Reviews (page 10 of 12)
Classic Siouxsie. Great if you like the sound, grates a bit if you’re not totally into it.
It only occasionally gets above average. Occasionally
Longtime Siouxsie fan
Starts strong with an excellent Side A but Side B gets lost and it fizzles out. Good band average album.
Screaming like a banshee, my mother fell to her death. She had been drinking tequila shots out of an ashtray for six hours and was performing Shakespeare on the balcony of a Premier Inn. A rhino burst through the door and heckled her performance. It knocked her confidence and she began to cry and eat dog food. The rhino's work was done, so it left. My mother ate dog food for three days, crying her heart out. On the morning of the fourth day, she would reluctantly agree to pose for Playboy. She packed her suitcase and headed for Leeds/Bradford Airport. En route she encountered Kate Winslet, who told her she reminded her of an old fridge magnet she once owned. This put a spring in my mother's step. She climbed to the top of a post office and threw herself 14 feet to the ground, impaling herself on the penis of a ghost.
Nothing to piss your pants about, but fine.
solid album, not groundbreaking to me.
Has its moments but gets bogged down in noise in a way that, say, The Cure never does.
Always a good time.
Post punk British album, kinda ok kinda weird
Meh
Sharp and edgy as you’d expect, with a little more fluidity in the drama and darkness than on earlier records, plus a new inclination to droning. “Spellbound” sets a decent tone and “Arabian Knights” is strong. The vocals are distinct and memorable, though occasionally, it sounds as if she’s singing from down a long tube. The slashing-echoing guitars are intermittently interesting (e.g., “Into the Light”). Still, overall, this is hardly a masterpiece and fails to fully move. One’s now and then reminded of Adam and the Ants (which may or may not be a good thing). If this was the beginning of Goth, one wonders what the fuss is all about. Perhaps one has to be a sensitive and alienated adolescent to fully get it.A flat 3 (i.e., no bullets).
I will say a British lady named Susan Janet Ballion calling herself Siouxsie Sioux feels slightly problematic. It's not a bad album. It is very front loaded in tracks and blends together after a bit. I think most punk albums benefit from being about 30-35 minutes. This just feels a bit long at 41 plus the 12 minutes of bonus tracks. Especially because the last main album song is 7 minutes and is definitely where the album earns its art rock listing. I would say that I do like it overall. Surprisingly the 3 additional remixes were what brought the album back around for me.
This was a nice a goth listen on a cloudy day
Overall a really pleasant record, but with nothing to make it stand out or impress - no low points either, but it's just. Average.
first time of listening to this one, some good tunes here. I think this is one of Siouxsies most lyrical of offerings. John Megeoch's Guitar sound was obviously influential to Johnny Marr as it is reminiscent of early smiths stuff on this earlier album. Love "Spellbound" and "Arabian Knights". a good LP not sure if it would be in my list though.
More Siouxsie! Twosie. Sounds like they've refined their sound since The Scream - more melodies and more guitar effects. More to like, basically. Into The Light is great and Monitor is a decent rocker. It does descend back into tuneless noise again towards the end though.
The first 3 or 4 songs are blinders, but my interest tailed off midway through. Overall, it's a good album but I won't rush to revisit it.
I have a soft spot for these guys. Never my favorite punk band but still good.
While I enjoy the music of Siouxsie And The Banshees, I can't consider myself a fan of theirs. I know (and love) some of their more popular songs (the ones you hear played on Alt Rock stations. I thought that when I listened to this album - which is considered by many as their best - I would recognize at least one song. That didn't happen. I can definitely see how this album would be a favorite of fans. It's different. The only song that stood out to me on this first listen is Voodoo Dolly. I am sure I will grow to love the album as I listen to it more often - which I plan to do. But, for now, I have to give it a 3/5. Hope that that love the album don't scream when they see that. It does take me a while to get attached to something new. 3/5
3.5/5
Instrumentaalisti mainio, mut laulu meni suurimmilta osin samaan, aikasemminkin mainittuun kasarikategoriaan. Tykkäsin silti
yo this was cool. sounds like what willow smith would sound like if she dropped some decent music
3.1 - dash of the pretenders mixed with some cure. Decent record, but nothing really stood out.
Glad to listen to it, dont really need to ever again.
