Reviews (page 12 of 14)

Reminds me of the tunes Granny would have playing in the mornings on the old radio in the kitchen

Pleasant, archetypal jazz. "Take Five" familiar from millions of adverts, so I found it a bit worn, but all the other tracks very nice.

As we say here in Brazil, this album has “musics to listen in elevators” because it is smooth and calm. Great album for having dinner with friends.

Jazz really ain't my thing... apart from Take Five, the rest is unknown to me... i just can't keep my head to it, the music goes into the background and i forget i'm listening. For that reason still three start, as it is not abominable.

I've already listened to this album, I really like the coolness of the 5-4 rhythm and how Brubeck explicitly did it because he felt too many popular songs were not challenging enough. And it still became an instrumental hit in 1959.

Not bad. Some obvious stand outs

This feels like music Frazier would call dynamic and exciting. But it wasn't really for me. I want more energy with my jazz. I probably won't come back to this.

Good background music. Would be bored in 10 minutes if I saw this live. I’m sure it’s great fun for the quartet, and gives talented aged-out high school band members a space. But not something I’d seek out on the radio… maybe the morning after a bender.

Study playlists have made me a bit tired of Take Five but dug. I think Sufjan may have gotten some riffs from these tracks.

Yeah fine probably should be here, but super safe jazz

perfect background music for putting together ikea furniture

Not a Jazz fan. Mostly because to me Jazz seems to be mostly about technique and very little about emotion. As much as I generaalt detest punk for it's total lack of any technique you have to respect the emotion (and the fact that at least they are not James Hetfield) One reviewer here made a comparison to a MIDI file and I think that's spot on, not a good thing. Another reviewer said he (or she) forgot this was still playing after the first track and I sort of feld the same. When I am listening to these albums on here usually at the end of the evening I am deliberately doing something else too. To see if the music can demand my full attention, this like at lot of the albums on here failed to do this. I don't hate or even dislike this music so 3 stars.

Calming but a bit boring

Decent jazz album Top tracks: Take Five, Kathy’s Waltz

It has its time and place. Not for everyday use.

Smooth.

It was good. Not sure the genre. Rock? But nothing I’d put on again.

cooking together on a friday evening with this playing in the background >>

Ahh... classics of odd rhythms

Väldigt mysig! Var väldigt trevligt att läsa till men tyckte inte annars att den var så speciell så albumet får 3/5 stjärnor! Favorit låten från albumet var Everybodys jumpin’

With few exceptions, I despise jazz. I always think of Paul F Tompkins very accurate description of it as music “that is defying you to like”. HOWEVER, even though I’m not exactly going out of my way to listen to it, I like this record. Some of that is definitely familiarity, but more of it that the songs are relatively compact, and they have (the jazz version of) hooks. Take Five actually feels designed to get stuck in your head, rather than the standard jazz approach of taking seemingly random chord changes and using them as background music while the (I’m sure very talented) people in the band do the musical equivalent of jerking off at you. Jazz is fun to play, but I rarely find it to be particularly fun to listen to. Typically, whatever germ of a melody, chord progression, or groove exists within a song is fully overwhelmed by the compulsion to “add color” by dressing up the melodies with chromatic runs until they’re no longer memorable, adding dissonant extensions to chord progressions until it’s impossible to tell if it’s a progression and not just a random assortment of notes played in sequence, and inserting rhythmic hiccups into grooves until an average listener can no longer tap their feet to it. This album certainly does some of that, but it’s generally tasteful. Even with embellishments, the melodies still stick with you, the chord progressions have forward propulsion, and the odd time signatures (especially in the records two most famous songs) add to, rather than detract from the songs. Also, not to shill for Apple Music, but the Atmos mix of this record songs phenomenal, and it’s especially evident in the drums. Honestly, even when my interest in a song would wane a bit, the music is so pleasant sonically that it kept me engaged.

Relaxing music and a good stress reliever! I especially enjoyed the vocal range of the singer! 3.5

Repotted my plants while listening to this. Perfect album for that occasion

When you go to Sunday brunch at a hotel, this is what is on in the background

Mellow

It's so damn hard for me to rate jazz. It's a decent and entertaining album which gave me chill vibes, but yeah I just don't ever know if a certain album within the genre is better or worse. Giving this a not so confident, average 3 I guess...

Great background music

Genre: Jazz Instruments: 4/5 Modern Translation: 2/5 Dance Potential: 1/5 Listening Location: walking around Sydney Heard it before: yes Favourite Song: Strange Meadow Lark Made me feel: like I was in a Woody Alan film walking around Sydney. I remember Britton playing this album over Sunday pancakes. Talented musicians but probably wouldn’t listen again.

Very consistent and enjoyable. Favourite track: Strange Meadow Lark.

