Reviews (page 9 of 13)
No queda guardado
maybe it was the cocaine after all
I’ve heard stronger albums from David Bowie than this. 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 has a distinct atmosphere and some interesting ideas, especially in the longer tracks, but it doesn’t fully come together for me. At times it feels a bit stretched out, and not everything holds my attention. It’s a solid record, just not one I’d rank among his best.
Buen disco.
I understand why this album is on here and I do appreciate its sound but I think in general I just don’t love David Bowie’s music? Hot take yes, but his voice just doesn’t do it for me outside of certain songs.
Very short album in terms of songs (6) but there are some belters. Golden years and tvc15 hang together amazingly well. Not everything lands and still the voice can be irritating
7/10 Tough one. The title track is one of Bowie's best works. I love the buildup and the manic energy. The rest of the album is kinda mid. Highlights: Station to Station TVC15
Short. Pretty good.
i will be revisiting this album this week because to be honest i didn't give it my best attention
Great title track, enjoyed Word on a Wing, TVC15 is my favourite, Wild Is the Wind is excellently mournful.
I'm aware of this album as it's usually ranked as one of Bowie's greatest, but I've never sat down to listen to it start-to-finish. So, uh, ... meh? I don't know. It's not bad, but I'm not sure I understand why this album is so beloved.
Enjoyed overall. 3.5
I am considering doing a bunch of cocaine so I can forget about this album as well.
This is not my favourite Bowie album, but still the master at work
This was cool. Not my fav album of his but Golden years is great. Kept my interest throughout.
I enjoyed this listen. Golden Years is of course the most recognizable, but the last track Wild Is The Wind was a standout for me too. Overall the record wasn’t one of my favorites of his, but still some solid Bowie. And to think this was the level of quality he was able to produce while essentially barely surviving on a steady diet of cocaine.
Underwhelmed by this one and questioning its inclusion. Sure it’s Bowie, but feels like a collection of B Sides that each drag on about two minutes too long
It was fine. Some good grooves and interesting songs. Bowies voice is always solid. But overall nothing that great on hear. Just good and not on par with much of his other stuff. 2.75
I fear that this is the album that confirmed for me that I just really don’t like David Bowie’s voice.
Fun
You either love David Bowie, or are indifferent to him. I'm somewhere in the middle. I love his hits, but the deep cuts don't really resonate with me. That said, there's no denying his genius. I enjoyed this record, but it's unlikely I'll listen again on purpose.
3/5 station to station
Paljon normaalimpaa rokkia :D Parhaat: Station To Station, Wild Is the Wind, Word on a Wing
Idk why but not what I thought Bowie would sound like
O.K.
Not bad but not to Bowies usual standards
Is Bowie a divisive musician? I've always been aware of him and his work through his massive hits, even as I was growing up in the early 2000s, but I still just can't get behind the work I've come across on this list. The instrumentation of the tracks do a lot to help his case, but I think Bowie's vocals just miss the mark for me in such a massive way that I may never really appreciate his music. And as a result of that, this is one of the longest 38-minute albums I've listened to. Each song just goes on and on, Bowie's lyrics and voice meandering through the long tracks. 2.5/5
I'm always pleased when a Bowie album comes up on here. Didn't take a super close listen, will come back to this.
Está bien
Not my favorite Bowie record
Feel like I'm taking crazy pills. It's just okay?
3.5
David Bowie is cool. We can all agree on that. This album is ok though. I really want to love it but it's nothing ground breaking. 3/5.
Nice but not too nice...oldschool rock stuff...
3/5 04-05-2026
Not really a David Bowie fan, and having had a couple of albums of his already I have a feeling there are gonna be a ‘clutch’ of them. What I like about it is the intricate rhythms, guessing a 70’s soul undertone. (For example in ‘Stay’ and ‘Station’). Still haven’t developed a taste for Bowie’s vocal and it’s the thing I like least. So the ballads are my least fave tracks (ie the last one). Plus, even though I do like a long track (when something gets into a groove) I find a lot of this a bit repetitive and boring. It’s a 3.5 for me. Fave track: #1 first half of Station. Number tracks: 6 07/04/26
Good album, didn't stand out to me. 6.4/10
I don’t know why - but this felt OK…and just that. I know I’m not the only one that thinks this is way to many Bowie albums.
Strong, sophisticated album but not as good as some of the others of his on the list. 3
259/1089 5th Bowie album on this project and i think this is my favourite cover art of his omg it’s a good album, i think 3rd out of the 5. could definitely grow though faves: station to station and TVC15 68/100
A good Bowie album. Not his best but still good.
I'm going to go ahead and declare that it should be against the rules to put more than one album by the same artist on this list. Queen doesn't count because Queen is good. Edit: is this album fine? Yeah. But still, I'm sick of this dude.
Golden Years is a classic of course, but there are better Bowie albums out there
Deep in my soul I want to like Bowie more than I do, but I find this kind of boring? I’m not sure why it never grabs me. The song structure? The drama? I’ll just keep listening and probably never figure it out.
Solid, but the album doesn't really do anything for me personally.
3/5 Temas interessantes, porém a música é tediosa em boa parte do álbum.
