Reviews (page 16 of 16)

When The Good Place took a stab at Red Hot Chili Peppers indicating that fandom of this band was a ticket to "The Bad Place" I had one of those moments where I looked around and mouthed "Me?" while pointing at myself. Honestly on this album I think I understand that jab a bit more than when it comes to Stadium Arcadium (an album I'll defend with my dying breath). Nonetheless, Californication and a few other songs are indisputably good jams. His rock rap just threw me a bit at times.

This one is a total burner and will go in my permanent rotation.

An instant 5 for me. Not my favorite RHCP album overall but it has some absolute classics and the whole album is solid.

Californication is a bona fide Chili Peppers classic.

Enjoyable upbeat album. RHCP isn't my favorite but this is their best work I think. I don't know if it's fair for me to ding it for being overplayed but it's my ratings and I will do what I want.

Favourite RHCP album.

Awesome stuff

Not sure I've heard the whole album before so didn't know that the chili's were so varied in style, still liked the classic 'californication' type ones the best.

Dude great album.

I knew some RHCP songs before this album, but I'd never listened to a full album before. I didn't really get it. Started this album thinking it would be a 3 and moved it to a 4 after repeated listens. It's a very masculine album that embodies the so cal attitude. It's an album made for roadtripping, playing video games with the guys, and just hanging out in the summer. It accomplishes a lot without seeming to try very hard. I respect it for that. four stars well-earned.

More melodic than I remembered

Prefer their hit songs

I think this album is probably better than Blood Sugar Sex Magic. Well rounded, rockers and cruisy vibes, but it all flows.

Liked their style…..good tunes

tied for second best album by the ole chili peppers. road trippin and purple stain are the unsung heroes of the album

lots of bangers, most of them I already knew

Fantastic mix of upbeat rock and more composed songwriting. Californication and Scar Tissue are obvious favorites but them and the rest of the first half make the second half pale a bit in comparison, so I rounded this 4.5 down to a 4. Saved: Around the World, Scar Tissue, Californication Easily, Road Trippin'

Saved Prior: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication Saved Off Rip: Parallel Universe Cutting Edge: Easily Overall Notes: Other than the three songs I knew already, the other songs kinda sounded the same. I wasn't able to devote full attention to the album so maybe I just wasn't listening close enough, but nothing especially stood out in a positive way. Will probably come back to this one.

Their best album. All downhill from here.

my second favourite chili peppers album even though its mastered way too loud.

This is likely a 4, but let's listen to the whole thing. I generally like the sound... Lots of familiar songs, but not ones that I love -- it is soul-searching, and that kind of overshadows the good funky sound that I like. It would really be like a 3.5, so I'll go ahead with 4/5.

Funk rock cross over. Best Tracks: Around the World, Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue.

.... not going to pretend to do an unbiased review.

Paso. Tengo el disco, eran fan en 3ro de secundaria. Creo que la de Californication y la de Road Trippin son las únicas que volvería escuchar.

Good album, can't believe its 22 years old!

Good album.

Pretty darn good. 4RS

Another deep drag of nostalgia and a trip down memory lane. I think no matter what decade this would be released in it would still be a great album. I prefer Californiacation to the later stadium Arcadium album and I would go so far as to say this is RHCP best collection of music.

this being a newer album....looks, 1999 WHAT THE FUDGE! Love me RHCP - I saw them in concert with Tammy in 2018. I give this album four argyle socks

I don’t love all of it but this is still a top chili peppers album for me.

Solid 4. Lots of good songs that I would enjoy if they came on, but not much I would seek out on their own

Fun and familiar. Always love the bass

Loved Scar tissue, The Other Side, Get On Top. They are so comfortable switching from rock to ballad to rap to pop. Very talented band and when they lost a member the replacement filled the big shoes so seamlessly. “Get On Top” was a look at how versatile they were with a rendition of a Rap Rock song in the early years of rap. Well done gentlemen. Keep these amazing artist coming. I was ready to jump ship last week this week

This is a strong Chilli Peppers albums - really liked it. The hits are good, and it was fun to hear the lesser known cuts - especially “Get on Top”. Another Rick Rubin success, and having John Fruscienti back didn’t hurt either. 4.5 stars and rounding up. Good+

With the instrumentalists' interplay at an all-time telepathic high and Kiedis peaking as a vocalist, Californication is a bona fide Chili Peppers classic.