One of the main ways I recognize that I’m getting older is that I have been appreciating jazz music more and more. I’m not quite to the point that I’d go to a jazz club to hear it live but I’m always willing to put it on while getting some work done. Some of these songs have even been playing in the background my whole life with how often they’re used in media. That’s what this album will become for me, along with more of the quartet’s music. A solid three. Nothing earth-shattering but an enjoyable listen.

Album excelente, só com musicas instrumentais

Piano jazz. Stand-out: Take Five

I like Jazz, but this only really has one number stand out to me. Again, wishing this was in a scale of 10 instead of 5. It's closer to a 3.5 but it's definitely not a 4.

Talented musicians. Enjoyed the listen. Sounded a bit Christmas-y in some moments. 2.5/5

A very relaxing listen while making food Very much enjoyed 3.5

1- immediately feel like im at a ball, is this entire album just gonna be no lyrics 2- i feel like staring out at a lake w pretty fair lights hanging over a bridge when im wearing a green dress while listening to this. i have not watched la la land but i feel like this belongs in a 60's version of it 3- i think this one has lyrics.. nvm either spotify baited me or the music is talking 4- this song is how i felt playing stardew valley 50% of the day during the most important exam period of my life 5- idk who kathy is but she probbaly waltzed tf out of this song, WHAT THE HELL 1:15 TIL LIKE 1:21 SOUNDED SO FAMILIAR IT LIKE MADE A BRAIN CELL DISINTEGRATE AND FORGET WHERE IK IT FROM. im gonna look ts up so i dont go insane.. turns out i know it from a trap remix 6- atp im convinced i can hear what the trumpet is saying 7- i feel like im a side character wearing a yellow shirt in a children story book where the main character is a fluffy bear wearing overalls and a farmer hat fs not listening to this again but it was a very imaginative experience

Good jazz is good. 5-4-2

Classic

Blue Rondo à la Turk - 7.5/10 Strange Meadow Lark - 7.5/10 Take Five - 7.5/10 Three to Get Ready - 7.5/10 Kathy’s Waltz - 7.5/10 Everybody’s Jumpin’ - 7.5/10 Pick up Sticks - 7.5/10 TOTAL -52.5/70

It was alright for jazz

I really like the smooth sound.

Don’t quite know why but Brubeck’s never been my guy. Guess he’s a little genteel for me, a lover of Bird, Coltrane, Monk, Cecil Taylor, etc.

Take 5 was great, the rest of the album was fun and jazzy background.

Someone said "Take Five", Dave Brubeck thought they said "change lives"

Good old timey jazz

Not a fan of jazz, but I definitely recognized some of this and enjoyed it!

Super jazzy jazz. Ale T pointed out 5 - 4 = unity connection, pretty sweet

It finished better than it started.

Jazz isn’t something I listen too but I enjoyed this album very much.

It’s cool. Take five, part of the public universal western if not world consciousness now. I liked trying to figure out what the time signature was for each of these songs. Easy listing. Not distracting and even though transcending the 4/4 time, toe tapping grooving,

Decent

This album settles nicely into the background. It’s there if you listen to it, but it’s also easy to forget it’s there. It’s music to listen to while I do something else, but not what I would listen to if I wanted to listen to music. The kind of music I would listen to to do homework. I also feel like I would get more out of it if I could hear time signatures better, as the album is famous for its use of unconventional time signatures. Overall, a pleasant album, but one I would only listen to situationally. 3 in general, 4 for that kind of music

Unremarkable

It's jazz. I like jazz as background music. I would play this again if I need to mellow out and have something on in the background.

Ist halt Jazz.

Classic jazz album

This is good jazz. If I had a house in the Hamptons I'd probably play this while serving wine to my friends attired in white sitting outside under the stars, and I might give it a 5. But since I live in Coastal Carolina, barely wear shoes, listen to jam bands while sitting in the hot summer sun drinking a beer, this gets a high 3 from me, even though it might deserve a 4 even on my scale..

Track 7 würd ich beim Pokern hören. Gibt mir ganz ganz starke Luigi Poker vibes Der Rest war okay. hört sich nach nem fancy Restaurant an.

I enjoyed it. Take Five was the obvious standout track and only one I’ve heard before.

Good music

Really nice instrumentation. Recognized a few of the songs.

Nice easy jazz

Pleasant enough Jazz album. Enjoyable to listen to while working and wanting to limit distractions but not something I would reach for regularly.

Classic.

Yeah it was good, but i don't think i'd listen to it if i wasn't in a hotel lobby. Did hear some bits which have been sampled though so that's fun

1) Blue Rondo À La Turk - 7,0 2) Strange Meadow Lark - 6,5 3) Take Five - 10,0 4) Three To Get Ready - 6,5 5) Kathy's Waltz - 6,5 6) Everybody's Jumpin' - 6,0 7) Pick Up Sticks - 6,0 TOTAL: 6,93 (69/100)

Not a huge fan but this album was pretty good. I think i need to be in a certain mood for jazz thoug

Nice and lively. The differentiation from other great jazz albums is probably much better appreciated by people smarter than me. Had to take a second listen to really understand what I was listening to. Recognised Take Five which apparently is the most popular track.

