Beautiful guitar, beautiful piano, beautiful voice. So soothing, a perfect album
I'd heard some of his music on soundtracks before. I would definitely listen to this again. Sadly, gone too soon.
Such a string of strong albums recently. Anyway yeah five stars who cares. I mean it might be hard to put into words the greatness of nick drake but you should just take a listen. It’s the pinnacle of sophisticated minimalism. On it’s face it’s folk. Minimal arrangements usually it’s just Drake’s voice and a guitar or two, but herein lies the rub - just his vocals and guitar playing makes for an arrangement which is both lush and intimate. He’s singing at you while both of you are sitting at the edge of the bed. He’s singing for himself unaware of you watching him. Super intimate and small and well crafted. It feels simple but Drake’s incredible fingerpicking arrangements are very full and narrative. Drake’s delivery is often almost whisper like but so powerful. It’s like he’s using the minimal amount of strength needed to tug at your heart strings. Anyway if you want to hear one of the greatest folk albums, or greatest singer songwriters or just one of the greatest albums of all time this is for you. Five stars.
Pink moon is such a beautiful track and serves as the perfect opener to the album of the same name. The track perfectly sets the tone and mood for the rest of the album, which is full of delicate beauty. The minimalist instrumentation serves the songs well and highlights the strength of Drake’s vocals, especially on tracks such as Things behind the sun. At only 28 minutes the only slight negative is that i would have happily had more, but i guess the adage is leave them wanting more
loved it classic
Loved this album. Sad and beautiful at the same time.
Absolutely beautiful.
I love all Nick Drake's albums, and I am sad there are so few.
A very underproduced album, but the lyrics were great. Pretty different from the other albums on this list. Favorite Songs: Things Behind the Sun, From The Morning
Lovely surprise.
An absolute timeless classic of poetry- both stunningly beautiful and haunting. No Elliot smith or Phoebe Bridgers without Nick Drake and this album.
It's hard to say why this album resonates with me so much. It's very minimal, with every song (except for the piano part on the first one) consisting of just Nick Drake's unique voice and his acoustic guitar, however it is the definition of doing a lot with a little. The songs don't really have much structure either, most don't even have choruses, just a bunch of verses with the occasional instrumental interludes. So what is it that makes this album not only great, but one of my favorites of all time? Well it's a few things really. Nick's guitar playing is really fascinating throughout this entire album and also so easy to get lost in. He creates these organic, warm guitar tones that just sound so goddamn good and so rich despite their simplicity. Together with his soothing voice that feels very comforting it creates this perfect harmony and just makes me feel things. The album creates kind of a full circle moment with the first titular track feeling like watching the sun rise on a breezy fall morning, while the closer's gentle guitar lead that eventually fizzles out creates this vibe of witnessing the sunset after a long day. The lyrics also enhance this, describing how the night dawns and using this metaphor of night and day as life and death to express the sentiment of benefiting from everyday and focusing on the time we have left. It's a beautiful thought to leave the album on, and brings me to another amazing aspect of the album - the lyricism. I love that it's very poetic, pretty and filled with meaning, while still being quite simple to understand. His rich, mostly nature-based comparisons and metaphors combined with the organic production give you this feeling of laying in the middle of a forest and feeling connected to the nature. Place to Be is a simple song, yet still a beautiful reflection on growth. Which Will comes off as deeply dark and philosophical in a way which is touching and emotionally compelling. Things Behind the Sun is my favorite song here, partly because of the dark, mysterious vibes and amazing chord progression around the chorus, partly because of the genius lyrics. The whole song essentially feels like a conversation with himself, an inner monologue, debating fame, pressure and depression in such a beautiful way. Despite being very simple, this is truly one of the most beautiful and unique folk albums I've ever heard, and the context around it adds a whole new meaning and perspective to it.
It transports me to another time and place that I haven't got to yet.
Beautiful and sad
Hits so hard in November
Nice, ambient, classic folk sounding. Feels like it belongs in Juno.
Amazing album. I highly recommend it
Never even heard of Nick Drake before today. This album is positively amazing. So tranquil and beautiful. Will be listening to this again and again.
I'm listening to this album around 7 in the morning on a gray, chilly Tuesday in early November, the day after my most recent temp placement ended, feeling uncertain about the future while I wait to hear back about the next one... I'm not completely focused on the music, but it's providing an excellent soundtrack for this particular moment in my life, you know?
Soothing! I like this one
It's his masterpiece.
One of all time favorites
A pink moon is on its way. Nick Drake, I first discovered this album when a mature student at my college I somehow became friends with who had been an ex addict in his 20’s and turned his life around later on told me I should listen to Nick Drake after us chatting back and forth about music. I think this album is beautiful all the way through I love how his guitar riffs blend in with his voice to create a sound that is hard to pinpoint but unmistakable nonetheless. Folky sounds tend not to be my jam but I think this one manages to just tug perfectly on the heart. RIP Nick, hope the after life was kinder to you.
I liked this way more than the previous Nick Drake album from this list. The whole album was good, but particularly enjoyed "Road" "Which Will" and "Pink Moon"
I was quite enamored with Nick Drake’s debut album Five Leaves Left when it came up about a month ago, so I was excited when this came across the screen today. This one is his third and final album before he passed away in 1974. This was a big time sound shift from Five Leaves Left; all the backing instruments have been stripped away, leaving just Drake and a guitar or piano (he played all the instruments himself). It’s amazing how much he gets out of such simple arrangements combined with his vocals, which truly sound like a man who is nearing the sad end of a battle with depression. His lyrics will make you feel all kinds of feels, with ‘Place to Be’ and ‘Which Will’ hitting me particularly hard. The guitar work on ‘Free Ride’ is superb. I’m not sure if I liked this more or less than Five Leaves Left, but it also might be equal because I listened to it twice in a row, so this is gonna cross the threshold as my ninth 5/5.
Wow I mean what to say about this. I think breaking his songwriting down to its most basic elements (just an acoustic guitar and his vocals) doesn't at all degrade the quality, as I think the extra instruments on all the other albums were just extra stuff, which made them more 'palatable' to a widespread audience. I think some of his most heartbreaking songs are on here, like place to be, pink moon and most notably parasite, which is maybe the saddest most perfect song ever. And I think the reason why they're so heartbreaking is because they are truly the most honest music he'd made up to this point, as he had stopped caring about what the label wanted or what would sell, and made just honest songs for himself, which is why I think people consider it his best album, even though its so short and arguably incomplete. His lyrics are the most surreal on here, maybe partially due to the stuff I just mentioned, or maybe due to somewhat mental collapse, but I think it makes these songs all the more vivid and strange. I think his playing on here is the most creative out of all the albums, because it needs to stand out more as its the only instrument. For example the really strange guitar part on know, which does feel quite incomplete, but maybe that makes it really good. Obviously no downsides, aside from the short runtime, and I think in conclusion I like all of his albums the exact same amount. I think 'Lifting the mask from a local clown, feeling down like him' is the best lyric in the history of music. Favourite songs: all. Overall around 10/10
For me the best folk album of all time. His other stuff is special too, but the simplicity of this album and the pure beauty of it make it his best for me. Thanks to Island Records for always believing in the man! Will be listening for a lifetime.
Solid 5. Just lovely and delightful the whole way through. I listened to most of this while on a crisp fall walk to the gym and I had to pause it upon arrival because this album just so definitely deserves to be enjoyed fully on a crisp fall walk. Would do again 100/10.
i cried
Sparse but oh so warm. One of the more personal albums I've heard. And not personal in the "this guy is baring his soul to me" way but more in a, "it sounds like he is playing in the room with me" kind of way. Very inviting.
This hurt my heart 4.75
This is just a beautiful album overall. As I was listening to Pink Moon, I found that most of the songs ended too early for me. (When I'm listening to a new album, I usually want the opposite!) This is a credit to Nick Drake's solid song writing. Liked Songs Added; Pink Moon Things Behind The Sun From The Morning
Really intriguing and I love the album artwork. It was a cool album and I will listen again
Always bittersweet, always beautiful.
