Reviews (page 13 of 14)

It was definitely a vibe, but I didn’t really enjoy listening to it that much. During my listening session to this album I saw a lot of people saying that Rush was the best thing of their lives and that its not just a band, it’s an experience, so I thought that they grew up with this band or something. I don’t really like prog rock that much but I think the singer of this band has great vocals! I would give this album a 3.7/10 tho, Tom sawyer is actually a hit and would listen to it again.

Krass echter Haie rock. Jetzt weiß ichvqas das ist

It was fine

'The world is, the world is / Love and life are deep.' Virtuosic but tedious, soulless, charmless, a mode of storytelling that neither inspires nor has its way w/ words and ideas. 'Mechanical music / Adrenaline surge.' It sure is mechanical, but an adrenaline surge not so much: it's dead in the water, it's a million sentences too deep in the sludge of wooden musicianship and barren lyricism to be a surge of anything, the opposite of a rush, more like a prolonged case of nerdism. I'll give it to them for being more pop friendly than they are on 2112, but they're still enemies of pop music. If that record is abysmal, this is really bad. +, Geddy Lee's vocals have to be the most annoying in rock music, like a helium-sucker w/o the comedy, the slapstick.

Tom Sawyer and 6 more songs that you won't care about

It's prog. I just don't get prog.

Don’t like. Don’t get. Boring riffs. Melodically bland. Holy hell. I expected to like this more. Completely forgettable.

Sounds like the soundtrack to a forgotten 1980s sci-fi rock opera starring no one and featuring nothing.

Another mid white guy album.

Meh. Never really liked Geddy's voice. I find it grating.

There are moments on this album that are enjoyable (Limelight for instance), but every time I started to get into it something extremely dumb would happen (YYZ for instance).

What happens when a band like Journey becomes obsessed with Tolkien, Frank Herbert or maybe Dungeons and Dragons (perhaps all three)? Prog Rock, I guess. Look, I'm sure there's a big market for this - if I were capable of visualising I could easily picture what that market looks like - but I just don't belong to it. Some say the music is 'virtuosic' but that strikes me as a synonym for 'fast.' I can't play guitar, I don't know what goes into playing the guitar reeeeeeeally fast. Being fast might be a facet of virtuosity, but if that were the case millions of teenage boys the world over would claim that they are virtuosos in the bedroom because they...well, you can finish the joke on your own, I'm sure. Others have said that the music is philosophical, or that it is inspired by philosophy. Well, I have three degrees in philosophy (not a brag, it was not a good idea and is not especially impressive) and I can say with some authority that there was nothing notably philosophical on this record. This claim might be about Prog Rock more broadly...but, I'm doubtful. Philosophers can be classical pianists, competent strummers, passable violinists or cellists or - at a push - some sort of Jazz musician (but probably not a very good one). All of this is to say that this record was...just not for me. It wasn't painful to listen to, but I did keep looking at the time stamp to see how much longer I had to endure. But, it did occasionally have me tapping my foot, so I suppose that's something at least.

Nothing to write home about

Final Countdown by fucking Journey

Not 2112 & made in the 80’s

When you prompt the AI: "Make me complex rock music with deep lyrics"

Just so bored by this album. Meh at best

I bet the drummer in this band was a right fanny! One Rush album is enough.

Didn't like it that much Already liked the song Limelight. The album has songs of different topics, which is interesting. However, many songs don't resonate with me.

Sounds like a band that really like guitars and drums and that is all they basically do. The camera eye at least has a bit of variation, but there is still lots of compensating guitar and drum work

Rally reviews are over. Turns out trying to review half of the bullshit slop we get served on here is near impossible when trying to drive over some of the most fucked corrugation I've ever seen (thanks Gibb River Road). Anyways, back in civilisation now. What a treat to came back to. MORE RUSH, YIPPEEE (sarcasm). This was definitely more welcoming than the dreadful 2112, but Rush have this amazing ability to make a relatively short album feel like an eternity. The first half of the record was okay, but the constant dragging on towards the latter half really did me in. I refuse to go into specifics about this record, because I do not like Rush, and I do not want to listen to them a second time.

The album is not entirely enjoyable.

I understand that Rush does a good version of the thing that they do, but the thing that they do just isn't for me.

Not bad. Some nice guitar riffs but a bit dated

Liked a couple songs. It's ok, but would not want to listen to whole album very often.

