Reviews (page 4 of 14)

If Joy Division didn't exist, this would have probably been the soundtrack of my teenage years.

Rarely have I heard such an impactfull album with so few elements. Singer-songwriter often suffer from a tendency to be story teller while not caring so much about the instrument in their hands. However, Nick Drake is an exception. He cares as much about creating beatutiful melodies and soundscapes with his guitar as he cares about his lyrics. This album made me happy to be able to enjoy beautiful music, and sorrowful that this talent was taken away from the world far too early

Another flawless and beautiful album from Nick Drake.

Один из самых важных для меня альбомов, несмотря на то, насколько он прост. Лучшая песня: Place To Be

Lovely record - end to end - warm, melancholy and at time haunting in a good way. It’s a nice little cosy record.

A perfect album.

Having now finished the trio of Nick Drake albums, I can safely say it was the best discovery I made through this exercise.

Vilken vibe, otroligt album

Nice listen. He’s got a very chilled vocal which is reminiscent of loads of later, apparent copycats. Think Belle & Sebastian, Jack Johnston, and Passenger (to name a few). All of which I like as well, so if this guy came first then mucho respect

It’s the sort of album that shames the critics of yesteryear who seem so obsessed with celebrity and personality that they were unable to see and appreciate what in all respects is artistic perfection manifest. This album is warm and personal and reminds me of England and Englishness: as solid and steadfast as oak, eternally fresh as the ocean, and as rich as the grass atop the hill.

Divorced from the context of Nick Drake's life, Pink Moon is a hauntingly intimate album with consistently gorgeous songwriting. The title track opens with a delicate piano flourish, but from then on, the album is stripped down to just vocals and guitar. Drake’s playing and singing are flawless throughout, lending a sense of raw vulnerability to the record. With songs like “Place to Be” and “Things Behind the Sun,” the album reaches moments of truly heartbreaking beauty. Each track is minimal yet powerful, revealing layers of melancholy and introspection. Knowing how little attention all his releases received at the time, Drake’s documented depression, and his untimely death, Pink Moon transforms into a masterpiece—a quiet, yet devastating farewell. It doesn't surprise me that its influence has only grown over time. Did/Do I own this release? No Does this release belong on the list? Yes Would this release make my personal list? Yes Will I be listening to it again? Yes

Fantastic

Things Behind the Sun

Nickle

I really connected with the simplicity of Nick Drake's Pink Moon. Very much enjoyed this listen, and have since listened to the album multiple times.

I mean come on !!!

Wow. Emotionally heartfelt lyrics and vocals with intricate acoustic guitar playing. This is amazing, not much else to say

If ive heard an album before i can dive into the reviews before listening without having my first impression prejudiced. And o did so with this and im going to steal anothers review. 28 minutes of pure perfection.

i happened to listen to this album off a recommendation from a youtube channel that i like before i drew it from this project. when i first listened to it, i gave it 4 stars on rym. i thought it was simple and good, but nothing that was extraordinary. since i listened to pink moon, i havent been able to stop thinking about it. there is something extraordinary about it. it is so simple, so stripped back, so short, but its just beautiful. incredible instrumentation and vocals and nothing else. a perfect example of the term stripped back.

Because Nick Drake.

Wow, nunca había escuchado de él pero que genial. Bastante adelantado diría? No lo sé pero me ha gustado mucho

Easy. Fastest 5 star rating of the past 40+ albums. I adore these songs. Like many others, I was only made aware of Nick Drake in 2000, when that commercial aired, with the four pretty people driving through the night in their silver Golf cabriolet. Right away wrote an email @volkswagen to ask about that music. Simply gorgeous. And maybe his most fulfulling album.

I hadn't listened to this in years - absolutely mesmerizing.

Waaaaaay ahead of his time. I was blown away when I first heard this album in the early 2000s to learn that it wasn't recently recorded. Fucking incredible.

Favourite Song: Things Behind The Sun

I really enjoyed listening to the 'Pink Moon' album by Nick Drake. I'm glad I finally got around to listening to it because it was on my list for a while. This album has a unique charm with its beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something different in folk music.

What a beautiful and haunting glimpse into Nick Drake’s troubled mind

I've listened to this so many times, I know it intimately, just like I know it's a 5 all day long.

So good

In my top 25 all time. Easy 5 stars.

Waffled on whether to give this a 4 or 5, but landed on 5 because -within the limitations of the "one singer and one acoustic guitar" genre- it's hard to imagine a better album.

Never heard before - unfortunately! Verry fine singer-songwriter album.

i know this one of course <3 lovely to listen to again. feels so comforting as always 5

Nick Drake is just transportational

Underrated genius. Nick Drake’s story is incredibly tragic, but his music is some of the most beautiful ever written.

So sweet and simple. Love this album

you have to hand it to him

Love the first song

One of the greatest folk albums of all time. His vocals are so intimate and emotive, and the guitar playing is immaculate.

4.6/5, listened 4-5x while setting up house and driving around Cumming

Pink Moon is the third (and final) studio album by Nick Drake, originally released in 1972. Nick Drake was a talent who passed by almost unnoticed during his lifetime. In retrospect his work is hailed amongst the greatest albums of all time, but he barely sold records when he was actively making music. Drake was part of the UK folk scene of the late 60s and early 70s, with contemporaries such as Pentangle and Fairport Convention. He was well regarded amongst his peers but failed to attract a wider audience due to his reluctance of live performing. Drake's short life was truly tragic. I first attempted to listen to this album about 4 years ago now. It was ok, but didn't truly click with me. Until now. The record's overall themes of melancholy, isolation, and mortality really struck a chord with me on this listen. Maybe it's because I can better relate to these themes as I get older. Not only is the songwriting a strong point of this record, but the guitar playing is also great. Drake's fingerpicking style reminds me a lot of Donovan. Overall, this is a very intimate and introspective album. Perfect for sipping Sunday morning coffee or staring at the ceiling at 3:00AM wondering what could've been with that certain someone. At less than 30 mins, this album comes and goes before you realize, much like Nick Drake himself.

