Ok'ish
This list feels like a broken algorithm that keeps on suggesting that I might like Bob Dylan, although I've already told it multiple times that I didn't. Oh well, let's give it another try... Fortunately it's a bit more tolerable that his early works. This time Dylan doesn't feel the need to throw a tsunami of disjointed harmonica tunes at us. However, he does sound like a discount Tow Waits, and it's really hard to think of this music as relevant in any way in 1997 - to be honest, it even feels downright anachronic. But I could at least listen to the full album in one sitting without cringing. The distinct blues vibe probably helped a lot ; songs like Cold Irons Bound were reasonably enjoyable. Too bad they're sitting next to unsufferable tunes like Make You Feel My Love. I still think Dylan has a terrible voice, and that his lyrics are wildly overrated. After so many tries, I'm pretty sure I'm never gonna be a fan ; at best I won't run out of the room if someone plays his music. 4/10
Some good tunes at the start made me wonder if I liked Dylan after all but several absolute dirges later and a loss of the will to love during the final track soon ended that
Sorry Bob, but this was not it. A lot of times it sounded like he was doing a Bob Dylan impression. If this was put together by some random 50 year old instead of Bob Dylan, I don’t think it gets included.
I've said this on the other Dylan albums from this list: his songs are amazing, but mostly when they are sung by other people. As for this album, if it was by anyone else it probably wouldn't have made this list. An album from a great artist 25-30 past his prime doesn't really qualify as a must listen album typically. Dylan's voice was especially raspy and rough sounding by this time. That said, the melodies and tunes are ok. I just don't have it in me to digest the lyrics this listen. Maybe another time if I ever revisit this.

I'm not a fan of Dylan. I tried several times, but it's not for me, especially the early stuff. This is not a bad album, but it bores me a lot. I liked Not Dark Yet, but the rest I didn't care for.
2/5. Im singing. Here i am. Walking. Oh look a mangy dog. I want a leather trenchcoat. Ugh id rather listen to buddy the elf sing a christmas gram for an hour
This project has such a hard-on for Bob Dylan.
2 out of 5 I really like a few Bob dylan songs but the majority are no for me.
I rated this a three without realizing the last song would drag on for sixteen fucking minutes.
Ahh Bob, I'm sorry, I don't think I was in the right headspace for this. Some songs I enjoyed - nice vibe, melancholy - but others really dragged for me. I think I prefer Dylan when he's a bit more energetic.
It's a bit of a slog because of the length and his very old sounding vocals.
Sorry, this just wasn't for me
I wasn't feeling this one, despite the Lanlois production. I had no idea Dylan wrote Make You Feel My Love. That's a good tune!
bob dylan time out of my mind this album has nice instrumentals that you can learn from. the vocals aren't particularly my style, but they're beautiful in a few songs. stand outs track 3: standing in the doorway - it feels like rereading (or proofreading) a sad letter you're about to send to an old lover who broke you, and its beautiful. track 9: make you feel my love - cool melody and easy to get stuck in you head.
Is dit Bob zn blues album? Waarom deed Bob dit niet eerder? Million Miles klinkt goed! FAVO: Million Miles, Till i fell in love with you
tasteful harmonica for once in my freaking life. pretty dull as i always find bob dylan to be. sorry music people, i'm more of a movie guy; this is just an extra little project
I've just never done much with latter-day Dylan and this convinces me why. It's just not that good.
This album is at least 16 minutes too long, and I have a suggestion of which 16 minutes could have been cut... I can't decide how I feel about Dylan. This is the third album of his I've hit within my first 100, and I feel I've had very mixed responses to them. This one was dreary, all blended together and felt like it'd never end. I'm glad it eventually did.
not biggest fan o bob dylan
Later-era Dylan eh? He hasn't quite become completely unintelligible yet, but the signs of the "old man grunts tonelessly into microphone for 2 hours" are certainly there. I'll stick with the early stuff thanks.
I'm wasn't the biggest fan of Dylan before today and this album didn't change that. Its not a bad album in it self but its music and hos voice doesn't appeal to me.
Eh. Nah. Don't get me wrong. There's music here. It's just generally not what I want to be listening to.
I just can't take his voice seriously, I've heard it parodied too much. Did enjoy "Cold Irons Bound"
Ugh, i am not really a Dylan fan. this album was painful. I know that "Make you feel my love" is such a beautifully written song, but him singing it is the worst.
A weak comeback album from Bob. The songs were all about 2× longer than they needed to be, the content was pretty homogeneous, and really there were no standout moments. Sometimes more or less pleasant, but not enought to average up. 2.4/5 -> 2/5
"Make You Feel My Love" doesn't work with Dylan's 1997 voice. This was hailed as a return to form for Dylan, but I didn't find it nearly as interesting as his earlier stuff.
Kind of good kind of blah
Nope. Talented song writer, bad voice. Nasaly
Sigh. Wilco is on this list aren't they.
I feel like I write the same review every time of Bob Dylan, which is that I'm glad I'm old and wise enough to not feel like I have to pretend to be into Bob Dylan all that much. Like when I owned this CD 25 years ago. Make You Feel My Love and It's Not Dark Yet are good. The rest is snoozy.
It was fine, just not really my thing. Also way too long.
I find this record lifeless and a little boring.
Just wasn't feeling it. Nothing really grabbed me.
Boring asf
Boring. This man should have quit after his motorcycle accident.
Imagine if they made a new Star Wars movie, but instead of weird-looking aliens, exciting space battles and well-choreographed lightsaber fights, the whole thing was just a bunch of scenes filled with rebel commanders and empire politicians filling out reports and doing daily chores. That's this album. It's like Dylan took the earlier version of himself as a songwriter and musician, fed that version a steady diet of porridge and prune juice, made him read nothing but Reader's Digests and watch Friends reruns, and then set him loose in a Men's Wearhouse to find inspiration for some new songs. If this album were anyone but Dylan it wouldn't have made more than a ripple in the musical and cultural world of 1997, and we certainly wouldn't be writing about it today. 2 stars, I guess. I save my single star ratings for albums I don't like. It's not even that I don't like this. It was boring in '97, and it's still boring almost three decades later.
