Reviews (page 7 of 11)
This is a decent record. The production is much different than The Scream. The reverb on the vocals is way overdone. Generally speaking, I like the music and the alternative guitar work... it reminds me of both early post-punk alterno and early grunge.
Don’t really like new wave in large doses or the singer’s vocal style. Spellbound is a good track.
A classic display of early 80s goth, punk. She’s the queen.
Heaps going for it, just can't completely get into it. Fav tracks: Spellbound RYM: Y (#306) Saved a song: N
I like vaguely gothic electro pop. Makes for a good radio after it finishes too.
It was OK, they have better music
- Spellbound: Off to a good start. I quite like this. Is this gothic? 1981 might predate the gothic subculture. This might be part of the grassroots, or an early entry into it. I'll need to get the timeline right first. In any case, A+ start. Looking at what the band members look like, I'm pretty sure this is gothic so it should be interesting to look into. - Into The Light: Alright, now this I'm really into. - Arabian Knights: Catchy. I'm noticing the vocals feel kind of low volume. The whole album feels audially washed out, I think. I dunno. Maybe it's just the age of the album but this is really contributing to the vibe. - Sin In My Heart grasped my attention again. I quite like the drums in this one. Yes, this is very nice. - Head Cut: this one demands attention. Can't listen to this in the background. Cool guitars. Drums continue to hit. Definitely doing something interesting, but the vocals and lyrics aren't really doing it for me. - Voodoo Dolly: Oh yeah. I like this. - The Spellbound 12" mix is hitting as well. Might be the best on the album. It might be the exact same as the first song in the album. Maybe it just hit harder the second time, idk. I'll figure that out later. Alright, the album is good, of hat there's no doubt. But gothic rock has never really gotten my gears turning. It does light up my vampire cortex so that's nice. The vibe is definitely there, but the enjoyment is intermittent. Sin In My Heart was a highlight.
Always felt interchangeable with Florence and the machine. Kind of expected musically , sometimes tribal and a couple of times felt very reminded of the doors. Nothing wowed me here.
loved the sound of this but the album itself lost a bit of steam midway through. defo an indicator that i could be a big siouxsie and the banshees enjoyer so a band for me to invest more time into for sure
Just reminded me of a rock band I don’t know nothing special not bad not fantastic
If you are going to have a very distinctive sound, you really want to distinguish the songs by having interesting lyrics sung clearly. That is not the case with this album and the error is compounded by having the vocals sung in a slightly shrieky and annoying fashion
*1981. *This sounds like Jefferson Airplane but with early 80s synth pop. *I didn’t know Siouxsie is just a play on the lead singer’s name - Susie. *Did not particular enjoy this, but it wasn’t awful either. RATING - 6/10
A banda transpira anos 80 e com certeza a música Sin In My Heart me ganhou
Pretty great, a little repetitive but overall still a banger
I think post punk you either start early or never. Not really my jam. But the album was listenable. It was not enough experimental for my taste, just regular music played with an indy sound and vocals. It was fine to listen to but I'm not gonna cue this again.
Enjoyed this so much more than the first Siouxsie and the Banshees album!
listen ............................... i know siouxsie and the banshees are the foundation for much of alt rock and goth music as we know it, but perhaps that comes as a detriment for giving them a listen now. some good tracks ! but maybe not my thing
Into the Light - funky riff throughout. Seems like a good album to listen to while driving around delivering packages.
I appreciate how many musicians this band has influenced and I wanted to like this, but it fell flat for me. The vocals and melodies were too droning and repetitive. I loved the riff and the driving guitars on “Monitor.”
Pretty good, some really nice songs on here like Spellbound but lost me a little bit at times too. I will say I think the guitar work on this is really nice.
While it wasn’t really my style, I found this one to be pretty cool. Very moody vocals and instrumentals. I don’t think I’d listen to it regularly but I didn’t regret giving it a spin.
Clearly influential and deserving of this list. I’m at like a 3.5 leaning more to 3.
Listened previously. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Very Good - I like the set up of the band on this album. Some really good tracks, Arabian Knights and Night Shift are great. I really like Sin In My Heart as well. Overall a really good album.