Never heard before but very chilled and enjoyable album

So strangely good

5/5. This album by itself is good but not as powerful if the context is not known. You feel the depression and sadness through the music and lyrics. It is an album that is a cry for help. There is a fine line with music where it can sound disingenuous when talking about depression but it's hard to not feel chills and the need to talk to Nick Drake. You want to get him a hot tea and hangout with him. The songs are hard to listen to not because they are bad, they are quite beautifully soft, but because it is relatable in so many ways as someone on anti-depressants. Not to mention the influence on most if not all singer-songwriters especially in the 90s when the album received critical acclaim retrospectively. Best Song: Place To Be, Parasite, Pink Moon

This is a top 5 album of mine for a long time. The vibe is exquisite. Chill, contemplative. Take some time and learn about Nick and his life. Listen to his other two albums. This 3rd and final was his masterpiece.

An album that, for a while, I’ve been wanting to click the way that it did for me today - I listened to this 6 times today, and was so moved by it and lost in its world. Got me thinking a lot about simplicity as a choice in music, about the image that one can conjure by just sitting down with a guitar, and how much you learn and receive from the negative space of that. So lush and lonely and beautiful, I shed some tears listening to this. Perfect for a rainy day like today. Also a favorite of my dad’s!

An endlessly relistenable for me. Top-tier pared down, minimal folk that is emotional and so comfy

One of my favorites. Will always remind me of being in college, and fall.

Wonderful album. Enjoyed every second!!!!

One of my favorites. Love the whole thing.

Raw and brilliant. The is the best Drake

Love it. It’s sounds raw, comforting, and folksy. It reminds me of rain and coffee. It feels like waking up on your birthday . Really enjoyed.

Pink Moon So good. As with the previous Nick Drake albums, each of them on any day can be my favourite. Listening today, this is my favourite, but if I listened to Five Leaves Left tomorrow that would probably be my favourite. The sparseness of the music fits so well with the sparseness of the lyrics, the fragments of observations, feelings and moods that the words evoke as they gently drift in and out. He doesn’t fully vocalise a lot of the words, so you get a real sense of an internal monologue of jumbled thoughts passing across the tumbling and spiralling guitar. Although there is an undeniable bleakness and sadness, there are also moments of joy and hope. I won’t go through each song, but I like them all and I like the flow, moving in and out of focus, some more rhythmic, some more atmospheric, all tying into the overall feeling of the album 28 minutes of melancholy acoustic perfection. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Playlist submission: Stick a pin in any tack, but today I really liked Road.

Perfection.

This album is incredibly impressive and a pleasure to listen to

Easiest 5 star album I've had in awhile, this is beautiful. Nick Drake is one of those names that I've heard thrown around a lot in the context of other artists I like, but I've never really listened to him. I get it now. It's Elliott Smith 20 years before Elliott Smith was making music. This is basically just Drake and a guitar, and every single second of the 28 minute album is perfection. Drake falls into the too big category of artists that died well before their time. This was his third and last album, and it's a bit haunting how upbeat it sounds (but in like a hesitant way) when you know he was going through it when he wrote it. Just beautiful and haunting at the same time. Like many artists before, Drake died fairly unknown and has gained significant popularity in the years since then. It's a shame he wasn't as well-known when he was around, but the accolades are well-deserved even if a bit late. Favorite song: Pink Moon Other: Place To Be, Road, Which Will, Horn, Things Behind The Sun, Know, Parasite, Free Ride, Harvest Breed, From The Morning 6/29/24

Absolutely lovely

Fantastic album if you want to kill yourself!

A beautiful album and one I'll revisit many times.

Heavy vibes. Funny that I got it right after Fairport Convention. Dope album cover too.

Beautiful album. What a gentle but troubled voice. Pure poetry and pure music with only an acoustic guitar and his voice (and a single piano line being the only piece of the music not played by Drake). I want to dive deeper into the lyrics because they do garble a bit. Never realized Pink Moon was about the full moon in April and the depression and lunacy (lunar...) that can come with it. Every year I get another year older in April. Another year closer to death. A terrible way to feel in the spring when the birds are chirping and the flowers are blooming and the rain is falling. Pink moon gonna get ye all...

And now we rise, and we are everywhere. Such optimistic sounding words should not come from someone who has approached the end of his rope, who has firmly accepted the approaching fate that has become bestowed upon him. And yet... Nick Drake had no way of knowing, unfortunately, that almost thirty plus years on, people would look to him and consider his work as something legendary and Pink Moon, for all its brevity, is legendary. Steadfast in its starkness, Nick made the most of what little he had; any more or any less would have made it meaningless. This is a prime example of getting one's point across. None of us would have stood so tall.

"Pink Moon" es una canción preciosa, pero absolutamente preciosa. Me dejó con una sensación un poco triste. "Place to be" fue igual, casí me hace llorar... ¿A quién engaño?, todo el disco es espectacular. Se volvió uno de mis favoritos y va a pasar a ser un constante en mi música.

This is my least favourite of Nick Drake's 3 albums but I still absolutely love it . It is 28 minutes of sparse acoustic arrangements with Drake's quiet soft voice but it takes you to another place. It is a beautiful record that lingers on the memory long after those 28 minutes have passed.

One of the best albums of rightful classics of folk. Nick Drake sings sweet and charming and melancholic but still mellow and inviting.

Um dos álbuns mais lindos que eu já escutei.

