Reviews (page 5 of 14)
Is it fair to give it 5 stars just for having a fantastic album art? Probably not. But on top of that it really is great music. The songs are delicate and soft yet imaginitive and really catchy. Nick had a knack for creating simple melodies with just his guitar and voice. I've already been coming back to this constantly and love it already. 9/10
I’ve been meaning to listen to Nick Drake for a while now, but kept forgetting. I’m so glad this was the album because it’s beautiful. Absolutely brilliant.
Great album. Wonderful acoustic guitar melodies, low and calming vocals, each track distinct while still maintaining and overall style for the album.
I wish I could live inside this album. It's so comfortable with its simple approcach to songwriting. Just a voice and an acoustic guitar. I'll be revisiting this one over and over and over. 5/5
For this project I am listening to every single album, even those already familiar to me. So I was waiting for the perfect moment to listen to this one, when I could really listen to Nick Drake's lyrics and fingerpicking and chords and absorb it all. An absolutely beautiful album - sad yet achingly hopeful, even more so knowing Nick Drake's backstory and that this was his final album before he died at 26. An easy 5/5.
Fantastic, Nick Drake was a genius.
Easily my favorite so far, I saved every song.
Had no idea going in what this was or what to expect but I found it amazing. A raw, emotional portrait of a troubled man. Short and powerful.
The way that he captures melancholy in his lyrics is unmatched and he certainly had a natural talent for the guitar, his choice of tuning is as strange as it is fascinating. Nick Drake was the textbook example of tortured artist, gone too soon but I’m deeply grateful to be able to listen to such a profound work of art in this lifetime.
Classic, love it. Between the lyrics, guitar composition, and that warm warm guitar sound and creamy vocals I'd recommend it to most.
Where to possibly begin? Fifty years on from its release, “Pink Moon” has become inseparable from Nick Drake’s tragic mental health deterioration and eventual suicide two years after release, aged just twenty-six. While I don’t think it’s the explicit, “all-hope-lost” suicide note many might see it as, the association is unavoidable: “Pink Moon” is widely regarded as one of the most unflinching, personal albums of all time. This alone brings a good deal of its acclaim, but why else? What are these five stars for? For a winning less-is-more approach. This album hits all the harder for being twenty-eight minutes when it could have been fifty-eight. For the devastating simplicity of the title track’s lyric “None of you stand so tall; the pink moon’s gonna get you all”. For the removal of each and every superfluous musician from the line-up after Drake’s previous releases, “Five Leaves Left” and “Bryter Layter”. In time, Drake showed the world that his songs would shine the brightest when unadorned. For every cavernous space in between phrases in “Horn”. For the almost-unbearable intimacy. Drake’s close-mic vocals rarely rising above a whisper, audible squeaks and buzzes on his guitar. Such striking clarity of production which places him in the room with the listener. For foreshadowing Radiohead’s entire career in “Parasite”. For the album’s quiet determination to blow against the wind with its sparse construction, and against every contemporary review or critic which either overlooked or derided it. You bastards. For all the dark days “Place to Be” and “Which Will” have carried me through, as well as I’m sure many a Nick Drake fan. Both heartbreaking, and two of the very best. For the melodic sensibilities of these songs: each wafer-thin hook exposed and trembling, but above all beautiful. “Things Behind the Sun”, “Place to Be”, “Pink Moon”… wow. For the ominous poetry of “Harvest Breed”, hinting in four lines at an ambiguous journey towards death, or rebirth. For Drake’s magnificent and underrated guitar playing, and for all the hours I’ve spent trying to nail “From the Morning”, doggedly tuning to BEBEBE and barely managing it at half-speed. For “now we rise, and we are everywhere”. Words to punctuate Drake’s final recorded song, the jewel of his entire catalogue, and words which can be read on his gravestone in Tanworth-in-Arden. For every note. Every line. Every grey day. Every new morning. And every shining pink moon.
*Parasite
One of my go-to albums in the autumn time. Warm, fuzzy, intimate folk music at it's best.
The last artistic expression of a life cut tragically short, Pink Moon is Nick Drake’s soul poured onto vinyl. Loneliness and despair, made beautiful.
One of my favorite artists of all time is Elliott Smith so when I first heard Nick Drake, I was on board immediately. The similarities are obvious but I was blown away when I found out Drake was doing this in the late 60s/early 70s. There's something timeless about the arrangements and melodies. The songwriting, stripped down production and soft, warm vocals give it a melancholic feel but I wouldn't call it sad. It's more somber but also comforting. This is a great rainy day record as are Drake's other albums.
I didn't know I knew this one! What a good song! Wow. That May have been the best guy and his guitar album I've ever heard. So nice!
