Did not enjoy. I'm sure Gary's work was revolutionary for the time

Some of his later material, such as "Pure," is so much better.

Like, noo you cannot just play around with the sythesizer and call it a song?! Remarkable birkaç şarkı: -M.E. -Cars Mid (4/10)

way too 80s space-y for me. I like Cars but a whole album of this is aggressive.

An extra star because of Cars. But every song is exactly the same: and that's not a good thing.

Something cool sampled this

just not my thing

Needs more cowbell

Some good tracks, endearing use of technology but too stale and similar for it's playlength

His big hits are hits for a reason - the other stuff is dark and odd

Nah. 3 songs in knew it wasn’t my thing.

interesting to hear the influences on some future music, but this doesn't do much. It's a 2 because it isn't actively dreadful.

Not for me.

Here at my desk, I heard the same song 10 times, I guess that it’s good if you don’t really care, thanks no.

Cool album but I just couldn’t enjoy it. I find the voice annoying

2/17, 12%

Well I guess that is where that Basement Jaxx sample comes from.

I know the song Cars, I've tolerated the song Cars, but it never made me want to listen to more songs like Cars. Thoughts on the album cover: is this guy thinking about how he's gunna shove that triangle up his own ass?

It really does all kind of bleed together after a while. An album better appreciated for its influence than it is to listen to.

I felt like every song was building towards Cars. Then Cars happened and the rest of the album was ok.

Not feeling it. Cars was catchy.

Int min grej

This is one of those albums that you rush out to buy only to play it once and say, why.

Cold and charmless, sterile rather than sophistcated, records like this gave New Wave a bad name.

I enjoyed this album way more than I expected. The electronic/spacey sound was pleasant to listen to. The vocals/style aren't my favorite. Even with the classic song "Cars" on here, I don't think I can give this any more than a 2.

Its interesting how my tastes have changed over the years. When this came out in the late 70s my friends and I thought this was the shit. The robotic singing, heavy synth melodies and beats were so cool sounding and a nice reprieve from the punk scene that so popular during this time. I guess if you weren't a punk in high school, you were a New Waver. Freak or Geek. Many folks talk about how influential Numan was to electronic music in the 80s, but I see him as a poor copy of the real innovators like Kraftwerk. He relies far too much on the heavy handed use of the polymoog on this album and most of the songs sound the same because of it. I guess he intentionally wanted to sound robotic but other bands were still able to imbue a sense of humanity into their electronic music and as a result their music doesn't sound so dated as this.

I am just not a fan of 95% of the Synth-Pop/New Wave era of music. This is not an exception. It is just mildly ok Synth music. I have heard much worse Synth music, but also have heard much better. "Cars" is a good classic track though. That however is all I really enjoyed about this album.

A big shiny robot comes and decides what will be played on the radio for all humankind. Some of the music just gets stuck in your head in an endless loop. The words don’t matter. Other songs have some meaning that you have no connection to at all. It’s there and whining its drill into the background of your brain. There is a flow but not emotions that register in your inferior flesh. I want to give this album a higher rating but I’m neither a robot or in a future ruled by them.

The only song I came close to liking was Cars. The rest were instantly forgettable. A very iffy 2.

-In the bass synth in "Airplane" I thought I was hearing "We'd like to take you home with us" repeated like in "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" -Not much stood out on this one. I think I might start downgrading these to 2's

Confirms that I don't like New Wave Never bad, but never all that great

If you like the song Cars, then you're in luck with this album, since the whole thing sounds like variations of that song. Unfortunately for me, I never cared for Cars.

Whetehr it's corporate cynicism leavened by silly funk or silly funk leavened by corporate cynicism, the funk's the problem. Too slight, too weedy.

I liked M.E., was surprised to hear something I recognised from a basement jaxx sample. It's probably very influential in synth-pop, but I found most of the rest of the album a bit samey

Too repetitive, and not enough lyrics. Maybe that's just how synth-pop was before the 80s, but I don't like it.

Used to love "Cars", but after wading through this album and getting to the point of where you understand this came from, it makes sense, but then it loses a lot of its magic because you can see behind the curtains.

Supposed to be from the future but just sounds weird and out of place 🥱

Eno lite

i know what new wave sounds like now

Feels kind of dated in this day and age. Not bad, but most of the songs are a bit underwhelming.

culturally and aesthetically significant but this is a little grating to listen to. Nice to finally hear the album behind "Cars" though.

