Fun stuff, could imagine cruising to a main street diner with this bopping from my chevy.

Decent

Fun fun fun! Packed with punch and energy. Short and sweet!

Early rock and roll classic

Oldies.

Not a lot to say about this. Pretty cheezy. Still a bit catchy. An ok listen. I'm sure it was edgy for it's time. Pompadours and red ties and all.

Some eternal singles, but the slow numbers are 'dreamboats and petticoats' mush and he's not really that good a vocalist to make them speak now. Still, only 25 minutes. Shortest album so far.

Fijn geluid toch, die Buddy.

Deedle dee deedle doo

That nerd was alright. Catchy pop tunes. I get the feeling he set some kind of template for a 50's rock 'n' roll sound.

The “Chirping” Crickets by Buddy Holly and the Crickets (1957) This classic album is noteworthy for its influence on major artists and, in retrospect, reminiscent of the lamentably untimely demise of Buddy Holly (in a plane crash, along with The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens—February 3, 1959, “the day the music died”). But as an album it stands on its own, within the context of early rock’n roll, setting forth a collection of jukebox friendly dance tunes with lyrics expressing the simple, shallow (but intense), G-rated yearnings of the male teenage heart. I love you, baby, oo-wah oo-wah. The compositions are strongly rooted in gospel and country melodies and chord structures, with R&B stylings. But because of the limitations of 1957 recording technology, I recommend putting away the headphones and listening through the smallest speakers you can find. An iPhone would work fine, set on ‘mono’, and held close to one ear like a cheap pocket transistor radio (if you’re old enough to remember what that is). On the minus side, the backing vocals of The Crickets are substandard, with strained range, poor blend, and continuous pitch problems, nearly all on the flat side. But this defect is more than compensated for by the strong and creative vocals and high reverb guitar playing of Holly himself. Holly’s vocal art is marked by a comfortably casual tone, and the pervasive use of percussive elements such as glottal stops, guttural pulses, ‘hiccups’, stutters, scoops, squeaks, rapid rhythmic vibrato, and crisp register breaks. It’s delightfully inventive, even if it might sound silly to prog rock aficionados of the 70s and 80s, and fans of later pop, metal, and hip hop. This is a record to be valued chiefly for its historical significance, unless your lady is ready to make the bubble gum pop, kick off the saddle oxfords, roll down the bobby socks, and hit the hardwood floor. 3/5

One of the rock & roll giants of the 50's, Buddy Holly mostly sings lovey-dovey songs for teenagers who want nothing more than music with the electric guitar. While seemingly mundane today, these songs were the cutting edge of American popular music as we know it today. Short 'n sweet: that's this album. It ain't bad, but it's got little depth to it. At least, not to kind of depth we're used to. Standout out track is Rock ME My Baby, which features great use of dynamics and guitar work. The slower ballads wash over me, but the final product is by no means bad. Definitely worthy of making the list.

Old school

Terrible album cover (who thought it was a good idea to have the band squint into the sun), great album. 12 songs in 26 minutes? Wowsers. Some real classics here. Also some terrible, saccharine schlock.

I liked it. Bill and Shannah didn't hate it. Short and sweet. Classic rock 'n' roll guitar licks. Knew a lot of the songs somehow already.

It’s tough to get into 50s era rock for me just because of how upbeat and simple it is but obviously that doesn’t take away from the influence it had, viewing at in context of when it released. This album is fun even if it’s not something I’d listen to a lot.

A good rock and roll album. If i could I'd give it a 3.5

D e va inga crickets på albumet smh!!!

Everyone knows the Buddy Holly story yada yada. This is solid rock and roll (the original kind). If I was rating purely on my own enjoyment this wold be a 4. Also an album you have to listen to before you die

I appreciate the influence this had on the next generation of rock and roll musicians. I can only listen to the cheese that is the C>Am>F>G progression for a song or two though.

"Not Fade Away" is the standout track

Son los de That'll Be the Day (when I'll die). Un 3.

Good short light tunes like rock of that time. Easy to listen to but less sophisticated than I’d prefer

Roots of modern rock and roll.... Fresh for the time and deservedly pop

Cute! Fun!

Good old music. Background.

Fun Short Rock Album, pretty solid

Iconic. Appreciate its importance in Rock n Roll history. Some fun songs as well. 3/5

I liked it. The highs are really high and the rest of it is pretty solid 50's rock. Don't know if I can justify giving it more than a 3 though, but liked it.

3.6 - White doo-wop pop with nice vocal harmonies and zippy 2.5 minute songs. Buddy Holly’s voice is surprisingly rich tinged with edgy emotion. One surprise is the reverb on the verse in “It’s Too Late” that adds a pretty shadow to the lyric. Some of the guitar solos kind of rip, too. Overall, it’s hokey as expected but it’s good bubblegum.

pretty

Can't say I'd ever listened to Buddy Holly before. He sounded a lot more rock and roll than I expected. Then again, that's probably because I expected him to sound more like Weezer... so I blame Rivers Cuomo.

Foundational rock n roll. Wonder what he could have attained if he hasn't died so young.

