A great late album entry
Could be his most sincere and endearing album. I felt such innocence in Dylan in this one. The flow and grooves and almost Cash-esque singing packaged made it enjoyable from beginning to end.
Atmospheric album that is typically Dylan although, especially lyrics wise, falls short compared to his older stuff and is way too long
Mix of absolute heart breaking classics and a bit too much rhythm and blues.
A bit of blues, a bit of roots rock, a bit of soul, and maybe even a bit of country. All of it is touched with the dust of a road worn band, and the fuzz of distortion and reverb. I really enjoy the overall sound of the album. It's a mostly subdue and introspective album that maintains the lyrical poignance that you would expect from Dylan. Standing way out from the crowd on this album is the track 'Make you Feel My Love'. It's a gem of a love song that I'm surprised I've never heard come across before (either original or covered). Whoa is me, and my musically sheltered life.
Lots of 4s and 5s for the Dylan album on this list and this is a solid 4, could possibly creep to 5 with a few more listens but either way it's on the list to revisit. Fave: Not Dark Yet, Highlands

Not my type of thing and just got really bored by the end. Who knew the original ‘To Make You Feel My Love’ was so bad.
Great storytelling. A deep album.
While refreshing to hear Bob with a bit more instrumentation and production around him, it's quite frustrating when he does absolutely /nothing/ with it. This isn't a 1-star LP (that's reserved more for albums I feel antipathy towards), but it's close due to committing the cardinal sin of any media: being boring. None of the instrumentals on this thing go anywhere or make any statements, which leaves Dylan's cig-decimated vox to pick up the slack (spoiler: they don't). There's no narrative or melodic excitement to be found here, and closing things out with 16 minutes of monotony is the ultimate frustrating footnote.

I couldn't enjoy this album. Some of the songs start out nice enough, but as soon as Dylan starts singing, it ruins the music for me. His voice doesn't mix well with the music. At all. Even having Daniel Lanois as a producer (clearly recognizable) doesn't help. And much of the material is based on the blues, which is off-putting as well. 2/5
Is any song different than any other song? Honestly could have had one consecutive track 1 hour and 12 minutes long and it would have accomplished the same thing. I don't really listen to lyrics, so whatever insightful philosophy Bob is singing to us all is lost on me. The album isn't bad... just really repetitive.
Magnificent output from Bob once again. He's just such an impressive artist, growing and changing with the times but also steadfast with his outstanding poetry and storytelling. It's what we love and expect from him. And it's his 30th studio album! He's a prolific artist who continues to create without ever becoming dull or irrelevant; instead he's only gotten better and better at his craft as the time passes. Unlike some of his contemporaries *cough* rolling stones *cough cough* who still write embarrassingly immature songs well into their twilight years. This is a deep, brooding, introspective masterpiece.

First time listen although I have many Dylan albums I haven't heard this one before. Some interesting tunes on this late 90's outing, not least, of course "Make You Feel My Love" (which is far more creepy when sung by a man than it is when sung by Adelle for example) I like the arrangements which are stripped back and, I feel, reminiscent of earlier Dylan fare. I liked "Not Dark Yet" "Standing In a Doorway" "Cold Irons Bound" and of course "Make You Feel My Love". Good album but would be in the lower reaches of the 1001 for me I'm afraid.
Bob Dylan is something unique. His music is build differently and I enjoy it. Not really a song that stand out for me, but a good album as a whole.
Very bluesy. A few songs sound like Tom Waits. Not a lot stood out when it was playing as work background music.

