Reviews (page 12 of 13)
RIDERS OF THE STOOORM
album #14 i didn't vibe with any song on this album, unfortunately. it's fine! i just don't care to listen to it again. the doors are influential, but not sure if this album should make it to the list when there is simply better blues music out there lol. number of albums left to review: 1,075 number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 7 albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 3 albums from the list I won't include on my list: 11
After a Bowie album, here’s another hyped album/group that I’m just not into aside from Riders on the Storm….can’t not think of IASIP when I hear that song now. That’s about the only good thing I can say about this album. Otherwise, I’m just not into The Doors. Someone here said this didn’t age well, and I agree. Comes out flat, rough and noisy. I think mediocre white blues rock was more hyped and accepted back then.
I just don't get The Doors.
When I was a teenager I thought I liked The Doors. Now I can take it or leave it.
The title track and Riders on the Storm are great but the rest of it is standard blues rick that gets boring real fast.
riders on the storm as a last song saved it tbh
Started out ok then tailed off. I find the Doors pretty blah, and the two most famous tracks on this album (LA Woman and Riders on the Storm) were among the weakest tracks on the album.
They had some good stuff. I still don’t get how people moon over them. Overrated imho
Ah yes - this was very helpful. Queen, Bowie and THE DOORS. Are my Top3 "no, sorry music professionals and connoisseurs - I just don't get it" LA Woman is fine track, and then there's some bluesy stuff going on. OK. And?
I found the bluesier songs interminable, the others were fine. Blues really isn't my cup of tea.
This was boring. Morrison’s voice sounded like a comedy singer and I felt the whole thing was shameless rip off of black American blues. I expected better.
I overall like The Doors and have listened to them passively for a year or so and I also tend to enjoy blues/psych-rock. This album, however, was just not hitting for me despite it definitely having elements of things I typically enjoy. It just felt a little soulless and saying that makes me feel like some artsy vinyl collecting man is going to materialize and mansplain it to me. Idk I was just kinda bored and waiting for it to end… I still liked some tracks which I listed below and from what I’ve read Ik this was like the band getting back to their roots and that it was the last album Morrison physically recorded before his death which is cool and all but doesn’t take away from what I said before. This album feels like it should be important/classic but for me if I want blues/psych-rock I’m gonna look elsewhere. Rating⭐️: 2/5 Top 3🪐: 1)Love Her Madly 2)Hyacinth House 3)The WASP or Riders on the Storm (inspired by ghost rides in the sky allegedly which is cool)
From a pure pure enjoyment level, it’s hard for me to remove this album from its time. It’s a very specific style to the era that doesn’t hold up today personally. This gives it a whiskey level roughness where most of what I appreciate from this album is covered by its agedness. Faves: L.A. Woman, Love Her Madly, Hyacinth House
It was alright, only really enjoyed the hits and other than that it was pretty mid blues music and unoriginal blues too. 4/10.
Riders on the Storm will never be enough to get me to enjoy anything else by The Doors.
Every song would be better with no keyboard solo. I'd happily take banger 2 minute songs over these self indulgent 6 minute versions.
1 legendary song, the rest was okay
It was ok
Riders on the Storm is pretty much a banger. It sounds out of place after the rest of this boring white boy blues, which can get in the bin.
Did not know what to expect but this was not it. What happened to The Doors' The Doors? Best Song: Riders on the Storm Rating: 4.5/10 Stars: 2
Sound of the 60’s-70’s rock bands. Think of rock bands in that era, The Doors come to mind. Some good music.
A contemporary listen to this old Doors album doesn't age them terribly well. Morrison is a capable interpreter of Blues music, but reflecting on the canon of the (largely Black) musicians that he emulated, he doesn't seem particularly special. The infusion of psychedelic rock takes things in a new direction from the 60s psychedelia that preceded it, so in this sense, the album is something of a watershed. Listening to it doesn't stir anything significant in me, though. Outside of hits like the titular L.A. Woman and Riders on the Storm, most of these songs are fairly bland.
Great organ, annoying vocals, decent songs
I'm not a fan. I can't ever imagine a situation where I would put on a The Doors album, not even this one. They're not "unlistenable," I just don't care about any of these songs.
The most annoying guy in my high school class loooved the doors, so I'm a bit biased against this.
Bit annoying but it was ok
“The monk bought lunch”
It's my third Doors album and I still don't really get it. Every song feels like it's eight minutes long, even the ones that clock in at less than four.
Yawn, this is so fucking boring. The Doors are overrated and so is Jim Morrison. They wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t insist on themselves. Frankly, I would rather listen to The Black Album.
I hate the Doors....
Created at a time America was to looked up to. Now not so much. Dated
A chill album, very laid back rock. Favourite track: Love Her Madly
🥇love her madly 🥈hyacinth house 🥉L.A. woman HM: riders on the storm
4/10 - Favorite song: LA woman
I really liked the sound of the album as a whole but no song stuck out in particular to me.
I have some weird bias against The Doors. I've never liked them and I don't know why, but this album has reinforced my dislike. I hate the way they sound. The singer sounds like he is coughing his words out. The general sound and vibe makes me feel claustrophobic, like I'm in a bad dream that I can't wake up from. Other than that....
If Jim Morrison didn't die young, the Doors would be remembered as average at best.
Wasn’t for me.
Okay, meget politisk
Not for me
Welp, as a rule- The Doors don’t do it for me. Of course there are some exceptions (The Wasp is reminiscent to velvet underground),but still not my favorite. Blues-rock is not my thing.
A bad album from a good band. And not just bad compared to their prior work. This is just all over the place trying different styles and not even sounding good in their own style.
