Loved this one, soft sounds and strong melodies. Come back to this
Very interesting album with a nice spacey vibe. More electronic than I was expecting. closer to a 4.3 maybe?
Strong album
To much for yesterday's energy
Ok. Comfortable
3.5 stars - better than I expected!
I enjoy spinning a Flaming Lips album from time to time, but I've never been able to get into them like I have other bands. They make some wild and good music, though, and they might have some of the best album art and titles of all time across their discography ('At War With the Mystics' is incredible). This album has always been fun. + *here I come with yet another Portlandia reference* I can only ever think of the music festival episode of Portlandia when I hear "Do You Realize??"
By god the drums on this album are good!
I forgot I don't really like the Flaming Lips that much
H: this album felt disjointed to me. The first four brought feelings of battle while the last 2/3 felt somber and the final song brought triumph. I wasn’t sure if I liked it through the whole thing. 5/10 H fav song: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt 1 Z: I wasn’t sure what to expect my first time listening to the Flaming Lips and to be honest I’m still not sure what to think. This felt like a concept album that didn’t click for me. It almost felt experimental for the sake of being experimental, but I’ll have to listen to more of their discography to be sure. 6.2/10 For fans of: acid, science fiction, acid Z fav song: It’s Summertime
6/10 Very interesting sound. I quite like it
Correcto
My wife liked it and I have to admit it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
a little mid on the first listen. 6.5/10. some cool stuff, some boring stuff, etc.
This is a very chill album, i quite enjoyed it
Have I listened to this album before? No How familiar am I with this album? Completely unfamiliar How do I feel about this artist? I know a lot of cool people that like The Flaming Lips but I've never really listened to them. Pre-Listen Thoughts: Do I like The Flaming Lips? Today is the day we find out. Favorite track(s): Title Track, It’s Summertime Post-Listen Thoughts: At the end of the day, I think I still just feel neutral about The Flaming Lips. Nothing about this was unpleasant, but it didn’t really grab me either. The musical sounds fun though.
First time really going through an album of this genre it was cool to hear something new, really good project.
should probably listen more intentionally. I have listened to this album in the past though and gone to a concert for it. "Do you realize??" is still a great song, but the album as a whole felt a bit too low energy at the time of listening. I think I will revisit it again another time.
Laadi-daa. Vähän pörinää siellä täällä, muuten jotenki blääh. Silleen easy-listening, ei pahaa sanottavaa mut ei myöskään erottunut edukseen.
Ok album. Fight Test is a big rip-off of Cat Stevens. Do you realize is good too. 3.
I ended up liking it, didn't realize there were song I recognized on here
cool
Starts off reasonably well with 'Fight Test' before heading into One More Robot and then Yoshimi pt 1. Then gets sorta lost and wanders around for another 1/2 hour whilst you wonder what the fuck they are on about - seriously, what the fuck is Yoshimi pt 2?? It offends my ears and really starts to grate after only about 10 seconds. For the rest, the music lacks much diversity, with all the songs starting to blend into one after a while. 'Do You Realize?' provides some welcome relief in the back half of the album, with its heavy themes and slightly more interesting arrangements. But then it's back to more wigging out for the last couple of songs. Disappointing.
This is a nice, mellow album that is easy on the ear but I kept waiting for it to grab my attention and demonstrate why it's on this list. It didn't quite achieve that. Sonically, it sounds nice, with many textures and layers but I didn't hear anything here to make me want to explore The Flaming Lips further. Three stars. 1 "Fight Test" (4/5) 2 "One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21" (3/5) 3 "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1" (3/5) 4 "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 2" (3/5) 5 "In the Morning of the Magicians" (3/5) 6 "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" (3/5) 7 "Are You a Hypnotist??" (3/5) 8 "It's Summertime"(3/5) 9 "Do You Realize??" (3/5) 10 "All We Have Is Now" (3/5) 11 "Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" (3/5) Total - 34 Average - 3.09 337/1001 183/337 albums reviewed were new to me.
I mean...it's cute, and I definitely appreciate it. But I was expecting to like it more! I think the biggest hurdle for me is Wayne Coyne's voice. It's endearing, but he constantly sounds like he's singing out of his range. But outside of that, I enjoy the theming, I enjoy the production, I enjoy the total ripoff of Father and Son by Cat Stevens. For fans of Radiohead who wished that band took more drugs and didn't shower.
This is very good but I'm just not in love with it idk
Ethereal, atmospheric. Good beats, enjoyable jams. All songs seem to be around the same "level." I think the first half of the album is more memorable than the second.
One of my most pretentious friends in high school had this album as his favourite album (his favourite film was Mulholland Drive). I just couldn’t get into it and thought it was incredibly boring. So, it was with some trepidation that I listened to this. It honestly wasn’t as bad as I was expecting; some of the songs were even quite catchy (“Fight Test”). My old feeling that it was incredibly pretentious was still there, though. I can’t say I want to listen to it again, but I have more respect for it now and can see why people might think it’s quite good. I just miss any type of energy in the album. Weak 3.
I was totally oblivious about The Flaming Lips and they fell on me on a day where my mood couldn't have been worse for this genre to stick. Maybe I will come back to them, but for the moment, I'm not particularly impressed. I liked the synth hypnotic vibes.
Would I listen to this ever again? No. But was this a very interesting and memorable listen? Yes, it's not often that I discover an artist with a very particular sound and personality. So even if I didn't personally enjoy this, I am very glad I listened to this album because at least they're doing some fun and interesting.