Good, but some songs are awful
i used to think they were really bizarre but they sound like a bunch of other stuff that i like
Different. Liked it. Would really have to be in the mood for it
Echoey/reveby vocals. Somewhat psychedelic. Not all that punk, given they came from the british punk scene but I definitely hear it in the guitars. OK but not something I'd seek out
Punk. But not aggressive. Love the guitar work, and her vocals are great! Monitor is my favorite track. Such a great riff and beat. She reminds me of Jefferson Airplane. I liked it, but overall, not an album I'll probably revisit. I'm glad I heard this though, and I feel I get their appeal, but just a middle of the road album.
This one needed some time to land with me. First impressions: More of the same, eighties wailing, New Wave, it does have some energy to it but still nothing outstanding. Halloween and Monitor kicked things up and I got more of a Goth/Punky vibe from it, I do like that it's very guitar driven and not synth heavy. Still a very 80's sound overall which I've heard a bit too much of as I've worked through this list, but when it's good it's really good, just some duds in there that dragged it down a bit.
Would give 3.5
“A dark sensual record that combined Sioux's pained lyrics with smartly evocative grooves.” But not as good as Join Hands.
Enjoyable. But very much of it's era
Quite nice post punk
Pretty weird. Won me over by the end.
Spellbound is still lovely. Still an odd mix. Not totally-related observation. In Notes on a Scandal, the Cate Blanchett character puts on a vinyl version of a S+tB song, Dizzy. She says (I think; if I were diligent about this, I'd do a check, but...) that it's an old favourite. This is impossible, tho. Said song didn't exist in this past, not on vinyl or anywhere else...
I respect how ahead of their time they were, but the album is distorted and fails to achieve a true concept behind the songs, regardless of the cool sounds they produce. Not bad, but not great.
These guys have a really unique sound so they're always fun to listen to. No real standouts on this album except for Spellbound though.
Average
This album hovers between 3 and 4 stars for me. I can't criticize anything in particular, and there are some licks I quite like. The whole things compel me very strongly to listen to it again, although I certainly wouldn't turn it off if it started playing. That sounds more and more like 3 stars to me. :-)
Reminds me bit about the Cranberries. Post Punk early Goth. Yeah not bad but also not very remarkable. Pretty repetitive. I am sure they have influenced a lot of bands especially in UK. Some may have done even better than them, e.g. The Cure, Bowie, Sisters of Mercy or Guano Apes.
Like the Go-Gos in a graveyard. I enjoyed it. Goth girl lead group was a fun listen. The songs kind of bled together but the overall vibe was unique.
I did't know them, quite good
Imagine it would've been huge in time and space
Enjoyed the first 4 songs. Rest of the album was a bit boring for me. Some good guitar guitar bass in throughout. The added tracks at the end were better than the originals. Great vibe all around and better mixes. Liked the drums more on those versions as well.
I’ve never listened to anything like this before. It sounded much more polished than perhaps I was expecting, and Siouxie’s voice is unique. Interesting. Probably a grower.
Reminded me of Pat B …. Ok
Not a bad album by any means, but not a whole lot here stood out to me. I really like the name, and there are some good melodies here despite the post-punk, grunge-y nature of things. I'm sure it was influential, but to me as a listener, 40 years later, it's alright. Favorite tracks: Halloween, Into the Light, Sin In My Heart. Album art: Pretty cool. A bizarre statue surrounded by a collage of musical scales. Someone's pet art project I presume. 3/5
Not that great, but with a couple of perfect tunes
Nice
It's fine, nothing special though.
Bien. Oscuro, con cantante femenina. Pero no me llega a encantar.
Had a slight "Yeah Yeah Yeahs" vibe, but I wouldn't go back to listen to more.
Rock. Un poco psicodélico, un poco punk
Good music
Much better that the other Siouxsie album we listened to. Really interesting, vocals more palatable and actually pretty enjoyable from start to finish. Would revisit this
Stronger than the last Siouxsie album on the list but the vocals again can be jarring. Apart from that a good album.
Wasn’t familiar with this artist before now. I really like the gothic punk vibe and their use of chorus effects on this album though.
Not bad
We can see how this was probably incredibly influential, but it wasn't our thing
This was a very nice surprise. The entire album gives me the sensation of being in the 80's being sad and living my life as a rebel teenager while my mom brings the fresh cookies to my cleaned room. Good experience! The songs are nice too, but the experience is great!