The Good: When you got JuJu, you got Juju! The Bad: Of course, when you got an itch… you scratch… The Ugly: Finding out that Juju, indeed, will make you scratch… I was never into the emo that much back in the ‘80s, or, as we called it, new wave—lump sum name for any band where most of the clothes worn were black, or grey, and maybe some white or red to break things up… Since the ‘80s I’ve started to appreciate the big guns of the New Wave so much more than I did back then. The Cure, Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode et al… Siouxsie… she always scared me, and still does. I guess that is what Juju is all about… fear! For me, this album is too much of that feared New Wave from when I was a teenager. Not the kind of music that I’d gladly sit down for and enjoy a 40 minute contemplation about times gone a by… missing the - - there. Sorry Siouxsie, can’t give you the 4* you deserve as I’ve listened to this album 4 times, and I don’t think my opinion will change on the fifth listen. 3*
80's British post-punk band that I've never heard of? I was braced for the worst but this was actually not bad.
Some great tracks on here! Really enjoyed the higher energy moments. Sounds a bit dated in places but Siouxsies energy is obviously legendary.
𝘑𝘶𝘫𝘶 is a sharp, atmospheric blend of post-punk tension and early gothic drama. The guitars slash and shimmer, the rhythm section drives everything forward with icy precision, and Siouxsie Sioux delivers her vocals with that unmistakable mix of control and menace. It’s a strong record, but not one that fully grabs me; the mood is consistent, almost to a fault. Still, as a bridge between post-punk and what would soon be called goth rock, it’s an important and intriguing listen.
I like the lead singer rest is alright
Juju was the banshees nickname for Len Houmous. 3.4 5/9 Monitor
This came out during the summer between my junior and senior year in HS, a pretty pivotal summer for me. A group of about a dozen students travelled through the Canadian Rockies and into Glacier, Yellowstone, and the Badlands over a 3 week time span. We were in 2 vans. Ours had an 8 track tape player. We did not have Juju playing, we were listening to Blizzard of Oz on repeat. That fall, I saw Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, and Genesis live. These folks were just not on my radar. Some other post-punk acts were, but, as I've said in other reviews, I was just never that into goth, emo, dark, sad music that much. I can appreciate this, but I understand why I wasn't listening to it then and I don't think I'd come back to it now.
knew i was gonna like it from the first note
biased, imperfect reviewer that i am, i think my impression of this record as whole is being colored by the presence of Arabian Knights, which is a monstrous song. that's not to say that religious fundamentalist communities can't be incredibly misogynistic, but jesus. we've seen, over and over again, since October of 2023 and many times before, where this dehumanization of Arab men gets us. it's a hell much worse than any foretold on this album the thing though is that this is a quite cool record, punchy and theatrical - i especially like Into the Light, which has a nice bit of Cocteau Twins to it, and Night Shift. i recently played in a band with a friend who loves Siouxsie, and now that i listen to her, it's cool to hear how much of this is in our music i know the actual review is slight, which might seem a bit bad-faith, but a lot of these post-punk/goth records will probably be similar like-not-love things for me. it's a sound i never have trouble with, but it's never a favorite either
Good
Less punk, more darkness weighing down the music. Turn off the lights and embrace the abyss for this one.
Not my style, can appreciate the soundscape but not much the melodies. Though it stands on the works of the doors it falls short in terms of songwriting. Some tracks are ok, punchy, but overall not my cup of tea
It’s ok a little too grungy for me
I thought it was alright. Don't NEED to listen again.
Pretty good.
Interesting. Not my style but rather enjoyed it. Crazy vocals
I liked it. Was good company for a dreary morning. Maybe not something I'd spin up again and again but there were a few nice tracks.
Didn’t hate it. Not gonna gush over it.
This was fine, but it's hard to differentiate it from a lot of other post-punk. 3.0/5.0: Good
Never been a massive Siouxsie fan, didnt mind this album but it doesnt stand out that much to me either. Spellbound is a fun song though
Not a bad album. Very different to what I was expecting, but it started strong and got weaker for me personally.
Starting song is ok I think they have better songs tho ending of spellbound I like. Really like the 2nd track. 3rd starting beat kinda sounds like falling 4 ya lol, Oms i reco track 4 i hate this song track 5 is good I like it I dont really feel much for this one Id say like 3/5? its good but not great or anything 2/17/2026
I like this record but I don't know the precise reason why.
Seeing the music I like it seems like I should be very into Siousxie and the Banshees but I somehow never got into them so let’s give them another chance. The vibes here are great, but this really reminds me of the Jesus and Mary Chain. It has great aesthetics and some good musical ideas I just wish somebody takes this stuff and makes actual good songs out of it (like The Cure did, for instance). It’s just pretty monotonous and goes nowhere. So let’s give them three stars because unlike Psychocandy I can’t seem to find a single song that fully works for me here but still yeah you should listen to Siouxsie and the Banshees before you die.
Night Shift was nice. Some were less to my taste because of the repetition, but the mood was nice because of guitars. I don't like the mix. Voodoo dolly was cool.