Fabulous. Better than five leaves left and bryter later. The best but the most challenging.
An alltime great
All of Nick’s works are perfect in their own ways, this one in its darkness. Sadly, it’s as indicative of his mental state at the time as it is his ability to craft exquisite songs. The myths about this album sit alongside the very real anguish he was facing, but among the truths are his obsession with certain guitar lines and phrases, that show up in repetitive, circular songs that are evocative and melancholy. Music born from a dark night of the soul can heal or hurt in equal measure, but this has always been a favorite even if it’s also the last thing we would hear from Nick Drake before he was gone.
Should be a fairly straightforward 5 stars this one, glad I already knew of this album before because I wanted something easy today. I had this rated at 4.5 on RYM but should strongly consider increasing it to perfect 5, this is such a beautiful recording.
I vividly remember hearing part of Pink Moon for the first time. Sitting in my basement watching TV and a Volkswagen commercial comes on with this mesmerizing tune as a couple drives a beautiful road in their VW Rabbit convertible to a party. They pull into the party look at each other and keep driving. Fell in love with that song instantly and forever became a huge fan of Nick Drake. This, like all of his albums is so hauntingly beautiful. Always an enjoyable listen, but for some reason it hits all the right notes in an Autumn setting. Perfect placement in time once again for this incredible piece of music. Hits just like it did all those years ago with every subsequent listen.
incroyable
Classic
So amazing
His voice, guitar tones, and playing are so unique, absolutely amazing. This record is so raw and stripped back, but so complex at the same time.
This is really great guitar and song writing. 5/5
28 minutes of intricate guitar work, faint piano, and Nick Drake's voice. Listening to that elemental palette never quite gets old.
On the previous Nick Drake album we had (Five Leaves Left) I wrote: "Love Nick Drake. Pink Moon will get 5 stars from me. This gets 4." I was in a generous mood, because although I do love Nick Drake, I'm not sure people need to hear TWO Nick Drake albums before they die. Still, this is the one.
Gorgeous and perfect and sad and amazing.
Absolutely beautiful
Incredibly beautiful songs here. Drake’s guitar does so much, creates so much depth even while the compositions and honestly songwriting are so sparse. This album is a lullaby, peaceful and often haunting.
Just a pleasant listen
one of my favorites!!!!!!!
Nick Drake walked so Hozier could run. 🏃♂️
Like condensation rolling off a green apple. What a beautiful album for the gentle spring sun
A spectacular album. The sound of a warm fire in a stark, cold room
A sad strange album about God knows what since the lyrics were more akin to observations than poetry but that somehow worked even better since it was pretty much just Nick Drake & his guitar on the album (some piano) certainly his best album (not that the other two are not great too- they very much are) I have long been a fan & I believe I own everything he ever recorded yes even 'the final four' on vinyl AND CD & this is the album I have heard the most (like 100 times NOT remotely kidding) it's a thing of great and rare beauty. You should listen to Pink Moon. Or don't as Pink Moon much like all his other works seems to have been created with a total disinterest in finding an audience.
Nick Drake is sort of timeless. While his sound is quite similar to Stormbringer! era John Martyn, it feels like it could have been released this year and fit in perfectly too. There's something about these songs that feel so genuine and real. It's like the songs are just pouring out of him. The tuned down guitar gives everything a darkness and a moody feel, but nothing on this album feels depressing. Some really great melodies and exceptional acoustic guitar playing. And that's all we get. Besides a tiny bit of piano in the title track, it's stripped back to just a voice and a guitar, but often feels like so much more. A timeless classic.
Really good, it did fit exactly to my mood. But can see myself listening to it anytime 4.6
Took a break from this 1000 albums a day, jumping back in. Never heard of this artist or album. 1st track, a nice acoustic intro, very cool and chill alternative vibe. Laid back vocals, like an elliot smith, but more upbeat. Kind of reminds me of Joni mitchell too I like the open ringing sound of the guitars, maybe some open tunings, very folky but with a pop vocalist the fingerstyle is very cool, very interesting rhythms that pop out, very impressive if it's just one guitar which I think it might be? I dont know though. Okay i think it is just him and one guitar, which is so sick, the whole thing is like this Really short album, 28 minutes, but 11 tracks. really gets through a lot of ideas very quickly back to back How is he playing this complicated stuff and playing so well. I do really like this fingerstyle stuff, with vocals super impressive. and then he did a track Know, that was literally like me playing my first blues riff when i was 13. super clunky and stripped back, very repetitive with a very simple vocal part over the top. Very unusual, right int he middle of the album but a bit of a palate cleanser, then back to the complex fingerstyle stuff
9/10 Sublime guitar folk. Nothing but the songs and the man and his guitar. The recording of the guitar is wonderful - it plucks and chimes directly in your ear as if nick were sat in front of you.
far from my first time hearing this but I’ll take any excuse to listen to it again Nick Drake truly was one of the most talented musicians around, and tragically too good for this world - 10/10
Toppen!
Feels raw and improvisational, like this is the culmination of years upon years of folk music mastery just flowing out effortlessly.
Classic
"Pink Moon" is the third and final album by English singer-songwriter and musician Nick Drake. Folk and indie folk are the Wiki-listed genres. Yes, he basically stays that course here. The album was recorded over two nights with engineer John Wood and without a band and Drake on vocals and an acoustic guitar (a single piano melody was overdubbed on the title song). The lyrical themes included depression, lust and a slim ray of hope. Drake suffered from depression and a few years later would die from an overdose of antidepressants. The album did not do well commercially. Initially, the album had mixed reviews (Huh?) but now has significant critical acclaim. An acoustic guitar and Drake's mostly tenor voice opens "Pink Moon." His lyrics are mostly mumbled as his vocals go deeper into a baritone. Ominous and foreboding lyrics. A piano gets dubbed over the guitar. Absolutely beautiful music. Drake's strumming guitar begins "Place to Be." Sad lyrics as Drake sings about being younger and more optimistic and now he's older and darker than the deepest sea. If there were any questions whether Drake could play a country guitar, he answers that positively in "Which Will." Drake asks the question who will you choose if you don't choose me. A more melodic guitar is showcased in "Parasite." Heartfelt lyrics as Drake wanders the town to only find loneliness. The album closes with "From the Morning." Drake is finger picking his guitar and playing both a lead and a rhythm (at least it sounds like it). Th sun rises, falls and repeats itself. Is he talking about his insomnia? Depression? He's obviously stuck in s cycle. This album is short in length at 28 minutes with songs in the 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 minute length. Some songs have two sentences, some two stanzas and some six stanzas. Drake's lyrics are poetic with nature imagery. He contrasts perspectives and covers topics such as loneliness, falling fast, his current state, sex/lust and even happiness in one song. Above all else his lyrics are very personal. His vocals are exhausted and he strains to hit his octaves at times. His guitar playing is absolutely exquisite - bluesy, country, bluegrass, stretching strings and tones and playing multiple parts. This album could just be listened to for his guitar playing. When everything is put together this is quite the album. Heartbreaking and stunning at the same time. This is an absolute must listen for all music fans.
Just beautiful.
The production on this album rules and I love it
Nick Drake makes sweet, beautiful, melancholic love to his guitar. 4.6 outta 5
One of my all time favorite albums
Essential. Unreal talent similar to Jeff Buckley but 20 years earlier (too similar in one respect - both taken far too soon). Not many albums on this list (so far) that you can comfortably play from the start again as soon as it finishes but this is one of them. Easy 5 stars this.
How beautiful an album can be 10/10
This album was very lovely and atmospheric to listen to. The acoustic guitars sound amazing, and I really enjoy his voice and artistic approach. I would definitely listen to it again!
Pink Moon is simply beautiful. At just 28 minutes and 5 seconds, it feels almost too brief but every second counts. A flawless 10/10.