Interesting listen. So very electronic stuff and some dreamy stuff. Not my favorite genre, but I was good with it.
Highlights: Yoshimi BattlesThe Pink Robots Pt. 1, In the Morning of the Magicians, Fight Test, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell and Do You Realize. 3.7
Most are the same slowish tempo with some melodic sounds. Might listen to it as background music If I was snoozing on a beach somewhere.
A fun and kinda different rock band from the 00s.
Cool album, didn’t like the instrumental songs
Decent but not brilliant, didn’t really grab me apart from the singles
Heard Before? Too many times. When it came out I was working at a coffee shop with my best friend and he would play it constantly. Notes: - I understand why this is their most popular album, but it still sounds to me like a re-tread of The Soft Bulletin with weaker songs. - the mix is glorious and the arrangements are fantastic. so many cool sounds and ideas, although most songs are too long. anything with a chorus gets repeated too many times. - more slower songs than I remembered. - the crowd noise motif irritates me. - i could happily listen to just the drum tracks from the whole album. Verdict: The Lips at their most gorgeously overproduced and poppy. It's faux-naive stargazing music for people who don't want to grow up. Listen Again? Probably not, although it was fun to hear again after so many years. I will, however, put on the rawer, weirder and more exciting Embryonic right now.
Weird album, that’s about all there is to it. There are certain songs that I like, like the title track, but the rest is just weird and kind of boring.
It’s a pleasant album, though likely one I’ll soon forget. Initially, this quality even led me to believe it was a concept album, telling a story from start to finish. That impression faded somewhat later on, and based on what I read after listening the creators themselves seem to distance themselves from that particular label. Musically and vocally, it’s not really my vibe. Simply put: It’s boring. Were it not for the fact that this group compels me to listen attentively, this album would likely have passed right through me without leaving a trace. That said, I believe this album does have resonate themes that are impactful, specifically loneliness, isolation, and the monotony of our day to day lives. And while these themes do resonate with me, they ultimately leave me feeling indifferent toward the album and its content. Personally, I would have liked to hear a bit more life in it so to speak.
This one was cool
I really liked the electronic elements throughout the album, I feel like they helped carry moments that otherwise I might’ve found a tad boring. I don’t have anything super crazy to note, but I enjoyed the overall sound. I’ll sit down and revisit at some point. Top 3: Do You Realize??, Fight Test, In the Morning of the Magicians
pretty solid…wtf are these guys doing in OKC?
Dunno how to describe. Too 2000s
Ni slabo, but was expecting more
A bit weird with the effects, but some of the songs are now on a playlist. The vocals were not anything to notice/mention. Better than average, but not something I would listen to as a whole.
Dull
Felt like this album was totally ubiquitous at the time, but I don't remember much about it other than the title track and Do You Realize? Flaming Lips have gone on to become increasingly zany and annoying, but this album contains a pleasant level of melancholy and self-reflection. Much of the production is very charming, but there is an element of "we're kerazzee guys" in some of the musical choices.
Inventive, beautiful, but a tad inconsistent
uma produção que não estou habituada, especialmente a 4 mix fixe de sons na 5. um oboe ai atoa melancólico mas otimista de certa forma
This album was an interesting experience with some fantastic production and fabulous synths. However, I often found myself wishing there was a bit more meat on the proverbial bone. Fav Song: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots 2 Least fav: Are you a hypnotist
Gran banda, tendria que escuchar sus otros discos
I don't now why I didn't expect a mid-00s indie sound, I thought Flaming Lips was older.
I liked this! Not my usual genre of choice but I was surprised to actually enjoy it. I liked the mix of hip hop sounding rhythms with psychedelic/ dreamy guitar and synthy stuff it was enjoyable actually. I am not sure if I’ll revisit it though, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily bad, cos it’s not. I liked it. But again it’s not my usual style and if I’m being truly honest I probably won’t relisten to it. And I also can’t say there were any tracks that stood out that much to me with the only exception being yoshimi battles the pink robots pt1. But i appreciated listening to it today.
Very fun, psychadelic/hipster, tried to listen while cooking but liked it better while driving in the car. Rock Operas need to come back again.
sadzies robo tunzies
Experimental, full sintetizadores. Sé que es un muy buen álbum pero no es para mí.
I like Do You Realize, and In the Morning of the Magicians. I don’t do enough acid to enjoy the rest
palatable
Oh, now this had a LOT of hype and love when it came out. I own the CD (ask your parents). And yeah, it's good. Clever, chilled........ it doesn't grab you by the crotch and make you LOVE it though.
Cat Stevens Experimentell mit Sounds Japan vibe
This album hits that rare spot where everything feels incredibly calm on the surface, but there’s this constant, heavy intensity underneath. The whole aura is just perfect—it's like a beautiful, digital daydream that’s secretly dealing with some very real human stakes. The instrumentals are such a great fit, blending those warm acoustic guitars with glitchy, bubbling electronics that keep the mood steady but deeply engaging. The story is what really gives it weight. On one level, I’m following this sci-fi narrative about Yoshimi training to take down giant pink robots, which sounds like a fun comic book plot. But as I listen to those beautiful lyrics, it becomes clear that the "robots" are metaphors for the much scarier, unstoppable things we face in life—like loss or just the passage of time. The protagonist is basically fighting to keep her spirit alive in a world that can feel cold and mechanical. Wayne Coyne’s voice is exactly what it needs to be here. It’s not powerful in a flashy way, but it’s so vulnerable and sincere that it makes the philosophical moments feel personal rather than preachy. Even though the music stays relatively calm, the emotional stakes feel huge. It’s a journey that starts with a robot battle and ends with a deep, peaceful realization about how fragile everything is. It’s just a great, cohesive experience that feels both massive and intimate at the same time.
