Really liked this - "My Baby" was great!
such amazingly strong vocal performances that anything less than a 4/5 would be criminal. move over, cry baby, and me and bobby mcgee deserve all the praise they get, they're great. also mercedes benz was funny.
Janis Joplin is a woman. Despite this shortcoming, she has made an incredibly electrifying album full of classics. Only complaint was a lack of range. Some songs sounded similar sometimes to some other songs, sincerely. 4/5
Great!
Great voice, great backing band
I knew that losing Janis was a tragedy, but I didn't realize how much of a tragedy that was. She defies a lot of the things that I've noticed I tend not to enjoy during my experiences with the copious amounts of 70s rock here. Piano-focused rock music? Typical on other records, she goes off the handle here. Playing fast and loose with vocals, to the point of losing her voice? Grating for other artists (Hello, Niel Young), but I can hear the sparks fly out of her mouth with each line and it leaves me wanting so, so much more. Why'd she have to go so early, man... An explosive 4/5.
I always knew this was a classic, and I do know a few of the songs. I have heard the album before, probably several times, but until now, i never really thought it was great. But it is. Standouts: Me and Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz, Cry Baby, Move Over, Half Moon, Buried Alive in the Blues, My Baby. 4/5
An indomitable voice fronting a great band delivering on some no-nonsense blues and soul based rock music. “Cry Baby” does the most to showcase Joplin’s voice and the power and passion she sang with.
To contrast the music here with Big Brother and the Holding Company’s Cheap Thrills, the arrangements are tight. And frankly, the musicians are better. I still love Janis’s voice too. Perfectly imperfect is the right characterization. My favorite song on this album by a mile is Mercedes Benz. Being a cappella, it showcases her voice well. The “that’s it” plus the giggle at the end always get me. She sings about wanting a Mercedes because her friends all drive Porsches…yet Janis herself had a Porsche. Unfortunately, this was the last song she ever recorded (in one take no less). At least she saved her best for last. This album leaves me appreciating Janis more than before and also wishing she had the opportunity to make more great music with the Full Tilt Boogie Band backing her.
So cool
The album is ok, but Janis got pipes pipes. Wouldve been a winehouse or a franklin :( dont do drugs kids
Janis is a great singer and the band are also tight! Worth your time if you are into vocal performance.
This was excellent! I hadn’t heard any Janis Joplin and wasn’t sure what to expect but really impressed!
Nothing new to add beyond what you've all said haha, Janis's voice is incredible and it's a shame she never got the chance to make her masterwork she was clearly capable of. I can see someone fiddling with AI and old demos like Paul McCartney's done recently but for now we'll have to settle for Pearl as the closest to her potential we're likely to hear. It was so close to clicking!
Solid album. Mercedes Benz is such a dry, clever song. Get it While You Can was my favorite.
I see this frequently referred to as a masterpiece. If so, it is a flawed one. I would argue that Janis never got the chance to record a masterpiece. Clearly cut short in her prime, all we have are four flawed recordings. All that said, she deserves to be on this list and this is the best at capturing special her combination of rock, blues and country.
Well I asked for “any woman” and the generator went above that request. Janis Joplin is an exceptional presence throughout this album. While it’s the big hit, “Me And Bobby McGee” stuck out for me sonically during my listen as it did not sound like the rest of the tracks given how gently she sang the beginning, and it makes me wonder what could have been later in her career should there have been one. Her voice did become a bit grating throughout the album, and without the hit cover she might have sounded more like a one trick pony, so I was stuck between a 4 and a 5.
A nice album from someone who sounds like they've been smoking a little bit too much. It's a shame she died so early because it would have been cool to see more from her. Score: 80 Art: 70
Soul+Rock+Blues+Gros piano+Bonne guit+Janis Joplin = wowwww!
first listen timeless voice
Loved it, nearly 5 stars
I think this is a pretty great album, really enjoyed listening to it
Makes me feel good
Between the voice and the music, they don't do stuff like this anymore. And that's very sad.
It's hard to overstate Janis Joplin's importance to music and the rock and roll scene. What a powerhouse of a vocalist and someone who was taken too early from us. The album really captures a lot of her uniqueness and her voice.
I was very, very surprised by this album. Showed me that Janis Joplin wasn’t all screaming and shambling.
So, oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz? RIP
Cry Baby is such a good fucking song. Me & Bobby McGee is the classic and a song I can listen to at almost any point in time. Great tunes with a great backing band. RIP Janis
Never listened to her before. It was really good. Get it while you can was great.
