Reviews (page 4 of 14)
I still remember the first time I listened to this album, even though it's been so many years since then. I was 12 years old and dragged by my parents to a family friend's house for Sunday lunch. After eating, it started pouring outside, and we all ran to the living room. My dad's friend put this record on the turntable. I was instantly mystified. I was incredibly socially anxious when I was a teen but I found the courage to ask what was playing. Ever since then, I often listen to that record on a rainy afternoon and feel at peace with myself. 9.5/10 Fave track: Very difficult to choose as I love them all, but I come back to Northern Sky more often.
Nick Drake has that rare quality of making something unique seem familiar. I loved this album in college, so it has a special place in my musical heart. But I think the appeal is undeniable, there are so many delightful songs on this album ("At the Chime of a City Clock", "One of These Things First")
Hell yeah
Excellent album
🌺 ✌️ groovy vibes
Not my favorite Nick Drake album, but still a five star freaking solid album
Vitosta.. Ei valittelua....
This is an interesting one. Nick Drake only released three albums, all slightly different and all excellent. So, if only one Nick Drake album gets the nod, is it this one. I think it comes down to whether you like the bleak almost solo effort that is Pink Moon, or the fleshed out Bryter Layter with almost jazz folk backing (Van Morrisonesque). I am in the Bryter Layter camp tonight (especially Northern Sky).
Vet album! Had dit totaal niet verwacht, maar ga ik vaker luisteren.
Just those amazing melodies, like birds against a blue sky, but with a lower chance of getting pooped on.
Amazing and doomed songwriter
I really love this album! I loved the feel I loved the female accompaniment. Had a great sound and was such a pleasant listen.
I’m always gonna love nick drake. That intro is one of the most beautiful orchestrations in the history of pop. This album is an easy five no matter how many times I’ve heard it
we started this journey with a nick drake 5, and this album is even better. beautiful orchestration, great lyrics, easy 5.
I love Nick Drake. This is a regular summer listen
Nick Drake was an incredible talent and I’m so sad we lost him before his time. Another brilliant album.
Simply incredible. Some of the best soft rock I've ever heard.
As my very first encounter with him it will always have a special place in my heart.
This album is more accompanied than Nick Drake's other two albums, especially when contrasted to Pink Moon. Drake intended it to evoke Pet Sounds, and even had some Beach Boys session musicians play in addition to part of the Fairport Convention and the Velvet Underground's John Cale. The result is an incredibly lush album that captures the cream of the crop of British folk. Nick Drake's guitar playing is absurdly precise and always retains a striking clarity even against the backdrop of strings and horns. His lyrics turn their focus to the drudgery of city life and even the music feels more full and cosmopolitan. The outlook is still bleak.
Any nick drake is a 5 from me. I love the Hazey Jane if you know what I mean.
Beautiful and timeless
Different to what I had expected having briefly listened to some of Pink Moon in the past. Was expecting a stripped back acoustic led album and was pleasantly surprised to hear the accompanying band. Fantastic album. Despite Drake's solemn lyricism and delivery, the production is bright - Drake's masterful plucking and beautiful string arrangements throughout. Masterpiece.
I am happy to admit that I first heard Nick Drake from the Pink Moon VW commercial back in the early 2000s. Gladly, proudly admit that I looked up the artist and devoured his entire short discography. I am only sad that I didn't do this sooner so I could have more time with this man's beautiful music in my life. Nick Drake is one of those once-in-a-generation type talents, and Bryter Layter is an incredible work. Northern Lights is one of my favorite songs, and the entire album is a front-to-back listen. I don't claim to understand his demons, but I am glad he graced us with what he had as long as he could.
The lilting piano of One of These Things First, John Cale's haunting viola on Fly, the romanticism of Northern Sky, the deceptively jazzy Poor Boy...all tied together by Nick Drake's beautiful fingerpicking and haunting voice. One of my favorite albums, 5/5.
This is a beautiful album
Sjukt bra. Är det hans bästa?
Puur genieten. Mijn collega's hebben gevraagd welk album dit is (ze doen dit nooit). Dit album verdiend 6/5!
Oh, I love Nick Drake. All of these albums give me a feeling of nostalgia even though I was born in the 1990s. This particular one isn't my very favorite, but it is still very very solid in my opinion.
I had to jump ahead when I saw this album upcoming. I discovered Nick Drake just over a year ago. I had been listening to a Dylan album and when it finished playing, Nick Drake's songs kept showing up in the random suggestions that followed (e.g., Pink Moon and Place to Be from his final album but One of These Things First and Northern Sky from this one). I got increasingly curious and eventually decided to listen to his full collection, which is sadly only 3 albums. But what a set of 3 albums. I remember asking a few friends who know a lot about music including folk whether they knew of Nick Drake. One of them said something like "tortured soul who died super young and unknown, right?" Yep. If you liked Jeff Buckley's soft instrumentals and beautiful voice, you'll love Nick Drake. Different vocals but still beautiful and perfectly matched with the instrumentals that accompany it. Crazy how both died so young with so much untapped talent. I can't understand how his music wasn't more popular during his lifetime, even if he was a recluse. It's just so amazing - touches your soul. Hauntingly beautiful. I did not realize that part of Fairport Convention was his backing band - had no idea who those guys were either until they showed up on this list but I was pleasantly surprised by their album and sound. I guess I know why now. Can't stop gushing about this guy or his work; I love recommending him to anyone who asks me for an off-the-beaten path music suggestion. Incredible album.
Nick Drake is an artist that I first discovered back in the early 2000s when I bought his debut solo album after hearing a few of his songs covered by another band that I was into. I fell in love with that album right away and bought all the rest of music, including Made to Love Magic compilation. For some reason though I listened to a lot of that first album and Pink Moon but never dived into this one. After listening to it for this review I’m regretting that. This album is beautiful. There’s something about Nick Drake’s songs that are timeless. They could have been written yesterday or a hundred years ago even if the production and arrangement of the songs are indicative of their times. Needless to say, I will be listening to this one a lot more now.
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. What an album. What a mood it sets. Of its time and timeless. Bookended by two gorgeous instrumentals, the album is simply a beautiful journey. That word, "beautiful" kept coming to mind constantly through the album. Spent time reading about Nick Drake - I wonder if he's the only artist to have every studio album in the 1001 albums? Sad life, but amazing music. Favorite tracks: Hazey Jane I (Hazey Jane II seems out of place, but nice to hear an upbeat song in the midst of this album), Fly, Poor Boy (this song got stuck in my head - extra love for the great piano solo and background singers), Northern Sky (captivating song).
