This was nice and chill for a cool Friday morning
Strong 4
Beautiful. I still think I prefer his first one but I definitely preferred this to pink moon
Really good instrumentals, I usually can't listen to intrumental only songs but the ones on this album are amazing. I also love how calm the album is it reminds me of the beetles
c'est pas mon style mais c'est beau quand même, le son du même nom a une petite vibe zelda
I've being stuck listening to this record for the past week. At first I though it was a very decent and great singer-songwriter album. However, the past Tuesday I decided to listen to it while driving at evening, and it was at that moment when the magic of this album showed up, and I've being in love with it ever since. This record sounds like a cozy and cold autumn afternoon, and I think the primarily element which makes it so charming is the subtle and quiet voice, with the incredibly use of string arrangements and folk melodies coming right after it. In general, I would describe the sound of this album as very positive and sincere, which can be kind of surprising considering that this man tragically died of an antidepressant overdose. The project may not sound incredibly happy, but I don't think anyone would believe that the author suffered from depression right after listening to it, or maybe I'm missing some really hidden messages and clues in the lyrics, which may be the case since I often struggle interpreting them. Another remarkable aspect is how incredibly detailed it is , with some very interesting elements here and there: There are three instrumental tracks: "Introduction", "Bryter Layter" and "Sunday. The first one is a very charm and welcoming piece and the last two feature a wonderful flute that replaces the voice, and I think it is a smart decision, as both have a very subtle sound. The second track, "Haze Jane II", introduces the voice and it is full of life and little uplifting crescendos. The next song is "At the Chime of A City Clock", and like "Poor Boy", one of the latter tracks, they include a saxophone that gives them a kind of jazzy feeling and blends incredibly well. The forth piece, "One of These Things First", has a very playful piano and "Hazey Jane I" has a quite skillful guitar playing. In the track "Fly" they use a harpsichord to create a more baroque oriented track. Finally, the last song to be mentioned, "Northern Sky", has some incredibly wonderful celeste (a instrument I've just learnt exists) and a organ that create a very wonderful and captivating atmosphere. In the end, this is an incredibly beautiful and warm experience. I don't think is perfect, but maybe with time my love it grows enough to give it such a score. Before ending, I must mention that the first time I heard about this artist was when trough Boris' "Akuma Uta", as the photo used in the artwork of that album was inspired by this record. They sound incredibly different though.
nice, but very background music
Have only heard the odd song or single by Nick Drake. Was impressed with this and surprised a bit by some of the great musical performance by the band
feels like field day where a lot of freedom and butterfly. the Guitar songs mostly. I like the addition of a pipe.
Estaba ansiosa antes de ir a trabajar y me calmó
I love Nick Drake. For some reason I had never heard of him until a couple years ago, but I was an instant fan when I did. Northern Sky and Hazy Jane I are my favorites from this album.
8,5/10
Lovely mellow album
I've read enough about Drake over the years to have come into this with some idea about how it would sound, but my expectations were only somewhat true. This ended up feeling a lot more meditative and whimsical than I expected; I admit that the lyrics floated right by me for the most part, but the richness and fun in the melodies and arrangements here don't at all convey the icy pessimism that a lot of writing about Drake does. This one's beautiful and peaceful! I enjoyed Drake's acoustic work throughout the record, but I think "Hazey Jane 1" is my favorite.
Viva el folk. Muy hermoso. Geese.
Wondered during the first half if I haven’t massively underrated this for years. In many ways, it uses a full band better than Five Leaves Left, with Hazey Jane II being particularly stirring. The instrumentals are what holds this back, especially Sunday, which features very shrill flute
4.3/5 nick drake melancholy
Good songs with a very good guitarist, complimented well by backing musicians
it's deeply ingrained in my head, the quote from his publicist, about how his music didn't sold, but someday someone will realize how great it was. and it feels exactly that, how specific of a person must you be to like what he does. It's so dark and moody, in a nighttime way, that's difficult to recommend. But, when you get it, it's like nothing else. This album in particular, surprised as it was more than him singing and playing guitar. has some other decisions musically, that i liked.
This is so calm and soothing that it isn't jibing with my work panic and high caffeine intake today.
He's one of the greatest folk music's singer and composer
Just goes down like maple syrup Faves: Northern Sky, Introduction, Hazey Jane I
Nick Drake is great! What a cool album. His super mellow voice is somehow sad and happy at the same time. Some awesome strings, woodwind and guitar instrumentals. Really enjoyed this. Especially ‘At the Chime of a City Clock,’ as I listened to this album whilst on a run around the old town of Chiang Mai, Thailand.
first album here<3 already falling in love with it
Thought this was a beautiful album. I really enjoyed it. I liked the style of his singing, I liked the instrumentation. Just a really nice listen. Fav song: One Of These Things First Least fav: Bryter Layter
I love his voice, lyrics and guitar so much. I also (somewhat surprisingly) really enjoyed the instrumentals. I've only heard Pink Moon before and in comparison there's definitely some unnecessary extra production to Bryter Layter (although admittedly some of it is done gorgeously). It's a bit heartbreaking to hear a man who died at 26 singing "a whole long lifetime could have been the end". Favourite song: One of These Things First Least: Poor Boy
It may have been the mood I was in but it felt melancholy in places and with wistful nostalgia and daydreaming.
Rich production, good songs. Curious choice of instrumentals but not unpleasant.