Sounds EXACTLY like I'd expect a rock album from 1971 to sound. Not my jam, but its alright I suppose.
It was pretty good, though a bit repatative.
Immediately hypnotising, the bluesy crooning of Joplin's voice seizes you in a chokehold and refuses to relent. There's a rampant intimacy about this performance, as though I'm listening to it live in a small, local, hole-in-the-wall bar. The backing band does a good job lending to this, tastefully garnishing the passionate belting of Joplin 's voice - though there are certainly moments where it shines, such as in Buried Alive in the Blues. Absolutely phenomenal piece of work.
It was really good! I love Janis Joplin’s voice. me and Bobby McGee is the star of the album. Wish it was a little bit longer. 8.5/10
KILLER pipes. Never so much as dipped a toe in the Joplin pool but boy I had a good time with this one. So much attitude and power conveyed in that voice, well constructed songs, a tight 35 min listen - what's not to like. Really loved the subtle mixing of styles to keep things feeling fresh while still of a piece. Four and a half. Fave track: Move Over
Such an impassioned performance from Joplin in a concise and engaging selection of tracks. Was a fun listen and had a lot of soul. A light four for this one. Fave track: Cry Baby
Listens: 3 Enjoyed: yes Very high 4 stars. She has such power in her voice and just doesn't miss
Might listen to again
What a voice, gone way too soon.
Riktigt duktig och energisk tjej.
Man, Janis just belts thise songs with zero effort.
So this is the good Janis Joplin album.
Pearl indeed
She was so good. Just nails every song.
I found this album to be a lot better than "Cheap Thrills". The album seemed more focused, the band was tighter. "Mercedes Benz" & "Bobby McGee" I have heard a billion times before, but I don't remember her voice cracking so much on the first song. I guess she really needed to break out from the band and have her own career. Good stuff.
In comparison to Cheap Thrills, this album is more consistent; I guess a little production value goes a long way. The backing band provides some good boogie too, without going over the top (Move Over is a solid example). But Joplin's vocals are still centre stage and ferocious. Cry Baby is a great, great wailer; it feels like a 10-minute song with all her energy and changes in delivery. Me and Bobby McGee is one of those rare great remakes. It shows you a more restrained Joplin is still a dynamo. Wouldn't have minded an amped up recording of Mercedez Benz (feels like it should be recorded live) but I appreciate the tongue in cheek lyrics. Get it While You Can was a nice closer; a little more variety to the vocals but still great energy from her and the band. Half Moon and My Baby are pretty solid too, just not quite as good as the others. But they remind you of Joplin's female blues inspirations - she does them justice. Too bad Buried Alive in the Blues is just instrumental - feels a bit naked on this album, despite some cool (if not overly The Band-esque) sounds. Very solid album.
After listening to the Big Brother and the Holding Company’s album Cheap Thrills, I didn’t expect to like this album. Well, I was dead wrong. This album really impressed me. I didn’t realize that Janis died during these sessions, and that the instrumental track on here was supposed to have vocals but she hadn’t gotten to recording them yet. I could only imagine that she would only have grown as singer had she been able to overcome her demons.
Incredible voice and great album
Move Over is such a great starter, an early 70s blues-rock classic. It’s my favourite Janis Joplin song – and she actually wrote it! The other song she wrote, Mercedes Benz, is also catchy. The rest of the LP consists of covers that provide lots of opportunity to unleash her raw, bluesy voice. To me, the covers make Janis sound ready-for-Vegas. I miss the varied, though inconsistent song-writing of Big Brother et al. I’ll round up, because she is such an incredible singer.
Some proper Rock'n'roll right here.
Classic Janis, had never heard the album in its entirety but familiar with many of the songs.
Good album, her voice is outstanding. Was just a little turned off by the fact that this album came out after she died. Not sure why, too bad I looked up info on the album
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. It's supposed to be Janis Joplin's most polished album, which helps.
Wonderfully powerful blues voice. Good blues record. Rightly her most celebrated album.
Beautiful, brilliant.
What a blues album, I enjoyed quite a bit although I’m not sure I’m sold on the vocals (I love you Janis don’t haunt me). 3.75
Wow what an ultimate last hurrah from Joplin!! I love Me and Bobby McGee and some tracks I haven't heard before on here. Janis Joplin what an idol!! Pure power and character - it takes so much to be able to sing in this style which is extremely impressive to me because I could never haha! Amazing
What a soul powerhouse! Loved listening to this.
