Reviews (page 11 of 14)
This is #day46 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... in a parallel universe, Tame Impala has gone Pink Floyd, creating a concept album full to the brim with psychedelic noises and sounds, telling a story about A Girl, the Pink Robot Battler... The girl in question happens to be the drummer for a Japanese noise rock band, Boredoms, and is credited among the additional personnel for the album creation. Well, at least this way I learned about Japanoise (the term denoting the noise music scene of Japan). It was quite an enjoyable listen, though. But, as I doubt I'd be returning to this music anytime soon, this is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day47.
Chill good psychedelic album. Should probably listen to it more.
I found this one more tolerable than the other album of theirs. I still would not seek out to listen to this again but I did not dislike it. Instruments were well played, but vocals are meh.
I'm absolutely shocked i'm doing this but I'm giving this a 3. At first I was thinking this was a 2 at best but I think that was mostly because I really didn't like The Soft Bulletin. This I liked a whole lot more. The only thing holding this album back from a 4 or even a 5 is the fact that Wayne Coyne cannot sing. He always sounds out of tune. It sucks. Seriously if almost anyone else had been doing the vocals (besides Bob Dylan) I would have had no problem giving this a 4 maybe even a 5. But instead we have dear old Wayne yodeling away for 47 minutes. Loved the ethereal feel, the psychedelic feel, the storyline (especially at the beginning that was fun), and way they kind of switched between serious and kinda silly with the lyrics. Great album, shame that their frontman can't sing.
Pretty solid, some of the songs meander a bit but good to be exposed to them
It’s aight
A few good songs, but a bit boring too. It gets an extra star for do you realise
Decent background music.
10/10 for fun
Generous 3 Some of these songs were pretty cool but overall bored
Mellow yellow vines, but the tunes were not bad
Will have to listen again
Soothing music but felt similar to Radiohead at times
A couple songs I already had saved that I really loved, the rest was a little out there for me.
Ok, time for me to perform a U-turn. Last week I said I don’t like musicals / rock operas as the vocals seem crowbarred in to tell the story. Well, this is a bit of an exception! The songs transcend the need to enjoy the story. I’m not sure Japanese-anime-robots-meaning of life-stories are my thing at all so I’ll swerve the musical. This album is really good. Lovely melodies and harmonies. Quirky and interesting. A very high 3 stars.
Rating: 7/10 Very good album overall, but can't help to feel a bit disappointed. The concept, instrumentation, and genuine nature of this album are so unique but the execution is severely lacking on the second half, which feels incredibly boring and dull compared to the first half. Favorite songs: Fight Test, One More Robot, Part 1, In the Morning of the Magicians, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell. Worst song: Part 2.
Pop psicodélico. Ni fu ni fa.
I really liked "Do You Realize".
had 'do you realize' saved before listening to this, was expecting a 4 but it let me down a little bit...
I love "Do you Realize??" <33
spannende reise durch verschiedene atmosphärische klangbilder.
A classic. I enjoy the music but not a huge fan of the band.
Not the first time or second for that matter that I've tried to get into this album. Maybe third times the charm? Nope. I still don't get the hype. Still it's not bad but I don't see the greatness.
Still can't believe they ripped off Cat Stevens. A good album nevertheless.
This a group who I have tried to get into a few times. They produce some good songs but a lot of what I hear is a bit meh. I actually bought this album in a charity shop recently but after copying it I can’t say I’ve listened to it completely until today. I can understand why it’s on the list as it is very different but not in a way which floats my boat. Don’t hate it and glad it’s in my collection for random occasional plays but that’s it. 3/5 19/8/24
Meh
Feels like a 3 to me.
Quite enjoyed this, 3*
Il sito mi aveva già dato un album dei flaming lips che è uno dei miei preferiti. Mi aspettavo un'esperienza simile ma non regge il confronto. Comunque piacevole
I knew Flaming Lips was a band. That was the extent of what I knew about them. LOVED Fight Test and I wanted to give it bonus points for the Yusuf Islam sample, but Coyne's weak lie about using Father and Son is off-putting. Nothing else on the record really got near that song for me. Don't really love the Yoshimi Battles the Pick Robots with the screeching, nor how repetitive it is. I am also reminded of Monae's ArchAndroid (which is obv. 8 year's later). I like Monae better.
Diferente, viajado, alternativo e gostoso. Ouviria de novo
Nothing special..but pleasant enough
Mixed for me. A couple of these pieces I LOVED and have listened to several times already — Do You Realize?, Are You a Hypnotist?, and It's Summertime are the exact kind of moody, dreamy thing that I like. But a lot of the others were too ballad-y for my taste, and some outrightly discordant and unpleasant to listen to. But I'm really pleased to have discovered the ones I do like, and I'll listen to The Soft Bulletin soon.
Really loved this, such great storytelling and inspiring. 7.8/10
Yoshimi and Do You Realize are fantastic. Most of the Flaming Lips stuff is so weird. This is no exception. I saw them live in my early 20s and thought it was one of the strangest shows I have ever seen.
Cool music. The production keeps my interest. Like it a lot.
Alright, but not as good as I remember.
It's pretty good, I liked its diversity and the instrumentation. I'd listened to a few tracks from it before and was familiar with Do You Realize. Would listen again.