Better than Bob dylan
I have always liked siouxsie and the banshees.
Really enjoyed the upbeat songs. Production quality wasnt great but I really loved the guitar sound on a number of the songs.
I'm digging this album. Specifically Spellbound, Arabian Knights and Monitor. Why? Guitar and drums!
oh this is exciting, i like happy house from them. not impressed by the first track, i like her voice though. i like the second song better. third song is okay too. well i'm done. night shift was my fave track. overall it sounded good kinda but i didnt love it.
A decent post-punk album, but not as impressive as some of their other work I've heard. 7.8/10
No way, first track 'Spellbound' is the sample from Akala's 'Where I'm From' 👌 decent, enjoyable. 3/5
3.5/5 some interesting songs, i'll have to relisten to it
Emil said they were like dry cleaning but I don't think so
Entertaining enough, nothing to make me love it but nothing for me to moan about either
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Music is good. Singing is okay.
Raw, distinctive voice, they influenced a lot that came after, post punk/goth. Siouxies voice is a bit much for me after a while.
Can hear the influence it had on Sinead O'C, Florence, etc. A few decent ones that still hold up.
A little self indulgent towards the end, but decent
Decent post-punk/gothic rock album that started off weak, but had much stronger tracks towards the end. 6/10, second half is the best
The most surprising thing about this album is how early into the 80s it is. This band feels like the blueprint for 80s girl bands for the rest of the decade. Good stuff.
Musically it was slightly above ok. I’ll be honest though, I didn’t listen super closely. What lyrics I did hear I didn’t care so much for, so I feel a 3 is a solid choice
Nice and influential as I have heard that sound in so many contemporary artists...
punk rock mixato con altri generi
Dark post punk... OK. Songs: Arabian Nights, Head Cut
Enjoyed this quite a bit. Great sound.
Early Sioux.....more explicitly goth-ish. I lean toward their (relatively) bubblier shit. Finishes better than it starts.
Interesting 80s Girl Punk
...maybe a thousand better things you will have
I kinda felt like a lot of the songs blended together, but I've always liked their vibe.
Enjoyed it
It was fine. I liked their sound, but it was not anything too memorable.
Gefällt mir. Bekannter Song: Arabian Knights
Meh
Post punk on the way to new wave. Not bad!
Solid album
Decent. Didn't love it and didn't hate it. Definitely sounds like 80s alt rock/punk.
Enjoyed this...
Started good but lost itself half way through.
Interesting album lol
I mean yeah, it was the blueprint for "gothic rock" which inspired some great bands such as The Cure, but... 80's production, riffs with no soul, singing with no warmth.. I know it's the point here, but it just ain't for me. I've told you that plenty of times now already.
meh highlights: into the light monitor
The first few were promising but they strayed from my taste as the album went on
Flirting dangerously with one star. Just not for me.
Listenable
Nice and vibey 80s rock. Much better than what I was initially expecting. It was easy to listen to and transported me into a Stranger Things episode or a retro arcade.
Uah
There's nothing truly wrong with this album, but I just didn't get anything from it. I probably wouldn't listen again.
I liked this i just didn't add any
Music that’s good but too cool for me
I know this was super influential for a lot of my favorite artists. The music was super cool. Almost like a punk rock rush. But the vocals made it nearly unlistenable.
like the cure vibes but lk don't fuck w high pitched distorted fuckass guitars 2.5/5
Boring. Poorly recorded or mixed
At the beginning I liked this album more than I expected to. But as it went on I found myself skipping the last 30-45 seconds of every song as they just devolved into noise. It was like each band member was trying to play over the other instead of blending, and the vocalist didn’t have anything to do so she’d just make random noises.
Not good but not actively bad "Halloween" was easily the worst song on the album
They just sang the song titles a lot. A LOT. With a backing track of intelligible guitar. Works as background music, but didn't move me.
Not my fav
I was scared of this album before listening… 80s and by a band called Siouxsie and the Banshees 😬… and my fear was warranted. I thought melodically it was interesting at times, but could not connect with vocals or songs in total. 1.6
Meh rockpunk
It was fine. I could appreciate the music. But wouldn't listen again. Few good songs. 2/5
Weird kinda punk like rock.