And here I was thinking Joni Mitchell’s “Blue” was raw. This album is one of the most sensitive, confessional, and melancholy albums I’ve heard without understanding the lyrics. Nick Drake delivers pure folk, with nothing but his breathy vocals billowing over his guitar, which plays simple accompaniment. It seems to draw the listener’s attention to the lyrics, but the lyrics are vague and mysterious, as if describing another world. And yet its emotional power is not diminished. While you may not “get it” on your first listen, subsequent listens will go by quickly due to the album’s length. And it’s nigh impossible to capture this album’s full worth from one listen. Each moment is passing but precious. To truly savour each moment, each intimate story of isolation and melancholy, this album demands your full attention. And it will reward you with a beautiful expression of emotion all the orchestras in the world could not parallel. Standout Songs: “Pink Moon” “Place to Be” “Road” “Parasite”
I wake up today listening to this álbum. Such a pearl!
In his final album, Drake drops the busy baroque instrumentation of his prior two albums in favor of a minimalist style of just him and his acoustic guitar. These songs are immensely beautiful with simple yet powerful imagery, with themes of depression, loneliness, and alcoholism, featuring reoccurring symbolism of the landscape and sky, and the juxtaposition of day and night. Every song stands out here, with plenty of memorable moments that leave lasting impressions, and interludes "Horn", "Know", and "Harvest Bread" give us breaks to breathe. Drake's soft voice and pauses press more weight on each phrase. But even his guitar alone is pleasing to listen to. Sometimes simple and repetitive but other times lush and active (as in "From the Morning"). This is one of those albums that could sound a bit boring and one-dimensional yet pleasant at first but then grow more and more after you look into the lyrics.
This album was super calming and very welcomed at this point of my life. It felt nice to just sit down and not have to worry for a while.
This album is beautifully melancholy, I loved it
Moody and dark. One of the best acoustic singer-songwriter albums. Free Ride is my favorite song on here.
I really liked this. It's quiet, it's peaceful, acoustic guitar and slow yet sprightly songs. It put me in mind of having a somewhat wistful day at the beach. I particularly liked "Place to Be" and "Harvest Breed."
One of the most emotional, melancholic and intimate albums ever. Nick Drake created magic by using only his voice, guitars and piano on this record. I wish he would have lived long enough to see how many people love his music today.
Always found this guy fascinating. Great album
fabulous
New to me, I liked it a lot!
A light night/early morning album if there ever was one. Sparse and understated, Drake would kill himself after recording this masterpiece. Beautiful and terribly sad at the same time. Best Tracks: Pink Moon; Which Will; From The Morning
One of the most beautiful albums every made. Perfect for a rainy day.
This album is beautiful. Will probably be listening to this a lot
Listen to this one regularly. It’s beautiful from start to end.
Love, Love, Love this album. It's all ambiance and atmosphere for me. Same reason I love Iron & Wine I suppose, delicate and complicated fingerpicking and whispery lyrics you can get lost in. If you like this, John Martyn's Solid Air is a good listen as well, the title track is dedicated to Nick Drake.
I love this album. I can definitely feel Nick Drake's influence on a lot of my favorite bands.
This is one of those highly revered cult albums that lives up to its hype. It's haunting, simple, and beautiful. An album I always feel like I don't spend enough time with from an artist I know I haven't spent enough time with.
This was amazing. First album on here which is by an artist i never heard of before and with songs I truly enjoyed. Acoustic music at it's absolute best
The simplicity of this album is amazing. This album gave me a feeling of being alone. It makes me see Nick Drake creating this album just by himself. I didn’t expect to like this but this album brought be calm and steady emotions.
Excellent album. Nick Drake's mellow, moody brand of folk music is always a delight to listen to, and 'Pink Moon' is one of the best examples of his craft. The fact that this album sounds surprisingly modern goes to show the profound impact it would have on future acts.
I already listened to it before you recommended me.
A classic Nick Drake album: close to perfection, a bit sparser than the other two Nick Drake albums (only vocals and guitar). All three of them are on the 1001 list, and I assume Nick Drake is the only artist with a 100% score.
Another collection of wonderful, beautifully performed songs.
Stilled timeless beauty.
notes - Third and final album by singer songwriter nick drake - I LOVE this album - especially in winter - Most songs on here are around the 2 minute mark, say what they need to say and get out - His unique vocal style and guitar playing are the focus - nothing to disctract - After finishing his previous album with a backing band and guests he wanted to do an album with just him - The result is an extremely personal and intimate album - His last release before his death 2 years later fav - Road - Love the dizzying guitar arpeggio style least fav - Know - Definitely the weakest song on here 5/5 - love this album, listen to it all the time
28 exceptional minutes of music. Mesmerizing, gorgeous, but also hooky in very unique ways. The way he composes is unlike anyone else. Man and guitar fused, sounding like an orchestra.
I wish this album never ended. Same thing with this man’s life. I could get lost in his music forever. Just a guitar and his voice but it feels like an entire band. Truly an incredible, generational talent.
Pinka moon is on its way
I was genuinely upset when I found out I was on the final song; I wanted to spend more time in this tender little moment. Something about Nick Drake just leaks down into my bones and settles in my soul; haunting, touching, gorgeous. I guess I can say now that I think he has a perfect discography; what a sendoff.
