Reviews (page 8 of 11)
Siouxsie And The Banshees were responsible for an outstanding string of singles, but their album cuts unfortunately don't live up to that same standard. *Juju* is no exception. This album contains two exceptional songs (the magnificent "Spellbound" and the hypnotic-but-lyrically-bizarre "Arabian Knights") but the remaining tracks are fairly generic post-punk that's long on atmosphere but short on hooks.
Perfectly average. No notes
Good overall
Less annoying than punk, but a hard edge to it. Interesting guitar tones, really trebly. Dark and angry.
Off the cuff remark: A very long time since I have listened to a whole Siouxsie album, a favourite when I was 17/18 and it has been a pleasure. Not much else that sounds like them. Standout track: Spellbound Revisit?: Yes, I think I will be looking through some other albums too..
It took me a minute to really get into it, but it's a solid 80s punk album. Her singing is probably the best part of the album, and while it is really good, it doesn't really elevate the album to elite levels for me. None of the songs felt particularly noteworthy either. The reason I put Spellbound as my favorite is that I went back to it for a little bit before finally putting the album away. Favorite Song(s): Spellbound
Interesting listen, a bit dark for a summer afternoon in July. Can definitely see how it influenced things to come.
Despite being perennially present during my youth I didn't get into **Siouxsie and the Banshees** until much later. My goth fix mainly came from **The Sisters of Mercy**, **The Cult**, **Fields of the Nephilim**, **The Cure**, and **The Mission**. Truth be told I think I had a problem with female lead vocalist and it took a while to see past my youthful prejudices. Although I'm still somewhat picky about female lead vocals. Anyway, this album starts strong with “Spellbound,” the opening track, which is one of their most famous songs. It sets a high bar for the rest of the album. “Arabian Knights” follows suit, showcasing that distinct blend of Eastern influences and darkwave sensibilities that the Banshees mastered. However, the album tails off toward the end. After the intensity of the opening tracks, songs like "Head Cut" and “Voodoo Dolly” feel a bit more subdued or repetitive. While they still have that signature atmospheric quality, the energy dips slightly, and the mood becomes a bit too introspective and brooding.
Not bad
Pretty good. Not really my cup of tea usually.
This is the last album of the week. "Juju" is a pretty cool album in my opinion. "Arabian Nights" is the best of the nine tracks here. It's a shame "Spellbound" was a poor start for "Juju". Also, I'm getting tired of early 80s post-punk. 3 stars for "Juju".
Brings me back to highschool, varied gothy post punk. Fantastic all the way through and might be my favorite album of theirs, though I haven't listened their entire discog. - Mitona “Sin in my Heart” is my pick for favorite track of the album. The progression of instruments with vocal wailing to crescendo is sick. - SpaceCrabs A absolute post punk masterpiece and timeless goth classic. -Germoses
Instrumentally I love everything about this album, especially those sour guitars drenched in chorus. I wonder if they were a big influence for Dry Cleaning The singing really ruins this album for me. It’s very blondie Esq, not sure if there’s a name for this style but I’m not a fan of it. Very dramatic and annoying. I really really like the instrumentals but I’ve got to give it a three for those vocals, can’t stand them. Fav tracks - Spellbound - Into the light - Arabian Knights - Halloween - Monitor - Sin in my heart - Head cut Worst tracks - Voodoo dolly
This is so far removed from what I would choose to listen to, so much that I have actively avoided Siouxsie & The Banshees material as much as possible. Anyway, this site has taught me to forget my preconceptions and judge music on it's merits, and this was actually better than I was expecting. There were tracks that I found quite jarring/grating but as many tracks (especially the opener) were actually quite good. I think 3 stars is about right for me.
Kind of a electro Gothic vibe with at times almost belligerently repetitive, almost monotonic melodies. Feel like I can hear the seeds of acts as different as The Pretenders and The B-52s.
Decent, I enjoyed yeah
Great post punk album.
It was ok
Not my usual type of music. 3 out of 5 still though.
felt like going to a show at a dive bar in the sense that it was really fun and sexy for the first few tracks but then started feeling rlly repetitive/one note and i wanted to leave midway through to get a beer and linger at the bar for a few songs to kill time so that by the time i got back it would hopefully be over some fun percussion throughout (vibraslap???? castinets??? hell ya)
A decent album. Far less punky and aggressive than I was anticipating. Still not one of my prefers genres but I kind of liked it and glad I’ve heard it as I’d never given the band a look in previously.
Quite musical punk. Again it's something I could get into if I were to give it the opportunity. It's just a shame they didn't use the proper spelling of Bain Sidhe. 3 for it's potential.
A decent listen, until ‘Voodoo Dolly, which was a weak end to a good album.
Aweful!
I wasn't 'spellbound' by this. The opening half was strong but the last half felt too samey.
Likte denne
Not what I expected, after decades of about hearing how edgy this is, its kinda pedestrian.
Kult
Ganske greit, men står isje ut te mg sånn ekstremt
Never heard any of this before. Surprised, liked more than expected. Interesting that Spellbound is the single as I find that one of the weaker tracks. Into the light Halloween
cool
Surprised me
Interesting album- liked it more than I thought I would.
