Reviews (page 7 of 14)
I can see a lot of the bits that would come together in Pink Moon. Maybe if i had heard this first, I would have liked it better. It's still very good. I just think Pink Moon is better.
Another Nick Drake album to remind me I need to listen to Nick Drake more. It's good, I liked it a lot. This is one of those albums that, if I listened to it more, might get bumped to a 5, but I'm not quite there yet. I know I've heard some of these songs (One of these Things First, most likely) on a soundtrack of a movie I've watched a 100 times, but I can't place which one, which is driving me a little crazy!
What a gem, so beautiful
I'd never heard of Nick Drake until starting this process, and this is the 2nd album of his I've had Really enjoyed this one! Nice chill music, and upbeat 4 ⭐️
I might have listened to this once or twice. Beautiful, wistful music which is at times depressing. "I could have been One of these things first"
I continue to really like Nick Drake’s music. I’m glad this site turned me on to his albums
Been a fan of nick drake for a long time. One of these things first is one of my favourite of his and the album is great. I probably prefer Pink Moon but this is a great record.
First Nick drake album. Great voice. Suits his style of music well. I like the finger picking style of his playing. Not a bad album. I feel pretty neutral about this one. Didnt love it. Didnt hate it. Could be a grower. So I came back to this album whilst in the kitchen. Nicks style Of music is consistent but it’s definitely a grower. I ended up enjoying the album. Even the missus complimented it!
Nice songs. I quite like this guys songs.
ethereal
Divine, beautiful, looooooooove this quirky lil guy. Makes me think of my sweet trip back into society with David when he first introduced me to ole Nicky. Gettin me back in that sweeeet sweet mindset of not giving an absolute single fuck while also caring so deeply at the same time. Putting on my cantstandtogiveanotherfuck helmet again rn as we speak, it's covered in thorny roses but also rainbows and smiles.
Super pretty, loved the arrangements and Nicks vocals are perfect. Not quite as memorable or meaningful as his other record I’ve heard, Pink Moon, but it’s still pretty good. 7/10
Beautiful album, could rock a baby to sleep to these songs. The lyrics and vocals are great but it's the instrumentals that shine the most I feel, great playing (especially the keys) and beautifully produced. 'One Of These Things First' and 'Poor Boy' were my favourites here, those songs are both stunning.
I really wasn’t too keen on Pink Moon upon first listen a few months ago, so I’m super surprised by how much a love Bryter Layter. The sound on this one is so full and lush, with lots of instrumentation including strings and sax (huge win for me). Just all around really beautiful. 4.5
Very nice. Not as nice as the moon one. Will be returning to catalog.
damn good
I did not listen to Nick Drake before. I will listen to him going forward.
Incredibly relaxing and pleasant listen.
I enjoy Nick Drakes mellow and calm sounds.
Beautiful, melancholy Britfolk. I have a limited appetite for Britfolk, but this suits me well. I can't decide if this is better played in the morning or as the night's closer, but it's deep, introspective, and definitely worth a listen.
Soulful, bluesy, chill. This is a really nice record that I wasn’t familiar with before, nor the artist. Elements of folk, rock, blues. It’s enchanting and mystical, capturing a sound that seems much older than it is. Very easy on the ears and mind. Will revisit this one in the future.
I liked this quite a bit
Beautiful songs but the production is unnecessary.
I’m usually not into folk music but Nick Drake is absolutely wonderful. There’s something haunting about his albums knowing now what he was going through and his eventual death and that always seems to be the undercurrent of his music that adds a layer of depth to it all. Nick Drake is what turned me on to folk music and finally get it as a genre.
pretty chill, 3.5/5
3.5 rating for me. Need to listen again.
I know this is an excellent album. There is something special about it, and his so sweet but sad legacy. Would I listen to it a lot. Probably not. Would I return to it when the mood is upon me. Yes. Would that mood visit me often? Unlikely. Let's call it a treasure to access on rare occasions. Thanks for the discovery. A surprisingly awesome little gem. 4 stars.
This was good for sad, folk music.
Pretty good. Easy to listen to. Some of the songs feel like they'd be played at like Olive Garden tho
kinda van morrison ish. chill. nice compositions
I gave this a 5 before and looking back was over generous, but it's a 4.
listened to this while cooking and was v good, has a nice sound to it. 8/10
Chill, enjoyable listen. Kinda breathy but I guess that’s just the style. 7/10
8/10 - I started off against it but as the album went on it grew quite a bit. I was cleaning during this album so it was surprising to me how much I enjoyed it. one of these things first was probably the best song
4.5/5. The biggest what if in music history.
Beautiful folk music, understated but ornate. This album is more adorned than the Nick Drake stuff I'm familiar with. It's a shame he passed so young. "Would you love me through the winter?/Would you love me 'til I'm dead?" Highlights: Hazey Jane II, One Of These Things First, Poor Boy, Northern Sky, Sunday
Really chill. Best song: Poor Boy.