Already listened one of my favourites
Just beautiful
Really like this sorta stuff
My favorite piece of melancholia to ever be released. Nick drake perfectly captures the emotional milieu of wistfulness, lethargy, and yearning. Truly transporting and one of its kind. I’m only sad there’s not more nick drake to listen to.
Loved what this man could do with a guitar and his voice. Very comforting music. Loved it.

Pink Moon was the third and final studio album by the English musician Nick Drake, released in the UK by Island Records on 25 February 1972. Recorded without backing band. The lyrical content of the album has often been attributed to Drake's ongoing battle with depression. Pink Moon was not sold well like previous two Drake's albums (fewer than 4.000 copies of all three albums sold totally). His reluctance to perform live, or be interviewed, contributed to his lack of commercial success. Later in 1999, "Pink Moon" was used in a Volkswagen commercial, boosting Drake's US album sales from about 6,000 copies in 1999 to 74,000 in 2000. Drake was being credited as an influence by such artists as Robert Smith of The Cure and Peter Buck of R.E.M. By the early 1990s, he had come to represent a certain type of "doomed romantic" musician in the UK music press and was frequently cited as an influence by artists including Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Aimee Mann, Beck, Robyn Hitchcock and The Black Crowes. There is no known video footage of the adult Drake; he was only ever captured in still photographs and in home footage from his childhood. This is a gem! I don't want to rate it. It's just 5 stars without any doubt. Warm sound, nice guitar techniques. I also liked the cover of the album with Dalí-esque art by Michael Trevithick, who was incidentally a friend of Drake's sister Gabrielle. Will definitely get this one on vinyl. (16/02/2023).
In hindsight, I should have rated 'Five Leaves Left' as 4 stars, because 'Pink Moon' is the real 5-star performance in my opinion. The album has an air of intimacy akin to Nelson's 'Red Headed Stranger'. Hearing the strings rattle, fingers sliding on the strings, the slight imperfections of the chords and the inhales between the phrases, all combine to create a musical atmosphere that is warm and enveloping. The songs themselves are fascinatingly engaging given it's mainly just a man and his guitar. I'm re-listening to 'Harvest Breed' right now and it's a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Overall, the album is a true gem and it set the standard for acts like Jose Gonzalez, Iron and Wine and many other 'an artist and their guitar' groups that came to follow.
A spare, melancholy masterpiece. I'm honoring this by not saying another word. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Pink Moon, Place to Be, Things Behind the Sun, From the Morning, Road, Which Will, Horn, Parasite, Harvest Breed, Free Ride, Know
This is the third (and final) Nick Drake record to show up on this, and it's just absolutely beautiful and so full and warm. Such a great record.
Lovely atmospheric folk music that doesn't overstay it's welcome. If only more musicians had the balls to just say 'that's it, I'm not padding this out and adding filler'.
I loved it. Short, loopable, haunting, and beautiful. The album art is weird but I don't even care, I'm gonna be listening to this one a lot, and for a while.
Just beautiful every time.
An album and artist before their time.
completely new experience from what i have been listening to
My favorite by one of my favorites. Wonderful.
What a lovely, quiet and wonderful album. Looks like I am a complete Nick Drake fan.
Top 3 Songs: 1 - From The Morning (11) 2 - Pink Moon (1) 3 - Which Will (4)
8/8 mooned pink
Beautiful guitar
Damn I Nick Drake. You can feel his life, ambition, dread et al in every single track. The obvious highlight here is the titular opener a somber lament in the arriving lunar phenomenon. Beautiful overall album.
Pink pink pink pink… pink moon 11/10 album listened to it probably 50 times
Wonderful album, his masterpiece. Easy 5.
love the sound and style. incredibly soothing.
One of the most soothing voices ever, absolute master of alternate tunings
Mysterieuze melancholie.
Hugljúf þjóðlagatónlist. Gítar og söngur, algjörlega minn tebolli.
Another classic, very chill and easy listening. Short album.
Classic acoustic folk music. You'd recognize it from any number of folkies movie soundtracks, but I couldn't have told you who sung it. Excellent album.
Sort of folk/indie creation, could see how this album got things going for the indie scene. Would listen to again.
I'd never heard of Nick Drake before. This albums an easy 5 stars from me. Nothing but his voice and the guitar. Wonderfully executed lyrics. Fantastic. Great runtime and selection of tracks.
Envie de crever PREFS: TOUT MOINS PREF: RIEN
Raw and sentimental yet some how comforting in a way incredible listen.
It felt like being in an indie movie for 30 minutes and I loved it
Amazing.
Nice Nicke!
Intemporal
This is the album that made me falsely expect (and, perhaps, wish) every folk album to just be someone singing with a guitar*. Using this album as any kind of point for comparison is unfair, really. It’s just a one-of-a-kind album *There are about four measures of piano on the first track.
An incredibly intimate follow up to the often over orchestrated Bryter Later, a beautiful mind laid bare and fragile.
Was good, very melancholic.
Another gorgeous Nick Drake album, though this one's my least favorite of the three it is still a gorgeous album, beautifully arranged and performed with just the right hint of pathos. 5 🌟
Amazing. So many brilliant songs got me into acoustic fingerpicking.