Funny coincidence, was listening to this only yesterday. I think I'm beginning to get into the whole post punk/goth sound. Would I have enjoyed it as much as I did if it weren't for the dark goth imagery surrounding this music? Hmm...debatable. Whatever it is, I enjoyed this more on the second (or third?) listen. Actual rating: 3.5 stars. Would I revisit this: yes.
Rocky with a touch of folkiness with the vocals and the acoustic layers; some driven guitars and chugging bass, rocky drums; then some acoustic guitar in the background.
All I can say to start is that this is definitely a different sound than I'm used to. Siouxsie's vocal prowess is enchanting and almost hypnotic, which provides an intriguing ritual. What really got me the use of incredibly unique instrumentals and out of the ordinary guitar parts that fascinatingly draw you in. The thing I'm struggling with is that I wish the entirety of the album carried the same energy "Spellbound" hits you with right off the bat. The middle bit of the album just felt a tick too slow in comparison with that kind of introduction. Due to this reason, some of the songs felt similar and repetitive, also due to Siouxsie's vocal inflection not fluctuating much (except for in Head Cut). I think this would have been helped with some sort of backing vocals or harmonies, which I was surprised to hear none of. Regardless, this put me out of my comfort zone and I think I'd listen to it from time to time. 3/5 stars.
Definitely top heavy. They aren't great with sustaining a full album but it's still good.
I thought this was just ok. Spellbound was a great opener and I loved the guitars in that song, but everything after failed to catch my attention that much. Mid 3.
A raw album - it's an early entry to the grunge/garage rock genre that was a predecessor to the bands that came to dominate the rock genre in years to come.
solid. was gonna give this very high marks but it got sleepy in the car and in the music...
The Banshees' drummer sure loves his toms. Siouxsie's vocals are passionate if lacking in range. The most impressive thing about this album is its 1981 release date -- Juju clearly prefigures a lot of the New Wave music that was just around the corner.
point1.
MadPlanetpilled. Previously listened to 3 songs off of this album (Spellbound; Arabian Knights; Monitor) Siouxsie is a quintessential artist at the alternative dance club I frequent; I've never been super interested in her when stacking her up against her contemporaries, but I'm glad I could finally add her to my musical encyclopedia. While I wasn't entirely compelled by the album as a whole, I'm still intrigued enough to want to explore more of her work Favorite Song: Monitor
I like to say that I like most music and, yeah, I mean this music is all right, but I am not in love with this. I don't really want to keep listening. I don't want to put it on again.
haft svårt att bedöma detta men det får bli en trea. en stark sådan. monitor är en av dom bästa låtarna på länge. men i övrigt är det liite för weird emellanåt.
Found out that I was listening to Spellbound from this album. Eventually that's the only song I've liked from this album...
Very blondie never heard of them before
"Juju" is a further evolution from their debut album "The Scream". While it retains the post-punk and gothic influences, it introduces a pop sensibility and new wave synth elements that enhance its enjoyment and engagement Similar to their debut, the drumming serves as a foundational element that propels the tracks, complemented by unconventional, raw, and occasionally jangly guitars, alongside captivating vocals Another album that evokes a sense of nostalgia for my teenage years in the 1980s.
I enjoyed this for a while, but by the end of a full album of it it just kind of sounded like I was underwater. 3.5, probably 4 if only listening to a few at a time.
That absolutely rocked. Confidently never listened to a track from Siouxsie & The Banshees before. Really fun stuff!
Blind album and artist. Started strong and lost me completely at the end. Imbalanced but unique and dark.
It sounds ahead of its time, but that doesn't necessarily mean I like it all that much. Not bad, but not great.
Siouxsie and the Banshees are the Jefferson Airplane of goth, not just because of an enigmatic female singer but also because their albums have one or two clear classics (Spellbound : White Rabbit) and the rest of the record is not quite at that level.
This is cool but I don't love it. I'm not sure if there's a better Siouxsie record for me, or if I'm just a poseur who only appreciates the hits.
I can't do better than alex-v-cook's review. So...ditto!
Good start, somewhat monotoneous at the halfway mark
choice bangers and plenty of weaker sound-alikes
Spellbound e jævlig bra, men fortsatt ikkje mitt favoritt post punk-band
This is different, I could feel the energy, but also felt I came about 30 years too late to discover this intense record.
First listen, punchy, dig it, but repetitive
Esta guapo, quizá no tuvimos el dia
Not quite as good as the Scream, but I liked it for similar reasons as that one. Once again the vocals are the most interesting part. Favorite Track: Sin In My Heart
Spellbound is a pleasant, nice opener. Loved the guitar and the vocals, not heard of this band before but an enjoyable listen. Definitely feels ahead of its time across some songs. 7/10.
Okay
Почему это считается чем-то выдающимся?
I’m seeing a lot of high praise for this record, and unfortunately I don’t feel the same way. The vocals are solid, but way too many of the tracks and riffs sound too similar.
It's not bad. I'm kinda surprised I'd not heard of them. It's a decent album but without the nostalgia I'm not excited for it. Some of the tunes I've enjoyed but overall I'm kinda meh on it, I want to listen to it again to be sure. On a second listen I appreciate it more but it's not going to get added to the rotation outside of a song or two. I am suggesting it to a friend though. I think it's more up her alley than mine.