It's okay. 3/5
Lots of interesting sounds and vibes here. A little self-absorbed in that way only indie rock can be, but it has some good melodies, some nice bass, and some cool ideas. Best song: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1
gechillter elektropop 3/5
Some great songs, but not all good songs.
Never heard this before. Surprised I liked it considering how much I disliked The Soft Bulletin, their release prior to this one. Strange but engaging. It will likely take a few more listens to finalize a rating, but giving it a 3.
I know of the Flaming Lips, but I don’t know the Flaming Lips. Is this some kind of concept album, they made of video fame inspired music? The title tracks sound like the inspiration for My Singing Monsters It’s not bad, but probably not something I’ll go looking for again.
while i have dismissed the flaming lips in the past as being too weird, i will admit that this album has grown on me over time. it’s hard to explain, but this album has a certain groove to it, the rhythm section really cooks in a way that you wouldn’t necessarily expect with this type of music. and while i still admit that wayne coyne’s vocals and lyrics are an acquired taste and he is beyond weird, the band in a live setting is quite the spectacle. highlights: “in the morning of the magicians” “ego tripping at the gates of hell” “do you realize??”
The second album on this list from The Flaming Lips doesn't quite reach the heights of the former. Standouts include Yoshimi Fights The Pink Robots and Are You A Hypnotist.
3.5/5
I don’t know what I expected The Flaming Lips to sound like but it wasn’t really this. Vocalist much whinier than I expected. It was fine, but nothing particularly special.
Hadn’t heard this before- not bad, but probably wouldn’t listen again.
This album is not bad. It's quite good, and has a couple stone-cold classics, though as a millenial of a certain age it's a bit ubiquitous and overexposed; and the Lips' continued milking of it and their back catalog mars my understanding of it as Essential and not simply A Good Thing We Can All Agree is Good. I bought The Soft Bulletin (more deserving of its spot on this list) and Transmissions From the Satellite Heart. I went to War With the Mystics and tried to herald Embryonic as a posible magnum opus (like many magnum opi, it's a good single album bulked out into an interminable double album); I have synced up Zaireeka and listened to the demos on that polka-dot toilet album. The Flaming Lips are a garage act which leveled up with a more refined sound, only to dash themselves upon the rocks of the festival circuit and have remained there, in a hermetically sealed mylar globe walking atop the audience in an all-too-literal metaphor. I like them! They're overrated!
I have this one. Interesting album.
3*, last track saved it.
Hella weird journey this takes you on. I respect the ambition that you can. Hear in this album, but it was certainly just a concept album. It ended up being quite monotonous, and was rough around the edges. Regardless of that, i enjoyed the vibes and the peculiar journey it gave
Funky No words only vibes Eh
An enjoyable quirky and melodic album
I like their music, but Wayne Coyne's voice annoys the shit out of me. So I can't take too much.
Not really my style, the lyrics were nice, but the vocals were not something I expect to replay often
There are some good tracks in this but not more than a good listening experience overall
Started out rougher than I remember? Last half of the album is better. Felt like I was in a 90s movie
Good
Eclectic, weird, easy listening, but nothing that really grabs my attention.
Fight Test // 3.5/5
Great album. Solid three and a half stars, Hope Yoshimi wins at the end.
Solid
I've listened to this countless times since it came out, but it's been a while. I do occasionally get the title track stuck in my head. I have a memory of listening to this on the bus on the way to class and thinking that a woman was actually screaming during Yoshimi Pt. 2. The blood curdling scream was very realistic and scared the shit out of me because I thought I was going to turn around and see some scarring shit. I like this album alright. Do You Realize?? is still a great love song. Title track is good. There's some catchy stuff in here. That said, I think it's kinda muddy at some points and I just want to skip a few tracks. Every one of these reviews eventually turns into me indirectly critiquing the album itself by questioning the spirit of the list. I really think a lot of albums edge their way onto this enormous list by having a couple of good songs. I was hoping to be introduced to some albums that are good from start to finish, but I think at least half so far have been questionable in that regard. I could have done without listening to this album as a whole again. I think even back in the day I didn't love this one start to finish. These ethereal psych albums end up sounding so self-indulgent to me. This is Dark Side for Millennials - and that's not a high compliment coming from me. This gets a soft 3 only because I can't give it a 2.5.
Liked the first track then it went a bit funny but still quite enjoyed. 5/10.
I really want to like this album for the concept alone, but I didn't really enjoy the music. Well, at least it is memorable.
I've never owned a Flaming Lips album, but I've always liked what I've heard from them. I definitely like some of the groups they've influenced. This album is good. It doesn't grab me by the ears and kick me in the crotch, but it's worthy of a listen every now and again. I am impressed with the size of their catalog, and I will be giving it all a listen. All We Have is Now is a favorite on here.