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. It’s beautiful yet tragic given the context behind it. I’ve absolutely loved it ever since the first time I listened to it, and it will always be one of my personal greatest albums of all time.

Nick Drake, me has hecho llorar de nuevo. 10/10. One of the best albums of all time imo.

one of my favorite albums of all time. i love it so much in fact that i have it on cd and the 2008 vinyl repressing. i own and have listened to everything in nick drake’s discography and Pink Moon is his best album by far. It’s singer-songwriter at its most stripped back, with only guitar and vocals on every track besides the intro which gets a little piano flourish on the bridge. you don’t get sufjan stevens or adrienne lenker without Pink Moon. its influence is massively understated due to how relatively obscure this album is. Nick Drake committed suicide right after this album came out, and it didn’t sell well so it was out of print for over 30 years. this is an intimate exploration of Nick Drakes mind, just you sitting alone with him and his guitar as he weaves through his thoughts about certain topics. a beautiful album by an endlessly complex person who deserved so much better. 5/5

How I love Nick Drake. It’s such a pity he only released three albums. Pink Moon is as minimalist as it gets, but I think it was executed so well. His expertise on the guitar keeps things interesting. “Which Will” and “From the Morning” are a couple favorites from the album.

R.I.P. Nick Drake😇

His best album but i like them all kind of equally

so peaceful, amazingly beautiful

It’s really unbelievable to me that Nick Drake basically went by unnoticed during his lifetime. How? Why? This is definitely his masterpiece, so heartbreakingly beautiful. Always look forward to listening to this one.

When leafs fall to the ground it’s time for good old Nick Drake and as persistent as the turn of the seasons is the grief that this genius hasn‘t gotten any older.

One of my all time favourite albums. This is my go-to album most mornings, with a cup of coffee 😊! 5/5

Музыка - это не только про техничность и про суровые тайм сигнатуры. Если песня на двух аккордах доставляет, этого более чем достаточно. А здесь доставляют все песни. Лучшая песня - Which Will.

So sweet! I love his voice

Please beware of them that stare They'll only smile to see you while Your time away And once you've seen what they have been To win the earth just won't seem worth Your night or your day Who'll hear what I say. Look around you find the ground Is not so far from where you are But not too wise For down below they never grow They're always tired and charms are hired From out of their eyes Never surprise. Take your time and you'll be fine And say a prayer for people there Who live on the floor And if you see what's meant to be Don't name the day or try to say It happened before. Don't be shy you learn to fly And see the sun when day is done If only you see Just what you are beneath a star That came to stay one rainy day In autumn for free Yes, be what you'll be. Please beware of them that stare They'll only smile to see you while Your time away And once you've seen what they have been To win the earth just won't seem worth Your night or your day Who'll hear what I say. Open up the broken cup Let goodly sin and sunshine in Yes that's today. And open wide the hymns you hide You find renown while people frown At things that you say But say what you'll say About the farmers and the fun And the things behind the sun And the people around your head Who say everything's been said And the movement in your brain Sends you out into the rain. Its just perfect for what it is. 5/5

A lovely sounding album that holds a sinister bleakness once you learn more about the artist.

I’m going for a 5. I’ve never heard of Nick Drake before this – I now know who he is, and I feel rather sad. This album, much like the Leonard Cohen album we got a while ago, feels like the weight of a life bearing on me in musical form. Unlike Leonard Cohen, it’s not a life long lived; Nick Drake died at the age of 26. I don’t quite have the words to really describe how I feel, but I do think this album struck a little closer to home than the Leonard Cohen album did, though they both made me feel the same way. The youth in his voice, and the familiarity of his voice, with a sort of Jack Johnson or John Mayer-esque tone, enhanced even more by the choice to go fully acoustic, is what really made this hit harder for me. To put it in a more succinct way, this is a true tortured poet’s department, and every line here deserves to be studied with a bit more of a critical eye. Just a beautifully haunting album, and well deserved to be on this list. Very deserving of a 5.

Love ND

This album is ridiculously ahead of its time. Completely timeless. An absolute masterpiece.

Excellent soft album I return to time and again. Want a gentle album to lie near a canal on a balmy afternoon, here you go!

Absolutely perfect acoustic guitar!! A beautiful album!! Big inspiration for one of my favorite bands the black crowes and im sure many others!!

was good

I Love Nick Drake. The first few seconds into the first tracks are instant homecoming, so serene and lovely.

Easy 5 ❤️

Heard it a million times and I love it.

I really enjoyed listening to the 'Pink Moon' album by Nick Drake. I'm glad I finally got around to listening to it because it was on my list for a while. The album has a unique charm with its beautiful melodies and thoughtful lyrics. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something different in folk music.

Great rainy day listen

A whole generation slept on this man's music.

I thought I knew this album, but there were still surprises, like Horn. The disadvantages of coming to music online, rather than on that sleek beautiful vinyl: you miss things, including the arc. The finger work is masterful, unique. The voice is a lullaby. And the story is so tragic.

Wow. I’ve never listened to Nick Drake before and I guess that’s on me. This is absolutely beautiful. It’s so sad to read about his life and struggles. If he’d been born in a more recent time he would’ve undoubtedly reached higher fame, though I’m not sure that would’ve ultimately made him any happier. Just an extraordinary talent.

I love this album. The whole thing is such a vibe. I feel like Nick Drake is one of those semi-under-the-radar artists that has a cult following but most people wouldn't know who he was. I'm not much of a fan of the singer/songwriter genre in general but he is a bit different. Particularly this album. It's dark and sort of haunting and his voice is perfect for what he's singing. It's super short which I think fits with the overall theme and mood of the album. It's simple. It's all about the emotion and lyrics. Nothing else to say, really. If you're in a mood (happy? sad? lonely? I don't know) listen to this album and it will be just what you need. 5/5

Love this! That VW commercial introduced me to him and SO glad it did

A guitar and vocals. Brilliant in its simplicity.