First off, I love the vocal performance from Siouxsie. She brings an enthralling and commanding tone that can heard throughout the album. It started off great with Spellbound but when it gets past Monitor every song just feels like a rinse and repeat of everything listened to so far. It's not so much that is bad but it's that it's mediocre and disappointing. Overall it was still pretty good. Top 3: Spellbound (Best), Arabian Knights, and Monitor / Honorable Mention: Into The Light Bottom 2: Voodoo Dolly and Head Cut 3.0-3.25/5
Good wee listen
7 out of 10
6.5
This was a darker and heavier album than I was expecting. Much more enjoyable than I would have imagined.
Spellbound // Into The Light // Night Shift // 3.5/5
Love me some Siouxsie Sioux, but just not this complete album all that much.
I like their other stuff more
I wish the energy of the first few songs stayed through the album
Not bad. Sort of got an 80’s new wave-ish vibe that leans goth. Think Cure/Joy Division/Concrete Blonde. Felt like this could have been the soundtrack to The Craft. Spooky bitches probably ate this shit up.
I liked this one more than I thought I would. Wikipedia has it listed as post-punk before gothic rock, but I'm getting more gothic rock here. Reminds me of those albums we did by The Cure - just a bit more listenable.
It has its moments. Definitely a classic
3 Stars (8/15)
I was surprised to see this album was from the early 80’s. I found it to have a lot of elements I hear more in early/mid 90’s grunge/indie rock. Fun album that was ahead of its time.
Heel aardig dat ze de beste drie nummers als laatste zetten. Wel echt goede nummers
Some interesting bits but I wasn't totally blown away? Seems unfair for such a revered band.
Well, yes, this is much better than I expected when I saw another album of this band in my queue. But still, I find the music and the singer's voice quite unappealing, so I doubt I will listen to this again. 2.5/5
Listened to this one already on my other account think I gave it a 3
Siouxsie Sioux! My middle school friend Melissa was very into her, so I learned how to pronounce that name at an early age, but I never actually listened to a single track until now. It's OK. Not really my thing, but I don't hate it. This is like a 2.5, but I'll round up because a lot of my favorite artists (and Moso) seem to like them. Highlight: 'Into the Light'
I will probably never listen to this again, but I didn't hate it.
Siouxsie and her Banshees bring their A game, along with a heaping helping of floor tom on this album. If you're ready to get on the same wavelength with it, Juju has a lot to offer in the way of goth dance music. The vocals are particularly impressive throughout, even if some of the instrumentation leaves me a bit unfulfilled.
2.5
Noisey, angsty, and rythmic. Driving at times with visceral instrumentation. Blends into hardcore at times which is pretty interesting. Not entirely my speed, I enjoyed thought. Good for the experience. Not sure if you have to listen to it before I die.
I get it, dark and gloomy, just not my cup of tea... I'd have to say 3 tops...
As a punk fan I am aware of the influence of Siouxie and her influence on Goth and I like the album well enough but not gonna change my life
Grand pop-rock with unpleasant female vocal.
Preferred the first half to the second but not sure I’d listen to these songs regularly
Fav song: Halloween Really cool sounding guitars on this one. The arrangements and the vocal melodies are so intensely 80s sounding it's hard to ignore - sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. I kinda love that floppy sounding 80s style drum production though.
I’ll be honest, it was better than I expected it to be. I’m not sure I think it was *good,* but I can definitely see why this band is so influential. Firstly the bad: I cannot stand her voice. I don’t really like the punk affectation in general, so that’s no real surprise. That said, it doesn’t sound out of place. Like, in isolation, it’s shit, but with the music it sort of fits, if that makes sense. And so the good: it’s super creative. It definitely sounds like what is is: an 80s, punk-inspired, alt-rock, grunge precursor. But what makes it so influential is that this album was released before alt-rock was really a thing and WAY before grunge. I can’t give it a 4 because I didn’t love it and I don’t really need to hear it again, but it almost deserves a 4 for its creativity and its future-proofed sound. 3.5
I liked Arabian knights the best.
Some pretty dope songs but not my thing really
I have been meaning forever to get to these guys. This was solid ,some nice energy and cool songs. I am going to have to give it a further listen to focus in on Mr. McGeoch's guitar.
Stark 3a, kul album
Meh
#467. Decent, but nothing that seems to stand out from the crowd I think. 3/5: acceptable
This album is very compelling. It has a way of drawing me in. Her vocals are so rich and the lyrics so introspective. All while the band maintains a driving sound with intriguing embellishments. The tracks are varied enough to keep you on your toes, while maintaining a central theme.
Okay, good.
Pretty cool, should look into more
Very enjoyable, I can see why this band had so much influence on punk
• Like the last one, I have listened to this before, but not in a while. My favorite Siouxie & the Banshees material is Hyaena and this bootleg FM broadcast from 1981 I downloaded last year (From The Cradle Bars: Live At The De Nieuwe Kade, Tiel, Holland), but I don’t think I’ve really delved that deep into the discography. The live recording has a bunch of the earlier stuff, but just sounds a little livelier than the studio recordings, so I just haven’t peeped them when I want to hear the band. Anyhow, it’s good. I think I would like this specific Siouxsie & the Banshees record more if it hadn’t been an influence on a lot of 2000s indie rock that I don’t like. Great album overall and the closer (Voodoo Doll) is excellent. But, still, not my favorite from them that I have heard.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. 2.67
Previously rated: The Scream (3/5) *********************** I remember their other album being more punk. This one is more goth rock. I enjoyed the first half pretty well, especially the first four tracks, leaning towards a 4/5, but the last few songs were long and dragged the back half down as a result. Overall, it averages out to being average.