Absolute beaut of a record. Huge fan of Pink Moon but never listened to his earlier records, so I was pleased this came up. Surprised too as it’s got more of a band sound at times than Pink Moon. It grew and grew as it went on and after a few listens I grew to love it. Probably prefer Pink Moon, but I’ve known that a lot longer and it is one of my top all time records.
4.5/5 Best: Poor Boy/ Hazey Jane II Worst: Fly Haven't listened to Nick Drake before but it is a well made album.
Fantástico! Um clima de dia frio no campo. Lembra um pouco o Roberto Carlos da mesma época. Bora ouvir mais coisas do primo do Uncharted!
Vage stem, maar erg rustig & mooi
4.5
Excellent album: calm, lilting, quietly uplifting. There's a very sweet, light, but mournful lyricism throughout. Gentle without being soft, subtle without being boring. An album you'll remember and revisit through your life, and an album that will evolve with the listener.
I loved the mix of folk with orchestral stuff. Great variety of instruments without sounding cluttered. Beautiful sound overall.
Just a really lovely album
I liked this album. The guitar playing was great, and his singing fit well with it for the most part. However, the instrumental songs were my favorite part of the album; they're so soothing to listen to. Also, the song Sunday reminds me of the Super Smash Bros Brawl Trophy music lmao. Favorite song: Bryter Layter Worst song: Poor Boy
J'adore nick drake et cet album est vraiment super ! 5
I'm a big Nick Drake fan, so I've heard this album a number of times. It's beautiful. Nearly every song on it is a standout to me in it's own way. Standout Tracks: Hazey Jane 2, At the Chime of a City Clock, One of These Things First, Hazey Jane I, Fly, Northern Sky
Tesko opustanje i melankolija
hazy Jane II: Love his voice wtf Album cover reminds me of something i can’t remember what I’m getting early paolo I want to lie in grass Clock song: sax is nice but mum wouldn’t like it One of these things: I’m getting the same grassy feel A more low-key going up the country wonder what year 1970 so like 20 years earlier that’s crazy It’s making me emotional Hazy Jane I: why after 2 Fly: Bob Dylan kinda idk Poor boy: jazzy piano makes me want to cry but good Sunday:forgot to write in a bunch but still appreciating the album Oh shit no is that it Fuckkkkkk Easy 8/10
You wont hear many more charming and unconfrontational albums as this
This man allows me to stop listening to music. his voice is amazing, his compositions are wonderful, this album is beautiful, the more i listen the more my ears just need him and only him
Outstanding mixing/recording, and the voice of a songbird. Lovely soft lyrics, and a mix of piano, sax, and guitar that is simply sublime.
I was so impressed by this man I knew nothing about. I swear that he had influenced every singer songwriter of the past 50 years
Just great.
Hazey Jane II basically made the cross that Belle and Sebastian's entire career scored. Northern Sky is one of the most beautiful songs ever. This a really great album and I love it. One of These Things first was on a freebie compilation on a magazine when I was 14 and was my way to Nick. A lovely way to spend 40 minutes - if I have only one criticism, I wasn't a fan of the saxophone.
Ohhhh it's an absolute beauty. So formative for me. My neighbour in Kentish Town whilst I was at university (who was almost definitely an arms dealer???) introduced me to Nick Drake and this is mayyyybe my fave Nicky D album. It's so insanely beautiful. It's sad and haunting but also magical and fairytale. No other album has ever made me feel the same feels as this one and probably never will, that's mostly down to Nick's voice and musical style but also this specific album too. LOVE it.
mi primera vez escuchando este album y a nick drake, realmente me lleve una sorpresa, desde la armoniosa bienvenida con "introduction" hasta la hermosa melodia del final con "sunday" el album me encantó. sin duda una de las mejores cosas que escuché. su melancolia, dulce melodia y prolijidad en general es impecable. recomendadisimo a cualquier oido fav song: at the chime of a city clock ☆ one of these things first ☆ poor boy northern sky 5.0
Really difficult to rate, since is not the type of album I’m used to Most of the songs are pretty warming, and they all individually gave me the sensation of being in different Scenarios Considering I don’t have anything to compare with, my rate could be different, but I really liked it Kinda remembers me of my dad
"Bryter Layter" is the second of three studio albums from English singer-songwriter Nick Drake and last one with backing musicians. And what a backing he had: Members of Fairport Convention (Richard Thompson, Dave Pegg, Dave Mattacks), John Cale and Beach Boy sessions musicians Mike Kovalski and Ed Carter. This is beautiful sounding music and singing - gentle, relaxing and quiet. The lyrics themselves are poetic but also sad or melancholy which is in contrast to the music. The music itself is much happier with great acoustic guitars, jazzy with horns and also somewhat Baroque pop with the string arrangements. I'm always a sucker for dichotomies in lyrics and the music; this is a great album. Nick Drake suffered from depression and would die four years from a drug overdose (suspect suicide). His music would and continues to grow in popularity and influence. I definitely hear that today. The album begins with an instrumental which then goes into "Hazey Jane II". The horns and the Backing Fairport Convention gives the music a majestic, rollicking and happy feel. I think Drake is singing about the hard reality of society. Here is where I hear major influences in the band Belle & Sebastian's music. "At the Chime of a City Clock" has a more melancholy feel and Baroque pop with the added strings and horns. Drake had moved to London from the country and this song gives his observations. "Poor Boy" appears to have very personal lyrics about Drake himself and his introverted nature. Great piano by session-player Chris McGregor. There are backing gospel singers which some critics don't like. I found it find. "Northern Sky" is perhaps my favorite song on the album. John Cale adds a lot with his piano playing. Interesting drums. A sad love song. I highly recommend this album. I seem to gain a little more with each listen. Any one of Nick Drake's albums are worth checking out.
Cool first album. I’ve already listened to this one many times. Really helps calm me down when I’m feeling anxious. Really interesting melodies and vocals.
There's a little Nick Drake in all of us...
This is an excellent album, so much so that I listened to the whole back catalogue of Nick Drake and researched a bit more about his life. Tragic that he died only at 26, but leaving a legacy of his beautiful voice and compositions which remain timeless.