Had never sat down and listened to Janis. This album smokes front to back. So much soul
A singular talent and tortured soul. This was her best band and album. Interesting to hear the stories of how this came together. Very solid collection of songs that she carries with her distinctive voice. I’m sure like others that went too fast that we missed out on some amazing music from her passing. Will come back to this one.
Great listen from front to back. Janis was just a bad ass woman with a powerful blues voice. She really stands front and center on the album. Will definitely listen to this one again and again. 4.5/5 for me.
70’er rock, fed vokal, politisk, psykedelisk
Schönes Album einer Legende.
No strong feelings for this one. I don’t think this was the best use of Janis’s undeniable talent.
this was quite solid! janis of course has an iconic voice, but i found the instrumentation to be a bit lacking in parts. a lot of legendary songs, though.
Good, but not for me
Love this Gravelly. Beautiful. Just awesome
She sounds like she has had a rough life filled with cigarettes but I dig it. Me and Bobby McGee is a banger. 4,5
This was a good album. 7/10
First impression: it’s within the decade of music I love (the 70s). It’s a woman! Wow. I hope this is good. Second impression: what a nice beat! She’s good! Love her raspy voice. Third impression: Like the guitar. Oh yeah! Wow. Overall impression: I like it! Listened to this in Annika’s room while we were playing her conversation game called “table topics”, during the pre-party. Turns out it had just had some small talk, surface questions. Annika skipped most of questions. I listened and enjoyed this album meanwhile we played Annika's game.
1'st listen Love her voice! some of the runs shes doing are a bit too unpredictable and go on for a bit too long for me to find enjoyable.. turns out they're not runs their lyricas haha but the song i mostly felt overwhelmed by was woman left lonely buried alive in the blues sounds like a mariocart song in the best way. Get while you can made me cry, her vocals are incredible emotionally, reminds me of the more passionate florence and the machine songs but turned up 120% 2'nd listen This is completly diffrent for somereason the second listen. knowing what to expect helps and im really enjoying it
I’ve historically not been a Janis Joplin fan. In the past, I’ve found her voice offputting. Something about this attempt was different though. The raw character of her voice felt much more honest and sincere than it has in the past. Really enjoyed this listen through. Favorite track - Crybaby Least favorite track - Mercedes Benz
Muy bien
Joplin's delivery here sometimes seems on a ragged edge of falling apart completely, seeming to prefigure her imminent untimely demise. Then again her voice will be strong and clear like the young woman she is, and it feels like she could have had half a century of singing in front of her, with better luck and some intensive rehab. A shame either way.
Instant classic, great tunes
Ooooh Janis is good! Not all the songs work for me, but love the blues and her voice hitting hard.
Joplin's unique voice really shines out. She sounds great despite the vocal imperfections.
what a star, shame she died
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Move over, Cry baby, Mercedes benz
Holy crap, what a performer. Certified legend status. It's a damn shame she died so young. I can only imagine how unbelievable she would have become given more time.
Hard to believe that Janis never got to hear how great this album is, or how much people loved it…
What timing! I literally just started to listen to this yesterday. I laughed at the Mercedes Benz song. Classic Me and Bobby McGee. My favorites upon first listen are Trust Me, Get It While You Can, Half Moon, And A Lonely Woman. I did not get to the bonus materials today.
Seems a short album, lots of classics. Good introduction to HER IMO.
Not bad at all. Kind of reminded me of Robert plant at moments.
Janis is instant nostalgia. Her tone is unparalleled. What a voice. What a soul. What a loss. I loved every song. My favourites were Cry Baby and Mercedes Benz. But Trust Me really struck a chord, too. God I loved this one.
I liked it, the vocals were very impressive although lyrically some songs didn't hit, especially Mercedes benz, 3.5 stars
An essential album with some of her classic songs. So much has been said about the all-too short, tragic life of Janis Joplin, but it's the music that sings loudly, as she is one of the most important female artists of her time. Her voice was amazing and her personality comes through even on her studio recordings. Such a shame she couldn't share her gift beyond 27.
Janis Joplin has some great vocals, and the backing instruments are great.
really enjoyed New genre for me
A great showcase for her vocal range and energy and you can see why she has been so highly regarded as a singer. A couple of standout tracks, and even the filler is pretty good.
