There are some melodies and ideas which try to extend beyond the rock canon here, but ultimately they're crushed by the mediocrity of noodling, overlong track lengths, and harsh vocals.

The previous Doors album from this list: Morrison Hotel is more of a favourite but this album is also very, very good, immediately from the opening song.

Frankly, I was not really in the mood for some Doors beforehand, but certainly on the second listen I quite enjoyed this album. Like Morrison Hotel, it sounds very bluesy, but the songs on this album were a lot more interesting, and the closing track Riders on the Storm is one of my favourite Doors songs.

This is becoming a tired refrain but again: if you're boiling half a century worth if pop, punk, hip hop, rock, plus a smattering of jazz, country, and world music down to 1K+1... I just can't justify multiple Doors entries - and I LIKE the Doors. And this one... despite some great songs it also displays some of Morrison's lazy phone in efforts. The blues retreads in particular are pure filler.

Whatever. Too blues-y and monotonous. Never was a huge fan of Morrison's voice. Riders of the Storm is the definitive highlight, that song's great.

Very strong A Side, B-Side gets a little slower but Riders on the Storm is a great closer. The Doors were huge for a reason, great album.

Possibly the Doors finest and most coherent album. LA Woman is very blues driven and features some of Ray Manzarek’s best work on keys. The band as a whole plays very well on this album and Jim Morrison’s vocal delivery is energetic as always.

Hey it's the Doors... Moody and brooding blues and rock. Good speed and energy without being overwhelming and a couple of solid hits. It's good. A lot of the same thing. Probably wouldn't listen through the whole thing again.

3, it's fine. I was pretty into it at first but it kind of drug on. I definitely do like this era of music, but I'm finding I need variety to really enjoy it. An entire album from the same band gets to be a bit much of the same sound over and over, I need the variety of different bands from the era. What a baller move though to put your biggest hit as the LAST track on the album, eh?

Solid production, sounds great. Not a huge fan. Riders on the Storm is a solid classic. 1st half of the record is better than the last half IMO. Good blues rock but a bit too much psychedelic influence? IDK. Not my cup of tea.

I think a generous 4 for this one. It's a pretty funky album but I prefer their debut.

Some see this as a return to form, has some great songs and of course Morrisons Swan Song with the band, "Riders On The Storm". I don't think this is their best but a couple of classic tracks in "The Changeling" and "Love Her Madly"

It has a nice fury to it, but it doesn’t have that full sound I really like. Gives me a nice vibe though with its pumpy(?), hard feeling songs. I really enjoy the instruments they use as well.

Jim Morrison sounds like such a mess on this to me. I could take or leave this one, but I do love Riders on the Storm. That one works for me all the way. Love Her Madly is also strong. But the rest... ehhhhh.

Gruff and bearish is my favourite incarnation of Mr Mojo Risin', and overall this is the best Doors album by a long chalk. There are moments of magic sprinkled throughout, but even the more workaday moments sound of a piece. Has an electric piano sounded sexier?

Some classics, some basics. I like it better than the other one we listened to. But really, this band will always be one I associate more with movies than with the music itself. And now I’m sitting here thinking I should go look up some Doors review by Lester Bangs because of Phillip Seymour Hoffman and I’m a go do that. Peace.

Pretty Damn fine album, but eclipsed by their first. 'The End' is one of my all time favourite tracks. Visited my old school friends at Keele Uni in I think 1979 and they had that track playing on repeat all night. Imprinted...

"I am a victim of a hate crime!"... I hate The Doors. I like some other blues rock but The Doors are so repetitive and I hate Morrison's voice. Riders on the Storm is ok though.

Such an amazing album front to back

OK, a Doors album that's not the self titled one... Well, I wasn't in the mood at all when I first put it on, but within a couple of tracks it had won me over. Definitely a solid album worth some more listens! Fave track - "Riders on the Storm" is a classic, and I think the only track I was properly familiar with in advance. "L.A. Woman" is a great tune too...

Good album, but a bit samey. Not a huge fan of the organ being so prominent on all the songs, but that happens when you have an organist. Good vocals, often bizarre lyrics, largely unexciting music

Excellent Blues & Rock album. Thought I knew the Doors better than I really did but learned a lot listening to this in full. Love the blues instrumentals and the vocal repetitions/build ups. Plenty of energy and emotion. The changeling, been down so long, LA women 4.5

Pretty enjoyable listen. Sounded like a really good blues band jamming for the most part. One thing I never understood with the doors was the keyboard that seemed sort of out of place. Definitely was the case here.

Always good to listen to The Doors

Out of the 6 Doors studio albums (not counting those without Morrison) this is my 3rd favorite behind their debut album and Morrison Hotel, but it’s still a 5 star album.

Bit disappointing, some funky bits but the singing on some tracks was quite droney.

Interesting! Sounds like all the corner blues players on the streets and in bars. Singer was not that great, but this was the 70s.

The Doors were my go-to band in late HS/early college. I had a big poster of Jim Morrison on the wall and secretly wanted to be a rock star. Some of the poetry rings as a bit hokey to me now, but I still love their songs, vocals, and unique sound. LA Woman is top to bottom probably their best , with competition from their first album. Such a shame that Morrison died 3 months after this album was released, when they were seemingly at their peak.

