kid, I see you. You're very dark and mysterious. Don't forget your lunchbox.

Another Echo and the Bunnymen album on this list, and just like the previous ones, another album that I will never think about again.

Just don't like this band.

Not for me. It's an automatic 1 for Mr Rabbit. (Even though I did listen to the album, I found nothing of interest)

Nothing to write home about.

Too many bland UK rock bands so far.

No real positives from this album.

Really weird 80s album. Ton of synthesizer etc

Talking Heads is that you?? No part of me is begging to relisten to this

Very dated 80's punk/psychedelia. Not for me.

- Orchestra makes it sound like a movie soundtrack - this album exists in a weird world, like it should be the Donny darko theme - It just doesn’t click for me

Slogging through this was like eating sand. As if the title “Nocturnal Me” wasn’t bad enough, the listener is then subjected to what evokes a creepy rapist villain in a low budget musical forcing his kidnapped victim to listen to his sexual assault agenda in advance. Let’s hope she escapes before having to listen to the entire disaster. As if to reinforce the sleazy predator vibe with zero self awareness, “Thorn of Crowns” exposes us to McCulloch’s pathetic, nauseating, and odious orgasmic moaning for 4 hellish minutes or until we leave to take a shower. You almost have to applaud this level of mastadonic narcissism. “Killing Moon” was ok. I would give this 0 stars if I could.

Ughhhh Bonus decimals for trying to make it interesting with the orchestra. 1.3

If you have nothing to say, don’t say it. Definitely do not write lyrics about cauliflower.

Boring, sorry

So boring

I guess he's called Echo because he likes repeating the same melody and the same shitty lyrics ad nauseum. He should also get that stutter checked out. I give them one broken, skipping record out of five.

Everyone has one annoying friend who would spend an hour explaining why this album isn't bad and is actually foundational to an even worse genre of music.

Not my style of music

This is some truly terrible singing within some extremely mediocre music. I got about 2 songs through before I had to quit. Really - this has no place in the list.

Didn’t like this one

Didn’t finish—slowly getting weary of this genre.

Not a massive fan on first listen. A bit like the Smiths if I didn't like them. May grow on me, but won't be jumping to listen again.

didn't like it, couldn't get through it

Pretty awful

this album is probably the REM of post-punk, but I've had enough of these wiggly vocals and soporific indie instrumentation.

Overblown and underwhelming. Sounds like Hunters and Collectors with tickets on themselves.

Didn't love it

No me gusta la voz

Worst music era in history

This was not good. Nothing memorable

Generic 80s indie ‘meh’

one day there will be a good album. today was not that day.

Eh straange

I was surprised to find that this album annoyed the crap outta me! I’ve always loved The Killing Moon 🌚 but by the time we made it around to that song I as too annoyed to continue and turned it off. Try as we might, we just couldn’t settle into a comfortable groove.