Listening to the list chronologically, I'm sure this album had some impact. I am not listening chronologically, so I do not recognise that impact. It's very much middling.

Good enough jazz. Some good easy listening.

Pretty decent straight jazz album. Great coffee shop background music.

Pretty damn cool

Fun background music.

Not the sort of thing I normally listen to, but a nice change

-pleasant

A pleasant listen. Preferred it to most jazz on the list. Still not my style though

very cool jazz, got a familiar jazz song, well rounded album as well,

Some classic jazz. Cool to see them use different time signatures and just step on every other jazz album at the time. They took a risk on that and made an absolute classic. Take five is a classic. Some nice light sounding arrangement and very nice sax sounds.

While I'm sure this is exceptional jazz, jazz isn't my favorite. However, I really enjoyed tracks 1. Blue Rondo à la Turk and 3. Take Five.

It’s another jazz album, but not a big band this time. It’s classic relaxing jazz record based on a quartet - which I like! The arrangement is top notch, with all the four instruments working perfectly together. And it may be the audio quality and mixing, but this is probably the most modern-sounding record so far, despite it being released in 1959. My only complaint is that the songs easily blend together with one another - which is really not a complaint when I’m listening to the album itself, but it does pose a problem when trying to pick highlights song-wise. Also, the songs can feel a bit too dragging, and I tend to lose focus after 3 or so minutes of listening to one song. Regardless, the opener “Blue Rondo À La Turk” was really excellent, as it succeeds in making an orchestral sound with only four instruments. “Take Five” and “Kathy’s Waltz” are also quite fun to listen to.

Nice. Recognised a few tracks but not sure where from. Much more accessible than a lot of the recent jazz, possibly too much so when it occasionally drifts in to ‘coffee shop’ jazz. I quite like it though, will probably be back. 3.5

I've definitely heard this before but can't place where. It's like lounge jazz with a few more experimental turns than expected. Quite nice, went quickly. It's not this albums fault I have jazz fatigue but unlikely to come back.

Compared to "Bitches Brew" this album was very pleasant. Perfect as background music but doubtful I'd listen to it agian.

Much more palatable than the miles Davis album we just had. Recognised "take five" but not sure where from. This type of jazz I can handle, but just to serve as background music. Highlights: Blue rondo a la Turk Take five

Not a jazz fan, but as jazz goes this is solid. So I'm grading on a curve a bit.

Very different from what I normally listen to, I enjoyed it!

I prefer jazz with a bit more groove, the sort with a mean baseline, or a swirling Hammond workout a bit of seediness or a touch of exotica. This is a bit more tame, it's not bad by any means, there are some great performances but it's just not my bag.

Great classic tracks but the whole thing gets a bit much after a while. Ok in the background though.

Semi-solid grooves. Not quite my cup of tea, but not terrible by any stretch of the imagination.

enjoyable jazz album. smooth and very listenable.

This is good for what it is, but I’m just not a big fan of jazz.

On another day I may appreciate this more, but the uppity nature of most of these tracks slighted me a little bit. After a stressful day in the hospital, it made me feel like a bit of a cunt to play an album so cheerful. That said, composition was bang on and didn't know how many classics would be on this. Objectively it's probs closer to a 4, but I can't deny my emotional reaction to it, that's not how I critic. Light 3.5

A bit too cheery and upbeat for my taste in jazz, but there's timeless classics played very well here so I can't knock it. Three and a half. Fave track: Blue Rondo à la Turk

Between this being my first rating and a genre I’m not familiar with it’s hard to rate. I’m going to give this 3 stars to start. It feels accessible despite me not being a jazz listener. It’s very smooth, it feels like I should be at an important dinner while listening to it.

Cool jazz

Not usually my thing, but a lot of it I enjoyed, huge respect to the drummer in this album who is constantly doing so much more than what was expected of them. A lot of times I felt transported to a jazz club full of smoke. 3/5 for me

Maybe I just don't vibe with jazz that much, or I wasn't paying attention.

Good album obviously take five is brilliant but overall solid nothing crazy

First track was pretty catchy, but other than that it was OK. I kind of liked the jazz but it was too samey after a while.

An interesting album, not my usual taste, but I'll definitely listen to it again.

Pretty good tbf

I'm never going to be a fan of Jazz but this was nice!