Whatever girl
I thought I liked The Doors, but this was a bit of a chore to get through. Riders On The Storm is excellent and a clear highlight. A couple of other songs were alright. I like the style more than the substance, I guess.
I mean yeah
Hyacinth House fue mi favorita, el ritmo y la letra me atraparon. La verdad no es un disco que escucharía por mi misma, un ritmo muy setentero que no fue mi favorito.
too country, did not enjoy much :(
This isn't really my type of music. I do like some of the Doors, but what most would know of as their hits. I appreciate the bluesy synth feel, but it just isn't for me.
Very bluesy. I prefer their debut album.
I hate the doors every time I listen to it - with veeeeery few exceptions - I feel like I'm in a desert with no water for 30 years and I'm already hallucinating and dying of heat, and I mean that in the worst possible way
Boooooooring
The Doors aren't really for me unfortunately
ehhh…don’t like it. not a big fan of “classical rock” i guess? the production sounds strange, perhaps because i’m used to modern styles
not really my cup of tea
not my cup fine L'america is nails on a chalkboard
The greatest CIA funded band in history, recruited him for his psychical attractiveness. Something, something MK-Ultra. Something, something CIA circus music playing. Something, something, I eat more chicken than any man ever. Something, something, she gets high. Something, something, eat more pork, beans and chicken because I'm the back door man. She poops everywhere, Hol up the bathrooms are clear. Something, something about Indians and Snakes. Thank you Jim Morrison for some truly groundbreaking music.
The instrumentals are nice at times, but the vocals are bad. The WASP is an awful track.
Not terrible but pretty boring
The older I get, the more I appreciate the music layers and sound, and the more I'm creeped out by the words.
I have a deep detestation of this record. It feels arrogant, but way past ripe. Reminds me of an overripe banana that you can smell across the kitchen, "mmm banana, this'll be good," you think. Then you pick it up, and it's all mushy and disgusting; it must be 27 days old. Not good at all, just in your face and past its prime. There are far better Doors records and far better bananas.
not my thing i get its supposed to be objectively good its just eh
Not charmed by this album. As a lyrics listener, the vocals are unbearably muffled and I'm not impressed when I can hear the words. Overall I was very very bored and unconvinced by the blues of these lazy guys.
Doors are fine, nothing that I’d get excited about
Half of the songs sound like a wasted guy singing karaoke, which I wouldn't mind as much if the band didn't sound so clean. It comes together (enough) for some of the songs though
Never had that certain urge to get familiar with The Doors nor had I ever read or heard anything that would've gotten me interested enough. Well, looks like I haven't missed much since this album doesn't really do anything for me. Riders on the Storm is decent.
I don’t like dad rock I guess
Ughh. Turns out I have run out of patience/tolerance for The Doors. Did not enjoy. No thank you. Not for this beardo.
👍🏻
First track is very hard hitting. Nice. Track 2 the bass sounds great, but the doors don't have a bass player... Third song is a decent blues track. Good slide guitars, but I've heard some better blues in my life. Four aswell. Not crazy about the heavy blues influence here. I my opinion the Doors advantage is not in being a blues band. L.A woman and L'america aren't my favorite stuff but they have much more character. I think track 7 is my favorite so far. Lush instrumentation, more interesting harmony content. A truly beautiful song. 8 and 9, although played fine enough, are not my cup of tea. Once again a bit of flavorless blues tracks. Meh. Riders On the Storms is an example of what the doors can be when they're into it really. Such a masteful dark, moody enchanted song. Great playing as always, but now with the write context. This is not a record for me. Although the highlights are high (especially 7 and the closer of course) it's not a fun listen front to back . That's why it's, unfortunately, a 2. Maybe 2.3-4.
293/1089 - Not a fan of CIA funded circus blues music. Riders on the Storm was cool.
Some psychedelic blues rock and a bunch of jangly hippie nonsense. Riders on the Storm still holds up though.
109/1089 I don’t have a lot to say about this album. objectively, i can see the merit, i can see how it fits its place and time. However, that isn’t for me. It’s a type of dated rock music that i just don’t care for and can’t get into really. that said it did have a couple highlights in Hyacinth House and L’America 28/100
Other than the well known tracks on here - I really don't like this drug addled album. Over rated.
Funky but the songs seemed overly long and repetitive.
listened to this on the beginning of a walk i got totally rained on. i’ve heard of the doors all my life but didn’t this is what they sounded like. also like something my dad would like 7/10 for music 3/10 for me personally fave track: hyacinth house
I just really don't like The Doors. I used to but something about the mix and the repetitiveness of lyrics. I just can't listen to them.
A couple of brilliant songs but the blues numbers felt flat and lacking. Like imitation. They might have brought the blues to the masses in a way to OGs couldn’t but hearing it after all these years it feels borrowed.
More like, The Moors...as in...I want to listen to The Doors some more! :D
6/10
I don't understand the hype.
Riders on the Storm is a great song. The WASP is a weird song that's about 50% great, mainly because of trippy, epic-sounding lyrics like "out here on the perimeter there are no stars; out here, we are stoned, immaculate." The other 50%, sadly, includes a musically stupid chorus and one line in particular that, like the Doors' music generally, has aged badly.
2/5 - The hits are well known and great, but the rest of the album was mostly standard blues tunes, and didn’t do much for me. I didn’t need to hear this, and I’ve heard enough of The Doors to last me.
The doors alright
It's a '70s rock album for sure ... yeah, that's it
One of the most overrated bands of all time. Can’t help but feel that the only reason they’re so celebrated is due to Morrison’s death.
love her madly, l.a. woman, riders on the storm all duh, rest meh
'L.A. Woman'. What a tune! Some other nice moments. But I ain't got the blues I guess. Two stars.