Really good album. Not sure about the last song, but maybe it will grow on me. I'm surprised I never came across this group before.
Single good gimmick, repetitive.
I enjoyed this but didnt listen to the whole thing
Some Old faves here for sure. Fun but I doubt a revisit.
One of the post punk greats. Sounds a bit dated now, and not their best, but always worth listening to.
eh
3,5
Previously unknown. I liked it as a whole - except for the last song.
This was a nice surprise and seemed really ahead of it's time.
Much better than their debut album. Not as punk-ish. A more polished and less angry sound.
This album felt like a female lead, gothy version of Talking Heads "Remain In Light". It's kinda atmospheric with an art-school vibe. The album your older sister would have listened to and said, "you don't get it". Lots of tight grooves. You can dance to it, but it's not comfortable. I got into "Night Shift" and "Halloween". Not bad all the way through. My Rating: 3/5 wooden masks.
2/9/26. First time diving into this band, definitely hear this sounds in later bands I've come across. Cool mix of early post punk and dark, and better vocals!
fav songs: spellbound into the light sin in my heart head cut groovy, fun guitar work, hooks galore 60/100
Can see why they were so influential.
Not bad, good driving guitar throughout and a great voice
Some good stuff, some a little slow, some a little reminiscent of the smiths. Not a Siouxsie fan, but this isn't bad
3 stars I’ve only listened to a siouxsie and the banshees greatest hits collection, so this is my first full length. I enjoyed it and feel like it could grow higher for me with more listens. “Spellbound” is a clear highlight and great opener. I’ll give it more chances over time to increase, but it didn’t stand out immediately as something requiring more listening.
Not my vibe
I think they d9 some brilliant work, i just wish they mix up the sound a little
Most songs sound pretty similar. I like the lead vocalist. There are some good melodies. I recognized two songs.
I thought the album started out just fine, but I knew I was in trouble when I started looking to see just how many more songs, I had to listen to for the album to be complete, and that was before the very long song: "Voodoo Dolly". Still on the whole the album was okay.
I think this is fine and aptly named but nothing is memorable enough for me to rate this higher than a low/mid 3
decent
Solid
5/10
An iconic example of the gothy post-punk genre. Very well written, performed, and produced. It's just not something I'm particularly into, unless maybe I'm playing a game of Vampire: The Masquerade.
Not my genre, not my favourite Still decent for what it is, so I give it a 3, I was able to finish
A few standout tracks. Siouxsie Sioux is a FORCE! Her power carries this album. Gets a little samey but being that it's not super long makes it easier to get through it. 3.5/5
Something new for me, realy cool album
I don't find myself drawn to this genre (post-punk? goth punk?) very often, and it starts to grate on me by the end but I thought the vocals were intriguing and the music kept me interested.
Pandering 80s pop shizzle, but ok
Liked it. Pretty great guitars and vocals reminded me of some German rock from a decade later actually.
I liked it at first, she has a cool voice but it was getting annoying toward the end
It’s aight, don’t mind it there are nice instruments and riffs but the vocals do feel like they’re missing something so it’s a 3.
Started off strong with the first two songs, then dipped, then the last Voodoo Dolly got my attention again..overall, it was good.
M’oui
siouxsie has a good voice but this kind of music isn't for me I like more Loud stuff
I hoped it would be better. Just okay.
Why is there so much Siouxsie Sioux on this list?
Although nothing stood out, she's got a great voice.
Into the light
Nie siadło
Mejor que el anterior, más post-punk
Thought this was pretty good, def art-house 80s. Feels original to them and a band in their creative peak. Don't think I'll revisit it but I'm glad it was on this list
Nothing of note to write about it but I didn’t hate it.
Must be honest didn't enjoy this. No real standout tracks for me. Only memorable track was Arabian Knights.
8/10 cool album with some good songs
I liked “Spellbound”, “Into the Light”, and the rest got kind of experimental and I lit started to grate on me. (Lookin’ at you “Voodoo Dolly”)
A very cool unapologetic album. First one from the list I had not heard at all before. 8/10 [KEEP]
a pleasant surprise
I always want to like them more than I actually do.
75/100
-S Tier- Spellbound -A Tier- -B Tier- Into the Light Arabian Knights Monitor -C Tier- Halloween Night Shift Sin in My Heart -D Tier- Voodoo Doll AVG SCORE: 2.625 With the exception of Spellbound, a lot of the other songs on this album are hard to distinguish, fairly simple, and not very memorable. Into the Light, Arabian Nights, and Monitor, sort of, stand out a bit, but not so much that I would regularly seek them out.
