Californication

Why are you doing this to me on a Monday? Isn't Monday bad enough already without Chili Peppers. I'd watched a doc about Woodstock II on Sunday too, so my already negative feelings about RHCP are at an all time low. The bass is ok on 'Scar Tissue', most of the rest of the time, Flea plays too much. Kiedis should not be allowed anywhere near a microphone. Sample lyric: "Ding ding, deng dong, deng ding."

I think everyone has heard this. This was probably the last album of theirs I truly enjoyed. Full of great songs.

First time of listening to whole album. Enjoyed but not a convert.

I've always had mixed feelings about the Chili Peppers. I feel like I should like them more than I do, but I find it difficult to care about them at all. I feel the same way about he Eagles - like the the whole is less than the sum of its parts. Like, Anthony is a great front man, Flea's amazing, John (and Navarro before him) are solid rock guitarists - but, still, I get bored listening to them after a while. All that to say, this album is probably their best and deserving of being on the list. Unique, recognizable sound that's solidly executed. Put any one of these songs on and I'm rocking out right along with them. Put 2 or more on in a row and I'll zone out.

I love Blood Sugar Sex Magik and even some moments on One Hot Minute but this just sounds like laztly garbage in comparison. I thought so at the time it came out, even stand out track Scar Tissue sounds by the numbers

Red Hot Chili Peppers were one of the bands I loved as I grew up - and I remember eaglery waiting for this album to be released after about four years since 'One Hot Minute' (and eight since 'Blood Sugar Sex Magik'). Well, I hadn't warmed up to it immediately, but over time grew to like it - with some classic songs in there - among their most popular ever released. Given their earlier albums were the ones I loved, this ushered the era of the Peppers that weren't any longer the ones I loved, despite the return of John Frusciante. 'Scar Tissue', 'Californication', 'Other Side' were great hits, but I kind of prefer some of the in-betweeners like 'Parallel Universe', 'Porcelain', 'Road Tripping' and 'Easily'. However, one of the things that I increasingly find jarring in RHCP, the older I grow, is that Kiedis sounds locked into a permanent puberty, even though on this album, like its predecessor, he matured somewhat. Anyway, it's a good album, one of the best the band released, although not my favourite.

What a wonderful album! Haven't heard RHCP in a while, so this was fun. Fave tracks are the title track, "Porcelain," "Scar Tissue," "Purple Stain," "Savior," and "Road Trippin'".

Like a lot of music, I'm late to RHCP party. Really enjoyed the funk/rock fusion, and added.

Cet album m'a rappelé le jour où mon professeur de guitare Mathis a voulu m'enseigner la chanson Californication de nos amis les Red Hot. Je n'étais pas du tout d'accord avec cette idée et nous nous bagarrâmes jusqu'à la fin de la leçon ce mercredi-là.

Là on peut discuter, après l'énorme bouse posée par les Red Hot Chili Peppers sur mon bureau il y a quelques semaines de cela, ces derniers ont su se ressaisir en proposant cet album d'une très grande qualité. Cet album semble qui plus est marquer le retour de Robert à la compétition, après une longue convalescence qui l'a tenu éloigné du générateur. Il signe son retour d'un superbe triplé Red Hot - Janet jackson - Radiohead. De très bonne augure pour la suite de la saison.

It's more of the same RHCP you know and love, some good some not. Lots of radio hits here, but deeper cuts like Savior are a really pleasant listen. I'm not a huge fan, but it gets the job done.

RHCP is an awesome band whose songs I listen to regularly. While sometimes their songs cover some heavy topics, I enjoy the easy to listen, chill sound that they have cultivated over the years. Reminds me of the good times of summer. Multiple huge hits on this album although towards the end I am less familiar with some of those songs, they were still great songs on their own.

A great comeback record from the fun funky rock collective RHCP. While there are some flaws like its weaker second half, and occasionally I would call this album too safe for them, it's still a fun time with plenty of great tracks to offer. A perfect time to listen here on the summer beach as well. Favorites: "Parallel Universe", "Scar Tissue", "Otherside"

For the most part, a pretty average alternative album, though I enjoyed some of the songs. Didn't appreciate the hip-hop/rap bits in a couple of the songs either.

A mixed bag of great tracks and album fillers. Sticks to the RHCP formula to keep the fans happy.

This album has a couple of very good tracks and I generally enjoy RHCP's funky guitar and bass lines. But there are a couple of pretty lame tracks here too and all in all it's a bit too mainstreamy for me. I enjoyed Blood Sugar Sex Magik a lot more.

Kiedis is simply too embarrassing for this band to work. His affected drawl is a bore, his syrupy croon hopelessly pretty boy, his rapping unmentionable, the lyrics a vacuum. As for the funk they're lauded for, lumpen and predictable. Totally in love with themselves. Totally uninteresting.

Not my favorite RHCP album, decent and well-produced but I thought their earlier stuff was way more fun.

The hoooks

Best Song: Parallel Universe. Not a full ballad but still slow enough that Kiedis needs to sing, not rap, which I prefer. Also a track that didn't reach the stratospheric heights of the other singles here, so it doesn't feel so overplayed. Worst Song: Porcelain. Why include such a slow, lullaby-style song in the middle of the album? Overall: No one else sounds at all close to how the RHCP sound, but sometimes they don't sound all that good. Despite Kiedis not having a conventionally strong singing voice, I really prefer his singing to the kind of staccato, Beastie Boys-esque rapping that he favours. Although I was a bigger fan of them when I was younger, listening to them now I can't help but feel like they are the musical equivalent of the TV show 'Friends': difficult to hate (unless you're outright trying to be contrarian), but also so strongly of an era that they become less relevant with each passing year.

máquina de hits! a banda alcançou uma popularidade mainstream tão grande, que não consigo me considerar fã, apesar de gostar de muitas músicas. olhando pra trás, dá pra ver que esse álbum mudou tudo para eles. me surpreende, na minha opinião, que ele ainda não seja considerado um clássico do nível de um nevermind ou dookie, por exemplo.