First time I've listened to Janis. I loved her voice. The Famous rendition if me and Bobby McGee is on here.
Janis Joplin got such a unique voice, incredible
Solid album, Janis Joplin’s voice is absolutely INSANE, Me and Bobby McGee was great, overall good time
I wonder how long she could have held up that voice with that singing style, had she not been taken so early.
Ai että olipa hyvä. Vimmaa, soulia.
Great voice, good album
Janis, obviously, is the difference here. She had complete mastery over her voice, technical and emotional, and she knew it. The claim is hay she was plagued with self-doubt for much of her short life. You wouldn’t know it to hear her sing. Somehow, she made it sound like her life depended upon it *and* that she had no more fucks to give.
OK, I hate Mercedes Benz - there I said it. But what a fantastic voice she had. A Woman Left Lonely is the best song here.
clássicos
Really enjoyable album from an absolute legend. Iconic voice.
Oh yes thank you Janis
fantastic album. I now realise how familiar I am with many of these tracks, without ever really having gone out of my way to listen to Janis Joplin. What is particularly impressive is the diversity of the music - blues yes, but also soul, gospel, rock, pop. Janis Joplin's voice is up to the challenge of adapting to these different styles - she is far more than just a belter of blues songs. Loses one star for Mercedes Benz, which I could quite happily never, ever hear again
What a voice!
Like Adele but better hahahah
Among all the late 60s bands and singers I listened (or found my interest in) to Janis Joplin the least. I think that it stems from the fact that Janis is not as famous nowadays as, for example, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, or even Carlos Santana (looking at Woodstock '69 of course). Well, in few words that might be a mistake. I have listened to Pearl and although I didn't really like the style of the music, being too 'bluesy' and not interesting, I can't deny that Janis Joplin had a beautiful and mesmerizing voice. She could have sing "Baby Shark" and make it a powerful anthem of hippies - freedom and love. The album inspired me to look into her history more, and although it's not so inspiring (more like tragic), her live recordings are even better. This might be the only time, where I am going to rate the album solely on the basis of great vocal, with music being just a distant afterthough. I will definitely listen to this album and any other recordings of Joplin, looks like I was really missing a lot.
What a voice
Never was a Joplin fan. I can appreciate the talent and the legendary voice but I could never get into it. I'm very picky about 70s rock but will not hold that against her.
Move over, Cry baby, Mercedes Benz
jackie jormp-jomp
Still learning to appreciate Joplin, but a great album
Amazing voice to put a spin on almost anything. Bobby MCgee being the best of the best
Really enjoyed this one
Divino
Cry and Bobby macgee and Mercedes Benz I mean, there is a reason this is classic. Not my preferred music, but superb artistry.
Electric voice. Great stuff.
It was really good!
There's few voices as recognisable, or as quick to induce a spot of melancholy for what was lost. Especially in this week when we've lost a few iconic female singers. Some good solid blues with some raucousness.
Love a bit of JJ.
The final four songs alone make this a classic. Hell, what she does with Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" is enough to earn a place in history. Do we overrate Janis because she was one of the original members of the 27 Club? I don't know, man. Few songs have the magic "Me and Bobby McGee" does. Few singers could record an accapella song, title it "Mercedes Benz" and compel their record label to release it as a single. It's hard to determine where Janis Joplin's career would have gone if she didn't rely on the needle so much. This woman wasn't designed to live long - she was living too hard for that to be even a remote possibility. But if I had to endure the bullying she did from the likes of future Dallas Cowboy coach Jimmy Johnson for most of her youth, I'd probably drown myself in a bottle of Southern Comfort and shoot heroin, too.
Voice of a booze soaked angel.
Very good emotional blues. Janis Joplin's voice is legendary for a reason. Some of the performances are chilling.
I had never gotten around to this before, but listening now, this is great. Janis has some wild rock and roll moments juxtaposed against some really nice laid back gospel and R&B moments.
Enjoyable vocals, a nice blend of some songs I’d heard and new, and a very complete album. One of the better albums I’ve heard through this challenge
Starts off crazy strong, goes a bit too country but good album with super strong feeling throughout.
Tolle Stimme! Lebendig. Schwungvoll
First track goes hard.
Really solid album. I’d never listened to it before I bought it on vinyl in 2021. It’s not really what I’d listen to normally with a heavier country feel, but can’t deny her amazing vocals and the general musicality displayed here.