First time ever hearing Nick Drake, never stumbled across his work before, despite being 70s rock. The acoustic guitar is beautiful, his voice is smooth and soothing, what a lovely experience. Im a bit biased as this is the type of music i enjoy a lot, but still, one of the better albums ive gotten since starting this.
This album is one of my favourite, I absolutely adore nick drake, although this is my least favourite drake record. The jazz, funk and folk sound Is majestic and captivating, northern sky is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, strong 10
In some ways over-orchestrated compared to FLL - time can only just be kind to the "hello trees" instrumentals, but Poor Boy and Northern Sky are sublime. Anyone else hear Hazey Jane I and think it anticipated Dire Straits by 8 years?
🟦 91 🥇 One of these things first 🥈 Poor boy 🥉 Northern sky
I listen to Pink Moon so much I forgot how good this album is.
Amazing 70s folk. Extremely well written and relaxing. Excellent song writing talent.
Beautiful, timeless.
All 3 Nick Drake albums are 5s, but this one is my favourite. Shows off his underrated guitar work and of course the songwriting is stellar. Poor Boy is my favorite but each song has their own charms. 5 🌟
Garden State moment
Очень красивый и мелодичный альбом. Кратко, но слов нет :)
Juste du bonheur quoi
This is a really great album. Hazy Jane 1 & 2, One of These Things First, Poor Boy, all great, great songs
Hauntingly beautiful. I'm glad the world got to appreciate Nick Drake. I'm said he never knew.
This British singer/songwriter has been an influence for so many of my favorite artists and it’s easy to see why. Beautiful instrumentation coupled with an almost whisper of a vocal style.
Perfect Sunday listenjng
Superb
One of my favourite albums ever. I am a sucker for lush strings, and even though this album isn't as widely loved as Five Leaves Left or Pink Moon, I think it's something very special. Introduction leading into Hazy Jane II is one of my favourite album openings and it never fails to make my heart swell.
If you’re like me and found out about Nick Drake through Pink Moon you’d probably be surprised hearing some of the more lavish arrangements found on this album. For example, Poor Boy features female backing vocals straight out of a soul song. But whereas you might think that such treatment would obscure the songwriting, it instead enhances it. The upbeat “Hazy Jane II”, drifting “One Of These Things First”, sublime “Northern Lights” and leisurely “Sunday” mark some of the best moments in his all too short career, not to mention every other song on the album
The excellent soft and careful vocals I remember from his debut, with a little extra spunk brought in from the fantastic ensemble of backing musicians. This sophomore album easily lives up to the debut.
Holy hell this is amazing, so soft and sensual, but somehow innocent as well.
Truly a sonic journey. Once again, you can hear how this influences future works from so many
I love his voice and the tone and style of this music. great album.
This is a masterpiece. So sad that he died so young. "Could've Been" has always been a favorite of mine.
My introduction to Nick Drake came from two of the songs from this album, which were on movie soundtrack albums I bought in the early 2000s. They have been favorite tracks ever since. It was wonderful to hear this whole album, which was a little less ethereal than Five Leaves Left, but no less beautiful.
As I listened, I tried to imagine how I would feel about Nick Drake if this was my first introduction to him. I honestly don't know if I would have loved the album. It is very relaxing, though. But having already fallen for Nick Drake and having listened to this album a few times in the past, I know that I love the album now.
I really enjoyed this album. It has lovely instrumentation, soothing lyrics. Nick Drake has a voice which blends but adds a lot of dimension to the musical arrangements. Now that I’ve listened to 2/3 of his albums, I can say that I’m a big fan. Favorite tracks: “Hazy Jane II,” “Poor Boy” and “Northern Sky.”
Beautiful
Initially I thought that Bryter Layter wasn't as good as Pink Moon which I got to listen to properly for the first time last week. I'm still giving it 5 stars as it is an amazing album. The problem I had was that I was so ready to compare the two which was my error. Where Pink Moon was Nick Drake's soul stripped bare this is his heart, with him trying to show the world his talent that we didn't get to experience for long. I can hear attempts to be commercially friendly, a little bit of Van Morrison, a taste of the Stones but this is very much Nick Drake. I really can see why he so revered now.
One of the best songwriters I had never checked out before I started this challenge.
I love his style, I’m a sucker for guitar, voice is very smooth. Perfectly executed. If this isn’t a 5 for me, I don’t know what is.
Wow. Loved this. Obvious comparisons with Belle & Sebastian, but wished I’d found this a long time ago. Play on repeat!
Mellow, folky, full of horns. Great Sunday morning album.
What a beautiful album. I love the arrangements, the way saxophone pops up in "at the chime of a city clock", the piano in "Poor Boy", the decision to start and end with an instrumental track. It all adds another dimension to his voice and song writing.
Nearly perfect. Nick's hardest rocking album but still poignant and lyrical and beautiful. 5 🌟
Lots of great sounds. Great integration of different musical styles into something original. Surprised it was made in 1978!
Very chill and upbeat vibe.
Absolutely beautiful album. I don't know what else to say. This has definitely been my favorite album so far.
Nick drake is one of the all time greats
Sublime. Sadly under-appreciated during his life.
This is hitting me just right. His voice is so sincere, so calming with tinges of melancholy, but a great sense of beauty and hope.
A truly beautiful album that I will return to & listen to many times. Northern Sky, Poor Boy & Hazy Jane are all outstanding
One of my absolute favourite albums. Near perfect.
Pretty pretty
Lovely, chilled out shops and bars
A classic Nick Drake album - it is perfect, goes beyond English Folk and clearly belongs to this list.
Heart-wrenchingly beautiful.
3 albums now 50yrs old. Each one mind blowing. An ephemeral talent never seen before or since.
Out of his 3 albums. This albums the most well rounded. Containing an actual backing band rather than Drake himself plus Orchestra/Drake just playing guitar (in reference to his debut and last album respectively).
This is really good. Great production. At first I didn't know about his singing style, but with the lush instrumentals and the vivid imagery in the lyrics, it all spins together into a really memorable experience.
