Reviews (page 6 of 12)

Really enjoyed the album, very good vocals and instrumental. Opened me up to a new rock band to listen to and sparked my interest in. Will definitely listen too again.

A classic and quintessential rock album

Really enjoyed this and a very pleasant surprise as I only knew them as "that band that made Smoke on the Water". Drums and guitar are fantastic on this and I have a soft spot for hard rock + organ.

Deep Purplr just do hard rock very well. Some may disagree though…

Juicy synth puts this album up a tier

The other creators of heavy metal. The sound on the guitars on this album is awesome and authentic. It's not something you hear currently. Excellent stuff.

I remember listening to my Dad's Deep Purple records (yep, vinyl) when I was a young un. Still enjoy these grooves.

Solid "rock en route to metal". 🤘 Fave track - “Child in Time” is prime wizard rock! 🧙‍♂️ (I know it’s not literally about wizards but it fits in with the tradition of rock and metal bands doing ten minute epics, and they’re about wizards more often than not 😆 )

I can so hear early metal. very cool

Delivered cookies while listening to this one

At first i wasn't into it, but I grew to respect what is going on here.

The album slaps

I have never listened to anything other than their radio play hits. This was a pleasant surprise

From Neal: Ah yes, when Purple went from a loud pop band to….something else; also led to Ian Gillian getting a call from Andrew Lloyd Weber.

One of my first full on rock albums and works at showcasing everybodys talent

More interesting than I expected - however still not 100% my cup of tea. Musicianship - especially the drumming and the organ playing is spectacular - and the pace of the album is good and not too long. I mean as far as proto-hard rock / metal geek music goes - this still hasn’t edged too much into the abyss of corniness - but you can see the Spinal Tap tropes slowly inching their way into the music. Anyway - a strong offering from the genre.

A great pick of early hard rock with plenty of great moments. Favorites: "Speed King", "Bloodsucker", "Child in Time"

LP (déjà eu)

Great keyboard, great screams.

Child in Time is an all time great. I dig the rest too. I always forget that this was a couple of years before Machine Head. This sounds like a band far more together than their first album together.

a GOOD album. i really enjoyed the album, but i found i enjoyed it way more with headphones! "child in time" is such a standout. definitely allows the album to head into the progressive rock category. i was surprised at how heavy this album got! but it was an enjoyable surprise.

This album went hard and didn't stop! I'm familiar with some of the band's later stuff, which isn't quite as heavy. I really enjoyed their heavier sound! I thought all of the instrumentation on this album was done really well, from guitar to bass to drums...and the organ work was outstanding too! I really feel like each band member got his talent and instrument appropriately represented on this album! Really a great addition, and an unexpected one from Deep Purple. It demonstrates that Deep Purple, a somewhat unlikely candidate, was part of shaping the heavy metal and hard rock sound of the 70s. I really dug it!

I like the cover of imitating mount Rushmore, I’ve herd of this band before but I don’t know where from though… It all starts with a wall of noise in the form of speed king. It forms into a rather good heavy rock banger to be fair. It does sound very of its time though. Bloodsucker isn’t as good, still good ( especially the guitars) but it’s just so 70’s rock if you get what I mean. Child in time is great as it slows the album’s pace down showing how the band can be varied without losing any of it’s signature sound. And my god it’s long! After that one comes the 7 ( nearly 8) minute banger flight of the rat it’s a great combination of the heavier more typical rock of the 70’s and the long epic ( like child in time), yeah this one is definitely a must! Into the fire is just slow and heavy and fairly short; not my favourite but it still stands a lot of ground as an individual song. Living wreck tricks the reader at the start giving off vibes that it’s going to be the band’s huge experiment, and while it’s not that, it’s still a fairly decent ( again slow and short) rocking tune. Hard lovin’ man closes off this album a final burst of brilliant 7 minute energy, but it’s my least favourite of the longer songs to be honest. Overall, yeah it’s great i’am not sure if it’s in my top albums of all time but certainly like top 20 of the 70’s.

Absolutely wonderful. I don’t like much rock very many but this one just had something about it. I enjoyed most of it.

It's pretty good but doesn't go as hard as Machine Head. Child in Time was a pretty interesting prog/ballad.

Ágætis plata. Mæli með.

Classic rock with a tinge or the abrasiveness that later becomes heavy metal. Child in Time is the standout for me: I like Deep Purple the best when the go for a more progressive sound compared to more straight up blues. Good album!

Psychadellicclassic rock

Nice mix of the heavy stuff.

Yeah, rock!

Goes hard. 8/10

Solid guitar, keys, drums, singer..I can see how this band and album have probably influenced artists. It’s my first time listening and I enjoyed it, though I hadn’t grown up with my parents listening to music like this and therefore have never been too in touch with classic rock.

Hard rock

Deep Purple seems to be right at the cusp between rock and roll of the sixties with organs and flutes? to the start of hard rock of the seventies. They're a gap in my classic rock knowledge. I like this album. I think it will grow on me with familiarity. Different songs seem to emphasize the skill set of the musicians. Vocals, drums, guitar.