I actually liked "She Don't Use Jelly" when it first came out, but I've been burned too often before by that one single that was good while the rest of the album sucked . . . so I stuck to my rule that I have to like at least two songs I've heard on an album before purchasing it, and I haven't heard another song. So my love for The Flaming Lips was delayed until I was in Wax N' Facts in Little Five Points and asked if they had any freebies while I was checking out (do this at Criminal Records too!); I got some stickers and a demo tape where one side was Cibo Matto and the other side contained narrated excerpts from The Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin." I couldn't believe the lush and psychedelic sounds I was hearing on the drive home! I listened to it over and over again and made it mission to return to the music store and pick it up. I've been a huge fan of theirs ever since, seeing them live numerous times and purchasing almost their entire catalogue (which is quite the undertaking at 16 albums where many contained maxi-single EPs with additional songs); they were one of the main reasons I flew to Coachella in 2004, and subsequently got to see the first time Wayne tested his "Space Bubble" walk-out over the audience which has since become a live staple. It's nice to have an American band on my list of favorite artists when so many others are from England. After getting familiar with their work before and since, I see The Soft Bulletin (and its experimental predecessor Zaireeka) as beginning the "third wave" of The Flaming Lips with a synthy noise rock three piece incarnation of the group, and with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots comfortably surfing smack in the middle of its wake. Much of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots seems like they wanted to quickly capitalize on the success of the critically acclaimed (and better) The Soft Bulletin. Compared to their other albums, it seems a bit more spoon-fed to a wider audience as if really striving to be more commercially acceptable while staying true to what they do. "Fight Test" establishes this approach right out of the gate; it is a conventional pop song that uses unconventional sounds. The same is true for the title track. There is still some experimentation on the album, but it seems a little unfocused; noodling about for the sake of it vs having something to say. "Do You Realize??" is the crossover here, where everything is gelling correctly: the writing is good, the soundscape is lush, and the drum beat keeps shifting around a bit but continually grooves. The liner notes on "It's Summertime" are noteworthy. They tell of their translator on their Japanese tour, Yoshimi (not directly the character from the album, but they took the name). Some time after returning to the States, they hear of her being sick or possibly dying or dead; with the distance and language issues, it took a couple of months to get the facts correct that she had passed. Described as a 'slow devastation' as the news was foreboding but slow coming, Wayne writes that he looked outside and noticed the flowers in bloom, the bee's buzzing about, all of these signs of life; he acknowledged the sad weight of death but also that life continues and thrives. I wish the song conveyed this more, as it adds meat to the bones of an otherwise simple lyric. I believe some of their weaker songs are on this album. "Are You A Hypnotist??" has a great chorus, but the verses are lacking. Though not favorites, the opening lines of "In the Morning of the Magicians" and the bass line of "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell" replay in my head randomly over the years. They have so many more albums that are better from start to finish, but this project is not about where an album fits into one's discography as a whole; it is to take each album at face value. I sure hope they have more deserving Flaming Lips albums or 2 on this list, but for this one, it's a 3.
Mellow, muted, Burt Bacharach melodies combine with glitchy trip hop beats, laser zorps and robot farts. Soft, yearning, sad boi. Cinematic and orchestral, retro-futuristic. Could be the score to a film…a Wes Anderson film where the robots are evil-natured but also wear hand-knitted hats made from the fleece of alpacas gently raised on a lunar pasture. I am surprised this came out in 2002. My mind can't seem to work it into my memories of that timeline; I would have guessed closer to 2008. 3.5
I have memories of driving around in a 1990 Honda Civic Wagon and listening to this album back around 2015/2016 or so. It was my first time really giving Flaming Lips a good listen. I don't think I have listened to this album much since then, so it was cool to give it a listen again. There is a lot of emotion and introspection feel on this one. Its the only Flaming Lips album I've ever really listened to, so I don't know how the others sound, but I'll have to check them out. Wayne Coyne has a sort of melancholy sounding voice that goes well over some really interesting song structure. I like the combination of psychedelic sounds over hip hop sounding beats. It brings to mind Tame Impala and Temples on some of their later stuff. I'll be giving other albums a listen.
6/10
veit ekki en ætli þetta eigi ekki skilið 3 stjörnur
Vocals rely a little bit on a resemblance to Neil Young. Some novel rhythmic passages and the drums are up in the mix which I like. In fact the production of this album is interesting throughout. It takes risks. There is a definite early to mid 2000s alternative rock sound that this fits in with. Like Arcade Fire, maybe Interpol, etc I mean it’s not unpleasant , just a wispy psychedelia that I won’t remember well tomorrow. Floydian spaciness in Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon
It's something I'd probably never listen to again. I do find some of the experimentation on it to be really fun. The vocal melodies are interesting enough that I want to pay attention. I don't hate it, but it does not rock and its seems wildly incohesive
Props for executing a solid concept album. I do like a lot of the instrumentals and there’s some solid emotional beats. Couldn’t really take it seriously front to back as 🗣️🗣️ITD BE TRAGIC IF THOSE EVIL ROBOTS WIN🗣️🗣️ is mad corny im so sorry
I have long felt that Do You Realize?? is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Outside that and Yoshimi, I don’t really love a ton of the album, but I find it serviceable. I love the high whispy vocals and dreamy production of the album.
No pas mal...
There are some truly good moments and songs, but times on this album that I really disliked... One of the songs had a woman start screeching... and I just hit skip. Like nails on a chalkboard.
Clairement à réécouter, ya de quoi la-dedans.
Heard a couple of FLs albums now and they are interesting sounding but I wouldn’t revisit them.
I feel like I should have liked this more than I did. They are way too mellow and chill to dislike. But something just didn’t click for me.
Pretty good.
If Middle School boys got together to create an album, this would be it!
Better than radiohead but that isn't saying much.
First track was great. Easy to listen to but again, not many I’d race to listen to again.