5/5 - Excellent; Like a fore runner to James Taylor but more experimental; loved it
Soft and smooth without being uninteresting. Great album, completely new to me
Love the delicate and intricate instrumentation. (That acoustic guitar!👌🏽🤤) Nick Drakes vocals blend well with this style of music, but could be lacking in emotion/power? That flute goes hard on the title track Bryter Layter. The sax hits on Poor Boy. Northern sky is simply a wonderful track. Great album with a mysterious somber vibe.
First time listening Nick Drake. Very calming album. I am sad he didn’t get the recognition he deserved when he was alive. I will definitely listen his another albums and put my favorites on my playlists.
This album reaaaaally stuck with me, and is now on a regular repeat in my house.
YAY YAY YAY
love it
These are all gonna be 5 stars
Great way to start the week.
Love this one
One of my favourite albums that I don’t listen to enough. Every time I do put it on I wonder why that is. Maybe it’s a time and place sort of album? I remember it being one I’d listen to on long bus journeys through South America and it was perfect. Whilst walking through rush hour London, not so much. Anyway, such a rich album of sounds and melodies and his voice is so nice to just sit back and enjoy. A five star album if ever there was one.
Beautiful album, and I’d never heard of him before. Short, tragic life. Music that is ahead of his time. Some bossa nova influences
So perfect for what i needed
Pretty cool really like northern sky
Loved it, better than Pink Moon.
It's hard to imagine a better set of music in this genre. It isn't exactly my speed, at least at the beginning, but the execution captured me. It's human-scale music that reaches the infinite. The guitar operates as the heartbeat of the album, leaving space for jazzy elements which peak on Fly and Poor Boy.
Neil young vibe
While "Bryter Layter" sounds like a more upbeat album than Nick Drake's sparse debut, that is somewhat of a sonic illusion. On the surface, the listener is met with bright, elegant arrangements, yet Drake's lyrics still navigate heavy themes of isolation, confusion, and urban alienation. There is a beautiful, fluid smoothness to the entire record that makes it an incredibly easy listen, even when the underlying subject matter is dark. Drake's vocals, whilst remaining distinctive, are at their best on this album- particularly when compared to his other two records. His delivery here possesses a warmth and a quiet confidence that sound far less tentative than his earlier work. For an album that is now 55 years old, it has aged remarkably well. It completely avoided the production clichés of the era by relying almost entirely on acoustic instruments, warm bass lines, and elegant orchestral elements - consequently, it retains a fundamentally timeless quality. Overall Album Rating: 4/5 Side one 1 "Introduction" (4/5) 2 "Hazey Jane II" (4/5) 3 "At the Chime of a City Clock" (5/5) 4 "One of These Things First" (5/5) 5 "Hazey Jane I" (4/5) Side two 6 "Bryter Layter" (4/5) 7 "Fly" (3/5) 8 "Poor Boy" (4/5) 9 "Northern Sky" (4/5) 10 "Sunday" (3/5) Total - 41 Average - 4.1 375/1001 200/375 albums reviewed were new to me.
loved it, dont hear the pet sounds compairsons at all
Very chill opener that gives you an idea of the vibe he’s going for. Track two will get you moving. Some nice horns too. At the Chime has some smooth sax at one point that is great. And nice touches of strings too. One of These Things has fun lyrics that stick with me. And that piano works brilliantly with them. The first is solid but it’s hard to follow the second Hazey Jane. Another pretty instrumental but this one has an emphasis on flute. Fly continues the instrumentals that feel like something from the 18th century. Poor Boy uses group vocals at one point that is real cool. And cool is how I’d describe this track that feels jazz inspired. Nothern Sky uses what sounds like chimes of some sort that are gorgeous. The closer is another instrumental but at this point it worked the best because it’s like a credits roll moment.
very sweet, could definitely see this in a coming of age indie movie outro
I really enjoyed this, beautiful and elegant record
Lush orchestration. Just the right Kind of melancholy without being too heavy. Some latin influences and a great voice. Great record.
Nick Drake is one of the staples for the singer-songwriter template. This record, his second of three, is him stretching his wings in the studio. With big names like Richard Thompson and John Cale joining him, its no wonder his three albums have aged like wine. This, his second of only three albums he would record before his untimely death, has high points like One Of These Things First and Northern Sky.
This was another great surprise. Never sure what to expect when an album is classified as folk but this was a bit more varied in musical style than most other folk albums. Looking forward to more from him.
excellent 4.5-/5
beautiful album. really made me feel like i was floating. production was beautiful and simple.
Hazey Jane II At the Chime of a City Clock One of These Things First Fly Poor Boy Northern Sky
We’re back. And flat.
Gostei. Tema algums coisa leve na voz que deixa um tom suave ao final de cada frase. Achei as músicas um pouco repetitivas, poderia ter um pouco mais de variedade. Hazey Jane I foi a melhor.
Better than his first album for sure, decent. Will say there’s no reason to have 3 Nick Drake albums on the list though.
yeahhh
Beautiful
Orchestral, depressed and introverted, guitar and drums sound amazing. I think Pink Moon is a little better but it's good. Fly is amazing. John Cale on viola and harpsichord. Jazzy.
I’ve heard all three Nick Drake albums now and there are a lot of reasons why I’d pick this one as my favorite. He did get a little carried away with the accompaniments here but I think that’s the charm. All three records are notably different and it’s hard not to wonder what a fourth could have sounded like.
Great
Calm,relaxxing music!Very underrated artist.
Jazzier than expected, really good
Very lush and short but very good
dude... holy shit.... max comf
un poil inégal je trouve. mais globalement tres bien.
Hade inte alls koll på honom innan det här projektet men faktiskt toppen!
Behagligt.
I really enjoyed this! Kind of a chill vibe, nice background while reading, gardening, cooking whatever… some people commented on Drake's voice and said they did not like it, but I found it to be rather soothing. I really enjoy finding albums just like this which I never would have discovered otherwise.
2nd album of his so far only confirms I really enjoy him; even then, of the 2 it’s an easy 3.5 rounded up
Chamber Folk Favorite Songs: All but three Least Favorite Song: Hazy Jane I (And even then, it’s still a great song, but out of any of the other songs, I preferred this the least) Another pleasant surprise from this site. While I will fully admit that, for me, I have to re-listen to the album again because I had to get used to Nick’s voice, I did generally really love the lyrics of each of the songs. It’s a really relaxing album that you can unwind. 9/10
Top tier artist
Great album I don’t really have that much to say but it’s great. This is the kind of obscure stuff which I want.