Nick Drake’s Pink Moon is an absolutely beautiful album. “Timeless” doesn’t even feel big enough for it. I put it on, listened to a few tracks, and quickly found myself pulled in, not just by the music but by the need to understand more about who Drake was. It’s so simple - just him and his guitar, with the rare piano line on the title track - and that rawness makes it all the more powerful. Nothing gets in the way. Every note feels direct, like he’s playing in the same room. What strikes me is how pure it is. There’s no attempt to dress it up or make it something bigger than it is. And yet, knowing what he went through, there’s a sadness behind it - especially the idea that he only seemed at ease when he was creating. I can relate to that feeling: the peace that comes only when you’re in the act of making something. Even all these years later, Pink Moon feels alive, whispering to whoever’s willing to slow down and listen.
Masterpiece one of the greatest albums of all time 10/10 just wish it was longer than 28 minutes
always a classic. can't get enough of it, but it always feels new
Great melancholic acoustic guitar record.
Favourite track(s): Pink Moon; Place To Be; Things Behind the Sun; Free Ride Funny enough that Pink Moon features a piano when the rest of the album is so focused on guitar play. Sensual, evocative, driven guitar play plus some really soft vocals. While some of the tracks are rather simple, the mood created is strong. Feels like Nick Drake had to walk, so a number of artists could run (Bon Iver comes to mind). This will be a regular listen in the years to come.
Outstanding Album from beginning to end. Understanding the sad direction that his life took makes this album all the more poignant. An amazing song writer.
Great album. The songs blend together a bit, but in a good way.
It’s magic. Rare that a single voice and guitar can be so captivating.
Great album great listen
Used to listen to this album before I was cool. A pinnacle was hearing it in a cafe trying to impress a date and asking if it was pink moon by Nick Drake - where the staff looked at me like I was a knob head.. Love the Melodies, the guitar, the gentle vocals of Nick. A welcoming album that makes me feel at peace. Enjoyed nearly every song on the album. Only complaint that a 11 song album being 27mins is a crime!! Recommend listening sitting on a canal in the sun with a beer, watching the world go by
Lovely, spare, beautiful
It’s simplistic and beautiful, just like this review
Beautiful album.
I was pleasantly surprised by this. It took me about half the album to get into his sound and to see what is actually happening - his sound is very easy to "miss". Songs are short, vocals and instruments are spare, tempo and dynamic changes even more so. It's easy to blink for a second and miss it. But when you're present for Nick Drake, oh boy - he manages to capture that shameful, shy feeling of grey skies across one's mind and body. That feeling has followed me all my life. It's both beautiful and sad to hear someone else walking around under those same grey skies. I'm glad I heard this before I die. I think others will be too. Heaven fucking help me if there's more than one album from this artist on this list though
genuinely beautiful, haunting but uplifting. so sad that nick’s genius wasn’t recognised in his lifetime, but grateful we have this album. rip nick, you left something truly gorgeous.
27 mins of pure musical bliss. Nick Drake got me through some times. Not one skippable song. This album is pure gold.
Fun one, easy 5 stars for listenability and songwriting
Folky sounding, very organic. Vocals feel heartfelt, not very polished. Picky/strumy, full sounding acoustic playing, feels full even though it's a pretty minimal arrangement.
Loved it. He could be a successful artist today.
My second Nick Drake album. I wasn’t that fussed on the previous one but this one was bloody brilliant. I couldn’t sleep last night so this was a very rare occasion where I could listen to the album on my own with zero distractions and I definitely think that made a difference. I’m going to give Bryter Layter another go at some point. Top Track - Know
Makes me want to go camping and look at stars
Ethereal, sad, troubadour folk music perfection. Nick Drake really was built differently, this is everything Cat Stevens wished he could be, instead Drake makes it all sound so effortless.
5/10
A classic, I should listen to it more often.
Words are not necessary and a review feels reductive. This album is Afraid, beautiful masterpiece. Simple, understated, hushed, intimate, yet so far away, so remote. Easy 5.
Album I want to come back to. Love his voice
This is an absolute belter. So good I listened to it twice back to back
I recently rediscovered this artist and enjoy listening to this album in the morning with my coffee. He has a deep rich smooth voice similar to a fresh cup of coffee
Ok this was excellent. Reminded me of Alexis Murdoch. Super good
Stripped down to the bare necassities of just a man's voice and his guitar. Very chill, introspective and reflective. You have to be in the mood for this kind of music, but if you are it is very well worth a listen. Quality throughout, but missing a bit real standout highlights. On the other hand, only a runtime of 28 minutes, and I am very much a fan of records that know not to overstay their welcome and are more condensed and concise, instead of meandering and bloated, so there's an extra point for that.
Very relaxing, great vocals and lyrics, reminds me of Bill Callahan, John Mayer, Bon Iver
Favorite tracks: Horn, Parasite Listened to this while driving through the Driftless Area, which was perfect. I see why this is the album everyone likes. It's the third (and I think last) Nick Drake album I've gotten on this list, and it's definitely my favorite of the three. I don't know the background of the recording, but it sounds like he really discovered and leaned into his strengths here. Quite enjoyable! Edit 9/5/2025: I'll be honest, I keep thinking about this album! I've found myself revisiting it a few times. I'm changing my rating from a 4 to a 5. This one really is special.
This is the 169th album I’m rating. I've heard of him and this album before but I don't really know what it sounds like. Hopefully it's amazing though. Adding to my Playlist - Pink Moon, Place to be, Road, Which Will, Horn, Things Behind the Sun, Know, Parasite, Free Ride, Harvest Bred, and From the Morning. Not Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. All in all I liked 11/11 songs. Extremely basic but enjoyable.
Fantastic album. I am very familiar with this and Nick Drake’s discography and this is an album I listened to repeatedly about 10 years ago. I’m still not sure what my favorite Nick Drake album is but that’s because they’re all so good, but this one is iconic
mhm mhm
I’ve loved this album for years. I wish Nick Drake had lived long enough to know he was successful
I never get tired of Nick Drake, from the moment I heard him on a VW commercial way back when to today when I listened to Pink Moon from start to finish for this project. There’s something effortless about his delivery which combined with his talented guitar playing comes together in a way few artists have for me. Such a classic album.
How can an album so warm be so dark at the same time? This doesn't make me sad, but it does numb me in a way that no other album can. Pure magic
Melancholia to its true core. Perhaps the best folk album ever written.
Pink Moon might be the ultimate masterpiece of contemporary folk. A truly essential album. If this is not a 5 stars, I don't know what a 5 stars can be.
Thank you Levi’s jeans for using “Pink Moon” in an ad. No Shazam in those days, so I had to search out exactly who that was singing the most achingly beautiful melancholy. Easily one of my top albums of all time - guitar work, lyrics, vocals that highlight the best of both - night driving is so much better with this album on. Sad he never got to know how influential and loved his music would become.
An immaculate, concise, beautiful record that is elegant in its simplicity. So glad that this album exists.
bleak, beautiful, deserving of a spot on here. Familiar with Pink Moon from films but never idetified it. Haunting especially knowing the struggles Drake had. 100% on my listen again - ideally while looking out a window lost in thought. It’s Jose Gonzalez covering Radiohead.
Pink pink pink pink pink moon.
One of the greatest singer-songwriter albums of all time. His magnum opus, not a miss here. 10/10
Fantastic album. I wish he’d lived longer.
Another All-timer. 5 *'s
This is an all time album for me. Effortless whimsy and beautiful song writting. Makes me feel at ease for the full 28 minutes and has a lot of nostalgia along with it. Feels like a sleep drive in the country at night which is probably why volkswagen used it in their ads all those years ago. This is a really great album and Nick was gone far too soon. RIP Nick Drake. I'm on my 3rd listen through today, and it's just magic from top to bottom. Horn is such a beautiful guitar melody.
The ultimate rainy day record. Every song is beautiful and sad. None outstays its welcome.
