Reviews (page 12 of 13)

Nothing wrong with this but not sure I'll remember anything off it if I hear it again. Elevator music

I enjoyed the twist and creativity he adds to Jazz but at the end of the day it’s Jazz.

Jazz is really not my type of music. But this album had fun notes and beats.

Fusion jazz is not my bag, man

I'm sorry --- I've tried this once before and never again

Bits of this are funky. Bits of this are cool. There's some good bass lines in here. But it's just so long. All of those details become lost when they're repeated and developed over such long track times. It becomes annoying and it's too much. Cool album cover though. 2.5 rounded down.

Random. Mid. Senseless in the list.

Again a jazz album misses for me.

Not a fan of jazz fusion but in this album there are sounds that are accessible for all. Good for 1974 and ok for a background tune but not one I would revisit too often.

Funky, jazzy, some interesting beats but songs are just way too long for me. 0/4 liked

Nice background sessions

#867. Oh. We're doing jazz again. I thought we were done with that. 2/5: jazz

79. alright

I liked the first two, really didn't like the second two. I can appreciate this for what it is but I probably wouldn't return

instrumental virtuoso electronico tunes that I don't care to listen to, even though there's some sick sections ripping along in the songs. Just a guy jamming.

not my thing but pretty cool regardless

The slow jazz was not for me

Not my bag.

Not a genre I particularly enjoy. It went on for a really long time…

Not my music taste at all.

Just a bit too jazzy for me

I even played watermelon man in middle school jazz band and was still underwhelmed. Long but unique. Loved the use of different sounds and instruments, overall not my thing

My timing colliding with this one might have put Herbert in a tough spot. I was in the mood for fun/joy — got elevator music in its place! Don't get me wrong, there's some rhythm and groove here that appeals, diverging a bit from jazz's improvisational and solo-first approach, but I'm not gonna just pretend to sound smart: this was a wank-fest for me. WHERE'S THE BEEF?

Jazzy and funky, as advertised. It's aaaight, but not my jam. I think this is jazz for people who can't stand what jazz usually sounds like.

I sometimes just don't understand why people like jazz.

The stereo effects in chameleon go to far, very hard to concentrate on the melody when it's flipping sides so frequently. It started well, I was even enjoying it, then when they keyboard kicked in, it pissed me off. Track 4 did the same. Interesting sounds but pretty vapid instrumental stuff, could likely get into it, but it would be for a short while and would lose interest long term.

Chameleon Sly

chameleon fucking slaps, absolutely brilliant, I love it, second song was not really memorable, third one is okay I guess, last one is okay again

Groooooovy stuff but 40 minutes of funky jazz with no lyrics is a bit much for md

Some of it was ok, but the more jazz-y stuff in some of the tracks gave me a headache

I appreciate the complexity of the music but it wasn’t the type of music I would choose to listen to.

Maybe this is me being lazy but I saw the length and I only listened to little bits of each song. The beats are fun but it just gets annoying because I prefer lyrics, ultimately coming to the conclusion that certain jazz is not for me

I’m glad there are people who enjoy listening to acid jazz. But I’m not really one of them. After the first few minutes of each song I kinda started to get irritated.

Too much gimmicky stuff for me. Don’t mind instrumental at time but this didn’t do it for me.

This dude signed the constitution? That’s what Tommy boy said at least but idk? His music isn’t really for me, really weird and just kinda noise pollution to my ears. But he is playing near me in may should I go chat?

This was interesting. The first song was really enjoyable. The second really irritating, The third really boring. And the fourth somewhat boring but mildly interesting. Doesn't average out that well though, sorry Herbie. I like some of the more electronic instruments intermixed though, especially on Chameleon.

Låter helt okej men knappast någon aha-upplevelse.

i don’t like jazz sorry herbie

Not for me. The lack of lyrics made me kind of distracted.