Soft indie rock with electronic and psychedelic elements. Very layered sound, e.g. multiple layers, synth strings, with reverb. Sounds like a progression of the BritPop sound (almost Gorillaz adjacent, but less trip hop, more ambient/trip hop) Concept album, story as per title, but who is Yoshimi? I feel like I should love this, but it's a bit too ambient, not enough drive to engage me throughout. Probably worth listening to again one day. Best track - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt 2, Ego Tripping, Are You A Hypnotist, Do You Realize 3.5 stars, so a 3
Klangy like the robot, soft like the karate master
tracks 3 and 4 are so fire; this album feels like a boss fight
Pleasant enough to have on in the background but I doubt I will listen to it again.
An interesting album, but not in a bad way! Flight test was a good track to start off with. It was pretty and calming. One more robot also had that very calming vibe. I have memories of playing Yoshimi battles the pink robots part 1 on rock band. It’s a good track, but I don’t have too many feelings about it. Pt 2 was awesome! I love a good instrumental track. The woodwinds in In the Morning of the Magicians were lovely. They were only there briefly, but were noticed. I could sleep to this track. Ego tripping at the gates of hell was interesting. Are you a hypnotist was hypnotizing. The little bird sound effects in its Summertime were super cute. I liked Do You Realize, it was very sweet! While similar to the previous track, All We Have is Now was also quite nice. Utopia Planitia was a nice closer. 3.5/5 ⭐️. Was a fun listen for nostalgia purposes, had some great moments, but did get slightly repetitive at times. 120/1089
Such a fun album I really enjoyed listening to it albeit a day later. I don’t have a favourite track but I enjoyed the world building of this anime-cyberpunk inspired world that Flaming Lips brought to life! Rating: 3.5/5 GEMV (29.04.2026)
Wasn't bad but not memorable.
2002. Diverse array of subject matter, mostly melancholy ponderings about love, mortality, artificial emotion, pacifism, and deception, while telling the story of Yoshimi's battle. Title character is inspired by musician Yoshimi. Not intended to be a concept album.
Their tenth album. Indie / Synth. I like the concept and the dreamy delivery is kind of cool but it does lack a little oomph after a while. I almost nodded off, so as a chill out album it's very effective. 2.5 rounded up to a 3 here.
This is bouncy-ball music for adults. its harmless, but also sterile. I saw them last summer so this was a nice, listen.
At the first track, going in with a sorta 'judging a book by its cover' mindset, right now this just sounds like most other rock albums floatin' round' the big ol' pool that's music. I do like how it sounds, though. I just need it to start soundin' a lil unique, 'n it'll be golden. The second track's giving me a bit more hope. The sound's definitely more unique, though I'm still left desiring something. "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part 2". What is this album bro. Genuine nonsense at this point LOL it ain't bad but it's just a lil' goofy "In the Morning of the Magicians" is phenomenal. Favorite so far I feel like this album slowly got somewhat better near the end. Nonetheless, it's okaaaay. Nothin' special
So much of this is just pleasant, fluffy indie rock. Cartoonish! Maybe my mind is being influenced by the cover art, I don't know. This is nice stuff, my issue is that so many of the songs sound so clearly like experiments. "Do You Realize?" Is a fantastic song. All told this is a comfortable THREE STARS
Quite experimental I liked it, except for Yoshimi Pt.2. Other than that song, the whole album was very nice, I liked its range of vibes, in the way that some songs were relatively chill while others felt more experimental and vibrant. Reminiscent of Pink Floyd's style, you can definitely see the inspiration.
norm
Do you realise is on this album! I in fact did not realise
Niet voor mij.
These guys opened for Weezer when Lily and I went ~1.5 years ago. Seemed like some interesting cats
Cute at times, boring at times, but ultimately it took me three days to finish because I kept not wanting to listen
Soothing music, but not too appealing
Best Songs: One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21 Yoshimi Battles The Punk Robots, Pt. 1
It was okay, not really my kind of music but i'm sure it's good to others
The Flaming Lips are a very strange band, because the music they make was never meant to be mass-market. But by their tenth album, it had. Listening to it, you get the feeling you've been floating inside some starship for almost fifty minutes, looking down at Earth from outer space. That's probably how ambient music is supposed to work, but ambient lulls me to sleep, and here it's just the right amount for enjoyment. And the most incredible thing is that the foundation of this cosmic music is a completely ordinary, almost bardic acoustic guitar. It's responsible for the album's ringing sound, and the rest are just decorative add-ons: hip-hop beats and a touch of electronica. It's a good, meditative, and beautiful record, but to avoid it feeling boring, you need to listen to it in a certain, slightly dreamy mood.
this was different…… but i kinda liked it
I quite enjoyed this one. Would be interested in exploring more
Pretty unique sound, not the biggest fan of the vocalist but the music surrounding him is pretty neat. Favorite track: Do You Realize??
Thought less of it than I remembered. A few of the songs combined psychedelic sounds, melody and child-like sentiment that can be poignant. Too many of them fell short musically. Prefer other records of they've made.
7/10. Give another listen for sure. Favorites: "Yoshimi Part 1 &2," "Fight Test," "Are You Hypnotist??," and "Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)" (for its title alone).
fun!
Not my music
A fun mix of songs. Cool concept.