Brilliant
a wonderful listen!
Very intimate album with rich guitar sounds and vocals!
Truly a masterpiece. One of my favorite albums. Favorite Track: Road
Brilliant from start to finish and over way too quickly--perhaps a fitting analogy for the man himself.
Beautiful album, only knew the title track but love it.
the goat!
Perfect
I mean, not fair. I love this record.
Perfect just being him and his guitar (and piano). Maintains a complete and focused ambiance throughout.
enjoyed this one a lot! great sound
How does one capture the beauty of the first rays of moonshine breaking through the leaves? How does one capture the solitude of a lone tree on a hill? How does one encapsulate in music that slowly creeping feeling of jotting all your feelings onto paper, in a dark room near the only light source in sight, that feeling somewhere between comfort, melancholy and cosmic grandness that clenches all your guts at once? How does one not only achieve this, but do it so consistently across 33 minutes?
Now this is my era and I love this record I remember buying it
Nice surprise! Nixk has an excellent guitar with captivating melodies and lyrics. Definitely will be an album I will be returning to many times
I feel very pastel
9/10…singer songwriter / folk
One of my favorite albums of all time. Incredible guitar work and a voice that just floats.
Great album, a little depressing to listen to for a birthday party
Never heard of this guy before, great stuff
ok very excited for this as I only discovered pink moon recently wow I need this on vinyl asap
A truly beautiful album. Absolutely fantastic
One of the most hauntingly beautiful things I have ever heard.
Loved this
Very tender and beautiful.
Some albums carry a spirit — subtle, stirring — that seeps into your soul and lingers. This is one of them, best heard on a vintage stereo on a cold, rain-soaked afternoon in late autumn , when the world slows and the music fills the space. So yes I love this album.
Sparse, hushed and melancholic, intimate. This is a beautifully written and performed record.
This is an outstanding record.
My other reviews of Nick Drake are that I need to listen to more Nick Drake. And this record, more than the others, is just proof of that. It's excellent, and I need to listen to it more. This one was my favorite. It's a short album, but I'm not sure it would be better if it was longer.
Nick Drake was capable of breathtaking simplicity, generating a great deal of emotional energy simply through finger picking a series of smart chord structures and gently singing. There is not a single bell or whistle on this record, the songwriting and lyricism is left to speak for itself. Drake doesn’t have to hide behind anything because there is a seriousness and depth to his music which carries the whole production. You think you’ve got a handle on his performance, his rhythm, then he produces something as simple and thought provoking as Horn. The space in between the notes are as profound as the music itself. Country to popular belief it’s not a dour album either. Listen to the hopeful and life affirming choruses of Things Behind the Sun which counterbalance the creeping melancholy of the verses. Much has been made of Nick Drake’s dislike of the dense production and additional instrumentation on Bryter Layter and clearly that preference has been addressed here. I personally admire both modes equally but concede that Pink Moon is a perfect record and am glad it has that point of difference with it’s predecessor. A one in a million talent.
Simple, sparse, maybe a little under-thought but that makes it raw. An exceptional example of a person and a guitar making a remarkable sound.
Another fantastic album. Must've been a good time to get this album and then Bridge Over Troubled Water the next day.
I'm feeling a bit sheepish for giving Jane's Addiction Ritual De Lo Habitual a 5, having this album come next and really appreciating what a 5 should be. Such a brilliant album. The insane guitar work, the lyrics, the voice, the whole package.
Excellent album. Will listen to it again and again and again. Hopefully buy on vinyl as well
Really loved this. Had only listened to the title track before and the rest were great too. Simpsons: Yes
This was the Nick Drake album I already knew prior to the album list, and it's great.
I like Nick Drake a lot.
Simply put: Extraordinarily beautiful and lush to an exquisite level, while simultaneously being drop-dead devastating. ..And you can listen to it twice in an hour? You’ll need that long to digest the album’s spectacular cover alone. 5 stars, 9+/10
Voce armonika
Very pretty and very sad. Esp love place to be.
Amazing album, listened before top 50 album of all time. One of the most beautifully haunting albums ever made RIP Nick Drake
AMAZING. This was a surreal experience and it sounded more like a soundtrack to my life more than an actual album. I loved it and will definitely be returning to this project 👍
Pure, real pure beauty!
I love this shit. It's so genius.
Weer Nick Drake. Weer vijf sterren.
Extraordinary album. Glad to come across it.
My favorite Nick Drake.
Cooles Album.
Very nive, somewhat melancolic vibes
One of the greatest albums ever made.
What a beautiful and hearbreaking final album for Nick Drake. He's all alone here and that's where his music shines. Even on the instrumentals you can feel what Nick Drake is feeling. And there's a lot of songs here that just feel deeply familiar yet you can't quite place where you know it from. Love this album
Love this album so ethereal and mellow but melancholic too
Gorgeous plucking on Pink Moon. It’s stripped down to all you really need and that’s Nick Drake, his thoughtful lyrics and his acoustic guitar. Beautiful album 5 stars
really really liked it
Never listend to this person and did not even know they existed. This record is a beautiful, warm embrace and I can already say it will be one of my favorite albums (outside the generator). I’ve listened to maybe only 15 records so far on the generator and gave a lot of 3 stars to records and was already wondering when / if I‘d ever come across anything that would instantly make me love it and make me dish out 5 stars because I feel like I’m hard to amaze and maybe overcritical. But Nick Drake… wow. This is just beautiful to listen to. It’s melancholic but not too much to bear. Just perfectly hit my sweet spot. A gem, a truly marvelous record.
Makes me cri
A really nice indie album, i will definitely listen to it again
Fabulous. I knew a few of the songs. But had always drifted yo van Morrison. It was fabulous.
Nick Drake's last masterpiece before his very untimely death. The music is dramatically stripped down to mostly just Drake and his guitar (and one piano overdub). What's remarkable is the sound quality. These two basic elements completely dominate the room and your head space. Close your eyes and you can imagine sitting on the ground in a recording studio while he plays atop a bar stool. At the same time, it's so stripped back that it almost ceases to exist. It's like watching an ant very close up. It's something you could easily ignore but it becomes fascinating and fully engaging when viewed close up. Much has been made about the depression that Nick Drake experienced. Given his early death and poor album sales, it's easy to imagine a tortured soul in these tracks. But I don't think so. This music is therapy and expression, for Drake and for so many of his listeners, even decades later when the music is so much more appreciated.
Acoustic open tuning masterpiece, love nick drake
Ordinarily this style of a folk singer accompanied only by an acoustic guitar doesn't do much for me, but Nick Drake somehow made his music so moving in a way that, for me, nobody else can Drake comes up with all these interesting little guitar parts that none of his contemporaries would dare try (that I know of anyway), like Road (like the vocal harmonies on that one too) and Know. I think this is sparse and understated done at it's absolute best The lack of any backing band on this compared to his previous album really emphasised the lonely and hollow atmosphere. The single piano accompaniment on the title track is so simple but it's so memorable. His vocals are sort of in a way that adds to that too. Despite the forlorn and sorrowful tone, it's also a strangely soothing listen A folk classic Highlights: Pink Moon, Road, Know, Horn
Emotional, deep, poetic, beautiful
Along with albums like Tapestry and Astral Weeks, this album is powerfully evocative of my childhood when I used to fall asleep on the stairs listening to the talk and music coming from my parents' dinner parties. Still makes me feel so much indescribable emotion. I had always assumed that this was Nick Drake's first album as it bears all the hallmarks of being a first album peak, starting with something simple and beautiful that then gets corrupted with additional instrumentation and unnecessary complexity. I love that he actually worked the other way and strived to achieve this stripped down perfection.
My mum can't listen to this album, all she can hear is Nick Drake's pain. It's the most bleak and melancholic of a trilogy of albums that can all be bleak and melancholic, yet it still breezes by. There's a reason the tortured artist is such a common trope, and this records sits along the likes of Vincent van Gogh as to why.