I’m not really a big “sounds” person. I think I could appreciate this if I listened another time through but alas I only had one listen. Time to move on

Jazz, no lyrics at all, tracks are 10 mins long, it’s good but not for me

It reminds me a bit of robots the movie. It’s only 4 songs, but the first song is 13 minutes long hahah. I like it whilst playing along w acnh, but I’m not keen on the high instrument, it’s a bit grating. The musicality of this album is great, it’s not my personal taste, but I can recognise how cool & clever it is. Vein melter is my favourite track.

Not my fav, I don’t think I’d go back. At first I liked the sound as I do listen to funk like this occasionally but the chamelon was too long for my liking. 2/5

Instrumental 70s soundtrack stuff

Overall not my vibe but I did enjoy that the songs were each 10-15 mins long and had their own winding arc. Very funky

Familiar and Meh for me

I'll happily listen to a complete jazz album, and I enjoy funk, and I appreciate crossovers. This fusion was just...fine? No doubts about musicianship. Some of the instrumentation on the tracks sounded silly or was downright irritating.

No thank you

You either like this stuff or you don’t. It all sounds like one running song to me, to the point that Spotify kept playing Herbie Hancock and I didn’t realize we had moved on to some other album. It’s background music that doesn’t even register as background music.

This album makes me feel a lot of ways and I’m not so certain I like it. I admire the artistry behind the sound but if this is abstract art, this makes me uncomfy. At some points I felt this would be good listening music but also if there was ever a lull in conversation it would be hard to ignore.

chameleon: good bass and would be repetitive enough to use for studying but has way too many jumpscares so im not able to actually use it, and why is it 16 minutes long?? i dont really like it but heard way worse so its a 5.8/10 watermelon man: had high hopes cuz i like the title but um. seriously what the fuck is this. 1st part is so dissonant for what, i actually kinda like the 2nd half but still bad. why the dissonance back at the end i dont like this. big skip. maybe like a 2/10 just for the middle part. absolutely not. sly: um. no. better than watermelon man but atp i think its pretty fucking clear i do not like jazz. what is this. bass is good, sax bad because wtf, drums not too bad but i do not understand the concept. why 10 minutes long. what do we need 10 minutes for. 1 is too long already. why fake end the song at the middle. what the fuck is going on. 3.5/10 vein melter: like the rhythm. drums kinda melt into the bass, its funky, sax actually kinda fits into the picture. still dont really get the concept but its aight, background music typa thing. 6.7/10 overall avg: 4.5/10

Thought this was like a car or something. Honestly skipped a few songs. Though it could’ve been my mood.

Super short album with funky jazz songs. I wish there was singing but it’s just instruments. Maybe would be a good listen if I was high on mushrooms but definitely not a sober listen.

Genuinely just sounds like background music, idk why I just haven't enjoyed much of the jazz I've listened to

Definitely inspired tons of guys I do like. Similar to bob dylan that way, where I don’t love them but I love what they began. The best damn hold music you ever heard.

ja przepraszam bardzo, ale spodziewalam sie normalnego albumu a nie melodyjek. jeśli chciałabym posłuchać samej melodii bez tekstu, posluchalabym muzyki klasycznej. jestem zawiedziona

Lowk didn’t listen

Not for me.

Not exactly sure how to rate instrumentals as albums compared to others with actual lyrics but it sounded great of course.

Not my kinda music

Im not really a fan of this one. No singing.

I like the Abstract Jazz but it's not really my thing

The long songs just kind of turned into background noise. Just didn't keep me engaged on it. 2/5

Clearly very impressive. Very impressive. Not for me though, good luck lad 2/5

This is just my opinion, but this album did not do it for me. There's this part in Chameleon that sounds like weird pac-man sound effects that aren't played in the same key or time signature of the rest of the song. Sly started off strong, but when the electronic saxophone came in, it all just started to fall apart. Vein Melter, in my opinion, is the only redeemable song on this album.

Best Track - "Chameleon"

not my style

A wallpaper of funky jazz sounds with keys at the fore. Inventive but a bit dull.

497/1001 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

Zu jazzig

Heard about him before. Eh, it was funky and had the potential to be interesting but something just didn't click for me 2/5

Nah. I’m good.

I found this boring.

I do like some jazz albums but not this one. Sounds very 80’s.