The best I've heard from her. Her voice still grates after a while, but some great songs.
This album doesn't reinvent the wheel nor is it full of mega hits but the sheer raw power and emotion in Janis' voice make this album so unique and deserve the 4 stars
Really liked this album and the nice rasp in her voice. Not really sure about Mercedes benz but I think that was meant to be more of a raw recording of her just having fun. Pleasantly surprised - 4/5
sweet, smooth and soulful favourite album so far by a way great album, not just great songs right up my street 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 definitely downloading nothing bad to say 8.5/10
Never heard of this album before but I really enjoyed it. Great natural vocals and loved the rock/blues band. Some great blues guitar riffs and funky skunky basslines. Cry baby and Me and Bobby McGee were the highlights. 4.3/5 would 100% listen again.
This is her posthumous album, and it's hard to listen without thinking about what might have been. What a powerful voice. Best track: Me and Bobby McGee
She has a great voice, and its a very enjoyable set of songs. I think I prefer this to the big brother album as it has a better range of vocal styles. The background to this album is pretty sad though
Never been a huge fan of Janis Joplin but the Full Tilt Boogie Band are pretty cool. This was much funkier than I was expecting.
Janis Joplin - the sharpest yet soothing voice. Incredibly relaxing record. A staple of 70s. Highlights: Me and Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz
Super muzyka, energetyczna bardzo charakterystyczny i ciekawy głos. Mocne 4/5
Charakterystyczny głos i chwytliwe melodie, czego chcieć więcej?
Amazing talent. Some of the songs get a little repetitive but her abilities are on full display here and it's an incredible show.
Blues rock
just buy her a fucking mercedes benz already. this was a lot better than i was expecting. for some unknown reason i always thought janis joplin was a hippy flower girl so never bothered to listen to her. she can wail.
Not a great deal to say about this - it's a classic blues album by an artist gone too soon.
Solid LP and great work by Janis. Side 2 is much better and has higher stakes than side 1.
Good, nice bluesy tracks. Great organ and vocals. A few classics and a few ok tracks .
Sad it's her last album. Such a voice. Such a woman! (7/10) FT: Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz, Get It While You Can
Un disco con picos muy altos. Otra voz así no ha habido.
A great album from Joplin.
Herranjestas miten hyvin tämmönen belttaus ja sähköurut toimii, ainoa miinus on ehkä pieni itsensä toistaminen. 4/5.
Yo! Great album!
A solid 4-star album, with a couple of 5-star songs.
4-, really energetic melodies, great and unique vocal of Janis Joplin, various genres, nice one
3.5/5 Took some time before the album got to me and this is not completly my style and genre. But in the end I can see why this album is on the list and also why she is such a beloved artist. Her voice is something you can’t stop listening to. Favourite songs : - Me and Bobby McGee - Mercedes Benz - Cry baby
Can’t go wrong with Janis Joplin. I like her work with Big Brother and the Holding Company better, but this is solid
Achingly good
It's a great, physical Roch album. Joplin's voice is incredible, a one off, and the songs fit her very well. Cry Baby and Mercedes Benz are the obvious classics, but everything on there has a bit of that classic/psych/garage rock feel that feels perfectly East US at a particular point. The only disappointing bits are where she takes a back seat and allows a bit of excess noodling from the band, which sucks some of the pace and energy out of the affair.
The strange thing here is that Janis Joplin's reputation is often staked on her R&B prowess, but I think her best performances here are on 'Me and Bobby McGee' (country) and 'Trust Me' (soul ballad). When the band gets hot she pushes herself to match the energy and I'm not sure I like the results quite as much. Still, this is a great collection - production is crisp, the execution is on point and I even like the instrumental track. Sad that this was Joplin's final testament, as there are hints as to what could have been.
Love this. Have always known a few of the songs, but thisnis the first time i have listened to a JJ album right through. Cool music and suits many different moods.
good album liked mercedes benz
Great album- Me and Bobby McGee is a classic. I don't think I'd heard any of the other songs before, but they're also very good. Joplin's voice is great, and the backing tracks are all tight throughout. I'll be putting Me and Bobby McGee and Piece of My Heart on some of my playlists now.
Great songs. Great performances. RIP Janis. Gone too soon.