Representative of the indie rock sound of the 2000s
I know I’m supposed to love this album. I dig other Flaming Lips stuff! Clouds Taste Metallic? Fantastic! But this one has never worked for me. It always feels too gimmicky and uneven. Maybe it’s my general distaste for concept albums, I don’t know. Anyway I recognize this is a massively popular album, it’s just not for me.
Best song: Yoshimo Battles the pink robots pt 1 Vibes: drum machine white psychedelic Themes: robots
Es lo que le recomendaría a alguien que le gusta Gorillaz pero más tranqui. Esta muy bien para 2002. Hoy día ya le dieron demasiada rosca a este estilio...
It was definitely a new experience for me since I don‘t usually listen to this genre/type of music. But it wasn‘t bad. Felt a bit like being on another planet at times. I liked the second half a bit better than the first.
2024-04-24...
Quirky. Other worldly. Surreal. Psychadelic. Interesting themes. Science Fiction rock? Interesting.
Interesting, may require a re-listen. Knew the hit.
Some solid tunes and Melodie’s here
I kind of liked it! 3 stars
Not bad, a slight hint of having heard a lot of the tracks before though
They had me at the beginning and then it kind of fizzled. 3.
This album seemed to drag on.
- sounds like Radiohead but less edgy - a fun journey that had plenty of cool sounds - solid 3.5
- this was a much more enjoyable album for me - I like the concept over the first few songs - Do You Realize?? is a solid song -3.5
Il sito mi aveva già dato un album dei flaming lips che è uno dei miei preferiti. Mi aspettavo un’esperienza simile ma non regge il confronto. Comunque piacevole
This was an interesting one. I think I liked it. I’m not sure. I know I need to listen to this one multiple times to get it but not sure I will. Instead I will likely listen to some piece of crap this app generates tomorrow morning. Maybe another obscure moods and tones album.
Really enjoyed this. Listened a number of times. Approaching a 4, but not quite there. Yet. 3.95
Heard this before. Think this album is a bit weird as the songs that I like, I really like, but the others just don't do it for me. Maybe the ones I don't like would grow on me with a few more relistens. Fav songs: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Do You Realize??, Fight Test
I used to adore this album in my early 20’s and as time’s gone on, that love is still there however slightly diminished. The production is spunky and bright, the performances are snappy and assured, but something about the end product leaves me a little dry and I can’t put my finger on it. Still an album that should be considered essential listening to any music fan.
Weirdly nice album. Was surprised but not put off by it. All good musician. Production leaves some to be desired. 3 stars.
3.5/5
I like The Flaming Lips, but I wish their music was a little less... hippie-esque, and went a little harder. You can hear tinges of it in "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (Part 2)", but if they could just ... BOOM! That's what they need. They remind me a bit of Yes music, but Yes has more of a ROCK sound to it. Even the etherealness to "And You And I" has a bombast to it. "Do You Realize??" seems to be going for that, but it's all one note, and there's nothing more meaty behind it for me. Top tracks: "Do You Realize??" "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (Part 2)"
I am very much aware of this album but have never listened to it beyond the title track (part 1) and Do You Realize. The vocals almost remind me of Band of Horses but this is about 5 years before those guys hit. The combo of electronica and stripped down guitars/bass and drums? Not sure how I feel. At one level, it seems like typical early 2000's fare as I can think of a few other rock bands who went this direction with drum tracks and extra synth layers to add to the sound. At another level, it's a little ahead of it's time as this whole electronica and rock combo became a big thing by the end of the decade. And I don't really love that genre. So I guess some kudos for being pioneers (I may be wrong about that) but it was a bit meh for me in terms of sound. Not going back for more, and it doesn't make me want to seek out their earlier or later work.
I think I prefer the Soft Bulletin but this is good psych indie fun stuff.
Listened before. It's not bad
good, but with overwhelming "look at me, I'm so quirky" vibes. Headphones up high, doing dishes, enjoyable. the songs never end. just like the dishes. Pt. 2 could use less piercing screams. had too skip.
kinda weird, but good weird.
The band was really good! Not exactly what I usually listen to, but I enjoyed it and would listen more!
i’ve heard such good things about this album for so long that i automatically thought i was going to really dig it. and while i thought it was pretty good, i didn’t connect with it the way i thought i would. very unexpectedly acoustic? i was surprised by that but i guess that’s my fault lol. actually reminded me a lot of tame impala. certainly ahead of it’s time. i preferred when the album leaned more into the electronic rock stuff, like part 2 of the title track. super cool instrumental. honestly i’m not sure about my rating… feeling more of a 3.5
I almost wish this leaned further into being a bit stranger. They are playing around with a bit of sound work and the title and art makes it feel like it could be a concept album but it doesn't really lean in. Do You Realize shows a bit of an ability to get grander and have a lot going on. I don't dislike this album but I almost wish they were doing a collab with someone more out there.
The opening track cadence made me think of Cat Steven's Father and Son. Okay, saw in the wiki that I was right. Great mixing. Fun stuff, but a lot of it just blends into one sound. I get that it's a bit over played but I do like Do You Realize, it gets stuck in my head. There are some strong bits but the bland outweighs them.
Pretty fun album! Was cleaning my bathroom to it and made the time fly. Favorite track is Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell. Did not add to Spotify library.