Not wild, not unmissable. Decent tho
Am I the only one who thinks that Siouxsie sounds like Geddy Lee? This wasn't my favorite thing, but gets points for originality. 3
Really liked so much about this album-great sound and overall good songs. A solid 3-3.5, but the last track is pretty anti-climactic, so rounding down to 3. Iconic dark wave sound.
Not my favorite album I’ve listened to. Maybe it’s just not for me. It’s still a great album tho
On first listen, about a 7.5/10. Lots of strong points such as her vocals and the guitar, but there are some songs that don't catch my attention too much and Arabian knights is a very confusing song lyrically. I feel like this album could be a grower though.
Decent album, not my favorite.
Punky fish
Gimme that ladyrock—Siouxsie's in the queue
Not bad but not great either
This whole album should be in scott pilgrim vs the world. badass female vocals though not as cool as like le tigre. Bet this went wild in the 80s though, vocals are so B-52s
This is enough phun for me to listen to once. It is enough phun for many people to listen to twice. It’s enough phun for a few people to listen to all the time. For me, once is enough. I get it, got it. I know what you’re all about. I’m really not interested in seeing what else you got, but this was enjoyable enough. 3/5
I have always liked the idea of Siouxsie and the Banshees better than actually listening to them…
Got a bit tired of it by the end but I appreciate them. Spellbound is a clear stand out but the rest of the album carries that same energy. Overall a 3 as it's not my fave style in the world
Buen álbum, me gusta el sonido y la energía, debería seguir re escucharlo. Total del álbum: 71
Never heard this before as tended to avoid goth music due to my own preconceived opinions that were based on no actual experience. More fool me, what a good record, how to maintain a haunting atmosphere throughout but with melodic rock and pop hooks, great vocals energy and just more fun than I expected. Will definitely listen again.
I liked it. A mix of 80s goth and new wave. I've heard some of their stuff before, but never a whole album.
I dug it. Prob over a 3 but not quite a 4 for me. I really liked Into the Light as a song (especially the guitar riff) but wanted a different production for my taste. I’d love to see someone do a modern cover of that.
Probably not something I'd listen to regularly, but decent post-punk.
good fun
Enjoyed this, though the vocals are a bit grating
Spiky post punk sub psychedelic songs.
1. Spellbound - Tykkään instrumentaalista, tykkään vokaaleista, tykkään miltä sanat kuulostaa. Hyvät vibat. Hauska laukkakomppi. Kyllä. 2. Into the light - Tykkään tästä vielä enemmän ku edellisestä. Tykkään sanoista, tykkään fiiliksestä ja intrumentaali taas tosi kiva ja mielenkiintoinen. 3. Arabian knights - En aluks ihan pitäny niin paljoa kuin edellisistä, tuntui jotenkin itseään toistavalta, MUTTA viimeinen kolmas osa nostatti kappaleen lähellä kahta edellistä ja kyllä mä silti pidin. 4. Halloween - Tykkään miltä kappale kuulostaa. Sanat melko meh vaikka osin ihan vekkulit. 5. Monitor - Albumilla on selkee tietyn tyyppinen soundi. Tässä 5 kappaleen kohdalla tuntuu jotenkin raskaalta? Kuulostaa melko samalta kun jo kuullut kappaleet vaikka toki ovat erilaisia. Tässä kaipaa ilmanraikastinta. Sanat on eh. 6. Night shift - Alko kivasti. Vähän erilaisempi ku edelliset muttei paljoa sit kuitenkaan. Sanat ok. Ok kokonaisuudessaan mut jotain puuttuu. Myös tosi pitkä. Turhan pitkä. 7. Sin in my heart - Paras since n.3. Tykkäsin sanoista ja tykkäsin taustasta. Antoi voimia viimeisiin kappaleisiin. 8. Head cut - Outo kappale toki tarkoituksella. Sillain ihan viihdyttävä kun sanat mitä ne on. Instrumentaali sopii teemaan. Kertakuunteluna ihan kiva mutta tulevaisuutta en ihan näe. 9. Voodoo dolly - Pitkä, mut jotenki ihan hauska. Ei niin tunkkanen. Joo en tiijä mitä sanoa muuta, ihan fine ig.
Best Song: Monitor Worst Song: Voodoo Doll
Uma pitada de punk com eletrônica. Lançou tendências! Não fiquem somente nos sucessos radiofônicos, você pode se arrepender.
Its fine
Dark....reminded me of Yellowjackets
Feels very influenced by Joan Jett in a fun way. Grant made reference to the singer sounding like the singer from Rush which also felt similar sounding
Dramatic but listenable. Singer reminded me of Rush or the lady from Jefferson Airplane
I enjoyed her unique voice and the album played pretty solid.
3.5★. Really enjoyed this.