Do You Realize.... all of the Flaming Lips catalogue is intensely boring? Okay, I really hated the first half of this record, but I must admit, Do You Realize?? and All We Have is Now got me kind of emotional.
Despite having listened to "the hits" on this album uncountable times, this is probably only the third or fourth time I've listened to this album all the way through. I was surprised by how much felt inessential or merely interstitial. It sounded good and fun enough, but it didn't hold my attention too much. When the kids are out of the house and I get back into psychedelics this album will definitely be on though.
quite different to the music i usually listen to but found this quite good. At best a quirky concept album. A refreshing sound.
#6 10th April 2026 Never heard of this album before- kind of vibed with most of it, but not typically meant for me. track mentions; one more robot/ sympathy 3000-21 fight test
entiendo la vibra del nuevo sonido, pero siento que OK computer es mas revolucionario que salió antes y el sonido se me hizo bonito pero monótono a lo largo de todo el disco
Sooo good 💿
A children's album for adults. Fun as long as you don't think about it.
é mediano, mas tem algumas músicas bem boas. 2,5/5.
Reminds me of something I would’ve listen to 4 years ago. Liked it but wouldn’t put it on in my car (ultimate test)
Really liked the first song and everything was solid but got somewhat boring think it’s in need of a relisten and I think there is better out there.
Three stars, three robots. Do You Realize?? is gorgeous, I see why it gets played at funerals. ⭐️⭐️⭐️🤖🤖🤖
not my style
Overall Rating - 2.55/5 (5.09/10). The first couple of songs were fun, but then it went weird and unpleasant.
Leuk, maar is wss t leukst als k t paar keer heb geluisterd
I forgot to rate this at the time but I’m landing on a solid midpoint for me
Muy bye album, no lo conocía, me gustó mucho.
Always heard of the Flaming Lips but never took the time to listen. Spacey, easy rock with some cool synthesizer sounds that I know were newish for the time. I really liked the Postal Service around this time so I wasn't surprised to see that they had collabed. Some of the lyrics got in the way - the whole yoshimi focus just doesn't hit for me. Some cool songs, some actually annoying songs.
I respect that this album seems as if it’s written for someone who is coming of age. Bearing that in mind I probably would rate this higher if I had discovered this album 20 years ago. The album was a fun ride but I can’t help but feel like it’s not written for someone in their late thirties.
This is fun, I'm enjoying the electronic influence. The whole album flows well and has some nicer moments like the end of Are You a Hypnotist?? It feels somewhat like a concept album but it never had it's big moment for me. The highs weren't very high, the lows weren't very low, but I'd enjoy more like this with some more instrumental or vocal flash in there somewhere. Just a good sound overall. Part 1 of the title track was my favorite.
I have to admit, I had the wrong impression of what The Flaming Lips were in my mind. I had Vaseline in my ears, which is not a great reflection of what this album sounds like. I very much enjoyed it, and will likely start with the later part of their career and work my way back!
The first track, which borrows from Cat Stevens’ Father and Son, is nice. And the sound generally is far richer than I’d expected - I’d never listened to the Flaming Lips but had them pigeonholed as generic US indie-rock. I wasn’t blown away by the album, though. Possibly in part because it’s about the fourth album in the last few 1001 albums listening weeks that’s been some sort of sci-fi influenced concept piece! Enough of the sci-fi, already…
This... is certainly not what I expected the Flaming Lips to sound like. I always imagined them as one of those pretentious "indie" bands you see on the lineup for Coachella every other year and wonder who actually listens to their music. Psychedelic space rock with trip hop elements? That's something I can actually get behind. That said, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots does have its weak points and probably isn't going to be something I'll go out of my way to listen to (in full) any time soon. Highlights: Fight Test, One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 2, In the Morning of the Magicians, Are You a Hypnotist??
very interesting.
Liked it more than I thought I would, but some parts fell flat.
kinda reminds me of radiohead, but like 70s even though it came out in 2002. fight test, all we have is now, and its summertime are the favs. actually, more like the antlers than radiohead. overall though, not my cup of tea.
Incredible album name. Music was nice.
Few grooves but overall not super my jam!
The eponymous song was catchy, but not a lot other than that
Some great songs others that i did not enjoy so much, a little bit too trippy jam band vibes
Fun, easy listening
Ég hlustaði mikið á titillag plötunnar hér áður fyrr og hélt að nú væri komin plata að mínum smekk sem hún er en situr samt ekki nógu mikið eftir
Það vantar möguleikann að gefa þrjá og hálfa stjörnu. Skemmtileg plata að sumu leyti.
Almost a 4, but not quite. Still amaze!
medium enthousiast sommige leuk sommige stom
The last album before Wayne and fwiends disappeared up their own assholes.
Strange one.
This might cure my sleeping isues bc in the span of the album's duration i genuinely fell asleep at least two times.
Pretty nice record. "Do you realize??" Is a great pop tune
This list has established a habit of including artists I like, but then choosing an album that I think is an inferior offering to other items in their bin. So it goes with this one. However in this relisten to an album I’d once written off, I can’t deny liking some bits far more than I remember. The bass player and I had a love affair throughout the album, and he knew all the right notes to play. Their most successful moments are the ones where they strip away all the songwriter-y parts leaving the deadly rhythm section and just the accentuating production pieces, a flute segue here, a splash of synth there. Then there’s Wayne’s signature delivery which, though teetering on the edge, often rings true to me. He seems earnest and that’s part of their schtick. I think this is intended to be music for (pseudo-)intelligent, progressive(-seeming) listeners, but they usually get there by playing and singing with recklessly juvenile earnestness. And it works…sometimes. I mostly believe them.
