Cloud Nine

Fun old Motown music. I had only heard My Girl before, so it was cool to listen to some of their other music.

What a great listen! The music and lyrics really stuck out to me. Only thing I didn’t love was the topics were mostly centered around heart break which I think I got a little tired of after a while. Otherwise would totally revisit!

It's good, but not a very unique soul record. Cloud Nine is a good track though

Cloud Nine finds The Temptations eschewing their gospel roots for a funkier psychedelic sound inspired by Sly and the Family Stone. This is sound they would adopt for almost the entirety of the upcoming decade of the 1970s, to great critical success. The only thing holding back the record is the uneven and often poor quality of the production. I'd have been less critical with my scoring if I'd listened to it on AM radio or a well worn vinyl, but listening in lossless with high quality headphones made all the technical issues even more glaring.

10 songs Heard a lot of their music as my dad used to play it semi regularly when I was younger and I've always enjoyed their work. No song on this album really stood out to me, but it was solid overall.

Funky like a monkey. Nice to see how they embraced the changing times reinventing themselves keeping the old and adding the new. Don't Let Him Take Your Love for those liking the old school sound. Dennis Edwards has a monster voice, range, rasp, incredible! Full horn section I hear you bari sax you! 3 Not a huge fan of the transition. Kudos to them for evolving, but there are better examples like a Mayfield or Hayes, but perhaps not so much a whole quartet quintet of singers doing it together.

Starts off really funky and then we go to the same cookie cutter motown sound, which they def perfected, I just was hoping for more of the experimental stuff since that’s where we started

Wasn't bad, didn't grab me this time but would listen again with an open mind.

Was loving this album until the "I want my mama" part. freakin annoying. Really started out strong with the first track, a few other groovin tunes, but lost me as the album went on.

Thought I was gonna like this more than I did. The first half didn’t really do it for me, boring rendition of Grapevine, though the 10 min track didn’t earn its length. But very much enjoyed the second half and its Motown, Northern Soul vibe.

I love the way Motown is mixed: the reverb on the percussion and strings, the warm buzzy bass, it's like there's a warm hum running through it all. It's not my favorite collection of Temptations songs. I think I like it noticeably less than All Directions so I feel I'm forced to give a 3 here, but its a strong 3. "Runaway Child" is not as good as "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone." Most of the themes are forgettable and the structures simple. James Jamerson's bass playing is my highlight (holding it down with one finger) I'm curious what makes this psychedelic soul, besides the pattern on the cover

The late-60s radicalization of the corny old Temptations is a satisfying one. I like to picture them synchronized in matching suits, swaying in an acid fog, wondering what they've signed up for. It's really only side one of this record that bears the new direction, but the nine-minute epic about a runaway is quite a move. The rest is all strings and backbeat, trading the harmonies their potential new audience's square parents loved them for.

It’s alright

A solid collection of songs, worth returning to. But on first listen there were no standout tracks, and the record as a whole is not the most memorable.

Runaway Child Running Wild tässä mielenkiintoinen tuo lauluarraus ”hoo-ho-pa-hoo-ho-pa” kahden laulajan välillä. Saman biisin vähän liian pitkässä ja junnaavassa intruosassa jännä, kun tulee kitarafillailut mollitonaliteetin päälle duurissa. Lyriikat ei parin ekan laulun jälkeen kuitenkaan sitten aivan niin hienoja – aika sokerisia ja ”baby, baby, baby, baby”. I Gotta Find A Wayssa pieni barskasoolo! Haha, yhdessä biisissä lauletaan, että älä vain mene sen toisen mukaan ja melkein seuraavassa sitten, että olet toisen, mutta en halua olla vain ystävä ja yritän niin kauan kunnes jätät sen jonka kanssa olet. Kohokohta oli Cloud Nine. Kauttaaltaan hienoja luluarreja ja hienoa laulamista, mutta silti jäi vähän pinnallisiksi lyriikoiltaan. En tykännyt niin paljon, mitä luulin tykkääväni.

Ei hyvä eikä huono, ei myöskään oikein mun tyylinen. Biisit kuulosti kaikki vähän samalta ja toistavilta. Miksaus tyypillistä 60-lukua. Isä vois tykätä tästä tho!

Psychedelic soul oli uusi tuttavuus terminä. Ei ollu niin psykedeelistä kun ois voinu musta! Mutta aivan menevä ja passeli. Ei jääny mitään ihmeemmin mieleen mutta ei vaivannu myöskään. Huomaan olevani jotenki tosi toisesta korvasta sisään ja toisesta ulos näiden kaa monesti!