3.5 Enjoyed it
# 361 : They've done a pretty decent job, It's alright, it’s enjoyable, fun and just experimental and punky enough to make people think they’re smart because they listen to it. Halloween is worth a listen,
10/11/24 The album was okay.
pre: I know the name and some of their place in late-70s London, but I don't know that I've ever really listened to them. I'm not sure what to make of this album. It's a 3 on my scale in that it didn't actively piss me off, but it's not great. I found Monitor to be useful. When that music started I actually got excited and thought maybe I judged this album too early. But then she started singing and I became much less enthusiastic. I don't know if it's style or lyrics or her voice in particular but the vocals take me out of it a bit. Which is a bad sign for a band that has the singer's name in the band name
I knew of Siouxsie & the Banshees but I didn’t really know Siouxsie & the Banshees. I like it, but I expected to like it more than I do. I think the might be one of those albums that had I heard it when it was first released it would command more attention. Unfortunately, I have already heard all the bands/sounds that they inspired so it loses a little of its shine. Still a solid album start to finish.
Wow, really pleasantly surprised by this one. I'm usually pretty skeptical of "post punk" music. This was way better than I was expecting. I'd be more inclined to check out the rest of the catalogue because of it. Solid 3 star album and one I'd actually go back to give a more in-depth listen to.
I like this one, pretty decent jangly guitars.....
I was excited to listen to the first Siouxsie and the Banshees album in this challenge, almost 12 months ago. This is a great album and probably deserves a higher rating, however I’m annoyed with the challenge when it includes the same artist multiple times, especially when the albums sound very similar to each other.
This was pretty good, but I preferred the previous Siouxsie and The Banshees album we had - this one feels a bit more 'samey' through out and tbh I wasn't in the mood for this genre when listening to it. I wish I'd given the other one 4, so I could give this one 3 - but I guess I'll just have to give them both 3! Not sure having this album in the challenge adds much, I wish there was more diversity in bands rather than multiple albums from the same artists
Spooky
Juju, “an object that has been deliberately infused with magical power or the magical power itself”. I’d say that magic was strewn across this album a little unevenly with Spellbound, Halloween and Monitor easily the biggest highlights and a couple too many deadweight songs mainly in the back half. For the most part even with the songs not always being that catchy this is a decently atmospheric, unnerving listen with lots of nice, wiry Brillo pad of guitar, rumbly thunderous percussion and plenty of gothy, waily, tribally goodness. 3.5 stars.
I’ve heard OF this band. No idea what they sound like. A GIRL???? If I could somehow convey a spit take via writing (and not using the lame roleplay stars *nods* *shoots self*) I would. It’s been nothing but moody boys for about two weeks now. This song is very 80’s and very high energy. I like that, I like the title, but what I can’t really get behind is the rest of it. Kinda mid. This is a cool intro, although please go nowhere closer to reggae type music. I beg of you. Ok they heeded my cries. Eh. Where were they going? Into somewhere? Maybe repeat it 64 more times, Siouxsie. This sucked. Arabian Knights??? With a K?? I don’t know if it was Banshee or big Sioux herself, but this is the type of writing I come for when I listen to the 1001 most influential albums of all time. Seriously, coolest one so far for the first minute and a half. Devolves from there for a few seconds but we go back. Good song. Whoa HALLOWEEN was yesterday. This is truly the greatest mashup of things ever. Let’s think about Halloween as a concept. I’ve heard it was some harvest festival but I need to research the costume thing. How did some pagan harvest lead to me dressing like grimace and hassling the local elderly for an upgrade on my mealy apple or mini toothbrush. Man. I guess I’m kind of bored with this song. Oh hell yeah. This guitar rules. That’ll wake anybody up. Almost early 2000s nu-metal, except not hyper cringe. Shouty and pretty cool. Good return to form. Or beginning of form? Whatever. This is boring. It feels like a night shift. Vaguely depressing, interminable, and overall contributing to an early death. Whoa glass breaking. Makes me want to see stone cold come out. Unfortunately I just had to listen to this chilly 80’s mantra reading. Man this one starts off cool. It devolves into such repetition that I just don’t get it. Why is it that music nerds love things to repeat so much? Spooky. Weird. Interesting. Man my last song review could be the review for this whole album. It was repetitive and annoying in places but between the dissonance, the flirtations with metal, and the overall bizarre feel, I didn’t hate this thing. Solidly intriguing and worth hearing. 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Arabian Knights, Monitor
Okay.
Correcto
5/10 Started well but not for me overall. A bit repetitive in my opinion Favourite Song=Into The Light Least Favourite Song=Night Shift
Love the instrumental, dislike the vocals. I feel that that is the case of a lot of post punk and new wave bands for me. But I get the appeal of this. I think maybe my dad overplayed this kinda music to me as a kid and now I have a kinda negative reaction. 6 / 10 Good tracks: Spellbound, Monitor, Night shift
Album art is sick and fits the music which is pretty cool. Didnt know what to expect here but I could stomach it and found it interesting. and able to vibe with at times as well.
Es un buen post-punk, oscuro, con atmósfera atrapante. Ruidoso por partes.
