Really great perspective on a band that I thought was limited to doo-wop songs. Had no idea they went psychedelic and funky. Definitely worth a listen.

The Temptations have an impressive number of good albums and timeless songs. This wouldn't be the album I'd expect to see on this list, but it's solid. Rating 4.4.
Motown is difficult to rate sometimes. There are a few really great songs, a few okay songs, but most Motown is just really solid. As usual, giving this 4 stars.

A very funky, enjoyable neo soul album. It sounds more 70s but it was still made in the 1960s, it must've sounded so fresh at the time. I loved it!

Pretty sure this was their first album that got away from a more doo wop sound and ventured into expression of social consciousness. Hard to keep 40 some odd albums straight but this has to be one of their best. I also have to admit that I love the Temps and ain't too proud to beg for more.

This is an incredible album from The Temptations. I was expecting more “My Girl” type music but the album was very diverse in genre. It was like the barber shop meets psychedelic jazz (??) Evette song was unique and complimented each other beautifully. The album wasn’t too long either which is a plus.

Excellent album
Pillar to post this is a whole vibe. I wanted to get up and straight up boogie. Even when the message presented wasn’t a positive one the music still flowed through me. A wonderful piece of R&B/soul music.
Quite enjoyed the Grapevine cover despite itself. Probably a 3.5 overall so I’ll round up to a 4.

Motown grows its hair, drops acid, gets heady. It’s pop music at its funkiest and funk music at its poppiest, if that makes any sense.
Fun stuff, pretty different from the other Temptations album I had, but still very solid. Will have to come back to this.

I was surprised that a 9+ min Temptation song exists! Very Groovy and easy to listen.
BL: I love the temptations, I have many singles of theirs that I love listening to, but never listened to a full album. Let’s give it a listen. AL: very good. Exactly what I’d expect from the temptations, all wrapped up in a neat package. Some lovely grooves, some good lyrics and the vocals are just buttery and as sublime as always. Solid motown classic. Cloud Nine is a great track, I Heard it Through the Grapevine, and the rest of this album really define the motown sound.
Enjoyed this. Lyrical themes are a bit repetitive but I think that's a motown issue not a Temptations issue.
It's quite a leap from My Girl to psychedelic soul. Obviously there was a middle act to help with the transition. But still. Grapevine's got a great groove going off, something that even Marvin couldn't achieve. The soul is still there; the soul is always there. Plus it's cool to hear the familiar Motown house sound bass pumping along, holding it all together. If you wants the Temps to do anything, then psychedelic soul it probably is. Country soul may have worked. But Cloud Nine is a product of its time. It still stands up well.

This was a really solid album but it definitely is not their best work in my opinion. They are a great group so it is still really good but I prefer some of their earlier albums and a few of their 70's albums over it. I think my favorite song on this album is the title track as well as "I Need Your Lovin'" and "Why Did She Have To Leave Me". The rest of the songs are all solid but this albums to me is nothing to write home about. 7.5/10
Fair, nothing special but pleasant to listen to
The Cloud Nine cover and name are perfectly accurate but also not: Buttery smooth music gains a certain amount of bumpiness in sequence. That makes for a crystallized teardrop of a sound, which succeeds largely on listenability. The covers have me thinking about the songs in new ways, even if they aren't as bombastic as some of the other tunes seem to demand.

Worth it for Cloud Nine & Run Away Child, Running Wild, the latter of which I was only familiar with the edited single version. This 10 minute version is fantastic. In between the two is not the greatest version of Grapevine - give me Marvin Gaye , Creedence, The Slits or even Gladys Knight ( the first version released but not the best) any day. But their voices are so good they almost get away with it. And it’s their voices that make Side 2 of the album worth listening to, not the songs as such. They were a great vocal group.
Norman Whitfield and the Temptations convince Berry Gordy to try something new, and kick off psychedelic soul. And set the precedent that Motown can do something other than polished 2 minute pop songs. So, this inadvertently gives us a whole genre that takes off int he 70s, plus opens the door for Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder to blow the roof off. Side 1 is terrific with the title track, a psychedelic reading of Heard It Through the Grapevine and the 9-minute freakout of Runaway Child, Running Wild. Side 2 is much more conventional, but still a great listen.
Rad, funky Motown. I like it.
Wonderful album. Side 1, the first half, is gritty and urban and not what I would expect from the Temptations, and its entirely successful. The title track is a perfect example, telling the story of impoverished urban life a young manand the escape into his own imagination. Next up an inspired version of Heard it Through the Grapevine and the epic 9 minute track; Runaway Child, Running Wild, another gritt=y tale of life on the streets. Side 1 is near pefect. Side 2 returns to to more typical Temptations fare and the songs are always strong and beautifully conceived but definitely classic Motown pop. This combination makes for a wonderful album. 4 stars

This is the second album I’ve had this week with "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" on it, something is in the water. Also, loving a Temptations album that doesn't have "My Girl" on it, my god that song is SO played out! Very enjoyable listen, loved grooving to it. Only downside is the 9 minute track, it just kept rambling on and didn’t fit in with the concision and brevity of the other tracks.
At the height of its powers, Motown makes it look easy.