Hello darkness, my old friend
So potent and beautiful
Pink Moon is a beautiful song. Place to Be is another great song. He has a haunting voice. Probably because he had so little output compared to so many singer-songwriters, but Nick Drake is tragically underrated. The songs are so short they really leave me wanting more at the end. This is a beautiful album, an album full of these little beautiful clouds that dissipate as soon as you try to grab hold of them. I'm surprised Zach Braff hasn't scored one of his movies with just this album. It feels like something is going on with the guitar on Know, almost like the strings weren't quite tight. From the Morning is such a nice way to end the album. It's just an album of Nick Drake singing and playing guitar. I wish there was more, more songs, longer songs, something.
I love all 3 of Nick Drake’s albums, perhaps I love Pink Moon the most but perhaps that’s Five Leaves Left… There seems to be some kind of wisdom in here which belies his youth. I particularly enjoy the blend of folk styles and the expressive guitar playing. His voice and vocal phrasing is instantly recognisable and whilst some of these songs are very melancholic I find the whole effect to be a balm. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
❤️
This sounds like it was recorded in 2003
Great
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Short and sweet. These are the albums I signed up for!
Wow. I feel like a real idiot. I have heard of Nick Drake a few times over the years. Told myself I'd give it a try. Then confused Nick Drake with Nick Cave... Which don't get me wrong, I can get down with some Nick Cave. But I have missed out on years of this?? All because my brain wouldn't remember "Drake"... 5/5
Love how this is kept so raw. Just vocals and acoustic guitar but while it plays, you hear the whole orchestra and see the whole spectrum of the human experience. This album is very beautiful and immediately resonates with me. Great rhythmic playing and interesting chord progressions, understated but rich vocal timbre.
This is one of those albums I knew would be on the list prior to starting it. Universally lauded as one of the greatest albums of all time, at least in online music circles. I'm extremely familiar with this album, I've heard it many times through and I can heartidly say I agree with the praise. This is the second Nick Drake album on this list I've reacted to so far (36 total) so I know my score will probably reflect that a bit. I like this one a lot, but it wouldn't be right if I didn't give it a detailed listen with notes like every other album. Pink Moon Classic singer-songwriter song. People have been trying to emulate the magic of this song for decades most failing along the way. The odd inflections, the intimate delivery and the mystical lyrics over a calming acoustic guitar builds a radiant atmosphere. The piano is beautiful too, and comes in at the exact right time. I really like how short it is, honestly the briefness enhances the track for me. One of the greatest of its genre. 5/5 Place to Be There's a beautiful calmness to the tracks on the album. The mellow tranquility especially comes across on this track. The groundedness in his voice alongside the rustic guitar melody creates an earthiness that creates a sense of safety within the music. Melancholic lyrics without being too dramatic. Beautiful. 5/5 Road Melodic and atmospheric. I love how you can hear every stroke and pinch of the guitar. Small imperfections that add a lot of soul and personality to the track. The lyrics add up to something strangely poetic. Mantra-like. Great. 4.5/5 Which Will Reflective sounding guitar. His delivery is so unique it's impossible to imitate with such earnestness and charm. A cozy and warm sound. Sounds like the final night before the end of summer. Fantastic. 5/5 Horn The opening guitar almost has a classical sound to it. A cute little melody which ends up being a pleasant listen. 4/5 Things Behind the Sun I feel a lot of modern singer-songwriters base their entire sound on the guitar in this track. The ultimate transitional song. It's like the feeling of waiting to arrive somewhere, being between two places. Autumn vibes. Great. 4.5/5 Know Repetition adds a cleansing element to the track. Doesn't really go anywhere. Still pleasant. 3.5/5 Parasite Sad and emotive lyrics play out a vivid story. Extremely depressing, feels personal and real. It present a devastating self image, and feels like it takes inspiration from real issues faced by the author. Devastating. 5/5 Free Ride There's a little bit of a shift in energy from the previous song. Feels lighter and less loaded while still having undertones of sadness underneath. Really like the progression in the chorus. Great. 4.5/5 Harvest Breed There's a sense og melancholy in the guitar. The lyrics feel like a part of a poem. Wish it stayed on a little longer, has the potential to evolve, but the short length of the song prevents that. Still good. 4/5 From the Morning My favourite from the album. Feels accepting and uplifting. I really enjoy the more positive outlook after a very downturned and sad album. A really refreshing, earnest little track that leaves an impact everytime I hear it. Has a nostalgic and reflective feel to it which is carried on top of the beautiful little guitar melody. Sells the idea that there's a light at the end of the tunnel, and that one has to appreciate beauty and wonder even during bad times. That this was one of his last recorded songs before tragically passing also adds to the feel of the song. Hope he found beauty and peace in his final moments. Fantastic. 5/5 I always forget how enigmatic and cryptic a lot of the lyrics are on this thing. Even if it's difficult to understand at times I think the songs really get their intent across through atmosphere, delivery and feel. It's both uplifiting and depressing, and also extremely calming and warm even when you feel how moody and weighted certain elements feel. Does all it should and more. A magnificent series of songs, and an absolute tragedy that we never got to hear another project from him again, and that he never saw the success he deserved. 4.5/5 Fave track. From the Morning Last fave track. Know
I don't go more than a few months without giving this album a spin, perfect beautiful acoustic music. Hard to think of many better ways to spend half an hour.
Pure acoustic guitar Bliss.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
First of all. Wow. I have nothing but praise for this one. To get this started, I have read about Nick Drake and his story is very tragic, he made some great stuff and it is a shame no one noticed until after his story was over. This is a haunting and beautiful album, the music feels and sounds very raw, the instrumentation only containing a sparse acoustic guitar creates an atmosphere perfect for an album like this, it is underlined with sadness but contains small pockets of joy, this is an introspective, melancholic, and gentle album which comes together in a perfectly wrapped package of an album, it is a short 28 minutes, and uses every minute exceptionally well, it doesn’t overstay its welcome, and it doesn’t leave me feeling like it should have been longer. It doesn’t get better than an album like this. Rating: Masterpiece (Strong ☆☆☆☆☆) Favorite Tracks: Pink Moon, Place To Be, Which Will, Know, and Free Ride.
I was in the absolute worst possible mood for this album to pop up. I'd heard of Nick Drake, but never (knowingly) listened to him. Turns out, I'd heard the title track in a VW commercial back in 1999. Anyway, given my mood, and the blurb about the album in Apple Music, I was prepared to have an awful time of it. But dammit if this album didn't win me over. And keep winning me over for its entire 28 minutes. 5 stars.
Make me feel some type of way. Favourite Songs: Pink Moon, Place to Be, Things Behind the Sun, Parasite, From the Morning. Least Favourite Songs: Know.
YOOO
so talented he died way too young. SO MUCH potential RIP Nick Drake. Definitely his masterpiece although I also love his other albums just as much.
another BANGER from this guy
Sometimes the simplest forms of art are also the most beautiful.
A flawless album that provides an unparalleled feeling of warmth, comfort, and relaxation. Lovely poetry and voice, attached to some of the most perfectly recorded guitars and keys that you could ever hear. Amazing that the entire 30 min runtime is so captivating with so few parts holding it together. No standout tracks as it is all great.
Pink Moon is so good that I can’t even begin to write a review that does it justice. After Five Leaves Left came up on the generator last year, Nick Drake rapidly became one of my favourite artists. I’d heard his music before from Mum and Dad, but when sitting down and giving his music my full attention, I was struck by his poetic lyrics, unique folk guitar style, and incredible songwriting despite his troubled life and short music career. Pink Moon is perhaps Nick’s magnum opus - his final album, written and recorded at a time when he’d all but given up. It’s very barebones; gone are the drums from Bryter Layer or the strings from Five Leaves Left. Just Nick and his guitar. It’s moving, warm, delicate, and melancholy. Learning Nick’s songs on the guitar only grew my appreciation of them. From the intricate finger picking patterns in Parasite, to the unconventional tuning throughout the album, reconstructing his songs myself continues to be a rewarding challenge. He plays his own way, unlike anyone else. And he does all that whilst singing some of the most beautiful and profound lyrics ever written? Nick Drake was a genius.
