Pretty unusual album. They really have a unique sound that sets them apart. Couple of songs I really liked were "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1" and "Are You a Hypnotist??". "Do You Realize??" was also pretty good. Not really the kind of music I usually like to listen to but still really good.

Now here's an album that I'm intimately familiar with, but have cooled off to over time, putting me in an interesting spot. How do you rank something like that? Ultimately, it's not a bad album. Some of my change of opinion is based around outside factors - my overall opinion on the band, their musical output since then, Wayne Coyne's ego and behavior. This probably ranks somewhere in the middle for me... a pretty solid indie/alternative rock album, but not revolutionary by any means.

Some good tracks (1 and 3) but just fine overall

The Flaming Lips play it safe, too safe. It feels like their Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is them outsourcing a record to a group of untalented and unmotivated born-again Christians. The Flaming Lips gave these Christians the assignment to create an uninspired piece of dream pop, without any edge, with the most dumbed-down cartoonish lyrics, and extremely awkwardly awful sounding vocal effects. I am happy to report that these Christians succeeded in creating one of the dumbest pieces of Rock/Dream-Pop that I have ever listened to. Their only mistake was the okayish Do You Realize, which is way too catchy for my taste. Well done, 1/5.

Love a concept album but was hoping for more

How is this only from 2002?! This album is so cool. psychedelic, indie, odyssey, experimental fusion. "Do You Realize" was the only song I really knew from them and it's so cool to hear how it fit into the rest of the album.

Listen, I think Wayne Coyne is a unique, super-fun and interesting brain. There's plenty of music that has no brains and sticks just fine. "The smaller the brain, the bigger the stain" I always say. But smart-people music doesn't play to the masses. I like the thought, theme and execution of this record, but there's something about it that doesn't quite stick. And tho I want to embrace this with unrelenting excitement and open arms, hold it up high and tell everyone 'this is what we need more of in music,' It would not be genuine. Maybe I'm not smart enough, haven't eaten enough acid or know anything about being an oddball from Oklahoma. But I do know there's something here to explore. You've got my attention. Let's dig into Flaming Lips and Wayne Coyne.

Was this one of the weirdest things to gain popularity in the early 00s? That was a pretty vanilla, mainstream era in American culture I think - boy bands, rap/rock, etc - those were lame, but not weird. Flaming Lips were/are a little bit weird. "She Don't Use Jelly" was almost a decade before this, I think? So they'd been around, but I think it's interesting that this album got as much attention as it did in 2002. Apparently it's not a concept album, according to Wayne Coyne. Could have fooled me. I guess it just is a very thematic album. Kinda like the Arctic Monkeys album earlier this week, replacing all the themes of urban nightlife in Northern England with the existential angst of fighting for survival against pink robots? I dig the sound, the vibe, and the message, particularly after the ‘Yoshimi’ tracks. I especially liked Do You Realize. I’d listen to this again.

Aparte band, die ik overigens toch liever live zou willen zien dan op plaat. Maar wel echt een plaat met een eigen smoel en interessante muziek.

Nooit echt fan geweest van Flaming Lips. Zitten wel aardige nummers tussen, maar zo'n hele plaat kan mij toch echt niet boeien.

Ik was enthousiast tot ik me realiseerde dat een paar nummers ook van een boyband hadden kunnen zijn.

2nd listen and it is growing on me. Some good songs.

I wanted to like it! It was more interesting than I was expecting, but I still really didn't like the sound. It was crunchy on the inside of my ears, it was very unpleasant. but an extra point for being interesting.

Sober review: Not really impressed with the album, started strong and then really slowed down after the robot fight song. Felt like elevator music mixed with plastic beach backing tracks. Need to be on acid for a fuller musical experience

This is my 2nd or 3rd time listening to this record. Dense and lush instrumentals all over the place, big electric symphony. I get the sense that the band was trying to write something super ambitious and I think they nailed it. Definitely got some weird stuff on it, Wayne Coyne is a huge acid guy. Fight Test, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1, Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell, and Do You Realize are my stand out tracks. Sober Me gives it 7.5/10, Stoned Me gives it 8.5/10

LIstened to it a few times. I know the title-track and might have heard Do You Realize before. Everything else was new to me. Has some interesting sounds, but overall, it isn't something that grabbed me. Standout tracks: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part I. Fight Test, Do You Realize.