2.5 Stars, fine background music

Ok, it took me a few days to get through it. 'Chameleon' and 'Watermelon Man' were both v groovy, liked them. I could hear the inspiration of 'Sly' but it was pretty noisy (but trying to put Jimmy to sleep at the same time wasn't smart on my part). Overall, doubt I'll revisit, but glad I can check it off my list.

this is experimental LMAO

I don't like it, but I don't hate it either. Very repetitive.

2/5. Overall pretty chilled but each track does get boring after a few minutes. Some interesting snippets of music within some of the songs. Not my usual genre of music but not the worst thing I've heard!

Tja. Ikke helt for meg.

Super funky

I should be in the credits of this one because the leaves crunching under my feet did a lot to save this album from a worse ranking

Funky keyboard

Quality background music with help from a year 8 music student using the sound effects on the keyboard.

Chameleon is great for sampling, but it was quite exhausting to listen to the whole thing. I really wasn't in the mood. I'd have to listen again without headphones or depression.

Some songs sounded like they were performed for an orchestra of flies

Not my cup of tea

Standouts Chameleon

4 long songs. last track was boring first was great but in worn me down I hate Jazz really hate Jazz and this was slow moronic jazz

urgh awful, couldn't even listen to it. jazz again? but weird jazz, weirder than usual

it was fine only because I was playing cards

- wow did not expect the songs to be that long - 4 songs first one was like 14 minutes Likes: - haven't heard much Jazz but this sounds pretty good Dislikes: - I just can't get into Jazz (so sorry)

Did not listen entirely. I mean, it’s good as a background music, the jazzy vibes are really cool. But kinda weird to listen to it like that.

I find this one hard to review...it wasn't what I was expecting at all. 4 songs that all blended into one. VERY experimental for the time. Early synth use. Not for me but can appreciate it's ahead of its time.

First couple of tracks, I was so excited, thinking I like fusion jazz now. But that didn't last.

A little funk, a little blues. But nothing super caught me

Ok. Not my music style. ★★

Groovy, bet nieko ypatingo.

Not a fan but it has moments I liked but on the whole, not my jam

4 songs 41 mins… ah the 70s :) Herbie gets way fuckin down on this album. Great production, tight playing, awesome sounds and instruments used. I really love when synth was incorporated early on. So dope. Fun album. Great for chores around the house or a road trip. Vein Melter is my fave🤘🏻

This was eclectic and jazzy. I liked it.

Loads of noises

Just not my vibe and that’s okay.

I feel wrong for giving this a 2 but nothing really did it for me. Long and evolving, but not to places I wanted to be.

70er Jazz. Melodisch und von der Stimmung ok. 2/5

Not very good

Often hailed as a jazz-funk masterpiece, but strip away the legacy and what you’re left with is a repetitive, self-indulgent jam session masquerading as innovation. The grooves are slick but shallow, the solos meander without purpose, and the whole thing feels more like background filler than a focused musical statement. It’s technically impressive, sure — but so is a calculator. If you’ve got a taste for structured, idea-driven music like 70s prog, this album might come off as directionless and bloated. Historically significant? Maybe. Musically engaging? Not really. Verdict: More vibe than vision.

Couldn’t get past the first song. I’m OK with a long song but opening with 15 minute plus meandering song it was too much.

Funk… not my funk

Okaidokaiii

Well that was weird. No idea of the significance or impact. That's gonna be a no from me dog.

I'd heard this album was 'a lot'. Random sporadic jazz, weird keyboard sounds. Not entirely awful, but hard to pin on to. It's either way too complex or a simple melody repeated over and over. I didn't particularly enjoy myself. It felt like the achievement of reading an old time classic book. You're glad you got to the end but not really sure what was going on in the journey. If it was a live band, I'd have walked. Or at least spent the night at the bar. 2 stars.

Sounds like funky elevator music, or hipster coffee shop music.

This was probably cool and daring in the 70s, but these days I find it repetetive, partly annoying in its sounds, boring, and the rating heavily intellectualized.

Not for me

More jazz, but kinda more techno electronic. Good?