Why is there so much David Bowie on this site? Cripes, if there’s one thing I’ve learned through the first 300 albums of this project it’s that there’s disproportionately a ton of Bowie in these 1001 albums. Unfortunately, I’ve also learned that I’m not actually that big of a fan of David Bowie. I'm not going to spend a ton of time on this one. I'll skim it. I've just not found that there's much in the deeper David Bowie cuts that has ever really resonated with me and I don't want to spend the time sifting through this one. I do like Golden Years quite a bit though. That song probably gets this record a full point. Actually, as far as David Bowie records go, this is probably the best one I've been presented with so far. 7/10
I don’t think the peaks in this album are all that high, but it is consistently fun. Not much else to say. It’s enjoyable but not that special. 7/10
need to relisten a but more but word on a wing and the title track are bangers
So good. He has such a musical range.
:)
Bowie. Not my cup of tea but listenable.
3/5
Interesting. Based on my friend's review, I thought I was going to hate it but I didn't. I wouldn't want t listen over and over again, but it was nice in the background.
this was pretty good but doesn’t live up to the more famous stuff. also as far as i can tell the white supremacy wasn’t reflected in the album itself but the knowledge of the thin white duke persona did have a slight effect on my enjoyment
Unique piano arrangements and good guitar parts. I would need a second listen to understand all the lyrics. The songs were a bit too long and seemed to drag a bit.
Pretty standard Bowie fare for the era. Still good, but doesn't really pop.
Ok
Mostly upbeat and funky. Like a lot of his stuff, heard the titles of the song in the song a lot. I can imagine being in the 70s listening to this album while pacing my living room making a hard decision about love. Liked tracks 2,3,4 a lot.
Hyvä levy, tuskin jää pyöritykseen kuitenkaan. 3/5.
It's Bowie, but it's not my favourite Bowie.
Took a nap to it and it felt like the perfect way to listen.
Day 11 — David Bowie — Station to Station (1976) Listened: Mar 6–7, 2026 Genre: Art Rock / Glam Rock / Proto-New Wave Vibe: Cold, hypnotic, theatrical — cocaine-fueled late-night Berlin energy with soul influences Highlights: • Station to Station • Golden Years • Word on a Wing Impression: Not necessarily my style of rock but I was able to enjoy it after a few listens. Enjoyed Golden Years right away while others grew on me. Rating: 3.1/5 Keep songs? Yes Revisit album? Yes
mid
Highlights: Golden Years, TVC15, Stay, Wild Is the Wind It was ok, but not something wow. I only had Golden Years liked before listening so I expected a bit more from the record. Most of the tracks are drawn out so there are only six on the record. The style is kinda standard for the time so no points for that either. Wild Is the Wind was a nice closer. I won't be revisiting this as a record, but some of the highlights will remain in rotation.
Probably the weakest of the Berlin trilogy for me, but Wild Is The Wind is fabulous.
One of the few Bowie albums that isn't completely abstract and garbage. The songs themselves are a little too long individually though. I dod think there was some really good guitar work throughout. Standout Songs: Station to Station TVC15 Stay
Bowie! Did not realize how jazz he could get infused in his music.
Achei essa álbum chato
Nice
nao é do meu gosto musical
Note : 3 À réécouter : Oui
Лучшая песня: Wild is the wind Худшая песня: Golden years Намного хуже Low, но лучше Hunky dory.
😴😴😴
great.. solid 7 but i have to give 3 stars bc its not 4 stars im sure of that
It's not bad but I'm not a big fan of it. The music is great, let down by the vocals.
not my favourite bowie album
Meh, a little funky and done well with some fun sounds but ultimately not that interesting to me
I mean I do like some David Bowie stuff, he’s done a lot of inspirational work. I’m just not keen on this album. His voice is marmite for me. Some songs it’s great in some it just sounds off. Music wise this album is great, can’t take that away from it. Just wants over excited when I heard the songs.
If I had to do a "Top 10 artists that *everybody* loves, but that I have never seen the appeal of" then this dude here would be top. Every time one of his albums appears, I dutifully listen, and then draw the conclusion that I must be "doing music wrong". This album is ever-so-slightly different though, because, as much as it pains me to admit, "Golden Years" absolutely SLAPS. The slightly sleazy vocal, the irresistible bass line, the "whop, whop, whop" AND the massive irritation to my wife when I kept singing "Golden Circle" to the same tune whilst on holiday in Iceland.
"Golden Years" is grating, the rest of it is decent.
leider langweilig, sorry david bowie
Only 6 tracks? Well, this one won’t take all that long to listen to a couple of times! A “perfectly fine” album. Nothing really special, although Golden Years is a good track. Not one of Bowie’s best.