The more I listen to Nick Drake, the further I move away from the received wisdom that he was a dark and miserable songwriter. All three of his albums prove this to be absolute nonsense. His brooding, melancholy turns are usually counterbalanced by bright and hopeful ones - often within the same song. What makes him fascinating as a writer is how he switches from minor to major, hitting a sweet spot between being downbeat and uplifting. Also against received wisdom, and Nick Drake’s own preferences, I am glad that delightful and eccentric chamber instrumentation was added to Bryter Layter because it creates a stark contrast between each of his three LPs. None of his albums is like another. His lyrics are often whimsical and soaring, so to match that vibe with orchestration is genius to my ears. The only time this falters is the title track and closing track where Drake’s simple instrumental, which doesn’t do much on its own, is simply drowned out and distracted from. This album was on regular rotation in my household growing up, so will always be the Nick Drake record I am most familiar with. It holds a special place in my heart.
Compared to his 3rd album which I heard on this site before, various instruments have been added, making the arrangement slightly more elaborate, but it sounded like his characteristic touch wasn't fully brought out. While I personally like this kind of smooth pop, I don't really look for it in albums that are touted as masterpieces.
Cozy
That damn flute made me ascend
4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/nick-drake/bryter-layter/ Contrary to popular opinion, I think I like this more than Nick Drake's debut album, which I found a bit too much orchestra. Here, the strings are also very present, but bother me less.
good, but again not sustained enough to be above a 4
Actually really good. Sounds very ahead of its time.
i really like the first song. this guys pretty good, he's a bit wordy though. i like his voice. Alot of horns and strings in this album so far and really like that. Ohhhh i really like the snare one the fourth song :] very beautiful . great album so far, it sounds very beautiful and tranquil like a garden. ngl i cant get over how beautiful his voice is. i LOVE the background vocals. very jazz this album is. saxaphone player going crazy. All in all this was a very beautiful album very tranquil very peaceful I love Nick drakes voice it was amazing I love this album.
Jebeni pol mekartni i dzon lenon..... Zbog toga što nikad nećemo videti i čuti njega u punom potencijalu, umesto ocene 3,5 biću darovit i dobiće 4/5
Not something I would normally listen to but I like it. For the time that this album came out, I understand why it would have been popular. It was very smooth
We didn't deserve Nick when we had him and we didn't have him long enough. :(
Comfortable folk, sounds nice and engaging across the album if not sometimes a little too unexcitingly consistent to reach greater heights
some good shi 4.5
Surprisingly like this one a lot. A bit softer and slower than what I’m used to but Nick Drake has an incredibly beautiful and unique voice that’s very relaxing. I love the use of wind and string instruments. 3/10 added to ear candy
Love this! More than pink moon? Sailor moon! 4!
Nick Drake always feels like someone I want to be really into, and maybe if I could sit with his music and listen more closely I would get there. Otherwise, I enjoy his wispy voice and gentle tones. I think I prefer him unaccompanied, but this was good too.
Nick Drake spawned three hundred artists that my generation crowned kings of music, and almost all of them annoy me to some degree. The ones that didn't took this template and flew to new heights. Too many just kept writing little folk songs over and over. I've often wondered how many of those artists bothered to listen to his progression over the three albums. There's so much about his sound here that evolved from Five Leaves Left, while still being obviously him. I mostly hate this genre, but I'll never hate Nick Drake.
I love Pink Moon but had not listened to this album. This does not quite reach that level, but still an amazing listen with many beautiful songs. Will relisten.
it's successful farta bcz I have known about Nick in few days ago and now it's my first album generation. I love these jazz soft sounds I'm glad to know Nick's music now!
Solid album, didn’t blow me away but easy listeningz
Beautiful. It is a bit of a time and place album for me, but pretty flawless. Hazey Jane II is a masterpiece of an opener.
just vibes man
By all rights this should have been a huge hit. As well as Nick Drake’s sensitive vocals and folk guitar melodies, it has contributions from half of Fairport Convention, two musicians who worked on Pet Sounds and piano from John Cale of the Velvet Underground. It’s well produced and arranged, and is a joy to listen to, with breezy, wistful songs in a folk-rock style. However, a dispute about the cover art delayed the release that had been planned for Christmas 1970 and bizarrely it was never issued or promoted in North America. As a result, sales fell far short of what they should have been leaving the 22 year old Drake in a depressed and vulnerable state. His third album recorded the following year as a solo project was to be his last, and he died in 1974 aged just 26.
I think he does stripped down raw music better than bigger pieces like this but still love it
4.5/5
A breath of fresh air among the rest of the singer/songwriter trash AND he’s English?!?
This may be the first album I wished the vocals were louder but yet the fact nick’s voice is always smooth never erratic is very calming and refreshing to listen to
Beautiful personal sound the production is quite excellent on it
I love Nick Drake. I'm a songwriter too and his music has influenced me a lot in the past, especially harmonically speaking. This is my least favorite of his records, still it includes masterpieces like Poor Boy, One of These Things First and, especially, Northern Sky. It's all about sensitivity. In the music, in the words, in the arrangements. Class and elegance even in despair.
Didn’t really blow my mind, but was a pleasant listen
ok flute
3.5/5
Beautiful work with lots of soft tones and Melodie’s
The 3rd best of his 3 albums but still incredible
Had heard of Nick Drake but not much of his stuff. The first half especially was a really pleasant surprise. Great voice and songwriting with big production behind it, very good album.
