Reviews (page 13 of 13)

pretty boring. typical beach boys or monkees style shit.

Not a big fan of this. It was decent, and I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio, but I would turn it down.

Boooriiing. Not my thing. Not p.delic type. Score 2 ´cause of ´This will be our year´ and ´Time of the season´. Dunno... they could stick developing songs like Road Runner and Sticks and Stones (first album). And decide btw CCR or The Beach Boys...

Nice pop songs, a bit like the beach boys and sometimes also the Beatles. Ok for one listening turn, but it is too common and already heard a lot, a bit thirteen in a dozen, so it s gonna annoy me fast.

Best Song: Care of Cell 44. A nice and bubbly start to the album. Worst Song: This Will Be Our Year. Sounds like a song sung by highschool freshman at a school assembly to kick off the new year. Overall: Competent but largely annoying early rock. The Golden Retriever Energy starts to become unpalatable by the second half of the already short album. Far surpassed by all of their contemporaries.

Not for me.

Started off really bad, but picked up towards the latter half, and finished on their one big hit, so this is certainly one that requires some patience. I give it two blunts out of five. 🚬🚬

tracks on this album are either good or shit for me. (at first lost on me) disliked weak voices and British fragile crappy sounding instrumentation - hurts me, like listening to Andrew Lloyd Weber with the vacuum turned on, while someone's mum sings along doing housework. I wanted to shut off the music and walk away!... So, I skipped through the 2nd half of each track .. Then "time of the Season" hit a note and the album completely shifted to something else completely with some synth organ and hitting their stride " she's not there " was on the 40th anniversary version of the album.. but wait. That's a bonus from another album. Still shitm . Only 2.5 stars.

Damn hippies. I really want to like this. I want it to touch a foundational part of me so I can take joy in groovyness. I smoked pot before listening and everything. I am unfortunately forming the opinion that old hippy music sucks.

shitty beatles

A whole extra point added to this score because of how good two songs are. Time of the Season is an all-time vibe song, and Butchers Tale really surprised me. Overall, a tepid album that should’ve been lost to the ages without TotS

One big meh

There’s one good song on this record which is Time Of The Season, and then there’s the rest of the album. Didn’t age well. Has one classic tune, 2/5.

Poor and dull was like being stuck on a long drive with no real purpose but no adventure.

Nearly redeemed by Time Of The Season, but it is not ticking my boxes.

Zombies are scary so I didn’t listen to it

The first thing that came to my mind was I've heard a few of these songs before, This will be our year and Time of the season. Both were good and I liked. Thought the first song Care of Cell 44 was best song off the album. Rest of the album didn't do much for me, but I didn't find it to be annoying. My biggest statement is for the song A Rose for Emily. Thought the song was OK, but I immediately though of Emily H, a family friend we love like our own daughter. After the Zombie album, the very first first song it kicked into was by Velvet Underground, a band she loves. And then the first song I heard on the drive home from work last night was a song called Island Boy by Kenny Chesney. In that song, there is 2 lines that always make me think of Emily and Aaron. "You know the love of his life has always been Emily. She loves the man she sees." So shout out to Emily H. Apparently the music Gods wanted to think about you yesterday. Wishing you and Aaron nothing but love and happiness in your life. And that is one of thousands of reasons I love music. For the times and memories they trigger! The album was OK. Just OK. 2 for the album. Bonus .5 for thoughts of family friends! 2.5

Beatles tyyppistä rockia. Ei tarjonnut kuitenkaan mitään erikoisempaa. Viimeinen kappalw hyvä

It's easy to see how this was ignored until Time of the Season became a hit. The rest of the album is instantly forgettable folk rock. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Time of the Season Date listened: 12/01/23

Her peppermint smile and autumn eyes with flowers in her hair buttoned up for the frisky air. Um, no thanks. I think this album shows the bias of having all English reviewers. Truly. It's predictable and doesn't do much for me except being okay background music.

"Time of the Season" was a surprise hit? It is far and away the best song on "Odessey(sic) And Oracle," with the rest being mostly cringey overly saccharine flower child wanderings. But perhaps most troubling is that the choice of the name The Zombies doesn't fit at all with the music. Except when the music just moves too slow and you want to chop their heads off to put an end to it. Apparently their original short-lived bassist came up with the name, and the other members barely knew what zombies were. While zombies were introduced into popular culture along with other monster movies in the 1930s with "White Zombie," it wasn't until 1968's "Night of the Living Dead" that they became a pop culture mainstay. So why name your group of Beatles wanna-bes The Zombies in 1961? Regardless, by the time 1968 rolled around, these young Brits did indeed become akin to a reawakened corpse with an insatiable appetite for some of the most boring pyschedelic rock ever produced. Only "Time of the Season," an absolutely terrific song, saves the rest of the decaying dreck from the dreaded single star.

Was it an artistic choice to have this album sound muffled? Or a limitation of the recording equipment?