This is so lovely but far too short. Faves: Pink Moon, Parasite
I really like this: good, solid folk music. No complaints. Also, as someone who has tried to play Nick Drake on guitar, this shit is really difficult and he is a master of the instrument, though it sounds deceptively simple.
Very cool singer/songwriter style stuff. Love it. Will check out more.
I don't think I know Nick Drake, but the album cover isn't promising. Oh wait, the opening notes of the opening/title track are immediately familiar, so I guess I do. Pink Moon is a great song, though up until now I never knew what he was saying. It just sounds great. And the songs keep coming, sounding great, sad but great. This is a beautiful album. I can't believe it is from 1972. It sounds timeless. I'm glad I listened and will again. Absolutely belongs on this list. Favorites: Pink Moon, Place to Be, Horn, From the Morning. Also all the other songs.
Música para ouvir e relaxar
Brilliant musician who died way too young. I've owned all his albums since they were released and he is in the first rank.
Timeless, transcendent, beautiful, and heartbreaking
One of the best finds from 1001
Loved this album since college. Simply amazing and ahead of it's time. RIP Nick. Thanks for leaving us this amazingly haunting music
Beguilingly strong. My favourite of the three albums.
Kanon, vintage Gonzales
Älskar
Mycket charmigt! Tycker att jag kan höra jose gonzales.
This is cool, ambient and original sounding music. You can listen to it absorb the lyrics, or have it on the background - it works both ways. A thoughtful, intelligent musician with his own sound. I can see why this belongs in the 1001 albums….
Just beautiful. There's nothing more I need say.
I saw it written and I saw it say Pink moon is on its way And none of you stand so tall Pink moon gonna get you all
Dick nrake
Not much of my vibe, but good!
I love this album! Wonderful, relaxing, beautiful, haunting.
Authentic tenderness accompanied with varied and interesting fingerpicking guitar
First time Iv heard of Nick Drake. Wow so simple so intimate and emotional, brilliant. I can see this becoming a go to album for me.
Better than Drizzy
have loved this one for a long time
This album is beautiful, simple and magical. It feels so intimate and really makes you think about the true emotional power of music. I'm a huge fan.
hekk ahjar
Kbir. Classic.
Nickkkkkk 😭
Folksy, relaxing, excellent choice for a morning coffee / tea. First time listen will listen again for sure.
Classic album!
A good friend gifted me this album with no context in a time I needed it most. Beautiful. 5 stars.
This is pretty great. Introspective. I’d listened to Nick Drake a while back, but never to entire albums. Enjoyable.
Soundtrack of my teens. Nick Drake is morphine for the ears
Very good acoustic album
What a great reminder on how much I love this album.
Loved it! John Denver meets Pink Floyd? Unique singer/songwriter experience.
Beautiful album. This is why I use this website, so I can come across music like this that I hadn't otherwise heard of
Genius. Amazing songs
🥶🥦🌳⏳
Pink Moon is the third and final studio album by Nick Drake before he took his own life. The folky songs are performed without backing band (only vocals, guitar and piano by Drake). This makes it a very personal and a bit sad with all the unfilled space and silence in production. It results in fabulous songs.
One of my all-time favorites
All of it is 💯
depressing
So delicate and ephemeral. It’s magic.
Fantastic album. Had been a decade or so since I had last heard it.
This album is amazing each song is very interesting and enjoyable how short it is and I thought that how simple the songs are really added to the music. It's so crazy to me that this album sold less than 5,000 copies. My only complaint the songs kinda sound the same but only just a little bit. love this album 9/10 closer to a 10 than a 9
I dig me some Nick Drake. I often play him when I’m super stressed—mellows me out. Also has some nostalgia for me of my days in Los Angeles.
Just puts me in a great headspace...Sounds like laying in a meadow on a cloudy day.
Great album own on vinyl
I'd heard of Nick Drake for about 15 years now, but somehow never got around to listening. Overwhelmingly emotional album... not really my typical genre, but it left quite the mark.
It was amazing. I didn't know him before, so it was a completely different thing for me. The songs are chill, relaxed and the lyrics can warm every heart. (Also, the album cover is very pretty, look at the colors!)
yesssss more sad mellow tunez
Every song I expected John Denver to belt out the next lyrics. But was not disappointed by the relaxing flow of vocals from Drake. I can’t list a tract I didn’t like. Especially since the album cover confused me completely. Acoustic guitar was so good. The lyrics very deep. When he sang Place To Be, I imaged the colors greener than a hill and palest blues . So wild how he brought those images to my mind. It was sad to read he was battling depression, because his talent was so maximal for a minimalist production. I respect a musician who does all his own writing ,playing and singing. Great album .
always a great album
Me ha gustado mucho.
Veeery good and hippie
İt's good but nothing more
Better than I remember. Already own.
Perfect just for the first song, the title track.
And so it came to pass, the moon was pink and all was well. Nick Nick Nick Nick Nick, Nick Nick Drake.