I like a the nick drake

Simple without being basic, peaceful without being boring, a perfect album. This album makes me feel like I'm rugged up by a window on a cold, stormy day with a hot chocolate and no responsibilities. That's exactly what I want from acoustic folk music, and I am ashamed that I've never heard of him before today. This is the first album in this journey that I've needed to write down because I know I'm going to come back and listen to the album again and again, and explore the rest of Nick Drake's work.

Loved this, started listening to it when we got Nick Drake's first album. This one is even more polished and expands on his sound. One of my favorite discoveries so far

Just the right kind of rainy day or summer evening drive home album. Simple but very well done. 5/5

just really sad but really good

hmm m m m m m FUck the sun

So sad he died so young, amazing artist, and one of my favorite albums. Makes you go through a lot of emotions!

La voix me fait penser a Piers Faccini. Vraiment un beau coup de coeur, très Midnight Shutdown.

Stunning album - my second favourite nick drake album (Bryter Later being my favourite) but this is amazing.

One of the most raw and honest portrayals of loneliness and depression. Every note Nick sings accompanied solely by his guitar is just as painful as it is beautiful. This album is eye opening by the end

absolutely stunning record.

One of my favorite albums

Solid 5 star album. This is so lovely.

Nick Drake is my imaginary husband.

This was a masterpiece.

In high school, an English teacher once told my class, “Spring has the highest suicide rates – everything’s blooming, and you’re not.” I don’t know why he said this to a room of 16 year olds, but it stuck with me, young and struggling to look her depression in the face and learn how to manage it. Now, here I am, 15 years later, screaming, crying, throwing up, sobbing to this gorgeous album by a man who tried his best to bloom with everything around him. The result is one of the most beautiful albums I’ve ever heard, and it’s a light of positivity from an artist who was so obviously trying to fight against the darkness. I’ve found a new favorite album. And yes, my therapist had to cancel our session this week, how on earth could you tell?

I've been listening to this album for a few years now. Glad to see it pop up. Excellent.

This is the type of thing that I hoped to discover more of when signing up for this project, an under-the-radar artist who should be better known and who is worth listening to. I like the chill vibe, his voice, his guitar playing and the spare production of just a voice and guitar. I'm surprised this was released in 1972, it sounds like something more recent. I enjoyed this album and would welcome more listens. I'm thinking 4.5/5 but I'll round up because I enjoyed it so much more than the majority of what's served up here.

Nick's best album. Love it.

Gentle acoustic guitar and a soft breathy voice calmly delivering the guaranteed chillest 28 minutes of any day you put it on, Pink Moon is the aural equivalent of an overpowered boulevardier on a shitty Thursday after work. Sweetly smokey, it really takes the edge off. Perfect.

exceptional

Returning to this album is like returning to your favorite secret place in a forest or in the countryside. It doesn't merely feel good. It feels essential to your soul. 5/5 - 10/10 Number of albums left to review: 246 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 326 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 193 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many other records are more important to me): 241

Really great, will add it to our rotation

Reminds me heavily of Alexi Murdoch, another favorite of mine, who I imagine was himself heavily heavily inspired by Nick Drake. This is beyond excellent and feels ahead of its time. There is something incredibly comforting about Drake's style, but this is also just so so well recorded. It's shocking to me that he went unnoticed while he was alive, but it's also so clear that he was a tortured soul. Really glad to have discovered this.

I must be a prophet. I pulled this one up on Spotify just the other day on a lark. Happy to listen to it again.

Just beautiful and other worldly.

Album I keep coming back to again and again. It’s real accessible with Nick’s guitar and the occasional pianist to let his lyrics shine through.

Beautiful and unique guitar work. So musical.

Fantastic!

Love me some Nick Drake. <3

This album reminds me of my ex-girlfriend, who cheated on me numerous times and then, once I finally broke up with her, would show up at my apartment door and sob loudly in the hallway, begging for me to let her in. Good times. Five stars.

All of Nick Drake's albums only really suffer from one thing, being too short... However, otherwise, the brilliance of his songwriting, and how far ahead of his time that he was makes him a tragic genius. I believe his impact on modern music is still unfolding, as you can even hear how modern indie guitar has some roots in what must have seemed so unusual at the timto anyone listening to Drake. What a loss for humanity and music Drake's death was.

PINK MOOON i love nick drake

I had put of listening to this for years, I think because I was under the impression it was a downer, sad and bleak. That is not at all what I found on the first listen. Yes, some sad songs, but not doom and gloom. More upbeat than I expected, great guitar work. The songs pull you in, the quiet voice forcing you to really listen. Really liked this one a lot. Looking forward to listening to his first two.

Beautifully melancholic. Favorite song: "From The Morning".

Such a pretty album. Amazing what Nick Drake accomplishes with just a guitar and a voice here. Melancholy but hopeful in an intimate setting like someone sharing their secrets with you at 2am after a couple bottles of wine.

favorite nick drake album maybe one of the most beautiful things that ever existed. just a thought. bingamoo is onis wey 🩷

First time I ever heard of this musician. This album is beautiful! Great acoustic playing, and the songs are just gorgeous and full of yearning. So authentic!

5 a beautifully haunting folk masterpiece

Classic and beautiful.

Perfection

The harmony of the guitar and vocals is great to vibe. It may hit me on the weaker side. The chilly-folky theme is very enjoyable in good moods as well as in rehab. Hell yeah

This album has been my melancholy rainy mood album for decades. Every time I hear a simple guitar based singer/songwriter album this is what I compare it to in my head. The fivest of five stars.

Headphone masterpiece. This album is chock full of content that could easily have been written in the last 5 years.

