Cowboy Junkies
5/5
I have always loved the Sweet Jane cover but had never listened to this entire album until now. I am blown away at how ethereal and gorgeous it truly is from start to finish. First time voting an album I've never heard prior a 5....just fantastic.

Sonic Youth
2/5
Friend of mine in high school was very into them. I always found them to be dissonant, noisy, atonal, and high on their own supply......I still do John....I still do....

PJ Harvey

Loved this. Angry, raw and powerful. Still amazed I somehow missed out on PJ in the 90s.

Metallica

Very easy 5. Early Metallica is just so goddamn good. Needed this one on a Friday after a tough week.

Bob Dylan
4/5
Glad to be starting this and to have this be the first album on the journey. I have heard the standouts many times and they are classics for a reason. The overall tone is very melancholy and yet beautiful and uplifting. Really enjoyed this one and will come back to it again I'm sure.
Jerry Lee Lewis
3/5
Tom Waits
4/5
Great stuff. I've always wanted to delve into Waits' catalog and was not disappointed with this first record. Tom's voice is definitely not for everyone but the story telling and the greasy, bluesy, soulful, and beautifully melancholy delivery all over this album is just phenomenal. Didn't realize that he wrote Jersey Girl and I think this is the better version.
Aphex Twin
2/5
Electronic and ambient to be sure. Not really for me but can understand why it is highly regarded.
Keith Jarrett
4/5
The idea that this was largely improvised is astounding. Amazing performance.
Fiona Apple
3/5
George Michael
3/5
Prime 80s.
Raekwon
2/5
eh....
Eric Clapton
2/5
Clapton is a guitar master, there really is no arguing this. That said, the album is very middle of the road at best and most of the time quite boring. Bob's version of I shot the sheriff is superior. Also.... Fuck Eric Clapton 😂
The xx
4/5
Minimalist and atmospheric. Really enjoyed this one.
The Byrds
3/5
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five
4/5
Funky, soulful and a lot of fun. Clearly a very influential and important album in the genre.
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Enjoyed most of this album very much. Simple yet beautiful music under pure poetry.
Dire Straits
4/5
Classic anthems and great guitar work throughout. Strong opening, lost me a bit in the second half but overall a excellent album.
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Fucking smooth as silk....loved it
Mylo
2/5
To be fair, I liked it more than I thought I would. Some stand outs and interesting sampling, but most was just monotonous and boring.
Incredible Bongo Band
4/5
Alot of fun listening to this. Funky 70s vibe and tons of percussion.
Faith No More
5/5
It would get a 5 from me for Epic alone....the rest of the album is just as fantastic front to back. War Pigs!!
GZA
2/5
Dinosaur Jr.
3/5
The Yardbirds
2/5
The Byrds
3/5
Miles Davis
3/5
Overall an enjoyable listen although in spots trended toward atonal. No denying the musicianship but definitely not my favorite from Miles. 3.5
Buena Vista Social Club
4/5
What's not to love here. Great percussion, blaring horns, intricate guitar work, and wonderful vocal harmonies. My only critique is that some of the songs went on a bit longer than they needed to. Overall a great album.
The Roots
3/5
X-Ray Spex
4/5
Cannot believe I've not heard these guys before. Kick ass punk, a saxophone and a great vocalist. You can hear the Sex Pistols but they also have their own undeniable sound and style. Clearly a huge influence on many of the more modern ska/punk bands I grew up listening to.
David Bowie
3/5
Enjoyed most of this one. Lazarus and I can't give everything away were highlights for me.
A Tribe Called Quest
3/5
John Coltrane
3/5
I was looking forward to this one as I know it's widely regarded as Coltrane's masterpiece. I can appreciate the musicianship on display for sure. Every member clearly a master of their instrument. I think it's just my relationship with jazz in general but when the pieces drift apart or delve into atonal sound, I enjoy it less overall. Maybe after subsequent listens I will warm to it more.
The Libertines
3/5
Not bad. Not great.
Meat Loaf
4/5
Cheesy, over the top, melodramatic....and I loved it. His name is Robert Paulson!
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Always have loved the standouts but never gave the full album a listen. Really enjoyed it all the way through despite not being huge into reggae.
Ravi Shankar
2/5
Definitely appreciated the first track and the explanation of the various instruments/musical structure. Very interesting though not something I would listen to again.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Liked this album much more than I thought I would. Dusty's voice is wonderful throughout. Son of a Preacher Man is a classic but other standouts for me were The Windmills of Your Mind and No Easy Way Down.
T. Rex
3/5
LCD Soundsystem
3/5
Billie Holiday
4/5
Beautiful and just so damn sad....her voice is unmistakable even if not as dynamic is it was on past albums.

Ray Charles
4/5
Wonderful stuff here back to front
Portishead
3/5
Frank Black
2/5
This is the first one so far that I had never heard before, was sure I would love and could not wait for it to be over....The album is far to long and the genre blending, vocal and songwriting choices just never landed for me. Sorry Black Francis...
Cowboy Junkies
5/5
I have always loved the Sweet Jane cover but had never listened to this entire album until now. I am blown away at how ethereal and gorgeous it truly is from start to finish. First time voting an album I've never heard prior a 5....just fantastic.