Lots of cool songs. A couple of them literally sounded like someone was shitting in my ears Would not listen to whole album again
Fun and sort of odd album all around. I really enjoyed the first half of this album, but it started to slog a bit toward the second half until the closing track. This album is at its best when its weird and energetic. Highlights: Fight Test Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt.1 In The Morning of Magicians Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell
Never heard this album before but really enjoyed it. 3.95 So close.
This album started off pretty great but I felt like a lot of tracks afterwards were not my thing.
I don’t think my mom liked this bc she asked to listen to the news like 1 song after the Radiohead album ended, I didn’t like the screamy song at all. Most of this was fine tho, some songs I’d give like a 7.5 or 8/10. Overall I think the flaming lips were pretty adventurous w the sounds they tried and not all of them sounded amazing and the ones that sounded good weren’t great. Overall mid ca->pa rating #3
Pretty interesting sometimes but not consistently so. I particularly liked the titular songs. 7/10
More like 3,5
Somehow psychedelic.
Strano?
Hee
Grew on me the more I listened, but didn’t really “grab” me. Maybe because I’m generally not a science fiction fan and this was a sci-fi based concept album.
Very relaxed vibe but there isn’t much creativity.
decent. it was kind of relaxing i fell asleep to it 😭 3/5
Mellow.. kinda pretty.. I'm in a mellow mood so here ya go.. 3 stars
Original for indie pop but just not my thing
I thought maybe I’d turned a corner with The Flaming Lips because I liked The Soft Bulletin so much. But alas, I’m reminded why I really don’t care for them. I admit I liked listening to this album more than when I first heard it years ago, but there’s so much here that’s annoying and try hard. “Fight Test” and “Do You Realize??” are the best songs, but I’ve come around to “Yoshimi Part 1” a bit too. I totally understand why this album is on this list, but I prefer The Soft Bulletin even more after listening to this.
if oliver age 24 made vegan sploinky music, not something i'll come back to but i enjoyed it
Summary: Radiohead like album. Dabbles in some rock with electronic that works decently well. Some songs don't do too much, whilst others do the right amount of *enough*. I only wish that some of these broke out into a faster tempo, or just a more advantages style. Fight Test: 8.5. Very nice instrumental and vocals. Mixture of drums and weird computer bewms work very well. Catchy. Transitions into next song, but somewhat poorly? One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21: 9. Beautiful outro. Bass throughout the song in the right ear is stellar. The distorted piano(?) gives those portions a cool, creepy vibe. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1: 7.5. Fun goofy track about a girl fighting robots. Lyrics are playful with a nice beat behind it. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2: 6/10. Transitions are weird fadeouts on this album. I think they'd flow super smoothly if they didn't! Besides the dying rat sounds it's a nice instrumental. Drums are killer on this album so far. In the Morning of the Magicians: 7.5. Speaking of better transitions, this song actually faded in properly. Zoned out for most of it, but I did enjoy the instrumental on this. Once again the drums sound really nice. Just a good long song to space out on. Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell: 7. Nothing crazy. Bass line is catchy. Mixture of acoustic guitar, piano, flute, and electronic whatnots are a nice combo. Are You a Hypnotist??: 6.5. The electronic bits remind me of stuff from les claypool lennon delirium. Fine track. Somewhat slow, and doesn't do much I guess? Once again the drums are a nice standout. It's Summertime: 5.5. Nothing note worthy. Twas fine. Do You Realize??: 6. Strange mix of your standard rock(?) and gospel?? I only say gospel cause of the choir esque backing vocals. Liked the lyrics. Instruments are take it or leave it territory. Not sure why its the most played song. All We Have Is Now: 7.5. A nice slow somber tune. Air compressor sound goes hard Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia): 7. Feels like a Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 2, Pt. 2. Bringing back the dying rat. Trumpets sound nice.
- Fun sound in general, though it does get somewhat same-y after awhile. A couple of tracks drag. - Ears perked up when "In the Morning of the Magicians" started. Like much of this one, but it is the only one that teuly catches my attention.
Not as good as I remember it being.
laid back, pop electronic.
Modern prog, I guess it's good if you are into that stuff
Do you realize this album is still pretty good??
Look it's much more tolerable than other Flaming Lips projects, infact there are some pretty great songs on here. But I still cannot stand Coyne's vocals, he really does fill me with rage and it's annoying because I might have even enjoyed this album if anyone else was singing. Fav track: Fight test 2.5/5
Relatively didn't mind this album but also didn't care about it. Kind of went in anticipating The Flaming Lips to make me mad but they didn't. The annoying psyche concept vibe is not foregrounded too much. Two and a half. Fave track: One More Robot / Sympathy 3000-21
Some good tunes, but doesn't always hit the spot
yoshimi battles the pink robots part one is an all time banger. this probably more of 3.5 than 3 could i write poetry to this? y
3.5 There was a time when this would have been a 5 for me, but for some reason I've enjoyed it less as time goes on.
Well produced and great songwriting, but not my bag.
This is a great example of how one can recognize important, ground-breaking, and/or impressive art but not actually enjoy it as consumer of art.
Good
I think I have had Flaming Lips shoved down my throat too much but I do appreciate this album.
This did not sound how I thought it was going to literally at all but I still like it. "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots pt. 1" is kind of ass. FINAL THOUGHTS: It is just a good alt rock album. Nothing else to really say.
