Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Solid. Also scared if I rate this low that Kunetz will hurt me.
Buried Alive In the Blues was probably my favorite song. The other stuff was okay for me.
Die Stimme ist ihr Markenzeichung. Manchmal zu viel Geschrei. Meisten schöne Bassläufe und positive Stimmung.
I expected more. Years of hype. The hits/known songs are beasts, but a bit of filler too. Researching the album it becomes apparent this was incomplete due to Janis’ death and I think that’s where some of its legacy comes from.
The singing here is much more polished compared to the wildness of her BB&HC era, but still a full throated, impassioned and characteristically hoarse vocal performance that steals the show. The songs are all pretty standard California psych blues numbers, apart from the stand out cowboy-country of Me and Bobby McGee, the best one of all.
Very cool, bluesy rock.
It was good. Kind of forgot about this album now writing the review for it
Trust me is FIIREEEE. most of it tho just isn't for me. i respect her and totally see the vibe but i cant connect with it.
Great music.
This one's hit or miss for me. I lioe the backing band. This is the only recording the Full Tilt Boogie Band did with Janis before her death and that's disappointing because they are great! Tracks like Move Over rock, and I love the timing and energy they bring. But when things slow down she loses me. The vocals seem too performative at these times; almost disingenuous. I feel like Janis and the band are at their best tearing through upbeat bangers, and there's just not enough here.
A very quick album. I feel like it was too short to be able to successfully critical of her. I liked it and recognized some songs, but even after listening again I just felt it was difficult to judge completely.
A lotta screaming and not really getting anywhere. It's pretty powerful and fun though.
If nothing else, Janis has a very powerful and unique voice. There is a lot of raw passion and soul poured into every song, but I'm not sure if the raspy, gritty vocals are actually enjoyable. I don't think the instrumentation is particularly interesting, but it's purposely leaving a lot of room for Janis to shine.
6/.510
I was kind of dreading this album and expected patchwork skirt style white lady bl00z, but this hit more like a mix between Aretha and Dolly. I can't imagine this is a record I come back to with much frequency or ever buy, but I had a much better time than i expected with it.
first album and artist that ive never heard of on here but i recognized mercedes benz (not a fan of that song). i guess the albums cool but its not my style. me and bobby mcgee, trust me, and get it while you can are my favorite tracks. maybe in a while ill enjoy it more but for now its getting a very light 6/10
it was good but like not amazing
I've always struggled to get into Janis and this listen was no different. I can't really find much to criticise but it also just doesn't grab me at all. Whilst she's objectively a fantastic vocalist I just don't seem to enjoy listening to her sing. 2.9/5
A classic.
Very talented and objectively good, but not really something I see myself going back to a ton. Just not quite my vibe
Nice record. Don't know why I'm not a fan of her, this is good stuff. Maybe too much caterwauling?
Glam as fuck! Pretty good album for sure; a strong 3. Her singing voice reminds me of Robert Plant’s, oddly. I like that she said furthermore on the first track. Also, she says “daddy” A LOT on this.
I’ve always loved Me & Bobby McGee, and even though Janis didn’t write it herself she definitely snapped on it. There were some other bangers on this album too like cry baby.
3,50
Classic album. Solid music. Starred 2.
3.75
Not bad
Surprisingly, I had heard many of these songs. Quick and dirty.
Move Over - Not sure why this reminds me of Deep Purple Cry Baby - This one is just good and everyone knows it. That's why it's in commercials. A Woman Left Lonely - This song would be 17% better without that annoying organ tone. Half Moon - Good chorus and cool solo. Fun tone. Bassist is copying everyone else's licks. It's cool. Buried Alive in the Blues - Zany car chase montage music. My Baby - Swells are pretty swell. This one is actually pretty good. Lot 'o parts. Me and Bobby McGee - It's good. Everybody knows that. Mercedes Benz - I have a Mercedes and a color TV but don't know about a night on the town. Trust Me - This one is good. Bass line is awesome. The guitar reminds me of Elvis Costello. Makes me want to go listen to Elvis Costello. I won't though. Get It While You Can - Little guitar stabs make everything better. Cool chord progression. Bassist and piano player are still good even at the end of the album. Drummer finally showed up. Top 3: 1. Cry Baby 2. Me and Bobby McGee 3. Trust Me
It was OK; not feeling particularly compelled to listen to it again, though.
Okay, I gotta admit. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I thought I knew what I was getting into, but this was a pretty solid blues album overall. It did just make me want to listen to Bonnie Raitt, but I get the hype a bit more than I think I did for the first 37 years of my life. Very solid.