Always a banger

Nothing to say, it's Deep Damn Purple!

If you like 70s rock, you'll like this. It's very fun.

I had always associated Deep Purple with smoke on the water and a simple uninspired sound, but I was very wrong. They definitely listened to some Hendrix before writing this album because I can see a lot of the influence. Really enjoyed the synths throughout the record. I also like how the vocals feel like an instrument harmonizing with the rest of the band, rather than overpowering the whole song.

Only heard a few tracks because of Spotify limitations, but solid. They are even better live though!

Early 70's hard rock/proto metal. Was innovative at the time, and still holds up today, though it sometimes sounds a bit generic to more modern ears. Child in Time and Living Wreck are good. 3.5/5

Four stars An all-time classic, and an album which still holds its own many years after it was released. As is usually the case with those classic albums, I won't write a full-blown review here given that others have already written wonderful stuff about them and there's not much I can add that I feel could be relevant and interesting. *Deep Purple In Rock* is just a timeless gem for anyone who has even a remote interest in hard rock. Go and listen to it a.s.a.p. [Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 974 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 10 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 7 Albums from the list I will *not* include in mine (as I think many others are more important): 8 Albums I might not be able to judge (some might end up on my final list but it's because I recognize how culturally important they are): 1]

Deep Purple is a referent of rock 70's. "Child in time" is a great composition.

great rock album!

Trying to imagine someone hearing this for the first time in 1970... After even just one pass-through of the frenetic "Speed King" one thing should be obvious - these guys could PLAY. Amazing musicianship that over the course of this album they were clearly not shy about showing off - nearly every song has some sort of solo or break from each instrument. This was Purple's 4th album but the first with this lineup and the changes from their previous incarnation are dramatic, mostly with the stunning vocals from Ian Gillan. Nobody could go from a soft melodic passage to a blood-curdling scream and back again like him. Deep Purple were/are an interesting study - I know for a short time in the early 70s they were as big as any artist but as time goes on their influence seems to be hidden or forgotten. Black Sabbath gets a lot of credit as perhaps the "originators" of heavy metal but I softly disagree - put this album up against Sabbath's debut which came out the same year and this hits more of the "metal" benchmarks [aside: Sabbath's first is fantastic and belongs more in a doom rock realm] - fast, loud, articulate playing, moody (e.g. "Child In Time" which admittedly is a bit doomy-sounding). Having said that, simply labeling this as "heavy metal" isn't accurate -> aside from the obvious heavy blues base there are elements of prog and jazz throughout the album, and not to be discounted is guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's heavy medieval/classical influence which is obvious in pretty much every solo he's ever recorded. His interplay with organist Jon Lord is what helped define this sound and I don't know of many (any?) others that really matched this formula. My one complaint with this album isn't necessarily with the band/material but the fact that it kind of sounds like shit on many songs. Yes it was 1970 but sonically it never has matched up with their contemporaries and is sometimes a turnoff for me. Knocked down a bit for lack of obvious hits and mix but it's still a vital document in the advent of talented hard rock / metal. Highly recommended. 8/10 4 stars.

aj aj, dobit ce 4

A vital piece of rock history, which I dismissed when I first heard it as a teenager and enjoyed it a lot more coming back to it now. Deep Purple go hard and foreshadow heavy metal blues, all the way from 1970. Across seven tracks, they brew up a storm with extended jams, heavy riffs and truly hair-raising vocals from the wonderful Ian Gillan. There's great technical proficiency on show from the whole band, but for me, the key ingredient elevating Deep Purple above some of the other hard rock I've heard on this list is Jon Lord's amazing organ playing. It's a major contributor to the sound of the album, and it's hard to imagine many of these songs without it. It's only three minutes in when we're treated to the first interplay between Lord and Blackmore, alternating lead solos on "Speed King". Lord gives the organ the flashy showmanship of lead guitar, while Blackmore electrifies the blues with power and precision. It's the first of many great instrumental moments on "...In Rock", later displayed through multiple solos in "Child in Time", whammy bar galore in "Hard Lovin' Man", Ian Paice's drumming at the end of "Flight of the Rat", and much more besides. In the centre of the album is the magnificent "Child in Time", perhaps Lord's (and the band's) greatest showcase. It's a perfectly paced ten minutes, from the delicate, spacious organ intro to the verse's foreboding, haunting melody, into Gillan's wordless vocals slowly ascending up the register to spine-chilling heights, before the swung rhythm kicks in and Blackmore lets rip. Eventually it settles back down and we're treated to the same build up all over again. It towers above everything else on the album, deservedly so. Inevitably, in between the highlights of "Speed King", "Child in Time" and "Flight of the Rat", there are some more forgettable tracks. "Bloodsucker" and "Living Wreck" aren't short of energy and strong riffs, but for me they're both quite run of the mill in comparison to the peaks reached elsewhere. However, this is powerful heavy rock, brilliantly performed, with just the right level of spontaneity to imagine how visceral the band must have been live in this era. Feeling generous in the afterglow of all those ear-splitting solos and going with a 4!