Great chilled music
a banger, unsurprisingly so, liked the famous songs like northern sky the most
Very beautiful. The arrangements are truly great.
I was really surprised by this album and will happily go back to it. I guess I'm a Nick Drake fan now?
Hazey Jane II At The Chime Of A City Clock One Of These Things First Hazey Jane I Fly Poor Boy Northern Sky
beautiful and haunting. i’m giving this a 4.5 only so that i can give his other two albums 5’s
A great Nick Drake album, potentially the worst of his 3 albums but still quite good. Songs like One Of These Things First and Northern Sky mean quite a lot to me and the guitar playing on this album is also pretty impressive on something like Hazey Jane I.
3.5/5
more of a pink moon girlie 3.5
Love Nick Drake - haven’t listened to this one before and it’s great
Clean in its recording and musicality, I morn what Nick Drake could have done had he not succumbed to suicide. It’s an emotionally moving album balanced with lightness and hope of youth. His guitar playing is intricate and the bassist and drummer are clearly in tune with each other while also expressing creatively.
Beautiful and soothing musical arrangements, which work through to you after a second listening.
💕💫
Enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. No takeaways to listen to regularly, but the album was an enjoyable experience. Very soft, the use of a variety of instruments was very appreciated. Felt unique and real, if that makes sense.
I'm curious
album is great, love how all the songs have the same but different vibe, really like this genre of music.
Very pretty album.
Very nostalgic feel to the album, cold but at the same time comforting. I liked it
I have now had all 3 Nick drake albums generated. He’s got to be one of very few artists with more than 1 album to have all his albums in the book. Not that I’m complaining, because they’re all really great.
Joni Mitchell vibes I liked it
I know I have a music type, and this is absolutely my type 4.5
I loved this. I didn’t know it but I already knew Fly from The Royal Tenenbaums and really liked that song, and the rest of the album lived up to it. Such a beautiful, easy listen.
Very listenable. Loved it.
Between the art, the description, and the fact that I have no recollection of the artist, I just wasn't expecting to get too into this album. In this case, the artist wasn't around enough to push his own sound onto willing ears, making this more of a cult listen. A little digging and we see this genius left us early due to depression, and you get it. He wasn't really going to show off and make a following, this was way before SoundCloud. Something so precious can remain hidden fairly easily if you don't stop to look back or pay attention as it's happening. This project is musically exquisite. The lyrics feel thoughtful and tender. The concept is pulled off, the album is its own energy. I appreciate the sound of Nick's voice. I could only enjoy this more if I were already a dedicated folk fan. 4.2/5
When I initially read that this was a folk album, I went in thinking I would hate this album like all the rest of the folk albums I rated already. But this one hit different. The instrumentation wasn’t boring, the melodies were unique and kept me interested throughout the whole album. There’s more depth to this folk album than most. Kudos Nick Drake, kudos.
No. 342/1001 Introduction NR Hazey Jane II 4/5 At The Chime Of A City Clock 4/5 One Of These Things First 3/5 Hazey Jane I 5/5 Bryter Later 4/5 Fly 3/5 Poor Boy 3/5 Northern Sky 4/5 Sunday 3/5 Average: 3,67 The instrumentals are really great. I've now listened to all 3 of his albums. This is my favorite.
Nick Drake’s guitar has a very distinctive sound — it’s hard to describe, but it somehow brings out a sense of nostalgia mixed with a quiet sadness. Bryter Layter feels warm, yet slightly unsettled at the same time. “Hazey Jane” in particular really stood out to me.
Loved the middle tracks of the album. A great listen on a chill, sunny day. Loved the jazz elements.
Liked it. Album flowed nicely. Guitar rhythms were wild with thought provoking lyrics. Jazzy elements. I think hazy jane II and northern sky were my favorite songs which I guess goes along with the trend.
Great chillout melodies.
- instrumentals are so beautiful - poetic lyrics - such a unique voice
rate: 8/10 never listened to something like this before, fav was northern sky
Beautiful arrangements behind enjoyable 70s singer/songwriter music. Constructed and executed well. Set volume to medium low, invite guests, cook yummy food. Nick Drake sounds perfect behind any dinner party.
Love. Not used to this production behind his intimate vocals, string section especially feels excessive but I guess it was a thing that producers loved to do in the 70s. But also, literally Belle and Sebastian must’ve heard this album and based whole vibe after it. From the guitar to trumpets to Drake’s vocals.
The first gem of 2026. It possesses unparalleled artistic depth. I feel like I'm listening to something completely new, even though the album is over 5 decades old.
Favorite songs: Introduction, One of These Things First, Northern Sky
Whimsical album. So many songs that remind me of my early after college years.
I admit to no knowing Nick Drake. Loved it.
Began the list on 12/31/25 Pretty good folk album that I wouldn't mind having on vinyl. 4/5
This was an easy listen. Nick Drake reminds me of my dad, (and also Garden State.) His voice is gorgeous and distinctive. It faded into the background at times, but overall, I really enjoyed this whole album!
4/5. Drake is a lovely afternoon, evening, or early morning listen. I think he requires a contemplative mood to really enjoy. He rarely resides on your general playlist, but if you're in the right state of mind, a full album is a wonderful experience. Like his debut, and the album that follows this, he is a musician's musician. He hides his complexity most of the time with simple arrangements, but he is utterly brilliant with his harmonies and guitar playing. I think this one's better than his first, but lesser than his last. A perfect kind of progression.
