Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Some musical artists just don’t appeal to me because they’re unable to transcend that they’re not of my era. Janis Joplin is one of those. I get the talent, and the great voice, but it just comes off as a lot of wailing and screaming. But given the same type of talent 15 to 20 years later, in an era I can relate to, and I love it. Listening to PEARL, all I could think is that I’d rather be listening to Joan Osborne’s THE EARLY RECORDINGS (1996), so that’s what I did. And Joan’s mostly live album is still amazing, blows me away, where PEARL just feels dated and unrelatable. Janis Joplin, Pearl: 3 stars Joan Osborne, The Early Recordings: 5 stars

move over not feeling the flow kinda gets better then goes back to low and slow cry baby lot of plays not bad woman left lonely p good half moon meh buried alive instrumental kinda nice tho my baby this album really starting to remind me of another album but i just cant place it me and bobby standout best song on album for me, noticed on other songs but her vocals are great mercedes benz joke song but hey she can sing trust me kinda like this one more than half the album idk why get it while you can not a fan 3/5 fantastic voice not my type of music, 0 liked songs

it was aight I think

Good stuff really liked the gospel vibe

it's iconic. she is iconic. But not my thing.

It is a fun record. Not my style of music but I recognize the importance of this record to kids all over the US and also its popularity with millions. The songs are a little weak musically.

3/5. It was okay, nothing bad. Wouldn’t listen again by choice but didn’t hate listening to it.

Not my type of jam.

I’m here for Bobby McGee

Nina Simone said (or sang) that Janis Joplin told her story very well, but that Billie Holliday told it even better still (okay, those aren’t the exact lyrics but the point of it stands). The story Janis Joplin tells here is a classic. Compelling blues backed by a powerful and honest voice. Heartbreak and despair. Others have told it better.

A fun album with some good songs , some were a bit too screamy for me but it was still good

Janis Joplin’s voice is so unique and expressive, but without her this would be pretty boring California hippy rock and roll.

I have heard all these songs but had no idea they were Janis Joplin or even on the same album! Fun for sure, hard to tell if she’s actually a good singer.

Janis was a name I had known, but I had never listened to her work up til this point. Got to say I enjoyed it quite a bit. Her raspy vocal delivery sounds passionate and powerful. Her voice up against the piano on some of these tracks just sounds incredible.

Soulful. Like it!

After years of pretty much only hearing the chorus to Bobby McGee, I was led to expect a lot more screeching. Fortunately, this is way better than that.

Funky, groovy - auf jeden Fall ein vibe. Ihre Stimme klingt irgendwie immer anders. Der A cappella Song hat mir gut gefallen.

This may be the favorite record of the crowd I want to be associated with least. Not her fault, but still.

Classic Joplin. She's not really my thing. but I recognize her greatness. 3.5/5

The wife liked some of it.

great album! love the sound and feel of it, not actually my style that much but liked it anyway, very cinematic

I was surprised and delighted to find that Janis actually has more depth and range to her instrument than her screamfest radio hits would let on. I found her mostly charming and she has a really solid band for a straight up rock outfit. It’s not music I’m compelled to revisit though, and it was corny and churchy in spots. It would have been interesting to see where she might of gone had we had her longer, but I suspect that her ability to sustain the sort of savagery she attacks her vocals with would have been short lived whether she was or not.

Not bad actually, Janis I was not familiar with your game

Move Over

Album 1089 of 1089, decent one to end off on. What an experience, total nightmare at times if im being honest. My takeaways: - I wouldn't do this again. - This list, at least for my taste is too cluttered with a) underwhelming late 60s psych rock. Some of this is good, but too much is too much, I would call most of these defining or essential at all. b) Wayyyyyyyy too much bad 80s. I hate the 80s, but the amount of British post-punk and glammy cheesy poppy stuff is way too little for my liking. I think less UK and more of the rest of the world's music would be more interesting and varied. - Some serious misses that im surprised aren't on here. - I really dont think anything should be addedd to this list until at least 10-15 years after release. So many examples, especially in the 2010s, that shouldnt have been here where other should be in its place. - fuck morrissey - I really enjoyed some of the lowest rated because they were so bad and different that they were kinda fun and served more purpose than the 15000th Elvis Costello album. - Most of the albums I gave 5 stars to I had already heard and knew I enjoyed. There were very few discoveries that I immediately fell in love with (~10). -On that note, I started doing this to expand my taste in music. I know youre not supposed to like and agree with everything, but if youre doing this for that purpose I might suggest a shorter list (100-250 albums) and find other ways to expand your taste, really this list helped me find what I dont link more than what I do. But hey, thats just my opinion, and maybe some of these will grow on me??? -This Janis Joplin album was pretty good! Cant complain for a good way to end it. - and lastly, fuck morrissey

This wasn't amazing, but it was better than anticipated, mainly because it had a bit more rock bent to it than I was anticipating. Starts out great with Move Over, which was my favorite song on the record. After that, it wasn't quite as great, though it had some cool tracks throughout. She can really sing and there's so much character to her voice, that's what really makes this potentially special. I just didn't really connect with a ton of the songs for whatever reason. 3-stars.