Bowie's tenth album and took place in his 'Thin White Duke' arc. I've heard this one before but I'm not sure I've ever gone back to it after the first time. The Thin White Duke is a character of Bowie's I'm the least interested in. Most of the interest I feel in this arc is more about Bowie himself than his art from this era. There's a lot of different genres in here. Funk, soul, electronic, and rock. Overall it's that classic 'art rock,' electronic 70's R&B,' and 'space rock' that Bowie was so well known for. I always find this era's R&B nostalgic in a way. While I never grew up with it, my Grandad was so into it. Especially Bowie. Perhaps that's why I've never enjoyed R&B from the 00's onwards that I actually grew up with. The musical history makes sense when you listen to it as a through like but sharing a bunch of it through Grandad and then growing up with the 00's onwards' style of it. I dunno. So much of the album is fueled by and is about a drugs and the hallucinations that came from it that. Primarily cocaine. This was the Thin White Duke arc after all. But, perhaps with hindsight and reading over lyrics & interviews, it makes the album fascinating, frenetic, aloof, emotional, but dull. The emotion feels so earnest and I believe Bowie's words about the feelings he has but cocaine has such a elative emotion feeling to it that it that even with the emotions that come with the crash, it's a limited range of emotions. The stories in these songs are deceptive, full of passion, courage, dispair, and joy but through the filter of cocaine highs. Honestly most of the reflection and bredth of emotion you can find that came about during the making of this album came about afterwards, sometimes even well after the Thin White Duke character had ended. Bowie says far more looking back than he ever did in the haze. It might be why the Thin White Duke is the least interesting character Bowie had in my opinion. After writing that, I wonder if that's why "Stay" was the song I liked the most off this album. While I love the Jazz stylings in the guitar and drums cause I'm a sucker for Jazz, the song seems so careless in its desire. Directing it AT a person but framing it as a need for something but it being unknown if it's worth anything or even shared. Is there projection in there? I feel like no but you never can be sure in intpretation. Another reason I say no is, in an interview Bowie mentioned the song was written while he was struggling with the monotany of his cocaine addiction. Is this too much to write? Who knows. This is the first album in this series and perhaps it's a testament to Bowie's talent that it's so easy to ramble about it his work in it's meaning and the emotions felt.
It was fine.
I haven't listened to very much David Bowie; this is the second album I've listened to in full, but my impression of him so far is that the instrumentals are top class, The bass lines are catchy, The compositions are solid, but I don't feel neither here nor there about David Bowie himself. But I can appreciate him for creating a style of music that exists somewhere in between progressive rock, funk and pop. 7/10
If I were grading this by Ray's scale (the idea, I think, being that we should have about 200 each of 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s), I'd probably give this one a 2, but, on my scale, I'll give it a 3. I've never been a huge Bowie fan, but most of his stuff is solid enough, and this album is pretty decent. 2 of the songs I already knew (Golden Years, TVC15). The rest, after 1 listen, good enough, maybe a little forgettable. Actually, if I could, I'd probably give this a 2.5, rather than a 3. A little boring, maybe? Curious to know what you guys think.
Bien. No lo llegué a terminar. En algunos momentos me aburrió
Not the worst Bowie album I've been forced to listen to, not the best either. By his standards he seems remarkably not out of his mind or off his face for most of this one. Still talking out of his arse a lot of the time though.. saying that, Golden Years I enjoyed a lot. A bit of me feels like this should be more than a 3, but another part of me feels 4 is slightly too generous.. most of me doesn't care though. So 3 it is.
Not bad at all. Respect for this era Bowie and his ravenous hunger for coke. Golden Years is the standout. I also loved the unrelenting repetition in TVC15, though I would have thought a song about Iggy Pop's girlfriend being eaten by a TV would be more interesting. It's a bang average album from the thin white duke.
Not my favorite Bowie album, but a solid entry.
3 and a half. Better than yesterdays
Better than Heroes, but not flawless. ★★★½
2/9 First David Bowie album I've ever listened to today. Not bad
Not the best David Bowie album in my opinion.
So I'm starting to believe that Bowie was formulaic. Most of his albums have one smash hit and are then filled with a bunch of good songs that are thematically similar (although often have a different general theme than the smash hit, which is interesting over a catalogue but not necessarily an album). Here it's obviously Golden Years (although Stay can make its argument; it's a better song) and '70s glam rock. I actually enjoyed this album over the several others I've encountered in the project, and I'm just so surprised that the Thin White Duke full of thin white lines produced this, but I'm left not really knowing what to do with Bowie for the purposes of the project. Influence (like, overall Bowie's a 5, but this album in a vacuum is what, 2?) 3. Quality 4. Intangibles 2. Hits 3. I liked it more than I expected to even though Golden Years is a top 5 Bowie song for me 3.
They did make me groove to them loved the song "STAY" particularly loved how it started out
Station to Station 3/5 Golden Years 3/5 Word on a Wing 3/5 TVC15 4/5 Stay 3/5 Wild Is the Wind 3/5 Overall Album 3.17
luv luv
Nejak som nenašiel potešenie v počúvaní tohto albumu. Od Bowieho mám radšej iné albumy.
station to station - definitely my first time listening to a song that's 10 minutes long...not a fan but i understand the appeal
Robert Dimery, a well-document David Bowie superman, had been petitioning to change the name of the Kennedy Center to the "Bowie & Kennedy Center." That plan was scrapped even after his amendment to call it "The Bowie & Trump & Kennedy Center." Once those plans fell through, he began considering renaming the Dulles Airport to "The David Bowie International Airport" and Penn Station to "The Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars Station to Station." Sources close to the Bowie enthusiast say his endgame is actually far more global. He will soon announce a petition to turn Christmas Day into what Dimery terms "a worldwide celebration honoring the greatest man who ever fell to Earth."
How does Bowie have so many albums on this list. I feel like this album is the equivalent of scratch paper. There are some interesting sketches and ideas, but that’s it. Nothing really landed for me. We know Bowie can do much better work, and it feels odd that his lesser efforts are rewarded on this site. Sorry Bowie!
Alright. Got some.good sounds but doesn't hook me
His music is either super fun or pralines and dick. Oh well
It was good but not my favorite David Bowie album.