I love this album, though it is probably the lowest of the three main Nick Drake albums compared to Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon. Highlights are: At the chime of a city clock, Northern Sky, One of These things first.
Super warm sounding. Pleasant without being boring. Definitely want to listen to this again with headphones in the future.
5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background
Ah my beautiful little baby boy, my babe gone too soon my baby
Beautiful and creative, not my favourite Nick Drake album (I expect to see Pink Moon on this list somewhere) but a glorious record nonetheless. 4.5
1) At the chime of a city clock 2) northern sky 3) poor boy
Spændende lyd som altid. Man er virkelig ikke i tvivl. Sing-a-soul-song-jazz.
Instrumenteringen fremstår lysere og mere opløftende end på Five Leaves Left. Men Drakes vokal er stadig lige så melankolsk som altid.
I loved Nick Drake's voice and delivery but the album's production was kind of getting in the way and wasn't exactly suitable for him. I would have done away with the sax, flute, strings and background singers as well as the instrumental numbers. Less would have been more in this case but it was still an enjoyable album.
Not as good as Pink Moon but still very good
TBH after listening to this, it feels really calming, like my brains is finally breathing in a grassland, under a bright sunshine, talking to the winds, smiling again. And this is genuinely not an exaggeration, I genuinely mean it. Listen it in a mid to above mid (75%) volume and start from the introduction, you may also feel it...
Really nice, peaceful, sounded good, nice songwriting.
Better than Coldplay
this was such a pleasant listen, i'm glad to this project for introducing me to yet another artist that's right up my alley. he's giving me Jeff Buckley vibes
It’s a good album, hard to believe Kendrick beat him
Definitely one you have to listen through a few times. Liked it the more I listened. I like the atmosphere it creates. Would be a dope vinyl. The standout factor to me is definitely the backing instruments. Sounds like the score to a lord of the rings movie or something. I’m familiar with this style, and he’s got something strange, mysterious, maybe a little dark to add to it. Like I said, wasn’t all that sure the first time through, but it got better the more it played. Realistically probably like a 3.5-3.75, but I’ll go four.
Slow, but good.
Nick Drake was a genius. This isn't as good as Pink Moon or Five Leaves Left, I do think the backing instrumentation, while brilliant, ruins the sparse beauty of Nick's voice. It just feels too full. If this was mixed into just him and his instrumentation, it would be another 5, but it just doesn't touch the same sides as his other work.
Stone cold
i love you nick drake.
A good album with intricate arrangements, I fancy the acoustic guitar parts that often take strange directions. Although a little bit repetetive when you come to the end of the album.
i really enjoyed this album but i don't know if it's super distinctive. I listened to it and it really faded into the background. I liked it but it wasn't anything other than just nice sounds.
It was certainly quite pleasant. A little bit elevator music, but pleasant elevator music.
Great flow and consistent style without becoming repetitive. Gently moody in a very pleasant way. Highlights: "One of These Things First", "Hazey Jane I", "Northern Sky"
Smooth, acoustic, unique tone, really good.
Familiar with Nick Drake through his song "Pink Moon" though I never sat down and listened to his other work. First Listen, I'm not a folk lover as it tends to be music I don't normally seek out however, there are many instances where the genre completely has me locked-in! This album does that. Highlight of the album, Bryter Layter is a track with no vocals but filled with "atmospheric traveling vibes" or something inviting a space to be imagined from the listener. Its exactly what I love to see in the folk genre. The track Sunday also shares this vibe. Appreciate both greatly. ATCOACC, the small pauses and saxophone with the supporting string-arrangements (I don't know the instrument making that elegant sound is) was almost my favourite. Overall, I feel bad for Nick Drake. Too young, lost, and confused. Before listening to this album I didn't know anything about the musician. The history behind the album is interesting but all relating back to his struggles with mental-health issues. Its tragic but the album was imaginative for me which is something I will always appreciate. T3: Bryter Layter, ATCOACC, OOTTF
Very whimsical & interesting sounds
It's cool, but it makes me a bit sleepy. Stand-outs - Hazey Jane II - Northern Sky
I remember checking out ‘Pink Moon’ years ago and being mostly bored by it, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Maybe I’m just in more of a Nick Drake time in my life right now, I don’t know.
It’s been a long time since I listened to this straight through. I was surprised by how much late-stage Belle and Sebastian sounds like “Hazey Jane II;” my brain was expecting Stuart Murdoch to start singing there. Nick Drake made some of the flat-out prettiest music ever. The piano and guitar interplay on “One Of These Things First” is beautiful stuff with his voice floating over it all. John Cale absolutely nails the assignment on “Northern Sky,” which I had on repeat for a while a few years back. He plays with tasteful restraint and that piano part is a highlight of the album. 4.5
Absolutely beautiful. Had never heard of this artist and did a deep drive into his sad, short life but how incredible to have left behind this art. His voice takes you places and the album as a whole feels ahead of its time, it doesn’t feel like it was recorded in the 70s. The accompaniments really pull it all together. At The Chime of a City Clock is so dreamy.
OK, las dos primeras canciones las amé. Creo yo que Jane Dos está muy Cool very smooth to listen. hazel 1 sounds nice in the beginning poor boy also cool. northern star and sunday are very sweet and harmonious. 4/5 4.6/5
pleasantly surprised. ended up listening to this one twice. simple yet touching
Choosing my favourite Nick Drake is like choosing my favourite child. Adore this album so deeply. The instrumentation is so rich and delicious. The trumpets are so cute and the piano is such a strong accompaniment. The production and instrumentation are so lush compared to Pink Moon that it makes me wish we could have heard what the original plans for that album could have sounded like. Pink Moon certainly has better songs, but the lushness of this record means that I struggle to choose between the two. I will continue to listen to this every week, as I have since I first heard it. Standout Tracks: At The Chime Of A City Clock, One Of These Things First, Bryter Layter, Poor Boy Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️
I really enjoy Nick Drake. So tragic to have lost this great talent so soon.
great listen for a mellow mood. 4//5
I still really prefer Pink Moon over this. But I can't fault Nick's talent and abilities. Like the first Nick Drake album, this one has been somewhat overtaken by producer-arrangers. There are some really beautiful pieces here. I think his music just sounds best stripped down. Still, I can't deny that Nick's ability to create a mood is amazing.