This was a weird one. I really enjoyed the second half of the album (what would've been the B side tracks) but did not care much for the A side. I think I tend to like Janis on slower songs that feel like a blues/folk combination. When it gets too fast and too loud it just doesn't do anything for me, and it's also where I reach a breaking point with her voice.

3 1/2 stars actually, really cool top 3 Crybaby Get it whileyou can Mercedes Benz

I liked the big sound feel and the motion from the voice of Janis and the layers upon layers of instruments and sounds and blend together. I also appreciated the country ish feeling vibe of some of them. Overall not too bad.

Pretty good, solid 3

Country-Pop-Rock mit einer unverwechselbaren Stimme 3/5

Don't know if I have anything insightful to say. I'm pretty sure I've heard multiple of these songs in commercials and movies, which might be colouring my thoughts on them. These feel like something my dad might have in his cassette tape collection. Nostalgic in the way I tend to find any 70-80s song nostalgic; old, but not so old as to feel completely unfamiliar. Nice to have on in the background. Love the 'That's it' followed by laughter at the end of "Mercedes Benz". Glad people have been doing that with their songs for many a decade. Favourites: 1. Half Moon 2. Buried Alive In The Blues 3. Mercedes Benz

good but there wasn't really a stand out song to me

I’d give it a 3.5 if I could

Iets te veel Paradise by the Dashboard Light-ish, zeg maar.

likeable, not my genre

A high energy, jaunty, and interesting singing style are the hallmarks of this album. It was an enjoyable listen, but nothing really stood out to me. I’ve heard Bobby McGee a bunch separately, and that song is just fine.

Groovy, tight soul music with Janis’ booming vocals. Typical 3 for me.

Not my thing really. Can appreciate the artistry. 3 stars

It's fine but not into this older album.

Solid blues rock album. Some great vocals, then on some they sound a bit too choppy. Nothing much more than solid, I fear.

This is one of the albums that I grew up hearing the songs on a regular basis. So, for me, the material is little stale. Janis had a powerful voice. It’s just too bad that she died so young.

Helt okej.

She’s Janis. She’s made amends. Give her a Mercedes Benz

I wish this had a half-star system. Closer to a 3.5 than a 3 to be honest. I get the hype behind her voice, very powerful and raw. 3.5/5

It's good. Second straight day I get an iconic female vocalist. Second straight day for my taste it's a 3.5 What keeps if from a 4? To be a 4 I would have to want to own it, or in modern parlance, download it or a few songs to a playlist. Nothing here quite makes the cut, although I do enjoy hearing some of the songs from time to time.

I can't decide if I find her voice to my taste or not. A couple of the tracks are pretty good, but overall not really my sort of thing.

I enjoyed this album overall. I thought it had some great sound, and I enjoyed the rustiness of Janice’s voice.

good stuff. little bit of funk, little bit of blues. favorite song is Half Moon, but Move Over is a stellar opener

Rating: 6/10 Well made stuff but I won’t pretend to be the biggest fan of this Janis Joplin record, there just weren’t many highlights that stood out to me. Country blues that sounds distinct from a lot of the American rock that was popular at this time, just never amounted to anything more than mild enjoyment. She only has one other album, maybe I’ll find something more in that one

Pretty nice, probably iconic, not my type of music to put on and chill to 5.2/10

Janis Joplin var A LOT. Pissedygtig, men synes en halv time er lidt meget haha

Well, what a voice. A powerful raw vocal performance from Janis is the main feature of the album but the band is really great as well. A tight rhythm section, some funky guitar solos and a delightful use of keys and rock organ make for a brilliant blues rock sound. Sadly all these great parts culminate in a rather underwhelming experience for me. Definitely some decent songs but for whatever reason none of them really stuck with me. So I’m giving this a rather reluctant 3 but it probably deserves higher.

Album #88 Janis Joplin: Pearl Though I have long been aware of the legend of Janis Joplin, mostly due to her unfortunate membership in the 27 Club, I had never actually listened to any of her songs. I sort of just lumped her in with the hippy crowd of the 60s, music that you had to be fried on psychedelics to enjoy; I am still making that assumption for the Grateful Dead, but perhaps if I listen to them, they might prove me wrong like Janis did. This music is definitely still in line with its time, but it has a lot more soul and emotion than I would anticipate from a laid-back hippy. Joplin’s voice is one of a kind; it completely transforms a song like ‘Cry Baby’ from solid to iconic. Though this album is short, it feels dense due to both Janis’ spirit put into it, and the aura surrounding it and what it means for her legacy. Janis will now take up more space in my mind than simply the woman who gave Leonard Cohen head on an unmade bed and died young. After hearing Pearl, it’s clear she was in the Chelsea Hotel for a reason. There are some songs which don’t hit as hard for me, and I’m not huge on the blues sound in general, but for what it is, this is a pretty damn good album. Best Tracks: Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee, Move Over Worst Track: Buried Alive in the Blues Score out of 10: 7

Good singing but hard to get it to a 4.