An album of songs that would all be at home on a Wes Anderson movie (complimentary).
Heard of Mr. Drake but never heard his music. Mellow jazz-folk works for me.
Pretty groovy and jazzy; I liked it!
Solid 7.5/10
What an absolutely delightful album to start my day with. I think I’ll be coming back to this one on the regular!
luvet
Good to fall asleep to. Unironically.
Good music for relaxing or zoning out. Comfortable length.
Very enjoyable listen. I know Drake with Pink Moon. Therefore, the relatively polished production was a surprise but i enjoyed the colorfulness of the sound with flutes, pianos, saxophones. It was also very jazzy at times. Yet, Drake's soft voice and thoufgtful words are a nice contrast. Surprised to hear three instrumentals. Poor boy was very theater-like with the back vocals. Fly and northern sky are very beautiful songs. One of these things first is probably my favorite one.
Chillig und entspannt aber sehr besonders irgendwie also lowkey ideal für meinen geschmack
Day 130 Never listened to any Nick Drake before, enjoyed this, will be returning to it 8/10 Highlights At the chime of a city clock Fly Poor boy
Her var det mye jeg likte. Tror også at det er en plate som blir sterkere ved mere man lytter.
Great album.
Nice, gentle, folky. A little bit moody. Very appropriate to the era of early 1970s.
Sounds like a dream. Can tell these folk hoes took inspo from him.
Favorite track: Nothern Sky Pretty good pull for a first album, I enjoyed it but nothing special.
Had heard a lot about Nick Drake and was pleasantly surprised he lived up to the hype. Really enjoyed the vibe of this album. 4/5
- Third and final Nick Drake entry for me, and what a delightful, bitesized discography he has. Such a tragic story but his musical legacy is a true gift to the world. - I liked this a little more than Five Leaves Left and a little less than Pink Moon. There are a handful of absolutely stunning songs here; Northern Sky, One Of These Things First and Fly stood out immediately. - The accompaniment of a larger supporting band (mostly comprised of members of Fairport Convention) do help to fill out the sound but there's something about the rawness of Drake and his guitar playing that are sometimes overwhelmed by all the layers. All in all, a lovely album. Hope he is at peace now.
Beautiful guitar from Nick Drake rounded-out by some great studio musicians. His singing voice is a little fragile, weak, and I didn’t catch on to many lyrics on 1.5 listens, though it seems poetry is there. These songs showcase precocious and interesting talent from such a young, troubled person, gone, as so many like him are, far too soon.
I like this album a lot. It was really good. It felt like the cover. It was ethereal and whimsical and mystical, and transported me into another room and the songwriting was drinking. I felt that sometimes the song is dragged a little bit and then the instrumentals would kinda pick up and that’s what I would get back into the reckon but very chill. Very nice. I like it.
All the Nick Drake albums are lovely, but Pink Moon is the crucial one. This album strikes me as grasping for something that he can better attain without the saxophone and strings. Still good though.
I prefer pink moon but the difference isn't big enough justify knocking it down to a 3.
Good stuff, folksy guitar work with very breathy singing. Obviously a huge influence on Belle & Sebastian.
Pure 80s pop and very enjoyable it is too! Edwin Collins has gone on to make some fabulous music and he cut his teeth with this band.
I think this is a bit of a grower - I like it, but wouldn't reach for it big time, I guess.
Classic folk singer-songwriter. Makes me want to go lie in a field or take a nature walk—in the best way. I’ve listened to several songs on this album for years (One Of These Things First & Northern Sky), but it’s a great record to listen through beginning to end. Reminds me of college. It’s heartbreaking we didn’t get more from Nick Drake. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pretty great record as a whole. And thats the kicker. I would gladly listen to the whole piece start to finish but I feel like I'll have a harder time when the couple songs I liked come up at random. Im more partial to the tracks with vocals but ,though I never say this, they almost need the instrumental sections too. Im not too sure how to handle this one. I feel like I need more time with it but so far its great, with potential to be incredible. Glad to have heard it thats for sure
Lush, orchestral, pretty good 3.5/5
Really enjoyed this - lovely orchestral tracks and good vocals.
Beautiful record. Such a haunting voice. Soothing melodies, mysterious lyrics. Elite folk music.
I love Nick Drake but this one is subtraction by addition for me. Some truly overproduced tracks here, Poor Boy, dear god, make it stop. Nicks songwriting and voice are enough to over come the negatives and there’s some gorgeous songs here. A far cry from Pink Moon for me but still very good
Very interesting to hear Nick Drake with backing musicians. I enjoyed the jazzier moments but overall a great folk album. Beautiful cover and another tragic death.
Quite enjoyed it
I'm aware of a few of these through use in various soundtracks. This is certainly a vibe. I'll want to listen to this again.
Real nice listening. I had heard Pink Moon and a few other of Drake's songs previously, but this is his first album I've listened to. Many of the songs have incredibly sad lyrics but the music is undeniably mellow.
Nick Drake is a fucking legend. Fantastic listen!
Somehow, I had missed Nick Drake and his entire poignant arc. Shame we lost him so early; he could have had a lasting career with his talent.
