Really nice upbeat album

Feels a bit dated but good fun and represents its era very well.

3/5, just. Came out the same year as the Little Richard album we had a few weeks ago, and it just isn't as good. This album is a little bit twee, a bit too soft, and doesn't really have the oomph that even the Little Richard album did. I don't know fifties music well at all, but this embodies what I think of when I think of middle of the road towards the end of the decade. Maybe this is a bit unfair, but I feel he'd be much less well-known know had he not died in that tragic plane crash.

Really solid stuff. It's got some well known classics and the ones that are lesser known are still pretty great. It's a shame he died so young, who knows what else Buddy had in him.

Not the type of music I generally listen to, but this is a good album! It's a good one to have on in the background while doing stuff around the house - nice and upbeat!

Like all albums of its era, this contained a lot of killer, and some filler. The best songs are at the top of the pantheon.

It is really hard to rate this. Buddy Holly is so engrained in the history of pop music that it is unfair to judge without that lens. I appreciate it but since it set the stage for so much later that it sounds a bit quaint now. It is a shame we never saw him develop as an artist. 4.5/5

My parents were lovers not only of one another but also of the original rock n’ rollers- Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, all those cats. And, hailing from their home state of Texas, of course, the beloved Mr. Buddy Holly. I was conceived (the inevitable consequence of turtle dovin’) at the end of summer in 1958, about a year following the release of 'The Chirping Crickets,' so I’m pretty sure I got a dose or two of Buddy in and out of the womb. By the time I became more fully conscious of music, The Beatles were all the rage. Buddy Holly was just a little ahead of the curve for me, so I’ve mostly been unaware of his sound save for all the classic rock artists who eventually covered his songs- some really good, like The Rolling Stones ‘Not Fade Away’ or Derek and the Dominos’ ‘It’s Too Late,’ and some kinda lame, like James Taylor’s ‘Everyday.’ It was nice to finally hear the originals. And, in spite of the poor quality of the recording, and the awful harmonies of the Crickets, Holly himself still mostly shines on this debut LP. I was familiar with his signature chord strumming solo technique, but not how fast he could also pick individual notes. He pretty well tears it up on ‘That’ll Be the Day’ and ‘I’m Looking for Someone to Love.’ And his singing, at least on the rockers, is really good too; a rougher edge to his voice than I had previously heard, like on the opener, ‘Oh, Boy!’ I think there are really two Buddy Hollys on this LP: the rockin’, confident, swaggering Holly who proclaims to any girl who’s dissing him: ‘You don’t know what you’ve been a’ missin,’ chicky baby, and ‘My love is bigger than a Cadillac.’ He can also really turn a phrase like, ‘Tell me how to keep your love… Tell me how you keep the love within your heart from me.’ I like this Buddy. Then, there’s the other Buddy I don’t really care for- the deflated, dejected, needy Buddy who especially starts whining towards the end of side two. ‘An Empty Cup (& a Broken Date),’ is one unfortunate example. Eliminate those 3-4 songs and you’ve got a rockin’, tight little LP, with a succinct punk rock sensibility. Or more accurately, it was the early punk rockers were really mimicking a Buddy Holly sensibility.

So apparently this band was the first rock band, with two guitars, bass and drums. This album is very 50s. Very soppy, hetero-normative love songs for the most parts. Looking past the lyrics, most of the songs are pretty simple in retrospect, pretty much all around 2 minutes long. About what you'd expect from 50s rock. They have their charms though, and make for a pleasant listening experience. The best songs were probably 'Not Fade Away' and 'Maybe Baby' The instrumentation here, again, is largely simplistic and, while good, has, again, been done better later. There's some good guitar parts on 'I'm Lookin' for Someone to Love' though. This album has it's fair share of filler, however. All in all I'd rate this one 3 stars. This was a pleasant experience, if dated.

4 stars when the time and space lens is applied. Looking for Someone to Love had my toe tapping. A bit sickly sweet which is to be said of almost everything I've heard from white late 50s rock and roll. Some nice lead breaks scattered throughout out though. Get sick of the backing vocals pretty quickly.

