Reviews (page 6 of 8)
I actually really enjoyed this. Not sure if it merrits a 4 but definitely a 3. I liked the blue overtone it had throughout the album. I didn't realize Bob Dylan had continued making music past the 80s let alone into the 90s.
Rauhallista ja nättiä menoa. Sopi tällä kertaa hyvin kuunteluhetkeen, mutta en ehkä lähtisi juoksulenkille tämä korviin soidessa.
Varmaa Bobii
Some great songs here, but kinda over long, began to lose interest by the end. Still pretty good though, 3.5 rounded down.
Bobbie föll av
Idk dehä hade int Bob Dylan såsen som ja börjat förvänta mig bortsett highlands som va sick. Idk maybe lyssna igen? Cool production o nog helt trevligt
An album I ought to enjoy more, but just can't fully grasp my head around. I'm fond of the rough lyrics, the world weary accompaniment, but Dylan's vocals are very much a hit or miss. A certain cadence that doesn't always rest easy on my ears. And yet, despite my gripes, I find it hard to imagine any other voice warbling these tunes.
Eh. It's Dylan, you know what you're getting. His voice ain't great, some of the songs are. This album is rather bluesy. Highlands is 16 minutes of boring storytelling and the same guitar over and over
Bob Dylan has never been a favorite of mine, but I much prefer his singing on this album than on earlier ones. Not bad.
This is my first Dylan record. I enjoyed this quite a bit a a few of the tracks like ‘standing in the doorway’ are absolute 5 star songs. Unfortunately not all the blues tracks worked for me and the final track ‘highlands’ is unforgivably long and boring.
Not really a fan of this album. Wanted to like it more than I did.
2.5
Some great songs on here as to be expected
This album marked a return to form for Dylan after a few lackluster releases in the previous decade, where he returns to showing his quality songwriting and performing skills. One of the most striking features of "Time Out of Mind" is its raw and gritty sound, which is a departure from the more polished production values of Dylan's earlier work. The album was recorded with a small group of musicians playing live in the studio, and the result is an intimate and atmospheric sound that perfectly complements Dylan's songwriting. Lyrically, the album is a meditation on mortality and the passage of time, with Dylan exploring themes of loss, regret, and redemption. One of the most notable things about "Time Out of Mind" is how Dylan blends different genres and influences. The album draws on blues, rock, country, and folk traditions, but it never feels like a pastiche or a tribute. Instead, Dylan tries makes each song his own, infusing it with his unique voice and vision. Sometimes this becomes tiresome on the album, but it’s still undeniably Bob Dylan’s sound. "Time Out of Mind" is a testament to Dylan's enduring talent and creativity. I think it's an album that rewards repeated listening, revealing new layers of meaning with each play. It’s close to a 4 but doesn’t quite reach it.
I liked the album except for his voice
Sehr stabiles Album, Ich mag es wie abwechslungsreich es ist. Es gibt auch Songs von ihm die ich sehr mag aber die sind nicht in dem Album.
weird choice for dylan, how many dylan’s are on this list
A bit slow, but not bad
Decent but a little too slow for my taste. I think Bob’s voice loses some of its charm and uniqueness with all the processing put on it. A few really quality standouts but not enough for me. 6/10
It's fine?
Actually not bad 3/5
bobobobobob! i thought i'd hated it, but it was sweet and comfy.
This is my first introduction to Bob Dylan for a full album, and I have a feeling this isn't the best example of the heights this man can reach. This wasn't bad at all, but a lot of times it felt like a call back album, not something from the late 90s. It wasn't particularly innovative or interesting, and was really only saved by a few of the songs working with his voice, which I can see why its considered grating here. A completely middle of the road album at the end of the day.
Melancholic and positively Bob Dylan
unfortunately doesn't hold a candle to his all timers like blonde on blonde or highway 61 revisited, but time out of mind still has your normal high-quality and well-produced assortment of dylan songwriting, scratchy voiced vocals, and bluesy backing arrangements.
What a silly, silly voice
Little bit too long and I don’t know how anyone could like Dylan’s voice, but like the song writing and atmosphere. Little bit too uniform but I think that is partly because of length Standing in the Doorway was my favorite
This may be the most listener friendly of Dylan's entries where his songs shine.
ok ok. Can't listen to the whole album...
It's okay. It's better than most 42nd albums are. But it is the sound of an old man who is bored of it all and just knocking out bluesy rock. The fact it's Dylan, even firing on one cylinder makes it better than it has any right to be. But it's not good. The fact this is in here, possibly at the expense of one of his earlier albums is a waste.
There are 1001 albums on this list. All of them are noteworthy. Some of them I won’t be able to say anything about. They’re not bad. They’re just them. This is one of them.
I'm in two minds about Bob Dylan - I definitely don't see him in the same overwhelmingly positive light as some people, but I do enjoy his stuff? Is he a better singer than... even 50% of most professional singers? No (although I like his voice more later in his career, like this album). Is he a noticeably better lyricist than people like Paul Simon / Tom Waits? No. I'm not sure he deserves a Nobel Prize over them and potentially some others, but it's a really nice, gravelly bluesy listen. Mixes up the pace a little, but overall pretty slow and ballad-like. 3/5, but a comfortable 3.
Started with big fear after 2 poor Dylan albums in this 1001 list. But this one was nice and bluesy, and his voice still good. 3 stars this time, still hoping for Desire on the list.
Felt like a very average blues album. Not sure it would be considered special except for the fact that it is Bob Dylan. No bad songs, but also no songs that I would consider interesting in any way.
A nice collection of songs, really nice vibe to the whole album. I sort of feel like on a first listen there weren't really many songs that I felt gripped by. Really, I'd give it a 3.5 if I could.
Fav song: Dirt Road Blues
Best leuke Americana-blues-mummelmuziek.