Janis Joplin is for sure a gem worthy of accolades. This album I feel marks her potential more than anything, as the songs themselves are not all the best.

6/10 - cry baby is a highlight, she has a great voice, also didn't realise that the Mercedes-Benz song is from her!

Obviously good, but I'll probably never return to it

Obviously an incredible voice but I just do not like this type of hippie music.

Patron saint of bar room belters and bruised balladeers. She’s got something strong and powerful but trying over a whole album

Nothing crazy one way or the other. Sounded like a Janis Joplin album to me!

I know of Janis but I never really knew anything about her. Her power is obvious. Thats for sure. That's the biggest takeaway from this record. She can belt out anything and it has such an overwhelming presence. You have to listen. And she might have some writing chops. Im not that type of listener but I could see it. Its a good record. But im not so into it. Shes undeniable but everything else is more questionable for me. Ok oldheads dont get mad but she reminds me of Adele in a way. They both have that power. They both do pretty popular styles for their times. They are both not supermodel type women. I just see alot of parallels. They aren't the same but I could see both having similar types of remembrances after their time. Maybe im wrong but thats how I see it. Good record from a great singer

What a good artist ! Great album Song I like: Move over, cry baby, me Bobby mcgee

An iconic voice, some good tracks but just not for me. 0/10 liked

This album is a 3.5 for me, and I spent a lot of time going back and forth between whether to round up or down. I've decided to go with 3 stars because I sometimes I find Janis' voice fascinating and other times grating. I was at a 4 until Mercedes Benz when she changed keys like 4 times unintentionally. However, the band was tight throughout this album. Some amazing musicianship going on.

This was a bit of a mixed bag. There were some tracks I really enjoyed, but others were too close to folk/country for my preference. Overall I'd say I enjoyed listening through, but in future I'd probably listen to specific tracks, rather than throwing the whole album on.

finally listened to Jenis, even though I've known about her for a long time I would say that this album is for special mood - it's summer, hot and hazy, u go for a walk around the city in your boho outfit, well that's what I like.... And her voice is such a gift, amazing, profound. Not sure that I'm gonna listen to this album often, but definitely gonna add some of Jenis' songs

An overall good album.

70s brilliance

Very good! 3/5

Says this is the album she'd not finished before she died, which gives the listen a bit more resonance. Think her voice started grating on me after 2nd song however. Liked Half Moon where she sang and didnt shriek as much. Can get why its inspirational though.

Go easy on the fags n booze Janis

Not sure if I've heard this album all the way through, ever. I was surprised by the confused feelings this resulted in. Lots of the songs are not all that good, musicianship is great, Janis' voice does the heavy lifting on the mediocre tracks and there's quite a few covers. "Mercedes Benz" does give me goosebumps.

Did not love it but still had great songs

I liked this more than I would have guessed. Other than her popular songs I didn't know much of her music. Favorite tracks: A Woman Left Lonely, Half Moon, Me and Bobby McGee

Solid, easy listening, no major stand-outs, no huge misses.

Strong vocal performance, so so songwriting though some real highlights

It was somehow exactly like I expected but also nothing like I expected.

I think maybe it has just found me at the wrong time in my life

I always reference Janis Joplin but I had never heard her music and I get it. She broke the gendered norms inb the 60s in the age where she could not have a credit card unequal pay and no birth control janis was the punk rock pioneer of the indie and cool girl that we all know and love today. There is no Marias or Paramore or even stevie nicks without them in my opinion. That being said for the influence the music is okay a bit too 60s for me. Coming off of patti smith that felt more refined.

I did not like this album very much. Its not the album, its me.

I listened to this album as I messed around in Sonic Racing: Crossworlds, tackling my first ever online races. My head was foggy and I had a minor headache the whole time. I listened again on headphones as I did laundry and made the bed. I love how expressive and full of raw emotion Joplin's voice is throughout this album, I have a tendency towards appreciating those kinds of gruffer singing styles. There is something about the instrumentals across this album that I just find a little busy; I often found myself feeling overwhelmed by the sheer amount of conflicting sounds coming at me at once to the point that I started losing my grip on the music in totality. I tended to prefer the songs which had simpler, less busy instrumentation, allowing Joplin's personal, honest, and often witty songwriting to shine through. Highlights: Cry Baby, A Woman Left Lonely, Me and Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz, Trust Me

while her voice can sometimes be grating, it is phenomenal. enjoyed listening to some of these songs i don’t think i’ve heard before and will have to give it another listen 3.5

Best song is move over the rest are a little old timdy for me. Great start though. 5/10

In 1971 there was no way I would give this type of music any house room. This was peak Prog time and all my attention was directed there. I remember Janis tragically dying which prompted a lot of coverage but as I was outside her sphere of influence I soon forgot about her. What a pity because now I can understand what she brought to music and why a lot of my musical heroes were influenced by her. That said whilst it is a great album displaying immense musicality it still is not the type of music I can get my head into but it is worthy of being on this list. 3/5 17/2/46

Groovy.