A pleasant surprise. I never been into the Flaming Lips. Last year I tried listening to Soft Bullet and just didn’t get it. This album made a lot more sense to me. Interesting sounds with a lot of creative production techniques. Overall, a solid concept record. Makes me want to give Soft Bullet another chance.
As I felt at the time, pretty boring apart from the several obvious high highs, particularly compared to the album(s) before it!
A bit weird. One track on here I knew well but didn't realise was them. It was fine, but not quite my cuppa tea.
epic
Sympa mais pas trop mon style et un peu trop triste 3/5
I quite enjoyed, but not best of all time material
oh my. such a mixed one. bangers like 'in the morning of the magicians' and 'are you a hypnotist??' preceeded and followed by the lamest plainest songs like the namesake of the album and the most popular 'do you realize??'... im just confused
Having not listened to this album for about 15 years, I'm starting to feel Wayne Coyne's Moog synthesiser didn't get to the credit it deserved at the time for the amount of heavy lifting it's doing on this bloody record. The hits remain the the hits here. But the rest, as Walt Whitman said, is middling psychedelic guff. 3.2.
There's bits of this I really like. And bits that are just meh. I never really liked the big single from this album when it came out so never checked them out further. It's got some nice enough tracks on it though.
I've dabbled with this album before and never really could get into it. Sadly it's the same here. I enjoyed what I was listening to but it was too easy to let it fade into background music.
Great Flaming Lips album
fun, not a fav, but decent fav-Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell
Kook 'n roll
Me gusto, tiene algunos arreglos que me resultan innecesarios, pero tambien muchas canciones lindas. En algunas la guitarra acustica me recordo a Cat Stevens 3/5
Wasn’t familiar. Glad I listened. Don’t know if I’d go out of my way to listen though.
I have never heard of this band or this album, but it's an apparently popular album based on Spotify track-play numbers. First impressions: Strong "sidewalk strut" base and guitar mixed with rock & roll musical tropes. "Flight Test" is a hell of an introduction to the album and really sets up the vibes and general sound you should expect to hear. It's a concept album at its core and the steady heartbeat of drums carries this album much further than the other instruments. The second half of the album after "In the Morning of Magicians" feels specifically designed for experiencing while high or tripping. Overall rating is 7/10
Not bad, also not exactly my cup of tea. Will still be added to my library
An album I thought I'd love based off the stuff I'd heard. Didn't live up to it tbh. I enjoyed the concept of the album and the sci-fi theme but beyond a couple of songs (Do you realise and Yoshimi pt.1) I didn't really get into the rest of it. One that I'm glad I've listened to in full but not one I'd rush back to.
First of all, I have never explored The Flaming Lips, and for me anyway, its hard to just jump into thier 10th studio album of 16, without knowing what came before and after. I couldn't even tell you if this was thier prime time, or had they sold out, or was this just something they picked up the pieces from their past, and just threw on an album. So, having no history, I didn't love it and didn't hate it. But still feel like I know nothing about it.
Psychadelic, story telling, vibes, serene, unique sounds, melodic
me gustó, hay muchos elementos que he escuchado en otros álbumes y asumo que se ha tomado como inspiración. me gusta el sonido, la producción del mismo.
Not my vibe
Some quite nice east listening stuff. Though I expect the robots will win.
not bad but just not my thing!
Their songwriting and arrangements are quiet good, but their sounds and aesthetics aren't my cup of tea. Yet, respect for being inventive in songs.
First track got me listening with purpose. Then it got a little same-same. Like the arrangements and (?oboe) interesting instrumentation usage. Prefer those moments to the more synth tracks. Saved a couple tracks.
Pleasantly delightful elclectiveness
Do You Realize is one of my favorite songs ever. The rest of this is just okay Best Song: Do You Realize Rating: 5.5/10 Stars: 3/5
Legal, nada inovador mas legal. É uma vibe mais chill com um pouco de alternative. To dando um 3 mais pra cima
I've seen this album cover so many times before. I had very high expectations, and sadly I did not love it as much as I wanted to. I think i could compare this one to smashing pumpkins, but this just didn't click as much as it could've. High 3 or low 4.
Ok so here’s the second album I’ve heard by these guys on this list and once again it’s turning out to be a good listen. Maybe it’s a bit more song oriented than the other album I heard and there are some great experimental touches to the production. These guys seem more popular than the music suggests which is surprising because of how experimental it is sometimes but maybe that’s why I never got to hear anything by them until now. After listening to this I definitely need to make some time to check out their back catalogue.
*Points* Weeaboo album. I never actually realised they were American but only ever had a passing interest in them. This one is decent, a good listen but nothing I really latched on to. Just feels like it's missing something.
I liked this more than I thought I would.
good but not my vibe
Not really sure how I feel about this one.
particolare. merita di essere ascoltato. però i suoni dissonanti del genere mi disturbano. bella fight test
Technically brilliant, a bit pedestrian though
Although Wayne Coyne’s vocals are whiny there is still some great variety and dynamics in this album.
It started off really good. Those songs at the beginning were great. The longer it went on though I got more tired of it's repetitiveness, and some of those songs towards the end were too soppy and became a drag to listen to.