Just ok. I enjoyed when the playlist rolled into Van Morrison more though.
It was good, for sure! Not exactly my cup of tea- felt repetitive, as can be the nature of blues without good solos. Dylan still has some of his lyrical mastery from his earlier days, but he seems to have shed some of his penchant for elegant storytelling and poignant poetry along the way, to me.
Less mumble, more gravel. Less folk, more blues. Overall a better lusten8ng experience than I usually have with Ol' Bob here.
2-3/5
Ok blues sound
Soft geriatric rock with pleasantly gravelly vocals and some nice blues/country instrumentation. You get the impression Dob Bylan is churning this out on an evening off, but maybe that's just an endorsement or his talent and/or a careful effect of the laid-back vibe. I think Dylan is the most overrated lyricist of all time, and sometimes I find it hard to overcome this. But I've managed to set that aside and enjoy this record for its merits. The 16 minute closing track is an uncompromising touch. 3.5*
An easy album that leans into the Blues for a later Dylan effort. The steady strumming and throbbing beat help propel this album, but his lyrics aren't quite as insightful as his other works. The absence of excessive harmonica may make this record more approachable though.
I’ve only ever heard impressions of Bob Dylan tbh this was my first time listening to him properly. Every impression I’ve heard was pretty spot on! Overall I enjoyed the album. His vocals are sometimes hard to listen to but I get that that’s his vibe and he’s just story teller through and through. Though sometimes it just felt like madlibs lol I could always fill in the blanks of his lyrics before he actually got there. Musically was dope! Pretty good sonics and easy to listen to. Prolly won’t be revisiting
First-time Bob Dylan listener. It's a decent album, but not something I found myself encaptured or mesmerized by. I deserved a listen, but I don't know if I'll come back for a listen. I think other albums could be easily replaced with a different album you shouldn't miss in a lifetime. 3/5
Not as good as his other stuff
Admittedly, I never really "got" Bob Dylan. This album did a little bit to change that, but it's still music that I only moderately enjoy at best. Favorite track: Not Dark Yet
There’s some gems in here, like Trying to Get to Heaven, but all in all feels a bit empty.
While it was interesting to hear Dylan sing about his wife and fear of death, the record was a bit too repetitive in both themes and rhythm
Listened Before? N Ah yes, 1990s Bobby D. This record is fairly well produced, but his voice had started to fade more by this point. I much prefer his older stuff from the 60s and 70s, but overall not a bad record. He's still an amazing musical storyteller and it shines through on a few of these songs, not the least of which is Highlands. I'd have added that one to my playlist but it clocks in at 16:31, so I went with the shorter option. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Not Dark Yet
Not a bad album, but I doubt it would have featured here if the cover didn’t read “Bob Dylan”.
Some decent songs, but got a little bored at points. People will see this as sacrilege against Robert Dylan BUT I DON’T GIVE A FUCK 3 stars.
Can't make my mind up with this one. Some of the tracks were decent, but felt like it went through a lull after the first 2 songs. Think it will grow on me and become a lofty 4.
Too long and some songs just faded into the background but there were a few standouts. Just scraped a 3
One of my favorite albums of all time
Descent album, carried ou by Bob Dylan's voice and the atmosphere. Little coherence in the album continuity so it's hard to focus on one thing for me. Small 3.5/5
Not terrible, not good. Enjoyed the song "Not Dark Yet"
Just okay. A lot of songs sounded similar.
Never actually listened to a full Dylan album before. Not sure this was the one to start with, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Fairly dark, too, which I don't mind. I feel like my review for this album is more lacking than a seasoned Dylan fan because I'm sure this album is different in some way that I don't see without the context of the rest of his catalog. Standouts: Love Sick, Dirt Road Blues, Not Dark Yet, Cold Irons Bound
Didn’t listen
As a Dylan fan it is really hard to rate an album of him, because you subconsciously compare them. It is a great album, Not Dark Yet is one of my fav tracks, but this an oldy rusty Dylan album. I prefer his album from his youth, I think the top of the hill was Blood on the Tracks, and if that is 5, I can only give 3 on this one.
Nice little album
It was OK, I thought the different style of production worked well for Dylan at this stage - but not sure I'd return to listen again in a hurry
Chill album
en stark trea. det här gå att lyssna på igen!
My first front-to-back Dylan album. Liked it
Well I have to say this wasn't my fave Bob Dylan, apparently that's a common opinion of 90s Dylan. His voice is a bit grating here. I did really like Not Dark Yet. Enjoyed a lot of his lyrics, as usual but actually just the style I wasn't loving
A bit of a crawl at times - though it does point the way towards greater albums such as Love and Theft. There are definitely some cool tracks, like the brooding 'Love Sick' and the excellent 'Cold Irons Bound', but there are some bummers here too. Did 'Highlands' need to be sixteen and a half minutes long? It could've coped if the lyrics were more compelling. In fact, for a Dylan album there's a surprising number of lyric sheets that veer towards the prosaic, at least by his standards. An interesting listen, even if it can be a little taking.
Oh man that was a hard listen. Very interesting going rob this right after Ray Price. Blues is a genre I’ve never enjoyed, but Price scooted you along sweetly and steadily. This wa more of that Twang-twang-twang Now I’m gonna tell you some stuff Twang-twang-twang Now I’m gonna tell you more stuff pertaining to what was previously told Twang-twang-twang And that infamous Dylan voice - that is definitely an acquired taste. Bob Dylan I’ve never heard much before, I have definitely heard all about them all my life. One of those artists that everybody says the greatest ever but you never hear any music from them. But the second half of the album I liked a good bit. Very haunting and clever lyrics, the somber but steady melodies, I can see why he has his loyalists.
make you feel my love
Easy listening bluesy vibe, but nothing stands out as exciting.
meh
i mean its alright like. overrated as fuck in my opinion i mean igual hablabdo en serio yo SÉ q este tipo tiene q tener cosas mejores sólo me toca escucharlas! pero bueno igual obvio digo esto pq no es mi estilo encima muy largos los temas si vas a hacer un tema de 10 minutos mínimo q sea cantata de puentes amarillos. 6.5 / 10 im saur sorry
Never listened to Dylan before. Not sure if this is the best introduction. It's fine but a bit samey.
