Reviews (page 4 of 16)
This album must have been mind blowing to audiences at the time. I knew the heavy hitters but the whole album is enjoyable front to back. I really appreciate how clear all of the sound comes through despite being a metal album. Ozzy's vocals are fantastic.
I loved the heavy metal sound and I most of all appreciated what I perceive to be an anti-war message.
Okay this album is actually fire. I think this is the most this genre, or maybe specifically this type of metal, has ever actually stuck and resonated with me? Something about it is just EXCELLENT sounding. Even despite the long song lengths, I never got the usual feeling of all this guitar sounding the same for 40 minutes. Great stuff.
No notes! Just pure riff-filled heavy goodness the whole way through. Fantastic atmosphere, fantastic songwriting, pure banger energy.
Black Sabbath at their absolute peak. Best listened to at max volume while speeding down the highway. The RIFFS. War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man are all iconic. But the rest of the album is awesome too. This is certainly one of the best albums on this list.
God, what an album. Obviously the megahits here are incredible, but the deep cuts are what really surprised me -- the album does not drop in quality for a single second, and every track is strong in its own way. My personal standout is Planet Caravan, a meditative bass and bongo groove and perfectly placed breather in-between the face-melting Paranoid and Iron Man. I THINK I still prefer the rawer, darker atmosphere of their debut album -- but who are we kidding, this is a 5 star all the way. Standouts: War Pigs / Luke's Wall • Paranoid • Planet Caravan • Iron Man • Hand of Doom • Rat Salad • Jack the Stripper / Fairies Wear Boots
This album has Iron Man, Paranoid, and War Pigs and that's only on the first side. RIP Ozzy
Yeah
No words, I obviously knew this before and love black sabbath. I feel like this is an album everyone can and did enjoy, no matter what genres they usually listen to. It’s just iconic and changed this genre. Perfection.
Amazing from start to end, not a weak track. Every band member adds so much, Tony Iommi has an incredible talent for writing great riffs and licks, nearly every series of notes played on the guitar is genius, Bill Ward’s drumming lends so much energy and power to the music, Geezer Butler’s bass adds a lot of depth and heaviness, and Ozzy Osbourne’s amazing vocals are so powerful and really sell the messages the songs are sending. Incredible songwriting and the long songs are very much worthy of their length. 5/5
Classic!
Best and most influential metal album ever
I think when I first discovered free will and started listening to Rock music on my own, this is the first album I remember playing on Spotify. No debate on this one
Legend
The blueprint for ALL Metal that came after it. 'nuff said!
This album is the epitome of why lists like this exist. No matter how many times I have listened to it, it remains amazing. Even with Paranoid and Iron Man getting extremely overplayed on classic rock radio, it could not affect how kick-ass those songs are.
The first Black Sabbath album I ever listened to over 20 years ago. Still one of my favourite albums with so many good songs!
Hell yeah let’s GO
foda
I ilike so much of this album, is the kind of rock that I used listen. I knew the band, but only the famous songs so this album was a great choice, because it had the famous one and other songs that I didn't know.
Great!
Grew up on this. Classic.
Well played, pushing Sabbath the day after Ozzy died. Recency bias in play, but this is a terrific album . . . would love to know the thought behind Electric Caravan, a jazzy five minute interlude between three of the most famous metal songs (War Pigs/Paranoid/Iron Man)
Banging tunes, classic rifs.
10/10
This album hit like a punch and a prophecy. The guitar riffs are crisp, massive, and unforgettable. Ozzy’s voice is haunting and unique. It still feels super relevant. War Pigs, Iron Man, Electric Funeral.
RIP Ozzy Osbourne🦇 Your contributions to music will never be forgotten. You were a great person and a joy to everyone who knew you. Now, with that out of the way, onto the actual review. This album is one of the greatest metal albums of all time. It’s also one of those rare instances where there isn’t a single bad song on the whole album. The band is firing on all cylinders this album, with Geezer Butler and Bill Ward creating an incredible rhythm section, especially on songs like War Pigs and Iron Man. Tony Iommi’s legendary riffs and solos are essential to this album. Tony is one of the only guitarists who can stand beside Jimmy Page in how many iconic riffs he’s created. Ozzy’s vocals are just the icing on the cake to this iconic record. His performance on the title track is one of the greatest in rock history. The album also has many great deep cuts, such as one of my favorite songs on the album, Planet Caravan, and Hand of Doom is another great song. Overall, this album is just legendary in every way, shape, and form. Thank you Ozzy, for leaving us such an incredible album, and thank you to all of Black Sabbath for making it possible. Rock On!
All time classic, RIP Ozzy. Will be listening to this today but no additional analysis is required since it is and always has been an easy 5/5. War Pigs and Hand of Doom are maybe the most epic songs ever recorded.
Not my favorite genre, but this album is fantastic!
Their first album not withstanding, this was their REAL debut as far as I’m concerned. Instead of the one-day live-in-the-studio documentation of a typical Sabbath club set (complete with wanky solo-instrument solos), we get eight focused tracks that truly demonstrate what the band was capable of.
71/1001. I guess this not a coincidence that the album is in my plate the day after Ozzy left us, or is it? A secret war pigs algorithm which puts forward recently deceased artists albums? What are the odds, same as the betting ratio between Iron man vs. Jack the Stripper? Is this a message from an electric funeral in a planet caravan? Hand of doom preparing some rat salad? I think I am paranoid.
Got this on the day after it was announced Ozzy died. When I was young, I got the feeling that Black Sabbath was verboten in a 'how could you listen to that darkness'? kind of way. Honestly, I thought that perhaps Black Sabbath was sick and cruel (and the bat thing didn't really help). When I got older and listened (and was more media literate), I realized War Pigs was just a hardcore peace song. And I think that the people that didn't want us to listen were just telling on themselves. Anyway, this rocks. It's classic for a reason.
what a question, every song is a banger and so iconic
Passande, bra tajming. Självklart inget okänt album. En riktig klassiker. Vila i frid Ozzy 22/7-25💔
A classic ❤️
Listens: 5 Standout Tracks: War Pigs / Luke's Wall Okay, so this is the second time it's happened now: An artist dies (The Beach Boy's Brian Wilson last time) and I get his album the next day. So, yesterday, Ozzy Osbourne sadly kicked the bucket and now I get a Black Sabbath album? Not complaining, but majorly :sus: Maybe I'm just being paranoid. I'm not being paranoid. There is apparently a way for the maintainer of this platform to slip albums into the queue, or at least artists/genres. On the one hand, listening to an Ozzy album immediately after he passed is a nice tribute to him and the band, on the other hand, the knowledge that my queue can be influenced or modified introduces an element of distrust in the platform. Is my album ordering really random? Is my queue influenced by upcoming artists releasing music? It's not really random if someone has the ability to tweak it. ---- Anyways, this album is epic. No bad songs. Not a single one. On the first side, I really enjoy how Planet Caravan audibly punctuates War Pigs/Paranoid and Iron Man. It's a nice chill, seedy beat. Congas and hazy, atmosphereic-like style. Like you're in a dingy smoke filled lounge just chilling. War Pigs, Paranoid and Iron Man are all fucking epic high energy rock/metal songs totally deserving of all the popularity they receive and their place in the cultural zeitgeist. Side B is equally awesome, especially Electric Funeral. 5
Classic heavy metal. This should be introduced to every adolescent child as they become aware of their own taste in music and the greater world around them. RIP Ozzy.