-Didn’t write a BL- AL: This album truly is a worthy contender for one of the most important albums of all time. Having never heard this before, as soon as I listened I noticed how almost all lounge room jazz seems to stem from a sound created here. The sound is very formulaic here, but then an argument can be made for is a piece of art formulaic if it’s what creates the formula. The tracks which this album laid down for chilled jazz is second to none and while this may not be the most important album of all time I’d certainly say this is the most important Jazz album of all time, maybe only seconded by Bitches Brew. The actual album itself was pretty compelling, a golden standard for what lounge jazz should be however I found the opener surprisingly weak on this album. All of the other tracks were really strong but I just couldn’t connect with that one. Overall there are definitely a few tracks I would put on again but this serves its purpose as defining and creating lounge jazz, this recording stands testament to everything the new wave of jazz would become. While it certainly wasn’t the first “lounge jazz” act, it is one of the first recordings and likely inspired a whole generation of players and quartets after it. FT: “Take Five”, “Kathy’s Waltz”, “Pick Up Sticks” 3/5

Du bon jazz, ça ne m'a pas autant accroché qu'un MIles Davis peut le faire, mais ça s'écoutait tout seul. À revisiter. 7/10

not really into jazz so this’ll be a lower rating for me 3 ⭐️

It was nice.

Started out iffy for me but I really love “Take Five.” It has the drama I was searching for through the first two songs and from there it continued to be great

I don't know how to react to that information

I have this on CD - solid jazz album

Getting a bit bored of those jazz albums.

I suppose it's nice

Not bad, but also not very inspiring

Classic but a little boring

Not all of this album really engages me. Blue Rondo A La Turk and Take 5 are classics, obviously, and the former is very interesting, but much of the album is a little lounge-y to me.

You know, if I were to have a subgenre of jazz that spoke to me, it may very well be west coast/cool jazz. The more mellow aspects of jazz that "Time Out" offers was a pleasant, peaceful, lovely listen. I appreciate how forward the piano is on this album, and its interplay with the also forward trumpet. Again, not a huge jazz fan, but I can't imagine cool jazz getting much cooler than this.

I like Jazz, some had good vibe. Best: "Take Five"

Sellaista jazzia josta pidän. Take five tullut jostain syystä kuunneltua tuhannesti. Ajattelun taustamusiikiksi hyväntuulista, rummut pitää mielen virkeänä

Not a bad album, standouts are Take Five, Three To Get Ready, and Kathy's Waltz.

It's a perfectly OK jazz album. The time signature thing is interesting, but the most memorable song is a cover. It doesn't outstay its welcome. I found the first track funny because it was like a jazz version of riverdance.

Ontspannend en swingend, met het bekende Take Five als hoogtepunt. Niet iets wat ik dagelijks op zou zetten, maar wel erg fijn.

Son great classic songs on here. Really enjoyed listening to this while I got ready this morning.

It's nice to listen to and makes good background music, but I wasn't crazy about it or anything. Not very much to say about it. My favourite song was Blue Rondo à la Turk.

Not bad

Take five is great, the rest of the album I couldn’t really get into too much. Felt repetitive, for some reason I found the cymbals annoying. Didn’t dislike it though.

I have this album. It feels like every budding jazz lover is instructed to check this record out at some point in their initial journey. Blue Rondo à la Turk is seared into my brain. The album announces itself well through this track and even though it has its peaks and valleys it doesn't fail to deliver on its promise throughout. All that said, it also feels at times like the musical conversation has moved on so much that this record now feels staid.

I do like jazz, and this is not bad, but it's slower than I'd like.

Skilled but nothing to get excited about although everyone knows Take Five and will probably have things that resonate with them from TV and film that mean more than the music itself.

Yeah, a perfectly pleasant listen, but jazz doesn't grab me in the way it does some people. I'm sure it's technically great, and it is a really nice sound, but I struggle to distinguish good jazz from bad jazz (apart from the really experimental stuff, which is either really good or horrific!). 3/5.

I think "take five" might be the quintessential jazz song. Like, if someone says "jazz", you would think of that song. 3/5

2/7, 29%

To me this sounds like classical musicians trying to play jazz. They're good at it, but it's not as exciting as some other jazz records. It sounds very composed. Favorite song: Take Five, but parts of Blue Rondo a la Turk are better.

A jazzy background listen

Average, but nice to listen to.

Not my thing but still enjoyed

Although this is not my favorite genre of music, I did enjoy this as a nice background while I was baking.

Very good, clean and crisp

It’s a classic. I liked it, but I’m not running out to buy a copy.

- Pretty cool 3.5/5

Always a fun sound.

tatlı enstrümental jazz albümü. sıkmayan da bir albümdü ve her anında eğlendim. 7/10

This was fun, a couple of tunes I knew from elsewhere and popular culture, others I didn't. Ultimately, I will never listen again - but it made a friday afternoons work a little less dull

Interesting Jazz album that I found quite different from the other ones, this ones sound and composition remembering me a lot more of classic music actually

Take 3 - an important album I guess, but a little overheard and feels a bit dry to me

Overplayed

ok... 3

interesting and important piece

Not bad for a jazz album. I usually struggle with this genre, but I enjoyed this. Nice to put on whilst doing something else. I'm tempted to offer 4 stars to this but it didn't make me...feel anything. A good album to put on for relaxation or concentrating on a task. I'd recommend this one to people who don't usually like jazz, this album might make them reconsider. Highlight - Kathy's Waltz and Blue Rondo a la turk.

