Reviews (page 7 of 13)
I was excited to see this. I have never listened to it before. It was good. Needs more than one listen.
Incredible voice, and clearly at the top of her game here. I'll always prefer Kris Kristofferson's version of Me and Bobby McGee though. An album to put on in the background while having friends round for drinks.
First time listen - blinding- what a great collection of songs
A favourite when I was in my 20s and listening to hippy era music rather than what everyone else was listening to…
This reminds me too much of REDACTED. Still great
Great rasp silti. Ei epäilystä miks niin arvostettu albumi.
Janis Joplin, kaikkein röökiraijojen äiti... Mikä ilo tätä olikaan kuunnella, kiitos 1001albumsgenerator.com että muistutit mua janisin olemassaolosta!
The record has a great start, with ‘move over’ setting such a great bar, with her raspy but melodically resounding voice as well as the impressive guitar solos. Love the blend between rock and blues. I personally really enjoyed the album, though there was a minor repetition in the general ‘sound’ with each of the tracks
A solid classic. Such an awesome, unique voice
I feel naturally obliged to honor this, Janis Joplin and her voice, member of the 27 Club and all that and the band there playing their asses off, but honestly, by track six I'd had enough. Blues Rock. I've had enough Blues Rock. Hello, generator? That said, this album is mighty, and mightily fine, so I'll give it the Rightly Certified Classic That I Just Don't Give The Whole Lot of Shits About treatment: 4
She was just the coolest
Great voice.
I think I listened to this album 3 times before I finally rated. I just kept thinking about how much more Janis could have done if she was still here. There are a couple skips for me here but overall just such a great album!
Janis rules
chill vibes, nice switch-up from the 2000s+ vibes
First record from this list I got to listen to on my new speakers on my system. So actually sat and really critically listened. Enjoyed the band much more than I ever noticed before.
Fun album
Certainly a product of its time and great. -1 because I just don't care for the time.
-I wonder where she would be now if she didn't die of an overdose? Probably dead...but still could have had some more great, honest, music. a shame. Too damn young!
What a voice. What a passion.
This is a classic! If it also had Take Another it’d probably be a 5. Love her.
For some reason, the second half caused a great sadness in me. Good album, though.
Solid from start to finish. Damn good voice.
Okay, so I am generally sceptical to these larger than life rock stars and especially from this period (late 60s, early 70s). Usually, they were more a case of cult of personality with image being more important than their talent. But this is awesome! Janis Joplin was undeniably an image driven front woman, but she was also a brilliant singer. And the writing and playing on this is on a whole other level. It is virtuosic, energetic and eclectic in all the best possible ways. I just want to get of work, go home, and play the guitar now. That's what a good rock album should do.
Gorgeous, gorgeous voice.
Smooth as silk
Great pipes!
Great singer and artist. Maybe the album is a bit overrated as it was her last one and most polished of her solo and Big Brother work. Things were heading in a direction that would have been even better though
Good soulful album, really enjoyed me and Bobby McGee
The postumus album by the great Janis Joplin is probably her most well known and with highest sales. Its a blues rock and soul and her voice just break through every song, i think her most impressive performance is in Cry Baby. Buried Alive in the Blues is the most rock n roll track on the album, with organ parts like in her days with big brothers and its an instrumental wich is wierd for a Janis Joplin Solo album. The album have some great tracks like Move Over, Me And Bobby McGee, Mercedenz Benz, Half Moon The album is legendary, i dont think all the songs are great but none of them are bad, even with all the qualities of it, i don't find anything particular musically with some of thoses songs. But it is really a wonderfull reccord.
4.5 at least
Another great addition from Janis. Some of her best hits and hidden gems are on this record.
really great
This CD is awesome. Janis has a powerful, powerful voice and uses it on every song. It's also fast, fun and exciting. They're clearly enjoying themselves, as on "Mercedes Benz". But they still bring a ton of raw emotion to songs like "Cry, Cry, Baby". And they've got a nice sound overall, especially with the organ filling everything out.
4/5
Classic. There's so much authenticity and personality in her voice.
Really amazing soul. A little too stretched in places.
Very enjoyable and is almost flawless . Not much I could say to discredit the album but its not a full perfect album to me , though I rate it very highly.
Good. Not much else to say about this record. Favorite song: move over.
Wowee what a voice. I've heard of Janis Joplin but never listened to before. This lady can sing! Very enjoyable, listened twice.
Still not a fan of psych rock, but I’ll give extra points here for the amazing way Janis uses her voice. She was extremely talented.