A really interesting collection of songs, bridging the older, softer, slower folk forms and rock. The ending in particular gives it that "collection of songs" tinge, though, dropping us off in the middle of a thought. The musical choices are prescient but not quite inspired.

Didn't really enjoy this. Every song sounds the same.

lekker leuk hoor.

A pioneering artist, and nice early rock-'n'-roll record, but only the well known songs (That'll be the Day, and Oh Boy!) and a couple of others stood out. 3/5.

The baby boy of rock n’ roll’s only album. It’s undeniable the influence that Buddy Holly and the Crickets had on major rock stars today, and it’s just as easy to see the influences that Elvis, Bill Haley and Hank Williams had on him. This album is full of great pop hits of the 50’s, and anybody who is a fan of that style will love this record. I quite enjoy it myself, but it’s hard for me to find the whole record holds up to bodies of work that came out in the 60’s and beyond. Expect fun, early breakthroughs, and timeless tunes when listening to it. Favorite Songs: That’ll Be The Day, Not Fade Away (I’m a sucker for a Bo Diddley bit) Least Favorite: Tell Me How

I grew up on Buddy Holly, my Dd loved them and played them all the time. This album has great songs on it and I reall yenjoyed it.

Hard to score. Not at all bad but sounds very dated obviously. Clearly good at what he did

Pioneering 50s rock music. It's alright, all music from this era sounds pretty much the same. 6/10

Not really a fan of this. Objectively not terrible but way not my thing.

good album just too old stylistically and culturally to draw me in but could deffo stick on again 3 - decent, could stick on again

This is a nice, fun and innocent album very in keeping with the time. Would love to have been around to go see these in their hay day. Go to a diner. Have a Coca Cola. Even though I can still do literally all of those things.

I am sure that many people held hands to this album and that it was probably controversial at the time it was released.

Turns out music did not in fact die on the day of his death.

Fun album, but its not my type of music

I like Buddy Holly's voice but the songs are all a bit samey and old

Basi carine

Really simple and captures the sound of the era

I know this music is super important in a historical sense, but it's just not really for me. I definitely understand why it's on the list. I'll give it 3 stars for its impact but I wouldn't really choose to listen to it on my own.

Most of my 1950s music is jazz, with some blues thrown in. I'm not very knowledgeable about the rock canon, and I guess the closest albums I am familiar with would be Elvis Presley's first two or Bo Diddley's early stuff. Even compared to Elvis, this is pretty saccharine stuff. Like some of the other records in the 1001 list, I can appreciate the historical influence and importance without being personally enthralled. 12 tracks in 25 mins is impressive, and a reminder that concision is normally a virtue.

Probably ruined for me by being featured in loads of adverts when I was growing up! Important, catchy, very sad that he died so young.

Production: 7/20 Songwriting: 10/10 Innovation: 6/20 Bangers: 10/20 Emotional response: 12/20 = 45 Perfectly pleasant at times, cloying and annoying at times

It was pretty generic 50s music in my opinion. Not very much stood out to me. It definitely wasn’t bad but it was seemed kind of bland so I don’t have much to say about it. Favorite song: That’ll Be The Day Decent 6/10

Fucking hell. I listened to the first song and couldn't be arsed. I will rate anyway, just for the numbers.

A very enjoyable listen.

not sure about this one, the start of the album just wasnt very good and it got a bit better by the end of the album

Nice. Should listen to it again

Not a ton of substance, but what it lacks there it makes up in fun and tightness.

Inicios de rock. Melodías agradables

Jolly, naive but enjoyable rockvand roll from the 50s

Ray Charles, show these fools how it’s done in the 50’s and 60’s

Not too bad for real oldies.

I've been hearing BH for over 50 years, but I'd never heard the album before.

good, great classic sound and totally enjoyable

Rock viejito de libro, con las famosas Oh Boy! y That'll Be The Day. Además, Rock Me My Baby y I'm Looking For Someone To Love.

Pretty decent

Its an interesting album but personally not my taste.

Doo-Wop white boy shenanigans. Fun music, could dance to a song or two at a party but not my type of album to keep in my library so far

I had no idea Not Fade Away was not a dead original. Clean vocal album not something that I really like but I appreciate it. Good simple music but they seem like an obvious influence on others.

Old timey music. Classic, but so simple

I can see why folks were into it, has a good single

short n sweet good

Very samey. Not bad, but no thing special

3.5 - enjoyed it

Fun album! First side starts off great with "Oh Boy!" and "Not Fade Away". Side 2 picks back up strong with "That'll Be The Day" although perhaps a bit weaker after that.

Old school! Harmony and early rock n roll

I guess I get it. Just a little too dated at this point.

Very old school, but still enjoyable

Giving me “Enchantment Under the Sea” vibes. Lots of old-timey love songs. Catchy but not great.

Pretty much what I expected, not something I would listen to regularly but I understand why it is influential.

A little goofy, but very pleasant and enjoyable to listen to.

Liked it. A bunch of nice, short, pop songs.

Fun stuff, a few of the hits here. The other songs rather typical fare for the times.

Some really good songs, but a hard album to listen through. All the songs see to run into each other.