My last run in with Mr Drake I really liked what I heard. I felt his heart and soul with every single song. With every lyric. This is an earlier release and it's still damn good. I really really liked the song Northern Sky. It was god damn beautiful. Nick Drake continues to make me appreciate his music. It's such a tragedy we didn't get more of his music.
I did not know of Nick Drake prior to getting this album, but now I'm interested in learning more about this fellow. Immediately it's easy to tell that he was a talented songwriter. A quick Google search tells me that Mr. Drake battled depression and was unfortunately not on this Earth for long. The melancholy and loneliness seeps through in this album specifically but if you zoom out, you're also entranced by the easy-going, folksy-jazz sound heard throughout. I can only assume his other work is just as (instrumentally) pleasing to listen to.
What a beautiful, sad, emotional album from Nick Drake. Some of these songs really resonated with me and had me thinking of myself and where I'm at, not too many albums have me doing that. Fav songs: - Hazey Jane II - At The Chime of a City Clock - One of These Things First - Hazey Jane I - Northern Sky
I really enjoyed this album. I'm learning I have a soft spot in my heart for English folk singers. Relevance to this list: 3/5 Personal enjoyment: 4/5
i like this one so far
Sad. Frábær plata.
Svakalega flott plata og góð vinnutónlist. Northern sky er með fallegri lögum. Sorglegt að hann skyldi ekki fá að lifa öll hrósin sem tónlist hans á skilið.
Nick Drake helped me define my definition of what's "Cool". He set a standard for what artistry could be.
did not have high hopes for this album but i stand corrected
Cool, dark, smooth, and really mellow. I liked everything here. Four stars.
Bryter Layter is a great demonstration of Nick Drake's ability as a singer-songwriter, from melancholic tracks such as "At The Chime of a City Clock" to the very sweet and endearing "Northern Sky." The backing instruments, ranging from strings, flute, and saxophone, help to add texture to these tracks while still maintaining a folk flair that is very much distant to Nick Drake, even if some of these tracks without vocals I could live without.
I don't have much to say about this one. It was nice, it was relaxing. Favorite song: Poor Boy
The second album I was served up on this 1,001 album listening journey was Nick Drake's debut album, Five Leaves Left. I was blown away. Fitting that 56 albums later, I get the second in his three-album discography, Bryter Layter. This album contains some new, more upbeat songs compared to Five Leaves Left, including Hazey Jane II, that has a positive, uptempo rhythm that reminded me of the backing drums for Dire Straits' Sultans of Swing. I had never heard this song and dug it. The string arrangements here are lush and the brass instruments clearly present, but don't overpower Drake and his expert fingerpicking. This album didn't hit me as forcefully as Drake's debut did as a whole so it gets a 4 stars from me rather than the 5 I gave to Five Leaves Left. But Bryter Layter still a definite masterpiece. 4 stars: I am struck by this album. Interesting Factoids from Wikipedia: *Arranger Robert Kirby says that Drake intended the instrumentals to evoke (the Beach Boys') Pet Sounds. *The guitar Drake holds on the album cover is owned by Nick Laird-Clowes of The Dream Academy, whose "Life in a Northern Town" was written as an elegy to Drake. Standout Tracks: Hazey Jane II, One of These Things First, Fly, Poor Boy, Northern Sky
Liked this a lot.
Picture this it was Sunday morning. The first sunny day of the year. Driving towards the Forrest to do a hike. slightly hangover but just good enough. Listening to this album and just floating in good vibes. Didn't know it but really liked it!
It’s sad to think that “Bryter Layter” didn’t apply to Nick Drake’s short life. His deep voice and melancholy of his music would suggest someone much older, not a young man that wouldn’t live to see age 30. Although this album is beautiful, it’s still quite somber, which means it isn’t one I’ll want to put on repeat. But on its merits, I’d go 3.5 to 4/5.
Nick Drake is an artist I have heard here and there but have yet to really sit and listen to. I always enjoy hearing his soft smooth songs. I've never listened to this whole album but I love One of These Things First. Hazey Jane II is a cool song. The trumpet is strange for a Nick Drake song. The song itself is strange for a Nick Drake song but damn I bet you could put his voice and lyrics against any form of music and it would elevate it. At the Chime of a City Clock... Wow. How depressing in the best way. Beautiful. One of These Things First is probably the hit everyone hears. The lyrics are so symbolic in this song, but simple enough to easily apply meaning. I even enjoyed the instrumental compositions. Interesting to note that John Cale of The Velvet Underground played on this with members of Fairport Convention. I was sad to learn that Nick Drake overdosed on anti-depressants and died at 26. His music and voice seems so much more mature than that. Maybe he felt older than he was. This is a beautiful album and Drake's voice, lyrics, and compositions have stood the test of time and managed to resonate with generations of people who weren't even alive when he was. He might have hated that, though. Who knows.
Love me some Nick Drake. I think Pink Moon is his best album, but this is quite good. Sad to have lost him so young.
Mooi, leuk album!
Good nature trip album
Beautifully melancholy.