Rather lovely

Pleasant listen
Very nice instrumental arrangements here
Man, Nick Drake was such a talented guitarist. Gone way too soon. I've really only listened to Pink Moon, so hearing him with full backing instruments here was a nice change. The strings on “Introduction” were beautiful and sat perfectly under his guitar. And “Hazey Jane II” might be the most upbeat I have ever heard him, which was a fun surprise. It just feels warm, easy to listen to, and really shows off how talented he was. Favorite song: Hazey Jane II
Brilliant guitar work, dark and brooding lyrics. An interesting listen but not something that needs to be on my playlist.
Beautiful record. Such rich arrangements for a singer songwriter guitarist. Some of his most singable melodies. Still my least favourite of nicks (but that's such a high bar)
An exampel of overarranged songs. Out of a sudden a violin and a trumpet appears, taken away the magic of Nick Drake's songs. The only outstanding exceptions is 'One of these things first'.
Discovering Nick Drake has been one of my favourite parts of the whole project. Having listened, I do agree he's better with a sparser sound.
Liked it a lot, some great unique guitar playing. Of all the albums I’ve listened to for this project, this has the most new songs that I’ve found that I like.
4.5. Not familoar with this album but know nick drake. Very pet sounds like which is a good thing.
8/10 Always a pleasure to listen to Nick Drake, and my first time revisiting Bryter Layter in full for quite some time, although there are some songs from this album that I listen to frequently. The Janes and ‘One Of These Things First’ are clearly the best songs here to me. The instrumental tracks - the title track and ‘Sunday’ are not really strong enough to let me score this album any higher, but I do bloody love Nick Drake regardless. Listens: 2
riktigt bra arrangerat, inget superspeciellt men helt ok till bra utöver det. typexempel för en 4/5
Very pleasant album. Easy album to get through with a few familiar tracks. It's not hard to see why this album was so influential.
Hushed vocals, beautiful melodies, finger picked guitar, misty eyed atmosphere of an England that never was... Best Tracks: Hazy Jane II; One of These Things First; Northern Sky
Such a sweet album. It's probably Nick Drake's least good, but the bar is so high from the other two albums, it's still great. The only "weakness" of this album is that the instrumental backing feels a little random at times (here's a flute solo out of nowhere!). But it's all high quality. And the consistency comes from Drake's ruminant lyrics and his beautiful soft voice.
I just love Nick Drake’s sound. There is nothing being overproduced, but for some reason his sound and his voice both feel so ahead of their time. I could listen to this again and again. Best Track: Northern Sky
There are some fun-Drake-mentalists out there that insist Nick Drake is a very top-tier artist. I would know because I am married to one. As an aside fun-Drake-mentalists rarely have fun. However, they are...anyway. As another aside, please feel free to use and popularize the term fun-Drake-mentalist, it is almost as bad as Nick Drake himself, but I digress. This album is totally fine, he sings nicely, good for him. While you gather your torches and pitchforks I'll be over here, probably listening to Arcade Fire or Blondie. If you see a 4 or 5 star review you'll know they got to me and they might be coming for you next.
So good, another album I had forgotten about
Simply glorious
I quite liked this album. It was interesting yet soothing, nostalgic but not boring. I enjoyed the instrumentation immensely. The singing and the lyrics we're also good. I would definitely listen to this album again. 4 out of 5.
Dig the singing
As a longtime fan of Pink Moon I’ve always meant to listen to Nick Drake’s other work and it just never happened, so I am very grateful this list has finally forced it upon me. Real good stuff
It’s great but my favourite will always be pink moon
I hadn't ever heart of Nick Drake before opening this webpage. But I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. Very southing and I feel like it does a good job of having a lot of different complimentary instrumentals. I'm definitely going to listen to this again. VERY strong 4, waffled between 4 and 5 for awhile.
3.5
GOOD
Nun also auch noch das dritte Album von Nick Drake ...
Have mixed feelings but I think I really enjoy it.
Love Pink Moon but it’s the only album I’ve listened to by Nick Drake. This one has been a beautiful surprise. Love the orchestral arrangements that accompany, love the melancholy.
I liked this album a lot, will be listening to more Nick Drake as a result. Hope it sounds similar!
86/100. Beautiful and extremely cozy. Like a warm blanket on a rainy day.
Actually really liked this Nick Drake album
Really, really liked this. Not sure what to expect and I hadn't heard of Nick Drake before but immediately recognized him as the guy that did Pink Moon. Didn't like some of the dated sounds (what is that, a flute or a clarinet?) and for a guy that writes lyrics like that I didn't see the need for the instrumentals. Can't give it a 5 it's almost there for me.
I didn’t save any songs but would rate a 4/5 simply on vibes alone.
This is a lovely album. There is a scent of horse manure and cut grass throughout. Drakes musical legacy is so thin that albums such as this should be cherished. Northern sky is melodic and lyrically very interesting. One to return to.
(4) whimsical
The most impressive thing I've noticed about Nick Drake is he is credited as the only performer on this record. He is a master of all things strings. Absolutely beautiful music. 4.4 outta 5
Never heard of this guy and folk is a bit of an enigma, but holy moly, this was some lovely cuddly stuff and the guy's voice made me forget my existence so much I almost pissed my pants. A really good listen and would recommend.
Beauty in song form. Kendrick could not win against this guy. Don’t plan on going back to ot so 4/5.