Not as dark and goth as I expected but pretty cool
Good but not my thing. Lots of tension.
This album started very strong for me and fell off towards the end. Maybe I need to listen to this on Halloween or a full moon.
Not my favorite Siouxsie album, but still brought back memories of m younger years when music was original.
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Art rock. Probably will not revisit this but the vocals and guitar work are definitely worth a listen. Much higher energy than I expected.
Her voice sounds like the effervescent feel of champagne coming out of a bottle. It fizzes and pops with excitement and energy. It crackles from the pressure of the bottle and desperately wants to escape its boundaries.
The album where they grow up but don't leave any of the intensity behind - or probably even builds a bit on past outings (Monitor - are you kidding me) Songs are more confident. SSs voice rings out of the speakers. Creative arrangements. It's a new day. Badass.
Siouxsie and The Banshees exist on the darker side of New Wave and has always been an enjoyable listen. But I’ve always found that over the course of an hour (or an album) that each song can start to feel the same.
I'm glad to have listened to it, as this was a band I'd heard a lot about but never approached before in any real way. However I'm not really digging it that much. There's some good propulsive beats in there, but the overall style isn't really my thing. It's fine, but it's not stirring much in me.
Not really my taste, but definitely brings the sounds of the early 80's right back to me.
I liked this but perhaps listening first thing this morning on a car journey wasn’t the best time. It’s one I would like to revisit as it had lots of elements to enjoy, some bits reminded me of PJ Harvey and other QOTSA which piqued my interest.
Spell bound is all ready my vibe. 12” versions good. 3/5
Mielenkiintoinen levy. Pitää palata joskus tähän. 3,25/5.
forgot to finish but was okay, not my type of music but still good reminded me of florence and the machine
really enjoyed this album, was giving me witchy vibes
Siouxsie and the other Banshees always came off as original and this album wailed it so…good one.
Very unique, sort of reminds me of the Cocteau Twins
(2.9) I really like the voice of the lead singer, but I didn’t really love the overall sound. The first song is good tho
*Fine rock album that gets a little too out there by the end
Spiky, enjoyable. Liked this more than I expected.
Maybe it was because I was having a strange day, but this sound didn't quite do it for me. It's interesting enough, and I definitely want to give it a re-listen when I'm not stressed out with Holiday affairs.
Not my usual taste, but I liked it!
I enjoyed the music. There’s some good stuff here, if a bit uneven. Siouxsie and the Banshees doesn’t hold much interest to me, though, because they were part of the UK punk scene that sought fit to embrace Nazi imagery to be “provocative”. They wore Nazi armbands, and wrote the lyric “too many Jews for my liking”. The excuses ranged from saying it’s meant to be “high camp, not death camp” to claiming they weren’t aware of how bad Nazis were, to “the Nazi outfits just looked so cool”, to “we never meant it to be supporting fascism”. Im not making any of that up. Meanwhile this type of behavior invited neo-Nazism to invade punk music. Thankfully there was a strongly anti fascist cohort in punk - including The Clash - who somehow, someway knew that Nazism was bad (imagine that). I am inspired by punks who take a critical eye to the world and work to break apart systems that don’t work and cause harm. Im not too interested in people who think the point of punk is just to annoy people who are older than them, and think cosplaying as Nazis is the way to do it. Whatever qualities their music may possess, there’s too much good music out there for me to care about their bullshit.
It started off good and then tapered off at the end
British.
not the best thing ever but didnt mind it
I'm fully aware I listened to this full album, but I couldn't tell you one thing about it. It is pretty good, but it didn't stick with me in any way.
6.5/10
Enjoyable, not fantastic.
Like a party at a haunted carnival but you didn't have as much fun as you thought you should. On paper I love this band but in practice this was a pretty average listen. I wasn't as enamored with the vocals as so many people seem to be and while there were some pretty good riffs here and there a lot of it blended together for me. Standouts were "Spellbound" and "Monitor" Pretty decent overall but nothing that blew me away. Id be more than willing to check out some other Banshees albums though to see if anything else tickles my fancy. 3.5/5
A voz me parece familiar. Legalzinha. 3*
Really strong start, but by the end of the album I felt it was a bit répétitive.
Vihasta ja kovaa laulantaa
Jännän mystinen levy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was interesting. New to me but not to those dear in my life. I will have to check out more of their work.
it’s fun, very 80s.
What a start. Love that song and never knew who did it. Really takes a nosedive from there. Guitar work is good and I can hear how this influenced later bands (weirdly got a Stone Roses vibe at one stage). 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
Solid stuff
Kinda dug "Monitor" but the rest just washed over me.