I find Janis Joplin the musical equivalent of an annoying toy with Duracell batteries that only has one setting - full power. It can become somewhat ovebearing. Sure, a great voice and tragic tale to give her songs credibility. But none of the subtlty of her peers like Karen Carpenter and Carole King. Its well played polpular blues. I hope she got a Mercedes Benz for the advert.
More rockin' than I thought it would be. Sometimes her raspy voice gets a little grating on me. But there's some jams on here.
It's aight. I was working so I didn't pay too much attention to it. -6/10
“Oh she’s just shouting”-my mom. Like yeah I agree but it sounds good. I liked this for driving, don’t think I’d like it otherwise. Oklahoma is so gorgeous could make anything(most things) sound a little bit good, I think this had a baseline good so was p decent. rating based on how I think I’d feel while not driving. Also, ALL CAUGHT UP!!!
6/10 - While her voice is a little gravely for my liking it is fantastic. I can very easily see how this made the list. Mercedez Benz was a funny song to listen to since she was just asking for different things from god.
Pretty good 6.5/10
It was ok. Not really my thing but can appreciate the raw talent and the “importance” of this record!
És un estil que m'agrada i l'àlbum està súper ben muntat, però em cansa massa ràpid. No em veig escoltant-ho freqüentment, només de manera esporàdica i mai massa cançons seguides. Expected Lorenzo Rating: 3
This is surprisingly good. It makes sense that she died at 27.
Much emotions fav song a woman left lonely
I enjoyed it more then expected. The last 2 or 3 songs got a little "screechy" but all in all, a worthwhile listen.
Wide ranging and unique, an impressive album!
Meh
Never really listened to Janis before. Pretty good and I understand the impact she has across the industry. Certainly a legend
Favourite song - Trust me
B- Move Over 4 Cry Baby 4 A Woman Left Lonely 3 Half Moon 3 Buried Alive In The Blues 3 My Baby 3 Me & Bobby McGee 3 Mercedes Benz 3 Trust Me 4 Get It While You Can 3 It's one of the few albums on this generator that I own on vinyl. Janis Joplin is great.
my only experience with Janis Joplin is the greatest hits album so hearing a lot of non-hits wasnt great BUT it was still alright! She's got a distinctive voice especially in a genre with very little female representation
Not bad but the first half all sounded the same. Me and Bobby McGee is a banger though!
I didn't know Janis Joplin could sing like that! I had her in my head as a folkie. Like the vibe and the wurlitzers. However, if I ever wanted to listen to this again, I'd just put on Aretha Franklin.
One of two good songs on this album. Probably would not buy it but then I was never a really big JJ fan.
Lost too soon.
Janis' voice is so unique, but can be a little overwhelming. The songs are okay, there really is only one good song on the album. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again
Janis rocks and has some great songs here. She also wails and I enjoyed this one a lot. Really on the fence between 3/4 as I don’t really feel myself coming back to it on a regular basis. Probably the highest 3 I’ve given.
iconic Bobby McGee and Mercedes Benz overall I don´t like the voice
3.5 stars. Jazzy sort of rock and roll album. Pleasant enough. I didn't love Joplin's voice at the start, but it grew on me. Realized "Cry Baby" is in that perfume commercial with Natalie Portman
The first two songs had me dancing around while listening. It evoked happier memories for me and had wanting more. I can not give it five stars because buried alive did not make me feel any emotions, just creating noise
nostalgic of listening to this w my mom
let’s get this out of the way… janis joplin does not have a good singing voice. at times, in my opinion, it sounds like running fingernails on a chalkboard. having said that, she has something that you can’t learn, and that is intensity and emotion. she gave 100% on every song on this album, not holding anything back. that is what, in my opinion, made her successful. particularly in the blues rock style in which she sang. so while she may not have the greatest singing voice, you could feel the pain and longing in every song.
Never really got into Janis because of that voice. This is ok despite that.
I like her voice but the album is just ok.
Better than I expected
It was good, it was her hits, very distinctive style, that is not my most favorite to continue to listen to
Better than I expected from a screeching hippy addict.
More enjoyable than expected
Not my cup of tea, but tolerable
Somehow never listened to Janis despite knowing about her forever, so this my was first time hearing her. Got such a powerful voice that carried the whole album. Would return to it, isn't blowing me away but it's a good easy listen.
Not bad but not great. Had a variety and was the style of that era.
Favs: Cry-Baby Mercedes Benz Get it While You Can Passionate. She really goes for it. Funkier than I expected. Bobby McGee is the famous one, but surprisingly different from the rest of the album.