Pretty solid classic rock

Good album. I enjoyed almost every track and found the songwriting creative and fresh. I can definitely see how Deep Purple are a precursor to metal

Was surprised to find myself enjoy this as much as I did, as I was expecting this kind of rock to be maybe too much for me. The songs appeal are not meant to be the lyrics, and the lyrics are blended with the sound. The overall instrumentation is really pleasant though.

I love Deep Purple, especially with the classic Mark II lineup :) This album kicks ass

the 1995 child in time remaster for 10mins and 15 seconds was just this yesteryear solos, neil young 'get lost in the music' style which I really enjoyed. I also really enjoyed a 20 song album. None of this 11 or 12 nonsense to optimise for spotify algorithms.

Really solid - hard to believe it was 1970

This was surprisingly theatrical and tasty, I would say a weak 4 for too many classic tropes that grate against my other joys of this album.

Very atmospheric and unorthodox, with lots of instrumental parts and little singing. 4 for creativity

Would love to have been around with Sabbath, Zeppelin, and Deep Purple touring and releasing music. Deep Purple are my least favourite of the three but this album is chunky, loud, epic.

Some amazing guitar riffs, very different to what I was expecting. Really enjoyed it

Of course Child in Time is a CLASSIC. Also loved Black Night. The rest was very good. My kind of rock.

Great album of the era. Not really a bad song on the record, strongly recommend to anyone remotely interested in classic rock.

Milestone (heh) in Rock

They really did just keep releasing Highway Star huh? It's kinda cute, dad rock. The guitar solos are fun, and how good was that song that went for ten minutes.

Great hard rifts. Enjoyed the album especially Child in Time and Living Wreck

Objectively a great record. Just doesn't hook me to make playlist. Child in Time reminds me so much of a maiden song I can't quite out my finger on

Not what I expected. Loved it!

This album makes me wanna drive a muscle car and wear a leather jacket

sehr klassischer HardRock

real cool shit going down on this piece

Love the pure rock sound in this album

🤟🏼

4/5 nice album with good songs in it.

Like it a lot more than I expected. I'd only really listened to Deep Purples "Smoke on the Water" which has been overplayed and over rated. So I enjoyed how much fun this album was.

Can’t fault it. It’s got to be another 4* if only for Black Knight. I remember dancing to this at school discos ! Who is compiling the lists to have 3 Purple albums already ?

4.4 - It feels fitting that this album features the band's likenesses carved into Mt. Rushmore. This image though ostentatious, in retrospect feels appropriate given how uncannily Deep Purple seemed to underpin and even portend what was to come in rock, both good and bad. In this album, we hear elements of prog, glam, early metal, free jazz, as well as butt rock, intertwined artfully. It's a sound that so many bands have tried mightily to channel, though lacking the same abundance of virtuosity. Here's a band honed to a razor's edge - the guitar riffs shred impeccably, the arrangements executed with technical polish to almost imbue them with a sense of spontaneity. There's considerable majesty and drama in these tracks - taken out of context, some will find it too audacious. I think much of that criticism may lie in our shared understanding of rock 'n' roll excess, as parodied by Spinal Tap. Taken by itself though, this album is a beacon that well deserves a place in the classic rock canon.

Not all songs were great

Great record

Never really listened to Deep Purple besides smoke on the water and highway star. Good album

Buen púrpura profundo

"Mum! Dad got drunk in the basement with his friends again and won't stop singing". Jk. Dad rock ftw

Enjoyed this album, they were very similar to Cream.

Pretty good.

long songs, jacking off instruments, but somehow good

very fine english proto-heavy metal musick fav track: child in time

Very Black Sabbath-y. Enjoyed it quite a bit and will definitely require a revisit

4.5 stars. A classic.

Good rock and roll baby 4/5

Never really listened to their stuff, only when it was in a various compilation. Quite enjoyed this.

I enjoy this album, but it's not my favorite Deep Purple.

Good Shit

Fede riffs og god rock

altough child in time is a timeless masterpiece this album is overal of lesser quality than lets say machine head, its not bad though

not too bad, don't mind a little bit of deep purple. I'd heard Child in Time before (and Black Night obvs but it's a bonus track), and the rest is pretty cool as well. Hard Lovin Man is p thumping. 4/5.

another album i think would be better appreciated by someone who has more taste than i do....oh they actually are gonna tour in my city soon!! might make more attempts to digest, but please dont hold me to it fav is living wreck

Deep Purple are considered to be one of the classic rock bands. And of course, with songs like "Smoke on the Water" they established their name in rock music. This album however, is, apart from some moments, nothing exceptional. Certainly, it has a very heavy and hard sound for an album from the early 70s, but little stands out and makes it special. The vocals are good, guitars and bass, drumming and keyboards too. It's not that they lack talent, but I feel like they haven't really figured out how they can use it most effectively. I can't say anything bad about the production either. The drum sound (especially during the outro of "Living Wreck") is faboulus. But somehow, there is nothing on the album I can or could remember, nothing that really stands out, nothing that makes this album special. All in all more an avarage rock album, that is decent to listen to, but nothing more.