Good ND album. I bet I like his others better but there are some classic singles on this one.
This is more upbeat than I was expecting from Nick Drake, a name I have known for ages but never got around to checking out until now. Very pretty and enticing musical arrangements, with expressive haunting vocals that almost foreshadow his early death through its timbre. 30% instrumental tracks is probably too many instrumental tracks for a ten song album, even though they were pretty. Very good listen.
I don't just want to give all the 70s singer/songwriters high grades, but they keep being appealing to me. Pink Moon is the seminal album, but this one is a bit easier. Feeling a 4.
Huh, this is right up my alley. Inspiration for many contemporary artists I like. Melancholy. I dig it. Between Nick Drake, Neil Young, and Fiona Apple, 1001 Albums has been good for supplying with with enjoyable melancholy folk artists.
dreamy, melodic, light-hearted with a touch of sadness, it's music for someone's AO3 coffeeshop AU, except no one there is old enough to remember this album, only stumble upon it via spotify shuffle.
Nick Drake ranks among the best singer/songwriters of his day. My favorite tracks: "One of These Things First" (catchy and fun), "Poor Boy" (the piano solo is awesome), "Northern Sky" (great wedding song).
I have never heard of Nick Drake, so I'm more than happy to find out about him. Beautiful arrangements, moving so many feelings with ease.
What I love most about this record is how much it sounds like the evening, the Jazzy influence is such a beauty when mixed with Drakes acoustic playing. It reminds me a bit of Solid air but this record does the atmospheric sound better in my opinion. I also really enjoyed the lyrical content of this album after my first listen I was thinking back on some of the things that were said. Fav tracks: Hazey Jane II and I, One of these things First, Fly, Poor boy, Northern sky, Sunday
The album is great with jazz pop like production which is very confusing because the music sounds is very warm and bright but the lyrics is very deep exploring the the friction between his hopeful expectations and reality. as an album it is a very beautiful but it has one problem all the album typically sounds like the same song . I do recommend a listen 😃
Surprisingly very good for someone who doesn't typically like folk. Drake has a unique voice that is quite beautiful. It took a little bit to get into the album but the second half in particular is fantastic (from Bryter Layter). Also all the instrumentation is excellent.
Another great find. Beautiful music.
I found myself comparing this album to a beach. I sit on the sand and acknowledge how beautiful the ocean looks but there’s something in me keeping me from swimming and I’m okay with that. I’ll appreciate it from afar despite never knowing how cold the water is, how the force of the waves feel on my skin, or if there’s a jellyfish waiting to sting me. Some albums are sideline albums
Genuinely a beautiful album, and my first Nick Drake album. Someone I've known about for a while but haven't really check out until today. Very glad that I did.
Talk about an amazing talent that we didn’t get enough music from. I never really listened to this one but shows that he really had a range and was going in a Joni Mitchell direction with orchestrations/more overt jazz influences in his music. Will likely be a five star one day with time .
I do like this music. Very slow and sort of mellow but the guitar is just excellent.
This project loves Nick Drake. I always love specific Nick Drake songs, but never love the whole record. This one, however, was a little more interesting. I liked the kind of orchestra take and elements he adds to each song. Obviously, One of These Things is the true winner of the record. I listen to that and feel like I’m walking around NYC as the central figure of a 2000s indie movie. Nick Drake has one of the most unique styles of song writing, guitar playing and singing. I really love how he added jazz and soul throughout this one.
真的,他的嗓音听起来就是那种帅哥,而且有内涵有文化。音乐不华丽不复杂,但很有特色不俗套,这才是民谣
Classic record from the late and great Nick Drake. Makes me want to go and live in the country, be a detectorist and drink real ale whilst eating pork scratching - wait I do that already! Rest in peace x
I love nick drake - everything he’s created is so delicate and beautiful. This album included ofc. It’s so difficult to distinguish between which albums I like the most because they’re all amazing but in their own very subtly different ways. This album feels a little more happy than pink moon but less than five leaves left. Fav songs: one of these things first, northern sky
So relaxing. I listened to this a day late but it worked out since this is the perfect Sunday song. Favorite track: At The Chime Of A City Clock
Nice soothing album to listen to on my birthday. Funny that I’ve never heard of Nick Drake and I get two of his albums in a two week span
Love the use of strings on several of these tracks. Really gorgeous album.
5 stars
מרגיש לי שאני צריך להאזין שוב לאלבום בשביל להקשיב למילים מוזיקה נהדרת יחסית למישהו שפחות בקטע של פולק. Poor boy - אחלה שיר ג'אז
Not familiar enough with his first album but I prefer this one over Pink Moon, which I also really like. This one just has a better feel to it, not so dark and moody. I love the orchestral sound mixed with his guitar playing and jazz elements. And the songwriting is just as stellar.
Actually really enjoyed the instrumental work, probably shouldn’t get this high of a rating but I actually kind of messed with it.
some songs with excellent guitar and overlay violins. Some songs definitely dated the early 70s. Overall, most songs were a good listen.
não conhecia o enzo kaique britânico. dito isso, muito bom o álbum vou ouvir mais vezes com certeza.
4.5
I don't totally vibe with his way of singing, but the music is very pleasant to listen to, cannot hate.
Very enjoyable listen
time to go listen to pink moon ig. 4.5
Not a name I recognized much, but this was a gem. I was glad to be reminded of "One of These Things First," because I love that song. His voice is very soothing and goes well with the instrumentation. I like how the percussion is laidback and sparse ( if there's a snare it's always a rim shot); it makes room for the rich strings and his soft voice.
probably my favorite Nick Drake album to date. i actually really enjoyed this one. its not as broody as other albums, and i felt like there was some really sweet melodies.
I’m really glad we got another Nick Drake album even if it was over two years later. He’s so calming and has such a chill vibe. This isn’t quite a five star album but I think it’s a strong four. Everyone should give Nick Drank a listen.