Voice is incredible Lyrically, it’s not quite the one. Feels like she pining after someone song after song. Instruments are such a vibe 3/5
I appreciate the quality of this but it's not really my style
Wild
The studio stuff here is gorgeous. I can't stand Cheap Thrills. But most of this album offers a tremendous dose of precisely what the Big Brother album lacks - musicality. I'm still not a huge fan of Janis' screeching. But here it is used as a part of her range, rather than the point of directing a microphone in her direction. The production (again on the studio tracks) is golden. I also love this particular moment of music where gospel, blues, country, and the transition of Stax-style Soul into Funk were thrown together seemingly indiscriminately. I always think of Leon Russell's bands as the best versions of this style. But the Full Tilt Boogie Band's performances on Pearl stand up to the best of those bands'. The live tracks are a let down.
Ach ja, die gehört natürlich mit dazu. Drei Sterne.
2.5
A lot bluesier than expected. Solid album if not for me.
Fine. This feels like another artist I’ve been overexposed to (which I might have also said for a different album with Janis). The big songs on here are pretty good, and I wouldn’t change to station if they started playing on the radio.
Distinctive voice. Musically varied, but strong blues and rock influences.
Move Over - 7/10 Cry Baby - 7.5/10 A Woman Left Lonely - 7.5/10 Half Moon - 7/10 Buried Alive in The Blues - 7.5/10 My Baby - 7/10 Me and Bobby McGee - 7/10 Mercedes Benz - 6/10 Trust Me - 7/10 Get It While You Can - 7.5/10 TOTAL - 64/100
Much more varied than I expected.
What an album to go out on, Joplin's vocals are unmatched to this day and their sheer power (coupled with genuine delivery and performance) really carry this LP to a sum much greater than its parts. I will say that outside a few choice lyrics I didn't carry much of this one through the day with me, but in the moment it was an incredible listen.
Great voice, sad story
Ihan viihdyttävä setti joka palveli myös Janisin tuotantoon vähemmän perehtynyttä kuulijaa.
Great voice, but not my thing
3/5. She most certainly has a powerful voice and while a bit too shrill for my ears at times, I was pleasantly surprised at how “rock n roll” the album was compared to how I presumed it would sound.
Great iconic voice, ok songwriting
I get her cultural importance, but her voice just doesn't work on me. Here's some cultural weight points.
The voice is great, the songs are okay. Still a legend.
This was just ok. Wasn’t super into it, but it wasn’t bad either. One of the most average albums I’ve heard so far. 6/10 Top 3: 1. A Woman Left Lonely 2. Get It While You Can 3. Mercedes Benz
It's a good album. I never got all of the hubbub about her voice. Some really good songs and some filler. 3/5
is this really good or is it just port mortem?
There's some good jams in here but I'm not massively keen overall. I know people love her voice, but for me it's just way too bombastic. 2.5 rounded up.
Nice pipes
3/5 - solid album, I love her voice
Good album, enjoyed the music and Janis can definitely sing. Mid to high 3.
Good
Surprisingly enjoyable.
i grew up loving the fuck outta Mama Cass, and always felt compelled that i should love janis joplin too. I think I will always just think she seems cool, of course all tragic, but her music is just ok for me.
Didn’t like it as much as the first Janis Joplin album but there were definitely some great moments. Really liked buried alive in blues
I enjoyed this, even though familiar the songs are still raw and powerful.
Disappointing considering how much I enjoyed Janis Joplins over album with big brother and the holding company. But this album was just mediocore sixties rock.
Meh
Amazing voice and really interesting album, not one I've listened to before. I think I could get into her music with a bit more listening time. Fave Track: Move over
Janet Jackson
Wasn't really in the mood for this album today. The voice of the singer seemed quite obnoxious and everything just too loud. I'm not totally giving up on this album though. Might give a shot sometime else, but I'm generally not such a big fan of such female low loud cigaretty kind of singing voices. Not really for me atm. So far a 6/10
I appreciate that I listened to and now know about this album. Although i definitely heard OHHH LORD WON'T YOU BUY MEE A MERCEDES BENZ before. But It's not really something I'd listen to on the regular:).
I could listen to Joplin listen to just about anything and enjoy it, I figure.
I liked this more than I thought I would. Expedited Joplin’s voice to turn into nails on a chalkboard but it wasn’t the case. 3.5/5
pretty dope, 3.5 or higher but below 4.