Not a lot to say about this. Pretty cheezy. Still a bit catchy. An ok listen. I'm sure it was edgy for it's time. Pompadours and red ties and all.

Some eternal singles, but the slow numbers are 'dreamboats and petticoats' mush and he's not really that good a vocalist to make them speak now. Still, only 25 minutes. Shortest album so far.

The “Chirping” Crickets by Buddy Holly and the Crickets (1957) This classic album is noteworthy for its influence on major artists and, in retrospect, reminiscent of the lamentably untimely demise of Buddy Holly (in a plane crash, along with The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens—February 3, 1959, “the day the music died”). But as an album it stands on its own, within the context of early rock’n roll, setting forth a collection of jukebox friendly dance tunes with lyrics expressing the simple, shallow (but intense), G-rated yearnings of the male teenage heart. I love you, baby, oo-wah oo-wah. The compositions are strongly rooted in gospel and country melodies and chord structures, with R&B stylings. But because of the limitations of 1957 recording technology, I recommend putting away the headphones and listening through the smallest speakers you can find. An iPhone would work fine, set on ‘mono’, and held close to one ear like a cheap pocket transistor radio (if you’re old enough to remember what that is). On the minus side, the backing vocals of The Crickets are substandard, with strained range, poor blend, and continuous pitch problems, nearly all on the flat side. But this defect is more than compensated for by the strong and creative vocals and high reverb guitar playing of Holly himself. Holly’s vocal art is marked by a comfortably casual tone, and the pervasive use of percussive elements such as glottal stops, guttural pulses, ‘hiccups’, stutters, scoops, squeaks, rapid rhythmic vibrato, and crisp register breaks. It’s delightfully inventive, even if it might sound silly to prog rock aficionados of the 70s and 80s, and fans of later pop, metal, and hip hop. This is a record to be valued chiefly for its historical significance, unless your lady is ready to make the bubble gum pop, kick off the saddle oxfords, roll down the bobby socks, and hit the hardwood floor. 3/5

One of the rock & roll giants of the 50's, Buddy Holly mostly sings lovey-dovey songs for teenagers who want nothing more than music with the electric guitar. While seemingly mundane today, these songs were the cutting edge of American popular music as we know it today. Short 'n sweet: that's this album. It ain't bad, but it's got little depth to it. At least, not to kind of depth we're used to. Standout out track is Rock ME My Baby, which features great use of dynamics and guitar work. The slower ballads wash over me, but the final product is by no means bad. Definitely worthy of making the list.

These old school albums are very much of their time. Unfortunately The Beatles have always been as far back as I can go.

It’s tough to get into 50s era rock for me just because of how upbeat and simple it is but obviously that doesn’t take away from the influence it had, viewing at in context of when it released. This album is fun even if it’s not something I’d listen to a lot.

Absolutely chirpin'. 26 minutes of unbridled 50's American joy. Imagine knocking off That'll be the day and Oh boy in your debut album, sensational stuff.

All songs sounded pretty similar. Not my favorite album would not listen again.

Pretty much exactly what you can expect from a 50s rock album. Songs all about love, pretty simple musically but still pleasant. Nothing exceptional though. 5/10.

12 songs clocking in at 26 minutes. Buddy Holly was the original punk rocker! Amazing the influence that he had given such a small body of work. What a talented artist. I wish we could have seen what he would have done if given another 50 years or so on this earth. It's damn shame. 4 stars.

Good old music. Background.

This is an important record. The Fender strat probably wouldn't be the guitar it is today without Buddy Holly making it so iconic and Buddy's playing on this record does sound pretty innovative. It's very rhythmic and you can hear that classic Fender twang cutting through all over the place. I was also surprised by how much edge there is in his voice. You can clearly hear some blues influence in there. Of course, by today's standards it's a very clean and tame sounding record. Hard to imagine what it was like to hear this in the 50's. For me personally, I'm unlikely to revisit this much but I can appreciate its importance in history. Great, classic record.