There was a time when I would choose to listen to The Doors. I've heard a few of the tracks on this album so many times. I don't believe I've heard this album as a whole before. There were some tracks that seemed like they were new to me. With enough time listening to and seeing performances from Jim Morrison, I can't get past feeling like Morrison was just a creepy letch. Some of the lyrics are definitely sung by a creepy letch. The tracks that possibly aren't so creepy still hang on to that uncertain feeling that I'll figure out what the songs really mean, and it just took me a while to realize that Morrison is just being a creep again. I do love the work on the keyboards fom Ray Manzarek. "Riders on the Storm" is the prime example of what Manzarek can do, and it is a track that I will go back to. Other tracks on the album keep me listening just for Manzarek's contribution. There are tracks on the album that I know I would skip every time ("Been Down So Long", "Crawling King Snake"). Knowing that I would skip at least 2 or 3 tracks keeps the album below the line for "okay".

By his final album Jim Morrison is sounding weathered and this album is all the better for it. The Door have went for a pure blues album - including a more than decent Johnny Lee Hooker cover - and to be honest it doesn’t always work. LA woman and Riders of the Storm are epic, incredible songs, the later in particular still capable or raising the hairs on the back of my neck with every listen. But on the whole this is a bit patchy and not a good as their debut. An album with great songs, but not a great album.

Just brilliant from start to finish. The band just sound so tight throughout and you can hear how Morrison’s voice had changed. It’s fair to say that maybe five or six of these songs are up there among the best of their kind but that it also contains two or three absolute bonafide classics, namely LA Woman and Riders. The final track is up there as one of my favorite songs ever… to think that Morrison whispering the song title at the end was the last thing he ever put on record before he died. I won’t leave it so long next time before listening to this album again ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Super bluesy. JM is unbelievable. So far yet super controlled. Great band lockin. They are so tight together to allow Morrison to do what he do. The opening (Changeling) is great and contrasts well A side close with LA Woman B side close with Riders on the Storm.

Really good psychedelic 60s vibes. Surprised to hear some disco sounding baselines. Some dodgy lyrics by modern standards I think. Will definitely be back for another listen.

The blues-based rock on L.A. Woman sometimes makes for an entertaining listen, though the record largely unimpresses me. This is mainly due to tracks filled with monotone and unengaging vocals, sleep-inducing guitars and dragging on for way too long. A 2/5.

Bluesier than I like my rock, but having heard many The Doors songs before I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

Fucking classic. Every song. One of the best albums of all time. Prolly listened to this 100 times. Hyacinth House, one of my all time favs.

Most enjoyable. Was aware of the well known songs but had not listened to the whole album before. It hangs together pretty well, so much so that I let it run through a second time.

Not a ton to dislike about The Doors. Except maybe for some Jim Morrison silliness. Sort of a link between classic southern country blues and glam/new wave pop rock. Clearly California. I love this album.

I'm always torn on the doors. They have some great songs, good riffs and vocals sometimes, and other times their songs just drag on for seven minutes going nowhere, with endless keyboard solos. This is a 48 minute album but it has enough material for a killer 20 minute ep.

I like how bluesy this is. I know the couple hit songs from this and like them a lot, but was surprised by how rough Jim Morrison's voice is on much of the album. All the hits I've heard usually aren't so gravelly.

Stripped of any lingering psychedelic pretense or lounge act crooner aspirations, L.A. Woman captures a rock band embracing their roots and delivers. This is a blues album, no way around it. The band is hitting on all cylinders and Jim's voice has matured, either through whiskey and cigarettes, or age, into a convincingly legitimate bluesman. The song writing is tip top. The performances are inspired. The production is warm and accessible. L.A. Woman hints at the band's evolutionary direction that could have been. I fucking love this album.

Pastiche blues apart from Riders On The Storm which sounds like The Doors does lounge music. I like the one that sounds a bit like a carnival version of the Only Fools And Horses theme tune though.

Good Bluesy album. The Doors are overrated I think, and I believe that mostly has to do with the cult following of the personality of Jim.

I thought this was going to be a mariachi band, but then I realized it was "L.A" Woman, not "La" Woman. L.A. Woman is my favorite Doors song. Hyacinth House is a hidden gem.

I have always felt like I knew nothing about The Doors. They were always that band I should probably listen to at some point. Morrison Hotel reinforced that a few weeks ago when it came up. Highly enjoyable, but all new to me! This album was a surprise because I think I've heard every one of these songs before. This is like a greatest hits album, but it's a regular album. These guys do blues-rock really well, and that's undeniable.

I know some songs from the Doors, but have never been through an entire album in one sitting. I enjoyed it but it was nothing to write home about. croon out of 5

I had previously heard their self-titled album, but didn't care for it. I think I like the bluesier sound here more, but it's still not for me. It's not about the album (or the band) itself being good or bad, it's just not the style of music I like.

Yes, they are good

That organ sound! Thin, fruity, and flows so well over the grooves. Very enoyable, and lyrically interesting. The bluesier numbers feel cool as fuck. L'America is a JAM. The rhodes piano on Riders on the Storm is a great example of Manzarek's lightness of touch and melodic ear.