Þessi nístir í hjartað að svo mörgu leyti, þrátt fyrir að vera ekki alveg eins mikið "haust" og hinar plöturnar hans. Ofboðslega gott stöff.
I have always found Nick Drake easy to listen to…although the music doesn’t suit all moods, it is lovely 4.5
Chill, cool guitar music
Ok yeah she’s kinda nice. Good vibes. This the type of music I enjoy lots
I want Nick Drake to tuck me in at night and read me a bedtime story
He would have loved Julien Baker
Nick drake = nickleback + drake
Varsin tyylikäs! 4/5
olipa hallittu ja vähäeleinen. 4/5
Very nostalgic, I liked it quite a bit
Yes
Drake ist Drake.
It's folky which isn't usually my jam, but there's enough jazzy stuff going on for me to forgive it. What a lovely listen. Now I feel bad that my first experience with his music was Fontaines DC covering Cello Song. 4/5. Looking forward to the rest of his stuff.
Was decently surprised by this album. Good guitar parts, harmonies, and solid vocals to boot. I dig it.
So good - I still feel like Nick Drake is at his best on less heavily arranged/produced tracks - not sure I like this album more than Pink Moon but it's great.
Lovely, beautiful! Stunning album. Gives me all the Sunday afternoon red wine vibes! Which is exactly when I’ll listen to it! Not sure it will get much play outside of that - but doesn’t take away from how lovely it is! 3.7
lovely!!!
Much more vibrant and lively then his final release pink moon, lovely use of brass instrumentation, nicks soft acoustic tones and careful vocals
Second album I’ve had by Nick Drake, and I really enjoyed it.
1970s British Folk Rock, it’s giving Beatles but less poppy. Interesting because today I feel like this would be called folk or indie and not at all called rock. I liked the instrumentals a lot. Especially the last track with the flute. Its great music for just a calm mellow vibe. One song through, slow Jane, I’m like: is he being misogynistic?? The lyrics are kinda fun to analyze.
Love this album, found by chance many years ago after hearing Northern Sky on a folk compilation
Didn’t know what to expect, nice and relaxing
Another Nick Drake masterpiece. It’s the second of his albums I’ve had here, it hit me in the same way Five Leaves Left did. I really dig this guy.
Haven’t listened to this one in a long time but I have the CD somewhere.
I liked this album. Exactly what I needed on an extremely stressful day (and commute).
Easy listening. Really grows on you.
Got into this and pink moon just a couple years ago, some other artist (i thought it was colin greenwood but couldnt find it) mentioned nick drake and this album in particular as a huge influence. This album drops my heartrate, i love it. You get these great straightforward seeming folk tracks but all of the sudden you're on these jazzy tangents and horns and keys show up. Plus breezily contemplative lyrics that invite you to just slow down your brain a bit.
I like the John Cale influence and the layered acoustic songs.
Beautiful listen for a spring morning. The unexpected jazzy piano, string arrangements, and flowing flute parts really caught me off guard. Enjoyed it a lot. Would buy on vinyl.
Ok so this album was actually one of the first I didn't struggle to get through. Drake's soft voice and acoustic accompany made this a very easy listen. There was some sexy flutes and trumpets in this album that I thought were wonderful. Very sad that Drake's life ended so soon and how averse he was to performing life. After his first two albums flopped he kind of vowed to never record again which was sad. He was pretty crushed by all that. Weiners: Hazy Jane I and II Losers: None! All of these songs were decent and enjoyable.
A peaceful anthem filled with optimism and hope.
4.1 a close second behind pink moon faves: intro, hazey jane, one of these things first, northern sky
Quite nice actually. Nice instrumentals.
Melancholic and thoughtful. Has some jazzy vibes… I like his pink moon album better. Sad he died so young!
Enjoyable folk album. Some lovely songs. Never heard of the artist before so it was a good start to my 1001.
First time hearing a Nick Drake album, I only knew him from the Garden State soundtrack before. I always got a cozy chill out vibe from the song of his I’d heard before and this album is a lot more of the same feeling although musically there is more to a lot of the songs.
Not my favorite by Drake. I feel he was forced to make a more pop-friendly album. I still love it though.
I had heard his music out of context but the album really brought his work together in a coherent way. I appreciate the smooth vocals.
Root of a lot of alternative themes and styles to come. You can hear the sounds that from the 60s on would inspire people to push fringe music into other places. This is one I'll come back to with headphones to explore.
Solid singer song writer from the same musical movement as Cat Stevens and Jim Croce
Very nice - Borat
Not bad. I liked Pink Moon better but this is nice background music. I added Sunday to my playlist for this project; I just really vibed with the sound of that one. I would rate 3.5 if I could so I will round to a 4
Poor Nick - SO misunderstood. Hazy Jane has a real rocking feel going off. I love the light brass touches on At the Chime. There's even a late Elvis Vegas gospel tinge to Poor Boy. Drake hangs on to the notes and shows a great vocal delivery. It almost makes me want to go out for a walk in the countryside.