Don't really want to go on too much about this album or Nick as a musician or as a person but this is one of my favourite albums by one of my favourite people and I only had to listen to 1078 albums to get to it!! 11 short acoustic tracks played beautifully and simply. It takes you from a hopeful beginning through to words that are inscribed on his headstone. And kind of in the middle is surely one of the greatest songs ever written. So there, I ended up going on too much after all.
This, I don't know exactly what is has that calms me. 9.
I really enjoyed this project. While listening I did some reading on his Drake's life and frankly put a damper on what would have been a magical first listening experience. His voice is nothing special, other than it perfectly suiting the nothing but short of impeccable instrumentation.
Loved this - very chill, consumable and enchanting
Beautiful.
Sometimes it takes you 50 years to find your favourite album. I’m so glad I’m still here to discover this one. It makes me sad. Nick Drake died too young and didn’t understand how much he influenced people’s joy.
This is an absolute 5. One of my favorite albums ever. A little jewel box of an album. 28 minutes! Twenty-eight minutes!! So much warmth and depth. I just love it.
Great album. So chill.
8,73
Another surprising album! I had no clue what to expect going into it based off of the album cover. This album was the perfect length and vibe. So calm and chill. Perfect album to unwind to before bed.
I've listened to this album countless times but I'll review anyway Pink Moon - 5/5 Place To Be - 5/5 Road - 5/5 Which Will - 4/5 Horn - no rating Things Behind The Sun - 5/5 Know - 3/5 Parasite - 5/5 Free Ride - 5/5 Harvest Breed - 3/5 From The Morning - 5/5 Average score: 4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Bryer Later is still my fav of all his releases, but I still hold this near and dear to my heart
Stunning, timeless, absolutely enchanting. A spare 28 minutes of barely-there music that somehow wrings every bit of emotion out of six strings and a whispery voice. The best thing I can compare this record to is a Salinger short story. It seems so simple, but can break your heart because it’s excruciatingly sad and beautiful in equal measure. You wish it were longer, but it’s exactly how long it should be. Anyway, wish you were still around Nick.
Such a beautiful and tragic album. I never say this… but I wish it was longer.
Unrivaled. Nick, why did you leave us?
Seems like it will get better the more you listen to it. Remember this one
Lovely.
Overall: 9/10 The beauty of simplicity is displayed on this gorgeously minimalistic folk album. I'd already gotten Bryter Layter earlier in the generator and thought it was really good but I felt like something was missing. As it turns out, nothing was missing at all...Nick just needed to pick up his guitar and let the songs speak for themselves. He was such a talented guitar player and he makes these songs sound so rich and full. My favourite folk album I've gotten so far. Fav Song: Free Ride Least Fav Song: Horn
2025-01-28...
A wonderful quiet acoustic album with an excellent singer, I don’t really have much else to say except I’ll listen again
Rly nice and chill
An absolute all time classic! Nick Drake is way up there on the list of artists that just died way too soon. This album is a masterpiece and a beautiful end cap on his discography. But we can only imagine the beautiful albums he would have been able to write with a few more years. If I own it on vinyl it is usually going to get at least a 4, this however is an instant 5 star for me. Great album!
Incredible all around. I had never heard any of his music before this, feels super modern.
Nick Drake's soft and moody vocals, paired with the sparse instrumentation (Drake on guitar; also piano on the title track) create a dreamy atmosphere of thoughtful calm. For a short 28 minutes, you are transported from wherever you are, to sitting in a field beneath a wistful Pink Moon. Absolutely Essential.
A revelation! I’d only ever heard “One of these things first” from his other album on a compilation but didn’t know until I heard the voice. I think was hoping each successive song was longer. The stripped down sounds of just voice and guitar made the songs so much more interesting and intense. Amazing. I will be looking for this album.
This is really good. I don’t have anything to say though
Nick Drake is one of the best. This album is just so well made and combines his beautiful voice, masterful songwriting and incredible guitar.
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE LBUMS EVER. Makes me want celestial seasonings tension tamer tea... was top 1% nick drake listener on airbuds last week...calming and nostalgic.
Back in the late 1990s, Amazon used to allow users to create publicly posted recommendation lists of their favorite albums, books, films and I recall seeing the surrealistic and iconic cover art for Nick Drake's Pink Moon on quite a few. It was before Gilmore Girls name dropped the album as a way for Rory to pretend to have common interests with her crush, Season one Dean (before Supernatural turned him into Sam), but the title track had already been featured on a Volkswagen advertisement. This third, and final, album from Nick Drake was my adolescent introduction to the artist, and its beautifully melancholic and unaccompanied acoustic guitar made it challenging for me to appreciate his earlier Chamber folk albums that sounded a bit busy with their background singers and orchestral backdrops. Every single song on "Pink Moon" is timeless and engaging. Rather romantically associated with Nick Drake's depression and death, although the album was actually released to critical indifference and hostility two years before he joined the "26 club," most contemporary critics and fans see Pink Moon as a suicide note of elegiac beauty. But, there is joy here that can't be overshadowed by his overdose.
Really pleasant listen. Very nice sound, liked his voice, very, very nice listen on a snowy winter day. Might give it a 5, at the moment it’s a 4 cause I was listening to it while having an awful run on a treadmill so we’ll see how I feel in the morning. Really nice album sad he only got recognized once he was dead.
1 of my faves
After the autumnal Chamber-Folk of Five Leaves Left, and the more upbeat Folk-Jazz of Bryter Later, Drake recorded this, his third and final album. Whereas the previous two albums had full arrangements, Pink Moon is chillingly sparse. Just his beautifully fragile voice, nimble acoustic guitar playing and 11 (mainly) brief songs. It's the sort of record best played alone, in the dark, at some ungodly hour like 3am. The mood is stark, surreal and sombre, sparingly beautiful and perfectly captures a 'dark night of the soul', where ghouls lurk in the shadows of yesterday. The lyrics are as cryptic as ever but to be honest, if they were more cogent, they probably wouldn't work. As they are, inspired by 19th century poets, they're perfect: deep, vague, reflective, economical and seamlessly poetic. He typically uses nature and objects to form a coded message that's prevelant in all his work. His previous two albums ended with titles referencing days of the week ('Saturday Sun' and 'Sunday') so the moon of 'Pink Moon' may well be a reference to Monday, which gives weight to this being the third album in a trilogy. His incredible guitar playing is crisp, clear and concise, utilises alternate tunings, deploying trance like rhythm patterns, often alternating these within the same song. With no other instruments, it's much more apparent what a gifted player he was. Meanwhile Drake's delicate vocal delivery hovers like woven honey (detached from time, usually behind the beat) in a manner that's quietly assured yet hauntingly so, wearily resigned but never morbid. His voice, guitar, words and melody work together to create an atmosphere that is intense and personal. He's got a message yet all the while he hides from you ('Things Behind The Sun'). It's a perfect, timeless record that's ultimately born of hope, albeit shrouded in darkness. When the final track ('From the Morning') comes on, I swear I can visualise the sun rising and the sound of birdsong. The soul newly reborn, the trials and tribulations of yesterday washed away, and with it a fresh day of new hope and light:- "and now rise, and we are everywhere". Coincidentally, this album came up for review on the first of January. Anyway, the whole 28 minutes is consistently and brilliantly captivating. Personal faves are 'Road', 'Which Will', 'Things Behind The Sun', 'Parasite', and the aforementioned 'From The Morning'. And to cap it all off, the surreal, dreamlike cover artwork is perfect to stare at while the turntable spins and reveals the rewarding textures within this uncanny record.
A perfect soothing accompaniment to my New Year hangover. Enjoyed this a lot.