Although I recognize this album cover, I know very little about this release, or the flaming lips for that matter. After listening to it I can say I will definitely be digging deeper into the flaming lips discography. Very interesting story, and some great songs

It's super vibey, and I love it. The lyrics/voice are engaging and fit extremely well with the backing track. I especially liked the keyboard in the songs it was featured in, but each instrument had it's time in spotlight. In addition, no instrument overpowered another. This is an album that I could put in the background while I'm just thinking as it's pretty relaxing. Favorite track: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1

(Wrote the wrong review on the last one) Title track is great. I like the style a lot, the mix of instruments at the front and dominant bass makes me think of Tame Impala at times

One of my favorite psychedelic albums of all time. The drumming is excellent as usual for Flaming Lips, and the lyrics and themes still feel futuristic to this day. Highlights: 1, 3, 6, 7, and 9.

such a magnificent album. the lush production, beautiful vocals, and overall sound just make this project very enjoyable for myself (not an avid flaming lips listener). i highly recommend this album. will be purchasing vinyl.

Awsome

Another great surprise that expelled any/all preconceived notions I had upon seeing today's entry. Apparently (obviously) I know/knew absolutely nothing about The Flaming Lips, but this was/is immediately right in my wheelhouse. Maybe a concept album....sign me up. Dreamy - melodic - mysterious - gorgeous - electronic loops mixed with organic elements - just great music which is simultaneously accessible yet not predictable. How have I missed this album all these years? I'm looking forward to repeat listens of this in headphones. I wonder if at some point I end up viewing this as a five.....this is awesome. ...screw it. 5 stars for an album I'd never heard of 24 hrs ago 9/10 5 stars.

Psych-pop for the soul

This one is a hard one to rate. It feels ambitious, and lots of interesting stuff going on. I'm a fan of some of the later songs like "Do you realize", and overall I enjoyed the album. But I would also say it feels rough around the edges, and I think that comes from its age. I listened on youtube and maybe it would have been better listened to without the inherent compression. But anyways, I like it and I think I'll check out some of The Flaming Lips' other stuff.

A fusion of modern electronic and instrumental music with an emphasis on drums and good male vocals.

I really like the album art track 1- the vibe was nice and could bop to it if I was in the right mood track 2- good transition, very psychedelic, like mike tvs song in willy wonka, feels like a post apocalyptic world after the mechanical uprising when the first plant grows again track 3- feels much more happy than the last track, love the backing vocals, good vibes, interesting use of synths within majority guitar, so far the whole album feels like I'm tripping on acid, are the robots a metaphor for like depression/drugs?, vibe got darker at end track 4- wtf is happening, the battle between the robots and yoshimi/him? overload of synths and screaming, a wild ride, idk what's happening but its kinda fun, will never listen to this song again tho track 5- back to the psychedelic vibe of track 3, no vocals for a while, 2 tracks, there we go, reminds me of Harry styles, feels hopeful with instrumental but the lyrics allude to giving up/surrendering, a bit of a spacey vibe to it, like floating around in the universe with no set location, just being a free spirit roaming around space, this is a long ass song, the drops are very nice whenever the music stops and picks back up track 6- vocals are very quiet so I can't hear what he's saying but love the vibe, very peaceful, this whole album so far has felt like a lucid dream, harmonies gave been nice all the way through, not a fan of a fade out track 7-feels like stepping off your spaceship onto an alien planet where their civilisation is much more advanced than your own and feeling out of your depth, feels like floating, lovely vibe as usual, songs are starting to sound very similar which isn't a good sign, outro was nice track 8- called its summertime so should feel summery, is giving quite a summery vibe, reminds me of a flashback to summer in a coming of age movie, showing a montage of all of the summer highlights with your friends, I really like this one, I never really like closing a track with drums track 9- intro of counting down was fun, epic vocals with echo, FLOATING IN SPACE, light happy instrumental with dark lyrics 'do you realise that someday everyone you know will die', key change feels very worshippy, this is one of my faves so far, bridge is very good, closes with opening line which I like track 10- gives the same vibes as the rest of the tracks after the sudden change in do you realise, pace is picking up, ties together album themes of looking into the future and hopes/dreams looking forward, track 11 (last track) - strange as all we have is now felt like a strong closer and this could be a complete tonal shift from that, looking to be just an instrumental track like track 4 but slightly less chaotic, slightly, feels a bit unnecessary