Stunning. Heard of this guy but completely got him confused with a mesh of other artists which he is not. Ethereal and beautiful album. Slightly trails off a bit in the latter half but excited about diving a lot more into this over the coming months. Starting off with a 4*, but can easily see this slipping up or down a tier. It feels like it's either gonna grow or get boring..excited to see which.
couldn’t have asked for a better snow day album
There are some haunting songs on here.
Peaceful; lilting; lovely.
I didn't think I would like an album this quiet and introspective. However, there is simply so much going on in each peaceful track that it still captures your full attention. Favorite track was the titular bryter layter
I like Nick Drake, his songs are chill. This isn’t as good as Pink Moon, and might not be as good as Five Leaves Left, but I still enjoy it a good amount. Also, a few days ago I hit being on here for a whole year (February 1st).
Compared to Pink Moon, which I had about a year ago and become my most listened to album last year, the lush instrumentation definitely doesn’t suit Nick’s style as well in my opinion. Maybe I just like sad music though, I don’t know. Still very good and the songs are well crafted for sure. 7/10
TIENE UN TONO DE VOZ CALMO Y AMENO PARA LOS OIDOS
Chill
Relaxed
I gave this one a couple of listens and enjoyed it. The kind of music you can put on in the background and every now and then it sucks you back in.
Sounds like Nick Drake. Love his jazz influences, which come out in this album. One track had interesting combo of bossa nova guitar with jazz sax and gospel choir. Not sure it was entirely successful, but interesting
I love listening to an album and being like "oh, he wrote THAT song?"
I have not heard this album or artist before. It is a bit outside my typical taste but listening wasn’t an awful experience. There’s a lot of pretty instrumentals so this makes a great album for background noise. My favourite tracks were: Northern Sky and At the chime of a city clock. My least favorite track was Fly. I would listen to this album again but I wouldn’t intentionally play it.
Very nice
18 year old me would have absolutely eaten this album UP
Very poetic. The music is solid but somehow seems to much of the same thing by the time you reach the end of the album. He had a lot of potential.
Hyggelig
Gode sange, fed stil!
9.3/10
This was nice, I enjoyed the instrumentals and I already know I like his voice. I like that it felt different to the other Nick Drake album I listened to.
Generally, love the Drake but it’s all kind of the same isn’t it?
Lovely voice and great compositions. Should’ve listened to Nick Drake a long time ago, but never did. Glad 1001 gave me the chance.
Love Nick Drake, so soothing. What a short, tragic life.
Sehr sanft.
Garden state soundtrack song
Wonderfully done, if a little lacking in variety
sqee
Interesting laid back chill feel to the music.
There’s some really nice jazz tracks !
Nick Drake is MASSIVELY underrated. Excellent.
Had never heard of Nick Drake. I really liked this album and it gave me some appreciation for that 70’s era folksy sound. Sad that Nick’s struggles robbed him of success and took his life way too soon.
*previously listened to* A nice balance of gentle guitars, bright horns and flutes paired with Nick Drake's quiet yet emotive voice. The mix of Drake's dour vocals and pleasant and uplifting instrumentation seems almost reflected on the cover. Sitting in shadows, face concealed by hair and darkness, Drake is surrounded by a bright burst of color. It's intriguing to wonder what could've been in the career of Nick Drake if he was around to realize an album following in these blueprints.
I found the entire album easy to listen to. No one song stood out to me, but all of them used a variety of instruments in his compositions nicely.
Super mellow. I liked it.
Another lovely Nick Drake experience. Only giving 4 stars because the instrumentals took me out of it a bit
I like it
“Hazey Janey 2” invented belle & Sebastian. “One of these things first” such a great vibe. That on the Almost Famous bis feeling. “As simple as a kettle.” “Fly”: beautiful Wes Anderson music! Was this actually in Tenenbaums? “Poor Boy”: worst song I’ve ever heard.
Ambient-core with great supporting instrumentation (I’m looking at you flute in the title track). Doesn’t floor me but I do really like it.
pretty good, nice and mellow, good for working/studying
love the guitars and the voice
Interesting sound. Reminded me a lot of Bob Dylan. I enjoyed this album.
we love nick drake! Pink moon better but this had some solid songs. Also the instrumentals songs are pretty cool
New artist for me!
Nick Drake only made three albums, and this is the middle one. They are all achingly sad and beautiful; as he says on here, 'I never felt magic as crazy as this.' No one has played guitar like Nick Drake before or since, but too often on this album, the intricacy and crispness of his playing are drowned out by the lush instrumentation and arrangements. However, there are several highlights: 'Northern Sky' has the most beautiful middle eight I have ever heard, and it breaks my heart every time I hear it. 'Hazey Jane II' evokes warm summer meadows. 'Fly' is perhaps one of the most overlooked songs in his oeuvre. On the whole, though, it's just too jazzy for my tastes and has too many instrumental pieces that sound like a soundtrack to some imaginary sixties romance movie. 'Pink Moon' was his next, last, and greatest album, stripping away the orchestration to just his voice and guitar, and it is all the better for it (albeit so, so bleak in lyrics and mood).