Everyone: Ughhhh. This list: more Bob Dylan.
WOW! I didn't hate this as much as the previous 10 trillion Bob Dylan albums we've suffered through! It was still shite though!
Really dull for Dylan
Don’t want to say ‘bored out of my mind’ but this was pretty bad nonetheless. The one decent song Make You Feel My Love was done better by Adele anyway.
Like if Dylan did Waits and Cash. Stark contrast to the 60s electric Dylan I listened to earlier this week, and not in a good way.
Found this incredibly slow and ponderous, the last track is a proper slog and felt like the family guy Randy Newman parody
No, just no
Pas fan de la voix de Bob, mélodies repetitives
Boring, 2/5
Bob Dylan is one of those names that I've heard of a few times, but I am fortunate to have never been cursed with actually listening to his music until today. Most other albums at least give me a reason to listen to them. Why would I listen to this? Working as a police dispatcher, often times we are given information by callers that yields nothing. It's completely useless, even if it seems like it might be important when it's given to us. I was looking forward to a good album, but like so many of our complainants at work, it turned out to be the biggest disappointment of my day. And I worked with the local SWAT team on the most boring warrant service that they've seen in a long time.
Not too bad. Most of the songs sound the same.
not a fan
Ugh how many fucking Bob Dylan records are on this list? This is 5 for me and I'm not even to 500 records yet. This album actually starts off pretty strong, I like Love Sick a lot. Not your typical Bob Dylan which is a big check in the pro box for me. I like it because he's older and his voice is gravelly and that fits this song well. Certainly because there's no damn harmonica (yet...). Yeah after the first song it falls off a cliff. It's back to normal Bob Dylan although mercifully without harmonica. Yeah I'm just not a fan. After the first song the album just drags on and on. Sorry, Bob. I get that you're a legend in your own time but I just don't agree. Please no more Bob Dylan for me. 2/5
Feels like a problematic person tries to be less problematic through sultry lovesongs
I've never really had a problem with Bob Dylan's voice, but my God this is unbearable. He doesn't even sound like himself anymore. Not only does this album feel too long, but each individual song feels like it will never end. Each song starts with some generic blues/folk riff, Bob dylan moans for 5+ minutes, and the song follows the most predictable structure. This is my 4th or 5th bob dylan album, and the only one, where I really can't see the idea. This one is bad, I'm sorry. Mid 2.
Not great
can I PLEASE stop getting Bob Dylan FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING THAT IS GOOD 😭🙏
i'm really sorry to be such a sourpuss but this could've been easily half the length. again, is it crazy for me to think music should sound good????
sorry bobby d, but this is boring as hell. 11 songs in 72 minutes? bruh. wrap it up!!!! his voice sounds like rocko from rocko's modern life. no, i will not be taking any questions. favorites: love sick, make you feel my love
Definitely bob dylan
Hay discos que me demoro en escuchar porque siento que tengo que tener el tiempo y dedicación para darles el respeto que se merecen. Pero para este disco fue procrastinación pura. De verdad que con los Blues no pasa nada por este lado.
I’ve never really listened to much more recent (and i recognise the irony of saying that about an album released nearly 30 years ago!). My issue with this album is that the music is just too polished and therefore it doesn’t feel different enough from everything else out there. The songwriting is still great and Dylan’s distinctive vocals give them some depth but as a whole it just feels a bit flat for me. That said i really enjoyed ‘til i fell in love with you’, ‘not dark yet’, ‘cold irons boun’ (which has a great boogie backing) and ‘make you feel my love’. I do however much prefer Adele’s take on the latter.
Dear Person-Who-Runs-the-Generator, If this is some sort of ploy to try and get me to like Bob Dylan, it isn’t working. Yours, Disgruntled, avid disliker Bob Dylan. PS: I didn’t think it was possible to butcher a song you originally wrote, yet here we are.
Maso
I would enjoy this so much more if it was just the instrumental parts
If some other guy sang this instead... would it still be on the list...
I mean, sounds like Dylan. It's just too long - three songs in and I was already wishing for it to end. 2/5
I can't say I've heard any of Bob Dylan's work past like the 1970s. I don't know how he does it. This really is more of the same Bob Dylan, except he's noticeably more gruff in his vocals and the blues sound is a bit swampier here. The lengthy tracks haven't gone away either, so I'm sure longtime Bob Dylan fans ate this one up. I am not among that crowd.
To get this outta the way, Bob Dylan can't sing. Even when he could "sing" he wasn't all that great at it. This bluesy album works in that way with his voice. Somebody done did break Bobby's heart & he's gonna tell you about in 5 minute+ songs that desperately needs trimming. When the songs are on they are fantastic. When they are not on, its just boring. Cold Iron Blues is great. Trying to Get Into Heaven just sounds like he rewrote Knocking on Heavens door. Decent breakup blues with long winded songs.
was on the last song and was waiting for it to end only to realize I had 10 minutes left still 💀
I walked Bob Dylan up on stage, who are you?! For real though, does *every* song have to be 10 minutes long? Bob just sounds kinda old and it overstays its welcome
Saw the length and shuddered. Three Dylan albums in the first two months of this. Not every song needs to be 5+ minutes long Bob. 16 min track to end it? Sheesh!
It was alright individually, but the longer the album went on the more nasally is sounded and I got more frustrated it just wasn't over yet. I think I can handle Dylan piece meal, not all at once
4/10 - he's a lyrical genius but the music is just boring
2 out of 5. Sixth Bob Dylan album and probably the worst of the bunch (so far) Again, another album could have taken this one's place and had a better impact.
OK.
Better than most of the early "classics" that people are astonished I don't like. I dig the heavy use of the blues here, especially when the the keys are featured. Overall it feels lazy though. Blues riffs are very basic and sterile. The songs all blend together into background music aside from a few. Still nothing I'm likely to ever listen to again.
I just can’t get into Dylan - bored out of my mind trying to get through this.