I Enjoyed it

Unfortunately this list has turned me off of this late 60s sound. Amazing vocals but the rest is lacking. 3 Heard before? Some Owned: No 48/203 (23%) Will I get: No

Yess! Another female led album. Move over is such a bombastic start to this album! It pushes in all the right places and pulls back when needed to. Cry Baby just shows off the vocal talent. This track isn’t usually something I’d enjoy, but it’s musically incredible. That building piano really does it. There is so much cool piano in this album. At this point though, halfway through My Baby, it’s starting to get a little bit samey. I’m having trouble picking apart the tracks. Me and Bobby McGee had different vibes to the rest of the album so far which really threw me off. It was almost country while everything else was rock-esq power ballads. I guess we’re sticking with country at this point. Mercedes Benz was 100% country. I’m going to say this gently, as she’s obviously a very talented performer, but her voice has gotten so grating. It’s an incredible voice, but I’m genuinely struggling. Get it while you can was a fine closer, I’m just done with this album at this point. 3/5 ⭐️, 6/10. Only because I’m trying to be objective. 42/1089

You know when you get a really nice wine? That first glass really hits the spot. Janis Joplin’s voice is like that. Listening to a full album = necking a Bordeaux.

A titanic voice that will be remembered. I’m not really into the arrangements of Joplin’s songs—very white-blues isn’t-this-groovy stuff that sounds really muddy. Still, her talent is enough to elevate this. Best song: Cry Baby

Not my style but can’t deny the impact.

Her voice really is singular and several of these blues jams are great. Whole thing haunted by its posthumousness. Get It While You Can.

It's good but I can't seem to love it

Pretty good but generic.

Good album. Blues, country, rock. Janis has a powerful and emotive voice. Some of the songs are a little bland, but there are some real highs. Notable tracks include Cry Baby, A Woman Left Lonely, Half Moon, Me and Bobby McGee, Get It While You Can.

I's a great album, I enjoyed listening to it but it did not catch me that much especially the music mercedes benz

I forgot to listen but i’ll update this ojay

Good but not for me

Pretty darn good

Amazing voice.

Amazing voice and what sounds like an amazing person gone too soon But too shouty for me but some great tracks

Good vintage record, really liked the vocals on “Crybaby”. Didn’t grab my attention much overall, but it’s still kinda fun to listen to.

Some good songs, bit before my time.

kind of good but sometimes it did not hit? 6/10

Eh, I don't get it, not for me.

Vocals were a bit shouty- sounded old and strained, bass was cool and funky in some songs, Half Moon was the best song: funky intro and gospel vibes, Mercedes Benz was the worst song: only vocals but short song and sounded strained, Overall 6/10, not my type of music but not bad

Pretty good

Not my stuff

Janis Joplin's catalog is the blueprint and foundation of raspy voiced over-singers for the following 30 years. Good album though.

Classic rock album. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #259 Best Songs Cry Baby Me and Bobby McGee

good instrumentation.

Feels like I've heard her name hundreds of times before, but never heard her songs. Good lyricism and political commentary, but not really my style.

ravi norm iyo, pretty dsolid ubralod dges magrad nekida

The softer Aretha Franklin worship stuff does not work for me. Pretty great stuff to be had, here, though, as her voice really elevates the songs. "Mercedes Benz" is such a banger though

I don't have a whole lot to say about this album, its pretty good. I've never taken it upon myself to dive into Janis' music aside from Piece Of My Heart, so this was a decent time.

It's good and she has a great voice. Didn't grab me though.

amazing voice. top songs; cry baby, move over, me and bobby mcgee

I don't know how to feel about this one. When I was a kid my dad and my sister would play this one a lot, and I didn't like her voice, so it's not something I've listened to in a while. Today, I'm still finding that grating quality on songs like 'Mercedes Benz'. She's a really tragic fucked up depressing figure and frankly it frightens me. This album also reminds me of my own futility and mortality so it sort of bums me out. 3 stars I guess? Not sure what else to say. 'Cry Baby' was used in a Dior commercial a few years back. Again I just feel really really bad for her.

