Another day another Jazz album. Look, I get that people like Jazz and I'm not totally against it, it's just not something that I would put on to purposefully listen to and enjoy. Background music? Sure throw on some Jazz, but to sit and listen and try to dissect a Jazz album is very low on the list of things I want to do with my time.

It was good background music, some of the tracks were quite nice. Kathy's Waltz had nice flow and embodied the sound of the album well. It made great concentration music and I would definitely return to it (though maybe skip the first track since it's much higher energy than the rest). But would I listen to it on its own? Eh, probably not.

This is the best jazz album so far and I definitely prefer the more chill vibe to the loud big band style of jazz, but I still mainly just find it boring. Favorite: Take Five

Wasn't in the mood for this unfortunately

Time Out is one of those albums that probably blew minds when it dropped — odd time signatures, cool jazz vibe, all that. But listening to it now? It just doesn’t hit the same. I can respect what the Dave Brubeck Quartet was going for, but in my opinion, it just hasn’t stood the test of time. It feels more like background music than something that really grabs you. Technically solid, sure, but there’s not much here that makes me want to come back to it. Maybe it was groundbreaking in its day, but now it mostly just feels dated and kind of flat.

This was unoffensive hotel lobby music. It was mostly upbeat and didn't go off on many tangents. You wouldn't necessarily notice it but would also be okay if someone changed it. I had heard Take Five and Blue Rondo before, and they were both enjoyable. Strange Meadowlark was good and it reminded me of music in a Charlie Brown movie. Maybe it is just the season but I feel like a lot of the songs gave me undertones of Christmas songs. Reading the explanation it is a big deal album, broke a lot of records for jazz, but honestly I am not sure why. I would almost rather listen to something that is bad and leaves an impression, as opposed to something okay that doesn't leaves little impression.

I might appreciate this album more if I had a better understanding of jazz but mostly I find this lacking in energy and just plain boring. First off... jazz without horns is like a sandwich without bread to me. I mean REAL horns... like trumpet and trombone. The alto sax doesn't cut it. I thought it was a damn clarinet. I really like the main theme parts of Blue Rondo and Take Five. I just don't really care for how they evolve it. Which leaves me feeling like the songs have "moments", but I don't really like it overall. It's boring even for background music.

Jazz album. Easy listening I guess. I probably wouldn't return to it; not girlypop enough for me. I don't have an ear for jazz; half the time I was listening I couldn't tell when one song ended and another began. Pretty sure listening to this ruined my Youtube algorithm too.

Back to back jazz, awesome…

Instrumental jazz isn't really my thing but I appreciate the art of it. I think I also resent it because of how difficult I found it to play. HATED playing Take Five but as always it's such an enjoyable listen. Apart from that song, my favourite was Three to Get Ready.

well-known endof50s jazz album with one evergreen, the other tracks.. pretty irritating

This is excellent background music and while I can certainly appreciate that this would have been groundbreaking in 1959, it's just not engrossing enough to warrant deeper listening. Even the more sprightly 'Everybody's Jumping' has me firmly glued to the spot. I will say that this is probably the kind of album you'd throw on while playing games, especially 'pick up sticks'. That happens to be my favourite track on this record, if mostly for the way it evokes memories of the ' Pink Panther theme. Most memorable: Pick up sticks Least memorable: Just about everything else. Overall score: 5.6/10

To me, a non jazz listen, this just sounds like fancy peanut music. Hopefully I can laugh at this review if I ever get into jazz music. 2/5

Apparently I was playing this a little loud because my co-worker mentioned she enjoyed my music from yesterday. So Dave Brubeck gets a thumbs up from Deb! I wonder if that means she has disliked everything else up to this point? She sits just outside my office so I have to believe she's heard a lot of my music. Anyway, Jazz just not my thing. I could pretend, but I won't. Nothing adverse and he kept it short, but it's just not anything I enjoy. I'll give you 2.5 because Deb liked it. 2.5

Jazz isn’t for me

Was quite interested to see this here, the title track is one of the few records my parents had when I was growing up. The album as a whole is quite pleasant, but not anything I would expect to buy. Gotta be worth a high 2, possibly more. Will think on it.