This is getting the same review as Machine Head: "This really is a crossroads from blues and rock into a heavier sound."

"Child in Time" is absolute bonkers.

Rock piolita

a lot of rock and roll legends in this album, when it was purely Rock and Roll.

Best parts of this album are the noisy, jam parts. I also really liked the drums at the end of flight of the rat. Outside of that, it just sounds a little generic. Not bad but not my favorite either. 3.5/5

Standard hard blues rock. Take a blues riff, play it faster and louder. It’s not bad but not anything I’d write home about. I wouldn’t choose to listen to this again over Led Zeppelin or The Doors or something

Child in time was great, I don't think I was I was in the mood for the rest of this today. Very screamy. OK album

I don't care what anyone says, this is a great album

Didn't realize how early they were in on the sound

Arena rock sounds, from Speed King through Hard Lovin' Man. Bloodsucker reminded me of Zeppelin's Heartbreaker, and the epic Child in Time was pure prog-rock. Enjoyable but nothing at the level of Smoke on the Water. They're still touring and producing though.

Definitely sounds of the time - 70s hard rock. Good musicianship but no songs really grabbed me.

Classic record from my childhood. I think this record still holds up. The sounds from this record feel like they're making a resurgence today. Favourite Track(s): Crawling, In The End, One Step Closer Least Favourite Track(s): Cure For The Itch

Yeh it was alright

Bit of a racket but just about held on to a 3

It's alright. Technically impressive, but didn't grab me in any effective way.

Not available.

Hard to listen to on a road trip with napping kids... But still fun

it's pretty good innit

Slightly dated, but still good! ★★★

Har aldrig hørt andet Deep Purple end Smoke on the Water.

The Mark II line up is the only lineup that really matters IMO. From the group that would ultimately deliver the two heavy hitters of “Machine Head” and “Perfect Strangers”, this one doesn’t quite measure up to that level. The elements are all there, but the Album would have been better served had they shaved off 1-2 min of each track and added 2-3 more songs. The songs play long.

I like to rock out with the best of ‘em, but sheesh…not sure where to start with this one. I guess I gotta start with the cover art. So much for subtle. But moving on to the music itself, these dudes clearly have really high music chops. And at the time it was probably considered pretty amazing and different, but the album is such a cliche box checker. From overused scream screeching banshee howl singing, to silly lyrics, to bloated guitar solos, to unnecessary drum solos…ha…it’s got it all. I kept finding myself saying surely they must be joking. Turns out they weren’t. I thought multiple times that I was actually listening to Spinal Tap. And I guess that is what pushes it into a higher rating for me.

Did not love this. Some cool moments but a little too much jam band, vocals were a little too over the top and the fact that Child in Time is not a great song and accounts for 25% of the album has marking this with lower grades. 2.75

Good memories to mediocre songs. Aaaah-Aaah-Ah

We liked this. We also remember very little and we forgot to rate it...oops. Cool guitar riffs (we think)

This is very. Hm. Oh I don’t know. Listening to this feels kind of like listening to some man going on and on about how great he is in some capacity, half-demanding and half-begging that I heap praise upon him. Whether or not he’s actually as good as he thinks or wants me to think he is (and I kind of think these guys might be, like, technically this record is THERE) it kind of makes me determined to convince myself he’s not, out of spite. Also the whole thing really does just invite Zeppelin comparisons that are… not necessarily always very favorable (Zeppelin is just so much more FUN…). But. Ugh, I don’t know. I want to give it two stars, and maybe I should, for the number of times I found myself rolling my eyes at all the flourishes and wails, but I don’t know if I can quite manage… sometimes the braggart men do manage to win you over in the end, however much you hate both parties involved for letting it happen

Well constructed, but highly unlilely to be anyone's favourite.

70’s rock

Classic guitar rock

You can hear the beginnings of where they were going. But they didn’t get there until Machine Head.

That is some 70's driving hard rock right there.

classic heavy metal, it's good but can be overwhelming!

Would not buy

And that's a wrap on Deep Purple. My least favorite of the three on the list, but overall it's an enjoyable rock/early heavy metal record.

Good old rock

Some fun shit on here, also a lot of ridiculousness. Pretty sure Child in Time is the inspiration for Dennis Reynolds Day Man performance. There's a lot of fun to be had here. I'll play this at parties even though everyone will look at me funny.

Too many unnecessary solos. 3/5

This went harder and faster than I expected from DP. Way better than smoke on the water. Might listen again.

progressive really.

Solid rock album

First one I was actually familiar with prior

it’s aight. ganz cool aber nichts besonderes imo.

Great album from possibly the best line-up

kult albumcover

I still don’t like the organ but this has some really solid hard rock.