Cool person, unique voice

норм

It was good. Very churchy like when a pastor is speaking during a sermon at certain times lol

Mercedes Benz is an all-time song for me, especially sealed up with that awesome laugh at the end. Otherwise, I’m not a huge fan of Janis’ ‘Aretha Franklin and Joe Cocker mash-up style’ - I wouldn’t turn it off, but I probably wouldn’t put it on either

So fun! I love the energy, the whimsy, the yearning of this one:) Favourite tracks: Half Moon and Cry Baby

Mercedes benz was less enjoyable than nails on a chalkboard. The rest was fine though.

Good album. It's an album that's on rotation in my home. For me, it's a great album to listen to after having a few drinks with friends after 1am and you want to keep the vibes going while things are starting to wind down. Lots of great singalong moments in every song but also moments where the music isn't overtaking the evening's conversations.

not bad but i wouldn't listen to it again

Sounds country is some songs

I don’t have anything negative to say apart from small moments on the album I didn’t love. Her voice is very interesting, and I enjoyed the instrumentals. I feel it would continue to grow on me with more listens.

Me and Bobby McGee is the one I enjoyed the most. The rest were also good. I also enjoyed the instrumental Buried Alive in the Blues. Her voice is also great. Mercedes Benz is nice. Get it While you can, was the last one In the album; a nice music to end the album to.

I didn't have much time to listen to this. I liked what I heard, but not enough to go back to it.

Blues é rock Rock é blues Lord…

Like a delicious biscuit, very digestible but not much nutrition.

I feel like I should be rating this higher but it just didn't hit me like I wanted it to

Vocals were not it for me (very scratchy and not like in a metal way?). and I didn't hear too much special with the instrumentation. It is definitely experimental and creative in a lot of aspects and has it's own tone and personality, but just not for me. One thing I do praise about it is its very upbeat attitude. Kinda like the B-52's except easier on the ears.

#1 track, not what I expected but 9/10 #2 track, a bit slower - I prefer it to 1, although there is it a bit of ‘talk singing’ which I don’t love #3 track, ok this is my favourite so far #4 track, little bit funkier and upbeat, less singing more music #5 track, very nice nothing special #6 track, good again doesn’t stand out to me #7 track, her voice is so much clearer and nice without the loud music (I love the music but it’s nice to have a slower quieter vibe) #8 track, can’t lie don’t love the start.. not my fav #9 track, oo I way prefer the start of this song, #10 track, good didn’t stick out to me

Refreshing vocals, production is outstanding. The songs do get a bit repetitive after the first few tracks but its a short listen so its not a really big deal. Solid album 👌

i liked half moon. that's it. would not listen again sorry ms. joplin 🙏

I struggle with this as i can see why some would consider this a great album, but it’s just not for me. Cry Baby unfortunately just makes me think of the perfume adverts it currently soundtracks. Half moon shows off Joplin’s vocals but just doesn’t connect. My Baby just sounds like an earlier incarnation of of Cry Baby. Me and Bobby McGee and Mercedes Benz provide an enjoyable change in style, but there’s not enough to lift this album from just middling.

I much preferred this offering of Janis Joplin than the previous - I found her voice to be much less grating and actually enjoyed quite a few tracks (and was surprised that I knew a couple of them). In particular, I enjoyed “Half Moon”, which had a funky style, and “Buried Alive in the Blues”, which was meant to have vocals but, as Joplin died before they could be put down, remained on the album as a sort of tribute in its instrumental form. Normally I don’t like instrumentals but it works here. The rest of the album is pretty tolerable, and I didn’t find it a hardship to listen to, much to my surprise.

The generator decided to follow Joni Mitchell with Janis Joplin - the 70s female singers are out in force. Janis sounds like she must have had a permanent sore throat, but I do really like her voice - it's raspy and bluesy, and so full of emotion. And this album has a ton of Hammond organ on it (which I love). And it's a snappy 34 minutes! I would say I think I enjoyed this a little more that Joni yesterday, but not quite enough for a 4, so 3/5

Pearl is carried by the volcanic brilliance of Move Over, with the rest feeling like loose jam sessions circling Janis’ raw power.

Judging artists who die tragically young on their work is always hard. We see them a perhaps the height of their creative talent, and without the long years of either slow decline or transforming into new and different sounds. Their work becomes exceedingly difficult to judge: does one look at their work at it's moment in time when it meant the most to the people it was written for without the judgement of long years, or instead do we look at the work firmly placed within its years and those surrounding it? I can think of a fair number of artists whose cultural impact was so great, but it is hard to tell if it was so powerful on it's own merits, or if part of its power comes from the brevity of the artists' lifespan and the small collection of work that comes with it? (I think this about all of the members of the 27 club, even though I myself wrestle with it). Janis Joplin's Pearl comes into this picture. Though some of the work points toward a direction rock was going in the 70s, it's hard not to feel as if this is more of the same from Janis. It is also hard to decide whether her solo work surmounts that of the work she did with Big Brother and the Holding Company. However, there are some killer and unforgettable tracks on this, and Janis's idiosyncratic vocal styles certainly make it a memorable work.