Groovaa niin maan perkeleesti. Tämmönen protodiskosetti on aina tosi ihanaa kuunneltavaa, mutta levyllisen aikana käy vähän tylsäksi.

Ihan kivaa ja tykkään tällasesta musasta, mut pidemmän päälle vähän tasapaksua rallattelua. Jäi taustamusaksi reippaan alun jälkeen.

𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥 𝘕𝘪𝘯𝘦 captures The Temptations at a fascinating turning point, as they move beyond their classic soul sound and embrace psychedelic influences. The album is ambitious, adventurous, and clearly willing to take risks. While I can appreciate that ambition, the album never fully comes together for me. There are plenty of inventive arrangements and strong performances, but it often feels too scattered to leave a lasting impression. By the time it’s over, very little has stayed with me. I understand why 𝘊𝘭𝘰𝘶𝘥 𝘕𝘪𝘯𝘦 is regarded as a landmark of psychedelic soul, but I admire it more than I actually enjoy listening to it.

The kind of music that's fun for the whole family and won't upset grandma!

A very top-heavy album. Really enjoyed the first few tracks, felt a big drop-off as far as energy is concerned in the remainder of the album. Some moments here and there but I'm not big on Soul music to begin with so it's likely just not for me. Runaway Child is fantastic though the crying kid noise in the middle were not necessary. 3 stars

I'm not so big on the psychedelic soul portions of the album. The back half of solid Motown soul is what you expect from the band. Having the kid crying for his mom in the middle of "Runaway Child, Running Wild" was a decision, and made me just wanna scoop him up and hold him. The cover of "Heard It Through the Grapevine" lent a gravity that took it away from the fun Marvin Gaye tune into the department of "why you wanna do that to me?". Not a bad album, but I won't be back. My Rating: 3/5

I thought this was enjoyable but I don't feel compelled to go back to it any time soon. I don’t know what it is with “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and covers that are 6 minutes too long.

Surprisingly disappointed

Frankly, Motown alumni and their work are starting to get tiresome. Soul, soul, and more soul. Northern, Southern, Detroit, New Orleans... Basically, that's the studio's bread and butter, the problem is that it all sounds the same to me. Even the songs on different albums can be the same — the band takes a standard and reworks it in its own way, and does this several times. This album by The Temptations attempted to stand out from the crowd a bit — for example, the first side is clearly inspired by Sly & The Family Stone, and the band ventures into psychedelic funk territory (just look at the long "Run Away Child, Running Wild"). However, while they wanted to attract new fans, they were afraid to alienate the old ones, so the second side... Yeah, it's the same old three-minute soul songs, a sure bet. In short, it's a three stars for the effort, but a light one.

Pretty good. Nice short album, and I really love how balanced all of their voices are. No huge standouts from the songs specifically, was not expecting a 9 min adventure in the middle of it but that was fine.

The Temptations sing about love for 10 tracks straight but that's pretty much par for the course of the 60's. Thankfully the music is groovy and enjoyable for the most part.

This version of Heard It Through the Grapevine' was disappointing

The title track is dynamite and the rest offer diminishing returns, but I still enjoyed this. Good vibes and great vocals all round.

I could have done without the nearly 10 min Runaway Child, Running Wild especially with the creepy child voice midway through. The Heard it through the Grapevine cover was also pretty terrible. The album improved dramatically when they get back to the classic Temptations vibes

"little chiiiiild, running wiiiiild". love the interlude on this song ok the music is good, and the songs are classics, but the post-doowop a cappella(-ish, obv there are instruments here) just isn't my favorite style. i'd rather listen to the Supremes covering the Temptations. next on my queue is their collab album. the front vocals are impeccable, it's the background that i'm not a fan of. i dunno, we're sitting in a 3.5 range here. i'll decide tomorrow how to round it.

This did not do much for me. Sure it had good beats and rythems, but I didnt actively enjoy it. Wasn't bad, didnt dislike it, just didnt do a thing for me. I'm rating for enjoyment and how much I liked it, as I always do, so it just scraped a 3 I think. Ik its a good album. Just not for me

Great stuff! Soul is a genre i dont delve into much so it was a pleasant surprise. the instrumentation was top tier and their voices were (obviously) soulful.

Good upbeat soul album, I’m never gonna love this kind of thing but it’s harmless and fun in places.