I'm hit or miss with Bob, but this was a nice, bluesy listen.
I've never been a great fan of Dylan and this album did nothing to change my mind. That said it was a smooth, soulful album full of the things you would expect from Dylan. Nothing to write home about but worth a listen.
Gritty and funky, sad and even silly at time – a true career renaissance after 29 records and a stage setter for the sprawling and even weirder work to come in the decades that followed. There's a direct link from this record to Rough and Rowdy Ways! I'm a Lanois fan and love the atmospherics, but get the criticism of some of the production choices. Several of these songs that I turn to time and again, but a few mehs make me round down to 4 from 4.5. Maybe a slightly shorter record would have been better.
A fun listen
Middling for Dylan but Make me feel your love has been covered in infinitum
Grade A songwriter but I feel like this is one of those albums you have to listen to a couple of times before it really sinks in
I haven't heard Dylan's 80s albums, but the fact that this was considered a comeback from those suggests to me how bad they were. Well enough produced, I suppose, but the songs are allowed to crap on unnecessarily (only two out of 11 songs run under five minutes), old Dylan has always sounded to me like a shitty parody of young Dylan, and the whole thing is 73 minutes of merciless self-indulgence. I finally abandoned it halfway through "Highlands".

Not Dark Yet is an all time classic, rest is good but the blues/roots stuff gets weary
It’s a genuine thrill to hear comeback Dylan sounding as poetic as ever with a fine backing band and some tracks (Not Dark Yet) as good as anything he’s ever written. But the production is lousy, losing the vocals in too much echo, rendering Dylan’s voice as just one more instrument in the mix, depriving us of the subtleties, emotions and imperfections in his voice. Still, not enough to spoil a fine album, and interesting to hear a mellower, maturer Dylan.

75 albums in and this is the first Dylan I've been given. Interesting that it is relatively recent. I saw Dylan in concert in the late 80's, one of my favorite (at the time) bands was opening for him at the concert venue where I worked for a summer. I actually took the night off so I could just watch. I also remember Rod Stewart, though I only heard that one since I was working. Which I mention only because I was just served Every Picture Tells a Story. Anyway, let's check out 90's Bob. First impression: sounds like Bob Dylan but better. Obviously he's always been a consummate songwriter but his voice cut a little too sharp. Not on this album. That edge has been blunted by, one would presume, pain and years and love gone wrong. I don't think I've heard any of these songs before. But they all speak to me. Especially Standing in the Doorway. It's not dark yet, but it's getting there.

I know Bob Dylan isn't for everyone but I'm a huge fan and his lyricism is undeniable. His songs never fail to make me feel. He is an American folk icon for a reason and this wasn't even my favorite of his albums. Outstanding songwriting and moving music
I didn't enjoy any part of this album. Nothing about it interested me or made me want to keep listening to it or come back to it.
I get that Bob Dylan is a renowned lyricist (and for good reason) but his vocals are atrocious. There’s some cool bluesy vibes to this but otherwise I will never listen to this again. Or any Dylan for that matter.
I enjoyed the album. It was a bit long for my taste, but I liked this better than some of the popular Bob Dylan songs out there. Very chill.

I am NOT a Boy Dylan fan but this is a great album!
Finally, my first full Bob Dylan record! And it was… mixed. The songs that I liked, I absolutely loved. Not Dark Yet may be a contender for my favorite Dylan song now, and Cold Irons Bound is a banger. Most of the back half of the album really did vibe with me. Which is why it’s such a shame I found the first half of the record so unengaging. I know lyrics tend to be the primary focus with this artist, and they were good, but lyrics alone don’t make or break a record for me no matter how good they are. Most of these songs just felt dull, unexciting, and honestly until the back half of the record I was very worried that Dylan was just going to completely flop for me. I think one of the biggest issues was the production: when I think Bob Dylan, I think raw and cutting, and the cloudy filters over his voice surrounding everything really break a big part that attracts me to his sound. Ultimately a big mixed bag, but enough good to make it okay. I hope his other albums stand up stronger overall.
Waffling album, sometimes an old man who is too tired and sometimes a rugged sound I don't quite expect. I'm more excited for earlier Dylan.
A really good late period album from Bob Dylan that showcases fantastic songwriting throughout. Folk music can be hit or miss for me, but this is one of the better ones. Favorites: "Standing in the Doorway", "Trying to Get to Heaven", "Make You Feel My Love"
A very soulful and darker Dylan album than normal. A bit older here and his voice is starting to show. The songs are pretty easy going and the instrumentals are always great. Not too many songs that are memorable though and it feels pretty middling. 6.4/10
Bom, mas o Dylan tem melhores.
I like Dylan generally so this album was kind of an easy listen for me. I even like his aged gravelly voice. But I have to admit that most of the songs on this record don't really stand out to me. There is some good stuff and then a lot of stuff that just isn't very memorable - kind of a sameness to it. Still, enjoyable latter day Dylan record.
Out of ear, out of mind
This was fine. I can get into his earlier stuff more though. Saw Dylan live twice, and they are both on the short list of worst performances I've ever witnessed. But I guess that is what you get when you see someone 50 out of their prime.
I found this to be a really listenable Dylan album. The Lanois production is clearly divisive amongst critics, but I like it. I luiek the weird spaciousness. it is heavily processed (he never met a reverb he didn't like), and yet keeps an analog feel. I like the grit in Dylan's voice. Some critics find some of the lyrics/songwriting a bit simplistic, although most of their ire seems directed at To Make You Feel My Love, which is well on the way to becoming a modern standard. Heaven forbid that a Dylan song should be accessible that anyone might like it! There is a reason this is Dylan's highest selling album ever. And coming nearly 40 years into his career, good on him.