Very middle of the road
listened on airplane. surprised i dont really know any JJ songs that I can think of, but glad to listen to it. 3.4/5. listened 2x + 1 full "legacy 2cd version"
I’ve really never understood the hype of Janis Joplin. Even though this is better than her more aggressive stuff and isn’t terrible on its own, I just don’t see the staying power she’s had. Her voice definitely packs emotion and the songs are well put together tracks that borrow from quite a few genres but it isn’t *that* good.
great voice :)
I’m not a fan of her voice although in limited quantities with the right song, it works. Some of these songs would be great with another singer. Overall, I really like a lot of the music, especially that instrumental song half way through.
raspy
What a voice. Music wasn't my cup of tea.. But I favourited two songs: Half Moon and the acapella “Mercedes Benz”. Her voice is even more gritty than I remembered! Pretty good but not my fave overall
Impressions: First time listening to Janis Joplin. Liked the vibe just not quite a fan of her voice. Favorite tracks: Move On, Rating: 3/5
Not a genre of music that particularly speaks to me, but Joplin clearly had a phenomenal voice. The standout of the album for me was definitely Me and Bobby McGee, which is much more folky than the rest and therefore much more to my taste.
Unique, raspy voice that she uses hard in this classic rock
The vibe was good but I don't think I could stand the vocal belting for much longer
I somehow get the feeling, that Janis Joplin thought very high of her singing. It's certainly not bad, but I don't consider it supreme.
great blues and great rock some moments her voice felt a bit annoying but overall i really liked it
3.5
Could have possibly went to a 4. The highs on this are very high but a lot is just really solid. Either way, it's a pretty good record.
Broke my heart. Learned a lot about janis. Unique voice, didnt really enjoy the music tho.
Classic Vissi ekki að hun ætti mercedes benz lagið
repetitive and exhausting at times...
It's fine.
Although I love and respect Janis Joplin as a performer, her albums, and this one in particular, have always been too much for me. Her powerful voice combined with so much loud jamming is a lot.
The voice is undeniable, and probably came from white trash space. I struggle with country rock of that era, for me it’s not really enough of either usually. Biker drama!
If any classic rock would suit me, Janis Joplin would be it. Album does not disappoint, one of the best examples in the genre. That brings it up to 3 stars.
Good, sounds very janis joplin-ee
Great voice and singing style, not a lot of diversity among songs. 6.5/10 Favorite song : Mercedes Benz
Bluesy Janis beats Folksy Janis
Nailing the wailing.
started out as grit
Very romantic country blues music. Some of it is not so bad. So-so. Vocals are way too crackly and painful to listen to for my ears at times.
The kind of album you listen to and think “absolute classic” but you know you’ll never voluntarily listen to it again. “Get it while you can” closing the album got me though.
Nice old school.
Old style rock singing, like if meatloaf was older and a woman?
3-4
Really good musicianship. I don't think I would listen to it again except for "Mercedes-Benz" which is on another level. Good, not essential. There are better late 60's, early 70's blues rock / psych rock albums out there.
It's ok, the band is tight, Joplin's voice is iconic, but overall, just feel like it's alright
Not my kind of music but I can understand why people like(d) it.
Hyvää eteläissoundista rockia. Vähän skynyrdimaista
The music has trouble standing up to the more wonderful accretive parts. Thus, Pearl is more assertive as history than sound, except... That voice is plenty assertive.
idk how I'd never actually ended up listening to a Janis Joplin album but it was pretty much as expected. Nice blues arrangements with some hearty screeching, always sick but wish there was a bit more musical versatility
Liked it well enough, no particular song stuck out as a favourite though.
great album, like a break up album from the free love music of the 60s
El álbum más importante y probablemente el que la transformó en una leyenda del rock. Con performances increíbles de The Full Tilt Boogie Band y la asombrosa voz de Joplin, este album es un imprescindible del rock.
Pretty good. Definitely leans much more into straight soul than her earlier work and her backup band is very tight. However, I can’t help but feel like this is just a little bland.
good but unremarkable
Don't mind Janis Joplin, but the album as a whole is not the best.
There are surely some witty bits...