So soft and non-violent but also oh so boring. Extrapoints for „This will be our year“ & amazing „Time of the Season“

Старо

Sounds like a mix of the Monkees, The Beach Boys, and Pink Floyd. Not my cup of tea, but cool and unpredictable chord progressions in most tunes that kept my attention, sort of.

don't sounds

One great song, rest is a bit meh

top tracks: butchers tale, this will be our year, changes

The sound is nice, the vocals clear. The vibe: 60s. It's OK to listen to once.

A pretty decent, but not extraordinary, psych-rock-pop album from an era absolutely saturated with such works. Capable but formulaic.

2.5/5 chill

Spiralling psychedelia. Leveaned by the same mix of delicacy and clarity Ray Davies made his metier and deflated by the airy gentrified vocals Donnovan made his. Unclear what any of these songs are aiming for.

Its aight

10 songs to warm up for Time of the Season. What a banger that is, the rest a bit forgetful.

brutto, noioso, forse avanti per il tempo ma non mi ha entusiasmata

2.5/5 Best song: Time of the Season

honestly not my jam

not my favorite

More late 60s garbage. 2/5.

No more listens.

Not for me

Started out good but lost interest.

I had high hopes for this one, but found it to be pretty saccharine overall. Not something I need to hear again.

Sounds similar to other groups of the time. Time of the Season is the only song I think I've heard before. It's not bad, but just bland.

good. kind of psychedelic, but not quite there for me. nice vocals though.

50 years too late

Pretty boring, with the exception of the [famous] final track

4 A good mix of upbeat but also living up to the name Zombies.

Jolly Calm Nice

Time of the Season is, obviously, a complete and total classic, but the rest of this one was pretty forgetable.

OK - Time of the Season is a great song. The album might improve if I listened to it more.

a period piece

Dat was wel erg zoetsappig. Geen idee waarom ze zich The Zombies noemen..

Een beetje braindead word je inderdaad wel van The Zombies, behalve bij hun hitje die ze als toetje bewaren.

Graag iets met meer pit!

Too like the Beatles

Meh, mostly bland pop rock. Wasn’t bad to listen to but uneventful and not necessarily the best representation of that era’s pop rock

Time of the Season is an amazing track, but aside from that this album didn't engage me. It struck me an attempt to reproduce the magic of Pet Sounds but it fell short of the mark.

Good songs but I listened on headphones and the stereo effect gives me headaches on about 3 songs. Would rate a lot higher if the stereo wasn't present as the highs on this album are very high.

Really low key album. Too low key for my taste I think. "Time of the Season" is a great song though.

03/06/2021 - Ricardo esteve aqui.

I did not particularly enjoy this one. It was ok. Sounded a lot like the Beatles. A Rose for Emily was just very sad and Maybe After He's Gone was pathetic. Beechwood Park was probably the high point for me.

Boring first half but decent second half. Won't be revisiting

Meh. Meh. Enkel Time of the Season is een geweldige klassieker. Steekt ook hard af met de andere nummers.

Mij toch door dit album moeten worstelen. Klinkt wel zoals de hoes doet vermoeden.

Nice enough tunes, but never really been a band I’ve felt like exploring that much in the past. Don’t think this album will change that.

Thoughts on this, in order, as I'm listening to it... Sounds a bit like Beach Boys. Actually this band is kinda irritating. Oh Paul Weller likes them. This song sounds like it's from medieval times. Oh I know this song. 5/10

Not a fan.

Beatles meet beach boys. To quote The Mighty Boosh- “Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.” Pleasant, not life changing

This was ok. A lot of same same but ok as background noise.

Very 60's. Favorites were This Will Be Our Year and Time of the Season

Time and place for this. Not 10am on a Tuesday

Below average for me. Only a couple of great songs. _This Will Be Our Year_ and _Time of the Season_ being the two best

It was fine. Could have done without the minstrel music.

One good song...

Ok but I’d categorize it as music for boring hippies

Entuudestaan tuttu, levyn vika biisi asetti odotukset tosi korkeelle, mut ei kohdannut.

thought the music would be more interesting because of the cover but alas... i was disappointed. another album where i wonder why it was on this list. i like the dave matthew's cover "time of the season" better! 2.5

dull hippy shit

Not my thing

bruh ass bruh shit, some beetles shit bruh on bruh

yah this is not giving. very sad despite being colorful. emo b4 singing gay n lady like was ok. imo

no 🥹 just no

No me gusto nada, ningun tema, la primer mala recomendacion. Una cancion con 300 millones y es malisima, que album choto.

I thought it going to be something like Pink Floyd or the Beatles but it was both, and it was an awful mix. 1.5/5

too much 60s psychedelia.

unsure why this album generator keeps trying to shove the same mediocre 60s 70s music down our throats…

This is cloying and twee. I don't know how they were able to write Time of the Season, an anomaly to end all anomalies. The song is sexy with a memorable groove and vocal patterns. A bonafide classic. But it isn't enough to wipe out the weak psychedelic pop rock of the rest of the album.