I wanted to like this band more than I ended up doing so. In the first few tracks of the album, I got vibes of The Cranberries and Kate Bush, whom I love. However, later on in the record it got more into Bikini Kill and Hole territory. While I respect those artists and they have their merits, that style is not altogether for me. Could be worth looking into this artist (or the other aforementioned artists for that matter), so all in all not a bad listen. Notable Tracks: - Spellbound - Into The Light 6/10
Great album and great sound. Only song that really stood out for me was Spellbound. Other greats but no notables. I think there may be some better Souxsie albums to listen to.
Ikke værst - den fortjener en lytning eller to mere.
Good stuff. I'll listen again sometime. It might grow on me
Reminded me a bit of the Cranberries. I enjoyed it, but probably not a style that I will listen to much in the future.
experimentell ja, aber immer so dass man noch zuhören kann. für mich klar mittelfeld.
Obwohl ich diese Art von Musik gerne mag, konnte ich mich noch nie für Siouxsie erwärmen.
Sounds old yet new. Tired but fresh. Golden but trashy. Planned but chaotic. Vintage but modern.
Exceptional start and maintains a degree of classic banshees throughout
Best Song: Spellbound. I liked the pounding percussion as a counterpoint to high and lilting vocals. Worst Song: Head Cut. The "spooky" effects and howling vocals felt more like a gimmick than an earnest effort. Overall: Better than I expected. Some tracks gave me a vibe similar to The Doors. The vocals are by far the reason to listen.
Halloween and Monitor are both pretty good, but I still don't care for her voice. "Anxious" is a good word to describe the backing music. It's fine, but another artist who isn't for me.
I have been a high level fan of SATB since the mid-80's thanks to a handful of radio friendly songs they released. This is a popular record based on the number of plays, but I only knew "Spellbound" & "Arabian Knights" from their greatest hits album. "Arabian Knights", "Into The Light" & "Monitor" have that great early 80's vibe and catchy hook - they were probably killer live, so much energy and angst. I am glad I had a chance to listen to it and I enjoyed it but I don't think it's Top 1001 worthy.
Bit of a waste of time this one. There were times it threatened to be interresting but unfortunately it never got there. So it going to get the dreaded 3 stars for music I don't give a figg about.
This was pretty good for the most part.
Loved the banshees more than the Siouxie. Even though she has a very Unique and interesting voice, I kinda just wanted to listen to the instrumentals.
I like some of Juju, can hear some of the influences on loads of the female-fronted bands I listen to now, just not enough of the songs are good enough to really enjoy it. Halloween and Monitor are ace though, gets me to a 3, Monitor is clearly a song Dead Sara were influenced by (I mean their guitarist is Siouxie Medley :D as if it wasn't obvious enough from that).
This was good - plenty of energy, Spellbound is excellent, and really the whole first half of the album is pretty decent. Trails away a bit towards the end, but a good vibe to it, 3/5.
Solid novel soudcscape , some good listen , not any lows very solid
a bit lame, spellbound is good but the album seems to peter away after that, dissappointed
This was better than I anticipated. I spent years listening to punk rock and never bothered to explore any Siouxsie. At this point, it’s probably too late for me to get into anything new from this genre, but I do expect it. This was a much more creative effort than other post-punk albums I’ve heard. She’s also go a very powerful voice, I was pretty shocked. Not bad.
Quite fun to bop my head along to, I like the high energy of it, but it gets a bit samey
3/5
It was more interesting than I was expecting, but it didn't do much to me. It was pretty good though. I enjoyed it.
3 spooky goth rock
I liked it, but I felt that a number of the songs were kinda same-y. And “Voodoo Dolly” just went on WAY too long. Siouxsie I liked as a singer, but the guitars were it as audible as I hoped. They needed to pop out a little more for me. Top tracks: “Spellbound,” “Night Shift”
Its cool but not really my thing
Good work music, new wave/dance-y
Cool vibe
Attempted to listen to this a week ago, was busy, had trouble listening & a few tracks in, kinda hated it. Super behind on my list, decided to start over & knock out this album &... I kinda dig it. Into the Light, Arabian Knights, & Monitor are jams.
Indie light rock…eh, ok
Post punk classic, not for me tho.
Better than expected but still just average at best
This is one of those records that succeeds mightily at what it set out to do.
Gogo and B-52 vibe.
Impressive, but a little too discordant for my tastes.
Album 492 of 1001 Siouxsie And The Banshees - Juju Rating : 2.75 / 5 Wanted to like this more as other I've heard from them but this just didn't hit for me.
Aesthetically strong, but I was not able to vibe too much with it.
A good solid album was never a massive fan but still enjoyable
I knew Spellbound well and there are some good tracks on here. Given it a 3 initially but could see it being upgraded to a 4 with more listens
Hadn't heard it before. Not too bad, but probably better for a younger stage of life.
solid - much more straightforward and enjoyable than the past few albums the bass has that 80s octave-y sound.
Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.
I wish I liked this one more! The first half was cool and funky, but they lost in me in the second half.
this is one of those albums that I can appreciate what it's doing and where it fits into music history and culture as a whole, but it's ultimately just not for me. the dark and brooding gothic rock/proto-punk vibe is interesting for a song or two, but quickly just falls back to sameness. the front half of this album was definitely more interesting than the back half, but it wasn't enough to keep my interest. favorites: spellbound, into the light
It was interesting. I think i'll be able to appreciate it more as time goes on.