Nichts Spezielles.
Solid album
liked more than i thought i would
Won’t come back to this but didn’t hear any parts that I disliked. Maybe I just am not in the mood today
ik she's a staple goth artist but I couldn't really get into it....the opener was good tho
I love Siouxsie and the Banshees and recently went through the discography. I remember this one being on the radar as their benchmark album, but it was kind of low for me when next to their oeuvre. Still starts very strong and the riffs and guitar work are stellar. I appreciate music that tries to do something different while staying within the boundaries of genre. There's something mystical about the songwriting. That said, the album gets a bit bogged down at the end. This would be a 3.5 for me, but dropping as I think their best work is elsewhere.
Apparently, I don't really get along with Siouxsie And The Banshees. I like the style of the music. But somehow it doesn't grab me. I listened to this album in its entirety as well. Nothing stuck in my memory and I have no desire to listen to the album again. 3/5
I've heard of this band but not quite sure if I have listened to the music. So interested to see what this is like. Cool stuff but not my vibe. I get it.
Good song or two but boring
Favourite track: Spellbound
2,5/5
Listen to their previous album, and this one twice in a row. There's something here, but it hasn't completely clicked. The opener and Monitor are stand out tracks for me. Overall there's plenty of moody 80s goth rock here, but it doesn't grab me like The Cure.
Das Album war damals ganz nett.
On that beat.
It's a grower. I like into the light. Might have to be in form for it, i.e want a heavy beat/feel a bit angry/determined.
Siouxsie is a blindspot for me. I never really listened to them. I love English post-punk,but aside from a couple songs, I can't see me returning to this much.
Was a good album, like the vocals and the instrumentals. Nothing super crazy but definitely a good listen, probably would be a 3.5
While "spellbound" opened things up well, I found "Into The Light" to be the real hook. It's got a fantastic chorus. "Sin In My Heart" was maybe the highlight for me though, it upped the energy a bit at a good time to do so in the tracklisting. Siouxsie is just in a league of her own vocally. Around the 4 minute mark of "Voodoo Dolly" is another faavorite moment of mine as well, what a great way to end the record by speeding things up and making it all very chaotic. Not the best I've heard from them imo, I think I liked Tinderbox more. But still a solid 3/5 front to back
Pretty solid rock album even if it wasn't something I'd consider a particularly great album. Fun to listen to and not a bad moment on it. My biggest negative is that it never got better than being "good", which is where I would rank it. I'll also note that the sound and style hold up well for an early 80s record. Listening to it today, I felt like some of the songs would feel at home on a Last Dinner Party album. Thought that was pretty cool. Overall: 3.5/5
Best song spellbound. Didn't really get into rest of it
I've learned on this generator that I'm not a fan of post punk, and a lot of it has to do with the delivery of the vocals. That's the only party that occasionally irks me about this album, because musically, sonically, it's really solid. There's a lot of talk about the peculiar guitar work, watching out for it with the context of decades between it really shows how prevalent they were in the sounds that influence the future. I'd buy this record, but I'd jump at a version with less vocals. 3.3/5
Not my cup of tea, but I can hear how they’ve influenced artists of today
Again not my genre. Had some popular songs I know, Arabian Knights and Halloween that I enjoyed that’s about it
Interesting. First song is good, didn’t want to like it but catchy. Different sound then what I’m used to. Second song is good too tbh. Again didn’t want to like it but it’s good music. At least one stretch of 3 good songs in a row to me means a good album, first 3 songs for that billing. Not sure abt Halloween. Good music bad lyrics. Childish. Transition into next song is really cool, monitor is good. Night shift was fine, kinda generic. In on sin in my heart. Great background track. Lyrics through the album are just eh. Music picks it up tho. Will never listen to head cut again. Not really good or bad, just fine. I want to like voodoo dolly but it’s over produced. Way too much guitar going on. If every song was like the first 3, it’s a solid 3.5 pushing 4 stars. Underwhelmed with the back half. Songs I will listen to again, 3.18 total score
unique sound
The first half of this album started off super strong for me, but it lost steam in the second half. Really cool guitar tones. Best Track: Into The Light
Oh, it was alright. Some interesting guitar-work with interesting chords. I can see why these folks were kinda groundbreaking at the time.
Right on the edge. 3.5 rounded down.
It's good, but very samey.