Kind of like Hole, but progressive.
Sounds kinda whiny and repetitive
dont like
It's trying to be a little edgy and grungy and alt and all it ends up as is derivative and annoying
Post punk with a female lead. The Pretenders did it better. Not great. I recognized the British sound right away, that Rickenbacker sound. Thought I might be in for something, and then... nothing. Nothing grabbed me. Nothing memorable. I looked up reviews of the band and the album, and they were so far over the top (which I absolutely didn't agree with) it affected my feelings about it here. Was in-between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2, as I traditionally do with Meh kind of bands. Usually that's a 3. The effusive praise for this work was so off that it pushes me all the way down to a 2.
I like the singer's voice, everything else is just kind of meh. I just don't think i'm a fan of punk music, which sucks because there are A LOT of punk albums in this list.
Got thru about half of the album. Couldn’t take it any more.
Pre Listen: Another band I've heard nothing of in my life. Cool album cover art, poster worthy. No expectations. Notable Tracks: Voodoo Dolly - Least favorite song on the album. Goes on for way too long, is way too repetitive, and becomes just noise after about 2 minutes. Skipped around the 6 minute mark. Post Listen: This was like....maybe the most nothing-burger album I've heard on here since the Ramones. The tracks all blended together for me, nothing really shined, hence not 1 favorite track. This project is teaching me that I really dislike punk music. It's just noise man. The electric guitar is guitaring. The vocalist is vocaling. The drums are drumming. It's rock alright. It's about as interesting as a rock too. If you're into Geology maybe you'd like this album. Boring, 2/5.
I could never properly get into goth music but I really love it’s vibe. She’s such a talented singer. Fav song is ‘Spellbound’.
Sorry I didn't enjoy it
It was chill, not really what im into though
Nääh
I found this to be a bit tiring
I enjoyed her voice (very Ann Wilson from Heart or Stevie Nicks) but every song sounded the same to me. Not my cup of tea
This album was definitely not my favorite. It sounds like it’s from 1981 for sure. There’s some bits and pieces of some cool guitar and drums throughout it, but it was all taken away by that Pat Benatar style voice that I cannot stand. Some of the drums almost reminded me of a Phil Collins sound, but not enough to outweigh the not-so favorable in my opinion. No saves or standouts from this album. The song “Voodoo Dolly” was absolutely atrocious.
I’m sure it was groundbreaking in its day but outside of the historical significance I’m not sure it’s aged very well
2/5
This was ok, but got worse towards the end. The last two tracks were a bit of a dumpster fire
After hearing them name checked in friends and also other songs in the past I was expecting good things. Unfortunately the album started a bit underwhelming with ‘spellbound’ for me, however things picked up with the next track and the best song on the album ‘into the light’ The rest of the album just played- I had no need to find out track names as I didn’t find anything to stand out. It wasn’t a bad album- it just wasn’t good and certainly didn’t feel unique. An underwhelming 4/10 Best track ‘into the light’ Worst track- ‘Halloween’
Not much but noise to me
I only liked spellbound
Another time capsule trip - this time back to the origins of 80s Goth culture.
I hear the Smiths and New Order but a punk-jazz odyssey is not my jam.
Det er så tyyyyynnnnttttt. Redda av første låta.
..
I was really looking forward to listening to this. I used to love Siouxsie and the Banshees in my youth. And whilst the album did have a couple of good numbers, it was mainly noise..
Was not super into this tho not awful. Arabian knights was fun
Not really alternative in my mind, but seemed eh.
Starts strong but looses a lot of momentum on the second half.
Kind of boring ? Not my favorite
Too aggressive, didn't love it
Men creds for voodoo, spoookyyyyy, vibes. Kunne sagtens høre igen til oktober.
Another instance of interesting music that is diminished by a singer that doesn’t resonate with me. I know people love Siouxsie, but I never really liked her tone and it just takes away from what the rest of the band is doing for me.