Flea was the headliner at a local bookshop called Skylight Books in Los Feliz circa 1997. He was part of a reading by several local writers and poets. Flea, being the badass muscle-bound bass player for the CPs also played expendable tough guys in movies. The audience at Skylight was under strict instructions that they would not be able to leave the bookstore once in and they locked the doors right before it started. Flea, for some reason entered from the back of the store and arrived with a bodyguard who stood just offstage, crossed his arms and stared at the audience while Flea read. There couldn't have been more than 40 people there. It was the most ridiculous (and pretentious) thing I'd ever witnessed from a celeb. Especially being that Flea was a resident of Los Feliz, a small relatively friendly community just east of Hollywood where you'd bump into neighbors and familiar faces on Vermont ave or at House of Pies. I could give / take Anthony Kiedis. I always thought he and his hairless nipples were ridiculous. And, that end shot of him running at the end of Under the Bridge was even more reason to hate him. Anyhow, I think this album came after the band had already been replaced by other crappy bands like Incubus, Dashboard Confessional and others. In many ways RHCP had jumped the shark and then they put out this album, which was .... as much as I hate to say, catchy and enjoyable. Even now, more than 10 years later this album is still fun. There's nothing new here, it's the same RHCP, this album doesn't break any boundaries or explore the far reaches of late 90's rock and maybe that's what I like about it. It's less pretentious, almost like an admission by the band ... "Yep, we're old and your parents probably listened to us when they were young, but we can still put together a song with some melodies and entertain you." Since then, Anthony Kiedis put on a shirt, and grew a little caterpillar on his top lip. RHCP’s 1999 mega-hit opens with proof of their growth and immediately shows why it was their biggest album. “Around the World” merges funk and spoken word with big choruses and back-up vocal harmonies. Then the Flea bassline drives “Parallel Universe” and melodic John Frusicante riffs reminiscent of “Under the Bridge” and “Breaking the Girl” carry “Scar Tissue” - it all begins to suggest a maturity you didn’t think the Chili Peppers were capable of. And again there on “Scar Tissue” (and others) with the back-up harmonies! I didn’t think this album would hold up as well as it does. I don’t know if Anthony Keidis ever really grew up, but only 8 years after “Blood Sugar Sex Magic,” it certainly sounded like he had. I explored the divergent paths of RHCP and Pearl Jam in my previous Peppers review, and it’s worth returning to here. Both bands were raw and unrestrained in their 1991 star-making offerings. By 1999 both were more mature and their music more refined and restrained. I love the way both of their sounds evolved. But while “Californication” and “Yield” both held plenty of commercial hit potential, it was no longer something that Pearl Jam pursued. Meanwhile, Keidis and RHCP reveled in it, and as a result have had longer lasting stardom and popularity (even if Pearl Jam has been more consistent in the past two decades).

I kinda love the RHCP but I know other people hate them (or at least feel very ambivalent about them). I have always enjoyed their more bass driven sound. 1 star off for anytime Anthony Kiedis tries to do that rap-rock thing.

Not really a chili peppers fan and this album definitely has a number of their typical songs that reminded me of why. The last song on the album I’d never heard before and found lovely though.

I propose cutting this album down to tracks 1-7 plus Road Trippin’. There’s too much uninspired sounding filler in between. I would rate that album one star more…addition by subtraction.

3 20+ years later and still not feeling this is somehow their best, notorious as it is for the start of the Loudness Wars in mastering. BSSM and Mother's Milk are so much better. So much padding. It ends well, though... Even so would not miss it for another twenty years.

One of my first rock records. Amazing album

This is probably my most played album of all time. My brother had got this CD in 1999 when Scar Tissue hit. This album had TV commercials that aired to hype its release. The next summer in 2000 we basically had this on repeat on our portable Panasonic CD player. I personally can’t rate this album lower than 5 stars. It has so many songs that I’ve heard thousands of times and I still put on playlists to this day. Otherside is among my favourite songs of all time. I knew in the 2000s this album lost it towards the end. Listening how this one way too long. They could have cut out most of the songs after Easily could have been cut out.

I wasn't crazy about this album when it first came out, as it was stylistically pretty far from the BloodSugarSexMagik-era Chili's that I worshipped at the time. Hearing it again so far removed from that time, it's packed with hits and RHCP classics and is totally part of the Frusciante & the boys legacy of this unique band.

I use to like the Chili Peppers, Mother's Milk was pretty good, they were funky, edgy and different than most of the stuff on the radio or MTV and they put on amazing live shows. But something happens when you sell a gazillion copies of a record, chart high on the charts and attract the attention of celebrities and a mainstream following of teenage girls and loser hipsters. They're live shows are probably still a spectacle with the help of a much bigger budget and same with their music, big budget, accessible radio-friendly music so another bazillion people can stream it on Spotify or whatever. Kind of makes me sad...

The slippery down slope of a great band. At least it made them some greenbacks

I still think of this as a 'new' RHCP album... but I now realise it is old, and a classic. Perhaps their best.

Never quite got to five star territory despite the classics on here

Dream of Californication, more like Viva Californication There's really not a lot to say here, this is RHCP - you know them, you heard them, they do one thing and you already have an opinion on it. Californication clocks at under an hour, and even then it starts to drag its feet, and you start to feel like you've been listening to the same song for too long. The thing is I really, really love that song. And credit wher it's due, there are songs like Get on Top to pick up the pace and Porcelain to slow it down, so the listening experience is actually decently varied, and coupled with how simply fun it is to drift away in the sound and listen to the distinct vocals, I really cannot find it in me to focus on the flaws. Otherside and Californication are absolute classics and the obvious standouts of the album.