5.0 - Awesome
it’s the blueprint. Clocking in at just over 40 minutes, it’s lean, menacing, and absolutely packed with genre-defining riffs that still slap harder than most modern rock. From the galloping doom of “War Pigs” to the manic paranoia of the title track, every song is a shot of pure, unfiltered heaviness delivered with a sneer. Tony Iommi’s guitar tone alone could level buildings, while Ozzy Osbourne sounds like a haunted prophet broadcasting through a broken radio tower. What makes Paranoid legendary isn’t just its influence — it’s how tight it is. There’s no dead weight here. “Iron Man” stomps like a vengeful robot god, “Electric Funeral” is a swamp of apocalyptic psychedelia, and “Hand of Doom” is as unsettling as its name. Even the deeper cuts (“Rat Salad,” “Fairies Wear Boots”) bring something wild and weird to the table. It’s angry, raw, political, and totally unafraid to sound ugly which makes it all the more beautiful. Sabbath didn’t just invent heavy metal with Paranoid they perfected it.
Well, this is absolutely the "One Album a Day" version of a cheap pop and a way to goose the numbers for this album, but it absolutely goes hard as fuck and would fully deserve the 5 stars on any other day as well. RIP Ozzy
Classic album. I can jam every track. Best way to spend 42 minutes. 1001 album worthy; yes 103/191
It's Black Sabbath performing in just 40 minutes an entire genre forming truth and passion.
One of the seminal albums of hard rock and heavy metal.
Rock God
Wow is this what you call fate? This album was recommended the same day that Ozzy Osbourne passed, so that definitely had an impact on my listening experience. That being said what can I say, it's Black Sabbath at it's blackest and most sabbath-est. I was gonna give this 5 before, and if I could give it a 6, I would. 5/5
8,50
Music tastes and opinions are subjective. Paranoid being a 5 star album is not.
See you in hell.
# Album Name: Paranoid # Artist: Black Sabbath # Rating: 5/5 # Comments: Im not just saying it because ozzy carked it today, but this is a fantastic album. Black sabbath have been such an over whelming discovery for me as part of this journey. Banger after banger. I love sabbath now. Absolutely great band. Every album so far has been great. The guitars, the lead, the drums. All immense. This band is tight AF. RIP Ozzy # Top Tunes: Every track is quality. # Would I listen to it again? Yes
Probably my most listened album in high school. Incredibly influential band and incredibly good music. One underappreciated aspect of this album is the variety in here. For a few blokes from Birmingham making a lot of noise, there’s quite a varied track list. Paranoid sounds clearly different from Fairies Wear Boots, sounds different from Planet Caravan and Electric Funeral. Rip Ozzy you legend.
RIP Ozzy 😞
"Clap your fucking hands!!" - Ozzy Osbourne
Whoa! A coincidence that this is the album of the day the day after Ozzy dies?! The Prince of Darkness left his mark all over rock music. We’ll miss him. This is Black Sabbath at its finest.
Rip ozzy 🦇
🤘🏾🥲❤️🔥
This is an epic album, both musically and in content. Music is at its best when it takes you on a journey, and this album takes you on a legendary adventure. Favorite track: "Iron Man"
RIP OZZY ❤
Ozzy - RIP
Ozzy one of the GOATs. RIP. Every song is an absolute banger
own
Banger. One of the best.
Once again baffled by my younger self for not having listened to more Sabbath.
Solid.
I think War Pigs and Paranoid might be the best one two punch openings to an album ever. I can't even imagine throwing this on in the 70s when it came out and having those tracks just melt my face off. I'd never listened to the album straight through, but I was impressed by the other tracks, Electric Funeral and Hand of Doom are great! I do think the back half of the album does loose some steam but not in a major way. Such an iconic album with absolute classics on it. RIP Ozzy, one of the greats. Standouts: War Pigs, Paranoid, Iron Man, Electric Funeral, Hand of Doom Rating: 4.7/5
Pretty damn fantastic. Seven out of eight tracks qualify as actual classics, and the one extra instrumental is still an enjoyable listen. Hard to imagine this band as the cause of satanic panic. I just hear four brilliantly grooving musicians. 10/10
I think the best Sabbath album, and it couldn’t come at a more fitting time. RIP
As a metalhead, the members of Black Sabbath are my dads. Great and legendary album. RIP Ozzy
4.5 Birth of heavy metal came with their self titled album, but this album truly cemented the genre. It's crazy to think that this was recorded over just half a week, with songs written in a couple of hours. The first 4 tracks are unbelievable. Electric Wizard is the only downside of the album imo, it feels like a discarded self titled album filler track. Drum solo is kinda pointless but inoffensive, whereas #6 & #8 are just 'very good'. Probably a 4* music wise, but I'm bumping it up due to a) importance, and b) in memory of Ozzy who passed the same day this album appeared (surely that must be by design!)
Arguably the best Black Sabbath album but certainly the most influential. "Paranoid" is maybe the most important piece of heavy metal ever made. It's far from the first one but Black Sabbath managed to mold the genre into something unique, separated from its blues roots, and characterized by themes of darkness and the occult which would cause such panic in parents. Reports of Satan worship are severely exaggerated however. A keen listener will see that Sabbath don't celebrate darkness as much as reflect back the darkness they see in the world (and yes of course that means wearing all black and calling yourself the Prince of Darkness, maybe a step further than Johnny Cash would have gone). The lyrics are heavily political, calling out the bank bosses in bed with politicians beating the drums of war (the War Pigs mentioned in the opening track) and the herion addicted veterans who came back to nothing. There's also a heavy dose of Sci Fi mixed in, contributing more to three general theme of apocalypse. When it's not the War Pigs, it's the Iron Man. Either way, the world is destroyed. For my money, "Vol 4" is still their peak, but I can't deny just how brilliant and catchy some of these songs are, particularly in the first half, rounded out by the stunningly improvised title track and the unexpected calm and space age "Planet Caravan". It's fitting and certainly no accident that I got this one today, following the passing of Ozzy Osborne so soon after the final Black Sabbath concert in Birmingham. R.I.P. the Prince of Darkness. I'm sorry that I didn't learn to appreciate your music sooner.
Metal is not really my genre overall but I love classic early 1970s metal. This album is one of the most influential albums ever made, the first half are one incredible bangers after bangers and the whole album is compact and feels so short because it's just great music. The darkness, the rawness and energy are just fantastic. I've had other Black Sabbath albums on this challenge before but this is the best by far. RIP Ozzy (who died yesterday).
Black Sabbath c’est tellement contemplatif, c’est avant que le métal devienne les olympiques de la guitare. Même quand les percussions se débrident, on reste dans une sorte de poisse lente. Ozzy est juste assez inquiétant. J’adore.