I adore Nick Drake. This is the least of his three albums, I think. A little goofy, and his voice on the guitar is obscured.
Schönes Album. Cooles Feeling. Sanfte Stimme. Ruhige Atmosphäre
Good album. Definite influence on a number of my early-mid-00's artists.
Actually pretty good. 4/5
4 1/2 stars - amazing!
Great album! Very neat guitar playing and fun vocal melodies. The full backing band adds a nice additional layer absent from Pink Moon. That said, I prefer Pink Moon, but this album is still great!
Nick Drake’s life story saddens me. This is a good album.
Very pretty
So, this is a fairly deep work. Unique and touching. It's pretty obvious to me that this music would not be beloved by a vast audience. Too introspective, too insecure. These are qualities in people that we often tr to overcome and the casual music buyer doesn't want to spend their hard-earned cash on such things. But as a work of art I can appreciate it. In fact, the poetry here is (of course, Drake studied literature at Cambridge) on a higher level. Sorry to hear about Drake's ultimate inability to satisfy his own ambition. Maybe if he had been able to accept his own version of himself... life is difficult for us all at times. Maybe don't try so hard and accept that the world IS the way that it IS. Not to say that it isn't painful. This music is a strangely clear and vivid view of Drake and his feelings, feelings that I know I've had a various times. Quite an amazing work actually.
Very solid: this was beautiful. The acoustic guitar and lyrics paired each other so well and every single part of the album felt meaningful. Not a perfect album, was a little repetitive at times but overall it was pretty amazing.
Nick Drake at his saddest
That goes down as my favorite Nick Drake record. Lovely.
Man, Nick Drake is really good. This is the 1st artist I've gotten 2 albums from and it continues to hold as on I really enjoy. I think Five Leaves Left is still better in pretty much every way, but still really liked this one.
It was shocking to hear an instrument that wasn’t an acoustic guitar on a nick drake album and even more shocking that it retained and even elevated his usual style. This was a solid album that really felt like someone let nick have full control over an entire orchestra and he used it really well. Hazey Jane 2 and northern sky were my favs
Sometimes the orchestration is too loud and you cant hear nick. I wish they'd make a bryter layter remix with a more stripped down production.
I listened to this on a Sunday and it was the perfect chilled out sound for that day of the week. I didn't listen to the vocals so much this time
Though at moments I cannot stand Nick Drake’s vocals, Bryter Later’s instrumentation does marvellous work at enriching his vocals and creating harmony overall.
Haunting and ethereal.
Maybe this just hit at the right time, but this was excellent. Catchy riffs, interesting lyrics, and an amazing tone carried me through a rainy day listen. I had assumed he was from the late 90s, early 00s because of my introduction to him in the Garden State soundtrack.
Nice easy listening and enjoyable.
I dig it. The OG Bon Iver
chill
So Nick Drake has been an interesting discovery for me thanks to the 1001. As compared to the other album I heard a few days ago, this one has some fantastic saxophone playing, more instrumentation in general... it's rich and textured and I like it.
Favourite tracks: bryter layter; introduction; hazy Jane 2; one of these things first
Gute alte Gitarrenmusik. Han zerscht gmeint s album heisst Bruter Lauter.
Jaaaaa! D songs sind oft so perfekt abgeschlosse (zb northern sky)… fast scho chli zu perfekt? Has mega gern glost: 4
introduction sehr schön. Hazey Jane II mega schöni blöser und sini stimm isch huere nice. sehr dynamisch. überraschend country-mässig. glaub er stimmt sini gitarre abe? drums uf at the chime if a city clock sehr nice. er nimmt am suuf-jan sini melodiekomplett usenand. one of these things first huere simpel aber mega schön mit de arpeggio giti und piano wo sochli kontrast gebed mega nice.