I don't know why, but I find RHCP annoying if I listen to them for too long. I shouldn't, but I do, for some unbeknownst reason. It might be their vocalist, their repetitive style or California looming over almost every song. Anyway, it was hard for me to focus on the whole album. Nonetheless, every song as an isolated entity has a lot of value: guitar & bass are splendid and compositions are live and catchy. Overall: despite my resentment it's a good record. Highlight: Road Trippin' - Frusciante's voice with acoustic setup did wonders here

Może niektóre utwory są mocno przeruchane, ale to tylko świadczy o tym jak mocno ukorzeniły się w muzyce. Jak na 15 utworów conajmniej 4 każdy zna. Może album jest trochę przydługi i piosenki są dość podobne do siebie, to wciąż zasługuje na porządne 4.5.

Jak mówi klasyk, nie trzeba dużo mówić. Każdy zna, zapewne każdy słuchał w dzieciństwie. Oczywiście że brzmi to trochę powtarzalnie, ale sam akurat nie czuję, jakoby się przedłużało. Bangery typu Californication albo Otherside mówią same za siebie. Rozdarty między 4 a 5, bo nigdy wielkim RHCPowcem nie było, w obliczu poprzednich ocen daję tę 5, bo bym żałował

It’s not a perfect album but the bangers like scar tissue other side and californication make up for all the duds. Also the second half has some like psychedelic sounds or something but it’s cool

Flea’s talent is wasted. He deserves a better band.

When a legit album starts to sound a lot like a parody of the band, you have to worry for the direction the band are taking. Kiedis’ lyrics are frequently gibberish (sometimes literal gibberish) and the man has nothing to say- all non sequiturs and Dr Seuss rhyming and A level poetry) and renders the whole project a disappointment, despite the talents of Frusciante and Flea. That isn’t to say there aren’t highlights and a lot of it is catchy but for a band with our attention they sure waste an opportunity.

I put off listening to this one for weeks because I don't enjoy the RHCP, but this wasn't quite as bad as I was expecting.

Not a fan of the band, but this album was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed that it had more melody and harmony rather than their style of rapping and funk I tend to not like. All 4 members are great musicians and it is really evident with the album’s production that highlights it.

Great album with some massive hits. Liked how they reduced the funk sound which is ultimately what made the album more enjoyable to me

2.9 - "Is Anthony Kiedis going to ruin this song, too?" That's the question that came up again and again listening to this record. I'm baffled as to why they keep him around. The interplay between Flea's bass and Frusciante's guitar is stellar as ever, especially on tracks like "Parallel Universe." And as with other RHCP records I've listened to, I do actually like a couple songs: "Scar Tissue" and "Porcelain." But on other tracks like "Around the World" and "Get on Top", Kiedis is like a shit-flinging gorilla. Probably the worst offense is "Purple Stain", in which he describes fingering a woman on her period (WTF?!). The backing band is the only thing buttressing Kiedis from tumbling head-first into the gutter.

I used to be sort of into the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I bought Blood Sugar Sex Magik on CD like everyone else, and saw them in concert at Lollapalooza at least once, maybe twice (my memory is a bit hazy from those days, haha). However, it didn't take long before I bored of them, and my appreciation for them turned into a strong dislike. They definitely established a unique style, and I give them credit for that, but then they never evolved after that. It was just the same thing, over and over. Not really a fan and this album didn't do anything to change that. 2 stars.

I knew most of the songs on this because it was so big at the time. Not my thing but I listened start to finish in the cat or the freeway. Enjoyed it but don’t love it.

The guitar riffs are great, the bassplay is amazing, the lyrics are as non-sensical as always. But the whole thing is flat. From production to songwriting, it's safe and a bit empty.

Some great tracks but I've never been a huge fan

A seminal album for the Chilis, marking a level of maturity to their sound. Flea's funky bass line decorate chugging rock riffs whilst Antony Kiedis' sometimes abstract lyrical stylings meander across the top. Top stuff.

-"Around The World" and "Parallel Universe" get kinda heavy at the end -"Purple Stain" is quite catchy, the stutter-style lyrics really grab your attention -"Right on Time" is a cool alternation of slow-style lyrics and blazing-fast lyrics. The bass is flying with a cool bassline through the whole thing. -"Get on Top," "Emit Remmus," "I Like Dirt," "Purple Stain" and "Right on Time" are all stand out songs -Great album, all the songs are interesting and most are very good. 5 stars!

How odd. After Bloog Sugar Sex Magik I was almost reluctant to play this. The first tracks did nothing to reassure me. Then scar tissue came on and it was a genuine reaction of "oh yes, of course! This is why people like the chillis." It (scar tissue) goes on just a tiny bit too long, and otherside takes just a tiny bit too long to get going. I'm surprised at how badly otherside has aged, and my desire to skip every track other than road trip was nigh on impossible to resist. Overall, this is a hugely forgettable album with a couple of good tracks.

RHCP is a polarizing band, they are all over the place and have a massive repertoire of singles that you'll hear on the radio. Haven't listened to this album through but it is absolutely stacked with hits, and they're all solid. The guitarist John Frusciante has a history in and out of the band, this is his first album back after a long hiatus, and this summer (2022) he's returning again to the band for a tour. I'm seeing them live for the first time so excited for that and this album helped me get in the mood. Kiedis is the weakest link, but also the band doesn't work without him. All of the pieces fit together well, and this particular lineup has a great synergy in their instrumentals. This album slaps, the b-sides are mostly good, not great. Porcelain is probably the lowest point in the album, it's kind of whiplash to go into something so slow after nonstop high-energy bangers, and then it's right back to it afterwards.