Un classic!

Great album overall but has some weaker tracks. 8

Liked it! Fell off a bit at the end but still gets an 8

weird album. some absolute unforgettable slaps like otherside, californication and parallel universe but some really weird songs that dont work at all like around the world and get on top

Yesterday I worked on updating the interior framing schedule, pulling details over from Train A and developing a detail at the stair door intersection. What cant be said about this album... I was probably more motivated by this album then any other ive listened to thus far. My top song was Around the World although I could probably listen to any song on this album no problem.

Annoying.

Pretty dull really. Should be a 2.5. Plumping for a very generous 3 mainly on thee grounds of the singles on the album. The rest not so good.

Low 8 overall. The first half was great, even if the songs sounded kind of similar. But the second half was a lot weaker, and there wasn't even really a strong ending. Should have probably been shorter.

Just haven’t evolved. Blood sugar sex magic is a 5*

I wasn’t always a pepper head but on one of our road trips my wife and I listened to almost all of their albums as we traveled through Utah and Arizona and I was converted. It was the perfect soundtrack and this album was one of those so it always brings me back to Sedona and the beautiful landscapes and cruising down the highways and byways. This isn’t my favorite pepper album but it is still really good. There is a magical quality to this group, maybe due to the drugs or the skills but their songs are so unique and unlike anything else. They were never afraid to go crazy. My favs are Around the World, Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue, Otherside, Get On Top, Californication, Porcelain, and I Like Dirt. The album cover is iconic and always makes me want to sit by the pool, though idk if I’d swim in it if that was the color.

Imprescindible para comenzar el siglo XXI. Rock and roll comercial + un poco de fusión + mucho postureo = un clásico

It’s got classics but a lot of it is mediocre or annoying. 8

hell yeah

Tried to listen whilst puppy sitting and being kept awake. But that was already stressful and then the music seemed to be stress me more and I had to seek more calming music. So not a fair assessment really. I'll give them a whirl another time....

Nice album, shame that Rick Rubin clipped it to hell and back.

Iconic sound of 90s alt-rock. Really enjoyed!

La canción final ("Road Trippin'") me parece muy de despedida, ad hoc, y "Get on Top" me recuerda a "Give It Away", como same energy. En fin, que los RHCP lo que hacen, lo hacen muy bien y este es un disco muy buenazo. 9.5/10

I'm really disappointed that this is on the list. This is Chili Peppers album that made walk away from them. This album has no soul. Not that the band is particularly deep, it just feels like generic, SoCal rock and it makes me sad.

So many great songs that I forget are on this album. Makes me want to see them live. Fades in the second half... If I could do half stars, this is 4.5

Playful and rhythmic, this bass guitar heavy album feels like the backdrop for a summer day playing beach volleyball on the Pacific or a sweaty dance floor at a rock club. With some of the most catchy tunes every to hit the radio, the diversity of vocal tones and lyrical themes (of resistance and freedom) complete the prescription of joy and release that cause so many embrace the entire album.

Absolute Jam

El arranque es genial: Around the World, Parallel Universe, Scar Tissue Otherside y luego Californication. Gran cierre a los 90 por porte de RHCP.

Awful... just awful. It was so hard to pick a favorite on this one... Most of the songs have been in constant radio rotation since 1999, but I tried listening to the rest with an open mind. I ended up just picking the shortest song as my favorite. I really didn't like this album.

I knew some of these but had never listened to the whole album

Emoji Monday: 🌶🍃💆🍃

The first album I've been given that I've heard of before (even if I've never listened to it the whole way through). The title track is as good as it's ever been, and the whole album mostly succeeds in keeping the atmosphere alive. I think it drags a little bit toward the end and if somebody told me this was their favorite album ever, I'd look at them sideways. With that said, it's definitely a good album with a few standouts, it's just not exceptional.