I appreciate that the generator serves up albums based on the goings on in the real world. Yesterday Ozzy passed away and I decided to listen to my favourite Sabbath album and today I happened to get served up the same album so I listened again. What a fantastic gift this record is, a strong follow-up to their fantastic debut. Ozzy and Black Sabbath would forever change the course of music with their influence. I’ve thought a lot about it and I would personally argue that the first 5 Sabbath albums are the most impressive 5 album stretch of any band or artist in the history of recorded music. I know folks will say Beatles, possibly Zeppelin or Pink Floyd, Bowie and they may have a strong case but for me Sabbath’s 5 album run is the most impressive, especially to start a career. There are no skips on this album, opening with the iconic War Pigs and the awesome back and forth with Ozzy’s wailing vocals and the bands response, followed by Paranoid, followed by Planet Caravan which has always been one of my favourites of theirs. I’ve always appreciated their ability to cool it down a bit and still be absolutely fantastic at the change of pace, this song always makes me picture the desert and if you’re ever driving down a long desert road with little traffic, toss this song on, it’s perfect. Iron Man, awesome, every song is awesome. July 22, 2025 we lost an icon, a legend. We didn’t lose the masterpieces he was a part of, we need to be thankful for the unreal art he left behind and the influence he had on countless others who made amazing contributions to the music world. Thank you Ozzy! RIP. 5 stars
Hello everyone. Rip Ozzy of course. Dude made some killer music. Even from the get go it rules. All sorts of all timers here and even the b side type cuts are also very very good. What I love most about this record is how balanced it is. Everyone gets ample time to shine. Ozzy of course gets to belt it out. The guitars have plenty of moments. And my personal favorite is the bunch of times where the guitar fades out and its just the bass rumbling along. And even a drum solo toward the end. Its just so balanced and I love it. You have heard a bunch of these songs for the last 60 years and they stand the test of time for sure. Just listen to it and savor every second. Its a classic and a pioneer. Do yourself a favor and hit it
I’m starting to question whether this site is actually random because Ozzy Osbourne passed away the day before I got this album.
With the passing of Ozzy Osbourne yesterday, this was especially poignant. Probably one of the most influential and important albums in the history of Western Music.
RIP ozzy osbourne, black sabbath are great 5/5
Generated due to Ozzy's passing, which is a cool feature. My second Black Sabbath album overall. It's a high 4 / light 5 for me. I liked this a lot more than their debut and knew most of these songs well already. I always crank the volume for War Pigs especially. My favorite of the songs I didn't know is Hand of Doom. I love the soft drumming and how the whole song ramps up and backs back down multiple times. Great album overall.
Classic and iconic
the start of heavy metal. RIP ozzy
Iconic. Front to back has hits that help define early heavy metal
Best metal album ever. Long live Ozzy!!
Seminal heavier album. I say that as Ozzy never liked the term Heavy Metal. Simply sublime from start to finish.
Reminded me of the uniqueness of Ozzy, a great pioneer with an incredible voice and sense of humor.
Classic.
Along with their self-titled debut released the same year this album defined the genre that would be called heavy metal. This album scared the crap out of me as a kid and continues to thrill me all these decades later.
Perfect album, masterpiece. Every song is a total blast, and there is a 60 second period of time in Warpigs which has got to be tied for the best minute of rock ever recorded. 6:36-7:36. RIP Ozzy
One of favorite throwbacks. RIP to a real one 💔
The Prince of Darkness lives forever
Мне нужно что-то говорить?
very instrumental
The first four Sabbath albums are perfection.
Damn good album. Songs are nicely connected, insturments clear as day and riffs bang.
When listening to an album, I always like to imagine what it would be like hearing it for the first time at the time of its release. With this album more than most, I genuinely think I would have been blown away. Heck, im still blown away in 2025. Imagine living a relatively metal free existence then hearing War Pigs followed by Paranoid followed by Planet Caravan followed by Iron Man! You will struggle to find a run of tracks like that on any album. Second half of the album holds up well of course. Some standout sporadic drumming. RIP Ozzy 9/10 Favourite track - Has to be War Pigs although Planet Caravan is right up there
is there rlly anything i need to say?
This album is so dope. Only knew the two no songs. Blaring through my earphones I was loving all 40 mins of it. Not heavy by today’s standards but just dripping in everything great about 70s hard rock. King guitar solos, thumping drums. So good. So surprised I liked as much as I did. RIP Oz
I think this is a STRONG 9, the strongest of possible 9s, and back by the occasional duller moment on the second half, like on some of the lengthier jams on Hand of Doom. Considering its impact though it feels wrong to rate it less than a 5. This is one of the best rock albums ever, probably the best Sabbath album, and truly one of the most stunning, fully formed projects to ever come out of an early career of an artist. The fact that this came out in 1970 blows me away. I know that songs like Helter Skelter existed, and Led Zepplin had two or three albums out by now, but to release this and the self-titled Sabbath album and fully invent a new genre off the bat is legendary stuff, only really matched by albums like Ramones. This album is heavy, heavier still than a lot of other metal, and I appreciate it so much more than a lot of other metal projects because the songwriting is so stellar. Tony Iommi is one of the best riff composers ever, and Geezer Butler's lyrics are underrated, and appreciably political and angry here, something they would lose on later projects. War Pigs is, for me, the best metal song ever. And, maybe most importantly, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward are one of the best rock rhythm sections ever. They are the heart of this album, and at the core of what make Black Sabbath so good. All timer, no skips, RIP Ozzy
Hit upon hit upon hit. Rest easy our sweet prince of darkness. Holte ender in the sky 🖤🖤🖤
It is not only a legendary album but also a really interesting and pleasant to listen to. I'm not a real fan of black Sabbath but I absolutely love the music they've done Rest in Peace, Ozzy Osbourne
Rip ozzy
ah masterpiece... i love this album. planet caravan is maybe one of the most beautiful songs i know. this album is just 10/10. rip ozzy osbourne
It's Sabbath. Listen every time.
25/1001 :: Black Sabbath - Paranoid Heard before? ✅ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 9 Fav Tracks: Ferries Wear Boots, Planet Caravan, War Pigs I said earlier this is my 5th favorite Sabbath album and here I am giving it a 9. All the hits on this one. Overplayed and still just undeniably incredible. It’s pretty much flawless. War Pigs my favorite of the hits but it’s cuts like Fairies Wear Boots, Hand of Doom and Planet Caravan that catapult this album into masterpiece territory. I listened to this on vinyl last night. I’ve now owned 4 copies of this. Once on tape, on CD and twice on vinyl. Scored a shitty $10 copy until recently my bro-in-law gave me a nice 108g reissue. Over the past 24+ hours we’ve been talking (and seeing) about how much what Ozzy has meant to us and the world and it’s paramount. But this album might even transcend that. It’s such an important piece of music history. Inspired countless bands and heavy metal sounds. Damn Ozzy left us. What a legend. Love you Oz. Thank you.
I've never been a big fan of Black Sabbath, but this album is fire.
Top 5 of all time album. RIP Ozzy. You were weird, but you were also an important part of making this masterpiece.
1970 I was born this year... All the bangers represented. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ (twice today) Revisit ✅️ RIP Ozzy ★★★★★
What a staple of rock music. An absolutely incredible album that hasn’t lost the littlest bit in terms quality.