Living up to the title of the album, these guys most definitely knew how to rock and rock hard. There are some serious chops in the band and it makes for an enjoyable ride. But, my Lord, "Child in Time" has to be the most Spinal Tap-ish song of all time. And Ian Gillin's histrionic wails can be laughable. But there's a sonic intensity to many of these songs that can't be denied, especially on the second half with "Flight of the Rat" and "Into the Fire."

Technically impressive. The original recording sounds like crap, but listened to the 2018 remaster and was very impressed with lead guitar shredding and percussion especially. It's all a bit too proggy and overblown for my taste though, especially the excessive organ and wailing falsetto. Not bad but not something I'd really ever want to throw on either

pretty cool. chill dad rock. sort of act 1 of a guitar hero game vibe, medium difficulty. i think i have a weakness for the overwrought 10 minute long epic because Child in Time ruled. strong 3

Was okay

A rocking good time

Awesome riffs, marred by classic rock vocals. Can hear both influences they pulled from and things they influenced.

Some old school rock. It's ok.

Never really listened to much of Deep Purple before. Maybe it's because this is a pre Machine Head album but this sounds too much like The Doors for me to consider it anything more than every other psychedelic rock band from this era. At least the riffs are good!

Heard Before? Only "Child in Time". Notes: - rock organ is one of my favorite instruments, so I was instantly sold on that. - this album's reputation as the heaviest thing going in 1970 rings true, especially on something like "Into the Fire". - once things get underway, there isn't much in the way of surprises, but there is just enough variety to hold my interest. - lyrics are perfectly ignorable. - the mix matches the performances perfectly, with all the instruments just distinct enough, but still blending as things get heavy. vocals are half-buried, which is ideal. Verdict: Organ-heavy hard rock wankery. If you have long gray hair and a leather vest, this is the perfect soundtrack to thinking about your glory days. Listen Again? Probably not, but I'm very glad that I heard it. I'm fine listening to something once out of curiosity - that's how I can make my way through this list.

Was surprised to see a second Deep Purple album on this list (I think 1 is enough to get the idea of these guys). Good album, stoner rock prior to the label, lots of solid heavy riffage and psychedelic noodling. Although, I don't know why folks think Richie Blackmore is great guitar player, he seems just kinda ordinary to me. Find the organ a bit too churchy for my taste.

Child in Time 5/5

If you like guitar solos, Deep Purple is for you. Fave track: Child in Time

Remeber when they used to do laser light shows, this is the music I assumed they would do for it. It’s wild

This was solid but I wasn’t in the mood

As a baby baby boomer, I have lived at the edge of time where this music was popular, so I don't get it, but those who were older in my life were formed by this music, so this explains somethings.

Rocks hard. I'm almost certainly never going to listen to this ever again.

good stuff! doesn't overstay its welcome

It was fine. I can't say I was really into it. But maybe that because my ears need a break from screaming. The music was rockin' some of the songs could have been half as long.

An interesting album, quite different from other metal albums I listen to... Didn't make me go crazy but I enjoy it Fav song - Child in Time 3/5

Rockin'

I was really getting into the first half of the album, but as it went on, it seemed to get a little stale and the songs just didn't hit the same as they did at the start of the album. I can see some resemblance to the early hard rock of Black Sabbath, but this felt a little more glam to me, so it just wasn't quite as good as I was hoping. But overall I still enjoyed it.

70's hard rock n roll. if you can't feel something from those guitar solos then i don't know what to tell you

Hell yeah. This shit rocks. A little over the top at points but overall just super fun and so heavy. Clearly so influential. The organ playing is awesome. The playing is sick on all fronts. Can I just go on a quick tangent. I know that Led Zeppelin has an iconic style, but they get too much credit for this kind of music. I'm sure we'll have to listen to Led Zeppelin I at some point so I'll keep it short but damn. In Rock came out the year after Led Zeppelin I, but it has an originality and freshness that is totally lacking from significant portions of LZI. I love "Good Times Bad Times," but nothing on In Rock is nearly as embarrassing (or exploitative) as the lifted blues numbers and random tabla song on that record. I'm gonna go on another tangent because Ian Paice's drumming on this album is awesome. I know that John Bonham is an important and influential drummer. His feel is legendary. I dream of having as much finesse as him on the kick pedal. But he gets WAY too much credit for this type of drumming. Ian Paice and Bill Ward of Black Sabbath are easily on the same level. And they were both playing more original music in 1970 than Bonham. 3.5

like yeah, need a beer and to let loose. but yeah

It's Rock Music

If Led Zeppelin set the stage for metal, and Black Sabbath birthed it, this feels like the zygote. I imagine that's why this shows up here… it represents an under-appreciated genre link, a forgotten ancestor, and also represents the pinnacle of the great Deep Purple tradition of stupid album covers. It's honestly not super memorable taken out of context, but I think it deserves a relisten despite being pretty firmly 3*

I like my dad so by proxy i like this. 3/5

precisely okay to my ear. it's an early defining record for heavy metal as you can hear a lot of early DNA within this, but i never really connected with it. it's just... fine. it feels very 60s/70s in construction and atmosphere so it's interesting from a historical perspective at least. i don't really know why i bounced off this because even after two listens it was an album that was rarely more than just There. the organ is admittedly pretty fun and is mostly what brings this up i think since otherwise this would all blend together compared to something that at least has its moments. for that reason alone, major props to jon lord who is balling out across the whole album.