Love pink moon. Need to listen again w lyrics
Seeee
A classic, perfect winter afternoon listening
One of my favorite folk / singer-songwriter albums. Even with a few not so great songs, overall the album is amazing.
Not a new album to me. Amazing guitar playing and singing. Perfect for a drive or a Sunday morning with coffee.
Excellent album. It is uplifting, but sad at the same time. Nick Drake has a great voice.
Should’ve listened to this earlier than just now, but it did not disappoint. So good
I fucking love Nick Drake. 9/10
One of the best ever made
it was great.
Great old folk
Very pleasant
I really liked this!!!
Nearly nearly nearly a 5 for me but honestly there’s a few moments that really bore me (Know especially). But much love for Nick Drake and the story behind this album. Really love his guitar work on (most of) this one. The one two punch of Pink Moon and Place to Be alone is enough to build a legacy on. Also I hate Elliott Smith
Such a simple album, crazy that there’s literally one piano line on the entire thing, and when it comes in it hits. Title track is great, some other tracks clearly inspired Desert Island Disk, beautiful album.
Not as life changing as it’s hyped up to be, but really solid still
You can feel the emotion in the songs and its a great combination of acoustic guitar and vocals
A simple folk album, yet comfortable and lush beyond its time
Really enjoyable. I had no idea what to expect. Felt American (in a good way) and raw but not too serious.
Haven’t listened to this since high school. Holds up
i really loved his voice
This is a lovely album, and not at what I'm in the mood for today. Seriously great album though.
Cool album in its raw simplicity
This album felt like I wanna live in Perfect Days, and put this on as a cassette in the morning before I start my work. The guitar has the certain strung, and forward going energy to it. The notes and metal strings are fragile, but push you in a gentle way. It is different, when compared to something like harp, where strings are plucked, floating. Even though it's a bit mixed feelings to listen to man and guitar these days, I enjoyed the authenticity of this album. This had vulnerability.
Maybe I'm a bit too generous here but I really think that I would be able to enjoy this more in the future. Therefore, it should actually be a 3 but there's inherent potential in this for me. 3.8
Really enjoyed. Beautiful album for 1972 as well. I didn’t realise that style of indie was from as long ago as that. Gorgeous flow of an album, incredible lyricism. Incredible to settle into
Acoustic guitar and vocals. This album was never popular in its day. It gained a following many years later, after Nick Drake's death. This is the 1970's equivalent to Bon Iver and Jose Gonzalez, the moody, depressed, acoustic signer/songwriter vibe. 7/10
Gostosinho
I like the atmosphere and the vibe. I like Drake's voice, but the breathiness and quietness make him difficult to understand at times. I could probably reduce the sound pollution in my workspace to help remedy that issue, but I honestly can't be bothered to do so. Where I'm listening, the instruments punch through and the vocals take on a gentle, murmurous quality. It ends up being quite delightful. My apologies to the artist for disregarding what I'm sure are very meaningful lyrics.
I didn’t vibe with this a ton until I listened a few times as I thought it was a bit underbaked / raw / simplistic. I’ve heard the title track quite a bit as Spotify has shoved it in my face over the years. I like the raw sound he’s got and how it’s seemingly just stripped down to him on this album. It’s incredible how old this record is. Some songs could be from the 90s/00s. Light 4.
Wow, every nick drake album made this list. Usually I'd say it's a bit much but I think 2 out of the 3 have been well worth a listen, including this one. Can't quite remember what bryter layter sounded like (it was album 121) but this stripped back acoustic approach was the perfect fit for his voice. Again this felt ahead of it's time and potentially influential on the singer songwriters to come. Breezed by and would like to listen again.
Our third nick Drake album and it was of the same ilk of the others, which is very good. But stylistically very similar. He was very good at his thing. I think I might've enjoyed the other albums we've had just as much as this one, but I see this is more highly rated. Place to be, pink moon and things behind the sun were my favourites
Great
1001 Albums introduced me to this great artist. Loved him ever since. However, a whole album gets a bit monotonous sorry to say
not my cup of tea and also quite boring. good guitar smooth singing
This was beautiful, melodious and melancholic. Very calming and yet sad. What a soul. 8/10
Love it!
Sooo sad
Nice, chill album. 3.75 bumped up to four stars.
A great album, but the standout songs outshine everything else, making it feel long even at 27 minutes.
This was great. I knew Pink Moon and a few other songs of his on other albums, but first time hearing the rest of this. Great sounding stuff. Influenced a lot of modern indie folk.
Very understated album. Lots of imagery in the lyrics, and it's certainly powerful. I think it's the right length, any more would be too much, it is arguably very samey, but it doesn't outstay its welcome. Nick's singing here is different to on Five Leaves Left; it's more mumbled, and he rushes through the phrases. I have to say I prefer his voice on Five Leaves Left - I think it's a better showcase of how good his voice actually is. However, I think the lyrical content here has more impact. The instrumentation is extremely minimal; basically just acoustic guitar and voice. The guitar playing isn't particularly special, but the nature of the recording makes it feel like a private concert. It definitely works. An extremely sad album, but one I'd revisit in a reflective mood. Mid 4.