Pretty heavy and one paced. I don’t think this is classic Dylan.
I went to school with a special needs kid with the unfortunate surname of "Bott". From his teen years on, he had a croaky rasp of a voice, and would greet everyone with a "how's it going?" in that voice. A voice which is EXACTLY the same as good ol' Bobby D's voice on this album. So, try as I may (and have tried several times over the years), I just can't hear it for what it is.
As much as I love Bob Dylan, I feel like this era of Dylan (Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times) is pretty overrated as critics were desperate for something to latch onto with Dylan after a string of duds following Oh Mercy. These late-era albums aren't bad per se, but if they are the highlights, his career was definitely in decline at this point. Still, after dozen or so actually great albums Dylan has released, he's earned quite a bit of leeway.

As with many albums on this list, this was fairly pleasant, but not outstanding. Is it bad to say that I prefer the Adele version of Make You Feel My Love?

Class as usual from Bob but not as keen on the later gravelly vocals
Really like his raspy voice and song writing. It is quite a dark album but a very enjoyable listen. "Make You Feel My Love" is a beautiful song.

not his best, not the worst
I saw Bob Dylan at the Breslin Center in 2004. It was bad. His voice was like gargling gravel. Ok, it was never excellent. But whatever. The real problem is seeing Bob Dylan play his electric songs with a bunch of studio musicians. The pristine approach that pros take to performing music has a way of sucking the life out, IMO, when you see a legacy artist. Nobody will ever sound as good backing Dylan than "The Hawks" back in the late 60s. You had to be there. Most of us weren't, at this point. I'd never listening to "Time out of Mind." I understand after reading about it that it's considered one of his best. It's definitely the best of his records that I've heard outside his 60s peak. It sounds like a band playing together. Not studio robots. That's all I ask, Bob. Also, I like how they added chorus to his voice - or whatever that effect is. This record had me from its staccato opening on "Love Sick."
I never really dug deep into Dylan's catalog. My default impression of his music has always been the incoherent, beatnick/hippie, campfire folk vibe. I liked some of his songs, but wouldn't have considered myself a "fan" of his. This album may have changed that. It's actually a really solid dirty blues/folk album and - while he still sounds like he has gauze in his mouth all the time - his vocals are well suited to the genre. He mentions in "Highlands" that he listens to Neil Young - I'd say that influence is evident here, but still 100% Bob Dylan. Standing in the Doorway, Not Dark Yet, Cold Irons Bound, and Can't Wait were standouts for me.