Flight test and in the morning of the musicians really stood out to me. will def come back to this one since I liked it considerably more on the second listen as opposed to when Nathan first recommended it

Yoshimi is the sequel to The Soft Bulletin, except it's also a loosely organized allegorical concept album about the struggle of humanity to extricate itself from the technological disaster it's created, but lyricist Wayne Coyne concentrates on the human costs involved. I'm a sucker for these kinds of themes to begin with, but the Lips do something unique with it. Their lyrics are goofy, heartfelt, incisive, and utterly humane, which couldn't be more endearing. Musically, the Lips write fairly simple pop songs with pretty melodies, but they've come up with arrangements that complement and deepen their lyrical content beautifully. They adroitly mix warm analog guitars with digital drums, orchestral flourishes, blatantly artificial and sometimes silly synth patches, augmented with studio trickery and faux-documentary excerpts, all grounded by Wayne Coyne's tremulous, wistful voice. Numerous psychedelic touches reveal The Lips' devotion to Pink Floyd, but they sound nothing like them, really. Are there weak spots? Yes, but they are hard to find. I find Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part II musically uninteresting and just plain silly. There is a preponderance of ballads. Nothing really rocks hard. But these are minor complaints. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is a very strong album and well worth your time. 4 stars out of 5.

Sobretodo la producción de soniditos y texturas variadas fue lo que me agradó. Creo que no me quedo con ninguna canción para mis playlists pero 9/10 igual por la experiencia. Top 3: Fight Test, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots P2 y Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon. Creo que a andrugkr le guatrian justo Fight Test y are you a Hypnotist porque tiene vibras radiohead. Mood: en la víspera de enfrentar al Lich (a.k.a. Sweet P.) en un atardecer postapocalíptico creado por Studio Gibli.

Smooth and mellow. I've heard several of the songs before on their own but they sound even better listening through the entire album.

A long time favourite.

One more robot - sounds like currents era tame impala especially with some of the vocal melody choices. Interesting bass mixing choice, hard panned to right speaker for a bulk of the song. Yoshimi pt 1 - They like the quick pans of various instruments. Heard here early in the acoustic guitars. This is a thing with The Unicorn’s music, which is a reason I had thought to recommend them to Jake. Pt 2 - drum production on this one sounds really great, interesting that it is mostly centered in the mix. Giving space to all the wacky stuff on the outside. Ego - this one gives me currents vibes too. Those cymbal crashes are crunchy and nice. Really subtle low guitar pads wide in the mix make the song sound way bigger. Summertime - it’s interesting, I wouldn’t call him a strong vocalist, you can hear it on this track, but it works for their music. Do You Realize ?? - probably my favorite flaming lips song, also the most common opinion. I think it works best as a snapshot of their sound, particularly on this album. The vocal melodies, the hard panned instruments, a lot of repetition. Really pretty stuff. Gave me an existential crisis the first time I heard it. All we have is now // Approaching Pavonis - Doing this as one thing, because my main take away is the interest of overall album flow and the arc of the album itself. If we look at it like a movie, Yoshimi battling the robots is like the first act action sequence and Do You Realize is like the true climax. These two tracks are the falling action into a slight reprise to leave with some energy. As standalone songs their both fine, but in the scope of the album they serve their purpose well. Overall - It’s a cool album. It came out in 2002 but feels older, which I’m sure is their intent. Yoshimi pt 1 and Do You Realize?? are, to me, the stand out tracks with the rest serving more to tell the story of the album. So it’s definitely better as a “listen in one sitting” kind of thing. Some of the songs get slightly repetitive, but not in a way that hurts the experience too much. You can hear a lot of little production things that are interesting, I’m wondering if everyone else will pick up on those, I have the luxury of professional studio monitors. I looked into it, the same producer on this also worked with Tame Impala, as well as a lot of other bigger indie acts. Interesting to hear that sound here earlier and how it developed over the years.