Play that funky music, white boys? RHCP is an American heritage band at this point, a staple. C'mon, you've got a bassist named Flea, a drummer that looks like Will Ferrell, what more do you want? I've encountered people in life who say the only music they like is RHCP, which is mystifying. But these guys are pretty great. Plenty of hits on here, and it's produced by the legend Rick Rubin! Part of the bassline on "Around the World" sounds indebted to Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon," I liked that. I liked a lot of this album, it's great. Maybe not super red hot, but there's plenty of chili peppers to go around. Favorite songs: Around the World, Scar Tissue, Road Trippin', Otherside. Album art: I'd say this is iconic. I've seen it a million times over, but today for the first time I'm noticing the swap of the water and the sky, that's crazy. I guess I always thought the background was the ocean. Very cool picture, Pepps. 4/5

Ok. Not bad, but not my favorite. Bass is pretty badass.

Buenardo

This was the turning point of RHCP before they went rather downhill. This still had the cool classic funk elements

vecchia conoscenza... sempre particolare

Reminds me of high school

YES! what can i say about this album, except it was a part of my musical life, and still is, damn near a perfect album.

SO many hits on this album. I may have burned myself out on a lot of them at this point but I won't knock the album down for that.

The beginning actually reminds me a little bit of the Kidrock album from last week. I guess that was a sound for that time period. I like the rest of the album (after the first track) better, though I still wouldn’t buy the album.

Sweet sweet sounds

I miss the Mother's Milk era Peppers. This album just reminds me why

Fav song: Californication

Another one I already know well. This band has always been about the bass guitar for me. Obviously the other stuff too whatever lol

For some reason this album really makes me laugh. I want to hate it but I really just can't, its as fun as it is stupid. I wouldn't necessarily call this butt-rock since its just a slight peg up, making this taint-rock. The first song and "get on top" really reminds me of this https://youtu.be/LYjqm9HIGtQ. This album feels like how the band members look, greasy, kind of overtly sexual in a gross kind of way. Maybe I can't shake the fact that this music was made by pedophiles and rapists but I don't feel clean listening to it, even though the music really is pretty fun and kind of hilarious. I did get really tired of the singing after about halfway through the album though, he really does sound the exact same on almost every song. But the album picks up again in the last bit with some unique songs. Still, part of me can't totally get into these songs because they almost sound like a parody of something else with how played-up and samey they are. Overall, the album was good but there are a lot of things that put me off. Favorite track: Right on Time Least Favorite track: Otherside

Listened to this album a ton when I was younger, loved it then, not as much into it now.

rhcp were never really my thing

Not a fan! Not even worth listening to! The Red Hot Chili Peppers suck!

Not my jam. Their earlier work has inspired me more.

Modern classic. This album hit hard when it came out, and has stuck around.

Better than I remembered.

What’s up with the lame white boy rapping over rock? They stink. But I suppose it’s not a horribly produced album, and creatively it’s got some merit. And people really like it. So 3 starts.

Never been a big fan

something about the red hot chilli peppers is that in almost all their songs something seems … off, but they’re just still so good and I keep coming back to them over and over <3

I was not initially a fan of this album when it came out but it grew on me. All these years later it really holds up!

Go on. Dream of it.

Nostalgi redux

I mean... yes, this is good

Packed with hits. Too good to ignore

Kinda nice, some singles stand out, more of a 3,5/5

Amazing 5 singles, some of the best RHCP ever made. The rest of the album is fine, nothing very memorable outside of those hits, but everything kinda just fits together.

2.5 rounded up for the sheer amount of singles and Road Tripping. IDK how I ever loved this band. Lyrics are yikes and production is bad (no dynamic range).

Never liked it

listened to about half, its the chili peppers. cant go wrong

A classic album and always a fun time

Snazzy bass!

Talk about an album that fizzles... The first half is pure fire, but the last half lingers way too long. Still a great rock album.

One of my favorite bands, anything with John Frusciante is great!

Classic. Was my favorite when I was a teenager.

ding deng dong deng dong dong

I just can't get on board with RHCP. Yes their singles are bangers but it's all the same to me, slappadabass, some fast rapsinging then a bit of slow singing and repeat. I also just don't like his voice. I don't think they are bad but just not what I want from life.