4.5 I rated Bryter Layter a 4 I think which I felt was undercooking it, but here I almost leaned to the same. Similar album this one but more focussed on sole acoustic. Pink Moon one of the best openers, and the rest really solid songs. Great to have on in the background in almost every occasion. I feel a combined best of between this and Bryter Later would be creeping towards the 5.0 zone.
The only album i'll ever complain about being too short. Every song is perfect and beautiful. best songs: road, pink moon, place to be, which will, parasite
So minimalist it gets down to what the core of a song should be.
Favorite Nick Drake album. First heard this in my 20s and very influential for me.
Slept on this for years. Better late than never. Beautiful and brilliant.
Frábær eins og alltaf. Nikki Dreki klikkar aldrei
Fullkomin aðfangadagsplata.
Nick Drake, this was a good day.
Nice! First time I heard this album and I will most certainly add it to my library.
Imagine a drive in a camper along the coast of California in late summer. This is what you'd play
Just love Nick Drake’s music. His songs are so well crafted. Just enough and never too much. Perfectly edited. I like him more and more.
The first listen I had of this, maybe it was my mood and I didn't get it, or I wasn't listening intently enough, but on the second listen I discovered a deep seam of feeling and beauty in the songs which makes his untimely passing all the more tragic. Some beautiful songs and poignant lyrics.
My review is just a copy past of 5 Leaves Left as the albums are near indistinguishable... I have a Nick Drake greatest hits so I know a few of these songs very well and its a lovely melodic listen. I had not realised what a troubled and shortened life he had.
This album has a fragile beauty that I love. Easy 5.
Pink Moon feels less like an album and more like being quietly allowed into someone’s inner world. The first time I heard it, it stopped me in a way very few records ever have. There is no attempt to impress, no layering, no protection, just voice, guitar, and a stark honesty that feels almost intrusive, like you are hearing something you were not meant to overhear. It demands attention not by force, but by vulnerability, and once it has you, it does not let go. What makes it hit so hard for me is how closely it mirrors those moments when everything is stripped back and you are left alone with your thoughts. The songs are short, fragile, and unfinished in a way that feels deliberate, as if saying anything more would dilute the truth. Nick Drake’s voice sounds weary but precise, calm but heavy with feeling, and his guitar playing feels like a nervous system rather than accompaniment. Tracks like “Things Behind the Sun” and “Which Will” do not try to resolve anything, they simply exist with the weight of not knowing, which is exactly why they feel so real. By the time the title track arrives, it feels less like a finale and more like a quiet closing of the door. Pink Moon leaves a silence behind it that feels intentional, necessary, and deeply affecting. For me, it is an album I return to when words are hard to find, when everything feels small and close, when I need something that understands without explaining. It is perfect not because it is polished or expansive, but because it is honest in a way that feels almost unbearably human.
nice
why do the most depressed people make the best music
I love how stripped down this album is — for the most part it's just Drake and his guitar. And there are some great riffs, like on "Free Ride." I just wish there was a bit more musical variety. This is a great album, but of the 3 Nick Drake albums, it's my second favorite (Five Leaves Left being my favorite). This one is famous for "Pink Moon," but there are too many other songs on the album that sound similar to it. Lyrically it's great, though it's a really sad window into Drake's declining mental health at the time. 4.5/5 (I'll give it a 5/5 since I can't do half stars because why not)
Beautiful, haunting album.
Nostalgie. Cool het weer te horen.
One of my favorite albums. When I first heard this at thirteen, it like changed how I viewed music. One of the first underground artists I first heard and it just seemed to link up with how I was feeling. I still listen to this album a lot and always enjoy it.
It's about time I got another Nick Drake album. I had to wait about 400 albums to get one and now almost 500 more to get this one. At least I won't have to wait long to get his other album. Like all of his work, this is just beautiful through and through. Simple acoustic guitar and his soft voice, with just a hint of piano. I just do not get how little attention this or Nick Drake got in his lifetime. Folk and soft playing was not new in 1972. It might have even been at its heights then. Hard for me to single out any song because I love them all. But if I have to, it would be the title track (probably the song that led me to discover him), Place to Be (continues the breezy, peaceful feeling from the title track), Which Will (love the hammer ons and pull offs in the guitar work), Horn (love the high fret work), Know (more hammer ons and pull offs and sweet vocals), and Parasite (great energy). Fantastic album.
Such tragedy. The final of his three albums, with all three on the 1001. With the exception of a piano overdub in the track Pink Moon, entirely consists of his outstanding acoustic guitar playing and his plaintive voice. The production quality makes you feel like you're sitting right next to him as he recorded on those two late nights (crazy that this masterpiece was recorded in two late-night sessions). An absolutely captivating album. Favorite tracks: Pink Moon (beautiful iconic track), Road (love the guitar line), Which Will (made me pull out my acoustic guitar and look up the tab), Horn (simple yet beautiful instrumental interlude), Things Behind the Sun (again, the guitar part is fantastic - listen to the clarity of his playing...absolutely beautiful), Parasite (love the chord progression), From the Morning (surprisingly upbeat and hopeful final song of his final album). Perfect melancholic masterpiece.
Ogromne zaskoczenie. Thx Nick for a free ride. 4,5/5
Amazing album, how Nick Drake was not more appreciated in his time is beyond me
Nice little album by a nice little singer who inspired thousands of shitty imitators, so he might be guilty of war crimes.
Incredible. Has grown on me over the years. I take it with me, wherever I go now. The guitar playing is sublime.
This is my favorite of his album. Perfectly mellow and chill. Just a lovely listen.
4.5/5
I have listened to this album more times that I can count. As far as folk rock goes, it really doesn't get any better than this in my (and many other's) opinion. The album wastes no time in getting started. We are dropped right into an acoustic strum of the titular track with Drake's breathy falsetto floating above. A couple of tasteful key strokes add depth through the mid-section. Immediately sets the tone of a sad smile that persists throughout. Honestly, on an individual track basis, I don't have a whole lot to say, but as a complete album this one always leaves an impression on me. There is something to the delivery that is passionately beautiful and resonates. The songs are so crisp and lightweight in structure I never mind basking in them. But even if the songs and album are short, they come laden with nuanced emotion. We are only so lucky that we were able to enjoy these songs at the expense of their author.
This album is so great. I wasn't sure I would be up for another one so close to the last, but I was hooked on the first song. Mesmerizing.
Everything stripped away but voice and guitar (save the stray piano). A singular album by a singular artist. I infer strings base and drums on some songs. That's part of the beauty of great music and all art really. Leaving space for the listener/viewer - and visions abound. The perfect album for today - election day '24. An album that transports you somewhere outside of time and space. Something we can all use.
★★★★★★
i don’t know if i should give this album 4 or 5 stars. it’s incredible but at the same time i feel like it’s never really convinced me / i’ve never felt it that deeply. nonetheless it’s still great
Transcends time, a timeless sound. Found this a while ago and fell in love with the album.
Nick Drake's Pink Moon is a tragic testament to a talent that never saw its own success. I first encountered Drake’s music in 1999 when “Pink Moon” featured in a Volkswagen commercial, more than 25 years after his passing. Working at a music store at the time, I began receiving inquiries about the song, prompting me to explore his work. Years later, I still can’t choose a favorite among his three albums; it always depends on whether I’m in the mood for the intimacy of Pink Moon or the richer arrangements of his other two records. Each album is exceptional and deserves repeated listening. On Pink Moon, Nick’s drop-tuned acoustic guitars resonate with warmth and depth. The stripped-down production creates an intimate atmosphere, as if you’re sharing a quiet moment in a cabin—only the absence of a crackling fire reminds you that it’s just music, although the tape hiss makes for a worthy substitute. His haunting voice, soft yet expressive, could make even the simplest lyrics feel profoundly moving. Listening with a good pair of headphones enhances this immersive experience. With each listen, Pink Moon has climbed higher on my list of all-time favorites. It’s an album that gradually embeds itself in your musical consciousness. For me, it’s an easy 5 out of 5.