Pleasant music. It’s quite calming. “Hazey Jane II” had me laughing. Idk why the way he sings that song is so funny but it is. “Bryter Layter” sounds like a final fantasy theme song when you enter a remote island village and talk to the shop keeper. “Sunday” is the song it changes to at night in the same village. “Northern Sky” was my favorite. I like the way this album made me feel. I’m going to listen to it again in the future. 8/10
4 because its great, just that i liked other albums by him a bit more, maybe i should give it a couple more listens
This is the second Nick Drake album I've listened to on this list, and it solidifies the opinion I had about Drake after the first album. While maybe not quite as moving as his later album Pink Moon, there's a lot of great, lyrical stuff here. And it offers a completely different sound than the more intimate Pink Moon. There are still some low points on the album, but overall another fantastic piece from Drake. Highlight: Hazey Jane II Lowlight: Sunday Surprise: One Of These Things First
3.8/5 - solid album, every track has some charm to it, though I don't feel that many stick out. I was surprised to hear how different this is to Pink Moon - a lot more conventional structure and orchestration, not in a bad way. Fave songs: Hazey Jane 2, At the Chime of a City Clock
7/10 relaxing
Good
Cried for no reason
bryter later nick drake this album is so lush and beautiful. i love instrumence... every time i need to feel happy or refreshed this is now my go to. it just instantly lifts your mood 🙂 faves: introduction, hazey jane ii, hazey jane i, sunday
i think the nick drake rating by #me is pink moon > five leaves left > bryter layter but i cannot deny i LOVE this guy. it's like an 8.5/10
Didn’t expect it but I really enjoyed this one! It’s a strong album and I at the very least enjoyed every song. It’s not a 5 for me just because it was missing SOMETHING, but definitely an album I’ll revisit! We love you Nick Drake (apparently!!!) Favorites: Hazey Jane II (very nice, the lyrics made me smile!! Love the feeling of this one), At the Chime of a City Clock (really beautiful lyrics and melody, but unfortunately I am currently feeling very lonely and isolated and sad and I live in a city so. It hit too hard. Shades of Kirchner's "Street, Dresden" (1908)), Poor Boy (that little Latin flair and gospel chorus and sax + piano solos have my foot tapping and head nodding.. Depressing lyrics but I really really do love the instrumentation on this one) Very nice: One of These Things First (miserable but cute lyrics), Hazey Jane I: (like if Bob Dylan had written a song for a PG-13 coming of age movie circa 2014), Fly (it's a nice song, just not my favorite on the album. Unexpectedly leans into that mid/late 60s British Invasion instrumentation (like something off a Beatles album from Revolver to Magical Mystery Tour)), Northern Sky (not my favorite but very sweet) I love all the instrumentals
Great album, though not his best. This probably would be a five if it weren’t for Ray Warleigh’s flute and sax solos. They feel really out of place here.
Pretty good, I liked it a lot more than i thought I would. Sunday also made it onto my prestigious Background Music playlist.
This was delightful!
This was of a piece with the Cherry Ghost album we reviewed this weekend in some ways. Drake's music and melodies have a sweetness to it, coupled with an artistic confidence that was evident from the opening song. Another I'd need some time to sit with and repeated listens to really determine my connection to the music. Nick Drake is a name I've heard before but an artist I knew nothing about, so I'm glad to have been introduced to this album.
this is my first real experience listening to nick drake after i gave his album "pink moon" a listen about a decade ago, and felt pretty lukewarm about it. going into listening to this one, i was weary that i would have a similar experience, but i found myself pleasantly surprised by this one. the main difference to me is the addition of other instruments, which i think enhances his songwriting, and makes it a lot more interesting and listenable for me. cool, pleasantly subdued folk music. it's even jazzy and soulful at times. a really interest combination that works pretty well. this album reminds me a lot of fairport convention meets donovan (which like, fairport convention is obvious as several members contributed to this one). but yeah, overall, i found this one to be pretty enjoyable. i am (cautiously) looking forward to revisiting "pink moon"
Favorite tracks: Hazey Jane II, At The Chime Of A City Clock, Northern Sky
Very good folk, well ahead of it's time
To me much preferable to five leaves left. More inspired sound and a more varied oral palette.
I love Nick Drake though some of the orchestrated bits are bit shmaltzy.
beautiful will definitely listen again and get into nick drake
pretty good
I mean... its nick drake? What else do i say?
chill
Perfect album to work to. Know and love Northern Sky. Also loved Hazey Jane II & I, Bryter Layter, and Poor Boy. Curious why II came before I
I listened to this album twice. Despite the apparent popularity of Nick Drake this is the first time that I remember hearing his music. I found his lyrics to be poetic and as such they deserved to be in the forefront of the beautiful but sparse instrumentation. "One of These Things First" and "Northern Sky" stood out for me on this record, however "One of these Things First" resonated the most with me. It spoke to my own regrets with the decisions that got me to where I am and the decisions that have kept me from where I thought I wanted to be.
I knew the hits from this one, but had never listened to the album. Such a vibe he creates.
This album is a masterpiece. I have no other words.
Album 199 of 1001 Nick Drake - Bryter Layter Rating : 4 / 5 Bryter Layter is the second studio album by English folk singer-songwriter Nick Drake. Dude had a hard life. Got more recognition after his death, than before. Really nice songs. Very laid back and chill album. Great Singer/Songwriter.
Completely unexpected great album. First songs sounded a bit like Dire Straits, but then the album started transforming in a very good direction in my opinion. It got a bit slower or even jazzier. And how the hell Nick Drake could add "blasphemous" instrumental songs on this album. Wish more artists understood that sometimes words are not needed. Great listen overall. "Poor Boy" is an underrated track.
This is the first time I've ever heard anything by Nick Drake, on purpose, at least. This is really nice - he has a really unique voice and I dig the 70s production. Favourite tracks: Hazey Jane II, At The Chime Of A City Clock, One Of These Things First, but actually, nothing stands out because the whole record is lovely! Made all the more poignant knowing that he died aged 26.