I like how punky and loud this is compared to their contemporaries. There's a lot here to like, but I have a lot of trouble with the vocals. The songs are basically indistinguishable song to song, leaning on the same 3 note melodies, vocal tone, and inflection for the delivery of truly every vocal. I think there's stylistic reason for this, and I'm trying to give benefit where I can to it serving the song a la every shoegaze band ever doing the same thing but I love that. It probably comes down to the mixing and how these vocal lines are at the forefront of everything instead of basically just being another instrument in a wall of sound mix. Definitely not devoid of value, I'm teetering between a 3 and a 4.
I liked this album. I enjoyed the dark, goth vibes, and the instrumentation was great. Some of the songs sounded too similar, though. Highlights include Spellbound, Halloween and Monitor. 3.5 out of 5.
Meh, not bad but not sure I would listen again.
Ended up listening to this in portions multiple times and each time it drew me in a little more. Enjoyed much more than the other albums from Siouxsie I've gotten. Kinda of a goth poppy punk vibe. Into the light had Blondie vibes.
There's something striking in this madness... a little overwhelming though
Orange Juice meets Kate Bush?
Best songs: Spellbound, Arabian Nights, Sin in My Heart A pleasant surprise. This album is an interesting piece of goth rock, which shines in its moodier songs. I found the two songs that close the first side a bit grating and not as creative as the others, but overall this album is a worthy listen. 7/10
Another blind spot for me, and I enjoyed it.
A lot of people seem to really like this album, and I wish I was one of them. It's fine, it's not bad, but it doesn't do much for me. I might need to listen again at some point and try and get a better sense of it.
Mediocre at best.
I feel as if I should like goth rock a lot more than I do. Maybe I've just yet to find the right band. Generous 3
This is not my favorite style of music, but it was listenable. I actually liked the first three songs ("Spellbound"; "Into the Light"; and "Arabian Knights") quite a bit, really liked the guitar and drums. To my untrained ears, this album sounded like a mashup of The Doors/Jefferson Airplane/Rush, which shouldn't work, but somehow it does.
Better than I expected, a couple of really excellent songs on this album. Started to sound a little monotonous by the end, but overall still an enjoyable listen.
Enjoyed this more than I expected. Sounds ahead of it's time for 1981.
I actually liked it better than I thought I would. Pretty reflective and pioneering of the genre at that time.
This band is pretty cool, feels like if this album were released today nobody would be able to tell its 50 years old
Was ok
All the songs spund the same but didn't hate it
3,5/5 Some bangers and some that didn't really do much for me. I did really enjoy the singer's voice. Voodoo Dolly reminded me of jefferson's airplane for some reason. Maybe the more I listen to it, the more I might enjoy it and give it an even higher rating but yea this is it. favorites: 'Spellbound', 'Into The Light', 'Sin In My Heart' and 'Voodoo Dolly'
I class this as Triple J music. Okay to listen to, doesn't annoy me, wouldn't buy it. Alternative I guess.
Favorite Song: Into the Light Guitar heavy punk album. Not something I’m usually very interested in but it was a good listen in the gym.
2,9/5
Fav Song: Spellbound
Heavy on the flange pedal, goo stuff. Bit samey but a decent noise
Grungy rhythm guitar that almost doubles as a second vocal. First time hearing this band despite seeing them advertised; enjoyed the liste
Is this punk? Whatever it is, I actually like it! Nothing too spectacular, but good listening all around. 3.5
It’s spooky season
Not the tea I’d order, but I’ll drink it if it’s delivered!
3 -mid
I think I should like this more Will I listen to again 75%
This band has always been a weird one for me - a bit elusive in terms of getting into them. Musically right up my alley but something about the vocal styling has always been hard for me to enjoy. Robert Smith works. Siouxsie Sioux not so much. Sorry. 3/5
The artist name and album name are fire. Wish I liked the vocals more but I found myself wanting the songs to end faster. It's totally fine but just not something I'd go back to. Album cover is quite cool! 5/5
idk, it's fine, kind of a miss for me, but I don't dislike it.
I just finished the album and nothing specific stands. It was pretty middle of the road, though I did like it while listening.
It was good, it didn't blow me away but the vocalist has a great voice and I appreciate how the music could have felt really transgressive at the time. Unfortunately it mostly made me think of better music in the genre. Obviously the band is iconic, maybe this isn't their best work? Cover is interesting but a bit flat for me, a 2/5.