Hyvä levy. Pitää kuunnella lisää Joplinia. 3,25/5.

I get the iconic, legendary status, but her voice was an acquired taste that I'm not sure I'll ever appreciate. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (5/10)

very cool and powerful! probably won’t reach for it again tho

Vette groove in Half Moon. Get It While You Can is goed, maar had gehoopt op een meer uptempo einde.

Solid album through the whole. The beginning always hits harder for me but kind of blends together in the end. Solid, just a not as memorable.

Janis is an UNBELIEVABLY talented singer, and defined a generation. The songwriting is fantastic and the music is great. But it's just not my bag. I can't get into her no matter how hard I try. I just don't like her style. The album should get a 5 but I am basing my rating off of how much I like it, just like the others.

Liked the alblum. Like JJ. But this is the extent. I enjoyed listening but JJ and the alblum is a one time listen through.

I was pleasantly surprised and have a lot more respect for her music. I was expecting a lot of her loud, whining, crying and yelling music like in Me and my Bobby McGee. I really enjoyed this record.

Nice solid album

I completely appreciate her amazing singing ability and style - amazing - but I find it quite annoying. Can’t listen to more than one song. Just too much fry and volume I guess.

A very fun album, the singer has an strong voice. Glad I listen to it at least once 3/5

It’s about what you might expect. Pretty middle of the road

Starts off with a pretty groovy track in Move Over. I've never been much of a Joplin fan--I've tried a couple times but it never sung to me the way some of her peers from this era did. Anyway, on re-assessment, it sounds a little better. Even Me and Bobby McGee didn't annoy me as much as it use to. Probably still just a high three though, but I can start to see where the appeal is at least.

Janis Joplin was undeniably a great singer and a very important musician often defined by her early passing. Many songs on Pearl build to Janis crooning dramatically over the entire band joining together. Despite Janis’ domineering voice, I wasn’t drawn in by this album, and I realized that this combination of ideas just doesn’t move me.

I like it! Will probably not incorporate it into a playlist but could see myself putting it in the background whilst I work. I like her grit and the music is really pretty and developed. I like trust me a lot and her voice is fun! Probably 6.5/10

Slow melody ,fun different voice!

Her performance is great and makes for a great listening experience, Janis unfortunately lost to the 27 club we were robbed of what she could’ve gone on to further deliver, this album also has one of the greatest covers of all time. In saying that this album is hurt by being mostly covers which imo as always hurts its legacy

Very helpful for heist planning

wild fire energy, soul and blues 70s, husky voice. now i know more about club 27. i understand why it's important release but it didn't catch me

Sometimes you can see a picture of somebody and be completely surprised to learn they have a drug problem. Other times, less so.

Normally I adore powerful singers, but this album was very average to me, I am not quite sure what it is missing, but there are better options my favorite track was half moon.

*1971. *A little Janis goes a long way for me, so this 34 min album is perfect. *She sounds so young (she is) but her voice is complex and the songs feel layered and emotionally charged. *I'm surprised I liked this, but I will revisit. RATING - 6.5/10

I understand why she is an influence to other artists. Not for me though

Shouting

Some solid cuts on here

Some really great songs and some duds.

Folk, blues, country, screaming. I could listen to this again.

An undoubtedly great album, bit unfortunately suffers from what I call John Fogerty syndrome. Joplin's voice is so harsh that I'd rather put on one of two songs than listen to the album all the way through.

Pretty good. I am liking this way more than the last time I listened to it. Making delayed trains around Köln much smoother.

There's an interesting quality to her voice: It feels alive and her attitude is a big part of why it feels that way. I don't think it stands out as much today for me since so much music has been influenced by it already but this is still a good listening experience and I wouldn't mind listening to it again.

Good but I wasn't too interested. Note: I accidentally listened to this in shuffle so that may have affected my experience

This was quite a listen, she goes very high and the songs lyrics are very passionate and personal.

lowkey not my vibe yall

Janis is a one of a kind but a studio album has a hard time capturing why. This is a solid effort but the real magic was in person.

I think her version of “Little Piece of My Heart” is a top-tier rousing anthem. I knew it must be a standout. This album meets expectations. Enjoyed it, but wouldn’t listen again on my own.

It was not my fave genre, but quite informative to listen to.

It's a really really good album. Sounds incredible. Janis' singing is incredible. The band plays fantastic. Also great great songs on it! Some favorite non hits are Half moon and trust me, the opening and closing songs. Not in the mindset to write much more now, but it's a really good one. Don't be mad at me, It's a 3 but a very high one! Like 3.7,8

Classic and unique, this album doesn’t overstay its welcome yet has a variety of tracks. Great guitar riffs and an iconic voice.