I like Bob Dylan, obviously one of the greatest living poets of our time. But goddamn, his voice after the 70s was terrible. And while I understand a singer's voice tends to weaken with age, Dylan seemed to lean into that gravelly baritone, making him sound more and more like Tom Waits (who I do not care for). The last song on the album, "Highlands" is over 16 minutes. And I'll be honest, I got about halfway through and looked how much time was left in the song, and stopped. Life's too short for me to hear a 16 minute song sung by a guy gargling gasoline and pebbles. NEXT.
I can confidently say this is my least favorite album of all Bob Dylan's albums on this 1,001 list. I guess it gets a nod because he resurrected his career with it. Can't say I understand why. His lyrics are still good but this is a snoozefest of boring tempo. His vocals are also old man snarly. When that happened to Leonard Cohen, I kind of dug it. Not here. Mind you, he has sounded much worse on earlier albums when he was younger. I'm not sure I can give it a 2; I feel like he's still Bob Dylan and that's worth something. But then I re-listened to the album and it made me frustrated and angry. This album is undeserving of a spot on this list. Sorry Bob.
This just kept dragging on and going nowhere.
This is a very boring Dylan album to me. Kind of monotone. The lyrics tell stories, at least. A special gem is Make You Feel My Love, which I had no idea Dylan wrote.
Disliked, did not feel like this was essential.
It's like Bob Dylan is purposefully being a "this is how Bob Dylan sings myeh myeh myeh" caricature a bit?
Pretty good but I still don't love Bob Dylan (2.5*)
This album did not need to be 72 minutes long.
I was surprised to see how acclaimed this album is. I was relieved when Dylan himself said he doesn't like the recording. There are some good songs on here, though I much prefer the folk ballads to the blues tracks. I feel emboldened in my feelings considering alternate takes, live performances, and songs that didn't make the record are some of the most treasured versions of these Dylan's late 90s output.
Great voice, but all of the songs kinda felt samey and didn't really tickle my song heart strings
Bob Dylan writes really good songs. Bob Dylan sings Bob Dylan Songs. I liked it more than I thought I would. The music is great, and the swampy vibe is cool. If Grant-Lee Phillips covered this album, I’d play it all the time.
not bad. doesn't really catch me though.
Ughh incluso peor que los de antes.
Long, pretentious, dull and massively overrated. Cool he gave Neil Young a shout out, but that's all there is to it.
I'm holding my head because i don't know why is this album on this list? Why is Bob Dylan so culturally impactful? I don't see the appeal. His voice is annoying, the songs are too drawn out. Thank you, next!
It's got soul, but that voice is shot by this album
It's not terrible, but if it had any other name on it than Bob Dylan, it wouldn't be on the list.
En låt var 16 minuter. SEXTON! Hade nog gillat mer om jag lyssnade på låttexter.
I realize this came out like forty years after Bob Dylan’s heyday and nobody had ever praised his vocal talent, but dang, old age really turned him into Tom Waits. And album of the year? Really? Must have had a great publicist. It’s not terrible, but it’s also not anything I’ll want to seek out again. Maybe I should watch A Complete Unknown to get the hype a little better.
Not my favorite Dylan album.
eh
Afraid I'm just not a big Bob Dylan fan and this didn't change it. Maybe I wasn't entirely fair because I was busy working but it largely blended together. Not bad but I'd probably skip most of the songs.
It was a little bit too long for me. Make You Feel My love is a good song but there are much better cover versions out there. My favourite track off this is probably standing in the doorway. I don't think this is as good as some of his other stuff.
Cold Irons Bound was good, rest was Not. Bob REALLY can't sing.
Mais kessé que ça fait sur une liste des albums incontournables? Un bon mood des fois, mais J’hais le blues.
Meh
God this album is so boring. 16 minute snoozefest for the final track, are you kidding me?
I did not find this to be enjoyable. Songs weren’t very memorable. Voice was extra Dylan rough. Should’ve left the 90s to Jakob.
EVERYONE WAKE UP A BOB DYLAN ALBUM THAT WASNT A ONE? THIS IS CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION!
When I think of Bob Dylan, I think of an acoustic folk player who occasionally plays with a full band. I was not expecting this opener "Love Sick" to have a reggae bounce while he did his best Tom Waits vocal overtop in a despondent tale of love and loss in the vein of Ween's "Buenos Tardes Amigo." Always an influencer, here we hear some of Bob's influences, such as Leonard Cohen. "Dirt Road Blues" has that unsurprisingly prescribed blues progression that has been done a thousand times before. Is it possible to copyright such a song? I'm so over it, but I don't blame Dylan directly; it's a standard, tired musical trope. He makes up for it in the more unique "Standing in the Doorway," summoning Captain Beefhart's vocals over a cozy Van Morrison astral-acoustic, three-drinks-in, warm-wooden-barroom atmosphere with all of the longing of "A Whiter Shade of Pale." Again, not what I expect from Bob Dylan, but welcome nonetheless. Sigh: "Million Miles." Another blues cliché, grinding down this worn-down road. The next two songs confirms the side-one formula of an interesting song followed by one of a blues progression. Side two opens on the right foot with "Not Dark Yet." And the following blues numbers "Cold Irons Bound" and "Can't Wait" are inspired, finally branching out of the standard 8 and 12 bar trappings on the first side. Blues done right. "Make You Feel My Love" along with "Love Sick" and "Standing in the Doorway" are my favorites here, each suspending a moment that feels comfortable and warm. The over-abundant blues progressions on the inbetween tracks bog down the album as whole, succumbing to formula rather than inspiration, as if this album was a just completing a contractual obligation. Bob Dylan is better than this.
Not trying to sound funny, but this for me is music that you put on to fall asleep to. An Americana type album with Bob Dylan doing what he does. I never could get into Bob's voice though.
No, still can't gel with Bob, 30 years after his prime. I'll admit he can be a good songwriter, but any covers of his songs are better sung.
As an ardent disliker of all things Bob Dylan, this one surprised me. Quite enjoyable swamp blues in places. Was considering a 3 rating, but that last track just droned on and on. Which gave me time to remember how much I dislike his moany voice.
Meh
Meh, I just don’t get Dylan.