Great voice, full of emotion at times.. Enjoyed this. didn't like the middle three songs as much as the others. but overall, a good listen
This was nicer than I expected. I think I like her more, the older I get. IMO not as good as Cheap Thrills. But she really made a big impact on American music.
Great voice and some songs are great
oooh hoo hoo yeah
I love her voice.
Grymt mycket känsla. Riktigt unik röst och bra instrumentalister. Precis vad jag förväntade mig. Coolt omslag.
Hadn’t heard this in probably 50+ years. Better than I thought. Obviously a great voice, and the backing band is quite good. Standard quirky stereo separation typical of the era (that’s not a bad thing, IMO). Weird that there’s an instrumental on the album.
It is a shame that Janis didn't live longer to create more music. She had an iconic voice that was unmistakable. She was broken inside from the start, and her music showed her pain. I think she was lost and didn't know how to find herself so she looked for ways to fill the void, and it ultimately killed her in the end. Even though her career was short, she has a lasting legacy on music. Great album!
Shut up and play the hits
Such an amazing voice
Exceptional album.
Enjoyed
Didn't expect country, but overall was nice. Mercedes Benz was a standout treat.
Although Janis was here for a good time and not a long time, I can still hear the pain in her voice and words. It resonates so much with me right now in life with the mental hardships I’m enduring. This is one of those records I didn’t know I needed until I listened to it - another testament to this 1001 albums project’s goal. Janis covers so many of the genres I grew up with - rock, soul, blues, even Motown (hear “Half Moon”) - yet I never really listened to her until now. RIP.
Great voice. Had never really listened.
Class
This is a nice little listen. A great album I will listen to again!! I really enjoyed my baby and me and Booby McGee, there are some great songs on this album. Mercedes Benz is a classic song and really important. Great and powerful lyrics. Favourite song: get it while you can. Least favourite: There is not a bad song on the album Album artwork: Cool cover and a cool lady.
I'll need to give this one some repeat listens to fully appreciate it. The sound definitely stands out in a way that I like.
Liked it ! Janis art will never let you down
Pretty good
On and off
Mercedes Benz!
Solid
sovereign
Classic album
Such a distinctive voice and performer. At the same time I cannot say I am her biggest fan. Despite that, this is actually a pretty good album where she shows some range while still showcasing hee blues talents. Also of note is the band backing her. I have no idea who they are but they back her brilliantly. Songs of note include "Me and Bobby McGee", which is truly one of the great vocal performances of all time and "Get it While You Can".
Meh quite solid 5/10
I’m not sure if her vocals are my favorite but they are certainly full of feeling and I can’t deny that I feel that. Her last album before she died of an overdose. First three tracks are pretty undeniable as well as the instrumental track which is the way it is because she died a few days prior and wasn’t able to record her vocals on it. Love the kristofferson cover
The goat
Janis was one of the first vocalists I ever loved. And I still love her dearly. She’s so genuinely passionate, vulnerable, and powerful…really, the only “bad” thing about this record is how sad it makes me to think that we lost her so soon. Practically every song is a highlight here, with the instrumental “Buried Alive in the Blues” perhaps being the only “weak” link. Fantastic record. 4.5/5
Good album Standout songs: Move Over A Woman Left Lonely Get it While you Can
you don't know what singing is until you've heard janis joplin
decent
Rock, Blues 1971 -> 4
Fine enough
A great album. Awesome hits and just the feeling of a gone too soon artist
Never actually listened to this album outside the singles and it’s great. I love the blues rock and the way she sings it.
Good Janis album
Solid throughout, distinct voice and great guitar. Good sense of humour
Never heard this full labum before (except from the singles that came from it). Really enjoyed the raw voice and "Burried Allive in the Blues"-track"
such a voice
Great listen. She has an amazing and unique sound. Exceptional range and passion. I was surprised that this was only her 2nd release, and post mortem at that. Left such a legacy and inspired so many. Tom Petty mentioned his song “The Waiting” was inspired by a quote from JJ- “I love being onstage and everything else is just waiting”.
I wasn’t expecting to like this as much as I did, but it was a very solid listen. The production while quite slick for the time still maintains a slight rough-around-the edges feel and only emphasizes just how great a singer Joplin was. Hard to imagine that this was just her 2nd studio album ever recorded.
Sadly a member of the 27 club, which sucks. What a talent, and nothing contrived about her style. It just doesn’t get much better than Janis singing about Bobby McGee, and the rest of the album is just as great.