Goddamn Val Kilmer can sing (kidding). His voice sounds pretty different to later albums, loved how bluesy it is and how Riders on the Storm reminds me of Need For Speed Underground 2.

The Doors are right up my alley. I am starting to find it a bit strange that some of my favourites in this project are as old as I am. I feel very at home with these guys, it's no effort. Sometimes I say a thing is 'not for me', this is the entire opposite, this is for me, made for people like me to enjoy. I so would have been a Doors obsessed fangirl.

1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die day 19, and boy, I have a doozy of an album for you today! The Doors released their sixth, and final studio album, L.A. Woman in 1971. The Doors is a band that probably doesn’t need an introduction, but being that this album is now fifty years old, I will preface with a brief bit of their history. The Doors were the epitome of the sixties counter culture, wild, free and controversial. Vocalist Jim Morrison had a persona larger than life, yet was a very mysterious person. Morrison was a supremely intelligent man and used the mystique that surrounded The Doors to great advantage. While being a magnificent showman, Morrison would often show up to recording sessions and performances drunk and wild, and would sometimes incite riots in the crowd. The Doors frontman would face many criminal charges stemming from his risky antics, including indecency, public obscenity, lewd and lascivious behavior, indecent exposure, public profanity and public drunkenness. Morrison remains the first and only musician to be arrested on stage during a performance. It’s an understatement to say that Jim Morrison had a disdain for authority and was not one to conform to anyones laws, rules or social standards other than his own. The Lizard King joined the 27 Club in 1971, when he died in Paris, France at the age of 27, Joining other icons such as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, and was quoted by some as saying he would be number 3 in this tragic “club”. His death remains surrounded in mystery fifty years later. Morrison never shied away from the idea of death in his music either. Is being subconsciously suicidal a thing? I can’t help but to feel like doom was in the playbook for this artistically genius/madman. Now, onto the music. The Doors is a band that cannot be confined to any type of genre. While L.A. Woman is widely considered a Rock album, its more Rhythm & Blues than anything. There is some serious tickling of the ivory going down on this record. Keyboardist and co-founder of The Doors, Ray Manzarek shines on every track.

Great album!

I like the doors. This is the album that features riders on the storm, LA women, and love her madly. That being said I do prefer the doors album to this one.

Good, favorite songs The Channeling, stereotypically 70s rock. Catchy, hypnotic songs laid back vibe. Liked it a lot but didn't love it. 6/8.

It's amazing the range of moods this album can drag you through, especially from been down so long, to cars hiss by my window, and finally to L.A. Woman. Been down so long, L.A. Woman, the WASP, and Riders on the storm are def my favorites, in no particular order.

Stoner rock is not so much my jam.

It's impossible to listen to this album and not feel like the coolest person around. Best track: Riders on the Storm

Hard Blues Rock. I like the genre, and I can appreciate everything they do technically, but the guy's voice and the overall 'sound' aren't my favourite. The lead guitar solos are consistently good though

I totally get the disdain for the Doors, but for me I have been a long time fan. L.A. Woman in particular hits a lot of right notes for me as this dark blues output, in line with the band's refocused approach to their style, which went from dark psychedelia to a scruffy blues band. Plus Morrison vocally is way more interesting as an alcoholic crooner than he was as the Lizard King. I also just remember hearing many of these tracks growing up on a local radio station so it has stuck with me. It's very dark, very gritty, but also showcases how great the band musically was outside of Morrison, but you can't have them work without him. Favorite tracks: Riders on the Storm, The Changeling, L.A. Woman, WASP Texas Radio

I have a soft spot for The Doors, and especially for Riders. The reason for that particular affection is embarrassing: A rather cheesy recording of a "Doors concerto" by Nigel Kennedy. So my impression is slightly fuzzier and warmer than it should be, objectively. All that said: The bluesier sound suits the band about as well as can be expected. Morrison sounds like himself but not in an insufferable way. The first half plays it a bit safe, perhaps.

Solid Doors album, but not my favorite of theirs

Classic album, classic singles, defines an era of rock and roll, ends with riders on the storm, what's not to like?

This is fun! Kind of funky, guitars are good Vocals are fine, not great but not offputting Few of the songs are a bit long but overall this is really good! Cohesive but songs are all pretty different and distinct Faves - The Changeling, Love Her Madly, Crawling King Snakes Overall - I enjoyed this! Good solid rock music, fun to listen to Rating - 4/5

L.A. Woman was meant to represent a new path forward for The Doors, that the ragged whirlwind of their stardom would be settled and they'll get into a different groove that suggested there being more than what met the eye. Alas, with Jim Morrison perishing in a Paris bathtub not longer after this, this is the only document of what would be a pipe dream but it is a tantalizing one nonetheless. Favorites: The Changeling, Love Her Madly, L.A. Woman, L'America, Hyacinth House, Riders in the Storm.

Some good tracks (“Hyacinth House,” “L’America,” title track), but rarely captures what was great and cool about them in the first place (“Riders On the Storm”).