Best metal album of all time RIP OZZY
dep ozzy
Some other reviewer on here gave this album two stars and complained that Sabbath doesn’t rock “around anything” ie a clock, a robin, etc etc and I can’t stop thinking about what a brain dead take that is. FIVE STARS
RIP Ozzy. The only heavy metal album I own, and all I’ve ever deemed necessary.
perfect album. black sabbath is one of the greatest bands of all time, and ALWAYS will be. put any of the first 6 sabbath records here and i will be giving it the 5 stars it deserves. ozzy forever
#39 Paranoid ~ Black Sabbath Let it be known today Ozzy Osbourne passed and now I receive Paranoid by Black Sabbath as my generated album. There are many things you can point to as to why this album just sounds so good. Is it Ozzy's distinct vocals, his campy but fantastical lyricism? Or is it Iommi's guitarwork, not over-saturated in solos as Jimmy Page, but built upon very heavy, low-pitched and catchy riffs? Or is it Butler's bass and Ward's drumming that propel every single song like a warhorse, a form of exercise to keep the blood pumping through each listen? Or is it the underappreciated exploration of many different styles in the 'Sabbath' sound: psychedelia, blues, a bit of prog and even a bit of jazz; the combination of such sounds becoming the basis of the heavy metal genre that will emerge in the later decades? The real hooker to Paranoid is how simple everything sounds. It's an album that's easy to get on first listen, and because of this you get to appreciate how tight Black Sabbath is as a band, and how intricate each song is built to produce its iconic sound. There are no over-elaborations, no pretensions, it simply fills out an agenda of rock and delivers to a high quality that will keep you moving without resorting to an overuse of tricks and solos to jangle keys in front of the listener. You get the whole deal of Black Sabbath, and they do a pretty great job at selling the project. Frankly, this album is one of those albums where you don't need to be a wizard at your instrument to produce a 'good-sounding album'. Page's, Hendrix's and Blackmore's technique is certainly a bit more impressive than Iommi's, and you may prefer the acrobatics of Plant's vocals to Ozzy's. But Paranoid is an album of unusual vision, sold on its shocking imagination and its desire to hook you in with atmosphere over display. And in this regard, it passes with flying colours.
all time classic, stays forever
Un classique. War Pigs, Iron Man, Paranoid. Excellent.
Rest in peace Ozzy. Thank you for the music.
All good, if ever there was a case for not judging an album by it's cover then this is it. At least five of the tracks on this album are all time classics by my estimation and it set the standard for other metal bands to try and match for years to come.
I AM IRON MAN
Paranoid and Vol. 4. RIP Ozzy.
It’s good all the way through, a foundation for rock and metal to build on for all time
Poor ozzy. Wasn’t a massive fan of BS but liked and appreciated him.
I'd known a handful of songs from Paranoid before, of course, but I'd never listened to it straight through - and what a mistake that was. The opening trio alone - War Pigs into Paranoid into Planet Caravan - is sick. A hard-hitting anti-war protest slams into a song about losing your mind, then drifts into mellow cosmic bliss. Even if the connection exists only in my head, I love the emotional whiplash - it shows the album's incredible range. And don't sleep on Planet Caravan - it is essential here. Then Iron Man kicks off the "tech horror" suite - all wicked riffs and apocalyptic imagery. Electric Funeral might be my favorite track, with its killer guitar run and nuclear dread hammering home War Pigs' message. Meanwhile, Hand of Doom and Fairies Wear Boots dissect other society's sicknesses. Paranoid might be the first perfect album I've encountered. It's dynamic yet concise, packed with bangers (zero filler), and balances raw energy with deep social commentary. Every melody sticks, every message lands. Truly music for both the mind and the heart.
On the day of his passing, how cool! Anyway - 4 absolute classics to kick off. I dont know if I can describe this better than anyone else has. 5 stars. Gems: War Pigs, Paranoid, Planet Caravan and Iron Man
Classic
What can be said about this album that already hasn't been said... Though it's not my personal favourite album by Sabbath, it is still a masterpiece and a 5/5. From start to finish, song by song, it is an incredible genre defining experience. I love this album and this band with all my heart.
אין מה להגיד, אחד האלבומים הכי טובים בכל הזמנים. שיר מועדף - Iron man מקום שני - Rat salad RIP Ozzy
Excellent album! Ozzy Osbourne (RIP) Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. Legendary lineup for a great band that opened the door for many metal fans. 5/5
Aboslutely classic. Magnificent album. Nothing more to say.
Amazing album
Fitting album for the first full day without Ozzy. Great album!
What a coincidence - is this really a random list? I only ask because Ozzy died yesterday and here is a, maybe even the Black Sabbath album popping up for me. Fifty five years ago - hard to believe, seems like such a peachy-keen, gee whiz time, though I suppose war was coming into everyone's home again and things were getting quite a bit darker. Amazing riffs, amazing vocals, masters of the reality of heavy metal music, most certainly. 5 stars for my preference, 5 stars for the impact on what was to follow, 5 stars for what this was at the time.
An absolutely incredible album that helped pave the way for heavy metal. It definitely still holds up today, still just an absolute joy to listen to front to back. A little haunting that I got this album the day after the Prince of Darkness passed 🙏 Standout Songs: War Pigs Paranoid Iron Man Electric Funeral Hand of Doom Fairies Wear Boots
One of the best metal/hard rock albums ever. RIP Ozzy Ozbourne
Oddly, despite being an absolutely massive band, I feel like Black Sabbath are underrated. At least by my generation, who know Ozzy primarily as the funny granddad figure from reality TV. But listening to their two 1970 albums, and thinking about their history as a band, they're incredibly impressive. For my money they were as creative, revolutionary and influential as The Beatles, but their material has held up much better and they were much more consistent. There are no duds on this album. War Pigs is maybe the best metal song and the best anti-war song of all time. Iron Man and Paranoid go hard. The dark blues stuff like Electric Funeral sounds great. And the fact they were about 20 when they wrote and recorded this stuff, coming from the opposite of privileged backgrounds, is even more impressive.
A super important album to heavy rock. Without it, there's no AC/DC, no Metallica, no Korn (okay maybe I'd be okay with that), and no Iron Maiden. A lot of classic songs on this one too.
Iron man🔥🔥🔥🔥
rip ozzy, man of amazing
Great album. Everyone's got to love ironman.
I got emotional listening to this album since we lost Ozzy.
Listening to this a day after Ozzy’s passing hits a little different. This was my first time listening to this album all the way through and it did not disappoint. Every song on this album is great and this is just a solid heavy metal album all the way around. Without Black Sabbath and Ozzy you wouldn’t have many of the metal and rock bands that we have had and still have today. They were definitely trailblazers in the heavy metal/rock genre. I will definitely be listening to this album again in the future. Fly high Ozzy our Prince of Darkness. <3
RIP Ozzy
One of the GOATs, hands down. RIP Ozzy and thanks for the music!