I know the name and the reputation, but outside of his one 80's hit I don't know a great deal of his music. 4 songs, 40 minutes. I'm diving in... "Chameleon": Funky groove but it got a little ear piercing in the middle and definitely a little long for my attention span. After the middle bridge it went full Jazz and lost me completely. "Watermelon Man": Definitely not my groove, I have very little appreciation for true Jazz and the meandering repetition, I just find it boring. I'm not mathematic and it lost me instantly. 40M people would disagree, it's got a fat listen count. "Sly": Again, a jazzy track that sounds like soundtrack music to a 70's movie. 3 mins in that annoying horn took over and I was out! "Vein Melter": More like mind melter, I was drooling when I woke up. I'm just not sure how music like this gets you a next album but he built a reputation and like a "chameleon" he changed with the times and built out his sound. I respect the artist and the art, just not my thing. 2.5 stars.

Jazz is not really my thing. Kinda boring. Some of it sounds so chaotic and anxiety inducing, I prefer the smoother bits of it. It is cool to have a bunch of different songs all blend into one.

I guess I don’t like jazz that much

Funky funk funk Not for me

Not it chief Pretty groovy I'll give it that

I guess I just don't get this kind of "all over the place" jazz.

Forgettable unfortunately, but still good

6/10 olvidable

Am I playing Toejam & Earl or am I watching an episode of Sesame Street? I thought I’d like it because of how similar it is to the music I love, but it just goes on and on. I think I heard a seagull in there somewhere. I should like this, but I didn’t and I wanted to.

This is just random noise making, especially Watermelon Man. The music (?) is annoying and nothing on this album appeals to me.

Ik ben nog niet klaar voor jazz

So. Much. Noodling.

Musika ondo entzuten da, jazz animatua da, baina Jazz musika ez da nire gogokoa.

largely listenable without causing me the anguish a lot of jazz does

An intriguing fusion of jazz and electronic. Groovy. Good to have on as background music.

No. I did not enjoy this at all.

Standout Songs: Chameleon Sly Woah this album is weird. I honestly don’t really know what to make of it. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, but I was more just left confused by it. So many unique sounds. That’s the word I’d use to describe this album, unique.

Meh. Kind of annoying.

Headhunters. I once wrote the lyrics for a (so far) unreleased blues song titled ‘Mr Watermelon Man’ possibly while trying to learn the harmonica.. (Sample verse: ‘Mr watermelon man/Mr watermelon man/The Klan killed his mother/the cops shot his brother/now he’s left with no other/friends but his watermelons’). It sounded nothing like track two of this four track album. Opener Chameleon starts of as a solid chunk o’funk which could easily have been the theme tune for a 70’s cop show but at almost 15 minutes long it loses its way a bit in the middle. Herbie’s take on Watermelon Man is more of a dinner party vibe than my version (especially if the main course was jazz funk noodles) and Sly is also a bit…. ‘backgroundy’ although both are good grooves. The promisingly titled Vein Melter doesn’t do what it says on the tin. Could have been edited a bit more tightly (Hancock’s half hour?)

I did not really get this one, and the songs are very long.

Well, it was very interesting. Something I've never heard before and I don't think I will again. It wasn't completely my style but I can see how it challanges boundaries of what music is, so interesting.

Not my cup of tea

i'm sure this is great and that herbie hancock really is as integral to music as people say, but i honestly don't care for flashy "wow that's really impressive on a technical / skill level" stuff. also just too whimsical for me in a theater kid way. clearly i'm bringing a lot of baggage into this

All right. Just instrumentals aren't really my thing, I only listen to it if I really like something. This won't be going into any of my saved songs, but the I kind of liked the second song, might be worth another listen.

Yeah I didn't fuck with it I fear but shit happens. It was honestly probably the absolute lack of lyrics that sent me. That only works with classical music. I was just really bored idk.

Decent

I really hated this. Like I said on yesterday’s I’m just not a jazz person but this one like forced me to pay attention in a way the one before did while giving me personally nothing for it. I really hated “Watermelon Man” especially, just ear bleeding imo. I will never return to this. But I listened to it before I died…unfortunately

Definitely have to be in the mood for it. Interesting but don’t love it.