I really enjoyed a few songs, but other then that it was kind of repetitive
This was a Bowie album I had never really heard before. I like that is a quick and fun burst of funky jams. I have liked other Bowie albums much more, this one may take some more time to catch on with me.
Third (is it the last) Bowie entry? Arrangements are good but tracks run long..(too long for a couple of them). Favorite tracks? Golden Tears, Stay, ⭐⭐⭐ Liked it well enough
Ok I guess
Golden Years is one of my faves (because of A Knight's Tale) but I hadn't heard the others.
I like Bowie but these weren't my favorites I would say.
Better than Coldplay
Great intro to David Bowie for me
Musically very good, just not a fan of his voice.
Fun to listen to! Not as big as Ziggy for me but some songs here I know and like!
Pretty standard Bowie?
2.5
Relaxing to listen to.
Some good songs . I found some parts boring though.
Pretty dense Bowie here, covering some interesting ground. I wouldn't consider it in my list of top Bowie albums for me, but it is undeniably Bowie. You're not going to hear a "Greatest Hits" track on here, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth a listen.
Enjoyed this. Fave song - Wild as the Wind
On first listen and paying attention to lyrics, I just heard lots of repetition; on second listen, I heard great guitar in the long opening title track, nice funk in Golden Years (the only song I knew) and beautiful interplay with bass and piano in Word on a Wing. Bowie reportedly said this album was about the stations of the cross, a concept with which I'm not familiar. Decent music, though, and not as wildly experimental as some of his other stuff.
Word on a wing favorite song
6/10… art rock / *1976
This wasn’t bad but I feel Bowie has better albums. His treatment of Wild is the Wind was nice.
Vibes: 2 Instruments: 4 Production: 4 Emotional Value: 3 Storytelling: 2 AC: 0 Stand Outs: Golden Years, TVC15 Overall: 3 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The songs felt a little repetitive, but I thought that the cover of Wild is the Wind was pretty sick. Also, dig the saxophone thing in TVC15 :)
This is good. And Bowie’s sound is iconic. But this challenge is making e realize I don’t need to love every album made by an artist that I admire. So far, I haven’t heard a Bowie album that didn’t have some misses. But, in fairness, I should listen to this again before settling on a 3.
Love a 10 minute title track opener
I don't get it. I think Bowie did better stuff before and after. It's a transition album that feels like a transition, setting up what comes later. A segue album?
“It’s not a side effect of the cocaine I’m thinking it must be love” by Fall Out Boy Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Great chunky piano.
A few great Bowie songs. Great piano music in last song. Classic Bowie.
Not my favourite of Bowie’s music, but still interesting. I don’t think I’d return to it
great vibes,
more like stasis to stasis by David Bore-ie music: hated. (⌐■_■)
I don’t know about this one. Golden Years does a lot of heavy lifting. I didn’t hate the rest of it or anything, but a sub-40 minute album shouldn’t feel like it has filler in the way this one does. The piano ballad stuff is kinda stinky. This is a generous 3.
De eniwsa Tracks: Word on a wing
Este album sería mejor si David Bowie hubiese cantado menos tbh. Sorry guy
Fun good album. Just not for me I think. But have to admit golden years is a banger.
q timing pra eu receber esse mds RIP DB FAVS (top 3): golden years, word on a wing, wild is the wind menções honrosas: TVC15 compraria o vinil: nossa o álbum é curtinho (de quantidade de tracks) e eu nem percebi!!! bahbahdoh. sinceramente? um álbum bem básico, acho q mais por ser assim curtinho... nota final: 3/5
probably his least good album imo
Bowie is art, but this isn’t my favorite of his.
Solid, even as a non fan
Bom disco!
David Bowie made me gay, I've been meaning to read that book actually.
It was a good album, however the songs weren't my personal favourites. I really liked the last song on the album Wild is the Wind.
I can picture myself listening to this at home while reading or having coffee. Great vibes but don’t know if it amazed me but i think i’ll have to listen it more
interesting bowie project. didnt love it but i enjoyed the music. really short!
Mad respect to bowie but not my genre.
MORE BOWIE AHHHH it's still Bowie so high floor, it was fine
David Bowie being a legend as it is and recognized by his work worldwide. I understand now why everyone likes him. He portrays in his album a lot of emotion and playfullness and also experimentation of instruments.
You wonder if Bowie just woke up one day with a particular sound in his head and went 'yes, this will be the next album'. I liked this well enough, not sure I can see myself revisiting it. Standout track: TVC15. I wasn't expecting to hear a voice repeatedly urging me to transition, nor for that voice to be Bowie's, but here we are.
Mid asf. Not bad thi
It’s Bowie! There so much of him! But it’s good. I like this
Totally okay
Listened on the drive home from Hecla. Liked his vocal range. Nice and short. Don't have a great comparison point because I don't know much of his other stuff. Didn't blow me away overall. Good record though!
Not my favorite Bowie album tbh. This was just ok, I didn’t mind it but nothing stood out to me.
It’s very good but I didn’t *love* it
A very Bowie album. The lead track blows and is a 10 minute long mess of space sounds and noise which kills the vibe but the other songs are solid, but not blow away. Would give 3.5
Bowie slightly more experimental. The last 5 minutes of the title song were great, first 2 minutes were a waste. I’d give this 3.5 but I wouldn’t listen to the album as a whole - there were some good ones that I’d listen to though
Favorite song : Stay
I don’t think David Bowie has made the same album twice. This was good highlighted by Golden Years.