This is another of those bands who I was aware of, had heard the hits on the radio but never really dived into an album. Turns out it's fairly consistent, radio friendly punk pop. I enjoyed it, like the attitude and the hooks were good. Nothing I'll be heading back to but a worthwhile listen.
Lovely dark post punk
enjoyed it more than i thought i would - had me tapping my toes a couple times
Komisch, nach jedem Titel denke ich, gleich macht John Peel eine Ansage.
Very Mucha post-punk touchstone. Punishing guitar and sharp, staccato vocals. I needed more that was human to be able to balance that out in the lyrics.
I think I just had mixed emotions about this album overall. I think it was diverse and something new, but honestly it just didn’t stick with me. I was intrigued to listen to it but I just barely remember it. I do recognize the influence though!
The start and middle of the album was good. But it was lost to me by the end!
A good album, firmly betwixt the 70s and 80s. It is enjoyable with some good songs but not something that will be in my regular rotation.
consummate pros at work here.
Interesting listen. Best track is Spellbound 3/5
Interesting.
Probably the best Siouxsie album I've heard.
Yeah this was quite good.
I like how this was a bit more avant garde than their peers in the punk world, and it's refreshing to hear a female voice fronting this kind of sound.
Nope.
good, but a bit weird for me. too much vocal pretentiousness, not enough guitars!
This is an interesting listen. Not something I would normally listen to, but the more I listen the more I like it, so 3 stars or C+.
meh
Shocker: this record is kind of a bummer. Pretty interesting given the context of its release but wow what a bummer.
Rating: 7/10 Very good album overall. The band's ability to combine gothic and jangly elements is really commendable, the album has a dark tone/atmosphere while having catchy instrumentation. This album is wildly creative and risk-taking which I respect but I don't find a decent bit of it to be that enjoyable. Favorite songs: Spellbound, Into the Light, Halloween, Monitor, Sin In My Heart. Worst song: Voodoo Dolly.
Very good for its time, (enjoyed listening to it) score 7
A fun listen! Some good tunes, nice flow to the album. Solid.
I've always enjoyed Siouxsie. New to me, but enjoyable
I liked it okay.
Pretty mid overall
Voodoo Dolly is going on my Spook-y Hoes playlist.
spooky type beats
Post-punk, dark wave. Ni fu ni fa.
Bien. Oscuro, con cantante femenina. Pero no me llega a encantar.
I listened to it, and enjoyed it, but forgot to write my review. Finally getting to reviewing it a week later, and I remember it generally, but couldn’t tell you a single thing about it. I’ll maybe come back to it, but it didn’t land as memorable on first listen.
Solid 3
3.5 I didnt care for Siouxsie but thought the banshees were really good. Apparently, this list has hard-on for the group. We will see what the other entries bring
My first time listening to these guys. I like the spooky stuff.
3/5. I liked what I heard, but the whole album wasn't on Spotify.
Steady
Meh
Some classics in here like Spellbound and an album that launched a number of careers. Fabulous guitar work by John McGeoch (Magazine).
Punk rock vibes, didn't have the patience to listen to everything. Not my cup of tea but was vibing to a lot.
Pretty good but still off-putting at times
Artsy and experimental laying down the blueprint for Ne Wave. Scattered at times with little structure to support the sound but still bold
3.5
68/100
Good album, never listen to it before but am a fan now.
Overall I enjoyed the vibes of this album even though I don't usually listen to this genre. Nothing really stood out to me but they were all enjoyable except voodoo doll which is mega bad. 3/5
This album would've been an easy 4 without Voodoo Dolly. unfortunately the last song has a large impact on my rating because obviously i hear it last and it just made me think "what the fuck is going on" the whole time. most of the songs were good, i quite enjoyed them at the start. i found the use of bass drum unique and refreshing up until i heard Voodoo Dolly. and then i got tired of it very quickly. overall 3/5, would've been much more enjoyable for me without voodoo dolly but still a pretty good album
I imagine if I were goth I'd be INCREDIBLY into this. But since I'm only someone who appreciates the style and am not so much a participant, it's some pretty fine juju.
Certainly an important milestone in 80s post punk, but it's mostly just decent all around.
With a punk sensibility she made really interesting rock and roll. Solid.
One of my favorite things about this project so far is realizing the year some of these albums came out. For some reason I have trouble picturing this as early-80's and it must have sounded groundbreaking, for sure. Liked it overall
Would give another listen
I feel like a lot of these songs are missing something, like I kinda wish that the beats hit a little harder, though I can appreciate it without it, some of the songs feel strangely empty or dissatisfying. I like a decent bit of goth, but I don't think this scratches that itch for me. Voodoo Dolly was a stinker, But I really vibed with Spellbound and Arabian Knights in particular
Not my style. Not amazing lyrics and no gravitas
Pretty good
Decent album, but nothing too remarkable
This is my first time listening to a Siouxsie Sioux album and I'm surprised it has taken me this long to do so. She's been an influence on so many artists I love. Saying that.. I found this album just fine. Maybe it'll take a few re-listens to fully appreciate but it just didn't do it for me on the first listen.
I enjoyed this a lot but I also already forgot most of the music. 6/10
Decent sound, her voice is nice. Thankfully not as melancholy as some of their work, though couple of songs could have ended about three minutes sooner.