Not my thing.

drums/rhythm sound nice the album is good but wouldn’t listen to it again one song is 10 minutes long so i skipped like halfway through 💀

C’mon man… these albums are getting WORSE!

talk abt Rush the way i wanted to finish this quickly

Fuck you, Rush

Gonna liveblog my thoughts as I listen Tom Sawyer: Have obviously "listened" to this song through cultural osmosis but have never sat down and actually listened. 30 seconds in and the vocals make me want to kill myself. Synths are unforgivable but I sadly must admit the chord progression around 45 seconds hit a bit harder than I'd like. Holy fuck synth solo is the worst thing I have ever heard. Guitar solo is nails on a chalkboard but bassline is actually kinda cool. I'm hearing "government" "society" and "discontent" in the lyrics, seems pretty redacted so that's cool. It's not really lingering on any one idea for too long like a lot of the world's worst prog rock does so I can appreciate that. Definitely could have ended one minute earlier without losing ANYTHING interesting. Red Barchetta: Once again, an utterly detestable synth. Kinda confused because musically the intro is like a nice jangle pop song and then the singing starts and I want to jump off a bridge. Oh okay cool now they're like rocking out which sounds pretty bad. Fuck the bridge is so terrible. Okay like in my brain I can appreciate that the musicianship feels very tight and intense but the whole thing is just so immensely SINCERE like they are staring me in the eyes and wanting me to like the music SO BADLY I just can't take it seriously...like each musical idea is like "hey now check THIS OUT BRO!" I honestly don't even hate the sound of a lot of this song aside from the vocals and the massively outdated keyboards which isn't totally their fault... but like conceptually I just cannot find any sort of appreciation YYZ: I was taking a shit during this song and don't remember a single thing. Everything going on in the bathroom was more interesting to me Limelight: This is definitely the best so far and makes me think that if they would just make over the top pop music like The Darkness I would hate them a lot less The Camera Eye: What do you want me to say? It's annoying. Bass is cool. Witch Hunt: ahaha Woah creepy dude .. Nice ..!Oh okay now its freaking epic AWESOMEE <3 Vital Signs: We just don't have a need for this music anymore. It's not useful at this point in human history. It's fine. I just don't care Fav song: Limelight

Ok, let's see what all the fuss is about. Wow, bit fricking extra. I've had enough of this I think. Better than Morrissey, but that's a low bar. Two.

Mja, ingen favorit

Rush has never landed on my radar. They sound like what the love child of led Zeppelin and queen might. This album was some kind of operatic experiment that didn’t land with me. I think this was one of their later albums so maybe I will try an earlier effort before righting them off. 2/5

This is an album and band for people that don’t care about vocals or vocal melodic lines, or lyrics. I am not one of those people

Ok jazzy and proggy, but I won't be listening to it again.

Not as terrible as I feared.

There are bits and pieces here and there that I thought were somewhat cool, but overall it's a real piece of shit. Like I feel like vomiting up my throat.

Song: Tom Sawyer this song is good but it is not a song that i usually listen to and his voice kind of sounds like a girl a little bit Song: Y Y Z this song is good but there is nobody talking how are you supposed to know when they are talking if there is only a guitar Song: limelight this song is great It is my favorite out of this album and this is kind of a song i would listen to but not quite

I don't really like the song "Tom Sawyer" only because I don't like his voice, and I also don't really like rock music. I do kind of like the song "YYZ" only because I like how the instruments and the beat really clash together and I also like how there are not as many lyrics. I like the song "Limelight", what I like about is is the instruments in the background, but I would really only have this on for like background music. I wouldn't recommend this album.

Hmm, pretty rock. A bit much for me. 2 or 3.

I won’t be rushing to listen to this again

The one memory I have of anything Rush-related is of other drummers at band camp geeking out over Neil Peart. I appreciate Peart, but I’m never going to fall in love with a band because of their drummer. Mayyyyyybe John Bonham, but that’s about it. I’ve heard Tom Sawyer on classic rock radio but have never willingly listened to it until today. And (three songs in) I’m getting exactly the vibe I expected of Rush: it’s complicated and technical, but it isn’t pleasing. Oh I’ve heard Limelight before. Meh all around.

a lot of the songs sound the same, great vibe tho

I’ve never been a fan of Rush, probably because I don’t enjoy the vocals at all and the lyrics are garbage. Even musically I find this rather unendurable. The guitar riffs are mediocre and samey. Nothing grips me at all, not even “Tom Sawyer”. I can’t stand “YYZ”, and I like most instrumentals. Was glad when the album ended so I could put something decent on. I’ll give it a 2 because I didn’t turn it off and because it’s relatively short which reduced my torture.

I have never been a fan of Rush. I like prog type music but Rush always seemed like music for men in jorts who say racist things to their friends in a garage while drinking swill beer. Not a fan of my pre-conceived notion, I can appreciate the music, but I won't go back to this record in the future or Rush's catalog. I know that it is a pretentious opinion. While I am not a fan of Rush I can see the appeal,

Not my favorite Canadian import. Geddy Lee's singing grates on my eardrums.

Trompe l’œil Zeppelin

Meh. Listened to it on Friday and already not really remembering much of this album. Didn't hate it, but nothing to see here.

Tom Sawyer and some tracks that weren't Tom Sawyer.

4/10…hard-progressive rock

First song was good. Some song in the middle was also ok.