Generator random strikes again. Got Nick Drake 3 days ago, and got him again now. And again, just another fantastic set of folk pop tracks. Although I will say I do prefer Five Leaves Left. Bryter Layter is great, but for my money, it's a tad too lush and orchestral. Some of it reminds me of Joni Mitchell with it's slight jazziness, but it's just not hitting me like Mitchell does. Hazey Jane II might be my favorite track, with it's Charlie Brown ass sound, feeling like it's a huge inspiration of Belle and Sebastian. So yeah. Great album. Just slightly prefer Five Leaves Left.
Nick Drake is unique, love this album and everything it brings
In his lane, Nick Drake is excellent. He occupies an interesting space between folk and psychedelic alternative rock. Where Donovan seems a little too on the nose, Drake lands perfectly. A precursor to Elliott Smith. Good stuff.
More orchestration than expected and maybe necessary, but the voice and guitar playing are sublime.
We’ve now done the full Nick Drake discography and this was the worst of the three I think, but was still very pleasant morning coffee music.
Nice, soft album. Arrangements are pretty much flawless (there is a full band on this one) and work great with Drake’s voice. Having a hard time deciding whether it’s a four or five star album. 4/5
One of the nice things this list has given me is a newfound appreciation for Nick Drake
great album
Of Drake’s three albums, Bryter Layter probably gets the least love from critics. But I really appreciate the more upbeat arrangements, which allow Drake’s vocals to be appreciated/considered in a new way. So good. I’m especially drawn to “One of These Things First.”
Enjoyed first listen. Kept it on repeat. Gets better with every listen.
Fantastic artist
Three Nick Drake albums in the span of a few months feels like guerilla marketing for anti-depressants, but from checking his wikipedia page, I do believe this means no more will be coming. His guitar playing and vocals remain gorgeous but we need some Halen or something up in this b.
AT LAST! I've been waiting for my third Nick Drake album to pop on this project and round out his criminally short discography. And this definitely did not disappoint. This man really had a folk style all his own, and he infused it with jazz, to boot. His voice and stylings continue to remind me so much of Jack Johnson -- a unique, lazy, dreamy voice with minimal, chill music. I would genuinely be so surprised if Jack Johnson had not been extremely influenced by Nick Drake. After having heard these three albums, I just can't help but feel like Nick Drake was drastically ahead of his time. He was said to have a very boring and quiet stage personality, and that this contributed to his weak album performance while he was alive because those that did recognize him did so equally quietly. But truly, his music and vocals are very much aligned with modern day folk, and I can imagine a lot of people in today's bustling times really appreciating and admiring his no-frills, simple performances. I will also add that, having heard a couple of albums by Fairpoint Connections on this project, their influence and performance on this album is very apparent and it melds well with Drake's work. Nick Drake, I am sorry you were under-appreciated in life (though, if what we know about you is any indication, you probably preferred it that way), but just know your music has posthumously reached and touched so many people who understand your vision and enjoy your artistry. You've been one of my favorite discoveries on this project.
I sure do love Nyck Drayke (sic). Very witty, wise, robust songwriter and guitarist who released some of his finest works in the warly 70's. In line with Crosby, Still, and Nash but also in good spirits with the Dead melodies and motiffs. Damn good musician Nick Drake is. This is the type of sound I reach for in Autumn and instead of that Elliot Smith doofus
Dreamy
This is beautiful music although I prefer his 'non band' stuff. It was nice to get an album I enjoyed listening to! I might be wrong, but I think we have had all 3 of his albums, that 100% of his studio work!
I preferred the previous 2 Nick Drake albums, and while I'm so pleased to have listened to his music through this challenge I don't feel like this album adds much.
First time listening to Nick Drake. Enjoyed throughout. Such light music
Its always a good morning when I wake up and listen to Nick Drake
Quite enjoyed! Nick Drake album also yesterday (what are the chances?). Definitely like, not sure I’d seek him out for a relisten.
A nice album to play while at a barbecue and what not. 4/5
Solid album
I liked it. 2/2 for Nick Drake, whom I had never heard of before.
Lovely.
pretty good, sounds like jack johnson kinda or the other way around
Not bad at all and any album that can land tracks in the movie soundtracks of Garden State and The Royal Tenenbaums is alright by me
Solid album, Bob Dylan vibes. Liked it
Not sure how much can I take from this in one day of listening, but I already love "Pink Moon" and like a lot his first album, so this one is the only one I haven't listened to fully yet. Will be an enjoyable ride, I'm sure. So far this is quite different from his 2 other albums as this has orchestration on top of it which does fit nicely even though I heard Nick did not like it himself. Weird to hear something like "Poor Boy" from Mr. Drake - it has Sax, backing vocals akin to the Stones record, not bad though. Also, interestingly, parts of the last track reminded me of some song of Bowie, but can't remember which one. So far I really like side 1 and especially that instrumental introduction is breathtaking, other highlights of mine would include "One of these things first" and "Northern Sky". Side 2 seems weaker, and I can't help but compare this to Pink Moon. So for this one, strong 4 stars seems likely. P.S. I know what flute melody in instrumental "Sunday" reminds me off! "Kooks" from David Bowie!
Really enjoyed listening to this one. It’s got some great study jams and thought that the riffs were all pretty much engaging. Would listen to again
I love Nick Drake - I was first introduced to him from the Garden State soundtrack, but too much is a little like eating too much candy.
A classic folk led, jazz and orchestral fueled singer songwriter beauty.