For a couple of years as a young teen I tried very hard to like this band because my POP did. The only result is that it's now hard to hear Jim Morrison's voice or Ray Manzarek's keys without a flood of other associations. For me The Doors are both the sound of 70s Southern California excess and of burly dudes drinking endless cans of Rainier beer and cursing while working on cars thousands of miles away. Set all that aside and I can see why they were popular at the time. And yet, it never really took or I wore myself out trying. We could bond over other bands, but not The Doors.
The Doors might be my pick for most overrated band in rock history. Some okay songs but a lot of this is overlong, basic blues that I find quit boring.
I was surprised, but I really did not enjoy this. I only knew Riders on the Storm. I love a Doors song (People are Strange), but I did not like Jim Morrison’s voice on this album.
A couple of decent tunes, but a bit disappointing really. Enjoyed the Chase and Status sample
Album Cover Art Review - meh - great picture, but the group was on fumes at this point so probably didn't get time to think about album cover much. - I do like the font Album - I like their sound actually, kind of evolving to more soulful, "bigger" sound. Love a few of the songs - don't know if this holds up very well. Kind of a drugged out feel to the whole thing.
listened to this album on the way back from Indiana. The songs are kinda samey, but some felt like the blues. Eh, the album is mid. I wasn’t too impressed. Better than Bob Dylan tho.
One last gasp from the corniest guys to ever do it, and this time they're bluesmen! Surprisingly funky opener then it slows into a plodding 12 bar formula for a while. The fuzzy guitar leads are nice in that quintessential 60s psych way and the massive swirling organ sounds work great - they're at their best when they're a jamband. 12 good songs spread over 6 albums makes them a very frustrating band.
Meh
The Doors! I remember listening to the album with the guy’s shadowy face on the cover a few years back, though I never finished it – I just couldn’t get into the sound. I was hoping that this list would give me the opportunity to return to some long-scorned bands for a second opinion, and this is one of them. Yeah, it’s not bad. Definitely what I was expecting from this band – a cool, subdued blues rock album. I’m not too big on blues rock as the last handful of albums have made blatantly clear, though this was a better-than-average outing. I think I just like Jim Morrison for being an iconic musician. Not a bad way to spend the night, all things considered, though I think there’s too many moments on this album where little to nothing is happening or the songs trail on for way longer than they ever needed to be. “Been Down So Long” has a nice sound. “L.A. Woman” is a song I’m confident I’ve heard before. That, or Morrison is too recognisable for his own good. In any case, the song is good. The subdued, bassy sound is among the best on the album, and I enjoy the aforementioned vocal performance. I also quite like the piano number in between, too. Man, this album waited until the last possible moment to hit me with a song I recognise. “Riders On the Storm” is the best song on the album by a pretty wide margin. Again, it’s all cool confidence. Big fan of the rain ambience midway through the track, too. It meshes surprisingly well with the music. I’m gonna check the book. A whole lot of nothing in there, really. Wikipedia picks up the slack by revealing that this was Jim Morrison’s last album, the album charted well and is regarded as one of the Door’s better works. Yeah, this seems like a decent pick.
I don't really care for the doors on the whole. A few really amazing songs. Generational moments. Aside from that myeh.
I really think these guys are kind of dull. "Riders on the Storm" and the title track are just way too long for the number of musical ideas they contain. "WASP" is super-boring, almost to the point where I think maybe it's supposed to be a joke.
Basic version of a bunch of other genres and some outdated attempts to be seductive. Not loads to love here. Couple good grooves.
Dull and uninspiring. Not a fan of The Doors, but can’t like everything I suppose
Mid
Some great songs some absolute garbage
More of a 2.5, but I stand by that the Doors are the most overrated band of this era. Nothing on here is bad (and Riders on the Storm is awesome), but it doesn't stand out at all compared to contemporary bands.
As much as I like The Doors’ first outing, I detest this one. Where their debut was raw, wild, inventive, and fun to listen to, L.A. Woman drags; it’s bloated, self-indulgent, and at times an uninspired blues-rock cliché (especially Been Down So Long, Crawling King Snake, and The WASP). L’America, which follows after L.A. Woman, is an extraordinarily annoying song („Change the weather, change your luck / And then he’ll teach ya how to… find yourself” - ahem, wow). Of course, there is still quality songwriting: in the moody Cars Hiss By My Window, Morrison conjures up vivid images of estrangement, longing, and ennui. However, that a largely improvised, fragmentary track stands as one of the album’s strongest is telling. In other songs, Morrison’s songwriting craft has waned significantly (he actually sounds tried), which is a pity, because he was the one who elevated The Doors from a good band to a special one. It’s also unfortunate that the group weren’t able to meet the standard set by the opener The Changeling in the following tracks. I can understand why people judge the quality of L.A. Woman based on the strength of the title track and Riders on the Storm, but this overlooks the record’s filler-heavy reality. Their producer even went so far as to call parts of the recordings “cocktail music.” He wasn’t entirely wrong…
The Doors again, eh? I know they're super famous, but it's not for me. The album cover reminds me of a poison control sticker, which is apt. 'The Changeling' made me think they're like the musical equivalent of the show "Supernatural". 15 seasons of these brunette guys who look the same and do the same stuff every time? Really? I guess so. At least 'Love Her Madly' has an adverb in it. I know the song 'L.A. Woman' because of Billy Idol (who cut the length in half, thank goodness), but I don't really like either version, even though I like songs about places generally. Supposedly this was ranked the best song about LA. Wrong. Here are 5 that are better: 'Ænema' by Tool, 'California' by Rufus Wainwright, 'California Love' by 2Pac featuring Dr. Dre, 'Come Monday' by Jimmy Buffett, 'Drinking in L.A.' by Bran Van 3000. I do like that they sing "Mr. Mojo Risin'" because it's an anagram of "Jim Morrison". The Doors > JKR (but we're low in the rankings as it is). I assumed "L'America" meant "Lil America" because that's how I use L', but I turns out it's actually... Latin America. That's way worse. Overall, this album isn't bad, but I don't like it, so I'm going to give it a 2. Sorry for them that it didn't come 100 albums ago when I was still doing grade inflation!