Pre-listening thoughts: oh boy am I RUSHING to get this one over with! Rush more like mush am I right guys! Haha! Post/during listening thoughts: I’ve literally only heard Tom Sawyer. And it’s a good enough song, but is it enough to save this album from the fiery depths of 2-dom? NO!!!!!! This is like if Styx jerked themselves off musically and were also really annoying. 3.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: FUCK YOU RUSH Fav tracks: Tom Sawyer Least fav tracks: this certainly wasn’t as bad as 2112 but I hate this guys voice

I love what they are doing musically. I don't like the singing.

Not for me

Considering how much this band is lauded in I Love You, Man, I was expecting a lot more. Generic, boring rock songs.

Le dan cualquier color con Rush. A los metaleros y progs se les caen los calzones con esta banda y yo, que nunca antes los había escuchado, ahora puedo decirles que no sé qué le encuentran.

Already heard this in 2024. Two stars

La même chose avec les sons d'une décennie impaire, j'aurai aimé.

Nothing particular but not really bad

Well, good songs. Not my style

Хуйня, скучно, мне не понравилось

Self indulgent prog rock.

This is #day221 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... when I said I was looking forward to this day, I didn’t mean I was looking forward to another progressive rock entry. Thanks to this challenge, I realized that this is one of my least favorite rock genres. There are exceptions, like Pink Floyd, but I've never considered them pure progressive rock, more like art or psychedelic rock, and beyond. Now, Moving Pictures... I like the album artwork, but this is where it all ends. This over-technicality of the music leaves me completely cold. Also, I'm not a fan of the vocals, especially when the guy hits higher notes and ends up squealing. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day222. I really mean it.

I like “Tom Sawyer,” this was not equally interesting to me throughout

2.6 not my favorite Rush album.

what ever

Kinda forgettable

Rush just isn't my thing.

Great drums, beat, lyrics, etc. Not a great time though.

It's an okay early 80s prog rock. But not something I seem myself coming back to.

Very Rush

Very cool but not my thing.

Des synthés et des caisses claires qui résonnent, bordel que j'aime pas les années 80.

на разок

Desperately boring. 2 stars because it wasn’t annoying.

Prog and 1980s soft rock aren’t my favourite genres, but put them together and you get… something that’s still not my cup of tea. Good drumming though.

I'm sure there are loads of middle aged whites dads from north America that rock out to this album. Alas, I am not from north America, nor did I rock out.

rush is the most boring least proggy prog band and they suck lolipops

I never liked Rush

2 sterne

Some amazing moments... but all a bit pompous!

Vocal não curti tanto. Baixo. YYZ bem bem boa. Baixo.

Ok, but not for me 2/5

So annoying. Some cool sound effects like lasers. But the pretense is overwhelming.

Classic rock, meh

Not as repulsive as I was expecting. I can kinda see why people like these guys. I'm also pretty confident I'll never listen to this again.

I had a crush on someone who was really into Rush when I was 17. I remember making a spotify playlist on it with a ton of Magnetic Fields and Car Seat Headrest. I listened to a ton of Rush and New Order cause that person really liked those bands and these bands. I listened to Tom sawyer so much while talking to them and it reminds me of that time. They did not like me back and was extremely respectable about it. After I told them my feels and got denied the feels died down and it felt nice to know that didn't make our relationship out of that all weird. Though that may have been from my POV, either way we still talked for a while til we eventually grew apart. I was not in a good spot mentally back then and they were really nice to me and was a great friend. I can't really say why mainly because I can't remember it. All I remember is having someone to talk to and be silly with in a trying time. It's a bit strange to have such a positive emotion on a time and place based entirely off of vibes and nothing else but what can you do. This album reminds me of that time, so it gives me a ton of good feels. Despite this, I don't really like this band at all or this album much. Like i recognize it is really cool and sounds good and I can see myself liking it but I just don't. Maybe i wasn't born with the hard rock dog in me. For being a song i don't really care for too much tom sawyer has a huge part in my brain that triggers a nice memory.

I get that it's popular but I'm really not sure why. This, Billy Joel, and Queen are my top artists of people like them because they want to fit in and "everyone loves them" it's really not very good

Super nerdy. I like moments but not songs. I don't like Neil Peart's drumming.

++: YYZ +: Limelight, The Camera Eye +-: Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Witch Hunt, Vital Signs 5,4/10

Well, sure, fun throwback. But 3-5 minutes is more than enough time for the nostalgia. After that, it gets tedious.

ich bin keein rush guy s erste album vo 1001 isch rush gsi und ha nöd so geim gfunde. tom sawyer macht vieeeel sache und d sounds insgesamt findi meeega cool. ich bin kein fan vom geddy sinere stimm afoch. red barchetta het au wieder mega verscheideni teil und sie sind sehr virtuos und so abeeeeer äääähm. jo bin kein fan. limelight bis etz s beste cooli chords cooli hihat, s tönt afoch alles goofy woner seit. the camera eye findi etz mega pleasant? so d sounds und d chords und de bass geil und melodie mega happy. witch hunt get nüüüüt gmacht bi mir. glaub da git e 2. kartoffelsalat.