Tää on the one and only ensinmäinen levy josta mulla on tarkkoja muistoja ja joka starttas mun kohdalla bändien ja levyjen kuuntelemisen syrjäyttäen yksittäiset radio mafian hittipaskat. Tottakai siis maailmassa oli niihin aikoihin muitakin asioita kun musa - kuten vaik legopalikat ja muut nassikalle kiinnostavat jutut, mutta tää on jättänyt jälkensä. Se että tää oli se eka jatkuvalla toistolla cd-soittimessa pyörinyt levy, varsinkin kun tää oli jo tullessaan aika arvostettu, on tavallaan poikinut sen että mun käsitys hyvästä valtavirtarockista on pretty much tää levy. Kun siis saan uuden valtavirtarock-levyn kuunneltavaksi niin ennemmin tai myöhemmin mä varmaan vertaan sitä myös tähän plattaan. Jos mennään sitten itse sisätöön. Voi vittu siis onhan tää tasapainonen hieno levy jossa RHCP onnistuu tiputtamaan pois se ”sekopääfunkkirockbändi”-viitan mitä ne kannatteli tähän asti. Ja siis hei, harvoin sanon näin, mutta tässä levyssä ei oo mun mielestä turhia biisejä. Tää on myös oikeen mittainen. …vai olisko se kuitenkin se nostalgia? 5/5

On kyllä kiimaisia äijiä :D Tykkäsin tästä enemmän kuin Blood Sugar Sex Magicista, mutta ehkä jätän silti 3/5. Letkeetä ja onneks muitakin ok biisejä ku loppuun saakka kulutettu nimikko, jota en oo jaksanu moneen vuoteen.

This was a proper gateway album for me so it's hard to be critical. These days I can't stand what the chilli peppers are or do, but for some reason this album was a sliding doors moment where what they produced happened to be what I needed. It's an alright listen. Probably more about the memories it invoked than it being quality.

Chilli behind the foreskin is a lovely, sexy birthday treat. Try it.

This album makes me want to Californicate myself into oblivion as much now as it did back then.

I liked it at the time and still like it now. There's some filler of course, but generally pretty good. Incredible video for Californication too. I think since the success of this, they've tried to make this same album over and over again, without much success. By the Way is good too to be fair.

I generally don't like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and this is definitely a Red Hot Chili Peppers album. The white boy funk is present, the terrible lyrics are present (just naming places does not a lyric make), the whinging songs about drug addiction are present and yet it is far more bearable than anything else they have ever done. This was John Frusciante's first album back with the band after he went all in on the smack for most of the '90s. His guitar sound on this album coupled with the Rick Rubin production is massive. It's a shiny big pop-rock album that even manages to make the sporadic bursts of rap-rock listenable.

Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers (1999) Incorporating elements of hip hop, prog rock, and funk, this album seems designed to broaden the commercial appeal of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ well established and diverse musical explorations of sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. I can imagine that some diehard fans of RHCP’s earlier work might have been disappointed in this development. Anthony Kiedis’ squeaky but clean lead vocals are layered over good, elaborate rock arrangements. Guitarist John Frusciante returns to the RHCP lineup, after a hiatus from 1992-1998 (during which time he had been replaced by Dave Navarro, formerly of Jane’s Addiction). This fundamental change has made a great impact on the sound of Californication. What we get is more mellow, with a predominance of relatively soft grooves—a suitable accompaniment to the widely referential and geographically diverse lyrics, but I’m not sure it improves the art. Solid and melodic bass lines by Flea, and splashy cymbal-heavy drum work by Chad Smith provide musical quality and sonic texture. The album’s diversity sustains interest, but the variety seems aimless. The track “Savior” could be interpreted in a way that inspires thought, but it falls short due to exaggerated ambiguity lack of depth. The sound of the closing track “Road Trippin’” is refreshing, with acoustic stylings and accompanying string ensemble. It almost makes the serious listener want to start the album over again. Almost. It’s good background music, but none of the tracks stand out as immediately gripping (with the possible exception of “I Like Dirt”, which is quite entertaining, with its funky wah-guitar stylings toward the end). I think if one listened to this album a dozen times one could grow to love it, but on first listen, it’s not top shelf. Am I the only one who thinks it’s too long? 3/5

Growing up I didn't really listen to RHCP. I liked a few of their singles but didn't branch out and instead dismissed them as that band that can't stop referencing California into their songs. After listening to Californication, I wish I could've looked through that silly assumption and enjoyed the music. This is really good shit. Aside from the California references in at least 3 of their songs, you have plenty of funky basslines and guitar riffs, some sombre acoustic melodies, and chill vibes. Was lucky enough to see the Red Hot Chilli Peppers at T in the park 2006 one of my all time favourite live performances. This is one of these albums I really like, from Around the World to Californication is brilliant, with Otherside being one of my favourite songs, but the second half is such a let down I usually never get to the end of the album, which is a shame as the album ends on road tripping which is a great song. The mastering on this album is also very poor, these two points make it hard to give this album full marks, but a very good 4 star album that is one of my personal favourites.

Californication es sin duda un discazo que cierra con broche de oro la década de los noventa. Para los fans de siempre de los RHCP fue quizá el disco en el que se vendieron y se fueron al Rock Pop de MTV, y aunque es posiblemente cierto, también es el disco que los movió a la cima, del cual se desprenden sus rolas más conocidas (hoy en día) y sus videos más emblemáticos. Con todo y eso, yo casi veo un disco que se parte en dos, con la primera mitad llena de los sencillos que sonaron en todos lados y que tal vez a los fans de antes no les encantan; y luego otra mitad con rolas más oscuras para esos fans y que no se movieron en radio o tv. Mi favorita es seugro alguna de las que movieron como sencillo, pero no sé decir cuál de todas.

I understand why this album was so popular, but it's just not for me. The songs are good and funky, but end up sounding the same. Some cool bass lines and good melodies.

What is there to say? Have listened to it a hundred times and it holds up. The second half drags a little bit but the first half is all fire.