Not feeling it really. I'm not a fan of early 80s post punk production, the guitars are too trebly, too weak, and mixed too low. All the of reverb you can muster, makes every song sparce but still somehow cluttered? The songs feel stretched out and not very interesting, plodding but performed as if they're energetic. I found I couldn't get into it, like when a child is annoying you by singing a song they made up and you have to listen to them to be polite and they just keep going and going and you really want to get up and do something else. Like, I get it, you're being all spooky and enigmatic, well done, can I go yet? The only good part is, above all the image and fashion that so many people latch onto in the scene above all else, Siouxie is a brilliant vocalist and performer. I feel like you have to suspend a lot of belief to get into certain genres of music, you have to let the theatrical and contrived songs do their thing and accept it for what it is in order to "get" it. With post punk, I just don't get it.
Decent overall but forgettable. Last track was rubbish. Wouldn’t listen again
There's something interesting in it, but I didn't really like it. Wasn't bad
Not my cuppa. I dont understand what cultural impact they had either
I didn’t know this band before apart from one song I liked I wasn’t impressed by the album it’s listenable not t bad but nothing that gets me excited to listen again
this clearly influenced bands like interpol & metric, maybe yeah yeah yeahs.
Just not super into the 80s new wave sound
I enjoyed this more than I expected to. I appreciated the clear guitar sounds, very of its time in a good way
It's ok
I hate goth rock and post punk so much that if you make a goth rock post punk album that I don’t completely hate then you must have done something right. I didn’t particularly like this album, but I hated it way less than I assumed I might.
Surprisingly not my thing
Eh
I really wanted to like this, but I don't. 'head cut' was fun when she was screaming and going wowwwowoww and making weird noises. The rest of the album is kinda dreary and repetitive.
I was really digging the first two songs and then the rest of the album didn’t go anywhere interesting to me. Still a fun listen!
i don't think i like this. cool band name. cool vocals. weird everything else. maybe adding this one to my list of reasons i hate british people.
Did not really enjoy
Rörigt
Didn't much care for this one
This album started off okay for me. I didn’t mind the opening track, Spellbound, and I quite enjoyed Into the Light, but overall it went downhill from there. I’m personally not a huge fan of her voice, and the rest of the album felt pretty similar and, at times, mundane, the same vocals, melodies, and instrumentals repeated throughout. Nothing really grabbed my attention or kept me engaged after the first couple of tracks. First two songs, 3.5, the remainder of the album 2
Overall found it kind of boring and uninspiring
I was listening to this during work and I literally felt myself check out for easily 3 songs of the album which I don’t know if that is my fault or the music…. I’m gonna blame the music.
Female rage-y but very repetitive formula
Not for me.
Some places here and there I thought were enjoyable, but for the most part, I felt I was listening to a Geddy Lee sing-alike w/ his garage band.
Not bad overall but only a few moments stood out to me.
2.5 - Overall forgettable.
While I truly believe that Siouxsie And The Banshees are important to R&R I do not care for any of their music. I'm assuming this is their best work?
I wasn’t a big fan.
Some interesting vocals and instrument use but not really my thing
meh, Arabian nights was decent
Spellbound best of a bad bunch
mid, but at least lead singer is woman
Love the drum tuning of early songs. Spellbound, Into the Night, Arabian Nights a great 3 song run, but a lot of the other songs felt monotonous and either flat or just noisy. Arabian Nights Night Shift
Not for me.
Interesting, probably important to the genre, but not my bag of cheez-its.
not trying to get cancelled but i don’t like this. i know i should but i dont. im sorry! maybe need to revisit and give another listen …. will if you’re reading this im sorry bc i know this is the weird shit that makes you foam at the mouth
Droned on, kind of boring.
This was very bleh and underwhelming.
Generally very one note, only a couple songs stand out even though no one song is “bad” on its own (except for the opening track)
Sounded okay actually but a 2.
Did not finish, I'm too busy
This is pretty good. I like the bass playing and singer's voice. It does wear out its welcome for me towards the end, but all in all a solid album.
Repetitive album with tracks that shine similarly by rhythm and cadence. This album offers a solemn consistency for those who seek it.
Started off really enjoying the vocals and layering of sounds, but it became repetitive and I got bored by the end of the album. 2.5/5
I enjoyed this. You can definitely tell they were the inspiration for lots of bands that came later! I came away with a new song added to my favorites playlist, and that’s a win in my book.
A few good songs, "Spellbound" was descent.
Bleh
Eh
Meh. Very forgettable. One or two tracks were fine but mostly I didn't really enjoy this.
I just don't like this style of singing. Sorry goths.