Not the best Doors album by a long way. Title track rescues it.
Much blander than I expected after the album The Doors. More like Morrison Hotel. Cars Hiss by My Window was some really dull jazz/ blues.
I can't stand jim morrison but there are some groovy instrumentals on there, and they get at least half a star from riders on the storm. storm sfx still hold up weirdly.
I don’t like The Doors
There's some decent blues licks in here but the organ has no place in rock and Jim Morrison is pretty whatever. I don't really get the hype but maybe it was ahead of it's time.
The Doors are one of those bands that are easy to love when you’re young and want to feel like you understand things in a deep esoteric way. Then you get a little older and realize Jim Morrison was a drunken buffoon and organ led rock and roll is lame. That being said - LA Woman is a legit great song. Especially the part where Val Kilmer sings it while sitting on the John.
Tried to go in with an open mind. I've long considered The Doors to be one of the most over-rated bands in history. Not that they were particularly bad, just they weren't anywhere near as amazing as they seem to get credit for. For the most part, I can enjoy the musicians - Denzmore, Krieger and Manzarek - but Morrison was a college-level wanna-be poet at best. All of that being said, I did really enjoy the opening track, "The Changeling", a straight-up blued rocker. I've heard the three massive hits ("Love Her Madly", "Riders on the Storm" and "LA Woman" with it's cringe "Mister Mojo Rising" line) so many times I'm just bored with them. Most of the rest of side one was good. Side two, not so much. "L'America" is awful, "Hyacinth House" was meh. "Crawling King Snake" some of the worst lyrics so far. . . well, until "WASP" kicks in. Bottom line: Side one is descent, but "Love Her Madly" and "LA Woman" are over-played. Side two has so many cringe lyrics I barely got through it. "Riders On the Storm" is a good song, but again over-played.
Somehow the Doors are worse every time I hear them. I can barely get to two stars for Riders' genuine vibe. Jim Morrison is a jackass, and tho I rate Robby Krieger the band is replacement level. This is probably their best record.
The Doors annoy me. I think they’re overrated. Listening to this album made me realize that they would have been a good blues band. There are a few good tunes here. But the circus-organ sound kills the vibe for me whenever it arises. It’s a 2.
Dull. Lot of 12 bar blues
I hate the Doors. Riders on the storm is ok, the rest is just convoluted crap.
eh. kinda dragged on.
mola pero no es mi rollo
É um som que lembra muito Jimi Henrdix, mas sem a qualidade da voz e dos riffs/solos do Hendrix.
I think The Doors are simply not for me.
The Doors last full album with Jim Morrison. Very much a Doors album, very bluesy. I can't say I'm thrilled with anything here. Riders On The Storm is the closer. Favorite - LA Woman
Riders on the Storm is a great song and my favorite from the album. L'America was also pretty good. But overall, I don't love this album. I just don't think it's really my style/vibe.
This album is frustrating. With the songs LA Woman, Riders of the Storm, and L'américa, they clearly had some gas left in the tank to make another album. But they really wanted to do blues, and unfortunately their blues songs are flat and disappointing. This album doesn't really come together. If this is on the List, 'The Doors' definitely is. Since that album is much better, even with its own flaws, it's questionable why 'LA Woman' should be on here. It feels like the Doors get a pass on the meh blues songs because we love Riders. I can't do it.
Voice to text: This album is trash it really like emphasizes the fact that white people only like listening to black music outside of black bodies. It’s like the most like sanitized corny blues type album. I’ve heard and I don’t know why they did that. I don’t remember if this is post, Jim Morrison dying or Why I just do not like this album the only song album that’s worth listening to as riders on a storm that literally one song carries this entire album.
You don't hear guitar solos like this anymore. Easy to listen to but I got bored after a while
Woozy, ambling, scraggly and not in a good way. Very derivative blues music mostly with uninteresting psychedelic interjections from time to time. The only good track for me is Riders, The Wasp is ok. Very disappointed by this one. Hypest hype though. 2.2/5
Not an album I would return to but with the exception of a few slow songs not bad for background.
A couple of these songs are bangers — especially Love Her Madly — but it’s very uneven and some are drag to listen to. The better songs reminded me of a worse version of early Fleetwood Mac, so I’d rather listen to them.
Didn’t like this
Second Doors I get and I.... Don't care for it either sadly. I guess I just don't find their blues rock thing too interesting or Jim's voice all that, it's also missing the organ from the first record which made it stand out in my mind. So, eh
I’ve never been a huge Doors fan. I’m ok with a few of their songs……but that’s about it. I always felt the keyboards were a bit too much.
I always found The Doors to be overrated, but listenable. This isn’t tear my ears off bad, but wow it is so reductive. This is the twelfth album I’ve listened through this project and I’ve only heard one album by a black artist and at least three white bands blatantly using black music (in a far less effective way than their predecessors)
I was not high enough for this.
There's definitely good stuff here, but I could skip at least have of these so so blues songs.
this would definitely merit inclusion if the title of the book was "The Rise and Fall of The Doors." limp blues facsimiles with a jim morrison who sounds like he has an inordinate amount of phlegm stuck in his throat
Just boring. I didn’t ever need to listen to this. Ever.