Good example of the type of music. Probably wouldnt listen again, but it might be worth finding a few favorite songs on the record

alright

catchy stuff, like would happily listen again but can't really judge it cause it's just too old? something like that.

Not sure where I stand on this. Good, bad... indifferent! 5/10 to be safe.

I can smell an Elvis impersonator a mile away and Buddy Holly has to be one of the earliest ones.

Couldn’t get into this one, might need to try sgsin

Good song writing but not my jam

I'm sure this was big in it's time but not music I enjoy.

Struggling to listen to this happy clappy bullshit

This can't be a 1 because they're good at what they do, it's just what they do is really dated and has been surpassed by so much more adventurous and interesting music. Even a fan would have to admit every song is very similar. If you want to listen to a nerd play jangly guitars in a suit and tie and thick rimmed glasses, Elvis Costello is right there, you don't need to back this far. 25 mins long is a positive though, get in and out without mucking around.

I am not a big fan of 50s rock'n'roll, but I tried to come into this album with an open mind, knowing a few Buddy Holly tunes already. I dunno. The songs are okay, but honestly the backing vocals from the Crickets really put a damper on this album. Their too-smooth delivery on a lot of these songs seem to neuter whatever punch I expected to hear. Would probably give it three stars if Holly was the only vocalist, but here we are.

It's very pleasant. I can see the roots of many other artists and styles in this. I prefer my Rock and Roll more upbeat though.

Hyggeligt album. 12-bar blues for alle pengene.

This is pretty much exactly what I think of when I think of 50’s diner music. Listenable but pretty repetitive. 2.5/5.

It was just white dudes singing in doowap. Mid.

These recordings have been playing in the background my entire life. Buddy sure could write a hook. But after sitting down and actually listening, I'm struck by how unimpressive the music actually is. The performances are incredibly rudimentary compared with the country and jazz of the moment. What really strikes me is that, even within rock and roll's "passion over prowess" paradigm, these recordings are less than impressive. Buddy would have had trouble sharing a stage with Elvis. And Elvis' recordings are downright staid compared to what was going on at Vee-Jay and Chess Records at the time. And what I consider the pinnacle of early rock and roll was the debut record, released less than a year after this Chirping, of one James Brown. Please, Please, Please, go listen to that album, then come back to this and try to argue that this captures the passion of early rock and roll. It is in the canon because 90% of radio wouldn't play, and 90% of record stores wouldn't sell James, or Little Richard, or John Lee Hooker, or Jimmy Reed, or Chuck Berry, or Muddy Waters, or Bo Diddley, or Howlin' Wolf in 1957. When I put nostalgia aside, I find very little reason for focusing attention on this bland, amateurish music to the ignorance of the GREAT and truly groundbreaking rock and roll being made at the same time.

Fun for a single song as a throwback to the bubble gum pop era. However, even at only 25 minutes long the album gets a little thin. It feels like the same song and backbeat over and over again with basic pseudo romantic lyrics in the vein of everything else from this era. You could have told me this was Buddy Holly, Big Bopper or basically any of the icons from the 50's rockabilly era and I wouldn't have known the difference nor really cared. I don't have any personal draw to Buddy Holly (beyond the Weezer song), so its just a bunch of outdated bubble gum pop for me. It belongs on the list for its place in music history but I don't have any personal tie to it. Even if its not bad it's easy to quickly move on. 1.91 stars

Ooh-wee-ooh. I still find it hard to believe that The Blue Album never made it onto the list, so I need to immortalise its presence somehow. I've never listened to Buddy Holly before, though in my defence I imagine that's the average use case for those consulting this list. I know very little about his music, though I'm pretty sure he has a lovable loser persona a la Elvis Costello (assuming I didn't just impart that idea from the Weezer song). In any case, I'm glad to hear another true oldie - It's been a while since my last 50s album. Here goes. Nope. It's just a strait-laced rock and roll album. This was a fine listen, even if I did think it was unsubstantial. With 12 songs packed into a 25-minute runtime, much of this album is fleeting and passed me by without much notice. The 50s rock stylings, while competent, are greatly inhibited by how restrictive and samey they are. Even the stuff which did hook me didn't have me around for long. Obviously, it's difficult to listen to this music with the knowledge of how far rock music has come since. Still, I can appreciate this album on cultural grounds. I'm glad to finally know what a Buddy Holly even is. Hey, "That'll Be the Day". I, of course, know of this song because it was covered by the Beatles while they were still the Quarrymen. Definitely the best song of the album. The layabout vocal melody carries the song pretty nicely, and the rockabilly instrumental is fun all the same. A very simple song, but it's effective. I know Buddy Holly is a music icon, so it's no question as to whether he belongs on here. I honestly would have vouched for a second album from him if his career wasn't so short-lived, but as it stands I think one list album is about right. I cosign this inclusion.

Early rock and roll built on clean electric guitars, light drums, upright bass, and bright, hiccuping vocals moves with concise, melodic charm. Listening feels like flipping through a stack of short, catchy radio hits that pass quickly without much variation in semantics as well as its musical potrayal.