Love how versatile her voice is - that raspy edge giving songs extra power in their emotion when she powers it up, but then evoking something almost forlorn when the instrumentals soften and the music slows (heard especially in the all-vocal "Mercedes Benz" and the gentle introduction to "Trust Me"). just a powerful range shown here. I think I'll need to do another listen to really distinguish between songs, but a very enjoyable first listen-through.
Full of energized instrumental performances that are steeped in blues rock, with plenty of moving parts and intrusions from new timbres. All of this is of course overshadowed by Janis' amazingly distinctive voice and her scorching performance on this record. While she's obviously a talented singer when it comes to hitting notices and doing quick runs, the beauty of her vocals are the rugged imperfections imperfections that fit middle america blues rock like a glove.
OK, this is one you will always see in a bargain bin at a record store. Can’t say I’ve listened to it in its entirety, I’m wondering what big Janis hits are on this one. Will definitely listen to it and report back! EDIT: pretty good record, has a lot of Janis’s big hits. But it’s that kind of standard late 60s early 70s blues rock stuff a la Paul Butterfield, John Mayall, etc. miss Joplin had a huge voice and even bigger spirit and is probably the first huge female rockstar.
Really good
There is no doubting Janis Joplin's vocal talents but I feel it was a shame she never got the time to write more of her own songs. For this album to have been released a few months after her death containing the song Mercedes Benz which she only recorded 3 days prior to her death is nothing short of a travisty. I have watched a few documentaries about her short life and I do feel this album could have been somewhat better but for her untimely death. She certainly was a force of nature and her vocal range was astounding. I enjoyed this album from an historic experience. What a chanter!
Somehow I'd never heard her before, but she's got a unique voice paired with intelligent lyrics.
It is a banger, Enjoyable listening, What an awesome voice. 8/10
é do disco, inclusive, minha favorita da JJ, "Me and Bobby McGee"
Would probably give it a 3.5, but I'll round up to 4
Mercedes Benz might be the worst song that I love...
Very bluesy and way better than expected. I was only mildly familiar with Janis Joplin’s most popular hits, so this was a pleasant surprise. I’ll add this to my rotation.
Pretty good! Certainly glad I listened to it. I'll probably go back to at least a couple of the songs at some point. "Half Moon"" was my favorite of the tracks. I also really liked Janis Joplin's voice, though I would understand if somebody else told me that they didn't.
alveg fín
Love Move On and Me & Bobby McGee
Enjoyed this. Certainly a unique voice. Drags towards the end.
8/10
Can't help but thinking when Leonard Cohen got the blowjob and how it was to write such a famous song about it.
Janis, ó Janis. Snilld.
Very 60s sounding. I don't think I've ever heard it but liked it a lot better than I expected. An amazing voice and some pretty strong songs
Janis doesn’t do much for me but I can’t deny the power and charisma
Good shit
Listening to this a little tired & hungover on the first day of Jan. Slip joints into the mix for the perfect combo. Not quite the gusto in the voice of the previous album by JJ, but powerful nonetheless
3.8 - excellent listen. Powerful blues, unique voice. Her cover of Me and Bobby McGee is one of the best songs of all-time.
Watch a monster vocalist show the world how it should be done. Raw, energetic, Joplin is backed by an incredible blues rock band that matches her powerful vocals.
Not generally what I'd listen to but undeniably brilliant.
Really enjoyed this album. The vocals are incredible and the uniqueness of her voice really shines over the cool instrumentals. 7.5/10
Soul very
Well produced.
I liked this one a lot more than I expected to again. The beginning was a little slow and I wasn't sure about it, but the background piano in Half Moon and Buried Alive in the Blues was really cool. Blues scales in general sound really good if they're done right, and this was definitely done right. Honestly I'd give all 3 albums so far a 3.5/5, which might be saying something about me? Idk. I gave both of them a 4, so I guess I'm rounding up
Janis's voice is so distinctive, and she sings with so much soul and emotion. I don't intentionally listen to blues very often, but I enjoyed the entire album from beginning to the end. Favourite songs: Cry Baby, A Woman Left Lonely, Mercedes Benz
8/10 overall a nice listen. good songwriting, but sometimes the vocal performance got a little over the top for me.
A really fun listen, if a little one-note. 8/10
Oh this was just superb! Absolutely loved it.
Only knew Mercedes Benz and Bobby McGee before. Didn’t expect to enjoy this so much - straight into regular rotation.
blues rock
Janis is so special in personality and as a vocal presence. The music actually dragged this album down a bit.
This was really good.
