Another electronic music album that I couldn't stand. I knew I wasn't a huge fan of the genre before I started this and that is really becoming quite apparent. Maybe it's because I only like some EDM, mostly synthwave, but I have no idea what makes this good or important.

Hi: Storm 3000, Open Up Lo: Afro Left, Song of Life, Inspection This is a pretty influential dance/trance/industrial/jungle album, I've definitely heard many of these tracks and synth patches in passing and DJ sets, but never really know what I was hearing. Most of this is pretty good music for the code zone, or just for...relaxation. What sours it for me is something I dislike about a lot of this type of EDM: I call it "jungle jabber"...It just grates on me. The instrumental tracks are pretty good and feel pretty at home next to some Front Line Assembly, Prodigy, VNV Nation, KLF, or even the Matrix soundtrack.

There are a couple of enjoyable more melodic tracks on the album, which aren't a slog to sit through. But, unfortunately it felt like there were more repetitive tracks that overstayed their welcome, than there were real enjoyable pieces of music. After an hour of this, I'm not sure I ever want to hear it again!

I didn’t know until today that there was a 90s Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Some interesting sounds at the start, devolved into dance cliches quickly.

I actually liked a few tracks, especially first couple but then it sort of fell apart for me and became a bit of a slog.

I do a lot of house dancing so I'm very familiar with the genre. This is fine music but there is way better house stuff out there.

Classic nineties' electronic music, so identifiable by its decade that it's also quite dated by now. Which brings me to ask: In this day and age, would I choose to listen to this album? And the immediate answer is "probably no".

very interesting album, electronic but older, with words. Some interesting beats, but nothing that wowed me. I'm sure someone would say these songs laid the groundwork for future electronic music but it felt a tad basic. I do like the album cover though!

I liked this. Another Euro house album, though I enjoyed it quite a bit more than the "jungle" ones we've had. A handful of infectious beats that I'll enjoy returning to. Nothing spectacular but I like this. Favorite tracks: Afro Left, Song of Life, Inspection, Release the Pressure. Album art: A shark's jaw over a camera lens? Not sure I understand this, but at least it's kinda cool to look at. 3.5/5

Ibiza cream classic, this was pretty great and a change from what I've been getting recently

Chemical Brothers, take note! Finally, someone that can do house/trance/EDM without just looping the same refrain over and over and over and over. I really appreciate seeing an album on this list that isn't vocal-centric. There are vocal tracks that come and go, but beats, instruments, sounds and samples are what takes center stage. Each track has a solid foundation that carries throughout, but there is a diverse cast of musical characters that roams into, out of and through each. Likewise there is a flow and continuity to the entire album that makes the whole thing feel like a complete work of art. On the whole the album is equally enjoyable playing in the background or occupying your entire attention span. I'm really glad to have been introduced!

This is not my vibe and was not a good lunchtime coffee break quiet reflection before a meeting album. This is not to say it’s not good just that it was not for me.

I just don't think I'm ever going to love a house album. It just gets too repetitive for me and, despite the clear technogical breakthroughs and interesting textures going on throughout, it just leaves me a bit cold

This took me back! What a groundbreaking album this was. They were true techno pioneers.

House isn't my favourite genre of EDM, but Leftism has sat amongst my other CDs since the early 2000s. A real yardstick for others to be measured. At 2 hours it is an epic to boot.

Went in to this with super low expectations. EDM usually bores me (unless I’m plastered) but this was refreshingly interesting - most of the time. Pretty cool they got Johnny Rotten for “Open Up”. Fun beats - I might even listen to this again Fave tracks: “Release the Pressure” “Space Shanty” “Open Up”

Samen met mijn dochter geluisterd. helaas waren we er na een paar liedjes wel klaar mee. Soms zeiden we: "dit is best wel aardig/lekker..."

Ik begon vol goede moed, maar het was toch niet echt heel lang boeiend.

Dance is nooi helemaal mijn ding geweest. En zo tijdens het werk luisteren voelt toch iets te onrustig.

Deze had ik nog op mijn to-do lijstje staan, en ik snap wel dat ik 'm destijds heb overgeslagen. Wat een enorm gedateerde synth chaos. Op een festival met 10 bier in je mik is dit vast leuk maar ik kan geen moment vinden waarop ik dit thuis zou willen luisteren.

De laatste dagen gaan we goed. Niet alleen maar ouwe rock of britpop. Leftfield kende ik alleen van naam. Ik ga dat verder onderzoeken.

A great but gentle slab of sound. It has a shape, isn't exactly ambient, even in the house way. But it works well as a soundtrack for life, biorhythmic.

Good grooves! Helps me focus on my work. Occasionally brought me to dancing without even trying.