Man she’s great and this whole album is a solid listen. This version of Me and Bobby McGee is so fantastic. I think Roger Miller and Kris Kristofferson heard that and were probably like “Ohhhh, yeah. That’s a lot better than what we did.”
What a voice. What a loss. This albums slaps, obvi. I didn’t know she passed away before it was finished. Cool that they left Buried Alive in the Blues on the album even though she never recorded vocals as a kind of moment of silence. Missing a little extra something to get it to 5* category, but still great. 4.25/5
Cry Baby // Me and Bobby McGee // Trust Me // Get It While You Can 3.5/5
Janis Joplin is so fucking good and Pearl is a brilliant album. She has a voice unlike pretty much anyone else in music history, she can do the lot and it would be enough for her to be the star of the show without even half-decent music behind her, but the music on this record is also stellar, songwriting is masterful, strong arrangements, quality guitar work, you bring in the pianos and organs and backing singers/choirs for emphasis at the back end of some songs to finish strong, it all works really well. But she's one of the greatest ever for a reason and she shows why on Cry Baby, A Woman Left Lonely, My Baby and Me and Bobby McGee in particular, though it feels unfair to leave out the rest of the songs (the a cappella Mercedes Benz obviously), her range, her styling, her full range of emotions from desperate to playful to seductive, it's all there. The only disappointment really was that Half Moon and Buried Alive In The Blues aren't as good as everything else on here, and it might just bring it down from a 5 into the highest of 4s, but damn if she didn't go too soon.
This is fab, she's got a phenomenal voice and the songwriting that goes with it is really really good too. A comfortable four, great pace and energy to it, didn't let up throughout (although a couple of changes of pace), and not a weak track on it. 4/5.
Knew the hits, need a bit more listening to get more of it but happy to do so
I thought the back half of this album was excellent.
Sonoridade me agrada demais.
Move Over Cry Baby A Woman Left Lonely Half Moon Me and Bobby McGee Mercedes Benz
A very solid album, not many negatives in my opinion. I wasn't alive back then but I associate this sound more so with the mid to late 60's so this album may be dated by a couple of years, but it is still a good album.
Love some Janis Joplin.
Jag är redo att bli blown away. Janis Joplin liksom. Det är bra. Klart värt att lyssna på flera gånger. Omslaget är ascoolt. Hennes röst är fantastisk. Buried Alive in Blues är bra. Hitarna likaså. Gillar blues och rock tydligen.
Well, yeah. Since I was a kid I have preferred Cheap Thrills, on the grounds that it’s more unhinged than this one. The little bit of studio professionalism hinders Joplin more than it helps, but the end product still absolutely goes, start to finish
This list seems to have lots of flawed masterpieces. If Janis had lived to complete this album her own way she might have produced something truly spectacular, or she might have ruined it. As it is it's a very good album.
It's very good, but I've little else to say about it, or any personal attachment. She's got a great voice, most of the songs are enjoyable and everything is well produced. I just don't love it for some reason, but would definitely recommend it to someone who might. 13/05/24
FANTASTIC
Excellent as always
Didn't think I'd like it but, Janis has such a strong voice and the almost multicolored instrumental was so layered and intricate it made me fall in love with almost every song.
This might be the only Southern rock album to grab my ear since I got into CCR a few years back. Her voice is phenomenal and the performances on here are lively on all fronts. Although the lyrics on some tracks didn't quite connect with me, some of the 1960s-1970s hippie sentiment bleeds through, which I liked. There is a slight decline in quality in the second half, but overall, this was fun, bluesy, and another that I will return to frequently.
I had heard much of this album before but never as a whole. Janis Joplin’s voice and delivery were incredibly unique. The natural grit applied to blues rock just works well. Unfortunately, we will never know how her career would have matured as this album was released posthumously.
Great album from start to finish. Me and Bobby Mcgee is obviously the well known track here with others like Mercedes Benz following suit. Far better writers have penned far better reviews of Joplin over the years, but I expect this is one I'll eventually come back to.
A voice for all time, gritty and powerful. The band sounds great too, the piano and guitar in particular. Highlights: Move Over, Me and Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz, Trust Me, Get It While You Can
Fantastic. Love this album.