Good background. Not a huge jazz fan.

Interesting change from the recent albums. Very groovy - but not my every day jam.

One pretty good song

Watermelon man was good, the rest were bad and too long

I do not really like this album because the vibe it brings is eerie. The album cover reminds me of Coraline lol.

the first song started off alr it like started off strong but later in the song it was just like jazz I guess

Not my jam. Love the cover art, though.

Interesting, but not my piece of cake

Very interesting, watermelon man is my favourite. Not my type of music

Loved the sound and overall vibe but it was a bit too experimental for me

This album often felt like Bitches Brew-lite, and as someone with quite the disdain for Bitches Brew, that is NOT a compliment. It feels often that nothing is happening for the sake of another part of the song, but rather everyone sounds like they're performing different songs than the other players, and if that isn't happening, its issues lie in just how mellow it is. It doesn't feel like an album to put on while having a drink on a Sunday evening, its too excitable for that, but its not an album for a party environment either, as it can get as slow as sludge, to the point where its hard not to call it "muzak" and nothing more. Usually a chilled out vibe would be something I would appreciate for the breather it provides, but on this album it just feels like too much of a 180° to be relaxing, and instead has the listener going from zero to 100 back to zero, giving one whiplash more than anything. There are parts to enjoy, as everyone is at the top of their game performance wise, and it also sounds quite ahead of its time for 1973, giving it a futuristic tone that rival the coming synth-heavy instrumentation of the late 70s. It just feels too much and too little, and I either have little time to process it musically, or little reason to care. I can see its revolutionary style, it wears it on its sleeve with that slick album cover, but this does nothing for me musically but annoy.

This is incredibly annoying. 2 stars or D-.

I get it... This is Herbie Hancock, my absolute hero from Simple Minds - Hunter and the Hunted. And then this record is meandering, jazzy (the bad kind), musical misdirection. To an exception I can also credit this record for a Beck swipe on 'Cellphones Dead' for 'Chameleon.' - One by one...

2.5/5 - Nice, but wouldn’t listen again (except to the part I mention below) Standout (part of a) track: - 8:34-13:21 of Chameleon (4.5/5)

The album was not bad per se, but I doubt it is something I will listen to again.

2.5. Great musicianship and tones, but a bit of a boring listen.

hmm why do people like this

Didn’t care for it

I have enjoyed jazz more recently … and this is nice enough .. it didn’t really keep my attention and I think I prefer smoother stuff or some fusions for now , glad to have heard it though

Cool grooves, unique. Glad to listen to something that would have otherwise passed me by

Neljä ylipitkää kappaletta. Mutta hyvää musisointia.

Maybe that’s part of the intent, but it’a hard to take this ”seriously” - there’s just something unserious about the sound. (And no, it’s not because it’s funky, which is usually ”fun” and not necessarily comedic.)

Not really a fan. Prefer classic jazz. However, I can see why it was a groundbreaking album at the time.

It kinda just turns into background music after a few minutes, but I will say Sly playing in the background as I’m late and racing to work was an experience

Am I really going to listen to this? I've been subjected to plenty of HH and he's brilliant and spectacular and he plays the sort of music I like the least. Listened to the whole thing - still don't like it.

1.8 It sounded interesting for a while... May need to reconsider this review a few years from now.

I enjoyed some of the funk and grooves to this album, but I'm ultimately more of a lyric and personality-focused person when it comes to investing in an artist. While I found it pleasant enough, it became background soundtrack music to me - especially the latter half. I felt a bit like Emma Stone in La La Land when Ryan Gosling is trying to explain jazz music to her and it ultimately flies over her head. I get it's good, I just realistically won't ever go back to this unless I need background coffee music. Sorry! 2.5/5

3.5/10 This started off promisingly - squelching funky keyboard, good vibes. But it soon descended into the type of jazz that I just don’t get along with. Really, really not for me, this would be a one star if not for the funk fusion elements Best: Watermelon Man

Just okay sly was nice

Just sort of noise, though not terrible noise.