Lo escuché mientras me levantaba

crickets is an apt name because that was my reaction. 🦗

4 - BAD

This is just not really my kind of music lol but I guess it was fine?

Only certain doo-woo I love, this wasn't it but I acknowledge it's influence.

Actually pretty listenable but it’s exactly what you’d expect

To an extent it was a reasonably uninspiring listen but on only in the context of what has come since as night in impossible to listen with that subsequent knowledge. Found it got very samey very quickly and was pleased that it was only 25 minutes long as went by at a brisk pace.

I love how it has "chirping" (with quotation marks) on the cover, so that we won't expect that they'll actually chirp but we'll still expect that his band is made of crickets.

Yet another one to file under "appreciate having heard it, and it's decent, but it's obviously not my era or vibe". It makes for a smooth 25 minutes without leaving a particularly noteworthy impression.

Not offensive, but no standout songs. Kinda Elvis y, maybe just the style of music of the time

It’s just so early compared to most of the music I listen to. You have to have some level of respect for it as a precursor, but it’s also a precursor. It’s a step before the things I like get implemented and developed further. Faves: That’ll Be The Day, You’ve Got Love

The old rock n roll stuff just isn’t for me

I like the Umm, Oh Yeah Dearest sound much more than this

Really surprised how underwhelmed I was by this album. Just one track stood out to me and I just wasn't interested in the rest. Felt very derivative and unremarkable for a performer with the mythic reputation of Buddy Holly. Top tracks: That'll Be The Day

the type of music you had to grow up with to truly enjoy, i think. it's fine; can't really fault it so much as it was made pretty much as rock n roll was being invented. it's kind of like listening to sugar hill gang in 2026, after all those amazing 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s hip hop/rap albums that have since been created. like, i think i'll listen to nas on "memory lane" instead of sugar hill gang "rapper's delight." or pretty much any other hop hop song. it's the same with this buddy holly album. i can understand its importance and probably its influence, but it just doesn't work for me at all. the songs pretty much follow the same formula, and by the third song i'm already kind of over it.

I tried. I really did. Not my jam.

This guy looks just like Weezer. Decently fun songs, but I've never really clicked with his stuff. I remember as a kid hearing some people say that Buddy Holly could have been bigger than Elvis if he had lived longer, but part of me wonders if his current level of fame is partly due to his early tragic death. Overall, not bad, but I feel like there are better artists of the genre/ era. At least from what I get with this album.

Oh Boy! is corny and I suspect the whole album will be. Fade away shouldn't have lasted this long. You've Got Love is fine, good even. By Maybe Baby I wanna invent a time machine just so this was never produced. Playing It's Too Late at my best friend's wedding just to feel something. I don't wanna review this anymore, get me out of the mirror dimension or whatever the Bratz meme said.

I get why this is on the list. It's just not very interesting besides its historical relevance. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again

Charming for a bit but a little too anachronistic and twee even for 25 minutes.

Almost impossible to judge through a modern lens. I didn't find this particularly enjoyable, but I suspect that's mostly because of how barebones and rudimentary it sounds to someone who's looked into the Pandora's box that artists such as Buddy Holly opened

RIP Buddy Holly. You were so hot and would have loved blueberry ice Geek Bar. This was a cute little 50's record that is so "hey toots, want to go to the sock hop and share a malt? Careful not to shake your hips too hard!" It's not bad per se but I didn't super love listening to it. It just sounds goofy to my iPhone-era ears unfortch even though I know it's influential. 2/5 because Buddy Holly is hot.

This one is fine, I get why it’s here. The songs are pretty samesy, not a crazy amount of variation. But similar to Elvis and some of the other acts at the time, don’t think I’d choose this over any of them. Two stars

very 50s

Good to hear some older music. There were a few good tracks, although they are probably the better known ones from the album so perhaps that's just familiarity? Some great guitar work on some tracks, in particular I'm Looking for Someone to Love.

I like da weezer song more

Everything has already been said about this.

oooo eeeee i don't like buddy holly

This is an album of it's time. It has that classic 50's sound which I find myself enjoying on occasion. However, an entire album becomes stale pretty quickly. For the most part this is a decent album, but I doubt I'll ever listen to it again. Two stars. (Favorite track: It's Too Late.)

Ok oldies rock album. Not exactly what I would choose to listen to but I found enjoyment out of it. Best track was That'll Be The Day.

It’s a sound from another era that bands like The Sonics smashed to pieces a decade later. Unlike music from the 1960s I find it difficult to summon a fully formed opinion. It’s very formal, prim and proper but does little to engage the senses. Not particularly interesting!

Can really tell this is a pre album era, proto rock, etc. fizzes at the start and then just like, 10 minutes at least of filler.

Some music is so good it transcends time. It will be carried on forever. Played over and over throughout the decades. It was loved the day it came out, and will be loved just the same when mankind first puts footsteps on Mars. This is not that. It is so stuck in the 50's that it hurts. Still fun to go back and listen to it though.

not a fan

So happy these songs are so short, they're so lame. Thankful that music progressed from here.

Inte dåligt men lite trist

Sömnigt, inget som riktigt drar in mig. Lite småkul vibe på sin höjd.