Goodbye, Ozzy. Thank you for everything
Walpurgisnacht
First impression pre listen: It's a sad day. The Prince of Darkness has left this world. His mortal form may have expired, but Ozzy can never truly die. Rock on and rest in peace to one of the greatest to ever do it. Individual track notes: War Pigs/Luke's Wall One of the best album openers of all time. Beyond iconic. Sadly still relevant to this day. Impossible not to nod along to the bassline of this song. Perfect drumming too. Fantastic. 5/5 Paranoid Come on, what am I even supposed to say about this song. It's literally perfect in every aspect. It's Paranoid ffs. Fantastic. 5/5 Planet Caravan A masterclass in atmosphere and selling a fantasy. Ominous, spacey and vast. Psychedelic and thought-provoking. The extended instrumental feels like an entire journey. Fantastic. 5/5 Iron Man One of the most recognizable and iconic openings of all time. The slow buildup, the distorted vocals and the guitar riff are all unmistakeable. Tells a bit of a depressing story. Timeless in every sense. Beautiful solo. Underrated bass part. Who can forget the outro. Fantastic. 5/5 Electric Funeral Sludgy and dense. The harrowing and apocalyptic lyrics are so vivid in their imagery, it's almost as if you can picture them in front of you. Amazing switchup. Love how the energy changes with the severity of the lyrics. Fantastic. 5/5 Hand of Doom Intense and hard hitting. Fantastic buildup. Great groove. Love the solo. Again fantastic imagery in the lyrics. Really knows how to paint a picture with words. Fantastic 5/5 Rat Salad Weird and dynamic instrumental track with some fantastic drumming and a fun heavy sound that never gets old. Great. 4.5/5 Jack the Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots Amazing bassline. A deep and layered heavy sound, goes very hard. Sick guitar. A great summary of the album and an explosive and memorable end to the album. Fantastic. 5/5 Final review: I know a lot of people probably got this or another Sabbath album today following Ozzy Osbourne's death. This is an album I was always gonna give a 5 to, but hearing it today was special and it actually made me emotional. I find it really difficult to review this album objectively today, so the least I can say is that this thing fucking rocks. It's impossible to count how many people who were inspired by this album, spawning entirely new genres of music. There's nothing about this album that isn't iconic from start until finish. One of the greatest of all time. 5/5
5. Recommended the morning after Ozzy died..
Although I slightly prefer the riffs on their debut, the songs on this album are even more memorable, and the noticeably better writing is probably why. I mainly remember Sabbath's self-titled for its riffs, but Paranoid also has a ton of iconic lyrics that are sang in a very pleasant rhythmic way. The tone of the album is, of course, very dark, but it is also extremely catchy. It’s crazy that Sabbath not only have been able to replicate the success of their first album—and arguably even improve on it—but also did it the same year. Crazy good album made by some crazy talented musicians. It is very simple, so I wouldn’t exactly call it the undeniable peak of rock, but Black Sabbath absolutely perfected the hard rock formula to a level no other band, in my opinion, has been able to since. 9/10
getting this album on the day Ozzy left this mortal realm was really something. it felt like communion. this album is really, truly perfect. timeless. i’m 29 and i love this like i was alive for it
RIP Ozzy. Maybe the greatest Side A in music history. 3 10/10 classics. The guitar solo on Paranoid is one of my favourites of all time. i'm giving it a 5, maybe just out of sentimentality.
You know, everybody should listen to Paranoid before they die.
THEYRE BRITUSH??? some crimes can be forgiven heart emoji
Ozzy's demise led to me getting two Black Sabbath albums a mere two days apart. As soon as I heard the news, I knew I'd be getting Paranoid. Fan-fucking-tastic album - not just for honoring Ozzy's legacy, but in general. If I made my own list of 1001 albums to listen to before you die, Paranoid would be on the first page of the list as I was coming up with ideas. Absolutely outstanding. A legend. 🤘😭🤘
I KNOW IT WOULD COME TO ME! so ozzy's dead. and we should listen to some black sabbath. what else? cut off the head of a bat-shaped cake to honour him? but anyway back to the album itself. i values personal dispair more than society doom and im pretty selfish and just want the few person that i love to live happily and don't care about the majority of people (except the minority groups me and my cared ones are a part of. Im sorry for lacking kindness but im just too tired about things they have already bought me trauma. sorry). so i avoid things with a clear political message because the truth is forever to brutal for me to see. But War Pigs is just so good. Just like Paranoid. Paranoid is so good that its literally my brain structure half of the time. Just as Iron Man. tbh i think there's only one weak track on the album ans its Planet Caravan. What was noteworthy is that all these song has a real dystopian imagery which fits with Tony Iommi's riff and the whole atmosphere beautifully. i mean why would people hate this album? jsut i mean its really a straight up classic. 5/5
One of the easiest fives I’ll give out. If this isn’t a five, what the hell is?
This is a fantastic tight album with some insane bangers on it. I think it might be their best. Even though it's so lean, there are a couple songs that let off the gas a touch more than I'd like, but the whole flow is great. I think it's really approaching perfection. I do like heavier chunkier stuff, but this really was the bridge being laid to get there.
In 250 odd albums I think this is something like my 7th 5 stars but this one tops the list. My usual listening is modern Swedish pop and Eurodance but this is the best album ever made to my ears. Or the best I've heard at least
Easy 5/5, what a foundational classic. RIP Ozzy.
One of my favourite albums, so no notes necessary - Although it is poignant that the project presented me with this album on the day after Ozzy Osbourne passed away.
A masterclass of heavy metal music. Need I say more? Favorite Track: "War Pigs".
rip
RIP Ozzy
++: War Pigs, Paranoid, Planet Caravan, Iron Man, Electric Funeral, Hand of Doom, Rat Salad, Fairies Wear Boots 9,9/10
Ozzy died yesterday - it hit me harder than I would have thought. RIP - Prince of Darkness. This is a perfect album
5/5
Today we celebrate the life of legendary rockstar and the "Prince of Darkness" Ozzy Osbourne, after the news of his unfortunate passing yesterday. Don't question the 1001 albums generator. "Paranoid" seems to be considered the group's biggest album and I certainly agree after my most recent listen. I mean, the guitar riffs from Tony Iommi are among the most iconic in all of rock and are backed wonderfully by the rhythmic bass and drums from Butler and Ward, respectfully. Enough is said about Ozzy too, whose snarly vocals complete the picture. No, listening to this does not make you a satanist. A lot of these tracks are pretty damn real honestly (Hand of Doom notably, among others). Maybe this gets a bump from me after the recent news, but I can't deny that this is Black Sabbath's greatest work. I know this wasn't their first album, but heavy metal was beginning to be forged right here. Long live the Prince of Darkness.
RIP Ozzy!!! You and the boys really made a masterpiece with this one that has and will continue to stand the test of time. Pure metal, pure awesomeness all wrapped into a classic record. Having two smash hits back to back is crazy work!
i got this the day after ozzy passed away, i’m not sure if that’s a full coincidence or if they designed it like that. this album is absolutely essential for metal and getting into the genre and for extremely good reason, every song just hits hard, it may be mainstream and recognisable but the quality of songs are just outstanding. the intro War Pigs sets such a good scene for the rest of the album then it just goes into the song Paranoid which is a punchy banger that anyone can like. the drums in Rat Salad were amazing as well, very impressive. my favourite song might be Hand of Doom, i think it’s extremely underrated and i love the sections in it. overall amazing album that everyone should listen to at least once in their life.
Reviewing the day after Oz passed. Nothing to say. One of the greatest albums of all time.