Not my favorite Dylan album. Or even my third or fourth. And you KNOW I didn't listen to the entirety of Highlands.
I'm a blues guy and my enjoyment fell off pretty quickly here. Its like I was hearing more familiar blues songs but slower and less intelligible. Bob Dylan? more like Bad Dylan. stick to poetry!
Dylan's voice sounds the same on his Christmas album so it wasn't too much of a shock, but it really drags after a while
Definitely not the worst of Bob Dylan, which is to say that this is actually listenable. But still not something I would listen to by choice.
Somehow I can't see his appeal.
Sounds like his voice is shot to shit and he’s doing his best Tom Waits. Not a fan.
This is just boring. I've never been a huge Dylan fan, but this is the 5th Dylan album so far on the list, and the others have been easy 4 stars at the very least. This is just too slow and feature poor to work for me. The music is solid, but it's static - nothing changes, nothing evolves, there are no crescendos or surprises. The lyrics are obviously still interesting, but everything progresses so slowly that it's a struggle to stay focused.
It’s Bob Dylan, so I’m drawn to it… buuut it’s definitely not my favourite Dylan - this type of blues does not really fit him
It's bluesy and dull. A nice enough sound, and I did like Standing in the Doorway, but over an hour of the same sound is too much. I thought Highlands would never end. I'm glad it did.
I'm so bored The production is nice but the songwriting is so dull. Every song is really long but it's the same melody repeated throughout the full song If this wasn't Bob Dylan no one would care let's be real Also his voice sucks BOOOO
It wasn't awful and some songs showed genuine promise but I've no desire to hear any of it again
I will start with Make Me Feel Your Love was my wedding song. I loved that song (not by Dylan) but my husband loved Dylan so it worked out. Now that is where my love for this album ends. Dirt Road Blues, Trying to Get to Heaven and Not Dark Yet weren't bad. But for those (and all of the songs) I kept checking the length because they felt like they just kept going and going. They also felt so long because the rhythm and melody didn't change it was just the same cords over and over each song making them seem longer. I don't mind Dylan, not my favorite but I appreciate the depth in some of the lyrics and the folk style. This album confused me with the half blue half folk styling. Beyond that it was just song after song about how someone broke his heart and he never recovered. Nothing was deep into why this happened or what caused it, just she walked out the door, I was happy before I met her but now I am miserable. It really got grating and whiny coming from an old man who showed no accountability or depth into why the relationship ended. This is an album I feel like Dylan could have done without. Did people really like this album or were they just to afraid to say Dylan did something bad?
The instrumentation on here is mostly immaculate, creating a bluesy, even modern vintage vibe throughout. That’s a 5/5. I’ve said it before though…Bob Dylan’s voice is not for me. His vocal style is so incredibly, mind crushingly, soul suckingly boring. There is only one dynamic to it and that ends up sounding like a tired grandpa struggling to shit on the pot. “Highlands” goes on for 16 1/2 pointless, repetitive minutes of sonic drudgery. I kept needing to remind myself why this project is fun during that runtime. When others cover his songs, the results are much more intriguing.
jeg synes den når at blive kedelig! Urelateret men jeg så trailer til Dylan filmen i går og den ser så ringe ud D:
#435. What are we doing guys? Are we really listening to 90s Dylan? You know we don't have to, right? Now the Spotify algorithm is going to think I want to hear this, and it's all your fault. 2/5: why?
In my mind I have no time for Bob Dylan
I don't care for bob Dylan and I've even seen him live. This album did not deviate. It was not good and I'm a little confused about how Dylan was and remains so highly regarded? It feels like the inversion of the fact that the world's greatest rapper probably stocks shelves at target.
Still cant find the fascination with bob dyaln. Very overrated. A few good songs here and there bit nothing great. Hate his voice
More recent Bobby D. I don't enjoy it as much as his younger years but I also don't hate it
It was interesting, but ultimately, not for me. I thought the songwriting was okay and his voice at times was cool, but it still had me bored throughout the album. 2/5
I know Bob Dylan is a prolific singer and songwriter, but I guess I missed the boat. Never been too impressed with his style of music and this is no different. 2/5
I’m a normal Bob Dylan fan but not familiar with post 80s. My first reaction is that for 1997 he’s putting in good effort and his band is solid (some particularly cool drum parts). Most songs are a verse or minute too long. "Love Sick" is a good opener..."Dirt Road Blues" loses the momentum with a really mediocre blues song. “Lost in the light” by Bahamas owes a lot to “Standing in the Doorway”. "Make You Feel My Love" comes out of nowhere and is clearly the standout. It's bizarre that he came up with that in 1997 and even more bizarre that it comes out of nowhere on the album. This excercise made me appreciate how incredibly boring it would be to be a session musician for Dylan..."OK BOB, I'll hold the chords again for 7 minutes while you mutter on".
This album almost no impression on me. What a snooze fest. You can’t just trot out Bob Dylan’s 30th album and act like it’s some sort of treasure. Boooooring. 2 stars
Too much Bob Dylan on this list IMO. Like, this is his 30th studio album?!?! Give it a rest bro. Boring.
Its bob dlyan. Again.
Personally, folk isn't for me. It sounds like music for old people. The album was ok, but it was very long and all the songs sounded similar. I think the album deserves a much higher rating, but it really wasn't my taste.
It's fine and not much more than that
Paskin Dylan albumi 1001???
My husband and son love Bob Dylan. I do not. His voice has never appealed to me, and I've found it too much of a barrier to appreciate his much-revered lyrics or the songs themselves. Consequently, I've never listened to a whole album before. Apparently we get seven in the 1001 - this was the first to come up for our group. Husband thinks there are more than seven Dylan albums better than this one. I guess it's included as it marked a "return" and won lots of Grammys. (And it's got the song that Adele covered, of course.) Anyway. I didn't hate it. It was, at times, bluesy and quite atmospheric. It's not really for me, though, and I was already finding a lot of it boring before I got to the 16 and a half minutes of the final track. Phew.
Maybe a hot take, but this album is so boring and just doesn’t sound good. It’s not interesting and that’s incredibly disappointing.