Just okay. Liked the slower vibe.
This one is a little tricky to figure out for me. I really enjoyed the blues sound of it and even Dylan's "croaking vocals" for the most part. The nature of blues, however, seems to be that there is a lot of repetition in the backing music and not much melody to the vocals. So a song can go on. And on. And the next one can sound a lot like the previous. By the end of an hour, when "Highlands" came on, it went on for so long that I had this feeling like I didn't remember what my life was like when that song wasn't playing and Dylan wasn't rambling on and on in my ears about hard boiled eggs and women authors.
It wasn’t awesome, but it wasn’t bad. Very bluesy and a bit drawn out. Would I intentionally pull up this album to listen again, probably not…but if someone else put it on, I wouldn’t mind.
The guy is not a great singer, and by this point his lyrics kind of sucked too. "trying to get to heaven" is kind of funny if you imagine heaven is a club with a strict doors close time, but most of the other songs are fairly dull. With an album this late in a legendary act's career, you have to wonder if it suffers in comparison to his earlier work, or would never have seen the light of day if anyone else recorded these songs. With this album, I think it's the latter
Enjoyable but I do prefer the earlier stuff.
Was good.
Vocally Dylan was not that great by this stage, so as an advertisement for an anti-smoking campaign it works surprisingly well. As an album to listen to for pleasure, less so. If you took the Bob Dylan name off, would you honestly give this album the time of day? That said, the musical arrangements are actually quite good with plenty of variety. And of course Dylan's intriguing lyrics have something important to say.
Yeah Dylan, love Dylan. However on this all the passion, the insight somehow was missing. It was if the urgency and the reality with which he spoke had just evaporated. Let's be honest we don't do Dylan for his lovely singing voice, so what happened Dylan, we still needed you then we still need you now.
Lyrics make it worth it, but there's not much else to commend it. Typical Dylan then
Nice stuff. Good work Bob.
I’am surprised that they have a Dylan record this late into his career… The album opens with love sick it’s alright nothing as good as his earlier career, also the mixing on Dylan’s voice sounds horrible as it has a sorta fake quality to it ( his voice is supposed to sound bad). Dirt road blues is living proof that his lyrical talents from the 60’s are rather non existent it’s still nice sounding though and would be considered good for other musicians. Standing in the doorway is what I wanted from a late career Dylan with dirtier production and a worse voice this could’ve fit amongst his 60’s classics this is honestly a great piece of music! Million miles is a bluesy track it’s okay but forgettable in the 30 something Bob Dylan album’s ( even if I only know 3 of them). Trying to get out of heaven is really grand and epic sounding even with the voice of sand and glue over it it’s one of the better songs so far 100%. Till I fell in love with you is okay I like the instrumentation much more than the lyrics as this is quite bland in my opinion. Not dark yet is one of those great lyrical songs it’s a great emotionally heavy piece of music! The way that cold irons bound is really cool love that bass line at 7 minutes it is a bit long but it’s still one of the best songs on the album. Make you feel my love is a great piano track ( probably the best on the album that is under 5 minutes). I can’t wait has really good instrumentation for Dylan’s voice very good song. The album ends with a very very long song highlands it okay I like the storytelling but it’s too long. The first half was kinda bad then it got really good then the last track kinda took 1 star off it so the album is a 3/5.
Neil Young / 5
Someone's grandfather wants this played at their funeral. It'd be good for sitting alone at a bar on a Tuesday sipping on whiskey. I wish there were some more melodic pieces, rather than pure soul at times, but some tracks stand out. What this album does well, it does spectacularly. This is usually Dylan's heart pouring out through his southern drawl singing. I wouldn't listen to this on my own again, but it could be nice for relaxing with friends.
Nothing special
Aburrido, aunque no tanto como otros de Dylan.
Felt sad and inspired
Grew on me as I listened - not traditionally a BD fan.
I liked this Dylan offering.... Easy vocals right music mix.
Non mi aspettavo questo mood passivo aggressivo su una melodia tranquilla, bella 'Sick Love'. Continua in modo più dimesso... Canzoni sopra i 7 minuti buuuuuh (una da 16...)
A bit of blues, a bit of roots rock, a bit of soul, and maybe even a bit of country. All of it is touched with the dust of a road worn band, and the fuzz of distortion and reverb. I really enjoy the overall sound of the album. It's a mostly subdue and introspective album that maintains the lyrical poignance that you would expect from Dylan. Standing way out from the crowd on this album is the track 'Make you Feel My Love'. It's a gem of a love song that I'm surprised I've never heard come across before (either original or covered). Whoa is me, and my musically sheltered life.
Lo mejor de Dylan está en la década de los 60. Nunca tuvo una gran voz pero para el año de este disco el desgaste es notorio. Tal vez el disco de Dylan con más producción que haya escuchado.
I'm not a Dylan fan. This album did not change my mind, but it didn't exactly bore me to tears either.
Is any song different than any other song? Honestly could have had one consecutive track 1 hour and 12 minutes long and it would have accomplished the same thing. I don't really listen to lyrics, so whatever insightful philosophy Bob is singing to us all is lost on me. The album isn't bad... just really repetitive.
I have a dog named Bob. Not after Dylan, but worth noting. Solid song writing on this one.