Yet another band that I've never taken the time to listen to, so I'm glad this finally happened. Wow...it took me a minute to get used to their style and the sound, but this was also a sonic, feel-good journey. So many different sounds, textures, and beats. I enjoyed it quite a bit even though there are a few songs I wasn't too crazy about. Favorite tracks: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1, Yoshimi Battles the Robots, Pt. 2, In the Morning of the Magicians, Do You Realize??, Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon.
Psykedeliskt Lättsamt Inte riktigt min grej, men helt OK Mycket akustisk gitarr Påminner en del om tidiga Coldplay
Alternativ rock som går att ha på i bakgrunden när man gör något. 6/10.
Good
Ihan mielenkiintoinen 3/5
Oh what a lot of fun this is. Quite darn enjoyable. I've saved it for future playing. It's high three stars as a discovery. Let's see if it gets a to 4 after more listening.
double yew
Album intéressant, certains passages sont très agréables d'écoute, d'autres partent un peu trop dans l'expérimental pour que j'y accroche...
OK.
I was never really on the Flaming Lips bandwagon although I remember them playing in OKC
i dig the wide eyed punk rock hippie vibe i just don’t dig the songs that much
This guy's voice still bugs me a bit, but I liked this record better than the last one we listened to The Soft Bulletin. I think this probably qualifies as a 'rock opera' and it's prob the best of those that we've had thus far - though it's no Pinkerton.
I liked this a lot more than I expected I would. Ethereal sound, did not listen to any of the lyrics tbh but it sounded like an interesting story lol.
The only Flaming Lips song I knew going into this was "She Don't Use Jelly", so this was a bit of a surprise. The opening track threw me as it reminded me of another song. It took me until half way through the song to figure out it was Cat Stevens. A quick google search confirmed my suspicions. I love the idea of a concept album involving robots, but this doesn't quite work as one, seeming to lose its way in the second half. All the tracks are pleasant enough, yet nothing really stands out to me. I can't help comparing this to other albums with similar concepts, like Act II - The Father of Death by the Protomen, and feeling a bit underwhelmed.
Need to give this another listen
Not my music
A trippy fun album that really gives meaning to the word "Alternative". I don't know if I've listened to the Flaming Lips before but maybe a single or two or on guitar hero I'm not sure. Either way, they are a unique group and I dug this sound. I'm not sure I'd listen again, but glad this exists and is on this list.
Okay, didn't really grab me, but I did recognize one song. Pretty good, but just background music in my mind
I remember having a cassette of the Flaming Lips in the 90s. This one is better imo. I really liked Do You Realize, Fight Test, and Yoshimi and the Robots. The other tracks were okay but nothing to get excited about. I did enjoy their sound and their quirky lyrics
some nice songs
I like - not love, but like.
It was ok but it didn’t blew my mind. I was hoping for more action.
Wasn't familiar with the Flaming lips other than Do you realize and she dont use jelly so I really wasnt sure what to expect. Maybe a more upbeat elecronic Radiohead vibe?
Better than I expected it to be
Very weird and makes you feel like high. It's "okay", but not really my taste.
At least in my initial hearing of the full album, the songs tends to be a bit too similar in sound to each other.
Fine
Highlights: Fight Test Do You Realize?? I didn't love this album, but I also didn't hate it. A couple of songs stood out to me and would be the ones I'm most likely to go back to. The singer was okay but he fit the mood and music they were going for.

Not even the more experimental tracks are interesting enough… just a big yawn.
Not outstanding, but I liked it, nice relaxed rock with some electronic vibes.
Enjoyable experimental rock album, not something you listen to every day but this is interesting.
Not a big Flaming Lips fan, Coyne gets on my nerves a bit, they go full electro here, some interesting even nice moments but really meh overall
really odd. certainly not my thing. i sense there was a story to it, but it didnt seem to click with me?
Liked the playing, not a big fan of the voice
Really much better than I expected! I did enjoy it.
Very Alternative … very mellow … very strange … but in a good way
Loved the beginning! I thought it slowed down a lot. I understand why this album is "good", but to me it had clear stronger songs and weaker songs. My preference towards faster chunkier music may be limiting me. Either way, I'm happy to have tried it out! Ben
In The Morning of The Magicians
I liked it at first. It got a little weirder the farther I got into the album. Some of the tracks felt like all they were were cymbal crashes and noise.
Couple of ok tracks
Fun but weird theme. Gets a bit repetitive at times. Enoyed, but wouldn't say it was amongst the best.
Relaxing background music
A fine slice of twee rock
I've not listened to this in 20 years so it was nic to revisit it. The singles stood out and I enjoyed the fun concept but I wouldn't be coming back for a relisten soon.
Nicht
A nice calm album , melancholy at times that's good for background music, one known song.
War net schlecht.
Never heard something like this! Probably would’nt again… Not my vibes. personal top3 in no order: All We Have Is Now It’s Summertime Do You Realize??
Irgendwie schon ziemlich gut. Mir gefallen die Vibes und ich würde es auch sicher nichmal anhören. Interessanter Sound! 6.7/10
It didn’t make me mad.
It was nice, a good change of a pace from my usual listening. Will I listen to again: 50%
An album for after work. Funky and weird, and I like it. Good beats and sound effects.