Well I had a really low bar for this album since it said it was British post punk and Public Image Ltd. did not give a favorable impression of that, but this passed it. A solid 3 although on another day I might have given it a 4 but I had just finished studying o chem while listening to this so that may contribute to it getting a three. Regardless, it was an interesting listen, the vocals were great the instruments were played quite well and the overall sound was very different which was kind of nice. I don't love the 7 minute song at the end, that just kind of drug on.
overall I enjoyed this album-driving drums, guitar, & her voice is strong. they kept the sound moody, but it didn't get too over the top. couple of the longer numbers could have used some editing, but overall a solid 3.5
I enjoyed, but probably wouldn't listen again.
I had never heard of this artist before. I liked a few of the songs.
These guys are too much, the drummer is crazy good! 3 stars
Okay album. Didn’t find it to be one I was drawn to overly much. Like their sound okay.
3.2
This was an interesting album. Overall it was unique and interesting but also had very solid singing and the instrumentals were not too ridiculous. I can see how people like this. There were a couple songs that I enjoyed but overall couldn’t find myself listening to it over and over again. Better than expected though. 6.1/10
Easier to listen to, and musically better than others in this genre
I wouldn't listen to this kind of thing regularly but I didn't dislike it.
Not perfect but I did enjoy it!
really liked
I'd say this is a nice middle of the road album. No particular wow factor, but pleasant enough to spend an hour with
Siouxsie and the Banshees - Juju I was familiar with Siouxsie but mainly because of her name. I never really listened to her at the time nor later in life. Juju is a good album. The one thing that I gather from reading up on it is that the guitarist, John McGeoch used an unconventional style of guitar playing for this album. It was enjoyable and if you enjoy 80s music, you should give this one a listen. 3/5
I wanted to like this more, but it was all pretty uninteresting. I enjoyed it at first, but by the end, I was over it. I don’t like the vocals, especially the yelps and growls. The rest of the music just didn’t seem to have the energy to fit that. Either did the rest of the singer’s performance. This got real close to getting a two.
Really enjoyed the vibe and the singers voice. The beginning of the album was really strong with "Spellbound" and "Into the Light" being really good. If fizzled out towards the latter half but I still thought it was a cool album (and band) I hadn't heard before.
Siniestra nueva ola pasada de moda. Buena primera canción
A spooky post-punk record, with an immaculate sprinkle of goth. So good!
Fun album. Very much of the decade.
I was looking forward to this one. Had a best of compilation for years and like nearly every track, and obviously despite a shambolic start they became very influential very quickly and developed a fair bit over their career. Already knew and liked Arabian Nights and Spellbound from this... not much on here really improved on those. Siouxsie is at least trying to break out of her signature monotone vocal sound here, but it all does sound a bit samey. There are no hidden treasures on this album sadly. Passable.
Only listened to a bit of this. Just didnt have time this day. I thought it was not bad but was not an instant fan. Will try it again at a later date.
Epic and upsetting for opening the eighties. You can hear how it has influenced many artists.
Definitely listenable. I tend to think of them as some of the original goth music, and it still fits, in my opinion.
Never listened to this band before. It's interesting? Some great guitar riffs in this and Siousxie has a great voice. Some of the songs aren't my favorite, but overall I do like this album. Certainly a transition from punk into a more 1980s sound.
Enjoyable but the spell wore off a bit for me towards the end
Didn't like it much
És una llàstima perquè l'àlbum comença súper bé i les primeres cançons m'han agradat molt, però decau de seguida i se m'ha fet molt molt pesat cap al final. Expected Lorenzo Rating: 3
I have fond memories of this band. Got to know it through my sister when I was a teenager. It was fun reliving all the weird feelings their music made me feel. I'd give it a 4 because of nostalgia, but honestly, this hasn't aged as well as some other bands my sister introduced me too (eg. The Cure, The Pixies). It feels like an unending bizarre soundscape.
This is another example of how I was missing from the music scene during the '90s because I've never listened to any of this bands albums in their entirety before this one here today. I'm familiar with their pop hits and have probably seen a video on MTV but it's actually close to a sound that I like. Probably closer than some of the other more recent reviews like GARBAGE. I like the early efforts of developing this goth rock sound that they were involved in so I'm happy I got to hear this but will I add it to a regular playlist? Possibly!
I only knew Spellbound before listening to this album, and the rest is pretty much what I expected. Some strong tracks but nothing hits the heady heights of the first track, unfortunately
Solid one
ALright album First song banger
Really cool to hear some female fronted punk. Haven't heard them before but it was neat learning about how foundational they were to post-punk. Not something I'd probably put on myself, but I enjoyed it although it definitely sounds like the 80s.
I wanted to like this. I just aint about female singers for the most part. She is talented for sure, but I just don't vibe with the higher register
Ok, but didn't blow me away.
Liked Night Shift but wasn't that into the vibe altogether of the album
3.5/5 very solid
The first album I listed to of true post-punk music. It’s not really for me but I understand why it’s considered good. They remind me of The Cranberries, with the guitar and vocal style.
I appreciate the history, but the old punk scene doesn't really do it for me. It's like, too much of a slow plod.
I love Siouxsie and the general sound of this record but was surprised at how little most of the songs held my attention. Think I'm more of a Creatures kind of person.