Highlights: Cry Baby, Half Moon, Buried Alive In The Blues, Me and Bobby McGee, Trust Me. “I have to have the ‘umph.’ I’ve got to feel it, because if it’s not getting through to me, the audience sure as hell aren’t going to feel it either.” Janis Joplin ‘Soul blues’ is the best description for Joplin’s sound on Pearl. I was impressed by this album. Knew the hits, but was not anticipating to be stunned by the whole package. You can feel the longing, the passion, the raw emotions of the band AND Janis. They all go hard. Overall: 7/10
I liked it
Wow, what a solid album. That voice! Every song is good and that backing band is awesome. I would not normally listen to this, but I enjoyed the album.
Beaucoup d’énergie, une belle voix roque de femme libre et du bon rock all in all
Janis Joplin is an artist that I know is very influential from what I've heard other people say and from comments made in media, but before listening to this album, I couldn't have named one Janis Joplin song. I enjoyed learning about her style and life story as I was listening, and the music itself was very fun to listen to and full of emotion.
Awesome voice
man i'm sorry, i just don't really jive with this. growing up being forced to listen to these songs in the car will do wonders for not wanting to listen to this album at all. i'm not the hugest fan of janis' voice and i don't really get the appeal of this one. the music is fine, but nothing mindblowing. the production on this is so sterile, it's hard to get any energy from the recordings at all, even ending of the big track "me and bobby mcgee." I understand that she passed away during the recording of this album, so it may not be "finished" but it still gets heaped tons of praise on it anyways. i dunno. nothing remarkable here for me, very middle of the road. dare i toss around the "overrated" word?
I'll admit up front I've always been a little cool on Janis (opinions formed long ago for forgotten and likely specious reasoning) -- but I tried to listen to this 'fresh', and it was very solid. The songs in particular are top notch -- standouts for me were the soul cover "Cry Baby" and the Womack-penned "Trust Me".
Great stuff. Shame she died so young as it would be great to hear where else she would have gone. A classic in blues rock. 4.5/5
Way better than expected
Sing it janis!!
Fantastic! Great working music. Also Mercedes Benz is timeless.
One of the classics of Blues Rock. Highlight and most known song ist probably "Mercedes Benz".
Good, I enjoyed listening to this. I have not listen to much of Janis Joplin, I'm curious to hear some of her other albums.
Here we go! Classic as fuck here. Janis defines the 60’s with her intense vocals that she belts out with gusto. The realest blues come from the lived experience of pain and heartbreak, and this record defines it. There’s the tracks everyone knows, like the first track and Me and Bobby McGee, but A Woman Left Lonely is incredibly beautiful. The organ and walking bass lines are what gives this one some cool sounds and feel. But this is HER record, not just the singer of Big Brother’s solo album. Her life was kinda tragic and it sucks for sure. This came out after she died of an overdose. 27 Club member, her favorite drink was Southern Comfort. But you know she loved to play music and loves the blues, so her legacy is immense. Rippity pip Janis!
I got excited as soon as I saw this pop up. "Buried Alive in the Blues" is a great instrumental - upbeat and energetic. How has this not been used in a movie or show? The instruments are balanced well, production crisp. Her voice is something authentic and not forced IMO.
This has got to be among the most iconic voices of a generation and certainly one of the most iconic voices in the rock genre. It's almost like her raspy voice was handcrafted to be a rock singer. Loved the album, could listen to her sing all day. I understand that this is a solo album, but the only thing I would knock this for is that the back up band was a little meh for most of the album. I think I would have rated this higher if every song was as fun as Me and Bobby McGee where there is a good balance struck between the vocals and the band.
What a great voice, pure soul.
Her time was short but hell, she made the most of it with her music. Rest easy, Queen.
What a delightful album.
I’ve always loved Janis. I like this better than when she had Big Brother Holding Co. featured.
Joplin was pretty revolutionary as one of the first big female rock artists. Love how she combines classic rock and blues elements with her powerful voice.
Seriously. What a great voice. Janis Joplin has a clear vocal talent and she tailors the music to emphasise that as much as possible. It's so fun, energising, thumping, honking... really just makes you want to perpetually make the stank face. Shoutout to the percussion and horns for complementing Joplin's vocal really well. Unfortunately, there are a few obviously weaker tracks (alongside some really great ones), which knocks my rating down to a 4. I don't know how Me and Bobby McGee could possibly be the most popular song on the album, given how relatively uneventful and devoid of hooks it is. And soul-rock masterpieces like Half Moon are left in the (popularity) dust! Man, people have some questionable music taste. Key tracks: A Woman Left Lonely, Half Moon, Buried Alive In the Blues, Mercedez Benz
badass
yes
Really liked it, only knew the one song from that advert
I never really listened to Janis Joplin much before this. This is a great album, except for "Me and Bobbie McGee", where my dislike of country music trumps my liking for Joplin's voice. I wonder what the album would have been like had Joplin lived to properly complete it. And I wonder what her career would have been like.