Some great bits some uninteresting bits
Bit low key and monotonous for me
Lots of great sounds that take you different places. Especially on the first two songs. “Yoshimi battles the pink robots” was kinda awful. Love Hate Album. Some songs I loved and some I hated. 6/10
This is one of those bands that I have heard the name and actually heard a couple songs but I could never tell you what they sound like. I still am not sure what their sound is. The lead singer sometimes has a nice voice and sometimes he pronounces word very strangely. I preferred the bits of instrumental over the more structured vocal sections. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this going in and I am unsure if I liked it going out. They killed a cat on the songs. 5/10
I was never quite in to Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and if I'm being honest have struggled to enjoy this album. It's clearly good, an excellent concept album, yet it just doesn't really evoke much in me. I don't think this is a fault of the band - and it is truly a beautiful, well-rounded album. But it's also just not really my cup of tea.
Kind of forgot about this one cos all I tend to gravitate towards is the Soft Bulletin. Then I listened to this and really enjoyed it. I should listen to it more often. I wish I could do half-stars cos I'd give this 3.5. I don't think it's a 4, but more than a 3.
An interesting album. So many people I know absolutely love it. I can never quite go as far as loving it. It's decent enough, but not lovable. Given its from the early 2000s that's actually the highest praise its possible to level toward it.
Later parts of album remind me of Gorillaz & Tame Impala (I am aware this is before them) Fav: One More Robot
Album 239 of 1001 The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Rating : 3 / 5 It was listenable. A little bit more electronic stuff than I remember them to be. The one line I remember from the album is "Do you realize that everybody you know is going to die someday". That can certainly be thought provoking, if you wish it to be. Falls right in the "meh" range.
pretty funky n trippy. some songs are a little too funky for me but i like some of them. pretty mellow
3/5 - This is another one of those indie albums that had i found it in high school, I probably would have really enjoyed it throughout the rest of my life. Unfortunately, I found it to be another mediocre indie album from the early 2000s. Fantastic but lost to time once many other incredible bands took the stage. Objectively good; subjectively, lacks uniqueness in its space.
That was a fun listen, and it definitely gets points for originality. It didn't quite get there for me upon first listen, but I might come back to this and see if I like it more the second time around. 3.5
Bit meh. Might be a grower
ok
Atmosfere suggestive a metà fra rock e elettronica ambient, l'album perde un po' dalla metà in poi, diventa meno suggestivo e più classico. Riascoltare sicuramente alcuni pezzi.
The Flaming Lips are best listened to at a concert. So much energy in the crowd and the band. This album is good, and the first one I heard or listened to, but...this is one of those albums you listen to once or twice then put away.
Ah yes, one of my favorite albums about death. I forgot how much I loved Fight Test but honestly, besides that song and Do You Realize I don’t feel like any of the other tracks stand out. Ah well.
Would listen again
3.5 stars. Solid electro space rock album. Strange yet inoffensive. The two standouts are the pt. 1 title track and "Do You Realize??".
Not a terrible album by any means, but just sort of felt middle of the road for my tastes. Nothing stood out but I wouldn't be miserable listening to it again. 2.5/5.
Never heard of the band or album before. They start off with a melancholy space rock type of feel. I like the idea behind the album and the very different sound they achieve, almost refreshing to see a band veer so far off the path of normalcy. Production is well done as well. Personal Favorites: Fight Test, Do you Realize??
i really like the progression of one more robot / sympathy 3001-21 but the panned bass throws me off a bit it's just a tiny bit too much yoshiko battles the robot pt1 reminded me of a kids song but was pretty interesting and cinematic I actually wrote more but forgot to save it so fuck it
oh yoshimi, they don't believe me - I tried to make this my jam in college but couldn't connect with it. Now back here listening again I like it more....'Do you realize' one of the greatest cheesy songs of all time- could be the theme song for this group. Also, really creative musically throughout.
Like them a lot but outside of a few songs this missed the mark for me. They have better.
interesting. Some good songs on here.
3.5
Very quaint. Just not really my thing
Musicality: 3 - Decent songs Production & Sound: 4 - very clean and tight Artistic Expression: 5 - very expressive and unique Performance: 3 - Decent Engagement & Enjoyment: 3 - Some good parts to it, I like the story going throughout Fun but not at the level that really hits the spot for me
This is what I thought all indie rock sounded like before I listened to more indie. It’s quite literally the most stereotypical indie music I could think of It’s not bad, but I also don’t think it’s great. The singer’s whiny voice is very annoying, but the instrumentals/production is cool.
There are flashes of occasional brilliance. But overall the album reeks of “we have Pink Floyd at home.”
Nice for background music, didn't really follow the lyrics
I enjoyed it. I think I liked it better than the other flaming lips album. 3? 4? 3.5 3 in the world maybe a 4 in this project
Weird def weird lol but entertaining and groovy, very guitary
This is a neat, psychedelic experience.
Kinda cool. Will listen again.
Phsychadelic similar to old Pink Floyd
that one song sounds like someone is farting
this wasn’t something i’d usually listen to - more techno atmospheric kinda style quite enjoyed it though - there were a few bops in there
not as bad as i thought it was going to be, although the opening track was the best and it got progressively worse
This is a great album, feels a little dated now that I am relisting to it. Maybe I am clouded by the "simplicity of youth" but it feels more like nursey rhymes now than something groundbreakingly new.
An album for younger generations. Doesn't have the same impact later in life and comes off a bit boring.
Fine but just made me wanna listen to Flaming Lips albums I like better.
A very pleasant listen.