Does what it says on the tin. Think I owned this on CD, but never really listened because white boy metal rapping is just not good. They can be good when being melodic, but otherwise it isn't my lane. Was happy when Spotify started playing 'similar' music at the end of the album

While the return of RHCP's impressive guitarist definitely influenced their turning point album, "Californication", I think the irresistible groove and kicks of it should be credited more on the amazing and now one of my favorite bass player, Flea. And of course, I am expecting the single that boasts that infamous video game themed music video. It's as good as I remember (although "Otherside" is personally better). Aside from being a nice title track, the song "Californication" is also the last great song in the entire album. I could consider the closer "Road Trippin'" decent, but anything between it and the title track is personally monotonous and uninteresting. That is disappointing because as I listen to the first five tracks, I thought that I'll have another five star album. Still, I love the unique funky flavor of it. I get the hype around these guys. But if I would listen to it again, I would stop right after the title track.

I'm old enough to remember when this came out, and was absolutely everywhere, and I absolutely hated it at the time. Listening to the whole album reveals it's not too bad; it has a certain ADHD energy and Kleidis is a surprisingly sharp lyricist. But every song relies on the same formula, which wears a bit thin, and it's far too long.

What a great band. This is not even their best album.

A whole different album beyond the singles that have been played to death on alternative rock/mainstream radio. Pleasantly surprised by the more hard-driving uptempo tracks on this one, as they push well beyond what's expected from an RHCP song. The slower, ballad-like tracks come out of left field as well, but balance some of the more indulgent energies on the rest of the LP.

This album started off really strong. If this album ended after 7 songs or so it would probably be a 5 star album. It really dropped off pretty hard after that though. Most of the songs in the second half of the album just felt like uninspired filler. First half - 5 stars, second half - 2 stars. 3.5 total.

08/06/1999 Playful and rhythmic, this bass guitar heavy album feels like the backdrop for a summer day playing beach volleyball on the Pacific or a sweaty dance floor at a rock club. With some of the most catchy tunes every to hit the radio, the diversity of vocal tones and lyrical themes (of resistance and freedom) complete the prescription of joy and release that cause so many embrace the entire album.

Listening to a bunch of RHCP songs back to back made me wonder if it wasn’t for Flea how long they would have been relevant or if they would even be relevant in the first place. The songwriting abilities of the members are…lacking and Antony doesn’t have that great a voice, although I appreciate him trying out a lot of different styles. The distinctive groove of Flea’s bass is really the only great thing about RHCP. He clearly has a lot of funk and disco influences and his skill never fails to shine through. Overall, a listenable album but I don’t think it really holds up that well in comparison to the albums of rock giants they were up against at the time (if I want to hear rapping over a groove baseline then I’ll listen to RATM) Best tracks: Californication/Scar Tissue Worst tracks: Road Trippin’/Get On Top (Also points deducted for Antony being a nonce)

An old stand-by for me. I love RHCP. Bass player is one of the best there is, and this is one of my favorite albums of theirs.

When it is good, it is excellent but too many weaker tracks take away from the album. If this had been on vinyl they would have to have edited down to 10 or 11 tracks. This would improve it a lot.

Thank god they stopped him rapping on every song. The rapping was so bad as to make any of the songs with raps on unbearable. The slower songs were the highlight for me. A really inconsistent album.

A lot of people give RHCP hate, and especially this era onward when they got super radio friendly, but I always liked it. Solid songs, if a little overplayed, and a lot of fun. It could maybe slim down a bit, but what album in the late nineties wasn't kinda bloated lol.

This is RHCP at a perfect blend of funky-punky aggro, and softened alternative pop rock sound. It is tight, but still feels full. The only thing I might change is the song order, as many placements of songs in the overall album experience stick out to me.

I’d riot if canonical albums like this weren’t included. One of my favourites and a long-term resident in the tape deck of my Tarago when I was in high school. I can understand people not enjoying all their stuff, but there’s just something about the Peppers. Only downer- a bit too much rhymy stuff in Around the World.

I'm always a Chili Peppers fan. Lots of great songs on this one, but some of it gets a little weird so only 4 stars.

Completely biased rating because FUCK YESSSSSS!! This is the sound of me discovering a musical preference of my own, the sound of being 12 in 1999 and figuring out who I want to be. It is an undeniably groovy and unique album that is a direct line to my younger self.

Have heard most of these songs a bunch of times when I was younger. Didn't notice some cool things like the polyrhythms on the opening track until just now. I forgot about porcelain, what a nice and sad song. Back half of the album isn't as strong as the first, but still good.

Let's go oOoOO o RHCPs fucking rock. I always had one of their songs in my little folder when I first started playing guitar. They were almost always the most fun. They are so playful, never afraid to do something they think is fun, and it just shines through in their music. It's really a step-up from Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Frusciante has some of the most memorable riffs ever on this album, Smith makes every song a Bop to listen to, Kiedis is as crazy as always and Flea always fucking delivers haha. I grew up with this album, and some songs like "Parrallel Universe" and "Easily" made me surprised that I'd never really heard them before, and now it's impossible for me to choose a favorite song to put on my playlist so it's an undeniable 5 for me.

I remember when this album came out and I am familiar with several of the tracks from this album. By the time Californication was released, I think I had heard enough Red Hot Chili Peppers to last my lifetime. "Scar Tissue" and "Otherside" verge on tracks that I might like, but by the end of listening to the whole album I still feel like I have had enough of RHCP. ¿Is it the vocals that sink the album below being okay?

Back in '99-'00 I was almost sick and tired of this album as it was pretty much everywhere and that's a sure way to make me run away from an artist. However, I've always been a RHCP fan and I just gave this album time to cool off. How long? Some 15 years x-D ...I still think Bloodsugarsexmagik is their peak achievement and I resented a bit that they lost a huge chunk of their funkier side, not entirely, but just enough. Guess they've reclaimed some of it since, but, anyway, Californication is a huge album.