I can respect and admire an artist for their contribution to music as a whole, without needing to worship their actual music right?

I totally get it's influence and popularity, just not for me

May be important, but it's for sure one of the reasons I 'd never listened to popular music as a youth in those days.

Not a huge 50's music guy. Great to learn who the hell Buddy Holly is though. I'm looking for someone to love was my favorite. 2/5.

It's probably not fair to blame Buddy Holly or the Crickets for the fact that this music feels so overdone and cheesy. That's just because it's so old and has become ubiquitous to the point of dilution. Probably really slapped at the time.

Buddy got a one track mind. All he can think about is that sweet sweeet lovin. If he’s not out cruising (looking for someone to love as he would phrase it) he wants to be sent lewd pictures. I mean, look at those pervy glasses.

So clean. Can’t get much out of this, it’s so dated. 2.5/5

Fine enough. But not Buddy Holly's best.

Middle of the road, it's fine but nothing special. 2/5 stars

I understand it's unfair to judge artists from the 50s with modern sensitivities, but to me this album sounds like shallow hits about love all just engineered to be commercial hit with very little under the surface. While I realize Buddy Holly had a massive influence on rock music, I feel like other artists were doing much more interesting things during this time period. 2/5

OLD BRUH

This felt more like a fieldtrip to the Smithsonian than an album of the day experience. I can appreciate the historical relevance of this artifact like I respect, say, Pong; I just wouldn't want to voluntarily spend my free time playing it.

Time has not been kind to this album. Its melodies, hooks, and pop sensibilities are still obvious today, but if it ever sounded like it rocked that has all been lost. This kind of thing happens to most genres, but compare this to Chuck Berry. His songs, with their big guitar riffs, are easy to trace to what we think of as rock now. With this, the lineage is foggier. Still, it's a fun listen, and while it sounds quaint musically the themes still resonate today. "Not Fade Away" has a good rhythm and "That'll Be the Day" swings. There's a bit of doo wop on this too, which also makes it feel closer to pop. Which is probably the way to appreciate it, but there's not quite enough variety for it to feel essential as a pop album either.

Sounds exactly how you would picture these folks doing music. You what you see.

Now I know what it's like to feel just like buddy holly. Ooo wee ooo I guess

Best song that’ll be the day. The Crickets sounded like laurel and hardy with stan laurel singing lonesome pine.

Yes, that was boring and repetitive. The lyrics are a little, well, one dimensional!? Fav: That‘ll be the way

Hard to assess nearly 70 years of musical development later, but he has a nice voice with a little grit to it. Fun to play guitar to. I liked the Weezer reference

Saccharine Americana. Great for the historical context, but not much else.

It’s still such a dated sound but at least I could actually get through this one

A little bit corny, not sure if i’d listen to this in public.

This shit is OLD! So automatically in a musical sense it’s a little too old for me, but I’m so surprised how some of these songs still manage to be relatable. Guess some things never change, heartbreak will always suck. Still decent, very cool to hear in the context of how music has changed, probably wont ever listen again!!

I know this is influential but I honestly didn't enjoy it. Points for being only 25 minutes long. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing

The sounds of 1950s rock and roll don't appeal to me very much, but I do appreciate the way these tracks were mixed. Everything is very clear and spaced out. The guitar tone is clean, and the drums are tucked back as to not overpower the vocals. The harmonies are clear and easy to pick out, which I also really appreciate. This is the kind of sound that my grandfather really loved so as I have been listening to these tracks, I was reminiscing and wondering whether he ever listened to this album. It does teleport you to milkshakes and drive-ins and letterman jackets. I feel like I am in a parking lot at night, illuminated by neon signs. It is incredibly short for having 12 songs. "An Empty Cup" may be my favorite track from the album, followed by "Send Me Some Lovin'". I was less interested in the more upbeat songs and prefer the slower second half.

This is “hot dog, hot diggity dog” ass music. Not Fade Away! It’s great that these guys are so inspired by Grateful Dead. A lot of folks say Buddy Hollys death was the day the music died. It’s wild to think this album is the Rosetta Stone that led to “LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR! LET THE BODIES HIT THE FLOOR!” This is the kind of music that’s playing when you buy a dame a Coke at the soda shop. This is music from when apple pie was an acceptable dinner. Tho is the type of song that plays during the grizzliest murder of a Tarantino film. I think this sounds so boring because the entire era of rock music was derived from this, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard. The Beatles made their fame doing their music. This feels like one of those albums where I need an oral history of how all these rock n roll guys borrowed and competed with each other. I respect the hell out of this for being some of Jack Rabbits Slims’ finest songs.

I could do with out the doo doos and bop bops but more listenable than I would expect. some recognizable songs and guitar riffs. a bit bubblegum for a jaded genx like me

It can be a challenge to back to the Foundational Texts of any art—music, film, books, etc.—because what followed in their wake is always more interesting. Even keeping in mind Buddy Holly's legacy and the context of this album's release, I found it tedious. Maybe it's due to the thematic repetition (love lost, love gained, love underappreciated, etc.), but these 25 minutes felt much longer to me.