This was the first time I had heard the later albums of Bob Dylan. I liked it because I like that style of blues but I’m not sure bob dylan is the best fit for it. I could just be saying that because I’m biased toward more modern blues like the black keys. Definitely not as good as his older music. Fav song: dirt road blues

Ok, I've already listened to many songs from Dylan and I always liked them. Using this list, I noted how much he is important for the music industry and for the music evolution in the last decades, even don't find anything perfect for me from his discography yet. This album is by far the best one until now. A little bit long for my taste, but a great piece of songwriting with great music.
What a vibe. This album transports you. It picks you up and drops you into the midwest in the early 20th century, pours you a Jack Daniels, offers you a cigarette and tells you it's late night tales. An album that puts the world to rights. A few tracks could have lost a minute or ten which drops a half mark, but as we don't have half marks it gets the five.
The year this album came out, I went on a long road trip around the Southwest of the USA. Wish I'd known about it then. Not that it would have made much difference, since the rental didn't have a CD player.
Some of the songs were good, but the whole thing just felt too melodically repetitive to me. Great lyrics, though.
Decent album, not his best
I was pleasantly surprised. Big fan of Dylan's earlier stuff, I didn't have very high expectations, but actually, this is a really solid album. I'm now a big fan of his more recent stuff too.

Liked this album. Certainly creates a mood. Don't think it's 9:30 Monday morning music. Enjoyed standing in the doorway. Some of the early songs are a bit dull. Fine balance between moody slow music and man talking over boring guitar like on Highlands.

'Time Out of Mind' és el disc que va encetar la història, i de pas el concepte estilístic que ha continuat emprant Dylan fins ara (novembre 2021), i és el millor de tots ells. Però dista dels seus grans discos, no només dels '60 i '70, sinó també dels millors moments dels '80 com 'Infidels' o 'Oh Mercy'. Grans temes com 'Love Sick', 'Standing in the Doorway', 'Tryin to Get to Heaven' o 'Make You Feel My Love', algun d'excepcional com 'Not Dark Yet', però també molt minutatge que baixa en molt la qualitat i rebaixa la nota mitja del disc

72 minutes of newer Dylan... Not my thing.
This was a miserable, terrible slog for the first 40 MINUTES. The last few tracks got slightly better. Not Dark Yet single handedly saves this from being a 1 star. Dylan's voice has always been an acquired taste, but in this album it's all blown out to trash. He sounds like absolute shit. If he were a new artist, this album would have NEVER been recorded.

Good album
This is the album they made it on the list? I mean , surely other Dylan albums did too, but this is an interesting album. Not Dark Yet is really the only song I am familiar with. The rest of the album is a good example of "late stage Dylan." It's good, but I wouldn't call it a must hear.

Classic Dylan. I had never listened to this before or was aware of many of the songs, maybe this is because they are ones that don't get dragged out into the hit parade. I had no idea it was from the mid-90s as some of the songs are comparable to his best. One to listen to again in a mellow moment
Bob Dylan's 30th album released in 1997, and was a return to his classic and great musical sound. Fans loved this album, considering it a comeback, and even some feel it's his best album ever. It went on to earn a platinum rating, and in 1998 at the Grammy Awards, the album won Album of the Year & Best Contemporary Folk Album. This album had a new atmospheric sound for Bob Dylan's country and blues music, which is either liked or hated by fans. I have never been a fan of Bob Dylan's music, but this was fine to listen to while I worked.

Al estilo de Bob Dylan. Bueno, pero nada más
On the opening track he says "I'm sick of love; I wish I'd never met you." Dylan is known for his cryptic lyrics but on Love Sick - not so much. The good thing about being Bob Dylan is that many very good musicians want to play with you and they end up making some gems out of your songs. Dirt Road Blues is an example. Cold Irons Bound is another example showing excellent bass. Boy, we've had a lot of Dylan albums. Of the five, this one excited me the least.
It gets off to a good start. I like the Daniel Lanois production. The arrangements and ambience of the first song are different, with the reggae guitar and moody electric piano. After that, a number of songs fall into a standard blues progression, which to me would indicate Dylan’s short on ideas. Some others remind me of his earlier songs, which is not surprising since this is his 30th album! The lyrics are not the snappiest. “I didn’t know when I saw ya’ if I should kiss ya’ or kill ya’”. His voice is toast, but still not that far off his prime, lol. I would say there are (at least) 2 or 3 Dylan albums that didn’t make the 1001 list, that I would place ahead of this.
I assume I have Daniel Lanois to thank for getting Dylan to ditch his wretched harmonica and annoying AF singing style on this album. Merci beaucoup Danny Boy! Frank Zappa also nails it in his brilliant Dylan parody in “Flakes”, if you’ve heard it you’ll know what I mean. Although this is more listenable than his 29 other previous albums I’m still not a fan. I know this is Bob Fucking Dylan so I made the effort to listen to the entire album. But that’s my point, it shouldn’t be an effort to listen to.