Definitely a return to fomr, but not quite the best of form. Still, a few good moments
First time listen although I have many Dylan albums I haven't heard this one before. Some interesting tunes on this late 90's outing, not least, of course "Make You Feel My Love" (which is far more creepy when sung by a man than it is when sung by Adelle for example) I like the arrangements which are stripped back and, I feel, reminiscent of earlier Dylan fare. I liked "Not Dark Yet" "Standing In a Doorway" "Cold Irons Bound" and of course "Make You Feel My Love". Good album but would be in the lower reaches of the 1001 for me I'm afraid.
Bob Dylan is something unique. His music is build differently and I enjoy it. Not really a song that stand out for me, but a good album as a whole.
I'm hit or miss with Bob, but this was a nice, bluesy listen.
I've never been a great fan of Dylan and this album did nothing to change my mind. That said it was a smooth, soulful album full of the things you would expect from Dylan. Nothing to write home about but worth a listen.
Middling for Dylan but Make me feel your love has been covered in infinitum
Grade A songwriter but I feel like this is one of those albums you have to listen to a couple of times before it really sinks in
“Long and whining road.”
interesting to hear Make you feel my love from the original songwriter. Good production.
Muy Dylan. Con su voz personal y sus acordes innegables. Country-folk para escuchar relajadamente
Heilt ok
Finally, my first full Bob Dylan record! And it was… mixed. The songs that I liked, I absolutely loved. Not Dark Yet may be a contender for my favorite Dylan song now, and Cold Irons Bound is a banger. Most of the back half of the album really did vibe with me. Which is why it’s such a shame I found the first half of the record so unengaging. I know lyrics tend to be the primary focus with this artist, and they were good, but lyrics alone don’t make or break a record for me no matter how good they are. Most of these songs just felt dull, unexciting, and honestly until the back half of the record I was very worried that Dylan was just going to completely flop for me. I think one of the biggest issues was the production: when I think Bob Dylan, I think raw and cutting, and the cloudy filters over his voice surrounding everything really break a big part that attracts me to his sound. Ultimately a big mixed bag, but enough good to make it okay. I hope his other albums stand up stronger overall.
Waffling album, sometimes an old man who is too tired and sometimes a rugged sound I don't quite expect. I'm more excited for earlier Dylan.
A very soulful and darker Dylan album than normal. A bit older here and his voice is starting to show. The songs are pretty easy going and the instrumentals are always great. Not too many songs that are memorable though and it feels pretty middling. 6.4/10
Bom, mas o Dylan tem melhores.
I like Dylan generally so this album was kind of an easy listen for me. I even like his aged gravelly voice. But I have to admit that most of the songs on this record don't really stand out to me. There is some good stuff and then a lot of stuff that just isn't very memorable - kind of a sameness to it. Still, enjoyable latter day Dylan record.
Out of ear, out of mind
I found this to be a really listenable Dylan album. The Lanois production is clearly divisive amongst critics, but I like it. I luiek the weird spaciousness. it is heavily processed (he never met a reverb he didn't like), and yet keeps an analog feel. I like the grit in Dylan's voice. Some critics find some of the lyrics/songwriting a bit simplistic, although most of their ire seems directed at To Make You Feel My Love, which is well on the way to becoming a modern standard. Heaven forbid that a Dylan song should be accessible that anyone might like it! There is a reason this is Dylan's highest selling album ever. And coming nearly 40 years into his career, good on him.
Pretty heavy and one paced. I don’t think this is classic Dylan.
I went to school with a special needs kid with the unfortunate surname of "Bott". From his teen years on, he had a croaky rasp of a voice, and would greet everyone with a "how's it going?" in that voice. A voice which is EXACTLY the same as good ol' Bobby D's voice on this album. So, try as I may (and have tried several times over the years), I just can't hear it for what it is.
As much as I love Bob Dylan, I feel like this era of Dylan (Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times) is pretty overrated as critics were desperate for something to latch onto with Dylan after a string of duds following Oh Mercy. These late-era albums aren't bad per se, but if they are the highlights, his career was definitely in decline at this point. Still, after dozen or so actually great albums Dylan has released, he's earned quite a bit of leeway.
A well constructed album just to slow for me
A good album, but nothing that really stood out to me. No recognized songs
Not his best album IMO. Started off okay, but after a while many tracks felt like they went on too long and had a bit too generic blues sound to me. Make you feel my love is quite sweet.
As with many albums on this list, this was fairly pleasant, but not outstanding. Is it bad to say that I prefer the Adele version of Make You Feel My Love?
Class as usual from Bob but not as keen on the later gravelly vocals
Was ok I guess, nothing that memorable from a first listem
Ok. Nice slow songs but he goes on a bit.
not his best, not the worst
I saw Bob Dylan at the Breslin Center in 2004. It was bad. His voice was like gargling gravel. Ok, it was never excellent. But whatever. The real problem is seeing Bob Dylan play his electric songs with a bunch of studio musicians. The pristine approach that pros take to performing music has a way of sucking the life out, IMO, when you see a legacy artist. Nobody will ever sound as good backing Dylan than "The Hawks" back in the late 60s. You had to be there. Most of us weren't, at this point. I'd never listening to "Time out of Mind." I understand after reading about it that it's considered one of his best. It's definitely the best of his records that I've heard outside his 60s peak. It sounds like a band playing together. Not studio robots. That's all I ask, Bob. Also, I like how they added chorus to his voice - or whatever that effect is. This record had me from its staccato opening on "Love Sick."
decent blues style dylan album
Not bad, didn’t enjoy it as much as Bringing it Back home album
Nice to hear aber kein must to hear
This was the first time I had heard the later albums of Bob Dylan. I liked it because I like that style of blues but I’m not sure bob dylan is the best fit for it. I could just be saying that because I’m biased toward more modern blues like the black keys. Definitely not as good as his older music. Fav song: dirt road blues
I think I need to admit I am not a Bob Dylan person. It was okay.
Some of the songs were good, but the whole thing just felt too melodically repetitive to me. Great lyrics, though.