Definitely original. Not a lot of sonic enjoyment for me personally. “Stay”’was the highlight
It sounds too 80s
love bowie, this isn't my favorite album though
Heard it before. I'm glad I got a good album for my birthday. And from a fellow left handed Capricorn! It's not some massive Bowie favourite for me but it's solid and you gotta appreciate that it's quite short too. Straight to the point 3/5
3/5 - simpático
A good, solid Bowie album.
certain moments of brilliance but the mix can be too murky. can't seem to get into bowie.
david bowie is pretty good, but i don’t feel anything special about this album. some funky stuff, some mellow stuff. it’s still great because it’s david bowie, but nothing feels too out there. idk. favourite track “wild is the wind”
A bit of a crooner release by Bowie. Golden Years and TVC 15 are the tracks you'll remember and maybe the Alomar guitar on Stay but the other songs are a bit less memorable that some of his work. Goold album nonetheless.
It has been nine years since I first listened to this in my initial journey to listen to every Bowie album. I remember it being a departure from his previous couple of albums, but thinking it was fine. I still think it's fine.
Favorite songs: Station to Station, Golden Years
I liked it way more than i thought i would , i will add some songs to playlist but omg it is really long. I don’t like Wild is the Wind. my favorite is golden years and stay.
Not my favourite Bowie album, very uneventful for me. Not much nonsense, nothing interesting in the instrument value(compare to other Bowie albums, otherwise very interesting)
6/10 УРААА БОУЇ онеслі не люблю такі альбоми які ніби короткі але всі пісні на дохуїща секунд особливо ніхуя нее змінюється під час ~6 хвилин пісні and i start to get bored with the album overall
It was fine! Good tunes. Didn’t finish it.
Not terrible for David Bowie, this could play in the back ground.
Another ambitious set from the Thin White Duke that has its share of hits and misses. "Golden Years" is outstanding; "TVC 15" is good but a little tame (do yourself a favor and seek out the SNL performance of this song, which provides the muscle this version is lacking); the title track is also good though it takes a bit of time get up to speed. The material on the rest of the album is not particularly compelling, despite the fact that the performances by Bowie's backing musicians are uniformly solid throughout.
Nice
Really enjoy the tv song aha Before this golden years and the outerspace song were the only Bowie songs I knew, I enjoyed this album.
It’s good
*1976 *Only 38 mins long but 8+ mins is one song… *Some good stuff, especially Golden Years. *Enjoyable listen, but not anything particularly memorable. RATING - 6.5/10
I only knew “Golden Years,” a classic. Bowie is a musical genius, he brings interesting touches and artistry to all he does. I didn’t really connect with the other tracks on a first listen, which I’m learning is often a challenge for me. I read reviews after that this is considered among his best works, despite his drug addiction at the time. But for me, on a single listen, it was regrettably just a high 3.
Please give us the best of Bowie.
I understand the music is good but it didn't impact me much
Fav songs: stay and golden years
This has been my favorite of the Bowie suggestions so far. That's not exactly saying a lot, as I've found the first few disappointing. But I did think this was pretty good as a whole album. That may be what elevates it for me- it felt complete in a way the others didn't. While they may have had a good/great couple of songs, they weren't impressive otherwise or as a whole. This one is pretty much at a consistent quality all the way through, without anything dipping below good. Perhaps that is related to the limited number of songs on it (only 6 tracks), though the album is a fairly standard length (38 mins). Either way, he avoided having any bad songs bring it down. I'm not able to consider this one great, but I did like it well enough. I know there is more Bowie to come, so I think there might be better efforts from him on the horizon. For now, I am content to say I enjoyed this one. Overall: 3.3/5
Stay, wild is the wind and changes are my standout tracks. The rest of the album is a bit too honky tonk for me.
I have mixed feelings about David Bowie. Some of his material is timelessly brilliant; yet I’ve never really bought into the cult-like worship of him that some seem to hold. Having seen documentaries about him in the years since he died, I warmed to his personality (despite the silly fascist-flirting period he went through in his drug-ruined 1970s, around this time of this album). It seems to me he was a very well-read, thoughtful, and essentially generous person, with a quick sense of humour. He took himself less seriously than many took him. But quite a lot of his music/lyrical content is inward-looking and not especially penetrable. Station to Station falls in that category to me, but I thought it sounded better (and, to be fair, more accessible) on this listen than I’d recalled from back in the day.
This is probably sacrilege to many people, but apart from Station to Station and Golden Years I found Bowie's voice a little too flat. He has a strong voice when he wants to use it, e.g. on the first two tracks but elsewhere I was a little underwhelmed. That's a shame because the music accompanying him was good.
Well, today I got one of the 134 Bowie albums on the list. But I actually kinda liked this album. Opening track intro is beautifully written. Golden Years is actually better than I remembered. And it’s not too long. Still find Bowie’s voice not my thing but this was enjoyable overall
Very 70s, good Bowie but probably not my favorite album.