3.5 if i could

Good metal but not great netal

Pretty solid heavy metal, opener rips but it's mostly a band finding their sound

This was fine. I liked some of the more progressive moments, like Child in Time, but found much of the rest to be, well, fine.

Thick, succulent, dense rock music. Heavier than I remembered. Great riffing, but the songs are way too long. This would have easily been a 4 star album if they had only shown a bit of restraint from the self-indulgent noodling.

So now I see where Rob Reiner got the idea for Spinal Tap. This album was way too cliché - it covers all the items on why I don't think much of the hard/metal bands. I didn't hate it but just kind of shook my head at the bombast. The Mark II lineup just doesn't do much for me. Now if Mark IV album was on this list instead of all Mark II albums, I would be happier. RIP Tommy Bolin

I don't care for deep purple that much, not my thing

Perfectly fine but not my thing. Far too many boring guitar solos.

i like this one more than Machine Head tbh. one of the earlier boomer rock bands i could fully appreciate. among the first albums that truly sound like the 70s, to my ears at least. Speed King and Child in Time are pretty awesome. deserves to be one of the 1001? ehhh

Not listened

First time actually listening to a Deep Purple album. The overall sound is good but why do most songs here sound so similar. Still, quite cool 3/5

Dug the music, didn't care for the vocals much.

It's fine.

Hard rockers

Very proggy in places this offering from DP. Still a very listenable album

I mean, it's the same bass line but it's fun

it was ok but nothing surprising. just pretty good dad rock

Good but not my favourite.

5/10 Best songs: Child in Time Just another 70s heavy rock band. I have no strong feelings about this album. It's repetitive, not much stands out, but it's not actively bad. It is very clear that this was a big influence on later metal bands, which is cool.

it;s alright for the most part. Pretty nice but not outstanding for my taste.

Yeah that's classic British 70s rock. I thought machine head was better than this, but this was decent too. Nothing too surprising and gets a little samey, but it's good 3.5

The best song on the 'album' - Black Night - unfortunately wasn't actually on it.

Yesterday, I listened to this album for the first time, but I was feeling too dark and stormy to *really* listen, so the only sounds I registered were those of the shrieking falsetto vocals, which I hated. I would've been content to rate this album poorly and move on to the next, but I thought I'd give it a fair shake and listen intently today. I'm glad I did, because it turns out there's a lot to like in Deep Purple in Rock. The riffs are simple, yet catchy, and can easily become earworms. The lyrics, too, are simple, but have a bit of charm. I thought the first verse of "Living Wreck," about coming along for a weekend but only staying for one night, was especially clever. My favorite tracks were "Living Wreck" and "Flight of the Rat," though "Speed King" was also fun to listen to. (3.5/5)

This was an okay album. I just was not completely into it being under the weather

No smoke on the water today Yeah they're alright, classic rock and all that

I guess it was fine. If I were an avid listener of 70’s rock, I’d probably would have liked it more. But I’m not so it is what it is.^_^

If i get another American rock album tomorrow I'm done with this

Rowdy album from the very start. Fun experience but for sure only a one time listen. Child in time was the best song.

Not likely to listen to this one again but was enjoyable overall for a car journey. Song I’m adding to the playlist is ‘child in time’

Not my usual thing, but I can’t deny I was giving it some big nods while walking through the woods. Favourite track: Flight of the Rat

Rock music is great and some of the songs were enjoyable but boy were they long

My dad-core

Wow, that's a lot of WAHHHHHHHHHH screaming. It's perfect if that's your jam. I was gifted my mom's old record collection years ago, and this was in the pile. I don't remember ever hearing it, but as a child I drew crayon mustaches and eyeglasses on the faces and my mom got mad. So, I guess that was my first experience with Deep Purple. There's no doubt it rocks and it was very influential for the musicians I would end up loving in the 90's. Also, it is unrelenting, like seriously, it just starts off like a cannon and keeps going to the end. Solos and fast drums and WAHHHHHH! It's not my cup of tea, but I appreciate the talent.

I can appreciate Deep Purple for what they did for the genre and for the talent that they have as a band. But, while this record has its definite merits, I can't say that I love it either. For one thing, I'm not a big fan of the hammond organ in general, and there is a ton of that throughout the whole record. It feels like they can't really decide if they want to be metal or if they want to be the Doors. Granted, this record seems like it came out as the genre was being defined, and also, to be fair, who gives a shit about a genre anyway? Write what you want to write how you want to write it. But, the organ kind of kills the fun on this one for me. Another thing that kind of kills any momentum for me on this one is just the length of songs seemingly revolved around a lot of faffing about for the sake of faffing. Sometimes, brevity is a good thing. I guess I'm saying that I love the talent on display, particularly from Ritchie Blackmore, but not at the expense of keeping things concise. I sometimes feel like Deep Purple asks a lot of the listener. So, all in all, this isn't a terrible record or anything, I think I just want to like it more than I actually do. 6.5/10

Decent

The album was interesting and had some nice grooves. But I kept wanting to hear hits that were not on this album.