I had a similar problem with this that I did with the ELO album. Every song sounded the same, I was ready for it to be over and it’s less than half an hour long.

Simple and formulaic music, pure packaged product to satisfy the masses. No innovation whatsoever - the significance importance of this band isn't in its music, but in its architecture as a "band that writes its own music". I appreciate that, but that can't be worth more than one star Performance-wise it's good, but the music just makes it a slog. Even for a relatively short album, I got tired of the formula halfway through. The last song fortunately pick up the energy a bit as a payoff for the listen.

This reminded me of working at Goodwill and Wednesdays would be senior Wednesdays where senior citizens could get a discount that day. They’d play a segregated sock hop radio that consisted of the same 50 songs every Wednesday and sometimes they’d loop if you worked long enough of a shift. One or two Little Richard songs would be my breath of relief. That being said, at least three songs from this album were a part of that playlist and therefore I cannot objectively rate this without the bias of retail trauma.

The songs were fine, but largely unmemorable. I think I might be too young to appreciate music from this era, but I still thought that artists like fats domino and muddy waters had much more soul and musical talent, whereas this just seems boring in comparison.

I do not have much to say about this one. It was alright, very 1950's which is like exactly when it dropped, so sure! I would expect the hear these tracks in something like the Irishman. I didn't really have a favorite track, but ig if you twisted my arm I'd say I'm Lookin' For Someone To Love.

Lwk no idea why this website keeps giving me the most cowboy ahh albums like chill out there boy

Puh, ganz schön oll. So rockabillymäßig… „Rock me my Baby“ ist aber noch ganz annehmbar.

This style of music is easy to listen to, but has been used in so many horror movies that it has an eerie feeling these days. It's kind of torturous.

Wasn’t really interested didn’t even make it through

A fun listen, but felt like repetitive and surprisingly lewd (relative to the 50-60s) love songs. Not much special with lyrics, instrumentals were decent.

Didn’t like this very much. Very samey all the way through. Not offensive to the ears but I did get bored multiple times. Saved a few tracks to try again some day though

No es mi estilo

Old timey

#106/1001. 12 songs, 26 minutes. Is this the Ramones? Well, at least makes me understand the Ramones better. Glad to hear more stuff from the 50s, but where is Little Richard and Chuck Berry? I guess coming up later. This is quite a polished version of the raw power which was out there at that time.

Fine Bland Fine

Not to my taste

Not my style at all.

Cheerful and nice. Not much to say.

Pleasant enough. Classic for certain, but I'd have to be in the mood for it

I tried

not bad.

Joa is okay, aber nicht so meins

Nothing crazy, a little boring.

I just don’t like 50’s music (besides Sinatra) although this isn’t too bad.

Pretty cool if you want to feel like you have been transported back in time for half an hour but I didn’t really connect on a musical level.

Meh. It’s ok. History and all.

Oo-ee-oo this sounds just like Buddy Holy

Another album that, while not painful to listen to, fails to capture my interest.

Twas ok

I'm sure it's been relevant at some point in history

nice if that's your thing

Gosh, music has evolved in the last 70 years. I found this to be a bit too simplistic and the songs all look alike, nothing like the amazing jazz coming from this era. The songs sounded very alike and I thought is wasn't very interesting.

Very much showing its age; probably a 5/5 when it came out but for me today, 2/5

Super meloso otra vez.

Type of early rock that sounds the same as all other early rock albums.

That'll be the day is a tune but otherwise sounds dated for me. 2.5

*Classic Buddy Holly *Fun listen, but wouldn’t listen again unless it happened to be on. RATING - 6/10

1. Oh Boy! - 10 Great song with a great sound and even better lyrics. Really good song that you can't help but vibe and swing with. Just a masterpiece. 2. Not Fade Away - 2 Complete difference from the first track. The instruments unnecessarily pause between each line of the verse, are way too repetitive, and the background vocals are completely soulless. 3. You've Got Love - 1 Horrible bubblegum music. 4. Maybe Baby - 6 A better song than the previous too. Much better flow with the instruments and vocals with a decent chorus and verses. The verses are pretty short and there's not a lot to the song outside of them but it's not terrible either. 5. It's Too Late - 5 You're average love song about a girl upping and leaving a relationship and the sequential missing of that girl. Decent overall but it hasn't stood the test of time. 6. Tell Me How - 6 Instrumentally a decent song and you get a better glimpse at the vocal range and talent of Buddy Holly on this track. Ending is a bit weak. 7. That'll Be The Day - 8 Solid track. Instrumentally it's a lot stronger than the wishy-washy love songs that dominate a lot of the album. The background vocals add a lot of texture to the choruses. 8. I'm Looking For Someone To Love - 7 Good track. Guitar sounds great on this. Having previously gotten Elvis Presley's debut album, you definitely get the same vibe from this track. 9. An Empty Cup (And A Broken Date) - 1 Background vocals have way much more of a part on this track but it just feels out of place. Sometimes they lead the song, sometimes they don't, and sometimes the instrumentals drown them out. Lyrically the song is toothless.. It's a return to really bad bubblegum music. 10. Send Me Some Lovin' - 2 I'm not one for barbershop quartets and this exactly what the song sounds like. Way too much from the background vocals going on in this song, especially for how muted the instrumentals are at times. 11. Last Night - 2 The lyrics sound as if they're almost sung out of key and out of tempo with the instrumentals. Song starts with what is almost a prayer into another "miss you baby blue" style track. Nothing about it works. 12. Rock Me My Baby - 6 The drums so a lot of work for this song and they sound excellent. This is was more the swing type of rock and roll we've come to appreciate from the era. The final minute of the song is way better than the opening minute. Average Rating: 4.67 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 2.34 Rounded Down: 2 Stars