Better than I expected!
Usually I don't care much about blues rock at all, but holy shit is this on a completely different level
Cry Baby is a classic! Also like Move Over and My Baby. I like Janis Joplin's style.
Amazing album! Janis has such a great rock voice. "Cry Baby" and "Bury Me Alive in Blues" are real standouts, but they're all good.
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background Very enjoyable
I think Janis Joplin is very cool - I know that's a milquetoast take but I think it has to be said. I don't know why I think so, I figure it's because she's in the 27-club which is unarguable a very cool-person club to be a part of (second only to being alive) As for this record, I enjoyed it. I didn't read way into the lyrics but it is clearly a journey. I have a lot of time for acapella efforts too.
Me lembrou a infância! Feliz por ver uma mulher por aqui. 4 estrelas pela nostalgia.
Love Janis' voice.
very nice and rich sound
Great singer, great songs.
Few can do it like Janis. Her music was getting better and better. Sad she passed away right before Pearl. She was a mess, but she might have evened out with a little more time.
Very soulful. She has an iconic voice.
I enjoyed this more than I was expecting. It has an uplifting gospel feel. I always thought Joplin was on the darker side of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. The organ sound almost steals the show. But it's the 50 B&H a day gravel voice that won me over. Walked it like she talked it.
Very good.
I played this while me and Jojah were cleaning the house. It was definitely good vibes for that, although I’m not sure I would seek it out on a regular basis. 7.5/10
Was pretty good, here voice got a bit annoying in some of the half yelling sections though 7/10
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz
Janis was a force of nature. Gone way too soon.
Never really listened to Janis Joplin, but I definitely should more
wouldn't usually be my thing but wow janis joplin really has a voice on her. like holy shit. 7/10 fav tracks: move over, cry baby
Listened to this while playing Set A Watch solo. I lost. I have never really listened to much Janis Joplin, but I'm questioning why that is the case. I had always thought of her as just yelly...but good lord, does she have a fantastic yell. I had Mercedes-Benz stuck in my head for the rest of the day. Super solid.
Outstanding!!
Wailing and soulful. Easy to see where so many other artists got some of their inspiration for the cadence of their vocals.
Really enjoyed this album. Had never listened to it before but her voice really puts soul into the songs.
Joplin time was always just a sloppy drugged out singer. I actaully like this record. Spotify only had the deluxe version and I found myself listening to all the demon and love tracks as well. Her banter in studio was annoying, she was sloppy love but that sloppiness and that rasp are part of the charm. I would have loved to see her perform live.
Love Janis Joplin, but wasn't in to listening to a lot of her music that day.
Despite being on the tail-end of her career, this is still powerhouse Janis from a vocal standpoint. The backing band tracks are hit-or-miss for me, with the middle portion being the weakest, but this is still a strong posthumous (always a bit concerning) offering. The fanfare around this release must have been wild. Beyond the music, this album is so representative of the fragility of life and how the ripples of small-decisions can echo through history. If her studio sessions had been delayed even a week, this album, and Mercedes Benz especially, would've never existed. Wild to think of all the albums that we've lost and never known because the coin landing the other way a certain time.
I will admit a soft spot for Janis. Her voice always evokes an image and this album has all the songs you know and a few I grew to love.
Amazing wailing raspy voice. You can really heart the emotion and the store behind every word she sings. I can see how a loud persona like this has set up succsss for other women to follow.
I used to not care for Janis's tone, but I've grown to like it. This is a solid album.
Full of grooves. Really good stuff. The baby song was very good. Me and Bobby brown also very good.
7.5/10 Liked this one quite a bit Could have been boring bluesy rock (again) but was raised up by the gospel influence, her amazing vocals, and absolutely wonderful Hammond organ Every song could be used as the soundtrack to a montage in a very good film Best: A Woman Left Lonely
Just a great voice. Some nice surprises, as I'd never listened to the whole album before.
awesome
Of course an awesome voice. What really surprised me were the musical arrangements. Timing changes, orchestrated solos. Very fun.
79/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Simple, heartfelt blues. This was such a nice change of pace from the Britpop and electronica bullshit through which I've had to suffer. Didn't crack 5 stars because there are some weaker tracks, but the good tracks are absolutely fantastic.
The instrumentals pair perfectly with Joplin’s powerful voice. There are lots of subtle genre infusions on this album, and I did not expect that. The authenticity and raw power make this a fun listen.