The guitar and this person's voice is wonderful, but also melancholic; I want to make note of his history/background and read more about him and this album

Hauntingly beautiful, this is his best album. It’s such a pity he wasn’t appreciated much in his own time. It is impossible for me to separate what I know of him and his death from my interpretation of his lyrics, so perhaps I see poignancy that wasn’t really there. But ultimately, if the artist can evoke a stirring reaction from the listener, it doesn’t much matter how they’ve done that, does it?

Really hard to rank the Nick Drake albums. I feel like any of the 3 could be my favorite on any day. This one flew by especially so had to listen a few times before I really started to get it. Rating: 4.6

So so so so pretty. Title track is heavenly. Just love Nick Drake’s music. His songs are so well crafted. Just enough and never too much. Perfectly edited. I like him more and more.

Really good album. I had recently heard it because it was recommended by my girlfriend. This is one that I will definitely be adding to my collection. Nice light jazz I guess, hard to describe it.

Really taken aback by this one, the music is melancholy and filled with emotion, and just sounds so beautiful

I will say it a million times and anyone who knows him will say the same thing. Nick Drake is one of the most underrated artists of his time. Each album he made was a masterpiece.

Pure beauty. 5/5

The 3rd Nick Drake's album for me on the list. The last one. And probably the best one. I think it all clicks. It's a perfect representation of the small, shy artist that has done too little to become known worldwide. He is the same of what James Dean is for movie industry. Although completly different character. Early lost star.

Absolute classic

Beautiful album. Overdue a listen. Easy five stars.

I love this album, Nick Drake’s swan song. It’s an album that I believe stands on its own despite its tragic backstory—I loved his music without the context, and with the context, it doesn’t make the music better, per se, but certainly colors it differently. I love the barebones nature of this album (as compared to Bryter Layter, for example), and the intimacy of Nick Drake’s voice and guitar is enveloping. There’s no hiding of the little imperfections in his playing or singing—both of which are beautiful as is. My favorite moment on this album is the piano part on the title track. So simple, so beautiful. Love this album.

Intimate, reduced to the max, perfectly imperfect, deep, honest. Sadly to have discovered this artist only now, but very happy to have found him after all. This album is the perfect reason for me to stay with 1001albumsgererator! Thanks a lot!

Pleasantly surprised. Recognized a couple songs from commercials.

Musical, lyrical, moody, sparse, beautiful Precursor to ‘Our Endless Numbered Days,’ ‘Veneer,‘ from a different generation Huge departure from the folk music luminaries of the time, I prefer it to Donovan, or Dylan, or Kristofferson

Great album. Never listened to it before, only heard Pink Moon. Such a talented artist who passed before his prime.

Really beautiful sparse album filled with deeply personal lyrics. After reading about Nick Drake’s tragic history some of the songs are almost hard to listen to.

I know Nick Drakes 3 albums very well. He is brilliant. I was going to give this a 4 as it is a bit dour and v short. However it is staggeringly good. Five.

Top tier Nick Drake

This is a great album. Just calms me right down. An excellent find. I find more layers to Nick Drake’s writing every time I interact with it. Something so lovely about his lines. The album feels a bit incomplete, sparse, toward the back half. You can feel the walls breathe a bit. The songwriting is just excellent throughout. 5/5

A beautiful record, very underrated. Quiet but bold, simple but complex. A real gem.

Very smooth vocals and instrumentals. Wish I had heard of him sooner.

Gloriously depressing, exactly what I needed on a day where I felt like dashing my own brains out just to shut the damned thing up. I mean, I can see why it was his last, but it's beautiful.

A thing of delicate beauty.

Brilliant guitar album that feels like a beautiful road trip

Ok, Bryter Later wasn’t for me but I completely get the appeal of Pink Moon now. It’s occasionally eerie or a bit ominous but not depressing, to my ears, Nick’s mental state notwithstanding. Just very pretty, succinct and somewhat hypnotic. I’ve already found myself returning to this album a few times and discovered more to like with each listen, so I think I’m gonna have to give it a rare ‘surprise 5’.

Such a short and powerful album. As stripped down as you can get - guitar, vocal, no fancy effects, so raw. Breathtaking imagery and a great storyteller. All the songs are so good, such a shame this was his final work. Easy 5 stars.

I truly loved this one Full of lovely songs Hear it nonstop the whole day

I listened to the album twice.

One of my favorites until now. Chill folk guitar. Love it.

This is an incredible album. This album is why I wanted to start this project. Immensely compelling songwriting coming from a man and his guitar. I know now where some of my favorite modern artist drew inspiration. Highlights include Place To Be, Parasite, and From The Morning. Time to listen 1,000 more times.

Excellent album for getting in touch with your shadow self. But if you don’t like a little depresh to your introspesh-ction it might be a little heavy. Wonderful vocal and solo accompaniment. Great songwriting.

Once hearing the first strums of the acoustical guitar, I knew I would really enjoy this album. Nick Drake has a great voice and variety.

i mean, it's pink moon. as solo acoustic albums go it's basically this and elliott smith's s/t in the pantheon. beautiful music with a bleak and terrifying heart. "things behind the sun" is an all-timer.

Revisited after listening to Nick Drake's debut album. Superb.

Hidden gem. What a story of a life and I’ll never listen to Life in A Northern Town the same.

I've been purposefully not listening to this album in hopes that it would show up on this list. Fives Leaves Left is the reason I continue to listen to albums on this list. Drake's Better Layter wasn't quite as good, but I am looking forward to hearing his final album. I hope it lives up to my own personal hype. Nick Drake was so far ahead of his time. I'm sorry that his candle was snuffed out so soon in his young life.

All time album. Stands up track by track and as a full listen.