I find myself lost in the band despite the fact that the songs are mostly mid-tempo and fairly similar in overall feel. (Which makes "To Make You Feel My Love" kinda stand out...) I like Bob Dylan, but I’m not what most would say is a fan - but I really dig this album overall. It’s another first listen for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Bobby, but I could tell in this one that he was getting older and less exciting. I did enjoy Not Dark Yet, but these songs were so long and repetitive. If I was Bob I would have retired a long time ago and just enjoyed my ride off into the sunset. Even the album cover feels like it doesn't belong but is also completely accurate with this album. A blurry shot of the man we once knew who is out of his mind with the times of these songs.
Me one week ago, listening to Blood on the Tracks: "Oh wow, Bob Dylan did make good music after the '60s! Maybe I was wrong." Me today: "Maybe he just didn't make good music after 1975." This is tremendously boring. His voice is like a weak Tom Waits parody, which isn't good because Tom Waits is already like a goofy Leonard Cohen parody. Such a long, aimless album. Only one track on here that I enjoyed, the rest felt like I was sitting in a coffee shop trying to have a conversation over the aspiring local artist playing for the night. Wikipedia says "Time Out of Mind is hailed as one of Dylan's best albums." Whoever wrote that must work at Lids because that's nothing but cap. Dylan, I've given you two 4.5 star ratings so far, that makes this one even more disappointing. This doesn't belong here. Favorite tracks: Not Dark Yet (but maybe it should be Bob; go home). Album art: Looks like a trashy picture for a greatest hits, Starbucks compilation CD. I think my distaste for the music is seeping in here, but this is very bland. The least interesting Dylan cover I've seen so far, so it fits I guess. 1.5/5
Perfectly pleasant but bit plodding hour-an-a-quarter of blues-y Americana. Maybe you get more out of it if you listen to the lyrics? I am more of a song/melody/arrangement kind of person and I just don't think there's much happening here on that front. And the songs are so long. For me, maybe unexpectedly, the only thing that makes it stand out in any positive way is Dylan's voice. 6/10
Bod Dylan has a slow blues jam. I like Dylan,I think he's got a lot of good songs. I also think that the reason he's had so may hours as he's had the chance to take so many swings. It's not amazing but is decent easy blues background music. His voice feels tired on this one. Standout track - Highlands

This record has spent a bit of Time Out of Mind. I loved it when it came out and listened to it endlessly for a while. I enjoyed spending time with it all day today. It has been added to my regular playlists.
First listen. I think this is my favorite Bob Dylan album. This one will only get better with time. Standouts: Make You Feel My Love 3/5.
this isn't a bad album, but i was a bit disappointed given what i've come to expect from Bob Dylan. the most glaring issue is how rough his voice was by 1997 lmao, but additionally i felt that the songwriting was a lot more generic. the lyrics weren't bad by any means, but i wanted more of that classic Dylan wittiness, without which the protracted pieces feel particularly prolonged. 7/10
I listened to this from a few rooms away and didn't feel the need to listen closer. I like Dylan but this was long and not his best. 6
8/10. Good overall, really long, and started out a bit weak in my opinion. I am not sure how his production quality is still so low in the 90's, but I guess he found his style and he's sticking to it.
Last song was unnecessarily long and I didn’t enjoy the Tom Waits growl that Dylan used in some songs, but it was decent. 8/10