Haven’t heard it in full for a while, not as good as I remembered it but it is a classic alright, another one from the golden era of MTV, remember the videos it came with? My good did they went the extra mile for that, back then hit records needed hit videoclips and californication was a superb example of that, cinematic Impressionism in Scar Tissue, concept video with otherside and of course, state of the art technological advance show off with Californication, me and my siblings would spend hours looking a those clips and even downloading them from the internet, good times. Now the record: it’s maybe too long and tries to keep the funk from BSSM even though they were in a completely different place by then, some songs are just too out of the concept even if they sound Peppers AF, the word californication sound just silly nowadays but let’s remember that this is the album that gave us Scar tissue and Road trippin which are both classics for the ages.

Peppers' 7th and the most successful album. Frusciante is back! Billboard's critic Paul Verna, mentioned that the album brought out "the group's softer, melodic side", as opposed to their previous six albums. I have underestimated RHCP previously because of their popularity. Their songs were everywhere on tv and radio. Now I understand that I was wrong. This album's sound is technically perfect and melodic!

This sounds exactly like what you would think it would and somehow more. It definitely has way more depth than I initially gave it credit for. Definitely can only gain from more than one listen.

The first time I heard these guys was 1991. I bought the Blood Sugar Sex Magik album and all I can say is that, at the time, I was looking for music that didn't sound like anything else. And, like, the song Give It Away just seemed like - wait, is this guy having sex with some girl's entire family? Like what is this about? It seemed like something my parents would hate. But now, looking back on most of the songs by this band, nothing seems all that good. Scar Tissue is maybe the song that sticks on this one. But in the first track, he rhymes 'entertain ya' with 'Pennsylvania' and then the sweat stains on the rhymes in Californication are real rough. And then comes Purple Stain and I'm like, man, fuck you.

Hmm...crap, but not quite as crap as I recall. That's growth, boys

15 songs??? Ooof. I don’t think I have this in me today. I never even bought Blood Sugar Sex Magic, but I did see them play at Lolapalooza one year and it was fun. It’s a good time live and I don’t mind “Scar Tissue,” but… Also, I saw Anthony Kiedis eating once outside a Whole Foods. He was probably telling the person sitting across from him about how he had ideas for 472 more songs about California. Good conversation.

This is probably a three star album, let's be honest, but I've got a massive soft spot for it, so bumping it up to four. I'm a John Frusciante fanboy, for sure. A lot of these tracks made great karaoke tunes, too. Fave track - "Otherside", maybe, or "Parallel Universe"

The return of Frusciante meant the return of RHCP period. It’s easy to forget that by 1999 they had become a somewhat forgotten band. In Californication however they delivered an absolute monster of an album - the chemistry was back and the band were reborn. The singles were massive; Scar Tissue, Californication, Otherside and Around the world were all huge. But it’s when you get past the big hits where the real joy of this album lies. There is still lots of old school raw RHCP funk but blended increasingly with the more mellow, melodic side of the band (for me this is where more of the stronger tracks on the album lie). Keidis’ vocals are his strongest yet, Flea and Smith are an absolute force of a rhythm section and Frusciante sprinkles the magic on top.

One of my favourite Chillis albums but the back end has some filler. First half is absolutely banging.

This album highlights the quite spectacular impact Frusciante has on this band. Coming off the back of serious heroin addiction, Flea got him back into the fold, he cleaned up and they let him loose on this. Everything he does on this album brings out the best in the other members. His chemistry with Flea and Chad are just a joy to the ears and his background harmonies just lift Kiedis sometimes nonsensical lyrics somewhere else. Too many great tracks too sit and list but it rarely flags for a moment, ignoring the huge singles, songs like Saviour, Emit Remmus and This Velvet Glove just highlight not only how strong this whole album is but also the direction in which they were heading for By The Way (which doesn’t come close to touching this album despite its huge success) A joy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When I was in middle school and high school, whenever I rode the bus to school I would be listening to music on my Sony Walkman portable CD player. Inevitably, people would usually ask me what I was listening to. Whenever I was listening to something that I knew most people my age wouldn’t have heard of or liked (most of the time) I would say I was listening to Red Hot Chili Peppers. They were popular enough and seemingly acceptable enough for most people not to question me after I gave that answer. Now, more often than not, it feels like I have to defend liking this band for any number of reasons. Truth be told, from about 2000-2006, I was obsessed with RHCP. After hearing this album, I decided that I wanted to one day make music that sounded like them. Even though I never really did that exactly, they were the first band I remember making me feel that way. What’s undeniable about this band is immense talent of John Frusciante, Flea, and Chad Smith. What’s also undeniable is the chemistry that these 4 people have together. Anthony Kiedis can very often be a ridiculous and embarrassing singer and lyricist, but he never sounds insincere, for better or worse. What’s always apparent with RHCP is that these 4 people need each and need this band. This is a band that’s forged through trauma, grief, and addiction that always sounds like they love each other and love making music, even after almost 40 years together. Californication is the album that got me into them. I’m not sure if it’s their best or my favorite, but it’s definitely one where it felt they were able to tap into some form of magic. As with any RHCP album, there are some notably groan-inducing lyrics, but there also a whole bunch of bangers.

No thanks. Typical RHCP and not even one of their "good" albums. Anything that isn't a single is typically bad and the singles only pass because they're generally catchy and "hey it's a chili peppers single so we have to play it on the radio." But the more you listen the worse it gets. Their generation's maroon 5.

I started at a 3 but it continued slipping down to a 2. I found myself waiting for it to be over numerous times. I'm not a fan of his vocal style; apparently I can deal with it when hearing a track come on randomly, but over and over on an album... yea no. Scar Tissue is pretty good though.