Genres: Blues rock, soul blues, blue-eyed soul, funk rock Formed: (Solo) 1969 Run time: 10 songs, 33 min, 59 sec Her second and final solo album. Before going solo Janis Joplin was with the group Big Brother and the Holding Company (releasing two albums). Janis Joplin had an unmistakable voice that was made to sing the Blues. Unfortunately (aged 27) her life was cut short, due to a heroin OD. This album was released posthumously. Spotify: Least popular song: >2.1M Most popular song: almost 236M plays. “Move Over” is about the end of a relationship. He wants to end it, but won’t let her move on. She just wants a stable relationship. “Cry Baby” is about a former lover returning after the end of his relationship with another. She welcomes him back and claims she’ll love him more than anyone else can. She tells him to “Cry Baby” because she will console him. “A Woman Left Lonely” is about feeling lonely in a one sided relationship. “Half Moon” is about how love makes you feel complete even when apart. “Buried Alive in the Blues” - instrumental. “My Baby” is another love song and how love makes you feel safe and secure even on the coldest of nights. “Me And Bobby McGee” is a cover of a song written by Kris Kristofferson (and Fred Foster) and originally performed by Roger Miller. The song is about an adventure / journey taken by the narrator and the titular Bobby McGee. Reminiscing about the trip (which itself could be a metaphor for life), the protagonist wished they could swap tomorrow for yesterday, so they can once again be with Bobby McGee who died. “Mercedes Benz” is a satirical look at consumerism in the US. “Trust Me” is a song about how love grows stronger over time. The trust is the singer asking her lover to be patient to reap the rewards. “Get It While You Can” is about seizing life and not letting love pass you by. You don’t know when it will be over! Overall the album is about love and seizing life while you can. Listen Again?: Yes (and I will try her other music with Big Brother…) My Rating: ***
It was all right, a good start for her. But, alas, it was the golden age of rock & roll and of course there was heroin involved. She od'd and died at 27, as was the custom at those times. I am sad that we don't know what kind of stuff she would've done at her later years.
A high 3. Great song writing and musicians to back up an incredible voice. First time I’ve ever listened to her and just read up on her story too. Another huge slice of education served up for me! Surprised how much of this I knew without knowing I knew it. Will get more listens I’m sure.
3.5
Some great hits Bobby McGee obviously but too many samey sounding blues and soul tracks without any song attached
The final feat from a talent rarer than pearls and more raw than tartare.
Avg
Very blues oriented, can see why she was massive in the late 60s early 70s.
Visst, en hel del klassiker men jag har lite svårt för hennes gap. Får en trea bara för att jag är snäll.
Ça crie sacrément (allitération)
Great voice and some nice bluesy jams on this one. 6/10
Impressive how in control Janis can be while sounding like she's out of control vocally. Me and Bobby McGee, is an all time great song. Kris Kristofferson sings his song well, but Janis owns it.
A posthumous album from such a unique voice in music, she seemed like a cool woman.
Leading off with Move Over. Pretty straight-forward blues rock jam with some nice guitar work throughout. I like the way the guitar mirrors and underlines the vocals. A lot of this has fallen into the background. Not hating anything so far, but not much really standing out. Me and Bobby McGee caught my attention; I've never heard her version, but a I've heard the Dead do the song many times. Her's is more spread out and soulful. I dig the organ accompaniment. Mercedes Benz is an incredibly vulnerable acapella track. While I don't exactly love Joplin's voice, I think the husk of it with the clap accompaniment works well here. This was a fine album, but it in no way captured my attention... Maybe if I were to hear it in '71 I would feel differently, but here in 2024, this is a low-mid 3 for me.
A solid blues-rock record with fantastic vocals, but nothing too standout from a songwriting point of view
beautiful voice, songs are bit outdated (don't kill me for saying that), 3 stars
Musically I like it very much, but I get a little annoyed by Janis Joplins voice and overdramatic way of singing.
Always tought I hated Janis Joplin. Enjoyed it a lot more than i thought. One album is enough though.
Nice
Better than some of the other stuff I've listen for this, 3 but leaning towards 4. The organ was 70s-y (positive). I don't remember the exact tracks I liked, but the one with "freedom is having nothing less to lose" and "lord won't you..." stood out.
I enjoyed this, I feel like I can appreciate her music more now that I've studied her for uni
fine album, not exactly my taste, but nonetheless solid.
good album
Good. I can't remember if I was going to give this a 3 or a 4...
Not quite my style of music, a little too slow and doesn't really resonate with me thematically to keep my attention. But I can feel the energy and talent put in.
It was decent. All the songs sounded similar. 3.0
But I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday.
Qué intérprete de la cdsm. Gracias, Janis.
She's another name I've always heard, and I've heard some songs on the radio and whatnot, but I've never really sat down and actively listened to. This album's pretty good though. She's got some pipes.
Pretty decent
A fine album... I sometimes feel she pushes her voice too far but hey. Production fine and some enjoyable songs. Really like Bobby McGee.
Litt masete
3.5
Af en toe cool, maar niet helemaal mijn ding.