Janis Joplin has one of those polarizing vocal styles, but I really dig it. Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee, and Mercedes Benz get most of the love from this album, and they are all good, but there is a lot of quality top to bottom on this album. Even the tracks I liked a bit less like Half Moon weren't bad.
What a voice. Great album by a legend.
3.5
Very raw and beautiful. Feels like a cozy album more than an every day listen.
So good! So special.
Definitely enjoyed this more than the first 2 days. (Judas Priest and Abba) Janis is 100% more my speed, plus she sings about things I can sympathize much more with. Even in 2024, you can still feel that emotion in her voice. There's a reason she's an icon, and this album is a prime example of that.
Janis was very good. Sad we lost her so soon. Great blues influenced album. Very '60s vibe.
A good listen
Good album, but it took me down the rabbithole to see the live performance that put her on the map, and at that point I understood the hype!
I don't remember much of Janis Joplin, but I remember her voice being a little grating. It still can be for that real primal scream, but man I enjoy it a lot more than I remember. The songs ebb and flow and seem to eschew a traditional sound. While there are a lot of 60s sounds in here, it also feels like its own category. The sound is peppy, distinct, bouncy, but has a sense of lament to it also. Favorite Songs: Move Over, Half Moon, Least Favorites: Mercedes Benz,
Great album, a lot of songs that I haven’t heard in a long time, added to my library
Powerful vocals. I got dem kozmic blues is a good album too.
Loved her gritty brave voice!
I was surprised by how much I liked this. The previous Joplin album didn’t grab me at all, but I liked this one quite a bit. Not sure why but it was lots of fun and of course those powerhouse vocals.
You know. This is our second Janis showing in this list and I liked it a lot.
I know this album well, I listened to it a lot as a teenager. I particularly enjoyed Mercedes Benz, and her little laugh always got me at the end. "Move Over" was also a banger. "Cry Baby" is another classic, that I forgot was on this album, that's outstanding songs to lead the album. "Buried alive in the Blues" is pretty funky but sounds a bit dated. "Me and Bobby McGee" is as good as I remember it. When the full band kicks in it has a really nice feel. "Get it while you can" is a great closer to the album. I'd give it 4/5.
Liked this, a flashback to My hippie days.
Great stuff!
girl can sang, shame about the toto wolff shilling in there
Very good album
Move Over. Cry Baby. My Baby. Me & Bobby McGee. Get it While You Can. Mostly solid all around - nice rocky folk album. Would think it's all about the singer, but the backing band brings a lot.
Janis good.
Such a soulful, stellar album! The musicality is on point. And while the band is amazing, from the soaring hammond, the groovy drums and great guitarwork. It's Janis that steals the show, she was such an amazing, gifted singer. The rasp and warmth in her voice is something special, pure rock & roll. Standouts: Move Over, A Woman Left Lonely, Half Moon, My Baby, Me And Bobby McGee, Trust Me, Get It While You Can 9 out of 10
Move Over - Great Guitar Solo Overall, great Band
Music is better if it was instrumental but still really enjoyable.
I really like her intensity and rawness in her voice. Instruments are good too.
My hopes were so high: the start was really good but it completely fell apart towards the end. I was digging this more than anything else and then it whipped out some of the most random and ehhhh country ass music possible. Still good and nothing can take away from that.
Great album, nice mix of hits and other great songs.
What a voice.
LEMME START OUT BY SAYING THAT I FREAKING LOVE JANIS JOPLIN'S VOICE. My reasoning: Because there's a raspy power inn it that makes me stop and feel the words that she's saying. THEY STAY A LITTLE LONGER IN THE BRAIN. Having that in mind, this album was a wonderful experience especially hearing about someone like Joplin for the many years and only kind remembering "Cry Baby". And she doesn't disappoint AT ALL. Giving all the rock fans a run for their money. 4 and a half out of 5 stars. IT'S ALMOST PERFECT TO ME.
From Move Over to Mercedes Benz very very solid album. Creative songwriting and Janis’ powerful voice. At times Janis can be overpowering. I prefer Big Brother in the Holding Company, but this still solid
Such a unique voice. This album had fewer of the songs I knew than the Big Brother and the Holding Company album but it represented an increased maturity of her as a songwriter. This is perhaps a glimpse into what her future sound could have been, had she lived longer. Very sad to have lost this talent at such a young age.