This is jazzy, and not the kind of jazzy your aunt uses to describe your new sweater get. This has some serious influence that’s fused with traditional acoustic rock in a way that’s really groovy and smooth. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Chill
I didn't think I'd heard any Nick Drake before, but listening to BRYTER LAYTER, I realized I must've heard some of these songs in the movies. (Really, the entire album sounds like it could be a soundtrack for a Wes Anderson movie.) Sure enough, I know "One Of These Things First" very well; it's on what may be the best pop-music soundtrack of the 21st century GARDEN STATE (2004). And "Fly" appears in a Wes Anderson movie, of course. How much I loved this album caught me off-guard. I had to listen to it several times before writing this review, and it just keeps growing on me. I really hadn't expected to know or love any of this. It probably helps that the backing band is mostly Fairport Convention, a band I"m somewhat familiar with but very familiar with what their members did later: Richard Thompson is one of my favorite singer-songwriters (and one of the three best guitarists I've very seen live) and Fairport's drummer, Dave Mattacks, played on XTC albums. The album is beautifully produced. What a pleasant surprise.
Great to listen to while working.
Introduction Hazey Jane II One of These Things First Poor Boy
Nick Drake sounds best by himself
When I first listened to Pink Moon, I thought it was fine but I didn't quite understand why everyone was so enamored with it so I hadn't listened to any of his other albums before getting assigned this one. I really liked this album so now I think I need to revisit Pink Moon. I'm older and wiser now, perhaps I'll understand it more. Bryter Layter gets a 4.5/5.
Really enjoyed this as opposed to his follow up album, the melancholy vocals pair well with the backing band and create an easy going but emotionally painful atmosphere. I feel like the majority of the songs could slot into my life at various points and help process things and that makes this a super strong album for me personally. No duds in the bunch but I grew to love, Hazey Jane II, At The Chime Of A City Clock (Sax is great here), One of These Things First (Saved), Poor Boy and Northern Sky.
Like many I was enamored of the song Pink Moon when it was featured in a Volkswagen commercial back in the day which led me to get his greatest hits album although that’s not how I usually like to approach material from an artist new to me. Listening to this album is a perfect example of why it’s a bad idea. The greatest hits album although good was uneven and as I remember tended toward the maudlin. This album on the other hand is a solid piece of art. Not only are the songs good, interesting and not mopey, they’re unique though thematically akin, the arrangements are beautiful, there are repeated themes, and I love that it is bookended by instrumental orchestra pieces to give the experience some structure. Very well done.
hoy la verdad no tengo ganas de pensar
Very somber, and folk like with dark undertones. Melancholic beauty.
Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Near Perfect - Instantly this album draws you into a comfy, pretty world of soft colour and sound. This is easily the most upbeat and fun album of his, I love the jazzy touches. The whole thing is great but the real highlights are Hazey Jane II, At The Chime Of A City Clock and Northern Sky. Beautiful album.
Hyvä levy. 3,5/5.
i liked this one. nice acoustic folk. little jazzy
Love some alt folk, I enjoyed the earlier album from Nick drake, but this one was also great. Will reward on re listens, but that early 70s production was wonderful.
Nick Drake has slowly grown on me since listen to his other albums last year.
There’s a gentleness to Nick Drake’s guitar playing—the soft sound of finger pads picking strings, so much gentler than a pick. What’s incredible is that he sings with the vocal equivalent. His voice is gentle, he approaches every consonant as if caressing with his thumb pad, not striking with a pick. “One of These Things First” was a revelation when my spouse first played it for me a few years back. He somehow sounds out of time. I prefer the sparser arrangements of Pink Moon, but Bryter Layter is an excellent collection of songs.
es muuuyy muy chill y algunas canciones son solo instrumentales. no le doy 5 estrellas porq algunos temas se me hicieron un poquito largos pero en general es muy lindo album
Nick Drake was a genius. His guitar tunings were nothing short of spectacular.
Way better than I anticipated. Would listen again.
decent 8
Good chill vibe nice instrumental Sunday morning 8:00 am type of tracks safe aux songs beautiful melodic probably not for everyday listen but can have it’s occasions. 8.4
Nick drake da goat no cap. I can tell there was an attempt at more pop appeal than Pink moon. I think he did better being more experimental and technical. Still nice to hear all of the layers and elements.
I loved this. I’m more familiar with Pink Moon, but I really dig the fuller, orchestral sound to this album. 4/5
Saved? ✅ Would listen again? ✅ Would recommend to anyone? ✅ Would buy on Vinyl? ✅
Just like Nick Drake's other only two albums here it has very playful melodies, introspective lyrics, intricate guitar playing and lush arrangements (except for Pink moon; still worth mentioning because 66% of discog. is like this.) I particularly like the arrangements in the songs "Hazey Jane II", "One Of These Things First" and "Bryter Layer." I found that a second listen helped my opinion of this album (as one might expect.) this is also my first Nick Drake album where I didn't experience for a first time without the holy generator, because why not. I definitely think Pink Moon is better than this because sometimes there has to be a favourite, but his catalog is still pretty killer, he didn't seem to miss a lot. Doesn't mean that this is a 'bad' album. Highlight Song/s: "Hazey Jane II", "Hazey Jane I" and "Poor Boy"
I’ve not listened to Nick drake before and will definitely go and listen to more now. This process has been great for pointing out blind spots from 60s,70s and 80s albums for me. Even if there’s some trash on here too.
Although this is an excellent album, I feel that the strings and other baroque trappings go over the top overall. Pink Moon is cleaner overall.
- i love this guy's voice!! he sings parasite, one of my fav acoustic songs - beautiful acoustic/strings instrumental introduction :) - good pace, very versatile and listenable! can be great for active listening or upbeat background noise - bonus points for a cool album cover - gorgeous combination between smooth, gentle acoustics and bright tangy brass!! that's hard to pull of imo but it works so well here - would be a 5/5 if it had replayability for me. nothing wrong with it, its not quite the flavor of music i enjoy listening to regularly. it's lovely otherwise
Just good vibes. The truth is I don't have much to say but I really like how it sounds, in general there is no song from this album that I dislike
Until I decided to do this 1001 albums list, I knew little about Nick Drake. Then, I listened to Five Leaves Left - and it was a bit of a discovery. Then, I discovered Radio Paradise - The Mellow Mix, which is fabulous but it's a lot of Nick Drake... so the novelty has worn off a bit for me. And I like the more naked instrumentation better than this album with lots of guests and lost of musical layers. Still, very good folky song writing. I'll be generous and give it a four.
I love Nick Drake’s crooning, quiet voice! Instrumentation was quiet and calm, but complimented his emotional lyrics. This album was so great!