I liked it. The highs are really high and the rest of it is pretty solid 50's rock. Don't know if I can justify giving it more than a 3 though, but liked it.

3.6 - White doo-wop pop with nice vocal harmonies and zippy 2.5 minute songs. Buddy Holly’s voice is surprisingly rich tinged with edgy emotion. One surprise is the reverb on the verse in “It’s Too Late” that adds a pretty shadow to the lyric. Some of the guitar solos kind of rip, too. Overall, it’s hokey as expected but it’s good bubblegum.

Can't say I'd ever listened to Buddy Holly before. He sounded a lot more rock and roll than I expected. Then again, that's probably because I expected him to sound more like Weezer... so I blame Rivers Cuomo.

A really interesting collection of songs, bridging the older, softer, slower folk forms and rock. The ending in particular gives it that "collection of songs" tinge, though, dropping us off in the middle of a thought. The musical choices are prescient but not quite inspired.

Usually 50s pop albums consist of one great hit, one ok hit, then nothing else but garbage. But these tracks are above average. Some I would even go as far as calling them pretty good. Love the mellow rock sound and back vocals. Songs are short and sweet. Am I'm crazy for thinking "Not Fade Away" sounds like Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation"? This is one instance where I don't think the album has aged well, but in the context of its time, it is a superb record with tracks you don't get exhausted by the end.

An endearingly dorky amalgam of styles. Doo-wop, country honkin' vocals and that jangly Strat. More spacious and immediate than I'd remembered, I dig that cardboard box beat. Way better than Bill fuckin' Haley.

This is a very simple classic rock n roll album, but it deserves space on this list and deserves many merits to be what it is. This is not a great album for our "modern" ears, but its importance transcends some "modern" rules and must be analyzed with this in mind.

Yeaaah not my style. Too croony for me.

The baby boy of rock n’ roll’s only album. It’s undeniable the influence that Buddy Holly and the Crickets had on major rock stars today, and it’s just as easy to see the influences that Elvis, Bill Haley and Hank Williams had on him. This album is full of great pop hits of the 50’s, and anybody who is a fan of that style will love this record. I quite enjoy it myself, but it’s hard for me to find the whole record holds up to bodies of work that came out in the 60’s and beyond. Expect fun, early breakthroughs, and timeless tunes when listening to it. Favorite Songs: That’ll Be The Day, Not Fade Away (I’m a sucker for a Bo Diddley bit) Least Favorite: Tell Me How

I liked it more than I thought I would, maybe because I've a soft spot for Buddy.

3.5/5. I've never listened to a Buddy Holly album, but this is kind of what I expected. Easy listening, not bad.

Rock and Roll is old enough where you can argue for a legitimate Mount Rushmore consisting of the 4 most important figures in its history. Any Mount Rushmore that doesn't include Chuck Berry (you know, MARVIN'S cousin) and Elvis Presley can't be taken seriously. Those two are etched in stone (pun intended). The other two spots are up for the debate, and I'm not going to argue with anyone who puts Buddy Holly in one of those vacancies. Sometimes I feel like I can over praise Buddy Holly. That might stem from the fact that some generations only know the name from the title of a Weezer song. This album is missing some of my favorite Buddy Holly tunes, but I can't hold that against it.

Old timely and fun!

I grew up on Buddy Holly, my Dd loved them and played them all the time. This album has great songs on it and I reall yenjoyed it.

До сих пор харизматичный и угарный певец, пусть иногда слегка пидорка даёт. Но, конечно, сейчас это слушать совершенно необязательно уже, любая свежая на 57 год идея получила давно уже более современное и качественное развитие. 5/10

Альбом своего времени. Но, чувствуется, что из тех, которые не только отражали своё время, но и формировали. Есть у этой музыки стиль, чарующая эстетика. Но всё же недостаточно мощная, чтобы конкурировать с более поздними работами. Быстро цепляет, быстро надоедает... забывается, вероятно, тоже быстро. Тем не менее, когда услышал Not Fade Away, то сразу почувствовал что где-то уже именно её слышал. И, да, это один из 2 треков, на которые есть статьи в ру-вики. К сожалению, список использования в медиа не обнаружил. Буду думать, что Mafia II. Каждый из треков альбома чем-то интересен, эксплуатации эстетики здесь всё же нет. Отличный альбом, чтобы погрузиться в эпоху 50-х. И, вероятно, неплохой альбом, чтобы осознать, что долго в ней пребывать довольно утомительно. 7/10

This is a nice, fun and innocent album very in keeping with the time. Would love to have been around to go see these in their hay day. Go to a diner. Have a Coca Cola. Even though I can still do literally all of those things.