Once you've heard Marvin Gaye's or even CCR's I Heard it Through the Grapevine, this version seems very tame. They've got soul, they've got passion, they're The Temptations for goodness sake.
So much richness of soul in this, which can feel like a lost chapter of the '60s. The production feels a bit rough and muddy, it's music to take seriously, even as one is enjoying it pretty deeply.

Great Motown album
So much amazing energy, but the song subjects weren't doing it for me as much. I even want to give it a 3 for that reason... but... it's such powerful music. Makes you feel alive instantly.
Another band I've listened to just incidentally but never really sat down and focused on an album from but it's really great. Breaks out of the traditional soul formula and does a lot of cool progressive stuff with it.
Ok so first thing’s first. When I saw it was The Temptations today, I somehow mixed them up with The Foundations and was wondering if Build Me Up Buttercup would be on this album (what a great song). Obviously, it isn’t. However, I still look forward to hearing The Temptations! Songs I already knew: I Heard It Through The Grapevine Favourites: Runaway Child Running Wild, Why Did She Have To Leave Me This wouldn’t usually be my kind of music, but what a fun album! The bass singer has a fantastic voice, and it was always a treat when he’d get a solo line every now and then. The music stays exciting throughout and it’s easy to find yourself bobbing you head along without even realising it. It didn’t exactly melt my face of or change my life, but not every album needs to. An easy recommendation for anybody who just wants a fun album and nothing more.
It was an interesting listen, as I had heard many of these songs covered by others first.

Oh hell yeah. The first side is a massive jump forward from the classic Motown sound into a "psychedelic soul", the source material for the funk sound of the 70s. Poignant lyrics, great instrumental compositions, and harmonies and vocals as good as ever. The second side dials it back a little with more subtle touches of the experimental first half, which IMO, weakens the record. Still a great album though.

It's rather good is the short answer. Cloud 9 (the song) feels like it's birthing 70s funk and soul, absolute tunes. The rest of the album is less bold, but still giving me ten great soul tunes. Annoying it isn't on Spotify, though.
True, some of the songs sound an awful lot alike, but when its this good, thats alright baby!

I like this one more than the last Temptations album we were sent. They were testing out the fusion of psychedelic and soul which must have been exciting for them. They made the new genre work and Cloud 9 is an excellent example of this. They also had a new singer after an acrimonious split with the last guy, so they must have been particularly motivated to make an ass kicking album. They succeeded.
Some fun soul, it's quickly becoming my highest rated genre on this

05/06/2022 This was a nice one to get on a Friday. A week full of bullshit ending with a smooth funky album like this was nice to go out on.
Flawed but brilliant. A side is more psychedelic soul than the B side and although both sides are great in their individual ways, the songs on the B side, whilst being nearer to the original Temptations' sound are not as good as those earlier songs.
Yo esperaba un disco de funk setentero estándar, bien logrado y lleno de canciones clásicas. Al menos no fueron clásicas para mi, creo que reconocí una, obviamente sin ser conocedor del tema. Sí es un disco muy bien logrado y creo que no es completamente estándar. Quitando Runaway Child, Running Wild que dura 9:36, el resto de las canciones son cortas y variadas, con muy buenos metales. 3.5 que subo a 4 porque sí me quedaron ganas de escuchar más de ellos.

The album is good, I liked it a lot. The title track is a really awesome and Runaway Child, Running Wild really surprised me for how good it was, I loved the lyrics and instrumentation of these two songs. The rest of the album is also good, I liked the fact that a good amount of the songs in this record are about losing the woman you love.
Solid album great for background music while I prepare breakfast. If you are a fan of Mowtown R&B Funk it's a great album. Also, perfect length @ 35 min total it wasn't too short or too long.

Very solid album through and through but not a ton I would personally listen to over and over on my own playlist. Potentially closer to a 3.5 but earned a 4 for me on the strength of the whole album.