Not really my favorite genre :(
did nothing for me
I knew about Siouxsie and the Banshees and have only listened to spellbound and honestly, it wasn't really my vibe, so I never really explored them much after that. After listening to the whole album, it still isn't really my vibe except for "Into the light" which was pretty cool. This was only my first listen so maybe it could grow on me if I listen to it another time.
this was not great. the lyrics weren't interesting. music was boring
I really really wanted to like this one... but I found it quite grating and was relieved when it ended.
I like the songs monitor and Night Shift. The rest of the album, I’m glad someone made this album and I’m happy for them, but I don’t love it. This album listening thing has made me very irritated with my music critic voice in my head. Like I don’t need to be a music critic. My opinion on music shouldn’t sound like a music critics opinion. Ratingthings from one to five stars kind of set it up to be a music critic exercise. I feel compelled to say something interesting about why I like or don’t like an album. I think for the most part I’ll stick with how it makes me feel and if I like it or not. I don’t have anything like that to say for this album because I was pretending to be a music critic while every song. Next time.
Initial impressions: I don't hate it, but I don't care for it.
This isn’t the worst post punk stuff we’ve had but still not snuck a 3
Never been a big fan. Not terrible but not great
Tomciu daje 3, Zosia 2/2-.
A lot of screaming, I wasn't in the right mood for this album.
The problem with Siouxsie And The Banshees is, the general aesthetic and the overarching artistic ambition are not always matched by the quality of the final product. On this outing, the modulation drenched guitars, gothic mood and distinct vocals outshine the actual songs, which are mostly fairly unexciting. Not completely awful, but they're capable of better. Juju is a bit of a slog to get through, with little reward to be honest.
It's fine. Not a huge fan.
Weird, discordant at times. Some songs seemed not too bad, others were borderline unlistenable.
Ass
Melhor do álbum: "Night Shift". Pior do álbum: "Voodoo Dolly".
Dá pra aproveitar Into the Light e Monitor
Ok I guess
Some high points but ultimately not 3 ⭐ material
I saw Siouxsie and the Banshees at the first Lollapalooza, but back then the only track I really knew was Kiss Them for Me, thanks to MTV overplay. Listening to Juju now, Spellbound hits hard right out of the gate—sharp, urgent, and totally magnetic. After that, though, the album loses steam. The songs start to blur together, carried by the same floaty vocals and increasingly bizarre lyrics. Shrunken heads? Voodoo? The atmosphere is cool at first, but eventually the weirdness feels more like a gimmick than a groove. Juju starts strong but doesn’t stick the landing.
It was honestly an alright listen, not my style and felt as if some of the songs were very very similar.
Good, but songs felt quite repetitive. Hearing the same riff repeated for the majority of the tune lost it for me. Monitor was one of the better songs and Spellbound.
Outside of spellbound, I wasn’t spellbound ⭐️⭐️
Really whatever.
Musically quite repetitive and flat. Rarely do songs on this album change much over the runtime and the vocals are very samey as well. Never quite got Siouxie and the Banshees or many bands of that era and style. Couple decent songs but deducted marks for how unremarkable most of the album was. Top Tracks = Into The Light & Night Shift
Meh
Proto-emo/goth. Spellbound is good. Clearly sort of an experimental album
Was alright, a bit off for me
Not a fan of punk.
More weird British shit. Didn’t love it.
Ela rates a 1 star, Adam rates a 3 out of 5 and I rate it 2
Didn’t dislike it, but didn’t love it
Dull, unlikable
not bad
I don't like it. If this had had a good producer, it might earn three stars. Now, it's barely two.
Not for me
I got kinda bored of this album really quickly, it’s a bunch of similar ideas and it doesn’t tonally change all too much, good songs just a bit repetitive
Love women on the list; however, another boring album from Siouxsie And The Banshees. A kind of bland punk sound that doesn't help with a mellow tone that persists through the album. Never been a big fan of that post-punk sound, and this album doesn't help.
Not a single song stood out to me
It was okay.
For as much as I like punk music, post punk just doesn't do it for me.
Didn't really enjoy this. Favourite Track(s): Monitor, Sin In My Heart Least Favourite Track(s): Halloween
Other than spellbound this did nothing for me. Can respect the art direction but just didn’t click
Similar to British Steel, I like the music this would have inspired more.