Like the punkiness of it but it devolved quite a bit towards the end which I wasn’t a fan of. Got a bit screamy on the last two songs. Calm down Specific rating- 3.3 Fav song- monitor Least fav - voodoo doll
Not bad, not bad
Lots of cool things going on, I don't think we've had any other album that sounds quite like this, almost like a very early shoegaze. If I have one complaint, it’s that the record can feel a bit aimless at times -- most notably on the 7min closer Voodoo Dolly, which kind of builds up and peters out into nothing. Still, very interesting and distinctive listen. Standouts: Monitor • Night Shift • Sin In My Heart
lowkey giving a mix of PJ Harvey and the last dinner party in a cool way. singles stand out but the album as a whole does not keep my attention.
The guitars are crazy. Amazing stuff. But the music as a whole is not that great.
Odinarily I would say it was too loud and screaming, but must have been In the right mood. It was Ok
cool!
Siouxsie reminds me of Florence and the Machine - something about her voice and delivery is similar. But I think Florence has better songs.
3 sterren.
I think I liked the 1st half of the album more than the 2nd, but I also feel like this one might grow on me more. Especially if I’m in the right mindset/mood
Fun Wiki page on the lead singer. “In early September 1976, the Bromley Contingent followed the Sex Pistols to France, where Siouxsie was beaten up for wearing a cupless bra and a black armband with a swastika on it.” I’m sure it was the bra they took issue with. FTR she’s not a Nazi just wanted to freak people out, which she definitely did. This was great deep dive on a band I knew nothing about. First half of the album felt like a 4, will be some songs I add. Second half fell off. So many familiar sounds to great indie bands. Siouxsie sounds like a more punk Chrissie Hynde (pretenders) maybe.
There’s a lot of downstream influence here. Susans vocal style exists in a lot of punk/alt rock music these days. I immediately think of Dehd. According to the wiki page, the guitar work from McGeoch impressed everyone who was anyone in the 90s from RHCP to the Smashing Pumpkins folks. And honestly, I hear it. Fruciante has a similar style Influence aside, the first 3 tracks are awesome and the rest is just okay. Super glad to have a reference point on them. Worthy listen and future relisten
Goth Go-Gos. Sounds a little like Florence & The Machine or Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The first half of this album is awesome - but a little less memorable down the stretch. Will definitely come back.
pretty good listen. high energy and interesting music throughout. high 3
Decent - interesting sounds and distinctive voice
It was okay. Also, I don't like the fact that her name is actually Susie not suixie
I am decidedly not goth, but I enjoyed this quite a bit. It started strongly, however it did lose some steam as it went on. Can only do so much goth wailing.
Not bad. Fun listen. Good autumnal vibes.
Another triple blind. This album started as the reason I wanted to do this challenge, and it ended with me thinking this was 5 songs too long. Treating this like an anthropological discovery of emo music’s precursor. No regrets, no repeats.
I'd like of the firsts songs. I imagined something really English and Old. Also gave me some memories of my past, what I enjoyed feeling. Other part of the album wasn't very solid, but I liked the atmosphere of the songs
Um Spellbound er that’s it…
Not my genre but I can appreciate the musicianship
Usually don’t care for Siouxsie and the Banshees but this album was cool. I love her voice, the songs are just kinda lame. There’s some depth missing but that may be the point.
I was expecting to like this a lot more than I actually did. It's okay, but it starts to get pretty samey pretty fast and a lot of the songs sound empty or hollow. Maybe I'm just too tired, but I don't have a lot to say past that.
Better than their prior entry but still not something for me to write home about. It's a little more approachable than their debut album and they've grown a bit as a band over the couple years they performed together as expected. I wouldn't begrudge anybody who connects with this album or band overall. For me it's about what I expected which is a middle of the pack album from a band that I'm pretty mild on. 2.67 stars
The music equivalent of Demona from Gargoyles
I really enjoyed this. 3 stars is harsh but 3.5
I feel like this one was much better than the other one we listened to.
3.5 stars
Decent. Voice can get a bit annoying
This is a good album, no question. It's quite monotonous, though. Spellbound is a great track, but it's hard to know for each other song if I've heard it before!
I know these guys were trailblazers in Gothic Rock. I think I liked Bauhaus better. Spellbound is the best song on the album by some distance. I think for me, the album goes 3 or four songs too long - the vibe started to wear on me.
Better than I expected.
Yeah, that was okay. It had about one song I'd listen to again and was mainly uninteresting for me
It was fine. +1 star for the witchy vibe and lyrics.
A pleasant surprise, I know a few hits but had never listened to a full album. Coherent sound, good groove, nice album!
Some good catchy beats in the first 2 songs, "spellbound" and 1 other, just didnt vibe with it as much as some other albums
Pretty good goth/post punk. I wish the whole thing was more like monitor that song is amazing
Punk goddess and gods. They punch, they sore and they come back for more!