I liked it for sure, her voice is really unique and incredible, and the composition of the songs really adds to the whole vibe of it. Feels very musical-y in a sense to my uninformed ear, or a more intense version of the female singer-songwriter pop albums coming out at the time such as Tapestry. There are a few stand out songs to me-Cry baby/me and bobby mcgee specifically, but the songs despite their power did seem to be a bit same-y after a while? Might've just been from a first listen. Definitely will be revisiting, but I did enjoy it. Didn't blow me away or anything, but appreciate the listen and a good way to kick it off.
Not my type of music
3.6 - A singular and soulful voice especially adept at wailing pitiably about unrequited love. She abuses her voice to achieve a uniquely gritty sound but it’s often too shrieky for my taste. Some tuneful hits on here nonetheless and the backing band sounds tight.
Decent but not incredible. I think blues/soul always sounds pretty nice but there’s certainly other artists who I’d take over Janis. 5/10
Pretty good, but nothing that really pulled me.
Hit me like a rock opera, but I don't think it's stuck for me.
Chiil
Önskar de hade vari country hela väg3n igenom
Not bad, cool instrumental parts, I thought her voice would grow on me. it did not.
Alright
3.4/5
I don’t mind it but a whole album of janis joplin can get a bit too much 3/5
Intro to Janice was a beat up Cheap Thrills vinyl I played on a Brother turntable/radio/8-track 20 years past its prime. I'm glad it went down that way, but I'm also glad to listen to the Legacy version of Pearl now with high quality sound. A classic for more than one reason.
its good. probably never going to revisit this again but its really not bad at all
Yea it was ok
That was a really good blues album to listen to. Never listened to a Janis album before. Solid 3. T3B 1. Me and Bobby McGee 2. Trust Me 3. Get It While You Can
Powergul!
Dead adjacent psychedelic folk rock
Nice album with some good songs
Amazing singer was songwriting is just okay
Meh
Janis had a powerful voice. I won't argue that. Maybe I find the songs average outside of Janis' singing or maybe I have heard to many buskers and talent show contestants commit murder that it has broken my ears.
An absolutely amazing voice that is sadly restricted by some pretty generic songs from the era. Certainly not bad music, but it's hard to really get into music that if anything sounds like something from the late fifties. It's a shame, because there are some musical hints of greatness and definitely would've evolved had there been time to do so.
Un album de Janis Joplin ordinaire sur fond de clopes, de trajets en poids lourd et de torse poilu.
Ok janis t'es sympa mais ta voix de fumeuse de roulées on a vite fait le tour. Un 3 en guise d'avertissement.
Janis probably had some good pussy back in her prime. I'm talking sloppy blowjobs before OnlyFans made them popular. Seems like the type of chick who would get drunk and start swinging though. Either way, she was a nice piece of ass by any measure... God rest her soul. Also the album was chill.
2.5 - okay. Ran to it.
It was aight
3 stars
Ms. Joplin just couldn’t live long enough to see her second album released. Talk about a rise and crash! Well, what about this one? A lot of convincing covers and a couple originals, including the silly a cappella ditty, “Mercedes Benz”. I actually think she’s got the best “Me and Bobby McGee” out there, too. What haunts me about this album is that one of the tracks is an instrumental because Janis died before she could record the vocals. So they just kept it as-is, a testament to her untimely death.
Listened Before? N Smooth, soulful, and at times rambling. This is a pretty good record. It's a shame she got so heavily into drugs and passed away so early or she could have really honed herself into an amazing overall performer. I enjoyed this one, but the big hit is a cover, and it shows. It's head and shoulders above all the rest. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Me and Bobby McGee
I see why Janis Joplin is highly regarded as a performer. There is a lot of raw humanity in these vocals. However, the 70s blues rock sound is very boring to me.
I have never been a huge fan of Joplin, but I tried to go into this album with an open mind. I liked it more than I expected to but still don't really care for her vocal style, which I know is the draw for a lot of people.
First song caught me off guard (positively), after that it's still alright
Hlustaði seint og illa á þessa. Hún fær 3 stjörnur, bara fyrir nafnið á listamanninum.
Rarely in this musical adventure have I liked an album more and more the longer I listened to it. At first I thought she was doing a poor, melded imitation of incredible black female artists who came before her. I overcame that feeling with the blues and country sounds were mixed in and it started to feel different. I really enjoyed the album.