I am not very familiar with much jazz, so I am looking forward to listening to this album. This was some very cool, smooth jazz. It immediately reminded me of something I would hear on the show Peanuts. I can picture Charlie Brown and Snoopy dancing to this kind of music. There are some very complex time signatures used in this album, which is phenomenal; 9/8, 6/4, and 5/4, which was unheard of for jazz. Overall, it was a good album, one which would create a perfect mood when cooking, or while sipping a warm beverage on a cold day in a coffee shop. Favourite songs: Kathy's Waltz, Blue Rondo a la Turk, Take Five, Pick Up Sticks Least favourite song: Strange Meadow Lark (it just drug on a little too long for me) 3/5

ok, I know it sounds like a hotel lounge, but you know what, I quite like it. I'm ready to drink a dirty martini and click my fingers whilst leaning against the side of the piano and really annoying the pianist by being one of 'those' drunks.

Nice relaxing jazz..

A catchy jazz album

Smoooth.

Sometimes hectic. Sometimes relaxing. I feel it. This is pretty fly, timeless, and enjoyable. 2nd half of Strange Meadow Lark was in a way familiar but I have never heard this before. NOW, Take Five was saucy! This is what I'm talkin' bout! I replayed Take Five an easy 5 times by now!

very good writing/editing music it makes mike very sleepy - he's snoring

For the Monsters, Inc of it all

p45. 1959. 3 stars Jazz, so points immediately deducted. Inoffensive background music for cocktail and hipster bars. Technically impressive. but meanders far too often and is soulless. Saved from 2 stars for Take 5, but would not listen to again. "Nice" - The Fast Show.

Not bad for some coffee shop vibes

zeker wat bangers. alleen ben ik een vocal liefhebber

It’s Jazz.

6/10 - good but im not really into jazz

It was good if you like jazz. Jazz is not my cup of tea thou

3/5 Good fun jazz album. Not my favorite tho

T R E V L I G moodmusic

jazz/10

Enjoyed this album just puts you in a nice mood. Would definitely listen to sipping some wine or playing board games

This was some very soothing music. Impossible to not feel at peace while listening

Best Song: Blue Rondo a la Turk. I especially liked the intro melody with the piano with the bass layered behind it. Worst Song: Kathy's Waltz. I just don't really like the rhythm of a waltz. Overall: Pleasant little bit of background jazz. Obviously Take Five has become a high school band staple to the point of not being altogether that interesting anymore, but the rest is nice to have on in the background.

Nice jazz that I’d throw on in the background again.

Helt bra

Some very fun tunes across a short album

As everyone already knows, this album it is based on time signatures unusual for jazz, lending a double meaning to the title. The music is cool, so you can take some time out of your day while you appreciate the weird timing of the jazz, a taste of rare meters not seen in Western music of the time. An interesting moment of experimentation.

Interesting, pretty smooth and chill. Technically pretty impressive. 3/5

Very hit or miss album. I could listen to the Take Five any time of the day, everyday. The main beat, or sequence is instantly recognizable, because it was probably covered or used a thousand times since release. Same thing applies to Blue Rondo - a great and catchy song, very easy to listen to. I had great enjoyment from listening to these two songs. On the other hand, we have the rest of the album. I'm not an expert on jazz, nor I'm not a big fan of the genre. But I feel that sometimes songs are really hard to follow, not because they are very complicated, but because 'the experiment' the band has taken didn't work, and we are left with a Dr. Frankenstein's Monster. It is an achievment, but you won't take pleasure from looking at (or listening to it, in fact) him. Not my cup of tea.

Interesting

It is a jazz album. Some of the jazz sounded somewhat familiar. I didn't feel the need to skip any songs. It was just under 40 minutes so that is a plus.

It's OK

Yes I guess this was quite fun. As far as jazz goes it didn't wind me up - so I'd say that was a win right!? Take Five is obviously a classic. 5/4 time signatures don't get enough attention main stream wise so I guess that's a good thing. Not sure what else to say really....

This was just what I needed when having a stressful day at work. Take Five is so chilled I nearly ended up on the floor.

Enjoyable Jazz, still Jazz though and missing vocals to make it really good

3 star from me for Jazz means it was great!

It's good. For jazz.

Take 3⭐️

So boppy and up-tempo it really makes you want to tap your feet and do a little ske-doodley-bop dance (don't ask what that means, I've got no idea). If one were to head to a cool jazz bar, you would totally expect something like this to be playing. Best: Take 5 Worst: Kathy's Waltz

If anyone were to ask me to name songs written in unusual time signatures, Take Five would be one of the first songs I would think of (thanks, GCSE Music). As a keen teenage trumpeter and bass guitarist, it was one of my favourite songs to learn. Of course, there are six other tracks on this album, a concoction of pleasing jazz, perfect for a fine restaurant or some such.