I love your music, Nick Drake. Rest in peace.
Awesome
Close contender for my favourite album ever
Very good. One of the classic folk records. I'm sure if I learned more about Nick Drake I'd appreciate this even more.
Mellow acoustic. Great singer songwriter.
Couldn't have been better timing getting this one on a crisp fall morning on my way to hike. I've heard the song Pink Moon but nothing else from this before now. Oddly melancholy and joyful at the same time. Beautiful guitar work and voice.
The thing that makes this album so great is that I can never tell if it's meant to be happy or sad. Some songs are uplifting like "pink moon" and "from the morning. But one thing every song on this album has is an overall sense of melancholy, throughout every track. It's clear that his mental space had a huge influence on how this turned out, and it creates such a powerful emotive feeling for the listener, without having any flashy instruments or vocal gymnastics. That being said, the guitar work is incredible on this album. This album probably has my favourite guitar out of any piece of music honestly. His lyrics are sometimes contemplative, other times downright devastating, making this overall such a meaningful album, even after listening countless times. Favourite song: Place to be
I’ve listened to Nick Drake before and really liked him, but didn’t look into his story before getting this album. I wish he had stayed with us longer to see what he could have achieved. Lovely, bare, timeless. Now we rise And we are everywhere
Recommendation: listen to this one in the woods.
Simply a beautiful, beautiful album. So stripped back but this just adds to the beauty of the album and considering his state of mind at the time it just makes it more impressive. I’m really liking listening to Nick Drake and I’m just annoyed its taken my until nearly 50 years old to discover this!
One of my all time faves. And dropping in fall? Makes me think of peaceful New England fall days, writing, and wishing I could play the guitar.
I think I unfairly dismissed Nick Drake's landmark folk release 'Pink Moon' upon first hearing it years back. Everything about it was just so...**small** - be it the intimate recording, limited sonic palate, repetitive and simplistic songwriting, hushed vocals, or even less than thirty-minute runtime. I find it juxtaposes its colorful, whimsical, and downright intangible album art in many ways. Though I've known, for years, that I HAD to relisten this thing eventually. And before even hitting play, I knew I would get more out of it now, considering the headspace I'm in. This album **is** small, evoking no more than the image of a directionless man sitting under a tree at dawn with his acoustic guitar - rhyming up whatever comes to his head. It's a raw record in that sense. And yeah it's pretty damn sad too. You can interpret a "Pink Moon" however you like but the idea of this all-encompassing entity inevitably "getting" everyone regardless of class is quite frightening...on paper. But Nick's way of delivering this "news" makes it seem more sad than scary, with him sounding almost unbothered by it. Maybe "unbothered" isn't the right way of putting it - a song like 'Things Behind The Sun' sort of builds on this idea of an ever-looming presence that facilitates human life's endless cycle of despair, and here, Nick leans into this notion that there's nothing that can be done about it. In the second half, Nick sort of goes into this idea of trying to connect with others because, ultimately, our only real purpose is to exist for those who care about and will remember us. 'Harvest Breed' has Drake falling through his years trying to form any sort of connection, regardless of whether it's superfluous or not (as a song like 'Free Ride' indicates). 'Parasite' may be the most tragic song here - it's one thing to want to be ignored, like a bug, but parasites aren't often ignored but rather loathed and despised - despite being a part of nature themselves. Parasites are the lowest of the low, having to cling onto and leech off their host's resources just to survive. Drake's depression was no secret, especially since he would go on to overdose and pass away from anti-depressants after this album was released. I'd say a song like this offers the most striking image of that. I'm almost thankful that this album closes on a hopeful note, with Nick essentially implying that the only thing that's "real" is the nature around us and that the life we choose to live is nothing but a game we choose to participate in every morning. There's something so pure about the way he implores the listener to see the world in its purest form through nature - it's a tear-jerking conclusion to both the record and his career. While this song makes me sad that Nick never got to overcome his struggles, it's a very strong message to leave the world with. Oh yeah, the music and singing are pretty great too - they form a tight, warm atmosphere that perfectly complements the writing, which is what ultimately gripped me this time around. Without a doubt, it's a very impactful record for many, and one I'll be sure to revisit periodically just because of how pure it is.
This right here is one of the greatest Singer-Songwriter and Folk albums ever created. Few albums can make me feel this suicidal while envoking a love for life at the same time. It's simply beautiful throughout with every moment being simple but dense and deeply emotional. I don't take this title lightly but this is simply a perfect album from start to finish. As of right now this is one of only 58 albums that I honour with a 10 (at ~1000 albums, only 6% of my albums are 10s). The story behind this album and Nick Drake's life at and after this time is tragic but this album just encapsulates everything he felt perfectly and makes his OD somehow relatable. This thing makes me so sad... but in the best way possible. The album starts with the legendary title track 'Pink Moon', a perfect example of his Contemporary Folk style which stands in strong contrast to his previous two album which had very lush arrangements. This is just him, a piano and his guitar with incredible lyrics and songwriting, both performed in the most emotional way possible. It is haunting but beautiful, sad but soothing, calm but atmospheric. Just perfect with every sense of the word. With the second song it's even less instruments as the piano won't appear again but that doesn't stop the songs from being deeply emotional. 'Place to Be' plays with lyrics that feel even more relatable which results in it being even sadder. It feels romantic and full of love but still dark and mysterious. It's depressive but somehow in a beautiful way. Just perfect... 'Road' feels even more existential and it's obviously about decisions in life and while it doesn't make feel as done with myself like the previous two songs did, it's still an incredible song through and through. The melodic 'Which Will' has some of the best vocal performances on the album and the result is simply incredible. The songwriting is diverse and makes the entire song interesting and his technical guitar playing just adds to the weird place this song is in. It's got a sparkle of hope inside but it cannot escape from the darkness of its creator. Stunning song and perfectly executed in every way possible. The instrumental and short 'Horn' can create a ton of emotions even without any lyrics or vocals on it. It's calm and ambient but still full of magical moments and deep emotions within. Simply an incredible instrumental. The albums first side already closes with 'Things Behind the Sun', a track that is absolute perfection. The lyrics are just pure poetry, the vocals are done in the best and most depressive way possible and the short build up of hope that is ruined in the way that it should've. Absolutely amazing song and one of the best ever. Depressive, romantic, lonely and nocturnal. Best possible songwriting is achieved here and it's performed perfectly. The slight Acoustic Blues of 'Know' starts off the second half of the album with a weird but haunting song that is hypnotic with its simplicity and full of incredible moments even if the repetition does feel a little annoying towards the end but he stops it right when its enough. Incredible but one of the "weaker" songs on the album. And right from the weakest to the strongest. At least I think that 'Parasite' is the albums best song. It is intricate and full of emotional hitting lyrics that feel weirdly relatable and keep spiraling deeper and deeper into more and more depressive and hypnotic songwriting. Everything about this is perfect, it's hard to even put it into words. It makes you feel small and the longer it plays, the smaller you feel until it crushes you. 'Free Ride' has a beautiful melody and a chorus that is simply wonderful. The vocals are amazing and the way he sings the chorus feels like a great mix between magical and calm that I am just enchanted by the song and its writing. Another perfect song, again. And the beauty keeps going with 'Harvest Breed', a song that is incredibly simply even with the lyrics but they are delivered in such a majestic and beautiful way that you can only love it because of that. It's such a wonderful moment on the album but I wished that it was longer which would've made it perfect. The album sadly already closes with 'From the Morning', a song that plays with pieces of hope but it keeps it behind a closed wall and that wall is a beautiful song that is just a perfect finale to this incredible and one of a kind album. This is simply perfection. favourites: Parasite, Things Behind the Sun, Place to Be, From the Morning, Pink Moon, Free Ride, Which Will least favourites: NONE (if I had to choose one, it'd be 'Know') Rating: light 10 https://rateyourmusic.com/~Emil_ph for more ratings, reviews and takes