It’s 1970 and you hear this album with War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man. Holy riffs.
Fantastic 5/5
GOATed for sure.
Please give it a listen if you haven't. Stop living under a rock.
RIP Ozzy
Album 845 of 1089 Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970) Rating : 5 / 5 I don’t think it’s a coincidence this one came up today—just one day after the passing of Ozzy Osbourne. I don’t mind. Paranoid is a legendary album, and it earns every bit of that reputation. I’m not the biggest metal fan out there, but I do like good music, and this easily qualifies. Strong debut? That’s an understatement. This thing defined a sound. The band was firing on all cylinders—Tony Iommi’s riffs, Geezer Butler’s bass, Bill Ward’s pounding drums, and of course, Ozzy’s unmistakable vocals. Tracks like “War Pigs” still hit hard, both musically and lyrically, and “Iron Man” might be one of the most instantly recognizable riffs in rock history. Even the deeper cuts like “Planet Caravan” offer a weird, dreamy detour that shows the band had more range than they often get credit for. It passes all the tests. Rest easy, Ozzy—you made your mark.
I'm not sure if this is purely fate or an intentional manipulation of the algorithm, but I'm receiving this pull the day after Ozzy's passing. RIP to one of the greatest to ever do it.
All time classic album and one of the most influential bands ever. Over half the songs are legendary. RIP Ozzy.
Era and genre defining album. There is no filler here. Wall to wall big hits. A fitting tribute to Ozzy (RIP).
WTF Ozzy died yesterday and I got this album today. RIP to a legend. It was great to do a deep listen to this so soon after his passing. This album kicks all the ass and I have a hard time believing it could be topped, but there are still a few albums in their discog for me to hear! “War Pigs” is a rock song I will never tire of hearing. Ditto for the other hits “Paranoid” and “Iron Man.” The other tracks on this album bring the doom, the psychedelia, even a little folk and jazz, and it’s an incredibly good and rockin’ time. Ozzy’s lyrics are sometimes laughably on the nose, but they’re sincere and they fit the force of the band. Great album, must-listen #181.
Can't believe I got this recommendation right after Ozzy passed away. Timing couldn't be better. R.I.P to the prince of Darkness </3
Rock Album with a drum solo _ \^^/
4.5* for how much I like it; the additional 0.5* for being an inspiration to Electric Wizard and many other great bands.
Welcome to the 70s, what a departure from their 60s counterparts. There are some mega classics here that are still near perfect today. War Pigs, Paranoid, and Iron Man are all unbelievably good. I'm going to end up adding Hand of Doom to my list, though, as it was new to me and was almost as good as those other 3. Ozzy has a perfect rock voice, the riffs are heavy, solos are great, and the drums and bass are also awesome throughout (almost wish I could hear the bass popping off a little more actually).
Insane how good this album was? Went in expecting to like a good chunk, came out feeling like I experienced something.
A masterpiece from start to finish. Each song has a minimum of three killer riffs, the vocals are sensational, the solos are exactly what the songs need, and the rhythm section is both driving and groovy. I was fortunate enough to see Sabbath play with the original lineup in 2005, so listening to this again in the wake of the terribly sad passing of Ozzy is pretty touching. But man, what a legacy.
Another masterpiece day, which means I don't need to tell you how good this album is, because you already know. So I'll tell another story! I started playing guitar in 9th grade. A few acquaintances from school knew I had recently taken up guitar, and they were in a band. Important distinction; I had been in "band" (shoutout to my sax homies) but not "a band". I didn't think I was good enough to be in a band yet, as I'd only been playing for a few months. Nevertheless, the three fellows (who smoked and listened to metal) asked me if I could play bass in their band for a talent show performance. I said, "I don't play bass, and I don't have one, but that sounds really fun!" Or something along those lines. So instead of going to the next kid, the guys put their collective money together to BUY me my first bass guitar, a 5-string Squier. To this day, that memory hold a very special place in my heart. I was accepted welcomingly into the homes of these neerdowells as one of their own. I practiced for that talent show every day for over a month, and went to some of my very first band rehearsals. I was molding into my personality, even if I didn't know it yet. The day of the talent show came, and we were pumped. We had the entire school's attention in the gymnasium; no one knew what we were gonna do except us. I was easily the most nervous I'd ever been; but not for the obvious reason of stage fright. Surprisingly, I wasn't afraid of the audience at all. I had done live performances plenty of times at that point...I was afraid that I'd do injustice to the great Geezer Butler, because my very first live performance in a rock and roll band, would be War Pigs. I don't remember how objectively good we were; but it doesn't matter. What matters is the pure rush I felt. For 8 minutes, I ruled the world. To this day, I've had few natural highs since. That time cemented Black Sabbath as the first band I ever truly loved. And for that, this album is an easy 5 stars. I'm writing this 2 days after Ozzy's passing, and I know the world will miss him greatly, but I know he was aware of what his music meant to people, and I only hope he got to feel what I felt that day in the gym every time he took command of the stage.
The punchy bounce of Ward’s and Butler’s rhythm section, the sonic sludge of Iommi’s genre-defining guitar, and the dark alchemy of Ozzy’s immortal aura forge the molten core of heavy metal itself in rock’s most unholy sacred text.
Great album with many hits. Very influential to this day to most musicians in the genre. Very dark, and listening to it is a masterclass in metal. If Alice In Chains and Metallica love this band, they are worthy of my attention and respect.
Love love love black sabbath. rip ozzy!
Surprisingly good. Did not know all of these songs were Black Sabbath
RIP
Légendaire, RIP Ozzy
Iconic album with primal vocals and a strong guitar riffs duelling the drums throughout. Super enjoyable morning listen as I meandered through the city to my corporate job. Where people may think I’m insane but not from frowning but head rocking. This album delivers in so many ways. Some incredible songs on it Electric funeral and fairies wearing boots are new favourites - very enjoyable Paranoid Iron man and War pigs classics and great tunes. I would never have thought planet caravan was a black sabbath song. More likely to find on an Eagles album. Enjoyed the change of tempo and pace Over all really enjoyed listening. Tribute to Ozzy. Will listen again
Rip ozzy 🙏
Day 13 I had only listened to this album once before. This is my second listen, and it's a classic for a reason. Perfect album from start to finish! Rest in peace Ozzy
Neppe tilfeldig at denne dukket opp nå. Sinnsykt fet skive.
Absolute classic
flawless in every way. rest in peace, Ozzy. 10
First half is absolutely flawless, and the 2nd half is also very great. Would recommend highly.
6 stars!