Nunca había escuchado este disco completo, pero qué bueno haberlo hecho ahora. Me dio mucha paz (?), con un toque de ternura, incluso aunque a veces las letras tiendan más hacia la depresión. Supongo que tuvo un efecto relajante, por así decirlo. Y me conmovió. No tengo skips en este disco, pero diría que "In the Morning of the Magicians" fue mi canción preferida, quizá le sigan "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1" y "Are You a Hypnotist?", pero todas tienen algo que me gusta, el cierre instrumental también está padre. ¿Es una actualización de lo psicodélico? Asumo que sí y sobre todo porque los Flaming Lips siempre son asociado a eso, lo que sí sé es que para mí todo está en su punto. 10/10

I loved this album, although I knew about The Flaming Lips I've never listened to them. This album specifically has a lot of experimental electronic and progressive sounds but just enough to be a pleasant experience

really confident album. probably their best 'sound'. "Do You Realize" is as advice-y as I want them to get, and they kind of kept going in a hippy advice-y lyrical direction after this that I wasn't wild about.

I’m a sucker for a space adventure and this one was a pleasant one at that. Within seconds of hitting play we’re grabbed into the space aesthetic. I thought this was an early 2010’s album and I was shocked to find out this album is from 02. I’m not sure I really like any songs on their own. The whole album flows very well and does an exceptional job of painting the space atmosphere. It’s Summertime is very beatlesque but definitely not the highlight of the album. The best is not a single track found in the middle or the end of the album. Most of the fun is found in the first five songs and scattered in small parts in the back half of the album. I was looking forward to Yoshimi’s battle with cancer over the course of the album. The greatness of the album both lyrically and musically is mostly only present in the front half. The saying "it’s not about the destination it's about the journey" applies to all 47 minutes of this album. You will definitely find me playing this song on repeat from time to time.

Yesssssss.... This is hands down one of my all-time favorites. A kitschy, fuzzy, psychedelic odyssey in the form of a sci-fi anime rock opera. Every song is cinematic, melodious, and fun. Covering topics like sentient robots and vitamin-eating Japanese schoolgirls.

Bizarre but not good

I had never heard this album before and was intrigued, having no idea what I would be in for. Upon first listen, I thought of Pink Floyd, some Radiohead, some Beck. By the end of the first listen, I wanted it to start again - a great find!

Take Space Odyssey and add robot sounds, japanese girls, a luscious bass sound, and a blatant Cat Stevens rip-off and you have this album. (they had to split royalties with Cat STevens for opening track which sounds exactly like Father & Son)

I've listened to this album before and I will say I enjoy the musical aspects but personally I am not the biggest fan of the main singer's voice

I liked it. I give it 3* because I probably won't choose to put it on, if somebody was listening to it though I'd happily leave it on. They're obviously decent at writing I enjoyed the layers to their songs it's just preference more than anything. Just didn't grab me as an album but wasn't bad by any means.

Really good album. Needed a bit of a track with change of pace in there for me but fab otherwise.

Never really listened intently to the flaming lips before. Broken Bells/Danger Mouse vibes. Pt. 1 of the Album's namesake is awesome - love a narrative in a song. the glitch rumble in the chorus gets a little overdone by the end of the song. Chorus is very catchy. Pt 2 is great too - instrumental, imagine this is the actual battle. Awesome bass sounds. I'm starting to realize the whole album flows together like a story. Cool stuff.

Easy listening indie rock

A weird experience, definitely. It mixes in stuff that sounds like early-2000s pop with some alternative music things that I can now see that have even affected some other more modern music that I've heard. The whole album works wonderfully together and it has a solid musical theme throughout, but no one specific song jumps out to me as outstanding. A good listen, which I'd recommend to _most_ people, though.

First time listening to the full album. It was okay, and had a lot more going on than just Santa's and aliens.

This is the first album that I've been suggested that I'm intimately familiar with. There a several titanic songs on this album, including Fight Test, Yoshimi part 1, and Do You Realize. In between these songs is a psychedelic soundscape that guides you dreamily through the album. The instrumentals on this album are incredible. No two songs sound alike, and yet the album has a cohesive feel. 5/5

Good ass album

Really liked the technical fusion sound.

It's a little on the weird side as far as lyrics. The music is nice to listen to.

Soft rock with significant experimental interludes. Not a sound that captures my imagination on first listen, but could easily grow: The music isn't flawed per se, just smooth. Maybe subtle.

Really, more flaming lips? I can't honestly believe that this band would release an album in 2002 that needs to be heard. Ok so the first song was cool but was a total ripoff of I think a Simon and Garfunkel song, the rest is crap (so far, about halfway in). Old mate can't really sing, either. 2/5.