I was really excited to hear this after the masterpiece that was 5 Leaves Left. I usually don't go into an album actively looking at lyrics but 5 leaves left demanded my attention and brought me to tears so here we go My heart dropped when I saw it was a solo acoustic guitar + vocals project; regardless I turned on the first song and my prejudice was washed away by the beautiful sound of his voice. So ashy and shy, it really feels like he's opening up about his life honestly and you are the only one in the room. He's got some astonishing song writing skills, really just embeds into your brain. I really feel like I'm being biased here but I've never wanted to listen to a guy strum a guitar more. I'm so conflicted. On the one hand I think his other albums showcase how strong of a songwriter he is when he has more instruments at his disposal. On the other hand I love how personal this album is. I'm going to go with an extremely extremely high 4 for now I'm just sad he only got to make 3 albums...
Super chill, relaxing
I used to like this album a lot.
4.5 I liked this way more than I expected to!
Beautiful work, the story of Nick Drake's gradual rise in popularity is a very interesting one. I find this album to be a bit unfinished though. It's very short and sparse which is kind of intended I suppose, but still. I find his other 2 albums to be a bit more enjoyable as full on works.
Day 1: Pink Moon by Nick Drake ------------------------ Never heard of Nick Drake nor this album before so I'm going in with no expectations. I can image myself listening to this at night as a lullaby of sorts. Pretty nice to listen to while falling asleep. His voice is very soft on this album which goes with his guitar playing. The album is pretty short, which is a surprise to me, but that doesn't matter that as much. I wish there was more piano on it, since it's just him playing the guitar for the entire album. ------------------------ Fav Song(s): Horn, Parasite Song(s) that I didn't like as much: Know Overall Rating: 4/5, it's good, but I don't see myself listening to this more.
I recently described Jeff Buckley’s vocals as ethereal. The same could be said of Nick Drake. In fact, the two seem to share more in common: both were superb songwriters, and both died tragically young. Drake never had a successful career in the US, so I never heard much of his music before today. This album is sad, beautiful and - yes, ethereal. I thought I had heard what an acoustic guitar could sound like, but this proved me wrong. Drake’s guitar playing is unique sounding, sometimes off key, but it seems intentional. The result is a feeling of loss that transcends mere depression. Too short an album reflects too short a life and career. This is the album that this project was made for. You need to hear this album. 4 stars
very lovely
This held me from behind without getting a boner
It's really pretty and calming. His voice is so delightful. I remember finding this album in high school, it speaks to a quiet longing we all have inside. One of my favorite albums is a collection of Visee's guitar works. This reminds me of it for many reasons. Feels like I'm at court, serenaded by a fountain. A melancholy musician strumming, fall of empire.
Good but sad
Beautiful, rich, relaxing.
chilling and captivating. too young, man.
This album has atmosphere for days and is a truly unique entry. The lore behind it is pretty interesting as well. His guitar style is very interesting amd original for sure back then. I do prefer some tracks from his earlier work with a bit more substance, but this still stands out. If it were longer it would overstay its welcome, but at this runtime its a true gem
Very enjoyable album. I had heard a song of his that is not on this album, and just like that one, this album has a haunting, lo-fi sound that feels very intimate. I think it’s a result of both, his almost ethereal voice added to the acoustic guitar that sounds like it has a mic right up against it.
4/5
Not the best Drake’s album. I know, I get all that “minimalism”, “intimacy” etc., but it just doesn’t fully work for me in this case.
It's really too bad that Northern Sky isn't on this album because that's by far his best song, but this is definitely his best album. It's a bit much to listen to in large doses though....very sleepy.
I'd never heard the whole album, and I don't think I knew that he wrote Which Will, which I knew from Lucinda's version. Sad and lovely.
Pink Moon is one of those albums that feels less like a performance and more like someone quietly sitting across from you, telling you exactly how they feel without ever raising their voice. The title track immediately pulled me in, the gentle guitars, subtle piano, and Nick Drake’s fragile vocals come together in a way that feels deeply human. It’s short, stripped down, and authentic, the kind of song made for long drives, lonely walks, or moments where you just need to sit with your thoughts. What struck me most throughout the album is how the minimal presentation puts every lyric and guitar progression under a microscope. Songs like “Place to Be,” “Road,” and “Which Will” pause time for a moment, letting Drake’s incredible guitar playing and quietly devastating songwriting take centre stage. Knowing his struggles with depression adds another layer to tracks like “Place to Be” and “Parasite,” but I never felt like the album wallows in sadness. Instead, there’s a melancholy that feels broader, almost reflective of the disillusionment that hung over the early 1970s after the optimism of the previous decade faded away. Even the shortest songs leave a lasting impact. “Horn” is a beautiful instrumental that says everything without words, while “Know” somehow manages to haunt with only a few lines. “Things Behind the Sun” especially stayed with me, shifting between warmth and darkness like someone trying to hold onto hope while watching it slip away. Then “From the Morning” closes the album with a fragile sense of light breaking through the clouds. I’m really glad I was reintroduced to this album. Maybe it’s the season, or maybe it’s because life feels brighter right now, but this record gave me space to slow down and breathe for a while. Nick Drake left us far too soon, but he left behind an intimate, timeless album that still feels deeply moving over fifty years later. 8.8/10
Pretty interesting atmosphere
Så begåvad singer-song-writer. Love it! Stark fyra!