Let me start by saying my local classic rock station absolutely killed the majority of "classic" songs of a lot of bands, by playing the ad nauseum. I was convinced as a younger kid that Janis Joplin only had 2 songs, Me and Bobby McGee and Mercedes Benz. Well, this album surprised me. Still can't stand the 2 songs I mentioned, but I did enjoy many of the other songs. I used to say her voice annoyed me, but after listening to more of her work, I take that statement back. Her voice is what makes this album work. I also enjoyed the heavy dose of piano. I really enjoyed this album. Some of my favs include, Move Over, Cry Baby, My Baby, Trust me and Get it while you can. cringed when I saw this album, but happy I listened. I could see me throwing on some Joplin, in the right scenario, but I would skip 2 songs for sure. 3.5 for me. Call this a "surprise" album for me
3.5 It’s hard to be a music junkie and not know of Janis Joplin. She’s often cited as being one of the most important and influential figures in music and is famously part of the 27 club, leaving many to wonder what could have been. I guess I’d never actually (knowingly) heard a Janis Joplin song because this is way more rocking than I thought it would be. As usual I figured it would be the slow folksy side of the 60s but to my surprise it’s way closer to the rock n roll blues side of the 60s. Musically I’m reminded so much of Led Zeppelin. Despite showing its age a little and ultimately being nothing I’ve never heard before, I really enjoyed this. It’s well done classic rock and roll and I would probably buy on vinyl if I find it cheap enough.
Good album. I had never really listened to anything but the hits and Me and Bobby McGee never really did it for me. This was pretty good.
Mooi hoor
I think this one was good in small doses, struggled to enjoy it as a whole
Fine. Some good funk. Probably not as groovy as big brother, although musicianship is better. This leaves it feeling a bit TOO polished at times. Strong heroin-cracking vocals. Is throwaway track Mercedes Benz the most popular (not best) from this album? Possibly her worst album (not counting 1st big brother, cause that is...something). Still good.
Tiene "Baby" y "Mercedes Benz" que ya suben el nivel, el resto se deja escuchar. Imprescindible entiendo que es peor tampoco obra maestra. 3 estrellas.
I thought this was a bit...meh on first listen. Might give it another go tomorrow. Her voice was fantastic but I'm not mad about how she used it at times, some of the screeching was a bit too intense. Me and Bobby McGee is a fantastic song though!
Solid
Favoritt Me and Bobby McGee Rating 4️⃣/6️⃣
like it
For me, Joplin was a name of a troubled artist that was an unfortunate member of the 27 Club. Two songs I had previously been exposed to were Mercedes Benz and Cry Baby appear on this album. But damn, what a voice! Big show tunes with a great band. Move Over brings bluesy, high energy. A Woman Left Lonely shows a mellow vulnerability. Half Moon the swinging funk. This is really good Highlights: Move Over, Cry Baby, Half Moon
Great distinctive voice. A rawness that soothes
Dunno which day this was tbh? Bears Den were fantastic then weird vibes then better with the papusas
Good album! Enjoyed the late 60s rock feel with some funk mixed in a few tracks. Joplin has a great voice and I’m a fan of her slightly raspy sound First posthumously released album on the 1001 list received so far Favorite songs: - Move Over - Buried Alive in the Blues - Me and Bobby McGee
Groovy, original vocals.
Potentiale, men lidt for overgearet. Move Over et meget god men ikke umiddelbart såååå meget mere at hente. Fed stemme, men overdriver lidt nogle gange
Not my thing.
Best Song: Cry Baby. A nice midpoint between rock and an almost gospel quality. Worst Song: Get it While You Can. A bit too sleepy of a gospel track. Overall: Janis Joplin fits into that category of artist that I'd heard about far more than I'd actually heard their music. I can understand the hype, as she's got such a powerful voice (which she pushes to the limit in nearly every song). Still, the songs begin to blur together somewhat, favouring more formulaic tracks, rather than letting Joplin rip loose and be weird.
I like the concept of janis joplin more than her actual music
With Janis' passing prior to the album's release, it felt as though the continuing descent of the Sixties Aquarian Dream had revised its apogee (Jimi had passed not long before her). Which is a shame because, with Pearl, Janis sounded ready to break through and plant herself throughly into the mainstream (if she wasn't already). We would never have a chance to live out what she would have done or would have been like had she continued to live on but this is a pretty good representation of what could have been. Favorites: Move Over, Cry Baby, A Woman Left Lonely, Buried Alive in the Blues, Me & Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz, Get It While You Can.
Great voice, great band, great songs
This was a really exciting inclusion. I spent half my time blown away, half my time lamenting JJs early exit and half my time wanting more than was there. Now that is a lot of halves.