Pink mooooon is on its way…. Wow, not gonna lie, this album made me shed a few tears along the way , touching. This album reminds me of one of my all time favorites—Pink Floyd’s “Animals” which came out around the same time…also from the UK. Drake has a haunting and yet wholesome voice … definitely not an album I’d workout to but rather sit back with eyes closed to be taken on a ride… I think Danny Hasbun first put me on to this album, and I’ve been a fan ever since 👏🏼 Track 2: Guitar chord progressions are ahead of his time… I could feel some of the 90s northwest grunge being birthed out some of this vibe Song “Horn” , doesn’t it sound like RHCP “under the bridge” could seamlessly follow that riff at the end of the track? (I ended up trying it out… ehh so so ) “Things behind the sun” woah , this is my kind of jam …. This would sound so sick if covered by Metallica or System of a Down , ya feel me?? But it’s a great track just as it is…. Beautiful 🤩 His guitar work/chord progressions coupled with his vocals are soooo METAL 🤘🏼

Absolutely loved it. I had never heard about Nick Drake, and I am sad that he was gone so soon. What a talent. Beautiful guitar play and beautiful tunes.

Loved this

Been liked this album. I hate the album cover though

It’s Nick Drake, come on. Delicate, beautiful, lovely. I’ve heard most of these songs before - in other playlists or in movies or commercials - but it was wonderful to listen to them all together. In fact, I listened to it twice all the way through. The exact type of music you want to listen to on a rainy Sunday morning.

A truly remarkable album.

For the most part, very calm and pretty. I think I actually prefer the sound of just Nick and his guitar to the other albums that include the string sections. Both are nice, sure, but I feel like this is closer to the artist's vision when writing the song. Gotta mention there's one or two (short) tracks that strike me as a bit odd, but I'll give it a pass as the rest of the album is a treat.

It had been a while since I last listened to Pink Moon. I had forgotten just how wonderful this album is. In Pink moon we get an incredibly intimate and thread bare collection of songs that sound as though they are coming directly from Nicks soul. Despite only his voice and his guitar, there is limitless depth to these songs, made even more poignant by his untimely death only two years later. It is a real tragedy that we will never know what other music Nick could have shared with the world, but at least we have Pink Moon.

Wow! What a gem. I didn't think I had ever listened to Nick Drake before and really enjoyed this album, but then I realised I had heard one of his tracks on the Garden State Soundtrack (excellent film and soundtrack!) The music feels before it's time, and akin to the the music of Elliott Smith, José González, Emilíana Torrini and alike from the late 90s/early00s, I'm sure they must have been inspired by Nick. The guitar is warm and the singing is so full of sadness and soulfulness - a beautiful mix (not sure what it means that I'm always drawn to sad music written by depressed musicians!?). I'll be listening to this one again - thanks 1001! Fave Track: Things behind the sun

extremely good

Nick Drake’s spare, sparse, bare Pink Moon is a kind of quiet wonder, the work of an artist who had retreated so far into the dark abyss of his own mind that attempting to find an exit was an exercise in futility. Pink Moon is an exercise in futility. over 28 minutes, you can hear the sense of abject acceptance of his despair so overwhelming that it clouds the entire experience. and yet, turn the volume up high enough, and in the silence between strums there is something akin to hope, a funhouse mirror version of a tunnel-ending light. even the central metaphor of the title track “Pink Moon” (by far one of the greatest pieces of music i have ever heard, bar none) is rife with that tension: Drake says that the pink moon will get us, no matter how hard we may fight. no one stands tall enough to outrun it. whether this is a metaphor for sadness and gloom or a metaphor for rebirth, one can’t say for sure, but Drake sings it with resignation in his voice, the kind that suggests he is speaking from personal experience of fighting and failing, of being swallowed whole by the pains of the heart and mind despite his best efforts. but as he echos along “it’s a pink moon”, the piano comes in startling, unexpected, but light and tender. is that not the sound of beauty? the sound of angels and doves and flowers in the spring? is that not the sound of hope? there is no more piano on the rest of the record — the darkness seems to overtake, succeed. but for a brief moment there, look how much the sun shone.

I knew Nick Drake’s story already and I know my teenage daughter likes him. How did I never get round to listening? Just lovely

This is a great acoustic album. Never listened to it before, added to my playlist.

Awesome album....timeless.

So good but so sad

Easy 5 stars. not much to say. it’s fantastic.

This album is too consistent in tone and concise to not be one of the best ever. Moody, with dark vocals, but still bright, uniquely played guitar. No album conveys as strong of a feeling as this. A magnificent record. 5 Stars

Oh, another record I've adored for years. It was lovely to get to re-visit this one! It makes me feel all cozy inside.

Dit was al zeker en vast een album dat ik al vaak heb geluisterd, maar door wat meer achtergrondinformatie en aandachter te luisteren heb ik de genialiteit ervan meer ingezien. Prachtige songwriting en tijdloos.

I really liked this album. It felt like open mic night. I could go along with the swag of the music without having heard any of it before. Short and sweet.

This record is so good. I've been searching for a copy on vinyl for ages. It's so sad and warming at the same time.

Goated.

Amazing voice. This is probably in my top 5 just below Jeff Buckley. Why do legends leave so soon 😭😭

My only complaint is that this album is too short and there's not more Nick Drake. His previous album was not at all like this, and he doesn't have any later albums (at least on Spotify). Bummer. This was some really good, chill stuff. 4.5.

This was a beautiful album that was recorded so intimately that I felt like I was in the room with Drake. This was my first of his recordings and it clicked immediately. Then I learned his story and I gotta stop falling for musicians who kill themselves. I considered listening to the other two records immediately, but I think I will spread them out.

Dude was a depressed genius.