Can't hate these Chili Peps, it's not a crazy-win for me, but an enjoyable listen especially those base-lines. Not as goofy as I remember them being, and with some iconic tracks. All of it sounds similar to me, but not in a terrible way. I will say that Californication itself is overplayed and not my fave song in the world.

Pure nostalgia. One of the first albums I would listen to on repeat on my CD Walkman in the car.

9.5/10 One of my favourites. Californication >>> And that's not even covering scar tissue, otherside, etc All the riffs

Their best album! Awesome. Scar tissue is a top song! John F. is one of the best guitarists ever.

Not a fan

A mixed bag of an album, the singles are fantastic but some of the album are incredibly cringey. Took me back to being a teenager and watching Kerrang! TV though.

First half was much better than the second half.

Not a fan.

Good songs ruined by poor vocals.

Total classic. Love this album. Haven't listened to it top to bottom for a while though.

It was okay.

That was hip! I looooove Flea's sound

Easy listen, better in concert. Not many occasions where I am in the mood for this.

Tempted to give a 5 but I’m the end I did find getting to the end of the album a bit of a drag. Interesting to read that it was Frusciante’s return (from skag) that have the band the more mellow and melodic edge. Did not know it was their 7th album and I would have guessed earlier than 99. The biggest surprise though? Kiedis and Mel C! 😮

I never give the peppers enough credit, their shit slaps

Awesome album!

One of my favs

Man some really killer songs, classics even, but I think some of the deeper cuts are just kinda meh. Great stuff tho.

Great album

In my collection. Fantastic album with many standout tracks and a great overall sound to it.

My first RHCP album, so my rating might be a bit biased. Still enjoy listening to this one every now and then. Gotta love the beautiful guitar and bass going on. Extra funky, then extra soulful.

Strong Start First Quarter is good First Half is good 3/4 Through is good All good. Very good album, I like.

Great album with lots of variety. Full of high energy and quirky rhythms.

Two radio hits don't make up for a long list of tired sounds.

Time slows down listening to this

Top, muito bom!

It's been a hot minute since I last listened to this record and... Well, I don't know that it's aged all that well, to be honest. I really liked Californication when it came out so I was surprised to find that I didn't feel the same this time. Turns out, while the music is fun, most of these lyrics are really dumb. Like... Really stupid. On top of that, aside from the hits that everyone knows, the majority of the tracks are really dated sounding. I expected to give this a five-star review. Sadly, it only gets a 3. The years take their toll on everything.

I soured on RHCP awhile back for no real reason, and upon revisiting this album, I feel like I was both right and wrong. The hits are still solid, but most of the deeper cuts leave a lot to be desired. It's really hard to listen to Anthony Kiedis slur his words for an hour. Best track: Easily

Pure Chili Peppers. Nearly every song is a hit. Flea is an absolute mammoth, Fruscinte is amazing, and even Keidis is great minus his weird white-boy rapping. Chad Smith's snare is god tier. Favorite tracks: "Parallel Universe", "I Like Dirt", "Californication"

I really enjoyed this album. My knowledge of RHCP was fairly limited, knowing some of the bigger hits including the lead track “Californication” and it’s video. This was a good opportunity to explore the band’s music to more depth- and hear the more spiritual and melodic sound which critics spoke of.

Nice to recognize a couple of songs. It was a pretty good album. 3.5?

Decent - a little long for me. Very 90s feeling.

1/18 Great Rock album. Standout Tracks: Scar Tissue, Otherside, Californication, Emit Remmus, Road Trippin’

Only RHCP album I like

i think ive unconsciously grew up listening to these songs bc of ninong ewang. like a lot are familiar even tho i haven't intentionally listened to them before this (aside from the famous ones ofc).

This is the soundtrack to going to a house party hosted by a friend of a friend of a friend who just wants to put on some background music that "everyone likes". It has 2 billion plays on Spotify overall, and you know at least half of those plays happened in a VW Golf with a road bike on the roof racks, while the driver sat there in lycra drinking a long black. 2/5 - I'd give it 1 just for being so fucking safe, but truth is it IS kinda catchy. I hate myself for saying that.

Close to a 3/5... just a few too many fillers