Bob Dylan changed the world, but so did cholera
Dylan far from his best
I "liked" two songs on this album - Love Sick and Can't Wait. The rest of the album is overly long blues songs and it's just boring. Dylan's voice is peak annoying here and the music is forgettable at best.
Bob Dylan is in my top 5 most listened to artists of the year purely because of this project. I would imagine the amount of Bob Dylan albums here is meant to make me have more of an appreciation for his work. But with each subsequent Bob D album, I'm learning that I just don't like Bob D albums. Tedious, long winded 90s blues rock with bad vocals that makes me feels like I'm missing something. 5/10
I tried. I really tried. But Dylan still sounds like a human trying to sing like a badly played harmonica. I can appreciate the quality of the songs but give me cover versions please.
My predisposition to Dylan aside, this album is just kinda boring.
2.5 Sorry Bob, loved the last one I got from you but this was a a snooze. Nothing I hate more when good musicians age and get really into traditional Americana. What a bore!
Wasn’t a fan of Bob Dylan’s early works, still not a fan of his later works either. Raspy old man voice sing talks to some bluesy backings. 3/10
Oh my God my chainsaw can finally sing
A tough record to judge that really falls short in a major way in my opinion. On one hand, the lyrics are powerful and interesting, and the melodies themselves are heartfelt and very engaging. But Dylan's vocals performance is downright unlistenable at times. It may be one of the worst performances I've ever heard. It's a damn shame too, because the songs are really excellent; until he starts singing again. I don't know if it would have been possible to edit his voice in production, or even get someone else to sing his lyrics. Because man he's rough to listen to. Top tracks: Standing in the Doorway, Not Dark Yet, Make You Feel My Love
Han är en vass låtskrivare men det är sällan hans album håller. Enligt mig i alla fall.
I’ve never got on with Dylan Make You feel my love is a great song. For Adele Rest was nothing
2.5 It never really occurred to me until listening to this album that I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything from Dylan released past like 1975 - and it doesn’t really feel like I was missing much. It seems that he made a transition from folk to blues with this album, and I don’t hate it, but the production is awful. I think its rough exterior was done intentionally to give more of a raw, live feeling to the album, and perhaps as a nod to some of his musical heroes from long ago, but compared to a lot of actual live albums (or even some of Dylan’s earlier work), I was just not feeling a strong emotional connection to this. As someone who has always had kind of a soft spot for Dylan’s nasally voice, it feels significantly degraded here, borderline Tom Waits-y. Maybe that’s supposed to encapsulate the spirit of the album given that it deals a lot with aging and death topically, but I don’t think that it automatically translates to listenability. On that note, people treat this album like it’s Dylan’s swan song, but the dude has released ten albums since. In fact, he’s actually playing the Hollywood Bowl tonight. I will give credit to Make You Feel My Love as a bright spot - in my opinion, it’s by far the best song here, and the only one that reminded me of the charm I feel with a lot of Dylan’s older stuff. Though, conversely, Highlands was a slog - Desolation Row the song is not. Not bad, but mostly unmemorable - I don’t see this being anyone’s favorite Bob Dylan album. I had a bit of a laugh seeing that this won Album of the Year at the Grammys in 1998 - because of course it did. For as much shit as I talk about Radiohead, I think I would have opted for OK Computer over this myself.
Very honky-tonk and same-y sounding to me on first listen. I'm sure it's great for those who are big into this genre of music but just not for me.
This man cannot sing and it will never not drive me crazy.
Bob Dylan is one of those artists that I never really enjoyed. He wrote some good songs and I feel like every time I hear his original performance of them, it’s worse than the version I heard before. His voice, while distinctive, is not for me. I was hoping I could be turned around by this, but not this time. Maybe when we inevitably go through his older stuff it’ll be better.
I think his voice got better from his earlier music and I don't like that. Slow paced and boring.
i don’t care for dylan’s voice on this. a few good songs, but i don’t see myself returning to this project anytime soon
Im getting tired of this guy ngl
Is there really anything lyrically valuable here?
I'd never heard this one but it didn't work for me. Overproduced, uneven tonally, and the production drowned out his vocals, which sound OK all things considered but are covered up by everything else going on. Sorry Bob!!
Not Dylan at his best. Some good songs but mostly songs that were largely unenjoyable. Make You Feel My Love made particularly poor listening. 5 minutes+ for Lovesick was not necessary.
Not much of a Bob Dylan fan. I'm guessing this is why.
This is the seventh Bob Dylan album. As I have said before he can write songs and he can play music but the man cannot sing. It is awful. The album was a little long and listening to his voice made it that much more difficult. If someone who could actually sing sang this album it would have received a higher rating. I am being generous.
Nicht meine Richtung
Still totally unconvinced
All the respect for his song writing… but his albums just don’t quite hit the mark.
Not bobs best
nothing to write home about
Så Bob... Hvad kan du den her gang? - Gaaaaarh! Du kan trække ting i langdrag, og lyde af ørken på en dårlig dag... Det sidste 16 minutters forsøget at gøre mig sur.. Det lykkedes!
Not my kind of listening enjoyment, but an ok album
Hour long anti smoking PSA
nothing really stood out on this one.
The only Bob Dylan albums that I've listened to are Blonde on Blonde, and Highway 61 Revisited, which I both enjoy, so this was my first time listening to something from later in Bob Dylan's catalog. Overall, this album was pretty underwhelming. It was interesting at times to hear a more a straightforward blues sound from Dylan, but the overall result was pretty boring. There were some flashes of brilliance with some of the piano and organ arrangements, but the songs and the overall album were just too long for my liking. "Tryin' to Get to Heaven" was nice, but it was the only song that I kind of enjoyed. This album wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't my speed.
Dylan? Nope
This further reinforces that I'd like Bob's songs more if he had someone else sing them. I'm a lyrics guy and I find it hard to pay attention to them with his voice singing them. The music's good, the singing bad.
Wieder Folk und wieder nicht meins. Dabei hat Bob so gute Musik gemacht ...