Second Deep Purple album in first 50 days. Never listened to this one front to back. Seems like classic early Heavy metal. There’s a great sound here if you’re in the mood for this. It rocks and is fun. Doesn’t have the memorable hits as Machine Head, but overall it’s a fun listen. Very guitar solo heavy with long stretches of that. It’s teetering on a 4, but right now I think it’s a 3. It’s fun, but may not be the most memorable album. But anything here would be great on a hard rock/classic playlist. My favorite song is probably Child in Time.

First Listen; 3.5; This sounds to me like the most stereotypical 70s heavy metal, with the falsetto vocals, organs, screams, silly lyrics in parts, and so on. And that's not a bad thing, for me anyway. I like the pace and speed of the songs, especially compared to Led Zeppelin. An album I would certainly enjoy listening to again. Favorite Track: Speed King

Not sure I get the hype

This was great fun. Sounded a lot like the studio kept getting overrun by chimps, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

This album grew on me. It is a bit over the top with a lot going on. Not sure I would buy any of the songs, but given my mood, I would listen on the radio.

Some great moments in here, but it all kinda sounds the same, unfortunately. The guitar is dope though. I only really know smoke on the water so I wanna dig into their discography a little bit more.

I can't imagine how heavy this must have sounded in 1970! I think I could grow to really like this on repeat listenings.

solid as a rock

This is neutral, true middle of the road, dudes being guys playing guitar music. Nothing special or profound.

Never appreciated the obvious line connecting this and early Iron Maiden/Motorhead. No bad.

A bit wailing

fun cover art silly song names but not my style

honestly more solid than I thought out of this bum ahh band

Pretty fun some songs way too long.

High-energy, aggressive rock. It is clear what sound they are going for, and on most accounts they manage to pull it off thanks to some great guitar lines and energetic rhythm sections. "Speed King" is an excellent starter, and the pivot from heavy to reflective through the interplay between guitar and organ is a great touch. Although "Child in Time" is a touch on the long side at more than ten minutes, the album is generally of a good length. Enjoyable, but not particularly standout.

bisschen viele Soli ;)

2.75 - I thought I would recognize more from this.

I'm not one to mention "production" on albums when I'm doing reviews like this, but the first few songs are mixed pretty poorly. It does fix itself around the third or fourth song at least. The guitar tone sounds super weird at the start of the album, though. Anyways, the solos are great. It's a Deep Purple album, so that's pretty inherent, but they're still really good soloists. the verses lose me a little, as does the latter half of the album as a whole. Basically, I don't really know how to feel about this one.

I mean . . . it's kind of loud and heavy, which is historically important, but it just doesn't sound good and there are too many squeaky organ solos.

I expected more with this. Maybe the cheesy album cover ruined it for me.

Guitar fuzz, Aerosmith, GnR, Metallica, van halen

Good straight ahead hard rock that does not let up

Daarvoor 3 sterren

This era of rock vocalists are not for me. Music itself pretty timeless if a bit prolonged.

Pretty darn rockin' not sure if i would go back to it anytime soon. Maybe if i'm drinking beers in the summer with the squad and we want something heavy to bang our heads to

I understand the influence they are to so many heavier bands. But when I listen to it, it has quite a lot of flaws. Very long songs, solos a pretty boring (I am not a solo guy) and that annoying organ. On the other hand, solid riffs and nice leads. Fav: Into the fire

Hard rock/proto metal. Child in Time is a Stairway-style epic track Hard Lovin Man has a good energy and a fun chromatic organ(?) solo Best track - Child in Time 3 stars - historically and technically interesting but it doesn't excite me at all.

I was a huge fan of Zeppelin, Sabbath in High School, and if I would have found this album I'd likely have been a big fan of it as well. My taste has migrated a bit since, but it's still a solid rock album.

I mean, I rocked out. It was alright.

I like child in time but other than that I think its a mediocre album theres not enough song direction and too many falsetto ahhhhs

Child in Time ❤️

Album 121. In Rock — Deep Purple (1970) Deep Purple is forever associated for me with this meme. I literally listened to the album and remembered that video all the time. Good album, influential for metal. 3/5 Liked songs: — Child in Time — Flight of the Rat — Hard Lovin' Man

Buen rock clásico

Never gave this band a chance until the drummer I played with in university sat me down and was like uuu need to listen to these guys. I haven’t listened to them in a long time but I can appreciate their musician ship and confidence and this album is solid.

Amazing guitars on this album! Good rock and roll music!