Some gems on here
Best Song: Do You Realize?? The best lyrics on the album. Worst Song: It's Summertime. It was about this time that the album lost it's interesting indie edge and became sort of bland. Overall: Better than I expected. It was fun and felt creative throughout. A bit like a more upbeat Radiohead. The question is whether I want to listen to a more upbeat Radiohead.
Like the album name and artwork and the one 2 part song
I haven't listened to this album before. I enjoyed it. 80's alternate indie/ rock - interesting sound. I like the album art too 🙂
Pretty good, though I don't love it. There are some really catchy tunes on it, but I absolutely hate track 3, which ruins it a little for me.
Quite like it. Found myself humming some of the songs after a listening. Always a good sign! Probably inspired Jonathan Coulton?
Meget eksperimenterende/elektronisk/robot musik.. ikke alt for godt. Enkelte sanger minder lidt om Tame Impala dog..
Very pleasant. This was nicely melodic, well produced and regularly sidestepped my expectations
Its cool but I only really like a few songs.
Hippie 2112
More than the average amount of drugs went into the making of this album.
I mean I Definitely hear where the soundscapes of the mid 2000's through the teens got their indy influence from. I mean "Do you realize" was used to promote like everything from movies to hp pics to land rover suv's for a while there. It's not an album for me, necessarily, but I have friends (had?) That it would have been for. Jessie from college for example. Not my cuppa, but important none the less
That was... different. I didn't hate it, but it was rather odd. Definitely an acquired taste.
Ok. Not good, not bad.
Melodic. Dramatic. East listen.
I would give it 3.5 stars if I could.
A few great songs and some background songs that still sound good, but aren't quite as impactful.
Very different from what I normally listen to but a very interesting album. Different styles crop up all over the place and I found it very satisfying to get through the whole album from beginning to end.
-never heard of these guys but what a crazy album name! -who is yoshimi????? why are we battling the pink robots? i NEED to know more -liking the groove in these songs -okay so there is a whole story with the robots this is So cool -but WHY are the robots evil -they want to EAT the band??????? -omg that scream is CRAZY! love it! -its been a while since i’ve listened to something this chill -overall im giving it three stars
I have nothing against this album, but something about it has never connected for me. I've listened to it many times to try and see what I'm missing, but every time I've come away with a feeling of "yeah, s'alright I guess".
Like a lot of Flaming Lips, this is pretty cool and trippy, not a bad use of background music for 45 minutes. But also like a lot of Flaming Lips, I don’t have much connection or use for this. So I’ll probably forget everything here until the next time I’m convinced to listen. C+
Couple bangers but overall not for me
I listened to this album twice because I couldn't believe it was so boring the first playthrough. It was me, the second listen was much better. Mostly enjoyable, a couple I'd skip if I listened again. Albums like this are what I like about '1001 must hear', lots of new to me tunes.

Pleasant and playful psychedelic pop with futuristic electronic flourishes. I don’t always love narrative-heavy concept albums they way I did when I was a teenager; sometimes I find them a little silly now. But either way, I need to get into the music before I dig into any kind of story. The music here is enjoyable and inventive. I liked it but probably not enough to learn the lore of the pink robots.
My composition teacher in my music undergrad program played piano on some live performances of this which I think is pretty cool! I haven't listened to the album full through so I'm excited. In fact now that I think of it, 2 out of 2 people that were the primary sources of my music education were big fans of this band. The singer has a much better voice than I recall when I first heard of them. The album sounds nice and borders on wonderful. "Do You Realize" is the one that everyone knows. For me I always felt a little hesitancy to get into this band from that single because it somehow felt culty to me. The band all in their robes and singing stuff like that just put me off. All joking aside I think I grew up being a little afraid of cults. Regardless, this song is great. It's actually less epic than I remember, and ultimately the album is a little less epic than I thought it would be.

This one is a tough one. I see the vision, love the instrumental, and the overall vibe, but am In a paradox of enjoying and not enjoying the vocals.
I normally don’t care for the Flaming Lips, but even I thought this was pretty good.
Trippy album.
Chill, more like 3,5 stars. Not my music of choice but a few song added to spotify list
nice
I had this on CD when it was released. Never realised Fight Test was a complete Cat Stevens rip off till listening to it now vs back when it was released. The title track has been a fav of mine for a long time. This album was always a good sunny afternoon listen.
Good fun, but not a relisten album for me.
Un poco flashero pero hay temas buenos.
Mostly good songs even if a bit on the melodic and slow side, but I guess that was the intention all along
interesting but didnt hold my attention tight
3.5
Nice surprise!
Seemed unique and almost beautiful for 10 minutes then became 40 minutes of slow lifeless repetitive music that all washed into 1 lump with no solid hits. I can appreciate it once but don't feel inspired to listen again.
IMO better than the other flaming lips album on here.
I've always found the Flaming Lips to be a bit too artsy for my taste. This does nothing to change that opinion.
I own this album but hardly listen to it. Today's spin served as a reminder as to why. There is some accomplished pop here, and I'm a fan of all the bloops and squelches that pepper the soundscape. However, there's any so much tweeness I can take, and some of this jive is so saccharine it made my teeth melt. The vocals aren't up to much either, eh?
Top 3 Songs: 1 - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1 (3) 2 - Do You Realize (9) 3 - Fight Test (1)