Robert Allen Zimmerman taps into the time-space continuum with this record, bending the rules of temporality in his own image and trapping unsuspecting victims on the journey known as "1001 Albums Generator" in an infinite time vortex. While this album might seem to be 73 minutes long to any passerby, the listener will spend 3 billion years in the Bobverse. In other words, this is way too long. Oh Bob, you silly goose. Please let me see my daughter again.
Last bob album sucked ass, because it wasn't my vibe at alll. First song and already the same vibe. His voice has changed a little, I guess I like it more. It's quite chill now, unless it's progressive. It was definitely not that. As expected I didn't like it. Ouu second song has a beat now, never had before. Wow it goes like it started, even country is more fun than this. I would like to know why people like this, actually i know why this can be good to listen to, it just makes me feel like I'm wasting time. Third song, didn't even notice it had changed, I'm not searching meaning of these songs as I'm not at all interested. It's 7 minutes? I'm dead already. 4th song and these songs are not listenable they are to be backgrounded. 5th song just realised I hate this voice. The vibe he creates is fully uninteresting also. 6th song and exactly same situation. He has a more rock sound, but doesn't mean it's better. 7th song, thing is songs aren't even sad, they don't make me sad or depressed, or happy or anything, I'm just like "next", idk might just be me, but I value instrumentals in a song, which bob lacks too much. 8th song has a slight appearance of the instruments, like guitar and a bass? Well at least this one sounds the best. OMG 9th song I knew by tittle was Adele's, but it was a sample she used of Bob apparently. Well I've said this in a before album listening, this guy can write but not sing, adele has a way of delivering the vocals that are not scratchy but actually pleasing, though some people prefer this, which is no problem. Basically this was the best song because I knew it, just from different voice. Now that I think if Bob's songs were redoed by smn with a nice voice, it would actually sound good. Because I mean Adele has the exactly same vibe, but she has some type of spark too. For example 9th song, it's not bad, and wow I like it because I imagine it was sang by smn else. Like my perspective changed, I get the Bob Dylan vibe now. I think. Like as I said Adele has same vibe with the instruments, less rock more soul, but still. I now know why I should like this. I didn't except myself to change so quickly I was gonna give this 1 star but maybe 2 or 3 now?! Ohh also Adele has choruses which makes her songs better in a popular sense(I'm not a huge fan of her, she just used Bob's song so just comparing) Last song and my somehow changed mind likes it. I said this about last Bob's album, this has such a karaoke vibe, it just needs a beat drop and a little baroque pop, would be perfect. Oh what the fuck this is 16 minutes, I don't like it that much. Well whole song was the monotonous same vibe, didn't like it, but it has something. Soo as I've said because Adele used his sample, I'm rating this 2 instead of 1. Well Adele also made me realise why I should like Bob, so yeah, he's not as bad as he used to be, there's more Bob albums here so awaitingg.
2- Stars (4/15)
Nothing terrible, but not my favorite batch of Dylan songs. A few solid tracks however. Still nice.
lol long and bad. if i still listened to full albums on this list, I would be PISSED and my kidney stone would act up again.
it’s ok but it’s only really on this list because it’s dylan
Some of these songs just sounded like basic blues to me. I was impressed that the songs are longer than they felt. A 7 minute song that doesn't over stay its welcome is a rarity. I just don't enjoy Bob's singing. The music itself is good. This album almost would have been better as an instrumental. Haha.
Jesus save me but I'll never be a bob dylan fan.
same as always. the writing is powerful but… could i write poetry to this? n
I like a lot of Dylan. Just nothing on this album really.
Decent effort, I like the Langois atmosphere of the production. 2/5
snore
1.5/5
It was ok, a bit boring. I like 60/70s Dylan, not sure about 90s Dylan though
Couldn’t do it. 1997 I was deep into discovering the first ten albums when this came out and I forced myself to listen to it dozens and dozens of times, and there are moments but there’s no sustained magic like the magic of the early days and I felt guilt for not loving the man’s entire oeuvre and so I kept listening and searching and hoping but knowing it wouldn’t come and then at some point just stopped and I thought oh this’ll be fun to go and see what these songs sound like now but it’s not fun, it’s still just, like, empty and sad and me feeling like a jerk for feeling empty and sad and the last thing I need in my life is more reason to feel bad about the ways I just actually feel so sorry Bobby but it’s all pre-1977 for me from now on.
just not my type
This is just tooooo long and also not very memorable
I just wanted it to end. Boring and repetitive. Everything sounds the same. Maybe one good song.
I would really like to get Highway 61 Revisited soon, I feel bad about giving all these 2 star reviews to Bob Dylan because I don’t dislike his music for the most part.
Nope. That's all.
Never been a huge fan of this album
Difficult for me to enjoy for a few reasons... This style of music just doesn't captivate my interest very much. Not memorable.
Not as good as the classic Bob Dylan albums, more mature and raspy voice, the melodies are a bit heavy and don’t feel as free flowing as his earlier music.
Headphones, train, first listen, single sitting, FT: Standing in the Doorway
love the bluesy quality. his vocals ruin it for me every time.
This Bob's "Jakob Dylan's dad" era and it is the Bob Dylan sound that I was most familiar with before I started the 1001 Albums project. Can't say I enjoyed much on this one. "Standing In the Doorway" was a good sad song but the rest of the album is sad songs that aren't so good. Also the production is very... noticeable? and seemed out of place for Dylan's style. Gotta give it two stars. That is the rating I give albums that have me calculating how much time I have to listen before I can put another album on.
Coulnd't really get into this album
Like all 60's rock stars, the magic is gone by the time they're 40. Dylan is no exception and he's said as much in many interviews
Boy, I sure don’t like listening to Bob Dylan. I think I would honestly be happier reading his songs out, the songs are slow and pretty samey in a way that I find quite boring. I also don’t love his vocals, which I would assume are a love it or hate it type thing.
Mixed feelings on this. 60's and 70's Dylan were huge for me but this sounds tired. A few good tunes but inexplicably the album starts with two really uninteresting songs.