I found Nick Drake in 2006; I graduated from college, my first child was born, I was married, and my Dad passed away that year...so this one was personal. Overall a beautiful album, some parts just feel timeless.
Such a good voice. Well written songs. I enjoyed this album a lot.
I love Nick's music. One of the best singer-songwriters of all time, if not THE best. All three of his albums are must listens in my opinion. This is probably his weakest one, but it's also probably the most accessible. Super lovely. Strong 4/5.
Fuck it I liked it. I was dreading listening to 40 minutes of British folk music and was ready to absolutely fucking despise this but I actually really liked it.
Great studying/working music
Assuming pink moon and bryter layter also made the list?
Sitting with Stoic in his kennel the day after surgery, sad from the pain and confusion. So hard to see him suffer. Listened quietly on my phone, nice and mellow.
Tracks 2-4 are the best on the album, with track 2 being my favorite. The titular song is a nice instrumental break.
A refreshing, slow sound that really helped with my homework
Very interesting album. Great lyrics, pure, somewhat boring (but pitch perfect) voice. Great guitar. Very interesting and active bass line, much more so than you usually hear in folk music.
Love the contrast between his voice and the sax. Very lovely album
like it very much, but seems a bit like backhround music for me.
Great stuff.
I really liked this new (to me) musician. The acoustic guitar intro was beautiful and I can’t resist a butter-smooth voice, with flute, acoustic guitar and what sounds fed to me like an orchestra. My highest rating so far.
Very calm Some beautiful arrangements for the guitar Best song was poor boy
Ben Howard before Ben howard
Goodness of old school and new school
Very first thought: this is SAD but GROOVY man. Also, this album must be listened to via headphones. Really, really enjoyed, but not quite perfect. Also also I looked up more about Nick’s life and now I’m even more sad.
As soon as this album started I couldn't believe this was released in the 70s, it sounds way more modern. I really, really like this album. 4/5
Love this guy
This is fantastic.
Finally listened to a full Nick Drake album. Underrated and hauntingly beautiful, as expected.
4/5
Nice. Not earthshaking.
When I first heard Nick Drake I thought he was a modern artist. This is a great album, and only the little bit of indulgent instrumentals and aged arrangement(flute) keeps it from being a 5.
Gosh this is a treat. One of These Things First is one of my all time favourite songs. Pretty beautiful from start to end.
Cool Indy/folky. Mixed in some orchestral stuff, jazzy stuff with the piano and guitar driven music
Mellow.
Nice!
Dreamy
This is my second Nick Drake album that I've gotten on this list, and like Pink Moon, I really enjoyed Bryter Layter. Nick Drake's lyrics are dark and melancholy, but they come from the heart. The arrangements are beautiful as well, and I liked that these songs were less stripped down than the ones on Pink Moon. This is definitely an album that I would listen to again.
Fantastic album. Love the melody's with the subtle strings and horns in some of the songs. Great voice, songwriting and guitar playing.
Bryter Layter is a great album. More than that actually. Nick Drake was unable to write anything but fantastic tunes. But what I like most about Drake is his ability to create intimate spaces where you have no means of escaping his presence through the music. I have that feeling all the way through Pink Moon, but it’s not quite present here. I think I simply prefer the raw sound of Drake solo.
I prefer Five Leaves Left, but this album is also quite good.
This is a unique folk album. Bryter Layter is more of a folk pop/chamber music album than anything else. It’s still folk but it’s a little more than just folk. The instrumentation feels more expressive and interesting. There’s even a hint of jazz influences on the project. However, I’m not too keen on this guys voice. His whispers kind of unnerve me and it’s a little hard to describe. Eh, with everything in mind, I’d say 7/10.
Chill, occasionally morose guitar and piano music. A little Cat Stevens-y.
I do quite enjoy Nick Drake.
that took me y surprise, i was expecting grim misery songs but that was really pleasant. might actually listen to that again.
I once fucked a drake to death. It came back as a ghost and haunted me. Nick Drake is yet to do the same.
Better than Drake
Most tracks would be better without the strings!
Unique! Dylan/Simon and Garfunkel
I liked this a lot.
The musicianship is excellent, but I prefer a stripped down version of Nick Drake like on Pink Moon. For me Hazy Jane II is the highlight
Very nice, very melodic. Need to spend time to listen to the lyrics, though.
Hmm, Pink Moon was the second album I got on this list; this is the 75th. I'd actually listened to a bit of it then as Drake intrigued me without really brining me on board as somebody I'd really, really want to listen to time and again. This is certainly better (gasp) than Pink Moon. It's got more of a band feel and more variety, both of which I think are useful for Drake. There are bits of it that remind me of Belle and Sebastian - a band which I adore on so many levels, so this isn't a bad thing - and I enjoyed listening to this much more than Pink Moon. Would I listen again? Hmm, don't know. I might. That and the B&S comparison will take me up to a slightly surprising 4.
Slow.undersold singer songwriter stuff. Would listen again.