I enjoyed this! Super minimal instrumentation. Echos the chill vibes of other folksy players of that era. The vocals complement the many unique and cool guitar passages — sets it apart. 4.0/5.0
Surreal and beautiful. Sounds before its time. Cool guitar
Just a really beautiful sounding album. Nick Drake melancholy - just his voice and his guitar.
Another solid album. Nick Drake is great. Pretty sure I heard some of his tracks on a Wes Anderson movie? A couple are very familiar. This one is mostly just him on guitar. Real good. Hard to say whether I like this one or Bryter Layter better. Different vibes for different moods. Looks like all his albums are on this list, so I look forward to getting around to the last one eventually (chronologically his first one?). I dig Nick Drake. Great album.
This is a shockingly nice album to listen to. It was calming and relaxing and it just made me feel nice. Nothing too special about this album though.
I'm not really able to explain what I like about this album, but this challenge has definitely shown me that some of my favorites are these intimate albums that sound like you and your friend are having a deep conversation and you are getting an unprecedented look into his mind.
Pensive, depressing, wistful. Gets the job done more successfully than similar records to this on this list.
Sure the songs are kind of all similar, but it's a wonderfully soothing listen nonetheless.
Nice, good. Kind of Radiohead at points
The Dream Academy le dedicó Life in a Northern Town.
Pretty good, especially for such a short album
Acoustic guitar, smooth vocals 5
Vary interesting finger style guitar but the vocals don't really do much for me not that they are bad or anything but over all I liked it because I am a sucker for folk music
Loved this chill vibe!
I actually really enjoyed this one! I wasn't sure what to expect, I've seen this album at work for years, but I don't think I've heard any Nick Drake before. I was pleasantly surprised by the folky vibe that isn't country and is almost psychedelic at times. Definitely one to pick up on vinyl!
A very pleasant sounding sad album
Very pleasant, short and earthy songs. Whole thing is worth a listen but I personally found "Which Will" and "From The Morning" particularly touching
The best from his small but impressive catalogue. Such a voice and a talent, such a sad tale. Always enjoy this one.
I don't quite get it but I also do Will I listen to again: 70%
Easylistening
really good. Enjoyed the melancholy dissident nature of the album.
Pink Moon is a testament to what can be done with some instrumentals, a violently depressing vocal performance and some solid symbolism. In some ways this album would be better with more instrumentation but songs like Parasite stand alone as near perfect tracks by utilising the guitar to create such a somber tone.
Very pretty, very soothing and very short. It’s like the perfect album.
Simply put it's a beautiful deep album. This album has played at my grandpa and a close friend's funeral. How ironic that those were the only times I was familiar with this album. The guitar is clean and his vocals are gentle but not too boring. I wouldn't listen to this regularly but it's nice.
canciones muy chill. tipo LoFi. banque. 4 puntos
I already listened to this album many times. I love this album
A beautiful songwriter album, just a man and his guitar. He has a great voice and emotes well. I love the opening track, great start for this album.
the songs seem a bit simple, lyrics are good though. The songs sound the same a bit he's barely singing just basically whispering some songs are pretty good, but still fairly boring A bit atmospheric
This is what 1001 albums you must hear before you die is for. Beautiful songs, beautiful album
Soothing
mellow asl, lowkey fire
Cool album!! Loved the guitar tone and creative playing
Beautiful, calming album
This was really a wonderful album. I haven’t been able to listen to the lyrics super critically, but the feeling of isolation and depression the music presents is well executed. I ended up listening to this album three times yesterday, I think this one is a keeper.
I have fond memories of passing this album around with friends in college and recognize all the elements of genius in it, but I also have to admit that for some reason it doesn't come together for me in a way that makes it a favorite album.
Felt very personal. It was good
A hidden gem. Stripped down, it's just Drake and his guitar. Sparse but hopeful lyrics, delivered with his soft but melodic voice. Some of the songs are sad, but the album ends on a thoughtful point. Very sweet, but not saccharine.
even though the album was from the early 70s, the music is timeless. it seemed it could have been released yesterday. i liked it alot.
Good
Very chill vibes. Felt very relaxing.
3.5 + half star for album art
This listener set out on this new adventure blind to many styles of music and deaf in one ear due to an errant step on my IEMs. This album couldn't be any better of a place to begin. I sit and am soothed and gently tugged into this album. The titular track lures you into the mystery of the remainder of the album. Your journey is like a walk around a garden after awakening from a dream you wish were true. The voice whispers behind a veil of mist, but the air rings with the sound of fingers picking on tight strings. You can hear Nick Drake's fingerprints on the coiled steel. An album of atmosphere and round sounds that encompasses all of you.