Less of a "live" feeling than her previous output, but damn Joplin's voice is still breathtaking on Pearl. Pleasantly surprised by the excellent 'Me and Bobby McGee' cover in the middle of all the blues.
Joplin was a vocal power house not to be messed with. The Full Tilt Boogie Band provides her with less of a live feel on Pearl - and it really suits her studio output. Too late this would be released under the saddest circumstances possible.
I just let em... Slip awayy
What jazz should be. Jazz vocal vibes.
Pretty pretty pretty pretty good
Move Over Cry Baby, this album was a Pearl! Trust Me!
Enjoyed listening
Talk about nostalgia... my dad had this on vinyl and I'd put it on when I was a kid, stare at the pic of the weird looking chick on the couch and wonder why she looked like that. "Mercedes Benz" was kind of like our family's theme song. My dad used to sing that all the time and when retired and got an Mercedes motorhome he named it Janice and had a huge "Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz" emblazoned across the bumper.
I thought I was going to hate this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Very good album
Enjoyed it but wasn’t gripped
Very good!
Classic sound of the '70's One of a kind talent
Soul
Her voice is so emotive and powerful, she really elevates the production to another level
I never thought of myself as a Janis Joplin fan. After listening to this album, I am a changed man. I did not dislike her music, I just hadn’t given it a chance. So soulful, haunting, and beautiful. Very pleased with this album. 4/5
Ahh Janis, such an amazingly soulful voice. At 27 she died so young and this album was released 3 months after her death. What an amazing singer songwriter ! Awesome!
Has some classic songs.
Iconic album by an iconic woman.
Djöfull var hún flottur sálarblúsari miðað við það að vera hvít. Skín í gegn ást hennar á Big Mama Thornton. Það er alvöru passion í þessu hjá henni og platan flæðir fáránlega vel í gegn. Tók nokkrar hlustanir og þetta virkar bara ótrúlega vel. Þetta er sérstaklega skemmtilegt þar sem ég er ný búinn að hlusta á tveggja tíma podcast m.a. um Janis hjá "A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs" (Þáttur 169). Magnað að hugsa hvað við misstum mikið af mússík út af 27 klúbbnum. Að ímynda sér hvað JJ hefði gert hefði hún ekki dottið svona rækilega í það. Upphafslagið Move Over finnst mér skemmtilegast, enda eina lagið sem hún á ein á plötunni.
Cry baby t.d. mjög gott lag og auðvitað Me and Bobby M. Solid fjarki.
Good album, breeze to get through, great voice 4
Whata voice !!
7/10
What a voice
understandably a classic album. Janis Joplin was a unique talent. or distinct raspy quality draws in the listener and her emoting is up there with the best. bluesy rock at its finest.
Wow, what a voice. Incredibly soulful and powerful.
First time listening really, good
Very cool, happy to finally listen to this
A few iconic hits, unmistakable voice.
great songs. great vocals. gone at 27 :(
The instrumentation is a little bit all over the place in quality but that's not what people are here for - we're here for Joplin and her fantastic blues singing. Really wish she was able to make more than she did. 7/10
Cry Baby is beautiful. Really solid rock album. The grit in Janis' voice seals in the sound.
Great album. Me and Bobby McGee is not even the best song on this one. 4 stars
cry baby best song
What a legend. One of the strongest and most flavourful raw voices of that era, certainly for women. Her softer moments are soulful, too. Lyrics are great, written for women, which is a big plus perhaps especially in the genre. Her image is iconic, progressive and important. Truthful and bold. The band and musicality is ‘fine’, which is probably what stops it from being a five star album. Strong 8 though!
She really could sing.
Great music from a queen of rock. Several cuts are listenable. Others raise chills and memories.
i’m predicting 5 stars from Dad :)
Excellent album but ultimately depressing due to the whole "what could have been". Janis and her band lay down a half hour of power, soul, longing, desire... Raw and uncut, flesh and blood. One of the quintessential american albums.
Really nice and kinda unique imo
Blues/soul achtig, goede mix, goede pianopartijen
Nice and short. The over the top wailing was annoying in places but I enjoyed the funkier ones
Enjoyed the album, I had never listened to Janis Joplin before, liked "Mercedes Benz".
Some bops. But also some that we’re too raw for me.
Anytime music Solid record through and through, made me nostalgic
This album was really fun, it went by so quickly I was surprised when it was over and wished there were a couple more songs. Janis Joplin has a great style.