Take Five isn't even the best thing on this album. And it's not Brubeck's fault that he inspired the band Blue Rondo a la Turk...

Fun and easy listening… especially popular “take 5”

Very different from anything I would previously have chosen to listen to, but a genre I can appreciate much more now. No lyrics can make it tricky to engage, but also allows the music to speak for itself.

It was fine. Most of the songs didn’t really stand out too much, but there’s still some nice stuff on here. 6/10

"Time Out" is a staple of the cool jazz movement- even as a non-jazz fan, it's probably very difficult to go through life without hearing one variation or another of these tracks by Dave Brubeck and co. I'm no jazz critic so can't get too into the detail here, but I'm struck by how this album seems just as ripe for academic study as it is for sound-tracking a cooking session (seriously... it fits really well). Commendable experimentation with uncommon time signatures runs riot across the whole set. We open with an extended piece exemplifying the talents of the whole band: "Rondo" in 9/8. It was later picked up by Emerson, Lake and Palmer: I was heartened by the story of Brubeck and Emerson becoming friends. Later in the set, we have the more conventional "Kathy's Waltz" and "Three to Get Ready" and then, of course, the aptly named "Take Five". It's all proficient and good fun, but not the most thrilling or expressive jazz I've heard (possibly because it’s been generated for me straight after the wild abandon of "Bitches Brew"). After "Take Five", things slow down a bit and the music recedes into the background. I'm sure this says more about me than the album- I've never got on famously with jazz- but this one sits as "good but not great" for me. It's unlikely to bring me any further into the genre, unlike some of the others I've heard so far.

Good listen

Solid jazz, but still jazz

Easy listening. Could have been in a bookstore. Take Five is solid.

Take Five is pretty great. The rest of the songs are pleasant, but nothing really stuck out to me.

so another album to the list of 1 hit and a load of filler! LOL! i mean take 5 is probably the only jazz song that everyone would recognise. which probably means in the jazz world its the worst song going and all the cool daddios hate it because its 'square'. it could be that the rest of this album is top jazz but as i still don't have a jazz hat and haven't perfected my 'nice!' i don't know. still it was nice background music to work to.

Man, it's not often I get a full erection listening to anything other than my own baby drowning, but this is done something to me.

kinda cool

These tracks emit out a sense of calm with their simple 3-4 instrument max input, much more enjoyable than other hectic albums with no [discernible] time signature.

Pretty good stuff. Not sure I'd listen to it a lot but I did enjoy it.

Groovy but a bit much after a while

Great ambience, another one I left going with the related radio and had a great afternoon. That said it's not incredible, just nice background

Sounds pretty good for jazz. I recognized some of it. It is probably way more influential than I realize.

Cool stuff.

I think this is the first Jazz album with songs i recognized. Still not a jazz fan but this might be the best Jazz album so far.

Best jazz album I've heard from this list so far. But not saying much, still finding out I don't really like jazz.

Pretty good. Nice background music with a bit of a vibe.

I'm not really a fan of this kind of music, it's not bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it

Pure background.

"Blue Ronda" and "Take Five" are incredible tracks that grab your attention every second. Nothing innovative, everything done here has always been done by other jazz masters, but it's cool and dramatic. The other tracks range from decent ("Strange Meadow Lark" and "Kathy's Waltz) to mediocre ("Everybody Jumpin" and "Pick Up Sticks"). Not something I would choose to listen to unless background noise or a live show, but otherwise inoffensive and calming.

Smooth and classy

Drumming is great... a nice listen for sure

Crack for time signature nerds. At the end of the day, it's a jazz quartet with an alto sax instead of a horn, so that's going to limit my personal enjoyment, but it absolutely belongs here. Best track: Take Five.

The recording is essential and the playing tight, but the total is a little too cool for its own good. The *bops and the ECM set have affects that this style lacks, though Time Out is a kind of necessary link.

There are some great moments on this album, but it often sounds a bit too much like elevator jazz for me. Favorite moments - Blue Rondo a la Turk has a very promising first half - a wild 9/8 time signature and very interesting, but then the song lost me when it devolved to a simply swing jazz tune. Take Five - deservedly a classic. Clever 5/4 beat plus nice and concise. Pick up sticks - enjoyed the staccato piano solo. Honorable mention - Three to get ready - although it's kind of elevator jazz also, I like how they riff off the initial classical theme. Have to rate the whole album a 3 mainly because it's mostly background elevator music to me.

No thoughts, I like it, but wont actively listen to it.

Cool Jazz album with timeless classics.