Heavy use of the tom-toms on Juju, which I guess makes sense from the Banshees. Their second entry into the 1001 Must Hear List is not as strong as their previous entry. This one is a middle of the road and comes in at (2.4*s)
I wasn’t really into it.
More 80s new wave post punk that is forgettable and doesn’t move me.
I found this manic and discordant so I didn't particularly enjoy listening to it but at least it wasn't boring.
I WANT to like this but I’m struggling…. I did appreciate the odd hiss / cat sound!
Meh. 2.5 rounded down.
This started out OK but then went downhill. Thought the music sounded like The Police on a few tracks. Another band where their popularity has always puzzled me.
Slightly better than The Scream but still not aurally enjoyable
Very witchy vibe. This album wasn’t my favorite and I have a feeling I’ll forget what it sounded like by tomorrow, but I can appreciate what they were going for here. Top 3 tracks in order for me were Night Shift, Spellbound, Headcut.
Mouais
Spellbound Arabian Knight
Arabian Nights! The album reminds me of Transvision Vamp. No wonder, also British from the same era. Solid 3 in the beginning, but drops down to a 2. Don’t like it that much
Föll mig inte riktigt i smaken.
Was really never a fan.
Same as the last album we’ve reviewed from them: this is fucking shite
Iconic songs, no doubt. I however struggle to enjoy the album. There's too much of a feeling of sameness. I also find out quite noisy, and that combination with the singer's voice just doesn't really do it for me.
I get Sisters of Mercy vibes. No idea who came first. Sometimes simplicity with lyrics doesn’t work for me. Would Into the Light be considered gothy blues? There really isn’t much to this band. I’m guessing their legendary status is mostly based on them being a female led band delving into the goth and punk genre. Maybe there are more women in the band, the name would tell me so but I do not research a band when I listen so I’m not influenced by what I read. I don’t consider this great but everything does work well together. It’s straight forward goth and punk music for the time it as released. Choice cut: Arabian Nights
Meh, rotete
Seriously it’s just noise. It’s not ‘groundbreaking’.
I knew Spellbound which I've never held much opinion on - it's fine - but nothing else on this album. Now I've heard everything else, I think "it's fine" might be my position on the whole album. Post-punk has never been my thing. 2/5
Couldn' get into it, I might revisit in a couple of weeks or months to see if I just don't like it or my mood had any influence on the reviews. Two srs for now.
Solid album, enjoyable. High 2s
Sounds like early U2. Some good songs but a lot of treble in the production. First song is solid. Night Shift is too. Didn’t really hold my attention though. Listened in a long hot walk.
I did not like this. I like woman singers fronting rock bands bands so that was good. But the music here was just not good for me.
The first couple of tracks are pretty cool, lost interest after that. Decent enough on second listen but not one to revisit. 2.5
Really mixed bag for me, and I'm kind of surprised by some of the other reviews here. Some of the songs here are seriously great, some of them I think are fine, and a few are genuinely some of the most painful and tough musical listens I have ever experienced. Like -- what the FUCK is going on with Into The Light?? That legitimately might be the worst song I've ever heard in my life. But, then, Spellbound fucks. So. Yeah. Fave songs: - Spellbound - Monitor - Night Shift
This album is ok. Not great. Not horrible. Why can’t the albums of artists with their best known songs be chosen?
there’s nothing visibly wrong with them but don’t know why i just can’t enjoy how everything sound together. tried a second listen on spellbound after reading so many great reviews and ok this one is nice
I should love this, I don’t.
Another album with loud distorted guitar, yipping and yelling vocals, and kinda shitty drum tones. “Voodoo Dolly” was scary.
Is it bad to say I like the sound not the vocals? In 2025, it feels like overly affected.
1 good song
Spellbound is the most interesting song on here but the others really didn’t capture my attention.
Meh. Maybe should have paid more attention to be honest. Probably worth trying again
Fun rock album with a different sound. No song really dragged me in though. Nothing wrong with it, its just not something that I would pick when choosing music.
Not for me
1981. British rock band with clear 80's vibe. More dark and mysterious. Decently enjoyable.
This has more isntruments than most alt-pop stuff that I am used to from the 80's. That's refreshing. Not for me though - still 80's pop, it could very well have been early 90's too.
Nah
I like some of their stuff, but this wasn't it