Dylan makes a comeback with this original album that looks back to roots and ignores the advancing technology of the late 90s. His voice has clearly aged, and the songs' subject matter reflects on that... Although not as much as the media believed following Dylan's hospitalization. The tracks are long and slow, putting an emphasis on the introspective lyrics going at their own pace. But for the mediocre songs, I kept thinking 3 minutes in, "how much longer is there?" This is a difficult thing to adjust to if you're not used to it, or if you're not in love with all the tracks which I certainly am not. Examples of songs I couldn't stand much include "Trying to get to heaven" and "Can't wait". "Dirt Road Blues" is a decent song on its own but ruins the mood. Then there's the most popular track from this album, "Make you feel my love" which is the most 90s-sounding track from this album. It's no wonder it's been covered by so many artists because it sounds nothing like a Dylan song, which cheesy lyrics and dull melody. (Adele improved the sound so much... but you can't help the lyrics.) That being said, I enjoyed just closing my eyes and listening to many of the tracks. "Love Sick" was a great opener with excellent modern production value and engaging and emotional lyrics. Most of the first half tracks were pretty good. "Not Dark Yet" is the highlight of this album, with the best vocals and lyrics, with its sound second only to "Love Sick." The rockabilly "Cold Irons Bound" is another great job, but I mostly like it for the rough sound and vocals. Not sure how it fits with the rest of the album. The closing track "Highlands" was aesthetically pleasing to just sit back and relax to. Has a swamp sound that reminds me of CCR. Overall, I think it's a really decent 90s attempt by Dylan. Some problems that could be mostly resolved by skipping a few tracks. But otherwise really great tracks that work well for the aging Dylan.
Even though it is early 90s, this still must have been a throwback album? Voice is worse than ever, music and style is dated and safe. Not convinced of any reason for this album to be on this list. Safe enough for 2 stars. Thinking of downgrading to one, as not only are the songs dull, but they are also very long. 7 minutes of generic blues? No thank you. Oh, and now covers... great. Really, why is this album in the book?

I've heard this album plenty of times and I always really enjoy it. It's dark and brooding. Love Sick, Not Dark Yet, and Highlands are all great.
Dylan is someone I should spend more time with. I think his lyrics are very good, but his music almost sounds like spoken poetry at times. Will revisit and re-listen (to this and other albums)

Love Sick into Dirt Road Blues is an excellent contrast in tones. I still don't like Bob's diction. And after a while its just the blues. Tryng To Get To Heaven is a perfect example of Bob Dylan ruining a perfectly good song with his voice. Jesus I can't stand this guy's voice. Cold Irons Bound is a good tune, which I think is the only real reason I don't give this a 1 star. Highlands is bullshit.

Before listening I wondered why this was on the list - Dylan's 30th studio album, well beyond his "prime." But I really appreciated the songwriting and heard greatness in it. Classic Dylan storytelling, and notewotlethy as a return to form after a long dry spell. You can hear him grappling with his age, and he sounds so old. Remarkable to realize that he is still releasing vital material now, more than 20 years after this album was released.
Though I'm not as big of a fan of Dylan after Desire, I must say this is quite an enjoyable record where he seems to have established a sort of template/persona of sorts for his subsequent records. How Dylan got his groove back.
Started off really strong for me but fell of a little bit as it went, not bad at all though. This is the type of Bob Dylan I haven't heard though, so definitely worth listening.
Excellent album from the latter half of Dylan's career. Daniel Lanois' production aesthetic goes really well with these songs, giving them a heavy atmosphere and mood. It's not dark yet, but it's getting there. 4 stars.

Pleasant folk/rock.
This is a highly regarded Dylan that I never really warmed to. Maybe it's the languid pace of the songs, or maybe the swampy bluesy feel that was never my thing. Maybe its the foggy atmospheric Daniel Langlois production or the old mam world-weary voice that keeps me at arms length. In any case a Dylan album that is near the bottom of the list for this Dylan fan. 2.5 🌟
July 28, 2021 I really like the gravelly texture of old Dylan voice, which feels like it fits better with some of his songwriting than young Dylan voice. He sounds jaded and cynical and wise - exactly the right person to be meditating on mortality.