I often talk about the Beatles like they’re two different bands: the early stuff like “Hard Day’s Night” and “Help”, where they sing about love between two people; and the shift right around “Rubber Soul/Revolver” where they start singing about Love, between ALL people. And the early stuff is fine, but the later stuff is truly iconic and world changing. What I’m getting at here is, this album is Buddy Holly’s “early stuff”, where he’s singing about a boy and a girl, and what boys and girls do. And it’s great, it really is. In fact, it inspired the early Beatles IMMENSELY. But, man! If only Buddy Holly had lived long enough to get to his “world-changing” period… maybe there wouldn’t even BE a Beatles, at least, not like we think of them today. Buddy had a head start, after all. Tragic loss. Oh well, there’s some great fun songs on here. “Oh Boy” and “That’ll Be the Day”, in particular.

An amazing voice and amazing guitar tone. Not sure why anyone ever wrote another love song, because Buddy Holly covered all the bases on this album. A truly great record.

I am sure that many people held hands to this album and that it was probably controversial at the time it was released.

Didn't think I'd like it but then ended up enjoying it. Half Elvis, half roy or bison, which is to be expected I guess. The slow songs are a bit boring and every song has a very 50s, suburban, milk bar with my best girl and no colored people allowed vibe, but I like the rockabilly. Just wish Buddy would get a bit looser with that but I guess we had to wait for mick and John to do that for us.

It’s decent. I’m sure in it’s time it was revolutionary and I have no doubt that countless artists were inspired by Holly. But I feel like nowadays it just sounds like a 50’s cliche music album. Basically any of these songs could be in the background of a movie set in the fifties and you wouldn’t notice

I like Buddy Holly's voice but the songs are all a bit samey and old

In conclusione: Non ho molto da dire, siamo comunque sempre in un genere molto leggero dove però c'è più la forma canzone che ho apprezzato anche nella sua varietà rispetto magari allo swing classico dove c'è più la componente di improvvisazione. La voce di Buddy Holly mi ha colpito positivamente devo dire. Diciamo che ho sempre il problema della connotazione con questa musica, cioè se me la sento normalmente mi sento un po' scemo quindi non riesco ad arrivare al 4, però per me è un 3.5.

Un dischetto allegro ma finisce lì. Ho trovato interessante il fatto che tutti i pezzi sono cortissimi. Non gli si può voler male ma manco bene.

First half: Early Beatles did it better. He does a weird hiccup thing like Elvis sometimes. Second half: much better in terms of style. notable mentions: That'll Be the Day - actually good An Empty Cup - mad lyrics about heartbreak and coca cola Rock me my baby - some HS junior definitely got fingered to this song at some point The early tracks are all PLEASE LOVE ME and the ending tracks are all heartbreak vibes so thats interesting. All in all, nostalgic vibes about young white romance with some harmonized rapey vibes. 4/10. wouldnt listen to the album in its entirety again - maybe those songs mentioned.

The birth of rock and roll in one album! RIP Buddy Holley; he was one heck of a musician and singer taken way too young by an accident. The songs on this album almost sound timeless, as if you could listen to them anytime and think they're groundbreaking. I believe this is a testament to Buddy Holley's skills.

Now this is how it’s done: tight, tidy harmonies; memorable tunes; and over before you get sick of their schtick.