"Blue Rondo A La Turk" and "Take Five" are absolute classics, and very special. Even as a jazz neophyte I know that. Or at least I think I know that. There are few jazz songs that I instantly recognize. These are two of them. They feel exciting and special. The rest of the album doesn't quite meet that bar though. They'd be good in a bar - a fancy one with martinis and a dress code and such. Or at a dinner party where you are trying to impress friends with more money than you. Or, keeping things fancy, at a nice restaurant. But beyond the two groundbreaking, trendsetting, genre-defining hits, "Time Out" mostly faded into the background and failed to hold my attention. Again, I am sure my lack of music knowledge (I can't explain why any of Brubeck's work is special or acclaimed) has me missing a lot here.

So it’s hard for me to rate jazz. It’s not my thing, I don’t seek it out, but as jazz goes, this was pleasant. Riley proclaimed it repetitive but I liked the variations on a theme rather than a bunch of experimental sounds that don’t tie together. Riley’s criticism was hilarious though considering she listens to the same damn song or album on repeat for weeks or months at a time.

A fantastic achievement for jazz. I gotta admire a groundbreaking album, which is clearly good, that the record company didn’t want to make and contemporary jazz critics panned. What did they know? Nothing…that bunch of traditionalists. The offbeat time signatures are innovative, playful, and stand out. +1 star for not including a bunch of improvisational bullshit too. Way to keep it real. -1 star for no vocals. It would make great background noise for a cocktail hour or fancy dinner. It’s probably over qualified for either of those scenarios, but I couldn’t see myself listening to it in many other scenarios due to the lack of vocals.

1 very good Song. Too jazy. More ambient music for Restaurant.

Mmm Jazz. It's okay, not really my thing, but we'll performed and produced.

6,5/10 Legal

I was astonished to find that Time Out came out as recently as 1959. To think that odd-metered jazz tunes didn't exist before then amazes me, since they've always been a part of my musical experience. I would have thought that Time Out was from the early to mid-50s. And I also thought that there might have been a few outliers sprinkled in jazz history before then, but apparently not. So, Time Out belongs on this list if only because it marked the very beginning of odd meters in jazz. But other than that, is Time Out noteworthy in any way? Well, it's not ugly. The arrangements are spacious and the sonorities of the instruments are contrasted adroitly. On the other hand, the improvisations are what you would expect if someone were to make a recording specifically to introduce jazz to elementary school children. This is not to say that the improvisations are bad. On the contrary, they are tasteful, but all of the risk-taking is exhausted on the high concept of odd meters. Ironically, that makes Time Out accessible to folks who don't necessarily like jazz, which I'm betting includes the makers of the infamous 1001 list. For me, it's kind of boring. I'm extremely glad that Brubeck took the leap, and I wish that more jazzers delved into odd meters, but subsequent composers and players leave Brubeck in the dust in terms of sophistication and power. It's not fair, but Time Out, which was once legitimately experimental, now ranks with the tamest of Starbucks Muzak.

Goddamnit I'm so tired of listening to Jazz on here. The number of high school jazz bands I've heard play the first track is way too high. At least 6. I had to go to a lot of competitive high school jazz band performances growing up. Not to participate, but to watch because played sax in one. This album is great. It's fine, whatever. Can I agree that it's a great album but that I also just don't give a shit? Track 2 would make for a great backing track to some type of tightly shot, more tightly focused, no speaking cooking channel on YouTube. Something where the cook hand grinds his coffee beans for his pour over coffee every morning. "I'm cultured; I'm refined; I measure all the macros of my diet; have I shown you my record collection? It's all The Beatles and jazz."

Take Five

Hated all the jazz albums so far but this one has a nice melodic focus and for some reason gave a warm Christmas glow (must be in some holiday pictures)

This is more my kinda jazz in comparison to the other entries we've had so far. I can imagine Terence Fletcher playing this down at the local jazz club.

Música instrumental, tipo guateque, sin mucha estridencia, variedad instrumental. Muy de la época. Para nostálgicos de este tipo de música

Mmmm....Nice... 6/10

Take Five is obviously a banger but the rest of the album didn't really stick with me. It's very pleasant, and the sort of thing that would sound great in the background of a party. Just cool, jazzy vibes! But I think the key issue here is that I just don't get jazz?? No memorable tunes (other than the aforementioned Take Five). I feel bad rating this so low because apparently Dave Brubeck was a very nice man.

Strange Meadow Lark bangs. Kinda lose interest in the second half of the record. Not bad just not really my thing 6 or 7

Contains some of Brubeck's strongest tracks, but is mired slightly by the homogenous piano interludes.

Ya like jazz?

Interesting, though mostly forgettable. Instrumental Jazz just kind of works like that though. It's pleasant and inoffensive to listen too, but it very rarely will leave me with a lasting imprint after the fact.

Pleasant, and inoffensive jazz.