Come for "Cloud Nine," stay for the half-and-half record that follows. This one is a groundbreaking piece in the Temptations' catalogue as it adds funk to the psychedelic soul sound they had been so seminal in development. Don't be fooled by the opener and 9 and 1/2 minute "Runaway Child Running Wild;" about half of this album is plain, by-the-numbers Motown, which is still a fairly high bar for quality. And really, nothing could follow up those two giant songs so may as well play to your strengths both new and old. I can see this was probably a harder choice of an album to include than most, as the Temptations were always more of a singles act, but they're just too important as a group to outright leave off a list of significant albums... This album was a classic 1969 album for me. Low tempo, chilled out and all about love. The vocal performance is awesome but I think it's just a little too slow for me. I also would've liked to hear about something other than love but that is kind of the concept of the whole album so hard to fault it for that. Fav song: Why did she have to leave me (why did she have to go) Least fav: N/A

No need for me to listen to this - Motown was the soundtrack of my childhood and then the Beatles saved us. Thanks to the gods for rock 'n roll. This pablum dance music was fun enough until we learned better.

The Temptations are iconic. Never sat down and listened to a full album before though. This one is very well done, with only a few misses. But also, none of the hits they're known for. On balance, it's a 3

Somedays you just really need The Temptations! Reading up on this album, it seems this Grammy winner pissed off a lot of their original fan base by funkin it up a little. I say good for them. One of the most annoying things, to me, in music is when "expert" listeners get angry when their artists take their art in another direction. Like, they're personally attacked or something. Switching things up to remain relevant or reach more people is a wonderful thing if done correctly (of course it can backfire). But in this case, it did not backfire, and it was very enjoyable.

Blue, country, and what wikipedia tells me is "roots rock". This feels like a slimmed-down version of the Rolling Stones "Sticky Fingers" album; a reviewer apparently once called them minimalist and I agree.

The Temptations' first album that goes beyond the group's typical Motown sound does so with mixed results. The opening track is the clear highlight, a funky-yet-depressing soul cut that makes good use of the group's vocals. The nine-minute "Run Away Child, Running Wild" is the clear attempt to try something psychedelic, with the varied production and long instrumental breaks. It ends up feeling weirdly empty though and is only sometimes interesting. The second side is fairly straightforward Motown soul that is good but not great. The group went onto move adventurous things than this, and while it doesn't really stand out from the 60s soul pack it's at least a pleasant listen.

I like ‘Cloud Nine’ better overall than the Temptations’ other album in the book, ‘All Directions’. The title track and ‘Runaway Child, Running Wild’, are probably the standout tracks here, really leaning into the psychedelic soul aesthetic. I prefer other versions of ‘I Heard It Through The Grapevine’ (Marvin’s is the definitive version), and ‘Love Is A Hurting Thing’ ( Gloria Ann Taylor’s version is a mesmerizing and emotionally devastating, sprawling, psychedelic soul epic). The rest is your above average but fairly conventional Motown fare.

Weird album it’s like the temptations trying out different genres to see what sticks to the wall. I love soul music listen really hit for me.

waffling between 2 and 3. I think thats the difference for me, I prefer bands for vocalist groups. And here the band feels like an accessory to prop up the vocal performance....for the whole album. Not my cup of tea. That said, its too competant for a 2.

Cool and funky, with those classic choppy guitar riffs and bubbling bass lines from the Funk Brothers. Smooth harmonies and lead vocals delivered with conviction. 'Runaway Child Running Wild' is epic.

A solid entry—it just gets rather monotonous for me. The best element is all the backing vocals. The writer is how they rely on the same tricks over and over again. Also: is “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” the song that appears the most throughout the entire list? I think I’ve heard it 3 times during this project.

Supremely easy to listen to but nothing really jumped out as me as incredibly memorable. Very much a background listen for me.

Side A is pretty great but side B is pretty standard. They average out in my book.

This started off very promisingly even despite my pet peeve of a cover song. Track 3 was good. However, it trailed off into derivative soul/motown. One of the better of this style I’ve had though.

I love how they can be a Motown pop group one minute, and funky, psychy, experimentalists the next - they seem to cover both ends of the spectrum on this record. I found it a bit meandering and aimless in places, but the world’s a better place for them.

I was looking forward to this for a change of tempo and sound, but found it a bit lacking. I wanted to be thrilled by that motown popness, but it seemed to lack sparkle somehow. Not helped by the slightly lacklustre version of Heard it through the grapevine (which I know was a Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong penned tiune) but I don't think this was the first version?? A fine album just not what I hoped for.