I really love The Temptations. Heard it through the grape is just a solid piece man. It's always been interesting to me, I grew up near a vineyard and we'd pick grapes and blue berries from to time. And It rings so true lol. You can't see anything through it, so you just kind of have to listen. Super makes sense once you've been in the situation. But nah it's this interesting mix of Funk meets motown and It just fucks man.
This was a lot more funky than I was expecting. Still a few old school Temptations songs on it but mostly a different vibe than I'm used to with them. I hadn't heard most of these songs before but still really enjoyed the album.

Side one is kinda revelatory...what if The Temptations worked together ... the song Cloud Nine might just be the result. Next is a great take on Heard it Through The Grapevine and the 9 minute closer is another funky, introspective freak out that packs a real punch. Love side one. Side two gets back to more familiar territory, silky smooth vocals, lush production with plenty of strings...syrupy sweet. This is a great album for someone who wants a taste of the classic Temptations sound and a glimpse into their experimental side. 4.25 stars

Psychedelic soul is a super interesting genre and something I have not explored with the Temptations. There are experiments that don’t quite work, like a cover of ‘I heard it Through the Grapevine’ but there are some really great sounds on this album. ‘Runaway Child, Running Wild’ is a standout for me and a great jam. Of course this is still a Temptations record and so we still get those lush harmonies for which the group is known

Yes, I've heard of the Temptations but I couldn't list any of their records off of the top of my head. Yes, I've heard "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", but I haven't heard this version. Maybe I've never heard the Temptations' version of the song. I think all of the tracks on this album were new to me. This was a good album to listen to. "Cloud Nine" has a great intro, and was a great way to start the album. I'm sure there are tracks that deserve a second listen to get a full appreciation of the album. Love that Motown beat. Unmistakable sound. Cloud 9 - This is way funkier than I associate with the Temptations - no big band sound. Just guitars and drums. There's an almost live sensibility to it - lead vocalist comes off the mic. I am guessing this was recorded live in studio and not produced and pieced together. I Heard it Through the Grapevine. Now, I associate this with Marvin Gaye or Gladys Knight. Was this a Temptation song first? Apparently this is a cover, but it's good. Run Away Child, Running Wild - Back to that funkier, rock sound of Cloud 9. This is a surprisingly fresh and rocking album. Not the way I think of The Temptations, and I like it. "I Want My Mama" scream is jolting and terrifying. Quite a message, and then the instrumental jam that follows is impressive! Love is a Hurtin' Thing - Much more produced with that backing horn section and strings. Soulful song though. I like it. Great album! Hey Girl - Another soulful song - simple lyrically, "Hey Girl, don't go away." It's more about mood. Probably the worst song on the album. Just meh. Why Did She Have to Leave Me - A better version of Hey Girl. More story, more vocals. Side A of this album is definitely the side to listen to. Side B is more derivative, but it's a great sound! I Need Your Lovin' - More don't leave me. I was wrong, and I'll fix it stuff. I think the well is drying up. Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me - Interesting spin on the old familiar. The broken man who is being left is pleading with her to not let HIM take her from him. Crazy. Typical Temptations song. simple drum kit snare/closed cymbals with horns and a guitar. Decent rhythm, but this side of the album does get repetitive. I Gotta Find a Way to Get You Back - How many girls leave this guy and send him to a desperate plead to get her back. Got a little saxophone on this one though! I do like this song's vibe more than the others on this topic. Gonna Keep Tryin' Til I get Your Love - Bass line is super reminiscent of Sugar Pie Honey Bunch I can't Help Myself, which was a Four Tops song. Interesting.

Old school funk from the old school Temptations. Lyrics in this sometimes seem to harken back to slavery, or at least that was what I was feeling. No doubt they were politically charged people in their day.
Didn't hit me as hard as the prior offering by the Temptations, though I think the album version I pulled up may not have been the best mastering, the sound seemed a little muddy. Still great.

I like the kind of psychedelic instrumental arrangements. I think the vocals sometimes keep it from being a real favorite for me, but every other part is really good.
The dudes voice is FRIED on this record, but it makes it even more smooth somehow. Classic Motown basslines and instrumentation here. I mean, it’s the Temptations, cmon man. Favorite track: Cloud Nine Least favorite track: Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing

I feel the only weak spot here is their version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine". Rest of the album is some classic soul and funk, along with some excellent story telling. Favorite tracks: "Runaway Child, Running Wild", "Don't Let Him Take Your Loving From Me"