- A vibe at first, but then a bit long

Not up for jazz. All bleeds together. 2/5

I know very little about Herbie Hancock, but based on what I do know, this is unexpected territory for him to be dabbling him. Perhaps more expected, there is a high degree of jazz improvisation occurring here as well. Not one bit do I deny Herbie's impact on jazz music, or music as a whole. But this music was just not my thing.

It's a cleverly worked album but just not my genre so I struggled to listen to the whole thing. I'm a great admirer of Hancock though but just not this album

Occasional good bits with a good groove, but a lot of it was a struggle to listen to

Um, pretty ok. After about three songs it slipped into the background and it didn't ever grab my attention again.

FUNKY!! Enjoyed

Electronic jazzy, but nothing special.

Enough of that jazz.

Beetje nerveuze muziek

# Album Name: Head Hunters # Artist: Herbie Hancock # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Not a bad vibe but the tracks are incredibly repetitive. Some good muscianship no doubt about it. Jazz just isnt my thing. Many have commented on this album as a "gateway to jazz". I still dont get it. I appreciate the skill but Jazz just isnt for me. Im not sure ill ever get it. Couple of tracks on this album are way too long at 15+ mins. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? Maybe as background music but thats it.

Meh. Not for me.

not for me

When I say I like about half of the songs on here, I don't mean I 100% like 50% of the songs; I mean I 50% like 100% of the songs. I like the funk bassline and percussion in every song, and I hate the brass jazz on top of it in every song. Unfortunately 50% is a failing grade, so I did not enjoy this overall

Head Hunters is a mixed album for me. It's also a good example of jazz elements I like and dislike. There are some good funky sections, but then every song feels like it outstays its welcome. Jazz songs can feel like they aren't really going anywhere, and that's how Head Hunters makes me feel. There is clear skill involved, and it has enjoyable moments, but it has the classic erratic feeling like a mad, erratic keyboard player is chasing me down the road in a ridiculously bright yellow suit and I just want it to be over with.

Too long, too repetitive. Completely failed to grab my attention. Hardly works as background music.

A four track noodely album? Is there any real point to this?

Neat. Jazz. IDK i don't think i really appreciate it as much as I should.

I should give the caveat that I’m not a huge jazz enthusiast. I do really like certain forms of jazz (typically Latin styles or in big band formats), but I don’t often find myself choosing to listen to it over other genres. This album is no exception. It’s got a great jazz/funk fusion feel with some sounds that were very different and new for the time when it was released. However, it’s a bit out there in style for better or worse. For as revolutionary as it is, it now comes off to me as something to play on the side, vibe out to, and let fade into the background while working on something.

Chameleon rules

Jazz and the 70s is not a good mix. The funk element redeems in places

Yeah... Not really sure what that was.

Meh...nothing really exciting here.

Pretty sure this guy signed the Declaration of Independence. Album started fun then got boring

Overall: groovy. You can tell they had fun making this album. Some tracks are quite long-winded and chaotic but, for the most part, I did enjoy it. Made me want to grow a moustache and become a cop in the 1970s (I am a 30-year-old British female). Would I come back to this album? I think I would if I was looking for instrumental music to work to, but probably wouldn’t stray past Track 2. For an instrumental album, I’d give it 3 stars but generally speaking I’d give it 2. Best song: Watermelon Man Track 1 - Chameleon - very groovy start. Very 70s. Wow this song is 15 minutes long. No wonder there are only 4 tracks on this album. My attention span isn’t long enough for this. By the end I was really looking forward to changing it up. Track 2 - Watermelon Man - it took me a while to come back to this album because I really struggle to get excited for instrumental-only albums. #bandkidtrauma This one is a bit different. Did this band influence Childish Gambino by any chance? Or did he sample this? Quite cool. Enjoyed this one. Track 3 - Sly - This is potentially a good one to use as an alternative for the Avengers Theme when I’m rushing to do last minute bits for work. It’s so chaotic that it’s making me feel stressed and I’m just sat looking out the window. Perfect for rushing about. Not the biggest fan of the last 2-3 mins though. Becomes a bit too ‘jazz’ for me. Track 4 - Vein Melter - this is very mysterious woman in a dimly-lit smoky room vibes. Weirdly also gives me Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds and The Sims vibes in parts too. The soundtrack for the coolest film you’ll never see.