Sometimes when listening to an artist i've heard about before, it makes me realize that I just never had any real clue about them other than hearing their name. First of all, yeah......no idea Janis Joplin died in 1970.....Maybe i'm confusing her with Stevie Nicks or Patti Smith? I wasn't alive in the 70's so I can't really say i've really heard her music other than Piece of My Heart.....which I only just now learned was Janis Joplin. Don't blame me ok? I basically don't know who sings anything, which is why i'm doing this list. I've heard that Janis is basically the queen of Rock, but this album is so confusing because it's so soulful and bluesy. It is rock, but it fits in closer with The Temptations or Sly Stone than The Eagles or the Rolling Stones. Her passionate raspy vocals also caught me by surprise. Another talented life tragically cut short. I think it's natural to compare Amy Winehouse to Janis, but I think the reality is that Janis' popularity was sky high at the time of her death, which had to have been soul crushing to so many people. Hard to compare it to someone today. Like if T Swift passed away suddenly? Or Chappell Roan? Either way, i'm still not a huge fan of the late 60's early 70's soul, blues, rock. Janis definitely has a unique and special voice and I can see her influence on so many artists and it's a shame that we lost her so young. Cry Baby is an incredibly passionate song and such a perfect example of the power of her voice.

Her voice is iconic but I can’t listen to a lot of it.

Not bad, not great, but a lot of soul in that voice

The difference in enjoyment between Buried Alive in the Blues and Mercedes Benz told me everything: I love the Janis Joplin backing band, I do not like Janis Joplin's vocals. Unique for sure, not for me.

Soulful blues with good backing band.

honestly liked it more than morrison hotel. though it feels a lil weird bc it clearly sounds like a drugged up white woman trying to sound like a black woman

Groovy

Surprise bangers

Definitely one of those albums that I can imagine was absolutely mind-blowing at the time. Janis definitely has a unique and impressive voice. 3.5/5

Great singer and musicianship here, but this is not for me

Obviously the vocals are the standout here. Raspy but with great range and power. Album feels unfinished in places which is unsurprising given Joplin died before its completion. Half Moon was a standout.

I appreciate this for the historical and political relevance it has. And, I can dig Janis rocking out. But, most of the songs sound exactly the same. Good for a decent listen through, but not going to make it into my regular rotation.

Good! A bit too bluesy old school for my tastes.

not a Janis fan

good but not like thaaat good

I like it and can see how revolutionary it was for the time. i know people love her voice but it doesn't do it for me that much. But I can recognize the talent!

I have honestly never heard anything like this first time listening to janis which is crazy love the jazzy rock vibes

Never really listed, good album

Prva stvar vrhuuuunska. Zbog toga 3/5, 6/10

Not for me quite bland for 70s rock but a great voice

Funky blues rock with Joplin's raspy powerful vocals makes for a fun listen. A few ballads too with more space for her voice than previous albums makes this one to listen to.

Talented but not my vibe

I used to go to this terrible biker bar in my college town, mostly because they were really loose with the carding, but also because a pitcher of beer was five dollars and they had karaoke some nights. Every karaoke night there was a guy who would do that one Bloodhound Gang song and a woman who would do "Me and Bobby McGee" and she killed every time. That being followed up with Mercedes Benz was a really enjoyable set of tracks, but I have a hard time listening to a full Janis Joplin in one sitting for some reason, even though I like her sound a lot.

Intense voice, and some good songwriting, but a bit grating to my ears.

Not bad 2.75

great voice some nice tunes

This was pretty good.

Really liked a couple of songs - We will not be lovers and The stolen girl

Mostly meh with three good songs.

Not my style.

Janis need some D..... Stat!

Not much to say about this except that I sort of just thought it was ok and it didn’t make that much of an impression. Fav songs: buried alive in the blues, my baby

Janis Joplin is obviously a really good and insanely talented singer, but something about this album just doesn’t click for me. It feels a little repetitive for whatever reason, and that gets a little grating as the album goes on. The band is super tight though. I feel bad not liking it as much as I should. Standout tracks: Move Over, Half Moon

Janis Joplin, more than anyone else, including Insane Clown Posse, is the artist who looks the most like all of her fans.

Familiar with this artist by name and I enjoyed the album’s energy and the singer’s unique voice. No real standouts otherwise.

I looked up her Wikipedia page and felt my jaw hit the floor when I read that she recorded this album at age 26. All the songs are enjoyable but I don't see myself running back to listen anytime soon. Feels like the album deserves a 3.5 or something similar, but the twangier and raspier tracks did pull it away from 4 stars. All in all, damn shame she died so young, I cannot imagine how incredible her music could have become.

Kind of sounds like my aunt with a southern accent? Use of growling technique all over is distracting, but goodness can that woman belt em out

Her vocals were incredibly unique and her talent was very apparent. It is a shame she was gone so young. The chemistry in her band is a reflection of her ability to bring energy and creativity into any space.