Wasn’t my cup of tea but can understand why people enjoy it. Great LoFi album, good stoner music. Would definitely turn it on for an acid trip if I did that
It's alright
The way people talk about this album on the subreddit, I was expecting it to be a complete masterpiece. It's kinda weird at the start which I like, but then I started to lose interest towards the end. Slightly disappointed
Fight Test: 5.6/10 One More Robot/ Sympathy 3000-21: 6/10 Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1: 4.8/10 Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2: 6.7/10 In The Morning of the Magicians: 5/10 Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell: 4/10 Are You a Hypnotist??: 4.8/10 It’s Summertime: 4/10 Do You Realize??: 4.5/10 All We Have Is Now: 4/10 Approaching Pavonis Mons by Ballon (Utopia Planitia): 6/10
I don’t consider myself much of an experimental rock fan but this album was a great listen.
Interesting. Goofy. Title track is oddly timely, probably accidentally so.
I appreciate their artsy nature, but some songs feel like they don't ever end.
7/10. Easy to listen, but not attracting my taste
This was good 3
I’ve never heard of this band before. I liked track #1, but could’ve done without the weird sound effects at the end. The rest of the album all blended together, there was nothing that really stood out. But it was still cool to hear somebody new! Rating 2.5/5
Interesting album! I’ve never heard it before and I’ll definitely give it another listen. Favorite Song: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt 1 - cools effect sounds, fun story
loved these guys back in the day (first UK Soft Bulletin tour, half-empty venue, amazing show) but have faded away over time
More accessible than I expected. It's kind of just soft rock.
Such an unusual and surprisingly popular album. It's not bad, but I would call it a concept album for sure.
playful
psychedelic rock; this is one of those albums I need to trip on...main vocalist reminds me a lot of Tame Impala if he was a bit more melancholic. Like a lot. Some of the instrumentals remind me of Gorillaz if it was calmer rock. Very unique album, my favorites are Fight Test, Are You a Hypnotist??, and In the Morning of the Magicians.
Fine. Kind of boring in retrospect.
An interesting concept initially, fusing acoustic rock with futuristic electronic and robotic elements to create a wide soundscape and evoke unusual emotions. However, the shtick gets a bit repetitive and boring. A fun listen, but nothing deeply moving.
Better than I expected! ⭐⭐⭐.75
I know the Flaming Lips but never really gave them a proper listen. Bring a black belt in karate sounds cool, and Yoshimi starts pretty strong. While this album does have a nice sound, each track is a bit same-y. But, overall, it's a pretty nice album.
I loved the title track for this album, and it will likely see regular rotation. The rest of the album is fairly hit or miss.
Parts of this album were cool, other parts were pretty bland. The singing style is too much of the same thing for me. Kind of a cool shoegaze record, if you’re into that.
I've known "Do You Realize?" for years, and recently started hearing "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" on the radio, but I didn't know any of the other songs.
Haven't listened to the full Flaming Lips record before. I digged it! Wasn't blown away. 3 stars
Interesting album
This was my first ever Flaming Lips album and it was a pleasant experience. Super psychedelic and dreamy, this is an album full of sunshine and good vibes. The alien synths do feel rather one-note and causes this album to become background listening at times. The only track I downright didn't like is the instrumental cut 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots, Pt 2'. The screaming and synths started to actively annoy me here. I don't think I'll be rushing back to the whole album much, but tracks like 'Fight Time', 'Are You A Hypnotist??' and 'So You Realize??' would be welcome additions to any chillout playlist. I can see why this is on the list as you can see how this sound influenced the indie scene during the decade to come.
It's fine. Like, it's creative and fun. Nothing wrong with it. I just don't really care.
very strange, dreamy and psychedelic, almost feels like i'm in a fever dream while listening to the album. the lyrics are imo pretty unremarkable and borderline childish though somehow, combined with the structure of the songs and melodies, it keeps you deep (maybe not that deep) in thought about the messages behind them all.
soft and mellow, but not exactly my cup of tea
3.5/5
Loved this. A little too Radiohead for me at times, but solid.
Better than I thought. Not all of the songs are 'there' but the texture was nice.
Probably the same thing I said about their last album that I got: This sounds exactly like something I would love, but for some reason I don’t. I don’t dislike it or anything, but I just can’t get into them for some reason.
It's good. I wasn't moved to tears or anything, but I don't understand the hate for it either. Standout Tracks: Flight Test In the Morning of the Magicians
There's the one where they rip off Father and Son.
Not a bad listen and I could probably get into the album if I gave it a few listens
bo, diferente, instrumental unico, mas uma Otima batida. cada musica com uma vibe e mensagem diferentes, bom.
Full send on the funky robot stuff. Not bad not sure I would listen to it again tbh
This was a pretty good album, I already knew Pt. 1 of the title track going in. Really good indie/psychedelic vibes. Found a new song that I like in Do You Realize. Solid album that I liked about as much as I thought I would
The three songs I already knew (Fight Test, YBTPR1, Do You Realize) are all great twee indie rock. The rest of the album doesn’t do much for me, an interesting thematic concept but it never gets fully fleshed out, a lot of the other tracks are forgettable. The bass-forwardness gets to be a little much in the instrumental track
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots has some genuinely beautiful moments and a great vibe, especially on songs like “Do You Realize??” and “Fight Test". The whole robot concept is fun, and the sound is warm and trippy, but a lot of the tracks blur together and don’t stick with you the way the highlights do, so it ends up being a solid, enjoyable listen without feeling quite legendary to me.
quite enjoyed having this on while working, but can't say it would take the foreground for me
Creative and charming at its best, but a bit hit-and-miss for me. When it works it’s warm and catchy but some tracks wander too far into experimental, self-indulgent territory. Interesting and memorable, just not something I was into all the way through.