Take Five has entered the International Canon of tunes that everyone has been fed subliminally and knows aurally - even if they think they don’t. I could have happily listened to five bars of that song rather than five and a half minutes… the rest I appreciate rather than enjoy!

Take Five is an all-time great. The rest have their moments, but I don't love Brubeck as a soloist. Some tunes were even giving me a headache.

Never heard of them, so I didn't know what to expect, but I'll be honest I was NOT in the mood for an instrumental only album. But putting that aside, great songs, but very 'that jazzy songs that play in the background of some fancy restaurant'. Talented musicians though that's the only reason it's not getting just 1 star to not disrespect them!

Fun, technically impressive and cool jazz for general listeners. Plays a lot with time signatures; I saw a live version of this album from a tribute band and really enjoyed it. Feels like a glass of ice water on a grand piano.

I remain convinced that jazz functions perfectly well, great even!, as background music and totally fails when "actively" listened to. This is the case here, this would be cool in a bar when you're hanging out. On its own, it's got precious little going for it. The songs feel like they have no structure so you never know where you are. Is it still the same song? Are you 20 minutes into the album? Who knows, certainly not me.

I remember my Dad having this album when I was a pre-teen. It has it's moments but I didn't particularly like it then and my opinion hasn't changed.

I remember when Simon Cowell used “elevator music” as an insult on American Idol. Well, here we have it. Everybody Jumpin’, while an obvious predecessor to “Jump On It”, just doesn’t have the same energy. Calming and fine to have in the background, but nothing I’ll be returning to with any measurable amount of excitement.

When it started I felt like I was in 101 Dalmatians. The first few songs were definitely the poppiest, with discernible, catchy riffs. The remainder really blended together for me. It’s timeless though, everything from the production quality on felt solid and clean. Unfortunately, I feel like this kind of album is played out now, just because it has been parodied so much in pop culture. I can imagine when it came out it was groundbreaking though.

This was some perfectly fine jazz that I'll never listen to again. I didn't dislike it, and I'm trying to be open-minded towards genres that I wouldn't seek out on my own, but I can't really say I enjoyed this. 2.5.

Cool concept behind the album (uncommon jazz time signatures) that I'm nowhere near technically-adept enough to truly appreciate. Nothing offensive or unlikeable about this music, but it's a bore. I do enjoy the "cool" jazz tonality a lot more than traditional jazz. Favorite track: Take Five (the only one Brubeck didn't write lol!)

I really want to be *into* jazz, but it hasn't quite clicked for me yet. I remember learning about this album in a college music class, and how iconic "Take Five" is. So as iconic as this album is, I struggle to give it a high rating for me, but I can understand its cultural significance for the time. Establishing some criteria for going forward for me: 5-all bangers, top to bottom a great album 4-mostly bangers (75%?), would happily revisit this album 3-like about half of it, but not a standout album 2-only like a couple of songs 1-dislike the album overall, hardly any songs I like

It’s just jazz music. No lyrics so I’m not that surprised I didn’t like it. However…..! I feel like it’s the exact right kind of boring that would probably be really effective to listen to while studying. So I may actually listen to it again.

Urgh jazz. At least they knew how to play their instruments and it wasn't a load of screeching instruments drowning each other out. It was short too which helped

Not really a jazz fan, but this album has the classic "Blue Rondo à la Turk" and the unforgettable "Take Five"; the rest of the album - meh!

With this I’ve now had three albums from the 1950s all three of which are jazz records… This album really isn’t my kind of music, if there’s one thing I’ve learned from the generator all instrumental music will quite possibly never work with me, all if it lacks the emotion that can come with a half decent lead singer but I can appreciate the talent that’s put in and I bet without a singer to fuck it all up album’s are probably funner to make when all instrumental. Most of the tracks kinda passed through in one ear out the other but I think I’ve actually herd take five before so that one stuck with me a tiny bit more. But while they all passed through in one ear out the other I must admit that the playing on here is brilliant! It’s still only a 2/5 for me but for anyone who likes this kinda music this album should be an essential.

This made me fall asleep. I would love to listen to this live but not a recording.