I listen to jazz while I'm working sometimes. It's the music that I like the most that I can also ignore and focus on work (let's be honest, things like "Revlover" meant a less-than-productive 40ish minutes for me, if I listen while working). I put this on and ignored it. It was pleasant and appealing. I will say that there seems to be more spotlight sharing in this group than other jazz musicians I listen to. Might make me look like a fool but I can't tell you which instrument Dave Brubeck plays after listening to this. That's cool.

Neat stuff. Favorited and will return to for more. Great for either sitting around or working.

Something you put on to sound sophisticated at a dinner party until you get asked "isn't this the Monsters, Inc soundtrack?"

Take Five is a song that everyone has heard somewhere, probably the most recognisable smooth jazz tune. This is a relaxing album, enjoyed as background music. Not sure how much I like jazz in general but this was a nice listen.

5/4 time

// Favs: – Score: Decent 3

Time Out is not a record I find engaging enough to listen to on a consistent basis, as I need tight instrumentals, epic vocals or extreme originality to warrant further listening. I do not doubt that this is very well made for a jazz album, therefore I believe a score lower than 3/5 would not be fair.

it was alright.

Jazzy. Take 5 is a classic. Good to listen to while working.

Cool jazzy album. Take Five the standout but all tracks pretty nice and chilled

Already liked blue rondo a la Turk and Take five. Take five being a favourite of mine. The rest are ok, not as engrossing as miles Davis for example

One song sounded a lot like Jesus Christ Super Star. Not a fan of jazz typically but grew on me some throughout the listen.

Nice relaxing piano music.

Pleasant. Not blowing my mind. Will listen again.

mmm no es de mi tipo pero lo escuche mientras q dibujaba y me agrado mucho el tipo de ?ambiente? q se creo con esa musica y los dibujitos u.u

Very smooth, and generally fine - a bit wallpapery

Nice fruity plucky show tunes

as a pretty big fan of jazz from that era, i've always found this a little too polished. take 5 is iconic, but beyond that it's boring when stacked up against even just other 1959 release from Coltrane, Mingus, and Miles Davis. not enough improvisation

Decent jazz album for background music.

This is a really famous album because it used unusual time signatures (at the time, pun not intended) for jazz. I don’t bother myself with technical details such as that when it comes to listening to music (and truth be told, my ears don’t know how to even differentiate for something like that), I’m all about how music makes me FEEL, and this didn’t really make me feel any one way or the other. “Take Five” is probably the most recognizable tune on here, I’m sure it’s been featured in oodles of movies and TV shows - I recalled it from the “Rushmore” soundtrack, but your mileage may vary. I didn’t hate this, I didn’t love it, it was almost like white noise in the background for a little over thirty eight minutes, and then it was over with.

Disco de Jazz muy escuchaba. No se hace bola como otros donde no encuentras la armonía.

Track one is really cool.

Fun and jazzy

I really liked it. It was quite chill and reminded me, with my little knowledge of jazz, of Coltrane.

First jazz album.. hopefully more in the list

fine and cool

Jazzy and interesting

Not my thing

gordon_ramsay_finally_some_real_jazz.gif or at least it has good bits 💥blue rondo a la turk 💥take five

Can’t get into jazz. At least there’s some groove here and not just random squeals.

Tää oli aluksi vähän niinkun kasibittisen Nintendon pelimusaa oikeilla soittimilla soitettuna, sitten liukui liikaa ihan kikkelijatsin puolelle.

Take 5 is the best not a big jazz person

I don't like jazz, really. But it was okay.

Hard to go wrong with jazz, it's great but personally wouldn't be my first choice if I was in the mood for jazz

Am I done with the jazz albums yet? I do appreciate the different styles but I still don't like any of them.

Jazz-old I luv the vibe I wanna learn it on piano

I haven’t hit the smooth jazz stage of my life yet. A few minutes is okay, a whole album not yet.

felt like background noise, not my thing perhaps

Pristine jazz charcuterie board (looks real nice, but won't replace dinner). Cool interplay between piano and sax. Feels preconceived in a way that most jazz does not. More an exercise than an experience?

This was nice & easy to listen to while I worked. Nothing special to me though. Just feels like something I can listen to on any other soft jazz album. Favorite: Kathy's Waltz

Meh, it was nice for background music, but faded away after Take Five.

I've heard a couple of these songs before. Probably in movies or TV. Didn't really like the majority of this though. Not for me even though the musicianship is excellent.

Lo escuché con Alba mientras cocinábamos por la noche y se sintió muy guay. Me recuerda un poco a la película Soul. Es como estar en un club de jazz de antes.

Not for me

I listened to this while working in my home office. It was pleasant enough and faded into the background. Except for "Take Five", which is iconic, no tracks jumped out to me. I'd listen to this as background music any time. Beige.

This is some cocktail hour mingling music. Some conference call hold music. Department store music. Pre-dancing wedding music.