It was fine. I’ve heard better from Deep Purple. 3/5

Muito bom, gostei da 2 e da 7, além de Child in Time, que já conhecia

Impressive, but not inspiring.

classic rock - but nothing too eye opening

It’s a good album title/cover combo. The content wasn’t bad but you have to be in the mood for it which I rarely am. I did like how crazy Child in Time got. Otherwise all serviceable. High 3.

Pretty standard hard rock from the early 70s. Good but not great. Probably deserves another listen.

This was in such desperate need of a remaster that it was hard to focus on the music itself. These guys rock for sure but neither of their two bangers are on here. Funny album cover especially for a debut album.

nije lose zapravo

Overall generally fun, head-banging rock. There are some songs that are too repetitive, especially with the wailing and weird yelling in the middle, but most of them are great.

Not my cup of tea, but give them credit for how they influenced the metal scene to come, spoofed warts and all. Impressive to think this was recorded in 1970.

mid icl 6/10

Guitar solo overload. If there is such a thing

This album feels exactly like what it essentially is, early metal music that paved the way for many others to follow. Some of the longer form things worked really well here, and gave the band a little more room to shine, but that's not to say the guitar riffs and driving drums weren't solid throughout. That being said, I'm not sure there's a single on this album that I would really come back to, although Child in Time is close its 10+ minute length is too much for me. 3.5

2nd Deep Purple in like a week. Hmm. The live record was better, but his is solid hard rock w/ a dash of prog in there. Some of the songs are freakin long.

Good classic rock. But I have a lot of favs that sound like this.

Though certainly not bad at all, with a couple of very solid songs, at times it feels almost masturbatory in its presentation of guitar solos.

A very cohesive 70's rock album. Not my favourite and many of the tracks felt bloated. 3/5 stars.

Deep, deep, 70's rock. Not my thing but perfectly serviceable. An obviously strong and heavy guitar sound, and if you like this then im sure its great, but i dont see enough variation to keep me engaged

Courtney: good classic rock Craig: okay

Damn did they know how to rock

CRAZYcakez

A bit too #rock for me but some tracks were fun!

Good rock album of the time. What’s not to like

Speed King - great fun. Bloodsucker - LOVE how they've used sound panning at 3:23; like I thought the song was alright 'till then but that bit is electrifying. Child in Time - Love the tempo change from the preceding songs. Incredible vocals on those high notes. Flight of the Rat - quite a punk sound to this one. Not my thing though unforch. Great riff halfway through though, and incredible tempo-increasing drums at the end. Into the Fire - nothing too standout. Living Wreck - ditto. Hard Lovin' Man - great sound panning at the end, but otherwise too wall-of-sound for me (but obviously technically brilliant).

Listen again don’t remember it

70s rock

Not really my sort of music at all. Kinda interesting from a historical perspective re hard rock etc, but I think the songs and vibe sounds the same throughout. Okay I take it back, there is some FANTASTIC guitar work here esp in Child of Time!!!

Just wasn’t feeling this one. The noise was solid but the melodies and rhythm just weren’t enough to keep me interested.

Speed King 3/5 Bloodsucker 3/5 Child in Time 2/5 Flight of the Rat 4/5 Into the Fire 4/5 Living Wreck 3/5 Hard Lovin' Man 2/5 Overall Album 3.0

I don't know what it is with me and Deep Purple, but I'd rather listen to Thin Lizzy or Black Sabbath over them every time. It's not a bad album, just kind of mediocre in my opinion. 6/10

Unlike Zeppelin and Sabbath, I never really got into Deep Purple. So I came to "In Rock" hoping it might be the record that finally made things click. It didn't. Obviously Ritchie Blackmore is a phenomenal guitarist, and Ian Paice is a great drummer, but the band lacks the same caliber of songwriting skills that Zeppelin or Sabbath had. Yes, I'm aware that I'm talking about a band who would go on to create one of the all-time great guitar riffs, a riff that would get you kicked out of any guitar shop in an instant. The riffs on this album are decent, but the songs themselves often feel restless and unfocused, with melodies that wander a bit all over the place. Ian Gillan's vocals are probably the biggest barrier for me. That high-pitched, warbling shriek feels like the prototype for Iron Maiden, and that's not a good thing. It's not always as annoying throughout the album thankfully, but it does get on my nerves more often than not. "Child in Time" is clearly the centrepiece: a long, dramatic precursor to prog rock. While it's packed with many of the things I generally dislike about songs like this, it's still not the worst if I'm honest. A bit corny, sure (I found myself rolling up my car windows in embarrassment while listening to this on a commute), but I actually liked it overall. At over ten minutes it could easily lose half its runtime though. The highlights? "Flight of the Rat" is good craic, and "Into the Fire" is the clear highlight. The central riff and the stutter-y use of organ in the verses remind me of King Crimson, and it's easily my favourite track on the album. Overall, "In Rock" isn't what I expected. Are they Zeppelin or Sabbath? Definitely not. Do they deserve their place among the greats of rock history? I'll have reserve judgment until later albums "Fireball" or "Machine Head" might come up on this list. Based on this album alone? I'm not sold.