Great album. My review is tainted slightly by my own ignorance. I always though of Janis Joplin as a singer/songwriter/musician - come to find out she didn't write any of these songs and only played guitar on one (Me and Bobby McGee). Still - I'm tasked with rating the album, not my preconceived notions of a single artist. To that end - the songs are great, but made great by Joplin's vocals. Sung by anyone else, I don't think they'd land as well. The music is just sloppy enough to match her rough vocal style. Get it While You Can is a standout track - even with the more iconic songs on this album.
This sounds like a performer at the top of her craft. Sadly we never got to find out where she would go from here. She was one of a kind and this album is a great testament to her brilliance. 4 stars.
4.5 Great voice, great band. Good songs. Tragic that this was her last album.
Enjoyed more than expected.
Pleasantly surprised. Lotta soul. Lotta funk. 4.5.
By far Janis's most refined album. I think the rawness of Big Brother suites her voice more, but this was a really good album
Good album. Great to listen to at the end of a busy day
Good album
Great voice, decent lyrics
Лучшие песни: Move Over (кайф), Cry Baby (ваще кайф, лучшая песня на альбоме), Half Moon, Mercedes Benz (ну мило) Не очень: Me and Bobby McGee (ну я такое не сильно люблю), Get It While You Can (просто менее всего запомнилась)
Classic. What a voice. What passion. No one did it better.
A solid album that showcases the best of Janis
So soulful and expressive. Feels deeply heartfelt. Would've been intense to see live.
Way better and more polished than I was expecting. Some brilliant songs on it like half moon, all are decent. Giving 3.5 rounded up to 4.
Tremendo trip
timeless raw and heartbreaking posthumous albums rarely hit so hard.
what a woman
this was my first time listening to this album in its entirety! prior to this i had only heard "me and bobby mcgee" (my personal favorite). i also vaguely remember my confirmation teacher ranting about "mercedes benz" and me subsequently losing my mind at the absurdity of it all. that's how you know janis is an icon. i was initially introduced to her when i heard "piece of my heart" and watched her performance in the woodstock documentary. nothing compares to the sound of this woman's voice!!! she was truly a gem. or should i say, pearl.
Great album. She has a powerful voice, and the songs have really good instrumentals
Good afternoon music to play in the background.
Really lovely.
Was good, might return to it.
muito bom
Very enjoyable album, great voice!
Very good album. Really enjoyable listening
Spensierato e tormentato. Sussurrato e urlato.
you can hear the unadulterated passion in her voice. very powerful
i liked it
Classic
Blues rock songs sung increadibly soulfully with a great and unique voice. 'Me and Bobby McGee' seemed a bit out of place, having all the usual country music tropes. Seems a shame that this was her biggest hit when everything else was on here is very different and much better. Overall a really good album.
4/5
That voice!

Good. Janis added to my collection. I’ll give this some more time.
Classic! Somehow my GF hated it. Led to some fun arguments.
Her voice...
Never listened to much Joplin, and was shocked that she really only put out two albums based her huge cultural influence! Better throughout than I expected, and definitely full of bluesy 60's hippie style...even for coming out early 70s
Really good overall - Mercedes Benz was a beautiful song, especially just having acapella
What is this, classics week? Back to back 27 Club legends. I'm familiar with a few Janis Joplin songs, but haven't heard an album. This posthumous release contains my favorite song by far, "Me and Bobby McGee." She had such a unique, gravelly voice that lends itself perfectly to the sort of blues-rock styles explored here. Short and sweet, with very few songs that don't hit for me. This is another one that I can't give a perfect rating today, but it could definitely rise to that level. Fantastic album all the way through. Favorite tracks: Me and Bobby McGee, Trust Me, A Woman Left Lonely, My Baby, Get It While You Can. Album art: Portraits like this aren't usually my thing, but for a posthumous album I think it's great. It's tender without compromising her free-wheeling image. The framing is excellent as well. 4.5/5
I am glad I have grown into Janis Joplin. I was putting this album off because I have always found her voice grating, but now I see a deep soul and feeling. The songs are beautiful.
2 perfect songs. The rest is also great. 4.5
Really, really good. That voice. And as always, fuck heroin.
her voice is a powerhouse. she joined blues and rock so well, and there are a few classics on this one.
This Lady was special. You really feel it when she sings. Sad how things turned out for her. Would have been a bright career after this album.
One of the best Posthumous albums
Great album to end a career on honestly.
Great!