I am quite partial to a Motown album and enjoy many of them. This felt however, a bit ‘mid’, decent enough instrumentals and such but just sort of made decent background music and didn’t feel like it was anything special. ‘Cloud nine’ and ‘I gotta find a way’ were highlights but everything else just seemed a bit forgettable not bad just not special. I wasn’t keen on the grapevine cover, the original by Marvin Gaye is a phenomenal and very emotional heart felt song, which in this cover I think completely missed the meaning of the song by using a very upbeat instrumental which just seemed so wrong. Overall – Okay not bad but just very background music vibe, a low 3 star from me sort of a 2.5.

Just funky background music but not really my style and a few songs I actively wanted to skip. Like a 2.5 / 5. Round up to a 3/5.

This album is by all interpretations, a transitional album both in its date of release (at the end of the 60s the cusp of the 1970s) and in the style of songs. the first half of the album has groovy funk rhythms that would become the bedrock of the 1970s soul funk genre while the second half of the album is the classic Motown sounds that the Temptations were known for.

It has that motown feel, which is fine. None of the songs really grabbed me. I didn't know psychedelic soul was a thing or that their fanbase would be annoyed by this "pivot" (doesn't sound like much of a pivot to me).

The first 2 or 3 tracks were great then it got rolling and was good

The problem with this album is that the last two thirds of the album virtually all make the same point and do the same thing. The first third was more ambitious in topic and style and promised a lot and then it became a bit repetitive in theme. I'm mostly happy with listening them do that but I feel like the album could have offered more ambition.

Its good motown with a hint of funk coming in. I enjoyed it. Some parts got a little boring.

It's good but it didn't put me on cloud nine.

A fun mix of motown soul and 60s psych that peaks on the long instrumental jam at the end of side A, where you get the glorious Jamerson style bass and some great fuzzy guitar sounds combining for a heady bit of funk. The B side is classic but not especially inspired RnB - great vocal harmonies and more of that perfect bass but the schmaltzy strings drag it down a bit and the songs are mid.

6/10 - A fun album to have on in the house. I prefer the funk songs on the album to the more Motown/Soul songs but that’s a personal preference. Cloud Nine is a great song!

*Solid R&B album

I liked the first half of this album, which is really the first three songs, more than the back half. The front is a bit more funk and psychedelia based whereas the rest is classic 60s soul. I don’t think the classic stuff is bad, just not nearly as interesting.

This is one of those examples of a record that I know is good, and know is highly regarded, but that doesn’t move the needle much for me. I just don’t love the falsetto singing, and lead vocals go a long way towards whether I’ll enjoy a band. So it’s a good sound, but not my cup of tea. 3/5

Found it fine. The Temptations are solid R&B Motown. The latter half just kinda petered out into the generic.

Nice album but a bit middle of the road

My Temptations knowledge is very sporadic, mostly centring around their Motown output with David Ruffin. Following his departure, the group move away here from their classic Motown sound, embracing orchestral and psychedelic soul and leading to the records highlight, the 9 minute _Runaway Child, Runnin Wild_. It's a solid album, perhaps a little inconsistent in places but well worth a listen

I like this style of music although on this album I am not as keen on the sort of serious stuff, I much prefer the how do I win my baby back pop stuff…. Also disappointed that they have included the worst cover of I Heard It Through The Grape Vine that may ever have been released on record . Overall decent 3.1

Not too keen on this. Felt like it was the same track over and over again. Even dipping in song at a time didn’t feel that there was much of a difference. This one isn’t for me.

Motown baby! Holy cow, the history of this band is nuts. So many members, so many changes. Drugs and alcohol will do that. It keeps amazing me how these bands exist for so long. I feel like every album I've listened to so far could have it's own show/movie.

Two contrasting sides, with their new style on side 1 and the older style on side 2. The funkier first side is more interesting, although I am not sure we needed to hear the crying child in Runaway Child, Running Wild

Much though I understand The Temptations impact on music, overall I find the music bland. I don't generally like singers in the higher registers. So while this is deserving of the list, it's meh for me.

I prefer the older more classic line up of the Temptations- this album isn’t bad, it just doesn’t hit like the earlier stuff.