Cool sounds, not really engaged with the album though.

Best Song: Cars. Don't even know if it's better than any of the others, or if it just benefits from the fact that I recognize it. Worst Song: Observer. Exactly that chunky, slow, 80s synth style that I dislike. Overall: Not my style. Sounds like big hair and neon clothes. It just feels like so much emphasis was placed on using weird and space-y sounds, rather than having them sound good and fit together in any cohesive way.

I wasn't impressed by the synth really. Just okay for me.

Cars is good (I've been listening to it recently cos it was on the soundtrack of the last game I was playing), but the rest kinda blend together.

Very good song writing, but the synths just make it boring and too repetitive for my liking.

not good

The live percussion backing electronic and synth sounds make for a couple of decent tracks. However most of the more electronic tracks sound like the daft kids pissing about with the preset sounds on the keyboards in a music lesson. A little too repetitive at times and forgettable.

Honestly... just felt so dated. Even as someone who enjoys late 70s and 80s music just... very very dated. Only like 2 songs on the album that I thought were really enoyable.

Nicht mein Ding, aber nicht schlecht gemacht.

Eh. 5/10

Naja. 2,4 kann ich dafür schon geben!

Not a huge fan of it

I can only imagine how futuristic this album must have sounded in 1979! Personally, I just don't dig it. The songs drag on way too long and the vocals are too winey. But I can appreciate how revolutionary it is. 2/5 - Didn't resonate with me

fine i guess, but not something i wanted to listen to at 10 am. i made it halfway through

What if the song cars but an entire album in length? Numan really just picks one kind of syncopated synth beat and really runs it into the ground.

I looked at this album the same way Gary Numan looked at the pyramid on the album artwork. Intrigued, suspicious, unsettled, aroused. "Cars" is the only track I think most anyone has ever listened to, and it's a fun ride for sure. Overall though, the album is pretty flat. Sure, it was early synth pop and maybe paved the way for some more exciting stuff. But on its own, meh.

It was alright…

Some songs were kind of cool, but overall not for me. And "Cars," despite being the most popular hit, is one of my least favorites.

Everything sounded very similar - can understand the appeal/influence this had, but not for me

Eh not a huge fan

2,5 unterhaltend

Iconic prototype of early to mid 80s new wave sound. Listenable, just not my style. Rating reflects personal opinion, not overall quality. (I guess that’s true all the time, but especially here.)

Weird and boring

Largely seen in the U.S. as a one-hit wonder for "Cars", Numan was actually at the leading edge of the synth-pop/new wave movement worldwide. This synth/Moog heavy collection is not an easy listen today, as the sounds are definitely of their time and outside of the 80s mainstream. Likewise, the subject matter isn't particularly relatable, dealing with machines, robots and other things sci-fi. Perhaps that's why "Cars" hit the biggest - it reflects on something most of us can relate to. I dig the bass lines and drum tracks in many places (esp. the instrumental opener), can take or leave his voice (which works best on "Cars"), and admire the strings mixed in on certain tracks ("Complex", ) What can't be ignored, though, is the albums influence on other bands. New wave took off big and much of the sound can be traced to Numan, to the point that some of those sounds & rhythms are common in general pop and even hip-hop these days. And if you want a direct connection, look to NIN's cover of "Metal" (which clearly rocks a lot more than the version here). Still, I wouldn't listen to this album in it's entirety again. But "Cars" has a solid place in my 80s playlist, for nostalgia's sake, if nothing else.

This album may technically be 70s but the synth heavy sound came to define the 80s pop music. Just not my thing.

If John Thompson or Hal Leonard wrote a book on playing keyboard. I don't think this album will stand the test of time. One hit wonder and most of the songs are simple and contrived. It wasn't unenjoyable to listen to, but it also didn't inspire me to hear it again.

The only song that really differentiates itself to me is the hit “Cars”. Has the hooks and pop sensibilities that the rest of the album is missing Everything else just kind of blends in to one another.

didn't listen all the way, ok ig

Could barely make it beyond the first track. Terrible.

Not for me

ok I guess

I appreciate it for what it is, but it feels very basic by today's standards.

Undoubtedly influential but seems to recycle the same ideas over and over.