Was ok, bit too much for a whole album. Did not finish the last three songs because I was done.
Need to be in the right mood
Liked everything but the voice....
Fine album, though not my preferred Dylan.
Opening song is awesome and has been covered by Jack White. Album starts to drag with long songs throughout
Liked this album. Certainly creates a mood. Don't think it's 9:30 Monday morning music. Enjoyed standing in the doorway. Some of the early songs are a bit dull. Fine balance between moody slow music and man talking over boring guitar like on Highlands.
Not convinced by this.
Grans temes com 'Love Sick', 'Standing in the Doorway', 'Tryin to Get to Heaven' o 'Make You Feel My Love', algun d'excepcional com 'Not Dark Yet', però també molt minutatge que baixa en molt la qualitat i rebaixa la nota mitja del disc
Отличный Старый Дилан
Good album
This is the album they made it on the list? I mean , surely other Dylan albums did too, but this is an interesting album. Not Dark Yet is really the only song I am familiar with. The rest of the album is a good example of "late stage Dylan." It's good, but I wouldn't call it a must hear.
3.6
Not his best work
Al estilo de Bob Dylan. Bueno, pero nada más
On the opening track he says "I'm sick of love; I wish I'd never met you." Dylan is known for his cryptic lyrics but on Love Sick - not so much. The good thing about being Bob Dylan is that many very good musicians want to play with you and they end up making some gems out of your songs. Dirt Road Blues is an example. Cold Irons Bound is another example showing excellent bass. Boy, we've had a lot of Dylan albums. Of the five, this one excited me the least.
It gets off to a good start. I like the Daniel Lanois production. The arrangements and ambience of the first song are different, with the reggae guitar and moody electric piano. After that, a number of songs fall into a standard blues progression, which to me would indicate Dylan’s short on ideas. Some others remind me of his earlier songs, which is not surprising since this is his 30th album! The lyrics are not the snappiest. “I didn’t know when I saw ya’ if I should kiss ya’ or kill ya’”. His voice is toast, but still not that far off his prime, lol. I would say there are (at least) 2 or 3 Dylan albums that didn’t make the 1001 list, that I would place ahead of this.
This one isn't that good
I'm sorry. I can't. I really tried. Never took to Bob Dylan. Had never heard of this album so gave it a few listens. Not a fan.
Solid album, but to me doesn't match Blood on the Tracks.
Thumbs up to Standing in the Doorway, Trying to get to Heaven, and Not Dark Yet. And the organ on Love Sick. 3.75.
Liked another BD album yuh yuh
Perfectly pleasant but bit plodding hour-an-a-quarter of blues-y Americana. Maybe you get more out of it if you listen to the lyrics? I am more of a song/melody/arrangement kind of person and I just don't think there's much happening here on that front. And the songs are so long. For me, maybe unexpectedly, the only thing that makes it stand out in any positive way is Dylan's voice. 6/10
First listen. I think this is my favorite Bob Dylan album. This one will only get better with time. Standouts: Make You Feel My Love 3/5.
I listened to this from a few rooms away and didn't feel the need to listen closer. I like Dylan but this was long and not his best. 6
smoky day drinking at the dive bar with lyrical pearls
Dylan makes a comeback with this original album that looks back to roots and ignores the advancing technology of the late 90s. His voice has clearly aged, and the songs' subject matter reflects on that... Although not as much as the media believed following Dylan's hospitalization. The tracks are long and slow, putting an emphasis on the introspective lyrics going at their own pace. But for the mediocre songs, I kept thinking 3 minutes in, "how much longer is there?" This is a difficult thing to adjust to if you're not used to it, or if you're not in love with all the tracks which I certainly am not. Examples of songs I couldn't stand much include "Trying to get to heaven" and "Can't wait". "Dirt Road Blues" is a decent song on its own but ruins the mood. Then there's the most popular track from this album, "Make you feel my love" which is the most 90s-sounding track from this album. It's no wonder it's been covered by so many artists because it sounds nothing like a Dylan song, which cheesy lyrics and dull melody. (Adele improved the sound so much... but you can't help the lyrics.) That being said, I enjoyed just closing my eyes and listening to many of the tracks. "Love Sick" was a great opener with excellent modern production value and engaging and emotional lyrics. Most of the first half tracks were pretty good. "Not Dark Yet" is the highlight of this album, with the best vocals and lyrics, with its sound second only to "Love Sick." The rockabilly "Cold Irons Bound" is another great job, but I mostly like it for the rough sound and vocals. Not sure how it fits with the rest of the album. The closing track "Highlands" was aesthetically pleasing to just sit back and relax to. Has a swamp sound that reminds me of CCR. Overall, I think it's a really decent 90s attempt by Dylan. Some problems that could be mostly resolved by skipping a few tracks. But otherwise really great tracks that work well for the aging Dylan.
definitely a return to form, but not as good as critics say. Lots of cliched tripe, but come sublime stuff. 3
Not as good as he once was.
Better than other Dylan - I’m just not a big fan of his.
Dylan is someone I should spend more time with. I think his lyrics are very good, but his music almost sounds like spoken poetry at times. Will revisit and re-listen (to this and other albums)
Started off really strong for me but fell of a little bit as it went, not bad at all though. This is the type of Bob Dylan I haven't heard though, so definitely worth listening.
Pleasant folk/rock.
more blues-y than his earlier albums. His voice has definitely improved. The songs are good and I can appreciate the writing, but none of these are catchy enough to make me want to listen again
It was good and a lot of the lyrics stood out
Underrated Dylan record. Bluesy and in your feels. Late night drives alone.
I prefer dylans earlier albums
Better than I expected, but its still Bob...
He's a bit wail-y sometimes but good songs overall
John Prine nous avait à ce stade bien plus impressionné par sa gentillesse que Dylan par son nez rempli d'air.