Definitely the sound I think of when I think Bowie. Has a lot of the sounds that I associate with the late 70s, early 80s. Pretty short album with only six songs, but each song is a bit longer bringing the album to a 38 minute run time. Nice break up of genre for me, most of my music these days is pretty heavy drums, rock, metaly music. Disco and funk were the words I was looking for, those are the genres that influenced a lot of this album. Apparently he does not remember making the album but it did happen to be his highest charting album and was a big influence for a lot of other artists. He discusses wanting to get out of the bright light that is fame while actively being in it. Rating: 6.4/10 Favorite song: TVC15
nothing to talk about
Not my favourite but not bad. Songs had a really driving feel all the way through and the production was excellent but not enough catchiness for me to come back
Stay - album highlight
Interesting mix of soulful/exotic music with introspective lyrics pondering Bowie’s religion/outlook on life. Some songs go on for a while long, but overall pretty good
I suppose I should have expected that a David Bowie LP would be coming sooner rather than later – the odds of one of his nine Book Albums showing up within the first 100 generations were greater than 50% and I'm currently at #91. Even so, the moment caught me by surprise on an otherwise unassuming Sunday! Expectations are an interesting thing because I feel like they can make or break a listening experience. I'm much more likely to positively rate an album that I had an unexpectedly good time with (take yesterday's Pentangle album, for example) than an album I expected to love from the get-go. Case in point, Station to Station is a good listen that suffered under the weight of it being my first David Bowie album. I've been waiting for this moment for such a long time and have seen so much praise thrown Bowie's way that no LP was ever going to live up to what I imagined it would be – the 38 minutes of music came & went and I just had an overwhelming feeling of "yeah, that was decent." I probably should have learned my lesson after I had a similar experience with Prince's Sign o' the Times just a few weeks ago, but I suppose I can't control the way my brain processes these things. At the same time, I could mentally fall back on that one being Prince's lowest-rated Book Album and that's not the case here – only two of Bowie's remaining eight are rated higher than this one. If there's a positive takeaway to all of this, it's that Station to Station isn't considered one of David Bowie's career-defining albums outside of this community (at least, not to my knowledge) – I don't see it being talked about nearly as much as as his first three book albums. If the Generator had given me Ziggy Stardust first and I felt the same way I do now, that might have seriously taken the wind out of my sails. If STS had to be sacrificed in order to recalibrate my expectations for my next Bowie album, I suppose it was a worthy cause! Highlights: Station to Station, Golden Years, Stay
Bowie's good. Golden Years is my favorite, title track is legendary but not a personal classic the way it is to some, and the rest are alright. do have to give some credit for just how ahead of the curve this one is, even down to the cover art. deserves to be one of the 1001? likely so
- Sigh… just found out he was another pedo, possible SA'er, and apparently wanted a fascist leader in England.. I thought I liked his personality and hits more than his body of work, but now I guess all I like is the hits. I typically find his albums a lot to sit and listen to - more proggy or jazzy than I like. This one seems more easygoing than most... it can feel very Roxy Music in parts. - Some nice instrumental support on the songs - guitar and keys, especially. - The thing that I like least about this album is that many of the songs are too long without evolving enough. I like the hit, Golden Years, but the repeated wah-wah-wah effect becomes a lot, especially at the end. (that said, that was some great whistle tone!) - Station to Station is okay, but also too long. I like how the beginning kind of hints at Golden Years (though it goes on so long at the start). When the lyrics kick in, and the poppy second half takes hold, I start to enjoy it more, but then it goes on too long again, without evolving at all. I’m not really sure the first and second half of the song really go together. - I love the W x x W songs. - I hate TVC15 - other than the piano, it feels like a joke to me. I also could do without Stay, and two songs is a pretty big portion of a short album.
I think i miss the point of this music i dont understand it
Pleasantly surprised by this album which I didn't know existed before this. Though that's not to see I knew all about his discography anyways. But I hadn't heard any of these songs before. A good album to listen all the way through to. None of the individual songs stood out to me as a highlight that I'd want to listen to on its own.
Not my favorite of David Bowie's album but it was pretty good overall. I think "Stay" is my favorite song off the album, it just resonated with me.
Long and Bowie
"Golden Hour"is on this album. Overall, it sounded good but it didn't wow like Ziggy Stardust did.
It’s…fine? I don’t want to hear it again. His delivery does nothing for me.
3.5/5
Not my favorite Bowie, liked the title track
not bad
Bowie had another persona for this album, The Thin White Duke, which was a stark contrast to the flamboyant, colorful Ziggy Stardust I learned about in the Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars Bowie album. The Duke is a much darker and more sinister character. Dressed in a minimalist sleek blazer, white shirt and black trousers, The Thin White Duke comes across as cold, detached, and obsessed with control and power. It’s still a theatrical album compared to the previous album, but it’s far more melancholic, heavy, cold, dark, and direct. It's much more my style, since it’s less flamboyant and extravagant. I’d say the sound leans toward a fusion of art rock, avant-garde and krautrock (which is experimental rock music that developed in West Germany in the early 60's and 70's. Even though it’s quite a short album it’s dense and sets a very specific mood. The album cover is actually very artistic, and I think it perfectly matches the elegant, dark sound of the album. I love the centered black and white image on a white background, with the red capitalised text spaced tightly together. My favourite tracks are Station to Station, Golden Years, and Stay.
Pretty good. Some funky tunes, first album experience. Weirdly sounds like someone doing an impression of Bowie its so Bowie.
Another good album by Bowie. Nothing too weird. Like many of his albums, only one single from it: "Golden Years"
First song was nice but the other ones were usual songs from 70's.