Not everything was 100% for me, but it was all still really good. 4-4.5/5
Me and my bobbyyyy mcgee!! I'll give it a few more listens, but I'll definitely listen to other albums from her, she's good.
Me and Bobby McGee like this album!! Rock on
Greatest voice of all time? Almost every song is good, the great ones completely overshadow the not so great. The great ones really take advantage of her range and voice and passion. The hoarsness comes through and it feels so real. Some songs reminded me of Dylan in that they start calm and collected and eventually end in a very different way. The passion is always there in the background and it's just waiting to come out (for Dylan it's the harmonica, for Joplin it's her voice). Trust Me is probs my favorite, but the first two and last one are great as well.
Sings with such soul that you dont see today. Very good, classic rock vibes with soul.
Actually a surprisingly enjoyable listen
Never really dug her stuff before but pleasantly surprised to like this album
Joplin's distinct voice really makes this record. It's fun, exuberant, and loaded with some phenomenal instrumentals (see opener "Move Over"). Shame we lost her so young, seems like she'd be a lot of fun to see live. Favorite tracks: "Move Over", "Cry Baby"
7.5/10 F.T.: Me and Bobby McGee
ayo
3.5 - a few I haven't heard and I liked
It's easy to respect Janis, she's just not really my taste. The band isn't bad but it's a niche bad-ass hippie-power rock that stems from a classic rock and roll sound. Great execution, but it's a somewhat bland experience for me. This of course is secondary to Joplin's voice, which I do find appealing, but not enough to want to play this record beyond today. I'm glad I heard it, I'm happy I went deep into it and used my best speakers for the experience. I don't need this record for my collection, though I might consider it at the right price, for the art.
cracking voice
Typiskt Janis, okej
Wasnt album, seemed like a pretty generic 70s rock album
Favorite song: A Woman Left Lonely
- It was alr. But uh you go queen.
nice selection of songs, voice ranging from Aretha to Adele
Such an iconic voice - did not know she was the one who sang Cry Baby! Or that she died during the sessions for this record.
It was... fine? Nothing special, but not-not enjoyable
Wow, what an amazing voice spoiled by a terrible backing band. Janis has such a powerful and unique sound, if only the band playing behind her could get their shit together. If it wasn't for the amateurs wanking off while trying to play their instruments in the background, this album would easily be among my top albums. Standout vocal performances are "Me and Bobby McGee", "Mercedes Benz", and "Move Over". "Mercedes Benz" is proof that the band knew they weren't needed. The only thing the drummer did was keep beat. Ms. Joplin carries every song, as she should and her vocals are so beautiful and her vocal fry is incredible. Unfortunately, because Big Brother & The Holding Company suck so much shit it's a 6/10 for me.
Nice predetaor of woman-rock
Album 231. Pearl (https://open.spotify.com/album/6JltsW8Goc3cZQ0GOtTX2z?si=X5yVrjiIRNmS3WE7Iklu-A) — Janis Joplin (1971) Iconic voice, great blues rock album, but not mine. I liked it as one-time listen only. 3/5 No liked songs
I recognize the production quality, this is just not my type of music.
Meh This is fine, but that's about it
Great album. Enjoyed it a lot. Didn’t realize she had so many bangers. I felt it could have had a bit more soul though.
This is described in quite grand terms on Apple Music, but I didn't find this reflected in the music really. It came across to me as a fairly typical album of the era that didn't make a massive impression on me, but it was definitely enjoyable as background music.
Pretty good
Nice but not my style. Good powerful voice. Nice orchestration.
JJ is very polarizing. People love her or hate her. I’m indifferent. Sometimes her voice hits my ears wrong but it’s rare, so I enjoyed most of this album.
Cool album. Not one I want to relisten to a lot but it’s well done.
Listening to Janis always makes me want to clear my throat
Love her voice, but musically pretty generic
Incredible voice, good album
Buried Alive In the Blues was an incredible instrumental song. Me and Bobby McGee is obviously catchy, but weirdly enough didn't stand out to me, haha. Yeah, her voice was one-of-a-kind, really awesome.
I actively refused to validate Janis Joplin when I was younger, but older me can admit she was a real powerhouse. This is probably the only JJ record you really need - it’s got Bobby McGee and Mercedes Benz on it, and that’s about as much as most people know of her catalog.
6/10
Jackie Jormp-Jomp
good. full of emotion. just not the style i like
Previously known.