I really like the songwriting but the guitar playing and vocals are a bit more raw than some of the contemporary music I like, aside from Things Behind The Sun and a few others. It would be so cool to listen to a re-recorded version with new mastering by modern producers. Sort of reminds me of CAKE in that the composing is excellent but lacks the polished sound I look for in music. Still probably my favorite album so far on 1001 Albums.
I’ve heard of Nick Cave, but don’t think I really know that he was from the early 70s. Think he just popped in a folk playlist. This is quite good music. It sounds so familiar. I’ve definitely heard Pink Moon. And much of this seems very influential to the indie folk scene of the past 20-25 years. I can hear this influence on artists like Bon Iver and Iron and Wine. Honestly if I didn’t know the year, would’ve thought this was more contemporary. This feels like a solid 4. Going to give another listen because it feels like it could be a 5, but just not sure there’s enough to take it over the edge for me. Great singer songwriter folk music. Timeless really. The closing track might be my favorite on the album. This is all just so simple perfect music.
Classic
Every time you put this on, just takes you to another place. Unique. 4.1/5
Simplicity can be incredibly haunting.
For a guy doing some relatively simple songs for voice and acoustic guitar, this record sounds weirdly ahead of its time. You can definitely hear how ND influenced singer-songwriters and indie musicians of the 90s and 00s, and now his whisper voice is the main style of singing for the "bedroom pop" crowd. Underrated guitarist too. This is just an undeniably good record.
With an album name like this I was not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, really soothing. Album cover is sick too
I've heard occasional songs from Nick Drake on the radio over the past however many years, but this is the first time I've heard an entire album of his. I had to brace myself a bit for this, thinking it might be a dozy, calm acoustic album, but I was pleasantly surprised - it was a little dark, and had a good sense of rhythm to a lot of it. I think it's like how I like folk music from the UK and Scandinavia more than American folk, there's a darkness to a lot of it that I like. I don't know if I'd go back to this, but it was good to finally hear a whole Nick Drake album. I see why people think this is such an important album. 4 stars
This would be a FANTASTIC album to listen to in the back seat of a car, riding during an afternoon rainstorm. Incredibly soothing, but also fills you with an undeniable sense of melancholy. I decided after the first song to turn on background noise in my phone’s settings to have the sound of a gentle rain playing quietly behind the album. It enhanced the experience tenfold and made the songs feel even more intimate and gloomy. It almost feels like I’m not supposed to hear this. It’s a similar feeling I get when listening to the Kurt Cobain home recordings. It feels unfinished, but I think that was intentional. It’s very stripped back, unpolished, imperfect, and emotionally raw, just a voice and a guitar. This is the swan song of a young artist who took his own life only two years after the album’s release. And it feels like it. Is this something I’ll run to revisit any time soon? Not particularly. But it’ll be perfect when I find myself neck deep in a depressive episode. I’ll rate it a 3.7/5, rounding up to 4. Favorite songs: Pink Moon, Which Will, Things Behind the Sun
really good lyrics, chill album to listen to, going back home a bit nostalgic
love nick drake
What a deep and beautiful record. Totally new acquaintance for me. A listen it through with care, and followed the lyrics through Spotify. Amazing lyricist, Nick Drake. At that point I was already prepared to give a four. Then I did some further reading on Nick Drake. The tragic of his life, the way he felt about live performance, and then the music he create with such a depth around those matters. Wow, beautiful, and deep. Nothing more to say.
I don't remember liking Bryter Layter but I don't know if I was just in the right mood or time of day for this album but I really enjoyed it. Smooth, relaxing, and really enjoyable listening experience.
Classic sad jams
my first Drake album, thought there'd be more rap but still pretty good
Magnificent
4/5
I hearded the album while reading the biography of Nick Drake, so, somehow, I got to know him better. It's a pity he left us so young
Great album, so comforting
Unique, singer song-writer that feels quite modern. Enjoyable to listen through with a couple standout songs. Multiple songs feel like lullabies
I love this album, it’s so comforting and precise. A really beautiful work
7 flat love nick drake and the title track is perhaps his best single but i feel like the overall album lacks consistency especially toward the back end. Much prefer bryter layter overall
70s - 80s Guitar solo album, basically, but I would definitely listen.
Pretty much just acoustic guitar with melancholy lyrics to drift your mind off to. It works beautifully though, both in the skill of his playing but also in capturing that late at night feeling of despair mixed with hope and the choice of how to move forward. I grew to enjoy what Nick was doing on every listen and by the time I got here I have become very fond of what he put to the record. Pink Moon, Horn, Things Behind the Sun and Parasite are the highlights for a highlight of an album.
Beautiful, tortured, sometimes barely there. I usually don't like this kind of thing but Drake had a special gift.
Sounds so ahead of its time, would never have guessed 1972.
Wasn't sure about this one at first. But a few plays through and it hit me. Very simplistic, and that's part of the charm. Learning about the artist adding so much more to it. Overall a great album to stick on and chill to.