73/100 some groove and colors but i must revisit
I get that it's a classic, but it's just fine to me.
I liked. First song was best, really edged me nice. The rest was good and jammy but a little unengaging.
2.9 I don’t know Bowie super well, but I guess I was surprised to hear an album like this. Title track was great, but wasn’t super enthused after that. Nothing was bad, but most of the album was fairly forgettable. Despite all this I still enjoyed it as a listen and am glad I finally got a bit deeper into his catalog
I consider myself a fan of David Bowie's music, based on his hits/popular songs - but I've never listened to a full album. I suspect my expectations going in were too high based on his reputation (including his prominence on 1001 albums) - but this was a disappointment. Excellent musicianship, well produced, totally solid songs. But also a bit...ho hum. Perhaps the album had a bigger impact in its time because of the ways Bowie was adopting personae and with this album being the formal introduction of the Thin White Duke. But that has no impact on me now, frankly (or if it does, it is negative...given that the character was a fascist). So standing on its own musically, it was a nice listen but nothing I'd ever find remarkable.
3.1 2x london to ATL plus Marta
I guess I'm a Bowie greatest hits guy. The songs I like, I really, really like, but there's a lot of filler in between. Probably this makes me shallow.
I really was not understanding the album and thought this was just niche music tastes from the 70s, but I started liking it around TVC15 and Stay.
Not his best but fun
“The Thin White Duke” - pretty funny. 3/5
prob like a 2.75
Okay, getting a run of Bowie and quite glad to hear the evolution and also get a better sense of his catalogue. Been surprisingly underwhelmed so far… …I enjoy the different periods and personas through his work. 6 tracks and 40 minutes feels a bit of a flex! Enjoying this more than the previous albums so far. Didn’t give it undivided attention but enjoyed it, without being wowed. (3.5)
Surprised to see this one rated so highly, I thought it was just okay. Stay is a banger though.
Pretty average by his very high standards
Interesting music but I didn’t feel connected to it at all
David Bowie's 3rd highest rated album on rateyourmusic.com. And he has a lot of albums! Blackstar (2016) is 2nd highest. So excluding Blackstar which is an outlier (makes sense why it's so high though), it becomes his 2nd highest rated. Wow! After one listen I don't appreciate why it is so acclaimed. It definitely requires more listens from me to see why
One of my least favourite Bowie albums from his good period. A short album that still feels like it drags. Really no standout Bowie songs here and I actively dislike Golden Years. He’s got like 8 other albums on this list, I could have done without this one.
Decent album. Nothing stood out for me.
M'Eh, not great
The album is too short.
Mixed.Enjoyed some of it...some pretty dire
Huh, this was one of the Bowie personas I was not familiar with. Even based on the title and the tracks, seems like this is a transitional album into his later era. I was hoping that loving 2001's Knight's Tale (RIP Heath) would have me loving "Golden Years" again, but it was not as sparkly this time in the context of listening to the entire album. I get that Bowie was super prolific, but he always had a large team behind him and I feel like he would do covers as filler tracks, like "Wild is the Wind", which is ok, but I don't think does justice to Nina Simone's original. Speaking of, how is this our group's FOURTH Bowie album but we haven't been graced with Nina Simone yet???!!
Don't get me wrong, I think this is a good album. But I think that maybe Thin White Duke Bowie isn't for me. I much prefer Berlin-era Bowie. There are a few good songs (TVC15 springs to mind), but the rest were just okay and I probably wouldn't come back to this one.
Hm Wild is the Wind is a pretty song.
Classic biwie
I like the funkier side sneaking out. Has its moments but overshadowed by his other albums. 3/ 5
not bad but kinda repetitive. was hoping it would be my thing but isn't rlly. stay was good i guess
⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1001 ALBUMS- # 90 The Thin White Duke arrives to The Station 😱. Surviving at the time of recording merely on a diet of 🌶️, 🥛 and cocaine, Station to Station is David Bowie at a crossroads — artistically, psychologically, and spiritually. And yet, out of this chaos, Bowie created one of his greatest and most mysterious works — an album that fuses funk, soul, European electronic minimalism, and esoteric mysticism, all cloaked in the persona of the Thin White Duke: a cold, fascistic, soul-draining aristocrat. 🎧 Classic Track: Golden Years 🎧 Deep Cut Gem: Word On a Wing 🎧 Personal Favorite: Stay 🎧 Memorable Standout: Station to Station Despite Bowie’s physical and mental breakdown during this period, Station to Station is incredibly tight, controlled, and ambitious. It’s grand, polished, and intense — partly due to the session band he assembled. Bowie fuses Funk and soul, Krautrock and minimalist electronics, Art rock theatrics and proto-industrial rhythm and European cabaret and existentialism. 🖼️ Album Artwork: Portrait of A Duke At its heart, Station to Station is a record about a man in crisis, seeking salvation — not through religion alone, but through art, ritual, control, and movement. Bowie, buried in occultism and cocaine, finds himself caught between intellectual belief systems (Kabbalah, Gnosticism, Crowley) and a visceral longing for grace. This tension between mysticism and machinery, sincerity and pose, defines the album’s mood. While the album is a highly influential creative landmark in Bowie’s career, at only six tracks with one of which being a cover, it’s a stretch for me to consider this album a fully formed LP.