When prog rock is good, it's great. When it misses, it makes me cry. This is in the latter camp unfortunately. Will not remember one song from this album. Last part, after the 10min wander, was decent though. A 2* that is unfair but displays my disappointment.

Pretty good, not a huge fan of the vocalists voice. High 2.

26/11/24 Honestly do not get the hype around this.

Hmmmmmmmmm ekki alveg my scene held ég, peppandi samt, ekki alveg að hjálpa mér að einbeita mér að efnafræðilestrinum æjæj Limelight er reyndar geggjað úlala Fíla ekki space vibeið :( Witch hunt er reyndar líka alveg cool

I dont really like

It's like someone compulsively wiping their feet on Prog Rock's doormat, only to refuse to enter. Too bad.

I've tried to listen to Rush and they can FOJDO. Not for me.

More focus on music skills than songwriting, and that is never okay in my book. It’s not bad, Limelight and Tom Sawyer is okay, it’s just really dull

Metally

Some songs were okay, some not so good

I couldn't get into this at all. If it wasn't for the youtube adds between each track it would just have sounded like a single track lasing 40 minutes, played by a bunch of teenagers on instruments they bought from the toy section of Argos. I made it all the way through so it gets 2 stars ... just!

I actually just listened to this album under a week ago, funnily enough. The only song I kinda liked was YYZ. Just did not care for this at all

The wikipedia page mentioned that with this album Rush tried to make more radio friendly songs, and I think it benefits from that. Still not my thing, but I can sort of see why it would be others.

Not for me

So this is where that riff came from. I don’t know who I’m apologising to, but I’m sorry this sounds like a collection of generic rock songs that I’d play on a Guitar Hero 2 knockoff. A decent knockoff, but still.

No issue with prog rock , but i find this mostly uninteresting and really don’t like the singers voice .

I suffer from for apathy for this sort of proggy soft rock. I didn't like the vocalists' voice. It all just passed me by in a disinterested haze. I'm not saying the musicianship and songwriting is bad, it's just boring. As it didn't make my flesh creep like some on there, it gets a 2.

Na minha conta, o valor do baterista não superar a chatice do vocalista.

I did not enjoy the song structures. I did not enjoy the lyrics. And above all, I very much did not enjoy the vocal. I knew going in that I have an aversion to this guy's voice, I find it really grating. The parts of this album I disliked the least were the bits where he moved away from the mic. There's some entertaining guitar here and there, which is why it didn't score 1, but even that wears out its welcome by going too far. I will never willingly listen to this again.

5/10, listenable, not really my jam, liked a couple of the songs but prob won’t listen to most again

Fine music that’s good to passively listen to but I wouldn’t choose to listen to it

Terrible

I didn't enjoy this one at all. Just a bit too weird and a bit slow for me.

Excellently recorded, virtuoso playing, and the vocalist isn't as screechy as I remembered. But I have no space for this in my life.

Far dorkier than I thought.

Good rock band from the 80’s. Unique songs, unique voice. Some decent songs.

Very talented musicians, respect the hell out of Neil Peart...but I just couldn't get past Geddy's vocals.

A couple of classics but somewhat boring rest of album. 2/5

Fine album with clear sounds, but nothing so special that it needed to be on this list imo

Not my cup of tea

Didn’t this album already come up???

Thanks. No thanks

I get that Rush is/was incredibly talented but I just don’t enjoy their music or the vocals.

Always heard of Rush and never listened to them. Sounded like a tame version of Iron Maiden or similar. Not my jam but cool.

Metal fílingur sem var of penn og pródúseraður fyrir minn smekk en alveg la la inni á milli.

I’ve always struggled with these 70’s/80’s prog bands. As big of a music fan as I am, I’ve just never “gotten it”. That said, Rush is one of those bands that are beloved by a lot of people I respect - musician’s musicians, they say. So I resigned myself to give this album a really honest effort. And I tried, guys. I really did. But I just can’t convince myself that I like this. Idk if it’s Lee’s voice or something else, but this is the first album in this project that I actively dislike. Up until now, there have been albums that I thought were just ok, but this is the first album that I will rate below a 3. Maybe just chalk it up to me not being enough of an real musician to appreciate what they’re doing, but I’m sorry…this was just unpleasant to listen to. Also, hearing YYZ gave me PTSD remembering the countless hours spent in my teens trying to beat that song on Expert on Guitar Hero (I eventually got it). 2/5 Highlights: Tom Sawyer (I guess?)

I guess this is what’s called prof rock but with such distinct 80’s synths that I can’t take it seriously. Fine I suppose

I didn't really enjoy this one, nothing special and a bit tedious.

I am not a big Rush fan. I like them okay. But not a lot. I've never listened to a whole album at once. I liked this. Enough. I still wasn't blown away. My opinion of Rush is not changed by this.

Notable tracks: Tom Sawyer, Limelight

This is the period where progrock becomes corny, and I’m not in for the ride. Great musicianship all around, but the songs are not going anywhere, and I’m not fond of the vocals either.

not my jam

Meh. You got Tom Sawyer and Limelight. Other than that not much else.