I'm not sure how I missed the boat on this band but I love it....great listen all the way through
N.W.A.
2/5
I liked a lot of it but the sexist lyrics are tough to listen through. Fuck, fuck, fuck, motherfucker as well....
Miles Davis
3/5
I enjoyed the album and 50s era Jazz in general. Didn't realize this was a compilation record. Repetitive in spots
Lana Del Rey
3/5
Digital Underground
2/5
The Humpty Dance is always good for a smile but this thing was tough to get through. It's way way way to long and repetitive for me. 2.5

Radiohead
5/5
Not my favorite Radiohead album but still brilliant and far from their worst
Teenage Fanclub
4/5
Violent Femmes
5/5
Absolutely essential album for me. The Femmes opened the door to so many other bands in my youth.
Fairport Convention
3/5
Solid 60s folk. Easy listen and "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" is a standout

Janis' voice is otherworldly. Just didn't click with a lot of the tracks on this one.
Cat Stevens
5/5
Such a wonderful album front to back. Would get a 5 for Father and Son alone.
Judas Priest
4/5
Solid 80s power metal.
Kings of Leon
4/5
Nostalgia heavy for me. A couple of duds (wtf 17?) but overall a decent rock record. Closer will always be a standout.
Jethro Tull
3/5
Massive Attack
3/5
Kid Rock
2/5
Kid Rock is a garbage human being. That said, there was a time I enjoyed some of this record. Not so much these days....
4/5
Loved this and cannot believe I missed the boat on PJ somehow.
4/5
Funky, jazzy, soulful bliss. Great stuff and War is clearly more than just low rider...

3/5
Not big into reggae but I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would.
Shack
4/5
Nothing terribly innovative here but does does everything need to be? I enjoyed this one for what it is, a solid 90s Britpop album
Beck
5/5
Love this album from beginning to end.
The Shamen
1/5
I suffered through this entire thing hoping to find something, anything positive to keep it from being my first 1. I try to be objective when it comes to stuff outside of my taste, but this is just a complete dumpster fire of awful. Boring, tedious, awful sounding and relentlessly repetitive.
Eminem
4/5
Another nostalgia heavy album that is now difficult to look past the misogyny, homophobia and violence. Stan will always be a classic and Kim is still unbearably uncomfortable to sit through. There's no denying his talent, his ability to shock with his lyrics and or the fantastic hooks/beats scattered throughout this one.
R.E.M.
5/5
5/5
Over produced and hyper polished...every song seems bigger than the last... And I still love it almost 20 years later.
3/5
I have such a love/hate with Dylan. Brilliant lyricist and songwriter but a vocalist he damn sure ain't. +1 for The Band carrying the second half of this performance despite the wailing off key vocals
Kraftwerk
2/5
Not for me
Blur
3/5
Dwight Yoakam
2/5
This guy needs some therapy....not for me
Orbital
1/5
Having suffered through The Shamen earlier in the month, I decided after the first two tracks of this one that I wasn't going to put my ears through it again....time becomes a loop....time becomes a loop....time becomes a loop....
Nico
2/5
Nico can’t sing her way out of a paper bag and that flute can fuck right off. That said, I did somehow enjoy this one more than I thought I would. Haunting and ethereal throughout. 2.5
Alice In Chains
5/5
Death In Vegas
2/5
Better than most of the electronic I've been exposed to here but still monotonous and boring in alot of spots.

Deep Purple
4/5
Elliott Smith
4/5

3/5
Norah Jones
4/5
Starbuck's jokes aside, I really did dig this album. Norah's voice is just so damn silky smooth. Each track more relaxing and comforting than the last. Probably helped that I had a gentle snow fall happening outside while listening, but I stand by the rating
Sinead O'Connor
5/5
Goddamn, what a great album. Sinead's vocals are truly incredible. Nothing compares 2 U was always a favorite but I am so glad
to have finally listened to the rest of this record. RIP Sinead....

1/5
Nope. Nope. Nope. Ironic fascism (?) blended with electronic/industrial repetition....An absolute slog to get through and had a hard time finding anything note worthy that would save it from this rating.
David Bowie
3/5
Leaned into that sax waaaaaay to hard on this one David.
Beastie Boys

Rush
4/5
It's Rush. Epic prog rock and I enjoyed most very much....that said, fuck Ayn Rand.
The Flaming Lips
5/5
Loved this. Trippy, experimental, often weird and yet still organic, cohesive and frankly beautiful. Do you realize was always a favorite but had never listened to this one in it's entirety. So glad to have discovered what I've been missing all these years.
Billy Bragg
4/5
Röyksopp
2/5
I didn't despise this as much as some of the other electronica I've run into here. I also didn't find it to be all that interesting either.
Randy Newman
3/5
The Smiths
2/5
I just don't understand this band....On paper, I probably should be into them. Instead, I find them just irritating to listen to overall. Morrissey is a piece of shit and can't sing his way out of a paper bag....
Snoop Dogg

3/5
Pretty decent 90s grungy/psychedelic brit pop 3.5
Marianne Faithfull
3/5
Enjoyed the back half more than the front. Her voice is strained and grungy in the best sort of way. Ballad of Lucy Jordan and the Working Class Hero cover were stand outs
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Depeche Mode
4/5
Dark, brooding, synthy, 80s. Loved it.
Gram Parsons
3/5
Enjoyed more than I thought I would. Emmy Lou needs more credit for this record than she gets
De La Soul
3/5
XTC
2/5
Could not wait for this one to be over. Chord progressions are all over the place. Vocals are weak. Someone else described it as bad Tears for Fears and that's spot on. Couple of decent songs but overall, not for me.

Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Willie Nelson
4/5
Bob Dylan
4/5
I'd probably be more into Dylan if someone else sang his music....still enjoyed this one a great deal. Storytelling mastery.

The Rolling Stones
4/5

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

The vocals took out of this one. Shame too because I enjoyed a lot of the instrumental. Two dancers were both decent tracks overall.