I think this suffers from being overproduced in contrast to Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon - much in the same way Nick Drake allegedly expressed. The album is at its strongest when it showcases Nick, and not the band that was assembled for him. The instrumental tracks range from good to fair. It's my least favourite of his, but it's still a very good record.
Solid album by him again. I like this dude’s misic. Maybe not as good as the one with the cool album art but still, loved listening to this
Really liked the style of Nick Drake. He's like a more soft Neil Young which I like as well. The instrumentals are very pretty and the lyrics are good, all in all a good find
A hidden gem.
Great album, with some (but few) low points although it manages to keep interesting throughout. Especially loved the jazzy feel of "Poor Boy" and the closing instrumental track "Sunday", which perfectly ties the album together. First thing I ever hear of Nick Drake's, can't wait to listen to more.
Beautiful. Just what I needed today. This album feels like a mirror made of music. Softly devastating, gently perfect. I resonate so deeply with his lyrics and the strange safety of isolation and solitude over being misunderstood.
Hauntingly beautiful. Nick Drake provides something unique, even amongst his singer songwriter contemporaries. Oddly, the tracks that sound most like the music being made by his contemporaries are songs like Bryter Layter in which Nick's voice is missing and more emphasis is given to the backing band lilting in the more common constructions of melodies of the the time.
Not my favorite album of Drake's but still a really damn solid offering. What a shame he didn't have more output or receive the help he needed to right his ship.
Good classic album.
Pretty good
heard it before, always liked
Another short album of only 30+ minutes filled with poetic lyrics and a mix of melancholy instrumentals to cheerful romantic tunes, it's dominated by lyrical poetry with a few instrumental tracks that calm loud noise in the mind. It transforms it all to a more safe space that isn't harassed by negative emotions. Overall, it was an enjoyable ride with a few songs I enjoyed (mainly the instrumental tracks).
Very musical with pleasant acoustic string sounds, piano and trumpet/sax. Soundscape is so modern that I was surprised to learn that it was from 1971. Favorite track: one of these things first other picks: Introduction, At the chime of a city clock, Northern Sky
After three Nick Drake albums I’m consistently impressed by consistently never blown away.
love his voice, the lyrics, and the whole vibe!
Nick Drake was an amazing musician with a magical voice. Top tier. Pairs well with picnics in the forest on cool, bright days.
Something to get propesed too
I really enjoyed listening to this album after a long day of work. Nick Drakes voice was calm and soothing and so was the music. Favorite tracks: Northern Sky, Haley Jane I I will listen again
На фоне двух других его альбом, этот, конечно, чувствуется очень слабым. Но любой музыкант мечтает о таком слабом альбоме, конечно. Лучшая песня - Northern Sky.
Fuck yeah depressed folkie. Love Nick drake, man
The chill vocals over actual instruments instead of just solo acoustic guitar gives Nick Drake a whole different vibe that I love.
I had never heard of Nick Drake, what a beautiful album. Such a shame we lost him so young
This was a cool chamber pop-folk album that I didn’t see coming. It’s a folk album at its core, but it mixes in elements of chamber pop, baroque pop, and jazz. One interesting thing about this album is that it includes contributions from members of Fairport Convention and the Velvet Underground.
I saw singer songwriter from the 70s and groaned. But I was SO WRONG. This was delightful. A lovely voice and instrumentation. Holds up over time. 4* Highlights: one of these things first
Keeping It simple, this feels like flying in a starry night. 85/100
Nick Drake's second album Bryter Layter has a dreamy quality about it. I'm dreaming of being a fashion model in a TV commercial for a greatest hits album by Burt Bacharach wearing a mod dress with perfect bangs. I'm dreaming of me. I'm dreaming of you without me. It makes me feel sad & happy, sometimes in the same song. Bryter Layter is very much an album of its time but also timeless. John Cale of The Velvet Undergrounds plays on Bryter Layter. You know how sometimes you open a window & there is a scent that reminds you of a time & place in your life? Maybe how the playground smelled in fourth grade? That's the how the production on Bryter Layter feels like to me. I will play this album again.
3-4
Pink moon is one of my favorites, so I knew I would like this. Already knew a few songs off this one, but had never listened to the album all the way through. Really enjoyed it, still prefer the sparse and simple sound of Pink Moon, but this was a great listen
i have a hard time forming a solid opinion on nick drake but this is probably my favorite album of his
Supremely vibey but didn’t blow my mind. Will return though.
Fuller band record is interesting but I prefer his solo acoustic stuff. Still a very good record
nice vibes. sometimes funky, wistful, happy, folksy. nice flutes
:)
Aangename stem, leuke muziek. Gelaagd, met houtblazers, strijkers…
Æ huske ikke om æ har hørt nokka særlig på det her Nick Drake-albumet før, æ tror kanskje ikke æ eide det, men det e i samme bane som Five Leaves Left, så æ likte det.
I enjoyed this. I had heard a few of the songs from complications or soundtracks. The album as a whole was great!
85% Best: Hazey Jane II; At The Chime Of A City Clock; Poor Boy; Northern Sky Must-Hear? Sure
It's not Pink Moon, but it's still a representation of what a great writer he was. One of These Things First was my first introduction through the Garden State Soundtrack. Then Fly from Royal Tenenbaums. Some great songs, the rest of the full instruments aren't entirely beneficial.
Very enjoyable music. Another sad loss of a young artist.