Funky but repetitive experimental jazz.

Not for me

Started to enjoy it, but it became repetitive before the first song had finished.

Good funky jazz but didn't grab me.

Die Platte ist mir etwas zu jazzige.

Some ok jam sesh

What is this? Space funk jazz? Honestly, the songs are all pretty good, except there is either too much martian noise going on or there is one annoying and incredibly repetitive element that makes me feel like I have just been programmed with a trigger to kill any living being within an arm's radius. To be sure, I won't be listening to this again.

While the musicianship is good, the songs all sound like they were part of a jam session instead of fully fleshed out songs. Don't dislike what I heard but also not interested in revisiting this one.

Its fine but not something I would listen to again. Watermelon Man has particularly annoying backing instruments.

Could fall asleep to this (in a bad way). Pretty boring but had just a bit of that jam band essence. If Grateful Dead is a Dr. Pepper, this is a La Croix

Head Hunters is often praised as a landmark in fusion, and I respect what it achieved, but as a listening experience it is uneven. Herbie Hancock mixes funk, jazz, and electronic textures with undeniable technical brilliance, yet at times it feels more like an extended jam than a focused record. The grooves are tight, but they can stretch past the point of enjoyment, turning hypnotic repetition into something that tests patience. “Chameleon” is the obvious standout, both for its influence and for the way it lays down a groove that has been sampled and referenced endlessly. Still, unless you are deeply into jazz-funk experimentation, the record can feel indulgent. It leans cerebral, prioritizing musicianship and innovation over emotional impact. As a piece of history, it deserves all the credit it gets, but that does not make it endlessly replayable. I respect what it represents, even if it is not an album I will find myself coming back to often.

Pretty unspectacular

For me it’s a no. I find jazz boring. I even played in a jazz band for a few years to try to learn to appreciate the genre. Didn’t work.

3rd Jazz album in a row, if this can be classed has Jazz? For my purposes I will say it’s more Jazz than any other label Wiki has given it. This the first Herbie Hancock album I have listened to in full so again subscribing to this has taken me places I wouldn’t normally go. I like this album although not as much as the last two list offerings which were more traditional jazz oriented. Quite a lot of synth features which is not a bad thing but my favourite track is Vein Melter. Probably because it borders on the ambient side of things giving a smooth and calming influence. Not an album I would return to in a hurry but was nice to hear as a one off. 2/5 19/6/24

God I don’t like funk. Seems like it’s good at what it’s trying to be but it’s a slog to listen to.

this should be a 3. it is good but i need lyrics to truly connect to things could i write poetry to this? n

I've tried to get into this album before, but I just can't. I always end up listening to Fat Albert Rotunda instead.

This is cocktail lounge jazz. It makes good background music but otherwise is just ok. 2

secondo me alcune canzoni sotto sostanze stupefacenti ci potrebbero stare.

Mario Odyssey vibes… mostly Metro City for some reason

Favourite song chameleon

Rollo.

Awful stuff

Not bad. Not my favorite. But I see where its place is on the list at least. 2.25

Couldn't get through it. I'm sure it's an important album and well regarded in it's genre but listening felt like a chore. Most bored I have been all week, and I had to watch the bachelor finale...

Well it started OK, but descended into too much jazz wankery for my tastes.

Meh I’ve grown into jazz, but evidently not this type of jazz. Too much fucking around here for me.

Herbs a dog but I’m not with the vibe.

These rifs remind me of 1970s tv theme songs and backing tracks. I keep thinking of Buddy Ebson as Barnaby Jones wandering into a nightclub to investigate a case.

Acid jazz hippie shit

Welcome to twang town. Very Starsky & Hutch (original series).

Not unpleasant to listen to, but boring and uninteresting background noise. There are 4 hour long YouTube videos of logs burning which evoke a stronger emotional reaction.

An old school porn soundtrack for a Nintendo Wii game.