Interesting and enjoyable but not amazing. I like the guitar, piano, and organ. I wish Joplin's voice didn't have as much of a distortion effect in the recording quality, it's hard to tell what she's singing. Drumming sounds too quiet compared to everything else. Today I'm just not really feeling this style of music for whatever reason. It's not a 5 but I think I'd feel bad giving it a 3 based on only today's reaction.
She was a firework of an artist. The grittiest voice (if that's even a word) from a female artist I've ever heard! Iconic
Joplin’s singing, 5 stars. The keyboardists that had wayyyy to much input, not so much.
Though bits feel more like filler, the great tracks are really great.
The album feels of its time but still super listenable with only a few tracks that dragged. Her voice is simply amazing. Tragic to have lost someone so talented so young - how might her music have evolved if she'd lived?
What a great talent that will always remain as a what if? Very cool!
cool
Absolutely stunning voice. I was surprised by how many songs I already knew!
I was never a big fan of hers, but there’s a lot of catchy songs. Her voice is more than just a scratchy yell
If Otis Redding was female...then it was Janis Joplin
By turns slinky, yearning, fun, and raw. Excellent, and heartbreaking wondering where she might have gone from here.
Very solid album. The vast majority of the tracks are in between very good and absolute fire. A few duds, but overall, a very listenable album.
bom
It's cool
Good "discovery", didn't know all the songs. A real banger
not typically my kind of music but a true classic
Good stuff, never paid much attention to her apart from her singles but really enjoyed it.
This album is great, what a voice
Damn soulful, a really great album. Standouts are 'Cry Baby' and 'Mercedes Benz' (Women do be feelin' tho.)
Good album. This maybe controversial but i hate the Mercedes benz song
Not sure if I'm into the genre enough to love the whole album, but I certainly like many elements of this project. Specifically, the grit in her voice and the piano/organ.
Such a distinct voice. Great album.
I had never heard this album. Don't know how long I will revisit it, but it was an excellent, and unfortunately the last, display of Joplin's incredible voice. Her voice is great, but it feels like it hurts her throat to sing. "Cry Baby" is a jam and there is a lot of other blues-rock here and feels like a must-listen album.
Janis’s voice is like no other.
Love her voice. Little bit repetitive song structure but overall a very fun listen.
Wouldn't have listened to a lot of Janis Joplin, I'd always heard from other peops that she was overrated for her time... but for me... I was pleasantly surprised as i queued the album up and found I really enjoyed this bluesy rock album, first 2 tracks were a good lead into the album. Janis vocals are strong and powerful, albeit with that annoying trait of sounding strangulated at times, but the backing group carried each track through effortlessly with decent vibes. Worst track for me was her trademark Mercedes Benz, meh, not for me, but it was only a short track.
Glad I listened to this album
Truly one of the most heartfelt and beautiful female singers who ever lived. The raspiness of her voice might generally be uncharacteristic of a woman, but it works so well. And it also perfectly fits the fuzz and buzz of the blues music she so gracefully performs over. But that isn't to take away from the band. Because I think they do a fantastic job at creating blues music that is designed to get stuck in your head for the rest of the day. It's hard to not love a song like "Me and Bobby McGee". This album is short and sweet, and works great as background music for a party or some family event, because no one can really complain when this is on. There isn't really any bad part of this album. I mean, it's not the greatest album ever made. There is probably better blues music I haven't heard yet. But it's vibe and simplicity is endearing, and this album just feels like a warm hug from your nice hippie aunt. Really, Janis was the antithesis of hippies. And sadly, she is just another beautiful artist and person taken away from us too soon.
A 70's version of Amy Winehouse. A great voice, immense talent that had only just started to be explored and died so young. I knew a lot more of her work than I thought I did and enjoy it, it's a shame she didn't get to make more music
Janis has a deeply soulful voice that sends her life and career out with a beautiful spirit, one filled with freedom.
Loved it. My first time listening straight through a Janis Joplin album and definitely won’t be the last. 4.5/5
4.5
Some great soul and blues. What an amazing raw and unique voice too. Some of the slower songs passed me by a bit, unfortunately, but this was still very good. It's very sad that she joined the 27 club, I would have loved to know how her career would have went if she was still around. Heroin sucks. Favourite: Move Over
Top
Me likey Except for the one song abt the Mercedes
Despite my beef with JJ leaving BB&HC this unarguably has some quality tunes on ot
Voice is iconic, but small doses are necessary or it grates on my neuro divergent nerves.
1st. Leuke gitaar. Knappe vrouw 7/10 2nd. Super bekend love it. Mooi rustig begin 9/10 3th.
Really liked this - "My Baby" was great!