I enjoyed the simple, synth-pop instrumentation and the satisfying new-wave songwriting and could easily see myself giving the album 3-4 stars if it had another singer. Unfortunately, I just don't like Gary Numan's voice apparently.

2.5 background gear for me on this one

It was alright. A couple of pretty good tracks

What a strange duck this is. I feel as if this is an album more important for what it represents than what it sounds like. Automation, alienation, robotics - we're on the cusp of the first era of popular computing here and thus Numan's otherworldly marriage of man and machine must've seemed a quiet thrill. However, in 2021, its repetitive grooves and relatively small sound palette just don't cut it no mo'. I realise that repetition in and of itself can be a canny tool in the hands of an artist, but it doesn't mean I have to enjoy the results. I've listened to this twice, to see if I missed anything the first time around. I don't think so. I've got a friend who looks like Gary Numan though.

Boring. Not a fan. Cars, metal and maybe one or two others bring it up to a 2.

Interesting. Not good, but interesting.

Every song felt the same. Techno drum machine is repetitive. Probably influenced some 80s artists

Cars. Very 80's synthy rock pop? yea let's go with that.

Never really been a fan. But I like that Joe the Waiter song on the Tubeway Army record.

Synth pop, lidt spacey, rytmisk

Not particularly an album that I would gravitate to however it was an interesting listen. For me, I didn't particularly pick up on too many stand-outs although "Cars" is an excellent song which seems to be Numan's most well-known.

tragically, I prefer the Basement Jaxx version

Synth-pop, 2,5/5

Gary Numan’s expanded edition of The Pleasure Principle completely misses the mark, landing as a weak, deeply confusing, and borderline childlike effort that is impossible to recommend. While the iconic synth-pop staple "Cars" and the slightly better end of "Conversation" manage to be passable, the rest of the standard tracklist is a frustrating slog through jarring sci-fi oddities like "Airplane" and "Metal," leaving the listener entirely lost on "Complex" and "Films." The album's saving grace is ironically tucked away in the bonus material: the outtake "Random" provides a genuinely refreshing, different, and highly enjoyable vibe. Unfortunately, it isn't enough to rescue the surrounding project, which plummets right back into boring lulls on "ME" and "Engineers," before wrapping up with the genuinely creepy atmosphere of "Asylum." Save for that one standout rarity, this is an alienating and highly flawed experience you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy.

in the early seventies at school when played around with some electronic elements - we created similar kind of 'music'

I love the 80s. This album represents the worst of it. So many better choices out there.

Blah. Dude looks like he is from American Pyscho.

most boring shit i‘ve ever heard

Nothing pleasurable about this kraftwerk parody. A tough listen

Not bad. In line with his other music.

don’t like it at allll it’s feels too disturbing and weird i just couldn’t finish the album

I am utterly shocked by the amount of positive reviews on this thing. I get it: I can see the influences on new wave, 80s pop, and beyond. But damn it, synth-pop is just so not interesting to me. Goofy fella, this Gary Numan. Decent but far from my fave. Fave tracks: - Metal - Complex - Tracks - Cars (why is this song so popular??) - Me, I Disconnect from You - Remember I Was Vapour Edit: Why the hell do I keep giving new-wave the benefit of the doubt? One star. Sorry, Gare-Bear.

Just got bored, didn't I? So it's not really 1-star-bad, in fact it isn't bad, but it's so samey that I couldn't be bothered ERGO 1 star it is.

unicamente melodia. nada de letra

nothing about this was pleasurable

zu anstrengend

hate it

Some New Wave just isn't good. This is some of it.

This was the inspiration for a genre... A genre that I hate almost in it's entirety, so it's no surprise that this was lost on me, no nuance, no subtlety. Repetitive and draining; I couldn't wait for it for end.

I did not enjoy this. I like the song Cars. That’s about it. Too much synthesizer. Originally I thought this inspired Devo, but devo was first. Way too much synthesizer.

Wannabe Kraftwerk without the Kraft or the insight, dull as a thud.

Very repetitive. Electronica not my thing.

a really entertaining parody of new wave music-- the tinny vocals, the cliché synths, the complete de-emphasis of bass sounds, the stupid lyrics, gary really nailed it all in a way that's truly indicting of the genre. it's so close to the real thing that for a minute there i was worried it was genuine, but of course that would be ridiculous

Every song on here feels like it's a minute too long, which is rough when most of them are 3-4 minutes long.