Mundane 70s blues rock, it wasn’t even bad per se just nothing stood out in any regard. So I’m having a very difficult time finding even one song to add to my playlist from this. And I’m especially confused why the curator of this list felt the need to include this album as part of the 1001.
Iconic. Though not for me. Morrison put absolutely everything into this album and it shows. It’s weird and disorganized, but it has heart. Resonance - 6 Hooks - 4 Yield - 4 Technique - 6 Heart - 10 Mood - 5 RHYTHM - 35
Eh, didn't like it. Nothing notable, vocals were not my style.
This is far from the best doors album so I can only hope that the other doors albums are on this list somewhere. There are maybe three great songs here and a handful of filler.
I’ve never seen the appeal of The Doors. I still don’t even now. Their organ sound ages this music terribly.
It’s a real shame the band sounds as good as they do because nothing would save Jim Morrison from choking on his own ego. I actually like “L.A. Woman” and “L’America” actually works pretty well, but this is a real fuckin’ whimper from what could have been an amazing band.
Some songs I think are really interesting. However aside from the odd peak the majority of the album I found a very boring rhythm. Secondly it is clearly quite blues in nature which I like but it was the type of blues that just repeats in an annoying slow loop. I even heard some nick cave esk vocals but delivered in a flat and boring way. It has nothing on that!
this was the second Doors album in 5 days from this site. this one was leaps and bounds worse than the other. in the 4 years between them they traded away psychedelia for the blues and it just makes every song far less interesting
I don't know what it is about his voice, but something about it just turns me off. It's not bad, it just rubs me the wrong way. Most of the songs were ok. L.A. Woman and Riders On The Storm were pretty good. L'America was annoying and repetitive. Overall, it's just ok. Best song: Riders On The Storm
2.4 I don't get the Doors. And this list has taught me I never will. This one sounds like I've wandered into a random bar and some drunk guy is on stage trying to do the blues. Not for me Clive.
It contains that one song everyone knows, other than that, nothing remarkable.
I usually find the Doors pretty silly, but this was just mostly gross. Really did not enjoy this.
This is a classic this vs that. There are "doors people" and none doors people. I am a no thank you on the doors person. All the elements are cool sure. Jim, sure. The pianos, fun. But nah. Not for me.
recently I read some Joan Didion where she recounts an experience she had in the studio with the Doors where they all essentially sat around all bored waiting for Morrison to show up, and until now, that was my entire knowledge of them. And I feel with this album, as I do with many of the albums they give me that were considered groundbreaking and revolutionary in the 60/70s is that yeah, I can see how they were groundbreaking. I can! Does that make me listen and get on my knees and praise god these men met and made music? Not exactly. Like, it's fine. Morrison was really hot though, may he rest in peace.
The Doors are weird. They have a few good hits but otherwise it’s boring blues with mediocre poetry.
I don't think I like The Doors
and its exhausting the way you walk across the stage like a cage inside a cage chalkened rage twisted mind and passages miracles hysterical blues drops through the back steals back full circle
Boring
I’d rather listen to Elvis Costello. This is probably their best album which is kind of like saying liver cancer is better than child abuse. There’s a couple of decent songs. But unless you’ve never heard actual blues they’re not that great. Krieger is a good player. And Densmore is a good drummer. Neither good enough to redeem this from ok.
Yeah this didn't move me..... Riders on the Storm is cool tho
This made me sad to listen to
I just couldn’t really get into this one. 2 stars
Idk if I’ll be with the group on this one, but I wasn’t super impressed. The band and name are so iconic I would have expected more. Not bad by any means, but it didn’t stand out to me.
Ehhhh, it's just not really my kind of music.
Не понравилось.
I really don't like The Doors. Jim Morrison comes across as a right prick. Riders on the Storm is a banger but nothing else here is listenable.
One solid song, the title track -- everything works. But every other song is mediocre, and filled with Jim Morrison self-indulgence. Starting with "Changeling" set the tone, and the silly "L'America" song was the same -- repeating "change" or "L'America" doesn't do much for me. All in all, everyone just seems tired and done with being a rock band.
Starts off good, but loses it's way.
2.5
To me, this album has one great tune, Riders On The Storm, two good tunes, LA Woman and The WASP and the rest is filler. Not worthy of this list. I will admit , however, that this is one of my very favorite Morrisonisms: Out here on the perimeter there are no stars Out here we is stoned, immaculate - one of my favorite Doors lines. "The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom" seems to have been Jim Morrison's operating philosophy, but these late period Doors albums make me believe that the palace of wisdom isn't as much fun to listen to as may be to inhabit. After the disappointment of this album I went and listened to "When The Music's Over," the 10 minute beast at the end of "Strange Days." It was like night and day in terms of creative energy. Cancel my subscription to the resurrection! Yes, please!
I appreciate it, but this one’s not for me.
I used to hate the Doors (cannot remember why). Going in with an open mind and largely meh response. Enjoyed Riders on a storm - but large parts passed me by / annoyed me slightly. Some good bass /grooves but do not really care for Jim Morrisons vocals. A high 2.
Blues. Unremarkable. Only semi-highlight is Riders of the Storm
There’s the good Doors songs that become hits and then there’s the rambling blues stuff. This had too much of the latter
I don’t like this band and this album did not change that.
Not bad. Good bye Jim Morrison
I have never been able to get into The Doors and this album is no different. Not the worst thing I've ever listened to, but mediocre at best. 2/5
I thought I liked The Doors, but wasn’t feeling this album…
I think I might actually hate the Doors. The hits on this album - LA Woman, Riders on the Storm - are alright, but this album continues their monotony of bad bar music.