Se siente como que la música del disco se divide en tres clases... 1.Música electrónica que ponen en club para bailar, 2.Música que tiene un poquito de ambición y trata de hacer una canción o de ser algo más tipo ambiental cercano a Brian Eno o 3.Música de promo de MTV de finales de los 90s con unos gráficos abstractos de cubitos por computadora. La verdad es que el tipo 2 no es terrible, aunque tampoco se acerca a algo brillante, el tipo 1 no se me hizo tan bien hecho y el tipo 3 simplemente suena a eso, música utilitaria que debería de estar de fondo sin ser el centro de atención. Decía por ahí que este era "el primer disco de música electrónica que se consideraba un álbum completo" o algo a ese efecto, lo cual aparte de que se me hace una exageración y algo bastante erróneo por el lado histórico (creo que hay muchos discos de música electrónica con mucho más valor y peso como obras completas de muchos años antes de este), tampoco se me hace tan cierto del lado artístico. No siento cohesión, no siento línea, siento algunas canciones decentes y otras que se quedan a la mitad. Lo subo al 2 solo porque en serio andaba hasta de humor para música electrónica pero no, simplemente no me hizo nada de clic.

De plano no me gusta la mezcla del dance techno más electronicoso del mundo con cosas africanas. No logré darle una segunda pasada y aunque hubo pequeños momentos en los que me ponía a "mover el pie" no basta para que pueda aguantar voluntariamente ni una rola.

This may be the most meh album I've ever listened to. I have no opinion of it. Like no part of it was good or bad. It just was. It's like something that would be playing quietly in the background for the sole purpose of making sure people weren't sitting in silence, handcuffed to their thoughts.

House album so tracks are long. And its house music from the mid 90s, so it all feels like the backing tracks to the club scene from blade. The best parts of the album are when it leans into its afro inspired samples, but these beats just sound dated and stale. I am sure at the time this shit was ground breaking but now its just dull. very dull

EDM falls under the umbrella of functional music, along with movie soundtracks and Muzak, music meant to accompany an experience, like dancing in a club, watching a movie, or going to the airport. Nothing wrong with that, but by it's very nature, functional music is not usually meant for close listening. There are exceptions of course. Mouse on Mars or We come to mind in the realm of EDM, the works of Ennio Morricone or Jerry Goldsmith in film music, or Brian Eno's Music for Airports in ambient, the latter which has since blossomed into a full-blown genre divorced from its original function. Come to think of it, Mouse on Mars or We are categorized as IDM (Intelligent Dance Music), which can be read as an acknowledgement of the brainlessness of most dance music. Which leads us to Leftism. As usual, simplistic jackhammer beats overwhelm the music, although there is a patina of style and atmosphere laid over the tracks. I appreciate the eclecticism of including dub, reggae, and Johnny Rotten on these tracks, and there is some taste in the production (few cringe-inducing synth patches), but not enough to overcome the inherent limitations of the material, as explained above. I can imagine half paying attention to the musical content while dancing in a club with hundreds of other people and being okay with it, which is kind of a half-hearted endorsement. There's nothing here which is truly offensive, but as a standalone musical experience? Get me outta here!

What a gorgeous album. Some of the best electronic music I've ever heard. The dance tracks are intoxicating and the slower tracks sumptuous and gorgeous. My only complaint...it's 15 minutes too long. 4.5 🌟

I've never heard of this before but my gut instinct tells me it's electro, probably UK, probably goes for way too long. lol nailed it, got all 3. This shit is boring. Just sounds exactly like you'd expect, for OVER AN HOUR. fuck off. Did listen to the whole thing, though. I think it actively lowered my blood pressure, so it gets a point or two for that. 2/5.

It feels like I stepped into a sci-fi movie. And I'm not quite sure if I like it. 2/5 stars.

Ahh. I cannot fully express how i felt when this appeared as my album of the day. I wasn't 100% sure it would be on the list, as it seems to go a bit under the radar for some reason. One of the most influential electronic albums ever. Here we have classics like "Release the Pressure", "Song of life", "Open Up", "Melt" and "Original". Done in a range of styles from dub to trance but mainly techno. Great vocals delivered from the guest vocalists, including - hold your breath - Johnny Rotten from Sex Pistols (on Open Up). This is a must listen for EVERYONE.

Not bad, I enjoyed it playing in the background during work. But I also didn't enjoy it enough to think of it as more than background music.

Cool mix of house, techno, dub and triphop. Maybe too much techno for me to love though.

3.3 - I worried initially that this would be another uniquely British album selection on this Euro- and British-centric list. And in this case, my suspicions turned out to be true. While there are some great moments that transcend 1995, especially in the beginning ("Afro Left"), it overall sounds like what you might hear at some tired airport bar.