Couldn't get through it.

Synthesizers! Synthesizers everywhere. Did this guy start the eighties synth craze? Random was appropriately named! I enjoyed the cover of On Broadway, but overall, not my style. I can see how this album influenced many artists and am glad I listened to it.

Excited for this to be over

Joa, geht so.

As someone who hates electronica I have particular beef with this one for helping to kick off the genre

Alles nervt an diesem Album, Stimme, Synthies, langweiliges songwriting

If the opening track foreshadows this album, it's gonna be repetitive and annoying. ------------- Yeah, listless, directionless. I could not disagree more with the book's review. The overuse of that one synth tone across the album actually cheapens the otherwise standout "Cars". A tragedy. A slog. A 1/5.

Well, this record was not for me. I appreciate what it did for synth pop, but there’s only really one or two redeeming songs on here. “Cars” at least has a decent melody.

uugh hated it. Couldn't get past track 2

The repetitiveness of this album was what killed it for me, there’s some variety but not much. The tones and sounds used throughout didn’t grasp me and thought the vocals weren’t great either. Couldn’t get into it and unfortunately wasn’t for me despite listening through the entire thing.

This was terrible 😭😭

Not good.

Nope. Not for me. 1

I don’t like this stuff

Did not like it... Should be there a thumb down, I do not want to give a single star to this album - it doesn´t worth it

I thought this album was so incredibly annoying (the vocals, the repetitive synth paterns, and the percussion). Although a moderate album length, this dragged on for what felt like 3 hours. Cars is a classic song, but even that doesn't do it for me. This list has felt more like the 1001 new wave and UK punk albums list of all time instead of the 1001 albums you NEED to listen to.

No! Same beat over and over again for the whole album!

No. No no no

HAted this

Fand ich richtig kacke.

Aside from the track Cars, this is very forgettable and unbelievably samey 80s pop synth. I didn't like it in the 80s, and 40 odd years later I still don't like, with Gary's vocals being a Marmite love it or hate it thing.

i like synths but not much else the last song was kinda scary and cool but i wouldnt listen to it again

Unbearable when sober

the string section of Conversations was the only good part in the entire album. 4:19 to 4:37, 18 seconds of beauty was all I got out of this I had to pause the music and walk away during several times Genuinely a terrible experience

Meh, I wasn't too impressed. I had heard one of these songs on the radio, Cars, but every song sounded a little bit like it. Kind of repetitive sounds and vocals. I was familiar with some of his more recent stuff. In fact I have one of his songs "liked" It's a TOTALLY different style than this album was. Much more sinister and dark. He was actually here a couple weeks ago with Ministry!!! I really should have gone. Oh well.

Not into synthesizer rock or pop or whatever you call this. Thought many of the songs blended together. Cars so overplayed when it came out, I still hate the song to this day. Actually I would like to take the time to call out the Detroit rock/classic rocks stations of the early to mid-80's. Thanks for killing every big hit at the time by playing ad nauseam. Not for me. Did not enjoy. Won't relisten 1

Favorites: -Oceans -Asylum

Phew, it may be that the album was at the forefront at the time of appearance. Listening to it today, hearing 15 times the same song (well almost) has been a challenge. Not my kind of music, can do without that.

Didn’t listen

1.5/10

Yli minuutin introja, kertosäkeettömiä kappaleita, turhia instrumentaaleja, junnausta... Syntetisaattori ei ole tekosyy säveltämisen minimoimiselle.

His hit "Cars" is on the album and always a banger, but everything else all blended together and just wasn't really feeling it.

How the hell could Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark be the supporting act for this maniac. If this is what he thought the future would sound like, I'm really glad he was wrong. 1

Hier vond ik weinig plezier in

Hier kon ik veel te weinig mee.

No me gusta.

Another that contains one song that we've all heard a 1001 times. Rest of the album is variations on that theme, no need to hear this before I die.

Not my vibe… but interesting.

Was fine while I was working but not sure I could distinguish one song from another.

Despite having Cars in my head for the last 30 years, I couldn’t get into this record.

Not my jive..

Horrendo, no he podido con el.

No ps no.

maloooooooooooooo OHHH

He descubierto que me caga Gary Numan

gives me a heebies jeebies vibe, esp Asylum