It wasn't my style tbh
Is it good, yes. Do I want to buy it, no. So a 3 for me
I was waiting for this to be a masterpiece, but it lost me in the second half. Fight Test was great, and I'd already heard Do You Realize before, the rest was just alright.
I used to say I loved this album without having really listened to it. A fine listen but I was tired of the production by "its summertime" Enjoyed Yoshimi pt. 2 I had forgiven you for tricking me again / but I have been tricked again / into forgiving you - was an enjoyable little line
Really tried to like it, some of the songs were fun but i just couldn’t get into it. Too glorpy perhaps
I’m confused on how I feel about this so I’m just gonna go neutral
Enjoyable but nothing that really got me going.
interessante
Good album kinda made me feel nostalgic
Rock und teils Electro ..nicht so meins
It has some amazing songs, but I just couldn't get into it overall
Do You Realize?? is a masterpiece, the rest of the album is pretty bland overall. Space rock plus beats. Yoshimi instrumental was a snoozer. 2.5, but rounding up for DYR In reality I probably only need the Do You Realize?? single.
I like it kinda
Felt like floating on a cloud
It was okay, didn’t really stand out to me one way or another.
very spacey, space battle, galloping in space.
Based on whether I was compelled to listen all the way through
I liked this album, which makes sense as I’m in to concept albums that sound interesting. It’s melancholic and bittersweet feeling, and while not all the songs were complete bangers for me, overall I rate this album as pretty good.
Chill I like it a little bit too much electronic i guess? Felt more instrumental to me wish there were more songs like Yoshimi Pt.1 7.45/10 3/5
Thought I'd like this more than I did
172 Lo empecé a escuchar tantas veces que spotify piensa que es un disco que me gustó muchísimo y lo agregó a mi lista de On repeat. Suena a algo que le habría gustado a mi versión del 2010 con esa onda media indie electrónica tierna.
It was such a fun story
I had HUGE expectations heading into this listen -- I feel like this album has become somewhat of a cult classic. I liked it. But I guess I don't understand all of the hype. All of the electronic sound effects take a toll after a while, and for as creative as it is, it sort of blends together in my mind. The lyrics are fantastic, I'm not a huge fan of the vocals, but at the end of the day, I think it's just a generally good collection. That's (surprisingly) about all I have to say. Fave tracks: - Fight Test - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2 - In the Morning of the Magicians - Are You a Hypnotist?? - It's Summertime - Do You Realize?? - Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)
I'd like the story aspect to this album, and it was kinda fun to vibe with, but it definitely got old after a while. It wasn't bad, but just wasn't my favorite. Actual rating...2.75 Liked Songs: "Fight Test" , "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1" , "In the Morning of the Magicians" , "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" , "Are You a Hypnotist??" , "It's Summertime" , "Do You Realize??"
Very interesting, I can see myself listening to some of the songs on this record on a hot summer night.
Listenable; variable.
Something about this feels right after watching Evangelion for the first time.
Not my fav even though I love Yoshimi Battles. Leas vocal and more instrumental than I normally go for but very cohesive album and a lot of chord carry-over btwn songs.
Sits somewhere between folk and 70s sci fi soundtrack. Like Cat Stevens had a baby with Barbarella
6 - AVERAGE
Remembered Do You Realize, but otherwise just not my jam
The great songs are amazing. The rest is ho hum.
I don't know how I should feel, I'm not much of a connoisseur, hehe.
Give the bass player a raise but fuck off with the weak hipster vocals
I didn't dislike this, but I wouldn't go so far to say that I liked it a lot either. Well made music, but kind of boring. It would be good music for a day when you're feeling blue and just stay inside because it's raining. I did recognize "Do You Realize?" from movies/commercials. I'm starting to realize (get it?) that a lot of albums like this that I don't like or am indifferent about are albums that a lot of people really like. No judgement in that, but I'm realizing (eh? eh?) I have different tastes in music than the masses. ...and that makes me happy that I'm not just another mindless drone.
it’s as if it was made for when you’re driving in the summer with your windows down
2.91/5 Stars Top Songs: Do You Realise, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots pt 1, One More Robot,
It’s really weird that this is as well-regarded as it is, as it’s a comparatively weak record compared to the four? five? records that preceded it.
Funky and weird but fun, some of the lyrics hit hard and some are odd. Overall really enjoyed it, not my favourite but i porbbaly will be coming back to it
Production is fantastic completely a new type of music for me. Vocal on the other hand is not my thing
Fine listen, but the Yoshimi battling songs were a bit meh for me. Occasionally reminded me of Radiohead, in way where I'd feel like listening to them instead.
Funny song titles, overall good vibes, not my fave. 5/10
i liked it, different vibes from the different songs so it was interesting because it was really diverse. kind of album I need to listen again
cool
Enjoyed this more than i expected
I liked this better the first time around but my shorty and I had the same favorite song this listen and I think that will be a rarity so I gave this a free extra star.
Eh
Flaming Lips is not the type of band to use as driving music or when you're on the go. they lend themselves to chilling out at home, with a drink, and vibing just to the music (Mercury Rev is a similar band like them). Yoshimi is one of their best albums. i particularly like the title track (part 1), Fight Test, and Do You Realize.