Seems chill. It's growing on me a bit with every song. Still, I think I'm unlikely to go back to it later.
Pretty enjoyable.
Everytime I hear, read about or watch Bob Dylan I think he's a wanker but this actually wasn't bad
de tres bons sons, je me serai bien passé du son de 16mn ou il dit knock knock knock highlands a de multiples reprises, 3/5
There's a heavy atmosphere on Time Out of Mind that creates a new landscape for Dylan to explore, but he mostly sticks to standard ballads and polished blues. Some great writing here, Highlands excluded, which is exhausting and uninteresting in every conceivable way for Dylan. Fav tracks: Make You Feel My Love, Not Dark Let and Love Sick
I like this album well enough, and some of the poetry is really compelling. But I feel like most of the music is Dylan-by-numbers, vaguely bluesy rambling. Highlands is the worst offender: a 16-minute storysong where Bob complains about having to explain that he reads women authors. It may be lauded as his return to form, but I don’t think it really touches his 60s and 70s output for originality or significance. Worth it for Dylan acolytes but maybe few others. Favourite track: Not Dark Yet
Very pleasant listening. I like Bob Dylan's voice. But the songs weren't really interesting enough to fully catch and hold my attention either,
I like some of Dylan's earlier political folky albums. I also like this bluesy personal instrospection version of him too.
Does his voice get even weirder with age? Like Highway 61 Revisited, this one took me a bit to get used to, but I did enjoy it. I could probably revisit (hehe) Highway 61, because I liked that better than this, but still found this to be a great collection of songs, albeit a little too long. Most relatable part was when he said "I'm listening to Neil Young, someone's always saying 'turn it down'" Saved: Love Sick, Standing in the Doorway
3/5 okeyish, nothing great
My first of many Dylan albums on this list. From later in his career, it seems as though a 90's Dylan has grown a more grizzled singing voice, giving the songs a bit more edge. Most of it is a pretty easy listen though. Nice songwriting (as expect from Bob Dylan), but never much of an impact. I think you need to be a certain kind of person to really enjoy Bob Dylan, and I'm just not that person. Overall it's a fine album.
wow, Dylan's still churning out great albums in the 90s. good to know, this has some really nice bluesy folk rock to it, nice warm hazy production.
Not Dark Yet is good and there’s other stuff on here worth exploring
Bit samey for me, good background music but wouldn’t listen to it again. Three really good tracks in amongst it. Not Dark Yet, Standing In The Doorway and Make You Feel My Love
Liked the "Standing in the Doorway". This one is worth the whole album.
This did it a little more for me than the older Dylan albums I've listened to here. It seems a little less folksy, a little more edge and variety than the 60s stuff. Not sure if I will revisit but I like it.
I
I expected to hate this but I didn't
Eh. His voice was most iffy. Some jams toward the end tho.
I love bob Dylan’s lyrics but I just don’t like his voice. I listened to this album on YouTube and the quality of the recordings were so terrible I couldn’t hear the lyrics even on full blast. Fav track the highlands. I feel like that’s classic Dylan
twas fine
My relationship with Dylan's discography peters out around the mid 70's - pretty much with Desire. I don't hate this, or any of the latter days stuff I've heard, but neither does it change my mind on the topic.
Amazing! He’s so good!
Aaaah, Dylan… - Dylan könnte ALLES machen und es würde von seinen Jüngern immer noch als Geniestreich verklärt werden. Mich amüsiert das, ihm dabei zuzuhören, wie er kontinuierlich an seiner Legende strickt.
l Like it. Might actually make me give Dylan more of a chance
90s Dylan... I actually liked it! “Make You Feel My Love” is on this one (made famous by Adele, had no idea it was a cover). Some solid grooves on this one.
Yeah, that Adele tune is good
Honestly, thought I would like it better. I had a hard time paying attention and not a whole lot stuck out to me. Rough to rate, but I think it's about a 4/8.
I feel similar to this album that I feel with a lot of Dylan albums. It's fine, good even, but I feel like it drags on a bit. I like it and I recognize that it is well done, but when I listen to it, I'm never really all that into it. 3/5
It's a pretty good. Songwriting is very good as usual and I like the more ambient sound this album has. I do think the songs are a bit too long, but other then that. It's a pretty solid album
Okay
A very bluesy Dylan. Reminds me a lot of Clapton's solo material. I like the full band feel, but I feel like there's been too much reverb on Dylan's voice. A pleasant listen, but I did drift in and out a little. Favorite tracks: "Dirt Road Blues", "Million Miles"
Solid. Not my favorite thing, but I liked it more than I expected
3.5/5. Quite lengthy, not much I think I'll go back to from this, very country and blues-ish, not much my cup of tea. Standout Tracks: Million Miles, Can't Wait, Highlands
I like the unique production and the fact that its different, although its a bit too long. Still, Bob can make some good music even past his golden age and silver age.
sounded like he was trying to rip off himself from earlier in his career
I've never understand Dylan's appeal. Even when the music is interesting to me, I can't get by the vocals. There are a handful of Dylan tunes I like, and none of them are here.
Raddled and wrecked. Found it both palatable and ponderous.
the last dylan album on the list. there are several good songs on here that are ruined by the production as well as the normal bob dylan singing
Not the worst Bob Dylan album I've heard. He sings a lot less like Bob Dylan on this album, so that's good. Don't have much else to say about it.
First off, every blues song that Dylan does sounds the same, dreary. To me it's an album full of B sides, maybe C sides that lull you into world of indifference.
Wat saai.