Boring prog rock, can't understand the fascination with this 2*

music good, voice bad.

Not bad but nothing special here

What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high?

I know they supposedly have the greatest drummer of all time but I’ve never been able to tolerate this album

A bit prog rock.

Great playing and some solid melodies, but I cannot stand those vocals. I also find the lyrics overwrought. Not for me, sorry :P

A little commercialism goes along way in taming prog excesses. This is a tighter, more focused, and way less annoying version of Rush. Just write some rock songs, not a suite of pseudo classical nonsense with an overture ffs! The flanger and drums and then the riff to kick off Tom Sawyer is so damn good. YYZ sounds like a corny Joe Satriani track where there's an alien-style complicated backing track for some virtuoso guitar histrionics. The instrumental is a nice break from the piercing vocals though, yikes. Some great bass playing throughout, the guitar tones are all pretty cool and the drums patterns are intricate as you'd expect from a guy with 700 piece kit...

todas las canciones iguales que bodrio

wasn’t offensive but won’t listen again

Interesting - only got through the first couple tracks

Talented band with dedicated fans just not my thing. I liked the instrumental and Limelight though

Tom Sawyer will always be an epic needle drop. The rest of this - meh.

Was shocked to learn this was their eighth album, and best selling. Didn't love it.

it's so fine. like it's such a fine and uninteresting album. i see that there are things to like about it, but idk i'd rather listen to something else.

Moving Pictures by Rush represents a significant departure from their previous work, notably 2112. One notable critique is the tendency for songs to drag on, with extended instrumental sections that felt a bit unnecessary. Furthermore, Geddy Lee's vocals, often criticised for their high-pitched delivery, continue to divide opinions, echoing Stephen Malkmus's infamous quip about Lee's voice. Despite its shortcomings, Moving Pictures still boasts standout tracks like Red Barchetta and Limelight, showcasing Rush's technical prowess and knack for thought-provoking lyrics. However, these highlights are overshadowed by moments where the album feels bloated and indulgent. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 0 STAND OUT TRACK - None

Fanatiek prog rock hater hier. 6/10 Highlights: YYZ Vital Signs

My only prior knowledge of Rush came from I Love You Man. I’m not sure if it’s changed my opinion on the film knowing that Rush sound this bad. Shhlappa da bass man

Never was much of a rush fan so first time listening to a whole album. Don’t really like the vocal style. The drummer is impressive but it’s not for me.

Exactly as I would imagine a Rush album to sound. I'm not impressed 2.3/5

I can imagine this album being exciting at the time, particularly as Tom Sawyer kicks off with some impactful power chords and exciting drumming fills. However, the instrumentation is incredibly dated and the singer’s voice reminds me of the guy from Zebra, but not in a good way. Overall, very hard to listen to for someone who wasn’t a 13-15yo North American when it was released.

this sucks lol

What I’m sure was a standout for its time now just sounds pretty dated. There wasn’t much I enjoyed beyond “Tom Sawyer.”

Each component of this band is technically great, but I struggle to find any magic in the final product. Most songs sound the same and didn't really stick with me at all

I wish I could give it a 2 1/2. Do I like the songs individually? Yes. Do I want to listen to an entire Rush album? No. It was too much Rush. Which is weird, because they are not a particularly hard sound or super unpleasant sound. On a side note the album sort of reminded me of every theme song from an 80's action cartoon.

I just cannot get into Rush. I respect Prog and what it’s trying to achieve but this is just not for me. Pass.

I love the cover art of this album but that's all really. Favourite: "YYZ" skips: "tom sawyer" "witch hunt"

Was better than I thought it would be but I still don’t like the singers voice

My Canadian shame is that I don’t like Rush.

Eh, eh?

It's giving Duran Duran (derogatory) They really like their guitar solos huh?

Странный, много намешано, где-то почти всю песню играют инструменталы, будто музыка для режиссёров, чтоб они вставляли её в свои фильмы. Чем-то похоже на прогрессивный рок.

When I say that Rush was the soundtrack to my high school years I mean it literally. Because back in the day the boys in my high school would carry big boomboxes through the hallways and Rush was what they played. Didn’t like them then, turns out I still don’t like them. Apart from the unpleasant vocals, they tend to repeat each riff just long enough to annoy me before moving on. I am very aware that this band is well-loved and this will be a controversial review but I call em like I hear em.

I understand the musical talent involved in this but when the songwriting isn’t very catchy and there’s no clear messages to latch onto, it removes you from the technically impressiveness of it all

NOT for me

I'm more familiar with modern prog and I'm not a huge fan of the genre... I kind of feel that the style is musically adventurous but doesn't really have an ear for rhythm, engaging stylistic moments etc. This to me sounds like the grandaddy of that whole genre so kind of encapsulates all those good and bad bits I'm familiar with. Was a nice listen but I wouldn't return to it

Ganz OK. Aber nicht zum nebenbei hören.

i didn’t hate this, i actually quite liked a lot of it, especially limelight, it was cool at times and interesting but i honestly think it was mostly forgettable…

4/10 - None of the songs were great but none were bad. Some were too long. Nothing surprised me.