Dylan becomes the grizzled old blues singer he always wanted to be. This has the themes of the Leonard Cohen album from earlier, but whereas Cohen made that album then died, Dylan made this in 97 and is still alive. I like it, I love Dylan, but I think I’d rather be listening to the blues that inspired it. Favourite track: “Not Dark Yet”

It's Not Dark Yet is an absolutely beautiful song. Dylan is someone I have appreciated without going to the well, so was glad to hear an album of his I'd never heard. I also enjoyed Love Sick, Standing in the Doorway, Can't Wait and Cold Irons Bound. 4

Vinha para este álbum com preconceito e receio, porque ouvi o Bringing It All Back Home e achei um álbum irritante e fraco. No entanto, neste álbum parece que o Bob Dylan amadureceu e deixou a harmonica de lado. Por vezes tem algumas semelhanças estilisticas com o Tom Waits. Todo o álbum ouve-se bem e mesmo tendo mais de uma hora não é algo cansativo. No geral uma agradável surpresa mesmo o problema da voz do Dylan ser irritante por vezes, mas não se compara ao Bringing It All Back Home nesse álbum era gritantemente nasal e irritante. There's a heavy atmosphere on Time Out of Mind that creates a new landscape for Dylan to explore, but he mostly sticks to standard ballads and polished blues. Some great writing here, Highlands excluded, which is exhausting and uninteresting in every conceivable way for Dylan. Fav tracks: Make You Feel My Love, Not Dark Let and Love Sick
I like this album well enough, and some of the poetry is really compelling. But I feel like most of the music is Dylan-by-numbers, vaguely bluesy rambling. Highlands is the worst offender: a 16-minute storysong where Bob complains about having to explain that he reads women authors. It may be lauded as his return to form, but I don’t think it really touches his 60s and 70s output for originality or significance. Worth it for Dylan acolytes but maybe few others. I get it, I honestly do...it’s just not my style. I actually prefer this slow bluesy rock genre Dylan to his standard rambling melodies though, so he gets a star for that. My first of many Dylan albums on this list. From later in his career, it seems as though a 90's Dylan has grown a more grizzled singing voice, giving the songs a bit more edge. Most of it is a pretty easy listen though. Nice songwriting (as expect from Bob Dylan), but never much of an impact. I think you need to be a certain kind of person to really enjoy Bob Dylan, and I'm just not that person. Overall it's a fine album.

I'm listening to Time out of Mind by Bob Dylan. It's difficult to really 'rate' an album such as this. A towering figure in music for so many years, it's hard to find a place to begin. Maybe I can start in the most superficial way possible. The songs are pleasing and I really enjoyed the first track. I recall this album coming out and listening to it at the time. I revisit Dylan fairly often and I have not returned to this one as of yet. It's pretty universally well reviewed. People talk about his voice and he is sometimes dismissed off-hand because of how he sounds. This happens to Neil Young as well. I love both artists and enjoy taking them exactly how they are with their distinct voices. I'm enjoying this very much. I'm not worrying too much about the entirety of Dylan's career when thinking about this current album. The general idea is that it's a return to form, or one of the better later period Dylan albums to come along. 'Trying to get to heaven' is a mid album highlight, and a nice accompaniment to another cube farm pandemic Monday. As the album finishes up, I'm saying I very much enjoyed it - though when jumping back into Dylan the next time, it probably wont be this.
My relationship with Dylan's discography peters out around the mid 70's - pretty much with Desire. I don't hate this, or any of the latter days stuff I've heard, but neither does it change my mind on the topic.

I couldn't connect with this album as much and I don't think it'll be one of the Dylan albums I listen to again. I think it suffers in my mind from not being "early Dylan", which is a bias

His voice makes my ears very unhappy
This is Old Dylan at his darkest and I mean that in the very best way. Dylan's voice has aged so well. Granted, his early voice wasn't the best so it's not a far trip to "better" but, even so, Old Dylan's voice is a pleasure to listen to. It feels like it has finally grown to match his powerful songwriting. The end result is an amazing piece of art that cuts hard.
This album sounds like Dylan's "I've Been to the Mountaintop" speech, and in fact, he almost died after releasing it. Thankfully, he's still around, but that does nothing to diminish the album's dark look at mortality. It's brutally honest, like any Dylan record, but this one feels moreso. Best track: Not Dark Yet