Ben niet zo fan van zijn stem
This is my 4th Dylan album from the list, and I believe there are 7. This is better than most of the others. However, that's a low bar. And 72 minutes long? Ugh. "She wrote me a letter And it was so kind She put down in writing What was in her mind " GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE. POET?!? HANG IT UP, BOB I do like the bluesy stuff on the album: guitar licks, rhythm section, and the occasional Wurlitzer piano/organ. One the whole, it's not for me. How I feel about this album: Watching my wife drink out of a fancy tumbler with an inch and half of amber liquid, I'm stricken by just how cool that looks. Whiskey tastes like gasoline to me, not "smoky, peaty, and with hints of oak" or whatever. It's fucking gross. I REALLY want to like it; I just don't. I feel like there must be something wrong with ME because so many people do like it. I wish I understood what people like about this whiskey. And Bob Dylan. The handful of songs I liked brought this to ⭐⭐ from ⭐. There just wasn't enough for three ⭐⭐
bob’s voice certainly reaching characterful heights… highlands
Did Moe from The Simpsons knock out Bob Dylan in the recording studio and share his angelic voice for this album? There was not much variety throughout the album. Neither in instrumentation nor composition. It quickly became a muddy and blurry slow-blues show that has just enough power to rock your grandpa's socks off.
Overrated
Yeah yeah, Dylan, great.
Thought twice, wasn't alright
I keep trying to like Bob Dylan. I keep failing.
Holy shit. and to think his voice has bad in the 60s. terrible.
Another one.
better than I expected, but still bob dylan.
Review - a Dylan album from the '90s seemed an odd choice but honestly it's not bad. His voice has gotten very gravelly, and the songs are ok. It's like every other song is good, and the other tracks are kind of lame blues rock. A better album than I expected, but not great. There are about 8 other Dylan albums I think you need to hear over and above this. Score - 5/10 Need to listen? NO
Standing in the doorway might be the first Bob Dylan song I've heard that I'd actually say I enjoyed ok. Not great, but ok. This album is more enjoyable than the others of his that I've heard, but I still find his voice grating, style annoying, and lyrics nonsensical. This was just slightly less extreme. After the album finished, amazon autoplayed a song from an earlier album, and it was striking the difference. I think Bob needed to calm down some.
It was alright. I'm torn between 2 and 3. Still got respect for Bob Dylan but this album just wasn't my thang. 2
I don't hate this album, and I'm surprised by that. Dylan's rasp really suits the music well (when it's overpowering his usual nasally sound) and is kind of enjoyable. The straight ahead blues is pretty enjoyable. But oh my God is this album too long. Most songs are 5 minutes or longer, and for some reason they feel about twice as long as that.
He's really trying for that whole sultry country-folk blues thing, huh. I'm not going to pretend like I have a clue about Dylan's discography past the big ones, but this sure lacks anything at all. Also too damn long.
Great lyrics and instrumentation.
I don't care how many Bob Dylan albums you throw on here-i still don't like his voice
I started out thinking I was going to like this one better. His voice is different, kind of Tom Waits lite , and the production style is different. But no, it just goes on and on and on and quite quickly lost me. There is absolutely no need for a 16 minute song that sounds the same the whole way through. And some of the lyrics are cringeworthy, I said what I said. I don’t get Dylan
I actually don't mind much Dylan, but this was a rough listen. 2/5
Blues night in the old people's home
4/28/26. Still not the biggest Dylan guy. Songs on this one are okay, just didn't pull me in even with its heavier blues sound.
Third Bob Dylan album I think and nope, I still cannot stand his voice. It’s probably the worst of the three so far, but the instrumentals are fine. Make You Feel My Love is a great song, but it sounds horrendous when he sings it.
90s Bob Dylan doesn't do much for me at all. It feels pretty generic.
Oh Bob Dylan, we have four more albums to go.
Did not like
Tedious 2.2/5
If you thought the rest of the album was bad, just wait until you get to the 16 minutes long final track with no variation in it's contents. Also just because it's supposed to be an environmental soundscape doesn't mean I'll like every track echoing constantly.
so long jesus christ
Slow and melancholic blues/folk rock. It's not bad but it's not really my style and I didn't enjoy it as much as his other albums. His raspy voice kind of matches the tone of the album at least.
his voice is extremely scrongly on this album
Boring Bob
I have an appreciation for structure of some of Bob Dylan's songs, but for the most part I cannot stand his performances nor his albums. Whenever his songs work for me they are always a cover by someone else. On top of this, my family and I have had interactions with Robert Zimmerman. In a small town in Oregon two decades ago he New York-ed it off a curb and my wife nearly hit him with the car. He truly seemed oblivious to anything around him. Fortunately we avoided him. Aside from that, I cannot believe that I am saying this, I enjoyed the Tom Wait-esque "Love Sick". I think there a few good reasons for that: Daniel Lanois' production skills were well suited to a very tired Bob Dylan sound by that time, his vocal performance are a tad less annoying than usual on this album, and finally, mercifully, there were no squealing harmonicas nearby. Aside from that, I am not convinced that this album belongs on the list. It is not an album that was a prototype for a new sub-genre. It is not an album that moves in new directions at all, really. It is the same blues, folk, and rock that we had been getting from Bob for around 3 decades by that point. And, while technically a commercial success, it was not popular by any means, so it kind of fails all of the criteria for being one of the 1,001 albums you should treat yourself to before you die. If you have heard other Bob Dylan albums, you aren't really missing anything. Furthermore, there were plenty of other more interesting albums in 1997 that deserve this spot instead one more album by a legacy artist who already has too many albums on this list. Notable tracks: "Love Sick", "Not Dark Yet" (and yes, I will be seeking out covers of these tracks to add to my library)
Somewhat forgettable album, I like the style but none of the songs stood out. I was expecting more as this was the first Bob Dylan album in the list I have gone through
This was fine, but not something I’m really interested in. I did like the bluesy feel of some of the songs.
The best I can say about this is that I was neutral on many of these songs. I don't find Bobby D to be this lyrical genius, nor do I like his voice, so I'm not sure what enjoyment there is to find in this.