Love Janis. But this one doesn't quite do it for me. The comfortable slickness of this band doesn't work with her as well as the ragged edge of her previous colleagues, and often they seem more interested in displaying their chops than supporting the song. Which may be understandable, because some of the material is a little uninspired, and not really suited to her, leaning towards a sultriness that isn't her best side - I'd rather hear her howling above the storm. When the band get out of her way and she has something good to sing, like Bobby McGee, the results are great. But I'd rather hear those good bits on a compilation than sit through the rest again.

3.75 Rip

Janis! Bluesy JJ!

It was a fun album I was surprised by the amount of songs I knew

Liked this very much. Couple of well known hits but some good gems in there, both Bluesy and Rock & Roll.

I didn’t remember Janis sounded so country to me

The genre / music generally isn’t for me! But I really respect her talent and writing. Wish I liked it more tbh

Classic Janis Joplin. I liked it but didn't love it. Her voice is definitely powerful but I don't actually love how she sounds. Favorites: Move Over

Stunning voice, over pub blues

I’m in the tiny percentage of people who can’t stand Janis Joplin’s voice. It’s never impressed me, and more often than not it irritates me. The band on this album was exactly fine, nothing to write home about. My favorite on this one was Buried Alive In the Blues for obvious reasons. I’m giving it 3/5 because I’m positive there are albums on this list I’ll dislike more.

The album was deeper than I was expecting. I don’t necessarily love or hate Joplin as a singer on singles, but her tone with the quality of the old recording does grate after several tracks.

I liked every other song, but I honestly don’t get what the big deal was with Janis Joplin.

Like it 3/5

I was a little shocked to see that this was the only Janis Joplin album in this collection, but then was relieved to see that we'll get another dose of her with the earlier Big Brother and the Holding Band album. I'm not all that familiar with her work, aside from her distinctive vocal style, so it was nice to hear an album of hers that contained nearly all-new (to me) material. And fun to hear how well she and the Full Tilt Boogie Band meshed on the album--I imagine they were even better live. I particularly enjoyed "Move over", "Half moon", and her great version of "Me and Bobby McGee", and it's definitely moving to hear the instrumental "Buried alive with the blues", still waiting for Joplin's vocals to fill it out.

I didn’t get a chance to hear this. I’ll default give it three stars.

Undeniably unique in her delivery: the combination of energy, emotion, and tone was one of a kind. I had heard a few of her famous tracks before but never realized she was largely a blues singer. Certain tracks also evoked similarities to Jimi Hendrix, which I didn't expect but makes sense. Where it kind of falls apart for me is the lyrical content: pretty much every song is about chasing, lamenting, loving, or being mistreated by romantic partners, often men. I get that she wrote what she knew and blues is largely emotionally driven, so romance is a natural connection, but the motif gets a bit tired as a central focus. I'm also not the biggest blues fan, so that might factor in as well. Good historical exploration, clearly unmatched at what she did, but this will not be in my regular rotation.

Basically the same as Big Brother and the Holding Company for me. Some good blues/soul, I just can't do Joplin's voice. I will say I think she has a little more range on this one, so when she's not going high/screeching, it's pretty good. And I do like this more than Big Brother, but not enough to get it to four stars.

buen rock

I don't think I'd say that Janis Joplin had a good voice. It's decidedly not good. But it's so unique that it's absolutely amazing for the music she made. Her voice is so strong that it doesn't matter if the pitch is off a bit or if it's uneven. She forces you to listen to her and that's why it's great. I can certainly see the influence this album has had on basically every woman-fronted rock band since. This is a good album. It's not a perfect or even a great album. There are some songs on here that I wouldn't really listen to again on their own, but playing the album as a whole is the way to do it. 3.25/5

ehhh this had some highs and some lows to me. Favorite song: A Woman Left Lonely

She can obviously sing, and I quite liked the album. It did however get a little one note after a few songs, and I felt like every song tried to be intense for most of the album. The album is only 33 minutes, but I managed to get tired of the intensity, energy and her voice around halfway through. The last few songs blew some fresh air and it finished nicely. Solid, and I could see myself listening to it again, but much of the album felt samey. It really needed some softer songs in the middle so you get a break. Also I didn't feel like there was any stand out songs I would listen to otherwise.

What a voice!!

Great voice, the album not quite up to that level. A couple of tracks are really good but overall its pretty average fare, just leaves you wondering what might have been had she not overdosed so early in her career.

so Janis was an icon. Super raw and emotional and certainly one of the greats. But if I want to hear someone shouting at me in a raspy voice I'd just chat to my 5 year old at the end of the school holidays.

Very unique and compelling vocals.

Impressive voice, otherwise typical pysch/blues

Not terrible but nothing stood out, but nothing we bad 3.75

Points deducted for the Mercedes song being stuck in my head.