Another hard to rate album. I guess its a important jazz album to fans and musicians in the genre but I only enjoyed it in chunks and would often find myself just unable to focus on it. It's not bad really. It would probably make a good background album for atmosphere but I could never find myself listening to it for pleasure. A 2 I guess but it really isn't so bad.

I don't usually listen to Jazz so this is definitely out of my wheelhouse but I've enjoyed the other Jazz records I've gotten on here more than this one. The only track that really stuck out to me was "Take Five". Most of it kind faded into the background. Per wikipedia I guess this is considered "cool jazz" with relaxed tempos and a lighter tone. That makes sense - probably just not the right Jazz for me (I typically favor more intense music). Your milage may vary.

Never heard of this but 1959? that was a while ago. Trying to guess by the cover... maybe jazz? or "swing"? Ok it's jazz. Bit wacky, bit experimental, it's ok. End thoughts: I pretty much forgot it was going. That isn't exactly the mark of a good album. It didn't shit me, but it was completely forgettable. 2/5.

I actually really like Jazz. Jazz musicians understand their craft at a level most people will never appreciate. You have to really know music and your instrument in order to step on stage without knowing what you're going to do - if that makes sense. BUT - to me - Jazz shouldn't really be recorded. It's meant to be listened to live. AND, if you're going to record it, it should be a live recording, in my humble opinion. I like "dirty" jazz - I want to hear mistakes and guys talking to each other while they're playing. Dave and the rest of the quartet are truly talented musicians, but this seemed over-produced for a jazz album - and maybe a little self-indulgent (almost half the songs featured only Dave, not the quartet).

Álbum jazz, puramente instrumental. No es un estilo que escuche o me guste demasiado. Se me vuelve repetitivo y hasta un poco predecible. Es música de ambiente, que encaja muy bien en escenas tipicas de películas/series de los años 60 donde hay una banda tocando en un bar. Podria ser algo que suene en Mrs. Maisel. Take Five es el single más escuchado por haber aparecido en algunas películas. No es muy relevante.

Quite a distracting album - jumpy and felt almost patchy in parts. I understand that's the style of the music but it wasn't to my taste. Would not listen again by choice.

Apart from Take 5 just noodly jazz!

I hate this album!! I will tell you why. Its boring. None of them are engaging soloists. Particularly Paul Desmond, he just sounds like he's practicing scales. Take Five, the best selling jazz song of all time, is practically one groove for the whole song. There is so much way better and much more interesting jazz out there. I could go full elitist and talk about how none of them have ever heard of outside playing, but Erroll Garner, Cannonball Adderley, and Oscar Peterson prove that that doesn't matter. Blue Rondo is a great tune though, I wish it had better players on it. What fucks me off far more about this record however is its mythos. Its the best selling jazz record of all time at over 2M copies, and its so often held up as incredibly innovative and formative for the genre. Anybody who knows anything about jazz history knows that that is just not true! The harmony is ofc completely standard, and the time signature stuff is not even new either! The real reason that this album sold so well and is so well regarded, and again anybody who knows anything about jazz history can tell you this, is because Dave Brubeck (and 2/3 of his band) was white!!! The record and radio industries at the time were segregated (even in the north!) and it was near impossible for black artists (who invented jazz and had been doing everything on this record and so so so much more for decades) to break out into the American mainstream because of severe systemic racism and segregation. This album isn't good, don't listen to it, stop lapping up the racist lie, and fuck Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond culture vultures I spit on them

Probably the best jazz record thus far from the list...but still not great. It has the cool vibe and I think I've heard "Take Five" before which carries the album with its sleuthy tone. The Dave Brubeck Quartet is certainly better than The Bill Evans Trio...extra guy helps I guess. Not too mad about taking some Time Out to hear this one but it's still only getting a 1.2 star rating.

The thing about jazz is when you listen to it, at the beginning, it sounds like pure shite. But if you are patient and you get to the middle of track, you slowly start to see that it is still pure shite. And finally when you get to the end, you see that you were wrong. It is more even more shite than you thought. The whole genre is pure shite ya'll sophisticated-wannabes!!!!