Почему то что Дилан, что Нил Янг не вызывают какого-то особого впечатления в остатке после прослушиваниия. Что слушал, что нет. Этот альбом не исключение
This will forever be ingrained in my memory as the album that stole Album of the Year from Radiohead for OK Computer. Full disclosure, I dislike Dylan's voice on a good day, when he was young. I can barely listen to anything he's done past 1975. While he's made some classics, he's still one of the most overrated artists of the 20th century imho. This record shouldn't have garnered more acclaim than Cohen's 10 New Songs or something, but boomers gonna boomer. Alternative offerings from 1997: Notorious BIG - Life After Death Fluke - Risotto Mouse on Mars - Autoditacker Bjork - Homogenic (one of her few not in the list?) Portishead - Portishead (their best album) Carl Craig - More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art
I like this slightly more than Blonde on Blonde. Emphasis on slightly. Really, I feel the same way about this one as I did with Blonde on Blonde except that I thought Dylan's voice wasn't quite as annoying. I still don't really like his voice though. The longer the album went on the less I "liked" it.
Never been a Bob Dylan fan, goes back to the whole singer/songwriter, lyrics first thing. I kept waffling back and forth between a 2 or a 3, but I've run out of patience and it gets a 2.
30 minutes beyond a 3
boring
I respect him for the music legend that he is, but this style of music is really not for me. So much of what is on here is this super slow folky type of music and I've said it before but it seems like a lot of people take music that is slower to be more artistic and contemplative in the same way many people perceive someone who takes their time to talk as more intelligent and confident. A bit of a flawed lens. The perception lacks depth and exceptions. Very much a lot of the same sounds and not the variety I would expect of such a large list of music.
I'm not a fan of Dylan
This book contains no less then 7 Bob Dylan albums, making me wonder whether the book should have a hard limit on how many times the same band can be chosen. I don't love Bob Dylan on a good day so listening to the like, maybe 5th best Bob Dylan album is not something I'm going to enjoy. I feel I could end the review there, I just don't really have much to say and I didn't enjoy it. It was extremely boring, largely about his ex, and felt like it went on forever. Shout out to Highlands though, a song that manages to feel longer then a fucking feature length film and drags on to the point of actually looping around to being somehow impressive in its monotony. Apparantly Bob Dylan didn't like the production on this so we at least agree on one thing. Very low 2, largely because I just heard Elvis so I KNOW what a 1 sounds like right now to me.
Stfu and let me at least enjoy the instrumentals.
Dirge
Bob Dylan ei oo muutamaa biisiä lukuunottamatta ominta musaa. Kuten ei ollut tämä herran paluulevykään. Vähän tasapaksu, eikä oikeastaan mikään biisi erottunut joukosta.
Good thing Timmy Chalamet has pissed me off because I can't stand Bob Dylan and wouldn't want to have to suffer through that BD movie
Dylan never really hit a chord with me. I know it's a classic. My energy I should give more attention to the lyrics.
Make you feel my love is the best of the bunch, and the shortest, which I don't think is a coincidence. It also finishes with a fade-out, because Bob had run out of ideas, or had too many and didn't want to stop and finish one before jumping onto the next. And that's the album; unfinished, unrefined. Had this shortly after Rain Dogs and really hits that this is just a watered-down rush-job parody of Waits.
Dylan is overrated, significantly. He's not a good singer, and his songs amble. Has a decent cover here and there, but I don't care for his original stuff, ESPECIALLY this late in his career. Pass.
Just because a legendary artist like Bob Dylan releases an album doesn't make it essential listening. For me, this album really hurts the credibility of this list
I assumed that Bob Dylan would appear on this list sooner or later, and having only really heard the biggest hits, I was looking forward to exploring his discography. Unfortunately, the law and randomness started me here on this mid-90s snooze fest. This felt like mundane, old rocker style rock, and left me disappointed when I really wanted to explore the folk and early electric guitar years. I'm sure that will come up at some point, but for now it's left me wanting.
Definitely prefer earlier Dylan to this. If people thought his voice was rough in the 60s, it was worse here. Lyrically he’s still great but yeah, he doesn’t sound amazing here
A funny man with a funny voice
Way too long not captivating at all
Reader, I listened to Bob Dylan. I loved Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan was a friend of mine. Time Out of Mind, you're not (good) Bob Dylan. Greatly prefer modern times for late era Dylan but all of this pales so so so much to his peak.
“The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face.”
Not my favorite Dylan album
just gimme real Tom Waits Will I listen to again: 1%
90’s Folk ⭐️Love Sick
1.5
Not a fan
Alles, was Bob Dylan anfasst, klingt maximal okay und meistens sehr langweilig.
Besser als Blood On The Tracks, aber immer noch: Schnarch. Besonders Highlands...
His voice on this album certainly isn't what it was.
Ohhhh Bobby D. I nearly gave you stars, three, but the album dragged on and the last song is 15 fucking minutes of just rambling. I never was a fan of yours, but I did find this more tolerable than the other Dylan album I got 2 days ago.
Someone wake up Bob
2/5
No song should be 16 min. An okay listen but not for me.
Earlier stuff was much better!
This was not what I was expecting to hear. It sounded incredibly dated, like it was something released in the 60s. Might as well have been.
Boring and don't like his voice here
Highlight: Dirt Road Blues In a nutshell: don’t call it a comeback. More blues focused than anticipated, which is refreshing for a Dylan album. I tend to identify him as that folk poet with a guitar. Great guitar and atmospheric use of Hammond organ… AND I DO NOT HEAR A HARMONICA ON ALL THE TRACKS! SWEET HALLELUJAH! It’s fine as a blues/country album. Just not the masterpiece critics and the Grammy academy claim it to be. Overall: 3/10
Every song sounds the same, it’s too long, and his voice is even worse than when he was younger.
Bob Dylan is old and sad. 2 stars because Not Dark Yet was alright.
Hootin n hollerin