Only heard of Time of the Season, the rest was quite forgettable

One hit wonders. More sixties music with nothing to say.

Brutal

2/10 Fav: Time of the Season, Beechwood Park

I won't listen to this one again. Not my thing.

The closer off this album absolutely slaps. Tasty tune that I've heard a million times. The rest of this felt like I was listening to a compilation called The Absolute Worst of The Kinks. No thanks.

groovy 60s pop. Reminds me of the Beatles and Beach Boys. Popular song: Time of the Season

Boring except for the last song.

Songs all kinda sound the same except time of the season idk, not a winner for me.

boring yeah real not great

The fuck is this shit?

Not for me. 1/5

Every band that sounds like this sounds like the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys are the best of the bands that sound like the Beach Boys. I do not particularly like the Beach Boys.

Generic and dull didn't care that much for them, gotta admit the background story is pretty amusing

It bored me.

Alright, Jen, the 1001 randomizer machine heard your peace and love request and served up this peach of an album. For most of the songs, I kept waiting for a jarring voice to interrupt mid-track and say, “all of our agents are busy right now, but your call is important to us. Please stay on the line and your call will be answered by the next available agent.” Yes, this is just on-hold music, if it was more progressive and had a lead singer. Exhibit B in what is becoming a true question for me with this list: Do we have albums like this because everyone was on drugs in the 60s … or was everyone on drugs in the 60s because we have albums like this?

Känns som att det borde vara bra men jag är bara uttråkad

One great song, two ok songs and the remainder just sort of drivel.

A slog

This sucked booooooo

Unremarkable

Seasons of Change is a classic from the late 60s; the rest of the album is not as great or doesn't translate to someone born in 1971.

Oh dear. I like a bit of psychedelia, and love 'She's Not There', but this is all a bit twee. A product of its time.

I can see how this was new / interesting in 1968, but I don't understand how anyone born after that era can find this genuinely listenable. I feel the same way about all bands from that time, including The Beatles. If my life was a movie with subtitles and I was listening to this, a phrase "60s music playing" would appear.

Too old fo my taste

Not my style, I only liked “Care of Cell 44” and “Hung Up on a Dream”

The Zombies… should have stayed dead. This is absolute crap, amateur hour.

Old stuff, boring.

not great, beatles vibes but otherwise mid. best song is Care of Cell 44

1. cell 44 - 1 2. roze - 1 3. gone - 1.5 4. park - 1 5. candlez - 1 6. dream - 0 7. changez - 0 8. me - 0 9. year - 1 10. butcherz - 0 11. friendz - 0 12. zeazon - 1.5

I hate this dainty 60s English folk music… I don’t get it. It makes me angry and I don’t enjoy it. I suppose it’s meant to paint an idyllic image of England… I don’t get it. I see why people do, and my brother, who I am sharing this musical journey with, will likely rate this highly. But it’s not for me. Sorry. Objectively good music, subjectively not my thing. Maybe I’m too sober for it?

Meh.. Track 8 I want her, She wants me.. reminds of My Life by Billy Joel

Not for me.

okay-ish

Meh. Maybe it was interesting in its own time. I didn’t enjoy it.

I really didn't care for this album, maybe it's just not the day for it.

this is like the platonic ideal of 60s rock. right down the middle. and i do not enjoy it.

Die 60' finde ich halt immer etwas schwierig. Auch hier ist es mir zu chorig und psychadelisch.

The only song I liked on the album is Time of the Season.

forgettable

Not my kind of music

I just can't get into this style of music. That bouncy pop piano stuff.

Not a fan of hippie music at all

Rubbish

This doesn't even make my top 1000 albums of 1968

More than a hint of Pet Sounds in the vocal arrangements, that said I'm a big Colin Blunstone fan, love his voice and his solo work in particular. In so many ways wholly derivative of a range of other albums at the time, plaintive, "English", rustic and well "lovely". Lots of images of young women blooming (they all seemed to love Emily, who was Emily she must have been the Claudia Karvan of her day, big call I know...). It's all somehow so twee, so fey, a bit too much weed and not enough acid? I mean...ahem...a lilting flute line to open Changes? It's like an Austin Powers pisstake... yeah baby... Ok Time of the Season, superb, though I'd strongly suggest heavily influenced by the Spencer Davis Group (I'm a Man intro...). Sounds nothing like the rest of the record as it is a fine piece of songwriting, which Rod could not sustain.

Ihan meni kuunnellessa ohi, enkä millään viitsinyt kuunnella uusiksi. Sen verran 60-luku.

Vahvistaa päätöstäni olla ikinä kokeilematta psykedeelejä. Mikä olisi mielikuvituksettomampaa?

Boring fr

I don't like this style.

I had heard "Time Of The Season" quite a few times before, but none of the other songs. "Time Of The Season" is okay; not on my list of favorite songs from that era, though I've always liked the melody. I don't particularly care for any of them.

Poor mans beatles/beach boys

Felt like a discount Beatles.

Not my cup of tea. Too much hippy.

awful!