Pretty chill record. Bryter Layter, Fly and especially poor boy stood out to me.
no de mi agrado
Tosi chilli levy. Rauhallista ja hyvän kuullosta settiä koko levy.
55# One of my favorite albums of all time is from Nick Drake, Pink Moon. But shamefully so, i never sat down to hear this one. Its nice to kinda be obliged to do it. Tender in the most depressing way. Beautiful besides all the sadness.
I always mess up Nick Drake with Nick Cave... Nick Drake is a LOT better.
Nick Drake is one of those artists who didn't really see much in the way of mainstream success during his lifetime, but has posthumously become absolutely revered by many artists, particularly those in the indie and folk scenes, as one of the greatest musicians who ever lived. Admittedly, I wasn't even familiar with him until fairly recently. 'Bryter Layter' is Nick Drake's second album and is seen by many as his best (at least I think so, this seems to be the one that gets mentioned a lot and that even Boris paid homage to with one of their album covers). Musically, while this is definitely a folk album, it's not folk music like in the nature of artists like Bob Dylan or Donovan. This album, while being very gentle and calming in nature, doesn't necessarily sound like it's stripped down like you might expect in folk music. Drake has a full band backing him up, which included members of Fairport Convention, John Cale of Velvet Underground fame, and a couple of Beach Boys session musicians. And the music has a definite progressive sound to it, particularly in songs like the jazzy "Poor Boy" and instrumentals like "Sunday" and the title track, both of which have a bit of that baroque pop sound to them, not unlike what the Kinks were starting to get into on some of their mid to late 60's albums. By far the best known song on the album is "Northern Sky", which I believe was the song that helped people gain a renewed interest in Drake's music in the 80's.
He sounds like Seal! Happy music, I liked it!
i'm learning that i enjoy 60s/70s folk rock more than i expected to. this is likely more of a 3.5 than a 4 but giving it a 3 would feel too harsh
Best Song: One of these Things First I had never heard of Nick Drake before this. I enjoyed it. To me, this is the definition of easy listening and probably am the only one who would categorize this as such, but that is what it sounded like to me. 4/5.
Haunting and beautifully arranged. Very interesting guitarwork.
Very slow paced comforting songs. Felt like I'm in an old painting where there are flutes and other handmade instruments playing and the guitar is standing out. Such a shame that he didn't get the fame.
Sounds of a swell spring evening
Bryter Layter and Hazey Jane 1 are very cool songs. Never heard of this album, it's kinda sound more than a 1970 album
Totally into early 70s these days. Keep em coming!
Wow, I wasn’t familiar with Nick drake before this, great discovery for me. 4 stars. Some parts remind me a ton of belle and sebastian
Yup. Sweet and elegant. A genius before anyone new he was gone.
I liked it
A morning album, really great!
amazing album
interesting but not quite my thing. i like the jazzier portions best. drake has a beautiful voice though
Great folk album, great vibe to it. Hazey Jane I was my fav song and first listen of the album with One Of These Things First and Hazey Jane II being my other highlights
What a gem. Lovely album. Singer songwriter writer classic
thank god for nick drake. i knew northern sky already, but i hadn't ever heard this album in full. i think my favourites are northern sky, hazey jane ii and fly. overall rating? unsure, but for the genre he's in i think he's one of the best at what he does. i say again, thank god for nick drake. i am sorry you were never appreciated in your time.
My Grandma had all his CDs, bless her heart. Introduction's string swells are greatly graceful. I like the drummer's galloping beat and fills on Hazey Jane II. I'm a sucker for descending and somber sounding riffs followed by uplifting and sunny sounding song sections like on At The Chime of a City Clock, guitar work incredible on this one, and did I mention it features a saxophone?! One of These Things First dealing lyrically with identity, it's resonant with me in these times. Nice Bossa nova beat and arpeggios. Bryter Layter's central riff reminds me of the Disney Pixar Cars game main theme for the Xbox360. Fly sounds a bit baroque, hmm, I wonder what instrument makes it sound that way... A steady mambo beat sits patiently in the sidelines on Poor Boy, interesting the Latin inspirations throughout this record, for it's time I'd imagine that to be revolutionary. Northern Sky has this short but sweet piano part before the second verse that feels like when the sun peers through a gap in a thin gray cloud on a soggy afternoon with an almost blinding, white light across a plain, grassy field that in a nano-second, renders the already calm and tepid air to a warm blanket that consoles the outer layer, this song speaks of the seasons and love with intrepid curiosity. Sunday is an alright closing instrumental and gently sets the baby down in it's cradle. Plenty of instrumentation to pay attention to, it can become a meditative and engaging process to focus on one set of sounds or a calming background to contrast life's daily chaos. That's right, this album has me waxing poetic. This record is going to make me cry at some point in life, I just know it.
Some really nice tracks, made my morning listening to this. Some of the tracks weren't for me, but they weren't horrendous. More the arrangement on them wasn't entirely necessary. His vocals and guitars were superb throughout, it would've been five stars in some of the jazz elements on a few songs were stripped back.
very airy, light, mixes folk influences with a weightless voice. heavy acoustic guitar. somber and quiet
One of my favorite albums from the project so far! I finally truly connected with this record. Faves are Introduction, and Hazy Jane I and II
Incredible record. I never knew or even heard about this artist. But he was amazing. A truly haunting record. A real hidden gem for me.
"Bryter Layter" ventures into chamber folk, and at times feels like it lacks the intimacy of Drake's other works. The added backing instruments however don't quite remove the mystical, haunting quality of Drake's work; take the jazz-infused "Poor Boy" with its rhythmic comping and its gospel-infused choir, or the ponderous flute of "Sunday", for instance. It is this that makes Drake's work so appealing.
one of these things first sounds like something that would be in curious george very calm album but I loved it favorite song: hazey jane ii
246/1001 Nick Drake - Bryter Layter Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ It's between this and Pink Moon as to which is my favourite Drake album. This one has far more arrangements that adds to the the depth of the sound. Drake is on point lyrically here. I will say, I would have preferred two more songs rather than the instrumentals we got.
I get this one, I don't get Nick Drake yet, but I get this album
Lovely pastoral sounds.
Crazy how I’d never heard of this guy before the generator
I listened to this album twice. While there's the prevalent feeling of melancholy throughout Drake's voice skips and drifts. This album deserves more listening.