Voy a escucharlo, pero de entrada esto no tiene buena pinta. Y oído y olvidado. Lo siento Bob, pero me ha parecido un peñazo.
Just don’t really like Bob Dylan… too whiney
2,5
This is ok I guess. I know Bob Dylon is a very famous artist, but this really doesn't jump at me in a particular way. I was going to give this at the very least a 3/5, but I am painfully bored of it and I've only gone through half the album. There is also a fucking 16 minute song so this is an auto 2/5
- slow, a little boring, but I honestly don't hate the vibe - some songs I liked: Standing in the Doorway, Til I Fell In Love With You - 2.5 round down cuz I don't know how often I'd go back to it
- At risk of sounding like a millennial, Bob Dylan makes Boomer music - More of the same, good storyteller - Oh lord a 16 minute closing song about nothing
Best Song: Tryin' to Get to Heaven. I just like the lyrical conceit of someone racing to heaven before it closes. Worst Song: Make You Feel My Love. The contrast between the beauty of the lyrics and the nasal voice is just too much. This is a great song, sung by anyone else. Overall: Not Bob's best offering. I found myself wishing for his more youthful energy, or just the darker tones of a Tom Waits. This languishes too much in the middle.
I don't know if this is held up as a shining achievement for its songwriting or the fact that it's one of the most prolific artists of all time's 30th record. 30?! Say what you will about Bob, but the man doesn't slow down. But either way, I can't say I agree with that assessment. I found myself dozing off a few times throughout this. I'm not trying to take anything away from the man, but your place in the echelon of music has been earned bud; you can rest easy.
I wish I had heard these sorts of interesting production techniques on a more engaging album
Ich verstehe Bob Dylan nicht. 3-4/10
Нет времени слушать музыку которая была записана не для меня. Вок зыс вэй конечно хорошая
Mellow folk. Still not a huge fan of his voice
This isn't as bad as Dylan usually is.
Ehhhh didn’t like this album very much, songs were pleasant but felt like they didn’t leave much of an impression, and his voice on this one is particularly cartoon smoker
very bland. it's like he's gone down the tom waits road but isn't as cool a cat so has ended up with some MOR.
I’m sure context makes it a 4 or even a 5. His voice is so grating, he sounds so old
Still not a fan but an improvement on 60's Dylan
Not going to lie, the album is really boring at times, then again, great album for listening in a bar somewhere while enjoying a glass of whiskey
Dylan might be the most overrated musician of all time fwiw. This album is fine but utterly unremarkable and not at all memorable.
Ask yourself this, if you were to introduce someone to Bob Dylan, would this be the first album you'd go with? The second? The THIRD? No? Me neither. It's not bad, but kinda generic blues, and most importantly it's not a good representation of it's time period, of it's genre or it's creator. I gives it two dusty old jukebox spins out of five
Not my favourite genre, but OK. 2/5
OK- not great
Eerder kregen we Blood On The Tracks van Bob.
I can’t say that I’m very excited about today’s album. I’ve heard one Bob Dylan’s album before, and I found his voice to be really annoying. Still, let’s listen and give it a fair chance! Songs I already knew: Make You Feel My Love (although I had no idea it was written by Bob Dylan) Favourites: Not Dark Yet I’m finding that Bob Dylan tends to write songs that other people go on to perform much better. Jimi Hendrix made All Along The Watchtower Better and The Byrds made Mr Tambourine Man better. For this album, we have Make You Feel My Love which is a good song, but Dylan’s vocals sound horrible to my ears. But no worry, Adele covered it and did it better. I often say that I found vocals to be the least important part of a good song, but these vocals go when beyond what I found tolerable. Far too nasal, far too squeaky, often not quite in tune. I just don’t see the appeal, but acknowledge that I’m likely in the minority.
I felt like this is the product of everyone telling Dylan he's a legendary songwriter and him getting overconfident that everyone will love whatever he puts out. Like Bowies Black Star but not as bad.
Oh boy, a 72 minute Bob Dylan album from 1997. Wasn't initially thrilled to listened to this one, mostly because of the length. I saw some people mentioning that his voice was more gravelly, but wow, I was not expecting it to sound quite like it does. If I didn't already know it was Bob Dylan, I don't know that I'd be able to guess that it's him. I kind of prefer his younger voice, oddly enough. Ending with a 17 minute song is a kicker... It perfectly shows my problem with some of the singer-songwriter genre: you write so many words and not enough music, resulting in a long, repetitive song. It was driving me insane. Probably would have given it a 3 if the album was shorter. My favourite song was Cold Irons Bound.
Eh
How does anyone take his voice seriously? A couple of the songs are bearable, but Make You Feel My Love sounds like he's playing a terrible joke on me.
Eh. Dylan's a hell of a songwriter, I just don't find the appeal of his as a performer. Couple decent blues tracks, but nothing special IMO.
Same as usual, Bob can write songs but ruins them with his singing. And this album I don't even rate the songs....
Love Bob but never warmed to this album. Don’t know why
Really slow album, not Bob Dylan’s best album imo
OK album---enjoyed the Not Dark Yet track.
A more recent album by Bob Dylan, which can be easily noticed thanks to coarser and in fact older voice of Bob. The style of songs is still the same, prominent Dylan's vocal, if you like it or not, some soft electric guitars, drums, piano and occasional harmonica.the problem is that this time there is no hits or "hymns of the generation". Instead we have just an average album by a great singer/songwriter. Pretty disappointing.
Kinda boring, I probably just don't like blues
Not bad but too long, became boring after a while. And there’s something about his voice that I like but dislike at the same time
Oh god why Not my fave style of music nor style of singing...
Pretty much like the other Dylan albums with less pizazz
meh.
Pretty boring ambience. No highlights on this one, just pretty meh.
Eh.
Dylan is good but sometimes hard to listen to
Beetje langzaam en saai. Lijkt veel op elkaar. Stem is ook vrij rauw en klinkt zelfs schreeuwerig. Niet mijn ding.