Maybe I'm a no-nothing killjoy but this isn't doing anything for me it's just some fun sounds for kids. Idk im sure he was doing something cool at the time but I've never had strong feelings on Buddy Holly's Big Hitters so a full comp is like. Alright.

buddy holly

This was so old fashioned I was honestly kind of bored by it. The songs are okay, but they all sound very similar to each other and aren't very sophisticated. I understand that's because it's the dawn of rock n roll, but l'm not judging it on historical significance.

All love songs. One note throughout the album. Well done and talented. Great for the time period but not impactful now.

This was short. I’ll give it that.

Favoriten

Don't really like his voice, VERY standard 12 bar blues stuff but also exactly what I expected

super interesting album, not up my street but I did enjoy my time listening to it

Hard to rate older albums sometimes but this one didn’t land. Just ok.

Wasn’t for me. Okay for background noise, but I wouldn’t really want to actively listen to this.

While it was probably groundbreaking at the time, this just seems to be one of those formative works that feels completely toothless and uninteresting to a modern listener. Some good, cute songs on here, but that's about all I can say.

Too many sappy lyrics, too much talk of love, no edge. Way too much ooh-ing and ahh-ing. Very simple melodies. No idea why Buddy Holly was so influential.

If I were a woman these fellows would be yearning for, I'd think they're obsessed. Hackneyed love songs through and through. Only redeeming factor is that it is undeniably catchy.

Historically important. A few very recognizable songs. But man, is this ever dated and corny.

First time willingly listening to Buddy Holly at all, can definitely understand how women from the 50s would go crazy over him. I think it's perfectly fine and representative of the time, and I can definitely hear the influences. I'd put it on this list for sure, it's a classic, however not sure if I'd ever listen to this again.

Oof. That's old.

I imagine this album helped shape the Rock & Roll genre. I thought it was okay. Most of the songs had a similar sound, and it didn't feel like there was a standout track. Favourite Track(s): Rack Me My Baby Least Favourite Track(s): Not Fade Away

Ok..but dated

Dude really does have a great voice it’s a shame he lived in this “hoowee mama do ya like my pajamas” ass era of music

Like an old friend that you almost forgot about. You can hear the massive influence of elvis here. Buddy was moving away from pure country and into rock and roll. This album is full of classics. 4/5 for history alone. I’m not a lover of this era of two minute/3 chord staples. The Beatles show up soon and start to mix it up

Echt rock n roll. Dat is lekker. Maar ik ben blij dat Little Richard, Elvis en later the Beatles de rock n roll een beetje spice hebben gegeven. 6,5/10 Highlights Oh Boy That'll be the Day

Very aged. Keep saying this about music but this genuinely is the oldest music i have reviewed so far. It still sounds nice but i appreciate a lot of songs from the same time more than this album. Its fine but low probability that i will listen to this again. 2,5/5

Nice little album. Songs very short and whimsical. You can hear the 50s in the sound, but also hear some influences it would pass on to later music. Honestly, it didn't really hold me or seem very memorable, but it was fine for what it is. Overall: 2.5/5

This would have been my jam if I’d been born in 1941, but it’s 2025, and I’ve heard it done better by many other people, so it’s just a bit boring.

Find a new beat my god 😭

Extremely basic and extremely outdated. It's not bad by any means, but music has evolved so much past this. Compared to the options we have right now, this is just underwhelming. But it's very short, so that's nice, I guess. 5/10

A piece of rock and roll history that I'm glad I listened to, but also glad it's over. It's clear the influence the Buddy Holly had, and who knows how much more he could have accomplished if he didn't die at 22. That being said, this album was booooring. 1950s rock just doesn't do it for me.

One of my many great shames as a Texan, is that I can only name two Buddy Holly songs, and both of them happen to be on this album. I listened to a fair amount of oldies when I was growing up in the late eighties and early nineties, but I don't really remember hearing much of Buddy's music. I'm looking forward to fixing that blindspot today! Well, maybe calling my unfamiliarity with Buddy Holly a 'great shame' was a bit of an overreaction. I understand the cultural and historical significance of this album, but listening to it has been one of the weakest lessons I've ever received in music history. There were only three songs that I thought were noteworthy: "Not Fade Away," "That'll Be The Day," and "Rock Me My Baby." Buddy Holly and his band were at their best and most unique on those songs. Buddy Holly's singing on those songs brought a '50's rock and roll touch to his Texas timbre, and the guitar playing was really solid on those songs as well. The rest of the album felt like typical late '50's fare: sappy guitar songs that felt closer to the pop music of the time, and not really in the same ballpark as rock and roll music. One more upside of this album was that it was short, which I really appreciated since this album fell on the boring side of things for me. It's nice to check this album off the list, but it's definitely not something I'd go back to.