Нежно очень, люблю такое. И в настроение попало

A gem. Understated and brilliant

An incredible album from a tragic soul. Much like Van Gogh, Nick Drake suffered for his art and never saw the fruits of his labor during his lifetime. He influenced many of my favorite artists though, including myself. Could listen to this album over and over again. Standout Tracks: Pink Moon, Place to Be, Horn, From the Morning

Big fan of this one.

I had never heard of Nick Drake or any of his songs. I was pleasantly surprised by this one!

Perfect

ovo je himna jeseni. imam ga na vinylu. definitivno ako si jesenska osoba, ako imalo imaš osjećaja itd, ovo je za tebe.

Lying on the white couch in Průhonice hearing the indistinct chatter of the adults at the Thanksgiving table across the room. The room is filled with a rich wood-scented smell of antique furniture and of food. An old TV next to a carved oriental-themed dresser with rural imagery shines with a dim blue retro light as the DVD symbol keeps bouncing off the sides of the screen. Wrapped up in a fur blanket I lay on the side of the couch next to a wall socket holding my tattered cable waiting for my phone to charge. Filip comes to check up on the tv every once in a while from whiches speakers there comes music, calm, soothing. Uneaten food rests on the table as I slowly fall asleep to wake up on the backseats of the car turning into our street with the orange glowing streetlights pleasantly shining into my eyes. I get carried to bed, covered by a blanket and I drift off once again. Life is simple, good. 9/10 as background. Evokes dreams and memories

It totally fit the mood of getting ready for nultá hodina while it's still dark outside. It's a wonderful album, beautiful in its simplicity. Would listen again.

I don't think this album clicks for me like it does for other, but I can absolutely see why it hits so hard for those people that do get it. Very ahead of its time at parts in terms of the atmosphere it created, and pretty cool someone leaning into more atmospheric music during a very songwritey era

Loved it. A little too short. It clocks in at under 30 minutes. Great early modern folk. 5/5

This is an album that just makes you feel sad. It's a hollow feeling, but in a good way, which I don't know if I've experienced in an album before. It just is so obvious Drake is going through something terrible, and over fifty years later you can't do anything but sit there and listen to his sorrows. It still has this melancholic feeling to it which could make you feel perhaps more uplifted, but like getting gut punched by a flower. It really helps that the album is short, because it does get a bit repetitive, just being Drake and his guitar, but it still is the perfect representation of what folk music would be going through in the coming years, and Nick Drake was just too ahead of the curb to know it. Fantastic record, and a folk magnum opus.

Perfection.

Brilliant in its simplicity. Really enjoyed this album, glad I can say I've heard of Nick Drake and listened to his music.

Very melodramatic, easy listen. Folk, singer songwriter

This is one of the greatest albums. So influential, so wonderful.

An intimate and beautiful album by a tortured soul. Nick Drake's masterpiece - one of those albums that are simply impossible to hate.

4.5/5 This is so good and chill, I'm surprised I haven't heard anything by Nick Drake before, it's right up my alley. It doesn't have the same highlight tracks that some of my other high-rated albums so far have (Paranoid, The Man Comes Around), but it's a very complete piece. Best track: Parasite

I'm depressed :'(

I see Nick Drake, I give 5 stars

Sounds like 90's rock but from the 70's?? I'll be revisiting for sure

Pink Moon by Nick Drake is a critically acclaimed album that is widely regarded as a masterpiece of contemporary folk music . The album was recorded in just two nights, with Drake accompanying himself only on acoustic guitar, except for the title track, on which he overdubs a brief, lovely piano part . The album is known for its sparse, haunting, and introspective sound, and it is one of the most musically stripped-down and emotionally naked albums ever recorded . The lyrics of Pink Moon are often attributed to Drake's mental state, and the album is a deeply personal and introspective reflection of his inner struggles and turmoil . The album's simple and raw lyrics, combined with Drake's silky vocals and acoustic guitar, create a sense of melancholy and introspection that continues to resonate with audiences today . Overall, Pink Moon is a powerful and emotionally resonant album that showcases Drake's immense talent as a songwriter and musician . While it may not have the best songs of his career, it is easily his most intimate and personal work . The album's themes of isolation, social commentary, and spirituality are conveyed through Drake's poetic and evocative lyrics, which are complemented by his delicate guitar playing and haunting vocals . Pink Moon is a must-listen for fans of contemporary folk music and anyone who appreciates raw, emotionally honest songwriting

I can imagine this album had a huge influence on Radiohead

Me ha gustado mucho.

I loved this all the way through. Felt like it was too short so I listened to it a second time!

So far my fav, for a gloomy day

Love this just as much as the first time. Thanks VW for injecting it back into popular culture!

Great album. Reminds me of Erik May. Always enjoyed Nick Drakes simple folksy music.

It’s not necessarily something I would have chosen to put on, but I will definitely be returning to this one. A beautiful, short and gentle album by a more than troubled individual. The simplicity is something to be appreciated - just the listener, and Drake. Offers real insight about a man who had no interest in the fame or promoting himself, and for that alone a pleasure to listen to. It’s a great shame he never witnessed what success he had posthumously. Songs added to playlist: - Know

So beautiful my god

Great chill background album.

Always have time for Nick Drake. Good music for a Saturday morning.

Folk, introspection ambiance

Gentle and beautiful. This is gonna be the second 5 star so far. Oddly enough, both folk albums, which I don't usually like. This one is heartbreaking in all the right ways. I don't love every song, but the few I do are unbelievably pretty and sad. Things Behind The Sun is my standout favorite, and I found myself listening to it over and over after hearing it the first time. It's captivating, but simple. The guitar lines are exactly what I look for in dark, sad, beautiful chord structures. Parasite and Harvest Breed are also both great tracks in a similar vein. I'll revisit this one frequently, for sure.