I have massive affection for this album - one of the first electronic albums I properly got into after my nothing-but-metal phase. Love electronica that fuses world music into itself. Love an album that wanders over the genre map. Fave track - gotta be "Open Up", really, but love everything on here...

Dope. A few good songs for a party playlist

Pues sí me gustó en general. Me parece que aunque ya existía el house y comenzaba el deep varios de los tracks de aqui se reflejan en el deep house, en el techno house y todas esas madres junkies que se presentaban hasta antes de la pandemia en el boiler room. Mis favs: Black flute y Space Shanty. Mood: Sí parecen de peli de Gaspar Noé.

Un álbum muy locochón, sí me dio un ambiente de raves a los que jamás asistiré, pero también de pronto tiene estas canciones más "tranquilas" que igual comparten como un estado de trance con las que se oyen más upbeat. Aunque todo me gustó, yo creo "Afro Left" y "Space Shanty" están entre mis favs del disco. 9/10

Brand spanking new to me, no idea what this even is. While listening to the album, I read that Leftfield is a duo and they hated this album after they finished it. I agree with them. Probably just not my cup of tea. Hard pass.

Good beats for film

Ho ascoltato le 11 tracce presenti nella release originale. Perché poi nelle successive sono state aggiunte altre tracce e b-sides per un totale di due ore d'ascolto (album su Spotify), e io vi voglio bene ma.. no. Comunque è stato un bel tuffo negli anni '90, ho pensato alle sale giochi, a Mortal Kombat e alle macchine a scontro. Musicalmente non lo so. Non capisco, ci sono anche idee carine e moderne, ma la maggior parte delle volte vengono offuscate da questo sound anni '90.. per carità quello è il periodo suo. Concludendo, non mi ha fatto schifo ma non penso che lo riascolterò.

Great electronic album. Leftfield was a pioneer in this area in my opinion. The songs stand alone just fine, yet also support listening as a full work together. This album you can focus and zone out on anywhere and still enjoy it.

Original: La tipa che canta su questo pezzo non so perché mi ricorda la cantante dei Broadcast. In Conclusione: L'house non è un genere che mediamente apprezzo poco (anche un po' perché mi è rimasto il pregiudizio dalle superiori). In ogni caso questo album ha anche qualche trovata interessante a livello di suono tipo i synth con le formanti e in generale, anche se non mi piacciono i pattern di batteria che usa la house, certe cose ritmiche sopra sono carine. Detto questo però l'ho trovato comunque abbastanza vuoto di contenuti, come sottofondo è piacevole e magari pure da ballare se sei millenial ma non lo risentirò.

Questa è musica che invecchia malissimo, ad oggi sembra quella che mettono di sottofondo nei plugin crackati. Gli do 2 perché tornando da una cena dopo una bottiglia di vino alcuni pezzi mi cullavano.

Still listen to this album to this day. So many good tracks, doesn’t get repetitive and one of the best paced albums of all time. Release The Pressure and Inspection are dub classics, Original & Open Up are perfectly cast vocal tracks, top notch. Amazing on the dance floor and through headphones. Leftfield could never have bettered this.

An amazing melting pot of influences and genres. House, Trance, Dub, Tribal all blended together. Some gorgeous instrumental tracks combined with great vocal tracks, most notably the absolutely banging Open Up. Still sounds amazing today. Great album.

Decent 90s electronic music album. Some tracks are very good, and the vibe is sustained all through the record. I fell however, that jams at the start of the record are better, I could remember Afro Left, Release the Pressure and Original songs very well. The rest, well, not that impressive.

After being real cool on much of the electronica served up to me so far, this one actually clicked. Seems like good study/coding music, but according to the reviews I'd be best off tripping face in a London warehouse.

This is much better now than it was in 1995 when every DJ was obsessed with how cool Leftfield were. It's pretty pleasant background music, I quite enjoyed it going on around me but never really got involved.

I don't listen to much house (or just electronic music for that matter), so I can appreciate something new like this. The beats are nice, but the ambient parts get a bit hollow and generally drag out for me. I think a large part of this album is that it's meant to be played in a club setting. Lights, dancing, drinks, and socializing would all enhance the music! But in a vacuum, the music has problems keeping me engaged as a I sit here at my computer. Some standout tracks on here (Space Shanty gets especially good with that phaser/flanger. Daft Punk, anyone?), can't say I was into the whole album though.