Really enjoyed this and added a song to the playlist 7/10
Paisible, beau et mélodieux, senti
3.5
Exceptional album. Really good tracks. Stands up to the test of time.
Good album. Like old Paolo Nutini.
First time hearing the whole album and it was great, loved the instrumental interludes.
Some really nice songs. Big fan.
Drake's lyrics and instrumentation shine as always on this record, with a unique blend of introspection and magenta colored glasses through which he sees the world
Four stars for the guitar and lyrics. Drake's voice is like a gentle whisper striving to be heard and yet not daring to draw attention to the vocalist. Most of the album made me feel like hiding from the world. Talented Guy with lots of struggles.
A really good album! It includes folk, rock, jazz, and blues all on one album. Really good!!
It's albums like this that I continue this long journey for. The production on this album is fantastic. While Nick Drake has a more folksy voice which wouldn't normally keep me wanting to listen, somehow it all comes together quite well. I liked this album even more than his first album. I can't wait for the next album!
Beautiful album, just great acoustic music with rich production. Easy to connect with and pleasing.
What an absolutely beautiful record. I liked the instrumentation in each track. I enjoyed the sombre tones in this record. This record is the first on my list currently that made me do some research on the artist. Sad to have found out that he passed away young and lived such a troubled life. Favourite Track(s): Introduction, One Of These Things First Least Favourite Track(s): Sunday
Not as good as pink moon but good
Really good! You know who else is good? John Martyn! Haven't listened to Drake before really, though I've heard I should lots. Enjoyed it very much. Go listen to 'London Conversation' by John Martyn next.
He certainly doesn't NEED all that extra instrumentation, but it still sounds very nice
Beautiful
I have been on the fence with Nick Drake, but this album has me leaning toward more listening of his discography. The feel of this album seems natural and fluid in a way that puts one at ease. Listen to this on a Sunday morning or on your headphones during a walk in the woods. Peaceful and uplifting. Reminds me of Beck's Morning Phase or Jethro Tull.
Nick Drake, c'est bien. Pas aussi bien que Nick Drake seul avec sa guitare, mais quand même.
Lovely, lovely stuff. I’ve floated around Nick Drake for years and enjoyed several of his songs but never dove deep, that’s definitely going to change now because I enjoyed this so much. Especially Hazey Jane I & II. Can hear the influence on some of my favourite current artists like Jose Gonzalez, Nick Mulvey and Roo Panes. A very comforting sound. So terribly sad he died so terribly young. (4.5 stars)
Five Leaves Left was his masterpiece. Strong hooks and gorgeous orchestration littered with musical surprises. This album doesn’t measure up. While it has the same elements, they’re not as striking as Five Leaves Left. But, it’s still a good listen and far superior to most of the schlock being released at the time.
Wow. Loved some songs
Very chill. I have heard Nick's voice before and did not know the name. Not bad to chill out to.
Vibey, nix hängen geblieben aber fließt nice
I liked it pretty well. Definitely seventies, pretty mellow. Cross between jazz and folk Rating: 4 stars (probably would listen again)
Brilliant atmospheric chamber folk
Better than his first, arrangements are very good. Pleasant garden party music
Tulee mielee paul simon Kivaa pimputtelua
This is lovely
Love Nick Drake this is probably closer to a 4.5
This is the most polished and produced of Nick Drake's albums and, while I still enjoyed it, it loses something because of that in my eyes. The thing I love most about Nick's music is his fragile voice and it gets lost a little here, especially when instruments like the saxophone are included. It is a very worthwhile listen. I liked Hazey Jane II and Northern Sky in particular. It's just not as good as Pink Moon or Five Leaves Left for me.
Yeah
Thought, More Too Much UK, but it's great.
Musically, compositionally, I think this album is absolutely sublime! The instrumentals are pure emotion, I was, and am, astonished by it. Now. this is nothing new to my thinking and my reviewing, so I just need to be straight up about it: I don't love Nick Drake's voice. I actually think if all else, including his guitar work, etc. were exactly the same, but he had a hired singer that wasn't him, it would be an absolute corker! It is so beautiful, lyrically and instrumentally that it kills me to do it, but I have to go from absolute 5 star all in all the way to four stars because I am just too on the fence with his singing.
This is such a good melancholic, singer-songwriter album. Bryter Layter is so great, although it's hard not to compare this to Pink Moon, which is an all time favorite. 8/10
Chill 70's folk vibes.
Songs too similar, but good folk
3.75
8/10- I’d never heard of Nock Drake before this album, I now very much know of Nick Drake. This album felt quite pioneering and perfected genre fusion before it was really a thing.
Some very enchanting sounds and good instrumentalism. Big fan of the folky, jazzy, orchestral fusions. Interesting vocal style. I was also surprised at the album being from the early 70s. The music seems a bit more experimental for that time.
Lovely guitar His voice can at times be a little of putting Nice, interesting compositions Overall a really nice jazzy folky interesting album
Nice mellow music
Proof that Nick Drake was more than just a sad-boy folk singer. Bossa-nova and jazz influences abound as Drake's guitar takes a backseat to play off piano, saxophone, and even female backing singers. Loses a star for containing 'Fly', the only dud of his studio discography.
good, but not great.
A beautiful, pleasant, concise album. Singing in cursive decades before we had a name for it lol.
Really liked this one. I do feel a lot of the songs bled into the other. I would like to come back to this one.