Its a product of its time. Its not bad but just not my jam. Would fit perfectly in to a 70s cops TV show.

Any album with 4 songs and it's 41 minutes and 34 seconds long makes me feel uncomfortable. And album with 15 songs and it's 20 minutes is the dream. It's okay. I hated watermelon man. Chameleon is okay and I can see Haris playing it. I want to like jazz (I believe this is jazz) but it's just quite difficult tbh. It slays that he's called Herbie though.

Uhhhh...yeah, this wasn't for me. I recognize the musical talent here, but I guess I'm just not a jazz guy.

I was actually really enjoying this for the first 4 minutes of the album, but it really went downhill from there and i couldn't stand it for a lot of the rest. 1.5 stars

Will put it in my jazz playlist to give it a few more listens but not sure if I like it

The first 5 bars told me everything I needed to know. Boring Funk is fine, but the synth spoils it. It's not awful, but it's only one step up from that. It's a 2

Sounds like we’re on a good, late night jam session at Jes & Jon’s with some bad, tune-up jazz blended together. Also has a menagerie of sounds on a couple of numbers. (1.9*s)

Starts off good then tapers off, some interesting sounds and fusions going on throughout. Pretty easy to listen to, groovy but nothing super exciting. At least it's composed and not freeform, very 70's. Jazz and synth are hard to mix well so I'll give it that. I like the eclectic use of various drums. For perspective, if this were in my living room it'd be phenomenal.

Some funky muzak. I wouldn't mind grooving to this in an elevator or dentist office. Some songs could have been broken up into multiple instead of one long one. All in all a worthy listen but I won't be hunting the bins for it.

Started off groovy. Lost some of its luster by the end but overall some decent jazz fusion stuff. Definitely sounded like it was bridging genres and ahead of its time. Maybe not an everyday listen but works for background at work or while chilling. I dug the first half but was over it by the end. Been aware of Herbie Hancock for a while but don't think I've ever heard anything before. If this is what his other stuff sounds like I might check it out periodically. It sounds like he has assembled a handful of bands/projects over the years so not sure if that is the case. Either way glad I gave Head Hunters a listen. 2.30 stars

Not sure what all the hype is about on here? Impressive, sure, but boring for me. Don't want to have to listen to a 16 minute song ever, regardless of the genre etc. Really respect mateys discography and can tell he's a sound guy and very talented. Not for me though. 2/5

I don't hate it, but I didn't save any songs for later. andddd then I kind of ended up hating it...

Not for me.

Amazing how much mileage Herbie Hancock got out of the opening riff on Chameleon. These guys are master improvisers, but I find the lack of melodic motifs, and unending improvising is fatigue inducing. I appreciate the creativity, but I can't imagine any circumstance where I would want to play the entire album.

I guess the musicianship is good but I find it tedious.

I have not heard of this album before. Not the biggest fan of jazz and it was especially bad because all of the songs on this album were very long. Will not listen again.

Nicht mein Geschmack.

Interesting listen. Really not my cup of tea....but it was okay.

Musste mich etwas zwingen, mich darauf einzulassen.

Vil gefa meiri athygli

Too much funk influence, isn't really a style I prefer. Not a bad album though

it's a funky/interesting listen. think it's best just to put it on & let it play through, rather than listen to one track at a time.

didnt make my heart go doki-doki Significant 37/116 Liked 17/116 Added 4/116 YNN

Meh 2 out of 5.

I think I just have to admit that I don’t really get most jazz. I have no idea what’s compelling about this. It seems like it’s well done?? But I’m not sure how you can tell?

Was okay background music

Funky jazz. Definitely reminds me of sci fi from that era. Definitely not my cup of tea, even as far as jazz is concerned. I can, however, appreciate the artistry and do understand why it was revolutionary at the time.

A bit too jazzy for me.

already listened to it, decent

i don’t think i’m a person who can sit through long instrumentals BUT i still thing it’s fun and the music is groovy

Ground-breaking. Accessible. Iconic. Zzzzzzzzzzz. Great bathroom or elevator music.

snoozfest

Nicht mein Geschmack.