Needless to say I’m a Sabbath (and Ozzy) devotee. I’d pick any of the 3 following albums over this one. But it’s still a banger. RIP
Never listened to Black Sabbath before and I’ll be honest I was fully expecting to hear Ozzy just screaming and shouting down a microphone. But I was very pleasantly surprised. I’ve actually listened to this album twice (which given I’m so far behind on my album a day is quite the compliment) I couldn’t find anything I didn’t enjoy about it. Bang on a 5 - and that isn’t just because he’s dead
An absolute classic and never get bored of hearing it. 4.5 but rounding up in honour of the great man RIP
Rip ozzy 💔
Rip ozzy
A few classic bangers and the whole album was very listenable
No voy a decir nada y solo poner las 5 estrellas
Aguante Black Sabbath, bokita y mi vieja loco. Ozzy si not dead
Discazo papa
Debería volver a escucharlo completo como demanda esto. Lo voy a hacer más adelante. Por tener fairies wear boots se lleva 5 estrellas directamente
Ozzy has just died and much to my surprise, it's made me cry a little. I've realised that Black Sabbath and this record have been with me throughout my life and I never got tired of it. Every track here is nothing short of spectacular and one could argue that it truly set the template for heavy metal alongside the brilliant debut album. There is something electric in the combination of Iommi's riffs, Ozzy's menacing vocals and Butler's and Ward's nearly jazzy rhythm section. A record that everyone should own.
Iconic
Legendary metal album war pigs slaps so hard
Saw this one coming 🙏
Every member of the band killing it for their part, consistent themes and sound, no bad songs and a few all-timers. An easy five irrespective of Ozzy’s death or its outsized influence.
Every song saved. This dude was belting out lyrics that had no right being as amazing as they were. RIP to the Godfather of Metal.
RIP 5/5
Setting aside the impact of Ozzy's death, it was such a treat to listen to Paranoid again. In my opinion, it doesn't really matter if you like heavy metal or not. This album is still going to work for you. The guitar, bass, and drums are each so cleanly composed across all of the songs. Ozzy doesn't do a ton of singing on this album, but when he does, it feels just right on top of the music's tapestry. And there's a ton of variety across the song styles. My favorite is Planet Caravan, a gem of a song with lots of blues and psychedelic roots on display. I love this record. Thank you, generator gods.
I’d only heard the hits and never the album all the way through. It has more personality than I expected! Coming out in 1970 you can tell how influential it was. I was surprised by the jazzy atmosphere in Planet Caravan. For a band that has a strong reputation for devil worship, I thought this was mainstream (in a good way) with a little bit of soul 😇
Un album à envoyer vers d'autres galaxies pour faire découvrir notre rock aux E.T.
Absolutely nothing to say about this album except for it’s awesome. 5/5
RIP Ozzy. Icon and visionary
Brilliant
Ahead of their time! OG’s of heavy metal
Easy 5 stars! This album kicks ass!
Riff monster - “ Laughing , Satan spreads his wings..” Rest easy Ozzy
Amazing!!!
There's just not really any misses on here at all. Everything flows together well and it forms a very complete package. Nothing to really dislike
It's hard to give an album they goes fro War Pigs to Paranoid to Planet Caravan (if I smoked weed this and Tool's cover of No Quarter would be on repeat forever) to Iron Man any less then 5 stars, even if the second half isn't as good.
Early Sabbath are amazing. So many great songs, and great riffs here. Ozzy's voice is so strong when he wails it out. Excellent all round.
I've listened to this album 1000s of times and hope I live long enough to listen to it 1000s more. RIP Ozzy. 5/5 #132
Timely
Generals gathered in their massesssss, just like generals in their massesss
it's nice to get it generated today I mean even if it weren't I was gonna listen to the same thing anyways and spend the day mourning. Absolute colossal of an album, one that will never get lost in the passage of time. I always said the day Ozzy dies, I die and now I actually feel like a part of me died with him. The word "legend" gets thrown around quite a lot and easily but if there ever was one, it's him. Inventing heavy metal, being an inspiration to literally every other artist I listen to... he achieved things that one can only dream of. Once in a lifetime man, once in a lifetime band. You will be dearly missed Ozzy. Rest easy, prince of darkness.
Rip ozzy
This album still rocks so hard. Absolutely massive riffs, solid rock hard drumming with impeccable fills, funky bass lines, and the Prince of Darkness himself on vocals. I can't even begin to count how many times I played this album in high school. And I'm starting to introduce some of this to my son. We wouldn't have modern metal and hard rock without this album or without Ozzy for that matter. Rest in Peace, this was a good listen today.
I mean, is it overplayed? sure. Does it rock? absolutely. The second half shows they're more than just singles.
classic album with one of my favorite black sabbath tracks in war pigs. R.I.P. Ozzy 🪦
Classic metal.
Pure great tunes, one of my favourite bands.
War Pigs is one of my favorite songs of all time, but I still don’t think I listen to it often enough. Every track is sublime. I will definitely be listening to this again and again.
A classic. War Pigs, Paranoid, & Iron Man are well loved songs. Planet Caravan and Electric Funeral are my personal favorites.
I remember the first time I heard this album it blew my mind as a kid. My dad told me after he got this album, he and his friends started a band and they convinced their church pastor to let them play during a service. When they went to perform, they put on black robes and tried covering Ozzy. The congregation was not happy, but it made for a great experience. Top to bottom heavy metal, I've never been a fan of Ozzy's vocals but it just works for this music.
Absolutely rules. I’m convinced there aren’t any good riffs left to be discovered. At least minor pentatonic rock riffs. Black Sabbath didn’t use up ALL of them. But probably most of them.
One of the greatest classic rock albums of the 70’s.
Incredible album and very appropriate timing. RIP Ozzy
Fantastic album. Straight banger. You need to listen to this.
Innovation. What timing, aligning with the date of Ozzy's passing
Done
Very timely!!
A true heavy metal classic. R.I.P. Ozzy.
I've listened to it so many times that I can skip this pat and rate it anyway. FIVE FUCKING STARS. ABSOLUTE BANGER. One of the best albums of all time. There's no bad (even mid) song on this album, although Side A is STELLAR (War Pigs, Paranoid, Planet Caravan and Iron Man, one after the other), being better than Side B. Lucky for me that I had the privilege of seeing this legends (3/4 of them, at least) live twice. RIP Ozzy
This being sent to me the day after Ozzy passing, what an incredible album.
holy fuck that was good
One of the best metal albums of all time.
Beast album, spawned a genre, RIP Ozzy. War Pigs is the best.
Brilliant album top to bottom by an incredible band. Pioneers of the dark and sinister sounding music that defined heavy metal. RIP John Michael Osbourne (3 December 1948 – 22 July 2025) - Good night, sweet prince of darkness, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest
This album is awesome. It features three of the most famous Black Sabbath songs, and their two career-best songs open the album back-to-back. Outside of those three, the album was new to me. Hand of Doom is a major highlight. Planet Caravan is an interesting almost psychedelic song. I can see why this album is considered a landmark of heavy metal.
First of all, RIP Ozzy. This album is one of these rock albums where all the songs are hymns. Paranoid, Hand of Doom, War Pigs, Iron man, Electric Funeral... Because of this, it need to be a 5 stars even if it's not as groundbreaking as the debut. In this sense, it reminds me to some other albums like The Number of the Beast, Back in Back or Appetite for Destruction, where nearly every song is a hit single itself. Besides this, what can we say that hasn't been said already? This is perfection and this is the birth of the best musical genre of the history of mankind: Heavy Metal.
Great album, although there are others from Black Sabbath that I prefer. Still, it's great end to end; Electric Funeral is probably my favorite track.