Never heard before. Can't say this did much for me. Some interesting musical directions, bad singing. can see why some might enjoy, but I can't see myself going back to it.

Struggled to get through this. I appreciated some of the guitar playing and keyboards, but I find Geddy Lee’s voice really annoying, and I couldn’t really follow the melodies.

Didn't leave much of an impression. Not bad, but definitely nothing outstanding to me. Boring.

This is a great band for someone out there, but not my cup of tea. They have annoyingly complicated time signatures, which can be cool in metal music, but confusing with rock. This is some soft ass nerd cheese mountain dew neckbeard D&D type shit.

Like so much other 80s prog rock, this album suffers from a lack of tonal variety, especially on Side A. Geddy Lee's monotonous voice doesn't help. This get a bit more interesting in the last few tracks, but overall this wasn't anything special. Favorite tracks: Tom Sawyer, Vital Signs

Niks voor mij

One of those bands which can play very good, which have ideas, which - of course - have their fanbase. But, sorry, I did not connect to the music. I suppose if you grew up with it, you will like it. But I do not!

Not my music

It was just alright

2+ Stars (6/15)

Это прог-рок полотно - как сложная задача по физике: Напрягался пока решал, в итоге решил, кайфанул от процесса, почувствовал себя профессором. И только спустя 5 минут понял - а нахуя она мне нужна, физика эта.....

dad music

Lucky canadians, they have the Wainwrights...

Wow I’m uninspired

I can’t take them seriously. I think it’s their voices.

I liked a couple of the songs but overall it wasn't for me. I was a little let down because my exposure to Rush has been low, but I know some of my relatives say Rush is their favorite band.

i liked listening to this but none of it was rly memorable

honestly had no idea what rush sounded like and my favorite track was the one without vocals lmao

sounds troll

A Couple of Insightful Songs I saved. Don't really like their style of music.

I can see the appeal but it’s not my thing.

Song: Tom Sawyer I have never listened to a Rush song, and I can safely say I don't think I'm a fan. It started out okay, but as the song went on, Geddy Lee's voice really started to grate on me. He has a very whiny tone, especially on the higher notes, and I could barely get through it. However, I liked the guitar & synths, the instrumental break & the guitar solo in the middle were my favorite parts. I'm still unlikely to listen again, but I suppose it wasn't all bad.

I like the drum sound…rhythmically…especially the base drum. Red Barchetta is about a profane car. What effort the music seems to have, it’s just about a car. Makes it lifeless and cold. I like the music…but I would like it without the lyrics a bit more.

Not really my type of music but if I ignored the vocals the instrumentation was actually pretty good. I really like YYZ.

Yeah, Prog Rock! What a fan I have been in my time in the early 80ies. Always more drawn to the Genesis / Pink Floyd / Yes / King Crimson. I tapped into Rush occasionally but it was sort of too technical for me. Rush always came across like an act where virtuosity came before songcraft. Relistening today just confirmed it, 40 years later.

nicht so meins, guter grundgroove. rock halt.

Just to much 80s Synth and rummgeniedel. Plus they are Ayn Rand fans, YUK!

Track 1. To my ears an average rock song with electronic sci-fi (synths?) added. 4/10 Not a fan of the general sound Track 2. More high energy feel to the song, average solo doesn’t add to the track much. To my ears has a very movie soundtrack feel to it. 6.5/10 Track 3. More of a metal feel to the start of the song which i prefer. Purely instrumental i liked 6.5/10 Track 4. Again with the whiney sounding vocals, not a big fan of them. However this album continues to provide a nostalgic vibes to the 80s. However i enjoyed this song 7/10 Track 5. Slower start to it, initial instrumentals start with a electronic modern feel and turn to a darker more metallish vibe. Whiny vocals continue. The lyrics are about cities? Hard to work out with the nasaly vocals 3/10 Track 6. At this point just waiting for the end of the album after track 5, dark atmospheric start if the song befitting the name. Better song, however the songs have a cringey quality amplified by the vocals, very much a product of its time 5.5/10 Track 7. Electronic start again with the synths, stronger song than most, instrumental and vocals make it a more enjoyable listen 6.5/10 Overall 4/10 some listenable tracks but overall not my kinda album

Couple of good songs but generally leaves me cold. Don’t like the singer's voice.

Bland MOR rock.

Nja, det här är väl inte min grej riktigt.

don't like. music and lyrics all very silly. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Rush, distilled into a radio-friendly format. I particularly enjoyed the interplay between Lifeson, Lee and Peart.