Really simple and captures the sound of the era

The ones you know (Oh Boy!, Not Fade Away, Maybe Baby, It's Too Late, That'll Be The Day) are straight fire, though not a raging one. Just a few isolated fires, actually. Perfectly controlled and never threatening to spread. In other words, Holly wasn't a purveyor of the type of excess the 60s myth tells us his brand of R'n'R turned into (but probably didn't). He was a formalist, a model railway builder, a de rigger songsmith. When he was great--which wasn't all the time, as the duller numbers here testify to--he crafted rockers where every strum, hum and warble was in service to a rhythm that never muscles through like Chuck Berry or skitters tilt-a-whirl like Little Richard but doesn't need to. Tiny paintbrush and glue gun in hand in hand, Holly crafted space for everything to breathe, creating the effect of songs more compulsive and propulsive than they really are. And effect is all. The apotheosis is when everything but the drums and Holly's voice drop out in the fourth chorus of That'll Be the Day. It goes "When. You (boom). Make (boom). Me (boom). Cry (boom)-y (boom)." At that moment, you can literally hear early-Beatles John Lennon take the baton from him. Except not really - that's preposterous.

I know this music is super important in a historical sense, but it's just not really for me. I definitely understand why it's on the list. I'll give it 3 stars for its impact but I wouldn't really choose to listen to it on my own.

Most of my 1950s music is jazz, with some blues thrown in. I'm not very knowledgeable about the rock canon, and I guess the closest albums I am familiar with would be Elvis Presley's first two or Bo Diddley's early stuff. Even compared to Elvis, this is pretty saccharine stuff. Like some of the other records in the 1001 list, I can appreciate the historical influence and importance without being personally enthralled. 12 tracks in 25 mins is impressive, and a reminder that concision is normally a virtue.

Some fun and boppin' classic rock and roll. Gets an extra star for the sheer charisma Buddy Holly puts forward on the mic.

Oh boy! What an album! Had me bopping around my living room like...a chirping cricket -Until the third song anyway. Then things turned dark. It's been dark ever since. So dark. So bleak. So cold.

It was pretty generic 50s music in my opinion. Not very much stood out to me. It definitely wasn’t bad but it was seemed kind of bland so I don’t have much to say about it. Favorite song: That’ll Be The Day Decent 6/10

Rock roots in its fines expression, a little bit of doo wop and classic rock lineup. Just for the historic value this is worth a listen.

What a sweet record from Buddy Holly! While I don't remember ever giving The "Chirping" Crickets a full listen before, I'm pretty sure I was listening from the womb as he was someone my parents had on the radio or spinning in the console. As one of the early rock-n-roll troubadours, his short 22 years of life not only influenced rock music moving forward, but was a definitive variable in my own musical development. The record is wonderful from beginning to end and has just inspired a 50s rock-n-roll listening party here in me. All I've listened to since yesterday morning is Buddy Holly, The Everly Brothers, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, Ricky Nelson and more. With fresh ears I'm transported back to my childhood and the childhoods of my parents. Thanks for your music, Buddy! It's made a difference in endless lives. RIP.

good, great classic sound and totally enjoyable

One of those defining classics that exists at a very particular time and place. It's an extremely well-performed, well-written album deserving of a place on this list for its historical importance alone, but it still holds up musically more than 60 years after its recording.

Es un disco de Buddy Holly... que todavía no suena como a Buddy Holly. El disco es bueno, se siente mucho el sonido de algo que está por llegar pero que todavía no cambia al mundo, se puede sentir la precuela de lo que un Lennon, Jagger y Dylan adolescentes podrían estar escuchando. Quitando la nostalgia de la importancia del album, para un debut es bastante bien hecho. Las canciones son de chamacos y suenan profesionales, divertidas, con sentimiento. El disco tiene un poco de todo, solos cortos inmediatos y una voz muy bien trabajada. Se siente como el inicio de un diagrama de "¿qué es el rock and roll? listo para sentar lo que va a ser la mayor parte del género de manera masiva quizá hasta que llegue Rubber Soul. El hecho de saber que era el inicio de una carrera tan corta pero prometedora lo hace más vívido

It’s so interesting to listen to this because it sounds so tame to us now, but I just have to imagine how scandalous it sounded to adult ears at the time.