Better than I thought it would be. Liked tracks 5 and 6
I still don’t get it ! It was alright but I’m not a fan so a hard 2* but it could have been a low 3
I’ve never really explored Dylan’s music. Honestly I wouldn’t say I love this album yet. Poetic sure, but the vocals are so harsh. Hoping it grows on me. Some songs feel like they go on way too long.
Zu Cowboy mäßig
Wouldn’t believe this was Dylan if you told me. Not my style.
Old Dylan? I actually like the gravelly voice. But the melodies are least interesting Dylan yet. There are probably deeper meanings to the lyrics. But the melodies are straight boring and too far into jam territory.
No matter how many Dylan albums you throw at me, I don't think I'll ever like one. On this album, only with Not Dark Yet and Can't Wait I could get past Dylan's annoying vocals and appreciate the sound of the band.
Not my type of thing and just got really bored by the end. Who knew the original ‘To Make You Feel My Love’ was so bad.
While refreshing to hear Bob with a bit more instrumentation and production around him, it's quite frustrating when he does absolutely /nothing/ with it. This isn't a 1-star LP (that's reserved more for albums I feel antipathy towards), but it's close due to committing the cardinal sin of any media: being boring. None of the instrumentals on this thing go anywhere or make any statements, which leaves Dylan's cig-decimated vox to pick up the slack (spoiler: they don't). There's no narrative or melodic excitement to be found here, and closing things out with 16 minutes of monotony is the ultimate frustrating footnote.
I couldn't enjoy this album. Some of the songs start out nice enough, but as soon as Dylan starts singing, it ruins the music for me. His voice doesn't mix well with the music. At all. Even having Daniel Lanois as a producer (clearly recognizable) doesn't help. And much of the material is based on the blues, which is off-putting as well. 2/5
Very bluesy. A few songs sound like Tom Waits. Not a lot stood out when it was playing as work background music.
I haven't heard Dylan's 80s albums, but the fact that this was considered a comeback from those suggests to me how bad they were. Well enough produced, I suppose, but the songs are allowed to crap on unnecessarily (only two out of 11 songs run under five minutes), old Dylan has always sounded to me like a shitty parody of young Dylan, and the whole thing is 73 minutes of merciless self-indulgence. I finally abandoned it halfway through "Highlands".
I'm sure it's technically brilliant, but I just didn't enjoy it
late dylan is not great dylan
Not really a huge Dylan fan, so I wasn't sure what to make of this. I liked a few moments of this album, it just didn't do much for me overall. I prefer his early work over this.
I get that Bob Dylan is a renowned lyricist (and for good reason) but his vocals are atrocious. There’s some cool bluesy vibes to this but otherwise I will never listen to this again. Or any Dylan for that matter.
This was fine. I can get into his earlier stuff more though. Saw Dylan live twice, and they are both on the short list of worst performances I've ever witnessed. But I guess that is what you get when you see someone 50 out of their prime.
Just fucking boring.
Not my favorite Dylan album Favorite Track: Not Dark Yet Relisten: No
I wish Bob Dylan would stop showing up on this list.
Decent album, not his best
okayish
Bob was sad about a woman. Raspy.
I just don't like Bob Dylan.
All very samey
Boring Bob
72 minutes of newer Dylan... Not my thing.
This was a miserable, terrible slog for the first 40 MINUTES. The last few tracks got slightly better. Not Dark Yet single handedly saves this from being a 1 star. Dylan's voice has always been an acquired taste, but in this album it's all blown out to trash. He sounds like absolute shit. If he were a new artist, this album would have NEVER been recorded.
Why does he insist on having hour plus albums
I didn’t realize Bob Dylan turned into an old lady who smoked 5 packs a day.
Bob Dylan's 30th album released in 1997, and was a return to his classic and great musical sound. Fans loved this album, considering it a comeback, and even some feel it's his best album ever. It went on to earn a platinum rating, and in 1998 at the Grammy Awards, the album won Album of the Year & Best Contemporary Folk Album. This album had a new atmospheric sound for Bob Dylan's country and blues music, which is either liked or hated by fans. I have never been a fan of Bob Dylan's music, but this was fine to listen to while I worked.
I assume I have Daniel Lanois to thank for getting Dylan to ditch his wretched harmonica and annoying AF singing style on this album. Merci beaucoup Danny Boy! Frank Zappa also nails it in his brilliant Dylan parody in “Flakes”, if you’ve heard it you’ll know what I mean. Although this is more listenable than his 29 other previous albums I’m still not a fan. I know this is Bob Fucking Dylan so I made the effort to listen to the entire album. But that’s my point, it shouldn’t be an effort to listen to.
I know this is Bob Dylan, but this didn't offer up much and sounded pretty worn out
Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Bobby, but I could tell in this one that he was getting older and less exciting. I did enjoy Not Dark Yet, but these songs were so long and repetitive. If I was Bob I would have retired a long time ago and just enjoyed my ride off into the sunset. Even the album cover feels like it doesn't belong but is also completely accurate with this album. A blurry shot of the man we once knew who is out of his mind with the times of these songs.
Bod Dylan has a slow blues jam. I like Dylan,I think he's got a lot of good songs. I also think that the reason he's had so may hours as he's had the chance to take so many swings. It's not amazing but is decent easy blues background music. His voice feels tired on this one. Standout track - Highlands
This album never really worked for me. 2.5 stars
Flubbed, timid, a monotony of vocals. Not doing it for me
Love Sick into Dirt Road Blues is an excellent contrast in tones. I still don't like Bob's diction. And after a while its just the blues. Tryng To Get To Heaven is a perfect example of Bob Dylan ruining a perfectly good song with his voice. Jesus I can't stand this guy's voice. Cold Irons Bound is a good tune, which I think is the only real reason I don't give this a 1 star. Highlands is bullshit.
Ik ben echt geen Dylan fan. Dat maakt dit album niet anders.
Maybe this album is overrated, maybe it needs another listen.
I was never a fan of Dylan. I don't see the appeal. He may be a good song writer but not an enjoyable performer. The only Dylan songs I like are covers.
Well, these really do all sound the same! And I still think of this as a "new" Bob Dylan album... Just because an old artist does something that's OK, that does not make a return to form... Quite a lot of dirge.