Vinyls getting longer happened at the wrong time because it meant that the Doors could finally make a near-hour record of sludge. He reuses the same melody over and over, the lyrics are stupid, and most obviously he has a horribly unpleasant voice. He somehow drains blues of its signature emotion and rhythm and turns it into a dull slog. Really horrible stuff. I think if one or two of those things from the aforementioned trifecta (bad melodies, bad lyrics, bad voice) were decent then this could be good, so it has potential. I imagine there are probably a lot of great and colorful covers of these songs so the band gets credit for building music with strong bones but unfortunately in its original recorded form, it just sounds like a bunch of guys experimenting with what they thought was really innovative instrumentation but ends up as a cacophony with a drunk guy screaming over it.
Jimbo can blow
only one good song
Wasn’t impressed by this album. It was cool to find out that The Doors sing Riders on the Storm. Never would have expected that. But the rest of it was just okay. Nothing here for me. Standouts: Love Her Madly and Riders on the Storm.
If you take the worst parts of the blues and joined it together with most boring parts of psychedelic rock, and have it be performed by the most boringly named band, with boring and uncreative album art, then you end up with this shit. What is the appeal here? White people who don't want to listen to real blues music? Whack ass overrated album.
Funny how this was a posthumous release because I was also looking for an early exit on this one. It was already feeling pretty slow but I wanted to tap out just a few songs in once he started yelping towards the end of Car Hiss by my Window.
More like L.AY down(for a nap) by the Snores
Riders on the Storm is the only reason this album is on the list. The rest is pretty bad
I recognize the Doors are a very influential band and I only saw some of that in this album. I think it was very instrumental but wasn’t strong enough in that area for me to be completely impressed. I definitely understand why this is an enjoyable album, however I didn’t love it.
Eh. 3rd Doors album is about 2.5 too many. I'm probably in the lower end of the demographic that *should* theoretically like The Doors, but Morrison's voice and Manzarek's lounge-keyboard have always rubbed me the wrong way. On this album you add those ingredients to mostly shitty bluesy songs ("Been Down So Long" is hideous) and you've got shit soup. "L'America" holycow you've got to make an effort to put out a song as bad as that one. HOWEVER! Some positive notes -> saving this album are two songs I actually like: the title track comes just in time at track 5 - it works despite Morrison's ... meta-Morrison thing. This song takes you on a ride so much more than nearly anything else they ever did. Best though is the final cut - it's hard to argue with "Riders On The Storm" though - that's a great mood piece. TL;DR: Take those 2 songs and kill the rest quickly. 5/10 2 stars.
I’m sure it’s critically good, but feels a bit samey. Enjoyable, but drags on for me.
Eh, white boy blues. Nothing new here. Nothing to say.
A few good classic tracks & the rest is just blues filler with an annoying organ.
I hate California
maybe a 1.5. Reading nick's review beforehand really elevated this. Bro went from hot ass to mid with riders on the storm (more like 'please end!!')
Got bored. Probably just didn't grow up hearing these bit of it were new today it wouldn't register with me
Like the acidy, laid back feeling of a number of the song, but it's nothing exiting. Passes by easily, but stays passed by. Best song: L'America Worst Song: The Changeling
It was better than Morrison Hotel, but it's still boring and repetetive. The vocalist seems drowzy and so tired at times I can smell the alcohol breath from afar. I read about how people admire his introspection, but I seriously doubt he knows what he's talking about half the time. Best song: Riders on the Storm Worst song: Cars Hiss by My Window
Oh my god The Doors are so painfully BORING. Why did so many 60s groups feel the need to bang directionless on an organ for 4 minutes in a 7 minute song? And Jim Morrison just sat there tunelessly "singing" for the whole fucking album. I was almost tempted to give this a 1 just because of how highly rated this utter dog shit was, but it's still not as bad as bjork
I don't think it aged that well. With so much variety and soundscapes and production these days, it seemed flat.
Old school rock
I don't know what but something is missing. It just seems like what all the rock bands were doing at the time. It's ok to listen to but there's just not a lot that makes it stand out from the others. I think I might need another listen. Highlights: Hyacinth House
This morning I said “I like the Doors”. I realize now I meant “I like the EARLY Doors”. I admit I like Riders on the Storm but note how different it is from the rest of the album.
It’s fine. Familiar with part of it by listening to the radio for decades. Just isn’t my bag, frankly.
I wanted this to be the moment that I get the Doors. It is not. It's a good band entirely given over to the rampant egomania of a singer who isn't talented enough to make it worthwhile. Like Oasis, which I'm sure Doors fans will be delighted with.
Not my type of music. Probably wouldn’t listen to this. Can understand the style and genre of music though
I have a confession to make. I really don’t like The Doors. I don’t know what it is, but outside of a few songs, I sorta can’t stand them. Maybe it’s Jim Morrison’s voice or the fact that the hits on this album are 7-8 minutes that end up on the radio and linger for 40% of my car-riding experience. It’s weird, they just piss me off. My dad likes The Doors, but my mom doesn’t, so I guess I picked up my apathy for The Doors from her, along with Tom Petty. This album doesn’t change my perspective much. As mentioned, I don’t like either of the 7-minute songs (L.A. Woman or Riders on the Storm) and the deep cuts don’t do much to change my mind. There are a few things that stop this from being a 1-star, mainly because I’m not that insane, but I can’t say I found this enjoyable. If there are more Doors albums on this venture (and I’m 99% sure there will be, ugh), I hope at least one will be at least decent to me. But this is my trash opinion and I’ll stick with it. Favorite track I guess: Hyacinth House (it was nice and short, I actually kinda liked it.) Other hits: The Changeling, The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)
Not a great fan of The Doors. Thought a lot of their music meandered a lot and drug fuelled. However they produced two really fantastic songs Riders Of The Storm (on this album) and Light My Fire on previous album which has one of the best organ arrangements ever. LA Woman is deserving of being on this list as The Doors and Jim Morrison in particular left an enduring mark on pop and rock music. Not a favourite of mine but is redeemed with the inclusion of Riders. 2/5 20/8/24
The Doors are the most overrated band of the 20th century. Prove me wrong
Good but the Doors were burned out at this point. IMO
Along with several terrific tracks, there's some very creative and original bits, some junky filler, and what seems like Morrison trying to be a blues singer. So, a very mixed bag.
as someone said they sound like they just stole a bunch of black people's music
Fine
No lyrics
Bluesy and rock and roll for sure.