My favorite version of the Chili Peppers is the one where John Frusciante came back to the band after rehab (which starts with this album) and encouraged the band to lean in to the California Pop sound. I love it when the Chili's embrace the harmonies like the Eagles and Beach Boys would do. They do that on the better songs from this album, and really fine tune that element on their follow up album, "By The Way", which is my favorite RHCP album. I always waver between calling the band the Chili's and the Pepper's. They surely don't give a shit. But my wavering is somewhat fitting. Sometimes Kiedis goes all in with the harmonies, but other times he realizes he's got an epic bass player in Flea who just wants to funk out all over the place. And that's not a bad thing at all. There's great beauty in a song like "Porcelain" that sits just fine with Flea slapping that bass all over on "Around The World" and "Emit Remmus". I'll never understand why a song like "I Like Dirt" exists among these gems. Makes me wish Rick Rubin would have tightened up the number of songs a bit.

I<m not a big RHCP fan, this is the first album I listen to from front to back. But it has quite a few high quality moments. My favorite moments are the poppier ones I find their Funk freak outs a little distracting though the skill of the playing is undeniable. Lots of good stuff. Hoewel ik John Frusciante als 1 van mijn favoriete muzikanten zie, heb ik nooit heel veel brood gezien in the Red Hot Chili Peppers; Onrustig allemaal maar, met hier een daar een aardige of zelfs goede uitschieter.

Echt een tof album. Die eerste zes zijn echt killertracks maar ook daarna blijft het supergoed. Ik zal nooit fan van Kiedis worden, dus kost ze altijd een ster.

Nooit een enorme Chili Peppers fan geweest, maar dit is toch best wel een lekker album.

Another classic from my youth that aged spectacularly well...except the funk stuff which I never got. All together a great album though from top to bottom with some of their best songs and concepts.

The Californication music video terrified me as a child.

I had my RHCP epiphany while I listened to Californication: when you sandwich the "linger on your block and give the finger to a cop" goofball funk rock sex rhymes between your softer songs about the Hollywood lifestyle and addiction and all that, it just makes one sound about as earnest as the other. It's like, come on, LL Cool J, are you Bad or do you Need Love? I'm certainly not buying both. The starting track says it all for the album (and the band): the verses and the chorus try to have their two admittedly well-crafted sounds co-exist, but one inevitably comes at the expense of the other. In this case, they're both disposable fluff, but at least one tries to have a little fun—even if said fun was better earlier in their careers. Key Tracks: Around the World, Get On Top

listening to this album on a proper pair of headphones is both a revelation and a form of torture. hearing songs like Scar Tissue on literally anything better than an aftermarket stereo FM broadcast in a honda from the 80s reveals a lot of nuance and neat performance details by a band of incredibly talented people. the downsides of course are that a) the mix/master is atrocious, and b) the fact that it's RHCP. Louder tracks reduce audiophile grade equipment to sounding like you're using a 5 pack of skull candy earbuds from 2003, quieter tracks are exhausting in the way that only brick wall mixes are. Excusing that, not that you should, the larger problem is that RHCP are consistently one of the biggest misuses of musical talent in recorded history but that's almost neither here nor there. at its best it's got earworms that are still living 20 years later. when it's not, it's Anthony Kiedis literally jiving (poorly) over aimless wanking. it's almost a shame that the good parts, while few and far between, are as good as they are. would be easier to just ignore entirely.

One of the great classic albums of it's times, and it's not even necessarily considered to be the best RHCP album. It's amazing how many hits came off of just this album. Much better than I expected. The good stuff (the singles and a couple of other tracks) are very good, but possibly I'm a little jaded about them due to their ubiquity at the time of release. The weaker elements are pretty good, making an overall pleasing and engaging listening experience. But they really should have invested in a few shirts.

This album is a quintessential 90's record. The poppy upbeat vibe just resonates with me. Most every song has me grooving at my desk, and singing along. There's a heavy dose of nostalgia to this one as well, but I'm trying to temper it as much as I can. Still this one is a gem.

Ero rimasto talmente colpito dai soli di Frusciante nel videoclip di Scar Tissue che davano su MTv, che comprai quest'album a 5 mila lire dal marocchino al mercato, una copia pirata ovviamente. Secondo me Californication funziona. È bilanciato e variegato. Ci sono alcune tracce che passano in sordina ma non per questo meno valide. Darei un 5 emotivo, ma il mio album preferito rimane One Hot Minute, che forse è l'album che suona meno RHCP degli altri (purtroppo non è in lista).

Some great songs here "Classic Rock" standards. Scar Tissue, Otherside, and Californication. The middle to end sounds the same with the exception of the last song Road Trippin'.

I have listened to this album many times before, and it was just as good this time as the first time I heard it. In my opinion a real classic, a more or less a timeless album. I do find myself enjoying the more calm/slow songs a lot more than the more rock/punk songs. There is a lot of things to say about this but to keep it short: A fucking good album.

This album starts off strong with 'Around the World' and then just keeps it rolling with 'Parallel Universe' and 'Scar Tissue'. It's hard to find a song on this album that isn't a banger; even the softer songs hit hard. This is arguably the Red Hot Chili Peppers at their best.

It’s no Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I get this is Frusciante‘s triumphant return on guitar after he left back in the early 90s but I dunno. This record is a bit too tame for me. The singles are all ok, but overall the rest of the album is just fine. It’s not terrible, it’s not great. I feel like it’s like the zenith of just regular ass RHCP songs. There’s nothing here that grabs me like their earlier stuff. Probably a good listen for someone just diving in but the old stuff is better. Hate to be that guy but it’s how I feel.

I was amazed how many hits were on this album

Haven't listened to this album in years. First thing I noticed is it's a causality of the Loudness Wars. The fidelity was just awful. First half of the album is good, but then everything between Californication and Road Trippin is garbage. If you picked just the highlights of the album it'd be a 4 star album, if you fixed the audio, it'd be 5. As it stands, it's a 2.5.