Cloud Nine - starts of the album with a simple but effective lick. Raw, powerful, soulful vocals to a driving tempo. D minor. Grapevine - same soulfulness, more of a motown feel. Even beats, good bassline, call and response vocals as classic hallmarks. C blues. Good falsetto work Runaway Child - More soul / psychadelic, especially the intro. This walks a fine line between soul and motown because you have some call-response elements, but the vibe is overall more soul-like. The crying child in the middle of the song is highly jarring, which is probably what they were going for? I'm also getting the vibe of a jam, like they keep going back to that basic lick and then other instruments are phasing in. Love is a Hurtin' Thing - Stark contrast to the last song. Good horn section and falsetto usage. C MAJOR (as opposed to C blues), sweeping strings. Departure from Funk and Motown, more of soul and honestly maybe even R&B. Lyrics are simple and straightforward -- bass and falsetto voices alternate lyrically to represent the duality of the emotions the singer is feeling. Hey Girl - More upbeat and 60's feeling. Why did She Have to Leave Me - A swinging beat, C major, Four Seasons vibe with the background falsetto vocals. Raspy lead vocals, more dependency on strings, but still has a great bassline. I Need Your Lovin' - Unremarkable. Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me - Back into funk from motown with the vocals, still has that call and response aspect though. Enjoyable possessory love song, I guess. I Gotta Find a Way (To Get You Back) - Upbeat and hopeful vibe, really fun song and motivating. Would be good in a movie. Keep on Tryin' - good ending song, but otherwise unremarkable.

It was a fine listen, but already forgot about how it sounded the next day writing this review. Not memorable for me.

So this album did kinda blend into the background for me, I can't really say I gave it full attention. In that sense, it didn't grab my attention by being amazing, but it also didn't grab my attention by being awful. It did grab my attention with the "I want my momma" crying bit in "Runaway Child, Running Wild", that was probably my least favourite bit of the whole album. The bits I actively listened to were funky, upbeat, jazzy, enjoyable. All perfectly pleasant. The vocals were good. Lyrics were generic. Instrumentation was good though could have used a bit of variety. No complaints bar the runaway child bit. Perfectly good background music. Straight 3.

First time I ever listened to this album. Cloud Nine is a great song and a I really loved Gonna Keep on Tryin' Till I Win Your Love. In between it's pretty good. An okay cover of I Heard It Through the Grapevine. Runaway Child is really funky but a bit overlong. The rest are fine. Not my favorite Temptations album but very solid.

It’s solid but perhaps controversially I think this version of ‘I heard it on the grapevine’ is one of the weaker versions of the 1000 or so versions on the generator good tho 3/5

Good. Classic. I was tempted.

This is a classic, no doubt. The Temptations are a treasure. That said, overall, there is just a bit too much cheese factor for me. A solid choice for so many reasons. It's just not entirely my bag.

Can hear the beginning of disco and funk

Baselines. Pretty good album, fun bass lines and crazy raspy vocals - could see myself playing this whilst I’m making a fire bolognese. Would like to buy on vinyl for sure.

Fantastic album, and I didn't know until last year that the Heard It Through the Grapevine was originally performed by the Temptations, not CCR. It's short and good, but not an "incredible" album for me, even as a fan of the Temptations.

You get what you think you’ll get! These guys are wonderful listening but the sound is a little repetitive in album format. 3.5

The funkier jams are great, otherwise it's what you would expect from a Temptations album. The vocal talent is great, but all the songs start to feel the same 3.5

Easy listening, nicely produced funk. Middling but good. The kind of group you could throw on and people would have a good time to.

Not really my bag but will put that to the side for now.  Strengths are the solid vocal delivery, and it avoids being too lifeless or overly soul by having a little bite to it.  Bottom line for me I don't mind the funky bass line and even the allure of a silky soul singer, but this in the end is too straight for me.  It doesn't have a decent variety of songs to my ear and just bouncing along nicely isn't enough to be a cut above the rest.  Weak 3.

A very pleasant funk and soul album by the Temptations. I can't really claim to have been moved at all by this. Just an overriding feeling of "this is quite cool" but nothing more. I highly rated earlier albums but this one felt like it wasn't doing anything that they hadn't already done.

Hørt på det minste flyet til Widerøe på vei mot Lakselv. Utrolig sterk start med tittellåta, og Runaway child, Running Wild. Så faller egentlig interessen min mer og mer for hver ‘your lovin’. Håper han vant ‘your love’ til slutt, det ble dessverre ikke ‘’my lovin’ i hvertfall.

Er vel på lista på grunn av I Heard It Through the Grapevine. Resten av plata er ganske standard, men de gjør en del sprø ting også. Ikke så verst!

The start of the Motown shift to counter cultural themes with the drug influenced title track. Soul and funk permeate throughout, the rather over long third track looks forward to ‘papa was a rollin’ stone’. The second half seems more traditional in terms of style. The sound of 1969 black music encompassed in 35 minutes.