Fun album! First side starts off great with "Oh Boy!" and "Not Fade Away". Side 2 picks back up strong with "That'll Be The Day" although perhaps a bit weaker after that.

Algo muy interesante que viene de escuchar discos como este es que rompen ese estereotipo de que las grabaciones “viejas” suenan mal. Por supuesto, los micrófonos y amplificadores todavía no estaban tan desarrollados, y las técnicas de postproducción apenas daba sus primeros pasos, pero esto es evidencia de que tenemos tecnología para grabar sonido de alta calidad desde ¡hace más de 60 años! Hablando de la música en sí, sé que Buddy Holly es una gran influencia para el rock & roll y por tanto un pilar de mucha de la música que tenemos hoy en día. Puedo identificar cosas en el disco que seguramente influenciaron a Elvis Presley, los Beach Boys y por supuesto a los Beatles. Independientemente del valor histórico, la música es agradable y fácil de escuchar. A pesar de que el rockabilly no es mi género favorito pude escuchar el disco sin problema tres veces al hilo. Escuchar esto automáticamente me hace querer una malteada de vainilla y una hamburguesa double decker con mostaza y catsup.

3.5| sin duda un pilar en la base de toda la música rock, incorporar 2 guitarras? eso es del diablo, colocar los coros después de haber grabado la música?, jugar con los tonos y volumen de las guitarras? a que loco se le ocurren esas cosas? que tanto habría hecho si no hubiera muerto repentinamente? habría una superbanda con Ritchie Valens y otros?

Una muy obvia adición a la lista; quizá hoy suena ñoñísimo y a nadie sorprende, pero lo que hizo Buddy Holly sentó un montón de precedentes e hizo el puente entre música negra y el público blanco. Con todo y lo ñoño que suena a ratos, me gusta mucho el estilo vocal que usa en algunas canciones y la manera de tener dos guitarras haciendo cosas distintas. No será un disco que tenga a la mano para poner play cualquier día, pero algunas canciones sueltas pueden venir muy bien.

A little goofy, but very pleasant and enjoyable to listen to.

I was brought up on this stuff, Dad was a huge Buddy Holly fan. These songs are ingrained in my soul, I knew them all before I even knew what music was. They've always been there, and I love them like family members. It's all so damn cheerful as well, how can you not love it! I wish there were more than 25 minutes of this.

it was ok. i guess i get why it's on this list?

the 50s are the first decade of music i really care about that much, and probably the first decade that's all that interesting outside of like a few notable albums or w/e. maybe someones gonna see this thats really really really into 40s music but i doubt it. if u are that person, please give me recommendations, i'd love to have my horizons expanded :D personally i think it makes since, the 50s are the first decade with many musicians that get referenced a lot. even if someone like frank sinatra or buddy holly or miles davis or whatever is fairly far removed at this point from modern music, u can probably still recognize their names. maybe ur even really into their music!!! i think one thing everyone can agree on, though, is that a lot of 50s music is kinda lame. either quality-wise, or just sort of intangibly lame. obviously this isnt a blanket statement but like...doo-wop, 50s pop, most 50s rock, all that stuff is kinda lame by now. it doesnt have to be in a bad way though!! this album is very lame and silly, but that's just part of the charm. it's fun!!! everything here is pretty simple, short, and focused on being catchy, and the full album is under a half hour. probably for the best. if u have it in u to enjoy old-ass rock music this is definitely worth a listen :P

One of my favourite albums ever. Also, one of my favourite anecdote ever, taken from Little Richards self biography "The Life and Times of Little Richard". Angel, a stripper, later on said this MIGHT not be true, but seriously, never fact check a good story. “One time Buddy came into my dressing room while I was jacking off with Angel sucking my titty. Angel had the fastest tongue in the west. She was doing that to me and Buddy took out his thing. She opened up her legs and he put it in her. He was having sex with Angel, I was jacking off, and Angel was sucking me when they introduced his name on stage. He finished and went to the stage still fastening himself up. I’ll never forget that. He came and he went.”