Oh boy. The reputation of this album precedes it. I've seen it come up in a few lists and given a few attempts to listen but never found a reason to come back. On this listen, the best track was easily YYZ. The second best was The Camera Eye, which despite its length had some really engaging moments. The thing that drags this album down into oblivion for me though is the lyrical and vocal performance. The lyrics are trite and cringeworthy, and the vocal delivery takes the interesting musicianship and sends it to the dumpster. Which is a shame. With a few tweaks, this could have been one of the greatest and most celebrated bands. All the ingredients were there but they were squandered on a mediocre recipe.

To me this was unremarkable.

Obviously I knew "Tom Sawyer" and I knew "Limelight" even though I never knew the name before now. Prog Rock is hit or miss for me. There's a reason why the popular singles ARE the popular singles, and the others are more obscure.

Feels outdated :(

Never was a big fan of Rush. I always saw them as one of the more "bland" prog rock groups. They seemed to make a lot of pop-oriented hits in their time. There is no shortage of those on this record. Many 60s and 70s bands scrambled to maintain relevancy in the 80s. Rush was able to modify their sound to suit the new decade's pop sounds. Although I'm not a huge fan of this record, the drumming was outstanding as always.

I listened to it but don't remember shit

There are some good things to be said about this record. The obvious point is the musicianship. It is impressive. Geddy Lee's bass tone is frigging amazing. It truly bends my mind to think that this is a three-piece. The proggyness of offends me, though. Songs about Tom Sawyer??? No. I can't deal with it. I find that so off-putting that I can't see myself listening to it again, despite all the positive things it brings.

like the hard rock, hate the 80's in the sound

Prog rock for people that don't like prog rock

menos pior do que imaginei mas ainda nao

bored, I feel like its nothing new, I have probably heard it before. like it was objectively good, not for me. Least fave song: witch-hunt favourite song: YYZ

第一首第一句印象深刻,但是后面的都不太爱听,我听不懂电子乐器solo。最后一首的前奏也还行,之前听过。

Hørt et par sanga. Orka ikke meir. Not my style. Sikkert bra elns.

Decent upbeat rock rhythms, but nothing that really stayed with me. No songs familiar to me from before.

Upbeat older rock, nice but not my style.

It's OK, but the singer sounds like a little goblin man and I can't get past it

well, hello there "The 80s"

Not to my liking.

This is probably the worst Rush album. It's just....not good. At all. It actually hurts a bit inside because its so bland.

Never been a big fan of prog rock. Tom Sawyer is a good song at least

Two stars because Bubbles loves them, and because they're nerdy Canadians, and because Alex Lifeson seems like a genuinely wonderful human. But while Geddy's bass is solid, his voice is everything bad about post-Zepplin male vocalists - nails on a chalkboard. They can play, "Tom Sawyer" is fun, and they're probably fun live, but this is barely listenable.

Rather boring. "Tom Sawyer" has over 100mil listens on Spotify and it doesn't move me at all.

standard 70's fare.

Not bad now

Tom Sawyer // Limelight //

not bad but I don't like it and it's pretty forgettable

Not my style

Tom Sawyer was good. The rest of it was mostly repetitive synth-rock from there, with no real standout tracks

I recognise Tom Sawyer, but i didn't know it was from them, the voice of Geddy Lee is very unique and powerfull, pretty good prog rock, accually probably one of the best (after Pink Floyd of course) In General, the music didn't stick to my mind, i'm not very into prog rock, but i didn't dislike it either. +they come from Canada and it was reccorded in Morin Heights, Québec, and i come from Québec so its pretty cool that a band that big reccorded a big success like this in Québec.

Not sure. Reminds me of Yes, Caravan, Camel, and various other British prog-rock bands. Not bad, but nothing really excited me.

Nervig

This is not good cooking music. But that's exactly what it became anyway.

Someone once told me Rush was a creepy wizard band and I have never forgotten that. They are a combination of supernerd, theater kid, and band kid wrapped up into one. I've never been the coolest ice cube in the freezer but even for me this is a bit much. However, I will give credit that this album has some iconic songs that are essential 80s music knowledge. We all know which 2 I'm talking about. And there's some interesting musical styling going on. Personally though I think the best Rush song is Fly By Night. I'm on a tangent now but long story short, I don't need to listen to Rush again anytime soon, please and thank you.

This sounds so much like the songs that play over the credits to 80s movies. Probably very good but not for me.

Not really my vibe

Middle of the road dad rock. Eh.

Not a huge fan of Rush but will keep an open mind.

Led zeppelin with synthesisers. Did pretty much nothing for me, one of my least least favourite classic rock flavours. Bumping this up to 2 stars because at least XYZ was an interesting track. Fav track : XZY

This did very little for me. All the elements of prog/heavy/glam I dislike were on show. Indulgent, underwhelming and long instrumentals were rife. Vocals I found largely irritating, although I concede this is purely personal taste. I did enjoy the final two songs. When the heavier elements were supported by a synthy back beat or were much more atmospheric. Infact the final two tracks were pretty stellar. I can see why people would get into this, just ain't for me. Strong 2 Fav track: Vital signs

Ok album but nothing special

Hey, I gave this a listen. Sounds great. Production must have been. Really good. But it’s just not my bag. I missed Rush totally. Probably the main reason was that I read an article about them early on & as soon as I read that they were Ayn Rand fans, I scrubbed them. But I can see why they were popular.