It's ok
I’ve always loved the Temptations as song artists. Whole albums that I’ve enjoyed like Psychedelic Shack or All Directions are great but have some moments, especially PS, which has getting high songs that don’t wear as well. So far the first three songs seem to hold together thematically, although “Grapevine doesn’t bring anything to the song that Marvin Gaye and CCR both sang better. Overall some great songs, not necessarily a great album as a whole.
This was fine. I didn't find it that interesting really, however it did sound newer than it was. I was surprised it wasn't 70s or 80s. I would give this a 2.5 if I could, but it is defo worth more than a 2, so I've given it a 3. You can definatly feel this was a shift from whitewashed "soul" in the 60s to more 70s/80s soul.
Back to back I Heard It Through the Grapevine. What a coWINKYdink! Randomness at it's finest! Today I learned that the Temptations version of ...Grapevine is not definitive version. Then what is? I'm pretty sure it's Marvin Gaye, not the California Raisins. I actually blame the California Raisins for making me think it is a Temptations song. The Raisins are clearly modeled after them. There is a playlist on Spotify with 100 versions of ...Grapevine. That's crazy. Great song, still crazy. 3

Pleasant enough but no stand out tracks.
Very good record if you are already into this style of easy listening R&B from this era. Not my bag but it's a 3.

Quite enjoyable. I probably prefer the more motown sound than the psychedelic soul, but I wouldn't turn either away. I Heard It Through the Grapevine pales in comparison to Marvin's version, and the extended interlude on Runaway Child, Running Wild is a bit to get through. But nevertheless solid album worth listening to.
I imagine that The Temptations were purely Motown based on what I’d heard so was pleasantly surprised when there was a large amount of funk thrown in. The album however was very front loaded for me and I became slightly fatigued towards the end.

The Temptations!!!!!! Easily one of my favorite soul/r&b/vocal groups of all time. That being said I am not delusional when it comes to my life long adoration of the Temps. You don't need to listen to this album in its entirety before you die, an argument could be made that you dont need to listen to any of their discography as COMPLETE album. 'Best of' compilations exist for a reason. Now, specifically this album: Its a jump to the more psychadelic R&B of the time. Cloud Nine is fantastic, the rest of the album is anywhere from good to OK though it is always nice to hear a Paul Williams lead (Hey Girl and Dont Let Him Take Your Love From Me).... I love that mans voice. Anyhoo. 3 stars.
I was expecting this album to be a bit more funky. It's just a bit lacking across the board. All the tracks are at least enjoyable but it's lacking a standout tracks or two. It did teach me that there are over 100 covers of Heard it through the grapevine, although this isn't one of the beat. A nice 3* listen.
Perhaps because I was expecting to like I ended up a touch disappointed.
Another one that is a good listen but nothing special to go any higher.
Seems more noteworthy for the influences it brought into a mainstream sound but above all is a showcase for the Funk Brothers.
I saw the Temptations name and expected more than what was presented on this album. It was okay, but the hype killed it. 2.75/5

Хоча все одно дуже стильно, оці вставки з низьким вокалом взагалі кайф. Коротше 3.5
Despite what Chris says, I don't absolutely hate The Temptations. Didn't absolutely love this album either though. Probably historically important but there's other music from this period I like better

This starts out really great! I've never heard a full album from The Temptations before, and I'm still not very familiar with Motown or soul, but a lot is happening on this album—sometimes maybe even too much. This is especially true on the long, haunting, and psychedelic 'Runaway Child, Running Wild.' The screaming child mixed in is breathtakingly uncomfortable and scary. However, with so many vocalists, I feel all the different backing vocals and sounds are a bit too much at times. On the positive side, the percussion is very nice and the funky guitars are great. Some songs have great lyrical themes (like 'Cloud Nine' and 'Runaway Child'), but others are really simple, throwaway love songs—even if the music still swings greatly. I had also never heard this very different version of 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine.' I understood that this version was recorded to quickly jump on the train of Marvin Gaye's popular version. The first half (3 songs) I would rate a 4/5, but it drops a bit in the second half, so it will stick at a 3/5.

The most mid experience ever... It's good music, but it just isn't that striking at all. Won't be listening again, but wouldn't mind hearing the music at a restaurant or elevator. It's ok! It was pretty boring though.
This psychedelic funk record starts of strong with danceable grooves and catchy baselines. The Runaway Child song is a great banger that I saved to my personal playlists. The rest of the record slows down to accommodate the love hits that end the record on a softer note. All in all an enjoyable listen. 7/10.

For the first three tracks I was really enjoying this and we were looking at a 4 or 5 star album. Unfortunately it fell away for me after that. There wasn’t anything bad but nothing I liked anywhere near as much as tracks 1-3. Top Track - Runaway Child, Running Wild

There isn't really much in the way of their iconic hits on this one, but there's a couple of funky jams in the first half that I dig. Albums by groups that are primarily known for their singles are tough to place on this list.