Hell just inherited a new GM. RIP KING 🦇
Heavy, doomy, dark, and druggy. Revolutionary in 1970, and still feeling critical, fresh, and relevant in 2025. Sabbath creates a cohesive tone and feeling throughout the album. Memorable and powerful guitar riffs, frantic solos, nimble and melodic bass, pounding yet precise drumming, and dreary sci-fi tales of insanity, esoterica, apocalypse, and war criticism spewing with equal vigor and dread from Ozzy’s mouth(though penned by Butler). The full band is engaged and essential - Ozzy, Iommi, Butler, and Ward all bring a key component that intersect to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. And that’s what makes Sabbath and this album great - the band had a unique vision and a singular mission to transmit that to us, and did so effectively. But I do question if their legacy holds if the song “Iron Man” stuck with the original title “Iron Bloke.”
I don't know if this is random or intentional but, either way, I am happy to listen to Ozzy Osbourne in tribute to the greatness we lost. One of the best to ever do it in metal. RIP - You get 5 stars as does this album.
I'm not very well versed in Black Sabbath, in fact most of what I know about the band is contained on this album. But man, what an album. A literal genre defining work of art that hits as hard today as it did 55 years ago. Not only that but I'm served this album the day after Ozzy dies. Sort of a sad serendipity.
Starts with grand weighty guitar tones and then the drums come rolling in. I expected the voice to come in and play back up to the guitars and drums, but it was glorious. The hefty chords and drums continued throughout, really enjoyed it but weaned towards the end. War Pigs is a tune for sure.
The only problem with this album is I can’t get it loud enough. War Pigs, Paranoid, Planet Caravan, Iron Man, Electric Funeral, Hand of Doom, Rat Salad, and finishing with Fairies Wear Boots. Come on man. The flawless Sabbath album. Absolute peak.
This is such a great album. RIP Ozzy.
Despite this album, undoubtably, being handed to every person who hadn't listened to it on this list, the day after Ozzy passed, it really is phenomenal. I constantly return to songs off of Paranoid because they're just flat out good tunes. There's a part of me that really wants to give this album 5 stars, but I try not to give them out for nothing. And I really do enjoy Master of Reality and Heaven and Hell (RIP Dio) slightly more than Paranoid. This one still sits extremely solid.
Ozzy died yesterday. I can't help but think this wasn't an accident, but human brains are prone to make those connections; who knows? This was Sabbath's best album, on the strength of War Pigs alone. The vast majority of bands will never write a song that interesting and groovy, let alone with an evergreen theme like the callousness with which those in power lead us into conflict. War Pigs is defined by tension. The syncopation between Bill Ward's drums and Geezer Butler's bass, the whole song's slowness to return to the root, the couple of guitar solos, the strain in Ozzy Osbourne's voice, and the iconic quiet/loud call-and-response between the hi-hats and the strings that back Ozzy's near-a capella delivery in the verses. The song is so spare in the sung parts and so busy in the instrumental sections. Luke's Wall (the outro instrumental) has a two-bar guitar hook repeating for its first third (making you wonder when it'll develop), but it sounds as much like a siren as anything. It's urgency, emergency, war. The song is heavy but also often very quiet; it's written around a minor blues scale, which gives the tension of shifting between a major and a minor feel (that's the blues, baby) but never commits to it (go read someone who knows what they're talking about on this; the song shifts all over the place) -- this is a profoundly influential harmonic choice in heavy metal and in this song, gives the composition both a tense or dark feeling, but also a sadness. Again, war. Sabbath used a lot of dark imagery related to Christian views of the occult (and arguably Christian-tinged views of paganism) but the things that they framed as evil (other than themselves) were usually recognizably so: by the end of the song, 'Satan laughing / spreads his wings' because of the outcomes of, again, war. The true evil isn't Sabbath themselves, but the song's titular War Pigs and war, itself. Paranoid is fine, Iron Man is kinda boring (probably overexposure), the rest is just top-notch proto-metal. The whole thing is full of the jazz/blues fusion corner case that underpins heavy metal, still. Honestly, Sabbath were excellent (so fucking grooving), this is them at the peak of their powers and the first track on this record is good enough that you should stop what you're doing *right now* and listen to it, if you haven't heard it before. Pull over. Put it on Spotify. Rest in power, Ozzy. 5/5
BEST SONGS: - Paranoid - Planet Caravan - Fairies Wear Boots RIP Ozzy
How fitting to get this album on the day Ozzy has passed. Absolutely love this album. Starts strong and and keeps going right until the end.
Majestic
This album is perfect, cover to cover, no debate
I didn’t give this five stars because of sentimentality- this album is truly a striking cultural commentary on the Vietnam era, touching on war, drugs, and class struggle. Honest and shaking with themes that continue to resonate
classic
Legendary band, legendary album!
🤘🎸🥁🧨 Dynamite album from Start to finish, one of all time favorites.
I had just relistened after the Back to the Beginning concert and I happily relistened again. Maybe a top 30 album of all time for me. Bill Ward goes crazy on this album, Iommi makes multiple iconic riffs that almost every guitar player ends up learning, and Geezer keeps the arrangements tight with an incredible tone. Perfect album and rest in peace to the Prince of Darkness, your legacy will live on forever Of course then there’s Ozzy delivering some of the best performances of his career along with some of the most well written Sabbath songs in their catalogue. War Pigs, Iron Man, and Paranoid are eternal. It has my favorite Sabbath song, Electric Funeral, a massive precursor to doom metal.
It's got all the hits. War Pigs is one of the greatest songs of all time. Has surprisingly jazzy elements in songs like Rat Salad. A personal favorite.
Planet Caravan is amazing.
Always awesome
Got this albums as my first album, the day after Ozzy die. This make me sob. Rip Ozzy
Clearly a classic. One of the best metal albums of all time. Songs added to/on playlist: - War Pigs - Paranoid - Iron Man - Planet Caravan - Hand of Doom
Got it in the generator just the day after Ozzy died. A band that changed my brain chemistry when I was 13
5/5 Rip ozzy
Classic! What can you say about this album! Every song is incredible! Black Sabbath at the peak of their powers!
The most important metal album of them all. Metal doesn't exist without this. Grunge sounds very different without this. Ozzy, Tony, Geezer, and Bill marched into a studio and changed everything about rock and roll music, and I'm not just saying that because Ozzy died the day before I wrote this.
Fundamental and mighty. Sets the standard for all metal albums.
Banger from start to finish
I’ve always loved that album. Bangers after bangers. Rip Ozzy
THEE Black Sabbath!
If you are to own just one Black Sabbath album, this should be the one. Yes, I know Master of Reality is so very close, but this is the one. It I brilliant! Surprised that with the four albums I have seen thus far in this journey, two have been Black Sabbath. I like heavy metal, at least some of it, and Black Sabbath would be at the top of my list for this genre from an artist perspective.
Awesome Heavy metal album!
Black Sabbath were truly innovators!! What other music in 1970 even sounded like that?! They made a timeless album that sounds just as good today as it did then. RIP Ozzy
own it. keeper. RIP Ozzy
What a start for heavy metal.
This album is great from start to finish A side is full of hits and songs that have been covered by other artist; such as Planet Caravan, which was covered by Pantera. B sides are loaded with deep cuts that flows well together. Its beautifully arranged.
Great album