Hauntingly beautiful. This album has been the soundtrack to hard times for me

I read that this is the Nick Drake record that most begin with, and I am no exception. For me though, writing something about this record is like trying to write something about someone I've loved forever; I still love them as much as I ever have, if not more since our love has matured over time, but it's really hard to see them with new eyes and articulate that in a way that's useful to anyone else. I think the best that I can offer is that one can't listen to this album and not feel something, and isn't that precisely why so many of us turn to music, to feel something?

Grandfather to Iron and Wine, Elliot Smith, and all Wes Anderson soundtracks. Music for driving away from your girlfriends dorm after breaking up with her.

Finding this album in my college days would have fucked me up. Back then I was really into contemporary sad-boy artists like Elliott Smith, Galaxie 500, and Pedro the Lion. Even if this album was unknown to those guys it certainly touches the same parts of the psyche as the best of their work. The spartan, clear production and concise confessional songs make the whole album feel very near and honest. The rare hooks highlight engaging melodies that are just enough to hang Drake's bedroom vocals on.

this album made me want to be a upside down caterpillar spinning my cocoon

I mean, it's a classic right. Absolutely stunningly beautiful and forever one of the greatest singer songwriter records.

Prachtig. Met het hele levensverhaal van de beste man erbij een enorm tragische zwanenzang. Breekbaar en (mede daardoor) zo mooi.

A sparse and haunting album that is the prettiest suicide note ever. Great guitar playing

Melancholic, beautiful, sad

What a beautiful album from such a tortured soul. An incredible voice and masterful playing, it’s a shame that his career was short and relatively unknown.

Absolutely nothing fancy about this, and its simplicity is a breath of fresh air. Just hypnotically pretty acoustic guitar, a world-weary voice, and some great songwriting. This seems like the most relaxed and least self-aware of his three albums - like he got the confidence to just do his songs and leave it at that. His voice sounds very natural here, and he has the confidence to leave many of these songs under the 3-minute mark. None of this needs any padding or embellishment, because it's pure stellar music-making. I probably say this every time I give one of his album's a proper listen... but I think this one might be my favourite Nick Drake album. 5*

Gentle and smooth. Interesting melodies and timing that keep the ear engaged. Is this Elliott Smith’s dad or something? I thoroughly enjoyed this album.

…and now I, too, am a lifelong Nick Drake fan. I am aware of Nick’s story and the majority opinion of the context of this album. But frankly, it’s easy and a little lazy to view Pink Moon through a lens of mental health. I think it’s an unfortunate association that detracts from a beautiful, perfectly rendered work of art which can also be described as delicate; not depressed, or sensitive rather than sad. These quiet songs allow the listener time and space for appreciation without distraction and without digging through layers of something that might have become overly produced, had Nick achieved some of the success he missed out on while living. I’ve resisted the temptation of listening to Nick’s two earlier albums so I could appreciate Pink Moon on its own merits. Maybe once I’ve auditioned the other two I’ll feel differently about the tone and setting of these songs. Either way it’s been so nice to have all weekend with this album before being served my next selection. What a treasure.

This is beautiful. I don't love the lower range of his voice, but I feel so comfortable listening to him. Roads is an amazing song. I've actually been hoping to start a new playlist for my fall vibes, and Roads got to start it for me. An amazing album. Intimate but comfortable, relaxing but emotional. I loved every song.

Underrated singer/songwriter. Gone too soon. Great album

Interesting I loved it , so calm

One of the all time greats, just a beautiful record front to back

Great! Coffee hose music couldnt tell that the album was from the 70's. Very chill jam band sound

unbelievable talent

Another Nick Drake, another 5. Perfection.

Original sad dad music

5 no notes, if you don't tear up listening to this ur a psycho faves: place to be, parasite

Didn’t know this album but wauw ❤️

One of the best morning album of all time. Pretty melancholy album too

acoustic porn

I know this album well. He’s only recorded one bad song and it’s not on this album.

AMAZXINg

it was 5*s when i listened to it 20 years ago. it's 5*s now. just sublime

Maravilloso. No se como no lo conocía hasta ahora.

нежность, тоска, усталость

pink moon by nick drake was sitting in an old attic corner waiting patiently for me to dust it off and realize i was missing a crucial piece of my soul

Great sad guitar music, proto elliot smith

Beautiful acoustic tunes for sadboy hours

well this is just a perfect album in every way

a soft and wispy acoustic gem of an album that oozes beauty, nostalgia, and a profound sadness. terrific stuff

Great find. Amazing folk album.

Me ha gustado mucho.

Excellent album. The guitar is so nice and relaxing and his vocals are very soothing. He's a sad story though.

Aw hell yeah, love Pink Moon. One of the greatest folk albums of all time? I think so. Just a beautiful album, it makes me feel my feelings and stuff.

Good shit

Absolute classic, but I may be biased as this has been a fav since I was about 16

Thought I didn't know his music but instantly recognised the title track. Loved the album, definitely one I will listen to many more times

Intimate and melancholy - I had a good cathartic cry triggered by this album. Thanks, Nick Drake.

I’ve listened to this album dozens of times over the years.

Masterpiece.

Incredible album. Having it come up in the list so close to an Elliott Smith album heightens their obvious similarities but also reveals some pretty major differences. Smith usually sounds so plaintive and desperate; Drake sounds so much more comfortable and settled, and this is somehow even more sad. A perfect twenty-eight minutes.

i didn’t know i loved this album till today

WONDERFULL

Really grew on me Favorite Tracks: Pink Moon, Road 4.5-5/5

One of my all time favourite albums. An immediate and automatic 5 stars.

Beautiful, syncopated, dreamy tunes I’ve never heard before. Remarkable story of Nick Drake.

Short album at only 28 minutes. Nice sound.