Every so often an album of genius comes along. This time it was the chili peppers turn to prove the perfect album does exist.

Couple classics, lot of stuff that sounds generically like the RHCP

In Conclusione: Conosco molto bene questo album perché è uscito quando ho iniziato a suonare la chitarra e lo ascoltavo letteralmente a ripetizione. Non lo ascoltavo ormai da almeno 10 anni (ogni tanto ascolto giusto Road Trippin'). Riascoltarlo per intero mi ha fatto un'impressione inaspettata. All'epoca era snobbato un po' come l'album commerciale dei RHCP e in un certo senso è effettivamente anche vero rispetto per dire a Blood Sugar Sex Magik, però devo dire che l'impressione che ho avuto riascoltandolo oggi è molto diversa. Sarà un po' perché il commerciale di oggi è sicuramente molto peggio del commerciale di ieri però io invece l'ho percepito come più accessibile e sintetico. Sicuramente ha perso un po' della parte più energica e grezza aggiungendo i ritornelloni un po' pop, però allo stesso tempo mi ha creato un mix coerente dove le parti più pop e cantabili sono incorniciate comunque dagli assoli oggettivamente brutti ma che in qualche modo funzionano di Frusciante così come il basso spinto di Flea e le vecchie parti più funky/fusion. Diciamo che non hanno perso di spontaneità e anzi in qualche modo mi arrivano come più vulnerabili. Capire i testi (quando lo ascoltavo non capivo niente) mi ha fatto strano, non mi aspettavo che fossero così onirici e un po' filosofici, mi aspettavo una cosa molto più diretta. Ho apprezzato certe immagini ma ho anche avuto l'impressione che il criterio principale della scrittura dei testi fosse il suono delle parole più che il senso. Sicuramente non mi aspettavo riferimenti a Cobain o a Star Wars in Californication. Una cosa che mi ha colpito negativamente è la produzione, all'inizio pensavo che le cuffie bluetooth mi avessero switchato in mono tanto è chiuso il mix a livello spaziale. Nonostante questo mi piace la batteria che invece non avevo mai notato più di tanto, Chad suona tutto coi rimshot e devo dire che gli dà una bella spinta in più. Penso di aver apprezzato di più anche le sfumature del cantato di Antony. Un pezzo che non apprezzavo da adolescente ma che invece ho rivalutato come uno dei migliori dell'album è Porcelain. Diciamo che a me non dispiace quando i gruppi diventano un po' più accessibli anche se è un po' una unpopular opinion. Gli darei un 5 solo per la nostalgia ma penso che la produzione, alcune parti un po' incerte a livello compositivo e certe svolte pop di troppo mi fanno scendere il voto a 4. Comunque Road Trippin' per me rimane un gran pezzo. Strano eh, ma una gran pezzo.

Questo album suona veramente malissimo, distrutto da compressione e limiting. Non mi fa impazzire lo stile del cantante, anche se i testi son belli, ma in generale molte cose del gruppo mi piacciono. Nel voto finale sono stato influenzato negativamente dal suono.

попса пидорская, тяжести никакой Ну вот и вылезло очередное восхваляемое нетакимикаквсе говнецо. Вообще РХЧП для меня всегда были одной из тех групп, о которых я знал, но слушать не было никакого желания. Таких довольно много, даже среди супер популярных, поэтому я думал, что ничего особенного. Но все чаще мне начинает казаться, что их не слушает вообще никто. Все знают, но никто намеренно не думает «послушаю-ка я сегодня Ред Хот Чилли Пепперс, целый альбом». Этж сюр какой-то. Семён Слепаков разве что подобным может заняться. Мне не нравятся РХЧП. Причем не нравятся как раз по тем причинам, за что их привыкли любить. Мелодичный вокал и игривый речитатив Энтони Кидиса? — Раздражающий акцент, сладкий неприятный голосок и абсоютно уебанский клоунский флоу. Серьёзно, даже Бисти Бойз лучше читали. Элегантные лаконичные партии Джона Фрушанте? — Одинаковый палм-пикинг в половине песен без единого интересного мелодичного хода. Грувовые фанковые бас-партии Фли? — Да дрочево какое-то, слушать заёбывает, пусть и есть несколько знаменитых ликов. Я никогда не был о них особо высокого мнения, но ознакомившись поближе, опустил планку на самое дно. Реп-рок вообще был большой ужасной ошибкой. Да, и Рейдж Эгейнст Машин. Да, и Корн. Да, и Систем оф э Даун (самые речитативные их песни). Это же все говно бля, кринжатурное говно. И на примере этих калифорнийских крекеров мы можем видеть почему. Сука реп-ориентированные песни это просто ужас, рука сама тянется выключить. А как же мелодичные треки? Ну, они получше. Есть что-то неплохое, Otherside там, Emit remmus. Но это всё равно звучит как хуёвый попс нулевых, порождённый Колдплеем. Даже тот факт, что альбом 99 года не спасает. Если это и не подражание, значит оно также стало катализатором вот этого вот всего. Ну его нахуй, нахуй ред хот чилли пепперс, нахуй. Ещё и в Road trippin спиздили мелодию из Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely Хускера Ду. Нахуй ред хот чилли пепперс, 4/10

Нормально музло. Старше потенциального слушателя лет на 15-20, конечно, ну да и хуй бы с ним. С Parallel Universe прокачался нормально. Around the World, Californication, Otherside, Road Trippin' - хорошие, крепкие треки. Остальное не бесит. Хотя мусора тоже завезли, что выкинуть можно. Сюда мог бы отнести и Scar Tissue, которая вроде как самый популярный трек с альбома, получивший Грэмми. Вообще пустышка попсовая. Но в целом годный попс, который способен наравне с Coldplay послужить примером.