Finally after 39 long albums Dickie gets his Trance/Rave album! And not just any Rave album. Its the lads that defined the fucking genre at its peak. This was so important they now have an area of Glastonbury named after them and both the chemical brothers and the prodigy (although the latter clearly weren't listening very hard) were influenced by them. I've never listened to the whole thing before and have some new headphones coming this afternoon. So will strap myself in, take some pills (paracetamol or rennie) and get my rave on! Unlike most of this genre- this has love, heart, and a purpose. It holds my attention throughout and is actually fucking interesting which is a major feat for dance music which is usually... well.... boring. Also that is some Album cover. I might buy it just so I can put it up my wall! Actually having checked the price of one of the most rare vinyls in music, maybe I won't. Highlights: 21st Century Poem & Storm 3000 4/5

8/10. Giving this the benefit of the doubt as I didn't get a very clear listen due to having my windows rolled down on the freeway to combat the lack of AC. What I could hear of it sounded pretty cool though, and I expect I'll come back to this later.

Beats technoid clubtauglicher als in Erinnerung - selbst zum Frühstück ein geiles Teil, das in einem Vierteljahrhundert nix an Sattheit verloren hat. Das Album hat für mich zwar keinerlei narrativen Wert , dafür sind die Einzelteile in der Auslage aber sehr hübsch anzuschauen. Funkelnde 4.1

Gestern schon geschrieben: aufgrund der für mich wirklich schrecklichen Single "Open Up" waren Leftfield bei mir durchs Raster gefallen - nachdem ich ihre früheren Tracks (gehört natürlich in der Steve Mason Experience auf BFBS) alle ziemlich super gefunden hatte. Dann noch ein komisches Cover, plötzlicher Popstar-Status und viel zu viel Konkurrenz auf dem Mark - zack, hat man sich das alles seit 26 Jahren nicht mehr angehört. Hat also einen schönen Time-Capsule-Effekt: dieses warme Acidgeblubber, die kitschen Trance-Flächen, die (UK represent!) immer wieder eingestreuten Breakbeats: man möchte direkt wieder auf die Loveparade! Ist sicher nicht Technos größter Wurf, wundere mich auch ein bisschen warum gerade die auf der Liste gelandet sind (vermutlich wegen Popstar-Status damals), aber macht auf jeden Fall Spaß. Voll verdiente 3,8!

He escuchado mil veces este nombre de grupo como referencia de música electrónica pero creo que nunca los había escuchado. A pesar de gustarme el IDM o el Ambient esto no termina de interesarme mucho. En mi opinión este disco no es imprescindible y creo que ha envejecido muy mal.

Didn't do it for me as much as the Fatboy Slim album... feels less cohesive and a little more like a 90s movie. But still kind of pumped I'm getting exposed to this kind of music. 2.5

It's hard to overestimate the significance of Leftism, roundly acknowledged upon its release in 1995 as the first truly complete album experience to be created by house musicians and the first quintessentially British one.

I honestly don’t really see how this one is so much different/better than the typical 90s electronica. I mean, it wasn’t bad, but I didn’t find it to be anything special.

Used to be great, but hasn’t aged that well.

I like a fair amount of electronic music from this era, particularly British electronic music, but I never listened to this one somehow. Although it is slightly more dancey than most of what I was listening to back then, this would've fit right in and been a treasured part of the musical landscape. As I think the best electronic music should be, it is a fun headphone ride. I also like all the different influences they incorporate. I gravitate more towards the slower tempo numbers.

Not bad, I was coding and this was perfect for in the background. I'm sure there's some history here that's important but I typically don't get much out of typical house/techno unless it's live. I suppose 2.5 up to 3.

Tried like hell to find the theme from "Shallow Grave" only to discover it not on this record. Still, I believe it was this album that led me to enjoy Aphex Twin and Autechre as opposed to radio stuff like Fatboy Slim.

What a time to be alive, I imagine this was something like the rave generation's Revolver, except instead of the sitar it was ecstacy. Space Shanty is an absolute banger despite the tacky title track

Cool ambient music. A little like Mickey Hart meets Rusted Root meets Daft Punk.

4.5/10 Atmospheric but a bit passive for my taste, impressive sounding but yeah, left something missing for me

This is much better now than it was in 1995 when every DJ was obsessed with how cool Leftfield were. It's pretty pleasant background music, I quite enjoyed it going on around me but never really got involved.

Its like being in a late night European dance club in a great way.

Interesting, but not my type

I really liked this one! Electronic albums aren't always my thing, but I appreciated the musical influences here, specifically the rock sounds throughout the record. I think I was initially thrown off a bit by the vocals, but it grew on me.

The only album so far I could not get through, not coz it tested my patience but I know this is so not my jam very tropical and bouncy electronic music. Sure some people will love and I do appreciate the array of sounds they use in the songs I heard but this is my personal rating and I have tried but I cannot open up to this sound 1.5/5