Pretty good album
whimsical and endearing. sounds a lot like alex murdoch, but i guess it should be alex murdoch sounds a lot like nick drake
Really enjoyed this one. Listened to it twice all the way through yesterday, and even started listening to 'Pink Moon' because I wanted more Nick Drake. I imagine I'll be playing his songs for a long time now. Thankful that this website recommended him to me :)
Fantastic album, it has similar issues as pink moon as there is nothing that elevates the album but it is cohesive, beautiful and filled with fantastic songs. S tier through and though.
I like Nick Drake and Bryter Layter sounded like a Nick Drake album, and so much so that I'm not sure if I've heard any of the tracks from this album before or not. There weren't any tracks that overwhelmingly stood out. At the same time, I didn't find anything that I was tempted to skip. I know that I could easily listen to this album again, just to give me a chance to hear some Nick Drake.
I liked this a lot. It’s now saved and will most likely make an appearance on Saturday mornings.
I have listened to Nick Drake many times, but I'm not sure I've ever heard much with a backing band. This is very good. I will be listening more.
Can’t go wrong with Nick Drake
chill, relaxed and upbeat
Usually pleasant, breathy vocals with sometimes upbeat instrumentals create an interesting contrast.
Nick Drake is the template that all folksy singer songwriters have borrowed from This meanders a bit but touched greatness more than a couple of times
Another nice Nick Drake album. I liked this one quite a bit. 4/5
I can see why this is considered his “leaser” album, especially when Pink Moon is so much more intimate. Still, Drake’s songwriting chops are worth digging into here, and he has some real bangers. B
Smooth. Good guitarist. Odd choice featuring a different instrument each track to accompany the guitar. All in all, not bad.
Very sweet
The first album review since the arrival of our beautiful baby daughter. I didn't think she'd appreciate Sepultura, Hole or Venom, but after a wet nappy change and a big wind, she enjoyed listening to this with me. I think she liked the mellow, soothing and wistful English folk and the little piano jazz flourishes along with the instrumental tracks that are interspersed throughout. She thought the lines "I never held emotion in the palm of my hand,... ...But now you're here, Brighten my northern sky" were particularly apt. Rating: 5/5 Playlist track: Northern Sky Date listened: 01/03/23
Good to listen to on the side
A bit too laid back for my style, but the instrumentation was very nice and relaxing!
Beautiful folk music featuring lush classical, jazz, and acoustic instruments that envelop you. Spacious and patient with plenty of highlights, I prefer this to Five Leaves Left with its greater consistency and optimistic mood.
Nick Drake is one of the artists I hadn't really listened to before the 1001, but is quickly becoming one of my favourite artists. This has some excellent tracks on it. Pink moon is still my favourite album of his though
This was some prime vintage indie. What really made it stand out was the always surprising and creative instrumental additions that kept the album moving as opposed to stuck in the repetitive rut of “guy singing with guitar.” Nahhh you throw in some horns, a lil mellotron, some wild jazz keys, and why not, flute. Jury is still out on the vocals for me, something about it kinda reminds me of “Going Up the Country” but whatever idk
I feel like this is objectively boring but I really like it. But why does Hazey Jane 2 come before Hazey Jane 1? That’s my biggest qualm. 3.5/5
It’s Nick Drake so you have to say it’s great. It’s the law. 2 amazing songs, everything very nice.
7.5/10. Pretty good vibes. Unique voice
very good sound, unexpected gem. I liked it a lot and will try to listen more.
Late 80s, early 90s or so, I had a dubbed cassette copy of "Pink Moon". I really didn't get it at the time, and for some reason I thought Nick Drake was in Pink Floyd. Listening to this album, I realize the sound and style he was going for. And it really works, depending on the mood you are in. A nice lazy Sunday is a good day for something like this. I then went back to Pink Moon and found it much more enjoyable than I did as a youth. It helps that the title track is much more recognizable due to the VW ad. I mean, his voice was very recognizable from that, so it was easier to access. Sometimes that simple guitar and singing is all you really need. It hit the spot for me.
Really impressive and criminally underrated judging by the wiki, hear lots of 90s/00s singer songwriters taking cues from this. Apparently the most straightforward of his three albums so looking forward to the next two.
Never heard any Nick Drake before Hmm. I started thinking I really liked this but wasn't so sure by the end. Got a kind of mystical, dreamy quality(???) I didn't dislike any of it but not sure how much I really liked any of it either. It's fine I guess but won't be rushing back
so much orchestration on the opening track. i'm used to sparser from nick drake. and a lot of very 70s sounds. but it's still clearly nick drake.
Loved this
Review tbc - maybe my least favourite Drake, but that's still excellent
Not bad at all
8/10
I liked this. I'm glad he has at least one more album on the list, and I'm excited to listen to it. His voice is nice. It was a very relaxing listen. Not really sure what else to say. My favourite song was probably Hazey Jane I, but it's hard to pick.
Beatiful instrumentally but I think Nicks lacks a little bit vocally for it to be a 5