Not my kinda songs. I enjoyed some of the guitar playing. After the album finished Little Richard started playing and that got me excited haha. (27 known/58 new)

Not into the doo wop type beat. 2/5 for me.

Am I the only person, probably because I'm insane, who can't hear this music outside of the context of black people getting harassed in the background? No matter how fun this music might sound, I can't not picture that. Anyways, these are some solid tunes.

This was pretty good. Short and sounded like it was recorded on a tin can, but overall no complaints.

[4/10] To think this used to pass as the devil’s music

Boooring

Nowadays mainly cheesy

First listen.

Waiting for an album I have not heard.

My grandfather hated buddy holly, I don’t know why. Anyway the hits are ok everything else feels like filler

The best thing about this is the guitars on the cover.

5/10 Like I get this was important at the time. But it’s just the gentrification of blues and rockabilly without the appeal of other artists. Buddy Holly has always kinda been my least fav of this era and this record feels kinda empty because of that. The Dead did pick a couple covers from this one that were staples but they actually added the blues and some soul to them in a way not seen here. Favorite Song: Not Fade Away

60s weak shit. Couple of songs that play later when bands who are good can handle the lyrics

Another one that reminds me of my aged care job, these are ‘golden oldies’ and I respect that, even if I don’t find them particularly riveting. Simple but sweet subject matter (love) set to simple but sweet melodies (two or three chords). Also, silly thing to say perhaps but I like that a lot of these older albums are under half an hour. I’m a big advocate for the 90-minute movie and now I’m gonna do the same for the 30-minute album. This is not one I’ll revisit though.

Not for me. This 50s/60s style, harmonic, syrupy rock n roll just isn't my style. Appreciate it for what it is but not my jam.

No high expectations here but it was not bad to listen. Really hard to find a mood where I'd like to play this music. 2.5

The Good: Chirping crickets… the soothing sounds of a mid-summer-night The Bad: who’d wanna listen to an album sung by insects? The Ugly: 12 songs crammed into a 26 minute album… Guess the producers understood that one doesn’t want to. listen to chirping crickets too long, so they made all the songs nice and short… I know that Buddy Holly is revered in the Rock ’n Roll world of the ‘50s, but I can’t but wonder if this is out of respect for his untimely death? If the man never hopped on that flight, and would have kept chirping with the crickets, would we all still be applauding him? For me, and I really like me some rock and roll, I would rather listen to Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, or the great Fats Domino, instead of this… On a positive note, I’ve been humming the Weezer song all day! Ooh-wee-ooh, I look just like Buddy Holly… 2*

Im not that big of this album. Not a fan of the instrumental going on but it still has a nice groove.

This album was okay because the beat was catchy. I do not enjoy this style of music.

the first song was buns I don like it the second song started off uhm weird don got much to say the last song is so bad bro like its buns like its so bad I don't like it at all

I don't like the idea of music being deemed obsolete, but if there was ever an example this may be it. I like Buddy, but this sounds too simplistic to me (70 years later).

Foundational but Elvis did it with more gusto before him. Did not know Not Fade Away was written by Buddy.

Short, and it has some good songs, but overall really boring.

I’d like to think that even in 1957 I would have found this corny as hell

OK definitely not my favorite style of music. It all sounds the same. But! Buddy Holly was a really good guitarist. I enjoyed the main single from this, "That'll Be The Day" and "Oh, Boy!" was good too, but the rest sounds fairly vanilla and boring. I appreciate the music for the time. Is it an album you must hear before you die? Sure, but it wouldn't be awful if you didn't. 2/5

It's exactly what you'd think music from the 1950's would sound like. Buddy Holly does have a very nice voice, I must admit. Of course this was probably influential in the development of rock and roll, but it's nothing more than a historical artifact. An album from a very specific point in time. A comforting sound from a time gone by, but nothing more unless you're a diehard fan of this type of music. The songs are fun to hear once in a while and I'm sure it was better 70 years ago, but there's much more exciting music out now. Thankfully it was under half an hour.

I was led to believe by Michael J Fox that Buddy Holly riipppeeeeddd. He certainly does not on Chriping Crickets. As usual anything pre-Beatles may as well be from another planet. The background vocals on here are laughably dated. But respect to some of the creators of rock and roll… looking forward to hearing prove of that 4.1/10

A lot of hits on this album but too reminiscent of my parents

Rock an roll da década de 50. Lembra muito os beatles no início.

Mercifully this was a very short record. I get it, this is part of the origin and development of rock & roll. But I'm not amused how inoffensive and repressively euphemistic the act was. Thanks Elvis for moving things along.

Exactamente lo que pensé que era. Rock genérico de la época. Zzz zzz Nota: 1.9

The best thing about this album is that it made me appreciate how far music has come since.

It may be influential and important but that doesn't make it good. 1.8