I never would have guessed that out of all the albums we listened to so far, THIS would be the first one that I own. I find this album very interesting and complex. The writing style is so bizarre. My only negative with this album is it starts to feel repetitive towards the second half, and the slow songs all start to sound the same. Their follow up album At War With the Mystics corrects this problem and allows for an absolute fantastic album. I hope that is in the list as well. Fight Test and Do You Realize are the two best songs.
Never heard of them. Expections low. Better than i thought.
This is great music, but it's just not for me. A lot of layers, a lot of different sounds, expertly woven together. Just didn't connect with it. Glad I listened, probably won't listen again.
I had hear some of the songs before and have seen them live twice at Riot Fest. They put on a good show, and this is a good album, it just isn't my particular cup of tea. I enjoyed a listen well enough, but don't see myself queue it up again at anytime in the near future.
Not a standout for me
There were some very beautiful moments on this album. I could see myself loving it with multiple listens. Seems to have thoughtful lyrics as well. I like the idea of a sci-fi rock opera more than any time I've heard it executed, but I love the attempt.
this album told a fun story, it just wasn’t necessary my taste in music. I liked the first half of the album way more than the last half.
An album supposedly about something as exciting as battling pink robots shouldn't be putting me to sleep. SO WHY DID IT PUT ME TO SLEEP?!?! I think it's because it's *gasp* boring!
That was nice.
The Flaming Lips er best live.
Genere: Neo-psychedelia, Space Rock, dream pop, acid rock Anno: 2002 Curiosità:
i had not listened to this in full since i was probably 13 or 14 and frankly expected it to be really stupid because the title track (and ‘do you realize??’) are the only songs that i remember and those are kind of goofy…but i found this really pleasant to listen to! not sure that i would return to it in any kind of hurry but i enjoyed it. and ‘do you realize??’ still kinda makes me verklempt, so…
3.5 good jams
This is such a pretty album. It's built for summer. A smooth sound with good lyrics are always a nice touch. The little audio bits like bird calls and synth sounds really give it a warm vibe. This reminds me in someways to the Joni Mitchell album I just listened to. I wonder if 1001 albums has a bias to a certain type of sound? I guess I'll find out. Haha. Do you realize?? is such an epic track. This is a pretty album.
Well crafted songs, interesting electronic elements and standout bass.
Interesting, didn't dislike it, but nothing stuck out to me to save. Decent album
I really liked this album when it came out. It felt very much of the time. Sadly, it hasn't aged particularly well, with Wayne Coyne's vocals being the worst part. I like my share of 'weird' singers, but his nasally twang just doesn't help, especially over the course of a full record. I'll happily give it a 3 for the title track, In the Morning of the Magicians, and Do You Realize??
I suppose this is the best Flaming Lips album, but also the bar for “best Flaming Lips album is not very high for me. A band for guys my age to discover at a formative age and absolutely love, and then watch them tumble down the rankings. I do think Do You Realize is a really nice song but would probably be better performed by almost any other band. Fight Test is good, even performed by the Flaming Lips.
The opening four song stretch is an incredible ride, but the back-half slows down considerably, kind of inconsistent outside of the obvious-but-still-beautiful Do You Realize. A fun concept and strong out the gate, but ultimately a bit lost in the end.
I enjoyed the vastness of this, felt like the album cover captured that feeling well. Definitely in my wheelhouse but for some reason I don't feel like it grabbed me entirely. Maybe needs a second listen to appreciate fully. 3.5
Very chill listening experience. First half of album failed to hook me but second have was a pleasant listen.
I used to adore this concept album but maybe I'm a little more jaded and I don't appreciate the dreaminess here as much.
Muy buen nombre de grupo y de disco. Portada espectacular. Ojalá me encantasen, pero solo me parecen ok
I don't hate this. But it's absolutely Radiohead-music for Ed Sheeran fans
The Flaming Lips are weird band that has been releasing music since the 80s (didn't know they been around that long)! With over 30 albums, I should have had more exposure but really only know their top hit "Do You Realize??" and the Christmas song that gets annual play (classic). I did catch them live at Coachella one year and they had about 50 Santas on stage in the middle of Spring...like I said, weird band. Yoshimi started great but kinda slowed down and lost a bit after the first few songs. Not bad overall though. I will dig in to some more of The Burning Smackers at some point. 2.6 for battling those pink robots.
I always wanted to listen to this album but for some reason never pulled the trigger. Glad I got the excuse I needed to give it a listen. I knew the title track but not confident I had any prior exposure to the remainder of the album. Wayne Coyne and company bring a pretty nice fantastical album to life. It's got a lot of the electronic creativity they are known for without being too weird to alienate listeners like some of their other work does. Pretty solid throughout. Good entry point for any newcomers to The Flaming Lips. Glad to check the box, will probably come back to it at some point in the future. 3.15 stars
Interesting and quirky. Surprisingly pleasant and fun in the background.
I really did enjoy much of this.
Generally enjoyed this. Some songs stronger than others and I liked the mix of genres in certain places.
I had heard of The Flaming Lips, and was not expecting this. From the band's decription, I thought of something more in the vibe of Tame Impala (don't even know if this makes sense, lol). It sounded kind of mid to me, to my tastes at least. Love the ocncept of the album, and the stelist is cohesive, but it did not click to me. Not bad at all, but not something I see myself revisiting.
Reminds me of lots of other music. Beck comes to mind, Eels, the Beatles. But also newer music like Tame Impala. It's not bad, but I don't like it very much. Especially the singing is weak.
Weird album, lot of random sounds reminiscent of “Yes”
Pretty variable. Enjoyable in parts, random noise in others.
I thought it would be better. A bit weird at times and to "artsy"