I lost all my listening notes! Booo But thought this was alright - a long album, not really what I'd usually listen to
more like the snores
Never listened to the doors much. Not too impressed by this album. I guess I often find blues boring, repetitive
Some tracks okay, like the vocals. Not a great blues fan
Meh.
It was fine. Just typical 70s rock.
For me…always overrated
pretty chill listening, it was alright - not my favorite album ever.
Tighter and angrier than I expected. The blues stuff is good, the more histrionic moments let this album down.
6/2/24 listened to on barefoot morning run. the doors aren’t terrible but just haven’t seemed to be my cup of tea. standouts of this album is at the very end “oh this is the album with riders on the storm” i’ll give it a 5/10
Mostly not my thing, sometimes a little my thing, “huh, that word by this band makes me uncomfortably”. Favourite track: L'America.
I’m not a rock girly at all. Maybe if it was 80s, I’d have more interest but not really feeling it.
What a drunken mess. Half of this album sounds like people who could perform in a different situation all putting something down because they're meant to. Riders on the Storm has a good vibe.
At times this sounds like a drunk white guy making fun of the Blues. The instrumentation is fine. Production is fine for what it's working with.
In the words of Ulysses Everett McGill, “I don't get it Big Dan.” The only thing I found interesting is that the lead vocals in a couple songs sounded almost gothic, not matching the tone of the instrumentation. Kudos to those who like it, but this album isn't for me.
I like The Doors but tbh they really just make me want to listen to the blues
Insgesamt zu melancholisch und psychedelisch. Gut, Riders in the Storm ist natürlich nicht zu toppen.
white ppl cosplay as black ppl and flop miserably
Not my type of thing. Obviously I know Riders on the Storm which is ok (possibly because of familiarity?) but the rest just sounded / felt like 'music to get stoned to' which isn't what I do so it's a "no" from me...
Outside "Riders on the Storm" nothing really stands out for me.
Call me crazy, but I don’t think the local bar band should’ve let the barfly sing with them while he’s actively blacking out. At least they’re a tolerable bar band, even though, based on their blues-heavy riffing, I know the other patrons would try to hate crime me if I tried to get myself my usual fruity little drink.
Liked Riders on the Storm. Otherwise didn't care for this. Reading Wikipedia about the group, didn't realise Jim Morrison died so young.
The Doors have never clicked with me. This type of repetitive blues rock bores me, and Morrison's voice is not my thing. Too much noodling on the organ.
3/10 Not for me this one, a combination of 2 things that I don’t like: bluesy rock and self-serious prevention Marked it up slightly because a lot of the music was pretty good, if often generic, boring, and maybe too long Not much of a fan of the vocals or lyrics Rolled my eyes more than once Best: Hyacinth House
The 2 singles (LA Woman, Riders of the Storm) are great. Otherwise, a lot of wank. The Doors Greatest Hits is the only Doors one needs.
These guys took everything I don't like about rock and blues and put them into one album. The songs are slow and repetitive, and sort of predictable. Riders on the Storm is a decent song.
It was ok
They had some good songs, even a couple great ones. But basically they were a psychedelic Holiday Inn lounge combo fronted by a drunken imbecile.
I was tortured by this album being overplayed and turned up as loud as possible. It made me hate the Doors. It still isn't something I would ever select to hear.
partito col botto poi mi sono persa
non l'ho ascoltato tutto ma Love Her Madly e L.A. Woman carine :)
Pretentious
Ugh I hate The Doors. Something about Jim Morrison’s arrogance and ridiculousness that make him seem like a living parody of a rock star is just so off putting to me. And I hate all that psychedelic noodling they do. But I respect their place in rock history.
I did not enjoy this. If I never have to listen to late 60s/early 70s blues rock again, it will be too soon.
I hate Morrison 's voice so much. Some of this might be bearable with a different vocalist. Riders on the Storm is a pretty good vibe, especially the instrumental bits and saves this album from a 1.
Riders on the storm is great, the rest of the album would be better as aminstrumental.
Overly familiar songs that I've heard a bit too much over the years in pubs etc. Still quality in parts though.
Spoke too soon ... another Doors album. As previously mentioned, just not a huge fan of the Lizard King ... but I can get down with "L.A. Woman." Great tune.
not rly into it
“MR MOJO RISIN” is an anagram for “Jim Morrison”. Poetic genius Jim Morrison came up with that in the days before the internet made it possible for narcissistic nerds to view every possible anagram of their names in seconds. This dork had to sit down with a pen and paper to work that shit out. There is some inoffensive blues rock on this album, but nothing that makes wading through the ocean of pretension that is The Doors worthwhile. Oliver Stone should have to pay reparations to anyone who sat through that awful movie, and anyone who thinks Jim Morrison wouldn’t be a Trump supporting Q-Anon podcaster if he was still alive is kidding themselves. - RIFLE WAILS, MD
It was fun to listen to, but I find it not to be my thing. I wouldn't mind it as bg music, but it's not my first choice for either activities I listen to music for
Can't say I really loved this one. I'm not a huge fan of blues-ey music and I had a difficult time feeling connected to the music. I didn't like it for two main reasons: it was often repetitive without being catchy, and it didn't evoke any emotion, which are criteria that can often make or break my enjoyment of a piece of music. It wasn't a terrible album, just pretty average the whole way through, and there weren't really any standout songs to me even after listening through a couple times. I can understand if people love the album but it didn't do it for me. Favourite song was Love Her Madly. Maybe in the future I'll revisit, but for now this is unfortunately my first 2, not my cup of tea
Nah. JM’s voice is cheesy. The organ is over used. No interest.