Monitor is probably my standout from this album
Not bad but not good, pretty mid but I'm sure it was a hit in the 80's. Best songs are spellbound and Arabian Knights.
I can see the appeal, but the whole thing is not for me. It has its shining moments, like the opener and Head Cut, which are more upbeat than the rest, which is not my cup of tea. Really like the tribal thumping of the drums, though.
Helt okej
I like the driving basslines on this. I like the guitar tone, although on some songs like "Halloween" it's a bit too high pitched. And most of all I love the thudding, tribal drums. Yet put it all together and it sounds a little...thin? That bone dry guitar tone may be one reason. I also kind of wish it was more menacing? "Spellbound" is basically a jangle pop song and "Arabian Knights" feels like a standard post punk song. So is "Sin in my Heart," but it's faster and more urgent. "Into the Light" is a good example of a more interesting song, the angular guitar on that one is incredible. And the closer is a nice way to end - very drawn out and climactic - but it also feels like it's missing something. I think that as dark and gothic as certain elements of this are, it doesn't feel meaty enough to really get that atmosphere across.
I like girl led grungy rock. There a few modern bands that sound like this was their influence. Some of the songs were actually really good, others not so much.
It was an enjoyable listen but this really just feels like a slightly edgier version of the cranberries - another pretty unremarkable grunge band.
kinda fun, seems like some pixies type shi
Very groovy trippy
Not to my particular liking ( liked some of it, sounds and voice, but the assonance of some songs was just not to my taste)
Svänger bra
good
It's fine, but it didn’t leave much of a mark on me. It’s like a snack that’s tasty in the moment but you forget about it right after. I appreciate the effort, but I probably won’t be hitting play on this one again.
I like the sound of this album, incredibly reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane. Unfortunately, I think Jefferson Airplane did it better.
This album surprised me. Listening to the single I thought this was going to be generic pop/punk music through and through, but the next handful of songs were great. A mix of goth rock and post punk rhythms made the album a lot more interesting, and more enjoyable, than the first two songs let on.
Not for me
They had me for the first couple songs but the instrumentals gotta worse as the album went on
LEBRON 🗣️, this album fuels the visions fs so many deer
freaking wierd
I liked some songs, but not so much the others. I get that some album are “atmosphere” albums, but I guess that specific one is just not the right atmosphere for me
Monitor, Spellbound, halloween,
Joy division without the atmosphere or tunes. Still better than most music these days. Monitor and Spellbound were highlights.
Monotonous
Suprisingly, I found album almost listenable. Can't say it was good and can't say it was bad. It was ok
Cool stuff! Into the Light and Head Cut were my favourite tracks. Just generally enjoyed the sound, although not sure I’ll ultimately remember any of it. (3.5 stars)
Never really listened to any Siouxsie Soux other than occasional songs on compilations etc, so cant say they’re an artist that necessarily appeals to me. I quite like the music but there is just something about the vocals or maybe more specifically the style of delivery that just doesn’t quite sit with me
Good album. Out of my normal scope but had good Irish cranberries vibes
I enjoyed this album. Glad to have some female representation on this list when it’s so tilted toward the male rockers. I actually had to listen to some of the songs twice and I enjoyed it more on my second listen.
pop proto-goth, with John McGeoch on splendid form, shimmering and swooshing
I generally don’t care for this style of music, but this was interesting.
And I thought AC/DC was simplistic. I really liked a few tracks but not a huge fan. I bet their live show was great.
7/10
I wasn't a big follower, I was aware of them back when. I listened to one song--too repetitive.
It’s ok, second half not as strong
1st track: Sounds pretty good on first listen 5/5 2nd track: Bit boring, occasionally solid 3/5 3rd track: Forgettable, but alright 3/5 4th track: The style is a bit repetitive at this point, but still not bad 3/5 5th track: The instrumentals and vocals are a bit too dissonant for my liking 2/5 6th track: Solid but again just a bit too repetitive 3/5 7th track: Weak lyrics, great instrumentals 4/5 8th track: Pretty good 4/5 9th track: Forgettable 3/5 Bonus track (Fireworks): Very enjoyable, solid vocals and instrumentals 5/5 Overall I found the album quite repetitive, and the lyrics a bit of a nothingburger, but its nonetheless quite enjoyable. Somewhere around a 3.5/5 as a whole for me.
Siouxsie and the Banshees is always intriguing.
musically i like it, like the voice too. lyrically, not quite for me. 3/5
3.5/5 Really liked Into the Light. A cool goth, new wave band that I'll have to listen more to.
Not the greatest fan of this specific genre, but the album was still very interesting.