Was fine. I liked this more than the pre-Janis band album we listened to though. 3.25/5
Janis’ voice still grates too hard for me, but I like this better than her other album we covered. I think her band here is tighter and she has stronger songs. “Me and Bobby McGee” is an all-timer. It’s a solid album, but I just have little use for her talents. C
3.7
Pretty good! She has a great voice
Well well - this was unexpectedly fun. Enjoyed it.
Cry Baby es un temón. El resto se deja escuchar al menos.
Was good
Like an American high school massacre
I don't much like her voice. Over-hyped in my view.
It was fine
Whoah. Hard to say much about this. It's true that every song is like an emotional rollercoaster and you've got to be in the mood for the ride. Her passion, energy and voice are legendary but it really feels dated. Not sure why.
Sata kertaa kuunneltu rupee jo vähän tökkii. Paikoitellen hauska. 3/5
Kova solisti ja muutenkin toimivaa musaa. Vahva 3/5.
Not my fave
Some powerful songs sung with emotion. Sounds quite dated now but worth a listen at least once a year.
Prrrrrrrrima plaatje van Janis!
Tof om een keer te horen. Mooie rauwe stem.
Echt behoorlijk ok! Zelfs met een corona-hoofd kon ik dit goed hebben.
I really go back and forth on this one. There are a few songs on here that work for me - Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz. And she's got the personality that's pretty unmistakable. She's sort of the other side of the coin with Joe Cocker, maybe? I like all the energy. Some of the songs are indelible. But it's also not something I really reach for. There's something that seems a little put on or something that I don't love.
Easy loving man
Last Joplin unfinished work.
never realised she had such a good voice.
thought i was going to like her more, was expecting something rockier. sad story reading about her life
2/15/22
Hit or miss. Mercedes Benz was a real throwaway track.
This is the Janis that I came to know and appreciate, not as sloppy as her earlier music. Some people prefer her more unrestrained singing but this album shows how Janis grew into an artist that had much more control over her voice (making it much more impactful), style, and output, much more refined. It was still not my favorite music then, or now, but it pulled me in enough to enjoy her work on Pearl. The band is great and production is good. Most of the songs are solid ("Move Over", "Cry Baby") with favorites being "Me & Bobby McGee", "Trust Me" and I can't resist "Mercedes Benz" having hear it so frequently on radio during that time. 3 Stars
Joplin's soulful vocal performance on Pearl is undeniable. The songwriting is pretty average early 70s blues, but Joplin and her band elevate it to something that can really connect you to how she's feeling. Also, there aren't any extended tracks on this album, so Pearl never overstays its welcome. Fav Tracks: A Woman Left Lonely, Trust Me and Cry Baby
Wow, this is so much better than Cheap Thrills! It's like night and day for me. Still not my favourite style, but there's much more to appreciate here. The band is super tight, the production is really crisp, the songwriting is really solid, and there's nary an extended blues jam in sight. And how about that runtime? A lean 33 minutes with a lot of variety in store. Pearl feels like a really well-crafted document of Joplin's appeal. It's so much more mature, unique, and self-assured. Given this was her last album, it really makes me wonder where she would have gone from here. Favourite tracks: Trust Me, Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee
Enjoyed
3, I originally heard this as a live cover and it was butchered, so the recorded album was better than expected
Ok
Amazing voice but it all sounds a bit samey to me.
This is the first album I've gotten so far by a woman. I really like how interesting Janice's voice is. Favorite: Me and Bobby McGee
For some reason I thought I'd hate this but it was pretty good
Sie singt gut. Mercedes Benz kann ich nicht hören
Muy lento, no me gusto.
Pretty nice blues. Not as good as her debut. 6/10
2 or 3 greats songs. The rest were fine
cry baby, buried alive in the blues, my baby, mercedes benz- her voice is striking. powerful. raw asf, i love it!
Good! but again, I think the 70s aren't quite my thing despite appreciating the quality.
Lies sich gut beim aufsetzen des Bullet Journals hören. Harmonisch/Organisch? 3,5/5
Favorites: Cry Baby, Move Over Pretty standard stuff in here. Janis Joplin was and still remains an big figure of the 1970s. Most of the songs in this album convey that very well. Lots of 70s sound. I don't know, there's really not much to say. Nothing really stood out to me, but I didn't dislike it.
It was okay.
5/10. Bobby McGee is iconic, the rest is largely forgettable.
One of the voices of the 60's - instantly recognisable and some of the best known songs of the era. Not sure how well it's aged, but certainly worthy of inclusion.
It was a good album. I still really dislike the Mercedes Benz song.
She has an great voice, some of the tracks are a bit shit though, starts strong and falls off from there
*Mercedes-Benz *Cry Baby