I kinda get it but not for me
I didn’t like it at all the first time, second time I kinda got down to it!
Half paying attention this album isn't offensively bad, but when I listened again without distractions I could barely make it through. It was awful bar-band blues rock noodling with high school poetry.
Good Blues album. Jim Morrison is self-admittedly not a musician, and it unfortunately shows in this album since it's all live. Nothing groundbreaking or interesting
Kind of got bored, music that's very easy to zone out to, but not in a good way.
Not one, but 2 Doors albums on this list?? PASS.
I hated parts of this and loved other parts. Great sounds in general, though
not really my taste
Would like to give it 2.5
5/10 Highlights: Love Her Madly
Just doesn't do anything for me. Jim Morrison's voice is aggressive, and the music is dull.
Not my style of music. Pretty typical 70s rock. Found learning about Jim Morrison and the lore around the band interesting but I really did not enjoy the album.
i only listened to a couple songs, did not stick in my head
Like Grateful Dead but bad. I couldn’t give a two rat’s ass.
Okay
Good guitar and drums, but large parts where the songs are directionless.
I can understand why the Doors are influential, but I feel like a lot of the bands influenced by the Doors did this style of music better than the Doors.
Yawn
One of the most overrated bands in rock music, and one that I have tried repeatedly over the years to get into, but the music and lyrics always falls well short of the mark of music that does ANYTHING for me. This album was no exception.
For some reason I really expected more of this.
Classic but not that into it anymore
i appreciate it but not for me
This album encapsulates my relationship with The Doors. They have such fun musical ideas that I really enjoy but then sit on then without really going anywhere. Combine that with Jim Morrison's inconsistency, going from really velvety blues tones to having his larynx attacked by a saw you've got one album that just misses the mark for me. Don't get me wrong there's a few extremely solid songs on the album but the lows are too low for me to be a fan of the album overall
Still not a fan
riders on the storm is one of the singles ever but it’s just bait for the rest of the tagged on tracks that aren’t near as punchy. disappointed, i was really looking forward to this album
might run back into something when in the mood but not very memorable for me
Is it just me, or is the title track a blatant rip-off of Johnny B. Goode and Mona? A bastard love child if you will? The rest of the songs are decent. 🌪🌪
I personally am not a giant classic rock kind of guy, but I did enjoy putting this album on softly in the back and tapping my foot to the rhythms. 2/5
Mellow, lots more going on than I was expecting. Same vibe throughout. Favourite song: L.A. Woman. Least Favourite: Hyacinth House.
Overall 5/10 but I guess this is a very personal review reflective of my intricate perspective. Just missing even a little X factor for me in a lot of the songs and venturing a lil towards blues which I don’t really care for as a genre. Can see ppl who would enjoy it and there are still some killer solos in there and some good songs such as The Changeling which has really good instrument choice,. But I feel these songs are strictly just songs I’d like to play on guitar not to listen on a day to day basis.
Jim Morrison's voice is just very cool, isn't it? That really carries this album, which isn't particularly interesting musically or lyrically in the most part. Not much worth revisiting other than Riders on the Storm, 2/5.
Kinda boring ngl
Confirms The Doors are not my cuppa.
I don't know with this one. The band is incredibly tight. LA Woman and Riders on the Storm are incredible hits and I really liked L'America. Jim Morrison is a goddamn mess though. I wanted the drunk uncle to shut up and let someone else do their impression of a blues singer instead. Who cares if we lose a few clever lines that Uncle Pretense managed to squeak out of his addled mind? I could do without the shouting and mumbling. Seriously, I was born almost twenty years after the man died so I'll never know the culture but from everything I've learned Morrison wasn't counter cultural, he was just an alcoholic dickbag who threw a tantrum when he was told what to do. I don't care how "intelligent" he was. The end result was a pretentious douche who drank himself to death at 27. That shows on this album. Love her Madly sounds like the vocals were recorded in another room. Changeling is a mumbling mess. I'm looking forward to when their earlier albums show up (and try to find the time to listen to them before then even). The Doors launched so much music that I love. I just can't get past Jim on this album...
En dehors de Raiders on the Storm, c'était vraiment pas fou.
I’ve written and deleted about nine thoughts. I don’t like these songs. They’re feathers, no weight behind them. When they do really crank up the feeling, it’s grating. I don’t ever want to hear Jim Morrison do his Louis Armstrong voice again.
Vocals sound like a random dude singing…spanning many different styles. Jim Morrison was a wild dude and I guess this was the intro of many genres to come. Best song Hyacinth House. Loved the organ music. Very Greg’s dads house.
Quite boring. Wouldn’t listen again
I felt neutral about The Doors going into this album. Now I think I don't like them much. This specific brand of boomer blues rock just isn't for me. I can't see myself ever giving this album a listen ever again. The one song that doesn't come across as cheesy is Riders on the Storm. Even still, lyrics like "his brain is squirmin' like a toad" are just goofy. The Doors are goofy.
Way too much blues. Two stars for being Clapton-adjacent. The songs are unpleasant and don't build on the unique sound that the Doors established on the five previous records.
Been Down So Long is a great song and Riders on the Storm is a classic, but the rest of this album is an annoying mess