Do so much cocaine that you get paranoid. In that paranoia you go on some messed up diet that causes you to get uncomfortably thin. So you rebrand yourself “The Thin White Duke” and make a record. Which ultimately contains one monster hit, Golden Years, and a bunch of cocaine induced nonsense.
The fourth of nine Bowie albums, and this one's more proof that nine is excessive. Ziggy Stardust, Blackstar, and either Low or Heroes is really all you need to get the full idea of Bowie. If you want to listen to more before you die, he made twenty-six albums. Three is a fine sample. Maybe it's the fact that this is the sixth overall Bowie album of listened to in my lifetime (iirc), but I'm running out of things to take note of in these albums. TVC15 was good, I guess. Of the 4 I've gotten so far, this is the least noteworthy. Heroes and Blackstar were incredible, Hunky Dory and The Next Day were bad, and this one is somewhere in between. A perfectly surface-level review for a perfectly surface-level Bowie album.
Fine album. Subpar for classic Bowie. 6.0
Generally like David Bowie, but wasn't overly taken with this one.
Experimental; traditionally Bowie.
Very listenable but I can't handle a whole album of Bowie!
Really short album
Golden Years a stand out track.
Fine. Golden Years was good. Not his worst stuff.
Bit depressing, still good
Besides Golden Years, the title track is OK, Stay has a good funky, rocking groove but still misses the mark. The rest is meh.
Decent album. Pretty much more of David Bowie, but not as exciting. 3/5
Not as impressed with this one
One good song, the rest kind of annoying
Pretty good
I don't think Bowie can miss. Favourite Track(s): Stay Least Favourite Track(s): Station to Station
Pretty decent, not the best Bowie I've heard though
Ned nome wels rächt guet zom tetel vom Albom passt, sondern au wels eim ziit ged imne Albom azcho ond sech druf z freue. Trotzdem verstohni emmer no ned ganz, wieso mer das Albom i sone Liischte ibaut. So hani also chli de Idrock öbercho dass de Bowie eifach 38 Minute chli öppis am omesenge esch was i mine Ohre halt scho ned so s meischterwärch esch. Trotzdem fendi de Stil no rächt guet. Es esch weder guetnachtmusig no gods eifach drom möglechst luut z si.
always enjoy listening to bowie
Enjoyable but more subdued in a way than a lot of his other stuff. 3.5
Love Bowie but not always his full albums but this one was pretty good
Golden Years haters need to suck it! It wasn't the album I needed this morning but it was easy to listen to.
Honestly, largely forgettable. Love Golden Years, the rest of the songs are enjoyable but uninspiring.
I’m beginning to think it’s his voice that is the issue
I wanted to like it but it was just ok
Not a bad record, but nothing really stood out to me. Not one of Bowie's best, but still an enjoyable listen.
Easy to listen to
On one hand it's not my usual jam at all on the other i was impressed by the 10 minute intro song and despite my reservations it did make my drive home into a boppy time thanks bowie
it was ok, not my favorite.
Damn, this is my seventh Bowie album. Granted, most of those were quality, but I was just a bit shocked by the volume here. Anyway, I don't seem to know much about this album in particular. Looks like it has the single "Golden Years", but that's about all I know. I wasn't aware that Bowie was in that bad of a spot in the lead up to (and during) this album's creation. Also the start of the "Thin White Duke", Bowie's short-lived persona of that time. This persona has been described as a "hollow man", but also one who "sang songs of romance with an agonized intensity". Pretty accurate given the album's content I guess, but things are also quite varied here despite the length. Funky, artsy, poppy, with room for some ballads too. For some reason though, things didn't reach me in a super profound way here. This just didn't feel as impactful or memorable as some of Bowie's other albums (and I've been exposed to A LOT in the last 20 months or so)
A perfectly serviceable David Bowie album with nothing that really stood out for me one way or the other.
I liked it but it just failed to grab me for some reason. Was enjoyable as a background listen but just nothing really stood out. Because of this I also struggled to pick a favourite and least favourite song. I found them all pretty enjoyable. Fav song: TVC15 Least fav: Station to Station
Meh to ok. 3
3.5 stars
I guess it's pretty good. Bowie has some amazing stuff but I do think he is a bit overrated especially with how many albums of his are on here. Not a bad album and I like the succinctness of it, but did not have much staying power with me at least
What is it with older albums having multiple 6 minute songs, I love bowie but this ain’t it. The album only gets going with TVC15 which is the only song that I would consider worth a second listen. That isn’t to say the music is bad, it just drags. The sort of music you’d put in the background of a bar scene in a gangster film
bravo!
Amazing album and the birth of the Thin White Duke, and the springboard album to move production from LA (where this album was recorded) to Germany - where the Berlin trilogy will occur.
I can appreciate rock and roll, even if I’m not a huge David Bowie fan. The intro of Station to Station was slightly irritating but I guess I can see what he was going for. I just usually like when people get right into the music, I’m not a huge fan of listening to just noise for 2 mins straight. Stay is my favorite song on this album but I probably wouldn’t seek it out to listen to it again. Overall not my favorite but also not the worst. Solid 6/10
I had such high hopes for this! There are David Bowie songs that I love and grew up listening to. The music was great, I love how unique the 70s-80s era was. My complaint is that I quite literally didn’t understand a single word of what he was singing. Is it bc he’s British?