I want to like Rush, and this is the album I _would_ like if I liked Rush. But I just don't.

Odd and uninspiring.

Well, I've finally sat through a Rush album in its entirety. 2/5

não achei nada de mais o álbum, rock legal, algumas músicas instrumentais gostei mais do que as cantadas pq não curti muito o estilo vocal do vocalista.

Not my style

Unfortunately, I think I hate Rush.

Cool as f opening. Then goes into long long guitar solos which I hate

Just don't get this. Voted the best album of the 80's on Facebook? It's not bad but then again it's mediocre.

Pozabila sem, da se včasih niso bali pisati dolgih pesmi. Sicer pa o tej skupini ne vem ničesar, čeprav sem ime že slišala. Ni zame tole.

Not my cup of tea

These fuckers always just give me a hangover. And I don't even drink.

I can appreciate it, but it's just not my jam.

Mistäköhän se Rush-hype syntyy?

While Tom Sawyer is great (the reason this isn't a 1 star), the rest of the album shows all of the excesses of Rush. 11 minutes songs that never get to the point. Meaningless lyrics that flow into meaningless instrumentals.

To my core, I am a Rush hater

No. Not a Rush fan at all.

Prog hard rock, fantasy-vibes

Rock music your normal dad would praise as "when they still made good music". Not my dad though

I don't like the voice of the singer.

Not bad, not my fav.

Started out ok, went off the deep end.

Listened to this twice through. Looking at other comments in guessing I just didn't get it. I'll give them props for this being 1981 but aside from that, it just didn't sound very special to me.

Not really my cup of tea

Prog rock yawn

I honestly don’t love instrumental breaks in songs like in Tom Sawyer. To me they kind of break up the song. I still liked it though. I think it would have made my playlist without those. Also not a huge fan of fade-outs, but I get that they used to be a lot more popular than they are now. I also don’t really love songs without vocals like YYZ. They’re fine, but not something I would listen to unless to just put on in the background and kind of tune out. I liked the vocal section of the camera eye but it was WAY too long with too many instrumental sections for my taste. Not my taste overall.

Why did I believe Rush was an instrumental band?! Wow, these lyrics suck and are sung in super uninspired melodies. So yeah, The Camera Eye is pretty neat, some cool changes – OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE HE'S SINGING AGAIN! Not shaming anyone for being into the dorky, corny stuff, but this is not even the best of that genre, and they're not singing about elves preparing to war and running through meadows admiring the fantastical flora and fauna even though they sound like they should. I like the idea of Rush according to what fans will tell you, but I love none of this; We have Math Rock and The Mars Volta now, old men! Best described by the fact that you will likely call it prog rock if you like it and hard rock or classic rock if you don't.

I think "Wane" would be a better name for this band. Blah.

trying it but 2 or 3 is early guess.

obviously a 'classic' but i don't dig it. don't really like the singer, synths, or butt rock guitar. i might be able to fux wit some of their earlier stuff.

Another prog band I wasn't into because I'd been lied to that all prog was bad. Constantly skipped past Rush in record shops while looking for R.E.M. 12"s. Only Rush song I heard until relatively recently was something about trees, and I was not a fan. Tom Sawyer is fucking ace. Strangely first got into this by playing it on Beat Saber after Neil Peart died. So that very much dates my lateness. Love the shifting rhythms. Geddy Lee's vocals are going to be the sticking point for me here I think, because they're pretty annoying. Can not argue with his bass work though. YYZ is epic. Ungh, couple of tracks later I've got to admit I'm drifting off. I think I'm very much hit or miss with Rush. Witch Hunt grabbed my attention back, decent. Now there's some sort of Sting reggae shit going on. Ah, the last track. Ok, overall, not for me, but some great individual tracks. Not an entirely unexpected reaction, to be honest. Ha, everybody got mixed feelings. You are correct.

This kinda sucks 2

Eugh what did I think of this - something dads in the 90s listen to and not my cup of tea.

p483. 1981. 1970s Canadian-American prog-rockers, and that in itself should be enough warning. I can't stand Geddy Lee's vocals, he sounds like his testicles have only just dropped. You could put him in a room with Jon Anderson and Roger Hodgson and have your own boys choir. And as with all things prog-rock, there is excessive musical wankage. Not my thing at all.

I want to like Rush, and this is the album I _would_ like if I liked Rush. But I just don't.

It seems appropriate to play this while playing video games. I’m playing Lego Avengers with Guardians of the Galaxy. It ties to well with them. I’m not into jam rock really.

Not my type of music

I expected to be able to give this 4 stars, but when listening to it again, I quickly got irritated by the music, not to mention the high-pitched vocals. I think I might actually prefer the earlier albums.

Too clean and well produced. Sounds like it's shiny almost. Too studio for me
